  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the Gospel according to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. ! While you're getting there, Alex, I never heard the battle shield verse of Be That My Vision.

  3. ! That was great. Thank you, brother, for sharing that one with us.

  4. That may need to be a permanent fixture in that song.

  5. Clay said the next step is that we sing it in Gaelic.

  6. This morning we're going to continue our careful consideration of the Sermon on the Mount.

  7. Recall that this sermon is a declaration of the Kingdom of Heaven.

  8. And we rightly understand that the Kingdom has come because the King has come.

  9. Matthew records for us in Matthew chapter 4 and verse 17.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  10. From that time, Jesus began to preach the beginning of His ministry, saying,

  11. Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

  12. Recall also that Jesus begins His sermon with declarations of blessedness for a people with particular characteristics.

  13. He's showing us what those who are citizens of this coming Kingdom look like.

  14. He has declared blessed those who recognize their spiritual poverty.

  15. Those who come before God with nothing in their hands but an appeal to the righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  16. And He says they're blessed because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

  17. He has declared blessed those who mourn over their sinful state and over the sinful state of the world around them.

  18. The sin-sick nature of the place in which they live.

  19. And He declares them blessed for they shall be comforted.

  20. He has declared blessed those who understand what they truly deserve.

  21. Do not seek retribution when wronged, but trust in God's sovereign goodness and His final making of all things right.

  22. And they're declared blessed for they shall inherit the earth.

  23. So join me now in considering the fourth of Jesus' declarations of blessedness in Matthew chapter 5, verse 6.

    Matthew 5:6

  24. Before I read it, beloved, I remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  25. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  26. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  27. Matthew chapter 5, verse 6.

    Matthew 5:6

  28. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

  29. Now, as I've done over the past few weeks, I want to work through the single verse with a series of questions.

  30. And I am going to take you elsewhere in the Scripture today.

  31. So I'm going to encourage you to pull your ribbon marker out and stick it in Matthew chapter 5 as I take us to other places.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  32. The first question I want to ask is simply, and most importantly, what is meant by those who hunger and thirst for righteousness?

  33. Let's first think a little bit about this phrase, hunger and thirst.

  34. Now, last week's text, Matthew 5, verse 5, was a direct citation of Psalm 37, verse 11.

    Matthew 5:5 Psalms 37:11

  35. I helped explain that to you and showed you a bit of the context of Psalm 37.

  36. In Matthew 5, verse 6, Jesus is not directly citing any Old Testament text,

    Matthew 5:6

  37. but he is drawing on metaphors that his listeners would have been familiar with.

  38. It is understood that Jesus' primary audience, the Sermon on the Mount, would have been Jewish listeners,

  39. and that Matthew's account, his gospel account, is particularly aimed at Jewish listeners.

  40. That means we have to do a little extra work.

  41. I'm assuming most of us, maybe none of us, are of Jewish descent,

  42. certainly not familiar with the Old Testament text the way they would have been.

  43. But these metaphors that he draws on, they would have been extremely familiar with.

  44. I'm going to show you just two examples that are statements of hungering and thirsting

  45. that end up with negative results,

  46. but he's drawing on these types of metaphors to help us understand what it means to hunger and thirst

  47. for anything, in this case, righteousness.

  48. The first is from Isaiah chapter 55, verse 2, and the first half of verse 3,

    Isaiah 55:2

  49. which reads,

  50. So God, speaking metaphorically through the prophet Isaiah, says,

  51. Stop trying to satisfy yourself with anything other than me.

  52. He's saying, I am the rich food that your soul needs.

  53. I am your sustenance.

  54. Another text, an example of this metaphor Jesus is drawing on,

  55. Jeremiah chapter 2, verses 12 and 13.

    Jeremiah 2:12

  56. This is from our Bible reading a couple of weeks ago,

  57. if you're keeping up with us on this,

  58. where we read,

  59. Be appalled, O heavens, at this.

  60. Be shocked.

  61. Be utterly desolate or dismayed,

  62. declares the Lord,

  63. for my people have committed two evils.

  64. They have forsaken me,

  65. the fountain of living waters,

  66. and hewed out cisterns for themselves,

  67. broken cisterns that can hold no water.

  68. This time, God, speaking through the prophet Jeremiah,

  69. speaks metaphorically of himself as an unending source of life.

  70. Water bringing forth life.

  71. And an ending source of it.

  72. A fountain of living water.

  73. And he accuses his people of seeking life in a way that will never satisfy their thirst.

  74. They're digging for themselves wells that won't hold life-giving water at all.

  75. So food and water are the most basic of human needs.

  76. And I think we take that for granted.

  77. There is food and water everywhere in the place that we live.

  78. You can walk out in the hallway and drink as much filtered water as you want to

  79. from a water fountain right now.

  80. Right?

  81. We don't quite appreciate in Jesus' day how much work it was to obtain sustenance

  82. and to have clean, safe water for drinking.

  83. But surely this is at the very core of life.

  84. A person does not last long without one,

  85. and certainly not long at all without both.

  86. So Jesus is speaking of our most basic human need

  87. as he picks up this metaphorical language.

  88. It's very possible that none of us have really ever,

  89. in the temporal sense, hungered and thirsted.

  90. The way these people would have understood what it means to be hungry and to be thirsty.

  91. So we have to apply our mindsets.

  92. We have to try to imagine the type of longing that Jesus here is speaking of.

  93. And what is it that he says we should hunger and thirst for?

  94. Righteousness.

  95. Why did Jesus say that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are going to be satisfied,

  96. are blessed,

  97. and not instead those who hunger and thirst for God?

  98. In Isaiah 55.3, which I just read to you,

  99. what does he say is the place of sustenance?

  100. What is the bread, the rich food that God's people should buy?

  101. He says it's himself.

  102. He says, come to me.

  103. In Jeremiah 2.13, which I just read,

  104. there's two evils.

  105. First, that they've forsaken me.

  106. They've turned away from me,

  107. this source of water, living water,

  108. and they've turned elsewhere,

  109. failing sources of water.

  110. An additional Old Testament reference,

  111. Psalm 42, verses 1 and 2,

    Psalms 42:1

  112. likely familiar with,

  113. as a deer pants for flowing streams,

  114. so pants or thirsts my soul for you, O God.

  115. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

  116. When shall I come and appear before God?

  117. So why?

  118. Why does Jesus say,

  119. those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  120. and not those who hunger and thirst for God?

  121. I have to imagine,

  122. and I think that good exegesis

  123. has to be intermingled with a bit of imagination,

  124. that his listeners cocked their heads a little sideways

  125. when he said that,

  126. instead of hungering and thirsting for God,

  127. because they would have been familiar with these texts.

  128. Isaiah 55, Jeremiah 2, Psalm 42.

  129. Why does he say,

  130. hunger and thirst for righteousness?

  131. At the outset of our study,

  132. just a few weeks ago,

  133. I posited to you

  134. that in the Sermon on the Mount,

  135. two major things emerge.

  136. The second of those that I posited to you,

  137. which we have been dealing with now at length,

  138. and will continue to deal with,

  139. is this idea of human flourishing,

  140. blessedness.

  141. What does it mean for us to be doing well in the world?

  142. Citizens of God's kingdom,

  143. Jesus is saying to us,

  144. will flourish.

  145. They will have joy,

  146. and comfort,

  147. and peace,

  148. and satisfaction.

  149. We have seen,

  150. and we're going to continue to see,

  151. that the type of flourishing

  152. that happens in God's kingdom

  153. often runs,

  154. rubs right up against,

  155. pushes against,

  156. stands in contradiction

  157. to the world's concept of the same.

  158. So that's one theme we've been looking at,

  159. and we'll continue to.

  160. The first that I presented to you

  161. was the idea of whole person

  162. righteousness.

  163. Whole person righteousness.

  164. Jesus corrects in this sermon

  165. the misunderstanding that God is only concerned

  166. with action.

  167. Citizens of God's kingdom

  168. will not only honor God with their actions,

  169. but also with their thoughts,

  170. and their intentions,

  171. and their motivations,

  172. and their motivations,

  173. and on,

  174. and on,

  175. with every bit of their being.

  176. We sang Deuteronomy 6-5 this morning

  177. with the kids.

  178. Not by design,

  179. but how wonderful,

  180. a song for us to sing.

  181. This very command

  182. that we should love the Lord our God

  183. with all of us.

  184. Every bit of us.

  185. Leveraged off into His direction.

  186. This beatitude

  187. picks this up.

  188. This theme speaks to this whole person

  189. righteousness theme.

  190. Let me show you

  191. elsewhere in the sermon.

  192. So in Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:20

  193. verse 20,

  194. Jesus says,

  195. For I tell you,

  196. unless your righteousness

  197. exceeds that of the scribes

  198. and Pharisees,

  199. you will never enter

  200. the kingdom of heaven.

  201. So He's addressing

  202. this issue of the day.

  203. A great issue in Jesus' day

  204. and a great issue

  205. in our day as well

  206. of rampant hypocrisy.

  207. Many declared

  208. and declared

  209. to love God with their lips,

  210. put on a pretty good show

  211. to convince others

  212. of the same,

  213. the outward trappings

  214. of religion,

  215. of devotion to God.

  216. But they denied

  217. and deny

  218. a love for Him

  219. which totally

  220. permeated

  221. their lives.

  222. Thoughts,

  223. intentions.

  224. John the Baptist

  225. says,

  226. You brood of vipers

  227. to the Pharisees.

  228. Who everyone else

  229. would have looked at them

  230. and said,

  231. They've got it together.

  232. These men know

  233. how to rightly

  234. worship God.

  235. And they were indicted

  236. for being

  237. whitewashed tombs.

  238. Jesus declares

  239. the woe to them.

  240. Whitewashed tombs.

  241. You look nice

  242. on the outside

  243. but inside

  244. you're full

  245. of dead people's bones.

  246. Jesus is trying

  247. to correct this.

  248. He's saying

  249. it's not just outside.

  250. That you can put on

  251. the trappings

  252. of religion

  253. that all of you

  254. is devoted

  255. to me.

  256. Further on,

  257. in the conclusion

  258. of this sermon

  259. in Matthew chapter 7.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  260. And these should be

  261. scary words to us,

  262. beloved.

  263. Verse 21-23.

  264. Jesus says,

  265. In a warning to us

  266. to not deceive ourselves,

  267. He says,

  268. Not everyone

  269. who says to me,

  270. Lord, Lord,

  271. will enter

  272. the kingdom of heaven,

  273. but the one

  274. who does the will

  275. of my Father

  276. who is in heaven.

  277. On that day,

  278. the end day,

  279. many will say to me,

  280. Lord, Lord,

  281. do we not prophesy

  282. in your name

  283. and cast out demons

  284. in your name

  285. and do many mighty works

  286. in your name?

  287. And then I will declare

  288. to them,

  289. I never knew you.

  290. Depart from me,

  291. you workers

  292. of lawlessness.

  293. So we see here

  294. that there are people

  295. who are doing things

  296. in the name of Christ

  297. and it would seem

  298. miraculous things

  299. in the name of Christ.

  300. I don't know any of you

  301. who have done miraculous things

  302. in anybody's name,

  303. but here are people

  304. who at least appear

  305. to have done

  306. some rather miraculous things,

  307. but they're not keepers

  308. of God's law.

  309. They don't have

  310. this whole person righteousness

  311. that we're talking about here.

  312. Jesus says to them,

  313. I never knew you.

  314. Depart from me.

  315. the Beatitudes,

  316. beginning in Matthew 5,

  317. and everything that follows

  318. in this sermon

  319. is Jesus' very careful work

  320. of teaching His listeners

  321. then and this morning

  322. that a life that is pleasing to God

  323. encompasses our whole being.

  324. He's getting in

  325. and He's mixing it up.

  326. He's making very careful,

  327. precise cuts

  328. to help us to see

  329. that there's nothing

  330. we can do

  331. to be accepted

  332. by God.

  333. Poor in spirit.

  334. By His grace to us

  335. in the personal work

  336. of Jesus Christ,

  337. we can stand right.

  338. We can be righteous

  339. before Him.

  340. And all of our lives

  341. can and should

  342. be given to Him.

  343. those who belong

  344. to the kingdom of heaven

  345. who have

  346. been saved by God

  347. through the personal work

  348. of Jesus Christ

  349. will,

  350. at our core,

  351. long,

  352. desire,

  353. deeply desire,

  354. hunger and thirst

  355. for righteousness.

  356. We will desire

  357. above every other desire

  358. to serve the King

  359. of the kingdom

  360. that we are citizens of.

  361. On your bulletin this morning,

  362. a C.S. Lewis quote for you.

  363. I hope this one's familiar to you,

  364. but I think it's apt

  365. in this particular spot.

  366. He wrote,

  367. If I find in myself

  368. a desire,

  369. so read there,

  370. hunger and thirst

  371. for righteousness,

  372. a desire which no experience

  373. in this world

  374. can satisfy,

  375. the most probable explanation

  376. is that I was made

  377. for another world.

  378. I'm a citizen

  379. of a different kingdom

  380. because nothing

  381. in this world

  382. can satisfy

  383. this deep longing

  384. in me

  385. for righteousness.

  386. I want to make this point

  387. just a bit further.

  388. I'm answering the question

  389. still,

  390. in case you lost me.

  391. Why did Jesus not say

  392. hunger and thirst

  393. for God?

  394. Why this righteousness

  395. theme here

  396. in verse 6

  397. of Matthew 5?

  398. So let me show you

  399. just a little bit

  400. further

  401. by showing you

  402. a little bit

  403. about the structure

  404. of Jesus'

  405. blessed declarations,

  406. these beatitudes

  407. that we see.

  408. So look,

  409. if you will,

  410. Matthew 5.

  411. There are

  412. eight declarations

  413. of blessing.

  414. We've got

  415. one per verse

  416. through verse 10.

  417. Excuse me,

  418. verse 10.

  419. And then we understand

  420. verse 11,

  421. although he does say

  422. at the beginning of it,

  423. blessed once again,

  424. but to see it

  425. as a further

  426. explanation of

  427. verse 10,

  428. the declaration

  429. of blessing

  430. found in verse 10.

  431. So there are

  432. eight total.

  433. And they are

  434. grouped

  435. into

  436. two sets

  437. of four.

  438. Before we talk

  439. about those

  440. two sets of four,

  441. though,

  442. I want to show you

  443. that the very first

  444. beatitude

  445. begins with

  446. the kingdom

  447. of heaven,

  448. for theirs

  449. is the kingdom

  450. of heaven.

  451. And the last one,

  452. just before the

  453. further explanation

  454. of it,

  455. in verse 10,

  456. Jesus says the same,

  457. for theirs

  458. is the kingdom

  459. of heaven.

  460. So we have

  461. this book ending

  462. of the Beatitudes

  463. with this idea

  464. of citizenship

  465. in the kingdom.

  466. John Piper

  467. referred to this

  468. as a kingdom

  469. of heaven sandwich,

  470. which really

  471. made me laugh

  472. at the time,

  473. and now that I'm

  474. reading it,

  475. it's not that funny,

  476. but he talked

  477. about the meat

  478. in between,

  479. I guess.

  480. But anyway,

  481. I chuckled

  482. and I wrote it down.

  483. So now,

  484. when we look

  485. at these two

  486. groupings

  487. of four,

  488. the first four

  489. are passive,

  490. if you'll allow

  491. the word.

  492. They're happening

  493. within.

  494. They're attitudes

  495. of heart.

  496. They're understanding

  497. of condition.

  498. They're not

  499. retaliatory

  500. in the case

  501. of meekness.

  502. It's happening

  503. within.

  504. It's who we are.

  505. And then the second

  506. four are active.

  507. They're evidencing

  508. of who we are.

  509. So verse six,

  510. where we are today,

  511. blessed are those

  512. who hunger and thirst

  513. for righteousness,

  514. ends these first four,

  515. this grouping

  516. of these first four.

  517. We're hungering for it.

  518. We're lacking it.

  519. We want it.

  520. We want it to be ours.

  521. We want to be filled

  522. with righteousness.

  523. righteousness.

  524. And then at the end

  525. of the second grouping

  526. of four,

  527. we see the result

  528. of having been

  529. filled.

  530. Blessed are those

  531. who are persecuted.

  532. For what?

  533. For righteousness'

  534. sake.

  535. So they are now

  536. expressing righteousness

  537. and people are seeing

  538. righteousness

  539. in God's citizens

  540. of his kingdom.

  541. And because of that,

  542. they are persecuted.

  543. So the first four

  544. beatitudes describe

  545. the broken,

  546. grieving,

  547. quiet person

  548. who hungers

  549. and thirsts,

  550. wants to be filled

  551. with righteousness.

  552. And the next four

  553. beatitudes describe

  554. the merciful,

  555. pure peacemaker

  556. who is persecuted

  557. because of this

  558. righteousness.

  559. So,

  560. whole person

  561. righteousness,

  562. both inward

  563. and outward,

  564. right?

  565. He's expressing

  566. what the citizens

  567. look like

  568. under the lordship

  569. of their king,

  570. Jesus Christ.

  571. I'm going to show you

  572. a bit more

  573. about righteousness

  574. and what this is

  575. going to look like

  576. and express

  577. in our lives.

  578. And to do that,

  579. I want you to turn

  580. to Psalm 1.

  581. This is our public

  582. scripture reading

  583. from last

  584. Lord's Day.

  585. very interestingly,

  586. the Septuagint,

  587. which is the

  588. Greek translation

  589. of the Old Testament,

  590. I'm going to talk

  591. a little bit more

  592. about what the

  593. Septuagint is

  594. in just a second.

  595. The Septuagint

  596. translates

  597. the Hebrew word

  598. into Greek.

  599. I'm not going to

  600. tell you the Greek word.

  601. It's not important.

  602. I probably won't

  603. pronounce it all

  604. that well anyway,

  605. but it's the same

  606. in the Greek translation

  607. of the Old Testament

  608. as it is here

  609. in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  610. the same Greek word.

  611. Now,

  612. as a bit of an aside,

  613. because I know

  614. that I throw

  615. the word Septuagint

  616. out.

  617. If you're reading

  618. well,

  619. you're going to see

  620. this particular

  621. piece of literature

  622. referenced.

  623. Septuagint

  624. is our

  625. Anglicanized word

  626. of Latin,

  627. of course.

  628. You should study

  629. Latin.

  630. of the longer

  631. title,

  632. Versio Septuaginta

  633. Interpretum.

  634. I think I said

  635. that right,

  636. which means

  637. translation of the

  638. 70 interpreters.

  639. So,

  640. the translation

  641. of the 70

  642. and its abbreviation

  643. the LXX.

  644. So,

  645. you're reading a book

  646. and you see LXX,

  647. that's the Roman numeral

  648. for 70,

  649. right?

  650. is derived,

  651. this title is derived

  652. from a legend

  653. that 72

  654. Jewish scholars,

  655. that's six

  656. from each of the

  657. 12 tribes of Israel,

  658. worked independently

  659. to translate

  660. the whole of the

  661. Old Testament

  662. into Greek

  663. and ultimately

  664. produced identical

  665. versions.

  666. I don't buy into

  667. this legend at all.

  668. I don't believe

  669. that the Septuagint

  670. is inspired.

  671. However,

  672. it's useful,

  673. right?

  674. So,

  675. more likely,

  676. we don't know

  677. exactly the dates,

  678. but the work

  679. of translating

  680. into Greek

  681. began in the

  682. 3rd century B.C.

  683. and was completed

  684. in 132 B.C.

  685. So,

  686. it was a work

  687. done across

  688. a bunch of time,

  689. more likely.

  690. But the way

  691. it's helpful to us,

  692. right,

  693. not being

  694. speakers of

  695. Hebrew

  696. or of

  697. Koine Greek

  698. and we're trying

  699. to take

  700. our English minds

  701. and get them

  702. connected to

  703. this very,

  704. very ancient text

  705. is that men

  706. who are much

  707. closer to

  708. the original

  709. Hebrew text

  710. of the Old Testament

  711. who were also

  712. Greek speakers,

  713. helped us.

  714. What did they

  715. understand the word

  716. to mean?

  717. Like,

  718. how did they

  719. read Psalm 1,

  720. blessed is

  721. the man?

  722. And they brought

  723. it over

  724. into this

  725. Greek word

  726. that is inspired

  727. in Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  728. Are you connecting

  729. with me?

  730. I hope that you are.

  731. I haven't lost you

  732. completely.

  733. It's helpful for us

  734. in drawing connection

  735. between the Old Testament

  736. and the New Testament

  737. simply as the minds

  738. of the readers

  739. help us

  740. understand the

  741. original language.

  742. Ask me more questions

  743. later if I've lost you

  744. entirely.

  745. It's helpful.

  746. So if you hear people

  747. refer to the

  748. Septuagint

  749. or to the LXX,

  750. this is what they're

  751. talking about

  752. as we look at these words.

  753. So,

  754. Psalm 1,

  755. the very first word

  756. in the Greek version

  757. of the Old Testament

  758. is the same

  759. as the word

  760. in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5:6

  761. verse 6.

  762. Blessed

  763. is the man

  764. who walks

  765. not in the counsel

  766. of the wicked,

  767. nor stands

  768. in the way of sinners,

  769. nor sits

  770. in the seat

  771. of scoffers.

  772. But his delight

  773. is in the law

  774. of the Lord

  775. and on his law

  776. he meditates

  777. day and night.

  778. He is like

  779. a tree

  780. planted by streams

  781. of water

  782. that yields

  783. its fruit

  784. in its season

  785. and its leaf

  786. does not wither.

  787. In all that he does

  788. he prospers.

  789. The wicked

  790. are not so,

  791. but are like chaff

  792. that the wind

  793. drives away.

  794. Therefore the wicked

  795. will not stand

  796. in the judgment

  797. nor sinners

  798. in the congregation

  799. of the righteous.

  800. For the Lord

  801. knows the way

  802. of the righteous,

  803. but the way

  804. of the wicked

  805. will perish.

  806. So you can see

  807. here this man,

  808. this flourishing man

  809. and we can see

  810. the way

  811. in which he

  812. flourishes.

  813. Again,

  814. a metaphor.

  815. Verse 3,

  816. he's like a tree.

  817. A tree that's

  818. planted by water,

  819. has all

  820. of the sustenance

  821. it needs,

  822. does the work

  823. that it's supposed

  824. to do,

  825. that is yielding

  826. its fruit

  827. at the proper

  828. time.

  829. its leaf

  830. never dries up,

  831. it's always

  832. productive.

  833. And we see

  834. the contradiction

  835. to that,

  836. the wicked

  837. who are like

  838. a byproduct

  839. of the harvest

  840. that's no good

  841. for anything

  842. and the wind

  843. simply blows

  844. it away.

  845. And so there's

  846. a way

  847. of the wicked

  848. and there's

  849. a way

  850. of the righteous.

  851. righteous

  852. and the man

  853. who walks

  854. in the way

  855. of the righteous

  856. is declared

  857. blessed.

  858. This kind

  859. of living

  860. is a great

  861. work of God

  862. on our behalf.

  863. Beloved,

  864. this is not a thing

  865. we do ourselves.

  866. Just like poverty

  867. of spirit

  868. is not a thing

  869. that we produce

  870. ourselves

  871. or deep sadness

  872. over our sin

  873. and the sin

  874. of the world

  875. is not a thing

  876. we produce

  877. in ourselves

  878. and meekness

  879. is not a thing

  880. that's accomplished

  881. by ourselves.

  882. In the same way,

  883. this type

  884. of hungering

  885. and thirsting

  886. to walk

  887. in the ways

  888. of God

  889. is a great

  890. work of God.

  891. John 15

    John 15:5

  892. verse 5

  893. about in the middle

  894. of what we call

  895. the upper room

  896. discourse

  897. Jesus said

  898. I am the vine

  899. you are the branches

  900. whoever abides

  901. in me

  902. and I

  903. in him

  904. he it is

  905. that bears

  906. much fruit

  907. for apart

  908. from me

  909. you can

  910. do

  911. nothing.

  912. And just

  913. before this

  914. in the very

  915. same discourse

  916. in chapter 14

  917. verses 15

  918. through 17

  919. Jesus said

  920. to his disciples

  921. if you love me

  922. you will keep

  923. my commandments

  924. and I will ask

  925. the father

  926. and he will give

  927. you another helper

  928. to be with you

  929. forever

  930. even the spirit

  931. of truth

  932. whom the world

  933. cannot receive

  934. because it neither

  935. sees him

  936. nor knows him

  937. you know him

  938. for he dwells

  939. with you

  940. and will

  941. be in you.

  942. And when we read

  943. that John 14

    John 14:15

  944. verse 15

  945. and following

  946. in light of

  947. John 15

  948. 5

  949. I think it's

  950. right to

  951. restructure it

  952. a bit

  953. to hear Jesus

  954. saying

  955. if you love

  956. me

  957. I've given

  958. you the helper

  959. in fact

  960. the fact that

  961. you love me

  962. is a sign

  963. that I've given

  964. you the helper

  965. and he

  966. will help you

  967. to keep

  968. my commandments

  969. and it's

  970. these people

  971. I hope it's

  972. you people

  973. I praise God

  974. that it's

  975. me

  976. that hunger

  977. and thirst

  978. for righteousness

  979. that have this

  980. declaration spoken

  981. over us

  982. of

  983. blessed

  984. Jesus says

  985. we're the ones

  986. that are

  987. flourishing

  988. that are

  989. doing well

  990. in the place

  991. that we live

  992. and will

  993. forever

  994. why are

  995. those who

  996. hunger and thirst

  997. for righteousness

  998. declared

  999. a blessing

  1000. right

  1001. because

  1002. they shall

  1003. be

  1004. satisfied

  1005. and this

  1006. statement by

  1007. Jesus has

  1008. both present

  1009. and future

  1010. implication

  1011. those of us

  1012. who hunger

  1013. and thirst

  1014. for righteousness

  1015. will be

  1016. satisfied

  1017. in three

  1018. ways

  1019. first

  1020. and all of

  1021. these are

  1022. from the

  1023. book of

  1024. Philippians

  1025. if you

  1026. want to

  1027. go there

  1028. I'll read

  1029. carefully

  1030. to you

  1031. we will

  1032. be satisfied

  1033. in three

  1034. ways

  1035. first

  1036. we are

  1037. found

  1038. righteous

  1039. in

  1040. Jesus

  1041. Christ

  1042. those of

  1043. us who

  1044. are citizens

  1045. of God's

  1046. kingdom

  1047. finding in

  1048. us working

  1049. this longing

  1050. to be

  1051. righteous

  1052. before God

  1053. are

  1054. found

  1055. righteous

  1056. in Jesus

  1057. Christ

  1058. we have

  1059. been

  1060. declared

  1061. righteous

  1062. there is

  1063. a status

  1064. of being

  1065. righteous

  1066. Philippians

    Philippians 3:9

  1067. chapter 3

  1068. verse 9

  1069. Paul says

  1070. not having

  1071. a righteousness

  1072. of my own

  1073. that comes

  1074. from the

  1075. law

  1076. but that

  1077. which comes

  1078. through faith

  1079. in Christ

  1080. the righteousness

  1081. from God

  1082. that depends

  1083. on faith

  1084. and so

  1085. in Jesus

  1086. coming to

  1087. earth

  1088. incarnate

  1089. becoming a

  1090. man

  1091. fully

  1092. taking

  1093. on

  1094. being

  1095. 100%

  1096. man

  1097. while also

  1098. being

  1099. 100%

  1100. God

  1101. he came

  1102. and he

  1103. lived

  1104. a perfect

  1105. life

  1106. he kept

  1107. the law

  1108. in every

  1109. possible

  1110. sense

  1111. no one

  1112. else has

  1113. ever done

  1114. this

  1115. right

  1116. except

  1117. the God

  1118. man

  1119. Jesus

  1120. Christ

  1121. and so

  1122. righteousness

  1123. was his

  1124. and by

  1125. faith in

  1126. him

  1127. that

  1128. righteousness

  1129. is credited

  1130. to our

  1131. account

  1132. so we

  1133. positionally

  1134. stand before

  1135. God

  1136. as

  1137. righteous

  1138. as those

  1139. who hunger

  1140. and thirst

  1141. for it

  1142. right

  1143. we're

  1144. satisfied

  1145. because we

  1146. have it

  1147. in

  1148. Christ

  1149. in this

  1150. declarative

  1151. sense

  1152. we've been

  1153. justified

  1154. before God

  1155. he has

  1156. looked at us

  1157. and said

  1158. righteous

  1159. secondly

  1160. the second

  1161. way

  1162. is that

  1163. we will

  1164. be

  1165. increasing

  1166. in

  1167. righteousness

  1168. the

  1169. day to day

  1170. practice

  1171. of obedience

  1172. to God

  1173. the

  1174. declaration

  1175. is

  1176. waving

  1177. over us

  1178. as a

  1179. banner

  1180. and yet

  1181. we're still

  1182. meant to be

  1183. turned out

  1184. in appreciation

  1185. for what

  1186. Christ has

  1187. done for

  1188. us

  1189. in the

  1190. pursuit

  1191. of

  1192. holiness

  1193. Paul

  1194. writes

  1195. again

  1196. in

  1197. Philippians

    Philippians 2:12

  1198. chapter 2

  1199. verses 12

  1200. and 13

  1201. I'm actually

  1202. working backwards

  1203. through the

  1204. book

  1205. he says

  1206. therefore my

  1207. beloved

  1208. as you

  1209. have always

  1210. obeyed

  1211. so now

  1212. not only

  1213. as in my

  1214. presence

  1215. but much

  1216. more in

  1217. my absence

  1218. work out

  1219. your own

  1220. salvation

  1221. with fear

  1222. and trembling

  1223. now what

  1224. he's saying

  1225. here

  1226. is not

  1227. work for

  1228. your salvation

  1229. but evidence

  1230. your salvation

  1231. right

  1232. be about

  1233. the work

  1234. of one

  1235. who is

  1236. saved

  1237. one

  1238. who is

  1239. a citizen

  1240. of the

  1241. kingdom

  1242. don't

  1243. delude

  1244. yourself

  1245. and think

  1246. that you

  1247. can live

  1248. however

  1249. you want

  1250. to

  1251. those who

  1252. have been

  1253. saved

  1254. by God

  1255. who have

  1256. been

  1257. drawn

  1258. into his

  1259. kingdom

  1260. who have

  1261. been

  1262. declared

  1263. citizens

  1264. are so

  1265. glad

  1266. to live

  1267. in this

  1268. place

  1269. to be

  1270. citizens

  1271. of the

  1272. kingdom

  1273. of heaven

  1274. and therefore

  1275. serve

  1276. the king

  1277. so work

  1278. out your

  1279. salvation

  1280. with fear

  1281. you can

  1282. say

  1283. with

  1284. awe

  1285. and with

  1286. trembling

  1287. verse 13

  1288. for it is

  1289. God who

  1290. works in

  1291. you both

  1292. to will

  1293. and to

  1294. work

  1295. for his

  1296. good pleasure

  1297. so this is

  1298. the process

  1299. of

  1300. sanctification

  1301. we've been

  1302. justified

  1303. we are

  1304. being

  1305. sanctified

  1306. biblical

  1307. sanctification

  1308. is often

  1309. called

  1310. progressive

  1311. sanctification

  1312. we're getting

  1313. a little

  1314. bit better

  1315. one degree

  1316. of glory

  1317. to the

  1318. next

  1319. as we

  1320. work

  1321. and God

  1322. works

  1323. in us

  1324. for his

  1325. good pleasure

  1326. and so you

  1327. want this

  1328. to be true

  1329. of you

  1330. you want

  1331. to not only

  1332. say

  1333. hunger

  1334. and thirst

  1335. for righteousness

  1336. but evidence

  1337. your hunger

  1338. and thirst

  1339. for righteousness

  1340. by doing

  1341. good works

  1342. by being

  1343. obedient

  1344. by pursuing

  1345. righteousness

  1346. by in the

  1347. temporal sense

  1348. being filled

  1349. with

  1350. righteousness

  1351. righteousness

  1352. and then

  1353. thirdly

  1354. third way

  1355. we'll be

  1356. satisfied

  1357. as we

  1358. will one

  1359. day

  1360. be

  1361. completely

  1362. righteous

  1363. Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  1364. chapter 1

  1365. verse 6

  1366. Paul writes

  1367. to the

  1368. Philippian

  1369. church

  1370. and I

  1371. am sure

  1372. of this

  1373. that he

  1374. who began

  1375. a good

  1376. work

  1377. in you

  1378. will bring

  1379. it to

  1380. completion

  1381. at the

  1382. day

  1383. of Jesus

  1384. Christ

  1385. so the

  1386. day will

  1387. come when

  1388. Christ will

  1389. return

  1390. or will

  1391. go home

  1392. to be

  1393. with him

  1394. whoever

  1395. comes

  1396. first

  1397. and will

  1398. set aside

  1399. the burden

  1400. of his

  1401. bodies

  1402. of death

  1403. our

  1404. having been

  1405. delivered from

  1406. sin

  1407. still our

  1408. sinful

  1409. inclinations

  1410. and we

  1411. will have

  1412. no choice

  1413. but to live

  1414. rightly before

  1415. God for

  1416. forever

  1417. all of our

  1418. living will

  1419. be given

  1420. in worship

  1421. to him

  1422. and while

  1423. we await

  1424. that glorious

  1425. day

  1426. we'll be

  1427. set free

  1428. from the

  1429. hindrances

  1430. of our

  1431. flesh

  1432. and we'll

  1433. experience

  1434. the full

  1435. devotion

  1436. to God

  1437. we will

  1438. stand

  1439. confident

  1440. before him

  1441. in the

  1442. accomplished

  1443. righteousness

  1444. of Jesus

  1445. Christ

  1446. and

  1447. work

  1448. to become

  1449. righteous

  1450. by the

  1451. power

  1452. that he

  1453. works

  1454. within us

  1455. we will

  1456. hunger

  1457. and thirst

  1458. for

  1459. righteousness

  1460. righteousness

  1461. the

  1462. contemporary

  1463. pastor

  1464. John

  1465. Piper

  1466. I don't

  1467. think I have

  1468. to tell

  1469. you who

  1470. he is

  1471. but anyway

  1472. said this

  1473. in a sermon

  1474. on this

  1475. text

  1476. which I

  1477. appreciated

  1478. he said

  1479. the great

  1480. tales

  1481. of the

  1482. future

  1483. will be

  1484. written

  1485. about

  1486. real men

  1487. and women

  1488. who are

  1489. passionately

  1490. committed

  1491. to one

  1492. thing

  1493. the

  1494. righteousness

  1495. of God

  1496. Jesus

  1497. speaks to

  1498. us

  1499. today

  1500. blessed

  1501. are those

  1502. who hunger

  1503. and thirst

  1504. for

  1505. righteousness

  1506. for they

  1507. shall be

  1508. satisfied
