  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word, which I hope you have with you, and I hope that it's well read and treasured in your hearts.

  2. And turn with me to Matthew chapter 5 and verse 7.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. Matthew chapter 5 verse 7.

    Matthew 5:7

  4. For the past month we've been considering together, as we learn from Jesus' teaching in what's most often called the Sermon on the Mount,

  5. what citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven look like.

  6. The overarching question before us has been, what characterizes those who follow the King of the Kingdom?

  7. Matthew chapter 4 verse 17.

    Matthew 4:17

  8. Matthew is presented to us the very beginning of Jesus' ministry and records for us.

  9. From that time, Jesus began to preach.

  10. And he summarizes his preaching.

  11. Jesus saying, repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

  12. And then we see at the beginning of Matthew chapter 5 a crowd gathering together.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  13. And Jesus, seeing the crowds, goes up onto a mountain.

  14. And he sits down and his disciples gather around him.

  15. And then Matthew records in verse 2,

  16. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying.

  17. So we've considered, and I've asserted to you, that his primary audience are these disciples.

  18. And certainly there are others in his hearing.

  19. And we'll see much later in the sermon, he gives some very stark warning to those in his hearing.

  20. And I think it's right to understand that he's talking to those who are already citizens, those who were his disciples of this Kingdom.

  21. He's saying, this is what you will look like.

  22. Jesus declares that the citizens of his Kingdom are blessed or flourishing, we've talked a bit about.

  23. We have looked at the first four of these declarations of blessedness and seen that followers of Jesus Christ will be, verse 3,

  24. Those who recognize their spiritual poverty.

  25. Those who see that they have nothing to offer God apart from the wealth that is found in Christ.

  26. We've seen that those who mourn of their sinful state and the sinful state of the world around them,

  27. Who look at the world and see how very sin sick it is, are declared blessed.

  28. We have seen that those who are meek when wronged, people who don't seek retribution in their own cases, are blessed.

  29. And we've seen that those who have a deep longing to be found righteous and to persist in righteousness,

  30. Are declared by Jesus to be blessed.

  31. These people are declared blessed because theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

  32. They shall be comforted.

  33. They shall inherit the earth.

  34. And they shall be satisfied.

  35. So join me now in considering the next of Jesus' declarations of blessedness in Matthew 5, verse 7.

    Matthew 5:7

  36. Before I read this short verse, let me remind you, beloved,

  37. And this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  38. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  39. Matthew 5, verse 7.

    Matthew 5:7

  40. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

  41. So what does it mean to be merciful?

  42. Let's begin answering that question by stating that God is merciful.

  43. God's mercy is his goodness, particularly where people are miserable or distressed.

  44. Let me show you some examples.

  45. David says in 2 Samuel 24, 14,

  46. When Paul speaks of the fact that God comforts us in affliction in 2 Corinthians 1, verse 3,

    2 Corinthians 1:3

  47. He calls God the Father of mercies and God of all comfort.

  48. The Greek word translated in today's text, merciful,

  49. Is the same used in the Septuagint,

  50. That ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament that I spent way too much time explaining to you last week.

  51. The Septuagint uses the Greek word for the Hebrew word most common in describing God's character.

  52. The word used most often in the Hebrew language, speaking of God's character,

  53. Is this word the same that we find in our text today in the Greek language.

  54. It's often translated as mercy, love, loving kindness, or steadfast love.

  55. In most places you read in the Old Testament, you see those English words or phrases,

  56. This is that same Hebrew word translated into Greek that we find in our text today.

  57. In all of these cases, however,

  58. The idea passes beyond affection to compassion in action.

  59. It's expressed love.

  60. This loving kindness is not a feeling God has, but a way that he works.

  61. God's mercy is expressed, and it is expressed in helping those who are in need.

  62. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you are a recipient, praise the Lord, of God's mercy.

  63. He has been merciful to you.

  64. He is merciful and has expressed mercy to you.

  65. Apart from Christ, we find ourselves in an absolutely miserable state.

  66. We are separated from God and without any hope in this world.

  67. But because of God's loving kindness, because he is merciful, he has saved us in Christ.

  68. Our salvation is this great expression of God's merciful character.

  69. On your bulletin today, the Thomas Watson quote,

  70. Which I do, by the way, not as a proof to anything that I say, but to connect you to our history.

  71. We have a family that extends back through centuries.

  72. And I think it's helpful for us to see that we're not the only ones thinking in this way.

  73. Thomas Watson wrote,

  74. God is more willing to pardon than to punish.

  75. Mercy does more multiply in him than sin in us.

  76. Praise the Lord.

  77. Mercy is his nature.

  78. So God is merciful as we're considering what it means for us to be merciful.

  79. We need to also consider that Jesus Christ is merciful.

  80. Jesus is the great expression of God's mercy toward us.

  81. And he sets for us an example of being merciful.

  82. In Matthew chapter 9 and verse 27,

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  83. Two blind men cry out to Jesus saying,

  84. Have mercy on us, son of David.

  85. And we can read on that Jesus heals their blindness.

  86. John MacArthur, our contemporary pastor, in his commentary on this text, wrote,

  87. Jesus Christ was the most merciful human being who ever lived.

  88. He reached out to heal the sick, restore the crippled, give sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and even life to the dead.

  89. He found prostitutes, tax collectors, the debauched and the drunken, and drew them into a circle of love and forgiveness.

  90. Jesus wept with the sorrowing and gave compassion to the lonely.

  91. He took little children into his arms and blessed them.

  92. He was merciful to everyone.

  93. He was mercy incarnate.

  94. God's very character made flesh that we might view him and learn from him how it is that we are also meant to be merciful.

  95. Beloved praise be to God that we, who were once the destitute and the outcast,

  96. we who were in great need, miserable and distressed,

  97. have been shown mercy in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  98. Peter expresses this very sentiment in 1 Peter chapter 1 and verse 3,

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  99. where he writes,

  100. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  101. According to his great mercy,

  102. he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  103. And Paul tells us in Titus chapter 3 verse 5,

    Titus 3:5

  104. that Jesus saved us,

  105. not because of works done by us in righteousness,

  106. but according to his own mercy,

  107. by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.

  108. So we have as our great example for what it means to be merciful,

  109. this God-man who came and not only served in the temporal,

  110. but served in the eternal,

  111. laying down his very life for the sake of ours.

  112. This is the very impetus.

  113. This is the foundation on which we build lives of mercy,

  114. that God in Christ was merciful to us.

  115. It is the reason that we turn and are merciful to others.

  116. But we are not naturally merciful.

  117. This is not a thing that comes of our own doing.

  118. Before Paul's statement of that incredible truth in Titus 3.5,

  119. that we are saved according to Christ's own mercy,

  120. he writes in Titus 3 verse 3,

    Titus 3:3

  121. For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient,

  122. led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures,

  123. passing our days, listen to the opposite of mercy,

  124. in malice and envy,

  125. hated by others and hating one another.

  126. This is the natural state of man.

  127. This is where we find ourselves apart from Christ,

  128. apart from the renewing work of God,

  129. we are not merciful.

  130. This is true today,

  131. and it was most certainly true in Jesus' day.

  132. Both Roman and Jewish culture,

  133. mercy was equated,

  134. it was seen to be the same as weakness.

  135. The two walked hand in hand together.

  136. To give you just a brief example from Roman culture,

  137. when a baby was born into a family,

  138. the father could decide whether or not the baby would live.

  139. Would give the baby a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

  140. And in many cases,

  141. if the baby didn't meet the father's standard,

  142. the baby would be immediately drowned.

  143. This was natural and normal in Roman culture.

  144. Anybody in our country that wants to praise Rome,

  145. the Rome of yesteryear,

  146. oh, shake your heads at them.

  147. Slaves were put to death at the whim of the master.

  148. Wives could be put to death at the whim of the husband.

  149. The culture was not merciful.

  150. To be merciful was to be weak.

  151. And Jewish culture,

  152. despite all of their commands given in the Old Testament,

  153. also expressed lots of unmerciful attitude.

  154. Look quickly later in Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:43

  155. verse 43 and following,

  156. where Jesus says,

  157. verse 43,

  158. you have heard that it was said,

  159. so this would be a common saying of the day,

  160. you have heard that it was said,

  161. you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  162. So here's the common teaching of the day.

  163. Be unmerciful.

  164. What is Jesus' response to this teaching?

  165. He says,

  166. with the authority that Christ could bring to bear,

  167. but I say to you,

  168. love your enemies

  169. and pray for those who persecute you, right?

  170. Be merciful so that you may be sons of your father who is in heaven.

  171. For he makes his son rise on the evil and on the good

  172. and sends rain on the just and the unjust, right?

  173. Be merciful as your father in heaven is merciful.

  174. Prove yourself to be sons by expressing his character.

  175. And he goes on,

  176. verses 46 and 47,

  177. for if you love those who love you,

  178. what reward do you have?

  179. How easy is it to love those who love us?

  180. Do not even tax collectors do the same?

  181. And if you greet only your brothers,

  182. what more are you doing than others?

  183. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  184. It's of no benefit to you,

  185. but rather be merciful.

  186. Also, Matthew chapter 23 and verse 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  187. Jesus says,

  188. these are often called the woes.

  189. He speaks woes to the Pharisees,

  190. which are quite the opposite of these declarations of blessedness.

  191. He says,

  192. woe to you,

  193. scribes and Pharisees,

  194. hypocrites,

  195. for you tithe mint and dill and cumin.

  196. They were down to the tithe

  197. and these very,

  198. very tiny things,

  199. these very particular things,

  200. which Jesus commends them for,

  201. but then says,

  202. and you have neglected the weightier matters of the law,

  203. justice and mercy and faithfulness.

  204. These you ought to have done without neglecting the others.

  205. So,

  206. the one of the ruling classes,

  207. religious Jews of the day,

  208. Jesus says to them,

  209. woe to you,

  210. you hypocrites,

  211. you care about stuff,

  212. so tiny.

  213. He says later in chapter 23,

  214. that you strain out the gnat

  215. and you swallow the camel.

  216. You're neglecting the weighty matters of the law.

  217. There's another account that makes a similar point in Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  218. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  219. You can mark Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  220. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  221. Let me invite you to turn there with me.

  222. This is likely a story familiar to you.

  223. Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  224. beginning in verse 25.

  225. Jesus is making this very point.

  226. This teaching would have just been astonishing to them

  227. because remember,

  228. this is a people who are not naturally merciful.

  229. This is what they're talking about right now.

  230. The culture of the day.

  231. Not naturally merciful.

  232. Beginning in verse 25.

  233. And behold,

  234. a lawyer stood up to put him to the test,

  235. saying,

  236. Teacher,

  237. what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  238. And Jesus said to him,

  239. what is written in the law?

  240. How do you read it?

  241. And he answered,

  242. you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  243. with all your soul,

  244. and with all your strength,

  245. and with all your mind,

  246. and your neighbor as yourself.

  247. And Jesus said to him,

  248. you have answered correctly.

  249. Do this,

  250. and you will live.

  251. Right?

  252. So it's the right answer.

  253. One of the themes of the Sermon on the Mount

  254. is whole person righteousness.

  255. So not merely the exterior of rightness,

  256. but the interior as well.

  257. And this man needed this to be addressed,

  258. this lawyer.

  259. So verse 29,

  260. but he,

  261. desiring to justify himself,

  262. right?

  263. Not a man who's poor in spirit,

  264. said to Jesus,

  265. and who is my neighbor?

  266. Jesus replied,

  267. you don't ask Jesus questions like this.

  268. Jesus replied,

  269. a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,

  270. and he fell among robbers,

  271. this was a dangerous road to travel,

  272. who stripped him,

  273. and beat him,

  274. and departed,

  275. leaving him half dead.

  276. Now in the eyes of the religious elite,

  277. this would have made him dirty,

  278. unclean,

  279. right?

  280. They couldn't practice mercy,

  281. because they didn't want to defile themselves

  282. with the blood of this man.

  283. So verse 31,

  284. now by chance,

  285. a priest was going down that road,

  286. and when he saw him,

  287. he passed by on the other side.

  288. So likewise,

  289. a Levite,

  290. when he came to the place and saw him,

  291. passed by on the other side.

  292. But a Samaritan,

  293. now understand,

  294. to Jesus' Jewish audience,

  295. found here in Luke chapter 10,

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  296. the Samaritans were not a liked people,

  297. right?

  298. There's a lot of misunderstanding,

  299. miscommunication.

  300. Look up what a Samaritan is,

  301. and you get all kinds of answers.

  302. But most likely,

  303. Samaritans were people that had intermarried

  304. during the Assyrian captivity,

  305. and were transplanted back into the Samaritan town.

  306. So Jews perceived them as kind of half-breeds.

  307. When Israel was resettled,

  308. the second temple,

  309. the Samaritans wanted to help in the building of it,

  310. and they denied them the ability to,

  311. and so they had built their own temple,

  312. and had their own form of worship.

  313. So there's a lot of butting heads between the two.

  314. So you need to see that this Samaritan

  315. is expressing that his neighbor

  316. is this Jewish man

  317. that's been beaten and left

  318. on the side of the road.

  319. So verse 33,

  320. But a Samaritan,

  321. as he journeyed,

  322. came to where he was,

  323. and when he saw him,

  324. he had compassion.

  325. He went to him and bound up his wounds,

  326. pouring on oil and wine disinfectant.

  327. Then he set him on his own animal

  328. and brought him to an inn

  329. and took care of him.

  330. And the next day,

  331. he took out two denarii,

  332. two days' wages,

  333. and gave them to the innkeeper,

  334. saying,

  335. Take care of him,

  336. and whatever more you spend,

  337. I will repay you when I come back.

  338. Which of these three do you think

  339. proved to be a neighbor

  340. to the man who fell among the robbers?

  341. And he said,

  342. the lawyer said,

  343. the one who showed him mercy.

  344. And Jesus said to him,

  345. You go and do likewise.

  346. So in very practical ways,

  347. express this attitude of mercifulness.

  348. Go and be merciful.

  349. If you're to love the Lord your God,

  350. as the lawyer said,

  351. with all your heart,

  352. and with all your soul,

  353. and with all your strength,

  354. and with all your mind,

  355. and your neighbor as yourself,

  356. this will get expressed.

  357. We are not naturally merciful,

  358. but we are called to be merciful.

  359. Those who have been made new

  360. in Jesus Christ will be.

  361. This will be the evidencing

  362. that we've been made new in Christ.

  363. We will be merciful.

  364. Those who have received mercy

  365. will express mercy.

  366. And beloved,

  367. we do not do this perfectly.

  368. But we should desire to do it perfectly.

  369. We should be seeing the outworking

  370. of these first four beatitudes.

  371. That we recognize we're poor in spirit.

  372. We're broken over our sin

  373. and the sin of the world.

  374. We find ourselves meek,

  375. submitting ourselves to the will of the Father.

  376. Not seeking retribution

  377. for our own rights to be defended.

  378. We're hungering

  379. and we're thirsting for righteousness.

  380. And this begins to work itself out

  381. in things like mercy.

  382. Now, God has in his character

  383. incommunicable and communicable attributes.

  384. That is to say,

  385. incommunicable attributes

  386. are characteristics

  387. that we as human beings

  388. cannot emulate.

  389. Praise God, that's true, right?

  390. That he's God and we're not.

  391. He's the creator.

  392. He created all things

  393. and we're the created.

  394. Some examples of this

  395. would be God's independence.

  396. You may remember from a while ago,

  397. God's aseity.

  398. That he plugs into nothing,

  399. but everything plugs into him.

  400. He's self-existent.

  401. We're not.

  402. We're dependent upon

  403. this creator God

  404. who has made us

  405. and sustains us.

  406. God is also unchangeable.

  407. It's one of his attributes.

  408. It's unchangeableness,

  409. if you'll allow,

  410. or immutability.

  411. God does not change,

  412. but praise the Lord,

  413. we do,

  414. and hopefully,

  415. we're changing for the better.

  416. But the communicable attributes

  417. are things,

  418. characteristics of God

  419. that we can,

  420. by grace,

  421. and should emulate.

  422. and merciful,

  423. loving,

  424. kind,

  425. is one

  426. of those attributes

  427. that,

  428. by the power that God

  429. works within us,

  430. we can emulate.

  431. Not with perfection,

  432. not the way he expresses it,

  433. but we can be pressing

  434. and working

  435. in that direction.

  436. We can serve

  437. as image bearers

  438. in the way

  439. that we're merciful

  440. to others.

  441. Beloved,

  442. we show ourselves

  443. to be citizens

  444. of the kingdom of heaven

  445. by being merciful,

  446. by showing

  447. that we follow

  448. the king

  449. of this kingdom,

  450. by feeding the hungry,

  451. caring for the orphan

  452. and the widow,

  453. by comforting

  454. the bereaved,

  455. by loving the lonely

  456. and rejected,

  457. by forgiving

  458. the offender,

  459. by showing

  460. compassion

  461. to the destitute.

  462. I am glad

  463. to be part

  464. of a church

  465. that as I think

  466. about what it means

  467. to be merciful,

  468. I can trace

  469. acts of mercy

  470. even in this week.

  471. Even mercy

  472. expressed toward me.

  473. Paul writes

  474. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:3

  475. chapter 1

  476. verse 3 and 4,

  477. Blessed be the God

  478. and Father

  479. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  480. the Father of mercies

  481. and God

  482. of all comfort.

  483. I read that to you

  484. previously.

  485. But verse 4

  486. goes on to say,

  487. Who comforts us

  488. in all our affliction

  489. so that we

  490. may be able

  491. to comfort those

  492. who are in any

  493. affliction

  494. with the comfort

  495. with which we

  496. ourselves

  497. are comforted

  498. by God.

  499. You see,

  500. God comforts,

  501. God is merciful

  502. toward us

  503. in our affliction

  504. so that

  505. we can be

  506. comforters,

  507. be merciful

  508. to others

  509. in their

  510. affliction,

  511. in the same

  512. way.

  513. So we're meant

  514. to be merciful,

  515. right?

  516. By God's grace,

  517. those of us

  518. who have been

  519. made new

  520. in Christ

  521. are meant

  522. to live

  523. this way.

  524. Jesus told

  525. a parable

  526. as a warning

  527. to those

  528. who are not

  529. merciful.

  530. And I want you

  531. to also turn

  532. there with me.

  533. So turn to

  534. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  535. 18

  536. and verse

  537. 23.

  538. The uninspired

  539. subtitle you'll

  540. probably see in

  541. your copy of

  542. God's word

  543. will be

  544. the unmerciful

  545. servant.

  546. It's a very

  547. apt title

  548. for this

  549. parable.

  550. Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  551. chapter 18

  552. beginning in

  553. verse 23

  554. and following.

  555. Jesus said

  556. the kingdom

  557. of heaven

  558. may be

  559. compared to

  560. a king

  561. who wished

  562. to settle

  563. accounts

  564. with the

  565. servants.

  566. So you see

  567. very careful

  568. what he's

  569. saying here,

  570. right?

  571. He's saying

  572. this is what

  573. the kingdom

  574. of heaven

  575. is like.

  576. This is

  577. how it

  578. operates.

  579. As those

  580. who are

  581. either in

  582. that kingdom

  583. or those

  584. who are not

  585. but may be

  586. looking into

  587. it and

  588. desiring to

  589. be part

  590. of it,

  591. we should

  592. really listen

  593. to what's

  594. being said

  595. here by

  596. our Lord

  597. and Savior.

  598. Verse 24,

  599. when he

  600. began to

  601. settle,

  602. one was

  603. brought to

  604. him who

  605. owed him

  606. 10,000

  607. talents.

  608. Now,

  609. this is a

  610. staggering

  611. sum of

  612. money.

  613. You'll see

  614. people,

  615. they'll try

  616. to say

  617. this would

  618. be like

  619. millions

  620. and millions

  621. of dollars

  622. today,

  623. but it's

  624. not really

  625. an amount

  626. you could

  627. put a

  628. figure on.

  629. A talent

  630. was the

  631. largest

  632. unit in

  633. that modern

  634. in the day

  635. of currency,

  636. the largest

  637. unit,

  638. and 10,000

  639. was the

  640. highest figure

  641. used in

  642. ancient

  643. accounting.

  644. So he's

  645. using the

  646. two very

  647. highest numbers

  648. he possibly

  649. could use

  650. in this case

  651. to say this

  652. was an

  653. astounding

  654. debt.

  655. This was a

  656. debt that

  657. was not

  658. going to

  659. be repaid.

  660. Verse 25

  661. And since

  662. he could

  663. not pay,

  664. his master

  665. ordered him

  666. to be sold

  667. with his

  668. wife and

  669. children and

  670. all that

  671. he had

  672. and payment

  673. to be

  674. made.

  675. So the

  676. servant fell

  677. on his

  678. knees,

  679. imploring

  680. him,

  681. have patience

  682. with me

  683. and I will

  684. pay you

  685. everything.

  686. And out

  687. of pity

  688. for him,

  689. the master

  690. of that

  691. servant

  692. released him

  693. and forgave

  694. him the

  695. debt.

  696. What an

  697. astounding

  698. thing.

  699. This

  700. unpay

  701. able

  702. debt.

  703. He deserved

  704. to be

  705. sold and

  706. to be

  707. punished

  708. until he

  709. could pay

  710. the debt.

  711. And this

  712. servant says

  713. there's not

  714. a chance

  715. I'll pay

  716. it back.

  717. Have

  718. mercy

  719. on me.

  720. And he's

  721. forgiven

  722. the debt.

  723. Verse 28

  724. But when the

  725. same servant

  726. went out,

  727. he found

  728. one of his

  729. fellow servants

  730. who owed

  731. him a

  732. hundred

  733. denarii.

  734. And seizing

  735. him,

  736. he began

  737. to choke

  738. him,

  739. saying,

  740. pay what

  741. you owe.

  742. Now,

  743. this is

  744. comparatively

  745. a hundred

  746. denarii,

  747. comparatively

  748. a fraction

  749. of what he

  750. owed his

  751. master.

  752. It's a

  753. fraction.

  754. A denarius

  755. being the

  756. common silver

  757. coin of the

  758. day,

  759. was equivalent

  760. to about a

  761. day's wage

  762. for a

  763. laborer.

  764. Kind of the

  765. typical blue

  766. collar wage

  767. of the day.

  768. So I think

  769. it's important

  770. for us to

  771. note that

  772. this is still

  773. a great

  774. sum.

  775. This is

  776. three months

  777. wages.

  778. I think

  779. about three

  780. months wages.

  781. Man,

  782. that's a

  783. debt.

  784. That's a

  785. debt owed.

  786. Right?

  787. But it's

  788. relatively

  789. insignificant.

  790. It's

  791. relatively

  792. insignificant.

  793. Verse 29.

  794. So his

  795. fellow servant

  796. fell down

  797. and pleaded

  798. with him,

  799. have patience

  800. with me

  801. and I

  802. will pay

  803. you.

  804. He refused

  805. and went

  806. and put him

  807. in prison

  808. until he

  809. should pay

  810. the debt.

  811. When his

  812. fellow servant

  813. saw what

  814. had taken

  815. place,

  816. they were

  817. greatly

  818. distressed

  819. and they

  820. went and

  821. reported to

  822. their master

  823. all that

  824. had taken

  825. place.

  826. Then his

  827. master summoned

  828. him and

  829. said to

  830. him,

  831. you wicked

  832. servant,

  833. I forgave

  834. you all

  835. that debt

  836. because you

  837. pleaded with

  838. me and

  839. should not

  840. you have

  841. had mercy

  842. on your

  843. fellow servant

  844. as I

  845. had mercy

  846. on you.

  847. And in

  848. anger,

  849. his master

  850. delivered him

  851. to the

  852. jailers until

  853. he should

  854. pay all

  855. his debt.

  856. So also

  857. my heavenly

  858. father will

  859. do to

  860. every one

  861. of you

  862. if you

  863. do not

  864. forgive

  865. your brother

  866. from your

  867. heart.

  868. So here

  869. we see

  870. a man

  871. who has

  872. received

  873. astounding

  874. mercy,

  875. this offer

  876. of forgiveness

  877. of his debt,

  878. but he

  879. doesn't turn

  880. and offer

  881. the same.

  882. Jesus is

  883. saying this

  884. is what the

  885. kingdom of

  886. heaven could

  887. be compared

  888. to.

  889. We,

  890. owing

  891. an astounding

  892. unpayable

  893. infinite

  894. debt

  895. to God

  896. have seen

  897. by faith

  898. that debt

  899. canceled

  900. and the

  901. infinite

  902. righteousness

  903. of Christ

  904. credited

  905. to us

  906. and so

  907. we ought

  908. to then

  909. turn and

  910. offer

  911. the same

  912. kind of

  913. forgiveness

  914. to others.

  915. Right?

  916. Little

  917. infinitesimal

  918. debts now

  919. owed us.

  920. We ought to

  921. be turning

  922. around to

  923. others

  924. and offering

  925. them an

  926. astounding

  927. amount

  928. of mercy.

  929. Beloved,

  930. it is wrong

  931. for the church

  932. not to be

  933. part of

  934. mercy ministries

  935. because we

  936. pay our

  937. taxes.

  938. It is wrong

  939. for us to

  940. feel embittered

  941. towards those

  942. who take

  943. advantage

  944. of social

  945. welfare.

  946. We ought

  947. to go

  948. to them,

  949. right?

  950. Hearts

  951. recognizing

  952. that we

  953. have been

  954. forgiven,

  955. that we

  956. have taken

  957. advantage

  958. and offer

  959. great

  960. mercy.

  961. to these

  962. people.

  963. This is

  964. the way

  965. we're

  966. meant to

  967. live as

  968. citizens of

  969. the kingdom

  970. of heaven.

  971. And so

  972. why does

  973. Jesus

  974. declare

  975. blessed

  976. these

  977. people,

  978. these

  979. merciful

  980. people?

  981. And our

  982. text says,

  983. for they

  984. shall

  985. receive

  986. mercy.

  987. Those

  988. who have

  989. received

  990. mercy will

  991. be merciful

  992. and

  993. therefore

  994. will

  995. receive

  996. mercy.

  997. It's a

  998. great big

  999. mercy loop.

  1000. In

  1001. Matthew

    Matthew 25:31

  1002. chapter

  1003. 25,

  1004. verse 31

  1005. and following,

  1006. Jesus

  1007. speaks of

  1008. the final

  1009. judgment

  1010. and the

  1011. basis for

  1012. his

  1013. judgment,

  1014. as we

  1015. will see,

  1016. is mercy

  1017. shown to

  1018. others.

  1019. So join me

  1020. there.

  1021. I know

  1022. there's a lot

  1023. of text

  1024. today.

  1025. Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1026. chapter 25.

  1027. Now hear me

  1028. carefully as we

  1029. read this.

  1030. We are not

  1031. saying that

  1032. because we're

  1033. merciful, we

  1034. earn God's

  1035. favor.

  1036. We've been

  1037. shown mercy

  1038. and so we're

  1039. merciful, right?

  1040. We're found

  1041. in him.

  1042. We're

  1043. citizens of

  1044. the kingdom

  1045. and this

  1046. is the

  1047. evidence,

  1048. right?

  1049. This is the

  1050. evidence that

  1051. we've received

  1052. the mercy

  1053. of God

  1054. and will

  1055. fully and

  1056. finally receive

  1057. the mercy

  1058. of God.

  1059. So do not

  1060. get that wrong.

  1061. No one is

  1062. saying that

  1063. we're saved

  1064. by our

  1065. works here.

  1066. Listen to what

  1067. Jesus says,

  1068. verse 31

  1069. and following.

  1070. When the

  1071. Son of Man

  1072. comes in

  1073. his glory

  1074. and all

  1075. the angels

  1076. with him,

  1077. then he will

  1078. sit on his

  1079. glorious throne.

  1080. Before him

  1081. will be gathered

  1082. all the nations

  1083. and he will

  1084. separate people

  1085. one from

  1086. another as a

  1087. shepherd separates

  1088. the sheep

  1089. from the goats

  1090. and he will

  1091. place the sheep

  1092. on his right

  1093. but the goats

  1094. on his left.

  1095. So there's going

  1096. to be this final

  1097. judgment.

  1098. There's going

  1099. to be a

  1100. separation

  1101. and we want

  1102. to be counted

  1103. among the

  1104. sheep.

  1105. Those who are

  1106. placed in the

  1107. place of honor

  1108. at the right

  1109. of the glorious

  1110. throne.

  1111. Verse 34

  1112. Then the king

  1113. will say to

  1114. those on his

  1115. right,

  1116. Come you

  1117. who are blessed

  1118. by my father.

  1119. Inherit the

  1120. kingdom prepared

  1121. for you from

  1122. the foundation

  1123. of the world.

  1124. For I was

  1125. hungry and

  1126. you gave me

  1127. food.

  1128. I was thirsty

  1129. and you gave

  1130. me drink.

  1131. I was a

  1132. stranger and

  1133. you welcomed

  1134. me.

  1135. I was naked

  1136. and you clothed

  1137. me.

  1138. I was sick

  1139. and you visited

  1140. me.

  1141. I was in

  1142. prison and

  1143. you came to

  1144. me.

  1145. All things,

  1146. all things

  1147. that we can

  1148. do.

  1149. Verse 37

  1150. Then the

  1151. righteous will

  1152. answer him

  1153. saying,

  1154. Lord,

  1155. when did we

  1156. see you hungry

  1157. and feed you

  1158. or thirsty

  1159. and give you

  1160. drink?

  1161. And when

  1162. do we see

  1163. you a stranger

  1164. and welcome

  1165. you or naked

  1166. and clothe

  1167. you?

  1168. And when

  1169. do we see

  1170. you sick

  1171. or in

  1172. prison and

  1173. visit you?

  1174. And the

  1175. king will

  1176. answer them,

  1177. Truly,

  1178. I say to

  1179. you,

  1180. as you did

  1181. it to one

  1182. of the least

  1183. of these,

  1184. my brothers,

  1185. you did

  1186. it to

  1187. me.

  1188. I pray

  1189. that you

  1190. count yourself

  1191. and that

  1192. others who

  1193. are examining

  1194. your life

  1195. count you

  1196. among these

  1197. blessed

  1198. sheep.

  1199. That we

  1200. can say of

  1201. ourselves and

  1202. that people

  1203. who are

  1204. around us

  1205. looking at

  1206. our lives

  1207. or inviting

  1208. into our

  1209. lives can

  1210. say,

  1211. Merciful,

  1212. yes,

  1213. merciful,

  1214. you are

  1215. merciful.

  1216. As God's

  1217. been merciful

  1218. to you,

  1219. you are

  1220. merciful.

  1221. this

  1222. working

  1223. is the

  1224. evidence

  1225. of your

  1226. salvation,

  1227. that you

  1228. belong to

  1229. the kingdom

  1230. of heaven.

  1231. I pray

  1232. that you

  1233. are not

  1234. counted

  1235. amongst

  1236. the goats.

  1237. Verse 41,

  1238. then he

  1239. will say

  1240. to those

  1241. on his

  1242. left,

  1243. depart

  1244. from me,

  1245. you cursed

  1246. into the

  1247. eternal fire

  1248. prepared for

  1249. the devil

  1250. and his

  1251. angels.

  1252. For I

  1253. was hungry

  1254. and you

  1255. gave me

  1256. no food.

  1257. I was

  1258. thirsty

  1259. and you

  1260. gave me

  1261. no drink.

  1262. I was

  1263. a stranger

  1264. and you

  1265. did not

  1266. welcome

  1267. me,

  1268. naked

  1269. and you

  1270. did not

  1271. clothe

  1272. me,

  1273. sick

  1274. and in

  1275. prison

  1276. and you

  1277. did not

  1278. visit me.

  1279. Then they

  1280. also will

  1281. answer

  1282. saying,

  1283. Lord,

  1284. when did

  1285. we see

  1286. you hungry

  1287. or thirsty

  1288. or a

  1289. stranger

  1290. or naked

  1291. or sick

  1292. or in

  1293. prison

  1294. and did

  1295. not

  1296. minister

  1297. to you?

  1298. Then you

  1299. will answer

  1300. them saying,

  1301. truly I

  1302. say to you,

  1303. as you

  1304. did not

  1305. do it

  1306. to one

  1307. of the

  1308. least of

  1309. these,

  1310. you did

  1311. not do

  1312. it to

  1313. me.

  1314. And these

  1315. will go

  1316. away

  1317. into

  1318. eternal

  1319. punishment,

  1320. but the

  1321. righteous

  1322. into

  1323. eternal

  1324. life.

  1325. There's

  1326. a weighty

  1327. thing to

  1328. consider

  1329. here,

  1330. to really

  1331. ask

  1332. ourselves,

  1333. and again,

  1334. those around

  1335. us,

  1336. those who

  1337. are following

  1338. the way

  1339. of Christ,

  1340. those who

  1341. are citizens

  1342. of the

  1343. kingdom,

  1344. am I

  1345. merciful?

  1346. Does this

  1347. characterize

  1348. my life?

  1349. Some of

  1350. you may

  1351. know about

  1352. the mercy

  1353. of God,

  1354. but have

  1355. yet to

  1356. experience

  1357. the mercy

  1358. of God,

  1359. have yet

  1360. to turn

  1361. to Christ

  1362. by faith.

  1363. And we

  1364. have a

  1365. beautiful

  1366. promise in

  1367. closing in

  1368. James 2,

    James 2:13

  1369. verse 13.

  1370. James writes,

  1371. for judgment

  1372. is without

  1373. mercy to

  1374. one who

  1375. has shown

  1376. no mercy.

  1377. Hear that

  1378. again.

  1379. For judgment

  1380. is without

  1381. mercy to

  1382. one who

  1383. has shown

  1384. no mercy.

  1385. Mercy,

  1386. triumphs

  1387. over judgment.

  1388. So Jesus

  1389. says,

  1390. blessed are

  1391. the merciful,

  1392. for they

  1393. shall receive

  1394. mercy.

  1395. Let's pray

  1396. together.
