  1. Our text for today is Matthew chapter 5 and verse 8.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. ! In our study of the Sermon on the Mount in the past weeks,

  3. we have seen the overarching question before us,

  4. ! What characterizes those who follow the King of the Kingdom of Heaven?

  5. We have noted back many times in Matthew chapter 4,

    Matthew 4:17

  6. verse 17. Matthew records the beginning of Jesus' ministry and says,

  7. from that time Jesus began to preach, saying,

  8. repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

  9. This was the theme of Jesus' teaching.

  10. And then we saw at the beginning of Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  11. that crowds gather and they gather onto an unnamed mountain.

  12. And when Jesus sits down, His disciples come to Him.

  13. And He opens His mouth and He teaches them.

  14. So, the primary audience for this sermon are Jesus' disciples.

  15. Those who are already His followers.

  16. And Jesus is here declaring that the citizens of His Kingdom are blessed or flourishing.

  17. They're doing well as citizens of this Kingdom.

  18. We've looked at the first five of these declarations of blessedness.

  19. And this morning I invite you to join me in considering the sixth.

  20. Before I read it, I want to remind you, beloved,

  21. this is God's Word to us.

  22. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  23. We would all do well to listen to it

  24. in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  25. Matthew chapter 5 and verse 8.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  26. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  27. Jesus declares that the pure in heart are blessed.

  28. And so we must endeavor to know what is meant by this.

  29. The great 18th century pastor Martin Lloyd-Jones

  30. referred to Matthew chapter 5 verse 8

    Matthew 5:8

  31. as one of the greatest utterances in all of Scripture.

  32. Whether or not you agree with his assertion,

  33. there is much to be said about such a verse.

  34. In fact, volumes upon volumes of work

  35. have been written on this small phrase.

  36. Now, our time this morning will not allow us

  37. to probe the very depths of such a declaration.

  38. Our time will only permit us to get at its central meaning.

  39. That's the intention of today.

  40. So, be encouraged to consider its meaning further.

  41. Not just a text like this,

  42. but any text that we open together as a church.

  43. Meditate upon it throughout the week

  44. and have conversations about it.

  45. You, with the rest of the church,

  46. probe the depths of the things that we study

  47. on Sunday morning.

  48. That said, I would like to first deal this morning

  49. from our text with the word heart.

  50. What is this heart that is meant to be pure?

  51. Recall that one of the two overarching themes

  52. that I have asserted

  53. carried throughout the Sermon on the Mount

  54. is this idea of whole person righteousness.

  55. This beatitude speaks directly to this theme.

  56. So, we should not be at all surprised

  57. that Jesus speaks of the heart

  58. in this most famous of His sermons.

  59. So, this idea of whole person righteousness

  60. and then Jesus uses this word

  61. that means whole person.

  62. There is great biblical emphasis placed

  63. upon the heart and the condition of it.

  64. When you see this word heart

  65. in your English translation

  66. of both the Old and New Testaments,

  67. it is most often, not in every case,

  68. but it is most often referring

  69. to our very being.

  70. The non-physical part of you.

  71. Your mind, your will,

  72. your personality, right?

  73. What makes you you

  74. apart from this flesh vessel

  75. that carries the you that you are.

  76. And the heart is the source

  77. of all that we are.

  78. Proverbs 4.23 says,

  79. keep your heart with all vigilance.

  80. Why?

  81. For from it flows the springs of life.

  82. Let's look briefly at some other places

  83. in the Bible that will help us

  84. to see this point concerning the heart

  85. and the condition of it.

  86. So first, in the Old Testament,

  87. when God is deciding

  88. that He will destroy the earth

  89. with a flood,

  90. in Genesis 6.5 we can read,

  91. the Lord saw that the wickedness of man

  92. was great in the earth

  93. and that every intention

  94. of the thoughts of his heart

  95. was only evil continually.

  96. So man in his very being

  97. was nothing but evil, right?

  98. And God looks at this

  99. and says it must be destroyed.

  100. Psalm 27.8

  101. David says,

  102. you have said,

  103. seek my face.

  104. And then the response of David is,

  105. my heart says to you,

  106. your face Lord,

  107. do I seek.

  108. And then in Ezekiel 36.

  109. And verse 26.

  110. And if you're doing

  111. the Bible reading with us,

  112. this was from yesterday's reading.

  113. God says,

  114. and I will give you a new heart

  115. and a new spirit I will put within you.

  116. And I will remove the heart of stone

  117. from your flesh

  118. and give you a heart of flesh.

  119. We know this as the doctrine

  120. of regeneration.

  121. I will change your very being.

  122. And in the New Testament,

  123. those are just a few

  124. of the Old Testament examples.

  125. In the New Testament,

  126. Matthew chapter 15,

    Matthew 15:17

  127. verse 17 and following.

  128. Jesus says,

  129. do you not see that

  130. whatever goes into the mouth

  131. passes into the stomach

  132. and is expelled?

  133. He's simply saying,

  134. the stuff that you eat

  135. is not what defiles you.

  136. Because it leaves you.

  137. But what comes out of the mouth

  138. proceeds from the heart.

  139. From who you are.

  140. In verse 18,

  141. the last half says,

  142. and this defiles a person.

  143. For out of the heart

  144. come evil thoughts,

  145. murder,

  146. adultery,

  147. sexual immorality,

  148. theft,

  149. false witness,

  150. slander.

  151. So,

  152. if you are evil,

  153. then you do evil.

  154. In Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  155. in verse 18,

  156. Paul makes a case

  157. that those who are in Christ,

  158. who have been made new,

  159. are to no longer walk

  160. as those who have not been made new.

  161. And he says this of those people.

  162. They are darkened in their understanding,

  163. alienated from the life of God

  164. because of the ignorance

  165. that is in them

  166. due to their hardness of heart.

  167. And then those who have been set free,

  168. those who have been set free

  169. from the bondage of sin,

  170. who have been made regenerate.

  171. Paul writes of them in Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6:17

  172. verse 17,

  173. Thanks be to God

  174. that you who were once slaves of sin

  175. have become obedient from the heart

  176. to the standard of teaching

  177. to which you were committed.

  178. So, Jesus says

  179. that it is a person

  180. who has purity of being

  181. that are declared blessed.

  182. Note carefully in Matthew 5, verse 8,

    Matthew 5:8

  183. that he says pure in heart,

  184. not pure in head.

  185. You can come up with all the right answers

  186. and still be desperately lost.

  187. In the day in which we live,

  188. there are many, many

  189. who could explain the gospel of Jesus Christ to you

  190. but have not placed believing faith in it.

  191. It is the pure in heart

  192. that are declared blessed by Jesus,

  193. not the pure in head.

  194. And I should say,

  195. not only pure in head,

  196. for surely our very being

  197. includes our thought life.

  198. Matthew chapter 15, verse 8,

    Matthew 15:8

  199. Jesus says,

  200. This people honors me with their lips,

  201. but their heart is far from me.

  202. Note also that Jesus says,

  203. pure in heart,

  204. not pure in conduct.

  205. You can appear to be pure by your action

  206. and still be desperately lost.

  207. It is the pure in heart

  208. that are declared blessed by Jesus,

  209. not the pure in conduct.

  210. Again, I should say,

  211. not only pure in conduct,

  212. for surely our very in being

  213. includes our actions.

  214. In fact, the way we think

  215. and feel and act

  216. is the proofing of who we are.

  217. It's the evidencing of who we are.

  218. But it is who we are,

  219. not what we do,

  220. that is Jesus' focus here.

  221. In Matthew chapter 23,

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  222. it's the chapter known as the woes chapter.

  223. Jesus declares the woes,

  224. the seven woes over the Pharisees.

  225. And one of them,

  226. verse 25 and following,

  227. he says,

  228. Woe to you,

  229. scribes and Pharisees,

  230. hypocrites.

  231. For you clean the outside

  232. of the cup and the plate,

  233. but inside they are full of greed

  234. and self-indulgence.

  235. So you see what he's saying?

  236. You clean up the outside of it, right?

  237. You make it look nice on the outside,

  238. but the actual useful part is dirty.

  239. You catching that?

  240. I don't care if my cup is dirty on the outside,

  241. if the inside is clean.

  242. Your focus is all wrong here.

  243. You don't clean up the inside.

  244. Inside,

  245. you're full of greed and self-indulgence.

  246. And then verse 26,

  247. you blind Pharisees.

  248. First clean the inside of the cup

  249. and the plate,

  250. that the outside also may be clean.

  251. So if our hearts are pure,

  252. then what proceeds from us

  253. will be purity.

  254. So Jesus is concerned

  255. about the totality of who we are

  256. as he addresses our hearts this morning.

  257. But let us now consider

  258. the qualifier that Jesus puts

  259. on the heart that is declared blessed.

  260. Jesus says it is the pure in heart

  261. that are flourishing.

  262. What then does it mean

  263. to be pure in heart?

  264. For the totality of our inner selves

  265. to be pure.

  266. Now this is a word

  267. with some texture to it.

  268. First, it can mean

  269. without hypocrisy

  270. or singularly focused.

  271. Psalm 86.11.

  272. David, I believe,

  273. if I'm remembering correctly,

  274. says,

  275. Teach me your way,

  276. O Lord,

  277. that I may walk in your truth.

  278. Unite my heart

  279. to fear your name.

  280. Don't let me be a man

  281. who is divided.

  282. But put my heart

  283. into a singular focus

  284. that stands in the awe of God

  285. so that I will walk in your truth.

  286. Paul writes in Romans 7.

  287. The opposite of this.

  288. An ununited heart.

  289. Verse 21 and 22.

  290. He says,

  291. So I find it to be a law

  292. that when I want to do right,

  293. evil lies close at hand.

  294. For I delight in the law of God

  295. in my inner being.

  296. And he goes on to talk about

  297. this great struggle

  298. of these two things

  299. that wage war within him.

  300. An ununited heart.

  301. So,

  302. pure means without hypocrisy.

  303. It also means without blemish

  304. or without any uncleanliness.

  305. The Apostle John writes

  306. in Revelation 21 and verse 27,

  307. Nothing unclean will ever enter

  308. the new Jerusalem.

  309. Nor anyone who does

  310. what is detestable or false,

  311. but only those who are written

  312. in the Lamb's book of life.

  313. And then later in Revelation 22

  314. and verse 14,

  315. Blessed are those who wash their robes

  316. that they may have the right

  317. to the tree of life

  318. and that they may enter the city

  319. by the gates.

  320. So,

  321. to be pure also means

  322. to be washed clean,

  323. to be without blemish.

  324. So,

  325. to be without hypocrisy

  326. and to be without blemish,

  327. but I think for us

  328. to be pure in heart

  329. most emphatically means

  330. for us to be like

  331. Jesus Christ.

  332. A great example of

  333. purity

  334. of heart.

  335. The writer of Hebrews

  336. speaks at length about this

  337. in Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  338. I want to read to you

  339. just verse 15.

  340. Where the writer of Hebrews

  341. speaks of Jesus

  342. as a great high priest.

  343. And the high priest

  344. who went in to make sacrifice

  345. on the day of atonement

  346. had to be sacrificially

  347. washed clean.

  348. He had to go through

  349. a ton of process

  350. to be considered clean

  351. in order to enter

  352. into the presence of God.

  353. The writer of Hebrews

  354. says this about Jesus.

  355. For we do not have

  356. a high priest

  357. who was unable

  358. to sympathize

  359. with our weakness,

  360. but one who in every respect

  361. has been tempted

  362. as we are

  363. yet without sin.

  364. So,

  365. already pure.

  366. It doesn't have to go

  367. through ritualistic cleansing,

  368. but Jesus Christ

  369. himself

  370. is

  371. pure.

  372. Tempted in every way

  373. yet

  374. without

  375. sin.

  376. And it's important

  377. that we are

  378. like this.

  379. That we are

  380. holy

  381. as Christ

  382. is holy.

  383. Again,

  384. the writer of Hebrews

  385. says,

  386. chapter 12

  387. and verse 14,

  388. strive for peace

  389. with everyone

  390. and

  391. for the holiness

  392. without which

  393. no one

  394. will see

  395. the Lord.

  396. To be

  397. pure in heart

  398. means to

  399. fulfill

  400. the greatest

  401. commandment.

  402. Matthew chapter 22

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  403. and verse 37

  404. and following

  405. Jesus says,

  406. having been tested

  407. is the greatest

  408. commandment.

  409. He responds,

  410. you shall love

  411. the Lord your God

  412. with all your heart

  413. and with all your soul

  414. and with all your mind.

  415. This is the greatest

  416. and first commandment

  417. and a second like it

  418. so he expands it beyond

  419. you shall love your neighbor

  420. as

  421. yourself.

  422. So,

  423. to be pure in heart

  424. is to be without

  425. hypocrisy,

  426. without

  427. blemish,

  428. to be like

  429. Christ

  430. in our

  431. devotion

  432. to God.

  433. You shall love

  434. the Lord your God

  435. with all your heart,

  436. with all your soul,

  437. with all

  438. your

  439. mind.

  440. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  441. again,

  442. this is the

  443. quotation on your

  444. bulletin this morning,

  445. said,

  446. to be pure in heart

  447. means we have

  448. an undivided

  449. love which regards

  450. God as our

  451. highest good

  452. and which is

  453. concerned only

  454. about loving

  455. God.

  456. God.

  457. So,

  458. to be pure

  459. in heart

  460. means to be

  461. like Christ.

  462. Beloved,

  463. this is not

  464. something that is

  465. accomplished by

  466. our well-wishing

  467. or by our

  468. effort,

  469. but by God

  470. imputing our

  471. sin to Christ

  472. and by imputing

  473. to us

  474. the righteousness

  475. of Christ.

  476. Martin Luther

  477. called this

  478. the great exchange.

  479. He took

  480. our sin

  481. and gave it

  482. to Jesus

  483. who knew

  484. no sin.

  485. He became

  486. sin on our

  487. behalf and

  488. the wrath of

  489. God was poured

  490. out on him

  491. and his

  492. righteousness,

  493. his perfect

  494. life was

  495. given to

  496. us.

  497. This is called

  498. double

  499. imputation.

  500. You don't have

  501. to know that.

  502. But you have

  503. to know that

  504. there was an

  505. exchange that

  506. happened when

  507. you placed

  508. faith in

  509. Jesus Christ.

  510. That not only

  511. was the debt

  512. of your sin

  513. canceled,

  514. but you were

  515. given righteousness.

  516. It's as if

  517. you fulfilled

  518. the law.

  519. It's as if

  520. you kept

  521. it perfectly

  522. because your

  523. sin was punished

  524. in him and

  525. he kept it

  526. perfectly on

  527. your behalf.

  528. We don't do

  529. this on our

  530. own.

  531. We are

  532. incapable of

  533. doing this

  534. on our

  535. own.

  536. God gifts

  537. us with

  538. faith to

  539. believe in

  540. the all

  541. sufficient purity

  542. of Jesus

  543. Christ and

  544. by that

  545. faith gives

  546. us a

  547. declaration

  548. of pure.

  549. Having been

  550. made pure

  551. in heart,

  552. having been

  553. made positionally

  554. changed from

  555. being unclean,

  556. hypocritical,

  557. we have been

  558. changed to be

  559. pure in heart

  560. and therefore

  561. we act

  562. accordingly.

  563. We act

  564. as we

  565. are.

  566. Look with me

  567. at the framework

  568. of the

  569. Beatitudes.

  570. So if you've

  571. left Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  572. chapter 5,

  573. please go back

  574. to Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  575. chapter 5.

  576. Jesus did

  577. not utter

  578. these

  579. declarations

  580. in random

  581. order.

  582. They each

  583. stand alone,

  584. to be sure,

  585. but they

  586. also work

  587. in harmony

  588. together.

  589. Let me

  590. show you

  591. what I

  592. mean by

  593. this.

  594. And let me

  595. issue a

  596. warning as

  597. I'm about

  598. to do

  599. this too.

  600. We do

  601. have to be

  602. very careful

  603. when we

  604. apply framework

  605. to text

  606. of the

  607. Bible,

  608. lest we

  609. end up

  610. making the

  611. scripture say

  612. what we

  613. are trying

  614. to make

  615. it say

  616. in the

  617. application.

  618. I've read

  619. many applied

  620. frameworks

  621. that you

  622. just go,

  623. I don't

  624. even see

  625. how they

  626. got to

  627. this place,

  628. but often

  629. they're trying

  630. to draw

  631. a connection

  632. to a singular

  633. point,

  634. and that's

  635. why it

  636. gets applied

  637. in that

  638. way.

  639. I think

  640. this is a

  641. very fair

  642. framework.

  643. I think

  644. this is

  645. correct.

  646. I think

  647. this is

  648. why Jesus

  649. spoke them

  650. in this

  651. order.

  652. But we

  653. take my

  654. framework

  655. not as

  656. inspired.

  657. The text

  658. is inspired.

  659. So,

  660. there's your

  661. warning.

  662. So,

  663. first,

  664. let's look at

  665. the first

  666. three Beatitudes.

  667. This is

  668. verses 3,

  669. 4,

  670. and 5.

  671. You see

  672. in these

  673. three a

  674. recognition

  675. of our

  676. great

  677. awareness

  678. of need.

  679. You see

  680. the three

  681. that there

  682. are there.

  683. We see

  684. that we

  685. have a

  686. spiritual

  687. poverty,

  688. nothing to

  689. offer God.

  690. We come

  691. to Him

  692. empty-handed,

  693. simply to

  694. the cross

  695. we cling

  696. to be

  697. found

  698. righteous

  699. in Christ.

  700. We have

  701. no works

  702. that we

  703. can bring

  704. to God

  705. and say,

  706. look at

  707. what I've

  708. done.

  709. Look at

  710. how I've

  711. accomplished.

  712. None of

  713. that will

  714. be of any

  715. credit

  716. before God.

  717. So,

  718. we're

  719. spiritually

  720. impoverished.

  721. We have

  722. great need.

  723. We mourn

  724. over this.

  725. We have a

  726. deep

  727. sin,

  728. and the

  729. sin of

  730. the world

  731. around us.

  732. We flee

  733. to the

  734. cross

  735. impoverished

  736. and mourning

  737. over our

  738. sinfulness.

  739. And,

  740. in meekness,

  741. we recognize

  742. our state.

  743. We have a

  744. humility

  745. that doesn't

  746. seek retribution.

  747. It doesn't

  748. try to

  749. defend our

  750. rights at

  751. all costs.

  752. So,

  753. these three

  754. express this

  755. great awareness

  756. of need.

  757. Now,

  758. the fourth

  759. beatitude,

  760. in verse

  761. six,

  762. we see that

  763. that need

  764. is met.

  765. Blessed are

  766. those who

  767. hunger and

  768. thirst long

  769. for this

  770. thing they

  771. don't have,

  772. this expressed

  773. need in the

  774. first three

  775. beatitudes,

  776. because,

  777. they're

  778. blessed because,

  779. they shall

  780. be satisfied.

  781. So,

  782. they hunger

  783. and thirst

  784. for righteousness,

  785. these blessed,

  786. and they're

  787. filled.

  788. And,

  789. they're filled.

  790. And,

  791. then,

  792. beatitude

  793. five through

  794. seven,

  795. five,

  796. six,

  797. and seven,

  798. found in

  799. verses seven,

  800. eight,

  801. and nine,

  802. is the

  803. overflow

  804. of this

  805. being filled.

  806. The overflow

  807. of this being

  808. filled is that

  809. these people,

  810. myself,

  811. and I hope

  812. you this

  813. morning,

  814. find ourselves

  815. having been

  816. filled,

  817. overflowing

  818. as a

  819. merciful,

  820. pure,

  821. peacemaking

  822. people.

  823. And,

  824. in the final

  825. beatitude,

  826. found in

  827. verses 10

  828. through 12,

  829. we see

  830. the result

  831. of this

  832. lived

  833. righteousness,

  834. this filled

  835. up,

  836. overflowing,

  837. lived righteousness,

  838. this mercy

  839. and purity

  840. and peacemaking

  841. is what?

  842. Persecution.

  843. That we will

  844. be persecuted

  845. for

  846. righteousness.

  847. For righteousness

  848. sake.

  849. So,

  850. I hope you can

  851. see the flow.

  852. I think that

  853. Jesus builds

  854. us to the

  855. fourth beatitude

  856. and the

  857. meeting of

  858. this need

  859. and that

  860. becomes

  861. the watershed,

  862. so to speak,

  863. of the

  864. beatitudes,

  865. right?

  866. And then

  867. the living

  868. that follows

  869. and the

  870. result of

  871. this kind

  872. of living,

  873. right?

  874. So,

  875. we act

  876. as we

  877. are.

  878. so we

  879. do not

  880. say,

  881. oh,

  882. if I

  883. can just

  884. be pure

  885. in heart

  886. and then

  887. labor under

  888. our own

  889. might to

  890. do such

  891. and such

  892. or to

  893. not do

  894. such and

  895. such,

  896. but rather,

  897. having been

  898. made righteous

  899. by the goodness

  900. of God

  901. toward us

  902. in the

  903. person and

  904. work of

  905. Jesus

  906. Christ,

  907. we evidence

  908. our salvation

  909. in the way

  910. that we

  911. live.

  912. we must

  913. be so

  914. careful

  915. in our

  916. understanding

  917. of the

  918. gospel of

  919. Jesus

  920. Christ

  921. for our

  922. sake

  923. and for

  924. the sake

  925. of others.

  926. I have

  927. resolved

  928. as a

  929. pastor

  930. that I'm

  931. going to

  932. spend my

  933. life

  934. answering

  935. three

  936. questions

  937. again

  938. and again

  939. and again

  940. and it

  941. is an

  942. honor to

  943. do so.

  944. You would

  945. think some

  946. of these

  947. questions we

  948. could move

  949. beyond,

  950. but I don't

  951. think we're

  952. ever going

  953. to do so

  954. in our

  955. age.

  956. And those

  957. three questions

  958. are,

  959. what is

  960. the

  961. Bible?

  962. It's the

  963. inerrant,

  964. all-powerful,

  965. sufficient,

  966. authoritative

  967. word of

  968. God.

  969. I keep

  970. drawing people

  971. back to

  972. that great

  973. truth in

  974. this age

  975. of skepticism

  976. and opinion

  977. nation.

  978. Secondly,

  979. what is

  980. the gospel?

  981. What is

  982. the gospel?

  983. I'm going

  984. to talk

  985. more about

  986. that in

  987. a second.

  988. And third,

  989. what is

  990. the church?

  991. Helping

  992. people to

  993. come to

  994. understand

  995. how it

  996. is that

  997. God's

  998. people are

  999. meant to

  1000. gather

  1001. and to

  1002. go.

  1003. But in

  1004. answering the

  1005. question,

  1006. what is the

  1007. gospel?

  1008. In an age

  1009. of decisionism,

  1010. where to be

  1011. known by

  1012. Christ,

  1013. it would be

  1014. taught to you

  1015. that all you

  1016. must do is

  1017. raise your

  1018. hand,

  1019. no one's

  1020. looking around,

  1021. every head

  1022. bowed,

  1023. every eye

  1024. closed.

  1025. I could fall

  1026. right into it.

  1027. We walk out

  1028. here,

  1029. we take a

  1030. little stroll,

  1031. I see you

  1032. brother,

  1033. I see that

  1034. hand going

  1035. up,

  1036. right?

  1037. We press,

  1038. we emotionally

  1039. manipulate,

  1040. we push at

  1041. people,

  1042. and then,

  1043. once they

  1044. filled out a

  1045. card,

  1046. we say,

  1047. there is

  1048. your

  1049. assurance,

  1050. right?

  1051. It's a

  1052. date,

  1053. and it's

  1054. a time.

  1055. Many of

  1056. you have

  1057. heard me

  1058. say before,

  1059. I grew up

  1060. in a

  1061. church under

  1062. a pastor

  1063. who said,

  1064. if you

  1065. ever doubt

  1066. your salvation,

  1067. turn to

  1068. the front of

  1069. your Bible

  1070. where you

  1071. wrote down

  1072. the date

  1073. you walked

  1074. the aisle,

  1075. and meditate

  1076. on that

  1077. date.

  1078. And this

  1079. type of

  1080. teaching

  1081. damns people

  1082. to hell.

  1083. To say,

  1084. merely the

  1085. act of

  1086. walking,

  1087. now praise

  1088. the Lord,

  1089. he has

  1090. saved people

  1091. in invitations.

  1092. Many of

  1093. you may

  1094. have responded

  1095. to an

  1096. invitation

  1097. like that,

  1098. and God

  1099. saved you.

  1100. It was not

  1101. the invitation

  1102. that saved

  1103. you.

  1104. It was a

  1105. good and

  1106. gracious God

  1107. who changed

  1108. your heart

  1109. and caused

  1110. you to

  1111. believe in

  1112. him.

  1113. So the

  1114. scripture tells

  1115. us,

  1116. if you

  1117. doubt your

  1118. salvation,

  1119. go and

  1120. look at

  1121. what Christians

  1122. look like.

  1123. What do

  1124. citizens of

  1125. the kingdom

  1126. of heaven

  1127. do?

  1128. Find

  1129. yourself in

  1130. the Beatitudes.

  1131. Could you

  1132. say of

  1133. yourself,

  1134. yes,

  1135. this is

  1136. me,

  1137. impoverished

  1138. of spirit,

  1139. mourning

  1140. over my

  1141. sin,

  1142. meek,

  1143. not seeking

  1144. out retribution,

  1145. hungering and

  1146. thirsting for

  1147. righteousness.

  1148. God is

  1149. working in

  1150. me,

  1151. mercy and

  1152. purity and

  1153. peacemaking.

  1154. I'm

  1155. experiencing the

  1156. persecution,

  1157. the push,

  1158. back from

  1159. the world

  1160. for living

  1161. in this

  1162. way.

  1163. If you

  1164. don't find

  1165. yourself in

  1166. this,

  1167. you've

  1168. either wandered

  1169. from the

  1170. truth or

  1171. you've never

  1172. believed it

  1173. to begin

  1174. with.

  1175. In an

  1176. age of

  1177. decision,

  1178. we have to

  1179. be so

  1180. accurate,

  1181. so precise,

  1182. an age of

  1183. easy

  1184. believism that

  1185. expects nothing

  1186. of you,

  1187. that would

  1188. teach you that

  1189. Jesus could be

  1190. your savior,

  1191. but he doesn't

  1192. have to be

  1193. your lord.

  1194. This is

  1195. false,

  1196. it is

  1197. heretical to

  1198. say such

  1199. a thing.

  1200. If Jesus is

  1201. your savior,

  1202. he is

  1203. your lord.

  1204. If you

  1205. have beheld

  1206. the glory

  1207. of God

  1208. in the

  1209. face of

  1210. Jesus

  1211. Christ,

  1212. you will

  1213. have no

  1214. option but

  1215. to say,

  1216. yes,

  1217. sir.

  1218. We must

  1219. be those

  1220. who are a

  1221. beacon of

  1222. the truth

  1223. for the

  1224. sake of

  1225. souls.

  1226. Everybody

  1227. you meet

  1228. will live

  1229. forever.

  1230. chapter 1

  1231. verse 5

  1232. to 10.

  1233. The apostle

  1234. John addresses

  1235. this.

  1236. This is one

  1237. of those

  1238. places,

  1239. right?

  1240. What do

  1241. we do

  1242. when someone

  1243. isn't confident

  1244. of their

  1245. faith?

  1246. If you find

  1247. yourself in

  1248. that place,

  1249. the whole

  1250. book of

  1251. 1 John

  1252. is about

  1253. this.

  1254. And not

  1255. once does

  1256. he say,

  1257. turn to

  1258. the front

  1259. of your

  1260. Bible

  1261. and look

  1262. at a

  1263. date.

  1264. He says,

  1265. rather,

  1266. verse 5

  1267. and following,

  1268. this is the

  1269. message we

  1270. have heard

  1271. from him

  1272. and proclaim

  1273. to you,

  1274. that God

  1275. is light

  1276. and in

  1277. him is

  1278. no darkness

  1279. at all.

  1280. Okay,

  1281. so God

  1282. is perfectly

  1283. holy.

  1284. In him

  1285. is light

  1286. and in

  1287. him is

  1288. no darkness

  1289. at all.

  1290. If we

  1291. say we

  1292. have fellowship

  1293. with him

  1294. while we

  1295. walk in

  1296. darkness,

  1297. so while

  1298. our life

  1299. is characterized

  1300. by sinfulness,

  1301. right?

  1302. Not that we

  1303. sin at

  1304. times,

  1305. beloved,

  1306. we all

  1307. do this,

  1308. but while

  1309. we walk

  1310. in it,

  1311. it is

  1312. who we

  1313. are.

  1314. Verse 6

  1315. goes on

  1316. to say,

  1317. we lie

  1318. and do

  1319. not practice

  1320. the truth.

  1321. But if we

  1322. say we

  1323. walk in

  1324. the light,

  1325. our lives

  1326. are characterized

  1327. by walking

  1328. in the light,

  1329. as he is

  1330. in the light,

  1331. we have

  1332. fellowship

  1333. with one

  1334. another,

  1335. and the

  1336. blood of

  1337. Jesus,

  1338. his son,

  1339. cleanses

  1340. us from

  1341. all sin.

  1342. Now,

  1343. if you

  1344. are objecting

  1345. to anything

  1346. I'm saying

  1347. right now,

  1348. at this point

  1349. you might

  1350. go,

  1351. but wait,

  1352. none of us

  1353. are perfect,

  1354. how dare

  1355. anybody say

  1356. they're walking

  1357. in the light?

  1358. John does

  1359. the same

  1360. thing,

  1361. so here

  1362. we go.

  1363. He says,

  1364. if we

  1365. say we

  1366. have no

  1367. sin,

  1368. so don't

  1369. you dare,

  1370. right?

  1371. If we

  1372. say we

  1373. have no

  1374. sin,

  1375. we deceive

  1376. ourselves

  1377. and the

  1378. truth is

  1379. not in

  1380. us.

  1381. So he

  1382. punctuates,

  1383. walking in

  1384. the light

  1385. doesn't

  1386. mean we're

  1387. sinless,

  1388. right?

  1389. It means

  1390. we're

  1391. characterized

  1392. by pursuing

  1393. truth,

  1394. characterized

  1395. by mercy

  1396. and purity

  1397. of heart

  1398. and peacemaking,

  1399. right?

  1400. Because we're

  1401. liars if we

  1402. say we

  1403. have no

  1404. sin.

  1405. But then

  1406. verse 9

  1407. and 10,

  1408. if we

  1409. confess our

  1410. sins,

  1411. he's faithful

  1412. and just

  1413. to forgive

  1414. us our

  1415. sins and

  1416. to cleanse

  1417. us from

  1418. all unrighteousness.

  1419. We continue

  1420. to persist

  1421. in this

  1422. walking in

  1423. the light,

  1424. this pursuing

  1425. of holiness.

  1426. If we say

  1427. we have

  1428. not sinned,

  1429. we make

  1430. him a

  1431. liar and

  1432. his word

  1433. is not

  1434. in us.

  1435. So we

  1436. want to

  1437. look at

  1438. a text

  1439. like this.

  1440. We want

  1441. to say,

  1442. oh,

  1443. do I

  1444. walk in

  1445. darkness

  1446. or do I

  1447. walk in

  1448. light?

  1449. We want

  1450. to go to

  1451. other places

  1452. in the

  1453. scripture

  1454. that help

  1455. us to

  1456. understand

  1457. what

  1458. walking

  1459. in the

  1460. light

  1461. looks like.

  1462. What are

  1463. the deeds

  1464. of the

  1465. flesh?

  1466. And what

  1467. are the

  1468. deeds

  1469. of the

  1470. spirit?

  1471. Am I

  1472. characterized

  1473. by one

  1474. or the

  1475. other?

  1476. And if

  1477. we find

  1478. that we're

  1479. characterized

  1480. by those

  1481. like those

  1482. who walk

  1483. in darkness,

  1484. then repent.

  1485. Repent and

  1486. turn to

  1487. faith in

  1488. Jesus Christ.

  1489. Your

  1490. great effort,

  1491. your highest

  1492. effort at

  1493. righteousness

  1494. is going to

  1495. fall miserably

  1496. short of

  1497. God's standard

  1498. of righteousness.

  1499. It will only

  1500. be found by

  1501. having Jesus'

  1502. righteousness

  1503. given to

  1504. you,

  1505. imputed

  1506. to you.

  1507. Look to

  1508. Christ.

  1509. Jesus

  1510. says that

  1511. it is

  1512. the

  1513. pure

  1514. in

  1515. heart

  1516. that

  1517. are

  1518. blessed.

  1519. Why are

  1520. the

  1521. pure

  1522. in

  1523. heart

  1524. declared

  1525. blessed?

  1526. Because

  1527. they

  1528. shall

  1529. see

  1530. God.

  1531. This

  1532. is so

  1533. good.

  1534. This

  1535. is so

  1536. good.

  1537. They

  1538. shall

  1539. see

  1540. God.

  1541. This

  1542. statement

  1543. by

  1544. Jesus

  1545. would

  1546. have

  1547. sent

  1548. his

  1549. Jewish

  1550. audience's

  1551. minds

  1552. skipping

  1553. off

  1554. to

  1555. Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  1556. chapter

  1557. 33.

  1558. Your

  1559. mind

  1560. might

  1561. not

  1562. have

  1563. done

  1564. that

  1565. and

  1566. that's

  1567. okay.

  1568. But

  1569. you

  1570. can

  1571. flip

  1572. right

  1573. now

  1574. with

  1575. me

  1576. to

  1577. Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  1578. chapter

  1579. 33

  1580. and

  1581. verse

  1582. 18.

  1583. This

  1584. is

  1585. right

  1586. where

  1587. their

  1588. minds

  1589. would

  1590. have

  1591. gone.

  1592. See

  1593. God

  1594. really?

  1595. That's

  1596. what they

  1597. would

  1598. have

  1599. said

  1600. in

  1601. my

  1602. imagination.

  1603. So

  1604. in

  1605. Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  1606. chapter

  1607. 33

  1608. Israel's

  1609. encamped

  1610. at

  1611. Mount

  1612. Sinai.

  1613. Previously

  1614. Moses

  1615. has

  1616. gone

  1617. up

  1618. on

  1619. the

  1620. mountain

  1621. and

  1622. received

  1623. the

  1624. Ten

  1625. Commandments.

  1626. He's

  1627. come

  1628. back

  1629. down

  1630. from

  1631. the

  1632. mountain.

  1633. He's

  1634. discovered

  1635. God's

  1636. people

  1637. already

  1638. have

  1639. forsaken

  1640. him,

  1641. have

  1642. created

  1643. a

  1644. golden

  1645. calf

  1646. that

  1647. according

  1648. to

  1649. Aaron

  1650. magically

  1651. jumped

  1652. out

  1653. of

  1654. the

  1655. fire.

  1656. Moses

  1657. gets

  1658. furious,

  1659. breaks

  1660. the

  1661. stones

  1662. of

  1663. tablet,

  1664. goes

  1665. back

  1666. up

  1667. onto

  1668. the

  1669. mountain.

  1670. God

  1671. says,

  1672. I'm

  1673. done

  1674. with

  1675. you

  1676. God

  1677. agrees

  1678. that

  1679. he'll

  1680. go

  1681. with

  1682. them.

  1683. First

  1684. he says

  1685. he'll

  1686. go

  1687. with

  1688. Moses

  1689. and

  1690. Moses

  1691. says,

  1692. oh,

  1693. but you

  1694. must

  1695. go

  1696. with

  1697. us.

  1698. He

  1699. agrees

  1700. that

  1701. he'll

  1702. do

  1703. this

  1704. thing.

  1705. So

  1706. it's

  1707. this

  1708. amazing

  1709. act

  1710. of

  1711. mercy

  1712. on

  1713. God's

  1714. part.

  1715. So

  1716. that's

  1717. my

  1718. super

  1719. quick

  1720. summary

  1721. of

  1722. a

  1723. couple

  1724. of

  1725. chapters

  1726. that

  1727. leads

  1728. Moses

  1729. to

  1730. ask

  1731. this

  1732. astounding

  1733. thing.

  1734. It's

  1735. huge.

  1736. Early

  1737. readers

  1738. of this

  1739. would have

  1740. gone,

  1741. what?

  1742. You

  1743. asked

  1744. God,

  1745. what?

  1746. Moses

  1747. said,

  1748. verse

  1749. 18,

  1750. please,

  1751. he knows

  1752. it's a

  1753. big ask,

  1754. please show

  1755. me your

  1756. glory,

  1757. right?

  1758. He's

  1759. asking for

  1760. God to

  1761. show him

  1762. very

  1763. self,

  1764. his being,

  1765. who he

  1766. is.

  1767. And this

  1768. is God's

  1769. response to

  1770. him.

  1771. I will

  1772. make all

  1773. my goodness

  1774. pass before

  1775. you and

  1776. will proclaim

  1777. before you

  1778. my name,

  1779. the Lord,

  1780. and I

  1781. will be

  1782. gracious

  1783. to

  1784. whom I

  1785. will

  1786. be

  1787. gracious

  1788. and I

  1789. will

  1790. show

  1791. mercy

  1792. on whom

  1793. I

  1794. will

  1795. show

  1796. mercy.

  1797. But

  1798. he

  1799. said,

  1800. God

  1801. said,

  1802. you

  1803. cannot

  1804. see

  1805. my

  1806. face

  1807. for

  1808. man

  1809. shall

  1810. not

  1811. see

  1812. me

  1813. and

  1814. live.

  1815. And

  1816. behold,

  1817. there is

  1818. a place

  1819. by me

  1820. where you

  1821. shall

  1822. stand

  1823. on the

  1824. rock.

  1825. And

  1826. while

  1827. my

  1828. glory

  1829. passes

  1830. by,

  1831. I

  1832. will

  1833. put

  1834. you

  1835. in

  1836. a

  1837. cleft

  1838. of the

  1839. rock.

  1840. That's

  1841. a little

  1842. alcove

  1843. of the

  1844. rock.

  1845. And

  1846. I

  1847. will

  1848. cover

  1849. you

  1850. with

  1851. my

  1852. hand

  1853. until

  1854. I

  1855. have

  1856. passed

  1857. by.

  1858. Then

  1859. I

  1860. will

  1861. take

  1862. away

  1863. my

  1864. hand

  1865. and

  1866. you

  1867. shall

  1868. see

  1869. my

  1870. back.

  1871. But

  1872. my

  1873. face

  1874. shall

  1875. not

  1876. be

  1877. seen.

  1878. So

  1879. God

  1880. says,

  1881. I

  1882. will

  1883. grant

  1884. you

  1885. your

  1886. request,

  1887. but

  1888. in

  1889. a

  1890. way

  1891. that

  1892. won't

  1893. kill

  1894. you.

  1895. I'm

  1896. just

  1897. going

  1898. to

  1899. let

  1900. you

  1901. see

  1902. me

  1903. as

  1904. I

  1905. pass

  1906. by.

  1907. All

  1908. my

  1909. goodness

  1910. !

  1911. And

  1912. beloved,

  1913. we

  1914. come

  1915. to

  1916. the

  1917. New

  1918. Testament,

  1919. to

  1920. the

  1921. New

  1922. Covenant,

  1923. and we

  1924. read in

  1925. John 1

  1926. and

  1927. verse 14,

  1928. And the

  1929. word became

  1930. flesh and

  1931. dwelt among

  1932. us,

  1933. and we

  1934. have seen

  1935. his glory,

  1936. glory as

  1937. of the

  1938. only Son

  1939. from the

  1940. Father,

  1941. full of

  1942. grace and

  1943. truth.

  1944. And then

  1945. in verse

  1946. 18,

  1947. no one

  1948. has ever

  1949. seen

  1950. God,

  1951. the only

  1952. God,

  1953. who is at

  1954. the Father's

  1955. side.

  1956. He,

  1957. being

  1958. Jesus,

  1959. has made

  1960. Him,

  1961. being

  1962. God,

  1963. known.

  1964. So we

  1965. behold

  1966. the glory

  1967. of God

  1968. as we

  1969. look

  1970. at

  1971. Christ

  1972. in a

  1973. sense.

  1974. Many of

  1975. you are

  1976. familiar with

  1977. the hymn

  1978. Rock of

  1979. Ages,

  1980. written by

  1981. the 18th

  1982. century

  1983. hymnist

  1984. Augustus

  1985. Toplady,

  1986. who's one

  1987. of my,

  1988. he's got

  1989. the greatest

  1990. name,

  1991. anyway,

  1992. of

  1993. hymn

  1994. writers,

  1995. where he

  1996. wrote this,

  1997. Rock of

  1998. Ages,

  1999. cleft

  2000. for me,

  2001. let me

  2002. hide

  2003. myself

  2004. in thee,

  2005. he's talking

  2006. about Jesus,

  2007. right,

  2008. let me be

  2009. in your,

  2010. clothed in

  2011. you,

  2012. your

  2013. righteousness,

  2014. right,

  2015. let the

  2016. water and

  2017. the blood

  2018. from thy

  2019. wounded

  2020. side,

  2021. which

  2022. flowed,

  2023. be of

  2024. sin,

  2025. the double

  2026. cure,

  2027. double

  2028. imputation,

  2029. that's what

  2030. he's talking

  2031. about,

  2032. be of

  2033. sin,

  2034. the double

  2035. cure,

  2036. save

  2037. from wrath

  2038. and make

  2039. me

  2040. pure,

  2041. incredible,

  2042. it's an

  2043. astounding

  2044. truth,

  2045. that we

  2046. get a

  2047. glimpse

  2048. of God

  2049. himself

  2050. and all

  2051. his glory

  2052. as we

  2053. behold

  2054. Christ,

  2055. as with

  2056. all of the

  2057. blessed

  2058. declarations,

  2059. there is

  2060. an element

  2061. of now

  2062. and not

  2063. yet,

  2064. now

  2065. and

  2066. not

  2067. yet,

  2068. Paul writes

  2069. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 13:12

  2070. chapter 13

  2071. verse 12,

  2072. for now we

  2073. see in a

  2074. mirror

  2075. dimly,

  2076. but then

  2077. face to

  2078. face,

  2079. now I

  2080. know in

  2081. part,

  2082. then I

  2083. shall know

  2084. fully,

  2085. even as

  2086. I have

  2087. been fully

  2088. known,

  2089. so I'm

  2090. believing,

  2091. right,

  2092. having been

  2093. given a

  2094. glimpse of

  2095. the glory

  2096. of God

  2097. in Jesus

  2098. Christ,

  2099. that we'll

  2100. get a

  2101. greater

  2102. glimpse of

  2103. that,

  2104. that we

  2105. have

  2106. seen

  2107. God

  2108. now,

  2109. but we'll

  2110. more fully

  2111. see him

  2112. then.

  2113. The

  2114. apostle

  2115. John,

  2116. again in

  2117. Revelation

    Revelation 22:3

  2118. chapter 22,

  2119. verses 3 and

  2120. 4,

  2121. writes,

  2122. no longer

  2123. will there

  2124. be anything

  2125. accursed,

  2126. but the throne

  2127. of God

  2128. and of the

  2129. Lamb will be

  2130. in it,

  2131. and his

  2132. servants

  2133. will worship

  2134. him,

  2135. they will

  2136. see his

  2137. face,

  2138. and his

  2139. name will

  2140. be on

  2141. their foreheads.

  2142. It is an

  2143. incredible thing

  2144. to behold

  2145. God in

  2146. knowing and

  2147. being known

  2148. by Jesus

  2149. Christ,

  2150. and it

  2151. will be a

  2152. further

  2153. astounding

  2154. thing to

  2155. behold him

  2156. more fully

  2157. on the

  2158. magnificent

  2159. day when

  2160. we are

  2161. glorified

  2162. with him.

  2163. I hope

  2164. that you'll

  2165. be counted

  2166. in that

  2167. number.

  2168. If you

  2169. don't think

  2170. you will,

  2171. turn to

  2172. God by

  2173. faith in

  2174. Christ this

  2175. morning.

  2176. Beloved,

  2177. because those

  2178. who are

  2179. pure in

  2180. heart will

  2181. see God,

  2182. we have

  2183. great hope

  2184. for today,

  2185. and we

  2186. have great

  2187. hope for

  2188. forever.

  2189. We find

  2190. in this

  2191. utterance

  2192. of our

  2193. Lord great

  2194. reason to

  2195. rejoice in

  2196. his gracious

  2197. work on

  2198. our behalf.

  2199. There's our

  2200. application,

  2201. right?

  2202. At least part

  2203. of it for

  2204. it this

  2205. morning.

  2206. Have a

  2207. great hope.

  2208. Rejoice in

  2209. the goodness

  2210. of God to

  2211. you in

  2212. Christ.

  2213. And we

  2214. also find

  2215. great reason

  2216. to pursue

  2217. purity,

  2218. right?

  2219. To show

  2220. ourselves to

  2221. be in

  2222. the faith,

  2223. to press

  2224. on in

  2225. holiness,

  2226. to find a

  2227. confidence that

  2228. God is at work

  2229. within us for

  2230. the praise of

  2231. his name to

  2232. the ends

  2233. of the

  2234. earth.

  2235. I want

  2236. to close

  2237. with a

  2238. little bit

  2239. of a

  2240. hymn by

  2241. another

  2242. famous

  2243. 18th

  2244. century

  2245. hymn writer

  2246. by the

  2247. name of

  2248. Fanny

  2249. Crosby.

  2250. The song

  2251. is called

  2252. My Savior

  2253. First of

  2254. All.

  2255. I don't

  2256. think this

  2257. one's familiar

  2258. to you.

  2259. Please tell

  2260. me later

  2261. if it is.

  2262. I had

  2263. never heard

  2264. of it

  2265. before.

  2266. She wrote

  2267. this,

  2268. When my

  2269. life work

  2270. is ended

  2271. and I

  2272. cross the

  2273. swelling

  2274. tide,

  2275. when the

  2276. bright and

  2277. glorious

  2278. morning I

  2279. shall see,

  2280. I shall

  2281. know my

  2282. Redeemer when

  2283. I reach the

  2284. other side,

  2285. and his

  2286. smile will

  2287. be the

  2288. first to

  2289. welcome me.

  2290. Through the

  2291. gates of the

  2292. city in a

  2293. robe of

  2294. spotless

  2295. white,

  2296. he will

  2297. lead me

  2298. where no

  2299. tears will

  2300. ever fall.

  2301. In the

  2302. glad songs

  2303. of ages I

  2304. shall mingle

  2305. with the

  2306. delight,

  2307. but I

  2308. long to

  2309. meet my

  2310. Savior first

  2311. of all.

  2312. Blessed are

  2313. those who

  2314. are pure in

  2315. heart, for

  2316. they shall

  2317. see God.

  2318. Let's pray

  2319. together.
