  1. I'm going to begin by saying, if you don't have a copy of God's Word with you this evening, there's no shame in that.

  2. In fact, people were asking me even this week, what exactly is the Good Friday gathering going to look like?

  3. And I would say, I don't know. I'm not sure yet exactly what we're going to do.

  4. I would tell those people that I will be preaching, but they may not have known to pass that information on to you.

  5. And so we want you to have one if you would like to have one.

  6. And so if you don't have a copy of God's Word with you, again, there's no shame in this, and you'd like one,

  7. if you'll slip your hands up. We've got Matt and Tyler around the room. They can get one to you.

  8. You can also be quick on the draw with your phones and pull open something.

  9. Okay, nobody. Okay. All right. Very good, then.

  10. I'm going to assume that you're ready to go, and we're going to get into a text together.

  11. As we gather this evening to consider the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross of Golgotha,

  12. I would like for us to consider some of Jesus' final words as He suffered on our behalf

  13. and reflect upon what may have been some of His final thoughts as He gave His life for the sake of ours.

  14. To do so, please turn with me in your copy of God's Word to Psalm 22.

  15. Psalm 22.

  16. This psalm serves as a divine commentary on much of what Jesus uttered on the cross,

  17. as we will see that three of His statements come from this psalm.

  18. Because Jesus cites this psalm so prevalently,

  19. I believe that it is safe to assume that He was pondering this psalm as He suffered.

  20. It may not have been the only text of Scripture that He meditated upon,

  21. but it was surely one of them.

  22. It may well have been the dominant one,

  23. and therefore can grant us some level of insight into His thoughts.

  24. The author of this psalm is King David,

  25. and no events of his life match the description found here,

  26. as many of his psalms do.

  27. You could say, oh, we know when David wrote this particular psalm,

  28. the trouble that he was experiencing at this time,

  29. but not in this case.

  30. So it is widely agreed that this psalm is prophetic,

  31. that David was speaking of the suffering of Jesus.

  32. In that, it alludes to five different incidents

  33. that occurred in the process of Jesus being tried and crucified.

  34. We also know that Peter, the apostle,

  35. refers to David as a prophet in Acts 2, verse 30.

    Acts 2:30

  36. There he's referencing a different psalm,

  37. but he calls there David the prophet.

  38. So, as we take some time this evening

  39. to consider some of Jesus' final words,

  40. and most likely some of His final thoughts,

  41. I want to invite you to have your heart warmed

  42. by the loving kindness of God to us

  43. in the death of Jesus Christ.

  44. Before I read Psalm 22,

  45. as is my habit,

  46. I want to remind you, beloved,

  47. this is God's Word to us.

  48. It was written for His glory

  49. and for our good,

  50. and we would all do well to listen to it

  51. in order to believe its promises

  52. and obey its commands.

  53. Psalm 22, beginning in verse 1.

  54. My God, my God,

  55. why have you forsaken me?

  56. Why are you so far from saving me

  57. from the words of my groaning?

  58. Oh, my God, I cry by day,

  59. but you do not answer,

  60. and by night,

  61. but I find no rest.

  62. Yet, you are holy,

  63. enthroned on the praises of Israel.

  64. In you our fathers trusted.

  65. They trusted,

  66. and you delivered them.

  67. To you they cried

  68. and were rescued.

  69. In you they trusted

  70. and were not put to shame.

  71. But I am a worm

  72. and not a man.

  73. Scorned by mankind

  74. and despised by the people.

  75. All who see me mock me.

  76. They make mouths at me.

  77. They wag their heads.

  78. He trusts in the Lord.

  79. Let Him deliver him.

  80. Let Him rescue him.

  81. For He delights in him.

  82. Yet you are He

  83. who took me from the womb.

  84. You made me trust you

  85. at my mother's breasts.

  86. On you was I cast from my birth

  87. and from my mother's womb.

  88. You have been my God.

  89. Be not far from me

  90. for trouble is near

  91. and there is none to help.

  92. Many bulls encompass me.

  93. Strong bulls of bashan surround me.

  94. They open wide their mouths at me

  95. like a ravening and roaring lion.

  96. I am poured out like water

  97. and all my bones are out of joint.

  98. My heart is like wax.

  99. It is melted within my breast.

  100. My strength is dried up like a pot shirt

  101. and my tongue sticks to my jaws.

  102. You lay me in the dust of death.

  103. For dogs encompass me.

  104. A company of evildoers encircles me.

  105. They have pierced my hands and feet.

  106. I can count all my bones.

  107. They stare and gloat over me.

  108. They divide my garments among them

  109. and for my clothing they cast lots.

  110. But you, O Lord, do not be far off.

  111. O you, my help, come quickly to my aid.

  112. Deliver my soul from the sword,

  113. my precious life from the power of the dog.

  114. Save me from the mouth of the lion.

  115. You have rescued me from the horns

  116. of the wild oxen.

  117. I will tell of your name to my brothers.

  118. In the midst of the congregation,

  119. I will praise you.

  120. You who fear the Lord, praise Him.

  121. All you offspring of Jacob, glorify Him

  122. and stand in awe of Him,

  123. all you offspring of Israel.

  124. For He has not despised or abhorred

  125. the affliction of the afflicted.

  126. And He has not hidden His face from Him,

  127. but has heard when He cried to Him.

  128. From you comes my praise in the great congregation.

  129. My vows I will perform before those who fear Him.

  130. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied.

  131. Those who seek Him shall praise the Lord.

  132. May your hearts live forever.

  133. All the ends of the earth shall remember

  134. and turn to the Lord,

  135. and all the families of the nations

  136. shall worship before you.

  137. For kingship belongs to the Lord,

  138. and He rules over the nations.

  139. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship.

  140. Before Him shall bow all who go down to the dust,

  141. even the one who could not keep Himself alive.

  142. Posterity shall serve Him.

  143. It shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation.

  144. They shall come and proclaim His righteousness

  145. to a people yet unborn,

  146. that He has done it.

  147. So, first, let's look at the five incidents

  148. that occurred in the process of Jesus being tried

  149. and crucified that this psalm alludes to.

  150. I hope that you're familiar enough

  151. with the New Testament text

  152. that speaks of these things,

  153. the Gospel accounts,

  154. that you were picking up some hints of them

  155. as you moved throughout it.

  156. Now, those of you who are used to me

  157. working verse by verse through a text,

  158. beginning at verse 1 and working my way down,

  159. I'm not going to do that tonight.

  160. We're going to take it in fragments,

  161. although I will reference every bit of Psalm 22.

  162. In fact, for a test of that,

  163. I wrote down 1 through 31

  164. and checked them off

  165. as I was sure that I referenced it in my notes.

  166. But it'll come in a different order

  167. than 1 through 31

  168. because it's my hope for our thinking

  169. to move from those matters

  170. which aren't unimportant,

  171. but they're less important to those matters

  172. that are more important for us this evening.

  173. So, let's look at these five incidents

  174. that occurred.

  175. Number one,

  176. the dividing of Jesus' garments

  177. and the casting of lots.

  178. We can read in John 19,

    John 19:23

  179. verse 23 and 24,

  180. when the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  181. they took His garments

  182. and divided them into four parts,

  183. one part for each soldier,

  184. also His tunic.

  185. But the tunic was seamless,

  186. woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  187. So they said to one another,

  188. let us not tear it,

  189. but cast lots for it

  190. to see whose it shall be.

  191. This was to fill the Scripture

  192. which says,

  193. and here citing directly,

  194. John does Psalm 22 and verse 18.

  195. They divided my garments among them

  196. and for my clothing,

  197. they cast lots.

  198. So the soldiers did these things.

  199. So first,

  200. the dividing of Jesus' garments

  201. and the casting of lots

  202. we find in Psalm 22.

  203. Secondly,

  204. the piercing of Jesus' hands and feet

  205. and His severe beating.

  206. Now, we only find out

  207. about the piercing of Jesus' hands and feet

  208. because of doubting Thomas.

  209. Now, it was understood

  210. that this is the way people were crucified.

  211. Big nails put through their wrists

  212. and through their feet.

  213. But we don't know for sure

  214. this was the case with Christ

  215. except John's record again,

  216. chapter 20, verse 24,

  217. and following,

  218. where John records for us,

  219. now Thomas, one of the twelve,

  220. called the twin,

  221. was not with them when Jesus came.

  222. So the other disciples told Him,

  223. We have seen the Lord,

  224. but He said to them,

  225. Unless I see in His hands

  226. the mark of the nails

  227. and place my finger

  228. into the mark of the nails

  229. and place my hand into His side,

  230. I will never believe.

  231. Eight days later,

  232. His disciples were inside again

  233. and Thomas was with them.

  234. Although the doors were locked,

  235. Jesus came and stood among them

  236. and said,

  237. Peace be with you.

  238. Then He said to Thomas,

  239. Put your finger here

  240. and see my hands

  241. and put out your hand

  242. and place it in my side.

  243. Do not disbelieve,

  244. but believe.

  245. And Thomas answered Him,

  246. My Lord and my God.

  247. So we see, right,

  248. that Jesus' hands

  249. were nailed through

  250. in His feet.

  251. We know that Jesus

  252. was severely beaten

  253. from texts like Matthew 27

  254. and the prophet Isaiah

  255. wrote in Isaiah 52 and verse 14,

  256. As many were astonished at you,

  257. His appearance was so marred

  258. beyond human semblance

  259. and His form beyond that

  260. of the children of mankind.

  261. And again, we find this

  262. in Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:16

  263. verse 16 and 17.

  264. The psalmist says,

  265. For dogs encompass me,

  266. a company of evil doers

  267. encircles me.

  268. They have pierced my hands

  269. and feet.

  270. I can count all my bones.

  271. The flesh is ripped off my body.

  272. They stare and gloat over me.

  273. Third, the mocking of the soldiers.

  274. In Mark 15, verse 16 and following,

    Mark 15:16

  275. we read,

  276. And the soldiers led Him away

  277. inside the palace.

  278. That is the governor's headquarters.

  279. And they called together

  280. the whole battalion.

  281. And they clothed Him

  282. in a purple cloak.

  283. And twisting together

  284. a crown of thorns,

  285. they put it on Him.

  286. And they began to salute Him.

  287. Hail, King of the Jews!

  288. And they were striking His head

  289. with a reed

  290. and spitting on Him

  291. and kneeling down

  292. in homage to Him.

  293. When they had mocked Him,

  294. they stripped Him

  295. of the purple cloak

  296. and put His own clothes on Him.

  297. And they led Him out

  298. to crucify Him.

  299. And then Luke adds

  300. in Luke 22,

    Luke 22:63

  301. verse 63 and following,

  302. Now the men

  303. who were holding Jesus in custody

  304. were mocking Him

  305. as they beat Him.

  306. They also blindfolded Him

  307. and kept asking Him,

  308. Prophesy!

  309. Who is it that struck you?

  310. And they said many other things

  311. against Him,

  312. blaspheming Him.

  313. And so,

  314. Jesus became a mockery,

  315. an object of derision

  316. and sport

  317. for the Roman battalion.

  318. The Creator of all the universe

  319. became a laughingstock

  320. to those whom He created.

  321. And we see this

  322. in Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:6

  323. verses 6 and 7.

  324. A psalmist wrote,

  325. But I am a worm

  326. and not a man,

  327. scorned by mankind

  328. and despised

  329. by the people.

  330. All who see me

  331. mock me.

  332. They make mouths at me.

  333. They wag their heads.

  334. Fourth, we see

  335. the mocking of the bystanders

  336. and religious leaders.

  337. So not just the Roman guard.

  338. Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:39

  339. verse 39 says,

  340. And those who passed by

  341. derided Him,

  342. wagging their heads,

  343. which was a sign

  344. of that disapproval.

  345. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:7

  346. verse 7 and 8,

  347. All those who see me

  348. mock me.

  349. That's fascinating.

  350. Let's go back again.

  351. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:7

  352. verse 7 and 8.

  353. Without the polka music

  354. this time, please.

  355. All who see me

  356. mock me.

  357. They make mouths at me.

  358. They wag their heads.

  359. He trusts in the Lord.

  360. This is the speaking

  361. of derision.

  362. Let Him deliver him.

  363. Let Him rescue him,

  364. for He delights in him.

  365. In Luke 23,

    Luke 23:35

  366. verse 35 and following,

  367. Luke records,

  368. And the people stood by.

  369. So everyone who's passing by,

  370. according to Matthew,

  371. is mocking Jesus.

  372. Here Luke says,

  373. And the people stood by,

  374. watching,

  375. but the rulers

  376. scoffed at Him,

  377. saying,

  378. He saved others.

  379. Let Him save Himself.

  380. If He is the Christ of God,

  381. His chosen one.

  382. The soldiers also mocked Him,

  383. coming up and offering Him

  384. sour wine and saying,

  385. If you are the King of the Jews,

  386. save yourself.

  387. There was also an inscription over Him,

  388. This is the King of the Jews.

  389. Now, we'll read in just a moment

  390. a bit of interesting text

  391. in John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  392. Most of us know

  393. that there was this sign

  394. placed over Jesus' head

  395. that declared Him

  396. the King of the Jews.

  397. The religious leaders

  398. did not want such a sign

  399. to exist above Him.

  400. It was this very claim

  401. that they were crucifying Him for.

  402. And so,

  403. as this claim stood above Him,

  404. they had to stand around

  405. and make light of it.

  406. They had to say,

  407. Oh, here's the proof

  408. that He's not who He claimed to be

  409. or that this sign waves over Him

  410. because He can't save Himself

  411. from the cross.

  412. In John chapter 19,

    John 19:19

  413. verse 19 and following,

  414. we read this,

  415. Pilate also wrote an inscription

  416. and put it on the cross.

  417. It read,

  418. Jesus of Nazareth,

  419. the King of the Jews.

  420. Many of the Jews

  421. read this inscription,

  422. for the place where Jesus

  423. was crucified was near the city

  424. and it was written in Aramaic,

  425. in Latin,

  426. and in Greek.

  427. Everybody could read it.

  428. So the chief priest of the Jews

  429. said to Pilate,

  430. Do not write,

  431. The King of the Jews,

  432. but rather,

  433. this man said,

  434. I am the King of the Jews.

  435. And then Pilate answered,

  436. and I don't know if it's because

  437. Pilate was beginning to believe

  438. or if Pilate just was tired

  439. of placating them,

  440. but he answered,

  441. What I have written,

  442. I have written.

  443. So this statement stood over Christ

  444. as He hanged there and died.

  445. And the people had to make light of it

  446. to justify His murder.

  447. Fifth,

  448. the fifth incident we see

  449. in Psalm 22

  450. is the mocking of the criminals.

  451. Those that

  452. hung on His left and His right.

  453. Matthew 27 and verse 44.

  454. And the robbers,

  455. plural,

  456. the robbers who were crucified with Him

  457. also reviled Him

  458. in the same way.

  459. Luke tells us

  460. that one of these robbers

  461. came to believe

  462. that Jesus was the Christ

  463. in Luke 23,

    Luke 23:39

  464. verse 39 and following.

  465. Luke records this,

  466. one of the criminals

  467. who were hanged

  468. railed at Him saying,

  469. Are you not the Christ?

  470. Save yourself and us.

  471. But the other,

  472. now believing,

  473. rebuked Him saying,

  474. Do you not fear God

  475. since you are under

  476. the same sentence

  477. of condemnation?

  478. And we indeed justly,

  479. for we are receiving

  480. the due reward of our deeds,

  481. but this man has done

  482. nothing wrong.

  483. And he said,

  484. Jesus,

  485. remember me

  486. when you come

  487. into your kingdom.

  488. And Jesus said to him,

  489. Truly,

  490. I say to you,

  491. today you will be with me

  492. in paradise.

  493. Again,

  494. we see in Psalm 22

  495. and in verse 8,

  496. these words of derision,

  497. He trusts in the Lord.

  498. Let Him deliver Him.

  499. Let Him rescue Him,

  500. for He delights in Him.

  501. Jesus was even mocked

  502. by those found guilty

  503. and experiencing

  504. the same death.

  505. In Luke 23,

  506. we find Him

  507. so willing to forgive

  508. the transgressions

  509. at whose hands

  510. He suffered.

  511. In Luke 23,

  512. 34,

  513. He utters the words,

  514. Father,

  515. forgive them,

  516. for they know not

  517. what they do.

  518. He pitied the ignorance

  519. that would murder

  520. the one who came

  521. to save their souls.

  522. And we see the promise

  523. of paradise

  524. given to a repentant criminal

  525. who hung at Jesus' side.

  526. So can you see

  527. that Psalm 22

  528. is speaking toward

  529. this event

  530. that would happen

  531. one day?

  532. These things are going on

  533. just as Psalm 22

  534. said that they would.

  535. And what must have been

  536. going through

  537. the mind of our Savior

  538. as He experienced

  539. the most cruel of deaths

  540. ever employed

  541. by a nation state?

  542. This form of death

  543. was not only

  544. extremely painful,

  545. but it was meant

  546. to be a spectacle.

  547. The condemned

  548. were placed on display

  549. in a place of prominence

  550. for all to see

  551. and to consider

  552. the cost of law-breaking.

  553. So not only

  554. is Jesus dying

  555. a painful physical death,

  556. He's being rejected

  557. at every turn

  558. by those

  559. that He's dying for.

  560. In Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:12

  561. verse 12 and 13,

  562. what must Jesus

  563. have been thinking,

  564. right?

  565. Thinking about this Psalm.

  566. We're going to see

  567. that He speaks

  568. directly from it

  569. in a moment.

  570. Verse 12 and 13 say,

  571. many bulls encompass me.

  572. Strong bulls of passion

  573. surround me.

  574. They open wide

  575. their mouths at me

  576. like a ravening

  577. and roaring lion,

  578. right?

  579. Seeking my life.

  580. In the midst of all

  581. of David's prophecy

  582. of the coming Christ,

  583. he writes for us,

  584. carried along by the Spirit,

  585. these reprieves,

  586. like these moments

  587. of rest and reflection

  588. from all of the suffering.

  589. And here, I think,

  590. we get the most

  591. wonderful glimpse

  592. of the mind of Christ.

  593. So try to put yourself

  594. in His place.

  595. And we can't do this

  596. perfectly, to be sure.

  597. But considering

  598. the great horrors

  599. around Him

  600. and Him thinking

  601. about Psalm 22

  602. and running through

  603. the writing of,

  604. inspired writing

  605. of David.

  606. So we read in Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:9–11

  607. verse 9 through 11,

  608. Yet,

  609. this is a wonderful word,

  610. Yet,

  611. You are He

  612. who took me

  613. from the womb.

  614. You made me trust You

  615. at my mother's breasts.

  616. On You was I cast

  617. from my birth

  618. and from my mother's womb.

  619. You have been

  620. my God.

  621. Be not far from me,

  622. for trouble is near,

  623. and there is none

  624. to help.

  625. So we can imagine

  626. that Jesus,

  627. in this great anguish,

  628. turns to God

  629. in the writing of David

  630. in Psalm 22

  631. and finds comfort.

  632. Yet,

  633. You are God.

  634. The psalmist,

  635. and as I've argued,

  636. Jesus suffering greatly,

  637. looks to God the Father

  638. who was with Him

  639. from the very beginning

  640. and is,

  641. therefore,

  642. to be trusted

  643. for help,

  644. comfort,

  645. for peace,

  646. and for

  647. final

  648. deliverance.

  649. So,

  650. we get these reprieves

  651. in the midst

  652. of Psalm 22.

  653. Now,

  654. to think about this

  655. a bit more,

  656. let's take a look

  657. at the three statements

  658. that Jesus uttered

  659. on the cross

  660. that are found

  661. in this psalm.

  662. The first,

  663. we can read of

  664. in Matthew 27

  665. and verse 46,

  666. also Mark 15,

  667. 34.

  668. Matthew records for us

  669. about the ninth hour,

  670. Jesus cried out

  671. with a loud voice

  672. saying,

  673. Eli,

  674. Eli,

  675. lama sabachthani,

  676. sabachthani,

  677. that is,

  678. my God,

  679. my God,

  680. why have you forsaken me?

  681. At about 3 p.m.

  682. on that Friday,

  683. the sky went dark

  684. and Jesus laid down

  685. His life.

  686. The sinless for the sinful,

  687. the worthy for the unworthy,

  688. the blessed for the destitute.

  689. John Stott once said,

  690. our sins blotted out

  691. the sunshine

  692. of His Father's face.

  693. Christ became sin

  694. on our behalf.

  695. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5,

  696. 21,

  697. for our sake He made Him

  698. to be sin,

  699. who knew no sin,

  700. so that in Him

  701. we might become

  702. the righteousness

  703. of God.

  704. That great exchange

  705. that we talk about

  706. so often

  707. as Christ followers.

  708. In the Garden of Gethsemane,

  709. the night before

  710. Jesus' crucifixion,

  711. He prayed,

  712. as recorded in Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:39

  713. verse 39,

  714. and going a little farther,

  715. He fell on His face

  716. and prayed saying,

  717. My Father,

  718. if it be possible,

  719. let this cup

  720. pass from Me.

  721. Nevertheless,

  722. not as I will,

  723. but as You will.

  724. Now, beloved,

  725. it's important to understand

  726. that Jesus' anguish

  727. over His coming crucifixion

  728. was not due to the

  729. physical suffering

  730. He would experience.

  731. As great as it was,

  732. this was not what was

  733. causing Him

  734. to sweat blood.

  735. But rather,

  736. He was in such anguish

  737. because of the wrath

  738. of God

  739. that He was going

  740. to bear.

  741. Jesus had in mind

  742. passages like

  743. Jeremiah 25.

  744. This is verse 15 and 16

  745. of Jeremiah 25.

  746. Thus the Lord,

  747. the God of Israel,

  748. said to Me,

  749. this would be Jeremiah,

  750. Take from My hand

  751. this cup of the wine

  752. of wrath

  753. and make all the nations

  754. to whom I send you

  755. drink it.

  756. They shall drink it

  757. and stagger

  758. and be crazed

  759. because of the sword

  760. that I am sending

  761. among them.

  762. And then verse 27,

  763. Then you shall say to them,

  764. Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  765. the God of Israel,

  766. Drink,

  767. be drunk,

  768. and vomit.

  769. Fall and rise no more

  770. because of the sword

  771. that I am sending

  772. among you.

  773. This is the type of thing

  774. that Jesus has

  775. in His mind.

  776. He knows that He has come

  777. to be a propitiation,

  778. a replacement sacrifice

  779. for all that would trust

  780. in Him.

  781. And He is looking to

  782. this next day

  783. God's wrath

  784. being poured out on Him.

  785. And this is the cry.

  786. If there's any other way,

  787. let this cup

  788. pass

  789. from Me.

  790. God is

  791. just.

  792. And God is

  793. unchanging.

  794. And therefore,

  795. God must

  796. punish

  797. sin.

  798. God does not

  799. deal with disobedience

  800. the way so many of us

  801. imperfect parents

  802. deal with disobedience.

  803. Right?

  804. My grace to my children

  805. is often

  806. my laziness.

  807. I just overlook

  808. the things

  809. that they're doing.

  810. This is not

  811. the way

  812. the just God

  813. of the universe

  814. functions.

  815. There have been

  816. infractions

  817. and they must

  818. be paid for.

  819. If you and I

  820. were to have

  821. any hope

  822. of the forgiveness

  823. of our sin,

  824. we needed

  825. a substitute.

  826. The sins

  827. must be

  828. paid for.

  829. Jesus came

  830. to die

  831. our death.

  832. So as He hung

  833. on that

  834. cursed tree,

  835. He bore

  836. all of the wrath

  837. for all of the sin

  838. do you

  839. and I

  840. and all those

  841. who will ever

  842. or will

  843. whoever

  844. or will ever

  845. be called

  846. by His name.

  847. God the Father

  848. turned His face

  849. away from His Son

  850. and poured

  851. infinite wrath

  852. out

  853. on Him.

  854. We see the beginning

  855. of Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:1

  856. verse 1.

  857. My God,

  858. my God,

  859. why have you

  860. forsaken me?

  861. This is what

  862. Jesus is uttering.

  863. He is

  864. citing from.

  865. So we get

  866. a little more,

  867. a bit of an expansion

  868. when we look at

  869. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:1

  870. verse 1

  871. and then into

  872. verse 2.

  873. The psalmist says,

  874. Why are you so far

  875. from saving me

  876. from the words

  877. of my groaning?

  878. Oh,

  879. my God,

  880. I cry by day

  881. but you do not

  882. answer and by night

  883. but I find

  884. no rest.

  885. Can you feel,

  886. I hope you can,

  887. the expanding

  888. anguish?

  889. What's wrapped up

  890. in this phrase,

  891. my God,

  892. my God,

  893. why have you

  894. forsaken me?

  895. Why have you

  896. turned away

  897. from me?

  898. And then,

  899. Psalm 22

  900. gives us

  901. another reprieve

  902. and I suggest

  903. the hope

  904. that pulled

  905. Christ,

  906. the man,

  907. through this

  908. immeasurable

  909. suffering.

  910. The writer of Hebrews

  911. tells us in Hebrews 12

  912. too that Jesus

  913. endured the cross

  914. for the joy

  915. set before him.

  916. So,

  917. what I'm postulating

  918. and we have no

  919. clear evidence

  920. of this

  921. is that Jesus

  922. says the words,

  923. my God,

  924. my God,

  925. why have you

  926. forsaken me?

  927. And he's thinking

  928. about in this time,

  929. he's meditating

  930. upon,

  931. he's pondering

  932. verses 3

  933. and 4

  934. and 5,

  935. yet you are

  936. holy

  937. and throned

  938. on the praises

  939. of Israel.

  940. In you our fathers

  941. trusted,

  942. they trusted

  943. and you

  944. delivered them.

  945. To you they cried

  946. and were rescued.

  947. In you they trusted

  948. and were not

  949. put to shame.

  950. Jesus knew

  951. that he was fulfilling

  952. the will of the Father,

  953. his good Father

  954. and his will

  955. would be

  956. accomplished.

  957. The second utterance

  958. and a bit briefer

  959. in this case.

  960. We can read in

  961. John chapter 19

    John 19:28

  962. verse 28.

  963. After this,

  964. Jesus,

  965. knowing that

  966. all was now

  967. finished,

  968. said,

  969. and John includes

  970. the parenthetical,

  971. to fulfill the

  972. scripture,

  973. I thirst.

  974. Now this is

  975. certainly a direct

  976. reference to

  977. Psalm 69

  978. and verse 21

  979. which says,

  980. again prophetic,

  981. they gave me

  982. poison for food

  983. and for my thirst

  984. they gave me

  985. sour wine

  986. to drink.

  987. So Jesus says,

  988. I thirst

  989. so that this

  990. scripture would

  991. be fulfilled.

  992. But I think we also

  993. see it in

  994. Psalm 22.

  995. It's a little more

  996. difficult to get at

  997. but let me make the case

  998. for you briefly

  999. and then we'll move on

  1000. to the third

  1001. statement.

  1002. Psalm 22

    Psalms 22:14

  1003. verse 14

  1004. and 15.

  1005. David writes,

  1006. I am poured out

  1007. like water

  1008. and all my bones

  1009. are out of joint.

  1010. My heart

  1011. is like wax.

  1012. It is melted

  1013. within my breast.

  1014. My strength

  1015. is dried up

  1016. like a pot shirt

  1017. and my tongue

  1018. sticks to my jaws.

  1019. You lay me

  1020. in the dust

  1021. of death.

  1022. You hear the dry

  1023. and thirsty

  1024. language found

  1025. throughout

  1026. those two verses

  1027. and so Jesus

  1028. utters,

  1029. I thirst.

  1030. finished.

  1031. Thirdly,

  1032. and I think

  1033. most importantly,

  1034. in John 19

  1035. and 30,

  1036. when Jesus

  1037. had received

  1038. the sour wine

  1039. he said,

  1040. it is

  1041. finished

  1042. and he bowed

  1043. his head

  1044. and gave up

  1045. his spirit.

  1046. Jesus,

  1047. upon accomplishing

  1048. the task

  1049. that he became

  1050. a man to accomplish

  1051. uttered these

  1052. simple

  1053. but profound

  1054. words,

  1055. it is

  1056. finished.

  1057. He had done

  1058. all that he

  1059. was sent

  1060. to do

  1061. when he died

  1062. upon

  1063. the cross.

  1064. The writer of

  1065. Hebrews says

  1066. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1:3

  1067. chapter 1

  1068. verse 3,

  1069. Jesus Christ

  1070. is the radiance

  1071. of the glory

  1072. of God

  1073. and the exact

  1074. imprint

  1075. of his nature

  1076. and he upholds

  1077. the universe

  1078. by the word

  1079. of his power.

  1080. After making

  1081. purification

  1082. for sins,

  1083. he sat down

  1084. at the right

  1085. hand

  1086. of the majesty

  1087. on high.

  1088. Beloved,

  1089. this is so

  1090. significant

  1091. to the Hebrew

  1092. hearers

  1093. of the book

  1094. of Hebrews

  1095. because

  1096. in the temple

  1097. worship

  1098. all of the

  1099. continual

  1100. ongoing

  1101. ceremonial sacrifices

1102. that had to be made,

  1103. blood flowed

  1104. constantly

  1105. from the temple

  1106. and it was meant

  1107. to show

  1108. God's people

  1109. their great need

  1110. of a perfect

  1111. sacrifice

  1112. was meant

  1113. to show them

  1114. that all

  1115. these sacrifices

  1116. are inadequate

  1117. to cover

  1118. your sins.

  1119. So keep at it,

  1120. Israel.

  1121. Just keep making

  1122. sacrifice.

  1123. Keep making

  1124. sacrifice.

  1125. And all of the

  1126. careful instruction

  1127. for how the temple

  1128. was to be laid

  1129. out,

  1130. there's a piece

  1131. of furniture

  1132. that does not

  1133. exist in this

  1134. place

  1135. anywhere

  1136. to sit.

  1137. The priests

  1138. did not sit

  1139. down.

  1140. They were at

  1141. work constantly.

  1142. They worked

  1143. in shifts

  1144. and they did

  1145. not rest.

  1146. But our Lord

  1147. and Savior

  1148. Jesus Christ

  1149. finished the

  1150. work

  1151. and he sat

  1152. down.

  1153. This would

  1154. have been

  1155. astounding

  1156. to them

  1157. when they

  1158. heard it.

  1159. To us

  1160. we go,

  1161. yeah,

  1162. cool,

  1163. he's sitting.

  1164. No,

  1165. he is at

  1166. rest,

  1167. right?

  1168. He has made

  1169. that full

  1170. and final

  1171. sacrifice.

  1172. He drank

  1173. the entire

  1174. cup

  1175. of God's

  1176. wrath.

  1177. And when

  1178. he finished

  1179. it,

  1180. he turned

  1181. it over

  1182. and he

  1183. set it

  1184. down

  1185. and he

  1186. said,

  1187. it is

  1188. finished.

  1189. A complete

  1190. and perfect

  1191. sacrifice

  1192. for all

  1193. time

  1194. for those

  1195. who believe

  1196. in him.

  1197. Now,

  1198. I've been

  1199. making the

  1200. case that

  1201. this comes

  1202. from Psalm

  1203. 22.

  1204. If you're

  1205. tracking me,

  1206. it's okay

  1207. if you're not,

  1208. if you're

  1209. tracking me

  1210. and you're

  1211. being astute,

  1212. you go,

  1213. where is that

  1214. found?

  1215. Let me

  1216. show you.

  1217. Psalm

  1218. 22,

  1219. I'm going

  1220. to start

  1221. at verse

  1222. 29 and

  1223. read through

  1224. 31.

  1225. David

  1226. says,

  1227. All the

  1228. prosperous

  1229. of the

  1230. earth eat

  1231. and worship.

  1232. Before him

  1233. shall bow

  1234. all who

  1235. go down

  1236. to the

  1237. dust,

  1238. even the

  1239. one who

  1240. could not

  1241. keep himself

  1242. alive.

  1243. Posterity

  1244. shall serve

  1245. him that

  1246. shall be

  1247. told of

  1248. the Lord

  1249. to the

  1250. coming

  1251. generation.

  1252. They

  1253. shall

  1254. clumb

  1255. and

  1256. proclaim

  1257. his

  1258. righteousness

  1259. to a

  1260. people

  1261. yet

  1262. unborn.

  1263. And here

  1264. it is,

  1265. that he

  1266. has

  1267. done it.

  1268. And in

  1269. Hebrew,

  1270. this phrase

  1271. could have

  1272. very easily

  1273. been

  1274. translated

  1275. for us

  1276. that it

  1277. is

  1278. finished.

  1279. It would

  1280. have been

  1281. very precise

  1282. and faithful

  1283. to the

  1284. original text.

  1285. He

  1286. has

  1287. done it.

  1288. It

  1289. is

  1290. finished.

  1291. So,

  1292. I hope,

  1293. just considering

  1294. Christ's

  1295. death for

  1296. us,

  1297. you are

  1298. moved to

  1299. worship.

  1300. Let me

  1301. give you a

  1302. little more

  1303. specific

  1304. application,

  1305. and I

  1306. want to

  1307. do it

  1308. quickly,

  1309. and here's

  1310. where I'm

  1311. picking up

  1312. some of

  1313. the verses

  1314. I haven't

  1315. referenced.

  1316. I won't

  1317. read them

  1318. for the

  1319. sake of

  1320. time,

  1321. but

  1322. first,

  1323. note

  1324. how

  1325. we're

  1326. believing,

  1327. and I

  1328. think it's

  1329. a fair

  1330. belief,

  1331. that Jesus

  1332. Christ,

  1333. as He

  1334. hung on

  1335. the cross,

  1336. is carried

  1337. through

  1338. suffering by

  1339. considering,

  1340. He's

  1341. pondering the

  1342. Word of

  1343. God.

  1344. He's

  1345. looking back

  1346. to the

  1347. promises of

  1348. Scripture,

  1349. and He's

  1350. picking them

  1351. up.

  1352. He's

  1353. meditating

  1354. upon them,

  1355. and He's

  1356. turning that

  1357. into belief.

  1358. He's

  1359. pondering the

  1360. Word of

  1361. God.

  1362. And,

  1363. beloved,

  1364. we are to

  1365. do the

  1366. same.

  1367. Look to

  1368. Christ and

  1369. His great

  1370. anguish.

  1371. We have

  1372. never

  1373. experienced

  1374. such

  1375. suffering,

  1376. and we

  1377. never

  1378. will,

  1379. praise the

  1380. Lord,

  1381. because of

  1382. Him.

  1383. But when

  1384. you are

  1385. going

  1386. through

  1387. tough

  1388. times,

  1389. ponder

  1390. the

  1391. Word of

  1392. God.

  1393. Secondly,

  1394. we can

  1395. see that

  1396. Christ is

  1397. praying to

  1398. God for

  1399. help in

  1400. His time

  1401. of need.

  1402. So,

  1403. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:19–21

  1404. verse 19

  1405. through 21,

  1406. we see Him

  1407. cry out to

  1408. God.

  1409. Verse 21,

  1410. Save me

  1411. from the

  1412. mouth of

  1413. the lion,

  1414. and in

  1415. this sure

  1416. confidence,

  1417. you have

  1418. rescued me

  1419. from the

  1420. horns of

  1421. the wild

  1422. oxen.

  1423. Cry out to

  1424. God for

  1425. help in

  1426. times of

  1427. need.

  1428. Third,

  1429. we see

  1430. Jesus

  1431. praising

  1432. God for

  1433. the purposes

  1434. of suffering.

  1435. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:2–5

  1436. verse 2

  1437. through 5,

  1438. we see

  1439. Him seeing

  1440. how God

  1441. is working

  1442. in the

  1443. midst.

  1444. And we

  1445. know,

  1446. Romans 8,

  1447. that God

  1448. is bringing

  1449. about purpose

  1450. in all of

  1451. our suffering.

  1452. He's working

  1453. to bring us

  1454. to be like

  1455. our Lord and

  1456. Savior,

  1457. Jesus Christ.

  1458. So,

  1459. He is

  1460. pondering the

  1461. Word of

  1462. God.

  1463. He's praying

  1464. to God for

  1465. help in time

  1466. of need.

  1467. He's praising

  1468. God for the

  1469. purpose of

  1470. suffering.

  1471. And finally,

  1472. proclaiming

  1473. God's

  1474. goodness

  1475. to one

  1476. another

  1477. and to

  1478. the world.

  1479. To one

  1480. another,

  1481. we see in

  1482. Psalm 22,

    Psalms 22:22–26

  1483. verses 22

  1484. through 26.

  1485. I'll skip

  1486. down to

  1487. verse 25.

  1488. From you

  1489. comes my

  1490. praise in

  1491. the great

  1492. congregation.

  1493. My vows

  1494. I will

  1495. perform before

  1496. those who

  1497. fear Him.

  1498. We're to

  1499. sing God's

  1500. praises

  1501. to one

  1502. another.

  1503. And praise

  1504. God that

  1505. Jesus has

  1506. counted us,

  1507. those who

  1508. have placed

  1509. believing faith

  1510. in Him,

  1511. amongst the

  1512. congregation.

  1513. Again,

  1514. the book of

  1515. Hebrews,

  1516. the writer of

  1517. Hebrews says

  1518. in chapter 2,

  1519. verse 11

  1520. and 12,

  1521. for He

  1522. who sanctifies

  1523. and those

  1524. who are

  1525. sanctified

  1526. all have

  1527. one source.

  1528. That is why

  1529. He is not

  1530. ashamed to

  1531. call them

  1532. brothers,

  1533. saying,

  1534. I will tell

  1535. of your

  1536. name,

  1537. to my

  1538. brothers.

  1539. In the

  1540. midst of

  1541. the congregation,

  1542. I will

  1543. sing your

  1544. praise.

  1545. And because

  1546. Christ has

  1547. purchased us,

  1548. we are not

  1549. ashamed to

  1550. call one

  1551. another brother

  1552. and to share

  1553. His goodness

  1554. with each

  1555. other.

  1556. And we're

  1557. also meant

  1558. to do

  1559. this to

  1560. the world.

  1561. Again,

  1562. Psalm 22,

  1563. 27 and

  1564. 28,

  1565. all the

  1566. ends of

  1567. the earth

  1568. shall

  1569. remember

  1570. and turn

  1571. to the

  1572. Lord,

  1573. and all

  1574. the families

  1575. of the

  1576. nations

  1577. shall

  1578. worship

  1579. before

  1580. you.

  1581. For

  1582. kingship

  1583. belongs

  1584. to the

  1585. Lord,

  1586. and He

  1587. rules

  1588. over the

  1589. nations.

  1590. This

  1591. good news

  1592. of Jesus

  1593. Christ

  1594. is meant

  1595. to be

  1596. proclaimed

  1597. to all

  1598. people

  1599. everywhere.

  1600. So I

  1601. hope,

  1602. once again,

  1603. that your

  1604. heart has

  1605. been warmed

  1606. by the

  1607. loving kindness

  1608. of God

  1609. to us

  1610. in the

  1611. death

  1612. of Jesus

  1613. Christ.

  1614. Please join me

  1615. in prayer,

  1616. and then

  1617. we're going

  1618. to close

  1619. in a

  1620. couple

  1621. of songs

  1622. of praise.
