  1. Last December I was invited by Nathan to give a message for Advent on peace.

  2. !

  3. He makes peace and he preaches peace.

  4. Today I've been invited again to speak about peace.

  5. We had a little laugh at the dinner table when I told our young ladies,

  6. Wow, Dad, you just preached on peace in December.

  7. But it's a further aspect that I think somewhat completes the idea that we began to look at back then.

  8. And it has to do or highlights the continuing role that Jesus' followers have in bringing his peace to fruition.

  9. So let's look at, read together Matthew 5 and verse 9.

  10. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

  11. Father, thank you for your word that it is life to us.

  12. That your spirit is here with us.

  13. And we ask you to awaken our hearts to grasp exactly what you want us to hear and know.

  14. And to strengthen us in order to live faithfully.

  15. In the light of your love and desire to bring your kingdom.

  16. In Jesus' name.

  17. Amen.

  18. I think the topic of peace should pique our interest because the world around us is so much in need of peace.

  19. Someone in 2003 calculated that of the last 3,400 years of recorded history,

  20. only 268 of those years have been war-free.

  21. That sink in.

  22. These continually present wars show us the desperate need for peace among nations.

  23. But in addition, lingering racial tensions show us the ongoing need of peace among people groups.

  24. And the present high rate of divorces, broken families, conflicts with roommates, neighbors, and co-workers that we all face show us the need for peace in our interpersonal relationships.

  25. But as much as negotiated truces and discrimination laws and counseling have been helpful,

  26. history and our own experience has shown us that the world's peace is at best uneasy and temporary.

  27. But in contrast, the gospel, the gospel that we cherish, the gospel that we love and proclaim every week offers a different kind of peace.

  28. It is a powerful peace.

  29. It is a peace that Jesus makes between God and his people and between you and other believers.

  30. It is a peace that doesn't just restrict hostility.

  31. It completely eliminates the hostility.

  32. The prophetic portrait of the church in the book of Revelation depicting a great multitude that no one can number from every nation,

  33. from all tribes of people and languages,

  34. standing before the throne and the Lamb, clothed in white robes with palm branches in their hands.

  35. This depiction is not just a roll call of everybody that's going to show up in heaven someday.

  36. This is an amazing glimpse into the glorious destiny of the church.

  37. True unity among great diversity.

  38. This unity appears to be foremost in the mind of Jesus just before he was crucified.

  39. And we can see it in his prayer in John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  40. And I like to read a couple passages out of John 17.

  41. First in verse 11, he is praying,

  42. And he makes that request even stronger and broader when he continues in verse 20.

  43. I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word.

  44. That's us.

  45. That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I in you.

  46. That they may also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  47. If this was so important to Jesus, then I hope you agree with me.

  48. It should be a primary concern for us who are his followers.

  49. The beatitude we are looking at this morning in Matthew 5 verse 9

    Matthew 5:9

  50. affirms this point in the strongest way.

  51. It links the very identity of God's children with the activity of peacemaking.

  52. It must be obvious to us that the church has not yet fully experienced this peace.

  53. Our assurance is that one day it will be complete.

  54. But perhaps what is not so obvious is that each one of us has a role in the process.

  55. Church splits.

  56. Segregated congregations.

  57. Crises among Christian families.

  58. Other broken relationships among believers show us that the task is far from finished.

  59. And what the passage before us this morning suggests is that the peacemaking that Jesus describes

  60. is the normal activity of the children of God.

  61. And that which best represents our father's nature.

  62. In a fallen and divided and conflict-ridden world.

  63. Of course, in this world, peacemaking is usually a painful process.

  64. Now, like most Proverbs, Matthew 5 verse 9 has its limitations.

    Matthew 5:9

  65. It doesn't instruct us how to be peacemakers.

  66. Nor does it even command us to be peacemakers.

  67. Neither does it show the context for peacemaking.

  68. Rather, I believe it simply serves to encourage us that the change that God has worked in us to make us peacemakers is evidence that we belong to him.

  69. And the fact that we thus belong to him is what makes us blessed.

  70. I believe this morning Jesus wants to encourage you and me by reminding us of what truly makes up the blessed life.

  71. Each succeeding beatitude affirms this.

  72. And in this seventh beatitude, we focus first on the idea of peacemakers.

  73. And then the benefit that belongs to you and I.

  74. First, Jesus wants you to know that peacemakers are among those who are blessed.

  75. Blessed are the peacemakers.

  76. Very straightforward.

  77. So, to begin with, I'd like to consider what peacemaker is.

  78. The Greek term that we find behind this word is a compound word that is translated literally peacemakers.

  79. Really simple.

  80. But it's only used right here in the New Testament.

  81. When a word is only used once in the scripture, it's difficult to interpret it.

  82. More difficult, perhaps, because we don't have the support of other uses to determine meaning.

  83. But in this case, we do have some other help.

  84. In Colossians 1.20, we find a verbal form of the same compound that refers to Jesus as one making peace by the blood of his cross.

  85. And closely related to that is Ephesians 2.15.

  86. Where there are two words.

  87. Where the two words of the compound are used separately.

  88. To simply say, making peace.

  89. And there he describes the mysterious work of Jesus when he created a unity between Jews and Gentiles who were previously enemies.

  90. Now, both passages emphasize God's work of reconciliation.

  91. And the use of the word peace in these passages, I think, aligns more with the Hebrew relational idea of shalom rather than the Latin pacts or the Greek irain.

  92. Which we get the name Irene.

  93. Both which refer to a state of being consisting of no war.

  94. There's a, you know, that kind of peace is just the absence of war.

  95. It's a state of quiet.

  96. Whereas the Hebrew word shalom refers more to harmony and wholeness and welfare.

  97. And it's a relational kind of term.

  98. And the uses in Ephesians and Colossians suggest to us then that Jesus' peacemakers are those who are somehow involved in his reconciling work.

  99. Now, further than that, we have a passage right here in Matthew chapter 5 that appears to shed some light on the idea.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  100. Look at verses 43 through 45.

  101. In chapter 5 of Matthew.

  102. I'll read those verses.

  103. You have heard that it was said,

  104. You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  105. But I say to you,

  106. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  107. So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  108. For he makes his son to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

  109. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?

  110. Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

  111. And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others?

  112. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  113. You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  114. Now, even though the word peace is not used here in this section,

  115. the connection to this seventh beatitude is quite strong.

  116. The main similarity is the use of the phrase,

  117. Sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  118. And Jesus is saying that contrary to the present religious teaching,

  119. he instructs his followers to love their enemies.

  120. And he says it's an attitude that reflects the care that God has for those who are evil as well as good.

  121. And the characteristic of love in a follower of Jesus is what designates him as a son.

  122. A son of the Father.

  123. The same identification we find in Matthew chapter 5 verse 9 for peacemakers.

    Matthew 5:9

  124. So what I think Jesus is describing is not someone who simply tolerates enemies,

  125. but who actually loves and actively demonstrates that love through prayer and interaction with them.

  126. And really that's the heart of peacemaking.

  127. Verses 44 and 47 provide two simple ways this love is demonstrated.

  128. First, pray for those who persecute you.

  129. This is a way in which peacemaking is accomplished.

  130. And second, by, interestingly, greeting.

  131. They're not complex tasks, but they can be difficult.

  132. God has not left us alone in the process of peacemaking.

  133. It's his task, but he wants us to participate with him.

  134. And so prayer must be natural.

  135. And praying for enemies is a first and major, perhaps the most important step.

  136. But why does he mention greeting?

  137. Hey, enemy.

  138. Hey, enemy.

  139. Perhaps it's simply a simple but powerful way of making a bridge.

  140. There's someone who doesn't like you, hates you, has a problem with you.

  141. John Piper has an insightful insight here.

  142. He says, peacemaking tries to build bridges to people.

  143. It does not want the animosity to remain.

  144. It wants reconciliation.

  145. It wants harmony.

  146. And so it tries to show what may be the only courtesy the enemy will tolerate.

  147. Namely, a greeting.

  148. The peacemaker looks the enemy right in the eye and says, good morning, John.

  149. And he says it with a longing for peace in his heart, not with a phony gloss of politeness to cover his anger.

  150. Peacemaking is not necessarily a pleasant task.

  151. And there are major areas that fall under this category.

  152. Important, serious issues.

  153. But we have to begin right here.

  154. Right with our neighbor.

  155. Right with the conflict that we are experiencing.

  156. And to love.

  157. And to seek reconciliation.

  158. Whether it's a conflict between you and another person.

  159. Or between two other people.

  160. Or between groups.

  161. The process is difficult.

  162. And it's often painful.

  163. And it's not always successful.

  164. But the point is, it's the normal occupation of every believer of Jesus.

  165. According to Jesus, these, as well as the previous Beatitudes, these peacemakers are the blessed.

  166. Nathan has already adequately explained the difficulty in translating the Greek word from which we get the word blessed.

  167. Blessed.

  168. Blessed.

  169. Most translators and scholars understand the limitations of the word blessed.

  170. But they use it anyway.

  171. And so I'm using it anyway.

  172. I think it's because all the other words suggested have their own problems as well.

  173. And we just don't have in English a 100% equivalent word.

  174. And so, blessed is sufficient.

  175. But what's really important to see here is that peacemakers are included in this unusual list that is described as having great benefit.

  176. And so whether you use the word blessed or whether it's fortunate or whether it's happy or whether it's flourishing,

  177. ending the peacemaker is a beneficiary and this will be well known.

  178. But also, like the other subjects of the Beatitudes, the benefit isn't the condition or the subject or the activity being described.

  179. in other words there's nothing blessed about the pain of desperation the pain of sorrow there's

  180. nothing blessed about the pain of restraint restraint or unsatisfied longing or the pain of

  181. of standing in the middle of warring people and getting hit from both sides there's nothing

  182. blessed in that the reason they're blessed is because of the promise and that brings us to the

  183. second part of the verse not only does jesus want you to understand that peacemakers are among those

  184. who are blessed but he understands he wants you to understand why peacemakers are blessed

  185. because they will be called the sons of god

  186. now if you were to go to israel or

  187. run into some israeli people in walmart

  188. there are various ways to ask someone their name you can simply ask what's your name

  189. ma shemcha or ma shmech

  190. but you find commonly this other phrase and it's simply

  191. eich korim lacha or eich korim lach if it's a female so memorize that when you run into an israeli at walmart and you hear them speaking hebrew you just walk up to him and say eich korim lacha and they'll go oh you speak hebrew okay of course they'll say it in hebrew and you won't understand what they're saying but

  192. but it is literally translated how

  193. how

  194. do they call you

  195. eich korim how are they calling you in other words what's your name

  196. and i think

  197. eich korim lacha and i think it's very similar

  198. and i think it's very similar

  199. it's very similar

  200. to the sense used here by the verb

  201. it's an idiomatic way of stating one's identity

  202. they will be called the sons of god because

  203. they are

  204. the sons of god

  205. now

  206. this concept of the sons of god is an important one for us and

  207. it has a rich

  208. biblical context

  209. context

  210. all the way back to the garden

  211. god announces something unique about the

  212. creation of humanity

  213. they

  214. among all his creation will be created

  215. in the image

  216. and likeness of god

  217. now though there are various opinions about exactly what that image and likeness

  218. referred to

  219. there's strong evidence in

  220. in

  221. the scripture itself

  222. and in the context of the

  223. the ancient world at that time

  224. that both rulership and sonship

  225. are in view

  226. man was created as the image of god

  227. according to

  228. genesis 1 26 through 28

  229. and first corinthians 11 7 supports that

  230. in relation to the world

  231. man is

  232. a ruler

  233. in relation to god

  234. he is a son

  235. now this idea

  236. of sonship

  237. is supported by the use of the same term in

  238. genesis chapter 5

    Genesis 5:1–3

  239. verses 1 through 3

  240. they're

  241. referring to the relationship between a human father

  242. and his son

  243. let's look at that just for a minute

  244. if you want to turn there

  245. genesis 5

  246. 1 through 3

  247. this is the second

  248. place where

  249. image and likeness are used

  250. in the scripture

  251. and it says there in genesis 5

  252. 1

  253. this is the book of the generations of adam

  254. when god created man he made him in the likeness of god

  255. male and female he created them and blessed them

  256. and named them man when they were created

  257. and adam lived 130 years

  258. or when adam lived 130 years

  259. he fathered a son

  260. in his own likeness

  261. after his image

  262. and named him

  263. seth

  264. and on and on it goes

  265. and the idea is further supported by luke

  266. in his genealogy

  267. in chapter 3 verse 38

  268. where he

  269. ending the genealogy of jesus

  270. says in verse 38

  271. the son of enos

  272. the son of seth

  273. the son of adam

  274. the son

  275. of god

  276. so as a son

  277. adam was to reflect

  278. god's likeness

  279. in a way that he

  280. in the way that he ruled over creation

  281. mediating god's will

  282. later the designation

  283. of son of god

  284. was inherited by israel

  285. eventually being applied

  286. to the kings of israel

  287. solomon especially

  288. he will

  289. he will be a son to me

  290. i will be his father

  291. and then jesus

  292. in jesus

  293. the idea of sonship

  294. takes on its full significance

  295. and then finally

  296. the designation

  297. sons of god

  298. continues to those who believe in him

  299. and that's us

  300. now some of the translations say

  301. children here

  302. and that's

  303. legitimate

  304. because

  305. of

  306. the fact that it is generic

  307. although

  308. man in the old testament

  309. is generic there

  310. at least where it speaks

  311. of humanity

  312. and not specific man

  313. adam

  314. but i think the word

  315. sons here

  316. helps us

  317. because it links us

  318. back to this rich history

  319. of sonship

  320. and what god

  321. is implying

  322. by this term

  323. in the old testament

  324. this image

  325. and likeness

  326. was to be

  327. reflected in man's

  328. dominion

  329. over creation

  330. in his character

  331. in the way he rules

  332. he had

  333. relationship with god

  334. in the garden

  335. and from that relationship

  336. then he was able

  337. to

  338. to adequately

  339. and

  340. and represent god

  341. in a way that

  342. that

  343. was consistent

  344. with who god

  345. was

  346. and is

  347. but here in matthew

  348. there seems to be

  349. an added dimension

  350. and that is

  351. not just

  352. rulership

  353. but love

  354. motivated

  355. peacemaking

  356. and it's appropriate

  357. considering

  358. the state

  359. the world

  360. is in

  361. what jesus

  362. appears to be saying

  363. is that peacemakers

  364. reflect

  365. god's heart

  366. for reconciliation

  367. and unity

  368. in such a way

  369. that reveals

  370. that they are

  371. actually

  372. the sons of god

  373. that is why

  374. they are blessed

  375. the blessing

  376. is that god

  377. has included you

  378. in his family

  379. and this

  380. blessing

  381. is consistent

  382. with the other

  383. blessings

  384. of the beatitudes

  385. possessing the kingdom

  386. of heaven

  387. being comforted

  388. inheriting the earth

  389. being satisfied

  390. seeing god

  391. being called

  392. the sons

  393. of god

  394. these all

  395. reflect

  396. in different

  397. words

  398. and

  399. different

  400. nuances

  401. the same

  402. idea

  403. that

  404. the blessing

  405. is that we

  406. are included

  407. the blessing

  408. is that

  409. we belong

  410. to god

  411. the blessing

  412. is that

  413. the kingdom

  414. is ours

  415. the blessing

  416. is that

  417. we

  418. are a part

  419. of god's

  420. plan

  421. and that's

  422. the hope

  423. i believe

  424. jesus wants

  425. you to have

  426. to hold on

  427. to

  428. to take

  429. with you

  430. this morning

  431. now in conclusion

  432. and i know my

  433. family's really

  434. surprised to hear

  435. me say that

  436. so soon

  437. it's funny

  438. because i showed

  439. one of my

  440. daughters my

  441. notes today

  442. she goes

  443. six pages

  444. that's all

  445. miracles

  446. happen

  447. but i believe

  448. that jesus's

  449. reason for

  450. beginning the

  451. sermon on the

  452. mount with

  453. these beatitudes

  454. is just

  455. as important

  456. to us

  457. today as it

  458. was to the

  459. disciples that

  460. first heard

  461. him

  462. just like

  463. them

  464. he wants

  465. to encourage

  466. you

  467. who follow

  468. him

  469. to keep

  470. your hope

  471. fixed

  472. on him

  473. to understand

  474. that peacemakers

  475. are among

  476. those who are

  477. in this way

  478. blessed

  479. and that

  480. peacemakers

  481. are blessed

  482. because they

  483. will be called

  484. the sons of

  485. god

  486. as the

  487. introduction

  488. to jesus's

  489. sermon on

  490. the mount

  491. the beatitudes

  492. have an

  493. important place

  494. when you think

  495. of this in the

  496. context of the

  497. sermon

  498. the sermon

  499. is a beautifully

  500. structured

  501. teaching

  502. that warns

  503. against

  504. deceptive

  505. religious

  506. hypocrisy

  507. that relies

  508. on external

  509. righteousness

  510. that seeks

  511. the approval

  512. of man

  513. rather than

  514. god

  515. that exhibits

  516. a compromising

  517. loyalty

  518. to god

  519. and to

  520. the things

  521. of this

  522. world

  523. and that

  524. kind of

  525. religion

  526. jesus makes

  527. very clear

  528. is not

  529. enough for

  530. salvation

  531. and will

  532. crumble

  533. in the

  534. storms

  535. of

  536. judgment

  537. the vision

  538. of a

  539. higher

  540. kind of

  541. life

  542. a better

  543. righteousness

  544. is cast

  545. in the

  546. beatitudes

  547. and it's

  548. unpacked

  549. in the rest

  550. of the

  551. sermon

  552. many of us

  553. today

  554. are in

  555. similar

  556. or in

  557. danger

  558. of a

  559. similar

  560. religious

  561. approach

  562. to our

  563. faith

  564. god

  565. will love

  566. me

  567. if i do

  568. this

  569. you might

  570. even be

  571. thinking

  572. i gotta be a

  573. better

  574. peacemaker

  575. i gotta

  576. you know

  577. do this

  578. kind of

  579. thing

  580. because

  581. i want

  582. to be

  583. right

  584. with god

  585. that's

  586. that's

  587. what he's

  588. trying

  589. to have

  590. us

  591. avoid

  592. and

  593. the

  594. sermon

  595. on the

  596. mount

  597. helps

  598. us

  599. with

  600. that

  601. but

  602. there

  603. is also

  604. another

  605. kind

  606. of

  607. danger

  608. another

  609. kind

  610. of

  611. deception

  612. and it's

  613. a

  614. deception

  615. that

  616. relies

  617. solely

  618. on

  619. mental

  620. assent

  621. to

  622. certain

  623. doctrines

  624. as

  625. evidence

  626. and

  627. assurance

  628. that

  629. we are

  630. god's

  631. people

  632. rather

  633. than

  634. looking

  635. for

  636. evidence

  637. in our

  638. lives

  639. we

  640. we ask

  641. ourselves

  642. if we

  643. believe

  644. the right

  645. things

  646. or we

  647. have a

  648. list

  649. of

  650. things

  651. that

  652. we

  653. know

  654. if we

  655. believe

  656. these

  657. things

  658. we're

  659. okay

  660. with

  661. god

  662. and

  663. they

  664. even

  665. sound

  666. good

  667. justification

  668. by

  669. faith

  670. scripture

  671. alone

  672. trinity

  673. and

  674. we

  675. believe

  676. these

  677. things

  678. as

  679. long

  680. as

  681. we've

  682. got

  683. that

  684. together

  685. we're

  686. okay

  687. and

  688. yet

  689. somehow

  690. we

  691. might

  692. not

  693. see

  694. the

  695. brokenness

  696. of

  697. spirit

  698. we

  699. might

  700. not

  701. see

  702. a

  703. mourning

  704. in

  705. us

  706. we

  707. might

  708. not

  709. see

  710. a

  711. desire

  712. for

  713. the

  714. unity

  715. of the

  716. body

  717. that

  718. Jesus

  719. is

  720. praying

  721. so

  722. passionately

  723. for

  724. and

  725. we

  726. should

  727. be

  728. alarmed

  729. if

  730. we

  731. don't

  732. see

  733. those

  734. things

  735. in

  736. ourselves

  737. and

  738. I

  739. think

  740. that's

  741. the

  742. reason

  743. why

  744. the

  745. sermon

  746. on

  747. the

  748. mount

  749. is

  750. given

  751. to

  752. us

  753. to

  754. show

  755. us

  756. that

  757. the

  758. work

  759. that

  760. the

  761. cross

  762. accomplished

  763. in

  764. reconciling

  765. man

  766. to

  767. God

  768. and

  769. reconciling

  770. one

  771. another

  772. to

  773. each

  774. other

  775. and

  776. in

  777. changing

  778. us

  779. from the

  780. inside

  781. so that

  782. can be

  783. possible

  784. that

  785. work

  786. will

  787. be

  788. demonstrated

  789. it

  790. will

  791. happen

  792. we

  793. should

  794. be

  795. able

  796. to

  797. see

  798. it

  799. in

  800. us

  801. and

  802. that

  803. is

  804. the

  805. evidence

  806. that

  807. we

  808. are

  809. among

  810. the

  811. blessed

  812. Jesus

  813. wants

  814. you

  815. and

  816. I

  817. to

  818. escape

  819. both

  820. deceptions

  821. he

  822. wants

  823. us

  824. to

  825. look

  826. at

  827. our

  828. hearts

  829. and

  830. our

  831. lives

  832. and

  833. to

  834. evaluate

  835. whether

  836. or

  837. not

  838. we

  839. see

  840. Christ's

  841. righteousness

  842. being

  843. formed

  844. in

  845. us

  846. we

  847. should

  848. not

  849. only

  850. ask

  851. ourselves

  852. if we

  853. believe

  854. rightly

  855. about

  856. something

  857. but

  858. we

  859. should

  860. also

  861. ask

  862. ourselves

  863. if

  864. we

  865. see

  866. the

  867. word

  868. of

  869. God

  870. in

  871. our

  872. heart

  873. making

  874. us

  875. long

  876. with

  877. Jesus

  878. for

  879. the

  880. unity

  881. of

  882. the

  883. church

  884. and

  885. to

  886. be

  887. determined

  888. to

  889. be

  890. involved

  891. Amen
