  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn with me to Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. Our text for this morning is Matthew chapter 5 verses 17 through 20.

    Matthew 5:17–20

  3. ! Before I read that, nine weeks ago I had intended to begin a study of Exodus 20 with a particular concern for the place of the law in the life of the law.

  4. Of the Christian. And this was a oft-used cross-reference text for that very study.

  5. What is the place of the law in the life of the Christian?

  6. In my studying, I discovered broad disagreement on the matter.

  7. So, we decided to call an audible a week before I was meant to begin that, on Friday in fact, before we were meant to begin that series,

  8. and begin a series on Jesus' famous Sermon on the Mount,

  9. knowing full well that we would arrive at our text for this morning and be pressed once again to consider the place of the law in the life of the Christian.

  10. This morning, we will only have time for the beginning of that consideration,

  11. but I promise that we will work it out together in the coming weeks.

  12. So, let's read together Matthew chapter 5 verse 17 through 20 in order to begin this first part of our study.

    Matthew 5:17–20

  13. Beloved, this is God's Word to us.

  14. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  15. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  16. Verse 17 and following.

  17. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  18. I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  19. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

  20. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  21. But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  22. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  23. Before I proceed to say anything concerning today's text,

  24. I want us to be reminded that this most famous of Jesus' sermons was aimed primarily at His disciples

  25. and was about what their life in the kingdom of heaven was to look like.

  26. Recall back in Matthew chapter 4 and verse 17,

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  27. Matthew records,

  28. From that time Jesus began to preach saying,

  29. this is Matthew's summary of Jesus' preaching,

  30. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  31. And then at the beginning of Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  32. we see that Jesus, seeing the crowds, went up on the mountain,

  33. and when He sat down, His disciples came to Him,

  34. and He opened His mouth and taught them saying,

  35. and then we launch into the Beatitudes.

  36. While His primary audience are the disciples,

  37. we cannot lose sight of the fact that there were crowds.

  38. The image in my mind is that Jesus who is escaping to teach a primary audience.

  39. So He's getting away from the hubbub and the noise in order to teach His disciples.

  40. But as the crowd begins to gather around Him and this teaching,

  41. He also has to pick up the matter of teaching others

  42. who are gathering to hear this most astonishing of sermons.

  43. So He's also speaking to those outside that closer and inner circle.

  44. We get a clue of this in the very end of this sermon on the Mount,

  45. Matthew chapter 27 and verse 28.

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  46. Matthew records,

  47. And when Jesus finished these sayings,

  48. the crowds were astonished at His teaching.

  49. So there are crowds,

  50. and they are hearing what's being said.

  51. And then Matthew tells us why the crowds were astonished in verse 29.

  52. For He was teaching them as one who had authority and not as their scribes.

  53. This is what was so amazing about Jesus' teaching.

  54. He taught with absolute authority.

  55. And this made Jews seeking to evaluate Jesus very nervous.

  56. They were concerned with what He thought of the law

  57. and what He thought of Moses and the prophets.

  58. So Jesus, speaking to His disciples,

  59. has said some incredible things in verses 3 through 16 of chapter 5,

  60. which we've been considering over the past nine weeks.

  61. He has told them that citizens of His kingdom

  62. would be about the work of turning this upside-down world back right-side up.

  63. That they would be a people marked by spiritual poverty,

  64. sadness over their sin and the sins of others,

  65. meekness, a longing for righteousness,

  66. mercy, purity of heart, peacemaking.

  67. That they would bring preservation and light to the world

  68. and that they would be hated for it.

  69. Recall Jesus' themes throughout the Sermon on the Mount

  70. of human flourishing.

  71. Who is the blessed man?

  72. Human and whole person righteousness.

  73. Less what you do and more who you are.

  74. The religious leaders of Jesus' day

  75. had so manipulated God's law

  76. with the rabbinical, scribal traditions

  77. meant to interpret the law

  78. but served rather to obscure it,

  79. They were only concerned with the outward,

  80. the tangible and imposed impossible burdens on others

  81. and quite frankly on themselves.

  82. They were the very definition of legalists.

  83. Making themselves appear righteous,

  84. righteous in their own eyes

  85. by asking others to conform to them.

  86. And this was a great issue of their day.

  87. To give you some flavor of it,

  88. I'm going to read you just a bit of commentary

  89. from John MacArthur's commentary

  90. on this very text.

  91. Where he writes,

  92. The rabbis,

  93. And this was a tradition.

  94. They had many written sayings.

  95. They're called the traditions.

  96. Interpretations of the law.

  97. The rabbis looked through the scripture

  98. to find various commands and regulations.

  99. And to those,

  100. they would add supplemental requirements.

  101. They're often called hedge laws.

  102. To the command not to work on the Sabbath,

  103. they added the idea

  104. that carrying a burden

  105. was a form of work.

  106. They then faced the question

  107. of determining exactly

  108. what constituted a burden.

  109. They decided that a burden is food

  110. equal to the weight of a fig.

  111. Enough wine for mixing in a goblet.

  112. Milk enough for one's swallow.

  113. Honey enough to put on a wound.

  114. Oil enough to anoint

  115. a small member of the body.

  116. Water enough to moisten eye salve.

  117. Paper enough to write

  118. a customs house notice.

  119. Ink enough to write

  120. two letters of the alphabet.

  121. Read enough to make a pen.

  122. And so on and so on.

  123. To carry anything more

  124. than those prescribed amounts

  125. on the Sabbath

  126. was to break the law.

  127. So out of what I believe

  128. would have began

  129. as a good intention,

  130. a wrong understanding of the law,

  131. but a good intention

  132. to keep it,

  133. these types of burdens

  134. had been amassed

  135. and built up.

  136. And the religious leaders

  137. of the day said,

  138. do these things

  139. look like us?

  140. These outward keeping,

  141. this exterior farce

  142. of keeping the law,

  143. and you will be

  144. in God's good favor.

  145. Jesus was not standing

  146. for this type of thing.

  147. Listen to what he said

  148. in Matthew 23

  149. in verse 15

  150. to these very men.

  151. He says,

  152. Woe to you,

  153. scribes and Pharisees,

  154. hypocrites.

  155. He points out the very fact

  156. that they weren't keeping

  157. their own expectations.

  158. And then he goes on to say,

  159. For you travel across sea and land

  160. to make a single proselyte,

  161. a convert to Judaism.

  162. And when he becomes

  163. a proselyte,

  164. you make him twice

  165. as much a child of hell

  166. as yourselves.

  167. This was the good

  168. that these types

  169. of expectation were.

  170. They simply damned people.

  171. Matthew 15

  172. and verse 6.

  173. Jesus says of these

  174. religious leaders,

  175. For the sake

  176. of your tradition,

  177. you have made void

  178. the word of God.

  179. This was the religious world

  180. that Jesus is speaking into

  181. as he preaches

  182. the sermon before us

  183. this morning.

  184. He is addressing those

  185. who would pile up

  186. impossible burdens.

  187. But he is also speaking

  188. to those who interpreted

  189. Jeremiah chapter 31

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  190. and verse 31,

  191. which says,

  192. Behold, the days are coming,

  193. declares the Lord.

  194. when I will make

  195. a new covenant

  196. with the house of Israel

  197. and the house of Judah.

  198. He is addressing also

  199. those who would take

  200. Jeremiah 31, 31

  201. to mean

  202. that the Messiah

  203. would annul

  204. the old covenant

  205. in its entirety

  206. and replace it

  207. with a completely

  208. new moral basis.

  209. There were many

  210. that Jesus was speaking to

  211. that were seeking

  212. for the Messiah

  213. to come and wipe

  214. the slate entirely clean.

  215. to put away

  216. Moses and the prophets

  217. and start with

  218. a fresh piece

  219. of parchment

  220. and write

  221. new command

  222. altogether.

  223. In many ways,

  224. these are the people

  225. who are on the opposite

  226. side of the

  227. legalist coin.

  228. They're the licentious,

  229. the antinomians,

  230. the ones who wanted

  231. nothing to do

  232. with the law

  233. anymore.

  234. And he's speaking

  235. to both of these crowds,

  236. both those who wanted

  237. everyone to keep

  238. these very carefully

  239. put in place

  240. hedge laws

  241. and those who were

  242. exhausted by

  243. the demanding

  244. hypocritical legalism

  245. of the religious leaders.

  246. So it is at this point

  247. in Jesus' sermon,

  248. as he has already said

  249. so much to flip the world

  250. on its head,

  251. that he makes

  252. two audacious claims

  253. concerning the Scripture.

  254. So this is your outline

  255. for this morning.

  256. He makes two audacious claims.

  257. Number one,

  258. that the Scripture

  259. is authoritative.

  260. The Scripture

  261. authored by God

  262. is authoritative.

  263. And secondly,

  264. Jesus makes the claim

  265. that He

  266. is the authority

  267. of the Scripture.

  268. He says,

  269. I am the authority

  270. of the Scripture.

  271. The Scripture

  272. is authoritative.

  273. And Jesus

  274. is the authority

  275. of the Scripture.

  276. So first,

  277. the Scripture

  278. is authoritative.

  279. Jesus says

  280. in verse 17,

  281. Do not think.

  282. Which would suggest

  283. that some were thinking.

  284. Right?

  285. Do not think.

  286. Do not make

  287. the error of thinking

  288. that I have come to

  289. abolish the law

  290. or the prophets.

  291. Now,

  292. we'll talk a bit about

  293. the word abolish

  294. in a moment,

  295. but first,

  296. let's take a look

  297. at this idea

  298. of the law

  299. or the prophets.

  300. Now,

  301. the Jews of Jesus' day

  302. referred to the law

  303. in four different ways.

  304. They would use this term,

  305. law,

  306. in four different ways.

  307. First,

  308. the Jew of Jesus' day

  309. may have said the law

  310. and be referring

  311. specifically to

  312. the Ten Commandments

  313. found in Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  314. chapter 20,

  315. those commands

  316. that God etched

  317. in stone

  318. and gave to Moses

  319. on Mount Sinai.

  320. So that's first,

  321. the law,

  322. the Ten Commandments.

  323. Secondly,

  324. they could have also

  325. used that phrase,

  326. the law,

  327. to refer to

  328. the Pentateuch,

  329. the first five books

  330. of the Old Testament

  331. traditionally said

  332. to have been authored

  333. by Moses.

  334. We don't know that

  335. with great certainty,

  336. but traditionally,

  337. this is what

  338. the Jews of Jesus' day

  339. believed,

  340. that Moses was the author

  341. of Genesis,

  342. Exodus,

  343. Leviticus,

  344. Numbers,

  345. and Deuteronomy

  346. called the Pentateuch.

  347. Third,

  348. this term,

  349. the law,

  350. was used

  351. to refer to

  352. the entire Old Testament.

  353. It was used

  354. very broadly

  355. in that sense.

  356. And fourth,

  357. this term,

  358. law,

  359. was also used

  360. to refer to

  361. those rabbinical

  362. traditions

  363. that I was

  364. mentioning previously.

  365. All of those

  366. extra interpretations

  367. out beyond

  368. God's inspired

  369. word.

  370. This

  371. is the teaching

  372. that Jesus

  373. is referring to

  374. in Matthew 15,

  375. 6,

  376. when he says,

  377. for the sake

  378. of your tradition,

  379. you have made

  380. void

  381. the word

  382. of God.

  383. So,

  384. it's used

  385. in a lot

  386. of ways

  387. and it's

  388. used

  389. very broadly.

  390. However,

  391. Jesus here says

  392. in verse 17,

  393. do not think

  394. that I have

  395. come to abolish

  396. the law

  397. or the prophets.

  398. And this

  399. phrase,

  400. the law

  401. and the prophets,

  402. Jesus here saying

  403. the law

  404. or the prophets,

  405. used roughly

  406. 15 times

  407. in the New Testament

  408. with slight

  409. variation,

  410. was always

  411. used to refer

  412. to the entirety

  413. of the Old Testament.

  414. To the entire

  415. thing.

  416. Those that we

  417. now have,

  418. we know as

  419. 39 books

  420. of the Old

  421. Testament.

  422. You see,

  423. beloved,

  424. Jesus had a

  425. very high

  426. view

  427. of his Bible.

  428. The part that we

  429. consider the Old

  430. Testament was

  431. the Bible

  432. of Jesus'

  433. day.

  434. And I want

  435. to show you

  436. that.

  437. I want you

  438. to be able

  439. to wrap

  440. your mind

  441. around.

  442. And this

  443. is a thing

  444. that you

  445. can help

  446. others with.

  447. How is it

  448. that we

  449. know

  450. this is

  451. the Scripture?

  452. We can have

  453. a great

  454. confidence

  455. in the Old

  456. Testament text

  457. because Jesus

  458. had a great

  459. confidence

  460. in the text.

  461. If we are

  462. followers of

  463. Jesus Christ,

  464. we believe

  465. his words,

  466. he said

  467. some astounding

  468. things about

  469. the Old

  470. Testament text.

  471. He quoted

  472. from every

  473. section of

  474. it almost

  475. countless

  476. times.

  477. Many,

  478. many,

  479. many times.

  480. He's referencing

  481. back,

  482. he's referencing

  483. back,

  484. he's referencing

  485. back.

  486. But there's

  487. this really,

  488. really astonishing

  489. thing that

  490. Jesus does

  491. in Luke

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  492. chapter 11.

  493. And I want

  494. you to turn

  495. there with

  496. me because

  497. I want

  498. you to see

  499. this.

  500. Mark,

  501. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  502. chapter 5.

  503. Turn to

  504. Luke chapter

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  505. 11.

  506. And I want

  507. to show

  508. you the

  509. Bible of

  510. Jesus'

  511. day.

  512. Luke 11,

  513. and we'll

  514. read verses

  515. 49 through

  516. 51.

  517. Now,

  518. I don't

  519. want you

  520. to wrap

  521. your mind

  522. into what

  523. Jesus is

  524. really teaching

  525. at this

  526. point,

  527. but he

  528. makes,

  529. as a

  530. proof to

  531. what he's

  532. trying to

  533. say about

  534. demanding

  535. justice for

  536. the prophets,

  537. an astounding

  538. thing that he

  539. does here.

  540. So,

  541. beginning

  542. of verse

  543. 49.

  544. Therefore,

  545. also the

  546. wisdom of

  547. God said,

  548. I will

  549. send them

  550. prophets

  551. and apostles,

  552. some of

  553. whom they

  554. will kill

  555. and persecute,

  556. so that the

  557. blood of all

  558. the prophets

  559. shed from the

  560. foundation of

  561. the world

  562. may be charged

  563. against this

  564. generation.

  565. From the

  566. blood of

  567. Abel to

  568. the blood

  569. of Zechariah

  570. who perished

  571. between the

  572. altar and

  573. the sanctuary,

  574. yes,

  575. I tell you,

  576. it will be

  577. required of

  578. this generation.

  579. So,

  580. he's

  581. indicting

  582. the

  583. generation

  584. for the

  585. blood of

  586. the

  587. prophets

  588. and he

  589. bookends

  590. the

  591. prophets

  592. between

  593. Abel

  594. and

  595. Zechariah,

  596. right?

  597. So,

  598. we have

  599. Abel

  600. who Jesus

  601. is claiming

  602. was the

  603. very first

  604. prophet.

  605. Most of us

  606. don't tend

  607. to think

  608. of him

  609. in these

  610. terms.

  611. However,

  612. Genesis 4.10

  613. and the

  614. Lord said

  615. to Cain,

  616. what have

  617. you done?

  618. The voice

  619. of your

  620. brother's

  621. blood

  622. is crying

  623. to me

  624. from the

  625. ground.

  626. Jesus

  627. says he

  628. was the

  629. very

  630. first

  631. martyred

  632. prophet.

  633. So,

  634. Abel

  635. is the

  636. one

  637. bookend,

  638. but then

  639. Zechariah?

  640. It would be

  641. really easy

  642. to read

  643. passages

  644. and I

  645. have no

  646. idea

  647. why Jesus

  648. puts

  649. Zechariah

  650. at the

  651. other end.

  652. Some of

  653. you might

  654. be thinking

  655. that he's

  656. using

  657. A to

  658. Z.

  659. This

  660. was not

  661. the

  662. alphabet

  663. of his

  664. day.

  665. I am

  666. sure

  667. that many

  668. American

  669. Bible

  670. readers

  671. have made

  672. that

  673. error.

  674. So,

  675. why then

  676. is

  677. Zechariah

  678. the

  679. bookend?

  680. This

  681. particular

  682. Zechariah,

  683. in fact,

  684. the bookend

  685. of the

  686. prophets

  687. that Jesus

  688. is here

  689. referring to.

  690. We see

  691. the martyrdom

  692. of Zechariah

  693. in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 24:20

  694. chapter 24

  695. verse 20

  696. and following.

  697. So,

  698. this is

  699. the Zechariah

  700. who perished

  701. between the

  702. altar and

  703. the sanctuary.

  704. It says,

  705. then the

  706. Spirit of

  707. God

  708. clothed

  709. Zechariah

  710. the son

  711. of Jehoiada

  712. the priest

  713. and he

  714. stood

  715. above

  716. the

  717. people

  718. and said

  719. to them,

  720. thus says

  721. God,

  722. why do you

  723. break the

  724. commandments

  725. of the

  726. Lord

  727. so that

  728. you

  729. cannot

  730. prosper?

  731. Because

  732. you

  733. have

  734. forsaken

  735. the

  736. Lord,

  737. he

  738. has

  739. forsaken

  740. you.

  741. And then

  742. verse 21,

  743. but they

  744. conspired

  745. against him

  746. and by

  747. command

  748. of the

  749. king,

  750. they

  751. stoned

  752. him

  753. with

  754. stones

  755. in

  756. the

  757. court

  758. of

  759. the

  760. house

  761. of

  762. the

  763. Lord.

  764. Okay,

  765. so this

  766. is

  767. Zechariah

  768. in

  769. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 24 chapter mention

  770. chapter

  771. 24.

  772. If you're

  773. with us

  774. week,

  775. didn't

  776. you?

  777. Now,

  778. chronologically,

  779. in real

  780. time,

  781. the last

  782. martyr was

  783. Uriah,

  784. whose death

  785. is described

  786. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 26 chapter mention

  787. chapter

  788. 26.

  789. Chronologically,

  790. so,

  791. Abel

  792. to Zechariah?

  793. Why does

  794. Jesus do

  795. this?

  796. The

  797. Jewish

  798. Bible

  799. of

  800. Jesus'

  801. day

  802. was

  803. ordered

  804. differently

  805. than

  806. ours.

  807. Our

  808. Old

  809. Testament

  810. is

  811. grouped

  812. by

  813. literary

  814. type.

  815. That

  816. can be

  817. confusing

  818. sometimes

  819. as you're

  820. trying to

  821. read through

  822. the

  823. narrative.

  824. You

  825. can't

  826. read

  827. from

  828. Genesis

  829. 1-1

  830. to the

  831. end

  832. of the

  833. Old

  834. Testament

  835. and

  836. have

  837. it

  838. make

  839. a lot

  840. of

  841. sense

  842. because

  843. it's

  844. grouped

  845. differently

  846. than

  847. the

  848. order

  849. in

  850. which

  851. it

  852. was

  853. written.

  854. Jesus'

  855. Bible

  856. was

  857. entirely

  858. different.

  859. 1

  860. and

  861. 2

  862. Chronicles

  863. were

  864. one

  865. book,

  866. the

  867. book

  868. of

  869. Chronicles,

  870. and it

  871. was

  872. written

  873. as an

  874. overview

  875. of

  876. Israel's

  877. history,

  878. so it's

  879. looking back

  880. over

  881. Israel's

  882. history,

  883. with a

  884. particular

  885. emphasis

  886. on

  887. David

  888. and the

  889. temple.

  890. Rightly

  891. understood,

  892. the book

  893. of Chronicles

  894. was at

  895. the end

  896. of the

  897. Jewish

  898. Old

  899. Testament

  900. because

  901. it was

  902. meant

  903. to point

  904. us to,

  905. and God's

  906. people then

  907. to,

  908. a

  909. better

  910. David

  911. and a

  912. better

  913. worship

  914. that's

  915. found

  916. in

  917. the

  918. Messiah,

  919. Jesus

  920. Christ.

  921. That's

  922. why it's

  923. ordered

  924. in

  925. that

  926. way.

  927. Honestly,

  928. it's

  929. a

  930. better

  931. order,

  932. and it's

  933. why our

  934. Bible

  935. reading plan

  936. took us

  937. through

  938. the

  939. scripture

  940. in

  941. that

  942. way.

  943. So,

  944. in

  945. Luke

  946. 11,

  947. he's

  948. speaking

  949. to a

  950. Jewish

  951. audience

  952. when he

  953. says,

  954. from

  955. the

  956. blood

  957. of

  958. Abel

  959. to

  960. the

  961. blood

  962. of

  963. Zechariah,

  964. he

  965. knows

  966. that they

  967. have

  968. in their

  969. hand,

  970. they

  971. have

  972. been

  973. reading

  974. and

  975. reading

  976. taught

  977. the

  978. first

  979. prophet

  980. to

  981. the

  982. last

  983. prophet

  984. in

  985. the

  986. text.

  987. You

  988. see what

  989. he's

  990. done?

  991. He

  992. has

  993. now

  994. bookended

  995. their

  996. Old

  997. Testament,

  998. which

  999. is

  1000. ours,

  1001. now

  1002. organized

  1003. into

  1004. 39

  1005. books

  1006. and

  1007. rearranged

  1008. for

  1009. literary

  1010. type,

  1011. but he

  1012. is affirming

  1013. that all

  1014. of those

  1015. writers

  1016. in between

  1017. were

  1018. prophets.

  1019. This

  1020. was

  1021. his

  1022. Bible.

  1023. It's

  1024. incredible.

  1025. It's

  1026. an

  1027. incredible

  1028. case.

  1029. Luke

    Luke 11:49

  1030. chapter

  1031. 11

  1032. verse

  1033. 49

  1034. and

  1035. following

  1036. can

  1037. serve

  1038. you

  1039. in

  1040. that

  1041. way.

  1042. So

  1043. it

  1044. is

  1045. this

  1046. Bible

  1047. when

  1048. Jesus

  1049. says

  1050. I

  1051. do

  1052. not

  1053. come

  1054. to

  1055. abolish

  1056. the

  1057. law

  1058. or

  1059. the

  1060. prophets

  1061. that

  1062. Jesus

  1063. is

  1064. talking

  1065. about.

  1066. Now

  1067. the

  1068. Greek

  1069. word

  1070. here

  1071. translated

  1072. abolish

  1073. is a

  1074. strong

  1075. word.

  1076. It

  1077. means

  1078. to

  1079. tear

  1080. down,

  1081. to

  1082. demolish,

  1083. to

  1084. destroy

  1085. utterly.

  1086. It

  1087. is the

  1088. very same

  1089. Greek

  1090. word that

  1091. Jesus

  1092. uses in

  1093. saying

  1094. in

  1095. Matthew

    Matthew 26:61

  1096. 26

  1097. verse

  1098. 61

  1099. I

  1100. am

  1101. able

  1102. to

  1103. destroy

  1104. the

  1105. temple

  1106. of

  1107. God

  1108. and

  1109. to

  1110. rebuild

  1111. !

  1112. It

  1113. in

  1114. three

  1115. days.

  1116. That

  1117. strong

  1118. language

  1119. of

  1120. destroy

  1121. in

  1122. English

  1123. is the

  1124. very

  1125. same

  1126. word

  1127. here

  1128. translated

  1129. abolish.

  1130. Jesus

  1131. is saying

  1132. I

  1133. did

  1134. not

  1135. come

  1136. to

  1137. tear

  1138. down

  1139. to

  1140. utterly

  1141. destroy

  1142. God's

  1143. word.

  1144. Rather

  1145. what

  1146. he does

  1147. and what

  1148. he does

  1149. for us

  1150. in the

  1151. rest of

  1152. the

  1153. Sermon

  1154. on

  1155. the

  1156. Mount

  1157. and

  1158. in

  1159. the

  1160. rest

  1161. of

  1162. the

  1163. gospel

  1164. accounts

  1165. is

  1166. he

  1167. clarifies

  1168. he

  1169. explains

  1170. right

  1171. he

  1172. helps

  1173. to

  1174. get

  1175. a

  1176. right

  1177. understanding

  1178. of

  1179. God's

  1180. law

  1181. in

  1182. our

  1183. mind

  1184. and

  1185. in

  1186. theirs

  1187. in

  1188. that

  1189. day.

  1190. In

  1191. fact

  1192. there's

  1193. a

  1194. pretty

  1195. stark

  1196. theme

  1197. that

  1198. emerges

  1199. throughout

  1200. chapter

  1201. 5

  1202. of

  1203. this

  1204. you

  1205. have

  1206. heard

  1207. that

  1208. it

  1209. was

  1210. said

  1211. but

  1212. I

  1213. say

  1214. to

  1215. you

  1216. you

  1217. have

  1218. heard

  1219. he's

  1220. referring

  1221. to

  1222. the

  1223. traditions

  1224. he's

  1225. referring

  1226. to

  1227. the

  1228. wrong

  1229. interpretations

  1230. of

  1231. the

  1232. law

  1233. you

  1234. have

  1235. heard

  1236. it

  1237. was

  1238. said

  1239. he'll

  1240. follow

  1241. that

  1242. with

  1243. something

  1244. but

  1245. I

  1246. say

  1247. to

  1248. you

  1249. and

  1250. he

  1251. brings

  1252. the

  1253. clarification

  1254. what

  1255. the

  1256. law

  1257. was

  1258. actually

  1259. meant

  1260. to

  1261. command

  1262. us

  1263. to

  1264. and

  1265. you

  1266. can

  1267. see

  1268. this

  1269. again

  1270. and

  1271. again

  1272. and

  1273. again

  1274. chapter

  1275. 5

  1276. verse

  1277. 21

  1278. you

  1279. have

  1280. heard

  1281. it

  1282. was

  1283. said

  1284. in

  1285. verse

  1286. 22

  1287. but

  1288. I

  1289. say

  1290. to

  1291. you

  1292. 27

  1293. and

  1294. then

  1295. 28

  1296. chapter

  1297. 5

  1298. chapter

  1299. 5

  1300. verse

  1301. 31

  1302. this

  1303. time

  1304. it

  1305. was

  1306. also

  1307. said

  1308. then

  1309. verse

  1310. 32

  1311. but

  1312. I

  1313. say

  1314. to

  1315. you

  1316. and

  1317. then

  1318. in

  1319. verse

  1320. 33

  1321. and

  1322. 34

  1323. 38

  1324. and

  1325. 39

  1326. 43

  1327. and

  1328. 44

  1329. so

  1330. he's

  1331. just

  1332. bringing

  1333. he's

  1334. not

  1335. abolishing

  1336. he's

  1337. bringing

  1338. a

  1339. clarification

  1340. he's

  1341. helping

  1342. God's

  1343. people

  1344. to

  1345. understand

  1346. what

  1347. God's

  1348. word

  1349. always

  1350. meant

  1351. he had

  1352. a very

  1353. high

  1354. view

  1355. of the

  1356. scripture

  1357. it

  1358. is

  1359. authoritative

  1360. Matthew

  1361. 4

  1362. 4

  1363. Jesus

  1364. being

  1365. tempted

  1366. by the

  1367. devil

  1368. responds

  1369. it

  1370. is

  1371. written

  1372. man

  1373. shall

  1374. not

  1375. live

  1376. by bread

  1377. alone

  1378. but

  1379. by

  1380. every

  1381. word

  1382. that

  1383. comes

  1384. from

  1385. the

  1386. mouth

  1387. of

  1388. God

  1389. he

  1390. there

  1391. affirms

  1392. for

  1393. us

  1394. that

  1395. it

  1396. is

  1397. by

  1398. our

  1399. very

  1400. living

  1401. that

  1402. the

  1403. scripture

  1404. speaks

  1405. to

  1406. you

  1407. and

  1408. he

  1409. goes

  1410. on

  1411. to

  1412. say

  1413. in

  1414. verse

  1415. 18

  1416. for

  1417. truly

  1418. I

  1419. say

  1420. to

  1421. you

  1422. until

  1423. heaven

  1424. and

  1425. earth

  1426. pass

  1427. away

  1428. not

  1429. an

  1430. iota

  1431. not

  1432. a

  1433. dot

  1434. will

  1435. pass

  1436. from

  1437. the

  1438. law

  1439. until

  1440. all

  1441. is

  1442. accomplished

  1443. now

  1444. iota

  1445. was the

  1446. smallest

  1447. letter

  1448. of the

  1449. greek

  1450. alphabet

  1451. and

  1452. a

  1453. dot

  1454. was

  1455. the

  1456. smallest

  1457. part

  1576. paul exhorts

  1577. !

  1578. timothy

  1579. paul's

  1580. last letter

  1581. that he

  1582. wrote

  1587. the

  1591. so much

  1592. of second

  1593. timothy

  1605. son

  1606. timothy

  1607. he

  1608. says

  1609. all

  1610. scripture

  1611. in

  1612. second

  1613. timothy

  1614. 3

  1615. 16

  1617. 17

  1618. all

  1619. scripture

  1620. here

  1621. paul's

  1622. referring

  1623. to

  1624. what

  1625. our

  1627. testament

  1628. the

  1630. and

  1631. the

  1633. all

  1634. scripture

  1635. is

  1636. breathed

  1637. out

  1638. by

  1639. god

  1640. and

  1641. profitable

  1642. for

  1643. teaching

  1644. for

  1645. reproof

  1646. for

  1647. correction

  1648. and

  1649. for

  1650. training

  1651. in

  1661. equipped

  1662. for

  1663. every

  1664. good

  1665. work

  1666. so

  1667. paul

  1668. simply

  1669. comes

  1670. alongside

  1671. jesus

  1672. and

  1673. unites

  1674. with

  1675. christ

  1676. in

  1677. his

  1678. high

  1679. view

  1680. of

  1681. the

  1682. bible

  1683. not

  1684. only

  1685. did

  1686. jesus

  1687. claim

  1688. that

  1689. the

  1690. scripture

  1691. is

  1692. authoritative

  1693. but

  1694. he also

  1695. claimed

  1696. that

  1697. he

  1698. is

  1699. the

  1700. authority

  1701. of

  1702. the

  1703. scripture

  1704. he

  1705. says

  1706. verse

  1707. 17

  1708. do

  1709. not

  1710. think

  1711. that

  1712. i've

  1713. come

  1714. to

  1715. abolish

  1716. the

  1717. law

  1718. or

  1719. the

  1720. prophets

  1721. i

  1722. have

  1723. not

  1724. come

  1725. to

  1726. abolish

  1727. them

  1728. but

  1729. to

  1730. fulfill

  1731. them

  1732. we

  1733. will

  1734. talk

  1735. about

  1736. this

  1737. quite

  1738. a bit

  1739. in the

  1740. coming

  1741. weeks

  1742. but

  1743. in

  1744. brief

  1745. to

  1746. fulfill

  1747. as

  1748. some

  1749. have

  1750. suggested

  1751. does

  1752. not

  1753. mean

  1754. to

  1755. fill

  1756. out

  1757. as

  1758. if

  1759. something

  1760. were

  1761. lacking

  1762. right

  1763. that

  1764. he

  1765. fulfilled

  1766. the

  1767. law

  1768. and

  1769. the

  1770. prophets

  1771. by

  1772. his

  1773. teaching

  1774. they

  1775. were

  1776. already

  1777. inerrant

  1778. already

  1779. complete

  1780. already

  1781. sufficient

  1782. already

  1783. authoritative

  1784. his

  1785. teaching

  1786. is

  1787. clarifying

  1788. helping

  1789. us

  1790. to

  1791. understand

  1792. that

  1793. the

  1794. word

  1795. of

  1796. God

  1797. is

  1798. it

  1799. links

  1800. up

  1801. old

  1802. and

  1803. new

  1804. beautifully

  1805. together

  1806. this is not

  1807. what's meant

  1808. by this

  1809. he didn't

  1810. he didn't

  1811. fill it

  1812. out

  1813. he

  1814. filled

  1815. it up

  1816. he

  1817. fulfilled

  1818. it

  1819. jesus

  1820. fulfilled

  1821. the old

  1822. testament

  1823. by

  1824. being

  1825. its

  1826. fulfillment

  1827. all

  1828. of the

  1829. old

  1830. testament

  1831. points

  1832. to

  1833. jesus

  1834. and

  1835. he

  1836. embodies

  1837. the

  1838. obedience

  1839. required

  1840. by the

  1841. old

  1842. testament

  1843. law

  1844. and

  1845. the

  1846. devotion

  1847. to

  1848. god

  1849. that

  1850. the

  1851. prophets

  1852. called

  1853. god's

  1854. people

  1855. to

  1856. we're

  1857. going to

  1858. have to

  1859. spend

  1860. some more

  1861. time

  1862. on that

  1863. a great

  1864. deal

  1865. of

  1866. time

  1867. in

  1868. fact

  1869. on

  1870. the

  1871. meaning

  1872. of

  1873. this

  1874. word

  1875. and

  1876. we'll

  1877. get

  1878. into

  1879. that

  1880. next

  1881. week

  1882. but

  1883. for

  1884. now

  1885. I

  1886. want

  1887. you

  1888. to

  1889. turn

  1890. your

  1891. attention

  1892. again

  1893. to

  1894. the

  1895. astounding

  1896. phrase

  1897. I

  1898. say

  1899. to

  1900. you

  1901. so

  1902. I

  1903. know

  1904. I'm

  1905. skipping

  1906. a

  1907. stone

  1908. off

  1909. the

  1910. surface

  1911. when

  1912. I

  1913. simply

  1914. say

  1915. Jesus

  1916. fulfilled

  1917. that's

  1918. what

  1919. he

  1920. said

  1921. right

  1922. the

  1923. law

  1924. and

  1925. the

  1926. prophets

  1927. we'll

  1928. spend

  1929. much

  1930. time

  1931. on

  1932. that

  1933. next

  1934. week

  1935. but

  1936. look

  1937. now

  1938. at

  1939. the

  1940. phrase

  1941. I

  1942. say

  1943. to

  1944. you

  1945. who

  1946. does

  1947. this

  1948. Jesus

  1949. think

  1950. that

  1951. he

  1952. is

  1953. no

  1954. one

  1955. can

  1956. use

  1957. language

  1958. like

  1959. this

  1960. no

  1961. one

  1962. did

  1963. use

  1964. language

  1965. like

  1966. this

  1967. it

  1968. would

  1969. have

  1970. been

  1971. the

  1972. greatest

  1973. of

  1974. blasphemies

  1975. !

  1976. The

  1977. prophets

  1978. would

  1979. say

  1980. not

  1981. I

  1982. say

  1983. to

  1984. you

  1985. but

  1986. what

  1987. thus

  1988. says

  1989. the

  1990. Lord

  1991. an

  1992. example

  1993. in

  1994. Moses

  1995. Exodus

  1996. 11

  1997. and

  1998. verse

  1999. 4

  2000. thus

  2001. says

  2002. the

  2003. Lord

  2004. I

  2005. am

  2006. merely

  2007. creation

  2008. I

  2009. am

  2010. merely

  2011. a

  2012. pin

  2013. God

  2014. has

  2015. spoken

  2016. let

  2017. me

  2018. tell

  2019. you

  2020. what

  2021. he

  2022. has

  2023. said

  2024. Jesus

  2025. does

  2026. not

  2027. say

  2028. you

  2029. have

  2030. heard

  2031. it

  2032. said

  2033. but

  2034. the

  2035. Lord

  2036. says

  2037. to

  2038. you

  2039. but

  2040. rather

  2041. I

  2042. say

  2043. to

  2044. you

  2045. if

  2046. Jesus

  2047. is

  2048. not

  2049. God

  2050. this

  2051. is

  2052. absolutely

  2053. the

  2054. most

  2055. audacious

  2056. of

  2057. offenses

  2058. to

  2059. God

  2060. we

  2061. never

  2062. get

  2063. to

  2064. say

  2065. I

  2066. say

  2067. to

  2068. you

  2069. the

  2070. power

  2071. of

  2072. preaching

  2073. is

  2074. found

  2075. in

  2076. simply

  2077. explaining

  2078. what

  2079. God

  2080. has

  2081. said

  2082. I

  2083. have

  2084. nothing

  2085. to

  2086. add

  2087. to

  2088. or

  2089. take

  2090. away

  2091. from

  2092. this

  2093. word

  2094. my

  2095. job

  2096. is

  2097. to

  2098. say

  2099. thus

  2100. says

  2101. the

  2102. Lord

  2103. Jesus

  2104. says

  2105. I

  2106. say

  2107. to

  2108. you

  2109. praise

  2110. the

  2111. Lord

  2112. because

  2113. Jesus

  2114. is

  2115. God

  2116. he

  2117. has

  2118. the

  2119. right

  2120. to

  2121. bring

  2122. clarity

  2123. to

  2124. the

  2125. law

  2126. of

  2127. God

  2128. and

  2129. we

  2130. would

  2131. all

  2132. do

  2133. well

  2134. to

  2135. listen

  2136. to

  2137. him
