  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word, which I hope you have with you, that it's well read and treasured in your heart this morning and turn with me to the book of Proverbs chapter 1.

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  2. This morning we're taking a break from our verse by verse exposition of the sermon on the mount from Matthew chapter 5 through 7.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  3. We've been working up to Matthew 5, 17 through 20. We've began to talk about the law and the gospel.

  4. And I kind of charged into that whole thing, not really stopping to consider that today was Mother's Day.

  5. And so this week I went, you know, let's not talk about the law and gospel from Matthew 5, 17 through 20 and Exodus 20 this morning.

  6. But let's take a little time to consider all that it means to be a mother.

  7. It is my intention today to be an encouragement to the mothers of our congregation by reminding you of your high calling in Jesus Christ.

  8. You may find some challenge in God's Word to us this morning.

  9. But I want you to know that I believe that the mothers of our church work very hard to excel in their disciple making.

  10. And this does not go unnoticed.

  11. I am proud of each and every one of you.

  12. I know that your job as mothers can often seem mundane and unending and that it is always exhausting.

  13. And so I want to encourage you to persist by grace to train up your children as God will use you to yield fruit in their lives.

  14. So with that in mind, let's take a look at Proverbs 1, verses 7 through 9.

    Proverbs 1:7–9

  15. Before I read, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  16. It was written for His glory and our good.

  17. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  18. Proverbs 1, verse 7.

    Proverbs 1:7

  19. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

  20. Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

  21. Hear, my son, your father's instruction and forsake not your mother's teaching.

  22. For they are a graceful garland to your head and pendants for your neck.

  23. This morning I want to draw your attention to five observations from Proverbs 1, 7 through 9 in brief.

  24. At least that's my plan.

  25. I know sometimes I plan that and it doesn't go according to plan.

  26. But that is my plan both because I know most, at least many of us, have lots of afternoon things to take care of.

  27. But also, and I'll ask for prayer on your behalf, I just don't feel well this morning.

  28. I've had a morning where I thought I could go back to bed at any time here.

  29. So we'll see how this goes.

  30. You know how I get when I get into the points sometimes.

  31. So, in attempt, five observations from Proverbs 1, 7 through 9.

  32. Number one, God is the originator of the family.

  33. God created the family.

  34. Solomon is the book of Proverbs author.

  35. The wisdom that he speaks of throughout the book is a wisdom founded in the fear of the Lord.

  36. So, he leads his teaching out in chapter 1 with these words from verse 7.

  37. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

  38. Which fools despise this knowledge, the wisdom and the instruction that will follow in the books.

  39. And he begins his instruction with a most important note concerning the source of wisdom.

  40. The family.

  41. He instructs his son to hear his father's instruction and to not abandon his mother's teaching.

  42. So, God in his loving kindness towards mankind created the family.

  43. We read in Genesis chapter 1 verses 27 and 28.

    Genesis 1:27

  44. So, God created man in his own image.

  45. In the image of God, he created him male and female.

  46. He created them.

  47. And God blessed them.

  48. And God said to them, be fruitful and multiply.

  49. Have children.

  50. And fill the earth.

  51. And subdue it.

  52. And have dominion over fish of the sea and birds of the air.

  53. And over the heavens.

  54. Every living thing that moves on the earth.

  55. God gives to them this multiplying mandate.

  56. And we come to further understand, as is noted for us in Genesis 2.24,

  57. that there's a unit that's created here.

  58. Right?

  59. Moses writes in Genesis 2.24,

  60. Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife,

  61. and they shall become one flesh.

  62. And so, God created this institution of family,

  63. and we create, as we multiply and marry, families.

  64. Right?

  65. We continue to portion ourselves off and create families.

  66. The family was and is meant to be an institution itself with God-mandated responsibilities.

  67. So, second observation.

  68. So, first observation, God is the originator of the family.

  69. Secondly, the family was designed by God to be a school.

  70. The family was designed by God to be a school.

  71. Again, in verse 8.

  72. Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not, don't abandon, your mother's teaching.

  73. Beyond today's text,

  74. let's note together some other places in the Scripture

  75. where God instructs parents to instruct their children,

  76. like Deuteronomy 6, verses 4-7.

    Deuteronomy 6:4–7

  77. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  78. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  79. and with all your soul, and with all your might.

  80. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

  81. You shall teach them diligently to your children,

  82. and shall talk of them when you sit in your house,

  83. and when you walk by the way,

  84. and when you lie down,

  85. and when you rise.

  86. Right?

  87. There's a fervency about the teaching,

  88. and there's an ongoing teaching about the ways of God to our children.

  89. Also, in Ephesians 6, verse 4,

    Ephesians 6:4

  90. fathers, do not provoke your children to anger,

  91. but bring them up in the discipline,

  92. the training, and instruction of the Lord.

  93. Right here in Ephesians 6,

  94. Paul places the emphasis of raising children on fathers as the head of the household,

  95. but this does not exclude mothers as they are helpers of the fathers in this task.

  96. And the Bible instructs children to be students.

  97. So then it follows that the family, the home, is a school.

  98. Not only in today's text,

  99. but also in places like Proverbs 23, verse 22.

    Proverbs 23:22

  100. Listen to your father who gave you life,

  101. and do not despise your mother when she is old.

  102. And Ephesians 6, verse 1.

    Ephesians 6:1

  103. Children, obey your parents in the Lord,

  104. for this is right.

  105. Get your children to memorize that and repeat it back to you often.

  106. So, the family was designed by God to be a school,

  107. to be a place of instruction in the ways of God for our children.

  108. This is why many of us,

  109. I venture to say all of us,

  110. but I don't want to err in that way,

  111. but many of us in this church believe in the benefits of homeschooling, right?

  112. Because it creates such good opportunity for this very thing.

  113. But however our children receive their educations,

  114. the responsibility of teaching them

  115. to have a proper fear of the Lord

  116. falls to parents,

  117. and it is not a responsibility that can be given to anyone else.

  118. Third,

  119. the fear of the Lord is meant to be the theme of the family's curriculum.

  120. The fear of the Lord is meant to be the theme of the family's curriculum.

  121. And it's the reality that ties all things we teach our children together.

  122. Again, in verse 7,

  123. the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

  124. It's the prerequisite course of knowledge, right?

  125. It should infiltrate everything our children learn

  126. so that they have a right and proper worldview.

  127. All education has,

  128. at its foundation,

  129. a worldview.

  130. We are teaching our children something about the world

  131. even by not talking about God.

  132. Our education these days,

  133. our public school education,

  134. I'm okay if you're a fan of public school education,

  135. I love our public school teachers

  136. that are part of our church

  137. and for the work that you're doing,

  138. but has at its foundation

  139. secular humanism, right?

  140. By not talking about God at all

  141. and by suggesting that education

  142. is the answer to all of your problems,

  143. you build a worldview for your children, right?

  144. All education has to sit on a base of something.

  145. The Christian family is to be sure

  146. that the fear of the Lord

  147. is set as the base

  148. for all other education.

  149. Now, this phrase, fear of the Lord,

  150. does not mean that we are working

  151. to send our children towering from God.

  152. It carries rather the idea

  153. of reverence and humility.

  154. A child that fears the Lord

  155. will recognize

  156. that they are a created being

  157. and they live in a created world

  158. and will, as such is true,

  159. desire to live in accord

  160. with the creator and sustainer

  161. of that created world.

  162. Right?

  163. They will see that it's all built upon

  164. the fact, the reality,

  165. that God created this world

  166. and intends to rule over it

  167. as its good king.

  168. They will see the world's goodness

  169. under God's rule

  170. and they will also see

  171. the world's brokenness

  172. in rejection of God

  173. as king.

  174. Let me show you the importance

  175. of such a theme

  176. from a couple of psalms.

  177. So, Psalm 31 and verse 19.

  178. The psalmist says,

  179. Oh, how abundant is your goodness,

  180. which you have stored up

  181. for those who fear you

  182. and work for those

  183. who take refuge in you.

  184. Psalm 112 and verse 1.

  185. The psalmist writes,

  186. Praise the Lord.

  187. Blessed is the man

  188. who fears the Lord.

  189. Blessed, doing well

  190. as the man who fears the Lord,

  191. who greatly delights

  192. in the Lord's commandments.

  193. And Psalm 115 and verse 13.

  194. The Lord will bless those

  195. who fear the Lord,

  196. both the small and the great.

  197. So, there is a promise

  198. of goodness and blessing

  199. from God to those who fear Him

  200. and want to follow in His ways.

  201. We want our children

  202. to be declared by God

  203. blessed.

  204. And building all that we do

  205. in instructing our children

  206. on this fear of the Lord,

  207. letting it be the foundation,

  208. ultimately,

  209. has its final good

  210. in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  211. If our children are humbled

  212. because of their sin and parents,

  213. we have so many opportunities

  214. to teach them about their sin.

  215. And they are amazed

  216. at the magnificent holiness of God.

  217. They will want to know

  218. the good news of Jesus Christ.

  219. We create for them the problem.

  220. We don't create a problem.

  221. We create for them the problem.

  222. It is a problem that exists.

  223. They are born in sin.

  224. As Voddie Bauckham likes to say,

  225. do you know why babies are so small?

  226. It is because if they were any larger,

  227. they would kill you.

  228. We have seen the rage

  229. in our young ones.

  230. They are sinful from birth.

  231. Reject the good rule of God as king.

  232. If they did not,

  233. they would listen to the loving kind,

  234. help and instruction of their parents.

  235. If they do not,

  236. they transgress the fifth commandment

  237. from day one.

  238. We want to show them

  239. their great need

  240. of a Savior,

  241. Jesus Christ.

  242. They need to put on

  243. His righteousness

  244. before God.

  245. John Piper,

  246. in a sermon on this very text,

  247. said,

  248. the family isn't just a place

  249. where children learn

  250. to hold spoons

  251. and walk on two feet

  252. and say please

  253. and tie shoes

  254. and read

  255. and look both ways

  256. and cut grass

  257. and put on makeup

  258. and drive a car.

  259. The family is where

  260. all of this and more

  261. begins in God,

  262. is guided by God's Word

  263. and is shown to be

  264. for the glory of God.

  265. The fear of God,

  266. the reverencing of God,

  267. the standing in awe of God,

  268. the trusting of God

  269. is what families are for.

  270. So that was the third point.

  271. The fear of the Lord

  272. is meant to be the theme

  273. of the family's curriculum.

  274. Fourthly,

  275. both father and mother

  276. are responsible for teaching.

  277. Verse 8,

  278. the son is instructed

  279. to hear his father's instruction

  280. and to not abandon

  281. his mother's teaching.

  282. Solomon tells his son

  283. to heed the teaching

  284. of both his father

  285. and his mother.

  286. in the normative family,

  287. both exist.

  288. And both work

  289. to the great end

  290. of teaching children

  291. to fear the Lord.

  292. But in a world of death

  293. and severed relationship,

  294. not all families

  295. are normative.

  296. Some children are raised

  297. by single mothers

  298. and there is grace

  299. for this.

  300. Some children are raised

  301. by single fathers

  302. and there is grace.

  303. Probably extra measures

  304. of grace for this.

  305. Some children do not have

  306. God-fearing parents

  307. or one who is

  308. and one who is not.

  309. And there is grace

  310. for this.

  311. And most regularly,

  312. the means of said grace

  313. is the church

  314. called together

  315. as a faith family.

  316. God employs

  317. the efforts

  318. of the church

  319. to aid us

  320. in raising

  321. children.

  322. And I want to show you

  323. this manifold grace

  324. from the life

  325. of Timothy.

  326. Timothy's father

  327. was a Greek

  328. and not a follower

  329. of Jesus Christ

  330. by all that we can tell.

  331. Most likely.

  332. Maybe he converted

  333. at a later age.

  334. But the way Paul writes

  335. concerning Timothy's father

  336. doesn't appear

  337. that he was.

  338. But Paul tells us

  339. in 2 Timothy 1

  340. and verse 5

  341. as he's writing

  342. to Timothy,

  343. he says,

  344. I am reminded

  345. of your sincere faith.

  346. The faith

  347. that dwelt first

  348. in your grandmother Lois

  349. and your mother Eunice.

  350. And now,

  351. I am sure,

  352. dwells in you as well.

  353. And then further instructs

  354. Timothy in 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:14

  355. verses 14 and 15.

  356. But as for you,

  357. continue in what you have learned

  358. and have firmly believed,

  359. knowing from whom

  360. you learned it.

  361. And how from childhood

  362. you have been acquainted

  363. with the sacred writings

  364. which are able

  365. to make you wise

  366. for salvation

  367. through faith

  368. in Jesus Christ.

  369. Timothy finding himself

  370. as a prominent Christian leader

  371. in the Ephesian church

  372. owes so much

  373. to God's grace

  374. to him

  375. through his grandmother

  376. and his mother.

  377. So God having great grace

  378. to Timothy

  379. and giving great grace

  380. to Lois and Eunice,

  381. God also gave great grace

  382. in giving Timothy

  383. a spiritual father.

  384. It would seem

  385. that his biological father

  386. was not this for him.

  387. But in 1 Timothy 1,

  388. the beginning of verse 2,

  389. Paul addresses his first letter

  390. to Timothy

  391. with these words.

  392. To Timothy,

  393. my true child

  394. in the faith.

  395. It would seem

  396. that there was

  397. some kind of

  398. spiritual adoption

  399. on Paul's mind here.

  400. He was willing

  401. to father Timothy

  402. in the faith.

  403. And Paul tells us

  404. that he instructed Timothy

  405. in the way of the Lord

  406. in 2 Timothy 3,

    2 Timothy 3:10

  407. verse 10,

  408. and the first part

  409. of verse 11,

  410. where he writes,

  411. You, however,

  412. have followed

  413. my teaching,

  414. my conduct,

  415. my aim in life,

  416. my faith,

  417. my patience,

  418. my love,

  419. my steadfastness,

  420. my persecutions,

  421. and sufferings.

  422. Doesn't that sound

  423. like Deuteronomy 6?

  424. This teaching,

  425. passing on diligently

  426. to your children

  427. these commands.

  428. Dwelling on these things

  429. and the rising

  430. and the sitting in the house

  431. and the walking along

  432. the way

  433. Paul had instructed

  434. Timothy

  435. as a spiritual father.

  436. So today,

  437. I want to exhort

  438. childless women

  439. to have

  440. spiritual children.

  441. children.

  442. And I want to exhort

  443. women with children

  444. to have

  445. spiritual children.

  446. Train those

  447. younger than you

  448. in the faith

  449. and impart

  450. a fear of the Lord

  451. to someone

  452. else.

  453. We are meant

  454. to be disciple makers

  455. both within the house

  456. and without

  457. of the house.

  458. Mothers,

  459. you provide

  460. many necessary

  461. things

  462. for your children.

  463. You keep them

  464. clothed

  465. and fed,

  466. some better than others,

  467. but they are surviving.

  468. But your children

  469. do not need

  470. a perfectly clean house

  471. or the most exciting meals.

  472. They do need you

  473. and they need

  474. your careful instruction

  475. in Scripture.

  476. Make that the priority

  477. of your efforts.

  478. On your bulletin

  479. this morning

  480. is a Charles Spurgeon

  481. quote,

  482. as I like to do.

  483. I keep awaiting

  484. the jokes

  485. made about my

  486. Spurgeon quotes.

  487. You'll be a clever one

  488. if you can come up

  489. with good jokes

  490. concerning that.

  491. He wrote this,

  492. Fathers and mothers

  493. are the most natural

  494. agents for God

  495. to use

  496. in the salvation

  497. of their children.

  498. I am sure

  499. that in my early years

  500. no teaching

  501. ever made

  502. such an impression

  503. upon my mind

  504. as the instruction

  505. of my mother.

  506. And today

  507. you get a bonus

  508. Spurgeon quote.

  509. Those who think

  510. that a woman

  511. detained

  512. at home

  513. by her little family,

  514. so let me just repeat that.

  515. Those who think

  516. that a woman

  517. detained

  518. at home,

  519. busy,

  520. so busy,

  521. at home

  522. by her little family

  523. is doing nothing.

  524. Think the reverse

  525. of what

  526. is true.

  527. There is so

  528. much

  529. value,

  530. ladies,

  531. in the hard work

  532. you do

  533. the day in

  534. and the day out

  535. with your little ones.

  536. Fifth,

  537. children who obey

  538. their parents,

  539. heed their parents'

  540. instruction,

  541. are promised

  542. a reward.

  543. Verse 9,

  544. for they,

  545. and what

  546. Solomon is referring to,

  547. for they,

  548. your father's instruction

  549. and your mother's teaching,

  550. right,

  551. are a graceful

  552. garland for your head

  553. and pendants

  554. for your neck.

  555. To the Israelites'

  556. mind,

  557. no signs

  558. or badges

  559. of joy

  560. or glory

  561. were higher

  562. in worth

  563. than the garland

  564. around the head

  565. or the gold chain

  566. around the neck.

  567. They were worn

  568. by kings

  569. and they were worn

  570. by the favorites

  571. of kings.

  572. They were doled out

  573. by kings

  574. to honor

  575. people.

  576. This is the promise

  577. of a parent's

  578. instruction

  579. themed by the fear

  580. of the Lord.

  581. We must make

  582. that caveat,

  583. right?

  584. Parental instruction

  585. themed,

  586. held together

  587. by the fear

  588. of the Lord.

  589. The promise

  590. is

  591. the favor

  592. of the Lord.

  593. The fifth commandment

  594. found in Exodus 20

  595. and verse 12

  596. says,

  597. Honor your father

  598. and mother

  599. that your days

  600. may be long

  601. in the land

  602. that the Lord

  603. your God

  604. is giving you.

  605. In Proverbs

    Proverbs 14:26

  606. chapter 14

  607. verse 26 and 27

  608. says,

  609. In the fear

  610. of the Lord

  611. one has strong

  612. confidence

  613. and his children

  614. will have

  615. a refuge.

  616. The fear

  617. of the Lord

  618. is a fountain

  619. of life

  620. that one

  621. may turn away

  622. from the snares

  623. of death.

  624. And Proverbs

  625. 19 and verse 23,

  626. The fear

  627. of the Lord

  628. leads to life

  629. and whoever

  630. has it

  631. rests

  632. satisfied.

  633. He will

  634. not be visited

  635. by harm.

  636. And this is not

  637. wisdom

  638. for the

  639. day to day

  640. of harm

  641. and avoiding

  642. death.

  643. This is talking

  644. about eternal

  645. favor found

  646. in God

  647. by faith

  648. in Jesus Christ.

  649. And the teaching

  650. of the good news

  651. of Jesus Christ

  652. has its start

  653. at the very

  654. foundation

  655. in understanding

  656. who we are

  657. and who

  658. God

  659. is.

  660. We will see

  661. the great

  662. chasm

  663. fixed

  664. between us

  665. and be

  666. desirous

  667. to cross

  668. that chasm

  669. when we cross

  670. it by faith

  671. in Jesus Christ.

  672. And we want

  673. our children,

  674. we desperately

  675. want our children

  676. to cross

  677. that chasm

  678. with us.

  679. And so

  680. we see

  681. in brief

  682. from Proverbs

    Proverbs 1:7–9

  683. chapter 1

  684. verse 7

  685. through 9

  686. God is the

  687. originator

  688. of the family.

  689. The family

  690. was designed

  691. by God

  692. to be a school.

  693. The fear

  694. of the Lord

  695. is meant

  696. to be

  697. the theme

  698. of the

  699. family's

  700. curriculum.

  701. Both

  702. father and

  703. mother

  704. are responsible

  705. for teaching

  706. and children

  707. who obey

  708. their parents

  709. are promised

  710. a reward.

  711. And so

  712. beloved,

  713. let's take

  714. up the task

  715. of this

  716. great charge

  717. that's been

  718. given to us

  719. as those

  720. with kids

  721. and as

  722. part of

  723. a church

  724. that has

  725. children

  726. to preach

  727. the gospel

  728. well.

  729. To

  730. found

  731. everything

  732. that we

  733. do

  734. as

  735. families

  736. and

  737. with

  738. our

  739. children

  740. in

  741. the

  742. fear

  743. of the

  744. Lord.

  745. This

  746. reverence

  747. for who

  748. He is

  749. and how

  750. He intends

  751. for us

  752. to walk

  753. in the

  754. world.

  755. And let's

  756. do this

  757. from the

  758. joy of

  759. obedience

  760. and by

  761. grace.

  762. Let's pray

  763. together.
