  1. Covenant with the people of Israel by speaking to them of their deliverance from Egypt.

  2. ! He reminds them what he had done for them before he requires anything of them.

  3. ! Notice the initial phrase in verse 4.

  4. ! You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians.

  5. This phrase recalls God's judgment upon Egypt.

  6. It speaks to God's incomparable working of justice and of his wrath toward his enemies

  7. that Israel would fear God and hear his good commandments to them.

  8. It reminded them of the wrath of God that they had escaped.

  9. Secondly, the phrase, and how I bore you on eagles' wings,

  10. shows Israel's role in their deliverance as entirely passive.

  11. God's interpretation of his deliverance of Israel from the hands of the Egyptians

  12. does not run contrary to Israel's understanding of the same.

  13. They understood it was God who delivered us.

  14. We took no part in this.

  15. God has brought us out of Egypt.

  16. In Exodus chapter 15, Miriam sings to Israel of Israel's deliverance after crossing the Red Sea.

    Exodus 15 chapter mention

  17. And there is recorded for us, she sings,

  18. sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously.

  19. The horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.

  20. So they understood, right?

  21. It is God who judged Egypt.

  22. It is God who has delivered us from their hand.

  23. Thirdly, the phrase, and brought you to myself,

  24. teaches us that God did not save Israel for her own sake,

  25. but for a particular relationship with him.

  26. A relationship that he expounds upon in the following verses.

  27. Now, if we rightly understand the Exodus story,

  28. we find in it a foreshadowing of the deliverance to come.

  29. So we ought to, as those found in Christ,

  30. delivered from the death of sin to life in Christ,

  31. can connect here at this point with what God is saying to his people.

  32. Verse 5 begins with the phrase,

  33. Now, therefore.

  34. So, in response to my deliverance,

  35. because of who I am to you,

  36. here is who you are to be to me.

  37. God goes on to define Israel's calling.

  38. What it will mean for them to be God's people.

  39. So God begins with this reminder of his deliverance.

  40. I delivered you.

  41. I bore you on wings and I brought you to myself.

  42. And then he goes on to expect something of them.

  43. So grateful obedience.

  44. And he gives them this calling.

  45. And he first says,

  46. The Hebrew term translated in our text as treasured possession is used elsewhere in the Bible to refer to a king's personal wealth.

  47. Israel was to be a special people.

  48. A highly valued people among all peoples.

  49. God is saying,

  50. God is saying,

  51. I possess all peoples.

  52. And you are to be a special people for the sake of all peoples.

  53. And this idea is further developed in the next phrase at the beginning of verse 6.

  54. God says of Israel,

  55. And you shall be to me a kingdom of priests.

  56. The people of Israel as a whole were meant to fulfill priestly duties.

  57. It's a rather interesting Hebrew phrase.

  58. Both here this idea of kingdom of priests as well as later on in the verse, holy nation.

  59. These phrases are only found in this place in the Old Testament,

  60. which makes it difficult to translate and understand.

  61. We can also understand,

  62. and I think more rightly,

  63. rather than ESV rendering this kingdom of priests,

  64. a priestly kingdom.

  65. That they were as a whole meant to fulfill these priestly duties.

  66. The priests were to be representatives of the Lord to Israel.

  67. And the priests were meant to be representatives of Israel to the Lord.

  68. The presence and service of the priests made possible a relationship between God and Israel.

  69. And this is the way that Israel is meant to function for the peoples of the earth.

  70. And while not expressly stated here,

  71. from a broader understanding of the narrative of God's dealings and purposes for His people,

  72. we can know that Israel was meant to serve this way for all peoples to the ends of the earth.

  73. Recall, as a simple example, the story of God sending Jonah to the Ninevites to go and preach what?

  74. Repentance.

  75. Turn from your sins and turn to the one true God.

  76. Finally, God says that Israel is to be a holy nation.

  77. They were to be a people set apart in holy living as a nation amongst nations.

  78. If this were not coming from the mouth of the Lord Himself,

  79. it would seem so very blasphemous.

  80. But God is placing this calling on His people.

  81. He will give to them good commands.

  82. Commands that are not burdensome and aimed at their flourishing.

  83. Jesus repeats such an expectation of the citizens of the kingdom of heaven in Matthew 5 and verse 48,

  84. where He says,

  85. You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  86. perfect.

  87. So, God has a purpose for Israel,

  88. and it is a missionary purpose,

  89. to display His glory to the world in holy living.

  90. This is still God's purpose for His people.

  91. His purpose for us.

  92. And we can know this so clearly,

  93. because the Apostle Peter borrows language from the beginning of Exodus 19

  94. to make the expanded point to the church.

  95. In 1 Peter 2 and verse 9,

  96. He wrote,

  97. and I hope your brains are just already pinging to the cross reference,

  98. But you are a chosen race,

  99. a royal priesthood,

  100. a holy nation,

  101. a people for His own possession,

  102. that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him

  103. who called you out of darkness

  104. into His marvelous light.

  105. So, as those who have been made righteous in Christ,

  106. we are to be keepers of the law.

  107. Not obedient so that we will be accepted by God,

  108. but accepted by God,

  109. and therefore gratefully obedient.

  110. And we are to give all of ourselves to grateful obedience

  111. for the sake of God's glory amongst all peoples.

  112. This is why a study of Exodus 20 matters for the church.

  113. God expects of us whole person righteousness.

  114. A righteousness that we find ultimately in Christ.

  115. The one who was without sin,

  116. who kept the law perfectly,

  117. but yet,

  118. having been clothed in His righteousness,

  119. and left here on this earth,

  120. we are meant to pursue obedience for the sake of His name.

  121. Every bit, every bit of our being.

  122. This morning's Spurgeon quote on your bulletin,

  123. Spurgeon once said,

  124. Obedience rendered without delight in rendering it

  125. is only half obedience.

  126. God wants all of us given in worship to Him

  127. for the praise of His name amongst all peoples.

  128. So, with all of that in mind,

  129. let's look together at the first three commandments.

  130. We're going to do that

  131. by using a historical document.

  132. I mentioned it to you previously,

  133. and again, my sincerest apology

  134. if you don't have a bulletin in your hand

  135. with something stapled to the back of it.

  136. We're going to look at a number of the questions and answers

  137. from the Westminster Larger Catechism.

  138. I gave you some history of that in previous weeks.

  139. 1648 is when it was adopted.

  140. Now, I want to be clear.

  141. So, hear this please.

  142. Historic creeds, confessions, and catechisms

  143. are helpful to us,

  144. but only insofar as they are consistent

  145. with the Scriptures.

  146. I believe that the Westminster Larger Catechism

  147. on this matter is,

  148. and therefore,

  149. can give us a helpful framework

  150. for which to think through the law

  151. and our obedience to it.

  152. As we look at the following catechism questions,

  153. I will intersperse a bit of text

  154. that the Westminster divines

  155. employed in writing their answers,

  156. but we do not have time

  157. to proof out everything that they said.

  158. So, I want you to be encouraged

  159. to spend some more time with this document.

  160. I want you to see it in front of you read,

  161. and again, I'll try to read carefully

  162. if you don't have a copy of it in front of you,

  163. but spend some more time

  164. looking at this historic text

  165. and at God's inspired Word

  166. where they're pulling together

  167. this idea systematically for us.

  168. You can easily access copies

  169. of the Westminster Larger Catechism

  170. with all of the Scripture proofs online.

  171. Very simply.

  172. I would have loved to have included

  173. all the Scripture proofs for you on this,

  174. and I tried,

  175. but it was going to make eight pages

  176. instead of two.

  177. So, I retracted down

  178. to just the text

  179. that the Westminster divines wrote.

  180. I also want to remind you

  181. of a question and answer

  182. from the catechism

  183. that we discussed last week.

  184. Okay, so before we get into

  185. these present questions and answers,

  186. from last week,

  187. we looked at question 99,

  188. which just asked this,

  189. what rules are to be observed

  190. for the right understanding

  191. of the Ten Commandments?

  192. And the answer, in part,

  193. they say for the right understanding

  194. of the Ten Commandments,

  195. these rules are to be observed,

  196. and we talked about six of them.

  197. The third one is the one

  198. I want to remind you of,

  199. that one and the same thing

  200. in diverse respects

  201. is required or forbidden

  202. in several commandments.

  203. So, you're going to hear,

  204. as we look at these,

  205. some divergent commands,

  206. both for or against

  207. particular activity,

  208. and that's okay.

  209. It works out like a Venn diagram.

  210. There's some overlaps

  211. in some places,

  212. and you'll note that

  213. as we look at these matters together.

  214. Once again,

  215. we really could take

  216. on each of these commandments a week.

  217. We're going to tackle

  218. the first three today,

  219. Lord willing,

  220. the fourth commandment next Sunday,

  221. and then we'll try,

  222. we'll see the final six,

  223. the Lord's Day after that,

  224. and then we'll get back

  225. into the Sermon on the Mount following.

  226. So, the first question

  227. is question 103.

  228. Skip 102 for now.

  229. Question 103,

  230. which is simply,

  231. what is the first commandment?

  232. And we find this in verse 3.

  233. The first commandment is,

  234. you shall have no other gods before me.

  235. So, what does this mean?

  236. Question 104 begins to answer,

  237. what does the first commandment require?

  238. We're going to see both requirements

  239. and things being forbidden.

  240. The first commandment requires us

  241. to know and recognize God

  242. as the only true God

  243. and our God.

  244. 1 Chronicles 28,

  245. in verse 9,

  246. David says,

  247. And you, Solomon my son,

  248. know the God of your father

  249. and serve Him

  250. with a whole heart

  251. and with a willing mind.

  252. For the Lord searches all hearts

  253. and understands every plan and thought.

  254. If you seek Him,

  255. He will be found by you.

  256. But if you forsake Him,

  257. He will cast you off forever.

  258. So, the very beginning,

  259. we are to recognize God

  260. as God

  261. and to seek Him

  262. as our God.

  263. And the answer goes on,

  264. and to worship

  265. and to glorify Him

  266. as such.

  267. Psalmist of Psalm 95,

    Psalms 95:6

  268. verses 6 and 7,

  269. O come,

  270. let us worship

  271. and bow down.

  272. Let us kneel before the Lord,

  273. our Maker.

  274. For He is our God,

  275. and we are the people

  276. of His pasture

  277. and the sheep

  278. of His hand.

  279. So, we're meant to worship Him

  280. as our God

  281. by valuing,

  282. meditating on,

  283. remembering,

  284. highly regarding,

  285. honoring,

  286. adoring,

  287. preferring,

  288. loving,

  289. desiring,

  290. fearing,

  291. believing,

  292. trusting,

  293. hoping,

  294. delighting,

  295. and rejoicing

  296. in Him.

  297. How wonderfully

  298. exhaustive, right?

  299. All of us,

  300. right?

  301. All of our intentions,

  302. all of our emotions,

  303. given to the worship

  304. of this God.

  305. Deuteronomy 6, 5,

  306. You shall love the Lord your God

  307. with all your heart

  308. and with all your soul

  309. and with all your might.

  310. This is a verse

  311. that Jesus cites

  312. in Matthew 22,

  313. in verse 37.

  314. Psalm 73, 25,

  315. Whom have I in heaven

  316. but you?

  317. And there is nothing

  318. on earth I desire.

  319. besides you.

  320. And Paul writes

  321. in Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:21

  322. verse 21,

  323. For to me,

  324. to live

  325. is Christ.

  326. My very being

  327. is Christ.

  328. And to die

  329. is gain

  330. because I am with

  331. Christ.

  332. The answer goes on,

  333. We must also be

  334. zealous for

  335. and call on Him,

  336. giving Him all praise

  337. and thanks,

  338. completely obeying

  339. and submitting to Him

  340. and our whole person.

  341. Jeremiah 7,

  342. in verse 23,

  343. But this command

  344. I gave them,

  345. Obey my voice

  346. and I will be your God

  347. and you shall be my people

  348. and walk in all the way

  349. that I command you

  350. that it may be well

  351. with you.

  352. In James 4,

    James 4:7

  353. verse 7,

  354. James writes,

  355. Submit yourselves,

  356. therefore,

  357. to God.

  358. Finally,

  359. the answer goes on,

  360. We must walk

  361. humbly with Him,

  362. being careful

  363. to please Him

  364. in everything we say

  365. and do

  366. and being genuinely

  367. sorry

  368. when we offend Him.

  369. 1 John 3,

    1 John 3:22

  370. verse 22,

  371. And whatever we ask,

  372. we receive from Him

  373. because we keep

  374. His commandments

  375. and do

  376. what pleases Him.

  377. And Psalm 119,

    Psalms 119:136

  378. verse 136,

  379. My eyes shed

  380. streams of tears

  381. because people

  382. do not keep

  383. your law.

  384. So in summary,

  385. what does it require

  386. of us?

  387. Everything.

  388. All of us

  389. bent toward,

  390. fixed upon

  391. the one true

  392. God

  393. who is

  394. our God.

  395. Question 105,

  396. What particular sins

  397. does the first

  398. commandment

  399. forbid?

  400. And I love

  401. how exhaustive

  402. these are.

  403. I'm going to read it

  404. for our benefit.

  405. And I know

  406. there's a danger

  407. in doing this

  408. that you're not

  409. going to pay attention

  410. to what I'm reading.

  411. But beloved,

  412. we are all guilty

  413. probably of

  414. all of these things

  415. if not

  416. at least

  417. most

  418. of these things.

  419. And I want you

  420. to see

  421. that the Ten Commandments

  422. set up a framework

  423. for us

  424. which all of the commandments

  425. of the moral law

  426. fit underneath.

  427. So if we can rightly

  428. understand

  429. these commandments,

  430. it will help us

  431. to walk rightly

  432. before our God.

  433. To do this work

  434. of walking holy

  435. and bringing about

  436. praise of His name

  437. to all peoples.

  438. So let me read it

  439. in its entirety.

  440. Particular sins

  441. the first commandment

  442. forbids.

  443. The first commandment

  444. forbids

  445. atheism.

  446. Denying or not

  447. believing in God.

  448. Idolatry.

  449. Believing in or

  450. worshiping any other

  451. gods along with

  452. or other than

  453. the one true God.

  454. Not having and

  455. affirming Him

  456. as God

  457. and our God.

  458. Failing or

  459. neglecting to do

  460. anything this

  461. commandment requires

  462. relating to God.

  463. Ignorance of Him.

  464. Forgetting Him.

  465. Misunderstanding Him.

  466. Untrue opinions

  467. about Him

  468. and evil or

  469. unworthy thoughts

  470. about Him.

  471. Irreverent curiosity

  472. about an inquiry

  473. into His secrets.

  474. All godless

  475. desecration.

  476. Hating God.

  477. Self-love.

  478. Self-interest.

  479. And all other

  480. disorderly or

  481. excessive attention.

  482. Mental,

  483. willful,

  484. or emotional

  485. to things that

  486. divert our attention

  487. partially or

  488. completely from

  489. God.

  490. Also included are

  491. worthless beliefs,

  492. lack of faith,

  493. heretical beliefs,

  494. wrong belief,

  495. not trusting God,

  496. spiritual despair,

  497. refusing correction

  498. and resisting God's

  499. judgment,

  500. hardness of heart,

  501. pride,

  502. willfulness,

  503. worldly complacency,

  504. putting God to the test,

  505. using unlawful means

  506. to an end,

  507. trusting even in

  508. lawful means of grace

  509. rather than God,

  510. indulging in pleasures

  511. of the flesh,

  512. depraved,

  513. blind,

  514. or improperly directed

  515. zeal,

  516. being lukewarm,

  517. spiritual deadness,

  518. deserting and forsaking God,

  519. praying to or worshiping

  520. saints,

  521. angels,

  522. or any other created

  523. being,

  524. making an agreement

  525. with,

  526. consulting or following

  527. suggestions of the devil,

  528. making men the rulers

  529. of our faith and conscience,

  530. slighting and despising God

  531. and His commandments,

  532. resisting and grieving

  533. His spirit,

  534. and finally being dissatisfied

  535. and offended by the things

  536. God provides in our lives,

  537. ignorantly blaming Him

  538. for the evils He inflicts on us,

  539. as well as attributing

  540. the credit for any good thing

  541. we are,

  542. have,

  543. or can do

  544. to luck,

  545. idols,

  546. ourselves,

  547. or any other created being.

  548. And when,

  549. I'll say when,

  550. not if,

  551. when you look this up

  552. with all of the Scripture proofs,

  553. behind every one,

  554. just before every comma,

  555. there will be a little number

  556. which will work out for you

  557. the text

  558. that these Westminster divines

  559. got together

  560. and pulled all of this understanding

  561. together

  562. for our benefit.

  563. Oh.

  564. Praise the Lord

  565. for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  566. We have transgressed

  567. the law of God

  568. and we have only begun

  569. to look at it.

  570. A couple of New Testament places

  571. for you.

  572. Titus chapter 1 and verse 16,

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  573. they profess to know God

  574. but deny Him by their works.

  575. They are detestable,

  576. disobedient,

  577. unfit

  578. for any good work.

  579. Romans 1 and verse 30,

  580. slanders,

  581. haters of God,

  582. insolent,

  583. haughty,

  584. boastful,

  585. inventors of evil,

  586. disobedient

  587. to parents.

  588. Hear that, children?

  589. Colossians chapter 3,

    Colossians 3:2

  590. verse 2 and verse 5,

  591. set your minds

  592. on things that are above,

  593. not on things

  594. that are on earth.

  595. Put to death,

  596. therefore,

  597. what is earthly in you,

  598. sexual immorality,

  599. impurity,

  600. passion,

  601. evil desire,

  602. and covetousness,

  603. which is idolatry.

  604. We are to give

  605. all of ourselves

  606. in worship

  607. to God.

  608. Question 106.

  609. What do the words

  610. before me

  611. in the first commandment

  612. specifically teach?

  613. What do they

  614. specifically teach?

  615. And the answer is,

  616. the words before me

  617. or,

  618. it could also be translated,

  619. before my face

  620. in the first commandment

  621. teach us that

  622. God who sees everything

  623. takes special note of

  624. and is very offended

  625. by the sin

  626. of having any other God.

  627. These words emphasize

  628. then how important it is

  629. to obey this commandment

  630. and how disobeying it

  631. insolently provokes God.

  632. They also urge us

  633. to be just as mindful

  634. of the fact that God

  635. sees everything we do

  636. as we are of doing things

  637. in His service.

  638. That's to say,

  639. we all live,

  640. whether we recognize it

  641. or not,

  642. quorum Deo.

  643. It's Latin for

  644. in the presence of God.

  645. Everything that we do,

  646. every awry emotion

  647. or intention

  648. that we have

  649. is seen by God

  650. and is an offense

  651. to Him.

  652. Just as,

  653. the very end of the answer says,

  654. praise the Lord,

  655. those things we do

  656. that are pleasing to Him,

  657. He also sees

  658. and is pleased

  659. with us.

  660. Psalm 44,

    Psalms 44:20

  661. verse 20 and 21,

  662. the psalmist says,

  663. if we had forgotten

  664. the name of our God

  665. or spread out our hands

  666. to a foreign God,

  667. would not God discover this?

  668. Rhetorical question.

  669. For He knows

  670. the secrets

  671. of the heart.

  672. And so the first commandment

  673. is a weighty,

  674. weighty commandment.

  675. And the case could be made

  676. that the other commandments

  677. flow from it, right?

  678. If we were to

  679. accurately

  680. keep the first commandment,

  681. I think we would find ourselves

  682. keeping each and every

  683. of the other commandments.

  684. But God is gracious to us

  685. in being more

  686. specific.

  687. So question 107

  688. says,

  689. what is the second commandment?

  690. This is verses 4

  691. through 6.

  692. We're familiar,

  693. and for the sake of time,

  694. I'm not going to read

  695. the entirety of it,

  696. but this is the

  697. idolatry commandment.

  698. You shouldn't make

  699. graven images,

  700. but it has more to do

  701. with our worship

  702. itself.

  703. So question 108

  704. says,

  705. what does the second

  706. commandment require?

  707. The second commandment

  708. requires us

  709. to receive,

  710. respectfully perform,

  711. and preserve

  712. completely and purely

  713. all the regulations

  714. for religion and worship

  715. that God

  716. has established

  717. in His Word.

  718. We believe in the

  719. sufficiency

  720. of Scripture.

  721. I know we have a number

  722. of guests this morning,

  723. and our gathering

  724. might seem a bit

  725. odd to you,

  726. and I can understand

  727. that.

  728. we are laboring

  729. by grace

  730. to arrange our church

  731. in a way that is

  732. consistent with the way

  733. the Scriptures have

  734. commanded us

  735. to arrange our church,

  736. to strip away

  737. those extra things

  738. that are often added

  739. to the worship of God,

  740. and to faithfully

  741. do those things

  742. that we are

  743. commanded to do.

  744. And sometimes,

  745. in our culture,

  746. that can make us

  747. seem strange.

  748. Deuteronomy 12,

    Deuteronomy 12:32

  749. verse 32,

  750. everything that I command you

  751. you shall be careful

  752. to do.

  753. You shall not

  754. add to it

  755. or take from it.

  756. And the Westminster

  757. answer goes on.

  758. These include,

  759. and by the way,

  760. adults were meant

  761. to memorize this,

  762. prayer and thanksgiving

  763. in the name of Christ,

  764. the reading,

  765. preaching,

  766. and hearing of the Word,

  767. the administration

  768. of and receiving

  769. the sacraments,

  770. church government

  771. and discipline,

  772. the administration

  773. and upkeep

  774. of the church,

  775. religious fasting,

  776. swearing by the name

  777. of God

  778. and making vows

  779. to Him,

  780. also included

  781. our disapproving,

  782. denouncing,

  783. and opposing

  784. false worship

  785. and doing our best

  786. in accordance

  787. with our position

  788. and calling in life

  789. to eliminate it

  790. in all forms

  791. of idolatry.

  792. So we are to rightly

  793. gather together

  794. for the worship

  795. of God

  796. and do what we can

  797. to eliminate

  798. false worship

  799. of God.

  800. And then question 109

  801. asks,

  802. what particular sins

  803. does the second

  804. commandment

  805. forbid?

  806. The second commandment

  807. forbids,

  808. and I just want you

  809. to take a moment

  810. and put in your mind

  811. the American church,

  812. even our church,

  813. please be critical,

  814. it's okay.

  815. The second commandment

  816. forbids

  817. imagining,

  818. recommending,

  819. demanding,

  820. practicing,

  821. or in any way

  822. approving

  823. any religious worship

  824. not established

  825. by God Himself.

  826. Creating any likeness

  827. of God

  828. as the Trinity

  829. or as any one

  830. of His three persons,

  831. either internally

  832. in our minds

  833. or externally

  834. in the form

  835. of any kind

  836. of image

  837. or representation

  838. of a created being.

  839. There are all kinds

  840. of skip ministries

  841. that just got blown

  842. out of the water.

  843. Any worship

  844. of such created likeness

  845. as if God

  846. were in them

  847. or as if they were

  848. a means to worshiping Him,

  849. the creation

  850. of any likeness

  851. of invented gods,

  852. any worship of them

  853. or serving relating

  854. to them,

  855. and all superstitious

  856. contrivances.

  857. Also forbidden are

  858. any departure

  859. from the true worship

  860. of God

  861. by adding to

  862. or taking away

  863. from it,

  864. whether by our own

  865. invention

  866. or received

  867. from some other tradition,

  868. and whether justified

  869. by antiquity,

  870. custom,

  871. devotional practice,

  872. good intentions,

  873. or any other excuse.

  874. Simony,

  875. which is the selling

  876. of religious benefit,

  877. and anything sacrilegious,

  878. and finally,

  879. any neglect of,

  880. contempt for,

  881. hindering,

  882. or opposition

  883. to the worship

  884. and regulations

  885. established by God.

  886. What a task before us

  887. to gather as the church

  888. and to rightly worship Him.

  889. Praise the Lord.

  890. We have good command,

  891. right,

  892. to help and direct us

  893. for our benefit

  894. and for the glory

  895. of God

  896. in the world.

  897. To be a people

  898. set apart

  899. for His name

  900. in our gathering

  901. so that we can be

  902. a people set apart

  903. for His name

  904. in our going.

  905. Question 110.

  906. What reason is added

  907. to the second commandment

  908. emphasizing

  909. how important

  910. it is

  911. to obey it?

  912. And that reason is

  913. that God

  914. is a jealous

  915. God.

  916. Right?

  917. And that idolatry

  918. will be punished

  919. and faithfulness

  920. will be rewarded.

  921. Beloved,

  922. I hope that we are those

  923. finding ourselves

  924. rewarded by God

  925. in faithfulness.

  926. Question 111.

  927. I'm picking up pace

  928. because I see the time.

  929. What is the third commandment?

  930. Verse 7.

  931. You shall not

  932. take the name

  933. of the Lord your God

  934. in vain

  935. for the Lord

  936. will not hold him

  937. guiltless

  938. who takes

  939. His name

  940. in vain.

  941. This commandment

  942. has been

  943. oversimplified

  944. to simply think

  945. of using God's name

  946. as a curse word

  947. and it means that

  948. to be sure.

  949. But it means

  950. so much

  951. more.

  952. Look at the answer

  953. to question 112.

  954. The third commandment

  955. requires the holy

  956. and reverent use

  957. in our thoughts,

  958. meditations,

  959. words,

  960. and writings

  961. of God's name,

  962. titles,

  963. qualities,

  964. regulations,

  965. word,

  966. sacraments,

  967. prayer,

  968. oaths,

  969. vows,

  970. casting lots,

  971. His works,

  972. and anything else

  973. by which

  974. He makes Himself

  975. known.

  976. His name

  977. is His

  978. person.

  979. This treatment

  980. will be reflected

  981. in holy affirmations

  982. of our faith

  983. and conduct

  984. that matches

  985. our affirmations

  986. to the glory

  987. of God

  988. and the good

  989. of ourselves

  990. and others.

  991. And that's why

  992. we're instructed

  993. by Jesus

  994. in Matthew 6,

  995. 9 to pray

  996. like this,

  997. our Father

  998. in heaven,

  999. hallowed,

  1000. reverenced,

  1001. be your name.

  1002. And why

  1003. we're warned

  1004. in places like

  1005. Ecclesiastes 5,

  1006. in verse 2,

  1007. be not rash

  1008. with your mouth,

  1009. nor let your heart

  1010. be hasty

  1011. to utter a word

  1012. before God.

  1013. For God

  1014. is in heaven

  1015. and you

  1016. are on earth

  1017. and you are not

  1018. is what

  1019. the writer

  1020. is saying.

  1021. Therefore,

  1022. let your words

  1023. be few.

  1024. Be very careful

  1025. in the words

  1026. that you utter.

  1027. Our words

  1028. are meant

  1029. to be reverent

  1030. about our God.

  1031. Question 113,

  1032. what particular sins

  1033. does the third

  1034. commandment forbid?

  1035. The third commandment

  1036. forbids

  1037. not using God's name

  1038. as is required,

  1039. the abuse of it

  1040. through ignorance,

  1041. empty or unholy

  1042. treatment,

  1043. irreverence,

  1044. superstition,

  1045. or any wicked

  1046. reference to

  1047. His titles,

  1048. qualities,

  1049. regulations,

  1050. or works,

  1051. blasphemy,

  1052. perjury,

  1053. all sinful cursing,

  1054. oaths,

  1055. vows,

  1056. and casting lots,

  1057. violating our

  1058. oaths and vows,

  1059. if lawful,

  1060. and keeping them

  1061. if aimed at

  1062. unlawful things,

  1063. complaining and

  1064. quarreling about

  1065. or misapplication

  1066. of God's decrees

  1067. and acts of providence

  1068. as well as

  1069. unwarranted curiosity

  1070. about them,

  1071. misinterpreting

  1072. or misapplying

  1073. God's word

  1074. or perverting

  1075. all or part

  1076. of its meaning

  1077. in any way.

  1078. Boy,

1079. we shudder at that point.

  1080. Blasphemous mockery

  1081. of His word,

  1082. pointless arguing,

  1083. meaningless talk,

  1084. or supporting

  1085. false doctrines,

  1086. abusing God's name,

  1087. His creatures,

  1088. or anything included

  1089. under His name

  1090. in the practice

  1091. of magic

  1092. or to promote

  1093. sinful desires

  1094. and activities,

  1095. maligning,

  1096. scorning,

  1097. reviling,

  1098. or opposing

  1099. in any way

  1100. God's truth,

  1101. grace,

  1102. and actions,

  1103. pretending to be

  1104. religious

  1105. or using religion

  1106. for evil purposes,

  1107. being ashamed

  1108. of God's name

  1109. or ashamed to it

  1110. by stubbornly

  1111. refusing to obey Him

  1112. and by living

  1113. unwisely,

  1114. unfruitfully,

1115. or in such a way

  1116. as to offend Him

  1117. or backslide

  1118. away from Him.

  1119. I find that we

  1120. are guilty,

  1121. again,

  1122. of the third

  1123. commandment.

  1124. And what reasons

  1125. are added

  1126. to the third

  1127. commandment?

  1128. The reasons

  1129. are in these words,

  1130. the Lord thy God

  1131. and the Lord

  1132. will not hold

  1133. anyone guiltless

  1134. who misuses

  1135. His name.

  1136. Because He is

  1137. the Lord

  1138. and our God,

  1139. His name must

  1140. never be treated

  1141. as unholy

  1142. or misused

1143. by us in any way,

  1144. particularly since

  1145. He is so opposed

  1146. to acquitting

  1147. or sparing

  1148. those who break

  1149. this commandment

  1150. that He will not

  1151. allow them to escape

  1152. His righteous

  1153. judgment,

  1154. even though

  1155. many who do

  1156. break this

  1157. commandment

  1158. escape human

  1159. condemnation

  1160. and punishment.

  1161. Leviticus 19

  1162. and verse 12,

  1163. You shall not

  1164. swear by my name

  1165. falsely,

  1166. and so profane

  1167. the name

  1168. of your God.

  1169. I am

  1170. the Lord.

  1171. We ought to be

  1172. careful, beloved,

  1173. how we speak

  1174. about this God,

  1175. what we understand

  1176. to be true

  1177. of Him.

  1178. We will end

  1179. today's study

  1180. by looking

  1181. briefly at

  1182. question and

  1183. answer

  1184. 102.

  1185. What is the

  1186. essence of the

  1187. first four

  1188. commandments that

  1189. cover our

  1190. obligations to

  1191. God?

  1192. We've talked

  1193. about three.

  1194. I understand.

  1195. What is the

  1196. essence of the

  1197. first four

  1198. commandments that

  1199. cover our

  1200. obligations to

  1201. God?

  1202. And the answer

  1203. is this.

  1204. The essence of

  1205. these four

  1206. commandments is to

  1207. love the Lord

  1208. your God,

  1209. with all your

  1210. heart,

  1211. with all our

  1212. soul,

  1213. with all our

  1214. strength,

  1215. with all our

  1216. mind.

  1217. To set our

  1218. affections,

  1219. our desires,

  1220. our love on

  1221. Him.

  1222. Beloved,

  1223. we are a people

  1224. called apart for

  1225. God's own

  1226. possession,

  1227. for our good,

  1228. and so that His

  1229. glory would be

  1230. known in all

  1231. the world.

  1232. world.

  1233. So as those

  1234. who have been

  1235. made righteous

  1236. in Christ,

  1237. we are to be

  1238. keepers of the

  1239. law, not just

  1240. outwardly, but

  1241. with all that we

  1242. are, working

  1243. with all His

  1244. energy that He

  1245. powerfully works

  1246. within us.

  1247. Standing confident

  1248. in the fact that

  1249. if we have placed

  1250. saving faith in the

  1251. personal work of

  1252. Jesus Christ, we

  1253. are secure in

  1254. Him.

  1255. Praise the

  1256. Lord that He is

  1257. our righteousness.

  1258. righteousness.

  1259. Because we have

  1260. not and we will

  1261. not perfectly keep

  1262. this law.

  1263. It's given to us

  1264. to labor in it,

  1265. to press on into

1266. it for the sake of

  1267. His name, for our

  1268. good, but we will

  1269. not keep it

  1270. perfectly.

  1271. So praise God

  1272. that there is

  1273. therefore now no

  1274. condemnation for

  1275. those who are in

  1276. Christ Jesus.

  1277. But hear me so

  1278. clearly.

  1279. We have all

  1280. transgressed God's

  1281. law.

  1282. And if you are

  1283. not in Christ

  1284. this morning,

  1285. then there is

  1286. great condemnation

  1287. for you.

  1288. There is death

  1289. and eternal hell

  1290. awaiting you.

  1291. But by faith in

  1292. Christ, you can

  1293. put on His

  1294. righteousness and

  1295. stand in this

  1296. non-condemnation

  1297. place.

  1298. We have been

  1299. given the Spirit

  1300. of God to lead

  1301. us into all

  1302. truth and to

  1303. cause us,

  1304. those who have

  1305. been delivered

  1306. from sin to

  1307. walk in His

  1308. ways.

  1309. And we

  1310. should do so.

  1311. Let's pray

  1312. together.

  1313. Thank you.
