  1. I must admit that I'm tempted to not preach this morning and just let Wes and Liz keep singing songs and Wes preaching homilies in between the songs.

  2. !

  3. Our text for today will be Matthew chapter 5 verses 33 through 37.

    Matthew 5:33–37

  4. And this text falls within what is most often called the Sermon on the Mount.

  5. We've been in for quite some months now.

  6. And across our study of the Sermon on the Mount, we've considered two prominent themes.

  7. So two large frameworks that I think are important for us to have on our minds as we venture into any smaller part of this great sermon.

  8. The first is human flourishing.

  9. What does it look like to live well as a citizen of God's kingdom?

  10. What does it mean to be a good citizen of this good kingdom?

  11. And we see that the human flourishing that Jesus teaches is not the same as the flourishing that the world would teach us.

  12. Jesus says at the very outset of the sermon,

  13. Blessed are those who are poor in spirit and who mourn and who are meek and who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

  14. who are merciful, pure peacemakers,

  15. and those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.

  16. It's the ones that Jesus calls flourishing.

  17. He steps into a world turned upside down by all of the self-sitterness and self-promotion of His day and ours

  18. and turns it again right side up.

  19. So that's the first theme.

  20. The second theme is the theme of whole person righteousness.

  21. And that would be to say that we are meant to be holy and blameless before God in all senses

  22. and that we are flourishing when we're doing this thing.

  23. These themes don't, they interact quite often in the text.

  24. Jesus has taught us that citizens of His kingdom are keepers of the law.

  25. Not that they gain their citizen by the keeping of the law,

  26. but that they have been granted citizenship by the mercy of God.

  27. And that this keeping of the law evidences their citizenship.

  28. God's people, the citizens of His kingdom, should be zealous to please their king,

  29. to walk in His ways.

  30. And this law keeping, this righteousness, is not merely meant to be an outward working,

  31. but an inward one as well.

  32. Both the actions, but the intentions, the feelings, the emotions.

  33. What we hope to see accomplished by the actions.

  34. Every bit of our being is meant to be leveraged in service to God.

  35. And this is what Jesus means when He says in Matthew 5 and verse 20,

  36. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  37. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  38. The listeners of His day would have been shocked by this.

  39. The scribes and the Pharisees seemed to have it all figured out.

  40. They were the most outwardly righteous.

  41. They seemed to be following God.

  42. But He then begins to press this point by using a series of phrases,

  43. beginning in Matthew 5, verses 21 and 22.

    Matthew 5:21

  44. You'll note at the beginning of 21,

  45. You have heard that it was said to those of old.

  46. And then the beginning of verse 22,

  47. But I say to you.

  48. He's taking these common teachings, the rabbinical teachings of the day,

  49. these standards by which people would have looked at the scribes and the Pharisees

  50. and called them holy,

  51. and He's correcting them.

  52. He's showing how they don't actually get to the point.

  53. This whole person righteousness that's required of us by God.

  54. And He does this six times to the end of chapter 5.

  55. And what He's doing is bringing about this correction of common misinterpretations

  56. of the law in His day.

  57. And we are apt to these same errors.

  58. We may not pick them up as rabbinical teachings,

  59. but we may pick them up in other forms in our day.

  60. This morning's text is the fourth in this series

  61. and concerns the making and keeping of promises.

  62. Human societies depend upon truthfulness.

  63. It would suggest that they will both rise and fall

  64. based on the degree of truth that is contained within said society.

  65. We certainly live in a day that it is very difficult to know

  66. what the truth is and who is telling the truth.

  67. It is difficult to trust much of anything that you read or hear any longer.

  68. And if you try to delve down and figure out what the truth is,

  69. I find I often get much more confused.

  70. The state that we find our society in

  71. should not be the case amongst followers of Jesus Christ.

  72. Citizens of the kingdom of heaven

  73. are to be characterized by truthfulness.

  74. Truth ushered us into the kingdom.

  75. And so we are to be lovers of the truth.

  76. On your bulletin, you'll find a Richard Sibbes quote

  77. who was a 16th century Puritan.

  78. I love this.

  79. He said, when we come to be religious,

  80. and by that he means converted to God,

  81. not the way we think of outwardly religious.

  82. When we come to be religious,

  83. we lose not our pleasure, but translate it.

  84. Before we fed on common notions,

  85. but now we live on holy truths.

  86. We should be lovers of the truth as God's people.

  87. And so this morning we will look at our text

  88. simply and briefly to that end.

  89. Before I read the text, beloved,

  90. let me remind you that this is God's word to us.

  91. It was written for his glory and our good.

  92. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it

  93. in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  94. So Matthew chapter 5, and I begin reading in verse 33.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  95. Again, you have heard that it was said to those of old,

  96. you shall not swear falsely,

  97. but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  98. But I say to you,

  99. do not take an oath at all,

  100. either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

  101. or by the earth, for it is his footstool,

  102. or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.

  103. And do not take an oath by your head,

  104. for you cannot make one hair white or black.

  105. Let what you say be simply yes or no.

  106. Anything more than this comes from evil.

  107. We must first look at the misrepresentation of the law

  108. that Jesus is correcting.

  109. We need to understand the negative command found here

  110. in order to understand the positive.

  111. What is Jesus saying we ought not to do

  112. in order for us to understand what it is we are to do?

  113. And so you see in verse 33,

  114. Jesus again with this phrasing,

  115. you have heard it said to those of old.

  116. This was their statement.

  117. You shall not swear falsely,

  118. but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  119. This rabbinical teaching was an amalgamation

  120. of a number of Old Testament texts.

  121. It's not a direct citation from any Old Testament text.

  122. They likely had in mind texts like Exodus 20,

  123. and verse 7,

  124. you shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain,

  125. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless

  126. who takes his name in vain.

  127. So you shouldn't make a promise on the name of God

  128. and then not keep the promise.

  129. This would be an infraction of Exodus 20,

  130. and verse 7.

  131. They also may have had in mind texts like Deuteronomy 6,

  132. it is the Lord your God you shall fear,

  133. Him you shall serve,

  134. and by His name you shall swear.

  135. Or Leviticus 19, 12,

  136. you shall not swear by my name falsely,

  137. and so profane the name of your God.

  138. I am the Lord.

  139. So now on the surface,

  140. this seems very satisfactory.

  141. This idea of you shall not swear falsely,

  142. but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.

  143. But there were two very common

  144. and very unsatisfactory practices

  145. in the oath-taking of Jesus' day.

  146. And we have to do a little work to understand that.

  147. If we simply come to the text,

  148. we're not his primary audience.

  149. We're the wonderful beneficiaries

  150. as a secondary audience,

  151. but he's speaking to a people.

  152. He's speaking to a culture

  153. and practice of the day.

  154. So there's these two very common

  155. and two very unsatisfactory practices

  156. in the oath-taking of his day.

  157. Number one was frivolous swearing.

  158. Oath-making.

  159. I don't mean cursing.

  160. I mean oath-making when I say swearing.

  161. Frivolous swearing.

  162. People would make an oath

  163. for almost anything at all.

  164. So insignificant statements

  165. were placed on the same level

  166. as very serious statements.

  167. If you should ever be called

  168. to testify in a court of law,

  169. you will be asked to swear

  170. to tell the truth,

  171. the whole truth,

  172. and nothing but the truth.

  173. This is a very serious matter.

  174. You've been called as a witness

  175. and your testimony may free

  176. or imprison someone.

  177. This is a weighty matter.

  178. But at times,

  179. many people in our day

  180. will make a trivial statement

  181. and then follow it with something like,

  182. I swear,

  183. or I swear to God.

  184. That's the kind of frivolous activity

  185. that was happening in his day.

  186. The application of oath-taking

  187. to things that didn't deserve

  188. the weight of oath-taking.

  189. This is this frivolous swearing

  190. that I'm referring to.

  191. James Montgomery Boyce,

  192. who was a 20th century Presbyterian minister,

  193. in his commentary on this text,

  194. said this,

  195. it was exactly as if a servant

  196. who lived in the household

  197. of an honorable state official

  198. should go around talking about

  199. the honorable house,

  200. the honorable chair,

  201. the honorable mop,

  202. the honorable dishpan,

  203. and so forth.

  204. His speech would then have

  205. much less meaning

  206. when he called

  207. the Lord of the house,

  208. Your Honor.

  209. So this was a prevalent thing

  210. in the day,

  211. but the more serious abuse

  212. of oath-taking of the day,

  213. which Jesus more poignantly addresses

  214. in this text,

  215. was evasive swearing.

  216. Evasive swearing.

  217. People were afraid

  218. to make an oath

  219. in the name of the Lord

  220. because they were either

  221. telling less than the truth,

  222. they were out and out lying,

  223. and they didn't want to take

  224. an oath in the name of the Lord,

  225. fearing judgment,

  226. or they were afraid

  227. that they would be unable

  228. to keep their promise,

  229. or had no intention

  230. of keeping their promise at all.

  231. So, they developed the habit

  232. of swearing on something lesser,

  233. like heaven, the earth,

  234. Jerusalem, or their own heads.

  235. They'd swear on their own life.

  236. And these oaths

  237. were not considered binding.

  238. So you could take an oath,

  239. but in a lesser thing

  240. than God Himself,

  241. and you could get out of it.

  242. It wasn't really an oath at all

  243. in that case.

  244. Jesus speaks to this

  245. in Matthew chapter 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  246. This is the chapter

  247. where all the woes

  248. to the scribes

  249. are contained within.

  250. And He says,

  251. beginning in verse 16,

  252. Woe to you blind guides

  253. who say,

  254. if anyone swears by the temple,

  255. it is nothing.

  256. But if anyone swears by the gold

  257. of the temple,

  258. he is bound by his oath.

  259. So these are these laws

  260. they put in place.

  261. Jesus says,

  262. you blind fools,

  263. for which is greater,

  264. the gold or the temple

  265. that has made the gold sacred?

  266. And you say,

  267. if anyone swears by the altar,

  268. it is nothing.

  269. But if anyone swears by the gift

  270. that is on the altar,

  271. he is bound by his oath.

  272. You blind men,

  273. for which is greater,

  274. the gift or the altar

  275. that makes the gift sacred?

  276. So whoever swears by the altar

  277. swears by it

  278. and by everything on it.

  279. And whoever swears by the temple

  280. swears by it

  281. and by him who dwells in it.

  282. And whoever swears by heaven

  283. swears by the throne of God

  284. and by him who sits

  285. upon it.

  286. The Pharisees,

  287. in an effort to carefully

  288. keep the law,

  289. so often lost sight

  290. of the spirit

  291. of that law

  292. and became far too concerned

  293. about the letter of it.

  294. People lived,

  295. as many do today,

  296. as if any part of their life

  297. could ever be separated

  298. from the presence of God.

  299. And this is simply not so.

  300. So this was the misrepresentation

  301. of the law that Jesus is correcting.

  302. It appears on the surface

  303. to be so good.

  304. If you make an oath,

  305. keep it.

  306. But this was the practice

  307. that was going on

  308. in the day

  309. to try to avoid

  310. the biblical way

  311. in which oaths are meant

  312. to be made

  313. and kept.

  314. So he's correcting them.

  315. This frivolous

  316. and this evasive swearing.

  317. One minimizing the truth

  318. and the other avoiding it

  319. altogether.

  320. And he does so

  321. with the following statement.

  322. We've read already.

  323. Verse 34,

  324. Now there are many,

  325. even today,

  326. that believe that Jesus here

  327. is abolishing

  328. the practice of oath-taking

  329. completely.

  330. He is entirely doing away

  331. with it altogether.

  332. There are those

  333. who refuse to make promises

  334. with any degree

  335. of gravitas

  336. who do not hold

  337. that one should take

  338. an oath in a court of law

  339. or that doctors,

  340. police officers,

  341. military personnel,

  342. judges,

  343. our elected officials,

  344. and so forth

  345. should be sworn in

  346. to their prospective offices.

  347. They all take oaths

  348. when they do this

  349. to upkeep

  350. particular promises

  351. of that office.

  352. I am not one

  353. of those people

  354. and I will show you why

  355. from the two testaments.

  356. So what I'm doing here

  357. is I'm debunking

  358. the idea,

  359. I hope,

  360. that we ought not ever

  361. take an oath

  362. that Jesus' word,

  363. but I say you do not

  364. take an oath at all,

  365. has to be placed

  366. in its proper context

  367. and in the larger context

  368. of Scripture

  369. to understand

  370. what it is

  371. he's combating

  372. specifically

  373. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  374. So let me show you

  375. from the two testaments

  376. briefly.

  377. So first in the Old Testament,

  378. I read it to you already,

  379. but in Leviticus 19.12,

  380. God gives instruction

  381. for the taking of oaths.

  382. He tells us

  383. in this particular case

  384. how not to take an oath.

  385. So there's a positive

  386. implication as well.

  387. He says,

  388. you shall not swear

  389. by my name falsely

  390. and so profane

  391. the name of your God.

  392. I am the Lord.

  393. So the inverse of that

  394. would be to say,

  395. you should swear

  396. by my name truthfully.

  397. If you make an oath,

  398. you should keep said oath.

  399. Many Old Testament saints

  400. made oaths.

  401. Abraham swore by God's name

  402. in Genesis chapter 14,

    Genesis 14:22

  403. verse 22,

  404. and verse 23

  405. as he interacts

  406. with the king of Sodom.

  407. He says,

  408. I have lifted my hand

  409. to the Lord,

  410. God most high,

  411. possessor of heaven and earth,

  412. that I would not take

  413. a thread

  414. or a sandal strap

  415. or anything that is yours,

  416. lest you should say,

  417. I have made Abram rich.

  418. He's saying,

  419. I have lifted my hand,

  420. I have made a promise

  421. in God's name,

  422. in His presence,

  423. with Him as the witness

  424. of the promise

  425. that I'm making to you.

  426. And he affirms this

  427. to the king of Sodom

  428. by telling him this very thing.

  429. Another example,

  430. amongst many,

  431. David and Jonathan

  432. covenanted together

  433. in the name of the Lord

  434. in 1 Samuel chapter 20

    1 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  435. and verse 16.

  436. And Jonathan made a covenant

  437. with the house of David,

  438. saying,

  439. May the Lord take vengeance

  440. on David's enemies.

  441. Right?

  442. He calls God,

  443. right,

  444. to uphold the covenant

  445. that they make together

  446. in that case.

  447. So those are just two

  448. of the many Old Testament examples

  449. I could provide.

  450. But more importantly,

  451. I want to look at the New Testament

  452. on the matter.

  453. Right?

  454. So those who would say

  455. that Jesus has come

  456. and He's put away the practice,

  457. right?

  458. So there's a practice

  459. we've established.

  460. And I want to show you

  461. that the practice continues on

  462. in the New Testament as well

  463. and spend a bit more time there.

  464. So in the New Testament,

  465. and I think the highest example

  466. we may have here,

  467. earthly example,

  468. Jesus swore an oath

  469. when He was on trial

  470. before Caiaphas

  471. in Matthew chapter 26.

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  472. This is verse 63 and verse 64.

  473. It says,

  474. But Jesus remained silent.

  475. And the high priest said to Him,

  476. I adjure you by the living God.

  477. Tell us if you are the Christ,

  478. the Son of God.

  479. And here he's doing,

  480. he's appealing to God Himself,

  481. right?

  482. Before God,

  483. in the name of God,

  484. speak the truth.

  485. And what does Jesus say in response?

  486. You have said so.

  487. He doesn't say to Him,

  488. right?

  489. Well, I'll tell you,

  490. but I'm not going to do that.

  491. I'm not going to swear

  492. on the name of God

  493. that I am in fact

  494. the Son of God.

  495. But when He says it,

  496. He says,

  497. You have said so.

  498. He affirms the very thing

  499. that Caiaphas is asking Him to do.

  500. Further,

  501. Paul swore oaths.

  502. And we don't pick these up often,

  503. but this is what he's doing.

  504. Romans chapter 9 and verse 1.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  505. He says,

  506. I am speaking the truth in Christ.

  507. I am not lying.

  508. My conscience bears me witness

  509. in the Holy Spirit.

  510. He's appealing to God

  511. as the witness of His truthfulness.

  512. And in 2 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 23,

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  513. I think more emphatically here,

  514. he says,

  515. But I call God to witness against me.

  516. It was to spare you

  517. that I refrained from coming again to Corinth.

  518. So again,

  519. appealing to making a promise.

  520. I'm speaking the truth

  521. and God will bear me witness

  522. for this truth

  523. that I am speaking.

  524. Most importantly to the case I'm making,

  525. the writer of Hebrews tells us

  526. that God Himself

  527. swore an oath

  528. to His people.

  529. And this is Hebrews chapter 6.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  530. And I'd like for you to turn

  531. and look at this with me.

  532. Beginning in verse 13.

  533. Verse 13.

  534. Verse 13.

  535. The writer of Hebrews

  536. is writing at this point

  537. to give his readers

  538. a confidence in the promises of God.

  539. A confidence that remains

  540. for us today.

  541. It was certainly active for them

  542. and is still active for us.

  543. And he bases that confidence

  544. in an oath

  545. made by God Himself.

  546. If we think that oaths

  547. are no longer allowable,

  548. I would tend to think

  549. that oaths are broken in that case

  550. and we cannot have this kind of confidence.

  551. So he writes,

  552. beginning in verse 13,

  553. For when God made a promise to Abraham,

  554. since he had no one greater

  555. by whom to swear,

  556. he swore by himself,

  557. saying,

  558. Surely I will bless you

  559. and multiply you.

  560. And thus Abraham,

  561. having patiently waited,

  562. obtained the promise.

  563. For people swear by something

  564. greater than themselves,

  565. and in all their disputes,

  566. an oath

  567. is final

  568. for confirmation.

  569. So when God desired

  570. to show more convincingly

  571. to the heirs

  572. of the promise

  573. the unchangeable character

  574. of His purpose,

  575. He guaranteed it

  576. with an oath.

  577. He made a promise.

  578. He swore by Himself.

  579. God,

  580. who cannot change

  581. and cannot lie,

  582. swore an oath.

  583. And it is a blessed oath,

  584. right,

  585. that all the nations of the world

  586. will be blessed

  587. in Jesus Christ,

  588. the seed of Abraham.

  589. So Jesus is not telling us

  590. that we cannot make

  591. large,

  592. weighty promises.

  593. Jesus is warning against

  594. the type of promise making

  595. that was so prevalent

  596. in His day

  597. and

  598. in ours.

  599. And He works through

  600. unraveling their logic

  601. of swearing on a

  602. lesser thing,

  603. doesn't He?

  604. He says the lesser thing

  605. really belongs to God

  606. anyway,

  607. right?

  608. Heaven is the throne of God,

  609. earth is His footstool,

  610. Jerusalem is His city,

  611. and you can't even

  612. control your head.

  613. I am also the God

  614. of your life.

  615. So swearing on anything lesser

  616. is to swear

  617. by God Himself.

  618. Jesus will not allow anyone

  619. to play games

  620. and cheat the rules.

  621. He sees the motivations

  622. and purposes

  623. of our hearts,

  624. this whole person

  625. righteousness,

  626. right?

  627. All of our lives

  628. ought to be lived

  629. quorum Deo,

  630. that is,

  631. in the presence

  632. of God.

  633. Jesus is saying

  634. don't make frivolous

  635. or evasive

  636. promises.

  637. When you make

  638. weighty promises,

  639. they should be made

  640. as a people

  641. who love

  642. and walk

  643. in the truth.

  644. And we do make

  645. these sort

  646. of weighty promises.

  647. I would not want

  648. to do away

  649. with these kinds

  650. of promises

  651. that we make.

  652. As examples,

  653. we do so

  654. in our marriage vows.

  655. We agree

  656. that God

  657. is presiding

  658. over our marriage.

  659. We are making

  660. promises

  661. to each other,

  662. big promises

  663. to each other.

  664. We are making

  665. an oath

  666. as we covenant

  667. together in

  668. marriage.

  669. And,

  670. we have done

  671. so as a covenant

  672. community.

  673. Those of you

  674. who are members

  675. of our church

  676. and those who

  677. aren't,

  678. come on,

  679. get on the process.

  680. But,

  681. we have made

  682. weighty promises

  683. to one another

  684. and we've done

  685. so,

  686. we've taken

  687. this oath,

  688. we've sworn

  689. by God.

  690. Listen to

  691. the conclusion

  692. of our membership

  693. covenant.

  694. Those of you

  695. who remember

  696. signed this.

  697. It reads,

  698. I enter into

  699. this covenant

  700. together with

  701. Christ Family

  702. Church under

  703. the common

  704. goal of

  705. obedience to

  706. glorification of

  707. and joyful

  708. satisfaction in

  709. Jesus Christ

  710. because I believe

  711. and assert with

  712. the rest of the

  713. body that we

  714. need one of

  715. those help

  716. to do so.

  717. As believers

  718. and disciples

  719. of Jesus,

  720. we have entered

  721. into a covenant

  722. relationship with

  723. God who revealed

  724. himself in

  725. Jesus Christ.

  726. The blessings

  727. and promises

  728. of this covenant

  729. have been freely

  730. extended and given

  731. to us.

  732. Therefore,

  733. out of wonder,

  734. love,

  735. thanksgiving,

  736. and reverence,

  737. we hereby accept

  738. and take up

  739. these covenant

  740. responsibilities

  741. which accompany

  742. said privileges

  743. together as a

  744. covenant family.

  745. This is our

  746. reasonable service

  747. and we should

  748. do nothing

  749. less.

  750. God help us

  751. all.

  752. We rely on

  753. his grace alone

  754. and hold fast

  755. to his promise

  756. that there is now

  757. no condemnation

  758. for those who

  759. are in Christ

  760. Jesus.

  761. May his

  762. grace provide

  763. for all

  764. that he

  765. commands.

  766. We have

  767. made weighty

  768. promises.

  769. We have

  770. taken an

  771. oath to

  772. one another

  773. and I'll

  774. leave out the

  775. details of what

  776. that covenant

  777. says but to

  778. walk in truth

  779. together,

  780. to pursue

  781. Christ together,

  782. to take the

  783. gospel to the

  784. nations together

  785. is the summary

  786. of those

  787. promises that

  788. we made in

  789. the name

  790. of God.

  791. Jesus is

  792. telling the

  793. listeners of

  794. his day

  795. and us

  796. this morning

  797. that when

  798. we take

  799. oaths,

  800. the people

  801. that we

  802. are making

  803. promises to

  804. should be

  805. able to

  806. believe what

  807. we have

  808. said because

  809. our lives

  810. are characterized

  811. by the truth.

  812. To make this

  813. point further,

  814. Jesus goes on

  815. to say,

  816. let what you

  817. say be

  818. simply yes

  819. or no.

  820. Anything more

  821. than this

  822. comes from

  823. evil.

  824. I believe

  825. here that

  826. Jesus is

  827. speaking to

  828. our everyday

  829. interactions with

  830. one another,

  831. with our

  832. spouses,

  833. our employers,

  834. our employees,

  835. your pastor.

  836. If you

  837. say that

  838. you will

  839. do something,

  840. your life

  841. should back

  842. the answer

  843. of yes.

  844. You should

  845. be

  846. trustworthy,

  847. a person

  848. that can

  849. be trusted

  850. as honest.

  851. If you

  852. are asked

  853. a question,

  854. you should

  855. give no

  856. reason for

  857. anyone to

  858. doubt your

  859. answer.

  860. Our lives

  861. would be

  862. characterized

  863. in this

  864. way.

  865. In the

  866. original

  867. language,

  868. Jesus

  869. actually

  870. says,

  871. let what

  872. you say

  873. be simply

  874. yes,

  875. yes,

  876. or no,

  877. no.

  878. Your

  879. translation

  880. may in

  881. fact render

  882. it this

  883. way.

  884. It's a

  885. little more

  886. faithful if

  887. it does

  888. on this

  889. particular

  890. verse.

  891. This

  892. redundancy

  893. in Jesus'

  894. speech is

  895. much like

  896. his teaching

  897. that begins

  898. with truly,

  899. truly,

  900. I say

  901. to you.

  902. It places

  903. emphasis on

  904. the weightiness

  905. of what was

  906. said.

  907. This was

  908. common

  909. practice.

  910. You repeat

  911. a word.

  912. We really

  913. are supposed

  914. to pay

  915. attention to

  916. this word

  917. that has

  918. repetition

  919. with it.

  920. It adds

  921. a weightiness

  922. to it.

  923. Our

  924. yeses

  925. and our

  926. nos

  927. should hold

  928. value in

  929. the minds

  930. of our

  931. listeners.

  932. We as

  933. American

  934. English

  935. speakers don't

  936. need to go

  937. around saying

  938. yes,

  939. yes,

  940. and no,

  941. no.

  942. The point

  943. being,

  944. I think

  945. why the

  946. ESV

  947. translators

  948. just said

  949. yes and

  950. no,

  951. is because

  952. we're

  953. supposed to

  954. say yes

  955. and it

  956. carries

  957. that weight.

  958. It carries

  959. the truly,

  960. truly weight

  961. behind it.

  962. People would

  963. hear us

  964. and believe

  965. us as

  966. followers of

  967. Jesus Christ.

  968. As lovers

  969. of the truth,

  970. those who have

  971. been redeemed

  972. by our faith

  973. in it,

  974. we should be

  975. speakers of

  976. the truth.

  977. We are

  978. children of

  979. God and

  980. God cannot

  981. lie.

  982. Titus

    Titus 1:2

  983. chapter 1

  984. verse 2,

  985. we are

  986. not

  987. children of

  988. Satan.

  989. In John

    John 8:44

  990. chapter 8

  991. verse 44,

  992. Jesus accuses

  993. the religious

  994. leaders of

  995. his day by

  996. saying,

  997. you are

  998. of your

  999. father,

  1000. the devil,

  1001. and your

  1002. will is to

  1003. do your

  1004. father's

  1005. desires.

  1006. He was a

  1007. murderer from

  1008. the beginning

  1009. and does

  1010. not stand

  1011. in the

  1012. truth because

  1013. there is no

  1014. truth in

  1015. him.

  1016. When he

  1017. lies,

  1018. he speaks

  1019. out of

  1020. his own

  1021. character,

  1022. for he is

  1023. a liar and

  1024. the father

  1025. of lies.

  1026. This should

  1027. not be us.

  1028. And in

  1029. Matthew 12

    Matthew 12:34

  1030. verse 34,

  1031. he says again

  1032. this indictment,

  1033. you brood of

  1034. vipers,

  1035. how can you

  1036. speak good

  1037. when you are

  1038. evil?

  1039. For out of

  1040. the abundance

  1041. of the heart

  1042. the mouth

  1043. speaks.

  1044. Good trees

  1045. produce good

  1046. fruit.

  1047. Apples don't

  1048. grow on

  1049. pear trees.

  1050. Apples don't

  1051. grow on,

  1052. right?

  1053. I have now

  1054. been recorded

  1055. singing and

  1056. that's frightening.

  1057. No

  1058. nana's come,

  1059. it only

  1060. grows plums.

  1061. Your heart

  1062. is where

  1063. the words

  1064. of your

  1065. mouth

  1066. grow.

  1067. Your mouth

  1068. is where

  1069. the words

  1070. of your

  1071. heart

  1072. go.

  1073. Jesus

  1074. change

  1075. our

  1076. hearts

  1077. to bear

  1078. good

  1079. fruit.

  1080. Citizens

  1081. of his

  1082. kingdom,

  1083. that was

  1084. entirely

  1085. unplanned

  1086. by the

  1087. way,

  1088. citizens

  1089. of God's

  1090. kingdom

  1091. will be

  1092. truth

  1093. speakers.

  1094. This

  1095. qualifies

  1096. us.

  1097. And again,

  1098. we are not

  1099. citizens because

  1100. we speak

  1101. truth,

  1102. but because

  1103. we are

  1104. citizens.

  1105. We're

  1106. desirous

  1107. for this.

  1108. We hunger

  1109. and thirst

  1110. for this.

  1111. We long

  1112. for God's

  1113. spirit to

  1114. work in

  1115. us this

  1116. righteousness

  1117. that seeks

  1118. truth at

  1119. all cost.

  1120. May we

  1121. be a

  1122. people set

  1123. apart for

  1124. the praise

  1125. of God

  1126. in all

  1127. that we

  1128. do.

  1129. May we

  1130. be characterized

  1131. as followers

  1132. of the

  1133. truth by

  1134. being speakers

  1135. of the

  1136. truth in

  1137. all things

  1138. to all

  1139. peoples

  1140. for the

  1141. glory of

  1142. God.

  1143. I want

  1144. to leave

  1145. you with

  1146. one last

  1147. reading.

  1148. This is

  1149. from 1

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  1150. John

  1151. chapter 1

  1152. and this

  1153. is verses

  1154. 5

  1155. through 10.

  1156. John

  1157. writes,

  1158. this is the

  1159. message we

  1160. have heard

  1161. from him

  1162. and proclaimed

  1163. to you,

  1164. that God

  1165. is light

  1166. and in

  1167. him is

  1168. no darkness

  1169. at all.

  1170. If we

  1171. say we

  1172. have fellowship

  1173. with him

  1174. while we

  1175. walk in

  1176. darkness,

  1177. we lie

  1178. and do

  1179. not practice

  1180. the truth.

  1181. But if we

  1182. walk in

  1183. the light

  1184. as he

  1185. is in

  1186. the light,

  1187. we have

  1188. fellowship

  1189. with one

  1190. another and

  1191. the blood

  1192. of Jesus

  1193. his son

  1194. cleanses

  1195. us from

  1196. all sin.

  1197. If we

  1198. say we

  1199. have no

  1200. sin,

  1201. we deceive

  1202. ourselves

  1203. and the

  1204. truth

  1205. is not

  1206. in us.

  1207. If we

  1208. confess

  1209. our sins,

  1210. he is

  1211. faithful

  1212. and just

  1213. to forgive

  1214. us our

  1215. sins

  1216. and to

  1217. cleanse us

  1218. from all

  1219. unrighteousness.

  1220. If we

  1221. say we

  1222. have not

  1223. sinned,

  1224. we make

  1225. him a

  1226. liar and

  1227. his word

  1228. is not

  1229. in us.

  1230. Let's pray

  1231. together.
