  1. Good morning. Open up your copy of God's Word to Matthew 5.

  2. So those of you who are kind of new on the scene, we've been going through a series for quite a while now,

  3. ! Just an exposition on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5.

  4. And it has been challenging. It's been, let me think the right word,

  5. it has made me really care about not just what I do, but why I do it.

  6. And God has used it to really work in the hearts of the people here.

  7. And today we'll pick up in verse 43 of Matthew 5.

  8. And previous weeks, a lot has been talked about.

  9. Nathan has, I guess, explained this very well, but just by way of review,

  10. following his baptism by John and following the calling of his disciples,

  11. Jesus began his earthly ministry in Galilee.

  12. And Galilee roughly had a population of around 300,000, roughly, in a bunch of towns and villages.

  13. And he's teaching in the synagogues and he's proclaiming the gospel,

  14. the good news about the coming of the kingdom of God.

  15. And he is healing diseases among the people.

  16. As we see often in the scripture, Jesus combines, like his earthly ministry,

  17. with teaching and acts of mercy and meeting the needs of physical ailments and physical needs.

  18. And Jesus himself has come as the embodiment of the kingdom of God.

  19. He is the king and he has come in humiliation,

  20. walking among those created in the image of God.

  21. And as we see, the word of Jesus spreads all over the place.

  22. The acts that he's doing, the sick and the afflicted and the demon-possessed,

  23. everyone is coming to encounter him and to hear him in hopes that he could heal them.

  24. We read in chapter 4, verse 25,

  25. If you skip ahead in chapter 5,

  26. Seeing the crowds, he went up on a mountain.

  27. And when he sat down, his disciples came to him, and he opened his mouth and taught them.

  28. So standing on a high plain overlooking the Sea of Galilee near Capernaum,

  29. Jesus began teaching his disciples and expounding on the reality of what it meant to be a citizen in God's kingdom

  30. and living in his presence in the context of everyday life.

  31. So that's what we hope to accomplish here.

  32. Here, some of you again who are sort of new at this church,

  33. we don't just want to teach from the Bible.

  34. We just don't want to tell you what we want to say from the Bible.

  35. We hopefully preach the Bible itself.

  36. And that's what the power behind the word of God is.

  37. It will impact our daily living.

  38. So those who belong to Jesus, those who belong to the King and His kingdom,

  39. are characterized by certain things that are so countercultural to a sinful world around us.

  40. And a couple of the main themes that you'll pick up on in the Sermon on the Mount.

  41. Throughout His discourse, Jesus is constantly seeking to teach His listeners

  42. the difference between external and internal righteousness.

  43. And He does this by contrasting the outward or external righteousness

  44. of the Jewish religious leaders of the day.

  45. And He contrasts that against the true inward righteousness that God desires.

  46. And there's a huge difference between the two.

  47. There's a huge difference between just outward holy living

  48. and what really is on the inside.

  49. People can look really great on the outside, as we all know.

  50. A lot of us are really good at putting on a show for other people

  51. and kind of displaying how moral and upright we are, humanly speaking.

  52. Yet, apart from God, inwardly we are full of pride, anger, envy, sin.

  53. Jesus is pushing the point that it's not just on the outside what we see in somebody's life,

  54. but what really matters is what God is doing on the inside of someone.

  55. And He rebukes the Jewish religious leaders constantly for their wrong thinking about external righteousness,

  56. what true righteousness is.

  57. In Matthew 23, verse 27, He says,

    Matthew 23:27

  58. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!

  59. You're like whitewashed tombs.

  60. You look great on the outside.

  61. You're nice and clean.

  62. But inwardly, you're dead men's bones.

  63. And that's the outward appearance that they were seeking to put on,

  64. as they have everything put together.

  65. But inwardly, they were full of hypocrisy.

  66. So, as our Lord points out, the righteousness of the religious leaders was purely external

  67. and insufficient to be a part of God's kingdom.

  68. Astoundingly, we see this as the measure constantly in the Scripture,

  69. definitely in the Sermon on the Mount,

  70. that God demands perfect righteousness,

  71. which, humanly speaking, cannot be achieved by any of our own good works, our morality.

  72. Nothing can achieve this righteousness.

  73. So, again, some of you here today may think of yourself as a very good, moral, and upright person.

  74. And you might be compared to most humans.

  75. If you would just, you know, pause and think about the most upstanding person you know,

  76. the best person you can think of,

  77. who's very moral and works very hard to do a lot of things for other people.

  78. But in truth, even they cannot measure up to the righteous, holy, perfect standard of God Almighty.

  79. This is why Jesus says a little earlier in Matthew 5, verse 20,

    Matthew 5:20

  80. I tell you that unless this righteousness that you're seeking exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  81. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  82. And that's scary because they were the best.

  83. They were the most upstanding.

  84. They were the most moral.

  85. They were the most religious.

  86. And Jesus is saying, you have to even go way above that

  87. because even what they do falls short of the righteousness that God requires.

  88. So it's not an outward righteousness to show how good we look.

  89. It's an inward righteousness that shows how powerful and gracious God is.

  90. So that is one of the main themes in this is not just how to be a good person,

  91. how to treat other people,

  92. but it's how to actually be righteous in the sight of God

  93. and what righteousness looks like in everyday living.

  94. The second thing that's kind of pointed out by Jesus throughout the Sermon on the Mount

  95. is the religious leaders of the day were twisting.

  96. They were perverting God's actual commands.

  97. In Jesus' time, there were many misinterpretations and twistings of the Old Testament Scripture.

  98. And multiple times throughout this sermon, verse 21, 27, 33, 38,

  99. you'll see Jesus kind of saying this,

  100. you have heard it said,

  101. and then he'll refer to something that the religious leaders taught.

  102. And then he'll go on and he'll actually correct that and say,

  103. but I say to you.

  104. And that is kind of where we find ourselves today

  105. in the midst of another commandment that they have twisted.

  106. And today is clearing up the misconception that you're to love the people that are close to you

  107. and to love your neighbors, but you're to hate and despise your enemies.

  108. So it's a perversion of God's command to love.

  109. And so we will read our text today.

  110. Finally, right?

  111. So Matthew 5, verse 43.

    Matthew 5:43

  112. You have heard it said,

  113. You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

  114. But I say to you,

  115. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

  116. so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.

  117. For he makes his son rise on the evil and on the good,

  118. and he sends rain on the just and the unjust.

  119. For if you only love those who love you,

  120. what reward do you have?

  121. Do not even tax collectors do the same?

  122. And if you greet only your brothers,

  123. what more are you doing than others?

  124. Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

  125. You, therefore,

  126. must be perfect

  127. as your heavenly Father

  128. is perfect.

  129. Just join me in prayer.

  130. Father, we come to you this morning

  131. very needy,

  132. very broken,

  133. and we're in need of Jesus this morning.

  134. And I pray that

  135. whether we know him

  136. or we don't know him,

  137. he would be

  138. working in our minds,

  139. in our hearts,

  140. speaking life into us

  141. through your word.

  142. And so, Lord,

  143. we just offer this time

  144. as an act of worship,

  145. and I pray for those here

  146. who may not know you,

  147. who are separated from you

  148. because of their sin,

  149. that they would see very clearly

  150. the love that you have displayed

  151. through the person and work

  152. of Jesus Christ.

  153. I ask that in his name.

  154. Amen.

  155. So, in our text,

  156. we see very clearly

  157. that Jesus is saying,

  158. you've misunderstood

  159. this commandment.

  160. You've heard it said

  161. to hate your enemy.

  162. And this is, again,

  163. a twisting

  164. of what the Scripture says.

  165. So, does the Scripture

  166. actually say that

  167. in the Old Testament?

  168. No, not at all.

  169. Actually,

  170. quite the opposite

  171. in a lot of ways.

  172. But in the Law of Moses

  173. in Leviticus,

    Leviticus 19 chapter mention

  174. chapter 19,

  175. you read in verses 18 and 34,

  176. this is the actual commandment.

  177. You shall not take vengeance

  178. or bear a grudge

  179. against the sons

  180. of your own people,

  181. but you shall love

  182. your neighbor as yourself.

  183. I am the Lord.

  184. You shall treat the stranger

  185. who sojourns with you

  186. as the native among you,

  187. and you shall love him

  188. as yourself.

  189. For you were strangers

  190. in the land of Egypt.

  191. I am the Lord your God.

  192. And somehow,

  193. they had figured out a way

  194. to kind of twist this

  195. into justification

  196. to have hatred

  197. towards their enemies

  198. when that's not

  199. what it says at all.

  200. But to be sure,

  201. before we kind of stand

  202. in our context today

  203. and look back at

  204. the scribes

  205. and the Pharisees

  206. and a bunch of religious

  207. hypocrites,

  208. we definitely do

  209. the same thing.

  210. We, all the time,

  211. we do the same thing.

  212. We twist what God's word

  213. actually says

  214. to make it fit

  215. a lifestyle that we want.

  216. So, we need to be clear

  217. about what God says

  218. about certain things.

  219. And so, Scripture never says

  220. that anyone should maliciously

  221. hate his or her enemy.

  222. Quite the opposite.

  223. God's hatred of sin

  224. and God's hatred of evil

  225. is a theme

  226. in the Old Testament.

  227. And he often chooses,

  228. as we can read,

  229. to execute judgment

  230. on those people

  231. that are against him.

  232. So, here's a mystery,

  233. though, to me.

  234. It's a mystery,

  235. and it's something

  236. that we should just

  237. stand in awe of.

  238. Even though God chooses,

  239. at his appointed time,

  240. to execute judgment

  241. on sinners,

  242. there is something

  243. in the heart of God

  244. that still does not

  245. delight in just

  246. destroying people.

  247. Let me be clear.

  248. God says in

  249. Ezekiel 18.23,

  250. I have no pleasure

  251. in the death

  252. of the wicked.

  253. The Scripture indicates

  254. that God does destroy

  255. the wicked,

  256. but it's not done

  257. in like a giddy

  258. spirit of excitement.

  259. It's not done

  260. with like maniacal

  261. enthusiasm.

  262. He destroys the wicked

  263. with a noble

  264. and heavy heart.

  265. It's not something

  266. he's just jumping

  267. up and down about.

  268. But he does it

  269. because he's going

  270. to be just,

  271. and he's going

  272. to display his righteousness

  273. and do what's right.

  274. But just think about that.

  275. He is destroying

  276. those who

  277. were created

  278. in his image,

  279. but are now broken

  280. and shattered

  281. because of sin

  282. and are rebelling

  283. against him.

  284. It is a mystery,

  285. but God takes

  286. no pleasure

  287. in the destruction

  288. of the wicked.

  289. He feels something

  290. for them.

  291. There's immense

  292. complexity

  293. in the heart

  294. of God.

  295. Not contradictive,

  296. but something

  297. that we as

  298. fallen,

  299. broken human beings

  300. can't really

  301. understand.

  302. So there are

  303. full,

  304. many different

  305. exhortations

  306. in the Old Testament

  307. to care for

  308. one's enemies.

  309. Proverbs 24,

  310. 17 says this,

  311. Do not rejoice

  312. when your enemy

  313. falls,

  314. and let not your

  315. heart be glad

  316. when he stumbles.

  317. Even King David

  318. expresses such a

  319. heartfelt grief

  320. towards his enemy,

  321. King Saul.

  322. He has broken

  323. over the man

  324. who is seeking

  325. to kill him.

  326. So,

  327. Jesus is pointing

  328. out that the

  329. Jewish religious

  330. leaders have

  331. figured out a way

  332. to look at

  333. people who are

  334. non-Jews and say

  335. they are not my

  336. neighbor,

  337. they are my enemy,

  338. and I should hate

  339. them.

  340. They saw that

  341. your neighbor was

  342. only your fellow

  343. Israelite.

  344. Jews should love

  345. other Jews.

  346. Everyone else

  347. was considered

  348. considered an enemy,

  349. a Gentile

  350. treated as an

  351. enemy.

  352. So,

  353. as we begin

  354. to unpack this,

  355. Jesus is correcting

  356. this false teaching.

  357. And so,

  358. as Nathan kind of

  359. said last week,

  360. this is not about

  361. the state's

  362. authority to

  363. defend itself

  364. and declare war.

  365. This is not about

  366. whether or not

  367. you should have

  368. the right to

  369. defend yourself

  370. if attacked.

  371. This is not

  372. the context of

  373. what we're

  374. talking about.

  375. Those are topics

  376. that we could

  377. talk about

  378. another time.

  379. If you ask me,

  380. we'll talk about it.

  381. But this is not

  382. the main point

  383. of what Jesus

  384. is emphasizing

  385. today.

  386. So,

  387. I want you to

  388. examine your

  389. heart as we

  390. unpack this.

  391. And here's why.

  392. This commandment

  393. to love our

  394. enemies

  395. reveals every

  396. potential

  397. deficiency

  398. in our

  399. understanding

  400. of the

  401. gospel.

  402. And it also

  403. reveals every

  404. potential

  405. deficiency

  406. in our

  407. obedience

  408. to that

  409. gospel.

  410. Are you

  411. tempted to

  412. think that?

  413. Are you

  414. tempted to

  415. think,

  416. yeah,

  417. okay,

  418. but what

  419. about those

  420. people?

  421. Or what

  422. about this

  423. guy?

  424. I get it,

  425. but still,

  426. should I love

  427. this guy?

  428. Surely there's

  429. some sort of

  430. exception to

  431. the rule.

  432. And when we

  433. seek to wiggle

  434. free of those

  435. words,

  436. of this command,

  437. we're minimizing

  438. the gospel

  439. behind that

  440. command.

  441. So,

  442. pay attention

  443. and examine

  444. your hearts.

  445. Ask God to

  446. search you.

  447. So,

  448. we're going to

  449. unpack this

  450. in asking

  451. three questions.

  452. Number one,

  453. who is our

  454. enemy?

  455. Right?

  456. Who is our

  457. enemy?

  458. We can see it

  459. in verse 34

  460. that in one

  461. sense,

  462. it's those

  463. who persecute

  464. you.

  465. People on

  466. whose account

  467. you are

  468. suffering

  469. because of

  470. Christ.

  471. Those who

  472. are acting

  473. hostile

  474. towards you

  475. because of

  476. your relationship

  477. with him.

  478. The word

  479. actually kind

  480. of implies

  481. people who

  482. are pursuing

  483. you,

  484. actively pursuing

  485. you with

  486. great hostility

  487. in order to

  488. inflict harm

  489. on you

  490. or mistreat

  491. you,

  492. in the hopes

  493. that they will

  494. cause you to

  495. flee,

  496. or drive

  497. you away.

  498. That's kind

  499. of what

  500. persecution

  501. means,

  502. at least in a

  503. grammatical sense

  504. of the word.

  505. And it's done

  506. because of your

  507. faith in Christ.

  508. It's because of

  509. your attachment

  510. and relationship

  511. to him.

  512. We know

  513. that during

  514. the past

  515. century,

  516. there have

  517. been more

  518. Christian martyrs

  519. in the world

  520. than all the

  521. previous centuries

  522. combined.

  523. Just in

  524. 2018,

  525. okay,

  526. three days

  527. ago,

  528. in Sri

  529. Lanka,

  530. a pastor,

  531. his wife,

  532. and two

  533. other believers

  534. were walking

  535. home from a

  536. birthday party

  537. of a fellow

  538. believer,

  539. and they'd

  540. been experiencing

  541. some hostility

  542. from local

  543. Buddhists.

  544. And as they

  545. were walking

  546. home,

  547. attackers began

  548. yelling things

  549. at them

  550. and began

  551. throwing really

  552. big stones

  553. at them.

  554. It struck

  555. his wife

  556. and one

  557. of the

  558. other women

  559. with them

  560. injured

  561. them severely.

  562. April 10th,

  563. just April

  564. 10th,

  565. Hindu

  566. activists

  567. burned down

  568. the home

  569. of a pastor

  570. who had a

  571. wife and

  572. three children.

  573. and they

  574. were on

  575. their way

  576. home from

  577. an all-night

  578. prayer meeting

  579. and they

  580. were getting

  581. angry at the

  582. evangelistic work

  583. that he was

  584. doing among

  585. the Hindus

  586. there,

  587. and so they

  588. burned down

  589. his house

  590. and have

  591. been trying

  592. to force him

  593. out of that

  594. area.

  595. This past

  596. July,

  597. in Nigeria,

  598. militant

  599. Muslims

  600. attacked Christian

  601. villages,

  602. killing around

  603. 200 and

  604. forcing thousands

  605. to be displaced.

  606. And very

  607. recently,

  608. in Columbia,

  609. where we sent

  610. a dear brother

  611. of ours

  612. recently,

  613. a pastor

  614. there who

  615. was doing

  616. gospel work

  617. in one of

  618. the most

  619. dangerous,

  620. poorest areas

  621. in Columbia,

  622. he constantly

  623. received death

  624. threats from

  625. paramilitary

  626. groups and

  627. guerrillas and

  628. members of

  629. street gangs.

  630. So he's been

  631. warned you'll

  632. be killed if

  633. you don't

  634. leave,

  635. if you

  636. don't

  637. stop this,

  638. but he's

  639. remaining

  640. faithful among

  641. the other

  642. Christians who

  643. are there to

  644. lead them.

  645. And they've

  646. chosen to

  647. stick it out

  648. there because

  649. they say

  650. Christ has

  651. taught us

  652. to love

  653. our enemies.

  654. And it

  655. goes on that

  656. since they've

  657. stuck it out

  658. and really

  659. asked God

  660. to work,

  661. they're starting

  662. to change the

  663. attitude of the

  664. community around

  665. them.

  666. People are

  667. starting to

  668. respect them

  669. and wonder

  670. why in the

  671. heck they're

  672. there.

  673. So according

  674. to Jesus

  675. in our

  676. text,

  677. persecution

  678. doesn't

  679. necessarily

  680. have to be

  681. violent,

  682. meaning it

  683. might not

  684. put you in

  685. the hospital

  686. or in

  687. prison or

  688. in the

  689. grave.

  690. Earlier in

  691. the discourse,

  692. Jesus lumps

  693. in insults

  694. and slander

  695. with persecution.

  696. Verse 11,

  697. blessed are

  698. you when

  699. others revile

  700. you and

  701. persecute

  702. you and

  703. utter all

  704. kinds of

  705. evil against

  706. you falsely

  707. on my

  708. account.

  709. So many

  710. American

  711. Christians,

  712. we're so

  713. weak and

  714. we're so

  715. soft and

  716. we're so

  717. overly

  718. sensitive that

  719. that would

  720. seem like the

  721. most violent

  722. thing in the

  723. world to us,

  724. but put in

  725. perspective in

  726. many other

  727. places in the

  728. world and in

  729. the context in

  730. which Jesus

  731. is speaking,

  732. it's not

  733. really worthy

  734. to be

  735. compared.

  736. But he

  737. says,

  738. nonetheless,

  739. Paul said,

  740. when we are

  741. reviled,

  742. we bless.

  743. And so,

  744. persecution,

  745. those who

  746. persecute you

  747. are in the

  748. category of

  749. an enemy,

  750. but we are

  751. to love them.

  752. To go on a

  753. little further,

  754. if you look at

  755. our text,

  756. it could really

  757. just mean

  758. those who

  759. oppose your

  760. desires,

  761. those who

  762. are set

  763. against you.

  764. Many

  765. Christians,

  766. I've heard

  767. it even

  768. this past

  769. week,

  770. someone who

  771. would say

  772. that they

  773. are a

  774. follower of

  775. Jesus,

  776. quote,

  777. I hate

  778. those darn

  779. liberal

  780. Democrats.

  781. And on

  782. the other

  783. side,

  784. I hate

  785. those

  786. conservative

  787. Republicans.

  788. Some of

  789. you wouldn't

  790. consider

  791. Republicans

  792. conservative,

  793. but nonetheless,

  794. we have all

  795. these divisions

  796. that take

  797. precedence over

  798. who we are

  799. in the

  800. kingdom of

  801. God.

  802. And that's

  803. total nonsense.

  804. There's so much

  805. junk like that

  806. in the church

  807. today.

  808. We love or

  809. despise someone

  810. based on their

  811. political views,

  812. their social

  813. background,

  814. or their

  815. ethnic background,

  816. instead of our

  817. identity as

  818. children of the

  819. Most High.

  820. God

  821. and the

  822. gospel demands

  823. that we

  824. love all

  825. who oppose

  826. our personal

  827. desires.

  828. It's a

  829. demand.

  830. For God

  831. himself is

  832. kind to

  833. those who

  834. oppose him.

  835. So,

  836. to carry it

  837. one more

  838. step further,

  839. if you kind

  840. of look at

  841. our text,

  842. an enemy

  843. could really

  844. be summed

  845. up as

  846. those

  847. who don't

  848. love you

  849. are someone

  850. who is not

  851. your brother.

  852. another

  853. illustration

  854. of an

  855. enemy.

  856. If you

  857. love those

  858. who love

  859. you,

  860. what reward

  861. have you?

  862. Do not

  863. even tax

  864. collectors

  865. do the

  866. same.

  867. And if

  868. you greet

  869. your brothers

  870. only,

  871. what do

  872. you do

  873. more than

  874. others?

  875. So,

  876. you might

  877. consider

  878. yourself

  879. a loving

  880. person.

  881. You might

  882. consider

  883. someone you

  884. know to

  885. be a

  886. very loving

  887. person.

  888. But,

  889. how far

  890. does that

  891. love extend

  892. to those

  893. who oppose

  894. you,

  895. those who

  896. are different

  897. than you?

  898. Jesus

  899. presses this

  900. point with

  901. unusual force,

  902. as if he's

  903. saying,

  904. yeah,

  905. even the

  906. tax collectors,

  907. the people

  908. that you

  909. despise and

  910. consider to

  911. be outsiders

  912. and traitors,

  913. even they

  914. love the

  915. people who

  916. love them.

  917. What's so

  918. special about

  919. this kind

  920. of love

  921. that you

  922. think you

  923. have,

  924. if that's

  925. where it

  926. stops?

  927. Then he

  928. goes on

  929. and says,

  930. even pagan

  931. non-believers

  932. who don't

  933. even know

  934. God,

  935. they care

  936. about the

  937. people who

  938. care about

  939. them,

  940. and they

  941. greet those

  942. who love

  943. them.

  944. He is

  945. saying that

  946. the gospel

  947. demands a

  948. different kind

  949. of love,

  950. that is an

  951. extraordinary

  952. godly love

  953. that is to be

  954. demonstrated by

  955. believers.

  956. If you

  957. consider

  958. someone

  959. on the

  960. news,

  961. we always

  962. seem to be

  963. pittered against

  964. different

  965. countries a

  966. lot of

  967. the time,

  968. Muslim

  969. countries,

  970. for example,

  971. we should

  972. see them

  973. as captive

  974. to the

  975. enemy and

  976. be broken

  977. hearted for

  978. them.

  979. I have a

  980. couple of

  981. dear friends

  982. of mine

  983. who were

  984. in the

  985. army,

  986. they served

  987. in the

  988. ranger

  989. regiment,

  990. and they

  991. have been

  992. deployed

  993. multiple times

  994. to Iraq,

  995. Afghanistan,

  996. other places,

  997. and because

  998. of these

  999. brothers'

  1000. love for

  1001. Jesus,

  1002. they realized,

  1003. man, this

  1004. is not

  1005. going to

  1006. solve the

  1007. real problem.

  1008. And now

  1009. that they

  1010. are out

  1011. of the

  1012. army,

  1013. they have

  1014. moved

  1015. themselves

  1016. and their

  1017. families to

  1018. closed,

  1019. dangerous

  1020. places in

  1021. the Middle

  1022. East to

  1023. share the

  1024. gospel with

  1025. Muslims.

  1026. that's

  1027. loving your

  1028. enemy.

  1029. So, to

  1030. go on, the

  1031. second question,

  1032. that is, the

  1033. first question

  1034. was, who

  1035. are our

  1036. enemies?

  1037. The second

  1038. question, what

  1039. does this

  1040. look like?

  1041. What kind

  1042. of, how

  1043. does this

  1044. love look,

  1045. look, excuse

  1046. me, what

  1047. does this

  1048. love look

  1049. like, is

  1050. the question.

  1051. All right, so in

1052. other words, how do we

  1053. manifest this

  1054. love?

  1055. How do we

  1056. actually carry

  1057. out this

  1058. love?

  1059. Well, first

  1060. of all, we

  1061. see in our

  1062. text, to

  1063. pray for

  1064. them.

  1065. Praying for

  1066. our enemies

  1067. is a

  1068. humble

  1069. recognition

  1070. from God's

  1071. saving grace

  1072. towards us.

  1073. We would

  1074. be just as

  1075. evil as

  1076. they are, and

  1077. just as

  1078. lost as

  1079. they are, had

  1080. not God

  1081. saved us.

  1082. And it

  1083. recognizes

  1084. that unless

  1085. God acts

  1086. grace and

  1087. grant them

  1088. mercy, they

  1089. will remain

  1090. in that

  1091. place of

  1092. judgment.

  1093. So nothing

  1094. will transform

  1095. your heart

  1096. towards the

  1097. one you

  1098. consider to

  1099. be your

  1100. enemy than

  1101. getting on

  1102. your knees

  1103. before God

  1104. and pleading

  1105. with him on

  1106. their behalf.

  1107. Nothing will

  1108. change your

  1109. heart more.

  1110. When you're on

  1111. your knees

  1112. praying for

  1113. them, you

  1114. might do nice

  1115. things for

  1116. them, kind

  1117. of on the

  1118. surface, but

  1119. then behind

  1120. the scenes,

  1121. you're kind

  1122. of grumbling

  1123. about them and

  1124. despising them.

  1125. but praying

  1126. for them, getting

  1127. on your knees

  1128. in the presence

  1129. of God, who

  1130. knows your

  1131. heart and

  1132. has full

  1133. awareness of

  1134. your intentions

  1135. towards those

  1136. people, that

  1137. changes you.

  1138. Paul prayed

  1139. for his fellow

  1140. Jews that

  1141. hated him.

  1142. He says,

  1143. brothers, my

  1144. heart desire is

  1145. for them to

  1146. be saved.

  1147. And in doing

  1148. this, we

  1149. portray our

  1150. suffering,

  1151. crucified Lord,

  1152. when he

  1153. prayed.

  1154. for his

  1155. enemies.

  1156. Even in the

  1157. worst possible

  1158. position, Father,

  1159. forgive them, for

  1160. they know not

  1161. what they do.

  1162. So, the

  1163. first way we

  1164. actually can

  1165. manifest out love

  1166. towards those

  1167. that we might

  1168. consider an

  1169. enemy is to

  1170. pray for them, to

  1171. intercede on

  1172. their behalf before

  1173. God.

  1174. And then to go

  1175. on, it is

  1176. simply dismeaned

  1177. from our text,

  1178. just to greet

  1179. them.

  1180. If you greet

  1181. those who only

  1182. greet you, right?

  1183. To greet

  1184. someone means

  1185. to warmly

  1186. welcome them,

  1187. to receive

  1188. one joyfully.

  1189. To greet

  1190. someone does not

  1191. just mean that

  1192. you kind of

  1193. begrudgingly shake

  1194. their hand and

  1195. put on a fake

  1196. smile and a fake

  1197. conversation and

  1198. then forget about

  1199. them.

  1200. It's not just a

  1201. touch-and-go

  1202. thing.

  1203. It means extending

  1204. a friendly welcome

  1205. to one who you

  1206. consider to be an

  1207. outsider, to

  1208. someone who is

  1209. opposed to you.

  1210. So who do you

  1211. welcome and

  1212. greet into your

  1213. life and

  1214. welcome into

  1215. your home?

  1216. Is it those

  1217. who you know

  1218. that will repay

  1219. you and greet

  1220. you as well and

  1221. love you as well

  1222. or someone that

  1223. you know would

  1224. not love you in

  1225. return?

  1226. So if that's the

  1227. case, like,

  1228. where and what

  1229. kind of love are

  1230. we displaying to

  1231. the world?

  1232. What's so special

  1233. about us?

  1234. to go on.

  1235. A third way we

  1236. can manifest the

  1237. love of Christ to

  1238. other people, also

  1239. seen in the word

  1240. here, is to meet

  1241. their needs.

  1242. Know that true

  1243. love for others

  1244. actually takes

  1245. action on behalf

  1246. of that person.

  1247. We all know

  1248. that.

  1249. We don't just

  1250. want lip service.

  1251. We actually want

  1252. what we say to

  1253. manifest itself in

  1254. real life in

  1255. action.

  1256. not just words.

  1257. And so though

  1258. God hates evil,

  1259. he still brings

  1260. many blessings

  1261. in the life of

  1262. his enemies.

  1263. Jesus says,

  1264. for he makes

  1265. his son rise

  1266. on the evil

  1267. and on the good.

  1268. And he sends

  1269. rain on the

  1270. just and the

  1271. unjust.

  1272. It says in

  1273. verse 45.

  1274. And in Luke's

  1275. account of this

  1276. gospel passage,

  1277. this is what he

  1278. says,

  1279. this,

  1280. God himself is

  1281. kind to the

  1282. ungrateful and

  1283. evil.

  1284. So this is what

  1285. we would call

  1286. theologically

  1287. speaking,

  1288. common grace,

  1289. meaning that it's

  1290. the grace of God

  1291. and the blessings

  1292. of God that

  1293. extend to all

  1294. people,

  1295. regardless of

  1296. whether they are

  1297. saved or not.

  1298. God graciously

  1299. extends his love

  1300. to his enemies.

  1301. So as true

  1302. children of God,

  1303. we're to imitate

  1304. such love

  1305. towards our

  1306. enemies.

  1307. And in such a

  1308. way where it

  1309. leaves them

  1310. puzzled,

  1311. asking why,

  1312. like what kind

  1313. of power is

  1314. behind this

  1315. person to

  1316. enable them

  1317. to love me

  1318. in this way,

  1319. asking them

  1320. why.

  1321. Paul says

  1322. in Romans

    Romans 12:17

  1323. 12,

  1324. verse 17,

  1325. he says,

  1326. to the contrary,

  1327. and then he

  1328. goes on to

  1329. quote from

  1330. the Old

  1331. Testament and

  1332. Proverbs.

  1333. He says,

  1334. if your enemy

  1335. is hungry,

  1336. feed him.

  1337. If he's thirsty,

  1338. give him

  1339. something to

  1340. drink.

  1341. For by doing

  1342. so, you will

  1343. heap burning

  1344. coals on his

  1345. head.

  1346. Do not be

  1347. overcome by

  1348. evil, but

  1349. overcome evil

  1350. with good.

  1351. Have you ever

  1352. done that for

  1353. someone who

  1354. opposed you,

  1355. done something,

  1356. an act of

  1357. kindness to

  1358. serve them to

  1359. meet your need

  1360. and they were

  1361. astonished?

  1362. This is the

  1363. kind of

  1364. lower to

  1365. display.

  1366. And so,

  1367. the third

  1368. question,

  1369. the last

  1370. question,

  1371. is how can

  1372. we love

  1373. our enemies?

  1374. So, in

  1375. other words,

  1376. like, what

  1377. enables us,

  1378. what is the

  1379. power behind

  1380. this to

  1381. motivate us to

  1382. do such a

  1383. thing as love

  1384. our enemies?

  1385. That's a good

  1386. question, because

  1387. humanly speaking,

  1388. it's impossible.

  1389. I'm not good

  1390. at loving

  1391. people I

  1392. don't like,

  1393. or that are

  1394. opposed to

  1395. me.

  1396. I've even

  1397. gone through

  1398. seasons in

  1399. my life,

  1400. and this

  1401. has convict

  1402. me, where

  1403. I walk

  1404. around just

  1405. sizing people

  1406. up that I

  1407. think look

  1408. either hostile

  1409. towards me or

  1410. different than

  1411. me, instead

  1412. of feeling a

  1413. heart of

  1414. compassion towards

  1415. them.

  1416. This kind

  1417. of love

  1418. cannot be

  1419. faked.

  1420. It cannot

  1421. be imitated

  1422. in a false

  1423. way.

  1424. The love

  1425. that we need

  1426. to have for

  1427. these people

  1428. comes only by

  1429. the gospel

  1430. alone, and

  1431. only by the

  1432. power of

  1433. Jesus Christ

  1434. working through

  1435. us alone.

  1436. So, here

  1437. are three

  1438. things,

  1439. under this

  1440. question,

  1441. of motivations

  1442. or powers

  1443. behind the

  1444. ability to

  1445. love our

  1446. enemies.

  1447. Number one

  1448. is, God

  1449. will carry

  1450. out justice.

  1451. All right?

  1452. We're always

  1453. afraid to

  1454. think if we

  1455. just let

  1456. this go, if

  1457. we don't

  1458. repay them

  1459. for the

  1460. wrong they've

  1461. done to

  1462. us, they're

  1463. just going

  1464. to get

  1465. away.

  1466. They're

  1467. going to

  1468. go unpunished

  1469. and justice

  1470. will not be

  1471. done.

  1472. But what God

  1473. is saying is

  1474. be confident,

  1475. I will

  1476. handle this.

  1477. I will

  1478. deal with

  1479. this person.

  1480. Turn to

  1481. Romans 12.

  1482. We're going to

  1483. look at a

  1484. couple passages

  1485. in Romans

  1486. before we

  1487. close.

  1488. Romans 12,

  1489. go to

  1490. verse 17.

  1491. So, we're

  1492. unable to

  1493. love our

  1494. enemies because

  1495. we know at

  1496. the end of

  1497. the day,

  1498. God is

  1499. going to

  1500. carry out

  1501. justice.

  1502. Even if

  1503. they get

  1504. away with

  1505. things in

  1506. this life,

  1507. they won't

  1508. in eternity.

  1509. They will be

  1510. brought before

  1511. the judgment

  1512. seed of

  1513. God and

  1514. he will

  1515. deal with

  1516. it.

  1517. Romans 12,

    Romans 12:17

  1518. verse 17.

  1519. Repay no

  1520. one evil

  1521. for evil,

  1522. but give

  1523. thought to

  1524. do what is

  1525. honorable in

  1526. the sight of

  1527. all.

  1528. If possible,

  1529. so far as it

  1530. depends on

  1531. you, live

  1532. peaceably

  1533. with all.

  1534. Beloved,

  1535. never

  1536. avenge

  1537. yourselves,

  1538. but leave

  1539. it to the

  1540. wrath of

  1541. God.

  1542. For it is

  1543. written,

  1544. vengeance

  1545. is mine.

  1546. I will

  1547. repay,

  1548. says the

  1549. Lord.

  1550. That is

  1551. a big

  1552. struggle for

  1553. me because

  1554. I always

  1555. want to

  1556. see justice

  1557. done.

  1558. If someone

  1559. has wronged

  1560. me, I

  1561. want to

  1562. see them

  1563. paid back.

  1564. Some of

  1565. you are

  1566. just better

  1567. than me,

  1568. I guess,

  1569. but I'm

  1570. very quick

  1571. to want

  1572. justice to

  1573. be done,

  1574. not forgetting

  1575. that if

  1576. God treated

  1577. me that

  1578. way, I

  1579. would be

  1580. separated.

  1581. from

  1582. him.

  1583. So we

  1584. are to

  1585. repay evil

  1586. with good.

  1587. God will

  1588. settle it.

  1589. Just trust

  1590. him.

  1591. We can

  1592. put that

  1593. in his

  1594. hands.

  1595. He will

  1596. carry out

  1597. justice.

  1598. With such

  1599. a holy

  1600. and sovereign

  1601. vow from

  1602. Almighty God,

  1603. we can

  1604. believe that.

  1605. Don't feel

  1606. like someone

  1607. is going to

  1608. get away

  1609. with their

  1610. sin.

  1611. And then

  1612. secondly,

  1613. another

  1614. motivation,

  1615. another

  1616. empowering,

  1617. so that

  1618. you'll

  1619. prove your

  1620. sonship.

  1621. Look at

  1622. verse 45.

  1623. We don't

  1624. have to

  1625. because you

  1626. just turn,

  1627. but verse

  1628. 45,

  1629. Jesus says

  1630. about loving

  1631. your enemies

  1632. so that

  1633. you may be

  1634. sons of

  1635. your Father

  1636. who is in

  1637. heaven.

  1638. So loving

  1639. others the

  1640. way God

  1641. loved doesn't

  1642. make us

  1643. his children,

  1644. but what

  1645. it does

  1646. do is

  1647. it proves,

  1648. it evidences

  1649. that we do

  1650. belong to

  1651. God because

  1652. that kind

  1653. of love,

  1654. again,

  1655. can't just

  1656. be faked.

  1657. It can't

  1658. be created

  1659. by human

  1660. ability so

  1661. that if we

  1662. love the

  1663. way that

  1664. God does,

  1665. we evidence

  1666. ourselves to

  1667. be his

  1668. children.

  1669. It proves.

  1670. It stirs

  1671. the heart of

  1672. any parent,

  1673. though one

  1674. day I hope

  1675. to experience

  1676. this,

  1677. to be a

  1678. father,

  1679. but it

  1680. stirs any

  1681. good parent

  1682. to have

  1683. someone say

  1684. of them,

  1685. you are so

  1686. like your

  1687. father,

  1688. you are so

  1689. like your

  1690. mother.

  1691. And it is

  1692. our spiritual

  1693. DNA to

  1694. love other

  1695. people the

  1696. way that

  1697. God loves.

  1698. A supernatural

  1699. empowering kind

  1700. of love so

  1701. we can prove

  1702. our sonship.

  1703. And then

  1704. lastly,

  1705. and this is

  1706. huge,

  1707. another

  1708. motivation,

  1709. give what

  1710. you have

  1711. received.

  1712. And here

  1713. it is,

  1714. we can

  1715. love our

  1716. enemies

  1717. because we

  1718. have experienced

  1719. being loved

  1720. as an

  1721. enemy.

  1722. Many of

  1723. you have

  1724. come from

  1725. different

  1726. backgrounds

  1727. where you

  1728. are taught

  1729. God is

  1730. all-loving

  1731. and he'll

  1732. never do

  1733. anything to

  1734. hurt you

  1735. or he

  1736. won't judge

  1737. you.

  1738. On the

  1739. other side,

  1740. you might

  1741. have been

  1742. taught God

  1743. is holy

  1744. and God

  1745. is going

  1746. to destroy

  1747. you and

  1748. there's no

  1749. love in

  1750. him at

  1751. all.

  1752. And both

  1753. of those

  1754. are wrong.

  1755. Romans 5,

  1756. we'll end

  1757. things here,

  1758. but look at

  1759. Romans 5.

  1760. And I want

  1761. you to see

  1762. that God's

  1763. love is not

  1764. opposed to

  1765. his justice.

  1766. What kind

  1767. of love

  1768. God has

  1769. shown us?

  1770. Romans 5,

  1771. look at

  1772. verse 8.

  1773. It says,

  1774. God shows

  1775. his love

  1776. for us

  1777. and that

  1778. while we

  1779. were still

  1780. sinners,

  1781. Christ died

  1782. for us.

  1783. Since

  1784. therefore we

  1785. have now

  1786. been justified

  1787. by his

  1788. blood,

  1789. much more

  1790. shall I

  1791. be saved

  1792. by him

  1793. from the

  1794. wrath

  1795. of God.

  1796. So in

  1797. two verses

  1798. you see the

  1799. idea of

  1800. God's love,

  1801. you see the

  1802. reality of

  1803. God's wrath

  1804. right side

  1805. by side.

  1806. Then it

  1807. goes on in

  1808. verse 10,

  1809. for if

  1810. while we

  1811. were enemies

  1812. we were

  1813. reconciled to

  1814. God by the

  1815. death of

  1816. his son,

  1817. much more

  1818. now that we

  1819. are reconciled

  1820. shall we

  1821. be saved

  1822. by his

  1823. life.

  1824. And more

  1825. than that,

  1826. we also

  1827. rejoice in

  1828. God through

  1829. our Lord

  1830. Jesus Christ

  1831. through whom

  1832. we have now

  1833. received

  1834. reconciliation.

  1835. So this

  1836. so extraordinary

  1837. is the love

  1838. of our

  1839. father.

  1840. It extends

  1841. beyond his

  1842. kingdom to

  1843. his enemies.

  1844. God

  1845. demonstrated

  1846. his great

  1847. love in

  1848. the while

  1849. we were

  1850. rebelling

  1851. against him,

  1852. not while

  1853. we were

  1854. all put

  1855. together

  1856. and good

  1857. people,

  1858. but while

  1859. we were

  1860. his enemies,

  1861. while we

  1862. were still

  1863. in that

  1864. place of

  1865. rebellion,

  1866. God

  1867. demonstrated

  1868. his love

  1869. towards us

  1870. by sending

  1871. his beloved

  1872. son to

  1873. die the

  1874. death that

  1875. we deserve

  1876. and to

  1877. give us

  1878. the life

  1879. that we

  1880. cannot

  1881. live.

  1882. He died

  1883. in our

  1884. place.

  1885. God

  1886. demands

  1887. that we

  1888. recognize

  1889. this as

  1890. those who

  1891. belong to

  1892. him.

  1893. We were

  1894. separated

  1895. from him

  1896. and Jesus

  1897. restored us

  1898. back to

  1899. him so

  1900. that we

  1901. can know

  1902. him,

  1903. have

  1904. relationship

  1905. with him,

  1906. that we

  1907. can once

  1908. again reflect

  1909. who he

  1910. was and

  1911. glorify him

  1912. as we

  1913. were created

  1914. to do.

  1915. So if

  1916. God were

  1917. not that

  1918. generous and

  1919. merciful to

  1920. sinners,

  1921. we would

  1922. perish.

  1923. And so we

  1924. are to

  1925. reflect this

  1926. kind of love

  1927. that we

  1928. see in

  1929. the gospel.

  1930. And there's

  1931. no debate.

  1932. God loves

  1933. his enemies.

  1934. So,

  1935. in conclusion,

  1936. we see

  1937. in verse

  1938. 48,

  1939. he ends

  1940. up by

  1941. kind of

  1942. summing up

  1943. this whole

  1944. section of

  1945. the Sermon

  1946. on the

  1947. Mount by

  1948. saying,

  1949. you,

  1950. therefore,

  1951. must be

  1952. perfect as

  1953. your heavenly

  1954. Father is

  1955. perfect.

  1956. So in

  1957. case anyone

  1958. was there

  1959. listening,

  1960. saying,

  1961. that still

  1962. thought,

  1963. I can

  1964. still be

  1965. good on

  1966. my own,

  1967. I can

  1968. still achieve

  1969. right standing

  1970. with God

  1971. on my

  1972. own,

  1973. he kind

  1974. of just

  1975. throws that

  1976. out there

  1977. to sum it

  1978. up.

  1979. You must

  1980. be perfect

  1981. as your

  1982. heavenly

  1983. Father is

  1984. perfect.

  1985. Which would

  1986. have

  1987. devastated

  1988. them because

  1989. God demands

  1990. total perfection.

  1991. So he

  1992. intentionally

  1993. does that

  1994. to make

  1995. them despair

  1996. of any

  1997. kind of

  1998. self-righteousness

  1999. they have

  2000. so that

  2001. they'll

  2002. flee to

  2003. him for

  2004. salvation.

  2005. To recognize

  2006. that they

  2007. will need

  2008. a Savior,

  2009. that their

  2010. own efforts

  2011. will not

  2012. achieve it.

  2013. And that's

  2014. what he's

  2015. saying.

  2016. He's like,

  2017. I'm here.

  2018. I'm the

  2019. one who's

  2020. going to

  2021. deliver you

  2022. from your

  2023. sin.

  2024. You cannot

  2025. do this

  2026. on your

  2027. own.

  2028. And that's

  2029. the marvelous

  2030. truth of

  2031. the gospel,

  2032. that we

  2033. could not

  2034. attain

  2035. perfection.

  2036. You ever

  2037. heard anybody

  2038. say,

  2039. nobody's

  2040. perfect.

  2041. They have

  2042. no idea

  2043. the intensity

  2044. and the

  2045. truth of

  2046. what they're

  2047. saying.

  2048. No, no

  2049. one is.

  2050. And God

  2051. demands it.

  2052. You can't

  2053. achieve it

  2054. on your

  2055. own, so

  2056. you go to

  2057. Jesus.

  2058. And it

  2059. says in

  2060. 2 Corinthians

  2061. 4, 21,

  2062. for our

  2063. sake, God

  2064. made Christ

  2065. to be sin

  2066. who knew

  2067. no sin,

  2068. so that in

  2069. him we might

  2070. become the

  2071. righteousness

  2072. of God.

  2073. It can

  2074. only come,

  2075. that righteousness

  2076. only comes

  2077. when we

  2078. are saved

  2079. completely

  2080. and fully

  2081. by the

  2082. work of

  2083. Jesus

  2084. Christ.

  2085. And once

  2086. united to

  2087. him, being

  2088. saved in

  2089. him, he

  2090. enables us

  2091. to live

  2092. righteously

  2093. before other

  2094. people.

  2095. So that's

  2096. it.

  2097. That's the

  2098. beauty of

  2099. the gospel,

  2100. that God

  2101. loved his

  2102. enemies.

  2103. And so

  2104. if you

  2105. feel and

  2106. you know

  2107. that you

  2108. are separated

  2109. from him

  2110. today, he's

  2111. calling you

  2112. to come.

  2113. Be reconciled

  2114. to him

  2115. through the

  2116. death of

  2117. his son.

  2118. And if you

  2119. do belong

  2120. to Jesus,

  2121. rejoice that

  2122. he did not

  2123. treat you and

  2124. did not

  2125. treat me the

  2126. way that we

  2127. deserve to

  2128. be treated.

  2129. Let's

  2130. pray together.

  2131. Let's

  2132. pray together.

  2133. pray together.
