  1. My original plan for this morning was to preach Matthew chapter 6 and verse 1.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. ! That's not a typo on your bulletin.

  3. !

  4. It felt really just really horrible.

  5. I'm improving now and I'm certainly glad to be with you.

  6. I wasn't actually sure I was going to be here.

  7. That's why Mr. Jeff led this morning.

  8. I gave up talking about Calvin because I just wasn't sure if I was going to get to be here.

  9. As a small addition, I know that some of you hearing the name John Calvin in church,

  10. the hairs on the back of your neck might have bristled.

  11. A little bit.

  12. Sadly, in a lot of circles, John Calvin gets a bad rap.

  13. Some would say, because of his theology, that he would have been anti-mission.

  14. But in fact, the school that he led in Geneva became known as Calvin's School of Death

  15. because young men who came to train there were so compelled by the teaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  16. they went home to the places that they were from.

  17. And most of them were martyred within a year.

  18. There's a great deal of missionary zeal that came out of Calvin's work and teaching amongst those men.

  19. So I didn't think I was going to get to be here.

  20. I wasn't sure.

  21. Very glad to be with you.

  22. But I didn't really believe myself nearly prepared enough to begin Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  23. So today I've dusted off some old notes, made some revisions to them,

  24. because I want to give you a clear picture of why Christ Family Church exists.

  25. And I'll have you know that I had no idea that Jordan was going to lead us in that song

  26. before selecting this text for this morning.

  27. My prayer for this morning is that our time will be informative for you if you are new to our fellowship.

  28. It is our great desire to connect you to Christ and to his church.

  29. And if you are not new to our fellowship, that you will be reminded why the church gathers and why the church goes.

  30. Now the vision statement for Christ Family Church is as follows.

  31. I hope it's become familiar to you.

  32. Christ Family Church exists to glorify God by experiencing, proclaiming,

  33. and displaying the supremacy of Jesus Christ in all things to all peoples.

  34. Now, when we talk about vision statement, we're simply saying this is the purpose for which our church,

  35. and I would contend that all churches exist.

  36. I don't mean by this that I fell asleep one night and woke up with this statement in my mind.

  37. I don't think this is a unique thing to our fellowship,

  38. but it's a way to speak about why it is that we are called together as a people for God's praise.

  39. And it is based largely from Colossians chapter 1, verses 15 through 20,

    Colossians 1:15–20

  40. which we're going to read together now.

  41. Before I read the text, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us.

  42. It was written for His glory and our good.

  43. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  44. In Colossians chapter 1, beginning in verse 15.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  45. Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

  46. For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,

  47. whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

  48. All things were created through Him and for Him.

  49. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

  50. And He is the head of the body, the church.

  51. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,

  52. that in everything He might be preeminent.

  53. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,

  54. and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things,

  55. whether on earth or in heaven,

  56. making peace by the blood of His cross.

  57. Now, every part of God's word gives testimony about Jesus Christ.

  58. In Luke chapter 24 and verse 27, we can read the account of Jesus' appearance to two of the disciples after His resurrection,

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  59. where Luke records for us,

  60. and beginning with Moses and all the prophets,

  61. He, Jesus, interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

  62. In John chapter 5, verse 39, Jesus says of the Scriptures,

    John 5:39

  63. It is they that bear witness about Me.

  64. But of all the Bible's teaching concerning Jesus,

  65. perhaps none is more significant than the text before us today.

  66. You see, beloved, the reality of who Jesus is demands our affections and our obedience.

  67. Because if we say that we are disciples of Jesus Christ,

  68. we are not saying that we are following a mere man,

  69. but God Himself.

  70. And we have a great confidence in claiming Christ as our teacher,

  71. because the reality of who Jesus is makes sure the promises of God.

  72. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 20,

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  73. For all the promises of God find their yes in Jesus Christ.

  74. That is why it is through Him that we utter our amen to God for His glory.

  75. It is important to know that verses 15 through 18 of this morning's text

  76. are thought to be a cosmic, Christological hymn.

  77. Many scholars believe that Paul is citing a modern hymn of his day

  78. or a modern confession of his day.

  79. There are many interesting arguments to this point,

  80. but I will not bore you with my explanation of them.

  81. They consist primarily of sentence structure comparison.

  82. But the case is made that what he is doing is citing something that was common in their day.

  83. Even more important to know is the focus of this cosmic, Christological hymn.

  84. And that focus is the preeminence, or we could say, the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

  85. Last half of verse 18.

  86. That in everything He might be preeminent.

  87. Which means to be supreme or to be first in all things.

  88. Above all else.

  89. That's what it means to be preeminent.

  90. Paul also states this reality in Philippians chapter 2 verses 9 through 11 where he wrote,

    Philippians 2:9–11

  91. God has highly exalted Jesus and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name.

  92. So that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth.

  93. And every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

  94. To the glory of God the Father.

  95. So according to Paul, Christ is first in all things.

  96. He is preeminent or supreme.

  97. But how should we consider the truths contained within this text concerning the preeminence of Christ?

  98. You may already be going, okay, great.

  99. Of what importance is that to me today?

  100. The Puritan John Owen wrote in his book entitled,

  101. The Glory of Christ the Following.

  102. The revelation made of Christ in the blessed gospel is far more excellent,

  103. more glorious,

  104. more filled with rays of divine wisdom and goodness

  105. that the whole creation and the just comprehension of it,

  106. if attainable, can contain or afford.

  107. Without this knowledge,

  108. the mind of man,

  109. priding itself in other inventions and discoveries,

  110. is wrapped up in darkness and confusion.

  111. This, therefore, deserves the severest of our thoughts,

  112. the best of our meditations,

  113. and our utmost diligence in them.

  114. For if our future blessedness shall consist in living where he is

  115. and beholding his glory,

  116. what better preparation can there be for it

  117. than a constant previous contemplation of that glory

  118. as revealed in the gospel,

  119. that by a view of it we may be gradually transformed

  120. into the same glory.

  121. The Christian eternity will be filled with the wonderment of Christ.

  122. So we should seek to know him now,

  123. that he might be exalted in our minds and in our lives.

  124. You could say that we need to rightly understand the supremacy of Jesus Christ

  125. so that we would experience,

  126. proclaim,

  127. and display his excellencies in all things to all peoples.

  128. What we think about Jesus Christ

  129. is going to influence everything else that we do.

  130. Let me then encourage a constant previous contemplation.

  131. And to help you do so,

  132. let us consider the text together in the following structure.

  133. So number one, this is the outline for our text,

  134. and I'll go back through it with great care.

  135. Number one, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is God.

  136. We see this in verses 15 and verse 19.

  137. Secondly, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is the Lord of the universe.

  138. Verses 16 and 17.

  139. Third, Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is the head of the church.

  140. Verse 18.

  141. And fourth,

  142. Jesus Christ is preeminent because of his redemptive work.

  143. Verse 20.

  144. So firstly,

  145. Jesus Christ is preeminent because he is God.

  146. Verse 15,

  147. Paul writes,

  148. He is the image of the invisible God,

  149. the firstborn of all creation.

  150. Paul says that by looking at Jesus,

  151. we see an image of God.

  152. The Greek word here is icon.

  153. Image or likeness.

  154. We're familiar with this term in our day.

  155. Something that represents something else.

  156. The scriptures refer to man as the icon of God.

  157. But we are not perfectly so.

  158. Much like a shattered piece of glass returns a poor reflection,

  159. so it is with us.

  160. Jesus, however,

  161. is both the perfect representation and the perfect manifestation of God.

  162. The man without sin.

  163. Created in God's likeness.

  164. Hebrews chapter 1,

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  165. the first half of verse 3 tells us

  166. that Jesus is the radiance of the glory of God

  167. and the exact imprint,

  168. or the Greek word we get facsimile from,

  169. the exact facsimile of his nature.

  170. Christ shines forth God's attributes

  171. as the sun gives light and heat to the earth.

  172. Jesus is himself God.

  173. John chapter 1 and verse 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  174. in the beginning was the Word,

  175. and the Word was with God,

  176. and the Word was God.

  177. So as we behold Jesus Christ,

  178. we behold God the Father.

  179. Paul proceeds to describe Jesus as the firstborn.

  180. And the Greek word here can mean simply firstborn.

  181. It can have a chronological in the family meaning to it.

  182. But it is most commonly used to refer to someone's position or their rank.

  183. From the Arians of the early church to the Jehovah's Witnesses of our day,

  184. those who seek to repudiate the deity of Jesus Christ

  185. refer to this phrase in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  186. But they fail completely to note its context.

  187. They fail to note the following two verses

  188. in which Paul represents Jesus as the Lord of the universe,

  189. specifically verse 17,

  190. and he is before all things.

  191. He was not created.

  192. Jesus himself is the creator.

  193. And verse 19,

  194. for in him all the fullness of God

  195. was pleased to dwell.

  196. So Jesus Christ is preeminent

  197. before all things created,

  198. and in him all the fullness of God

  199. was pleased to dwell.

  200. Jesus is where all that could be known

  201. or experienced of God is to be found.

  202. This is why Jesus was able to say

  203. in John chapter 14 and verse 9,

    John 14 chapter mention

  204. whoever has seen me

  205. has seen the Father.

  206. So, Jesus Christ

  207. is preeminent

  208. because he is

  209. God.

  210. Secondly,

  211. Jesus Christ is preeminent

  212. because he is the Lord

  213. of the universe.

  214. Verses 16 and 17

  215. speak to this.

  216. For by him all things were created

  217. in heaven and on earth,

  218. visible and invisible,

  219. whether thrones or dominions

  220. or rulers or authorities,

  221. all things were created

  222. through him

  223. and for him.

  224. And he is before all things,

  225. and in him all things

  226. hold together.

  227. Jesus Christ

  228. is supreme

  229. as the creator

  230. of all things.

  231. That is everything

  232. that we can see

  233. and everything

  234. that we cannot see.

  235. They were all created

  236. by Christ

  237. and for Christ.

  238. By him

  239. and in service

  240. to him.

  241. This is an absolutely

  242. magnificent thought

  243. which should capture

  244. our minds.

  245. John confirms this

  246. in John 1,

    John 1:3

  247. verse 3.

  248. Speaking of Christ,

  249. all things were made

  250. through him

  251. and without him

  252. was not anything

  253. made

  254. that was made.

  255. The entire universe

  256. was created

  257. by him

  258. and for him.

  259. In 2012,

  260. a picture was released

  261. that the Hubble Space Telescope

  262. had captured

  263. which was the farthest

  264. ever view

  265. into the universe.

  266. A photo that reveals

  267. thousands of galaxies,

  268. billions of light years

  269. away.

  270. The picture,

  271. which is called

  272. Extreme Deep Field

  273. or XDF

  274. if you're googling it,

  275. combines

  276. ten years

  277. of Hubble telescope

  278. views

  279. of one patch

  280. of sky.

  281. It is

  282. absolutely

  283. astounding.

  284. It is

  285. incredible

  286. to look at

  287. and to behold

  288. and to imagine

  289. the vastness

  290. of the universe.

  291. I really encourage you

  292. to look it up

  293. and have your affections

  294. turned

  295. to the one

  296. who created

  297. the universe.

  298. Psalmist writes

  299. in Psalm 19,

  300. 1,

  301. the heavens

  302. declare the glory

  303. of God

  304. and the skies

  305. above

  306. proclaim

  307. his handiwork.

  308. We can now

  309. see that

  310. with technology

  311. louder

  312. than ever

  313. before.

  314. There is a

  315. greater

  316. proclamation

  317. of Jesus'

  318. supremacy

  319. as we look up

  320. to the universe

  321. that he

  322. created.

  323. It was created

  324. by him

  325. and it was

  326. created

  327. for him.

  328. Jesus Christ

  329. is preeminent

  330. as he was

  331. before all

  332. things.

  333. The beginning

  334. of verse 17.

  335. Jesus says

  336. to the Jews

  337. in John 8,

    John 8:58

  338. verse 58,

  339. Truly,

  340. truly,

  341. I say to you

  342. before Abraham

  343. was,

  344. I am.

  345. And he's there

  346. referencing Exodus

    Exodus 3:14

  347. chapter 3,

  348. verse 14,

  349. where God

  350. said to Moses,

  351. I am

  352. who I am.

  353. Jesus had

  354. no beginning

  355. and he has

  356. no end.

  357. He has

  358. no origin,

  359. but he is

  360. the originator

  361. of all

  362. things.

  363. So he is

  364. preeminent

  365. as he was

  366. before all

  367. things.

  368. And he is

  369. preeminent

  370. as the

  371. sustainer

  372. of all

  373. things.

  374. Not only

  375. creator,

  376. but also

  377. the sustainer

  378. of all

  379. things.

  380. The last

  381. part of

  382. verse 17,

  383. Paul writes,

  384. and in

  385. him all

  386. things

  387. hold

  388. together.

  389. The writer

  390. of Hebrews

  391. says in

  392. chapter 1,

  393. verse 3,

  394. he upholds

  395. the universe

  396. by the

  397. word of

  398. his power.

  399. Not only

  400. were all

  401. things created

  402. by him

  403. and set

  404. into motion

  405. by him,

  406. but all

  407. things are

  408. also

  409. sustained

  410. by him.

  411. Everything

  412. stays in

  413. its sway

  414. by the

  415. mighty

  416. word

  417. of Jesus

  418. Christ.

  419. Everything

  420. in the

  421. universe,

  422. as far as

  423. we know,

  424. at least,

  425. is made

  426. of atoms,

  427. protons,

  428. electrons,

  429. neutrons,

  430. protons and

  431. neutrons

  432. packed into

  433. a nucleus,

  434. electrons

  435. whirling

  436. about the

  437. outer edge.

  438. I've told

  439. you everything

  440. I now know

  441. about atoms.

  442. Scientists

  443. have labored

  444. over the

  445. past century

  446. to explain

  447. away the

  448. existence

  449. of God,

  450. but they

  451. have failed

  452. to explain

  453. how it is

  454. that the

  455. atom remains

  456. in its

  457. orbital

  458. state.

  459. Carl K.

  460. Darrow,

  461. a physicist,

  462. is cited

  463. in a book

  464. entitled

  465. The Atom

  466. Speaks

  467. in reference

  468. to what

  469. scientists

  470. are calling

  471. the strong

  472. nuclear

  473. force.

  474. He writes,

  475. do you

  476. grasp what

  477. this implies?

  478. It implies

  479. that all

  480. the nuclei

  481. have no

  482. right to

  483. be alive

  484. at all.

  485. Instead,

  486. they should

  487. never have

  488. been created

  489. and if

  490. created,

  491. they should

  492. have blown

  493. up instantly.

  494. Yet here

  495. they all

  496. are.

  497. Some

  498. inflexible

  499. inhibition

  500. is holding

  501. them relentlessly

  502. together.

  503. The nature

  504. of the

  505. inhibition

  506. is also

  507. a secret,

  508. one thus

  509. far

  510. reserved

  511. by nature

  512. herself.

  513. Science

  514. hasn't

  515. answered

  516. this question

  517. of what

  518. the strong

  519. nuclear

  520. force

  521. is.

  522. Here this

  523. physicist

  524. says,

  525. it's

  526. impossible.

  527. It's

  528. impossible

  529. that the

  530. world

  531. exists

  532. that is

  533. bound

  534. together

  535. in this

  536. way.

  537. It's

  538. nature

  539. that holds

  540. the secret

  541. and we're

  542. working to

  543. figure it

  544. out.

  545. Science

  546. has yet

  547. to answer

  548. this

  549. question,

  550. but the

  551. Bible

  552. has.

  553. Paul,

  554. under the

  555. inspiration

  556. of the

  557. Spirit,

  558. tells us

  559. exactly how

  560. this happens.

  561. He tells

  562. us that

  563. the

  564. strong

  565. nuclear

  566. force

  567. is

  568. Jesus

  569. Christ

  570. and the

  571. word

  572. of his

  573. power.

  574. This is

  575. incredible.

  576. The very

  577. thing

  578. holding us

  579. all together

  580. right now

  581. and flying

  582. off into

  583. pieces

  584. all over

  585. the place

  586. is the

  587. mighty

  588. power

  589. of Jesus

  590. Christ's

  591. word.

  592. Jesus has

  593. said,

  594. be this

  595. way,

  596. orbit in

  597. this

  598. fashion,

  599. bond in

  600. these

  601. pairs,

  602. and it

  603. will not

  604. cease

  605. happening

  606. in that

  607. way

  608. until he

  609. says,

  610. stop.

  611. It's

  612. astounding.

  613. So,

  614. number one,

  615. Jesus Christ

  616. is preeminent

  617. because he

  618. is God.

  619. Number two,

  620. Jesus Christ

  621. is preeminent

  622. because he

  623. is the

  624. Lord of

  625. the universe.

  626. He made

  627. it and it

  628. exists for

  629. him and

  630. his praise.

  631. Third,

  632. Jesus Christ

  633. is preeminent

  634. because he

  635. is the

  636. head of

  637. the church.

  638. And we

  639. see this

  640. in verse

  641. 18.

  642. Paul writes,

  643. and he

  644. is the

  645. head of

  646. the body,

  647. the church.

  648. He is

  649. the beginning,

  650. the first

  651. born from

  652. the dead,

  653. that in

  654. everything he

  655. might be

  656. preeminent.

  657. So,

  658. he is the

  659. head of

  660. the body.

  661. There are

  662. many metaphors

  663. in the New

  664. Testament

  665. used to

  666. describe the

  667. church.

  668. It is

  669. called a

  670. family,

  671. a kingdom,

  672. a vineyard,

  673. a flock,

  674. a building,

  675. and a

  676. bride.

  677. But none

  678. is more

  679. helpful,

  680. an understanding

  681. of its

  682. form and

  683. function than

  684. that of a

  685. body made

  686. of many

  687. parts with

  688. Jesus Christ

  689. as the

  690. head.

  691. This metaphor

  692. helps us to

  693. see the

  694. church as

  695. a living

  696. organism,

  697. inseparably

  698. tied together

  699. with life and

  700. mission by

  701. the living

  702. Christ.

  703. This thing

  704. does not

  705. exist apart

  706. from Jesus

  707. as its

  708. head.

  709. He gives

  710. it its

  711. life and

  712. he gives

  713. it its

  714. mission.

  715. He controls

  716. every part

  717. of it.

  718. He coordinates

  719. together the

  720. diversity of

  721. gifting and

  722. ministry for

  723. the sake of

  724. his name.

  725. Jesus does

  726. not merely

  727. save the

  728. church, but

  729. he is the

  730. head of the

  731. church also,

  732. giving it

  733. life and

  734. giving it

  735. direction.

  736. He's the

  737. head of the

  738. body.

  739. He is the

  740. beginning.

  741. Jesus is the

  742. originator of

  743. the church.

  744. He is the

  745. beginning.

  746. The Greek

  747. word here has

  748. a two-fold

  749. sense of

  750. both source

  751. and primacy.

  752. In Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:4

  753. 1, verse 4,

  754. Paul states

  755. that God

  756. chose us in

  757. him before

  758. the foundation

  759. of the

  760. world.

  761. He is its

  762. source and

  763. without him

  764. it does not

  765. exist.

  766. Paul goes on

  767. to say that

  768. he is the

  769. firstborn from

  770. the dead.

  771. And here we

  772. see that same

  773. Greek word for

  774. firstborn that

  775. speaks of

  776. order,

  777. order of

  778. progression.

  779. And what he's

  780. saying here is

  781. not that,

  782. because there

  783. were certainly

  784. those who were

  785. raised before

  786. Jesus,

  787. Lazarus as an

  788. example.

  789. But what Paul

  790. is saying is of

  791. all those who

  792. have ever been

  793. raised or will

  794. ever be raised

  795. from the dead,

  796. he is of the

  797. highest rank.

  798. He is the

  799. most important,

  800. right, as the

  801. source and the

  802. head of the

  803. church.

  804. He is

  805. preeminent.

  806. So he's

  807. preeminent

  808. because he is

  809. God, because he

  810. is the Lord of

  811. the universe,

  812. because he is

  813. the head of

  814. the church.

  815. Fourth and

  816. lastly, Jesus

  817. Christ is

  818. preeminent

  819. because of

  820. his redemptive

  821. work.

  822. Verse 20,

  823. Paul says,

  824. and through

  825. him to

  826. reconcile to

  827. himself all

  828. things, whether

  829. on earth or

  830. in heaven,

  831. making peace

  832. by the blood

  833. of his cross.

  834. There are

  835. many ways in

  836. which our

  837. salvation is

  838. explained in

  839. the scripture,

  840. and they are

  841. all wonderful

  842. in their own

  843. right.

  844. We are

  845. justified.

  846. We once

  847. stood before

  848. God guilty

  849. and condemned,

  850. but in

  851. Jesus Christ

  852. we are

  853. declared

  854. righteous.

  855. Not just

  856. innocent, but

  857. we're given

  858. perfection in

  859. Christ.

  860. We are

  861. referred to

  862. as forgiven.

  863. We once

  864. stood before

  865. God as

  866. great debtors,

  867. but the debt

  868. has been paid

  869. by Jesus

  870. Christ and

  871. now forgotten.

  872. Our sins

  873. have been

  874. cast as far

  875. as the east

  876. is to the

  877. west.

  878. We are

  879. described as

  880. adopted.

  881. We once

  882. stood before

  883. God as

  884. strangers,

  885. but in

  886. Jesus Christ

  887. we are

  888. made children

  889. of the

  890. Most High.

  891. We're

  892. called

  893. His own

  894. and made

  895. part of

  896. His family

  897. with all

  898. of the

  899. rights and

  900. rewards that

  901. come with

  902. that.

  903. All those

  904. things are

  905. wonderful,

  906. beautiful

  907. pictures of

  908. our salvation,

  909. but

  910. reconciliation

  911. is one

  912. of my

  913. favorites of

  914. these

  915. explanations.

  916. Reconciliation.

  917. We once

  918. stood before

  919. God as

  920. His enemies,

  921. angrily

  922. shaking our

  923. fist at

  924. Him and

  925. His ways,

  926. wanting to

  927. rule the

  928. world for

  929. ourselves,

  930. thinking we

  931. even know

  932. how to do

  933. such a

  934. thing.

  935. But in

  936. Jesus Christ

  937. we are

  938. made God's

  939. friend.

  940. The Greek

  941. word for

  942. reconcile

  943. means to

  944. change in

  945. relationship.

  946. So we

  947. receive

  948. in salvation

  949. this idea

  950. of reconciliation,

  951. a change of

  952. status.

  953. We go from

  954. enemies to

  955. friends.

  956. It's a state

  957. of being.

  958. It's who

  959. we are.

  960. And this is

  961. not conditioned

  962. on what

  963. we do,

  964. but it's

  965. who we

  966. are because

  967. God has

  968. done it.

  969. Jesus has

  970. reconciled us

  971. to God.

  972. And so now

  973. those who

  974. have been

  975. reconciled,

  976. because we

  977. have new

  978. identities,

  979. we live

  980. different.

  981. But it's

  982. that identity

  983. that changes

  984. the way we

  985. live and

  986. not the

  987. other way

  988. around.

  989. Beloved,

  990. we are not

  991. different in

  992. degree.

  993. Every other

  994. religion in

  995. the world

  996. is teaching

  997. this.

  998. Different in

  999. degree.

  1000. A striving

  1001. for,

  1002. a hoping to

  1003. be better

  1004. than,

  1005. that we

  1006. would be

  1007. accepted.

  1008. We are

  1009. different in

  1010. type.

  1011. That's a

  1012. wonderful,

  1013. wonderful

  1014. reality.

  1015. Paul wrote

  1016. in Romans

    Romans 5:10

  1017. chapter 5

  1018. verse 10,

  1019. And Paul

  1020. says that

  1021. Jesus is

  1022. reconciling

  1023. all things,

  1024. whether on

  1025. earth or

  1026. in heaven.

  1027. In Genesis

    Genesis 1:3

  1028. chapter 1

  1029. verse 3,

  1030. we see that

  1031. after the

  1032. world was

  1033. created by

  1034. and for

  1035. Christ,

  1036. that it

  1037. was very

  1038. good.

  1039. All of

  1040. this goodness

  1041. was marred

  1042. by man's

  1043. sin.

  1044. My wife

  1045. weeded our

  1046. yard quite a

  1047. bit yesterday.

  1048. That's a

  1049. result of

  1050. the corruption

  1051. of creation.

  1052. That's part

  1053. of sinfulness.

  1054. Things don't

  1055. grow where

  1056. they're supposed

  1057. to grow

  1058. any longer.

  1059. My not

  1060. feeling well

  1061. at the end

  1062. of this

  1063. week was

  1064. part of

  1065. this

  1066. cursedness

  1067. that exists

  1068. in the

  1069. world.

  1070. But all

  1071. of that

  1072. will one

  1073. day be

  1074. restored.

  1075. The

  1076. reconciliation

  1077. of mankind,

  1078. although

  1079. primary,

  1080. most

  1081. importantly,

  1082. is just

  1083. one aspect

  1084. of Christ's

  1085. restorative

  1086. work.

  1087. And so we're

  1088. going to live

  1089. one day as

  1090. those who have

  1091. been reconciled

  1092. to God

  1093. in Christ

  1094. in a world

  1095. that will be

  1096. reconciled to

  1097. God,

  1098. that will be

  1099. set straight

  1100. all together.

  1101. what a

  1102. thing to

  1103. think about

  1104. and look

  1105. forward

  1106. to.

  1107. And Paul

  1108. tells us

  1109. that Jesus

  1110. did this

  1111. by making

  1112. peace by

  1113. the blood

  1114. of his

  1115. cross.

  1116. Jesus'

  1117. death on

  1118. the cross

  1119. was the

  1120. means by

  1121. which our

  1122. reconciliation

  1123. is made

  1124. possible.

  1125. The wrath

  1126. of God

  1127. poured out

  1128. on Christ

  1129. in that

  1130. place.

  1131. On the

  1132. cross,

  1133. Jesus Christ

  1134. became the

  1135. enemy of

  1136. God,

  1137. and God

  1138. justly

  1139. punished

  1140. him as

  1141. such so

  1142. that we

  1143. might be

  1144. reconciled

  1145. to God.

  1146. Jesus Christ

  1147. is preeminent

  1148. because he

  1149. is God,

  1150. because he

  1151. is the

  1152. Lord of

  1153. the universe,

  1154. because he

  1155. is the

  1156. head of

  1157. the church,

  1158. and because

  1159. of his

  1160. redemptive

  1161. work.

  1162. So what

  1163. does all

  1164. this have

  1165. to do

  1166. with the

  1167. existence

  1168. of Christ's

  1169. family

  1170. church?

  1171. Well,

  1172. for all

  1173. of the

  1174. aforementioned

  1175. reasons,

  1176. Jesus Christ

  1177. is of

  1178. highest

  1179. ranking

  1180. and should

  1181. be worshipped

  1182. as such,

  1183. and this

  1184. is why

  1185. the church

  1186. gathers,

  1187. and this

  1188. is why

  1189. the church

  1190. goes.

  1191. Whether

  1192. or not

  1193. you are

  1194. part of

  1195. this church

  1196. or ever

  1197. will be,

  1198. you exist

  1199. to glorify

  1200. God by

  1201. experiencing,

  1202. proclaiming,

  1203. and displaying

  1204. the supremacy

  1205. of Jesus

  1206. Christ in

  1207. all things

  1208. to all

  1209. peoples.

  1210. those who

  1211. have been

  1212. reconciled by

  1213. his death

  1214. on the

  1215. cross

  1216. rightly

  1217. should

  1218. experience,

  1219. proclaim,

  1220. and display

  1221. his supremacy

  1222. in all

  1223. things to

  1224. all peoples.

  1225. And this

  1226. is not

  1227. a burdensome

  1228. task because

  1229. Jesus Christ

  1230. is preeminent.

  1231. We can

  1232. cast all of

  1233. our anxieties

  1234. and fears,

  1235. our doubts,

  1236. our troubles,

  1237. our depressions

  1238. on him.

  1239. because he

  1240. is preeminent

  1241. there is no

  1242. situation that

  1243. escapes his

  1244. attention or

  1245. his power.

  1246. Because he

  1247. is preeminent

  1248. there is no

  1249. circumstance that

  1250. surprises him

  1251. or evades

  1252. his providential

  1253. control.

  1254. Because he

  1255. is preeminent

  1256. he is our

  1257. confidence in

  1258. life and

  1259. death.

  1260. And because he

  1261. is preeminent

  1262. he is the

  1263. reason we can

  1264. boldly share

  1265. the good news

  1266. of his

  1267. kingdom.

  1268. The reality

  1269. of who

  1270. Jesus is

  1271. demands our

  1272. affections and

  1273. our obedience.

  1274. The reality

  1275. of who Jesus

  1276. is makes

  1277. sure the

  1278. promises of

  1279. God to

  1280. us.

  1281. So,

  1282. let us be a

  1283. people who

  1284. set ourselves

  1285. to a constant

  1286. previous

  1287. contemplation of

  1288. who Jesus

  1289. is as we

  1290. await our

  1291. future

  1292. blessedness.

  1293. In closing,

  1294. let me remind

  1295. you of the

  1296. words of

  1297. John Owen.

  1298. This therefore

  1299. deserves the

  1300. severest of

  1301. our thoughts,

  1302. the best of

  1303. our meditations,

  1304. and our

  1305. utmost diligence

  1306. in them.

  1307. Let's pray

  1308. together.
