  1. Yeah, okay, well, I don't know how much story you've received or haven't received, but Nathan was here this morning.

  2. ! He was trying really hard to push through and make it. As you know, he's stubborn like I am and a lot of other people, but he finally decided to tap out and go home and then make the 730 phone call to me, phone a friend to pick up the service.

  3. And so, but I myself, some of you that know me well know I probably have some mild insomnia, so I'm not really fully awake this morning myself, but I was glad to help out.

  4. So, I went upstairs and thankfully, my wife Kathleen made some oatmeal for me and some coffee and I slammed that down. No Red Bull or pre-workout is in the equation this morning.

  5. I probably should have gone to some of that, but I thought it would make me too jittery.

  6. So, I was upstairs just like, alright Lord, here we are. What in the world are we going to talk about this morning? What will you have your people here?

  7. And for some reason, my mind was led to another time I was asked to preach short notice. I think it was like in 2010 probably or 11.

  8. And just a story that illustrates just the simple gospel, one that we are prone to forget, one that we are prone to wander from.

  9. And so, I was in doing some mission stuff, doing some ministry in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

  10. And my best friend Mark, he was in charge of this ministry team.

  11. And he said, so, you want to preach tonight? And that was like two hours away.

  12. And I told him, are you serious? I kind of like laughed at first.

  13. And then he's like, I'm not joking. I'm like, do you want to preach tonight?

  14. And we were in inner city Belfast and at a church that was just sitting right in the middle of inner city Belfast.

  15. And it was around the time of the year when there's a lot of conflict and rioting and fighting in Belfast.

  16. There's a lot of tension between Irish Catholics and, quote, you know, British, Scottish Protestants who were there.

  17. And there was a pretty big riot that year, actually.

  18. And we were right near the place where the two neighborhoods kind of meet.

  19. So, that's where all the stuff goes down.

  20. Like, you know, Irish Catholics over here and the, I'm just saying, quote, Protestant, not real, probably, in a lot of ways.

  21. But on this side of the street.

  22. And I knew that a lot of them were going to be around that week.

  23. A lot of them were going to come around and hear, like, what is this, what is going on at this gathering over here?

  24. So, that's what my friend asked me to preach at.

  25. And I told him, like, do you really want me to preach this short notice?

  26. And he was like, you Americans, you rely so much on, like, preparation.

  27. And he just started giving me a hard time about not being prepared to, like, just give a message.

  28. And as you know, he's very sarcastic in a loving way.

  29. And so, I don't know why, but I was led to 2 Samuel.

  30. So, open your Bibles there.

  31. And probably a big mouthful of Hebrew narrative is not the best thing to preach on in the morning when you're really tired.

  32. But the Lord has pictured his gospel for us in so many ways.

  33. We're blessed to have a Bible that comes to us in such an incredible form.

  34. Where there's everything from law to historical accounts to poetry.

  35. And different ways that God has sought to reveal himself to us.

  36. And in our passage, we'll be in 2 Samuel chapter 9.

    2 Samuel 9 chapter mention

  37. It's a wonderful story that depicts what God has done for us in Christ.

  38. And as I thought about it, I don't think that, at least myself, I've never spoken on this before here.

  39. And as many of you are aware, the Old Testament, what we call the Old Testament,

  40. is all in many ways foreshadowing and pointing to a greater fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

  41. So, God sovereignly was organizing and bringing about so many things to depict for us

  42. what he would do one day for us in Christ.

  43. And this is a story that really, really moves me.

  44. And I hope it does the same for you.

  45. But let's give you some context before we start getting into chapter 9.

  46. Most of you know that King Saul was Israel's first king.

  47. And he had wandered away from the Lord and he had sought very simple things out.

  48. And God had judged him and said, basically, you will no longer be king over Israel.

  49. And as time went by, Saul was killed by the Philistines,

  50. along with his three sons, his three heirs.

  51. And that included Jonathan, who was David's really close friend, if you remember that story.

  52. Jonathan was one of David's close confidants, even though his father was seeking to kill David.

  53. But Jonathan was killed as well in this battle with the Philistines.

  54. And David, even before Saul was actually killed, was anointed king by Samuel.

  55. God had told Samuel, go and find this one that I'm going to appoint to be king over Israel.

  56. And he found him right out in the field, watching the sheep, and anointed him to be the king.

  57. So David was really just waiting for God's timing and still trying to honor Saul,

  58. because he had a great love for Saul, even though Saul was trying to kill him.

  59. But after this disaster happened, and Saul was killed along with his three sons,

  60. there was a civil war that erupted in the nation.

  61. And under Saul, they had been united under one nation.

  62. But after that, he was killed, it broke off back into the old ways of more like tribal rivalries

  63. with all the different tribes kind of fighting each other.

  64. But most of the tribes were connected to the house of Saul.

  65. And they fought against David and his house, which was the house of Judah.

  66. And over time, David began winning more and more victories.

  67. And the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.

  68. And there was one connection still to Saul.

  69. His name was Ish-bosheth.

  70. And he eventually was leading the forces that were fighting against David.

  71. And at some point, somebody thought it would be a good idea to kill him and brutally kill him,

  72. hoping to gain favor with David.

  73. So he brought the head of this man to David.

  74. And David was not happy.

  75. He said, you have unjustly and cruelly murdered this man,

  76. even though he was a connection to the house of Saul.

  77. And so he executed that man.

  78. And so after all this happened, the civil war was over.

  79. Everyone began looking to David for leadership over the nation.

  80. And that around the age of 30, he was crowned king of a united Israel and Judah.

  81. So one nation again.

  82. And in history, this was sort of the golden age in a lot of ways,

  83. that they look back on the nation of Israel when David was the king.

  84. And so here's what we pick up in our text.

  85. We'll start at verse 1, chapter 9.

  86. And David said,

  87. All right.

  88. All right.

  89. So after he's crowned king, David steps back and he asks this question,

  90. Is there anyone left in Saul's family at all that I may show kindness to him,

  91. as God has shown kindness to me?

  92. And so he learns about the son of Jonathan.

  93. And why is this uncommon?

  94. This is a very, very uncommon thing.

  95. I could give you, I will spare you, probably spare myself too at this point.

  96. But there are a ton of historical accounts of when someone takes over rule of a nation,

  97. like an emperor or a king or whatever.

  98. There's tons of this in Roman history.

  99. They would make sure that there was no immediate threat to their position as ruler.

  100. So they would have anyone related to the previous ruler just killed, executed,

  101. to strengthen their own position.

  102. So stepping back, there's a pretty amazing that David didn't do this

  103. because if Saul had a direct descendant,

  104. technically that could be argued that he was supposed to be the king and not David.

  105. And then civil war could happen all over again.

  106. But in 2 Samuel chapter 4,

    2 Samuel 4 chapter mention

  107. this is actually a reference back,

  108. going back to the son of Jonathan.

  109. But 2 Samuel 4.4 says,

  110. Jonathan, the son of Saul,

  111. had a son who was crippled in his feet.

  112. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel.

  113. And his nurse took him up and fled.

  114. And as she fled in her haste,

  115. he fell and became lame.

  116. And his name was Mephibosheth.

  117. So this descendant of Saul,

  118. Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth,

  119. he had been injured and he was lame.

  120. Couldn't walk.

  121. Had to be carried around everywhere.

  122. And so David deliberately seeks out Mephibosheth,

  123. not to do him harm like as would be expected,

  124. but to do good to him.

  125. So Mephibosheth had no part in this

  126. and taking initiative to go and see David.

  127. More than likely, he was fleeing for his life,

  128. hoping David would not kill him.

  129. He was afraid.

  130. So, that was point number one, by the way.

  131. Verses one through four.

  132. Which is, if you want to write this down,

  133. there's only three this morning,

  134. but the first one is like,

  135. moved by grace.

  136. And that's seen in verses one through four.

  137. Moved by grace.

  138. David deliberately sought out this descendant of Saul

  139. to show him kindness.

  140. All right?

  141. So then we will read on.

  142. This goes into the second point,

  143. which is a humble response.

  144. A humble response.

  145. And we'll see this in verses five through eight.

  146. Then King David sent and brought him

  147. from the house of Meshire,

  148. and the son of Emiel at Lodabar.

  149. And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan,

  150. son of Saul, came to David,

  151. fell on his face, and paid homage.

  152. And David said, Mephibosheth.

  153. And he answered,

  154. Behold, I am your servant.

  155. So he's just laying down like,

  156. Please don't kill me.

  157. I'm your servant.

  158. And David said to him,

  159. Do not fear,

  160. for I will show you kindness

  161. for the sake of your father, Jonathan.

  162. And I will restore to you

  163. all the land of Saul, your father.

  164. And you shall eat at my table always.

  165. And he paid homage and said,

  166. What is your servant

  167. that you should show regard

  168. for a dead dog such as I?

  169. So we see a humble response

  170. from Mephibosheth.

  171. He came into the situation

  172. expecting like I've been caught,

  173. and now I'm going to be executed

  174. by King David.

  175. And he is mind blown.

  176. He's probably just on his face

  177. prostrated before King David

  178. saying, I'm your servant.

  179. I'm your humble servant.

  180. Please don't.

  181. Please don't kill me.

  182. And David says,

  183. Hey, listen,

  184. I haven't brought you here to do this.

  185. I'm bringing you here

  186. because I want to show you kindness

  187. for the sake of your father, Jonathan.

  188. He still couldn't believe it.

  189. He was shocked,

  190. and then he responded,

  191. Who am I?

  192. He calls himself,

  193. Why are you showing regard for me?

  194. I'm like a dead dog.

  195. I have no value at all.

  196. So you've got to ask yourself,

  197. What is David's motives

  198. for showing kindness

  199. towards Mephibosheth?

  200. He, again, has nothing to offer.

  201. He has no service he can offer to David

  202. because he's lame.

  203. He's physically unable to.

  204. He has no case to plead before him.

  205. No money to offer.

  206. So he expected death.

  207. So why did David do this?

  208. And at least from our text,

  209. we can pick up two reasons

  210. why David chose to show

  211. such kindness to this young guy.

  212. The first one, it says,

  213. Kindness for Jonathan's sake.

  214. He desires to display

  215. the love and the loyalty he had to Jonathan,

  216. who was his best friend.

  217. And a long time ago,

  218. in 1 Samuel chapter 20,

    1 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  219. Jonathan and David

  220. make a covenant together

  221. and basically say,

  222. After all this is over,

  223. will you swear before God

  224. to take care of my family

  225. and anyone that follows me?

  226. And they both promised each other that.

  227. If something happens to the other,

  228. they would see to it

  229. that they looked after their family.

  230. So he made that covenant with David

  231. before God.

  232. And this was him being faithful

  233. to that covenant.

  234. The second thing

  235. that we also see in our text,

  236. it says,

  237. That I may show the kindness

  238. of the Lord to you.

  239. David could love his enemies

  240. because he had experienced

  241. being loved as an enemy

  242. by God.

  243. He was very, very mindful

  244. that his own sin

  245. and his own rebellion

  246. against God

  247. deserved death as well.

  248. But now he wanted to display

  249. the kindness

  250. and forgiveness of God

  251. in how he treated Mephibosheth.

  252. There's only a couple of places

  253. for you to look today

  254. outside of our main text,

  255. but hold your hand there.

  256. But go to Psalm 25.

  257. Psalm 25 and verse 6.

  258. And this is a psalm of David.

  259. He's pouring his heart out

  260. to the Lord.

  261. So David wrote this.

  262. And just to kind of give you

  263. a glimpse into his heart

  264. and his relationship with God,

  265. that he was very aware

  266. that he himself

  267. had received mercy from God.

  268. So look at verse 6.

  269. He says,

  270. Remember your mercy, O Lord,

  271. and your steadfast love.

  272. For they have been

  273. from of old.

  274. Remember not

  275. the sins of my youth

  276. or my transgressions.

  277. According to your steadfast love,

  278. remember me

  279. for the sake of your goodness,

  280. O Lord.

  281. Good and upright

  282. is the Lord.

  283. Therefore,

  284. he instructs sinners

  285. in the way.

  286. He leads the humble

  287. in what is right

  288. and teaches the humble

  289. his way.

  290. All the paths of the Lord

  291. are steadfast love

  292. and faithfulness

  293. for those who keep

  294. his covenant

  295. and his testimonies.

  296. For your name's sake,

  297. O Lord,

  298. pardon my guilt

  299. for it is great.

  300. Really remember

  301. verse 11 particularly.

  302. For your name's sake,

  303. O Lord,

  304. pardon my guilt

  305. for it is great.

  306. So David is a man

  307. who is very aware

  308. of his own sin

  309. and his own rebellion

  310. against the holy God

  311. and that God has

  312. shown him mercy,

  313. shown him his goodness

  314. and his steadfast love.

  315. And so,

  316. all of us know

  317. that if you actually

  318. have been touched

  319. and saved

  320. and born again,

  321. you can't look at

  322. other people around you,

  323. including your enemies,

  324. the same way anymore.

  325. You are transformed

  326. by the grace of God.

  327. And so,

  328. this is David's motivation.

  329. He wants to keep

  330. his covenant

  331. that he made

  332. to his loyal

  333. and best friend,

  334. Jonathan,

  335. but also to display

  336. the kindness

  337. and forgiveness

  338. of the Lord.

  339. So you can go back

  340. to 2 Samuel.

  341. And this brings us

  342. to our third point.

  343. Point number three

  344. is accepted

  345. and blessed

  346. by the king.

  347. All right.

  348. So verse 9.

  349. It says,

  350. Then the king

  351. called Ziba

  352. Saul's servant

  353. and said to him,

  354. All that belong

  355. to Saul

  356. and to all his house

  357. I have given

  358. to your master's grandson.

  359. And you and your sons

  360. and your servants

  361. shall till the land

  362. for him

  363. and shall bring

  364. in the produce

  365. that your master's grandson

  366. may have bread

  367. to eat.

  368. But Mephibosheth,

  369. your master's grandson

  370. shall always eat

  371. at my table.

  372. Now Ziba

  373. had 15 sons

  374. and 20 servants.

  375. And Ziba

  376. said to the king,

  377. According to all

  378. that my lord

  379. the king

  380. commands

  381. his servant,

  382. so will your servant

  383. do.

  384. So Mephibosheth

  385. ate at David's table

  386. like one

  387. of the king's sons.

  388. And Mephibosheth

  389. had a young son

  390. whose name

  391. was Mekah.

  392. And all who lived

  393. in Ziba's house

  394. became Mephibosheth's servants.

  395. So Mephibosheth

  396. lived in Jerusalem

  397. for he ate

  398. always

  399. at the king's table.

  400. Now he was

  401. lame

  402. in both his feet.

  403. So,

  404. not only

  405. does David

  406. just spare his life,

  407. he could have said,

  408. I brought you here

  409. just so you would

  410. be aware

  411. that I could

  412. execute you,

  413. but I'm just

  414. going to get rid

  415. of you instead.

  416. Just disappear.

  417. Get out of my sight.

  418. I don't want

  419. to see you again.

  420. He could have said that

  421. and that would have

  422. actually still

  423. been merciful.

  424. That actually

  425. still would have

  426. been a crazy act

  427. to the people

  428. around him.

  429. Like,

  430. why aren't you

  431. killing this guy?

  432. But,

  433. he not only

  434. just shows him

  435. mercy,

  436. but he blesses

  437. him with land

  438. and servants

  439. that came

  440. from the house

  441. of Saul.

  442. So,

  443. you see that

  444. greed was not

  445. really in David's.

  446. He didn't really

  447. care about all

  448. of that.

  449. He gave it

  450. to Mephibosheth

  451. so that he would

  452. have somewhere

  453. to go

  454. and people

  455. to help him

  456. because of his

  457. condition.

  458. And so,

  459. not only

  460. he just stops

  461. there,

  462. it goes even

  463. further.

  464. One more step.

  465. Not just spares

  466. his life,

  467. not just gives

  468. him land

  469. and servants.

  470. But then he

  471. says,

  472. hey,

  473. I want you

  474. to know

  475. that you

  476. always have

  477. the right

  478. to come

  479. and eat

  480. here with

  481. me,

  482. the king.

  483. You're

  484. always welcome

  485. at my

  486. table.

  487. And said,

  488. join this

  489. fellowship

  490. and join

  491. friendship

  492. with me

  493. and come

  494. and eat

  495. with me.

  496. At best,

  497. right?

  498. He could have

  499. just said,

  500. get out of

  501. the knowledge,

  502. but he said,

  503. I don't want

  504. to just stop

  505. there.

  506. I want you

  507. to really

  508. see the

  509. mercy and

  510. grace of

  511. God.

  512. So I

  513. want you

  514. to come

  515. and actually

  516. dine with

  517. me as if

  518. you were

  519. one of

  520. my own

  521. sons.

  522. I mean,

  523. so mind

  524. blowing.

  525. And I

  526. love the

  527. emphasis in

  528. our text.

  529. It kind

  530. of reminds

  531. you at

  532. the end

  533. of verse

  534. 13.

  535. Now he

  536. was lame

  537. on both

  538. feet.

  539. Just,

  540. you know,

  541. most of you

  542. who are,

  543. he's repeating

  544. himself by

  545. saying just

  546. the emphasis

  547. is that this

  548. man had

  549. nothing to

  550. offer the

  551. king at

  552. all.

  553. And the

  554. king accepted

  555. him, forgave

  556. him, and

  557. blessed him,

  558. and made him

  559. a part of

  560. his own

  561. family.

  562. So what

  563. is some

  564. application then

  565. for us,

  566. if we haven't

  567. gotten some

  568. of that

  569. already?

  570. A few

  571. things.

  572. One is,

  573. just as the

  574. house of

  575. David and

  576. the house

  577. of Saul

  578. were at

  579. war with

  580. each other,

  581. we also,

  582. apart from

  583. Christ,

  584. are at

  585. war with

  586. God.

  587. All of

  588. us have

  589. shown great

  590. rebellion and

  591. great hostility

  592. to God

  593. himself.

  594. Unimaginable

  595. hostility between

  596. God and

  597. man.

  598. All of us

  599. have done

  600. this,

  601. all of us.

  602. In Romans

  603. 6, 23,

  604. a well-known

  605. verse, it

  606. says,

  607. for the wages

  608. of sin is

  609. death.

  610. God is

  611. of such

  612. great value,

  613. such unimaginable

  614. beauty and

  615. greatness and

  616. perfection,

  617. that for us

  618. just to look

  619. at him and

  620. say, you

  621. are no longer

  622. God, but I'm

  623. going to rule

  624. my own life

  625. and do what

  626. I want to

  627. do, isn't

  628. just a trivial

  629. thing, it's

  630. treason of

  631. the worst

  632. kind.

  633. And so,

  634. all of us

  635. have exchanged

  636. the truth

  637. about God

  638. for a lie,

  639. and we

  640. worship the

  641. things in

  642. this world

  643. rather than

  644. the creator

  645. himself.

  646. All of us

  647. are at war

  648. with God,

  649. and by

  650. right, if

  651. he desires

  652. so, God

  653. could destroy

  654. us without

  655. showing us

  656. any mercy.

  657. But another

  658. connection to

  659. our story is

  660. the pursuit

  661. of God.

  662. As David

  663. pursued

  664. Mephibosheth,

  665. he had

  666. nothing to

  667. do with

  668. that.

  669. He didn't

  670. initiate

  671. anything with

  672. David at

  673. all.

  674. He was on

  675. the run.

  676. He was

  677. hiding,

  678. hoping he

  679. wouldn't be

  680. caught by

  681. David like

  682. a fugitive.

  683. But David

  684. intentionally,

  685. deliberately

  686. sought this

  687. man out and

  688. pursued him.

  689. And the

  690. connection is

  691. that God

  692. has intentionally,

  693. not by

  694. accident,

  695. not because

  696. he came up

  697. with a new

  698. plan,

  699. but God

  700. has

  701. intentionally

  702. pursued us

  703. by sending

  704. Christ.

  705. He has

  706. sought us

  707. out.

  708. Have you

  709. ever taken

  710. note of that

  711. in your own

  712. life?

  713. Have you ever

  714. stood back

  715. and been like,

  716. if I really

  717. am careful and

  718. I look at my

  719. life, I can

  720. see the pursuit

  721. of God on

  722. my life.

  723. People that he

  724. put in my

  725. life, the

  726. place where I

  727. grew up, the

  728. fact that there

  729. are so many

  730. gospel things

  731. that are out

  732. there for us

  733. to hear, some

  734. bad stuff too,

  735. but so many

  736. Bibles that

  737. are around,

  738. God seeks

  739. us out.

  740. He's not just

  741. sitting back very

  742. passively on his

  743. throne saying,

  744. I hope they

  745. figure it out

  746. and I hope they

  747. know I'm here.

  748. If you read

  749. the scripture,

  750. God hunts

  751. people down.

  752. He finds

  753. them and he

  754. knocks them

  755. off their

  756. horses and he

  757. says, you're

  758. mine.

  759. I'm choosing

  760. to show you

  761. mercy.

  762. And if you

  763. really are

  764. careful to go

  765. back over your

  766. life, you'll

  767. see God at

  768. work.

  769. You'll see his

  770. handprints

  771. everywhere.

  772. And he

  773. didn't have to

  774. do that.

  775. He's not

  776. required to.

  777. Like, like

  778. Mephibosheth,

  779. we have no

  780. case to

  781. plead with

  782. God.

  783. We have no

  784. righteousness or

  785. goodness of

  786. ourselves to

  787. offer to God

  788. at all.

  789. He does not

  790. need us.

  791. We are all

  792. guilty without

  793. exception.

  794. The psalm that

  795. David read

  796. earlier, Psalm

  797. 14, is

  798. quoted in

  799. Romans 3

  800. where Paul

  801. says, all

  802. are guilty.

  803. None are

  804. righteous.

  805. No, not

  806. one.

  807. No one

  808. understands and

  809. no one

  810. seeks God.

  811. Our lost

  812. condition is

  813. so beyond

  814. our imagination.

  815. If you

  816. really step

  817. back and

  818. look at what

  819. God's word

  820. says about

  821. us, then

  822. look at your

  823. own life.

  824. You'll see

  825. these things.

  826. That we

  827. were slaves.

  828. Jesus says

  829. those who

  830. commit sin

  831. are slaves

  832. to sin.

  833. He also

  834. says, this

  835. one really

  836. bothers people

  837. and it

  838. scares me.

  839. He says, if

  840. you're not

  841. in me, you

  842. don't belong

  843. to me.

  844. You don't

  845. belong to

  846. my father,

  847. but your

  848. father is

  849. your, you

  850. belong to

  851. the devil.

  852. He said, you

  853. are of your

  854. father, the

  855. devil, and

  856. you want to

  857. do the will

  858. of your

  859. father.

  860. All of us

  861. have hearts

  862. and minds

  863. that are

  864. corrupted by

  865. sin and

  866. evil.

  867. We're not

  868. just, you

  869. know, morally

  870. off and need a

  871. little bit of

  872. help, need a

  873. little bit of

  874. guidance from a

  875. therapist.

  876. We're not

  877. just sick in

  878. bed, we

  879. don't need a

  880. doctor.

  881. We need a

  882. complete miracle

  883. worker who

  884. can bring us

  885. back from

  886. spiritual death

  887. to life.

  888. And that's

  889. the depiction.

  890. That's why we

  891. need to be born

  892. again is because

  893. we are dead

  894. in our

  895. trespasses

  896. and sin.

  897. So we have

  898. nothing.

  899. We have nothing

  900. to go before

  901. God just the

  902. way that

  903. Mephibosheth

  904. had no case

  905. to plead.

  906. And as we

  907. look,

  908. we saw

  909. David's

  910. motives for

  911. why he

  912. chose to

  913. show mercy

  914. to Mephibosheth.

  915. But what

  916. are God's

  917. motives?

  918. Why does

  919. God do

  920. this?

  921. He's not

  922. under any

  923. obligation to.

  924. Well, the

  925. second place I

  926. want you to

  927. look is

  928. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  929. chapter 1.

  930. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  931. chapter 1.

  932. This is,

  933. there are

  934. many more,

  935. but the two

  936. main motives

  937. I'm just going

  938. to connect

  939. to our

  940. story is

  941. that God

  942. chose to

  943. show us

  944. mercy and

  945. grace for

  946. the sake of

  947. his own

  948. glory to

  949. display how

  950. great he

  951. is and how

  952. forgiving he

  953. is.

  954. Look at

  955. Ephesians 1

    Ephesians 1:6

  956. verse 6.

  957. It's talking

  958. about our

  959. salvation in

  960. Christ.

  961. It says,

  962. to the praise

  963. of his

  964. glorious grace

  965. with which

  966. he has

  967. blessed us

  968. in the

  969. beloved.

  970. In him

  971. we have

  972. redemption

  973. through his

  974. blood and

  975. the forgiveness

  976. of our

  977. trespasses

  978. according to

  979. the riches

  980. of his

  981. grace which

  982. he lavished

  983. upon us in

  984. all wisdom

  985. and insight.

  986. So,

  987. God sent

  988. his son,

  989. Jesus Christ,

  990. to come here

  991. and bear the

  992. punishment of

  993. our sin,

  994. to die in

  995. our stead.

  996. Unlike

  997. David,

  998. God can't

  999. just pardon

  1000. a crime

  1001. and then not

  1002. punish it.

  1003. He has to

  1004. punish it.

  1005. He must

  1006. punish it.

  1007. All of us

  1008. are outraged

  1009. when we hear

  1010. about a

  1011. case in

  1012. our country

  1013. where clearly

  1014. someone committed

  1015. a crime,

  1016. a really

  1017. heinous crime,

  1018. and then

  1019. they're

  1020. pardoned.

  1021. And I

  1022. think none

  1023. of us would

  1024. be in that

  1025. position if

  1026. we heard

  1027. a judge

  1028. who really

  1029. committed a

  1030. really bad

  1031. crime.

  1032. A judge

  1033. just say

  1034. to someone,

  1035. you promise

  1036. not to do

  1037. it again?

  1038. I know you

  1039. had a really

  1040. rough upbringing.

  1041. You promise?

  1042. Okay,

  1043. go free then.

  1044. Just don't

  1045. do it again.

  1046. God cannot

  1047. do that

  1048. and will

  1049. not do

  1050. that.

  1051. He has

  1052. to punish

  1053. sin.

  1054. And so

  1055. either you're

  1056. going to

  1057. bear your

  1058. own punishment

  1059. or Christ

  1060. is going to

  1061. bear it for

  1062. you.

  1063. God.

  1064. And that's

  1065. what we

  1066. read here

  1067. is that

  1068. in Christ

  1069. God did

  1070. this to

  1071. the praise

  1072. of his

  1073. own glory

  1074. so that we

  1075. would look

  1076. at him

  1077. and be

  1078. like this

  1079. is an

  1080. amazing,

  1081. forgiving,

  1082. glorious

  1083. God.

  1084. So that's

  1085. one motive

  1086. to the

  1087. praise of

  1088. his glory.

  1089. The second

  1090. motive is

  1091. God's love

  1092. and his

  1093. mercy towards

  1094. us.

  1095. Just jump

  1096. ahead one

  1097. chapter in

  1098. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1099. chapter 2.

  1100. In verse

  1101. 4 it

  1102. says,

  1103. But God,

  1104. being rich

  1105. in mercy

  1106. because of

  1107. the great

  1108. love with

  1109. which he

  1110. loved us,

  1111. even when

  1112. we were

  1113. dead and

  1114. our trespasses,

  1115. made us

  1116. alive together

  1117. with Christ.

  1118. By grace

  1119. you have

  1120. been saved.

  1121. So we

  1122. see that

  1123. God didn't

  1124. just,

  1125. he's not

  1126. just really

  1127. tight with

  1128. his mercy,

  1129. he loves

  1130. to show

  1131. mercy to

  1132. those who

  1133. were coming

  1134. to him

  1135. for forgiveness.

  1136. And it

  1137. says there

  1138. that we

  1139. were dead

  1140. but we

  1141. were made

  1142. alive with

  1143. Christ.

  1144. And,

  1145. you know,

  1146. of course in

  1147. the Bible

  1148. belt,

  1149. you hear

  1150. from everybody

  1151. they are

  1152. saved.

  1153. But if you

  1154. ask many of

  1155. them,

  1156. what are you

  1157. saved from,

  1158. they don't

  1159. really know

  1160. how to say,

  1161. they don't

  1162. really know.

  1163. But we

  1164. are saved

  1165. from the

  1166. holy,

  1167. just

  1168. wrath of

  1169. God.

  1170. The judgment

  1171. of God.

  1172. You were

  1173. delivered from

  1174. that in

  1175. Christ.

  1176. And so

  1177. God's mercy

  1178. is so

  1179. great.

  1180. Got a

  1181. couple

  1182. quotes.

  1183. Our man

  1184. Spurgeon,

  1185. he said,

  1186. God's mercy

  1187. is so

  1188. great that

  1189. you may

  1190. sooner drain

  1191. the sea

  1192. of water

  1193. or deprive

  1194. the sun

  1195. of its

  1196. light or

  1197. make space

  1198. narrow.

  1199. than to

  1200. diminish

  1201. the great

  1202. mercy of

  1203. God.

  1204. The

  1205. Lord's

  1206. mercy

  1207. is a

  1208. sea

  1209. which

  1210. cannot

  1211. be

  1212. filled

  1213. though

  1214. mountains

  1215. of sin

  1216. be cast

  1217. into its

  1218. midst.

  1219. It is

  1220. like Noah's

  1221. flood which

  1222. covers all

  1223. and drowns

  1224. even the

  1225. mountaintops

  1226. of heaven

  1227. defying

  1228. sins.

  1229. God's

  1230. mercy

  1231. is so

  1232. beyond us

  1233. as

  1234. fallen

  1235. creatures.

  1236. We have

  1237. no

  1238. comprehension

  1239. in and

  1240. of

  1241. ourselves

  1242. of

  1243. grace

  1244. of

  1245. mercy.

  1246. It is

  1247. not

  1248. within us

  1249. to think

  1250. that way

  1251. at all.

  1252. We want

  1253. justice

  1254. when we

  1255. see wrong

  1256. being done

  1257. except when

  1258. we are

  1259. the one

  1260. who has

  1261. committed

  1262. the crime.

  1263. Then we

  1264. want

  1265. mercy.

  1266. It is

  1267. always

  1268. twisted

  1269. but God's

  1270. mercy

  1271. is so

  1272. pure,

  1273. rich,

  1274. and

  1275. great.

  1276. So

  1277. how are

  1278. we to be

  1279. made right

  1280. with God

  1281. then?

  1282. This is

  1283. just going

  1284. back over

  1285. our story

  1286. a little

  1287. bit.

  1288. And if

  1289. you remember

  1290. what I

  1291. read to

  1292. you earlier

  1293. out of

  1294. the Psalms

  1295. about how

  1296. David was

  1297. aware of

  1298. the forgiveness

  1299. that he

  1300. had in

  1301. Psalm 25,

  1302. for your

  1303. name's sake,

  1304. O Lord,

  1305. pardon my

  1306. sin and

  1307. my guilt

  1308. for it is

  1309. great.

  1310. So just

  1311. kind of

  1312. unpacking

  1313. that a

  1314. little bit,

  1315. we can

  1316. receive the

  1317. mercy of

  1318. God only

  1319. through

  1320. Jesus

  1321. Christ,

  1322. and we

  1323. must have

  1324. it that

  1325. way.

  1326. So if

  1327. you're

  1328. here this

  1329. morning without

  1330. Christ,

  1331. hear these

  1332. words,

  1333. and if

  1334. you are,

  1335. just rejoice,

  1336. be happy,

  1337. be glad that

  1338. God has made

  1339. you aware of

  1340. these things.

  1341. These points

  1342. actually came

  1343. from Jonathan

  1344. Edwards.

  1345. He said

  1346. about being

  1347. right with

  1348. God,

  1349. you must

  1350. see the

  1351. misery and

  1352. feel the

  1353. weight of

  1354. your sin.

  1355. Do you

  1356. have broken

  1357. God's

  1358. law and

  1359. his wrath

  1360. abides on

  1361. us?

  1362. Are you

  1363. conscious?

  1364. Are you

  1365. aware of

  1366. the sin

  1367. in your

  1368. life?

  1369. Those of

  1370. us who

  1371. have come

  1372. to know

  1373. Christ,

  1374. we're very

  1375. aware.

  1376. So beyond

  1377. perfection,

  1378. so beyond

  1379. just,

  1380. you know,

  1381. it's a saying

  1382. in our

  1383. culture,

  1384. whenever

  1385. someone wants

  1386. to kind of

  1387. get out of

  1388. trouble,

  1389. like they've

  1390. done something

  1391. wrong,

  1392. this is kind

  1393. of their

  1394. phrase they

  1395. always throw

  1396. out there,

  1397. I mean,

  1398. nobody's

  1399. perfect,

  1400. they have

  1401. no idea

  1402. the seriousness

  1403. of what

  1404. they're saying,

  1405. no one

  1406. is,

  1407. and we

  1408. are all

  1409. guilty

  1410. before God,

  1411. so if you

  1412. are aware

  1413. of that,

  1414. that's the

  1415. first thing

  1416. we have to

  1417. recognize.

  1418. It's where

  1419. David says,

  1420. pardon my

  1421. sin,

  1422. because it

  1423. is great,

  1424. he's very

  1425. aware.

  1426. The second

  1427. thing is

  1428. that we

  1429. have to be

  1430. sensible that

  1431. we are not

  1432. worthy that

  1433. God should

  1434. save us.

  1435. He says

  1436. that we

  1437. come as

  1438. beggars and

  1439. rags and

  1440. not as

  1441. creditors.

  1442. And connecting

  1443. that to our

  1444. story,

  1445. we're in the

  1446. same position

  1447. that Mephibosheth

  1448. was in.

  1449. We live in

  1450. such an

  1451. entitled

  1452. culture now

  1453. where we

  1454. think that we

  1455. deserve good

  1456. things,

  1457. like we

  1458. expect it

  1459. even.

  1460. And if

  1461. someone doesn't

  1462. show us

  1463. that,

  1464. we are very

  1465. angry about

  1466. it.

  1467. God's

  1468. But that

  1469. is not so

  1470. with God.

  1471. I had a

  1472. friend in

  1473. college when

  1474. I was up

  1475. here in

  1476. North Georgia,

  1477. and he

  1478. was a

  1479. Gulf War

  1480. vet.

  1481. He was an

  1482. old ranger

  1483. guy.

  1484. He was a

  1485. demolition

  1486. guy.

  1487. He always

  1488. said,

  1489. I always

  1490. got blue

  1491. stuff up.

  1492. He didn't

  1493. say stuff

  1494. though,

  1495. he said

  1496. other

  1497. things.

  1498. And I

  1499. always tried

  1500. to share

  1501. the gospel

  1502. with him

  1503. constantly.

  1504. I had

  1505. like five

  1506. classes with

  1507. this guy,

  1508. and he

  1509. always just

  1510. told me,

  1511. hey man,

  1512. me and God

  1513. were cool.

  1514. We've

  1515. worked

  1516. something

  1517. out.

  1518. Like we

  1519. have an

  1520. understanding.

  1521. And I

  1522. just kept

  1523. saying,

  1524. no you

  1525. don't.

  1526. You

  1527. don't have

  1528. an

  1529. understanding.

  1530. It's

  1531. come to

  1532. God,

  1533. God's

  1534. way,

  1535. or not

  1536. at all.

  1537. You

  1538. can't

  1539. work out

  1540. an

  1541. agreement.

  1542. And we

  1543. don't

  1544. deserve

  1545. this

  1546. mercy.

  1547. There's

  1548. a story

  1549. of Napoleon

  1550. Bonaparte,

  1551. who had

  1552. someone

  1553. commit a

  1554. serious

  1555. crime

  1556. against

  1557. him,

  1558. and

  1559. against

  1560. just the

  1561. nation

  1562. of

  1563. France.

  1564. And this

  1565. man was

  1566. under the

  1567. sentence of

  1568. death,

  1569. and this

  1570. man's

  1571. mother came

  1572. to plead

  1573. with Napoleon

  1574. to just

  1575. forgive her

  1576. son.

  1577. And she

  1578. said,

  1579. you know,

  1580. your

  1581. highness,

  1582. please show

  1583. mercy to

  1584. my son.

  1585. And Napoleon

  1586. said,

  1587. I can't do

  1588. that.

  1589. And she

  1590. said it

  1591. again,

  1592. please,

  1593. my emperor,

  1594. please show

  1595. mercy to my

  1596. son.

  1597. And Napoleon

  1598. said,

  1599. your son

  1600. does not

  1601. deserve

  1602. mercy.

  1603. And her

  1604. response

  1605. was,

  1606. my emperor,

  1607. if he

  1608. deserved

  1609. mercy,

  1610. I wouldn't

  1611. be asking

  1612. for this.

  1613. I know

  1614. he doesn't

  1615. deserve.

  1616. If he

  1617. was entitled,

  1618. if he

  1619. deserved it,

  1620. then I

  1621. would not

  1622. be having

  1623. this

  1624. conversation

  1625. with you.

  1626. And then

  1627. Napoleon

  1628. agreed,

  1629. okay,

  1630. you're

  1631. right.

  1632. Mercy

  1633. is only

  1634. given to

  1635. those who

  1636. don't

  1637. deserve

  1638. it.

  1639. So he

  1640. was

  1641. correcting

  1642. himself.

  1643. And so

  1644. he

  1645. pardoned

  1646. her

  1647. son.

  1648. We

  1649. must

  1650. come to

  1651. God

  1652. for

  1653. mercy

  1654. in and

  1655. through

  1656. Jesus

  1657. Christ

  1658. alone.

  1659. There

  1660. is no

  1661. other

  1662. way.

  1663. We

  1664. remain

  1665. enemies

  1666. of God

  1667. until we

  1668. come to

  1669. God

  1670. on his

  1671. terms

  1672. and not

  1673. our

  1674. own.

  1675. And

  1676. the

  1677. beauty

  1678. of this

  1679. guys

  1680. is that

  1681. God

  1682. is not

  1683. up there

  1684. just

  1685. being

  1686. stingy

  1687. and

  1688. angry.

  1689. He

  1690. wants

  1691. to show

  1692. grace

  1693. to

  1694. sinners.

  1695. It's a

  1696. part

  1697. of who

  1698. he

  1699. is.

  1700. in

  1701. Isaiah

    Isaiah 30 chapter mention

  1702. chapter

  1703. 30

  1704. it

  1705. says

  1706. therefore

  1707. the

  1708. Lord

  1709. waits

  1710. to

  1711. be

  1712. gracious

  1713. to

  1714. you.

  1715. Therefore

  1716. he

  1717. exalts

  1718. himself

  1719. to

  1720. show

  1721. mercy

  1722. to

  1723. you.

  1724. For

  1725. the

  1726. Lord

  1727. is a

  1728. God

  1729. of

  1730. justice

  1731. but

  1732. blessed

  1733. are

  1734. all

  1735. those

  1736. who

  1737. wait

  1738. for

  1739. him.

  1740. And

  1741. all

  1742. of

  1743. us

  1744. I

  1745. am

  1746. I've

  1747. had

  1748. a

  1749. chance

  1750. lately

  1751. just

  1752. the

  1753. Lord

  1754. has

  1755. just

  1756. reminded

  1757. me

  1758. of

  1759. so

  1760. much

  1761. of

  1762. the

  1763. sin

  1764. that

  1765. he

  1766. has

  1767. saved

  1768. me

  1769. from

  1770. and

  1771. the

  1772. sin

  1773. that's

  1774. still

  1775. in

  1776. my

  1777. life

  1778. and

  1779. in

  1780. my

  1781. heart

  1782. I

  1783. have

  1784. to

  1785. have

  1786. mercy

  1787. I

  1788. have

  1789. to

  1790. have

  1791. grace

  1792. there's

  1793. no

  1794. other

  1795. way

  1796. and

  1797. that's

  1798. the

  1799. beauty

  1800. of

  1801. the

  1802. gospel

  1803. that

  1804. Jesus

  1805. came

  1806. to

  1807. die

  1808. poor

  1809. sinners

  1810. we

  1811. are

  1812. undeserving

  1813. we are

  1814. just

  1815. like

  1816. dead

  1817. dogs

  1818. we

  1819. are

  1820. like

  1821. lame

  1822. in

  1823. both

  1824. feet

  1825. we

  1826. have

  1827. nothing

  1828. to

  1829. bring

  1830. to

  1831. the

  1832. king

  1833. we're

  1834. at

  1835. his

  1836. disposal

  1837. but

  1838. he

  1839. is

  1840. ready

  1841. to

  1842. pity

  1843. us

  1844. and

  1845. show

  1846. us

  1847. mercy

  1848. and

  1849. to

  1850. lift

  1851. us

  1852. up

  1853. and

  1854. not

  1855. only

  1856. God

  1857. could

  1858. have

  1859. done

  1860. the

  1861. same

  1862. thing

  1863. that

  1864. a lot

  1865. of

  1866. people

  1867. have

  1868. done

  1869. he

  1870. could

  1871. have

  1872. said

  1873. I'm

  1874. going

  1875. to

  1876. not

  1877. destroy

  1878. you

  1879. I'm

  1880. not

  1881. going

  1882. to

  1883. judge

  1884. you

  1885. just

  1886. go

  1887. and

  1888. be

  1889. free

  1890. but

  1891. he

  1892. didn't

  1893. do

  1894. that

  1895. he

  1896. saved

  1897. us

  1898. gave

  1899. us

  1900. the

  1901. perfect

  1902. righteousness

  1903. of

  1904. Christ

  1905. and

  1906. brought

  1907. us

  1908. into

  1909. his

  1910. family

  1911. in

  1912. the

  1913. same

  1914. way

  1915. that

  1916. Mephibosheth

  1917. was brought

  1918. into the

  1919. family of

  1920. David

  1921. and

  1922. we

  1923. are

  1924. welcome

  1925. at

  1926. his

  1927. table

  1928. because

  1929. of

  1930. Christ

  1931. and

  1932. accepted

  1933. in

  1934. the

  1935. beloved

  1936. so

  1937. I

  1938. pray

  1939. that

  1940. you

  1941. actually

  1942. ponder

  1943. the

  1944. great

  1945. mercy

  1946. of

  1947. God

  1948. don't

  1949. forget

  1950. it

  1951. always

  1952. keep

  1953. it

  1954. very

  1955. near

  1956. that

  1957. you

  1958. are

  1959. not

  1960. worthy

  1961. of

  1962. anything

  1963. good

  1964. that

  1965. you

  1966. have

  1967. especially

  1968. redemption

  1969. in

  1970. Christ

  1971. and

  1972. may that

  1973. lead you

  1974. to

  1975. rejoice

  1976. in

  1977. God's

  1978. salvation

  1979. and

  1980. may that

  1981. lead you

  1982. to

  1983. obedience

  1984. in

  1985. Christ

  1986. what a

  1987. savior

  1988. we have

  1989. he's

  1990. so good

  1991. to us

  1992. so with

  1993. this

  1994. let's

  1995. close

  1996. in

  1997. prayer
