  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and join me in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  2. Unless the Lord decides to take me home now, we're actually going to preach the beginning of Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  3. ! This is a good day.

  4. In today's text, Matthew records Jesus dismantling the hypocrisy of His day.

  5. Hypocrisy is the act of claiming some moral standard or beliefs and then living in contradiction to your claims.

  6. Hypocrisy was not new in Jesus' day.

  7. It has existed since the fall of man.

  8. In Genesis chapter 4, we can observe the very first hypocrite, Cain, who offered insincere worship to God.

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  9. And when his hypocrisy was exposed, his true character was revealed in the murder of his brother.

  10. In 2 Samuel chapter 15, Absalom hypocritically vowed allegiance to his father, King David, while all along plotting to overthrow him.

    2 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  11. The prophets spoke against the hypocrisy of the nation of Israel.

  12. In Isaiah chapter 1, God is grieved over Israel because their religious devotion is not consistent with their actions.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  13. And in Amos chapter 5, verse 21 through 24, God deals strongly with the hypocrisy of Israel.

    Amos 5:21–24

  14. Listen to what he says.

  15. Take away from me the noise of your songs.

  16. To the melody of your harps I will not listen.

  17. But let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

  18. You see the disconnect in the people of Israel's worship in that day and their obedience to God.

  19. There was such similar hypocrisy in Jesus' day.

  20. Listen to the very scathing words that Jesus speaks to the scribes and the Pharisees in Matthew chapter 23, verse 27 and 28.

    Matthew 23:27

  21. Jesus says,

  22. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

  23. For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanliness.

  24. So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  25. In fact, much of the Sermon on the Mount, where our text for today is found,

  26. is concerned with correcting the gross misunderstanding of the law and subsequent hypocrisy in which Jesus lived.

  27. Recall that one of the major themes of Jesus' sermon is whole person righteousness.

  28. He says astounding things in this sermon in chapter 5 we've looked at so far, like in verse 20.

  29. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees,

  30. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  31. And the people in his day would have been absolutely astonished by this.

  32. If the scribes and Pharisees aren't keeping the law well enough, then who possibly can?

  33. And in verse 48 of chapter 5, Jesus said,

  34. You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  35. You must be holy as God is holy.

  36. And you have to try to imagine Jesus' listeners going,

  37. What?

  38. How is this possible?

  39. How can we be found more righteous than the scribes and Pharisees?

  40. How can we be found perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect?

  41. And so we, with a bigger understanding of the good news of Jesus Christ,

  42. know that we are not and cannot be perfect under our own volition.

  43. But that we can have a righteousness that comes from outside of us.

  44. The perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ.

  45. If we are found in Christ, we pursue perfection,

  46. being found by God to be perfect.

  47. We are declared righteous in Christ.

  48. We are positionally moved from unrighteous to righteous,

  49. from sinner to saint.

  50. And because of that new identity,

  51. we now pursue this perfection by the power that God provides.

  52. The now and not yet of the Christian life

  53. is a matter for very careful consideration.

  54. Because hypocrisy was not left behind

  55. with the false practitioners of Jesus' day.

  56. There were hypocrites in the early church.

  57. There were hypocrites in the medieval church.

  58. There were hypocrites in the Reformation church.

  59. And there are hypocrites in today's church.

  60. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 4, verse 1 and 2,

    1 Timothy 4:1

  61. that there will be hypocrisy to the end of the age.

  62. Hypocrisy can be practiced by those who are not in the faith,

  63. but act as though they are,

  64. believing that, showing up, doing certain things,

  65. saying certain things, posting certain things,

  66. that they will be found right with God.

  67. Hypocrisy can also be practiced

  68. by those who are in the faith,

  69. but act as though they are not.

  70. So all of us, every one of us,

  71. needs to be warned today

  72. as we take a look at what Jesus has to say

  73. about the hypocrisy of His day and ours.

  74. So our text for this morning is Matthew 6, verses 1-18.

    Matthew 6:1–18

  75. Before I read it, beloved,

  76. let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  77. It was written for His glory and our good,

  78. so we would all do well to listen to it

  79. in order to believe its promises

  80. and obey its commands.

  81. Begin reading in verse 1.

  82. Jesus says,

  83. Beware of practicing your righteousness

  84. before other people

  85. in order to be seen by them.

  86. For then you will have no reward

  87. from your Father who is in heaven.

  88. Thus, when you give to the needy,

  89. sound no trumpet before you

  90. as the hypocrites do in the synagogues

  91. and in the streets,

  92. that they may be praised by others.

  93. Truly I say to you,

  94. they have received their reward.

  95. But when you give to the needy,

  96. do not let your left hand know

  97. what your right hand is doing,

  98. so that your giving may be in secret.

  99. And your Father who sees in secret

  100. will reward you.

  101. And when you pray,

  102. you must not be like the hypocrites.

  103. Do they love to stand and pray in the synagogues

  104. and at the street corners

  105. that they may be seen by others?

  106. Truly I say to you,

  107. they have received their reward.

  108. But when you pray,

  109. go into your room and shut the door

  110. and pray to your Father who is in secret.

  111. And your Father who sees in secret

  112. will reward you.

  113. And when you pray,

  114. do not heap up empty phrases

  115. as the Gentiles do,

  116. for they think that they will be heard

  117. for their many words.

  118. Do not be like them,

  119. for your Father knows what you need

  120. before you ask Him.

  121. Pray then like this,

  122. Our Father in heaven,

  123. hallowed be Your name.

  124. Your kingdom come,

  125. Your will be done on earth

  126. as it is in heaven.

  127. Give us this day our daily bread

  128. and forgive us our debts

  129. as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  130. And lead us not into temptation,

  131. but deliver us from evil.

  132. For if you forgive others their trespasses,

  133. your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  134. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses,

  135. neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  136. And when you fast,

  137. do not look gloomy like the hypocrites,

  138. for they disfigure their faces,

  139. that their fasting may be seen by others.

  140. Truly I say to you,

  141. they have received their reward.

  142. But when you fast,

  143. anoint your head and wash your face,

  144. that your fasting may not be seen by others,

  145. but by your Father who is in secret.

  146. And your Father who sees in secret

  147. will reward you.

  148. Now, we don't normally deal with

  149. this much text at one time.

  150. There's a lot here.

  151. And there is much to be unpacked

  152. in some coming weeks.

  153. But I want you to see this morning

  154. that the primary exhortation

  155. of this entire text

  156. is found in verse 1.

  157. The driving thing,

  158. the ultimate thing

  159. that Jesus is trying to communicate here

  160. is this idea

  161. of not practicing your righteousness

  162. to be seen by people,

  163. to be praised by people,

  164. because if you do,

  165. then you will have

  166. no reward in heaven.

  167. And he calls this activity

  168. hypocrisy.

  169. Jesus issues a caution

  170. that if the point of our good works

  171. is to be praised by men,

  172. if we are motivated

  173. by what others think of us

  174. rather than what God thinks of us,

  175. then we do not receive

  176. heavenly reward

  177. for our good works.

  178. There is such danger here

  179. as hypocrisy can be so deceptive.

  180. Augustine once wrote,

  181. the love of honor

  182. is the deadly bane

  183. of true piety or holiness.

  184. The vices bring forth evil works,

  185. but this,

  186. this love of honor,

  187. brings forth good works

  188. in an evil way.

  189. So we can be doing

  190. all the right things,

  191. even in our own estimation,

  192. doing them rightly.

  193. People can be praising us

  194. for all of our outward appearance

  195. of holiness,

  196. but we can be altogether

  197. unpleasing to God

  198. in the way we do the things

  199. that we do.

  200. Do you notice that in verse 1

  201. that Jesus is tying obedience

  202. toward God with reward?

  203. He's placing the two things together

  204. side by side.

  205. He's partnering them up.

  206. I am so grateful

  207. to serve a God

  208. that is ever seeking His own glory

  209. and is ever working for my good.

  210. Duty and delight

  211. are not mutually exclusive,

  212. but are intrinsic

  213. for a life well lived.

  214. We as people

  215. just seem so apt

  216. to want to cast off

  217. all authority,

  218. any instruction whatsoever.

  219. We want to be autonomous

  220. in all ways.

  221. And this is never good

  222. for people.

  223. It's good for us to live

  224. under the loving instruction

  225. of our God.

  226. These two things

  227. come together,

  228. duty and delight.

  229. You want to be filled with joy?

  230. Set yourself to obedience

  231. to God.

  232. The 17 verses that follow,

  233. verse 1,

  234. are illustrations

  235. of what Jesus is trying

  236. to teach His listeners.

  237. And with the exception

  238. of verses 9-15,

  239. which we know

  240. is the teaching

  241. on the Lord's Prayer,

  242. and we're going to deal

  243. with that at length

  244. in some coming weeks,

  245. these illustrations

  246. follow a carefully

  247. crafted pattern

  248. as follows.

  249. And I want you to see this,

  250. and I know that I'm saying it

  251. and I'm looking at it.

  252. It's much easier to look at it

  253. than to hear it.

  254. So I'm going to repeat it

  255. a number of times.

  256. But it follows

  257. a six-point pattern.

  258. Okay?

  259. So just listen.

  260. Don't try to write

  261. all this down.

  262. In each of the three illustrations,

  263. Jesus brilliantly

  264. uses the same pattern.

  265. First, the observance.

  266. Second, the prohibition.

  267. Third, the intent.

  268. Fourth, the reward.

  269. Fifth, the better observant.

  270. And sixth, the better reward.

  271. And each of them neatly walk through

  272. this pattern of presentation.

  273. We'll see very particularly momentarily

  274. how this happens.

  275. But before we do that,

  276. I want us to consider

  277. why Jesus uses

  278. the three illustrations

  279. of giving to the needy

  280. or almsgiving,

  281. prayer,

  282. and fasting.

  283. Why do you think

  284. He uses these three?

  285. Do you think

  286. that these three activities

  287. are particularly susceptible

  288. to hypocrisy?

  289. Or that these three activities

  290. are of particular value

  291. in our pursuit

  292. of righteousness?

  293. I don't think

  294. that either

  295. is true.

  296. All three of these things

  297. we'll see

  298. are things that we should be doing

  299. as Christian people,

  300. as disciples of Jesus Christ.

  301. But I don't think

  302. they're particular

  303. for that reason,

  304. for our instruction,

  305. as these are more important

  306. than others.

  307. But these

  308. were the most important acts

  309. of personal piety

  310. for the falsely religious

  311. of Jesus' day.

  312. They elevated these three

  313. in personal piety.

  314. So the scribes

  315. and the Pharisees

  316. would have talked lots

  317. about almsgivings

  318. and prayer

  319. and fasting.

  320. You want to be viewed

  321. as personally pious?

  322. These are the things

  323. that you will pick up.

  324. So Jesus is not so much

  325. building for us

  326. what true religion looks like,

  327. merely these three practices,

  328. but He's dismantling

  329. the hypocrisy

  330. of His day.

  331. He's very poignantly speaking

  332. the hypocrisy

  333. of His day.

  334. So,

  335. we may find

  336. that we are

  337. given to hypocrisy

  338. in these activities.

  339. It's so very possible

  340. to do

  341. the very thing

  342. that people

  343. in Jesus' day

  344. were doing,

  345. but we should not

  346. limit the teaching here

  347. to these activities.

  348. What else

  349. might you do

  350. to seek

  351. the approval

  352. of others?

  353. what might you do

  354. because you want

  355. others

  356. to think

  357. that you are

  358. particularly

  359. holy?

  360. I could list

  361. a slew of things

  362. that could fit

  363. in this

  364. category.

  365. How are your

  366. actions and intentions

  367. inconsistent

  368. with your stated

  369. moral standards

  370. or beliefs?

  371. And I pray for this

  372. for us this morning.

  373. Well,

  374. it's been my prayer for us

  375. across the last couple

  376. of weeks

  377. to this morning

  378. so that we would all

  379. find ourselves

  380. carefully examining

  381. our lives

  382. in the coming moments

  383. and beyond

  384. that God would reveal

  385. any hypocrisy in us

  386. so that we would be

  387. brought

  388. to repentance.

  389. So again,

  390. the exhortation

  391. for us

  392. this morning

  393. from the words

  394. of Jesus.

  395. Beware of

  396. practicing

  397. your righteousness

  398. before other people

  399. in order to be

  400. seen by them

  401. for then you will

  402. have no reward

  403. from your Father

  404. who is in heaven.

  405. So let's

  406. look at them

  407. and we'll look at them

  408. in three points

  409. following each

  410. of the examples.

  411. Number one,

  412. do not give

  413. like the hypocrites

  414. but rather look

  415. to heavenly reward.

  416. Let me see this

  417. in verses 2, 3, and 4.

  418. Do not give

  419. like the hypocrites

  420. but rather look

  421. to heavenly reward.

  422. Notice first,

  423. verse 2,

  424. the observance.

  425. Thus,

  426. when you give

  427. to the needy,

  428. thus,

  429. in your alms

  430. giving,

  431. this is practice

  432. that was going on

  433. in their day.

  434. Jesus does not do away

  435. with the practice.

  436. We are also meant

  437. to give to the needy

  438. in our day

  439. but in a particular way.

  440. In Jesus' day,

  441. the giving of alms

  442. had been taken

  443. to extreme measures

  444. in Second Temple Judaism.

  445. In rabbinical teaching,

  446. we can read things

  447. like this.

  448. I quote,

  449. It is better to give

  450. to charity

  451. than to lay up gold.

  452. I think we're on board

  453. so far.

  454. However,

  455. for charity

  456. will save a man

  457. from death.

  458. It will expiate sin

  459. or atone

  460. for sin.

  461. So,

  462. works.

  463. Second Temple Judaism,

  464. the Pharisees were teaching

  465. that giving

  466. would cancel out

  467. sin.

  468. Does that heresy

  469. sound familiar?

  470. As a result,

  471. many in Jesus' time

  472. thought that the rich

  473. were much more likely

  474. to make it to heaven.

  475. And they would make

  476. a big deal,

  477. a big fanfare

  478. out of this giving.

  479. This is why Jesus' statement

  480. in Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:24

  481. verse 24,

  482. was so shocking

  483. to the disciples.

  484. He said there,

  485. I tell you,

  486. it is easier

  487. for a camel

  488. to go through

  489. the eye of a needle

  490. than for a rich person

  491. to enter

  492. the kingdom of God.

  493. That's the context

  494. behind that statement.

  495. And do you recall

  496. the response

  497. of the disciples

  498. in verse 25?

  499. They were greatly

  500. astonished,

  501. Matthew says,

  502. and they asked,

  503. who then can be saved?

  504. If the rich

  505. can't do enough

  506. almsgiving,

  507. then who can?

  508. And Jesus is destroying

  509. this type of thinking,

  510. this earning favor

  511. before God,

  512. thinking apart from

  513. the perfect life,

  514. death,

  515. and resurrection

  516. of Jesus Christ.

  517. So,

  518. that is the observance.

  519. That's what they're doing

  520. in this day.

  521. And second,

  522. we see the prohibition.

  523. Jesus says,

  524. sound no trumpet

  525. before you,

  526. as the hypocrites

  527. do in the synagogues

  528. and in the streets.

  529. It would seem

  530. that they held parades

  531. when they were coming

  532. to the temple

  533. to give their money.

  534. People would look at them

  535. and praise them

  536. for their good doing.

  537. And Jesus tells us,

  538. thirdly,

  539. what their intent is.

  540. That they may be praised

  541. by others.

  542. That they would be

  543. seeking the approval

  544. of others.

  545. The building up

  546. of others.

  547. That they would please

  548. praise men.

  549. And what is the reward

  550. for this?

  551. Fourth,

  552. Jesus says,

  553. truly I say to you,

  554. they have received

  555. their reward.

  556. And what is that reward?

  557. The praise of men.

  558. what a paltry reward.

  559. What an insignificant reward.

  560. And it's such a shame

  561. in our culture

  562. that what we seem

  563. to worship most

  564. is celebrity.

  565. Not intelligence.

  566. Not good doing.

  567. There are people

  568. who are famous

  569. for being famous

  570. in our culture.

  571. this is an astonishing

  572. thing.

  573. All of the acclaim.

  574. All of the praise.

  575. You have people

  576. on shows,

  577. talent shows,

  578. weeping.

  579. This is the dream

  580. of my life.

  581. That what?

  582. That for a moment

  583. people would praise me.

  584. That I would be

  585. the next

  586. America's whatever.

  587. insignificant reward.

  588. Paltry

  589. compared to the reward

  590. of heaven.

  591. Who cares

  592. if people like us

  593. if we're not

  594. pleasing God?

  595. So this is a

  596. declaration

  597. of

  598. judgment.

  599. Truly I say to you,

  600. they have received

  601. their reward.

  602. And we'll see

  603. some repetition

  604. of that

  605. very

  606. phrase.

  607. Look then though

  608. at the beginning

  609. of verse 3

  610. at the better

  611. observance.

  612. Jesus says,

  613. but when you give

  614. to the needy.

  615. So give,

  616. and we talked

  617. some weeks ago

  618. about giving

  619. and the necessity

  620. of giving,

  621. so we're not going

  622. to spend a lot

  623. of time on

  624. that very topic.

  625. But we are meant

  626. to give.

  627. We are meant

  628. to recognize

  629. that all good

  630. things come

  631. from God.

  632. When you begin

  633. to realize

  634. that the blessings

  635. that God

  636. has given you

  637. are meant

  638. for you

  639. to turn around

  640. and bless

  641. others

  642. and that

  643. that is good

  644. for you,

  645. that that duty

  646. is married

  647. with delight,

  648. this will be

  649. a turning point

  650. in your life

  651. in America.

  652. When you actually

  653. begin to wrap

  654. your brain

  655. around this fact

  656. that God

  657. doesn't give you

  658. things just

  659. for you,

  660. but for others

  661. which is for

  662. your good.

  663. That you might

  664. gain more

  665. of Him

  666. in the process.

  667. So when you

  668. give to the

  669. needy,

  670. do not let

  671. your left

  672. hand know

  673. what your

  674. right hand

  675. is doing.

  676. And clearly

  677. this is an

  678. exaggeration.

  679. This is not

  680. a possible

  681. act to do.

  682. Jesus is trying

  683. to help us

  684. understand

  685. that this

  686. should so

  687. be done

  688. in a way

  689. that we're

  690. not being

  691. praised

  692. by men.

  693. See if you

  694. can get

  695. the left

  696. hand of your

  697. body to not

  698. know what's

  699. happening

  700. with the

  701. right hand

  702. of your

  703. body.

  704. Jesus is

  705. saying do

  706. it in

  707. that way.

  708. Do it

  709. in a way

  710. that is

  711. fully fixed

  712. on pleasing

  713. the Lord

  714. and not

  715. men.

  716. So that

  717. your giving

  718. may be

  719. in secret.

  720. And then

  721. there's this

  722. better reward.

  723. And your

  724. Father who

  725. sees in

  726. secret

  727. will reward

  728. you.

  729. This is the

  730. reward we

  731. want.

  732. This is what

  733. we're seeking

  734. after.

  735. as followers

  736. of Jesus

  737. Christ.

  738. If that is

  739. an astounding

  740. thing to

  741. you,

  742. but why?

  743. Why would I

  744. seek the

  745. reward of

  746. heaven and

  747. not the

  748. reward of

  749. earth?

  750. Then you

  751. have not

  752. tasted and

  753. seen the

  754. goodness of

  755. God.

  756. If you've

  757. beheld God

  758. in his

  759. glory,

  760. this should

  761. ignite you.

  762. You should

  763. come to

  764. life at the

  765. thought of

  766. heavenly

  767. reward.

  768. At putting

  769. off reward

  770. for now,

  771. for reward

  772. for later,

  773. ought to

  774. make you

  775. go,

  776. yes.

  777. I don't

  778. want to

  779. be found

  780. as these

  781. people.

  782. I don't

  783. want Jesus

  784. to say

  785. of me,

  786. of my

  787. life,

  788. truly I

  789. say to

  790. you,

  791. you've

  792. already

  793. received

  794. your reward.

  795. I want

  796. to lay

  797. it up

  798. for later

  799. because it

  800. is better

  801. later.

  802. He gives

  803. us another

  804. example,

  805. another

  806. illustration.

  807. So secondly,

  808. do not

  809. pray like

  810. the

  811. hypocrites,

  812. but rather

  813. look to

  814. heavenly

  815. reward.

  816. Verses

  817. 5 and

  818. 8.

  819. And there's

  820. a repetition

  821. in the

  822. pattern here.

  823. So he gives

  824. a couple of

  825. instructions,

  826. but you see

  827. the pattern

  828. once again,

  829. these six

  830. points.

  831. Beginning of

  832. verse 5 and

  833. the beginning

  834. of verse 7.

  835. And when

  836. you pray.

  837. So certainly

  838. not teaching us

  839. not to pray,

  840. but he's

  841. teaching us

  842. to pray

  843. in a very

  844. particular

  845. way.

  846. So first

  847. we see

  848. this observance

  849. and when

  850. you pray.

  851. And then

  852. we see

  853. the prohibition.

  854. How are we

  855. to not

  856. pray then?

  857. We must

  858. not be

  859. like the

  860. hypocrites,

  861. for they

  862. love to

  863. stand and

  864. pray in

  865. the synagogues

  866. and at

  867. the street

  868. corners.

  869. They love

  870. to go out

  871. in the

  872. public

  873. places

  874. seeking

  875. the praise

  876. of men.

  877. This is

  878. what they're

  879. hoping for.

  880. Look at

  881. how holy

  882. I am.

  883. And we're

  884. also not

  885. to heap

  886. up empty

  887. phrases as

  888. the Gentiles

  889. do.

  890. As those

  891. outside

  892. the family

  893. of God,

  894. we're not

  895. to heap

  896. up empty

  897. phrases as

  898. the Gentiles.

  899. And you

  900. can see

  901. the intent

  902. then,

  903. thirdly,

  904. that they

  905. may be

  906. seen by

  907. others,

  908. and the

  909. Gentiles

  910. think that

  911. they will

  912. be heard

  913. for their

  914. many

  915. words.

  916. And the

  917. reward again,

  918. truly I

  919. say to

  920. you,

  921. they have

  922. received

  923. their

  924. reward.

  925. But then

  926. Jesus,

  927. once again,

  928. gives us

  929. a better

  930. observance.

  931. A better

  932. observance.

  933. But when

  934. you

  935. pray,

  936. go into

  937. your room

  938. and shut

  939. the door

  940. and pray

  941. to your

  942. Father

  943. who is

  944. in secret.

  945. We have

  946. been,

  947. by the

  948. sacrificial

  949. work of

  950. Jesus Christ,

  951. who intercedes

  952. for us,

  953. drawn into

  954. a relationship

  955. with God.

  956. Here Jesus

  957. calls him

  958. our

  959. Father.

  960. What a

  961. glorious thing

  962. this is.

  963. At the

  964. almighty of

  965. heaven and

  966. earth,

  967. the one who

  968. spoke all

  969. things into

  970. existence,

  971. will have

  972. a conversation

  973. with us.

  974. This should

  975. be massively

  976. humbling.

  977. And once

  978. again,

  979. if it doesn't

  980. seem massive

  981. to you,

  982. that you

  983. could go

  984. into your

  985. room and

  986. shut the

  987. door and

  988. spend time

  989. with God

  990. in prayer,

  991. then you've

  992. not tasted

  993. and seen

  994. the goodness

  995. of God.

  996. You have

  997. not understood

  998. the vastness

  999. of his

  1000. power and

  1001. his might.

  1002. You have

  1003. a small

  1004. view of

  1005. God.

  1006. He's not

  1007. just the

  1008. guy that

  1009. you go

  1010. hang out

  1011. with.

  1012. He's the

  1013. God of

  1014. the universe

  1015. and yet

  1016. he's called

  1017. our Father.

  1018. I love,

  1019. and we'll

  1020. talk about

  1021. next week,

  1022. Lord willing,

  1023. the opening

  1024. of the

  1025. Lord's

  1026. prayer is

  1027. our Father

  1028. in Heaven.

  1029. Wraps

  1030. all that

  1031. up together.

  1032. Our

  1033. Father

  1034. in Heaven.

  1035. And I

  1036. have learned

  1037. things about

  1038. God's loving

  1039. kindness towards

  1040. me as a

  1041. father in

  1042. becoming a

  1043. father.

  1044. And I can't

  1045. help but be

  1046. moved when my

  1047. kids want to

  1048. come and talk

  1049. with me in the

  1050. way that they

  1051. climb up on

  1052. my lap and

  1053. they sit.

  1054. And as an

  1055. imperfect

  1056. father, a

  1057. very imperfect

  1058. father, my

  1059. attention is

  1060. riveted on

  1061. them.

  1062. God does

  1063. this with

  1064. us.

  1065. So we can

  1066. go into our

  1067. room and we

  1068. can shut the

  1069. door and we

  1070. can pray to

  1071. our Father

  1072. who is in

  1073. secret.

  1074. Does this

  1075. mean that we

  1076. cannot pray

  1077. publicly?

  1078. No.

  1079. It does not

  1080. mean that.

  1081. Many have

  1082. made that mean

  1083. that.

  1084. It does not

  1085. mean that.

  1086. It just

  1087. means that we

  1088. should be

  1089. careful about

  1090. the intent

  1091. of our

  1092. public

  1093. prayers.

  1094. It's good

  1095. for us when

  1096. we gather

  1097. together.

  1098. I would

  1099. even suggest

  1100. necessary for

  1101. us as we

  1102. gather together

  1103. that we

  1104. pray together.

  1105. But as

  1106. someone comes

  1107. to lead us

  1108. in public

  1109. prayer, we

  1110. should be so

  1111. careful about

  1112. the intent.

  1113. Am I

  1114. leading us in

  1115. prayer because

  1116. I want us to

  1117. be pleasing to

  1118. God as we

  1119. pray together

  1120. or because I

  1121. am concerned

  1122. about what

  1123. you'll think

  1124. of me in

  1125. my praying?

  1126. We see

  1127. public prayer

  1128. happening in

  1129. the Scripture.

  1130. I just want

  1131. to give you

  1132. one example.

  1133. Acts 1

    Acts 1:14

  1134. verse 14.

  1135. The disciples

  1136. are waiting.

  1137. Jesus has

  1138. said, wait

  1139. for me.

  1140. Wait for my

  1141. power to

  1142. come.

  1143. And what

  1144. do we find

  1145. them doing

  1146. in an

  1147. upper room?

  1148. All these

  1149. with one

  1150. accord were

  1151. devoting

  1152. themselves to

  1153. prayer together

  1154. with the

  1155. women and

  1156. Mary the

  1157. mother of

  1158. Jesus and

  1159. his brothers.

  1160. They were

  1161. together and

  1162. they were

  1163. praying together.

  1164. People were

  1165. praying out

  1166. loud together

  1167. in this

  1168. place and

  1169. we should

  1170. do the

  1171. same.

  1172. But we

  1173. should be

  1174. very careful

  1175. the intent

  1176. of what we

  1177. do when

  1178. we pray

  1179. publicly.

  1180. We also

  1181. see in this

  1182. better observance

  1183. Jesus simply

  1184. says, do not

  1185. be like them.

  1186. And who is

  1187. he referring

  1188. to?

  1189. He's referring

  1190. to these

  1191. Gentiles,

  1192. right, that

  1193. heap up

  1194. empty phrases,

  1195. thinking that

  1196. they'll be

  1197. heard for

  1198. their many

  1199. words.

  1200. And does

  1201. this mean

  1202. that we

  1203. cannot pray

  1204. long?

  1205. prayers?

  1206. Many will

  1207. take the

  1208. Lord's

  1209. prayer and

  1210. recite it.

  1211. And I'm

  1212. okay with

  1213. the recitation

  1214. of the

  1215. Lord's

  1216. prayer.

  1217. I don't

  1218. think that's

  1219. particularly

  1220. sinful.

  1221. However,

  1222. Jesus doesn't

  1223. say pray

  1224. this.

  1225. He says

  1226. pray then

  1227. like this.

  1228. This is a

  1229. model for

  1230. your praying.

  1231. But some

  1232. will advocate

  1233. the recitation

  1234. of this because

  1235. it's brief.

  1236. We should

  1237. keep things

  1238. brief because

  1239. he says don't

  1240. be like the

  1241. Gentiles.

  1242. Heap up

  1243. many words.

  1244. So is that

  1245. what it

  1246. means?

  1247. No.

  1248. But we

  1249. should not

  1250. pray long

  1251. prayers because

  1252. we think that

  1253. lengthy prayers

  1254. are a mark

  1255. of holiness.

  1256. Even when I'm

  1257. by myself,

  1258. right, in that

  1259. time of

  1260. closed-door

  1261. secret prayer,

  1262. I should not

  1263. think of

  1264. myself,

  1265. wow, can I

  1266. pray?

  1267. Look at the

  1268. words I can

  1269. spill out

  1270. before God.

  1271. And certainly

  1272. in our public

  1273. praying together,

  1274. we shouldn't

  1275. heap up

  1276. words and

  1277. words and

  1278. words upon

  1279. words because

  1280. people will

  1281. think we're

  1282. so holy

  1283. for how much

  1284. we have

  1285. to say.

  1286. How can I

  1287. make this

  1288. claim to

  1289. counterpoint

  1290. what some

  1291. would say

  1292. here?

  1293. Jesus

  1294. prayed long

  1295. prayers.

  1296. Luke 6,

    Luke 6:12

  1297. verse 12,

  1298. Luke says,

  1299. in these days

  1300. he went out

  1301. to the mountain

  1302. to pray,

  1303. and all

  1304. night he

  1305. continued in

  1306. prayer to

  1307. God.

  1308. It would be

  1309. very silly to

  1310. think that he

  1311. recited the

  1312. Lord's Prayer

  1313. over and

  1314. over and

  1315. over again.

  1316. Many words

  1317. poured out

  1318. to God in

  1319. those times

  1320. of prayer

  1321. with him.

  1322. And then

  1323. Jesus says

  1324. there will

  1325. be a

  1326. better reward.

  1327. A better

  1328. reward.

  1329. And your

  1330. Father who

  1331. sees in

  1332. secret will

  1333. reward you.

  1334. So we're

  1335. looking to

  1336. the heavenly

  1337. reward to

  1338. the eternal

  1339. reward.

  1340. And Jesus

  1341. also says,

  1342. for your

  1343. Father knows

  1344. what you

  1345. need before

  1346. you ask

  1347. him.

  1348. So it

  1349. means reward

  1350. for now

  1351. as well.

  1352. His presence

  1353. and his

  1354. power in

  1355. our lives.

  1356. And the

  1357. third

  1358. illustration.

  1359. It says,

  1360. do not

  1361. fast like

  1362. the hypocrites,

  1363. but rather

  1364. look to

  1365. heavenly

  1366. reward.

  1367. Do not

  1368. fast like

  1369. the hypocrites.

  1370. And I

  1371. think we

  1372. will spend

  1373. some time

  1374. on fasting

  1375. in some

  1376. coming weeks.

  1377. But briefly

  1378. look again

  1379. the observance.

  1380. And when

  1381. you

  1382. fast.

  1383. Again in

  1384. verse 17,

  1385. but when

  1386. you

  1387. fast.

  1388. I think

  1389. this is a

  1390. practice that

  1391. many in

  1392. this room

  1393. have never

  1394. done and

  1395. probably

  1396. misunderstand.

  1397. But the

  1398. assumption here

  1399. is that we

  1400. will.

  1401. As we'll be

  1402. part of

  1403. our

  1404. following

  1405. of

  1406. Jesus

  1407. Christ

  1408. will be

  1409. times of

  1410. fasting

  1411. in our

  1412. lives.

  1413. But he

  1414. issues a

  1415. prohibition.

  1416. Do not

  1417. look gloomy

  1418. like the

  1419. hypocrites

  1420. for they

  1421. disfigure

  1422. their faces.

  1423. They would

  1424. literally put

  1425. on makeup

  1426. to look

  1427. pitiful.

  1428. And what

  1429. he's saying

  1430. to us here

  1431. is that you're

  1432. not doing

  1433. this to be

  1434. seen by

  1435. others.

  1436. I've had

  1437. people who

  1438. are fasting

  1439. tell me

  1440. they're

  1441. fasting and

  1442. then tell me

  1443. they probably

  1444. shouldn't have

  1445. told me that

  1446. they were

  1447. fasting.

  1448. He's also

  1449. not prohibiting

  1450. that.

  1451. Like, oh, I

  1452. shouldn't have

  1453. said that.

  1454. Like, my

  1455. fasting is

  1456. supposed to be

  1457. so secretive

  1458. that no one

  1459. can possibly

  1460. know that

  1461. I'm fasting.

  1462. No, he's

  1463. getting that

  1464. intent.

  1465. Why are you

  1466. doing the

  1467. thing that

  1468. you're doing?

  1469. Right?

  1470. Is it for the

  1471. praise of

  1472. others or

  1473. is it to

  1474. please God?

  1475. So we're

  1476. prohibited here

  1477. by Jesus to

  1478. not look gloomy

  1479. like the

  1480. hypocrites, for

  1481. they disfigure

  1482. their faces and

  1483. the intent that

  1484. their fasting

  1485. may be seen

  1486. by others.

  1487. And once

  1488. again, this

  1489. repetition, their

  1490. reward, truly I

  1491. say to you, they

  1492. have received

  1493. their reward.

  1494. But then he

  1495. gives to us the

  1496. better observance,

  1497. but when you

  1498. fast, anoint your

  1499. head, wash your

  1500. face, make

  1501. yourself look

  1502. nice, presentable

  1503. to those around

  1504. you, that your

  1505. fasting may not be

  1506. seen by others,

  1507. but by your

  1508. father who is

  1509. in secret.

  1510. And then the

  1511. better reward.

  1512. And your

  1513. father who sees

  1514. in secret will

  1515. reward you.

  1516. So you see how

  1517. all of these,

  1518. these 17 verses

  1519. are aiming us

  1520. back at verse

  1521. 1.

  1522. And this

  1523. strong warning,

  1524. this beware of

  1525. practicing your

  1526. righteousness before

  1527. other people in

  1528. order to be seen

  1529. by them.

  1530. for then you

  1531. will have no

  1532. reward from your

  1533. father who is in

  1534. heaven.

  1535. So we ought not

  1536. give or pray or

  1537. fast or do

  1538. anything

  1539. hypocritically,

  1540. seeking the praise

  1541. of man, but

  1542. should rather do

  1543. everything to

  1544. please God and

  1545. the reward that

  1546. is given by him

  1547. and found in

  1548. him.

  1549. I hope that

  1550. you will join

  1551. me in continued

  1552. self-examination

  1553. in our devotion

  1554. to God for

  1555. our good and

  1556. his glory as

  1557. we work in

  1558. this text more

  1559. in the following

  1560. weeks.

  1561. As we look more

  1562. at what is the

  1563. right way to go

  1564. about praying,

  1565. I think we'll

  1566. spend two or

  1567. three weeks there

  1568. and how ought

  1569. we also

  1570. fast.

  1571. Let me close

  1572. this morning

  1573. with a quotation

  1574. from Thomas

  1575. Brooks who was

  1576. a 17th century

  1577. Puritan preacher.

  1578. It was on your

  1579. bulletin the last

  1580. two weeks,

  1581. but I just didn't

  1582. feel like I could

  1583. put it on there

  1584. one more time.

  1585. So if you

  1586. happen to have

  1587. an old bulletin

  1588. you could read

  1589. along.

  1590. If not,

  1591. listen carefully.

  1592. He wrote this,

  1593. which I love.

  1594. Remember this,

  1595. that your life

  1596. is short,

  1597. your duties

  1598. many,

  1599. your assistance

  1600. great,

  1601. and your reward

  1602. sure.

  1603. Therefore,

  1604. faint not,

  1605. hold on and

  1606. hold up in

  1607. ways of well-doing,

  1608. and heaven

  1609. shall make

  1610. amends

  1611. for all.

  1612. Let's pray

  1613. together.

  1614. Thank you.
