  1. Commonly called the Sermon on the Mount.

  2. And we've been spending the last couple of weeks on the matter of prayer and how Jesus modeled for us to pray.

  3. Today's text is going to be Matthew 6, verses 11-18.

    Matthew 6:11–18

  4. But the larger context, I think, is really going to serve us well this morning.

  5. So, I'm going to begin reading in verse 1 of chapter 6 and on through verse 18.

  6. So follow along with me.

  7. But before I read, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  8. It was written for His glory and our good.

  9. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  10. Matthew 6, beginning in verse 1 and following.

  11. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.

  12. For then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

  13. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets.

  14. That they may be praised by others.

  15. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  16. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

  17. So that your giving may be in secret.

  18. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  19. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites.

  20. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners.

  21. That they may be seen by others.

  22. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

  23. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.

  24. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  25. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do.

  26. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  27. Do not be like them.

  28. For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  29. Pray then like this.

  30. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

  31. Your kingdom come.

  32. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  33. Give us this day our daily bread.

  34. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors.

  35. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  36. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

  37. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

  38. And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.

  39. For they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others.

  40. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

  41. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face.

  42. That your fasting may not be seen by others, but by your Father who is in secret.

  43. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  44. As we saw over the past two weeks, Jesus teaches us that those who can call God Father

  45. can approach Him because of the personal work of Jesus Christ boldly,

  46. with reverence and awe, and make their requests known to Him.

  47. And so we worked over the past two weeks on verses 9 and 10.

  48. And I gave you four points from that, which contained in them the exhortation to pray.

  49. We ought to be people who pray.

  50. And we should pray like Jesus, our Father in heaven.

  51. Our Father in heaven.

  52. We should be approaching Him with bold reverence.

  53. Because we belong to Him.

  54. We are His children and He cares for us.

  55. We then noted that the first three petitions of Jesus' model prayer are aimed Godward.

  56. They're not aimed at us in our praying.

  57. They're aimed toward Him.

  58. So our second point in the first petition was,

  59. Pray like Jesus, hallowed be Your name.

  60. Your name be known.

  61. Your name be praised.

  62. Honored.

  63. Reverenced be Your name.

  64. The second petition and our third point was pray like Jesus.

  65. Your kingdom come.

  66. As those who belong to the kingdom of God and are sojourning in this place,

  67. we ought to want to see the full fruition of God's reign in this world.

  68. We want to see this come to pass.

  69. And the fourth point and third petition,

  70. don't feel like you have to track me through that.

  71. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

  72. There are people who long for that,

  73. to see God's final and full reign here on the earth.

  74. So the first three are Godward.

  75. They're aimed at His acclaim, His fame, His glory.

  76. The final three petitions all speak to our great dependence on this God.

  77. How much we need this God to act.

  78. I hope that you know enough of yourself and enough of God to see your great need of prayer.

  79. Sadly, too many of us pray too little,

  80. which can be a great sign of arrogant self-sufficiency.

  81. You think far too much of yourself if you don't find yourself pleading before God everything.

  82. We functionally say that we do not need God's presence or power.

  83. We have it all figured out on our own.

  84. And what a terrible deception this is.

  85. We are utterly dependent upon God for our very being.

  86. He is our creator and He is our sustainer.

  87. And we accomplish no good thing apart from Him.

  88. David writes, King David, in Psalm 62, verses 5 through 8,

    Psalms 62:5–8

  89. For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him.

  90. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress, I shall not be shaken.

  91. On God rests my salvation and my glory, my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

  92. Trust in Him at all times, O people.

  93. Pour out your heart before Him.

  94. God is a refuge for us.

  95. God is a refuge for us.

  96. Which reads, I read it to you previously, verse 1.

  97. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.

  98. For then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

  99. And the teaching on fasting comes up most certainly underneath this overall exhortation of Jesus in verse 1.

  100. And so last week, as I won't be here next week and Clay will be preaching in my stead, I said to Clay,

  101. Hey Clay, why don't you preach the text on fasting?

  102. And he said, Well, it kind of goes with what you've been talking about.

  103. You started off and you've referenced it already.

  104. And addressing Matthew chapter 6, verse 1.

    Matthew 6:1

  105. And we had a good conversation about that.

  106. And I said, You know, I'll handle it.

  107. I'll take it and let you move on to the beginning of verse 19.

  108. And Clay said, That'd be great because that's a great text.

  109. I'm looking forward to doing that.

  110. So I was kind of thinking, like, I'm just going to pick up the pieces, kind of the leftover parts of this.

  111. Wrongly, I thought this way.

  112. I thought, Well, somehow I'll make this work together.

  113. In fact, I thought it'd be a little sporadic.

  114. Okay, there's going to be three unrelated points this morning.

  115. But not at all.

  116. Upon further reflection on the text, I noticed that it is chiastic.

  117. This is your big word for the day, chiastic.

  118. This means that if you look at the text and you took it and you folded it on verse 13.

  119. Can you imagine taking the text and folding it on verse 13?

  120. The beginning of the text, verse 11, and the end of the text, verses 16 through 18,

  121. are reflexive of each other.

  122. They communicate together.

  123. They're topically thematic.

  124. And then you take a step in on the text as well.

  125. And the same thing happens until you arrive at the very center of it, being verse 13.

  126. Let me show you what I mean using the text itself.

  127. So if we were to label, which are in my notes, I know that you can't see.

  128. But if we were to label verse 11 as A, right?

  129. Give us this day our daily bread.

  130. And then verse 12, this prayer of forgiveness as B.

  131. And then verse 13, this prayer for deliverance from evil as C.

  132. So we've got this progression A, B, C.

  133. Then you come back out of that fold of verse 13.

  134. And you see verse 14 and 15 is again about forgiveness.

  135. Right?

  136. So notice verse 12 and verse 14 and 15 and the way that they communicate.

  137. The same content here.

  138. Jesus expands upon this idea he presents initially in verse 12.

  139. And then the same thing, I believe, happens beginning in verse 16 and through the end of the text,

  140. going back to give us this day our daily bread.

  141. So the text is chiastic.

  142. And there's lots of these chiasms in the Scripture.

  143. And people can take them and do all kinds of bizarre things with them.

  144. I'm not suggesting that at all.

  145. The text still means what the text means on its surface.

  146. But it helps us to see the beauty of Jesus' mind.

  147. Right?

  148. He is just speaking this.

  149. And he uses this very common chiastic literary structure just in his regular speaking.

  150. It's just a fascinating thing to see the way that all of it's intertwined together.

  151. So, in our points today, we'll take verse 11 along with verses 16 through 18,

  152. verse 12 along with verse 14 and 15, and verse 13.

  153. And I'll walk you through that this morning.

  154. So, the first point for this morning is pray like Jesus.

  155. Give us this day our daily bread.

  156. Give us this day our daily bread.

  157. The first of today's petitions in Jesus' model prayer,

  158. it's the fourth in the total prayer,

  159. but the first of today's petition is for our very basic physical need, food.

  160. For our very basic sustenance.

  161. And the request, the way Jesus teaches us this,

  162. draws upon God's provision for the Israelites found in Exodus chapter 16.

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  163. Familiar with the story of manna from heaven.

  164. In verse 2, we can read Exodus chapter 16,

    Exodus 16 chapter mention

  165. and the whole congregation of the people of Israel

  166. grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

  167. And the people of Israel said to them,

  168. Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt

  169. when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full,

  170. for you have brought us out into this wilderness

  171. to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

  172. They said, we would rather be back in Egypt

  173. and die at the hand of our oppressors

  174. and have full bellies

  175. than to be out here in the wilderness and starving.

  176. And then in verse 4,

  177. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  178. Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you,

  179. and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day

  180. that I may test them whether they will walk in my law or not.

  181. So, they were to gather up just enough to eat for that day.

  182. And on the sixth day,

  183. they were to gather two days' worth

  184. so that they could rest on a seventh day.

  185. And this was enacted.

  186. God intended for them to do this

  187. to see if they would trust Him

  188. and walk in His commandments.

  189. And we know they didn't,

  190. and manna rotted,

  191. and the story goes on from there.

  192. In the evening, He provided quail,

  193. and they were able to eat meat as well.

  194. So, Jesus is drawing on this type of image.

  195. Give us our daily bread,

  196. our manna from heaven.

  197. And we, in the same way,

  198. are meant to be trusting God in that way.

  199. Each and every day,

  200. trusting that He will provide for our physical needs.

  201. So, in the case of the Israelites,

  202. sojourning in the wilderness,

  203. God provided bread and this meat miraculously.

  204. Amazingly, the dew would lift

  205. and left behind would be this bread

  206. that they would turn into cakes.

  207. Is this the way that normatively God provides today?

  208. It's not, right?

  209. But by what means does God normatively provide

  210. our daily bread?

  211. Through work.

  212. He gives us work.

  213. And we apply ourselves

  214. in the energy that He gives us to work.

  215. And in most cases,

  216. your employer gives you money

  217. and you use your money

  218. to go buy your bread

  219. or whatever else you may buy to eat.

  220. But we make a grievous mistake

  221. when we don't think that comes from God above.

  222. When we don't pray in this way.

  223. When we are not concerned at all

  224. about where our provision is coming from

  225. because our kitchens are so fully stocked.

  226. When we think that it's by the labor of our hands

  227. that these things have been gained

  228. rather than seeing that it's God employing means

  229. to His great ends of provision.

  230. And so remembering that we're to pray like Jesus in this way

  231. helps us to look to the one

  232. from whom all good things come.

  233. To trust Him in all things.

  234. It only takes a few moments

  235. when you feel any anxiety

  236. for the provision of your life

  237. to think back across

  238. all of the days that you have lived.

  239. And I would challenge you to take a calculator

  240. and multiply 365

  241. by how many years you've lived

  242. and say God has provided

  243. this many days.

  244. And He will continue to provide

  245. for today

  246. and tomorrow

  247. and the next.

  248. And on.

  249. A Spurgeon quote on your bulletin today says,

  250. God sends every bird its food

  251. but He does not throw it into the nest.

  252. He gives us our daily bread

  253. but it is through our own labor.

  254. Ephesians chapter 4 verse 28.

    Ephesians 4:28

  255. Paul writes the following

  256. and it's believed by most

  257. that he's directing what he says in verse 28

  258. to those who are part of the church

  259. and were not working

  260. but were receiving the benefit,

  261. the benefit,

  262. the generosity

  263. of those in the church.

  264. They were coming and eating meals

  265. with the church

  266. but they weren't providing anything

  267. for those meals.

  268. And Paul writes this,

  269. Ephesians 4 verse 28.

    Ephesians 4:28

  270. Let the thief no longer steal

  271. but rather let him labor

  272. doing honest work

  273. with his own hands.

  274. And I find it fascinating

  275. the way Paul concludes this verse.

  276. Not so that he can eat for himself

  277. but it goes beyond that even

  278. so that he may have something to share

  279. with anyone who is in need.

  280. Certainly there's provision for himself

  281. but he's to work,

  282. to labor if he's able

  283. so that he has something to share with others.

  284. So we in the same way

  285. are meant to pray

  286. not just give me my daily bread

  287. but give us this day

  288. our daily bread.

  289. Pray on behalf of others

  290. and to provide for others.

  291. So then how does the fasting piece

  292. connect to this?

  293. As I've said that this is chiastic.

  294. He goes on to give some very specific instruction

  295. about how we shouldn't

  296. and how we should fast.

  297. His predominant instruction here

  298. as previously stated

  299. ties back to chapter 6

  300. and verse 1.

  301. So he is once again

  302. confronting the hypocrisy

  303. of his day and ours.

  304. Fasting was a thing

  305. that was paraded about.

  306. It was habited in Jesus' day

  307. that on the second day of the week

  308. and on the fifth day of the week

  309. which were also the market days

  310. were also the fasting days.

  311. And so the religious elite

  312. who had nothing else to do

  313. but parade around

  314. their self-righteousness

  315. would actually disfigure themselves.

  316. They would put on makeup.

  317. They would look poor and pitiful

  318. and put on quite a show

  319. that others would see

  320. how pious they were

  321. in front of others.

  322. It was quite a production.

  323. And I wonder today

  324. if there's anybody amongst us

  325. who puts on a show

  326. and comes together

  327. in the gathering

  328. hoping that others

  329. would see them

  330. and praise them.

  331. Jesus here is dismantling

  332. the false religion

  333. that so easily entangles us.

  334. The desire to be recognized

  335. by man

  336. and to forsake

  337. seeking the pleasure of God.

  338. That he would be pleased with us

  339. and be our rewarder.

  340. Jesus tells us

  341. that when we fast

  342. we should have the outward appearance

  343. of normalcy.

  344. That's what this washing of the face

  345. and anointing the head

  346. was about.

  347. Right?

  348. The oil was typically perfumed

  349. so it made people seem

  350. less smelly

  351. in the day.

  352. So wash your hair

  353. and wash your face

  354. and don't look gloomy

  355. so that your Father

  356. who sees in secret

  357. will reward you.

  358. Now Jesus does not say

  359. if you fast

  360. but rather

  361. when you fast

  362. which would suggest

  363. that fasting

  364. should be

  365. a part of the healthy

  366. Christian life.

  367. Normative.

  368. It should be normative

  369. to the Christian life.

  370. Many faithful men and women

  371. of God in the Bible

  372. fasted.

  373. Moses,

  374. Samson,

  375. Samuel,

  376. Hannah,

  377. David,

  378. Elijah,

  379. Ezra,

  380. Nehemiah,

  381. Esther,

  382. Daniel,

  383. Anna,

  384. John the Baptist

  385. and his disciples,

  386. Jesus,

  387. Paul,

  388. and many others

  389. fasted.

  390. There's an abounding

  391. amount of examples

  392. of this in the Scripture.

  393. Fasting, however,

  394. is only commanded

  395. in the Bible

  396. one time.

  397. And it's commanded

  398. in connection

  399. with the day

  400. of atonement.

  401. And you can read

  402. about that

  403. in Leviticus

    Leviticus 16 chapter mention

  404. chapter 16

  405. and verse 29

  406. and Leviticus

    Leviticus 23 chapter mention

  407. chapter 23

  408. and verse 27.

  409. It's nowhere else

  410. commanded by God

  411. but it is

  412. commended

  413. by God.

  414. All of these

  415. men and women

  416. fasted.

  417. So,

  418. we should view it

  419. as a beneficial

  420. but non-compulsory

  421. act.

  422. a beneficial

  423. but a non-compulsory

  424. act.

  425. And so,

  426. the

  427. encouragement to you

  428. is that you should

  429. consider,

  430. have a clear

  431. understanding

  432. of what fasting is

  433. and employ it

  434. in your Christian

  435. walk.

  436. But it's not a command

  437. to you this morning

  438. and you should

  439. fast.

  440. But I think you

  441. ought to really

  442. consider the benefit

  443. of it.

  444. John Calvin wrote,

  445. many for want

  446. of knowing

  447. its usefulness

  448. undervalue

  449. its necessity

  450. and some reject

  451. it altogether

  452. as superfluous

  453. while on the

  454. other hand

  455. where the proper

  456. use of fasting

  457. is not well

  458. understood

  459. it easily

  460. degenerates

  461. into superstition.

  462. Fasting

  463. is depriving

  464. ourselves

  465. of food.

  466. A lot of people

  467. do a lot of

  468. kind of fasting.

  469. This is not

  470. what the word

  471. means in

  472. the Greek

  473. language.

  474. And I'm not

  475. saying you can't

  476. deny yourself

  477. other things.

  478. There could be

  479. a lot of good

  480. health and

  481. staying off

  482. social media

  483. for a while

  484. as an example.

  485. But when the

  486. scripture talks

  487. about fasting

  488. it's talking

  489. about denying

  490. ourselves

  491. food

  492. for a particular

  493. amount of

  494. time

  495. for a particular

  496. purpose

  497. and it is

  498. always

  499. accompanied

  500. by prayer.

  501. It's always

  502. accompanied

  503. by prayer.

  504. One can

  505. pray without

  506. fasting

  507. but you

  508. cannot

  509. fast

  510. without

  511. praying.

  512. It always

  513. walks

  514. hand in

  515. hand

  516. together

  517. and here

  518. you start

  519. to see

  520. some of

  521. this

  522. chiastic

  523. significance.

  524. Fasting is

  525. to be

  526. accompanied

  527. by

  528. prayer.

  529. And we

  530. have a

  531. number of

  532. examples.

  533. I just

  534. want to

  535. give you

  536. a few

  537. of them.

  538. I don't

  539. believe

  540. this is

  541. exhaustive

  542. but

  543. times that

  544. we see

  545. particular

  546. purposes

  547. of fasting

  548. in the

  549. scripture

  550. during times

  551. of sorrow

  552. David

  553. fasted

  554. to pray

  555. for the

  556. first child

  557. of Bathsheba

  558. which

  559. eventually

  560. died.

  561. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 12 chapter mention

  562. chapter 12

  563. and verse

  564. 16.

  565. He was

  566. grieving

  567. for the

  568. life of

  569. this child.

  570. He pleaded

  571. with God

  572. for the

  573. life of

  574. this child

  575. and he

  576. accompanied

  577. that prayer

  578. with fasting.

  579. During

  580. times of

  581. great

  582. danger

  583. King

  584. Jehoshaphat

  585. which we

  586. want to

  587. talk about

  588. just because

  589. it's fun

  590. to say

  591. Jehoshaphat

  592. proclaimed a

  593. national fast

  594. in Judah

  595. when they

  596. were threatened

  597. to be

  598. attacked

  599. in 2

    2 Chronicles 20 chapter mention

  600. Chronicles

  601. chapter 20

  602. and verse

  603. 3.

  604. We see

  605. fasting in

  606. the Bible

  607. during times

  608. of repentance

  609. when the

  610. Ninevites

  611. heard the

  612. preaching

  613. of Jonah

  614. the king

  615. of Nineveh

  616. decreed a

  617. fast

  618. this Jonah

    Jonah 3:5

  619. chapter 3

  620. verse 5

  621. and

  622. following.

  623. And during

  624. the need

  625. for

  626. clarity

  627. we see

  628. fasting

  629. the beginning

  630. of ministry

  631. and the

  632. continuation

  633. of ministry

  634. we're

  635. familiar

  636. with Jesus

  637. fasting

  638. for 40

  639. days

  640. and 40

  641. nights

  642. before

  643. beginning

  644. his

  645. ministry

  646. that one's

  647. mine

  648. Jesus

  649. fasted

  650. for 40

  651. days

  652. and 40

  653. nights

  654. before

  655. beginning

  656. his

  657. ministry

  658. before

  659. the church

  660. in Antioch

  661. set Paul

  662. and Barnabas

  663. apart

  664. for a

  665. missionary

  666. trip

  667. they were

  668. doing

  669. what?

  670. They were

  671. praying

  672. and fasting

  673. in Acts

    Acts 13:2

  674. chapter 13

  675. verse 2

  676. and 3

  677. and then

  678. they commissioned

  679. Paul and

  680. Barnabas

  681. to go

  682. as missionaries

  683. to the

  684. Gentiles

  685. and as

  686. Paul and

  687. Barnabas

  688. are going

  689. about this

  690. work

  691. it's recorded

  692. that they

  693. are praying

  694. and fasting

  695. as they

  696. appoint elders

  697. in the

  698. churches

  699. that they

  700. found

  701. Acts

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  702. chapter 14

  703. and verse

  704. 23

  705. and so

  706. fasting

  707. can be

  708. very

  709. helpful

  710. to remind

  711. us

  712. of our

  713. great

  714. need

  715. of God

  716. right

  717. as you

  718. feel the

  719. hunger

  720. in your

  721. belly

  722. you say

  723. who is it

  724. that sustains

  725. me

  726. even as

  727. I'm hungry

  728. it is my

  729. father who

  730. is in

  731. heaven

  732. who gives

  733. good gifts

  734. to his

  735. children

  736. and I

  737. ought to

  738. flee to

  739. him

  740. in prayer

  741. so I

  742. very rarely

  743. like to

  744. use myself

  745. as the

  746. model

  747. and I

  748. think that

  749. I can

  750. grow in

  751. how much

  752. and how

  753. well

  754. I fast

  755. but I

  756. set aside

  757. periodic

  758. times for

  759. fasting

  760. when there

  761. are big

  762. decisions

  763. that need

  764. to be

  765. made

  766. there's

  767. something

  768. looming

  769. on the

  770. horizon

  771. we're

  772. doing

  773. planning

  774. Doug and

  775. I

  776. right now

  777. for next

  778. year for

  779. the church

  780. and I've

  781. already

  782. taken some

  783. time

  784. a day

  785. of not

  786. eating

  787. and devoted

  788. prayer for

  789. that purpose

  790. Lord help

  791. me to

  792. see

  793. it drives

  794. me to

  795. my knees

  796. right as

  797. I feel

  798. this lack

  799. of sustenance

  800. to go to

  801. the sustainer

  802. right and

  803. to aim my

  804. praying at

  805. something very

  806. particular

  807. most every

  808. Sunday morning

  809. I fast

  810. it's the rare

  811. Sunday morning

  812. that I'll go

  813. I'm just too

  814. hungry I

  815. gotta go into

  816. the service

  817. without

  818. but often

  819. my fast

  820. is broken

  821. right from

  822. the night

  823. before when

  824. we have the

  825. Lord's Supper

  826. together in our

  827. Lord's Supper

  828. gathering

  829. before

  830. and it

  831. helps me

  832. it sets

  833. my mind

  834. moving in

  835. the right

  836. direction

  837. right

  838. I need

  839. right physical

  840. food to fill

  841. me up

  842. I need

  843. God's

  844. spirit

  845. more than

  846. that

  847. for this

  848. day

  849. right and

  850. then sometime

  851. after you guys

  852. I'll leave at

  853. 1.30 or 2

  854. I go

  855. I need lunch

  856. absolutely

  857. starving

  858. right

  859. but I do

  860. these things

  861. I purpose

  862. these things

  863. to help

  864. bring my

  865. focus

  866. to big

  867. matters

  868. that definitely

  869. need God's

  870. sustaining

  871. work

  872. so

  873. the connection

  874. to this prayer

  875. of our daily bread

  876. depriving ourselves

  877. of daily bread

  878. serves as a reminder

  879. from whom our

  880. daily bread

  881. comes from

  882. and therefore

  883. how dependent

  884. we are

  885. upon our

  886. heavenly father

  887. for all

  888. things

  889. right

  890. isn't that cool

  891. that chiastic

  892. structure

  893. there

  894. so pray like

  895. Jesus

  896. give us

  897. this day

  898. our daily

  899. bread

  900. and I'll

  901. add to that

  902. and fast

  903. from time

  904. to time

  905. to help

  906. you pray

  907. in this way

  908. secondly

  909. pray like

  910. Jesus

  911. forgive us

  912. our debts

  913. pray like

  914. Jesus

  915. forgive us

  916. our debts

  917. this is

  918. verse 12

  919. and then

  920. verse 14

  921. and 15

  922. verse 12

  923. says

  924. and forgive us

  925. our debts

  926. as we also

  927. have forgiven

  928. our debtors

  929. and then

  930. verse 14

  931. and 15

  932. elaborates

  933. on this

  934. for if you

  935. forgive

  936. others

  937. their trespasses

  938. your heavenly

  939. father will

  940. also forgive

  941. you

  942. but if you

  943. do not

  944. forgive others

  945. their trespasses

  946. neither will

  947. your heavenly

  948. father forgive

  949. your

  950. trespasses

  951. so

  952. this is a

  953. difficult

  954. text

  955. because taken

  956. on its

  957. surface

  958. it would

  959. seem that

  960. Jesus

  961. is here

  962. teaching

  963. that our

  964. forgiveness

  965. is dependent

  966. upon our

  967. willingness

  968. to forgive

  969. others

  970. that we

  971. must first

  972. forgive

  973. and then

  974. God will

  975. extend

  976. forgiveness

  977. to us

  978. right

  979. this

  980. would

  981. seem

  982. to present

  983. a works

  984. based

  985. version

  986. of

  987. salvation

  988. that

  989. our

  990. salvation

  991. is dependent

  992. upon our

  993. willingness

  994. to forgive

  995. others

  996. is this what

  997. Jesus is teaching

  998. here

  999. no

  1000. oh may it

  1001. never be

  1002. that that's

  1003. what he

  1004. is teaching

  1005. here

  1006. what he's

  1007. rather teaching

  1008. in interesting

  1009. language

  1010. is that

  1011. if we

  1012. are

  1013. forgiven

  1014. we

  1015. will

  1016. be

  1017. forgiving

  1018. and we

  1019. must

  1020. look

  1021. at

  1022. larger

  1023. context

  1024. to wrap

  1025. our brains

  1026. around that

  1027. here

  1028. so turn

  1029. with me

  1030. if you

  1031. will

  1032. to

  1033. Matthew

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  1034. chapter

  1035. 18

  1036. and

  1037. verse

  1038. 21

  1039. the parable

  1040. of the

  1041. ungracious

  1042. servant

  1043. beginning

  1044. verse 21

  1045. and following

  1046. then Peter

  1047. came up

  1048. and said

  1049. to him

  1050. Lord

  1051. how often

  1052. will my

  1053. brother

  1054. sin against

  1055. me

  1056. and I

  1057. forgive

  1058. him

  1059. as many

  1060. as seven

  1061. times

  1062. Jesus

  1063. said to

  1064. him

  1065. I do

  1066. not say

  1067. to you

  1068. seven

  1069. times

  1070. but

  1071. seventy

  1072. seven

  1073. times

  1074. so he's

  1075. essentially

  1076. saying

  1077. an infinite

  1078. amount

  1079. of times

  1080. you will

  1081. forgive

  1082. your

  1083. brother

  1084. therefore

  1085. he launches

  1086. in this

  1087. parable

  1088. the kingdom

  1089. of heaven

  1090. may be

  1091. compared

  1092. to a

  1093. king

  1094. who wished

  1095. to settle

  1096. accounts

  1097. with his

  1098. servants

  1099. when he

  1100. began to

  1101. settle

  1102. one was

  1103. brought

  1104. to him

  1105. who owed

  1106. him

  1107. ten

  1108. thousand

  1109. talents

  1110. and ten

  1111. thousand

  1112. talents

  1113. would have

  1114. been an

  1115. unpayable

  1116. debt

  1117. this would

  1118. have been

  1119. lifetime

  1120. upon lifetime

  1121. upon lifetime

  1122. of income

  1123. that's meant

  1124. to jump

  1125. out

  1126. to the

  1127. listeners

  1128. of Jesus

  1129. parable

  1130. talents

  1131. what is a

  1132. talent

  1133. we don't

  1134. get that

  1135. billions

  1136. and billions

  1137. and billions

  1138. of dollars

  1139. you need

  1140. to understand

  1141. this is

  1142. unpayable

  1143. debt

  1144. in verse

  1145. 25

  1146. and since

  1147. he could

  1148. not pay

  1149. he would

  1150. not be

  1151. able to

  1152. pay

  1153. his master

  1154. ordered him

  1155. to be

  1156. sold

  1157. with his

  1158. wife and

  1159. children

  1160. all that

  1161. he had

  1162. and payment

  1163. to be

  1164. made

  1165. so the

  1166. servant

  1167. fell on

  1168. his knees

  1169. imploring

  1170. him

  1171. have

  1172. patience

  1173. with me

  1174. and I

  1175. will

  1176. pay

  1177. you

  1178. everything

  1179. and out

  1180. of pity

  1181. for him

  1182. the master

  1183. of that

  1184. servant

  1185. released him

  1186. and forgave

  1187. him

  1188. the debt

  1189. but when

  1190. that same

  1191. servant

  1192. went out

  1193. he found

  1194. one of his

  1195. fellow servants

  1196. who owed

  1197. him a

  1198. hundred

  1199. denarii

  1200. and seizing

  1201. him he

  1202. began to

  1203. choke him

  1204. saying

  1205. pay what

  1206. you owe

  1207. now a hundred

  1208. denarii was

  1209. also a lot

  1210. of money

  1211. this would

  1212. have been

  1213. a denarii

  1214. was a day's

  1215. wage

  1216. this would

  1217. have been

  1218. a month's

  1219. worth

  1220. income

  1221. still a lot

  1222. of money

  1223. so his

  1224. fellow servant

  1225. fell down

  1226. and pleaded

  1227. with him

  1228. have patience

  1229. with me

  1230. and I

  1231. will

  1232. pay you

  1233. he refused

  1234. and went

  1235. out and put

  1236. him in prison

  1237. until he

  1238. should pay

  1239. the debt

  1240. when his

  1241. fellow servant

  1242. saw what

  1243. had taken

  1244. place

  1245. they were

  1246. greatly

  1247. distressed

  1248. and they

  1249. went and

  1250. reported to

  1251. their master

  1252. all that

  1253. had taken

  1254. place

  1255. then his

  1256. master

  1257. summoned him

  1258. and said

  1259. to him

  1260. you wicked

  1261. servant

  1262. I

  1263. forgave

  1264. you

  1265. all

  1266. that

  1267. debt

  1268. because

  1269. you

  1270. pleaded

  1271. with me

  1272. and should

  1273. not

  1274. you

  1275. have

  1276. had

  1277. mercy

  1278. on

  1279. your

  1280. fellow

  1281. servant

  1282. as I

  1283. had

  1284. mercy

  1285. on you

  1286. and in

  1287. anger

  1288. his master

  1289. delivered him

  1290. to the

  1291. jailers

  1292. until he

  1293. should pay

  1294. all his

  1295. debt

  1296. so also

  1297. my heavenly

  1298. father

  1299. will do

  1300. to every

  1301. one of

  1302. you

  1303. if you

  1304. do

  1305. not

  1306. forgive

  1307. your

  1308. brother

  1309. from

  1310. your

  1311. heart

  1312. so

  1313. the grace

  1314. that we

  1315. have

  1316. received

  1317. should

  1318. it

  1319. necessarily

  1320. makes

  1321. us

  1322. gracious

  1323. having

  1324. been

  1325. saved

  1326. by the

  1327. grace

  1328. of

  1329. God

  1330. and

  1331. been

  1332. given

  1333. his

  1334. spirit

  1335. he

  1336. works

  1337. in

  1338. us

  1339. mercy

  1340. grace

  1341. the

  1342. mercy

  1343. of

  1344. God

  1345. toward

  1346. us

  1347. should

  1348. find

  1349. us

  1350. humble

  1351. and

  1352. forgiving

  1353. our

  1354. willingness

  1355. to

  1356. forgive

  1357. others

  1358. evidences

  1359. the

  1360. forgiveness

  1361. that we

  1362. have

  1363. received

  1364. Paul

  1365. writes

  1366. in

  1367. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:32

  1368. chapter

  1369. 4

  1370. verse

  1371. 32

  1372. be

  1373. kind

  1374. to

  1375. one

  1376. another

  1377. tender

  1378. hearted

  1379. forgiving

  1380. one

  1381. another

  1382. as

  1383. God

  1384. in

  1385. Christ

  1386. forgave

  1387. you

  1388. becomes

  1389. the

  1390. necessary

  1391. thing

  1392. that we

  1393. do

  1394. because

  1395. of the

  1396. great

  1397. forgiveness

  1398. that we

  1399. have

  1400. received

  1401. we

  1402. need

  1403. God's

  1404. forgiveness

  1405. and his

  1406. continued

  1407. grace

  1408. to be

  1409. forgiving

  1410. so we

  1411. should

  1412. pray

  1413. in this

  1414. way

  1415. I

  1416. also

  1417. think

  1418. that we

  1419. should

  1420. be

  1421. careful

  1422. in the

  1423. way we

  1424. approach

  1425. God

  1426. in our

  1427. prayers

  1428. we

  1429. should

  1430. be

  1431. careful

  1432. in the

  1433. way

  1434. that we

  1435. approach

  1436. God

  1437. in our

  1438. praying

  1439. as we

  1440. come to

  1441. him

  1442. to make

  1443. confession

  1444. too often

  1445. we come

  1446. to him

  1447. and we

  1448. haven't

  1449. gone and

  1450. forgiven

  1451. others

  1452. we

  1453. come to

  1454. him

  1455. entirely

  1456. unmerciful

  1457. asking

  1458. for

  1459. continued

  1460. mercy

  1461. ignoring

  1462. the fact

  1463. that he's

  1464. been so

  1465. gracious to

  1466. us

  1467. in

  1468. Christ

  1469. and

  1470. not

  1471. turning

  1472. that

  1473. out

  1474. in

  1475. graciousness

  1476. towards

  1477. others

  1478. we

  1479. come

  1480. to

  1481. him

  1482. pleading

  1483. more

  1484. grace

  1485. on

  1486. our

  1487. behalf

  1488. don't

  1489. forget

  1490. just a

  1491. chapter

  1492. ago

  1493. in

  1494. Matthew

    Matthew 5:23

  1495. chapter

  1496. 5

  1497. verse

  1498. 23

  1499. and

  1500. 24

  1501. Jesus

  1502. said

  1503. so if

  1504. you

  1505. were

  1506. offering

  1507. your

  1508. gift

  1509. at

  1510. the

  1511. altar

  1512. and

  1513. there

  1514. remember

  1515. that

  1516. your

  1517. brother

  1518. has

  1519. something

  1520. against

  1521. you

  1522. leave

  1523. your

  1524. gift

  1525. there

  1526. before

  1527. the

  1528. altar

  1529. and

  1530. go

  1531. first

  1532. be

  1533. reconciled

  1534. to

  1535. your

  1536. brother

  1537. and

  1538. then

  1539. come

  1540. and

  1541. offer

  1542. your

  1543. gift

  1544. so I

  1545. think

  1546. we

  1547. should

  1548. be

  1549. careful

  1550. about

  1551. the

  1552. way

  1553. that

  1554. we

  1555. come

  1556. and

  1557. ask

  1558. for

  1559. the

  1560. continuing

  1561. forgiveness

  1562. the

  1563. day

  1564. in

  1565. the

  1566. day

  1567. out

  1568. confession

  1569. of

  1570. our

  1571. sin

  1572. that

  1573. we're

  1574. careful

  1575. that

  1576. we're

  1577. not

  1578. harboring

  1579. bitterness

  1580. towards

  1581. others

  1582. as

  1583. we

  1584. do

  1585. that

  1586. very

  1587. thing

  1588. so

  1589. we

  1590. should

  1591. pray

  1592. like

  1593. Jesus

  1594. forgive

  1595. us

  1596. our

  1597. debts

  1598. deliver

  1599. us

  1600. from

  1601. evil

  1602. verse

  1603. 13

  1604. says

  1605. and

  1606. lead

  1607. us

  1608. not

  1609. into

  1610. temptation

  1611. but

  1612. deliver

  1613. us

  1614. from

  1615. evil

  1616. Jesus

  1617. tells

  1618. Peter

  1619. in

  1620. Matthew

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1621. chapter

  1622. 26

  1623. and

  1624. verse

  1625. 41

  1626. and

  1627. remember

  1628. this is

  1629. in the

  1630. garden

  1631. garden

  1632. of

  1633. Gethsemane

  1634. and

  1635. not

  1636. too

  1637. many

  1638. hours

  1639. before

  1640. this

  1641. at

  1642. the

  1643. last

  1644. supper

  1645. !

  1646. Peter

  1647. has

  1648. proclaimed

  1649. under

  1650. his own

  1651. power

  1652. that

  1653. he

  1654. would

  1655. never

  1656. deny

  1657. Jesus

  1658. right

  1659. self

  1660. sufficient

  1661. I

  1662. would

  1663. never

  1664. do

  1665. this

  1666. thing

  1667. and

  1668. then

  1669. Jesus

  1670. finds

  1671. him

  1672. sleeping

  1673. in

  1674. the

  1675. garden

  1676. and

  1677. he

  1678. says

  1679. watch

  1680. and

  1681. pray

  1682. that

  1683. you

  1684. may

  1685. not

  1686. enter

  1687. into

  1688. temptation

  1689. the

  1690. spirit

  1691. indeed

  1692. is

  1693. willing

  1694. but

  1695. the

  1696. flesh

  1697. is

  1698. weak

  1699. Sin

  1700. is

  1701. prowling

  1702. around

  1703. every

  1704. corner

  1705. and

  1706. we

  1707. should

  1708. not

  1709. think

  1710. too

  1711. much

  1712. of

  1713. ourselves

  1714. that

  1715. we

  1716. won't

  1717. fall

  1718. victim

  1719. to

  1720. the

  1721. very

  1722. most

  1723. egregious

  1724. of

  1725. sins

  1726. it

  1727. is

  1728. but

  1729. for

  1730. the

  1731. grace

  1732. of

  1733. God

  1734. that

  1735. we

  1736. are

  1737. not

  1738. the

  1739. absolute

  1740. continually

  1741. worst

  1742. of

  1743. sinners

  1744. and so

  1745. we need

  1746. to pray

  1747. that God

  1748. would

  1749. lead us

  1750. away

  1751. from

  1752. evil

  1753. and

  1754. toward

  1755. good

  1756. Jesus

  1757. prays this

  1758. for us

  1759. in what's

  1760. called

  1761. the high

  1762. priesthood

  1763. prayer

  1764. in John

    John 17:15

  1765. chapter

  1766. 17

  1767. verse

  1768. 15

  1769. where he

  1770. says

  1771. I do

  1772. not

  1773. ask

  1774. that you

  1775. take

  1776. them

  1777. out

  1778. of

  1779. the

  1780. world

  1781. but

  1782. that

  1783. you

  1784. keep

  1785. them

  1786. from

  1787. the evil

  1788. one

  1789. we

  1790. would

  1791. be

  1792. a

  1793. people

  1794. growing

  1795. in

  1796. holiness

  1797. for

  1798. the

  1799. praise

  1800. of

  1801. our

  1802. God

  1803. and

  1804. our

  1805. heavenly

  1806. father

  1807. is

  1808. pleased

  1809. to

  1810. do

  1811. this

  1812. he

  1813. seeks

  1814. the

  1815. good

  1816. of

  1817. his

  1818. people

  1819. for

  1820. the

  1821. glory

  1822. of

  1823. his

  1824. name

  1825. !

  1826. Paul

  1827. writes

  1828. in

  1829. Corinthians

  1830. chapter

  1831. 10

  1832. verse

  1833. 13

  1834. no

  1835. temptation

  1836. has

  1837. overtaken

  1838. you

  1839. that

  1840. is

  1841. not

  1842. common

  1843. to

  1844. man

  1845. right

  1846. you

  1847. do

  1848. not

  1849. ever

  1850. find

  1851. yourself

  1852. in

  1853. the

  1854. middle

  1855. of

  1856. a

  1857. temptation

  1858. that

  1859. no

  1860. one

  1861. else

  1862. has

  1863. ever

  1864. experienced

  1865. there's

  1866. never

  1867. a

  1868. unique

  1869. temptation

  1870. to

  1871. you

  1872. right

  1873. you

  1874. have

  1875. no

  1876. excuse

  1877. to

  1878. say

  1879. well

  1880. yeah

  1881. God's

  1882. been

  1883. gracious

  1884. in

  1885. other

  1886. circumstances

  1887. but

  1888. he

  1889. doesn't

  1890. understand

  1891. this

  1892. circumstance

  1893. it's

  1894. common

  1895. we

  1896. are

  1897. all

  1898. experiencing

  1899. temptation

  1900. right

  1901. common

  1902. to

  1903. man

  1904. but

  1905. 13

  1906. goes

  1907. on

  1908. God

  1909. is

  1910. faithful

  1911. God

  1912. is

  1913. faithful

  1914. despite

  1915. our

  1916. unfaithfulness

  1917. despite

  1918. how often

  1919. we are

  1920. given

  1921. to

  1922. temptation

  1923. and

  1924. give

  1925. in

  1926. to

  1927. temptation

  1928. God

  1929. is

  1930. faithful

  1931. and

  1932. he

  1933. will

  1934. not

  1935. let

  1936. you

  1937. be

  1938. tempted

  1939. beyond

  1940. your

  1941. ability

  1942. his

  1943. working

  1944. in

  1945. you

  1946. ability

  1947. but

  1948. with

  1949. the

  1950. temptation

  1951. he

  1952. will

  1953. also

  1954. provide

  1955. the

  1956. way

  1957. of

  1958. escape

  1959. that

  1960. you

  1961. may

  1962. be

  1963. able

  1964. to

  1965. endure

  1966. it

  1967. and

  1968. so

  1969. Paul

  1970. tells

  1971. us

  1972. that

  1973. we

  1974. can

  1975. confidently

  1976. pray

  1977. confidently

  1978. pray

  1979. that

  1980. God

  1981. would

  1982. do

  1983. this

  1984. on

  1985. our

  1986. behalf

  1987. because

  1988. God

  1989. is

  1990. faithful

  1991. right

  1992. the

  1993. temptation

  1994. you're

  1995. experiencing

  1996. is

  1997. not

  1998. unique

  1999. to

  2000. you

  2001. pray

  2002. that

  2003. God

  2004. would

  2005. deliver

  2006. you

  2007. from

  2008. it

  2009. and

  2010. act

  2011. and

  2012. move

  2013. with

  2014. the

  2015. very

  2016. impulse

  2017. that

  2018. he

  2019. provides

  2020. that

  2021. you

  2022. would

  2023. be

  2024. delivered

  2025. from

  2026. that

  2027. evil

  2028. to

  2029. the

  2030. praise

  2031. of

  2032. his

  2033. glorious

  2034. name

  2035. as

  2036. God's

  2037. people

  2038. we

  2039. are

  2040. meant

  2041. to

  2042. be

  2043. set

  2044. apart

  2045. as

  2046. unique

  2047. in

  2048. the

  2049. world

  2050. right

  2051. we're

  2052. supposed

  2053. to

  2054. look

  2055. different

  2056. we're

  2057. supposed

  2058. to be

  2059. haters

  2060. of

  2061. sin

  2062. and

  2063. lovers

  2064. of

  2065. good

  2066. we're

  2067. supposed

  2068. to be

  2069. pursuing

  2070. righteousness

  2071. with

  2072. all

  2073. that

  2074. we

  2075. are

  2076. and

  2077. it's

  2078. in

  2079. doing

  2080. this

  2081. that

  2082. we

  2083. become

  2084. the

  2085. aroma

  2086. of

  2087. Christ

  2088. right

  2089. for

  2090. some

  2091. that's

  2092. the

  2093. aroma

  2094. of

  2095. death

  2096. for

  2097. others

  2098. that's

  2099. the

  2100. aroma

  2101. of

  2102. life

  2103. oh

  2104. and

  2105. we

  2106. want

  2107. people

  2108. to

  2109. come

  2110. to

  2111. life

  2112. in

  2113. Christ

  2114. as

  2115. they

  2116. smell

  2117. our

  2118. lives

  2119. right

  2120. as

  2121. they're

  2122. witnesses

  2123. !

  2124. to

  2125. us

  2126. who

  2127. walk

  2128. in

  2129. the

  2130. light

  2131. and

  2132. not

  2133. in

  2134. darkness

  2135. and

  2136. so

  2137. we

  2138. should

  2139. pray

  2140. like

  2141. Jesus

  2142. deliver

  2143. us

  2144. from

  2145. evil

  2146. one

  2147. final

  2148. observation

  2149. we

  2150. have

  2151. noted

  2152. that

  2153. the

  2154. prayers

  2155. of

  2156. God's

  2157. children

  2158. begin

  2159. with

  2160. our

  2161. father

  2162. I

  2163. believe

  2164. that

  2165. the

  2166. meaning

  2167. of

  2168. the

  2169. use

  2170. of

  2171. the

  2172. plural

  2173. pronoun

  2174. our

  2175. is

  2176. layered

  2177. certainly

  2178. in our

  2179. corporate

  2180. prayers

  2181. it is

  2182. proper

  2183. for the

  2184. one

  2185. who

  2186. is

  2187. leading

  2188. the

  2189. prayer

  2190. to

  2191. pray

  2192. for

  2193. us

  2194. on

  2195. our

  2196. behalf

  2197. even

  2198. as

  2199. we

  2200. join

  2201. in

  2202. the

  2203. prayer

  2204. too

  2205. often

  2206. we

  2207. sit

  2208. idly

  2209. by

  2210. while

  2211. the

  2212. person

  2213. prays

  2214. maybe

  2215. processing

  2216. a bit

  2217. of

  2218. what's

  2219. being

  2220. said

  2221. we

  2222. need

  2223. to

  2224. recognize

  2225. that

  2226. when

  2227. somebody

  2228. leads

  2229. us

  2230. they're

  2231. leading

  2232. us

  2233. in

  2234. prayer

  2235. we

  2236. are

  2237. joining

  2238. together

  2239. in

  2240. that

  2241. prayer

  2242. that's

  2243. the

  2244. reason

  2245. that

  2246. the

  2247. church

  2248. utters

  2249. amens

  2250. we're

  2251. saying

  2252. let

  2253. it

  2254. be

  2255. we're

  2256. agreeing

  2257. with

  2258. the

  2259. thing

  2260. that's

  2261. been

  2262. prayed

  2263. the

  2264. closing

  2265. of

  2266. a

  2267. prayer

  2268. if

  2269. you

  2270. agree

  2271. with

  2272. the

  2273. things

  2274. that

  2275. were

  2276. prayed

  2277. sometimes

  2278. we

  2279. wonder

  2280. when

  2281. we

  2282. lead

  2283. public

  2284. prayers

  2285. we go

  2286. I hope

  2287. everybody

  2288. heard

  2289. and

  2290. was

  2291. on

  2292. board

  2293. with

  2294. what

  2295. we

  2296. prayed

  2297. so

  2298. it's

  2299. part

  2300. of

  2301. that

  2302. right

  2303. there's

  2304. a

  2305. layer

  2306. to

  2307. it

  2308. there's

  2309. a

  2310. corporate

  2311. praying

  2312. component

  2313. but

  2314. I

  2315. also

  2316. think

  2317. there

  2318. is

  2319. a

  2320. further

  2321. meaning

  2322. Jesus

  2323. has

  2324. just

  2325. instructed

  2326. times

  2327. of

  2328. secret

  2329. prayer

  2330. at

  2331. the

  2332. beginning

  2333. of

  2334. chapter

  2335. 6

  2336. talked

  2337. about

  2338. going

  2339. into

  2340. a

  2341. place

  2342. that's

  2343. secret

  2344. and

  2345. praying

  2346. to

  2347. a

  2348. God

  2349. in

  2350. secret

  2351. that

  2352. God

  2353. would

  2354. reward

  2355. so

  2356. I

  2357. would

  2358. suggest

  2359. to

  2360. you

  2361. that

  2362. even

  2363. in

  2364. your

  2365. private

  2366. praying

  2367. you

  2368. should

  2369. pray

  2370. our

  2371. father

  2372. and

  2373. that

  2374. Jesus

  2375. intends

  2376. that

  2377. we

  2378. not

  2379. forget

  2380. even

  2381. in

  2382. our

  2383. moments

  2384. of

  2385. solitude

  2386. that

  2387. God

  2388. has

  2389. saved

  2390. a

  2391. people

  2392. and

  2393. that

  2394. we

  2395. pray

  2396. and

  2397. we

  2398. act

  2399. for

  2400. his

  2401. people

  2402. we

  2403. have

  2404. relationships

  2405. with

  2406. Jesus

  2407. Christ

  2408. I

  2409. am

  2410. a

  2411. son

  2412. of

  2413. God

  2414. that

  2415. is

  2416. an

  2417. important

  2418. thing

  2419. to

  2420. understand

  2421. but

  2422. maybe

  2423. more

  2424. important

  2425. is

  2426. to

  2427. understand

  2428. I'm

  2429. part

  2430. of

  2431. a

  2432. family

  2433. of

  2434. God

  2435. I'm

  2436. part

  2437. of

  2438. a

  2439. family

  2440. of

  2441. Christ

  2442. right

  2443. and

  2444. to

  2445. pray

  2446. on

  2447. behalf

  2448. of

  2449. others

  2450. is

  2451. very

  2452. important

  2453. notice

  2454. that

  2455. the

  2456. plural

  2457. pronouns

  2458. have

  2459. not

  2460. let

  2461. up

  2462. in

  2463. these

  2464. final

  2465. three

  2466. petitions

  2467. and

  2468. Jesus

  2469. doesn't

  2470. do

  2471. this

  2472. because

  2473. he

  2474. said

  2475. our

  2476. father

  2477. and

  2478. he

  2479. goes

  2480. oh

  2481. man

  2482. now

  2483. I

  2484. got

  2485. to

  2486. use

  2487. plural

  2488. pronouns

  2489. the

  2490. rest

  2491. of

  2492. the

  2493. time

  2494. not

  2495. at

  2496. all

  2497. what's

  2498. happening

  2499. here

  2500. he's

  2501. trying

  2502. to

  2503. teach

  2504. us

  2505. something

  2506. he

  2507. says

  2508. give

  2509. us

  2510. this

  2511. day

  2512. our

  2513. daily

  2514. bread

  2515. forgive

  2516. us

  2517. our

  2518. debts

  2519. deliver

  2520. us

  2521. from

  2522. evil

  2523. so

  2524. we

  2525. should

  2526. be

  2527. about

  2528. praying

  2529. pleading

  2530. the

  2531. cause

  2532. of

  2533. others

  2534. this

  2535. is

  2536. called

  2537. intercessory

  2538. prayer

  2539. do you

  2540. pray

  2541. in that

  2542. way

  2543. most

  2544. of your

  2545. prayers

  2546. aimed

  2547. at the

  2548. glory

  2549. of God

  2550. and at

  2551. others

  2552. or

  2553. at

  2554. yourself

  2555. so in

  2556. conclusion

  2557. our

  2558. prayers

  2559. should be

  2560. aimed

  2561. at the

  2562. glory

  2563. of God

  2564. that

  2565. his

  2566. fame

  2567. would

  2568. be

  2569. known

  2570. that

  2571. his

  2572. kingdom

  2573. would

  2574. come

  2575. that

  2576. his

  2577. will

  2578. would

  2579. be

  2580. done

  2581. our

  2582. prayers

  2583. should

  2584. have

  2585. our

  2586. good

  2587. in

  2588. mind

  2589. we

  2590. certainly

  2591. want

  2592. to

  2593. pray

  2594. things

  2595. on

  2596. our

  2597. behalf

  2598. and

  2599. God

  2600. cares

  2601. about

  2602. the

  2603. nuances

  2604. of

  2605. our

  2606. day

  2607. but

  2608. also

  2609. our

  2610. prayer

  2611. should

  2612. be

  2613. aimed

  2614. !

  2615. at

  2616. the

  2617. good

  2618. of

  2619. others

  2620. we

  2621. should

  2622. pray

  2623. like

  2624. Jesus

  2625. our

  2626. father

  2627. in

  2628. heaven

  2629. hallowed

  2630. be

  2631. your

  2632. name

  2633. your

  2634. kingdom

  2635. come

  2636. your

  2637. will

  2638. be

  2639. done

  2640. on

  2641. earth

  2642. as

  2643. is

  2644. in

  2645. heaven

  2646. give

  2647. us

  2648. this

  2649. day

  2650. our

  2651. daily

  2652. bread

  2653. and

  2654. forgive

  2655. us

  2656. our

  2657. debts

  2658. as

  2659. we

  2660. also

  2661. have

  2662. forgiven

  2663. our

  2664. debtors

  2665. and

  2666. lead

  2667. us

  2668. not

  2669. into

  2670. temptation

  2671. but

  2672. deliver

  2673. us

  2674. from

  2675. evil

  2676. I

  2677. hope

  2678. that

  2679. our

  2680. time

  2681. in

  2682. this

  2683. part

  2684. of

  2685. the

  2686. text

  2687. We're

  2688. going

  2689. to

  2690. move

  2691. on

  2692. to

  2693. some

  2694. wonderful

  2695. text

  2696. in

  2697. the

  2698. coming

  2699. weeks

  2700. and

  2701. finish

  2702. the

  2703. sermon

  2704. on

  2705. the

  2706. mount

  2707. before

  2708. advent

  2709. season

  2710. begins

  2711. I

  2712. hope

  2713. that

  2714. you'll

  2715. take

  2716. time

  2717. to

  2718. really

  2719. consider

  2720. what

  2721. a

  2722. praying

  2723. life

  2724. looks

  2725. like

  2726. and

  2727. if

  2728. you

  2729. don't

  2730. find

  2731. yourself

  2732. praying

  2733. what

  2734. it

  2735. says

  2736. about

  2737. you

  2738. and

  2739. what

  2740. you

  2741. believe

  2742. about

  2743. our

  2744. God
