  1. Remember that Jesus is not speaking in chapter 7 to the ear religious.

  2. ! He is speaking to those who think that they are part of the kingdom of heaven, but are not citizens thereof.

  3. He is warning those in my hearing today to not be deceived by others and in today's text to not deceive themselves.

  4. He is warning us to escape final judgment.

  5. By placing saving faith in his person and in his work.

  6. He is exhorting us to find our righteousness in him and in him alone.

  7. The one and the only one who can grant us perfect righteousness.

  8. He has said in Matthew chapter 5 and verse 20,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  9. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, those perceived to be the most righteous, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  10. And then later in chapter 5, verse 48, he says,

  11. You therefore must be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

  12. So how are we to have this exceeding righteousness?

  13. How are we to be perfect?

  14. Jesus does not leave us without the answer to those most pressing of questions.

  15. So join me this morning as we look at our text as he continues to unfold that answer.

  16. Matthew chapter 7, verse 21 through 29.

    Matthew 7:21–29

  17. Beloved, this is God's word to us.

  18. It was written for his glory and our good.

  19. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  20. Jesus says,

  21. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

  22. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock.

  23. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.

  24. And the rain fell and the rain fell and the winds blew and beat against that house and it fell and great was the fall of it.

  25. And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching for he was teaching them as one who had authority and not as their scribes.

  26. I want to begin our study today by considering the builders of verses 24 through 27.

  27. As Jesus is employing them as an analogy for what he has been teaching from verse 13 and down through verse 23.

  28. Let's begin by looking at their similarities.

  29. How are these two builders the same?

  30. And then we will better be able to look at their differences together.

  31. So first there similarities.

  32. Jesus says in both verse 24 and in verse 26, everyone who hears these words of mine.

  33. So both builders hear these words.

  34. Jesus is certainly referring to the words that he has just spoken.

  35. Those words that we have been studying for the past so many months.

  36. But I also believe that we should understand this more broadly.

  37. Jesus is speaking of the whole of the word of God.

  38. This full, declarative, redemptive work that God has given to us in the scripture.

  39. Jesus said in Matthew chapter 5, verse 17 through 19.

    Matthew 5:17–19

  40. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.

  41. This was a common way to speak of the Jewish Bible, our Old Testament.

  42. He says, I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  43. And then he goes on to say in verse 19.

  44. Therefore, whoever relaxes on one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same.

  45. Will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.

  46. But whoever does them and teaches them will be called great.

  47. In the kingdom of heaven.

  48. So Jesus is not the abolisher, but the fulfiller of words that should be taught and obeyed.

  49. Before Jesus is crucified, he promises that he will send the Holy Spirit to teach you all things.

  50. And bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  51. That's John chapter 14, verse 26.

    John 14:26

  52. And then upon his resurrection, he commands his disciples to make disciples of all nations,

  53. teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

  54. Matthew 28 and verse 20.

  55. We believe that we have that teaching in our New Testament.

  56. So we have the Old Testament commended to us to be taught and obeyed.

  57. And we have the New Testament commended to us to be taught and obeyed.

  58. The Apostle Paul states in Romans chapter 10 and verse 17.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  59. So faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

  60. So we are to be hearers and doers of the word of Christ.

  61. Both of the Sermon on the Mount and the broader context as well.

  62. Both men, both builders in today's text are hearers of the word of Christ.

  63. They are also both men who build houses.

  64. These are figurative houses, not literal houses.

  65. We see that also in verse 24 and in verse 26.

  66. We should understand these houses to be lives, specifically religious lives.

  67. These are houses built in response to hearing the words of Christ.

  68. Both houses are built to stand.

  69. We get no inclination in the text at all that one house was built to stand and one house was built by design to not stand.

  70. Both houses are built to stand.

  71. Both builders have confidence that their houses will stand.

  72. But one man's confidence is in the Lord and the other man's confidence is in himself.

  73. So both men hear the words of Christ.

  74. Both men build houses based on the words of Christ.

  75. And Jesus' exclusion of other details should lead us to understand that both houses are built in the same location.

  76. They certainly both experience the same storm with the same materials.

  77. We have no reason to think that the circumstances of these men's lives are any different.

  78. That is to say, right?

  79. They're just examples of two ways.

  80. Narrow, difficult path and broad, easy way.

  81. We're meant to understand that the great difference between these two men is what happens when the storm comes.

  82. John wrote of his vision in Revelation chapter 20, verse 12 and verse 15 of the final judgment.

    Revelation 20:12

  83. This is the storm here that Jesus is referring to.

  84. I have heard verses 24 through 27 preached way too many times about standing against the storms of life.

  85. That is not what this text is about.

  86. The scripture has much to say about such things.

  87. Many wonderful places we can go to find peace and comfort and tools to pick up to stand the storms of life.

  88. That is not what this text is about.

  89. This is about final judgment.

  90. This is about previously in our text.

  91. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my father on that day.

  92. This is an eschatological text.

  93. This is referring to that final day of judgment.

  94. What religious house will stand and what religious house will be demolished?

  95. That's the weight of the text that's before us.

  96. Today.

  97. So Revelation chapter 20, verse 12 and then verse 15.

    Revelation 20:12

  98. John wrote of his vision.

  99. This is the judgment that Jesus is talking about in our text.

  100. This is the judgment that Jesus is talking about in our text today.

  101. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life.

  102. He was thrown into the lake of fire.

  103. This is the judgment that Jesus is talking about in our text today.

  104. And so this is a storm that we will all experience.

  105. Will your house stand on that great day of judgment?

  106. And to help you think about in our text today.

  107. And to help you think about that this morning, we should consider the differences between these two builders.

  108. First, one builder is declared wise in verse 24.

  109. He has wisdom.

  110. And the other declared foolish in verse 26.

  111. On the criteria that the wise man hears these words of mine, these words of Christ, and does them.

  112. And the foolish man hears these words of mine, and does not do them.

  113. So Jesus declares wise the hearer and doer of his word.

  114. And foolish the mere hearer of his word.

  115. James borrows language from Jesus in James chapter 1 verses 22 and following.

    James 1:22

  116. Where he wrote,

  117. But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

  118. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,

  119. he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.

  120. For he looks at himself and goes away at once, forgets what he looks like.

  121. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres,

  122. being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

  123. You see, beloved, what we do proceeds from who we are.

  124. James is saying that if you are one who perseveres to the end and stands in the judgment,

  125. you are a disciple of Jesus Christ and a disciple of Jesus Christ hears the words of Christ and does them.

  126. Peter wrote in 2 Peter chapter 1 verse 5 and following.

    2 Peter 1:5

  127. Make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue and virtue with knowledge and knowledge with self-control and self-control with steadfastness and steadfastness with godliness.

  128. And godliness with brotherly affection and brotherly affection with love.

  129. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  130. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

  131. And then verse 10.

  132. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.

  133. For if you practice these qualities, you will never fall.

  134. If you find yourself doubting your salvation or find a brother or sister doubting their salvation,

  135. do not say to them,

  136. tell me about the day you walked the aisle.

  137. Open the front of your Bible and look at the date that you wrote down when you made a profession of faith in Christ.

  138. The scripture doesn't do this and neither should we.

  139. We should say, hey, turn with me to 2 Peter chapter 1 verses 5 through 10.

    2 Peter 1:5–10

  140. And let's consider your life.

  141. Let's stop and think.

  142. Are these qualities yours and increasing or are they not?

  143. Other texts do this well for us also.

  144. The whole book of 1 John serves us in this way.

  145. Peter in 2 Peter chapter 1 is in essence saying that you show yourself to be one who perseveres,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  146. one who is called and elect by doing the word of Christ.

  147. Now, I am not, nor will I ever suggest that we are saved by our works.

  148. That is not what James or Peter are suggesting.

  149. And neither is our Lord in his Sermon on the Mount.

  150. But it is not just the doer of the word of Christ,

  151. but the doer of the word of Christ who is in Christ who is saved.

  152. We throw ourselves on his righteousness.

  153. Our status is changed.

  154. This is the great doctrine of regeneration.

  155. We become new creations.

  156. And out of our new selves, we act.

  157. How do we know if we have a new self?

  158. We measure how it is that we act.

  159. Am I a doer of the word of Christ,

  160. taking full confidence not in my doing,

  161. but in his work on my behalf?

  162. Take a look up the text a bit.

  163. Matthew chapter 7 at verse 22.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  164. On that day, many will say to me,

  165. Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name

  166. and cast out demons in your name

  167. and do many mighty works in your name?

  168. Jesus does not condemn these particular declarations

  169. of good works.

  170. It's difficult for us to know

  171. by what power these men did these things.

  172. There are some clear examples in the Scripture

  173. of people doing works that appeared to be works of God

  174. but were done by the hand of Satan in their lives.

  175. I think this still exists in our day.

  176. People do miraculous things.

  177. They do it in the name of God,

  178. but they're really doing it under a different power altogether.

  179. There are many who, under their own power,

  180. just do outwardly good-looking things.

  181. We don't know exactly what's going on here,

  182. but Jesus does not say,

  183. those are not the good works that I required of you.

  184. He doesn't condemn those particular good works.

  185. So we can gather that the works mentioned

  186. are in fact works of obedience.

  187. What does Jesus tell us He will say

  188. in that future day in verse 23?

  189. What will be the condition of their acceptance

  190. into His kingdom?

  191. The works?

  192. He says,

  193. And then I will declare to them,

  194. I never knew you.

  195. Depart from me,

  196. you workers of lawlessness.

  197. So they did works,

  198. but they didn't do works in Christ.

  199. They weren't in Him.

  200. He never knew them.

  201. The foolish man builds a house

  202. that he believes will stand in the last day,

  203. but it will not

  204. because the foolish man is not known by Jesus Christ.

  205. This is the man who built his house on the sand,

  206. the shifting sand of his works.

  207. We must be so very careful at this point.

  208. Jesus is teaching that it is altogether possible

  209. to appear to be following Christ

  210. with our actions.

  211. You can have every confidence

  212. that you are in Christ because of your works,

  213. but this can be a self-confidence,

  214. a self-righteousness.

  215. You can also declare all of the right theology

  216. and not be in Christ.

  217. Verse 21,

  218. Jesus says,

  219. Not everyone who says to me,

  220. Lord, Lord,

  221. will enter the kingdom of heaven.

  222. This is a statement of careful theological accuracy.

  223. It was common in Jesus' day

  224. to call someone Lord

  225. as a matter of respect or of honor.

  226. Your boss may have been called Lord.

  227. The governor may have been called Lord.

  228. Military generals would have been called Lord.

  229. But to call Jesus Lord, Lord

  230. suggests much more than mere human respect.

  231. It suggests that it is altogether possible

  232. to mentally ascend to the divinity of Jesus Christ

  233. and to not place saving faith in Him.

  234. More broadly, it means that we can have this book

  235. so figured out,

  236. just like the Pharisees who searched it diligently

  237. but failed to come to Christ.

  238. This book is a precious book.

  239. If you've been here long at all,

  240. you know how much I love the Scripture.

  241. But this is a book that points us to our Creator.

  242. We know God and we know Christ through this book.

  243. And we can so fail to know the book

  244. and not know the author of it.

  245. There's a difference between knowing God

  246. and really knowing about Him.

  247. As a church who is in a tradition

  248. that loves study and we should,

  249. cares deeply about theology as we should,

  250. wants to make sure things are just so-so as we should,

  251. we have to be very careful

  252. that we don't think that knowing things

  253. makes us righteous before God.

  254. It's knowing Christ and being known by Him

  255. that approves us before God.

  256. In Matthew chapter 13, verse 24 through 30,

    Matthew 13:24–30

  257. Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the tares,

  258. which should be absolutely jarring to us.

  259. And I want you to turn there with me.

  260. Matthew chapter 13, just a few pages.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  261. This parable, I think, stands beside the parable of the soils.

  262. So the parable of the soils,

  263. we see there's four different soils

  264. and we're sowing, the word is being sown

  265. and it gets accepted in various ways,

  266. ways that we can observe now.

  267. But this is the one that stands eschatologically next to it.

  268. Well, what about the end?

  269. That's what Jesus says.

  270. The kingdom of heaven may be compared

  271. to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

  272. But while his men were sleeping,

  273. his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat

  274. and went away.

  275. So when the plants came up and bore grain,

  276. then the weeds appeared also.

  277. And the servants of the master of the house

  278. came and said to him,

  279. Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?

  280. How then does it have weeds?

  281. He said to them,

  282. An enemy has done this.

  283. So the servant said to him,

  284. Then do you want us to go and gather them?

  285. But he said,

  286. No, less than gathering the weeds,

  287. you root up the wheat along with them.

  288. Let both grow together until the harvest.

  289. And at harvest time,

  290. I will tell the reapers,

  291. Gather the weeds first

  292. and bind them in bundles to be burned,

  293. but gather the wheat into my barn.

  294. There was a common weed of the day called a tare.

  295. And it looked exactly like wheat

  296. until it was time for the wheat to bear fruit.

  297. Until it went to grain.

  298. And the tares did not go to grain in the same way.

  299. And so it is very possible what Jesus is saying

  300. is that we can look around

  301. and we can all look the same.

  302. Good seed sowed in good soil.

  303. And yet amongst us,

  304. There are people who are confident in what they know

  305. and in what they do

  306. who are not in Christ.

  307. Will not bear the fruit of righteousness.

  308. Isn't that jarring?

  309. It is to me.

  310. And it should cause us to put our hands

  311. to the labor of discipleship.

  312. Helping each other follow Christ.

  313. Helping each other be confident

  314. of our calling and election.

  315. Growing up in righteousness.

  316. Right?

  317. Lest at the end

  318. we be shown to be a tare.

  319. A weed that is gathered

  320. and thrown into the fire.

  321. We can be theologically astute

  322. and zealous for good works

  323. and have Jesus declare to us

  324. on the final day of judgment,

  325. I never knew you.

  326. Depart from me,

  327. you workers of lawlessness.

  328. Unless the foundation of our lives

  329. is built on the rock.

  330. What is this rock?

  331. It's Jesus Himself.

  332. His person and His completed work.

  333. Just as Peter declares that,

  334. just after, excuse me,

  335. Jesus declares that Jesus is the Christ.

  336. In Matthew 16, verse 18,

    Matthew 16:18

  337. Jesus says,

  338. And I tell you,

  339. you are Peter,

  340. and on this rock

  341. I will build my church,

  342. and the gates of hell

  343. shall not prevail against it.

  344. Right?

  345. I want to think,

  346. although it probably didn't happen

  347. for them at this time,

  348. but I want to think

  349. that the disciples' brains

  350. just exploded

  351. because they connected back

  352. to the Sermon on the Mount.

  353. The rock!

  354. And they went,

  355. listen to Him,

  356. His metaphors are consistent,

  357. it's fantastic.

  358. Jesus is the rock

  359. on which our lives

  360. must be built

  361. if we're to stand

  362. in final judgment.

  363. In Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  364. Jesus is the narrow gate

  365. that must be found

  366. and entered,

  367. and He is the rock

  368. on which our houses

  369. must be built

  370. if we are to stand.

  371. The surface of the land

  372. of Jesus' home

  373. was largely,

  374. and still is,

  375. sand,

  376. and the substrate,

  377. the underlayer,

  378. of the land of Jesus' home,

  379. still is,

  380. was largely sand.

  381. So in order to build

  382. a solid home,

  383. builders of His day

  384. would have to dig down

  385. through the sand

  386. to find the bedrock.

  387. They would have to go

  388. and search for it

  389. and do this work

  390. of clearing out

  391. the shifting land

  392. to find the solid land

  393. on which to build.

  394. It is with this reality

  395. in mind

  396. that Jesus says

  397. the wise man

  398. built his house

  399. on the rock.

  400. They understand

  401. this analogy.

  402. If you've built a house

  403. or you're building a house,

  404. we know

  405. that we have to build

  406. our foundations

  407. below the frost line.

  408. Otherwise,

  409. our foundations

  410. will crack.

  411. If you haven't,

  412. you have no idea

  413. what I'm talking about.

  414. In Georgia,

  415. it's not very deep.

  416. Our foundations

  417. don't go very deep

  418. in Georgia

  419. because the frost

  420. doesn't go very deep

  421. in Georgia.

  422. In other places,

  423. boy,

  424. do you have to

  425. dig a foundation

  426. to make sure

  427. your house's foundation

  428. doesn't crack.

  429. So it's into this context

  430. that Jesus is speaking.

  431. They all know exactly

  432. what he's talking about.

  433. How a house

  434. on the rock

  435. is stable

  436. and a house

  437. on the sand

  438. is not.

  439. Jesus

  440. is the rock.

  441. We cannot build

  442. religious lives

  443. with any measure

  444. of self-confidence,

  445. any measure

  446. of self-confidence,

  447. but rather

  448. with confidence

  449. in Jesus.

  450. It is with a confidence

  451. in his completed work

  452. that we work

  453. and evidence

  454. our confidence.

  455. It's because of

  456. who he makes us

  457. that we work.

  458. Spurgeon once said,

  459. faith and works

  460. are bound up

  461. in the same bundle.

  462. He that obeys God

  463. trusts God

  464. and he that trusts God

  465. obeys God.

  466. He that is without faith

  467. is without works

  468. and he that is without works

  469. is without faith.

  470. And Jesus says

  471. in John chapter 14

    John 14:15

  472. verse 15,

  473. if you love me,

  474. you will keep

  475. my commandments.

  476. So there is a wise builder

  477. and a foolish builder.

  478. Both experienced

  479. the same storm

  480. in the final judgment.

  481. And how did they fare

  482. in that storm?

  483. The wise man's house

  484. did not fall

  485. because it had been

  486. founded on the rock.

  487. Verse 25.

  488. The foolish man's house

  489. fell

  490. and great

  491. was the fall of it.

  492. We are builders,

  493. all of us.

  494. Will your house

  495. stand in the judgment

  496. or will it experience

  497. a great fall?

  498. Not many preachers

  499. these days

  500. like to speak

  501. of judgment.

  502. It's a most unpleasant thing,

  503. isn't it,

  504. to talk about

  505. the eternal state

  506. of souls

  507. who aren't found

  508. in Jesus Christ.

  509. I suggest

  510. that that's happening

  511. so prevalently

  512. in our day

  513. because

  514. they are far too

  515. concerned with

  516. pleasing their listeners

  517. and want people

  518. to come

  519. and feel good

  520. about coming

  521. to church.

  522. And as

  523. Thomas Watson,

  524. a Puritan preacher,

  525. said,

  526. this is on your bulletin,

  527. guilty men

  528. do not love

  529. to hear

  530. of the day

  531. of judgment.

  532. Which would be

  533. to suggest

  534. that those

  535. who are found

  536. in Christ

  537. do.

  538. That final day

  539. where we will be

  540. given to the kingdom

  541. of God

  542. in our entirety.

  543. But I have to tell you,

  544. church,

  545. my concern this morning

  546. is not that you

  547. be pleased with me.

  548. I don't really care

  549. if it means

  550. that your soul

  551. is headed

  552. towards destruction.

  553. If your soul

  554. be not saved,

  555. why does it matter

  556. if you like me?

  557. I want you instead

  558. this morning

  559. to have an unshakable

  560. confidence

  561. that your house

  562. is built

  563. upon the rock

  564. because that final

  565. storm is

  566. coming.

  567. The scripture

  568. promises it

  569. to us.

  570. The writer of Hebrews

  571. says in Hebrews 9

  572. and verse 27,

  573. it is appointed

  574. for man

  575. to die

  576. once

  577. and after

  578. that

  579. comes

  580. judgment.

  581. This is a sure

  582. thing.

  583. If you are not

  584. found in Christ

  585. on that day

  586. of judgment,

  587. it is a very

  588. frightful

  589. thing.

  590. You ought to

  591. tremble

  592. at the idea

  593. that there will be

  594. a final judgment

  595. for you

  596. and that you

  597. could be

  598. separated from God

  599. forever.

  600. Jesus said

  601. in Luke 13

    Luke 13:28

  602. verse 28

  603. that the place

  604. those cast

  605. from the Lord's

  606. presence

  607. will be full

  608. of weeping

  609. and the gnashing

  610. of teeth.

  611. It is a lake

  612. of fire,

  613. a place

  614. of torment

  615. for those

  616. who are enemies

  617. of our most

  618. holy God.

  619. Flee

  620. from the wrath

  621. of God

  622. to God

  623. in Christ.

  624. Place your faith

  625. in Jesus.

  626. the same

  627. way,

  628. I think

  629. that Ray

  630. Comfort

  631. uses this

  632. analogy a lot,

  633. the same

  634. way that

  635. a parachuter,

  636. a parachutist,

  637. I think is the

  638. right term,

  639. trusts in a

  640. parachute.

  641. The other

  642. day I

  643. flew a

  644. pretend plane

  645. in our living

  646. room and

  647. had my boys

  648. putting on

  649. backpacks and

  650. jumping off

  651. the couch

  652. to talk about

  653. what it means

  654. to believe

  655. in Jesus.

  656. To trust

  657. that He

  658. will catch

  659. you at the

  660. end.

  661. That you

  662. will be found

  663. in Him

  664. and His

  665. righteousness

  666. will be

  667. yours.

  668. And the

  669. penalty for

  670. your sin

  671. was paid

  672. by Him

  673. on the

  674. cross

  675. to believe

  676. in that

  677. way that

  678. you would

  679. toss yourself

  680. out of

  681. the plane.

  682. Flee

  683. from the

  684. wrath of

  685. God

  686. to God

  687. in Christ.

  688. Enter by

  689. the narrow

  690. gate.

  691. Do not

  692. be deceived

  693. by others

  694. or deceive

  695. yourselves.

  696. It is

  697. confident

  698. faith

  699. in the

  700. person and

  701. work of

  702. Christ.

  703. evidenced

  704. by

  705. obedience

  706. that will

  707. see us

  708. through the

  709. judgment

  710. of God

  711. and into

  712. His

  713. blessed

  714. presence

  715. forever.

  716. Matthew

  717. concludes

  718. his record

  719. of Jesus'

  720. sermon

  721. by writing,

  722. And when

  723. Jesus finished

  724. these sayings,

  725. the crowds

  726. were astonished

  727. at His

  728. teaching,

  729. for He

  730. is teaching

  731. them as

  732. one who

  733. had authority

  734. and not

  735. as their

  736. scribes.

  737. They were

  738. amazed.

  739. They were

  740. dumbfounded.

  741. This was a

  742. big teaching

  743. that they

  744. had heard.

  745. No one

  746. had spoken

  747. such strong

  748. declarations

  749. about the

  750. kingdom of

  751. God as

  752. Jesus had.

  753. No one

  754. had corrected

  755. the common

  756. misunderstandings

  757. of the law

  758. as Jesus

  759. had.

  760. No one

  761. had placed

  762. such high

  763. standards of

  764. righteousness

  765. and then

  766. declared

  767. themselves

  768. the righteous

  769. answer

  770. as Jesus

  771. had.

  772. No one

  773. had so

  774. warned

  775. against

  776. false

  777. prophets

  778. and

  779. false

  780. believers

  781. as

  782. Jesus

  783. had.

  784. Jesus'

  785. listeners

  786. were amazed

  787. at the

  788. authority

  789. that He

  790. spoke with.

  791. But Jesus'

  792. listeners

  793. in His

  794. day

  795. and in

  796. ours

  797. need more

  798. than

  799. amazement.

  800. We need

  801. belief.

  802. There were

  803. many in

  804. Jesus'

  805. hearing

  806. in His

  807. day,

  808. and there

  809. have been

  810. many since

  811. that have

  812. read and

  813. have studied

  814. and have

  815. poured over

  816. the Sermon

  817. on the

  818. Mount and

  819. are amazed

  820. by its

  821. teaching.

  822. There are

  823. many in

  824. our day

  825. that pick

  826. it up

  827. as a

  828. good

  829. moralistic

  830. guide for

  831. life.

  832. We

  833. shouldn't

  834. just be

  835. amazed

  836. at His

  837. words.

  838. We need

  839. to believe

  840. in His

  841. words

  842. and do

  843. them.

  844. We need

  845. to be

  846. like the

  847. Peter of

  848. John

    John 6 chapter mention

  849. chapter 6

  850. after

  851. Jesus

  852. had said

  853. many

  854. difficult

  855. things.

  856. He said

  857. all kinds

  858. of stuff

  859. about eating

  860. His

  861. flesh

  862. and drinking

  863. His

  864. blood

  865. and people

  866. are getting

  867. a little

  868. bit weirded

  869. out

  870. by Jesus.

  871. Many

  872. abandoned.

  873. The

  874. disciples

  875. left in

  876. droves.

  877. And

  878. Jesus

  879. says,

  880. what the

  881. text says,

  882. verse 66,

  883. after this

  884. many of the

  885. disciples turned

  886. back and no

  887. longer walked

  888. with Him.

  889. So Jesus

  890. said to

  891. the twelve,

  892. do you

  893. want to

  894. go away

  895. as well?

  896. Simon

  897. Peter answered

  898. Him,

  899. Lord,

  900. this is who

  901. we want

  902. to be.

  903. This is who

  904. we want

  905. to be.

  906. The

  907. Peter of

  908. John

    John 6 chapter mention

  909. chapter 6,

  910. Lord,

  911. to whom

  912. shall we

  913. go?

  914. You

  915. have the

  916. words of

  917. eternal

  918. life and

  919. we have

  920. believed

  921. and have

  922. come to

  923. know that

  924. you are

  925. the Holy

  926. One of

  927. God.

  928. May we

  929. be those

  930. who

  931. declare

  932. Jesus

  933. as the

  934. Holy One

  935. of God,

  936. the Christ,

  937. the narrow

  938. gate and

  939. the rock.

  940. And may we

  941. enter by

  942. Him and

  943. build our

  944. houses on

  945. Him into

  946. the eternal

  947. rest of

  948. God.

  949. Let's pray

  950. together.
