  1. Now, while you're getting there, I want to prepare us a little bit for what we're going to be studying this morning.

  2. And I believe that over the last week, if we think about it, the last month maybe, or even the last year probably for all of us,

  3. we can think of times when we have struggled with worry, when we have struggled with anxiety,

  4. when we've struggled with feeling overwhelmed.

  5. I know that from talking to many of us and knowing myself that many of us can often struggle with the feeling that we can never do enough at our jobs,

  6. for our families, or even that we can never do enough work for the kingdom.

  7. Others of us struggle with the feeling that we can never measure up to the work that others are doing.

  8. Many of us set really, really high goals for ourselves, and then we're so, so, so frustrated with ourselves

  9. when we see the great distance between where we're at and the goals that we've set.

  10. I've been in all those places.

  11. I've seen the reality of reaching the end of my power in almost everything.

  12. I've fully exhausted the end of what I can do and failed to acknowledge or accept the Lord's help.

  13. And that's when we run to that worry, that anxiety, that avoidance.

  14. I ran to everything I could to get rid of that weight that can just be weighing down on us so much.

  15. And I think if we all think about it, I think if we're honest, we all hit those points.

  16. We've been there, and sometimes that may just be a mindset struggle,

  17. or other times it may flow out in our actions and be very apparent.

  18. But I'm up here this morning to preach about peace.

  19. So why am I starting with all of this anxiety, this worry, these ideas about work?

  20. Because those tend to be the opposites of peace.

  21. We often run to those and away from the peace that the Lord has provided through his birth, life, death, and resurrection.

  22. It's what we so often run to.

  23. So just a quick story.

  24. So almost three years ago.

  25. I know the exact date.

  26. It was March 14, 2016.

  27. I know that because it's the oldest note I have in my current phone.

  28. I was sitting on the back porch of what y'all call the refuge where Matthew and Alex and Ian and Spencer live.

  29. I was talking to Clay.

  30. Back then, I was in his discipleship group.

  31. And he had had us listen to a sermon that is called Work and Rest.

  32. It's by Tim Keller.

  33. It's a really good sermon that has done me a lot of good in going back and listening to it quite a few times since then.

  34. I'd really recommend that if you struggle with prioritizing work and rest.

  35. And in his sermon, he talks about the modern culture and how in many ways, many of us have become workaholics in a way that has never been seen before.

  36. He explains that because many of us can work from anywhere, we do work from anywhere and work from everywhere and often do that all the time.

  37. We struggle to find true rest.

  38. Many of us, I know that I personally get called out for this a lot, constantly have a productivity mindset.

  39. If something doesn't seem immediately productive, we're not going to do it.

  40. I think a lot of us struggle with that.

  41. And rest is one of those things that doesn't seem immediately productive.

  42. Those that are really close to me have had to call me out to remind me that the Lord has called us to a life that needs some rest, needs some Sabbath, needs some peace.

  43. After all, we're not God.

  44. We're simply laborers in the Lord.

  45. We're not our own lords, but so, so, so often we try to be.

  46. So often.

  47. In Keller's sermon, I'll borrow a few things he says.

  48. He gives three ways in which we often try to constantly work.

  49. He asserts that we constantly feel this pressure to prove ourselves in three different ways.

  50. Firstly, he says that we feel the need to prove ourselves to God.

  51. We feel the need to prove ourselves to God.

  52. Secondly, we feel the need to prove ourselves to ourselves.

  53. And thirdly, that we feel the need to prove ourselves to others.

  54. So going back to that day in March of 2016, as Clay and I were talking on the back porch,

  55. I really began to think about those three.

  56. And realized that I had put so much effort into one of those for sure, and oftentimes all three of those.

  57. And that's so dangerous.

  58. Being in a constant state of trying to prove ourselves and feeling this weight that we're not good enough,

  59. either for God, for ourselves, or for others,

  60. takes us so far away from that hope, that joy, that peace that are found in the gospel of Christ.

  61. Now these realities, I think, can come in the forms that we often think of them in.

  62. I think what comes to my mind when I think about proving ourselves to God

  63. is the view that pretty much all of the world that does not trust in Christ,

  64. is their only hope, has that if we do enough good things or we avoid enough bad things,

  65. that we're good.

  66. We'll have whatever afterlife we imagine.

  67. We'll be set.

  68. When we think about proving ourselves to ourselves,

  69. I think many of us have the idea that we need to have as good of a house,

  70. as good of a car, as raise our family well,

  71. at least as well as our parents did,

  72. hold down a good career.

  73. When we think about proving ourselves to others,

  74. I think we think of some of the same things.

  75. doing lots of good things,

  76. having lots of worldly possessions,

  77. doing every possible activity that we can.

  78. And all that's just to impress other people.

  79. All of that.

  80. Now all those are very, very dangerous,

  81. and I don't want to deny that in one bit,

  82. because they show a heart that is either not currently set on the gospel

  83. or has never put its hope in the gospel.

  84. But I know that for myself and for many of the rest of us,

  85. there's some very much more subtle ways that we start believing these,

  86. and because of how subtle they are,

  87. I think they can be possibly even more dangerous.

  88. Thinking about trying to prove ourselves to God

  89. and doing every possible ministry opportunity

  90. and never saying no.

  91. Being a part of way too many campus ministries

  92. to the detriment of commitments to each one

  93. and to the church

  94. and to all the other legitimately important things in life as well.

  95. Or hanging about proving ourselves to God

  96. and taking pride in these long stretches of avoiding sin

  97. and boasting that we haven't struggled with something in a really long time.

  98. And then when we do sin,

  99. being utterly defeated when we slip up,

  100. and that shows we've been putting our confidence in our own good works

  101. instead of the finished work of Christ.

  102. I've also found myself in the state of wanting to prove myself to myself

  103. and being completely unwilling to participate in something like a leisure activity

  104. because it doesn't seem productive.

  105. Running away from opportunities to be with the community

  106. because we feel that we are too busy

  107. and thinking that everything must be directly productive.

  108. And treating ourselves as if we have all the power in the world

  109. and so we can be involved in everything there is that is good.

  110. And then I think even worse of trying to prove ourselves to others

  111. and wanting people to realize how busy we are

  112. or wanting to do service that is in the spotlight

  113. but being unwilling to do something that's behind the scenes.

  114. I think I could go on and on all morning

  115. but I don't think I need to.

  116. I'm aware that many of those overlap

  117. and I want to communicate those realities for a number of reasons

  118. not the least of which being that I want to apologize

  119. to any of you who have been hurt by my own sinful tendencies

  120. to want to prove myself.

  121. I also believe that if we're honest

  122. we all struggle in some way

  123. of feeling the need to prove ourselves.

  124. And any of those start to rely on our own works

  125. and not putting our hope

  126. and joy

  127. and ultimately having peace

  128. in the finished work of Christ.

  129. Okay.

  130. So I'm here to talk about peace.

  131. So let's get to it.

  132. So Luke 2.

  133. Luke 2.

  134. So this is a very, very, very familiar Christmas passage.

  135. If I'm not careful in my reading of it

  136. I'm going to switch half the words to KJV

  137. because I remember men in my family's church reading it so often.

  138. Because of those kind of realities

  139. I'd really like to encourage you not to just check out.

  140. Don't think you've heard this passage 80 times

  141. and so you don't need to listen.

  142. Brothers and sisters, as Nathan faithfully reminds us

  143. this is the word of God.

  144. It was written for the Lord's glory and for our good.

  145. It will be good for us this morning to listen to it

  146. in order to believe its promises

  147. and obey its commands.

  148. So verse 1 of Luke 2.

  149. So as in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus

  150. that all the world should be registered.

  151. This was the first registration

  152. when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

  153. And all went to be registered

  154. each to his own town.

  155. And Joseph also went up from Galilee

  156. from the town of Nazareth

  157. to Judea

  158. to the city of David

  159. which is called Bethlehem

  160. because he was of the house

  161. and lineage of David

  162. to be registered with Mary

  163. his betrothed

  164. who is with child.

  165. And while they were there

  166. the time came for her to give birth

  167. and she gave birth to her firstborn son

  168. and wrapped him in swaddling clothes

  169. and laid him in a manger

  170. because there was no place for them

  171. in the inn.

  172. And in the same region

  173. there were shepherds out in the field

  174. keeping watch over their flock by night.

  175. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them

  176. and the glory of the Lord shone around them

  177. and they were filled with great fear.

  178. And the angel said to them

  179. Fear not

  180. for behold I bring you good news

  181. of great joy

  182. that will be for all the people.

  183. For unto you is born this day

  184. in the city of David

  185. a Savior

  186. who is Christ the Lord.

  187. And this will be a sign to you

  188. for you will find a baby

  189. wrapped in swaddling clothes

  190. and lying in a manger.

  191. And suddenly

  192. there was with the angel

  193. a multitude of heavenly hosts

  194. praising God and saying

  195. Glory to God in the highest

  196. and on earth

  197. peace among those

  198. with whom he is pleased.

  199. When the angels went away

  200. from them into heaven

  201. the shepherds said to one another

  202. let us go over to Bethlehem

  203. and see this thing

  204. that has happened

  205. which the Lord has made known to us.

  206. And they went with haste

  207. and found Mary and Joseph

  208. and the baby

  209. lying in a manger.

  210. And when they saw it

  211. they made known the saying

  212. that had been told them

  213. concerning this child.

  214. And all who heard it

  215. wondered what the shepherds told them.

  216. But Mary treasured up

  217. all these things

  218. pondering them in her heart.

  219. And the shepherds returned

  220. glorifying and praising God

  221. for all they had heard and seen

  222. as it had been told them.

  223. And at the end of eight days

  224. when he was circumcised

  225. he was called Jesus

  226. the name given by the angel

  227. before he was conceived

  228. in the womb.

  229. Let's pray.

  230. Lord this morning

  231. I just ask that you would

  232. teach us about your peace.

  233. Let us not go away from here

  234. struggling with the anxiety

  235. and the worry

  236. that we so often

  237. try to hold on to Lord.

  238. Help us learn from your word.

  239. Guard my tongue

  240. from saying anything

  241. false.

  242. Let anything fall

  243. on deaf ears

  244. that is untrue Lord

  245. and truly teach us

  246. from your word this morning.

  247. In Jesus name we pray.

  248. Amen.

  249. So

  250. I'll be

  251. very honest

  252. and say

  253. I had a very difficult time

  254. deciding on my main text

  255. for this morning.

  256. Very, very difficult.

  257. There are many

  258. passages

  259. about

  260. the peace of God.

  261. The peace we have

  262. with God

  263. through Christ.

  264. The peace we have

  265. within our souls

  266. because of being

  267. accepted in Christ

  268. and the peace we can share

  269. with others

  270. because of who we are

  271. now in Christ.

  272. But I really struggled

  273. to decide which one

  274. would be most beneficial.

  275. So after a lot of thought

  276. and prayer

  277. and confidence

  278. that all scripture

  279. is beneficial

  280. for teaching,

  281. correction,

  282. reproof,

  283. training in righteousness

  284. I landed here

  285. and we'll also hit

  286. a lot of the other passages.

  287. So before we talk

  288. about this text

  289. I want to give you

  290. a little bit

  291. of the structure

  292. for the forward heading.

  293. So I'm going to use

  294. a heading

  295. and there will be

  296. three sub points

  297. within that.

  298. So our heading is

  299. How Our Saviors

  300. Birth, Life, Death,

  301. and Resurrection.

  302. That's How Our Saviors

  303. Birth, Life, Death,

  304. and Resurrection.

  305. The three points

  306. under that

  307. will be

  308. firstly

  309. brings us peace

  310. with God.

  311. Brings us peace

  312. with God.

  313. Secondly

  314. brings us peace

  315. with ourselves.

  316. And thirdly

  317. brings us peace

  318. with others.

  319. So,

  320. we're going to start

  321. with how our

  322. Savior's birth,

  323. life, death,

  324. and resurrection

  325. brings us peace

  326. with God.

  327. So here in this text

  328. we hear the very

  329. familiar story

  330. of our Savior's birth.

  331. We see Mary and Joseph

  332. have traveled to the town

  333. of Bethlehem

  334. to be registered

  335. or taxed

  336. and while they're

  337. on this journey

  338. it came time

  339. for Jesus to be born.

  340. When he was born

  341. he was laid in a manger

  342. there was no room

  343. for them in the inn.

  344. And we hear a little bit

  345. about the perspective

  346. of some other people.

  347. So some shepherds

  348. who were doing

  349. their thing

  350. they were just

  351. watching their flocks

  352. like they typically do

  353. and suddenly

  354. an angel

  355. appeared to them

  356. told them

  357. of good news

  358. of great joy

  359. something that would

  360. be good for all

  361. people it says.

  362. The angel told them

  363. that that day

  364. a Savior

  365. had been born

  366. who's called

  367. Christ the Lord

  368. the long expected

  369. Jesus.

  370. The angel then

  371. tells the shepherds

  372. how they're going

  373. to find him

  374. and as the angel

  375. is finishing

  376. giving the spill

  377. about Jesus

  378. suddenly there's

  379. a ton of angels

  380. and they're so excited

  381. they say glory to God

  382. in the highest

  383. and on earth

  384. peace among those

  385. with whom he is pleased.

  386. So this birth

  387. ushers in

  388. great glory to the Lord

  389. great excitement

  390. as they say

  391. peace among those

  392. with whom he is pleased.

  393. Seems like a pretty

  394. significant event

  395. for that to happen.

  396. I mean angels

  397. have come proclaiming

  398. glory to God

  399. in the highest

  400. but then I go

  401. and see this

  402. child born

  403. and nothing

  404. seems overly

  405. fancy here

  406. in this account

  407. fairly normal birth

  408. so what's the

  409. big deal?

  410. How does this

  411. birth bring glory

  412. to God

  413. in the highest

  414. and peace

  415. among those

  416. with whom the

  417. Lord is pleased?

  418. Well I think

  419. most if not all

  420. of us

  421. are very very

  422. acquainted

  423. with the glorious

  424. truth of us

  425. but it is good

  426. to be reminded

  427. so let's let the

  428. scripture do that.

  429. So now really

  430. getting into

  431. our point

  432. of how it brings

  433. us peace with God.

  434. We follow the

  435. narrative a little

  436. bit through Luke

  437. we see Jesus

  438. grow up

  439. we see Jesus

  440. at age 12

  441. in the temple

  442. answering questions

  443. and asking questions

  444. and the teachers

  445. are amazed

  446. at his understanding

  447. and his answers

  448. and we see

  449. something beautiful

  450. I believe

  451. if you flip over

  452. to Luke 3

  453. where John the Baptist

  454. is preparing the way

  455. for Jesus' ministry

  456. and he says

  457. sweet words

  458. found in Isaiah 40

  459. recorded here

  460. in verses 4-6

  461. says

  462. the voice of one

  463. crying in the wilderness

  464. prepare the way

  465. of the Lord

  466. make his path straight

  467. every valley

  468. shall be filled

  469. and every mountain

  470. and hill

  471. shall be made low

  472. and the crooked

  473. shall become straight

  474. and the rough places

  475. shall become level ways

  476. and all flesh

  477. shall see the salvation

  478. of God.

  479. So John is preparing

  480. the way

  481. ushering something

  482. new in

  483. all flesh

  484. shall see the salvation

  485. of God

  486. that's huge

  487. later on the chapter

  488. he explains

  489. that he's baptizing

  490. with water

  491. but there's one coming

  492. that he's not even

  493. worthy to untie

  494. his sandals

  495. and he will baptize

  496. with the Holy Spirit

  497. and with fire.

  498. So there's something

  499. new coming

  500. and this new thing

  501. that's coming

  502. is coming through

  503. this boy

  504. who was just born

  505. Jesus.

  506. So looking a little bit

  507. further into Luke

  508. we see Jesus

  509. being tempted

  510. of the devil

  511. and we see Jesus

  512. strongly rebuke

  513. the devil

  514. as someone with

  515. authority

  516. and with power.

  517. We then see him

  518. begin his ministry

  519. preaching good news

  520. preaching repent

  521. for the kingdom

  522. of heaven

  523. is at hand.

  524. And there's remarks

  525. all the time

  526. of this Jesus

  527. is preaching

  528. with authority

  529. and not like

  530. the typical teachers.

  531. But then I believe

  532. one of the most

  533. astounding things

  534. about the accounts

  535. of Jesus' life

  536. is that he never

  537. gives in to temptation.

  538. Never gives in

  539. to temptation.

  540. In fact

  541. in describing

  542. Jesus' life

  543. the author of Hebrews

  544. says this

  545. in chapter 4

  546. verse 15

  547. for we do not

  548. have a high priest

  549. who is unable

  550. to sympathize

  551. with our weaknesses

  552. but one who is

  553. in every respect

  554. has been tempted

  555. as we are

  556. yet he's without sin.

  557. He never gave in

  558. to temptation.

  559. And so going through

  560. the accounts

  561. of Jesus' life

  562. he offended many.

  563. After all

  564. he spoke with

  565. the authority

  566. of God.

  567. He spoke with

  568. the authority

  569. to forgive sins

  570. and to call out sin

  571. which he did so

  572. quite frequently

  573. and did not

  574. back down from

  575. at all.

  576. And ultimately

  577. people were so

  578. offended

  579. and so hardened

  580. in their own ways

  581. that they decided

  582. that instead of

  583. having what we

  584. would now think

  585. of as the worst

  586. type of criminal

  587. killed

  588. they would have

  589. that man freed

  590. but would have

  591. Jesus crucified.

  592. And now this

  593. Jesus was crucified

  594. and in fact

  595. he died.

  596. But then three days

  597. later he rose

  598. from the dead.

  599. And this isn't

  600. some myth

  601. that we like to tell

  602. especially during

  603. this time of year

  604. but he appeared

  605. to many witnesses.

  606. So what does

  607. this matter

  608. for our peace?

  609. Why were we

  610. not at peace

  611. before?

  612. So to answer

  613. that question

  614. turn with me

  615. to Romans 5.

  616. Romans 5.

  617. Romans 5.

  618. So here in Romans 5

  619. I would like to look

  620. at the first

  621. 11 verses

  622. and unpack

  623. just a bit of

  624. what it has

  625. to say here.

  626. Pick it up

  627. in verse 1

  628. of Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  629. It says

  630. Therefore since

  631. we've been justified

  632. by faith

  633. we have peace

  634. with the God

  635. through our Lord

  636. Jesus Christ.

  637. Through him

  638. we have also

  639. obtained access

  640. by faith

  641. into this grace

  642. in which we stand

  643. and we rejoice

  644. in hope of the glory

  645. of God.

  646. Not only that

  647. but we rejoice

  648. in our sufferings

  649. knowing that

  650. suffering produces

  651. endurance

  652. and endurance

  653. produces character

  654. and character

  655. produces hope

  656. and hope does not

  657. put us to shame

  658. because God's love

  659. has been poured

  660. into our hearts

  661. through the Holy Spirit

  662. who has been given

  663. to us.

  664. For while we are

  665. still weak

  666. at the right time

  667. Christ died

  668. for the ungodly

  669. for one will scarcely

  670. die for a righteous

  671. person

  672. though perhaps

  673. for a good person

  674. one would dare

  675. even to die

  676. but God shows

  677. his love for us

  678. in that while we

  679. were still sinners

  680. Christ died for us

  681. since therefore

  682. we have now been

  683. justified by his blood

  684. much more

  685. shall we be saved

  686. by him

  687. from the wrath

  688. of God

  689. for if while

  690. we were enemies

  691. we were reconciled

  692. to God

  693. by the death

  694. of his son

  695. much more

  696. now that we

  697. are reconciled

  698. shall we be

  699. saved by his life

  700. more than that

  701. we also rejoice

  702. in God

  703. through our Lord

  704. Jesus Christ

  705. through whom

  706. we have now

  707. received reconciliation

  708. so I'm very aware

  709. that this is a very

  710. packed passage

  711. and it's not my

  712. goal this morning

  713. to completely

  714. unpack everything

  715. but there's some

  716. really important things

  717. about our piece here

  718. that I want to talk

  719. about

  720. so I'm going to

  721. somewhat work it

  722. from the middle

  723. end area

  724. back to the beginning

  725. so let's look back

  726. at verses 6-8

  727. it says

  728. for while we were

  729. still weak

  730. at the right time

  731. Christ died

  732. for the ungodly

  733. for one will

  734. scarcely die

  735. for a righteous

  736. person

  737. though perhaps

  738. for a good person

  739. one would dare

  740. even to die

  741. but God

  742. shows his love

  743. for us

  744. and that while

  745. we were still

  746. sinners

  747. Christ died

  748. for us

  749. note a couple

  750. of things

  751. in these verses

  752. okay

  753. Paul describes

  754. us as weak

  755. and as sinners

  756. I think he's being

  757. honestly kind of

  758. nice there

  759. elsewhere

  760. where we're

  761. described as

  762. dead

  763. as dead

  764. in our sins

  765. unable to do

  766. anything good

  767. we're described

  768. as not being

  769. righteous

  770. completely

  771. unable

  772. for any good

  773. work

  774. never seeking

  775. for God

  776. always turning

  777. away

  778. worthless

  779. now Paul is

  780. stating that

  781. even with us

  782. in that state

  783. Christ died

  784. for us

  785. he didn't die

  786. for an innocent

  787. child

  788. he didn't die

  789. for a

  790. lovely woman

  791. he didn't die

  792. for a strong

  793. and loving

  794. man

  795. he died

  796. for sinners

  797. he died

  798. for the ungodly

  799. he died

  800. for us

  801. while we were

  802. in that state

  803. of never

  804. seeking him

  805. and always

  806. railing against

  807. him

  808. never turning

  809. away from

  810. our sin

  811. and in fact

  812. not even

  813. being able

  814. to turn

  815. away from

  816. our sin

  817. we were

  818. worthless

  819. but he died

  820. for us

  821. in that state

  822. and we could

  823. talk about

  824. what great

  825. love that is

  826. for hours

  827. but I don't

  828. want to steal

  829. next week's

  830. sermon

  831. but what I do

  832. want to talk

  833. about is how

  834. that death

  835. brought us

  836. peace

  837. now we believe

  838. that God

  839. is altogether

  840. righteous

  841. and altogether

  842. holy

  843. he cannot

  844. tolerate sin

  845. sin must be

  846. punished or

  847. otherwise he

  848. would not be

  849. righteous or

  850. holy

  851. think about the

  852. realities of sin

  853. for any length

  854. of time and

  855. as Lord gives

  856. you grace to

  857. see it

  858. we will truly

  859. see it that it

  860. is that horrible

  861. so if this is

  862. the case

  863. if it's the

  864. case that God

  865. is truly

  866. altogether

  867. righteous

  868. altogether

  869. holy

  870. and we

  871. are worthless

  872. and always

  873. turning to

  874. sin

  875. we should

  876. not be

  877. able to

  878. be in his

  879. presence

  880. we should

  881. be damned

  882. to punishment

  883. forever and

  884. that's rightful

  885. but here in

  886. verse 1

  887. Paul states

  888. that through

  889. faith in

  890. Jesus life

  891. death

  892. resurrection

  893. we can

  894. have peace

  895. with God

  896. the angels

  897. back in Luke

  898. proclaimed glory

  899. to God

  900. in the highest

  901. and on earth

  902. peace among

  903. those with whom

  904. he is pleased

  905. so how does

  906. that work

  907. how can this

  908. work with the

  909. reality of the

  910. depth of our

  911. sinfulness and

  912. the depth of the

  913. Lord's righteousness

  914. and holiness

  915. let's go back to

  916. this person of

  917. Jesus

  918. we said this person

  919. of Jesus lived

  920. the perfect life

  921. was tempted just

  922. as we were

  923. but yet did not

  924. sin

  925. but was crucified

  926. suffered a sinner's

  927. death but three

  928. days later he

  929. rose again

  930. then look down at

  931. verse 9

  932. it says since

  933. therefore we have

  934. now been justified

  935. by his blood

  936. much more shall

  937. we be saved by

  938. him from the

  939. wrath of God

  940. for if while

  941. we were enemies

  942. were reconciled

  943. to God by

  944. the death of

  945. his son

  946. much more

  947. now that we

  948. are reconciled

  949. shall we be

  950. saved by his

  951. life

  952. more than that

  953. we also rejoice

  954. in God through

  955. our Lord Jesus

  956. Christ through

  957. whom we have

  958. now received

  959. reconciliation

  960. as we've been

  961. justified by his

  962. blood and saved

  963. from the wrath

  964. of God

  965. and for even

  966. more clarification

  967. in verse 1

  968. it says we are

  969. justified by our

  970. faith in his

  971. life death

  972. resurrection

  973. so putting all

  974. that together

  975. through our

  976. Lord Jesus

  977. and putting faith

  978. in his blood

  979. shed on our

  980. behalf on the

  981. cross

  982. he lived that

  983. perfect life

  984. the life that

  985. we should have

  986. lived but have

  987. never been

  988. capable of

  989. but he suffered

  990. the death for

  991. our sins

  992. so that when

  993. God sees us

  994. he does not see

  995. our filthy

  996. nasty

  997. worthless

  998. sin but he

  999. sees Christ's

  1000. righteousness

  1001. and his blood

  1002. shed on our

  1003. behalf

  1004. and that's the

  1005. heart of our

  1006. faith

  1007. and because of

  1008. this the great

  1009. work of our

  1010. Savior's birth

  1011. life death

  1012. resurrection

  1013. we have peace

  1014. with God

  1015. no more need

  1016. to prove

  1017. ourselves to

  1018. God

  1019. number one

  1020. because we

  1021. can't

  1022. and number

  1023. two because

  1024. Christ has

  1025. already done

  1026. the work for

  1027. us

  1028. Christ has

  1029. already done

  1030. the work for

  1031. us

  1032. so that brings

  1033. us to our

  1034. next point

  1035. how our

  1036. Savior's birth

  1037. life death

  1038. and resurrection

  1039. brings us

  1040. peace with

  1041. ourselves

  1042. how our

  1043. Savior's birth

  1044. life death

  1045. and resurrection

  1046. brings us

  1047. peace with

  1048. ourselves

  1049. like I said

  1050. earlier I think

  1051. many of us

  1052. hold ourselves

  1053. to really

  1054. really high

  1055. standards

  1056. I think we

  1057. often feel the

  1058. need that we

  1059. must prove

  1060. ourselves to

  1061. ourselves

  1062. we set

  1063. really lofty

  1064. goals

  1065. and get so

  1066. angry at

  1067. ourselves

  1068. when we

  1069. can't meet

  1070. them

  1071. whether they

  1072. be spiritual

  1073. or just

  1074. typical goals

  1075. when we

  1076. fail to

  1077. meet those

  1078. goals we

  1079. get frustrated

  1080. we can

  1081. get really

  1082. down on

  1083. ourselves

  1084. even hate

  1085. ourselves

  1086. I must

  1087. confess that

  1088. that is

  1089. really often

  1090. where I

  1091. find myself

  1092. never quite

  1093. living up

  1094. to the

  1095. goals I

  1096. have for

  1097. myself as

  1098. a follower

  1099. of Christ

  1100. as a

  1101. husband

  1102. as a

  1103. church

  1104. member

  1105. and as

  1106. a teacher

  1107. I believe

  1108. many of

  1109. us can

  1110. very easily

  1111. begin to

  1112. believe

  1113. lies that

  1114. we will

  1115. lose God's

  1116. affection

  1117. if we're

  1118. going through

  1119. a rough

  1120. patch

  1121. spiritually

  1122. or not

  1123. living up

  1124. to how

  1125. we see

  1126. our roles

  1127. working out

  1128. but let's

  1129. think about

  1130. that idea

  1131. for a bit

  1132. all of our

  1133. striving

  1134. all of our

  1135. work

  1136. all of our

  1137. pressing on

  1138. all of our

  1139. trying to be

  1140. the very best

  1141. that we can

  1142. be

  1143. all of our

  1144. so often

  1145. trying to

  1146. be God

  1147. whether that

  1148. be intentional

  1149. or unintentional

  1150. what is that

  1151. compared to

  1152. all our

  1153. righteousness

  1154. is compared

  1155. to filthy

  1156. racks

  1157. apart from the

  1158. saving work of

  1159. Christ we can

  1160. do nothing

  1161. good

  1162. and you may

  1163. say that

  1164. doesn't help

  1165. me feel

  1166. peace about

  1167. myself at

  1168. all and

  1169. it doesn't

  1170. me either

  1171. but

  1172. we keep

  1173. tracking a

  1174. little bit

  1175. earlier we

  1176. concluded all

  1177. those things

  1178. that yeah

  1179. we're filthy

  1180. sinners who

  1181. are worthless

  1182. yeah

  1183. but we also

  1184. concluded that

  1185. somehow we

  1186. have peace

  1187. with God

  1188. is this

  1189. peace with

  1190. God coming

  1191. from how

  1192. well we

  1193. work spiritually

  1194. coming from

  1195. how well

  1196. we are

  1197. doing in

  1198. our roles

  1199. whatever those

  1200. may be

  1201. not at all

  1202. not at all

  1203. yes we can

  1204. do nothing

  1205. good without

  1206. Christ

  1207. but we have

  1208. been given

  1209. God's love

  1210. he's shown us

  1211. such great love

  1212. that even while

  1213. we were sinners

  1214. railing against

  1215. him he died

  1216. for us

  1217. when the Lord

  1218. sees us he no

  1219. longer sees

  1220. our sin he

  1221. sees the

  1222. finished work

  1223. of Christ

  1224. now God is

  1225. the person

  1226. who controls

  1227. our ultimate

  1228. destiny it's

  1229. not up to

  1230. us it's up

  1231. to him and

  1232. because of

  1233. this we are

  1234. justified

  1235. reconciled

  1236. accepted in

  1237. sight and

  1238. that's what

  1239. matters

  1240. to go off of

  1241. our theme

  1242. that we missed

  1243. last week I

  1244. think that

  1245. should bring us

  1246. great joy that

  1247. it's not not

  1248. up to us having

  1249. peace with God

  1250. and not just

  1251. that but being

  1252. welcomed into

  1253. the Lord's

  1254. family it's not

  1255. up to us and

  1256. if that's the

  1257. case we

  1258. shouldn't let

  1259. our failings

  1260. overly frustrate

  1261. us or even

  1262. turn to hatred

  1263. of ourself but

  1264. instead we should

  1265. marvel at the

  1266. grace shown to

  1267. us in the Lord

  1268. while we were yet

  1269. sinners and even

  1270. now as we still

  1271. struggle so much

  1272. sometimes he's

  1273. shown great love

  1274. to us so yes

  1275. we should be

  1276. constantly in a

  1277. process of

  1278. acknowledging our

  1279. failings but then

  1280. taking our minds

  1281. off that and

  1282. marveling on the

  1283. great love of

  1284. Christ shown to

  1285. us to forget

  1286. about ourselves

  1287. more and more

  1288. and to dwell on

  1289. Christ yes we

  1290. have failed and

  1291. we still fail but

  1292. our Lord has begun

  1293. the work and he

  1294. has promised he

  1295. will complete it

  1296. I think Paul

  1297. expresses this idea

  1298. really really really

  1299. well at the end

  1300. of Romans 7

  1301. turn with me

  1302. there just over to

  1303. Romans 7

  1304. I remember

  1305. going through a

  1306. certain part of

  1307. my walk with the

  1308. Lord a few years

  1309. back and I just

  1310. kept coming back to

  1311. this passage over

  1312. and over and over

  1313. being frustrated with

  1314. my own actions and

1315. I think Paul says it

1316. well so picking up in

  1317. verse 15 here

1318. says for I do not

  1319. understand my own

  1320. actions for I do

1321. not do what I want

1322. but I do the very

  1323. thing that I hate

  1324. now if I do what I

1325. do not want I agree

1326. with the law that it

1327. is good so now it is

1328. no longer I who do

  1329. it but sin that

  1330. dwells within me for

  1331. I know that nothing

1332. good dwells in me that

1333. is in my flesh for I

1334. have the desire to do

1335. what is right but not

  1336. the ability to carry

1337. it out for I do not

1338. do the good I want but

1339. the evil I do not

1340. want is what I keep

1341. on doing now if I do

1342. what I do not want it

1343. is no longer I who

1344. do it but sin that

1345. dwells within me so I

1346. find it to be a law

1347. that when I want to

  1348. do right evil lies

1349. close at hand for I

1350. delight in the law of

  1351. God and my inner

1352. being but I see in

  1353. my members another

  1354. law waging war against

1355. the law of my mind

  1356. and making me captive

1357. to the law of sin that

  1358. dwells in my members

  1359. wretched man that I

1360. am who will deliver me

  1361. from this body of

  1362. death thanks be to

  1363. God through Jesus

  1364. Christ our Lord so

  1365. then I myself serve

1366. the law of God with

1367. my mind but with my

1368. flesh I serve the law

1369. of sin I think this

  1370. idea we just talked

  1371. about is exactly what

  1372. Paul is talking about

1373. so often I believe we

  1374. find ourselves really

  1375. enjoying the gospel but

  1376. then so quickly our

  1377. affections being turned

1378. towards sin but look at

  1379. the ending praise to

  1380. God that he will

  1381. ultimately deliver us

  1382. from this body of

1383. death so we should be

  1384. at peace with ourselves

  1385. and not constantly

  1386. feeling down about our

  1387. failings but feeling

  1388. the joy of Christ's

1389. work so that brings us

  1390. to our third point

  1391. how our Savior's

  1392. birth life death

  1393. and resurrection

  1394. brings us peace with

  1395. others how our

  1396. Savior's birth life

  1397. death and resurrection

  1398. brings us peace with

  1399. others we mentioned

  1400. earlier when discussing

1401. the felt need to prove

  1402. ourselves to others

1403. that we so often want

  1404. to compare ourselves to

1405. others we try to look

  1406. at each other's

  1407. struggles and think oh

  1408. I'm I'm not that bad

1409. or we tend to look at

  1410. what we're doing for

1411. the Lord and then look

  1412. at what our brothers

  1413. and sisters are doing

1414. for the Lord and get

  1415. some sort of sick

  1416. satisfaction of thinking

1417. that we do more so we

1418. must be better off or

1419. we want to show others

1420. how busy we are and

1421. how committed we are and

  1422. how because of this

  1423. somehow our thinking

  1424. tells us that we're

  1425. better followers of

  1426. Christ we want others

1427. to see our own work

  1428. brothers and sisters

  1429. none of these are

  1430. gospel mindsets none

1431. of these bring glory to

1432. the work of Christ and

1433. all of these try to take

1434. the glory that the work

  1435. of Christ deserves and

1436. put it on something that

  1437. we've already concluded is

  1438. worthless and so with

  1439. that as we truly

  1440. understand the gospel of

1441. who we are in Christ

1442. what he has taken us

1443. from of the depths of

  1444. our sin then understand

1445. why he chose us of

  1446. simply his grace I

  1447. think we as believers

  1448. see that we're all

1449. really in the same boat

1450. we were all sinners we're

1451. all in a state of

  1452. spiritual death we all

1453. needed new birth but I

  1454. think we so often

  1455. struggle with the idea

  1456. of subtly thinking that

  1457. oh I've never done

  1458. anything like they've

1459. done I'm better off or

  1460. sometimes we either

  1461. intentionally or

  1462. unintentionally end up

  1463. thinking that we've

  1464. always done good works

1465. or that we don't need the

1466. Lord's grace as much as

1467. the next guy or why did

1468. the Lord save them when

  1469. they've done such bad

  1470. things and all these

  1471. sound awful like we

  1472. would never think these

1473. things but that is what

  1474. we're doing when we're

  1475. comparing ourselves to

  1476. others it's exactly what

1477. we're doing and so we

  1478. have to be vigilant

  1479. against these mindsets as

1480. they so often creep in

  1481. we must remember that

1482. all of us every single

1483. one of us has committed

  1484. an infinite trespass

1485. against a holy God and

1486. we're so all of us are

  1487. fully deserving of death

1488. and hell and we're given

1489. a grace to not be sent

1490. there right now so how

1491. does that bring us peace

1492. with others we have no

  1493. room for boasting

1494. salvation is all based on

  1495. grace and undeserved

  1496. kindness so all our

  1497. boasting must stop we

1498. all need the Lord if the

  1499. Lord counted trespasses

  1500. against us who could

1501. stand no one right we

1502. all have that flesh that

1503. still tries to creep in to

1504. destroy us to distract us

1505. from the good work the

1506. Lord's giving us and only

1507. the Lord will deliver us

1508. from that body of death

1509. none of our striving it's

1510. the Lord's work but so

1511. often we carry around the

1512. sense of some sort of

  1513. spiritual pride thinking

1514. that we do the most good

  1515. works of anybody around

1516. us or that we avoid more

1517. sin than most but when we

  1518. truly understand our

  1519. position of being saved

  1520. completely by grace alone

1521. through faith alone in the

1522. work of Christ and nothing

  1523. of ourselves alone that

  1524. there's no good in

  1525. ourselves apart from his

1526. work our pride and our

  1527. boasting should be gone

1528. entirely gone we have no

1529. grounds for it and as it

1530. goes away we can have the

1531. great peace and harmony that

1532. the Lord has called us to

1533. with each other with our

  1534. brothers and sisters

  1535. working together as one

1536. body for the Lord just one

1537. more quick thing on this

  1538. point to demonstrate the

1539. reality of how ridiculous our

1540. pride can be sometimes I

1541. want to share a song that I

  1542. believe demonstrates its

1543. ugliness if you grew up in a

  1544. very traditional country-ish

  1545. type church you might

1546. recognize these lyrics what I

1547. want you to pay attention to

1548. is the level of pride that it

  1549. communicates and then the

1550. realization of that in the

1551. end I'll probably get made fun

1552. of for quoting this one later

1553. but but I really think like

  1554. this communicates the

1555. ugliness of pride and the

  1556. reality of it's I guess not

1557. having any sort of base and

  1558. it's simple but it's good it

1559. says I thought number one would

1560. surely be me I thought I could

1561. do what I wanted to do excuse

  1562. me I thought I could be what I

1563. wanted to be I thought I could

1564. build on life sinking sand but

  1565. now I can't even walk without

1566. you holding my hand I thought I

1567. could do a lot on my own I

1568. thought I could make it all the

1569. day long I thought of myself as a

1570. mighty big man but Lord I can't

1571. even walk without you holding my

1572. hand so often we try to take

1573. credit and take pride in the

1574. things that the Lord is giving us

1575. to walk in this tears down our

1576. thinking about the gospel we

1577. forget that any good thing that

1578. we're able to do is a sweet grace

1579. to us and yet another thing our

1580. pride tears down the relationship

1581. we have with our brothers and

1582. sisters who make up the church

1583. so let's remember the gospel the

1584. good news that yes we can do

1585. nothing but even while we're in

1586. that Christ showed his great love

1587. to us and that he gave us his

1588. great salvation by paying the

  1589. ultimate price of a sinner's death

1590. and bearing the wrath of God for our

1591. sins let that reality rule our minds

1592. and there will be no room for pride

1593. left we'll have so much more room

1594. for peace with our brothers and

  1595. sisters I believe that's the number

1596. one thing that can tear that down

  1597. now we've we've talked about the

1598. realities of peace that the Lord has

1599. ushered in at this point we've

1600. talked about how our Savior's birth

1601. life death and resurrection has

1602. brought us peace with God peace with

1603. ourselves and peace with others but

1604. how do we maintain this how do we

1605. hold on to this peace and what does

1606. it look like can we have it all the

1607. time I want to look at one more

1608. passage before we close to turn with

  1609. me to Philippians 4 Philippians 4 I

1610. think this or maybe Ephesians 2 is

1611. probably the most common passage used

1612. to talk about this and I think

1613. rightfully so so I want to look at

  1614. verses 4 through 13 here in

1615. Philippians 4 picking up in verse 4 it

1616. says rejoice in the Lord always again I

1617. will say rejoice let your reasonableness

1618. be known to everyone the Lord is at

1619. hand do not be anxious about anything

1620. but in everything by prayer and

1621. supplication with Thanksgiving let your

1622. request be made known to God and the

1623. peace of God which surpasses all

1624. understanding will guard your hearts

1625. in your minds in Christ Jesus finally

1626. brothers whatever is true whatever is

1627. honorable whatever is just whatever is

1628. pure whatever is lovely whatever is

1629. commendable if there is any excellence

1630. there is anything worthy of praise think

1631. about these things what you have learned

1632. and received and heard and seen in me

1633. practice excuse me practice these things

1634. and the God of peace will be with you I

1635. rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at

1636. length you've revived your concern for

1637. me you were indeed concerned for me but

1638. you had no opportunity not that I'm

1639. speaking of being in need for I've

1640. learned in whatever situation I am to

1641. be content I know how to be brought low

1642. and I know how to abound in any and

1643. every circumstance I've learned the

1644. secret of placing facing plenty and

1645. hunger abundance in need I can do all

1646. things through him who strengthens me so

1647. in closing a couple of things to note when

1648. Paul is talking about this piece that

1649. surpasses all understanding he describes

1650. being able to have it in any

1651. circumstances and as verses just below

1652. it he says that he has learned in

1653. whatever situation he is in to be

1654. content he can have peace no matter

1655. what is going on around him now why is

1656. this is he some sort of super

1657. Christian that had special powers that

1658. he can do it he can have peace no

1659. matter what but we can't do it

1660. absolutely not he's able to be at

1661. peace by doing what he says right

1662. here by setting his mind look at verse

1663. eight finally brothers whatever is

1664. true whatever is honorable whatever is

1665. just whatever is pure whatever is

1666. lovely whatever is commendable if there's

1667. any excellence if there's anything

1668. worthy of praise think about these

1669. things he's setting his mind and that

1670. is how he's able to keep peace no

1671. matter what's going on around him

1672. sets his mind on the things that are

1673. actually worthy of praise he doesn't

1674. get caught up in comparing himself to

1675. others he doesn't get caught up in

1676. wallowing about in a sin but he sets his

1677. mind on the great hope we have in

1678. Christ he's thankful he takes

1679. everything to the Lord in prayer he

  1680. rejoices in the Lord

1681. what a friend we have in Jesus all our

1682. sins and griefs to bear what a privilege

1683. to carry everything to God in prayer just

1684. like it says here oh what peace we often

1685. forfeit oh what needless pain we bear all

1686. because we do not carry everything to God

1687. in care in prayer we can take our anxieties

1688. to the Lord we can set our minds on the

1689. things that are true that are honorable

1690. that are just that are pure that are

1691. lovely that are actually commendable and

1692. excellent and truly worthy of praise and

1693. now as we set our mindsets on the

1694. gospel always vigilant to battle the

1695. pride or the opposite the self-hate and

1696. the disbelief that comes in we can have

1697. true peace through our Lord no more

1698. trying to prove ourselves to him and

1699. we're trying to prove ourselves to

1700. ourselves he's done the work and to

1701. ultimately say that we are his so thus

1702. far I've spoken about a peace that is

1703. here a peace that can be had now but

1704. even better than that brothers and

1705. sisters our true life and eternity our

1706. peace will no longer have to be fought

1707. for we will have it and it will be with

1708. us forever a whole sermon could be

1709. preached on that peace but time so when

1710. we're struggling when the cares of the

1711. world try to choke out our peace when

1712. unbelievers scoff at the gospel when

1713. we are down when we are just struggling

1714. so much we can set our hope on the

1715. promise of such a great eternity when

1716. we'll be in perfect peace and thus have

1717. such great hope such great joy such

1718. great peace now as we look toward that

1719. ultimate full development so grab your

  1720. bulletin grab your bulletin

1721. there's a quote on it from william

  1722. guernal who's a 17th century english

1723. theologian i think it communicates this

  1724. reality super well

1725. says therefore you who think so basely

1726. of the gospel and the professors of it

1727. because at present their peace and

1728. comfort are not come should know that it

1729. is on the way to them and comes to stay

1730. everlastingly with them whereas your

1731. peace is going from you every moment and

1732. is sure to leave you without any hope of

1733. returning to you again look not how the

1734. christian begins but how he ends so let's

  1735. pray

  1736. and
