  1. Good morning. Open up your Bibles to Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  2. ! So whether it was planned or not, I don't know, but a lot of the songs and even what

  3. ! Aletheia Way was focused on this morning is our topic today.

  4. And how many of you are aware of your need for a great and glorious God today?

  5. And we're all in need of Him, and that never changes.

  6. Just the awareness of our need increases, I hope, day by day, of how much we actually

  7. need God. And I hope that the message today encourages you. It really has me, and I'm not

  8. just kind of saying that because I'm filling in today.

  9. But just a little introduction, like why should we listen? And we all need a great and glorious

  10. God, and we all sang that just a little while ago. And I hope that it was true as it came

  11. out of your mouth, and that you weren't singing nonsense or lies to God. You were genuinely

  12. aware of how great He is. So why listen to this message? But Tozer, in one of his books, said this,

  13. were we able to extract from any man a complete answer to this question, what comes into your

  14. mind when you think about God? We might predict with certainty the spiritual future of that man.

  15. Without doubt, the mightiest thought the mind can entertain is the thought of God. And the

  16. weightiest word in any language is the word for God. Yeah, so the greatest thoughts we have,

  17. the mightiest thoughts we have are those that we think about the living God. Our beliefs concerning

  18. Him affect how we live in public and in private behind closed doors. How we manage our days,

  19. how we manage our time, what we do with our time is affected by how we view God. Not just our actions,

  20. but the motives behind our actions relate to how we view the person of God. And God cares about how

  21. we see Him. He cares about how we understand Him. He's not satisfied or okay with warped views of who

  22. He really is. I think for many of us, whether you're married or single, I think one of the greatest

  23. desires you have is you want to be understood. You want people to know you for who you really are.

  24. You hate it when people misunderstand something that you're doing and interpret it in a wrong way.

  25. You want to be understood. And it's no different with God. But understanding who He is can mean the

  26. difference between life or death. And many people in the world, even this morning, are committing

  27. idolatry because they're worshiping a God of their own imagination rather than the God of the Scripture

  28. and the God who says, I am this way and I won't be changed by your opinions of me.

  29. And Jesus said in John 4 that it is possible to worship God in the wrong way. And so we should

  30. pay attention to this time. J.I. Packer in his book, Knowing God, he mentioned three things about

  31. how we think about God. He said, those who know God have great thoughts of Him.

  32. So if we have a very small view of God, if we have a very puny view of God, it will affect our life.

  33. People who refuse to enlarge their view of God will be left in a very pitiful state.

  34. A long time ago, during the Reformation, Luther said to Erasmus,

  35. your thoughts of God are too human. You think that He is just like us. You think that He behaves like us,

  36. acts like us, and you're wrong. So are your thoughts of God, even this morning, too human?

  37. There's enough of the person of God to go around forever, like for our souls to feast on,

  38. and enough of God to fill our hearts and minds with awe and wonder for all eternity.

  39. High thoughts of God keep us humble, dependent, and obedient, and in awe to Him.

  40. David wrote concerning these things in Psalm 139, something I've really been reading a lot of lately.

  41. He says,

  42. beyond reach and beyond our power, like to fully comprehend the person of God.

  43. It transcends in a way that even we can't attain it, and even if we could, we wouldn't understand it.

  44. But don't misunderstand me. God can be known. He can be known. He can be understood.

  45. That it is false to say that He can be fully and exhaustively known.

  46. The finite cannot fully contain the infinite.

  47. And that's where we find ourselves this morning, so it keeps us humble.

  48. So those who know God have great thoughts of God.

  49. The second way, Packer said, those who know God have great boldness for God.

  50. If you truly know Him, if you've been brought near to Him by the blood of Christ,

  51. you can throw yourself recklessly into His mission, into His purposes.

  52. There's no need for fear at all.

  53. So many of us are timid about facing everyday trials in our lives,

  54. and facing anything that has been touched by sin.

  55. We're afraid because we have a small view of our God, or we've lost sight of how big He truly is.

  56. So those of us who have an enormous, glorious view of God,

  57. we can face life without fear, and even death itself.

  58. In Daniel chapter 11, verse 32, it says,

    Daniel 11:32

  59. But the people who know their God shall be strong, stand firm, and take action.

  60. That phrase means to strive valiantly, or courageously prevail, or to stand firmly resolute.

  61. That's how understanding God really, truly is, can impact us.

  62. Then lastly, he said, those who know God have great peace in God.

  63. Not a peace that the world gives, as Jesus says,

  64. but when we really understand God for who He is,

  65. our minds are possessed with such a strong assurance that anything could come our way,

  66. and we would be okay, not in our own strength, but in His.

  67. A relationship that we have that's guaranteed by the blood of Jesus,

  68. and His favor towards us.

  69. We have nothing to fear.

  70. Trials come.

  71. Anything come.

  72. We're fine.

  73. So even death is welcomed at the end of the day,

  74. because we have a great peace in God.

  75. So, we cannot misunderstand who the person of God is.

  76. And so just to catch a glimpse of this,

  77. we're going to look at Exodus 3 today,

  78. the encounter of Moses and God on Mount Sinai.

  79. But just the background,

  80. Moses has fled the land of Egypt because he killed an Egyptian that he saw beating a fellow Hebrew.

  81. And he flees to the land of Midian,

  82. which is basically where modern Saudi Arabia is today.

  83. And he kind of lives a very low-key life there,

  84. and is married to a Midianite woman,

  85. and lives in obscurity until he wanders to the base of Mount Sinai.

  86. So there, Moses, God experiences like the God of covenant faithfulness,

  87. and a great compassion to come and deliver his people from the bondage in Egypt.

  88. It's a divine human encounter that we can learn a lot from.

  89. So he faces the person of God here,

  90. and in words that cannot be described,

  91. he is overwhelmed.

  92. So let's read this together.

  93. Let's start in verse 1.

  94. It says,

  95. Let's read this together.

  96. Let's read this together.

  97. Let's read this together.

  98. Let's read this together.

  99. Let's read this together.

  100. Let's read this together.

  101. Let's read this together.

  102. Let's read this together.

  103. Let's read this together.

  104. Let's read this together.

  105. And he said, Here I am.

  106. Then he said, Do not come near.

  107. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.

  108. And he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.

  109. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

  110. Then the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt.

  111. And I have heard their cry because of their taskmasters.

  112. I know their sufferings.

  113. I have come down to deliver them out of the land of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of the land to a good and broad land.

  114. A land flowing with milk and honey to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

  115. And now, behold, the cry of my people of Israel has come to me.

  116. And I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppressed them.

  117. Come, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.

  118. But Moses said to God, Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?

  119. He said, But I will be with you, and this shall be a sign for you that I have sent you.

  120. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.

  121. Then Moses said to God, If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me.

  122. And they ask me, What is his name?

  123. What shall I say to them?

  124. And God said to Moses, I am who I am.

  125. And he said, Say to this people of Israel, I am has sent me to you.

  126. God also said to Moses, Say this to the people of Israel, The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me to you.

  127. This is my name forever, and thus I am remembered throughout all generations.

  128. So, I'll stop there.

  129. If that's not enough for us to chew on for a little while.

  130. So, in the Bible, names carry a lot more meaning than most people today in our culture seem to think about.

  131. In the Scripture, the name of a person signifies their character, their ability, their mission,

  132. especially when the name is actually given by God Himself.

  133. So, example, Adam names his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.

  134. And even greater example, the Son of God came into the world, and Mary was told,

  135. You shall call him Jesus, for he will save his people.

  136. So, their names are connected to their mission.

  137. So, names have a lot of meaning.

  138. And in the Old Testament, we just read,

  139. I am who I am in Hebrew is the verb to be or to exist.

  140. So, simply put, and this is overstating the simplicity of this more than likely,

  141. but simply put, God told Moses,

  142. I will be what I will be.

  143. I have always existed, and I will always exist.

  144. I just am.

  145. And we look in a lot of our English translations,

  146. there's a substitute word to throw in, the capital, all caps, L-O-R-D, LORD.

  147. And in the Hebrew, when they read out loud,

  148. they would not read God's precise name,

  149. but substitute it with Adonai.

  150. Where they saw the four-letter word,

  151. Y-H-W-H,

  152. meaning Yahweh.

  153. God's proper name in Hebrew,

  154. used around close to 7,000 times.

  155. A lot of emphasis there.

  156. That's three times as much as Elohim.

  157. That's still a very significant name.

  158. And the aim of this was,

  159. God wants to show that he's not just a generic deity,

  160. that he wants to be known for who he actually is.

  161. So, God's name carries his unique character and his mission.

  162. So, when God said this,

  163. when God said,

  164. I am who I am,

  165. we can somewhat derive a few things of what he actually meant when he said that.

  166. So, here's the first thing.

  167. What is God saying?

  168. What is God trying to communicate to us through his name?

  169. The first thing is,

  170. God is one.

  171. God is one.

  172. This is also called in theological circles,

  173. the unity of God.

  174. But it means that the person of God

  175. is not divided into parts or sections.

  176. In the old,

  177. there's several,

  178. I think two,

  179. old church catechisms and statements of faith

  180. that say,

  181. they call this the simplicity of God.

  182. Not saying that God is simple,

  183. meaning that he's small and unintelligent,

  184. but simple meaning like this is a simple device.

  185. It's not complex.

  186. It doesn't have a lot of parts to it.

  187. So, it means that the person of God

  188. is not divided into parts or sections,

  189. but yet we can see

  190. different parts of God's character

  191. emphasized at different times.

  192. God is all that he is all the time.

  193. Get your head around that statement.

  194. Write it down if you have to.

  195. God simply is all that he is all the time.

  196. And God reveals himself to us in such fullness

  197. that there can be nothing boring about him.

  198. So, let's unpack this a little bit.

  199. How do we relate this idea that God is one

  200. or God is simple to his attributes?

  201. Those of us who have looked into this before,

  202. we know that we've chopped God up

  203. into his attributes,

  204. which is okay.

  205. I'll explain.

  206. But there's the incommunicable attributes,

  207. which means that we as human beings

  208. cannot relate to these attributes at all.

  209. They're only divine attributes.

  210. Things like omnipotence,

  211. omnipresence,

  212. omniscience.

  213. Those are things that we as humans

  214. have no idea about.

  215. We can't touch them.

  216. Only the person of God

  217. possesses those attributes.

  218. And on the flip side,

  219. we have the communicable attributes.

  220. Things like goodness,

  221. love,

  222. mercy.

  223. Those are things that we as humans

  224. can have some taste of in this life,

  225. though we don't perfectly

  226. experience all those things all the time,

  227. obviously.

  228. And how do we relate this to the idea

  229. that God is one?

  230. It means that

  231. every attribute of God

  232. is true of God

  233. all the time.

  234. And to give you an example,

  235. those of you who do read your Bibles,

  236. unlike us,

  237. God is his attributes.

  238. God is love.

  239. He doesn't just occasionally act a certain way.

  240. He is those things.

  241. Example,

  242. God is love.

  243. 1 John 4.8

  244. God is a consuming fire.

  245. Hebrews 12.29

  246. God is holy.

  247. Psalm 99.9

  248. verse 9.

  249. So,

  250. when God demonstrates

  251. his love,

  252. he doesn't cease to be

  253. just and holy

  254. when he does that.

  255. And how many of you do that

  256. when you read the scripture?

  257. You say,

  258. here God is displaying his love,

  259. but he is not being merciful.

  260. Or,

  261. here God is

  262. displaying his holiness,

  263. and so he can't be loving.

  264. Y'all do that?

  265. Like,

  266. he just destroyed

  267. 3,000 people.

  268. So,

  269. this surely is just a demonstration

  270. of God's wrath

  271. and God's holiness.

  272. And I'm not telling you

  273. not to do that.

  274. But,

  275. here's what you need to understand.

  276. In those situations,

  277. God did not cease to be

  278. one of his other attributes.

  279. Example,

  280. we read

  281. sections in

  282. the Old Testament

  283. where we see God

  284. judging the nation of Israel

  285. or judging other

  286. people groups

  287. and he,

  288. you know,

  289. annihilates a large number of them.

  290. Well,

  291. in that moment,

  292. we're tempted to think

  293. in that

  294. he is just

  295. displaying his wrath.

  296. But,

  297. he didn't cease to be

  298. a loving God

  299. in that moment.

  300. Let me explain.

  301. Is it a loving thing

  302. to allow

  303. sin and evil

  304. to flourish

  305. and to go on

  306. conquering the world?

  307. It's not.

  308. So,

  309. God destroys it.

  310. So,

  311. in that same act,

  312. God was loving

  313. and he was just

  314. in the same act.

  315. Right?

  316. And,

  317. obviously,

  318. the greatest display

  319. of this is the cross.

  320. And we know that.

  321. So,

  322. when we're thinking about it,

  323. it means that God's attributes

  324. are so connected,

  325. so intertwined,

  326. that he's not separated.

  327. his attributes

  328. are these little

  329. individual components

  330. that we bring together

  331. and that are held together

  332. by a divine superglue,

  333. if you would.

  334. They're not

  335. different components.

  336. It means that

  337. God's goodness

  338. is his justice

  339. and his justice

  340. is his goodness.

  341. Get your head around that.

  342. So,

  343. we want to chop him up

  344. to understand him.

  345. And why do we do that?

  346. It's probably because

  347. none of us can bear,

  348. like,

  349. on our soul

  350. all of who God is

  351. at one time.

  352. So,

  353. he accommodates us

  354. in terms of attributes.

  355. He breaks himself down

  356. in order to show us

  357. who he is,

  358. which is such mercy

  359. on his part.

  360. He can't,

  361. we can't take

  362. all of him

  363. at one time.

  364. As he said later on

  365. to Moses in Exodus 33,

  366. when Moses said,

  367. show me your glory,

  368. Moses said,

  369. I will make,

  370. or God said,

  371. I'll make my goodness

  372. pass before you,

  373. but my face

  374. you cannot see.

  375. No man

  376. can see me

  377. and live.

  378. So,

  379. I can show you

  380. my mercy

  381. and show you

  382. my goodness,

  383. but you can't

  384. fully take

  385. all of who I am.

  386. And so,

  387. you can't bear it

  388. on your soul

  389. or otherwise

  390. it would kill you.

  391. So,

  392. every attribute

  393. of God

  394. is completely

  395. true of God

  396. all the time.

  397. It's so unlike us.

  398. Augustine wrote,

  399. what is my God?

  400. What I ask

  401. but the Lord God.

  402. For who is the Lord

  403. but the Lord himself?

  404. Or who is God

  405. besides our God?

  406. Lord God,

  407. you are stable

  408. yet not supported.

  409. Unchangeable

  410. yet changing

  411. all things.

  412. Never new

  413. yet never old.

  414. Making all things

  415. new

  416. yet bringing

  417. old age

  418. upon the proud

  419. and they know it not.

  420. Always working

  421. yet ever

  422. at rest.

  423. Gathering

  424. but yet needing

  425. nothing.

  426. that's

  427. just a

  428. tiny picture

  429. again

  430. of just how

  431. great our God

  432. is.

  433. So,

  434. he has

  435. accommodated us.

  436. He has

  437. broken himself

  438. down for us

  439. to understand

  440. in his grace.

  441. Kind of like

  442. how a ray of light

  443. comes through

  444. a window

  445. and we

  446. have to

  447. it breaks

  448. itself up

  449. into different

  450. colors

  451. so we can

  452. understand

  453. and see it.

  454. Tiny example.

  455. that everything

  456. in the scripture

  457. from the

  458. tabernacle

  459. to the

  460. temple

  461. is some

  462. sort of

  463. prism

  464. of God

  465. showing us

  466. who he

  467. is.

  468. Breaking

  469. himself

  470. down

  471. for our

  472. finite

  473. minds

  474. to

  475. understand.

  476. Job

  477. said,

  478. Behold,

  479. these are

  480. but the

  481. outskirts

  482. of his

  483. ways

  484. and how

  485. small

  486. a whisper

  487. do we

  488. hear of

  489. him

  490. but the

  491. thunder

  492. of his

  493. power

  494. who can

  495. understand.

  496. God

  497. is one.

  498. That's

  499. one thing

  500. we can

  501. draw

  502. a

  503. conclusion

  504. from

  505. by

  506. God's

  507. name.

  508. Secondly,

  509. we know

  510. that

  511. God is

  512. saying

  513. I am

  514. eternal.

  515. God

  516. is

  517. eternal.

  518. I

  519. am

  520. who

  521. I

  522. am.

  523. I

  524. will

  525. be

  526. what

  527. I

  528. will

  529. be.

  530. I

  531. am

  532. eternal

  533. meaning

  534. that

  535. he

  536. always

  537. has

  538. and

  539. he

  540. will

  541. always

  542. exist.

  543. God

  544. said to

  545. the

  546. apostle

  547. John,

  548. I

  549. am

  550. the

  551. alpha,

  552. the

  553. omega,

  554. says

  555. the

  556. Lord

  557. God

  558. who

  559. is

  560. and

  561. who

  562. was

  563. and

  564. who

  565. is

  566. to

  567. come

  568. the

  569. almighty.

  570. So the

  571. first and

  572. last letters

  573. of

  574. the

  575. Greek

  576. alphabet

  577. saying

  578. that

  579. the

  580. living

  581. God

  582. encompasses

  583. all

  584. things.

  585. He

  586. has

  587. no

  588. beginning

  589. and

  590. he

  591. has

  592. no

  593. end.

  594. Again,

  595. he

  596. doesn't

  597. live in

  598. the

  599. confides

  600. of

  601. time

  602. like

  603. we

  604. do.

  605. He

  606. doesn't

  607. need a

  608. watch

  609. to

  610. understand

  611. what's

  612. happening

  613. in

  614. his

  615. universe.

  616. Successions

  617. of time

  618. are for

  619. us.

  620. He

  621. is not

  622. bound

  623. by

  624. time.

  625. He

  626. sees

  627. the

  628. past,

  629. the

  630. present,

  631. and the

  632. future

  633. as

  634. clearly

  635. as you

  636. and I

  637. see the

  638. present.

  639. It's all

  640. before him.

  641. He is

  642. eternal.

  643. I am

  644. who I

  645. am.

  646. No

  647. one

  648. created

  649. me

  650. and

  651. no

  652. one

  653. has

  654. the

  655. power

  656. to do

  657. what

  658. I

  659. do.

  660. I

  661. exist.

  662. No

  663. one

  664. shapes

  665. my

  666. personality.

  667. I

  668. have

  669. no

  670. beginning

  671. and I

  672. have

  673. no

  674. end.

  675. And

  676. Moses

  677. understood

  678. this.

  679. prayed in

  680. Psalm

    Psalms 90:2

  681. 90

  682. verse 2,

  683. before the

  684. mountains

  685. were brought

  686. forth,

  687. or you

  688. had formed

  689. the earth

  690. and the

  691. world,

  692. from

  693. everlasting

  694. to

  695. everlasting,

  696. you

  697. are God.

  698. So

  699. all of us

  700. will come

  701. and go

  702. as

  703. generations

  704. before us

  705. have,

  706. but God

  707. will remain.

  708. It's

  709. good.

  710. We can

  711. hang our

  712. hat on

  713. that.

  714. God

  715. is not

  716. going

  717. anywhere.

  718. He

  719. is

  720. eternal.

  721. Thirdly,

  722. God

  723. is saying

  724. that He

  725. is,

  726. pick the

  727. word you

  728. want to

  729. use,

  730. unchangeable

  731. or

  732. immutable.

  733. The

  734. word,

  735. our God

  736. is

  737. unchanging.

  738. I

  739. am

  740. who I

  741. am.

  742. Connected

  743. to this

  744. is God

  745. saying I

  746. am

  747. unchangeable.

  748. I

  749. don't

  750. change.

  751. God

  752. forever

  753. remains

  754. the same

  755. in His

  756. nature,

  757. His

  758. person,

  759. His

  760. mission,

  761. His

  762. purposes,

  763. His

  764. promises,

  765. they all

  766. remain the

  767. same at

  768. all time.

  769. That's

  770. such a

  771. comfort.

  772. It's

  773. just He's

  774. saying to

  775. Moses,

  776. I can't

  777. be anything

  778. other than

  779. what I

  780. am.

  781. I am

  782. God.

  783. Some of

  784. the old

  785. writers used

  786. to say

  787. this means

  788. that there

  789. is no

  790. potential

  791. in God.

  792. He

  793. can't

  794. improve

  795. Himself.

  796. He

  797. can't

  798. pick up

  799. the slack

  800. and become

  801. something

  802. different.

  803. There's

  804. no

  805. potential

  806. in God.

  807. He

  808. fully

  809. fills

  810. His

  811. potential

  812. at

  813. all

  814. times.

  815. He

  816. said in

  817. Malachi,

  818. I am

  819. the Lord

  820. and I

  821. do not

  822. change.

  823. There's

  824. no

  825. force

  826. or

  827. influence

  828. out

  829. here

  830. that

  831. can

  832. come

  833. against

  834. me

  835. and

  836. make

  837. me

  838. be

  839. different

  840. than

  841. who

  842. I

  843. am.

  844. That's

  845. encouraging.

  846. We're

  847. not like

  848. that at

  849. all.

  850. We

  851. change

  852. daily.

  853. Our

  854. attitudes,

  855. our

  856. actions,

  857. our

  858. motivations.

  859. I'm

  860. sure many

  861. of us

  862. can say

  863. something

  864. like,

  865. do you

  866. remember

  867. so-and-so?

  868. She used

  869. to be

  870. such a

  871. kind

  872. and

  873. loving

  874. person,

  875. but when

  876. this

  877. tragedy

  878. happened,

  879. she became

  880. sad and

  881. angry and

  882. bitter.

  883. We

  884. change

  885. and not

  886. always for

  887. the good.

  888. And as I

  889. said before,

  890. it isn't that

  891. God just

  892. has goodness

  893. and has

  894. justice.

  895. He is

  896. goodness

  897. and he

  898. is

  899. justice.

  900. So,

  901. thankful again

  902. in James

  903. 1-7,

  904. there is

  905. no

  906. variation

  907. or shadow

  908. due to

  909. change in

  910. relationship

  911. to God.

  912. He promises

  913. to us that

  914. he remains

  915. the same.

  916. So we

  917. can take

  918. him at

  919. his word.

  920. When he

  921. says

  922. something,

  923. he is

  924. true.

  925. He's

  926. not going

  927. to change

  928. his mind.

  929. It's

  930. something that

  931. many of us

  932. are used

  933. to.

  934. We're used

  935. to being

  936. deceived,

  937. lied to,

  938. and we've

  939. also deceived

  940. and lied

  941. to other

  942. people.

  943. But if

  944. God is

  945. unchangeable,

  946. his promises

  947. and his

  948. purposes,

  949. we can

  950. always rely

  951. on.

  952. So,

  953. fourthly,

  954. when God

  955. says,

  956. I am

  957. who I

  958. am,

  959. we can

  960. clearly see

  961. that God

  962. is independent

  963. or self-existing.

  964. God

  965. doesn't need

  966. us or

  967. any other

  968. part of

  969. creation to

  970. be who

  971. he is.

  972. That's a

  973. misconception

  974. in our

  975. modern day.

  976. We feel

  977. like God

  978. created us

  979. because he

  980. was lonely

  981. or because

  982. he was

  983. bored or

  984. he needed

  985. something to

  986. do up

  987. in heaven.

  988. Not so.

  989. And he

  990. gives Moses

  991. this,

  992. I guess,

  993. tiny,

  994. tiny example

  995. of the

  996. burning

  997. bush.

  998. And

  999. as it's

  1000. saying,

  1001. there's

  1002. nothing I

  1003. can provide

  1004. for you

  1005. by way

  1006. of analogy

  1007. to describe

  1008. who I

  1009. am and

  1010. the very

  1011. essence of

  1012. my being.

  1013. God

  1014. needs

  1015. nothing,

  1016. but we

  1017. can enjoy

  1018. him and we

  1019. can glorify

  1020. him and he

  1021. delights in

  1022. that.

  1023. But this

  1024. fire that

  1025. was in

  1026. the bush,

  1027. we see that

  1028. it was a

  1029. very pure

  1030. fire.

  1031. It wasn't

  1032. made up of a

  1033. lot of different

  1034. compounds to make

  1035. a fire.

  1036. It just

  1037. existed.

  1038. No other

  1039. energy sources.

  1040. It just

  1041. had energy

  1042. in itself.

  1043. And God

  1044. was,

  1045. again,

  1046. trying to give

  1047. him just a

  1048. picture of

  1049. this is

  1050. kind of how

  1051. I am.

  1052. And even

  1053. just with

  1054. that,

  1055. Moses hid

  1056. his face

  1057. from God

  1058. in that

  1059. response.

  1060. But we're

  1061. messed up to

  1062. think that

  1063. God needs

  1064. us.

  1065. In Acts

  1066. 17,

  1067. the Apostle

  1068. Paul,

  1069. when he

  1070. was in

  1071. Athens,

  1072. he said,

  1073. the God

  1074. who made

  1075. the world

  1076. and everything

  1077. in it,

  1078. being the

  1079. Lord of

  1080. heaven and

  1081. earth,

  1082. does not

  1083. live in

  1084. temples made

  1085. by man,

  1086. nor is he

  1087. served with

  1088. human hands

  1089. as though he

  1090. needed anything,

  1091. since he

  1092. himself gives

  1093. to all

  1094. mankind life

  1095. and breath

  1096. and everything.

  1097. So,

  1098. God exists

  1099. freely and

  1100. independent from

  1101. any other

  1102. part of

  1103. his

  1104. creation.

  1105. So,

  1106. from

  1107. eternity

  1108. past

  1109. into

  1110. eternity

  1111. future,

  1112. Father,

  1113. Son,

  1114. and Holy

  1115. Spirit

  1116. lived in

  1117. perfect

  1118. completeness,

  1119. joy,

  1120. and unity

  1121. with each

  1122. other.

  1123. Perfect

  1124. satisfaction.

  1125. If you

  1126. glance later

  1127. on,

  1128. go back and

  1129. look at

  1130. John 17

  1131. that we

  1132. preached

  1133. through a

  1134. long time

  1135. ago,

  1136. but Jesus

  1137. prayed to

  1138. the Father,

  1139. God

  1140. said,

  1141. I'm

  1142. praying for

  1143. those

  1144. whom you

  1145. have given

  1146. me,

  1147. that they

  1148. may be

  1149. with me

  1150. one day

  1151. to see

  1152. your glory,

  1153. the glory

  1154. that I

  1155. shared with

  1156. you before

  1157. the world

  1158. existed.

  1159. Such joy

  1160. and

  1161. completeness

  1162. in the

  1163. Godhead.

  1164. So,

  1165. God didn't

  1166. create us

  1167. out of

  1168. some

  1169. dependence,

  1170. but

  1171. out of

  1172. an overflow,

  1173. an abundance

  1174. of his

  1175. glory and

  1176. excellence.

  1177. So,

  1178. again,

  1179. I've just

  1180. been reading

  1181. Augustine a

  1182. lot lately

  1183. for some

  1184. reason,

  1185. but he

  1186. said,

  1187. what would

  1188. have been

  1189. lacking in

  1190. your goodness,

  1191. God,

  1192. which you

  1193. yourself are,

  1194. even if

  1195. these things

  1196. of creation

  1197. had never

  1198. existed and

  1199. had remained

  1200. unformed?

  1201. You didn't

  1202. create them

  1203. out of any

  1204. lack,

  1205. but out of

  1206. an abundance

  1207. of your

  1208. goodness.

  1209. You

  1210. ordered them

  1211. and turned

  1212. them toward

  1213. form,

  1214. but not

  1215. because your

  1216. joy had to

  1217. be perfected

  1218. by them.

  1219. Really

  1220. incredible

  1221. thought that

  1222. though God

  1223. doesn't need

  1224. us,

  1225. he created

  1226. us,

  1227. and he,

  1228. it's good

  1229. for us,

  1230. he takes

  1231. delight in

  1232. us living

  1233. for him.

  1234. He can

  1235. take delight

  1236. in his

  1237. creation,

  1238. even though

  1239. he doesn't

  1240. need us.

  1241. So,

  1242. I could

  1243. go on and

  1244. say that,

  1245. what's that

  1246. famous quote

  1247. that we

  1248. always throw

  1249. up there,

  1250. everything in

  1251. the universe

  1252. plugs into

  1253. God,

  1254. and if he

  1255. shut down,

  1256. there would

  1257. be absolute

  1258. nothingness.

  1259. He doesn't

  1260. need us.

  1261. And

  1262. fifthly,

  1263. and lastly,

  1264. God is

  1265. saying by

  1266. saying,

  1267. I am who

  1268. I am,

  1269. it's

  1270. implying that

  1271. God is the

  1272. creator and

  1273. sustainer.

  1274. He's the

  1275. creator and

  1276. sustainer,

  1277. inexhaustible

  1278. source of

  1279. divine power

  1280. and energy.

  1281. That's what

  1282. omnipotence

  1283. means,

  1284. all powerful,

  1285. possessing all

  1286. power.

  1287. So,

  1288. it isn't just

  1289. that God

  1290. has a lot

  1291. of power,

  1292. and then

  1293. there's all

  1294. these other

  1295. small powers

  1296. that exist

  1297. outside of

  1298. him.

  1299. It means

  1300. that he

  1301. gives them

  1302. power.

  1303. He delegates

  1304. that power,

  1305. and if he

  1306. was to take

  1307. it away,

  1308. they would

  1309. cease to

  1310. exist.

  1311. Christ.

  1312. So,

  1313. even the

  1314. very breath

  1315. that we

  1316. breathe right

  1317. now is

  1318. a gift of

  1319. God's

  1320. sustaining

  1321. power in

  1322. our lives.

  1323. Every

  1324. heartbeat,

  1325. a gift of

  1326. grace to

  1327. us.

  1328. In

  1329. Isaiah

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  1330. chapter 40,

  1331. God says,

  1332. have you

  1333. not known,

  1334. have you

  1335. not heard?

  1336. The Lord

  1337. God,

  1338. the everlasting

  1339. God,

  1340. the creator

  1341. of the ends

  1342. of the

  1343. earth,

  1344. he does

  1345. not faint

  1346. or grow

  1347. weary.

  1348. His

  1349. understanding

  1350. is unsearchable.

  1351. He gives

  1352. power to

  1353. the faint,

  1354. and to him

  1355. who has no

  1356. might,

  1357. he increases

  1358. strength.

  1359. So,

  1360. God,

  1361. by his own

  1362. power,

  1363. upholds all

  1364. the universe

  1365. and sustains

  1366. us,

  1367. and all

  1368. energy,

  1369. all power

  1370. outside of

  1371. that,

  1372. finds its

  1373. source,

  1374. in him.

  1375. He is

  1376. the source

  1377. of all

  1378. power.

  1379. So,

  1380. he sustains

  1381. us.

  1382. Isn't that

  1383. just crazy

  1384. to think

  1385. about,

  1386. that you're

  1387. going to

  1388. walk out

  1389. of here

  1390. today by

  1391. his

  1392. sustaining

  1393. power,

  1394. that you're

  1395. going to

  1396. go on

  1397. this week

  1398. and do

  1399. this or

  1400. that because

  1401. of his

  1402. grace and

  1403. his

  1404. sustaining

  1405. power.

  1406. He doesn't

  1407. need to be

  1408. recharged or

  1409. backed up.

  1410. He is the

  1411. source of

  1412. all our

  1413. strength.

  1414. So,

  1415. those five

  1416. things we

  1417. can draw.

  1418. There may

  1419. be more,

  1420. but those

  1421. things we

  1422. can definitely

  1423. see when

  1424. God says,

  1425. I am who

  1426. I am.

  1427. I will

  1428. be who I

  1429. will be.

  1430. So,

  1431. some application

  1432. for us.

  1433. As we've

  1434. been talking

  1435. about,

  1436. most all

  1437. of us are

  1438. aware of

  1439. our need

  1440. for a

  1441. great and

  1442. powerful

  1443. almighty

  1444. God.

  1445. this journey

  1446. probably began

  1447. for me in

  1448. 2006 when

  1449. I was in

  1450. the hospital

  1451. in Atlanta

  1452. and I

  1453. received news

  1454. that I

  1455. was a

  1456. lot sicker,

  1457. more sicker,

  1458. not the right

  1459. phrase,

  1460. that I was

  1461. not doing as

  1462. well as I

  1463. thought I

  1464. was.

  1465. they had

  1466. been running

  1467. some of my

  1468. tests wrong.

  1469. And so,

  1470. I was about

  1471. to go home.

  1472. My bags were

  1473. packed.

  1474. I was getting

  1475. ready to leave

  1476. and my doctor

  1477. came in and

  1478. he pulled out

  1479. the papers and

  1480. he said,

  1481. let me just

  1482. look at

  1483. something really

  1484. quick.

  1485. And he

  1486. did some

  1487. math and

  1488. he showed

  1489. me,

  1490. like,

  1491. they haven't

  1492. been doing

  1493. this right.

  1494. Like,

  1495. your lung

  1496. function is

  1497. actually a lot

  1498. lower than

  1499. we think it

  1500. is.

  1501. you thought

  1502. it was.

  1503. And so,

  1504. he said,

  1505. I need you

  1506. to stay

  1507. another week

  1508. so we can

  1509. work on

  1510. this.

  1511. And at

  1512. that point,

  1513. that's when I

  1514. realized there

  1515. was a lot

  1516. other suffering

  1517. that was ahead.

  1518. And in my

  1519. hospital room,

  1520. I had the

  1521. Bible and

  1522. I also had

  1523. Arthur Pink's

  1524. Attributes of

  1525. God book.

  1526. And that's

  1527. the two things

  1528. I just kept

  1529. storing in my

  1530. head.

  1531. So,

  1532. this isn't

  1533. cool,

  1534. nerdy,

  1535. theology.

  1536. This is

  1537. truth for

  1538. your real

  1539. life.

  1540. It's truth

  1541. for life

  1542. and truth

  1543. for death

  1544. for you

  1545. to live

  1546. in.

  1547. We all

  1548. need a

  1549. powerful,

  1550. sovereign

  1551. God.

  1552. So,

  1553. strive to

  1554. know God

  1555. as he

  1556. is and

  1557. realize it's

  1558. so hard.

  1559. Your feelings

  1560. and your

  1561. emotions don't

  1562. affect the

  1563. person of

  1564. God.

  1565. So hard

  1566. to not do

  1567. that.

  1568. Meditate

  1569. on the

  1570. person of

  1571. God in

  1572. his word

  1573. and allow

  1574. it to

  1575. enhance

  1576. your

  1577. awe

  1578. and your

  1579. wonder

  1580. of him,

  1581. your

  1582. worship

  1583. of him,

  1584. and strive

  1585. to know

  1586. Jesus

  1587. Christ,

  1588. who said

  1589. in John

    John 8:57

  1590. 8,

  1591. verse 57,

  1592. he was

  1593. facing a

  1594. hostile crowd.

  1595. They were

  1596. questioning

  1597. him.

  1598. so the

  1599. Jews said

  1600. to him,

  1601. you are

  1602. not 50

  1603. years old

  1604. and yet

  1605. you say

  1606. you have

  1607. seen

  1608. Abraham.

  1609. And Jesus

  1610. responded to

  1611. them,

  1612. truly,

  1613. truly,

  1614. I say

  1615. to you,

  1616. before

  1617. Abraham

  1618. ever

  1619. existed,

  1620. I am.

  1621. And he

  1622. used that

  1623. name of

  1624. God,

  1625. like I

  1626. existed

  1627. before

  1628. Abraham.

  1629. And as

  1630. expected,

  1631. they didn't

  1632. like that.

  1633. I am

  1634. Yahweh.

  1635. So in

  1636. Jesus,

  1637. the God

  1638. man,

  1639. God

  1640. accommodated

  1641. himself in

  1642. the greatest

  1643. way possible.

  1644. If you

  1645. see Jesus,

  1646. you have

  1647. seen the

  1648. Father.

  1649. As you

  1650. have received

  1651. Jesus,

  1652. you have

  1653. received

  1654. the

  1655. Father.

  1656. God

  1657. has drawn

  1658. near to

  1659. us in

  1660. the person

  1661. of Christ

  1662. for us

  1663. to know

  1664. who he

  1665. is.

  1666. Beginning

  1667. of John's

  1668. gospel,

  1669. we have

  1670. seen his

  1671. glory.

  1672. So strive

  1673. to know

  1674. Christ.

  1675. Flip over,

  1676. again,

  1677. I don't

  1678. know if

  1679. this is

  1680. planned,

  1681. but

  1682. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1683. chapter

  1684. 1.

  1685. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1686. chapter

  1687. 1,

  1688. we can

  1689. see it

  1690. in just

  1691. verse 15.

  1692. He,

  1693. being

  1694. Jesus,

  1695. is the

  1696. image of

  1697. the

  1698. invisible

  1699. God,

  1700. the

  1701. firstborn

  1702. of all

  1703. creation.

  1704. For by

  1705. him,

  1706. all things

  1707. were created

  1708. in heaven

  1709. and on

  1710. earth,

  1711. visible

  1712. and invisible.

  1713. Whether

  1714. thrones or

  1715. dominions or

  1716. rulers or

  1717. authorities,

  1718. all things

  1719. were created

  1720. through him

  1721. and for

  1722. him.

  1723. He is

  1724. before all

  1725. things and

  1726. in him

  1727. all things

  1728. hold

  1729. together.

  1730. You see

  1731. some of

  1732. that?

  1733. He is

  1734. the creator.

  1735. He is

  1736. the ruler.

  1737. He is

  1738. the

  1739. sustainer.

  1740. We see

  1741. that all

  1742. in these

  1743. verses.

  1744. And he

  1745. became

  1746. before

  1747. anything

  1748. else

  1749. came.

  1750. He is

  1751. the head

  1752. of the

  1753. body,

  1754. the church.

  1755. He is

  1756. the beginning,

  1757. the firstborn

  1758. from the

  1759. dead,

  1760. that in

  1761. everything

  1762. he might

  1763. be

  1764. preeminent.

  1765. For in

  1766. him all

  1767. the fullness

  1768. of God

  1769. was pleased

  1770. to dwell

  1771. and through

  1772. him to

  1773. reconcile

  1774. all things

  1775. whether on

  1776. earth or

  1777. in heaven

  1778. making peace

  1779. by the

  1780. blood of

  1781. his cross.

  1782. And there

  1783. it's this

  1784. idea of

  1785. Christ bringing

  1786. together

  1787. everything

  1788. that's been

  1789. breaking

  1790. apart by

  1791. sin.

  1792. And it's

  1793. also this

  1794. idea of a

  1795. reckoning,

  1796. not just

  1797. like to

  1798. bring together

  1799. reconcile,

  1800. but a

  1801. reckoning.

  1802. We see

  1803. that Jesus

  1804. is those

  1805. things.

  1806. So if we

  1807. want to

  1808. know the

  1809. person of

  1810. God,

  1811. we look

  1812. at the

  1813. Son of

  1814. God.

  1815. and he

  1816. shows us

  1817. who he

  1818. is.

  1819. Isn't

  1820. it

  1821. interesting,

  1822. just in

  1823. closing,

  1824. that many

  1825. of our

  1826. modern day

  1827. books and

  1828. stories that

  1829. are out

  1830. there about

  1831. people

  1832. encountering

  1833. the person

  1834. of God

  1835. have nothing

  1836. at all in

  1837. relationship to

  1838. Scripture.

  1839. People are

  1840. like, oh,

  1841. it was just

  1842. a happy

  1843. moment,

  1844. just me

  1845. and God.

  1846. So not

  1847. what the

  1848. testimony of

  1849. Scripture

  1850. is.

  1851. You see

  1852. that Moses

  1853. was terrified.

  1854. We know

  1855. that in

  1856. all three

  1857. Gospels,

  1858. Matthew,

  1859. Mark,

  1860. and John,

  1861. there's the,

  1862. not John,

  1863. but Matthew,

  1864. Mark,

  1865. and Luke,

  1866. where Jesus

  1867. is transfigured

  1868. before them.

  1869. Matthew and

  1870. Mark say

  1871. that they

  1872. were terrified,

  1873. which actually

  1874. means scared

  1875. out of their

  1876. wits in

  1877. Greek,

  1878. scared out of

  1879. their mind

  1880. when they

  1881. saw this

  1882. transfiguration.

  1883. And then in

  1884. Luke's gospel,

  1885. it implies

  1886. that they

  1887. were like

  1888. in a deep

  1889. sleep.

  1890. And could

  1891. it be

  1892. possible that

  1893. it just

  1894. describes the

  1895. sheer exhaustion

  1896. they had

  1897. of encountering

  1898. this scene,

  1899. overwhelmed,

  1900. put on the

  1901. ground,

  1902. where they

  1903. lost all

  1904. their strength.

  1905. And we

  1906. know that

  1907. John,

  1908. who calls

  1909. himself the

  1910. beloved

  1911. disciple,

  1912. the same

  1913. guy who

  1914. Jesus,

  1915. he rested

  1916. his head

  1917. on the

  1918. shoulder of

  1919. Christ.

  1920. Same

  1921. disciple.

  1922. At the

  1923. beginning of

  1924. Revelation,

  1925. he is

  1926. terrified and

  1927. cannot even

  1928. look at

  1929. the Son of

  1930. God.

  1931. So we

  1932. have to

  1933. come to

  1934. the Scripture

  1935. to know

  1936. the person

  1937. of God.

  1938. We have to

  1939. pray that

  1940. God applies

  1941. his truth to

  1942. our hearts

  1943. and our

  1944. lives.

  1945. But I

  1946. pray that

  1947. just seeing

  1948. how big our

  1949. God truly

  1950. is,

  1951. is convicting

  1952. to you,

  1953. maybe even

  1954. scares you.

  1955. I don't

  1956. know where

  1957. you are.

  1958. You might

  1959. need to be

  1960. scared out

  1961. of your

  1962. wits.

  1963. Or you

  1964. might need

  1965. to be

  1966. encouraged

  1967. that such

  1968. a God

  1969. stands on

  1970. your behalf

  1971. and that

  1972. you are

  1973. made right

  1974. with him

  1975. through the

  1976. person of

  1977. Christ.

  1978. So we

  1979. can stand

  1980. boldly

  1981. because of

  1982. who God

  1983. is.

  1984. Praise him.

  1985. Let's pray

  1986. together.
