  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and join me in 2 Peter chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  2. I believe that we can get the answers with all of their complexities and all of their applications worked out in our minds to these three questions.

  3. We will have a firm foundation on which to build a life that is pleasing to God.

  4. I settled in on these three questions after being asked a question many years ago.

  5. A man that was a missionary, many of you know, Jay Whetstone, asked me over tea at his house one afternoon,

  6. what do you hope to accomplish with college students in their three to four years in Dahlonega?

  7. And I didn't really have an answer.

  8. I could have begun to talk through some things.

  9. I mean, there was stuff on my mind, oh, well, we want students to do the following.

  10. But what he was asking was, what's your plan?

  11. Is there a system in place for young people when they come and give you some of their time while they're at school in Dahlonega?

  12. So I didn't have a confident answer, but I knew that I should.

  13. There should be some things, some anchors that I would say, yes, we want to make sure that college students know certain things.

  14. And so in rolling that around and considering most important things, I kind of settled in on these three questions,

  15. which we answer all the time around here.

  16. This is not the first time we've taken up these questions.

  17. But I thought it would be helpful for us to do so systematically over the next three weeks.

  18. And those questions are, what is the Bible?

  19. What is the Bible?

  20. What is the Bible?

  21. And what is the church?

  22. And there's so much confusion about the answer to these three questions.

  23. You may think already, oh, I know the answer to those three questions.

  24. You may find that you don't.

  25. I knew that if we could get answers to these three questions concreted in the minds of college students or anyone for that matter,

  26. we would be doing quite well together as a church.

  27. And so we've been about that.

  28. We weave the answers to these questions in and out of all sorts of things that we do.

  29. But specifically, I want to stop and think about these things before we get back to our normal verse-by-verse exposition of a book of the Bible.

  30. So the question that I want to ask and answer, at least in part, right, with the best of my ability, my frailty this morning,

  31. what is the Bible?

  32. And I want to look largely at 2 Peter 1, verses 16 through 21.

    2 Peter 1:16–21

  33. And we'll look at some other texts as well this morning.

  34. So before I read this, beloved, I want to remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  35. It was written for His glory and our good.

  36. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  37. Peter writes, verse 16,

  38. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  39. but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

  40. For when He received honor and glory from God the Father,

  41. and the voice was born to Him by the majestic glory,

  42. this is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

  43. We ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven,

  44. for we were with Him on the holy mountain.

  45. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed,

  46. to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place

  47. until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

  48. Knowing this, first of all,

  49. that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation,

  50. for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man,

  51. but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  52. What an astounding text.

  53. Let's look at its context a bit before we proceed.

  54. Following Peter's greeting,

  55. Peter tells his readers in chapter 1, verses 3 and 4,

  56. that God's divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness

  57. through the knowledge of Him who has called us to His own glory and excellence,

  58. by which He has granted to us His precious and very great promises,

  59. so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature,

  60. having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desires.

  61. So Peter says to his hearers, those who are in the faith,

  62. we have been granted power for life and godliness through, what?

  63. Through knowledge.

  64. We have been granted precious and very great promises.

  65. His promises made already, given to us,

  66. wherever those promises once made in the Scripture.

  67. We have been granted to become partakers of the divine nature,

  68. and we have escaped from our sin.

  69. By the Scripture, this knowledge that comes to us,

  70. given to us for all things concerning life,

  71. pertaining to life and to godliness.

  72. And he goes on then to instruct his readers

  73. to make their calling and election sure

  74. by pursuing holiness

  75. and seeing that holiness,

  76. the holiness that's being birthed in them as they pursue it,

  77. as evidence of their standing in Jesus Christ.

  78. to make sure they're in the faith,

  79. to be confident of it by pursuing Holy Scripture.

  80. He says in verse 10 and 11,

  81. Therefore, brothers,

  82. be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election,

  83. for if you practice these qualities,

  84. you will never fall.

  85. For in this way there will be richly provided for you

  86. an entrance into the eternal kingdom

  87. of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  88. And so it's in this context that Peter says

  89. in the beginning of verse 16,

  90. For we did not follow cleverly devised myths

  91. when we made known to you the power and coming

  92. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  93. And he goes on to say,

  94. but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

  95. It's a good try, Cheyenne.

  96. It was good.

  97. I thought you had her settled too.

  98. Verse 17,

  99. For when He, being Jesus Christ,

  100. received honor and glory from God the Father,

  101. and the voice was born to Him by the majestic glory,

  102. This is My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  103. We ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven,

  104. for we were with Him on the holy mountain.

  105. And what is Peter referring to?

  106. The transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

  107. When they went up with Him,

  108. James and Peter and John on the mountain,

  109. and Jesus' image was changed,

  110. made more glorious,

  111. they got to see this happen.

  112. And God spoke over Him,

  113. This is My beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.

  114. What an astounding thing to be able to witness.

  115. What an incredible thing that these three men,

  116. the only three in history,

  117. were able to see.

  118. And you can read about that in Mark 9,

  119. 2-7,

  120. Matthew 17,

  121. Luke 9,

  122. they're all accounts of what happened.

  123. It's amazing.

  124. It's an incredible thing

  125. that they were witnesses of.

  126. But then Peter does,

  127. in verse 19,

  128. the most astounding thing.

  129. He says,

  130. And we have the prophetic word

  131. more fully confirmed.

  132. We use, typically,

  133. I think almost all of us are using

  134. the ESV translation of the Bible.

  135. If you have the ESV 2001,

  136. which I do,

  137. and my brain went,

  138. what,

  139. as I copied and pasted out of Lagos,

  140. this text,

  141. ESV 2001 says,

  142. And we have something more sure,

  143. the prophetic word.

  144. We have something more sure,

  145. or we have the prophetic word

  146. more fully confirmed.

  147. Peter is saying,

  148. We have a greater confidence

  149. confidence in the Scripture.

  150. We were with Jesus

  151. on the Mount of Transfiguration.

  152. We heard God speak from heaven,

  153. but we have a greater confidence

  154. in the Bible.

  155. It's incredible.

  156. What an astounding thing

  157. that he is saying.

  158. And it has much bearing for us today.

  159. Oh, wouldn't it have been glorious

  160. to be on the Mount of Transfiguration?

  161. It wouldn't have been grand

  162. to behold such a thing.

  163. Peter says,

  164. We have a more sure thing.

  165. We have a greater confidence

  166. in this text.

  167. My prayer for us this morning

  168. is that we would have

  169. the same kind of confidence

  170. that Peter had in his Bible.

  171. So here's the summary answer

  172. to the question,

  173. What is the Bible

  174. for our consideration this morning?

  175. The Bible is God's

  176. inspired,

  177. inerrant,

  178. authoritative,

  179. clear,

  180. necessary,

  181. and sufficient word

  182. to mankind.

  183. I'm going to break that

  184. into six statements

  185. to make it easier to digest.

  186. And I've included those

  187. on the back of your bulletin

  188. to aid you this morning.

  189. Before I say anything else,

  190. I just want to point out

  191. that I misspelled

  192. the word inerrant,

  193. which I realized too late.

  194. It is spelled

  195. I-N-E-R-R-A-N-T.

  196. And maybe God,

  197. in his providence,

  198. permitted such a thing

  199. so that I can make the point

  200. that he's inerrant

  201. and I am not.

  202. Such creative ways

  203. to keep me very humble.

  204. So, anyway,

  205. now you know how to spell

  206. inerrant properly

  207. and not the way I spelled it.

  208. First,

  209. the Bible is God's

  210. inspired word

  211. to mankind.

  212. The Bible is unlike

  213. any book

  214. ever written.

  215. At the most fundamental level,

  216. it is both

  217. authored by human beings

  218. and by God.

  219. The word Christians

  220. have commonly used

  221. to describe this process

  222. is this word

  223. inspired.

  224. This means that the Bible

  225. is the product

  226. of God inspiring

  227. and using

  228. human authors

  229. to write

  230. his perfect

  231. holy words

  232. without error

  233. or defect.

  234. speaking through

  235. men's

  236. personalities,

  237. through their

  238. circumstance,

  239. and through their

  240. pens.

  241. Two passages

  242. that explicitly tell us

  243. the Bible is God's

  244. inspired word.

  245. First,

  246. 2 Timothy,

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  247. chapter 3,

  248. and verse 16.

  249. Which is,

  250. all scripture is

  251. breathed out

  252. by God.

  253. You may be

  254. familiar with

  255. this.

  256. The Greek word

  257. used there for

  258. breathed out

  259. is actually the word

  260. expired.

  261. Much the way we say

  262. that a person dies

  263. when they expire,

  264. they breathe their

  265. last breath.

  266. The emphasis here

  267. is that it comes

  268. literally from God.

  269. It is God

  270. breathed.

  271. And where we pull

  272. the word inspired

  273. is breathed

  274. into.

  275. God breathed out

  276. but into

  277. men who

  278. pin down

  279. his

  280. very

  281. words.

  282. The second text

  283. text is from

  284. our text this

  285. morning.

  286. 2 Peter,

    2 Peter 1:20

  287. chapter 1,

  288. verse 20 and

  289. 21.

  290. Peter says,

  291. knowing this,

  292. first of all,

  293. that no prophecy

  294. of scripture

  295. comes from

  296. someone's own

  297. interpretation,

  298. for no prophecy

  299. was ever produced

  300. by the will of

  301. men,

  302. but men spoke

  303. from God

  304. as they were

  305. carried along

  306. by the Holy Spirit,

  307. as they were

  308. inspired to write.

  309. the Bible

  310. originated

  311. not with the

  312. will of its

  313. human writers,

  314. but with the

  315. will of God

  316. the Holy Spirit.

  317. Over 3,000

  318. times,

  319. biblical writers

  320. claim to have

  321. received their

  322. messages from

  323. God.

  324. God the Holy

  325. Spirit

  326. inspired,

  327. breathed out,

  328. or originated

  329. the scriptures

  330. through human

  331. writers.

  332. So to be

  333. clear,

  334. this does not

  335. mean that God

  336. dictated the

  337. Bible to its

  338. human authors,

  339. right?

  340. That he spoke

  341. in all cases

  342. audibly,

  343. and they just

  344. pinned down

  345. exactly what he

  346. said.

  347. In some cases,

  348. this is the way

  349. we receive the

  350. text.

  351. But rather,

  352. they wrote

  353. with their own

  354. creativity,

  355. and in their

  356. own styles,

  357. and their own

  358. vocabulary,

  359. accomplishing all

  360. along exactly

  361. what God wanted

  362. them to accomplish.

  363. The word

  364. carried along

  365. in 2 Peter

  366. is the same

  367. word used to

  368. describe Paul's

  369. ship in Acts

  370. that's carried

  371. along by the

  372. storm,

  373. and then he's

  374. shipwrecked,

  375. and there's a

  376. wind that drove

  377. them outside of

  378. their course.

  379. A ship has

  380. sails to catch

  381. the wind,

  382. a keel to

  383. prevent it from

  384. tipping over,

  385. a rudder to

  386. steer it to

  387. some degree,

  388. but ultimately,

  389. a ship goes

  390. where the wind

  391. carries it.

  392. So, this is

  393. our understanding

  394. of the

  395. Scripture being

  396. inspired,

  397. given to us

  398. by God

  399. Himself.

  400. And there's a

  401. lot of doubt

  402. in our day

  403. about this.

  404. How do we

  405. know?

  406. How do we

  407. know that the

  408. very copy you

  409. have before you

  410. is God's

  411. inspired word

  412. to mankind?

  413. I want to make

  414. briefly,

  415. I hope,

  416. for you,

  417. an argument

  418. for the

  419. Old Testament

  420. and an

  421. argument for

  422. the New.

  423. As I'm doing

  424. this, if your

  425. brain is panicking

  426. because of the

  427. length of the

  428. definition I gave

  429. you, we're

  430. going to move

  431. much more

  432. quickly through

  433. some of those

  434. other doctrines

  435. of Scripture.

  436. But this one I

  437. think we need

  438. to spend some

  439. time on to

  440. make sure that

  441. we can get

  442. God's inspiration

  443. of His word.

  444. So, an argument

  445. for the Old

  446. Testament.

  447. The Lord

  448. Jesus Christ,

  449. the one who

  450. we say to be

  451. followers of,

  452. validated the

  453. Old Testament's

  454. inspiration by

  455. quoting from

  456. all three

  457. sections.

  458. The law,

  459. the prophets,

  460. and the

  461. writings.

  462. Commonly

  463. understood Hebrew

  464. categories for

  465. the Old

  466. Testament.

  467. He endorsed

  468. the inspiration

  469. and authority

  470. of the Old

  471. Testament in

  472. detail.

  473. We've studied

  474. through the

  475. Sermon on the

  476. Mount,

  477. Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:17

  478. verse 17,

  479. 18.

  480. He elevates

  481. it.

  482. He doesn't

  483. do away

  484. with it,

  485. but He

  486. helps us

  487. to properly

  488. understand it.

  489. And the

  490. Old Testament

  491. promises are

  492. made,

  493. and the

  494. New Testament

  495. promises are

  496. fulfilled.

  497. We get the

  498. proper lens

  499. by which to

  500. view the

  501. Old Testament

  502. through.

  503. We don't

  504. discard it,

  505. but we

  506. continue to

  507. pick it up

  508. and understand

  509. it through

  510. the lens

  511. of Jesus

  512. Christ.

  513. The Bible

  514. of Jesus'

  515. day is

  516. what we

  517. call our

  518. Old

  519. Testament.

  520. 39 first

  521. books that

  522. we have

  523. in our

  524. Scripture.

  525. It was not

  526. structured the

  527. same way we

  528. have it

  529. structured today,

  530. but it was

  531. the same

  532. nonetheless.

  533. Luke 11,

  534. you might

  535. want to

  536. turn here

  537. with me.

  538. Luke 11

  539. and verse

  540. 49.

  541. In this

  542. text,

  543. Jesus is

  544. indicting the

  545. Pharisees.

  546. So this is

  547. what He's

  548. accomplishing as

  549. the indictment

  550. of the

  551. Pharisees,

  552. but He does

  553. something really

  554. unique,

  555. something that

  556. should draw

  557. our attention

  558. and help

  559. us to see

  560. what was

  561. Jesus'

  562. Bible?

  563. What's He

  564. referring to

  565. as He

  566. references the

  567. Scriptures in

  568. His ministry?

  569. So here's the

  570. text.

  571. Therefore,

  572. verse 49 of

  573. chapter 11,

  574. therefore also

  575. the wisdom of

  576. God said,

  577. I will send

  578. them prophets

  579. and apostles,

  580. some of whom

  581. they will kill

  582. and persecute,

  583. so that the

  584. blood of all

  585. the prophets

  586. shed from the

  587. foundation of

  588. the world

  589. may be charged

  590. against this

  591. generation.

  592. From the

  593. blood of

  594. Abel to

  595. the blood

  596. of Zechariah,

  597. who perished

  598. between the

  599. altar and

  600. the sanctuary,

  601. yes,

  602. I tell you,

  603. it will be

  604. required of

  605. this generation.

  606. So He's

  607. saying,

  608. He's

  609. indicting

  610. them for

  611. all of

  612. the prophets

  613. that had

  614. been killed.

  615. And He

  616. uses two

  617. names.

  618. Abel,

  619. who here

  620. Jesus is

  621. saying is

  622. the very

  623. first prophet.

  624. Genesis

    Genesis 4:10

  625. chapter 4,

  626. verse 10,

  627. And the

  628. Lord said,

  629. What have

  630. you done?

  631. The voice

  632. of your

  633. brother's

  634. blood is

  635. crying to

  636. me from

  637. the ground.

  638. Right?

  639. Here Jesus

  640. calls Abel

  641. the very

  642. first prophet

  643. who was

  644. killed by

  645. his brother

  646. Cain.

  647. The second

  648. is a man

  649. named

  650. Zechariah.

  651. So from

  652. Abel

  653. to Zechariah,

  654. Zechariah,

  655. and remember

  656. this was

  657. not written

  658. in English,

  659. so it's

  660. not A to

  661. Z.

  662. It's not

  663. what Jesus

  664. is accomplishing

  665. here for

  666. us,

  667. although it's

  668. cool that

  669. that happens.

  670. From Abel

  671. to Zechariah,

  672. why is

  673. he the

  674. bookend?

  675. Why is

  676. he the

  677. other

  678. end?

  679. Why from

  680. Abel

  681. to

  682. Zechariah?

  683. Here's

  684. where we

  685. read about

  686. the death

  687. of Zechariah.

  688. Chronicles

  689. chapter 24,

  690. verse 20

  691. and 21,

  692. Then the

  693. Spirit of

  694. God clothed

  695. Zechariah,

  696. the son of

  697. Jehoiada,

  698. the priest,

  699. and he

  700. stood above

  701. the people

  702. and said

  703. to them,

  704. Thus says

  705. God,

  706. Why do

  707. you break

  708. the commandments

  709. of the

  710. Lord so

  711. that you

  712. cannot

  713. prosper?

  714. Because

  715. you have

  716. forsaken

  717. the Lord,

  718. he has

  719. forsaken

  720. you.

  721. Very

  722. prophetic.

  723. They didn't

  724. like it.

  725. They conspired

  726. against him

  727. and by

  728. command of

  729. the king

  730. they stoned

  731. him with

  732. stones in

  733. the court

  734. of the

  735. house

  736. of the

  737. Lord.

  738. So this

  739. is the

  740. Zechariah.

  741. So Abel,

  742. Genesis

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  743. chapter 4,

  744. Zechariah,

  745. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 24 chapter mention

  746. chapter 24,

  747. but

  748. chronologically,

  749. walking through

  750. history,

  751. the timeline,

  752. chronologically,

  753. the last

  754. martyr of

  755. the Old

  756. Testament was

  757. Uriah,

  758. whose death

  759. is described

  760. in Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 26 chapter mention

  761. chapter 26.

  762. Chronologically,

  763. so Jesus

  764. isn't following

  765. chronology then.

  766. He's not

  767. saying from

  768. the very

  769. first one

  770. to the

  771. very last

  772. one

  773. martyred.

  774. So why?

  775. Abel to

  776. Zechariah.

  777. This is

  778. cool.

  779. The Jewish

  780. Bible of

  781. Jesus'

  782. day was

  783. ordered

  784. differently

  785. than ours.

  786. Our Old

  787. Testament is

  788. grouped by

  789. literary

  790. type.

  791. Jesus'

  792. Bible was

  793. ordered in

  794. a different

  795. way.

  796. 1 and 2

  797. Chronicles were

  798. one book,

  799. just called

  800. Chronicles,

  801. and was

  802. written as

  803. an overview

  804. of Israel's

  805. history with

  806. a particular

  807. emphasis on

  808. David and

  809. the temple.

  810. It was

  811. placed at

  812. the end

  813. of Jesus'

  814. canon,

  815. this Old

  816. Testament

  817. Bible that

  818. they had,

  819. to help

  820. God's people

  821. look forward

  822. to a better

  823. David and

  824. a better

  825. worship.

  826. It was

  827. placed at

  828. the end

  829. there.

  830. It was

  831. meant to

  832. make them

  833. expectant of

  834. the coming

  835. Messiah.

  836. So in

  837. Luke 11,

  838. when Jesus

  839. says,

  840. from the

  841. blood of

  842. Abel to

  843. the blood

  844. of Zechariah,

  845. he's

  846. indicting

  847. the generation

  848. for the

  849. death of

  850. the prophets

  851. of his

  852. Bible.

  853. They would

  854. have gotten,

  855. they knew

  856. in the reading

  857. of their

  858. scripture,

  859. Abel was

  860. the first,

  861. Zechariah was

  862. the last,

  863. as they would

  864. have read

  865. it in order

  866. as it was

  867. printed,

  868. read to

  869. them in

  870. that day.

  871. Are you

  872. catching

  873. this?

  874. This was

  875. the Bible

  876. of Jesus'

  877. day.

  878. The Old

  879. Testament is

  880. the scripture

  881. that he's

  882. referring to.

  883. This is

  884. the scripture

  885. that Peter

  886. is referring

  887. to.

  888. He's saying

  889. you would

  890. do well

  891. to pay

  892. attention

  893. to it,

  894. to these

  895. New Testament

  896. Christians.

  897. Catching

  898. that's

  899. important.

  900. There are

  901. many people

  902. in our

  903. day that

  904. are trying

  905. to undo

  906. that,

  907. that are

  908. trying to

  909. say to

  910. us that

  911. the Old

  912. Testament

  913. ought to

  914. be used

  915. merely for

  916. history and

  917. inspiration.

  918. I quote.

  919. It's so

  920. much more.

  921. It's still

  922. God's

  923. inspired

  924. word.

  925. This was

  926. the text

  927. that New

  928. Testament

  929. Christians

  930. had,

  931. this Old

  932. Testament.

  933. Jesus'

  934. Bible is

  935. what they

  936. had in

  937. their day.

  938. It is a

  939. precious book

  940. that should

  941. be read

  942. and rightly

  943. understood,

  944. and that is

  945. not an easy

  946. thing to do.

  947. It is an

  948. ancient,

  949. ancient text.

  950. Trying to

  951. sort through

  952. promises

  953. already fulfilled

  954. and promises

  955. yet to be

  956. fulfilled is a

  957. challenge of

  958. the Old

  959. Testament.

  960. But because

  961. it's a

  962. challenge,

  963. we should

  964. not dismiss

  965. it.

  966. Because it's

  967. a little

  968. hard to

  969. understand.

  970. We shouldn't

  971. just do

  972. away with

  973. it,

  974. but we

  975. should get

  976. in there

  977. and do

  978. the work

  979. of understanding

  980. it because

  981. it's God's

  982. inspired word.

  983. The Old

  984. Testament.

  985. Okay,

  986. the New

  987. Testament.

  988. Make an

  989. argument for

  990. the New

  991. Testament.

  992. A little

  993. more difficult.

  994. the Lord

  995. also prepared

  996. his disciples

  997. for the

  998. coming of

  999. the New

  1000. Testament.

  1001. John 16

    John 16:12

  1002. verse 12

  1003. says he'd

  1004. given the

  1005. spirit that

  1006. will lead

  1007. them into

  1008. all truth.

  1009. And so

  1010. he endorsed

  1011. it in

  1012. principle.

  1013. I'm going

  1014. to lead

  1015. you into

  1016. all truth

  1017. in principle

  1018. to the

  1019. apostles.

  1020. Paul received

  1021. revelation

  1022. pertaining to

  1023. redemption.

  1024. Galatians 1

    Galatians 1:11–17

  1025. verses 11

  1026. through 17

  1027. and expected

  1028. his writings

  1029. to be

  1030. received as

  1031. from God.

  1032. 2 Thessalonians

    2 Thessalonians 2:13

  1033. chapter 2

  1034. verse 13

  1035. and verse

  1036. 15.

  1037. Peter

  1038. classified

  1039. Paul's

  1040. writings

  1041. with the

  1042. inspired Old

  1043. Testament.

  1044. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3:16

  1045. chapter 3

  1046. verse 16.

  1047. So we get

  1048. these hints

  1049. in our text

  1050. that's equating

  1051. it with the

  1052. Old Testament

  1053. as the

  1054. scriptures.

  1055. scriptures.

  1056. But how do

  1057. we end up

  1058. with our

  1059. New Testament?

  1060. How were

  1061. the books

  1062. that we

  1063. have,

  1064. the 27

  1065. books of

  1066. the New

  1067. Testament,

  1068. considered

  1069. and put

  1070. into the

  1071. canon of

  1072. scripture,

  1073. giving us

  1074. a total

  1075. of 66

  1076. books?

  1077. Well,

  1078. they were

  1079. considered

  1080. by this

  1081. criteria.

  1082. First,

  1083. the book

  1084. had to be

  1085. written by

  1086. a recognized

  1087. apostle.

  1088. Paul or

  1089. Peter would

  1090. be a fantastic

  1091. example of

  1092. that.

  1093. Secondly,

  1094. it had to

  1095. be written

  1096. by or

  1097. written by

  1098. somebody

  1099. associated

  1100. with the

  1101. recognized

  1102. apostle like

  1103. Luke or

  1104. Mark.

  1105. Third,

  1106. it went

  1107. through the

  1108. criteria of

  1109. truthfulness.

  1110. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 18:20

  1111. chapter 18

  1112. verse 20

  1113. and 22.

  1114. If a prophet

  1115. claims to be

  1116. speaking from

  1117. me and what

  1118. he has said

  1119. is not true,

  1120. then he has

  1121. not spoken

  1122. from me.

  1123. So they

  1124. were carefully

  1125. rolled around

  1126. and waited

  1127. and looked

  1128. at,

  1129. examined,

  1130. is this

  1131. consistent

  1132. with the

  1133. truth we

  1134. already have?

  1135. It went

  1136. through that

  1137. filter before

  1138. it was

  1139. considered to

  1140. be part of

  1141. the canon

  1142. of scripture.

  1143. Faithfulness,

  1144. much like

  1145. truthfulness,

  1146. right,

  1147. to previously

  1148. accepted

  1149. canonical

  1150. writings.

  1151. Again,

  1152. is it

  1153. contradictory in

  1154. any way to

  1155. other writings

  1156. that we've

  1157. already

  1158. affirmed

  1159. as

  1160. scripture.

  1161. Fifth,

  1162. confirmed

  1163. by

  1164. Christ,

  1165. prophet,

  1166. or an

  1167. apostle.

  1168. We have

  1169. some examples

  1170. of that.

  1171. Luke

    Luke 24:44

  1172. chapter 24

  1173. verse 44,

  1174. 2 Peter

    2 Peter 3:16

  1175. chapter 3

  1176. verse 16.

  1177. Peter talks

  1178. about,

  1179. in that case,

  1180. 2 Peter,

  1181. Paul's writings

  1182. being scripture.

  1183. And six,

  1184. the church's

  1185. usage

  1186. and

  1187. recognition.

  1188. The church

  1189. used these

  1190. writings,

  1191. these New

  1192. Testament

  1193. writings,

  1194. and was

  1195. deeply

  1196. edified by

  1197. them.

  1198. They were

  1199. believed

  1200. over time

  1201. that they

  1202. were from

  1203. God.

  1204. And so

  1205. the final

  1206. acceptance

  1207. of the

  1208. recognition

  1209. of the

  1210. 66 books

  1211. of the

  1212. Bible

  1213. as

  1214. scripture

  1215. took place

  1216. at a

  1217. gathering

  1218. of church

  1219. leaders

  1220. called the

  1221. Senate of

  1222. Carthage

  1223. in

  1224. A.D.

  1225. 397.

  1226. So quite

  1227. a bit

  1228. of time

  1229. after

  1230. Jesus'

  1231. life,

  1232. death,

  1233. and

  1234. resurrection.

  1235. Now,

  1236. there could

  1237. be much

  1238. criticism

  1239. of the

  1240. Bible

  1241. at this

  1242. point.

  1243. Oh,

  1244. so many

  1245. years

  1246. later,

  1247. I would

  1248. counterpoint,

  1249. but look

  1250. at the

  1251. time they

  1252. gave

  1253. to

  1254. carefully

  1255. weigh

  1256. and measure

  1257. and see

  1258. these works

  1259. out,

  1260. see them

  1261. edify in

  1262. the church.

  1263. The claim

  1264. is always

  1265. that the

  1266. church

  1267. made the

  1268. Bible,

  1269. selected

  1270. what it

  1271. did and

  1272. didn't

  1273. want to

  1274. be

  1275. contained

  1276. within

  1277. it,

  1278. but we

  1279. like to

  1280. rather think

  1281. in these

  1282. terms,

  1283. the church

  1284. did not

  1285. make the

  1286. Bible,

  1287. but rather

  1288. the Bible

  1289. made the

  1290. church.

  1291. And they

  1292. were merely

  1293. recognizing

  1294. that,

  1295. verifying

  1296. its use

  1297. and its

  1298. veracity.

  1299. Now,

  1300. to be added

  1301. to this,

  1302. in much

  1303. less measure,

  1304. it's worth

  1305. mentioning

  1306. our own

  1307. experience

  1308. with the

  1309. scriptures,

  1310. what John

  1311. Piper calls

  1312. a peculiar

  1313. glory.

  1314. The longer

  1315. I spend

  1316. studying the

  1317. Bible,

  1318. the more

  1319. flawlessly

  1320. I see it

  1321. fit together.

  1322. Even

  1323. pieces written

  1324. thousands

  1325. of years

  1326. apart,

  1327. the more

  1328. it feels

  1329. like the

  1330. work of

  1331. God.

  1332. how

  1333. would

  1334. such

  1335. a

  1336. magnificent

  1337. work

  1338. come

  1339. together

  1340. in

  1341. this

  1342. way,

  1343. written

  1344. by so

  1345. many

  1346. people

  1347. across

  1348. so

  1349. much

  1350. time,

  1351. if it

  1352. were

  1353. not

  1354. inspired

  1355. by

  1356. God.

  1357. The

  1358. more

  1359. I

  1360. study it,

  1361. the more

  1362. astounded

  1363. I am

  1364. by its

  1365. interconnectedness

  1366. and all

  1367. of its

  1368. beauty.

  1369. I know

  1370. that's not

  1371. something you

  1372. can break

  1373. your life

  1374. on,

  1375. me saying

  1376. it feels

  1377. like God's

  1378. word.

  1379. You

  1380. shouldn't

  1381. bank your

  1382. life on

  1383. that.

  1384. But for

  1385. me,

  1386. in addition

  1387. to more

  1388. objective

  1389. arguments,

  1390. I have

  1391. to say

  1392. it feels

  1393. like what

  1394. it claims

  1395. to be.

  1396. God

  1397. illuminates

  1398. the text

  1399. to me.

  1400. He makes

  1401. it come

  1402. alive as

  1403. I pick

  1404. it up

  1405. and read

  1406. it.

  1407. Paul wrote

  1408. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:14

  1409. chapter 2

  1410. verse 14,

  1411. the natural

  1412. person does

  1413. not accept

  1414. the things

  1415. of the

  1416. Spirit of

  1417. God,

  1418. for they

  1419. are folly

  1420. to him,

  1421. and he's

  1422. not able

  1423. to understand

  1424. them because

  1425. they are

  1426. spiritually

  1427. discerned.

  1428. So those

  1429. of us who

  1430. have the

  1431. Spirit of

  1432. God,

  1433. and I

  1434. know this

  1435. is a

  1436. difficult

  1437. claim to

  1438. make to

  1439. someone who's

  1440. not a

  1441. follower of

  1442. Christ,

  1443. we have

  1444. the Spirit

  1445. of God,

  1446. and the

  1447. Spirit of

  1448. God leads

  1449. us to

  1450. the truth,

  1451. and where

  1452. do we

  1453. find the

  1454. truth?

  1455. God's

  1456. inspired

  1457. word.

  1458. So what

  1459. we do is

  1460. we put the

  1461. truth in

  1462. front of

  1463. people as

  1464. often as

  1465. we can,

  1466. that the

  1467. Spirit might

  1468. awaken them

  1469. to the

  1470. truth of

  1471. the gospel.

  1472. So we

  1473. contend that

  1474. the Bible is

  1475. God's

  1476. inspired word

  1477. to mankind.

  1478. If then

  1479. the Bible is

  1480. God's inspired

  1481. word, then it

  1482. follows that it

  1483. is also his

  1484. inerrant word,

  1485. spelled properly

  1486. I-N-E-R-R-A-N-T.

  1487. Inerrant.

  1488. Just to prove I

  1489. wouldn't get out

  1490. in a Bible

  1491. bee on that

  1492. one.

  1493. The Bible is

  1494. God's inerrant

  1495. word to

  1496. mankind.

  1497. To say that

  1498. the Bible is

  1499. inerrant is

  1500. to say that

  1501. the Bible in

  1502. the original

  1503. manuscripts does

  1504. not contain

  1505. any error.

  1506. Because the

  1507. Bible is God's

  1508. inspired word,

  1509. then it cannot

  1510. contain error.

  1511. If we are

  1512. not able to

  1513. reconcile something

  1514. that seems to

  1515. be an error in

  1516. the Bible,

  1517. it must be

  1518. assumed that

  1519. there is

  1520. something wrong

  1521. with us,

  1522. not that there

  1523. is something

  1524. wrong with

  1525. the Bible.

  1526. Numbers 23,

    Numbers 23:19

  1527. verse 19,

  1528. says,

  1529. God is not

  1530. man that

  1531. he should

  1532. lie,

  1533. or a son

  1534. of man that

  1535. he should

  1536. change his

  1537. mind.

  1538. Has he

  1539. said,

  1540. and will

  1541. he not

  1542. do it?

  1543. Or has

  1544. he spoken,

  1545. and will

  1546. he not

  1547. fulfill it?

  1548. God can

  1549. not lie.

  1550. He would

  1551. not be

  1552. God if

  1553. he could.

  1554. He is

  1555. truth.

  1556. Therefore,

  1557. anything written

  1558. by him

  1559. must be

  1560. true.

  1561. So the

  1562. Bible can

  1563. be trusted,

  1564. and it

  1565. should be

  1566. trusted,

  1567. even when

  1568. it's difficult

  1569. to understand.

  1570. We put

  1571. ourselves

  1572. under it

  1573. and say,

  1574. I'm not

  1575. the most

  1576. brilliant person

  1577. to have

  1578. ever lived.

  1579. I hope you

  1580. know that

  1581. of yourself.

  1582. Many of us

  1583. act like we

  1584. don't.

  1585. But even

  1586. the most

  1587. brilliant person

  1588. to have

  1589. ever lived

  1590. is not

  1591. God.

  1592. God.

  1593. So we

  1594. do the

  1595. labor of

  1596. getting in

  1597. there and

  1598. trying to

  1599. work this

  1600. thing out.

  1601. Understand it

  1602. as we

  1603. should.

  1604. So the

  1605. Bible is

  1606. inspired,

  1607. and because

  1608. it's inspired,

  1609. it's an

  1610. error.

  1611. And it

  1612. also means

  1613. that the

  1614. Bible is

  1615. authoritative.

  1616. The Bible

  1617. is God's

  1618. authoritative

  1619. word to

  1620. mankind.

  1621. When we

  1622. speak of the

  1623. Bible's

  1624. authority,

  1625. we are

  1626. saying that

  1627. the words

  1628. of the

  1629. Bible

  1630. carry God's

  1631. authority

  1632. since he

  1633. is their

  1634. author.

  1635. That makes

  1636. sense,

  1637. doesn't it?

  1638. God wrote

  1639. the book,

  1640. therefore,

  1641. it's

  1642. authoritative.

  1643. It carries

  1644. his weight

  1645. behind it.

  1646. So then,

  1647. to disbelieve

  1648. or disobey

  1649. the Bible

  1650. is to

  1651. disbelieve

  1652. or disobey

  1653. God

  1654. himself.

  1655. 2 Thessalonians

  1656. 3,

  1657. 13-15.

  1658. Paul writes,

  1659. As for you

  1660. brothers,

  1661. do not

  1662. grow weary

  1663. in doing

  1664. good.

  1665. If anyone

  1666. does not

  1667. obey what

  1668. we say

  1669. in this

  1670. letter,

  1671. take note

  1672. of that

  1673. person and

  1674. have nothing

  1675. to do

  1676. with him

  1677. that he

  1678. may be

  1679. ashamed.

  1680. Do not

  1681. regard him

  1682. as an

  1683. enemy,

  1684. but warn

  1685. him as

  1686. a brother.

  1687. We ought

  1688. to tremble

  1689. when we

  1690. open up

  1691. this text.

  1692. When the

  1693. holy writ

  1694. comes out

  1695. before us

  1696. because it

  1697. is God

  1698. himself

  1699. speaking

  1700. to us,

  1701. directing

  1702. our lives

  1703. for our

  1704. good and

  1705. for his

  1706. glory.

  1707. We ought

  1708. to endeavor

  1709. to obey

  1710. it in

  1711. every way,

  1712. every jot

  1713. and tittle.

  1714. It ought

  1715. to bring

  1716. us great

  1717. pleasure to

  1718. do such

  1719. a work.

  1720. God's

  1721. word is

  1722. inerrant,

  1723. excuse me,

  1724. it is

  1725. inspired,

  1726. therefore it is

  1727. inerrant,

  1728. and it is

  1729. authoritative.

  1730. Fourth,

  1731. the Bible

  1732. is God's

  1733. clear word

  1734. to mankind.

  1735. The

  1736. clarity

  1737. of the

  1738. scripture

  1739. is a

  1740. doctrine

  1741. that I

  1742. run to

  1743. often as

  1744. I am

  1745. confused,

  1746. as I am

  1747. perplexed

  1748. by a

  1749. text.

  1750. I go,

  1751. oh,

  1752. but we

  1753. believe that

  1754. the Bible

  1755. is clear,

  1756. right?

  1757. That it

  1758. can instruct

  1759. simple

  1760. people.

  1761. The Bible's

  1762. clarity means

  1763. that those

  1764. who seek

  1765. to know

  1766. the truth

  1767. can know

  1768. it

  1769. by the

  1770. help of

  1771. the Holy

  1772. Spirit.

  1773. Those who

  1774. seek to

  1775. know it

  1776. can

  1777. by the

  1778. help

  1779. of the

  1780. Holy

  1781. Spirit.

  1782. A couple

  1783. of Old

  1784. Testament

  1785. texts

  1786. speak to

  1787. that.

  1788. Psalm

    Psalms 19:7

  1789. 19,

  1790. verse 7,

  1791. the law

  1792. of the

  1793. Lord is

  1794. perfect,

  1795. reviving

  1796. the soul.

  1797. The

  1798. testimony

  1799. of the

  1800. Lord is

  1801. sure,

  1802. making

  1803. wise

  1804. the

  1805. simple.

  1806. Isn't

  1807. that good?

  1808. Isn't

  1809. that good?

  1810. And

  1811. throughout

  1812. the history

  1813. of the

  1814. church,

  1815. people who

  1816. most often

  1817. most readily

  1818. turn to

  1819. faith in

  1820. the gospel

  1821. of Jesus

  1822. Christ are

  1823. the simplest

  1824. of people,

  1825. not the

  1826. most brilliant

  1827. of people.

  1828. The most

  1829. brilliant of

  1830. people seem

  1831. to be their

  1832. own worst

  1833. enemies,

  1834. but people

  1835. who come

  1836. humbly

  1837. to the

  1838. text.

  1839. Lord,

  1840. make me

  1841. wise.

  1842. I am

  1843. but

  1844. simple.

  1845. 119,

  1846. verse

  1847. 130.

  1848. The

  1849. unfolding of

  1850. your words

  1851. gives light.

  1852. It imparts

  1853. understanding

  1854. to the

  1855. simple.

  1856. Blessed

  1857. promises

  1858. found

  1859. in the

  1860. scripture.

  1861. That is

  1862. not to

  1863. say that

  1864. it is

  1865. always

  1866. easy.

  1867. It is

  1868. certainly

  1869. not.

  1870. As I

  1871. said before,

  1872. the Bible

  1873. is an

  1874. ancient

  1875. book.

  1876. It was

  1877. written

  1878. across

  1879. centuries.

  1880. It was

  1881. written in

  1882. languages

  1883. and cultures

  1884. that we

  1885. are not

  1886. first-hand

  1887. familiar

  1888. with.

  1889. Some

  1890. of our

  1891. great

  1892. difficulty

  1893. is trying

  1894. to

  1895. understand

  1896. the

  1897. context

  1898. into

  1899. which

  1900. the

  1901. text

  1902. was

  1903. written.

  1904. picking

  1905. up

  1906. translative

  1907. challenges

  1908. in the

  1909. text.

  1910. Although I

  1911. will tell

  1912. you that

  1913. more often

  1914. than not

  1915. when you

  1916. try to

  1917. deep dive

  1918. the

  1919. Greek,

  1920. the

  1921. English

  1922. words

  1923. are

  1924. really

  1925. great.

  1926. They

  1927. did a

  1928. good

  1929. job.

  1930. You

  1931. think,

  1932. I'm

  1933. going to

  1934. unlock

  1935. some

  1936. magic

  1937. in this

  1938. verse.

  1939. And you

  1940. go,

  1941. no,

  1942. that's

  1943. what the

  1944. Greek

  1945. word

  1946. means.

  1947. It's

  1948. what they

  1949. translated

  1950. it

  1951. in

  1952. English.

  1953. But there

  1954. is work

  1955. to be

  1956. done.

  1957. We have

  1958. to see

  1959. that the

  1960. Bible

  1961. wasn't

  1962. inspired

  1963. in

  1964. English.

  1965. no

  1966. version

  1967. of it

  1968. no

  1969. matter

  1970. what

  1971. somebody

  1972. will

  1973. tell

  1974. you.

  1975. This

  1976. is a

  1977. translation

  1978. of the

  1979. original

  1980. inspired

  1981. text.

  1982. And so

  1983. there is

  1984. work to

  1985. be done

  1986. in there.

  1987. And praise

  1988. God,

  1989. there's

  1990. great

  1991. kindness

  1992. toward us.

  1993. He gives

  1994. us people

  1995. who are

  1996. smarter

  1997. than us,

  1998. who do

  1999. this kind

  2000. of work

  2001. and put

  2002. it in

  2003. books

  2004. and let

  2005. us

  2006. reference

  2007. it

  2008. and

  2009. create

  2010. amazing

  2011. computer

  2012. programs

  2013. and

  2014. teach

  2015. and teach

  2016. and teach

  2017. and teach.

  2018. It's a

  2019. blessing

  2020. that we

  2021. get to

  2022. sit under

  2023. other

  2024. teaching.

  2025. I hope

  2026. it's a

  2027. blessing

  2028. to

  2029. you

  2030. that

  2031. you

  2032. sit

  2033. under

  2034. my

  2035. teaching

  2036. and I

  2037. labor

  2038. across

  2039. texts.

  2040. I joke,

  2041. although I probably

2042. shouldn't because I should know Greek better than I do,

2043. but that I learn Greek a week before you do.

2044. I'm getting into it and working out meanings and trying to bring it to you in its greatest

  2045. accuracy.

2046. So the clarity of Scripture doesn't mean that it's always an easy thing to do.

2047. Christianity is itself an education as we try to pick up this book and know it and

2048. understand it and understand it and understand it and understand it and that we might be obedient to our God.

2049. This means that there are times that it will take a lot of work to sort out its meaning.

2050. I'll give you the example of the issue of divorce and remarriage that we've been dealing with in the past months.

2051. I won't say months, years, but I'm going to say months that I've been diligently working on it.

2052. And we might, at the end of all of that, still not agree on exactly what the text

  2053. teaches.

2054. But those things that are most important for life and godliness,

  2055. we can know

  2056. with great certainty.

2057. What did Peter say in 2 Peter?

2058. His divine power is granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness

2059. through the knowledge of Him.

  2060. I'm back in 2 Peter chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

2061. And then later he says, we have this more sure thing, this prophetic word,

2062. which we will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place.

2063. It lights our way, illuminates our path to the day dawns and the morning star rises in our hearts.

2064. So the scripture is clear and it can be understood with the help of the Holy Spirit.

2065. Fifth, the Bible is God's necessary word to mankind.

2066. God created mankind to be in a relationship with Him,

  2067. walking under His instruction.

2068. After the record of God creating man and woman in Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

2069. we read in verses 28 through 30,

2070. God blessed them and God said to them,

2071. Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea

2072. and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  2073. And God said,

2074. Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of the earth

2075. and every tree with seed in its fruit.

2076. You shall have them for food.

2077. And every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens

2078. and to everything that creeps on the earth,

2079. everything that has the breath of life,

2080. I have given every green plant for food and it was so.

2081. So God gives Adam and Eve instruction.

2082. He tells them what to do.

  2083. Be fruitful.

  2084. Multiply.

  2085. Fill the earth.

  2086. Rule over it.

  2087. He says subdue it.

  2088. Have dominion over it.

2089. He gives them in the very beginning good instruction.

2090. He tells them to have children and to care for the earth.

2091. He'll state it again in Genesis chapter 2 verse 15.

    Genesis 2:15

  2092. Then God,

2093. Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.

2094. And then in Genesis chapter 2 verse 16 and 17,

    Genesis 2:16

2095. God gives them a command to not do.

  2096. He says,

2097. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,

2098. but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.

2099. For in the day that you eat of it,

  2100. you will surely die.

  2101. Again, good instruction.

2102. I want good for you.

2103. I put you on the earth for a purpose.

2104. Do this, but don't do this.

2105. And it's in chapter 3 of Genesis that the fall of man is recorded.

2106. Adam and Eve decided not to follow the good word of God,

2107. which is rebellion against him.

2108. We are all guilty of this.

2109. So you see that even prior to sin entering the world,

2110. we were designed to live in relationship with God,

2111. receiving his loving word to us and obeying it.

2112. How much more needful we are now living with the repercussions of the curse.

2113. We all the more need God's good instruction.

2114. It is necessary for us.

2115. Epistemology is the study of how we know what we know.

2116. If you've been here long, you've heard me do this.

2117. I'm going to do it super fast.

2118. So if you've not been around,

2119. I'll give you a fuller explanation sometime.

2120. How do we know what we know?

2121. And all of us have some framework that we come to the world with.

2122. And it tends to run generationally.

2123. So across the past generations,

2124. my parents, some of you in this room,

2125. not many of you in this room,

2126. but some of you in this room,

  2127. would be considered modernists.

2128. It's out of modernism that the scientific method arose.

2129. So anything that could be measurable, tangible,

  2130. that's what's true.

2131. It helps us to define truth.

  2132. It's measurable.

  2133. It's tangible.

2134. And modernists tend to think in this way,

2135. fairly locked in to this kind of thinking.

2136. Faith becomes a challenge to them in that regard.

2137. Or in some cases, some of the older generation,

2138. they saw that church, quote unquote, worked.

2139. And that became the very evidence for them.

  2140. Society's going well.

2141. Church is part of that.

2142. I will be part of church.

  2143. Church.

2144. After the modernists emerged the postmodernists.

  2145. Creative names.

2146. I fall into that category, postmodernists.

2147. Believe that there is truth,

2148. but we want to define truth for ourselves.

2149. Truth is what we experience to be true.

2150. So it's still based in something factual,

2151. but I'm going to decide what is and isn't factual.

2152. I want to feel it to be true.

2153. A lot of weaknesses in that as well, to be clear.

2154. I don't want to pick on the modernists.

2155. Many of you in this room are now what we call post-postmodernists.

2156. Post-postmodernists aren't sure that truth can be arrived at at all.

2157. This is the age in which we live.

2158. And just dip your toe in the world of social media,

2159. and you will see that everyone seems to know, but no one really knows.

2160. And there's a great deal of misplaced confidence in what is true.

2161. And no matter how you arrive at what you think is true,

2162. none of us are going to get it right,

2163. apart from the revelation of God.

2164. We need God to define for us what is true,

2165. what is objective, what is absolute.

2166. We all need a hook to hang our hat on.

2167. Probably only the modernists get that in the room.

2168. We need to go to something that is absolute,

2169. something that speaks from without,

2170. speaks into our lives and tells us what is true

2171. and what is good and what is beautiful.

  2172. The Bible does this.

2173. The Bible is necessary for our salvation,

2174. and it's necessary for our sanctification.

  2175. Romans 10, verse 17,

    Romans 10:17

2176. So faith comes from hearing,

2177. and hearing through the Word of Christ.

2178. This is how we come to faith in Jesus Christ.

  2179. The Scripture, whether preached,

  2180. or shared one-to-one,

  2181. or read,

2182. is the Word of God

2183. that is used as the tool

  2184. by the Holy Spirit

2185. to birth faith in the Christian.

2186. That I'm sharing with you

2187. what the Word of God says,

2188. that I'm reading to you

  2189. the Word of God,

2190. that you're hearing it proclaimed,

  2191. sitting in a sermon,

2192. listening to it on the radio.

2193. This is the sword that the Spirit wields

2194. to bring about salvation of God's people.

  2195. Not only that,

  2196. He brings about perfection,

  2197. sanctification,

2198. this process of ever-growing holiness

2199. in the life of a Christian.

2200. There is, I would contend,

  2201. a one-to-one ratio

2202. of people who are actively studying

2203. and applying the Scripture to holiness.

2204. And to those who are finding their lives

  2205. are struggling,

  2206. and they're finding themselves

  2207. caught in habitual sin,

2208. or not doing the other altogether,

2209. well, they don't do it well at all.

2210. God has not told us

  2211. everything in the Bible.

  2212. The Bible doesn't contain

  2213. all truth for mankind,

2214. but He has told us

  2215. everything necessary

  2216. for holiness.

2217. That's why we call it the Holy Bible.

  2218. It's the absolute resource,

  2219. the authoritative book

  2220. on holiness.

  2221. Deuteronomy 29, verse 29.

    Deuteronomy 29:29

2222. The secret things belong to the Lord our God,

2223. but the things that are revealed

  2224. belong to us

2225. and to our children forever,

2226. that we may do all the words

  2227. of this law.

2228. He's given us what we need

  2229. to proceed in holiness.

2230. Jesus prays in John 17.

  2231. Not too long ago,

  2232. Clay preached a series

2233. through the High Priestly Prayer.

  2234. Jesus pray,

  2235. Jesus prays not that

2236. God would take His disciples

  2237. out of the world,

2238. but that He would leave them

  2239. in the world.

  2240. Verse 15, He says,

2241. I do not ask that you take them

  2242. out of the world,

2243. but that you keep them

  2244. from the evil one.

2245. They are not of the world,

2246. just as I am not of the world.

2247. Sanctify them in the truth.

  2248. Your word is truth.

2249. As you sent me into the world,

2250. so I have sent them

  2251. into the world.

  2252. And for their sake,

  2253. I consecrate myself

2254. that they also may be

  2255. sanctified in truth.

2256. There's the word of God

2257. that gives us what we need,

2258. equips us to go out

  2259. into the world

2260. and live for Jesus Christ.

2261. So, the Bible is necessary.

  2262. Sixth and last.

  2263. I'm moving.

2264. The Bible is God's sufficient word

  2265. to mankind.

  2266. The Bible's sufficiency

2267. means that it contains within it

  2268. all of the instruction

  2269. that we need

  2270. for our salvation

  2271. and our sanctification.

  2272. All of it.

2273. We don't have to go beyond

  2274. the pages of Scripture

  2275. to figure out

2276. how we ought to live

2277. as followers of Jesus Christ.

  2278. That includes things like

  2279. how we conduct ourselves

  2280. as a church.

  2281. Many applications

  2282. of our living.

2283. It has everything in it

  2284. that we need.

  2285. Beloved,

2286. we far too often run

  2287. to extra-biblical sources.

  2288. Some good

  2289. that points back

  2290. to the Scripture.

  2291. Help us to understand

  2292. the Scripture.

  2293. I'm constantly promoting books.

  2294. Constantly.

  2295. Please be readers.

  2296. That's fantastic.

  2297. But read stuff

  2298. that points you back

  2299. to the Scripture.

2300. Put you in this text

  2301. because it is sufficient

  2302. for the task.

  2303. We have a culture

  2304. that is looking

  2305. for answers everywhere.

  2306. Oprah Winfrey

  2307. has built a career

  2308. on this.

  2309. People need help.

2310. She's ready to provide it

  2311. in any way

  2312. that tickles their ears.

  2313. We have pastors

  2314. in our day

  2315. that are doing

  2316. the very same thing

  2317. instead of taking people

  2318. to the text.

  2319. It is sufficient

  2320. for all of this.

  2321. I'll bring you back

  2322. to a text

  2323. that I read earlier

2324. but I'm going to read it

  2325. in its completion.

  2326. 2 Timothy 3

    2 Timothy 3:16

  2327. verses 16 and 17.

  2328. All Scripture

2329. is breathed out by God

  2330. and profitable

  2331. for teaching,

  2332. for reproof,

  2333. for correction,

  2334. and for training

  2335. in righteousness.

  2336. All the ways

  2337. that we need

  2338. to give application

  2339. of this text

  2340. to our lives

2341. that the man of God

  2342. may be complete,

  2343. equipped for

  2344. every good work.

  2345. Everything

  2346. that we are meant

  2347. to do,

  2348. all of it

  2349. is given to us

  2350. in this text.

  2351. It speaks to us

  2352. about our various

  2353. kinds of sin,

  2354. our sins of commission,

  2355. the things that we're

  2356. not to do

2357. and yet we do them

  2358. anyway.

  2359. And then too often

  2360. ignored in the church

2361. the things that we are

  2362. supposed to be doing

2363. but we do not do.

  2364. It speaks to us

  2365. about both

  2366. sins of commission

  2367. and omission.

  2368. Shows us the way

  2369. in which we

  2370. should walk.

  2371. So the Bible

  2372. is God's inspired,

  2373. inherent,

  2374. authoritative,

  2375. clear,

  2376. necessary,

  2377. and sufficient

  2378. word

  2379. to mankind.

  2380. I hope you even

2381. pick some of this up

  2382. each Lord's Day

  2383. when I get up

  2384. to preach

2385. before I read the text

  2386. and I say,

  2387. beloved,

  2388. this is God's

  2389. word to us.

  2390. It's written for

  2391. His glory

  2392. and our good.

2393. We would all do well

  2394. to believe its promises

  2395. and obey

  2396. its commands.

  2397. And

  2398. most of you

  2399. don't know

  2400. that I started

  2401. doing that

2402. when we had a young

2403. man who was a member

  2404. of our church

  2405. who's now moved away.

  2406. Good member,

  2407. faithful member,

  2408. left on good terms.

  2409. He was really

  2410. struggling with

  2411. the Bible's

  2412. inerrancy.

  2413. Particularly,

  2414. it's inerrancy.

  2415. He had read

  2416. so many garbage books

  2417. that had him

  2418. all confused.

  2419. And at the end

  2420. of it all,

  2421. as I'm speaking

  2422. with him

  2423. and trying to

  2424. bring him back

  2425. to and apply

  2426. the apologetics

  2427. for the Scripture,

  2428. what really came

  2429. down to it

  2430. is that he wanted

  2431. the Bible's promises

  2432. but he did not

  2433. want to obey

  2434. its commands.

  2435. He wanted all

  2436. the good promises

  2437. of God

  2438. but he really

  2439. wanted to live

  2440. his life

  2441. the way he wanted

  2442. to live his life.

  2443. And so,

  2444. the following

  2445. Lord's Day,

  2446. I kind of

  2447. in a flurry

  2448. just ripped

  2449. those two sentences

  2450. out,

  2451. put them at the

  2452. beginning of the text

  2453. to make the point

  2454. to this young man,

2455. I want you to hear this,

  2456. you can't have it

  2457. your way.

  2458. You've got to take

  2459. God on his terms.

  2460. If you're going to

  2461. have his promises,

  2462. you have to obey

  2463. his commands.

  2464. He gives the evidence

  2465. of his promises

  2466. being fulfilled

  2467. in our lives.

  2468. This is what

  2469. 2 Peter,

  2470. that's what Peter's

  2471. trying to communicate

  2472. to us,

  2473. right?

  2474. Live in this way,

  2475. make your calling

  2476. and election sure,

  2477. right?

  2478. And then you'll know,

  2479. you'll never fall away

  2480. because you're God's,

  2481. you belong to him

  2482. and it's this text

  2483. that communicates

  2484. that to us

  2485. and praise God,

  2486. he saw that,

  2487. right?

2488. By the work of the

  2489. Spirit,

  2490. not because I wrote

  2491. a catchy phrase

  2492. but because I opened

  2493. up the text,

  2494. right?

  2495. Each Sunday,

2496. I opened up the text

  2497. and I'm forever

  2498. grateful for that

  2499. in his life.

  2500. So some application.

  2501. Read and study

  2502. the Bible.

  2503. I hope that's the

  2504. first and most

  2505. obvious application.

  2506. But you cannot

  2507. read and study

  2508. the Bible

  2509. as if you would

  2510. read any other

  2511. book.

  2512. College students,

  2513. I think this is

  2514. especially entrapping

  2515. for you.

2516. I know it was for me

2517. when I was in school.

  2518. There's so much

  2519. you have to read,

  2520. right?

  2521. You're getting

  2522. information pumped

2523. at you all the time.

  2524. Do not treat

  2525. the Scripture

  2526. like all the other

  2527. texts you have to

  2528. read, right?

  2529. This is a sacred

  2530. text, right?

  2531. Written by our

  2532. God for us.

  2533. He wants to meet

  2534. with you in the

  2535. Scriptures.

  2536. George Whitfield,

  2537. the great evangelist

2538. on the front of your

  2539. bulletin, said,

  2540. the Scriptures contain

  2541. the deep things of

  2542. God and therefore

  2543. can never be

  2544. sufficiently searched

  2545. into by a careless,

  2546. superficial,

  2547. cursory way of

  2548. reading them,

  2549. but by an

  2550. industrious,

  2551. close,

  2552. and humble

  2553. application.

  2554. I fear

  2555. that the rise

  2556. of the

  2557. information age

  2558. and the way

  2559. information comes

  2560. at us so fast,

  2561. particularly

  2562. through social

  2563. media,

  2564. soundbite,

  2565. soundbite,

  2566. soundbite,

  2567. soundbite,

  2568. soundbite,

  2569. right?

  2570. The 24-hour

  2571. news cycle.

  2572. My word,

  2573. just information

  2574. is coming like

  2575. this all the time,

  2576. that we as a

  2577. people are losing

  2578. the ability

  2579. to sit and be

  2580. quiet and have

  2581. deep thoughts,

  2582. right?

  2583. To sit with

  2584. the text.

  2585. And we might

  2586. need to do

  2587. something dramatic

  2588. to discipline

  2589. ourselves back

  2590. towards being

  2591. able to really

  2592. read and study

  2593. the Bible,

  2594. right?

  2595. Just try to get

  2596. away from your

  2597. technology and

  2598. spend good time.

  2599. If you're ever up

  2600. here during the

  2601. week, you will

  2602. find me at times

  2603. pacing the parking

  2604. lot.

  2605. I've gotten pretty

  2606. good at not

  2607. running into stuff

  2608. and reading while

  2609. walking to get

  2610. away from my

  2611. computer.

  2612. It's constant

  2613. stuff dinging at

  2614. me all the time

  2615. and distracting

  2616. me away.

  2617. What if Satan

  2618. and his great

  2619. mastery of lies

  2620. has promoted

  2621. these kinds of

  2622. things?

  2623. I'm not saying

  2624. anybody who

  2625. invented any of

  2626. these things is a

  2627. tool of Satan.

  2628. But as working

  2629. us into a place

  2630. where we are so

  2631. even unable to

  2632. read God's word

  2633. and to think

  2634. deeply about it,

  2635. to really meet

  2636. with him in the

  2637. scripture,

  2638. right?

  2639. We might read

  2640. it to check a

  2641. box, right?

  2642. Beware the

  2643. Instagram Bible.

  2644. Somebody might

  2645. say, I read my

  2646. Bible every day

  2647. and it's some

  2648. post, some

  2649. meme that

  2650. somebody posts.

  2651. It's a half

  2652. of a verse

  2653. taken out of

  2654. its context.

  2655. You might flip

  2656. open an app.

  2657. These things can

  2658. be helpful to

  2659. us, but we

  2660. don't really

  2661. drink deeply

  2662. of God's

  2663. word.

  2664. It may take

  2665. some serious

  2666. discipline in

  2667. our lives.

  2668. Reading other

  2669. books, I will

  2670. tell you, helps.

  2671. You read other

  2672. books, point you

  2673. to the scripture.

  2674. It's a good

  2675. discipline to

  2676. have.

  2677. So read and

  2678. study the Bible.

  2679. Secondly, meditate

  2680. on and memorize

  2681. the Bible.

  2682. Meditate on and

  2683. memorize the

  2684. Bible.

  2685. And I will tell

  2686. you that if you

  2687. will meditate,

  2688. memorization follows

  2689. really easily

  2690. behind it.

  2691. Right?

  2692. That you really

  2693. roll a text around

  2694. in your brain.

  2695. That you really

  2696. think about what

  2697. it means.

  2698. I have member

  2699. health survey

  2700. results.

  2701. If you're not a

  2702. member of our

  2703. church, this is

  2704. something we're

  2705. trying to do

  2706. every year.

  2707. There's a big

  2708. disconnect between

  2709. everyone's, who

  2710. filled it out, idea

  2711. of what they know

  2712. to be true.

  2713. I read the

  2714. Bible.

  2715. I understand the

  2716. Bible.

  2717. I'm equipped.

  2718. I've got everything

  2719. I've got going on.

  2720. I'm solid on the

  2721. doctrines.

  2722. I totally get it.

  2723. There's a big

  2724. disconnect between

  2725. that and

  2726. obedience.

  2727. There's a lot of

  2728. habitual sin.

  2729. There's a lack of

  2730. sharing the

  2731. gospel.

  2732. There's a big

  2733. disconnect between

  2734. the two.

2735. And I know that we

  2736. desire.

  2737. I know that we

  2738. are zealous.

  2739. We want to do

  2740. good works.

  2741. I don't think

  2742. anybody in here is

  2743. just lackadaisical

  2744. and lazy.

  2745. I think the

  2746. disconnect,

  2747. though, is we

  2748. say we

  2749. understand, we

  2750. say we read, but

  2751. we don't really

  2752. meet with God in

  2753. the Scripture.

  2754. We don't really

  2755. let Him sink

  2756. truth deep down

  2757. into us.

  2758. Let it take

  2759. root and

  2760. changes as a

  2761. result.

  2762. So there's a

  2763. challenge to our

  2764. church in this

  2765. way.

  2766. So read and

  2767. study it, meditate

  2768. on and memorize

  2769. it, and obey

  2770. it, and then walk

  2771. it out.

  2772. Don't just be

  2773. hearers, but be

  2774. doers of the

  2775. word also.

  2776. In closing, you

  2777. guys are familiar

  2778. with Martin

  2779. Luther.

  2780. October 31st,

  2781. 1517, nailed

  2782. the 95

  2783. theses on the

  2784. Wittenberg

  2785. door because he

  2786. was in the

  2787. Scripture, because

  2788. he was meeting

  2789. with God in the

  2790. Bible and saw

  2791. the heirs of

  2792. the Catholic

  2793. Church in this

  2794. day, kicked

  2795. off the

  2796. Protestant

  2797. Reformation that

  2798. cried all

  2799. throughout it, and

  2800. we cry it to

  2801. this day, sola

  2802. scriptura.

  2803. The text, the

  2804. text, the

  2805. text.

  2806. He penned

  2807. this poem.

  2808. Feelings come,

  2809. and feelings go,

  2810. and feelings are

  2811. deceiving.

  2812. My warrant is

  2813. the word of

  2814. God, not

  2815. else is worth

  2816. believing.

  2817. Though all my

  2818. heart should feel

  2819. condemned for

  2820. want of some

  2821. sweet token, there

  2822. is one greater

  2823. than my heart

  2824. whose word cannot

  2825. be broken.

  2826. I'll trust in

  2827. God's unchanging

  2828. word till soul

  2829. and body sever.

  2830. For though all

  2831. things shall pass

  2832. away, his word

  2833. shall stand

  2834. forever.

  2835. Let's pray

  2836. together.
