  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  2. While you're getting there, just a little aside, a little over a week ago I turned 39, and I'm feeling that.

  3. But then I realized that I got an extra short haircut.

  4. I sat down with the barber and said, do whatever you want to, which I think is the kind of attitude you should have when you're 39.

  5. And this is the haircut he gave me.

  6. And then I got contacts, which I realize that many of you have never seen me without glasses.

  7. It's been a while.

  8. The reason I got contacts is because I used to always wear contacts, but we had a baby, and we just paid him off.

  9. He's almost three, and I felt like I could afford contacts once again.

  10. I just, I want you all to know that I am not having a midlife crisis.

  11. It just kind of all happened at the same time, so I'm okay.

  12. I can't guarantee what will happen next January, but at least for now.

  13. Our text for today is Hebrews chapter 1, verse 1, and the first half of verse 2.

    Hebrews 1:1

  14. It's my intention, although we know how this goes, to preach a brief sermon this morning as an introduction to the book of Hebrews.

  15. But this brief sermon, I hope, is going to be a brief sermon with a long introduction.

  16. So I just want you to hang tight on Hebrews chapter 1, verse 1 and 2, as I work to give you some background to the book of Hebrews.

    Hebrews 1:1

  17. The book of Hebrews is a gorgeous book of the Bible.

  18. It is extremely well written.

  19. And we'll talk a bit more about that soon.

  20. As such, it can also be a bit perplexing.

  21. If you've ever taken up the task of studying the book of Hebrews, you know exactly what I mean.

  22. As we work through it in this next year, I'm sure I'll feel that more than I even do now.

  23. I have a wonderful commentary by a man named William Lane, who's a contemporary, highly respected New Testament authority.

  24. And he wrote this in his introduction to his commentary.

  25. Hebrews is a delight for the person who loves puzzles.

  26. Its form is unusual.

  27. Its setting in life is uncertain.

  28. And its argument is unfamiliar.

  29. It invites engagement in the task of defining the undefined.

  30. Undefined are the identity of the writer, his conceptual background,

  31. the character and location of the community addressed,

  32. the circumstances and date of composition,

  33. the nature of the crisis to which the document is a response,

  34. the literary genre,

  35. and the purpose and plan of the document as a response.

  36. Although these undefined issues continue to be addressed and debated vigorously,

  37. no real consensus has been reached.

  38. It's encouraging because we begin a study of the book of Hebrews, is it not?

  39. There is probably no other book of the Bible of which more has been written

  40. and more opposition exists because we're laboring to define the undefined.

  41. There's some things that are unclear about this book.

  42. So, Lane then goes on to do a very careful work

  43. to give us what I like to call the probabilities and the likelies.

  44. So, you'll hear me use those words quite a bit to say probably.

  45. So, we're going to talk about the writer of Hebrews

  46. because we don't actually know.

  47. We don't have a confidence in who wrote the book of Hebrews.

  48. But we could say something like probably so-and-so or such-and-such,

  49. which I won't really do.

  50. But we may do that in some other areas,

  51. the probabilities and the likelies.

  52. There is, though, one matter without contention.

  53. The theme of Hebrews is

  54. the supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  55. The supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  56. Christ is greater than.

  57. You can fill in anything in that blank.

  58. Christ is greater than.

  59. And the writer of Hebrews makes the case

  60. that Christ is greater than angels.

  61. Christ is greater than priests.

  62. And Christ is greater than any old covenant institution.

  63. Christ is supreme.

  64. And Christ is the final word.

  65. God has spoken by His Son.

  66. We'll see in our text this morning.

  67. And we need now no new revelation.

  68. God spoke in Christ and in the New Testament

  69. that gives witness to Christ.

  70. So, Jesus is also final in this way.

  71. The supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  72. Now, let's talk about some things we can know

  73. and maybe guess at

  74. about the author,

  75. about the audience,

  76. and about the occasion of this writing.

  77. Now, the author is presumably

  78. within the circle of Paul.

  79. Pauline's circle, missionary band.

  80. You remember that Paul would travel around.

  81. He'd pick up a disciple

  82. and leave a disciple behind.

  83. They were constantly in this melee

  84. of joining and splitting apart.

  85. Although, with fair confidence,

  86. we can say that the author was not Paul.

  87. So, we can see that he was part of the circle of Paul

  88. because in Hebrews 13, verse 23,

    Hebrews 13:23

  89. he says,

  90. you should know that our brother,

  91. Timothy,

  92. has been released,

  93. with whom I shall see you

  94. if he comes soon.

  95. So, he often has the intention

  96. of coming back and joining this people,

  97. and he anticipates

  98. that Timothy will join him.

  99. And this is the Timothy we know

  100. as Paul's compatriot.

  101. Right?

  102. However,

  103. we do not believe that he is Paul

  104. because the language of Hebrews

  105. constitutes the finest Greek

  106. in the New Testament.

  107. Now, you might think,

  108. gosh, but Paul's writing.

  109. And yes, I agree with you on that.

  110. But even as we say that,

  111. we have to go,

  112. oh, but the writer of Hebrews.

  113. It is the finest Greek

  114. in the New Testament.

  115. Right?

  116. We don't really have a standard

  117. for that as American Christians.

  118. So, we have to look to scholars

  119. to help us with it.

  120. Again,

  121. William Lane says

  122. that the writer of Hebrews,

  123. Greek,

  124. is far superior

  125. to the Pauline standard.

  126. And,

  127. it contains within it

  128. very distinctive imagery.

  129. Ship Adrift,

  130. chapter 2, verse 1.

  131. An anchor gripping the seabed,

  132. chapter 6, verse 19.

  133. A double-edged sword,

  134. chapter 4, verse 12.

  135. And these are all images

  136. that are foreign to Pauline usage.

  137. He never again,

  138. he never picks these things up,

  139. I shouldn't say again.

  140. He never does use any of this imagery.

  141. And it's wonderful imagery.

  142. If you stick with me for very long,

  143. you'll hear me use the same imagery

  144. because when I find one that works,

  145. I use it.

  146. Right?

  147. And Paul doesn't do that

  148. in any of his letters.

  149. And so,

  150. this man,

  151. I think with fair certainty,

  152. we can say,

  153. was in the circle of Paul,

  154. but was not Paul.

  155. We also,

  156. with some fair certainty,

  157. can know that he was a

  158. Hellenistic Jewish Christian.

  159. That is to say,

  160. he was Jewish

  161. in his ethnic descent,

  162. but he was Hellenistic,

  163. it means he's a Greek-speaking Jew.

  164. He had been part of dispersion

  165. and his family had been spread abroad

  166. and then had come down through.

  167. So,

  168. the Hellenistic Jews

  169. were those who were primarily,

  170. predominantly,

  171. Greek-speaking Jews.

  172. Hebrews.

  173. And we can presume this

  174. because the book of Hebrews

  175. is full,

  176. it is,

  177. it is just chock full

  178. of Old Testament references,

  179. but they are exclusively

  180. from the Septuagint.

  181. The Septuagint,

  182. the Septuagint was the Greek translation

  183. of the Old Testament.

  184. This would have been the Old Testament

  185. of the Hellenistic Jews.

  186. Much like we pick up our English copies

  187. of the text,

  188. they would have picked up

  189. a Greek copy,

  190. a translated Greek copy

  191. of the text.

  192. It's called the Septuagint.

  193. And all of his citations

  194. are from that text.

  195. So,

  196. maybe he knew his audience

  197. so well,

  198. who were also most likely

  199. Hellenistic Jewish Christians,

  200. that he was using their text,

  201. but his familiarity with it

  202. probably means that it was also his.

  203. It was the text that he himself

  204. would have learned from.

  205. The book of Hebrews

  206. is a work of eloquent rhetoric.

  207. Eloquent rhetoric.

  208. So, the author makes a case

  209. and then spends the letter

  210. defending that case.

  211. Because of that,

  212. I like Apollos as the writer.

  213. I can't know this for sure,

  214. but I just like him.

  215. If I was going to say,

  216. I've got to pick one,

  217. that's my guy

  218. I'm going to pick.

  219. And this is because,

  220. and this is as complicated

  221. as my argument will be,

  222. and then I'll move on.

  223. Luke writes in Acts 18,

    Acts 18:24

  224. verse 24,

  225. Now a Jew named Apollos,

  226. a native of Alexandria,

  227. Hellenistic Jewish Christian,

  228. came to Ephesus.

  229. He was an eloquent man,

  230. competent in the Scriptures.

  231. And this phrase eloquent man

  232. was used to describe somebody

  233. who had been trained in rhetoric.

  234. So, we know that Apollos

  235. was a Hellenistic Jew.

  236. He was a Christian.

  237. And he had been trained in rhetoric.

  238. And Luke then tells us,

  239. verse 24,

  240. that he was competent

  241. in the Scriptures.

  242. What would have been

  243. Apollos' Scriptures?

  244. The Septuagint,

  245. that Greek translation

  246. of the Old Testament.

  247. That's it.

  248. That's why I like him for it.

  249. And not beyond.

  250. So, I will not refer to Apollos

  251. as the author.

  252. I will just say

  253. the writer of Hebrews.

  254. Now, this eloquence

  255. that's here used to describe Apollos

  256. can most certainly be used

  257. to describe the writer of Hebrews

  258. is persuasive speech or writing.

  259. I think we really quickly think

  260. of eloquence as beautiful speech.

  261. And it can be that.

  262. The book of Hebrews is that.

  263. But moreover,

  264. the word means persuasive writing.

  265. Sometimes beautiful writing

  266. is persuasive.

  267. But that's the point,

  268. is that the author of Hebrews

  269. is an eloquent writer.

  270. Has made the case

  271. very carefully

  272. and very well

  273. for the supremacy

  274. and finality

  275. of Jesus Christ.

  276. It's very likely

  277. that the writer of Hebrews

  278. was a trained man.

  279. He'd been trained in this art

  280. of being persuasive

  281. with words.

  282. But at the end of it all,

  283. he is unknown

  284. and obscure.

  285. We're just not sure.

  286. Let's talk a little bit

  287. about his audience.

  288. Again, as I said,

  289. I believe that these were

  290. Hellenistic Jewish Christians

  291. because of the use

  292. of the Septuagint.

  293. They were Greek-speaking Christians

  294. of Jewish descent.

  295. And these were

  296. Hellenistic Jewish Christians

  297. that had not seen Jesus

  298. but had heard the gospel

  299. and believed.

  300. This was a church

  301. that had been

  302. formed by

  303. those who had gone out

  304. to preach the good news

  305. of Jesus Christ.

  306. Hebrews 2, verse 1.

    Hebrews 2:1

  307. The writer says,

  308. Therefore,

  309. we must pay much closer attention

  310. to what we have heard

  311. lest we drift

  312. away from it.

  313. In other places

  314. in the New Testament,

  315. Paul will say things like

  316. what we have seen

  317. and heard.

  318. So it's most likely

  319. that they hadn't seen

  320. but they had heard.

  321. They had heard this good news

  322. and believed it

  323. and became Christians

  324. as such.

  325. We also believe,

  326. with the kind of certainty

  327. that we can have,

  328. that this group of Christians

  329. had an Italian

  330. locust,

  331. location,

  332. the center.

  333. They were somewhere

  334. in the realm

  335. of Italy.

  336. And there's some clues

  337. in the text

  338. that they were in

  339. an urban environment

  340. and so many will say

  341. likely they were somewhere

  342. in or around Rome.

  343. Hebrews 13, 24,

  344. the writer says,

  345. Greet all your leaders

  346. and all the saints.

  347. Those who come from Italy

  348. send you greetings.

  349. But we think

  350. he's referring to people

  351. who had been sent

  352. from them,

  353. who knew them,

  354. right,

  355. or sent from them

  356. to where he was

  357. are simply saying,

  358. oh hey,

  359. you're writing a letter

  360. back to them?

  361. Please let them know

  362. we said hello.

  363. So it's likely

  364. this is where

  365. they're located

  366. but once again,

  367. unknown

  368. and obscure.

  369. We're not really

  370. sure.

  371. Now we know

  372. a little bit more

  373. about the occasion

  374. but not the specifics

  375. of it.

  376. Why is the writer

  377. of Hebrews

  378. writing?

  379. Why is it that he

  380. thinks it's so important

  381. to develop

  382. such a beautiful work

  383. to convince them

  384. of the supremacy

  385. and finality

  386. of Jesus Christ?

  387. We know a bit

  388. about what was

  389. going on

  390. with them.

  391. We believe

  392. that this was

  393. a first century letter

  394. likely written

  395. before A.D. 70

  396. which is when

  397. the temple in Jerusalem

  398. was destroyed.

  399. And we believe

  400. this because

  401. he uses language

  402. speaking of the

  403. sacrificial system

  404. as if it's still

  405. happening.

  406. He doesn't speak

  407. of it in past tense.

  408. He speaks of it

  409. in present tense.

  410. And in A.D. 70

  411. when the temple

  412. was destroyed

  413. that service

  414. stopped.

  415. It no longer

  416. existed

  417. at that point.

  418. So Hebrews

    Hebrews 7:27

  419. chapter 7

  420. verse 27

  421. and 28

  422. he says

  423. he has no need

  424. speaking of Christ

  425. like those high

  426. priests

  427. to offer

  428. sacrifices daily

  429. first for his

  430. own sins

  431. and then for

  432. those of the

  433. people

  434. since he did

  435. this once for

  436. all when he

  437. offered up

  438. himself.

  439. For the law

  440. appoints men

  441. in their weakness

  442. as high priests

  443. but the word

  444. of the oath

  445. which came later

  446. than the law

  447. appoints a son

  448. who has been

  449. made perfect

  450. forever.

  451. So you see

  452. that present

  453. feeling to the

  454. text that he's

  455. writing there.

  456. So it likely

  457. happened

  458. this letter

  459. was written

  460. before the

  461. temple was

  462. destroyed.

  463. It also

  464. likely happened

  465. we don't know

  466. but probably

  467. after the

  468. Christian persecution

  469. under the

  470. Roman emperor

  471. Claudius.

  472. The Roman

  473. historian

  474. Suetonius

  475. wrote in

  476. Life of the

  477. Deified

  478. Claudius

  479. quote

  480. there were

  481. riots in

  482. the Jewish

  483. quarter

  484. at the

  485. instigation

  486. of

  487. Crestus

  488. as a result

  489. Claudius

  490. expelled

  491. the Jews

  492. from Rome.

  493. Modern

  494. historians

  495. widely agree

  496. that

  497. Crestus

  498. is a

  499. reference

  500. to Christ.

  501. It's a

  502. mishearing

  503. it's a

  504. Romanization

  505. of the

  506. word

  507. Christ.

  508. And so

  509. this Roman

  510. historian

  511. tells us

  512. that there

  513. was a

  514. time we

  515. think

  516. around

  517. AD

  518. 49

  519. when

  520. Jewish

  521. Christians

  522. were

  523. expelled

  524. from Rome.

  525. So that

  526. may place

  527. this group

  528. having already

  529. bore up

  530. under some

  531. persecution

  532. as we'll

  533. see in a

  534. moment

  535. sent out

  536. of Rome

  537. possibly

  538. living still

  539. in an

  540. urban

  541. environment

  542. on the

  543. edges

  544. of

  545. their

  546. suburban

  547. Christians.

  548. They were

  549. a suffering

  550. group of

  551. Christians

  552. and they

  553. would

  554. suffer

  555. further.

  556. It's the

  557. purpose of

  558. the very

  559. writing of

  560. this letter.

  561. It's a

  562. very pastoral

  563. work.

  564. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:32

  565. chapter 10

  566. verse 32

  567. and following

  568. but recall

  569. the former

  570. days

  571. possibly

  572. these

  573. days

  574. under

  575. Claudius

  576. when

  577. after you

  578. were

  579. enlightened

  580. you

  581. endured

  582. a hard

  583. struggle

  584. with

  585. sufferings

  586. sometimes

  587. being publicly

  588. exposed to

  589. reproach

  590. and affliction

  591. and sometimes

  592. being partners

  593. with those

  594. so treated

  595. for you

  596. had compassion

  597. on those

  598. in prison

  599. and you

  600. joyfully

  601. accepted

  602. the plundering

  603. of your

  604. property

  605. since you

  606. knew that

  607. you

  608. yourselves

  609. had a

  610. better

  611. possession

  612. and

  613. an

  614. abiding

  615. one.

  616. Part of

  617. his

  618. writing

  619. to convince

  620. them of

  621. the supremacy

  622. of Christ

  623. is to

  624. remind

  625. them

  626. that they

  627. also

  628. believed

  629. in the

  630. supremacy

  631. of Christ.

  632. That they

  633. had suffered

  634. and in the

  635. process of

  636. suffering

  637. had lost

  638. property.

  639. Possibly

  640. they were

  641. driven

  642. out of

  643. Rome

  644. altogether.

  645. And then

  646. they would

  647. suffer

  648. further.

  649. The author

  650. writes

  651. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:4

  652. chapter 12

  653. verse 4

  654. In your

  655. struggle

  656. against sin

  657. you have

  658. not yet

  659. resisted

  660. to the

  661. point of

  662. shedding

  663. your blood.

  664. It would

  665. seem

  666. there's a

  667. hint

  668. there

  669. that no

  670. one had

  671. yet been

  672. martyred

  673. for their

  674. faith

  675. but that

  676. this was

  677. coming

  678. their way.

  679. So we

  680. see there's

  681. a great

  682. deal of

  683. suffering

  684. that has

  685. happened

  686. to these

  687. Hellenistic

  688. Jewish

  689. Christians

  690. and we're

  691. going to

  692. see in

  693. our study

  694. of it

  695. that the

  696. temptation

  697. for them

  698. then was

  699. to simply

  700. go back

  701. to Judaism.

  702. This had

  703. been accepted

  704. by Rome

  705. and there

  706. was no

  707. persecution

  708. for those

  709. who worshipped

  710. God in

  711. that way.

  712. It was

  713. Christ followers

  714. who were

  715. being persecuted.

  716. It was

  717. Christ followers

  718. as Jesus

  719. said

  720. who were

  721. suffering

  722. the way

  723. he suffered.

  724. They were

  725. the ones

  726. who were

  727. filling up

  728. what was

  729. lacking

  730. in the

  731. afflictions

  732. of Christ.

  733. So there

  734. was this

  735. temptation

  736. to say

  737. oh but

  738. the old

  739. ways

  740. weren't

  741. too far

  742. off the

  743. mark

  744. were they?

  745. And the

  746. writer of

  747. Hebrews

  748. says

  749. absolutely

  750. you cannot

  751. go back

  752. you know

  753. this Christ

  754. and he is

  755. supreme

  756. and he is

  757. final.

  758. So

  759. at the end

  760. though we

  761. don't know

  762. the specific

  763. circumstances

  764. verses

  765. and so

  766. it is

  767. still a

  768. bit

  769. unknown

  770. and

  771. obscure.

  772. Even the

  773. literary

  774. genre

  775. of this

  776. letter

  777. is a

  778. bit of

  779. a

  780. head

  781. scratcher.

  782. I would

  783. suggest

  784. to you

  785. that it is

  786. written

  787. more

  788. as a

  789. sermon

  790. than as

  791. a letter.

  792. In fact

  793. it kind of

  794. starts out

  795. that way.

  796. You see

  797. all of

  798. Paul's

  799. letters

  800. begin

  801. with a

  802. greeting.

  803. This

  804. does not.

  805. There is

  806. no greeting

  807. whatsoever.

  808. It just

  809. launches

  810. right in

  811. to the

  812. discourse.

  813. And it

  814. remains

  815. at this

  816. pace

  817. almost

  818. to the

  819. very

  820. end.

  821. All the

  822. way through

  823. chapter 13

  824. and verse

  825. 21.

  826. And then

  827. there seems

  828. to be this

  829. postscript

  830. added to

  831. it.

  832. Like,

  833. oh and

  834. by the

  835. way,

  836. goodbye.

  837. Seems

  838. to be the

  839. way that

  840. it's

  841. written.

  842. So this

  843. man who's

  844. most likely

  845. trained in

  846. this

  847. rhetoric,

  848. unable to

  849. be with

  850. them and

  851. speak these

  852. words,

  853. wrote the

  854. words down.

  855. It's like

  856. a sermon

  857. manuscript.

  858. And I

  859. am so

  860. encouraged by

  861. that possibility

  862. because most

  863. of the

  864. preaching we

  865. have recorded

  866. in the

  867. Bible are

  868. very short

  869. presentations.

  870. Oh,

  871. I love

  872. that there's

  873. a 13

  874. chapter one

  875. now.

  876. It's

  877. pretty

  878. fantastic.

  879. It helps

  880. me preach

  881. longer than

  882. 45 minutes

  883. to make a

  884. case for

  885. such a

  886. thing.

  887. Again,

  888. there's a

  889. thesis,

  890. right?

  891. The supremacy

  892. and finality

  893. of Jesus

  894. Christ,

  895. which he

  896. lays out

  897. in verses

  898. one through

  899. four.

  900. And then he

  901. goes on

  902. through the

  903. rest of

  904. the text

  905. to defend

  906. what he's

  907. saying in

  908. those first

  909. four verses.

  910. And then he

  911. ends with

  912. chapter 13

  913. and verse

  914. 22,

  915. I appeal to

  916. you brothers,

  917. bear with my

  918. word of

  919. exhortation,

  920. for I have

  921. written to

  922. you briefly.

  923. So he

  924. even calls

  925. what he's

  926. written a

  927. word of

  928. exhortation.

  929. He uses

  930. the Bible

  931. to make

  932. his case.

  933. Very

  934. sermon-esque

  935. in that

  936. sense.

  937. He is

  938. appealing to

  939. what we

  940. now call

  941. the Old

  942. Testament,

  943. what was

  944. their

  945. scripture

  946. in their

  947. day.

  948. And in

  949. doing so,

  950. he exposes

  951. both the

  952. unity and

  953. the disunity

  954. of the

  955. old and

  956. new

  957. covenants.

  958. We don't,

  959. as New

  960. Testament

  961. Christians,

  962. disregard the

  963. Old Testament.

  964. There's much

  965. continuity between

  966. the two.

  967. There's also

  968. discontinuity.

  969. And we

  970. should be

  971. careful and

  972. think through

  973. this very

  974. carefully.

  975. I think the

  976. book of

  977. Hebrews is

  978. going to

  979. serve us

  980. well as

  981. we work

  982. on that

  983. together.

  984. William Lane

  985. again.

  986. Hebrews is

  987. impregnated

  988. with the

  989. Old Testament.

  990. The writer

  991. makes vital

  992. use of the

  993. Old Testament

  994. text in

  995. developing

  996. his persuasive

  997. sections as

  998. well as

  999. those that

  1000. are more

  1001. theologically

  1002. oriented.

  1003. Every chapter

  1004. is marked

  1005. by explicit

  1006. or implicit

  1007. references to

  1008. the biblical

  1009. text.

  1010. The writer's

  1011. use of

  1012. scripture

  1013. expresses his

  1014. conviction

  1015. of the

  1016. continuity

  1017. between God's

  1018. speaking and

  1019. action under

  1020. the Old and

  1021. New Covenants,

  1022. which had

  1023. urgent implications

  1024. for Israel

  1025. and for the

  1026. church.

  1027. He

  1028. presupposes

  1029. both an

  1030. essential

  1031. unity and

  1032. a development

  1033. between the

  1034. old and

  1035. new economies

  1036. of redemption.

  1037. A detailed

  1038. knowledge of

  1039. the Old

  1040. Testament is

  1041. indispensable for

  1042. understanding what

  1043. the writer of

  1044. Hebrews is

  1045. endeavoring to

  1046. say.

  1047. He assumes

  1048. on the part

  1049. of his

  1050. audience a

  1051. deep

  1052. familiarity

  1053. with our

  1054. contents.

  1055. I don't

  1056. know that we

  1057. could say of

  1058. us that we

  1059. have a deep

  1060. familiarity

  1061. with the

  1062. Old Testament

  1063. text.

  1064. Hebrews is

  1065. going to help

  1066. us to become

  1067. more familiar

  1068. with it.

  1069. We're going to

  1070. have to do

  1071. some work

  1072. together because

  1073. the writer of

  1074. Hebrews assumes

  1075. a deep

  1076. familiarity.

  1077. He knows his

  1078. audience and

  1079. he knows that

  1080. he can both

  1081. explicitly and

  1082. implicitly quote

  1083. the Old Testament

  1084. text and just

  1085. keep right on

  1086. moving.

  1087. This would have

  1088. been read as

  1089. a single

  1090. sitting.

  1091. This was a

  1092. sermon.

  1093. And we're

  1094. going to

  1095. break it

  1096. up over a

  1097. year and

  1098. a half.

  1099. We've got

  1100. some work

  1101. out ahead of

  1102. us to

  1103. wring out

  1104. all that the

  1105. writer of

  1106. Hebrews intends

  1107. by God's

  1108. good hand

  1109. for us to

  1110. understand.

  1111. So imagine

  1112. for a moment

  1113. with me,

  1114. likely a

  1115. small church,

  1116. likely meeting

  1117. in a home

  1118. on the edge

  1119. of Rome,

  1120. having been

  1121. kicked out of

  1122. the city,

  1123. being tired,

  1124. beat down,

  1125. beleaguered in

  1126. their pursuit

  1127. of Christ.

  1128. They had

  1129. already suffered

  1130. much,

  1131. feeling a

  1132. temptation to

  1133. walk away from

  1134. this faith.

  1135. Some of them

  1136. we'll see in

  1137. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1138. 10 had already

  1139. stopped gathering

  1140. together with the

  1141. church.

  1142. They had just

  1143. ceased doing it

  1144. altogether.

  1145. This is a

  1146. tired group

  1147. of Christians.

  1148. And the word

  1149. goes out.

  1150. Hey, we

  1151. received a

  1152. letter from

  1153. the author

  1154. of Hebrews.

  1155. And so

  1156. they're gathered

  1157. together,

  1158. eager

  1159. expectation.

  1160. What is the

  1161. word that he's

  1162. bringing to

  1163. us?

  1164. We want to

  1165. hear.

  1166. God seems

  1167. to be silent.

  1168. What would you

  1169. say to us

  1170. from the text

  1171. to help us

  1172. at this time?

  1173. And somebody

  1174. stands up and

  1175. opens the

  1176. letter and

  1177. says,

  1178. long ago,

  1179. at many times

  1180. and in many

  1181. ways,

  1182. God spoke to

  1183. our fathers

  1184. by the

  1185. prophets.

  1186. But in these

  1187. last days,

  1188. he has spoken

  1189. to us

  1190. by his

  1191. son.

  1192. Beloved,

  1193. this is God's

  1194. word to

  1195. us.

  1196. It was

  1197. written for

  1198. his glory

  1199. and our

  1200. good.

  1201. We would

  1202. all do

  1203. well to

  1204. listen to

  1205. it in

  1206. order to

  1207. believe

  1208. its

  1209. promises

  1210. and obey

  1211. its commands.

  1212. Christians.

  1213. The writer of

  1214. Hebrews,

  1215. out of a

  1216. great love

  1217. for this

  1218. little

  1219. beat-down

  1220. beleaguered

  1221. church,

  1222. employs

  1223. his eloquence

  1224. to speak

  1225. of the

  1226. eloquence

  1227. of God.

  1228. Our

  1229. God

  1230. is a

  1231. God

  1232. who

  1233. speaks.

  1234. He is

  1235. not

  1236. silent.

  1237. In

  1238. Hebrews,

  1239. he uses,

  1240. our

  1241. God uses,

  1242. an

  1243. unknown

  1244. author

  1245. writing to

  1246. an

  1247. unknown

  1248. audience.

  1249. He uses

  1250. an

  1251. obscure

  1252. author

  1253. and an

  1254. obscure

  1255. church

  1256. to make

  1257. much

  1258. of

  1259. himself.

  1260. Our

  1261. God

  1262. is a

  1263. God

  1264. who

  1265. communicates

  1266. and he

  1267. communicates

  1268. convincingly

  1269. about

  1270. himself

  1271. that we

  1272. would

  1273. know

  1274. him.

  1275. What an

  1276. astounding

  1277. reality.

  1278. May we

  1279. make much

  1280. of him

  1281. as we

  1282. consider

  1283. this

  1284. little bit

  1285. of text

  1286. this

  1287. morning.

  1288. First,

  1289. let's

  1290. consider

  1291. the

  1292. eloquence

  1293. of God

  1294. in the

  1295. past.

  1296. The writer

  1297. of Hebrews

  1298. says,

  1299. long ago,

  1300. many times

  1301. and in

  1302. many ways,

  1303. God

  1304. spoke to

  1305. our fathers

  1306. by the

  1307. prophets.

  1308. God

  1309. says,

  1310. now I

  1311. don't

  1312. think the

  1313. writer of

  1314. Hebrews

  1315. intends to

  1316. leave this

  1317. little point

  1318. out,

  1319. but I

  1320. just want

  1321. to add,

  1322. not only

  1323. is there

  1324. a prophetic

  1325. eloquence,

  1326. God's

  1327. people to

  1328. hear from,

  1329. but there's

  1330. also a

  1331. cosmic

  1332. eloquence.

  1333. God

  1334. spoke the

  1335. world into

  1336. existence

  1337. and he

  1338. designed it

  1339. in such

  1340. a way

  1341. to say,

  1342. look at

  1343. me.

  1344. Here's the

  1345. creation

  1346. and it

  1347. exists to

  1348. worship

  1349. the

  1350. Creator.

  1351. Psalm 19

    Psalms 19:1–4

  1352. verses 1

  1353. through 4,

  1354. the heavens

  1355. declare the

  1356. glory of

  1357. God,

  1358. His

  1359. greatness,

  1360. His

  1361. grandeur,

  1362. and the

  1363. sky above

  1364. proclaims

  1365. His

  1366. handiwork.

  1367. Day to

  1368. day it

  1369. pours out

  1370. speech

  1371. and night

  1372. to night

  1373. reveals

  1374. knowledge.

  1375. There is

  1376. no speech,

  1377. nor are

  1378. there words

  1379. whose voice

  1380. is not

  1381. heard.

  1382. Their voice

  1383. goes out

  1384. through all

  1385. the earth

  1386. and their

  1387. words to

  1388. the end

  1389. of the

  1390. world.

  1391. In

  1392. them He

  1393. has set

  1394. a tent

  1395. for the

  1396. Son.

  1397. Our

  1398. God

  1399. speaks

  1400. cosmically

  1401. that we

  1402. would know

  1403. Him.

  1404. There's a

  1405. cosmic

  1406. eloquence

  1407. to our

  1408. God.

  1409. There's

  1410. also this

  1411. prophetic

  1412. eloquence.

  1413. At

  1414. many times

  1415. and in

  1416. many ways

  1417. God

  1418. spoke to

  1419. our

  1420. fathers

  1421. by the

  1422. prophet.

  1423. God

  1424. spoke to

  1425. Moses

  1426. at

  1427. Sinai

  1428. in

  1429. thunder

  1430. and

  1431. lightning

  1432. and

  1433. with

  1434. a

  1435. trumpeting

  1436. voice.

  1437. God

  1438. spoke

  1439. to

  1440. Elijah

  1441. at

  1442. Horeb

  1443. in

  1444. a

  1445. still

  1446. small

  1447. voice.

  1448. God

  1449. spoke

  1450. to

  1451. Ezekiel

  1452. in

  1453. visions.

  1454. God

  1455. spoke

  1456. to

  1457. Daniel

  1458. in

  1459. dreams.

  1460. God

  1461. appeared

  1462. to

  1463. Abram

  1464. in

  1465. human

  1466. form

  1467. and

  1468. to

  1469. Jacob

  1470. as

  1471. an

  1472. angel.

  1473. God

  1474. spoke

  1475. by

  1476. the

  1477. law,

  1478. by

  1479. warning,

  1480. by

  1481. exhortation,

  1482. by

  1483. type,

  1484. and

  1485. by

  1486. parables.

  1487. He

  1488. spoke

  1489. in

  1490. many

  1491. ways.

  1492. When the

  1493. prophets

  1494. prophesied,

  1495. they used

  1496. as many

  1497. varied

  1498. forms.

  1499. Direct

  1500. oracles,

  1501. questions

  1502. and answers,

  1503. bizarre

  1504. symbolic

  1505. acts,

  1506. sermons

  1507. and

  1508. mysterious

  1509. signs.

  1510. At

  1511. many

  1512. times

  1513. and

  1514. in

  1515. many

  1516. ways,

  1517. God

  1518. has been

  1519. declaring

  1520. to the

  1521. world,

  1522. I

  1523. am.

  1524. And

  1525. He

  1526. has been

  1527. telling

  1528. the

  1529. world

  1530. how

  1531. it

  1532. is

  1533. that

  1534. we

  1535. can

  1536. know

  1537. Him.

  1538. And

  1539. He

  1540. has

  1541. been

  1542. doing

  1543. this

  1544. in

  1545. the

  1546. Old

  1547. Testament

  1548. and

  1549. now

  1550. on

  1551. into

  1552. the

  1553. New

  1554. progressively.

  1555. He

  1556. has

  1557. been

  1558. revealing

  1559. Himself

  1560. ever

  1561. more

  1562. across

  1563. the

  1564. text

  1565. with

  1566. now

  1567. the

  1568. great

  1569. fulfillment,

  1570. the great

  1571. finality

  1572. in the

  1573. person

  1574. and

  1575. work

  1576. of

  1577. Jesus

  1578. Christ.

  1579. Many

  1580. times

  1581. and

  1582. in

  1583. many

  1584. ways.

  1585. And

  1586. consider

  1587. these

  1588. Hellenistic

  1589. Jewish

  1590. Christians

  1591. who had

  1592. this

  1593. Old

  1594. Testament

  1595. text

  1596. that

  1597. God

  1598. had

  1599. been

  1600. silent

  1601. for

  1602. many

  1603. years.

  1604. God

  1605. did

  1606. not

  1607. have

  1608. a

  1609. prophet.

  1610. The

  1611. book

  1612. was

  1613. closed

  1614. in

  1615. a

  1616. sense

  1617. and

  1618. then

  1619. with

  1620. Christ

  1621. it

  1622. reopened

  1623. and

  1624. God

  1625. roars

  1626. into

  1627. the

  1628. world

  1629. again.

  1630. Know

  1631. me

  1632. by

  1633. my

  1634. Son.

  1635. So

  1636. let's

  1637. consider

  1638. the

  1639. eloquence

  1640. of

  1641. God

  1642. in

  1643. the

  1644. present.

  1645. The

  1646. writer

  1647. of

  1648. Hebrews

  1649. says

  1650. but

  1651. in

  1652. these

  1653. last

  1654. days

  1655. He

  1656. has

  1657. spoken

  1658. and

  1659. there's

  1660. this

  1661. precious

  1662. conjunction

  1663. pay

  1664. attention

  1665. when you

  1666. see

  1667. the

  1668. conjunction

  1669. but

  1670. in

  1671. these

  1672. last

  1673. days

  1674. God

  1675. spoke

  1676. in

  1677. this

  1678. way

  1679. at

  1680. time

  1681. many

  1682. times

  1683. and

  1684. in

  1685. many

  1686. ways

  1687. but

  1688. no

  1689. more

  1690. now

  1691. God

  1692. has

  1693. spoken

  1694. in

  1695. his

  1696. son

  1697. God

  1698. spoke

  1699. he has

  1700. spoken

  1701. and

  1702. he

  1703. is

  1704. now

  1705. today

  1706. speaking

  1707. in

  1708. his

  1709. son

  1710. I

  1711. came

  1712. across

  1713. trying

  1714. to

  1715. search

  1716. for

  1717. the

  1718. lyrics

  1719. of

  1720. an

  1721. entirely

  1722. different

  1723. song

  1724. the

  1725. lyrics

  1726. to

  1727. a

  1728. hymn

  1729. that

  1730. we

  1731. should

  1732. probably

  1733. learn

  1734. called

  1735. God

  1736. is

  1737. spoken

  1738. by

  1739. the

  1740. prophets

  1741. by

  1742. a man

  1743. named

  1744. George

  1745. W

  1746. Briggs

  1747. please

  1748. somebody

  1749. tell me

  1750. if you

  1751. know

  1752. him

  1753. and

  1754. we

  1755. shouldn't

  1756. sing

  1757. a

  1758. song

  1759. I

  1760. love

  1761. the

  1762. lyrics

  1763. of

  1764. this

  1765. three

  1766. verses

  1767. he wrote

  1768. God

  1769. has

  1770. spoken

  1771. by

  1772. the

  1773. prophets

  1774. spoken

  1775. the

  1776. unchanging

  1777. word

  1778. each

  1779. from

  1780. age

  1781. to

  1782. age

  1783. proclaiming

  1784. God

  1785. the

  1786. one

  1787. the

  1788. righteous

  1789. Lord

  1790. mid

  1791. the

  1792. world's

  1793. despair

  1794. and

  1795. turmoil

  1796. one

  1797. firm

  1798. anchor

  1799. holding

  1800. fast

  1801. God

  1802. eternal

  1803. reigns

  1804. forever

  1805. God

  1806. the

  1807. first

  1808. and

  1809. God

  1810. the

  1811. last

  1812. second

  1813. verse

  1814. God

  1815. is

  1816. spoken

  1817. by

  1818. Christ

  1819. Jesus

  1820. Christ

  1821. the

  1822. everlasting

  1823. son

  1824. brightness

  1825. of

  1826. the

  1827. father's

  1828. glory

  1829. with

  1830. the

  1831. father

  1832. ever

  1833. one

  1834. spoken

  1835. by

  1836. the

  1837. word

  1838. incarnate

  1839. God

  1840. of

  1841. God

  1842. ere

  1843. time

  1844. was

  1845. born

  1846. light

  1847. of

  1848. light

  1849. to

  1850. earth

  1851. descending

  1852. Christ

  1853. as

  1854. God

  1855. in

  1856. human

  1857. form

  1858. verse

  1859. three

  1860. God

  1861. is

  1862. speaking

  1863. by

  1864. the

  1865. spirit

  1866. speaking

  1867. to

  1868. our

  1869. hearts

  1870. again

  1871. in

  1872. the

  1873. age

  1874. long

  1875. word

  1876. declaring

  1877. God's

  1878. own

  1879. message

  1880. now

  1881. as

  1882. then

  1883. through

  1884. the

  1885. rise

  1886. and

  1887. fall

  1888. of

  1889. nations

  1890. one

  1891. sure

  1892. faith

  1893. is

  1894. standing

  1895. fast

  1896. God

  1897. abides

  1898. the

  1899. word

  1900. unchanging

  1901. God

  1902. the

  1903. first

  1904. and

  1905. God

  1906. the

  1907. last

  1908. good

  1909. he's

  1910. spoken

  1911. to

  1912. us

  1913. in

  1914. the

  1915. present

  1916. in

  1917. these

  1918. days

  1919. by

  1920. his

  1921. son

  1922. and

  1923. now

  1924. the

  1925. spirit

  1926. testifies

  1927. through

  1928. the

  1929. scripture

  1930. to

  1931. his

  1932. son

  1933. we

  1934. have

  1935. such

  1936. a

  1937. treasure

  1938. !

  1939. in it

  1940. God

  1941. and

  1942. so

  1943. lastly

  1944. the

  1945. eloquence

  1946. of

  1947. God

  1948. in

  1949. the

  1950. person

  1951. of

  1952. Christ

  1953. he

  1954. has

  1955. spoken

  1956. in

  1957. the

  1958. last

  1959. days

  1960. by

  1961. his

  1962. son

  1963. this

  1964. could

  1965. be

  1966. translated

  1967. in

  1968. his

  1969. son

  1970. a

  1971. familiar

  1972. text

  1973. to you

  1974. may be

  1975. John

  1976. chapter

  1977. one

  1978. verses

  1979. one

  1980. and

  1981. two

  1982. and

  1983. then

  1984. I'll

  1991. the

  1994. the

  1995. word

  1996. was

  1997. with

  1998. God

  1999. and

  2000. the

  2001. word

  2002. was

  2003. God

  2004. he

  2005. was

  2006. in

  2007. the

  2008. beginning

  2009. with

  2010. God

  2011. in

  2014. and

  2015. the

  2019. and

  2020. dwelt

  2021. among

  2022. us

  2023. and

  2024. we

  2025. have

  2026. seen

  2027. his

  2028. glory

  2029. glory

  2030. as

  2031. of

  2032. the

  2033. only

  2034. son

  2035. from

  2036. the

  2037. father

  2038. full

  2039. of

  2040. grace

  2041. and

  2042. truth

  2043. here

  2044. in

  2045. our

  2046. English

  2047. text

  2048. the

  2049. word

  2050. translated

  2051. word

  2052. is

  2053. the

  2054. Greek

  2055. word

  2056. !

  2057. It's

  2058. a

  2059. manifestation

  2060. of

  2061. it's

  2062. a

  2063. representation

  2064. of

  2065. the

  2066. thing

  2067. that

  2068. it

  2069. speaks

  2070. to

  2071. you

  2072. could

  2073. think

  2074. also

  2075. in

  2076. terms

  2077. of

  2078. word

  2079. being

  2080. a

  2081. good

  2082. word

  2083. to

  2084. put

  2085. in

  2086. this

  2087. place

  2088. but

  2089. you

  2090. could

  2091. also

  2092. think

  2093. in

  2094. terms

  2095. of

  2096. communication

  2097. or

  2098. eloquence

  2099. God

  2100. has

  2101. spoken

  2102. by

  2103. his

  2104. son

  2105. he

  2106. has

  2107. communicated

  2108. to

  2109. us

  2110. eloquently

  2111. by

  2112. his

  2114. God's

  2115. desire

  2116. to

  2117. make

  2118. himself

  2119. known

  2120. he

  2121. did

  2122. most

  2123. fully

  2124. he

  2125. communicated

  2126. that

  2127. to

  2128. us

  2129. in

  2130. Jesus

  2131. Christ

  2132. and

  2133. so

  2134. I

  2135. just

  2136. want

  2137. to

  2138. reread

  2139. John

    John 1:1

  2149. I'm

  2150. going

  2151. to

  2152. replace

  2153. the

  2155. word

  2156. with

  2157. the

  2163. I

  2164. just want

  2165. you to

  2166. hear it

  2167. this

  2169. just

  2170. Christ

  2171. in

  2172. the

  2174. was

  2175. the

  2176. eloquent

  2177. !

  2178. the

  2179. eloquent

  2180. !

  2181. communication

  2182. was

  2183. with

  2184. God

  2185. and

  2186. the

  2209. we

  2210. have

  2211. seen

  2212. his

  2213. glory

  2214. glory

  2215. as

  2216. of

  2217. the

  2218. only

  2219. son

  2220. from

  2221. the

  2222. father

  2223. full

  2224. of

  2225. grace

  2226. and

  2227. truth

  2228. see

  2229. beloved

  2230. we

  2231. are

  2232. created

  2233. for

  2234. worship

  2235. this

  2236. intrinsic

  2237. it

  2238. is

  2239. built

  2240. into

  2241. us

  2242. worship

  2243. is

  2244. inevitable

  2245. you

  2246. will

  2247. worship

  2248. something

  2249. things

  2250. you'll

  2251. worship

  2252. others

  2253. we

  2254. have

  2255. a

  2256. whole

  2257. culture

  2258. built

  2259. on

  2260. that

  2261. people

  2262. are

  2263. famous

  2264. for

  2265. being

  2266. famous

  2267. you'll

  2268. worship

  2269. yourself

  2270. all the

  2271. various

  2272. manifestations

  2273. of

  2274. who

  2275. you

  2276. think

  2277. you

  2278. should

  2279. be

  2280. or

  2281. what

  2282. you

  2283. deserve

  2284. you'll

  2285. worship

  2286. a

  2287. job

  2288. you'll

  2289. worship

  2290. a sports

  2291. team

  2292. you'll

  2293. worship

  2294. a

  2295. political

  2296. ideology

  2297. worship

  2298. is

  2299. inevitable

  2300. but

  2301. worship

  2302. that

  2303. is

  2304. not

  2305. placed

  2306. fully

  2307. on

  2308. God

  2309. himself

  2310. the

  2311. creator

  2312. is

  2313. called

  2314. idolatry

  2315. it's

  2316. called

  2317. idolatry

  2318. the

  2319. worship

  2320. of

  2321. lesser

  2322. things

  2323. and

  2324. it

  2325. is

  2326. damning

  2327. for

  2328. us

  2329. and

  2330. it

  2331. is

  2332. heartbreaking

  2333. to

  2334. God

  2335. we

  2336. were

  2337. created

  2338. to

  2339. be

  2340. worshipers

  2341. of

  2342. God

  2343. his

  2344. creation

  2345. singing

  2346. his

  2347. praise

  2348. as

  2349. the

  2350. rest

  2351. of

  2352. creation

  2353. does

  2354. but

  2355. we

  2356. as

  2357. humans

  2358. marred

  2359. by

  2360. sin

  2361. turn

  2362. away

  2363. from

  2364. the

  2365. creator

  2366. God

  2367. and

  2368. turn

  2369. to

  2370. lesser

  2371. worship

  2372. there

  2373. is

  2374. no

  2375. higher

  2376. good

  2377. for

  2378. man

  2379. than

  2380. he

  2381. would

  2382. worship

  2383. the

  2384. one

  2385. who

  2386. created

  2387. him

  2388. God

  2389. gives

  2390. this

  2391. to

  2392. us

  2393. in

  2394. so

  2395. many

  2396. ways

  2397. communicates

  2398. it

  2399. to

  2400. us

  2401. in

  2402. so

  2403. many

  2404. ways

  2405. because

  2406. he

  2407. loves

  2408. us

  2409. he

  2410. knows

  2411. the

  2412. best

  2413. thing

  2414. for

  2415. us

  2416. is

  2417. to

  2418. orient

  2419. our

  2420. worship

  2421. as

  2422. it

  2423. should

  2424. be

  2425. oriented

  2426. fix it

  2427. firmly

  2428. on

  2429. him

  2430. Jonathan Edwards

  2431. once wrote

2432. and this is on the front of your bulletin

  2433. in very tiny font

2434. thank you Andy for making this fit

  2435. he wrote

  2436. God is the highest

  2437. good

  2438. of the reasonable

  2439. creature

  2440. the enjoyment

  2441. of him

  2442. is our

  2443. proper

  2444. and this

  2445. the only

  2446. happiness

  2447. with which

  2448. our souls

  2449. can be

  2450. satisfied

  2451. all of the

  2452. idols

  2453. will fail

  2454. us

  2455. at some

  2456. point

  2457. God

  2458. is the

  2459. only

  2460. one

  2461. that

  2462. will

  2463. satisfy

  2464. to

  2465. go

  2466. to

  2467. heaven

  2468. fully

  2469. to enjoy

  2470. God

  2471. is

  2472. infinitely

  2473. better

  2474. than the

  2475. most

  2476. pleasant

  2477. accommodations

  2478. here

  2479. better than

  2480. fathers and mothers

  2481. husbands

  2482. wives or

  2483. children

  2484. or the

  2485. company

  2486. of any

  2487. or all

  2488. earthly

  2489. friends

  2490. these

  2491. are but

  2492. shadows

  2493. but the

  2494. enjoyment of

  2495. God

  2496. is the

  2497. substance

  2498. these

  2499. are but

  2500. scattered

  2501. beings

  2502. but God

  2503. is the

  2504. sun

  2505. these

  2506. are but

  2507. streams

  2508. but God

  2509. is the

  2510. fountain

  2511. these

  2512. are but

  2513. drops

  2514. but God

  2515. is the

  2516. ocean

  2517. infinitely

  2518. greater

  2519. infinitely

  2520. worthy

  2521. of all

  2522. of our

  2523. worship

  2524. I want

  2525. to read

  2526. now

  2527. John

    John 1:18

  2528. chapter

  2529. 1

  2530. verse

  2531. 18

  2532. no one

  2533. has ever

  2534. seen

  2535. God

  2536. the only

  2537. God

  2538. he's talking

  2539. about the

  2540. word

  2541. there

  2542. the eloquent

  2543. !

  2544. communication

  2545. Jesus

  2546. Christ

  2547. who is

  2548. at the

  2549. father's

  2550. side

  2551. he

  2552. has

  2553. made

  2554. him

  2555. known

  2556. we can

  2557. know

  2558. God

  2559. and we

  2560. can worship

  2561. him rightly

  2562. because

  2563. God has

  2564. spoken to

  2565. us in

  2566. these last

  2567. days

  2568. by

  2569. his

  2570. son

  2571. my

  2572. hope

  2573. for our

  2574. study

  2575. of

  2576. Hebrews

  2577. I

  2578. hope

  2579. that we

  2580. would

  2581. greater

  2582. appreciate

  2583. both

  2584. the

  2585. continuity

  2586. and

  2587. the

  2588. discontinuity

  2589. of the

  2590. old

  2591. and new

  2592. covenants

  2593. and

  2594. therefore

  2595. the

  2596. old

  2597. and

  2598. new

  2599. testaments

  2600. that the

  2601. scripture

  2602. would become

  2603. more

  2604. precious

  2605. to us

  2606. because

  2607. God

  2608. has

  2609. spoken

  2610. to us

  2611. by it

  2612. it is

  2613. this

  2614. book

  2615. that gives

  2616. testimony

  2617. to who

  2618. Christ

  2619. is

  2620. we don't

  2621. worship

  2622. the Bible

  2623. but we

  2624. worship

  2625. the

  2626. Christ

  2627. of

  2628. the

  2629. Bible

  2630. it's

  2631. a

  2632. precious

  2633. thing

  2634. to those

  2635. who

  2636. follow

  2637. Jesus

  2638. secondly

  2639. I hope

  2640. that we

  2641. would

  2642. greater

  2643. love

  2644. the

  2645. risen

  2646. Christ

  2647. that we

  2648. would

  2649. greater

  2650. love

  2651. the

  2652. risen

  2653. Christ

  2654. that we

  2655. would

  2656. so

  2657. love

  2658. the

  2659. risen

  2660. Christ

  2661. that we

  2662. would

  2663. worship

  2664. him

  2665. with

  2666. greater

  2667. fervor

  2668. in the

  2669. face

  2670. of

  2671. opposition

  2672. that we

  2673. would be

  2674. a people

  2675. who

  2676. persevere

  2677. to the

  2678. end

  2679. for the

  2680. glory

  2681. of God

  2682. this

  2683. is

  2684. the

  2685. goal

  2686. of the

  2687. writer

  2688. of

  2689. Hebrews

  2690. he

  2691. is

  2692. saying

  2693. to

  2694. these

  2695. people

  2696. Christ

  2697. is

  2698. better

  2699. he

  2700. is

  2701. supreme

  2702. don't

  2703. give

  2704. up

  2705. press

  2706. on

  2707. to

  2708. the

  2709. end

  2710. there's

  2711. a

  2712. great

  2713. glory

  2714. that

  2715. awaits

  2716. you

  2717. don't

  2718. look

  2719. for

  2720. ease

  2721. and

  2722. comfort

  2723. in

  2724. this

  2725. world

  2726. look

  2727. for

  2728. Christ

  2729. because

  2730. in

  2731. him

  2732. God

  2733. has

  2734. spoken

  2735. I

  2736. want

  2737. to

  2738. conclude

  2739. with a

  2740. small

  2741. anecdote

  2742. I'm

  2743. reading

  2744. now to

  2745. our

  2746. boys

  2747. the

  2748. Chronicles

  2749. of

  2750. Narnia

  2751. we've

  2752. read

  2753. the

  2754. Lion

  2755. the

  2756. Witch

  2757. and

  2758. the

  2759. Wardrobe

  2760. and

  2761. we've

  2762. just

  2763. finished

  2764. reading

  2765. Prince

  2766. Caspian

  2767. and

  2768. yes

  2769. in

  2770. that

  2771. order

  2772. because

  2773. it's

  2774. the

  2775. published

  2776. order

  2777. and

  2778. it's

  2779. the

  2780. right

  2781. way

  2782. to

  2783. read

  2784. it

  2785. I

  2786. stand

  2787. by

  2788. that

  2789. without

  2790. apology

  2791. and

  2792. in

  2793. Prince

  2794. Caspian

  2795. the

  2796. Pevensies

  2797. the

  2798. children

  2799. if

  2800. you're

  2801. not

  2802. familiar

  2803. with

  2804. the

  2805. story

  2806. I'm

  2807. going

  2808. to

  2809. totally

  2810. confuse

  2811. you

  2812. there's

  2813. four

  2814. children

  2815. and

  2816. their

  2817. siblings

  2818. the

  2819. Lion

  2820. Witch

  2821. the

  2822. wardrobe

  2823. they're

  2824. drawn

  2825. back

  2826. to

  2827. Narnia

  2828. and

  2829. it's

  2830. many

  2831. thousands

  2832. of

  2833. years

  2834. on

  2835. the

  2836. throne

  2837. and

  2838. it's

  2839. very

  2840. far

  2841. into

  2842. the

  2843. book

  2844. it's

  2845. a little

  2846. over

  2847. halfway

  2848. into

  2849. the

  2850. book

  2851. before

  2852. the

  2853. character

  2854. in

  2855. C.S.

  2856. Lewis'

  2857. writing

  2858. that

  2859. represents

  2860. Christ

  2861. shows up

  2862. and his

  2863. name

  2864. is

  2865. Aslan

  2866. and he

  2867. is

  2868. a

  2869. lion

  2870. right

  2871. Lewis'

  2872. writing

  2873. is

  2874. just

  2875. fantastic

  2876. my

  2877. heart

  2878. skips

  2879. a beat

  2880. when I

  2881. see the

  2882. name

  2883. on

  2884. the

  2885. page

  2886. it

  2887. stands

  2888. out

  2889. on

  2890. the

  2891. page

  2892. oh

  2893. good

  2894. Aslan

  2895. is

  2896. on

  2897. this

  2898. page

  2899. this

  2900. is

  2901. fantastic

  2902. wonderful

  2903. writing

  2904. Aslan

  2905. doesn't

  2906. show up

  2907. until

  2908. much

  2909. later

  2910. in

  2911. the

  2912. story

  2913. and

  2914. it's

  2915. the

  2916. youngest

  2917. of

  2918. the

  2919. Pimansi

  2920. children

  2921. that

  2922. notices

  2923. him

  2924. first

  2925. she

  2926. sees

  2927. him

  2928. the

  2929. others

  2930. don't

  2931. see

  2932. him

  2933. finally

  2934. she

  2935. actually

  2936. encounters

  2937. him

  2938. and I

  2939. just

  2940. want

  2941. to

  2942. read

  2943. a

  2944. little

  2945. bit

  2946. to

  2947. you

  2948. Lewis

  2949. writes

  2950. she

  2951. rushed

  2952. do

  2953. was

  2954. that

  2955. she

  2956. was

  2957. kissing

  2958. him

  2959. and

  2960. putting

  2961. arms

  2962. as far

  2963. around

  2964. his

  2965. neck

  2966. as

  2967. she

  2968. could

  2969. and

  2970. burying

  2971. her

  2972. face

  2973. in

  2974. the

  2975. beautiful

  2976. rich

  2977. silkiness

  2978. of

  2979. his

  2980. mane

  2981. Aslan

  2982. Aslan

  2983. dear

  2984. Aslan

  2985. sobbed

  2986. Lucy

  2987. at

  2988. last

  2989. the

  2990. great

  2991. beast

  2992. rolled

  2993. over

  2994. on

  2995. his

  2996. side

  2997. so

  2998. that

  2999. Lucy

  3000. fell

  3001. half
