  1. I invite you to take your copy of God's Word and turn to Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  2. Our text for this morning will be Hebrews chapter 1, verses 2 and 3.

    Hebrews 1:2

  3. !

  4. To an unknown and obscure group of Hellenistic Jewish Christians, most likely, probably living

  5. on the edge of Rome, having been dispersed from Rome, but still living in an urban environment.

  6. Likely a small group of people having been pressed out of the synagogues, huddled together

  7. in a house.

  8. This group of Christians had suffered, and they would suffer.

  9. We don't know the exact nature of their suffering, but we know it was because of the name of Christ.

  10. And we get a bit of a taste of it in Hebrews chapter 10, verses 32 and 33.

    Hebrews 10:32

  11. The writer of Hebrews says,

  12. But recall the former days when after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle

  13. with sufferings.

  14. Sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners

  15. with those so treated.

  16. We read later in Hebrews chapter 12 that none of them had suffered yet to the point of shedding

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  17. blood.

  18. But the writer of Hebrews seems to be implying there that that day was coming.

  19. And so the writer of Hebrews very pastorally sends to them a letter that is sermonic in

  20. format.

  21. He states a thesis, and he spends the letter defending it.

  22. And he uses the Scripture to do so.

  23. The reason we think that he's a Hellenistic Jew, Greek-speaking Jew, and that these Christians

  24. are Hellenistic, Greek-speaking Jews, is that he cites only from the Septuagint, the Greek

  25. translation of the Old Testament.

  26. And he uses it in spades.

  27. The book of Hebrews is full of the Old Testament texts.

  28. And one of the reasons that we're studying the book of Hebrews is because the Old Testament,

  29. the Bible in total, but the Old Testament particularly, is under quite a bit of attack in our day.

  30. And so we want to talk about both the discontinuity and the continuity between the Old Testament

  31. and the New.

  32. This is an eloquent letter.

  33. William Lane, the respected New Testament scholar, stated the language of Hebrews constitutes

  34. the finest Greek in the New Testament.

  35. And the thesis that the author defends is the supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  36. He states that thesis in the first four verses.

  37. Last week, we looked at the first verse of chapter one and just a bit of the second verse and saw that the writer of Hebrews

  38. employs his eloquence to speak of the eloquence of God in the past.

  39. Verse one says,

  40. Long ago at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

  41. Many different ways he spoke by the prophets.

  42. The prophets then in turn relayed the message of God in many ways.

  43. And this is recorded in the Old Testament text.

  44. The eloquence of the writer of Hebrews also spoke.

  45. We saw last week to the eloquence of God in the present, he says at the beginning of verse two.

  46. But in these last days, he has spoken.

  47. Praise God.

  48. In these last days.

  49. And most think that he's referring to the age of the church.

  50. And third, we saw the eloquence of God in the person of Christ.

  51. In these last days, he has spoken to us by or in his son.

  52. We have a God who speaks in order to make himself known.

  53. Praise God.

  54. He is not a silent God.

  55. He is a speaking God that we might know him.

  56. He wants to be known.

  57. And he can be known as he has spoken to us by his son.

  58. So imagine with me, if you will, once again, if you were here last week for the first time, if not.

  59. A small, exhausted, suffering church.

  60. Having been enlightened, having been converted to faith in Jesus Christ, and have found no earthly pleasure from doing so.

  61. Nothing was going well for them by the standard of the world.

  62. And they've gathered together.

  63. They've heard this author has sent a letter to them.

  64. And they've gathered together to hear its reading and to be encouraged by it.

  65. Some of you may find this exercise of imagination difficult.

  66. Because you've not suffered for your faith.

  67. You've not pursued Christ in a way that makes you pleasant to those who are pursuing him and unpleasant to those who are not.

  68. Your life looks like the life of the world.

  69. No one has any need of rejecting you because you look just like them.

  70. Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3.12.

  71. Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

  72. If it is difficult for you to imagine this, and you are in Christ, if you are resolute to follow him, you will suffer.

  73. There will come a day, a very soon day, that you will suffer for proclaiming the name of Jesus.

  74. Some of you, I think many of you, have no difficulty whatsoever imagining being this people, beat down and tired.

  75. Because you've been faithfully pursuing this Christ.

  76. You've been sharing him with others.

  77. And people have not liked you for it.

  78. You have felt the pressing back of the world as you try to press the light into it.

  79. But be encouraged this morning by what the writer of Hebrews, God by his pen, would say to you.

  80. To encourage you to be perseverers to the end.

  81. So I'll read our text, Hebrews chapter 1, verse 2 and 3.

    Hebrews 1:2

  82. Before I do, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  83. It was written for his glory and our good.

  84. And we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey his commands.

  85. But in these last days, he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things,

  86. through whom also he created the world.

  87. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature.

  88. And he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

  89. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.

  90. And there it is.

  91. The supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  92. This is, in large, the thesis of this entire book.

  93. The writer will go on to defend it.

  94. He is more excellent than anything that you think is excellent.

  95. Place Christ above that thing because he is supreme and he is final.

  96. Kent Hughes, who's a contemporary pastor and wrote a really wonderful commentary on the book of Hebrews,

  97. said this,

  98. Christ is held up like a great jewel to the sunlight of God's revelation.

  99. And as the light courses through it, seven facets flash with gleaming brilliance.

  100. Christ's supremacy and finality is refracted for us to consider.

  101. So think about this, right?

  102. The writer of Hebrews is saying Christ is better.

  103. He is greater.

  104. He is above all things.

  105. And he is the final word for how it is we are to know God.

  106. And this text takes that reality and refracts it,

  107. splits it into seven things for us to consider together this morning.

  108. So let's give these seven refractions some titles to help us in our study.

  109. I'm going to read them to you quickly.

  110. And then, of course, I'll go through them each one by one with some expedience this morning.

  111. Christ is number one, inheritor.

  112. Number two, creator.

  113. Number three, sustainer.

  114. Number four, radiator.

  115. Number five, representer.

  116. Number six, purifier.

  117. And number seven, ruler.

  118. I know you'd stayed with me until representer.

  119. Number five, representer.

  120. Number six, purifier.

  121. Number seven, ruler.

  122. Number one, Christ is inheritor.

  123. In these last days, he has spoken to us by his son.

  124. In the middle there, verse two says, whom he, being God, appointed the heir of all things.

  125. It follows that because Jesus is the son of God, then he is also the heir of God.

  126. He will receive the inheritance of God.

  127. The writer of Hebrews identifies for us Jesus Christ as the anointed and son of Psalm 2,

  128. when he cites Psalm 2, 7 in verse 5 of chapter 1.

  129. Here's if you look down just a little bit.

  130. He's citing here from the Septuagint.

  131. Psalm 2, 7.

  132. You are my son.

  133. Today, I have begotten you.

  134. Going on in Psalm 2, the psalmist writes in verse 8,

  135. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,

  136. and the ends of the earth your possession.

  137. So let me read that to you together.

  138. Hebrews 1, 5, which is Psalm 2, 7, and into verse 8.

  139. You are my son.

  140. Today, I have begotten you.

  141. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, or inheritance,

  142. and the ends of the earth your possession.

  143. So Psalm 2 teaches us that the inheritance of Jesus Christ is the earth and its peoples.

  144. But Colossians chapter 1 and verse 6 takes us a bit further, doesn't it?

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  145. Oh, verse 16, excuse me.

  146. That all things, so the cosmos themselves were created for him.

  147. That's not an accident that the children are learning Colossians 1, 15 through 20 right now.

  148. But not only that, beloved, if you are in Christ Jesus, then you, specifically you, are his inheritance.

  149. Through the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on the cross, he has purchased you,

  150. and he treasures you as his inheritance.

  151. In Ephesians chapter 1 and verse 18, Paul tells the Ephesian believers that he always prays that they may know

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  152. what are the riches of his, Christ's, glorious inheritance in the saints.

  153. Paul prays that the Ephesian believers would understand that they are Christ's inheritance,

  154. that he treasures them as such.

  155. What an astounding truth.

  156. If you are in Christ, then you are treasured by him as in his inheritance.

  157. But not only are we Christ's inheritance, we are also his co-heirs.

  158. In Romans chapter 8 and verse 17, Paul calls us heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  159. So if Christ is the heir of all things, if he's the heir of God, all things belong to him.

  160. But as followers of Christ, we are found in Christ.

  161. And so we are also heirs.

  162. Amazing.

  163. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians chapter 3 verse 21 and following,

    1 Corinthians 3:21

  164. For all things are yours.

  165. Whether Paul or Apollos, Cephas or the world, or life or death, or the present, or the future,

  166. all are yours and you are Christ and Christ is God's.

  167. He makes the case in the opposite direction.

  168. Because Christ is God's, then all things are Christ's, and therefore all things are ours.

  169. Christ is the inheritor.

  170. Secondly, Christ is the creator.

  171. It makes sense that he inherits all things that he made.

  172. The end of verse 2, through whom also he created the world.

  173. God creating the world through Christ.

  174. Not only does Christ inherit all things, but he also created them.

  175. The Greek word here, translated world, is ionas.

  176. Probably not pronouncing it correctly.

  177. More literally, ages.

  178. Ages.

  179. More literally, ages.

  180. This is a wonderful word because it includes all things.

  181. Not only space, but also time.

  182. It's a very elastic word.

  183. It means more than just those things that we can see,

  184. but everything outside of that as well.

  185. Well, Brooke Foss Westcott, who's a 19th century British theologian,

  186. defines this Greek word as the sum of the periods of time,

  187. including all that is manifested in and through them,

  188. an order which exists through time developed in successive stages.

  189. He just says in a lot of words,

  190. the space-time continuum is what he is saying.

  191. This is what this word means.

  192. Through Christ, God created the space-time continuum

  193. and all that is contained within it.

  194. Astounding.

  195. An incredible reality.

  196. People have been guessing for ages

  197. at how it is that the universe came into existence.

  198. And they are guesses at best.

  199. All theories of knowledge have at their base some foundation.

  200. And for most, they are guesses.

  201. But for followers of Jesus Christ,

  202. we know exactly what that foundation is.

  203. It's Jesus himself.

  204. He created all things.

  205. Our universe is astounding.

  206. I hope the little thing I did with the kids

  207. was even a bit helpful to you.

  208. Let's just talk in larger terms.

  209. Our solar system is part of a galaxy called the Milky Way.

  210. Our galaxy is an average-sized spiral galaxy

  211. over 100,000 light-years across.

  212. It contains thousands of millions of solar systems.

  213. These numbers are staggering, right?

  214. It's about 100,000 light-years across,

  215. which is 600 trillion miles.

  216. This is a crazy thing.

  217. This is just our galaxy.

  218. We can see with modern telescopes

  219. about 100,000 million galaxies.

  220. 100,000 million galaxies.

  221. This is just what we can see in the universe

  222. with modern telescopes.

  223. Each galaxy contains 100,000 million stars.

  224. The average distance between these galaxies

  225. is 3 million light-years.

  226. It's an astounding reality

  227. of how big the universe is.

  228. And theoretic physicists say

  229. that it's expanding as well.

  230. This is included in this idea of ages.

  231. It's ever-expanding.

  232. What?

  233. The universe is absolutely astounding.

  234. And it was created by Christ,

  235. and it was created for Christ.

  236. If you have never seen images

  237. from the Hubble Space Telescope,

  238. I encourage you to go Google that this afternoon.

  239. The astounding beauty

  240. of the world in which we live.

  241. And it is screaming, right?

  242. Praise Jesus,

  243. the maker of all these things.

  244. The New Testament has quite a bit in it, right?

  245. Saying this very reality.

  246. John 1, verse 3.

    John 1:3

  247. All things were made through Him, Christ,

  248. and without Him was not anything made.

  249. That was made.

  250. 1 Corinthians 8, 6.

  251. Yet for us there is one God, the Father,

  252. from whom are all things,

  253. and for whom we exist.

  254. And one Lord, Jesus Christ,

  255. through whom are all things,

  256. and through whom we exist.

  257. Colossians 1, 16 in its totality.

  258. For by Him all things were created

  259. in heaven and on earth,

  260. visible and invisible,

  261. whether thrones or dominions

  262. or rulers or authorities,

  263. all things were created

  264. through Him and for Him.

  265. And Romans 11, verse 36.

    Romans 11:36

  266. For from Him and through Him

  267. and to Him are all things.

  268. To Him be glory forever.

  269. Amen.

  270. The cosmos were created

  271. that we might praise Christ.

  272. Everything that has been made

  273. was made for Him.

  274. We, those of us who are in Christ,

  275. are a new creation.

  276. We have been made new.

  277. Created and then recreated new

  278. for the praise of Christ.

  279. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5, 17.

  280. For if anyone is in Christ,

  281. he is a new creation.

  282. The old has passed away.

  283. Behold, the new has come.

  284. So Christ is creator.

  285. Third, Christ is sustainer.

  286. Again, verse 3.

  287. And He upholds the universe.

  288. Upholds the universe

  289. by the word of His power.

  290. Jesus Christ created all things

  291. and He sustains all things.

  292. I love that the author of Hebrews

  293. uses the word upholds.

  294. Not like Atlas upholding a static globe of stone.

  295. But He does it with His words.

  296. And it's not just the earth,

  297. it's the universe.

  298. This great expanse that we have just considered.

  299. He upholds all of this.

  300. He sustains all of it

  301. by the word of His power.

  302. He actively sustains

  303. by the word of His power.

  304. This means that Jesus says

  305. to the world,

  306. move like this.

  307. Behave like that.

  308. Rain here, snow there,

  309. and the world obeys.

  310. This means that nothing will cease to do

  311. exactly as it is told

  312. until Jesus says

  313. to do otherwise.

  314. He says orbit,

  315. and it orbits

  316. until He says stop.

  317. It continues to go

  318. just the way

  319. He commands it to go.

  320. Now,

  321. I want to go off point

  322. just for a sec.

  323. Well, it's on point,

  324. but just to make your head

  325. hurt a little bit.

  326. Many of you know

  327. that I really love

  328. Jonathan Edwards.

  329. Most will say

  330. he's the greatest theological mind

  331. that America has ever produced.

  332. He was rather brilliant,

  333. and he believed in a doctrine

  334. called continuous creation.

  335. And I'm just going to tell you

  336. a little bit about it

  337. and let your mind trip a little bit,

  338. and then we're going to get back

  339. to what we're talking about.

  340. But essentially it's this,

  341. that Jesus is continually

  342. speaking the world into existence.

  343. So even now,

  344. the fact that I exist

  345. is being sustained by the fact

  346. that Jesus is causing me to exist

  347. in successive moments.

  348. He wrote this.

  349. It is plain,

  350. this won't be plain to you,

  351. it's not to me.

  352. He says,

  353. this is Edwards for you,

  354. it is plain,

  355. nothing can exert itself

  356. or operate

  357. when and where

  358. it is not existing

  359. because

  360. what is past

  361. entirely ceases

  362. when present existence begins.

  363. It does no more

  364. coexist with it

  365. than it does

  366. any other moment

  367. that it ceased

  368. 20 years ago.

  369. They don't coexist,

  370. right?

  371. And essentially

  372. what he's saying is

  373. the past

  374. does not have the power

  375. to sustain

  376. that which is in the present

  377. or in the future.

  378. My present self

  379. doesn't have the ability

  380. to sustain

  381. my future self.

  382. He also said,

  383. God's upholding

  384. created substance

  385. or causing

  386. his existence

  387. in each successive

  388. moment

  389. is altogether

  390. equivalent

  391. to an immediate

  392. production

  393. out of nothing.

  394. He's speaking us

  395. into existence

  396. now

  397. out of nothing

  398. is what Edwards

  399. is postulating.

  400. At each moment

  401. because its existence

  402. at this moment

  403. is not merely

  404. in part from God

  405. but wholly from him

  406. and not in any part

  407. or degree

  408. from its antecedent existence.

  409. So exactly what he's saying is

  410. if Jesus were to stop speaking

  411. we would also cease to exist.

  412. That's hard to wrap

  413. your mind around.

  414. Edwards apparently

  415. had.

  416. That doesn't necessarily

  417. make it true

  418. but

  419. isn't it incredible

  420. to think

  421. about the very nature

  422. by which

  423. Jesus sustains

  424. the world

  425. by the word

  426. of his power.

  427. Whether or not

  428. this continuing

  429. creation

  430. thing is a reality

  431. doesn't

  432. minimize

  433. the fact

  434. that Jesus

  435. is upholding

  436. what is happening

  437. now

  438. is happening

  439. because

  440. of Jesus'

  441. mighty word.

  442. It's because

  443. of his sustaining

  444. work

  445. that we have

  446. our life

  447. and our being.

  448. If Jesus Christ

  449. has the power

  450. to sustain

  451. the world

  452. which he does

  453. then he

  454. also

  455. has the power

  456. to sustain

  457. our faith.

  458. Having made us

  459. new creations

  460. he has the power

  461. to continue

  462. in us

  463. this

  464. new

  465. creation.

  466. This is why

  467. Paul was able

  468. to say

  469. with such

  470. confidence

  471. to the

  472. Philippian

  473. believers

  474. in chapter 1

  475. verse 6

  476. of Philippians

  477. I am sure

  478. of this

  479. that he who

  480. began a good

  481. work in you

  482. will bring it

  483. to completion

  484. at the day

  485. of Christ.

  486. Nothing

  487. escapes him

  488. everything

  489. is upheld

  490. by the word

  491. of his power

  492. including

  493. our faith.

  494. What a confidence

  495. we have

  496. in our pursuit

  497. of him.

  498. Fourth

  499. Christ is

  500. radiator.

  501. Christ is

  502. radiator.

  503. He is the

  504. radiance

  505. of the glory

  506. of God.

  507. And

  508. he is the

  509. radiance

  510. of the glory

  511. of God.

  512. Radiance

  513. here

  514. in the

  515. English Standard

  516. Version

  517. is a

  518. better

  519. translation

  520. than the

  521. oft-used

  522. reflection.

  523. Some of you

  524. may have a

  525. Bible translation

  526. that says

  527. reflection

  528. and that

  529. doesn't make

  530. it a bad

  531. translation

  532. necessarily

  533. but in

  534. this case

  535. the word

  536. radiance

  537. is a

  538. better word

  539. for what's

  540. trying to be

  541. communicated

  542. here

  543. because the

  544. moon

  545. reflects the

  546. light of

  547. the sun

  548. the sun

  549. radiates

  550. that

  551. light.

  552. Jesus does

  553. not merely

  554. reflect

  555. God's

  556. glory.

  557. He is

  558. part and

  559. parcel

  560. of

  561. God's

  562. glory.

  563. This is

  564. speaking to

  565. Jesus'

  566. very being.

  567. He is

  568. the

  569. radiance

  570. of the

  571. glory

  572. of God.

  573. We are

  574. created

  575. as

  576. creation

  577. to reflect

  578. God's

  579. glory.

  580. But

  581. Christ

  582. as

  583. creator

  584. is

  585. part

  586. and

  587. parcel

  588. of

  589. God's

  590. glory.

    John 1:18

  592. chapter 1

  593. verse 18

  594. no one

  595. has ever

  596. seen

  597. God

  598. the only

  599. God

  600. referring

  601. to

  602. Jesus

  603. who is

  604. at the

  605. Father's

  606. side.

  607. He

  608. has

  609. made

  610. him

  611. known.

  612. Right?

  613. Radiated

  614. him

  615. out

  616. to us.

  617. Jesus

  618. is

  619. God.

  620. I'm

  621. always

  622. looking

  623. with the

  624. children

  625. for the

  626. specific

  627. answer

  628. of

  629. Jesus

  630. and

  631. when

  632. I

  633. say

  634. God

  635. I

  636. go

  637. yeah.

  638. Right?

  639. Yes.

  640. Because

  641. Jesus

  642. is

  643. God.

  644. The

  645. Nicene

  646. Creed

  647. 325

  648. AD

  649. this is

  650. on

  651. your

  652. bulletin

  653. this little

  654. excerpt

  655. from it

  656. says

  657. we

  658. believe

  659. in

  660. one

  661. Lord

  662. Jesus

  663. Christ

  664. the

  665. only

  666. Son

  667. of

  668. God

  669. begotten

  670. from the

  671. Father

  672. before

  673. all

  674. ages

  675. God

  676. from

  677. God

  678. light

  679. from

  680. light

  681. true

  682. God

  683. from

  684. true

  685. God

  686. begotten

  687. not

  688. made

  689. of

  690. the

  691. same

  692. essence

  693. as

  694. the

  695. Father

  696. this

  697. is

  698. what

  699. they're

  700. communicating

  701. right?

  702. This

  703. is

  704. an

  705. expansion

  706. of

  707. this

  708. idea

  709. of

  710. Jesus

  711. being

  712. the

  713. radiance

  714. of

  715. the

  716. glory

  717. of

  718. God

  719. right?

  720. He

  721. is

  722. God

  723. himself

  724. so

  725. when

  726. we

  727. see

  728. Jesus

  729. we

  730. see

  731. God

  732. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  733. chapter

  734. 1

  735. beginning

  736. of

  737. verse

  738. 15

  739. Jesus

  740. is

  741. the

  742. image

  743. of

  744. the

  745. invisible

  746. God

  747. so

  748. Christ

  749. is

  750. radiator

  751. Christ

  752. is

  753. also

  754. fifthly

  755. representer

  756. the

  757. middle

  758. there

  759. verse

  760. 3

  761. says

  762. and

  763. the

  764. exact

  765. imprint

  766. of

  767. his

  768. nature

  769. and

  770. this

  771. phrase

  772. balances

  773. out

  774. the

  775. previous

  776. phrase

  777. Christ

  778. as

  779. radiator

  780. and

  781. representer

  782. Jesus

  783. is

  784. God's

  785. radiance

  786. speaks

  787. to

  788. his

  789. oneness

  790. with

  791. the

  792. father

  793. Jesus

  794. is

  795. God

  796. Jesus

  797. as

  798. God's

  799. representer

  800. or

  801. imprint

  802. speaks

  803. to

  804. his

  805. distinctness

  806. as

  807. the

  808. son

  809. so

  810. the

  811. author

  812. of

  813. Hebrews

  814. gives

  815. us

  816. a

  817. taste

  818. an

  819. inkling

  820. of

  821. the

  822. mystery

  823. that

  824. is

  825. the

  826. trinitarian

  827. nature

  828. of

  829. God

  830. it

  831. is

  832. a

  833. confusing

  834. thing

  835. to

  836. think

  837. about

  838. God

  839. as

  840. one

  841. but

  842. three

  843. in

  844. one

  845. it

  846. is

  847. a

  848. thing

  849. that

  850. we

  851. cannot

  852. in

  853. our

  854. fight

  855. knightness

  856. fully

  857. understand

  858. every

  859. analogy

  860. I

  861. have

  862. ever

  863. heard

  864. is

  865. woefully

  866. lacking

  867. to

  868. this

  869. come

  870. and

  871. tell

  872. me

  873. your

  874. analogies

  875. later

  876. and

  877. if

  878. you

  879. have

  880. one

  881. I

  882. will

  883. appreciate

  884. it

  885. likely

  886. I

  887. will

  888. say

  889. nope

  890. and

  891. here's

  892. why

  893. the

  894. apple

  895. doesn't

  896. work

  897. states

  898. of

  899. water

  900. doesn't

  901. work

  902. he

  903. is

  904. always

  905. existing

  906. in

  907. one

  908. but

  909. he

  910. is

  911. also

  912. always

  913. existing

  914. as

  915. three

  916. in

  917. one

  918. but

  919. beloved

  920. this

  921. should

  922. move

  923. us

  924. toward

  925. odd

  926. speculation

  927. some

  928. kind

  929. of

  930. criticism

  931. of

  932. it

  933. but

  934. wow

  935. who

  936. is

  937. this

  938. God

  939. a

  940. God

  941. who's

  942. one

  943. but

  944. is

  945. three

  946. in

  947. one

  948. this

  949. is a

  950. mystery

  951. that

  952. I

  953. hope

  954. that

  955. you

  956. with

  957. me

  958. look

  959. forward

  960. to

  961. having

  962. unraveled

  963. for us

  964. in

  965. glory

  966. fully

  967. comprehending

  968. the

  969. trinitarian

  970. nature

  971. of God

  972. what an

  973. incredible

  974. thing

  975. to

  976. understand

  977. right

  978. so

  979. Christ

  980. is

  981. God

  982. but

  983. he

  984. is

  985. also

  986. distinct

  987. from

  988. God

  989. the

  990. father

  991. as

  992. God

  993. the

  994. son

  995. he

  996. is

  997. an

  998. imprint

  999. and

  1000. this

  1001. refers

  1002. as

  1003. phrase

  1004. to

  1005. the

  1006. image

  1007. on

  1008. a

  1009. coin

  1010. made

  1011. by

  1012. a

  1013. die

  1014. a

  1015. stamp

  1017. the

  1019. stamped

  1020. onto

  1021. a

  1022. coin

  1023. once

  1024. again

  1025. when

  1026. we

  1027. see

  1028. Jesus

  1029. we

  1030. see

  1031. God

  1032. we

  1033. know

  1034. how

  1035. God

  1036. thinks

  1037. we

  1038. know

  1039. how

  1040. God

  1041. speaks

  1042. we

  1043. know

  1044. how

  1045. God

  1046. feels

  1047. we

  1048. know

  1049. how

  1050. he

  1051. relates

  1052. !

  1053. to

  1054. mankind

  1055. God

  1056. has

  1057. spoken

  1058. to

  1059. us

  1060. by

  1067. Christ

  1077. after

  1078. making

  1079. purification

  1080. for

  1081. sins

  1082. our text

  1083. says

  1084. Christ

  1085. made

  1086. purification

  1087. for

  1088. sins

  1089. Jesus

  1090. Christ

  1092. the

  1093. supreme

  1094. priest

  1095. mediator

  1096. between

  1097. God

  1098. and

  1099. man

  1100. he

  1101. was

  1102. the

  1103. agent

  1104. of

  1105. the

  1106. purification

  1107. for

  1108. our

  1116. for

  1117. that

  1118. purification

  1119. he

  1120. offered

  1122. himself

  1123. he

  1124. is

  1125. the

  1126. supreme

  1127. priest

  1128. and

  1129. the

  1131. priest

  1132. priest

  1133. the

  1134. author

  1135. of

  1136. Hebrews

  1137. will

  1138. go

  1139. on

  1140. to

  1141. expand

  1142. on

  1143. both

  1144. of

  1145. those

  1146. realities

  1147. quite

  1148. extensively

  1149. we'll

  1150. get to

  1151. spend

  1152. a lot

  1153. of

  1154. time

  1155. thinking

  1156. about

  1157. this

  1158. together

  1159. in the

  1160. coming

  1161. months

  1162. but let

  1163. me read

  1164. to you

  1165. from

  1166. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1167. chapter

  1168. 10

  1169. beginning

  1170. in

  1171. verse

  1172. 11

  1173. and

  1174. following

  1175. the

  1176. author

  1177. says

  1178. and

  1179. every

  1180. priest

  1181. stands

  1182. daily

  1183. at his

  1184. service

  1185. offering

  1186. repeatedly

  1187. the same

  1188. sacrifices

  1189. which can

  1190. never take

  1191. away

  1192. sins

  1193. they're

  1194. insufficient

  1195. for

  1196. that

  1197. task

  1198. and so

  1199. verse 11

  1200. says

  1201. the priest

  1202. is constantly

  1203. doing this

  1204. work

  1205. right

  1206. this work

  1207. that isn't

  1208. sufficient

  1209. to take

  1210. away

  1211. to be

  1212. a finished

  1213. work

  1214. it's not

  1215. sufficient

  1216. for that

  1217. so it

  1218. has to

  1219. go on

  1220. and on

  1221. and on

  1222. and in

  1223. verse 12

  1224. the author

  1225. says

  1226. but when

  1227. christ

  1228. had

  1229. offered

  1230. for all

  1231. time

  1232. a single

  1233. sacrifice

  1234. for sins

  1235. he sat

  1236. down

  1237. at the

  1238. right hand

  1239. of god

  1240. waiting

  1241. from that

  1242. time

  1243. until his

  1244. enemy

  1245. should be

  1246. made a

  1247. footstool

  1248. for his

  1249. feet

  1250. for by a

  1251. single

  1252. offering

  1253. he has

  1254. perfected

  1255. for all

  1256. time

  1257. those

  1258. who are

  1259. being

  1260. sanctified

  1261. his

  1262. sacrifice

  1263. was a

  1264. complete

  1265. and final

  1266. sacrifice

  1267. for god's

  1268. people

  1269. for all

  1270. time

  1271. this is an

  1272. astounding

  1273. reality

  1274. right

  1275. what the

  1276. author of

  1277. hebrews is

  1278. trying to

  1279. explain

  1280. to his

  1281. original

  1282. audience

  1283. and to

  1284. us

  1285. is all

  1286. that's

  1287. encapsulated

  1288. in jesus's

  1289. final word

  1290. recorded in

  1291. john

    John 19 chapter mention

  1292. chapter

  1293. 19

  1294. it

  1295. is

  1296. finished

  1297. the

  1298. sacrificial

  1299. work that

  1300. was necessary

  1301. to atone

  1302. for our

  1303. sins

  1304. to purify

  1305. us

  1306. that we

  1307. might be

  1308. in

  1309. relationship

  1310. with god

  1311. is

  1312. finished

  1313. when christ

  1314. died

  1315. on the

  1316. cross

  1317. right

  1318. he paid

  1319. the full

  1320. penalty

  1321. he was

  1322. the

  1323. sufficient

  1324. sacrifice

  1325. romans

  1326. 6 10

  1327. paul says

  1328. for the

  1329. death

  1330. he died

  1331. he died

  1332. to sin

  1333. once

  1334. for all

  1335. a fully

  1336. sufficient

  1337. sacrifice

  1338. to accomplish

  1339. exactly

  1340. that which

  1341. it's intended

  1342. to accomplish

  1343. right

  1344. the salvation

  1345. of god's

  1346. church

  1347. for the

  1348. death

  1349. he died

  1350. to sin

  1351. once

  1352. for all

  1353. and then

  1354. paul in all

  1355. his inspired

  1356. brilliance

  1357. says but the

  1358. life he lives

  1359. right

  1360. he didn't

  1361. stay dead

  1362. but the

  1363. life he

  1364. lives

  1365. he lives

  1366. to god

  1367. right

  1368. toward god

  1369. for the

  1370. glory of

  1371. god

  1372. as he's

  1373. now

  1374. ascended

  1375. and seated

  1376. at his

  1377. right hand

  1378. so christ

  1379. is

  1380. purifier

  1381. this

  1382. speaks to

  1383. us

  1384. and it

  1385. should

  1386. speak

  1387. loudly

  1388. to us

  1389. about our

  1390. need of

  1391. him

  1392. if we're

  1393. ever to be

  1394. found right

  1395. with god

  1396. you've ever

  1397. felt the

  1398. weight of

  1399. your sin

  1400. carried the

  1401. guilt of

  1402. it as

  1403. you should

  1404. because you

  1405. are guilty

  1406. of your

  1407. sin

  1408. it should

  1409. cause us

  1410. to cry

  1411. out

  1412. for the

  1413. perfect

  1414. once for

  1415. all work

  1416. of christ

  1417. this

  1418. should

  1419. if we

  1420. are the

  1421. new

  1422. creation

  1423. cause us

  1424. to love

  1425. god's

  1426. sustaining

  1427. grace to

  1428. us

  1429. in christ

  1430. if we've

  1431. yet to

  1432. receive

  1433. this

  1434. mercy

  1435. it should

  1436. cause us

  1437. to flee

  1438. to christ

  1439. the perfect

  1440. sacrifice

  1441. christ is

  1442. purifier

  1443. and lastly

  1444. christ is

  1445. ruler

  1446. christ is

  1447. ruler

  1448. having been

  1449. sacrificed

  1450. once for

  1451. all

  1452. raised on

  1453. the third

  1454. day

  1455. he ascended

  1456. and he

  1457. sat down

  1458. our text

  1459. says he

  1460. sat down

  1461. at the

  1462. right hand

  1463. of the

  1464. majesty

  1465. on high

  1466. jesus christ

  1467. does not

  1468. have to

  1469. work as

  1470. the

  1471. levitical

  1472. priests

  1473. work

  1474. as i

  1475. said they

  1476. never

  1477. sat

  1478. they

  1479. were

  1480. continually

  1481. making

  1482. sacrifice

  1483. for the

  1484. sins

  1485. of israel

  1486. and all

  1487. of the

  1488. careful

  1489. instruction

  1490. for the

  1491. tabernacle

  1492. and then

  1493. the temple

  1494. there were

  1495. never

  1496. seats

  1497. there's

  1498. no need

  1499. for seats

  1500. if you

  1501. were working

  1502. in the

  1503. temple

  1504. you were

  1505. making

  1506. sacrifice

  1507. when you

  1508. cocked out

  1509. you went

  1510. home

  1511. but when

  1512. you were

  1513. there

  1514. you were

  1515. constantly

  1516. making

  1517. sacrifice

  1518. the writer

  1519. of hebrews

  1520. words are

  1521. absolutely

  1522. astonishing

  1523. here

  1524. don't

  1525. let this

  1526. be lost

  1527. on you

  1528. 21st century

  1529. american christians

  1530. his original

  1531. listeners would

  1532. have taken

  1533. such courage

  1534. from this

  1535. phrase

  1536. he sat

  1537. down at

  1538. the right

  1539. hand of

  1540. the majesty

  1541. on high

  1542. this is

  1543. massively

  1544. significant

  1545. they would

  1546. have remembered

  1547. at the

  1548. opening of

  1549. this letter

  1550. that jesus

  1551. is

  1552. sacrificial

  1553. work

  1554. is

  1555. finished

  1556. all that

  1557. it guarantees

  1558. will happen

  1559. because

  1560. it's

  1561. finished

  1562. all the

  1563. promises

  1564. of god

  1565. find their

  1566. yes

  1567. in christ

  1568. it

  1569. is

  1570. finished

  1571. this is

  1572. massively

  1573. significant

  1574. paul wrote

  1575. in romans

    Romans 3:21

  1576. chapter 3

  1577. verse 21

  1578. and 22

  1579. but now

  1580. the righteousness

  1581. of god

  1582. has been

  1583. manifested

  1584. apart from

  1585. the law

  1586. although the

  1587. law

  1588. and the

  1589. prophets

  1590. bear witness

  1591. to it

  1592. there's the

  1593. continuity

  1594. of the

  1595. old testament

  1596. and the

  1597. reason we

  1598. should

  1599. still use

  1600. it

  1601. the righteousness

  1602. of god

  1603. through faith

  1604. in jesus

  1605. christ

  1606. for all

  1607. who believe

  1608. finished

  1609. work

  1610. and now

  1611. we believe

  1612. in this

  1613. finished

  1614. work

  1615. and we're

  1616. granted

  1617. the

  1618. righteousness

  1619. of christ

  1620. it is of

  1621. great significance

  1622. that jesus

  1623. is at the

  1624. right hand

  1625. of the

  1626. majesty

  1627. on high

  1628. the right

  1629. hand

  1630. was the

  1631. place

  1632. of highest

  1633. honor

  1634. and

  1635. power

  1636. paul writes

  1637. in ephesians

  1638. 4 10

  1639. right as a

  1640. as a

  1641. parenthetical

  1642. he who

  1643. descended

  1644. being christ

  1645. is the one

  1646. who also

  1647. ascended

  1648. far above

  1649. all the

  1650. heavens

  1651. that he

  1652. might

  1653. fill

  1654. all

  1655. things

  1656. right

  1657. bring to

  1658. pass

  1659. everything

  1660. that his

  1661. death and

  1662. resurrection

  1663. guaranteed

  1664. would come

  1665. to pass

  1666. that he

  1667. would finish

  1668. the work

  1669. of the

  1670. church

  1671. and bring

  1672. heaven

  1673. down to

  1674. earth

  1675. in jesus's

  1676. session

  1677. sitting at

  1678. the right

  1679. hand

  1680. paul tells

  1681. us something

  1682. that he is

  1683. doing

  1684. specifically

  1685. for those

  1686. who believe

  1687. in him

  1688. so if you've

  1689. yet to be

  1690. encouraged

  1691. i hope you'll

  1692. find this of

  1693. great encouragement

  1694. to you

  1695. i know

  1696. that these

  1697. listeners of

  1698. this letter

  1699. would have

  1700. taken great

  1701. courage from

  1702. it they

  1703. would have

  1704. pressed on

  1705. they would

  1706. have

  1707. persevered to

  1708. the end

  1709. as they

  1710. heard just

  1711. these opening

  1712. comments

  1713. from the author

  1714. of this letter

  1715. paul tells

  1716. us romans

    Romans 8:31

  1717. chapter 8

  1718. verse 31

  1719. and following

  1720. just after a

  1721. grand explanation

  1722. of god's

  1723. elective

  1724. purposes

  1725. what then

  1726. shall we

  1727. say to

  1728. these

  1729. things

  1730. if god

  1731. is for

  1732. us

  1733. who can

  1734. be against

  1735. us

  1736. he who

  1737. did not

  1738. spare his

  1739. own son

  1740. but gave

  1741. him up

  1742. for us

  1743. all

  1744. how will

  1745. he not

  1746. also

  1747. with him

  1748. graciously

  1749. give us

  1750. all

  1751. things

  1752. who can

  1753. bring any

  1754. charge against

  1755. god's

  1756. elect

  1757. it is

  1758. god who

  1759. justifies

  1760. who is

  1761. to condemn

  1762. christ jesus

  1763. is the one

  1764. who died

  1765. more than

  1766. that

  1767. who was

  1768. raised

  1769. who is at

  1770. the right

  1771. hand of

  1772. god

  1773. so here's

  1774. this language

  1775. again

  1776. right

  1777. seated

  1778. at the

  1779. right hand

  1780. of god

  1781. and then paul

  1782. says

  1783. who indeed

  1784. is interceding

  1785. for us

  1786. beloved he is

  1787. praying

  1788. for us

  1789. he is

  1790. speaking

  1791. on our

  1792. behalf

  1793. to god

  1794. this is

  1795. astounding

  1796. astounding

  1797. truth

  1798. as he is

  1799. the ruler

  1800. and bringing

  1801. all things

  1802. to pass

  1803. he's doing

  1804. so by the

  1805. power of

  1806. spirit in

  1807. his people

  1808. and he is

  1809. praying

  1810. for us

  1811. so christ

  1812. is

  1813. inheritor

  1814. creator

  1815. sustainer

  1816. radiator

  1817. representer

  1818. purifier

  1819. and ruler

  1820. i hope you're

  1821. seeing the

  1822. supremacy

  1823. and the

  1824. finality

  1825. of jesus

  1826. christ

  1827. right

  1828. this is the

  1829. theme

  1830. right

  1831. this is the

  1832. ark

  1833. that's going

  1834. to rest

  1835. over the

  1836. top of

  1837. this

  1838. entire

  1839. letter

  1840. we're

  1841. going to

  1842. continue

  1843. to develop

  1844. it out

  1845. further

  1846. in the

  1847. coming

  1848. month

  1849. in closing

  1850. let me

  1851. repeat to

  1852. you my

  1853. hope for

  1854. our study

  1855. of the

  1856. book of

  1857. hebrews

  1858. number one

  1859. that we

  1860. would greater

  1861. appreciate

  1862. both the

  1863. continuity

  1864. and the

  1865. discontinuity

  1866. of the

  1867. old and

  1868. new

  1869. covenants

  1870. and therefore

  1871. the old and

  1872. new testaments

  1873. that our

  1874. scripture

  1875. right

  1876. the canon

  1877. all 66

  1878. books of it

  1879. will become

  1880. more precious

  1881. to us

  1882. as we study

  1883. this book

  1884. of the

  1885. bible

  1886. together

  1887. that it

  1888. would be

  1889. greater

  1890. concreted

  1891. in our

  1892. hearts

  1893. right

  1894. that this

  1895. is god's

  1896. inspired

  1897. inerrant

  1898. authoritative

  1899. sufficient

  1900. word

  1901. to us

  1902. and second

  1903. that we

  1904. would greater

  1905. love the

  1906. risen

  1907. christ

  1908. that we

  1909. would so

  1910. love the

  1911. risen christ

  1912. that we

  1913. would worship

  1914. him with

  1915. greater

  1916. fervor

  1917. in the

  1918. face of

  1919. opposition

  1920. that we

  1921. would be

  1922. a people

  1923. who

  1924. persevere

  1925. to the

  1926. end

  1927. for the

  1928. glory

  1929. of god

  1930. let's pray

  1931. together
