  1. If you will please take out your copy of God's Word and join me in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  2. An astute observer would note that this morning on your bulletin says that I'll be preaching a sermon on Hebrews chapter 2 verses 11 through 16.

    Hebrews 2:11–16

  3. And that was correct up until 5 a.m. this morning.

  4. So, the prominent theme of the book of Hebrews, which we are working through together normally on Sunday morning,

  5. is the supremacy and the finality of Jesus Christ.

  6. The letter written to the Hebrews by an unsure author, but a man certainly who was pastoral toward them,

  7. was written to a group of Hellenistic Jews who likely had been expelled from the Roman center and are living out on the outskirts.

  8. Likely a small group, likely a group huddled together in a home, opening up this letter to read it,

  9. and they had been tried.

  10. They had been hated for their devotion to Jesus Christ.

  11. And we pick up on that as a secondary theme of the text.

  12. That he's writing to these Christians to say to them,

  13. Jesus is the superior way.

  14. Don't be tempted in the midst of suffering to go back to Judaism or to turn to any of the Roman gods.

  15. Christ is supreme and He is final.

  16. He's the ultimate and final sacrifice.

  17. Christ is the way that we are made right with God.

  18. So, we're going to see this theme.

  19. We're going to see it picked up again and again and again throughout the book.

  20. And we are in the thick of it already here in Hebrews chapter 2.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  21. And I just want another week to work out the implications of verses 11 through 16 and then probably on into verses 17 and 18 next week.

  22. But, I do want us to also consider this idea of Christian suffering.

  23. I want to take a little more time on it and then we'll dive into Hebrews 2 again next week, Lord willing.

  24. To stop and to think in our American context.

  25. Are we called as Christians to suffer?

  26. And what does that look like?

  27. We are sold often a bill of prosperity in our country as Christ followers.

  28. And it is not the biblical gospel.

  29. So, it's good for us to take some time to consider that.

  30. In fact, most of my work this week was writing a massive introduction to that very end to get into the text.

  31. And so, this will be a bit of an introduction in that way.

  32. So, I want to look today at Colossians chapter 1 verses 24 through 27.

    Colossians 1:24–27

  33. And before I read it, I want to remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  34. It was written for His glory and for our good.

  35. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  36. And Paul writes to the church.

  37. Colossae.

  38. Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.

  39. And in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of His body.

  40. That is, the church.

  41. Of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you.

  42. To make the Word of God fully known.

  43. The mystery hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to His saints.

  44. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery,

  45. which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  46. Now there is so much good in these four verses.

  47. There is so much to be mined out of them.

  48. But, this morning I just have two points.

  49. And they are, number one, the aim of Paul's ministry.

  50. What was Paul working to accomplish?

  51. The aim of his ministry.

  52. And number two, the means of Paul's ministry.

  53. So first, the aim of Paul's ministry.

  54. We see this worked out throughout the text.

  55. He became a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ to make the Word of God fully known.

  56. He says in verse 26, it's the mystery hidden for ages and generations, but now revealed to His saints.

  57. Jesus Christ Himself, verse 27, Christ in you, the hope of glory.

  58. Paul is aimed at God's purpose in the world, which is to make Christ known amongst all peoples everywhere.

  59. The purpose of God in history is that the gospel of reconciliation spread to all the peoples of the world

  60. and yield God-centered, Christ-exalting churches.

  61. This is what he's working toward.

  62. You want to know, what is God's purpose in the world?

  63. It's this.

  64. The gospel of reconciliation spread to all peoples of the world and yield God-centered, Christ-exalting churches.

  65. People for His praise.

  66. This was the promise of the Old Testament.

  67. Psalm 22, verse 27 and 28 says,

    Psalms 22:27

  68. All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord,

  69. and all the families of the nations shall worship before you.

  70. For kingship belongs to the Lord and He rules over the nations.

  71. This was the promise of Jesus to His disciples.

  72. Matthew 24, verse 14, Jesus says,

    Matthew 24:14

  73. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations,

  74. and then the end will come.

  75. This was the design of God in the cross.

  76. As heaven's worship proclaims in Revelation 5 and verse 9,

  77. You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation.

  78. This was the final command of our risen Lord found in Matthew 28, verse 18 and following.

    Matthew 28:18

  79. He says,

  80. This was the God-given aim of Paul's apostleship.

  81. Romans 1, verse 5, Paul writes,

    Romans 1:5

  82. Through Christ we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith

  83. for the sake of His name, Christ's name, among all the nations.

  84. This was Paul's holy ambition,

  85. rooted not just in a unique apostolic call,

  86. but also in the Old Testament promise that is still valid today.

  87. In Romans 15, verse 20 and 21,

    Romans 15:20

  88. where he cites Isaiah 52 and verse 15,

  89. Paul writes,

  90. I make it my ambition to preach the gospel,

  91. not where Christ has already been named,

  92. lest I build on someone else's foundation,

  93. but as it is written,

  94. those who have never been told of Him will see,

  95. and those who have never heard will understand.

  96. Also in Acts 13, verse 47,

    Acts 13:47

  97. where Isaiah 42, verse 6 is cited,

    Isaiah 42:6

  98. So the Lord has commanded us, saying,

  99. I have made you a light for the Gentiles,

  100. that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

  101. Beloved, this was the purpose of the sending of the Holy Spirit.

  102. In Acts 1, verse 8, Jesus says,

    Acts 1:8

  103. You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  104. and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,

  105. and in all Judea and Samaria,

  106. and to the end of the earth.

  107. Again, the purpose of God in history

  108. is that the gospel of reconciliation

  109. spread to all the peoples of the world

  110. and yield God-centered, Christ-exalting churches.

  111. This was the aim.

  112. This was the work of Paul

  113. in the establishment of the Church of Colossae,

  114. and in this church,

  115. Paul's ministry necessarily,

  116. some would argue it is.

  117. We're not sure.

  118. But this church that the book of Hebrews is written to

  119. that we are in the midst of studying now,

  120. that all peoples everywhere would hear the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  121. This is Paul's aim,

  122. and it is ours as well.

  123. Secondly, the means of Paul's ministry.

  124. Paul says this very peculiar thing

  125. at the beginning of verse 24 in Colossians chapter 1.

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  126. He says,

  127. Now I rejoice.

  128. I find great joy in my sufferings for your sake,

  129. and in my flesh I am filling up

  130. what is lacking in Christ's afflictions

  131. for the sake of His body, that is, the church.

  132. The suffering of Paul

  133. was not a consequence of His ministry,

  134. but rather a strategy of it.

  135. If it's clear in your mind,

  136. it was not a consequence of His ministry.

  137. And what I'm saying to you is

  138. it wasn't an avoidable thing.

  139. It wasn't a consequence of what He was doing.

  140. It was a strategy of it.

  141. It was part and parcel of His ministry.

  142. Suffering was a primary means

  143. by which Paul spread

  144. the gospel of reconciliation

  145. to all peoples of the world

  146. in order to yield God-centered,

  147. Christ-exalting churches.

  148. And beloved,

  149. nothing has changed.

  150. If you believe that it has,

  151. then you have failed

  152. to believe the gospel rightly.

  153. It is the error of much modern preaching,

  154. and it is akin to the prosperity gospel

  155. that would say,

  156. rather believe in Jesus

  157. and He will make you wealthy and healthy.

  158. That's prosperity gospel.

  159. And so many of us so quickly

  160. and readily reject that.

  161. But this more subversive prosperity gospel says,

  162. believe in Jesus

  163. and you can keep your wealth

  164. and your health.

  165. He may not make you that,

  166. but what you have is still yours.

  167. Add a little Jesus to the mix.

  168. And change isn't really necessary

  169. to follow Jesus.

  170. Beloved, the way of Jesus

  171. is the way of suffering.

  172. If we are to follow Christ,

  173. then we will suffer in this world.

  174. And that is a broad suffering.

  175. There's a lot that's involved

  176. in such suffering.

  177. We will have trouble in this world.

  178. Let's look at the call of the gospel

  179. of Jesus Christ a bit together.

  180. Jesus said in Mark 8,

    Mark 8:34

  181. verse 34 and 35,

  182. if anyone would come after me,

  183. if we're going to follow Jesus,

  184. Jesus says,

  185. let him deny himself

  186. and take up his cross

  187. and follow me.

  188. For whoever would save his life

  189. will lose it.

  190. But whoever loses his life

  191. for my sake and the gospels

  192. will save it.

  193. Beloved, the cross is a place of death.

  194. The cross is a place

  195. where we put aside ourselves

  196. for the greater walk

  197. of following Jesus.

  198. It's where we begin to reorient

  199. who we are toward Him.

  200. It's where we treasure Him

  201. above all else,

  202. come what may,

  203. because we have Christ.

  204. Matthew 10, verse 16.

    Matthew 10:16

  205. Jesus says,

  206. Behold, I am sending you out

  207. as sheep in the midst of wolves.

  208. Romans 8, verse 36.

    Romans 8:36

  209. Paul here cites Psalm 44, verse 22,

    Psalms 44:22

  210. where he says,

  211. As it is written,

  212. for your sake,

  213. we are being killed

  214. all the day long.

  215. We are regarded as sheep

  216. to be slaughtered.

  217. And if you look just before that

  218. in Romans 8, verse 35,

    Romans 8:35

  219. the portion granted

  220. to those who are in Christ

  221. is tribulation, distress,

  222. persecution, famine,

  223. nakedness, danger, and sword.

  224. Jesus goes on in Matthew 10.

  225. I just read to you verse 16.

  226. This is verse 17.

  227. And following,

  228. Beware of men,

  229. for they will deliver you

  230. over to courts

  231. and flog you in their synagogues.

  232. And you will be dragged

  233. before governors and kings

  234. for my sake.

  235. Why?

  236. to bear witness

  237. before them

  238. and the Gentiles.

  239. That people would know

  240. that I am the Christ.

  241. Which leads us to this

  242. interesting thing

  243. that Paul says,

  244. In my flesh,

  245. I am filling up

  246. what is lacking

  247. in Christ's afflictions.

  248. We must be very careful

  249. at this point

  250. to not think

  251. that the affliction

  252. of the saints

  253. is somehow

  254. salvific.

  255. That our suffering

  256. has anything to do

  257. with the remediation

  258. of sin.

  259. I do not atone

  260. for anybody's sin

  261. in my suffering.

  262. Christ did that.

  263. Christ accomplished that.

  264. His death was perfect

  265. to accomplish

  266. that work.

  267. Here are some examples

  268. from the book of Hebrews.

  269. We are going to see

  270. this theme again

  271. and again

  272. in our study as well.

  273. Hebrews chapter 7

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  274. and verse 27.

  275. He, being Christ,

  276. has no need

  277. like those high priests

  278. to offer sacrifices daily

  279. first for his own sins

  280. and then for those

  281. of the people

  282. since he did this

  283. once for all

  284. when he offered up

  285. himself.

  286. So we are not

  287. sacrifices in that way.

  288. Hebrews chapter 9

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  289. and verse 12.

  290. Jesus entered

  291. once for all

  292. into the holy places.

  293. not by means

  294. of the blood

  295. of goats and calves

  296. but by means

  297. of his own blood.

  298. Thus,

  299. securing

  300. an eternal

  301. redemption.

  302. Having paid

  303. for all of the sins

  304. of the church

  305. in his

  306. suffering.

  307. Hebrews chapter 9

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  308. and verse 26.

  309. The second part of it.

  310. Jesus

  311. has appeared

  312. once for all

  313. at the end

  314. of the ages

  315. to put away

  316. sin

  317. by the sacrifice

  318. of himself.

  319. And then

  320. Hebrews chapter 10

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  321. and verse 14.

  322. For by a single

  323. offering,

  324. Jesus has perfected

  325. for all time

  326. those who are

  327. being

  328. sanctified.

  329. So,

  330. do not be mistaken,

  331. Jesus' sacrifice

  332. was not lacking

  333. in its power

  334. to redeem the church

  335. from its sin.

  336. Jesus' life

  337. and death

  338. was fully

  339. sufficient

  340. to save

  341. for all time

  342. those who have

  343. placed

  344. and will place

  345. believing faith

  346. in him.

  347. How then

  348. are Christ's

  349. afflictions

  350. lacking?

  351. John Piper

  352. wrote a little

  353. book called

  354. Filling Up

  355. the Afflictions

  356. of Christ

  357. where he wrote

  358. this,

  359. What is lacking

  360. in the afflictions

  361. of Christ

  362. is not that

  363. they are deficient

  364. in worth

  365. as though

  366. they could not

  367. sufficiently cover

  368. the sins

  369. of all

  370. who believe.

  371. What is lacking

  372. is that the

  373. infinite value

  374. of Christ's

  375. afflictions

  376. is not known

  377. and trusted

  378. in the world.

  379. These afflictions

  380. and what they

  381. mean are still

  382. hidden to most

  383. peoples.

  384. And God's

  385. intention

  386. is that the

  387. mystery be

  388. revealed to

  389. all the

  390. nations.

  391. So the

  392. afflictions of

  393. Christ are

  394. lacking in the

  395. sense that they

  396. are not seen

  397. and known

  398. and loved

  399. among the

  400. nations.

  401. They must be

  402. carried by

  403. missionaries

  404. and those

  405. missionaries

  406. complete what

  407. is lacking

  408. in the

  409. afflictions of

  410. Christ

  411. by extending

  412. them to

  413. others.

  414. How?

  415. How do they

  416. extend that

  417. to others?

  418. A man named

  419. Epaphroditus

  420. can help us

  421. with this.

  422. In Philippians

    Philippians 2:25

  423. chapter 2

  424. verse 25

  425. and following,

  426. Paul writes

  427. to the Philippian

  428. believers,

  429. I have thought it

  430. necessary to send

  431. to you Epaphroditus

  432. my brother and

  433. fellow worker and

  434. fellow soldier

  435. and your messenger

  436. and minister

  437. to my need.

  438. he was sent

  439. to Paul

  440. as a minister

  441. to his need

  442. by the Philippian

  443. church.

  444. For he has been

  445. longing for you

  446. all and has been

  447. distressed because

  448. you heard that

  449. he was ill.

  450. And I just love

  451. this attitude of

  452. Epaphroditus.

  453. He's concerned

  454. because they heard

  455. that he was

  456. sick.

  457. Wonderful

  458. example of

  459. self-forgetfulness.

  460. Indeed,

  461. he was ill

  462. near to death,

  463. but God had

  464. mercy on him

  465. and not only on

  466. him,

  467. but on me

  468. also,

  469. lest I

  470. should have

  471. sorrow upon

  472. sorrow.

  473. I am the

  474. more eager to

  475. send him

  476. therefore,

  477. that you may

  478. rejoice at

  479. seeing him

  480. again,

  481. and that I

  482. may be

  483. less anxious.

  484. So,

  485. receive him

  486. in the Lord

  487. with all joy

  488. and honor

  489. such men.

  490. So,

  491. you get the

  492. story of

  493. what's happening

  494. here as Paul's

  495. writing to the

  496. Philippian church.

  497. Verse 30,

  498. For he nearly

  499. died for the

  500. work of Christ.

  501. Because he was

  502. sent,

  503. he got sick,

  504. and he almost

  505. died.

  506. Paul says,

  507. risking his

  508. life to

  509. complete what

  510. was lacking

  511. in your

  512. service to

  513. me.

  514. And this

  515. phrase in

  516. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  517. chapter 2 is

  518. the exact same

  519. phrase that Paul

  520. uses in

  521. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  522. chapter 1.

  523. What was

  524. lacking in the

  525. afflictions of

  526. Christ,

  527. lacking in your

  528. service to

  529. me.

  530. And I think

  531. this helps us

  532. to understand

  533. rightly that

  534. the way that

  535. we take the

  536. affliction of

  537. Christ to

  538. others,

  539. that they

  540. might know

  541. him,

  542. is that we

  543. suffer like

  544. Christ suffered.

  545. We have a

  546. presence amongst

  547. people, a

  548. suffering presence

  549. amongst people,

  550. that we also

  551. experience the

  552. afflictions of

  553. Christ.

  554. And we display

  555. those afflictions

  556. to others.

  557. And we walk

  558. in those

  559. afflictions with

  560. a great faith

  561. and a great

  562. God who is

  563. redeeming people

  564. for his

  565. name.

  566. So suffering

  567. was a

  568. primary means

  569. by which Paul

  570. spread the

  571. gospel of

  572. reconciliation to

  573. all the peoples

  574. of the world

  575. in order to

  576. yield God-centered,

  577. Christ-exalting

  578. churches.

  579. Beloved, this

  580. is a divine

  581. strategy, not

  582. merely a

  583. consequence.

  584. suffering.

  585. Now at this

  586. point I have to

  587. imagine that you've

  588. got all kinds of

  589. questions about what

  590. suffering is.

  591. I've spoken so

  592. general and broadly

  593. about it.

  594. I think we suffer in

  595. a lot of ways in

  596. this world.

  597. I think we suffer in

  598. ways that are

  599. common to all

  600. people in this

  601. world with things

  602. like sickness.

  603. Our bodies are

  604. failing.

  605. We are ever being

  606. reminded that we

  607. are headed swiftly

  608. towards death.

  609. Some of you are

  610. young.

  611. I think most

  612. people in the

  613. room probably

  614. have that feeling

  615. when you wake

  616. up in the

  617. morning of,

  618. oh no.

  619. The process of

  620. getting out of

  621. bed is painful.

  622. I typically roll

  623. onto a shoulder

  624. and drop a knee

  625. down to the floor

  626. and start on my

  627. knees.

  628. And I wish it

  629. was because I

  630. was there in

  631. prayer to the

  632. Lord.

  633. I'm just trying

  634. to stand up

  635. in the morning.

  636. The pollen count

  637. is up.

  638. I felt like I

  639. had sand in my

  640. eyes.

  641. Yesterday.

  642. This is sin in

  643. the world.

  644. The world is

  645. broken.

  646. It is desperately

  647. broken in very

  648. normative ways.

  649. We experience it

  650. in deeper ways

  651. as well.

  652. We experience it

  653. in the loss of

  654. loved ones,

  655. old and young.

  656. Tragedy strikes

  657. families all the

  658. time.

  659. We see it in the

  660. broad suffering

  661. of the world

  662. around us.

  663. People starving

  664. to death.

  665. People without

  666. parents.

  667. There is so

  668. much brokenness

  669. and pain in

  670. this world.

  671. And as

  672. Christian people,

  673. we ought to

  674. rightly view

  675. that through

  676. the lens of

  677. sin.

  678. Look at the

  679. curse and its

  680. rampant nature

  681. in the place

  682. that we are.

  683. I think we

  684. ought to

  685. experience those

  686. things in a

  687. way that is

  688. unique amongst

  689. peoples of the

  690. earth because we

  691. understand what

  692. caused it.

  693. sin.

  694. But more than

  695. that, particularly

  696. within that, the

  697. church throughout

  698. the ages has

  699. been persecuted

  700. for righteousness

  701. and we are not

  702. those who get to

  703. escape this.

  704. We don't get to

  705. live in America

  706. and escape people

  707. not liking us for

  708. our faith.

  709. And that's going

  710. to take a different

  711. shape where we live

  712. than it does in

  713. other places.

  714. I am fully aware

  715. that no one here

  716. is going to be

  717. beaten for being a

  718. Christian leaving

  719. this place.

  720. I would be so

  721. astoundingly shocked

  722. if that were to

  723. happen.

  724. I probably shouldn't

  725. be, but I would

  726. be.

  727. It's probably not

  728. going to take that

  729. shape.

  730. But it might look

  731. like you being

  732. passed over for a

  733. promotion because

  734. your boss really

  735. doesn't care for you

  736. all that much

  737. because you keep

  738. telling him of his

  739. wickedness and

  740. calling him to

  741. turn to God.

  742. being a follower

  743. of Jesus Christ

  744. is going to press

  745. you to speak boldly

  746. to people about

  747. their eternal

  748. damnation.

  749. It may look like

  750. school teachers,

  751. you not being able

  752. to hold your

  753. position any longer

  754. because you can no

  755. longer hold your

  756. tongue and you

  757. must tell these

  758. children about this

  759. Jesus that you

  760. love so much.

  761. I pray that all

  762. of you have school

  763. systems you can

  764. carefully navigate

  765. and preach faithfully

  766. the gospel without

  767. being fired.

  768. It may mean that

  769. your neighbor doesn't

  770. want to talk to you

  771. in the driveway

  772. anymore.

  773. That he very

  774. quickly scrambles

  775. inside or he

  776. pulls in the garage

  777. and closes the door

  778. before he gets out

  779. of the car because

  780. he knows you may

  781. come over and

  782. want to tell him

  783. that he needs to

  784. repent and believe

  785. in Christ.

  786. I think that we

  787. don't experience

  788. enough suffering

  789. in this world

  790. because we're not

  791. faithful enough

  792. in our pursuit

  793. of Christ.

  794. I think we're

  795. this weird blend

  796. of Christian

  797. in the world.

  798. I think the way

  799. we live as Christians

  800. to other Christians

  801. in the world

  802. would be shocking.

  803. It would be

  804. strange.

  805. They would come

  806. over and want

  807. to talk about

  808. our experience

  809. and we would

  810. have no idea

  811. what they're

  812. talking about.

  813. So much that

  814. we do has been

  815. Americanized in a

  816. very unhealthy

  817. way.

  818. suffering is a

  819. divine strategy.

  820. And if you are

  821. sitting there and

  822. you're thinking

  823. wait a second

  824. I don't want to

  825. suffer.

  826. My impulse is not

  827. to do this thing

  828. there's a naturalness

  829. to that.

  830. That's normative

  831. but you want to

  832. love Christ more

  833. and you want to

  834. love the way of

  835. Christ more

  836. and you want to

  837. live for eternity

  838. and not for now.

  839. If you would

  840. forsake Christ

  841. in order to

  842. not suffer

  843. then you are

  844. not in Him.

  845. You have not

  846. experienced His

  847. lavish grace

  848. and mercy

  849. to you.

  850. Tertullian

  851. who was a

  852. Christian who

  853. lived from

  854. about AD

  855. 160 to

  856. about AD

  857. 225

  858. said

  859. the oftener

  860. we are

  861. mown down

  862. by you

  863. Romans

  864. the more

  865. in number

  866. we Christians

  867. grow

  868. the blood

  869. of Christians

  870. is seed

  871. and this is

  872. true in the

  873. world today

  874. if God were

  875. to suddenly

  876. gather together

  877. the church

  878. global

  879. today

  880. we

  881. white

  882. European

  883. Christians

  884. nominal

  885. in our

  886. devotion to

  887. Christ

  888. would be

  889. the minority

  890. and the

  891. odd ones.

  892. In the

  893. world right

  894. now the

  895. fastest growing

  896. churches are

  897. growing in

  898. places where

  899. we don't hear

  900. about because

  901. they're

  902. underground.

  903. They're

  904. highly

  905. persecuted.

  906. Places like

  907. Iran,

  908. China,

  909. you hear

  910. reports coming

  911. out of China

  912. because it's

  913. a little bit

  914. looser now

  915. in these days.

  916. As many as

  917. 10,000 people

  918. a day professing

  919. faith in

  920. Christ.

  921. We're the

  922. minority.

  923. We're the

  924. strange ones.

  925. The blood

  926. of Christians

  927. is seed.

  928. John Piper

  929. adds to

  930. Tertullian's

  931. quote,

  932. for almost

  933. 300 years

  934. Christians

  935. grew in

  936. soil that

  937. was wet

  938. with the

  939. blood of

  940. martyrs.

  941. The

  942. suffering of

  943. God's

  944. saints

  945. ought to

  946. be the

  947. norm,

  948. not the

  949. exception.

  950. It ought to

  951. be normative

  952. and beloved,

  953. we ought to

  954. be all the

  955. more bold

  956. because of

  957. the place

  958. we live.

  959. What are

  960. we afraid

  961. of?

  962. A little

  963. derision,

  964. being made

  965. fun of?

  966. Oh,

  967. someone's

  968. going to

  969. call me

  970. goody-two-shoes

  971. because I

  972. called them

  973. to the

  974. ways of

  975. God.

  976. I'm not

  977. going to

  978. be as

  979. liked as

  980. I would

  981. like to

  982. be.

  983. We should

  984. be more

  985. bold.

  986. We should

  987. be astoundingly,

  988. we don't

  989. even really

  990. have to be

  991. all that

  992. wise in

  993. the way

  994. that we

  995. proclaim

  996. the gospel

  997. of Jesus

  998. Christ

  999. because we're

  1000. not going

  1001. to be

  1002. imprisoned

  1003. and we're

  1004. not going

  1005. to be

  1006. put to

  1007. death.

  1008. We should

  1009. press on

  1010. and press

  1011. in.

  1012. So let me

  1013. just ask

  1014. you,

  1015. are you

  1016. willing to

  1017. bear up

  1018. under

  1019. discomfort

  1020. for the

  1021. sake of

  1022. Christ?

  1023. I wonder

  1024. how we

  1025. would respond

  1026. if there

  1027. were

  1028. picketers

  1029. at the

  1030. front of

  1031. our

  1032. property

  1033. on a

  1034. Sunday

  1035. morning.

  1036. If people

  1037. were saying

  1038. hateful

  1039. things about

  1040. you claiming

  1041. to be a

  1042. Christ follower

  1043. as you

  1044. pulled in,

  1045. how likely

  1046. would you

  1047. be to

  1048. navigate

  1049. through

  1050. such a

  1051. throng

  1052. to be

  1053. able to

  1054. gather

  1055. with the

  1056. church?

  1057. Worse

  1058. yet,

  1059. what if

  1060. there were

  1061. threats made

  1062. concerning

  1063. our lives?

  1064. What if

  1065. someone called

  1066. up and

  1067. said,

  1068. if your

  1069. church keeps

  1070. meeting the

  1071. way it's

  1072. meeting,

  1073. I'm going

  1074. to show

  1075. up one

  1076. day,

  1077. would we

  1078. continue

  1079. to meet?

  1080. Would we

  1081. so want

  1082. to be

  1083. together

  1084. to praise

  1085. this God

  1086. that has

  1087. loved us

  1088. so much

  1089. that we

  1090. would be

  1091. willing to

  1092. risk

  1093. such a

  1094. thing?

  1095. Would you

  1096. all gather

  1097. at dawn

  1098. in a

  1099. secret place

  1100. because the

  1101. danger was

  1102. so high,

  1103. because you

  1104. are so

  1105. hungry for

  1106. Christian

  1107. fellowship

  1108. and the

  1109. preaching of

  1110. God's

  1111. word?

  1112. If I

  1113. sent out a

  1114. message and

  1115. said,

  1116. hey,

  1117. we had a

  1118. threat placed

  1119. on the

  1120. church,

  1121. and so

  1122. this Sunday

  1123. instead of

  1124. meeting at

  1125. 1030,

  1126. we're going

  1127. to meet at

  1128. 5am,

  1129. because we're

  1130. going to get

  1131. in and we're

  1132. going to get

  1133. out before

  1134. anybody would

  1135. ever show

  1136. up to our

  1137. property.

  1138. How many

  1139. people would

  1140. be here

  1141. on that

  1142. morning?

  1143. For so

  1144. many,

  1145. gathering with

  1146. the church

  1147. seems to be

  1148. a thing they

  1149. do when they

  1150. have nothing

  1151. else to

  1152. do.

  1153. Paul writes

  1154. in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  1155. chapter 3

  1156. and verse 12,

  1157. Indeed,

  1158. all who desire

  1159. to live a

  1160. godly life

  1161. in Christ

  1162. Jesus

  1163. will be

  1164. persecuted.

  1165. And Paul

  1166. is not here

  1167. saying that

  1168. if we want

  1169. to be godly,

  1170. we have to

  1171. go to

  1172. dangerous

  1173. places for

  1174. the gospel.

  1175. Paul here

  1176. is saying

  1177. that the

  1178. gospel is

  1179. dangerous.

  1180. Pursue

  1181. Christ where

  1182. you are

  1183. and you

  1184. will be

  1185. persecuted.

  1186. This

  1187. shouldn't be

  1188. some far

  1189. removed

  1190. foreign

  1191. theory of

  1192. the Christian

  1193. life.

  1194. What is

  1195. missing in

  1196. your life

  1197. that prevents

  1198. your affliction?

  1199. What comfort

  1200. do you hide

  1201. behind?

  1202. What sacrifice

  1203. do you need

  1204. to make?

  1205. The contemporary

  1206. Romanian pastor

  1207. Joseph

  1208. San,

  1209. who has

  1210. suffered

  1211. greatly at

  1212. the hand

  1213. of Russian

  1214. communists,

  1215. stated,

  1216. Christ's

  1217. suffering

  1218. is for

  1219. propitiation.

  1220. Our

  1221. suffering

  1222. is for

  1223. propagation.

  1224. Love that.

  1225. The seed

  1226. of the gospel

  1227. is sown

  1228. through the

  1229. suffering

  1230. of his

  1231. people.

  1232. Jesus

  1233. said in

  1234. John

    John 12:24

  1235. chapter

  1236. 12,

  1237. verse 24

  1238. and 25,

  1239. truly,

  1240. truly,

  1241. I say

  1242. to you,

  1243. unless a

  1244. grain of

  1245. wheat falls

  1246. into the

  1247. earth and

  1248. dies,

  1249. it remains

  1250. alone.

  1251. But if

  1252. it dies,

  1253. it bears

  1254. much fruit.

  1255. Whoever

  1256. loves his

  1257. life loses

  1258. it,

  1259. and whoever

  1260. hates his

  1261. life in

  1262. this world

  1263. will keep

  1264. it for

  1265. eternal

  1266. life.

  1267. Jesus

  1268. here is

  1269. not just

  1270. referring to

  1271. the death

  1272. of the

  1273. martyr,

  1274. although he

  1275. certainly

  1276. is,

  1277. but also

  1278. to the

  1279. daily

  1280. dying

  1281. of

  1282. disciples

  1283. of

  1284. Jesus

  1285. who

  1286. take up

  1287. their

  1288. crosses

  1289. and

  1290. follow

  1291. him,

  1292. follow

  1293. the

  1294. example

  1295. of

  1296. his

  1297. life

  1298. and

  1299. death.

  1300. Our

  1301. Lord

  1302. was a

  1303. suffering

  1304. servant.

  1305. It is

  1306. insane

  1307. for us

  1308. to call

  1309. ourselves

  1310. little

  1311. Christs

  1312. and to

  1313. not

  1314. suffer.

  1315. Christ

  1316. suffered.

  1317. God

  1318. himself

  1319. made

  1320. flesh,

  1321. emptied

  1322. himself,

  1323. became

  1324. humble

  1325. as a

  1326. servant,

  1327. and he

  1328. suffered

  1329. on our

  1330. behalf.

  1331. Jesus

  1332. says,

  1333. John

    John 13:16

  1334. chapter

  1335. 13

  1336. verse

  1337. 16,

  1338. truly,

  1339. truly I

  1340. say to

  1341. you,

  1342. a servant

  1343. is not

  1344. greater

  1345. than his

  1346. master,

  1347. nor is

  1348. a messenger

  1349. greater

  1350. than the

  1351. one who

  1352. sent him.

  1353. The

  1354. message

  1355. of Jesus

  1356. Christ

  1357. is that

  1358. he lived,

  1359. he suffered,

  1360. and he died

  1361. for us.

  1362. And his

  1363. messengers

  1364. are meant

  1365. to bring

  1366. that message

  1367. in.

  1368. Our

  1369. suffering.

  1370. The

  1371. proper

  1372. Christian

  1373. life

  1374. is one

  1375. of

  1376. daily

  1377. death.

  1378. And Paul

  1379. writes in

  1380. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:8

  1381. chapter 4

  1382. verse 8

  1383. and following,

  1384. we are

  1385. afflicted in

  1386. every way

  1387. but not

  1388. crushed,

  1389. perplexed

  1390. but not

  1391. driven to

  1392. despair,

  1393. persecuted

  1394. but not

  1395. forsaken,

  1396. struck

  1397. down but

  1398. not

  1399. destroyed,

  1400. always

  1401. carrying in

  1402. the body

  1403. the death

  1404. of Jesus.

  1405. so the

  1406. life of

  1407. Jesus

  1408. may also

  1409. be

  1410. manifested

  1411. in our

  1412. bodies.

  1413. For we

  1414. who live

  1415. are always

  1416. being given

  1417. over to

  1418. death

  1419. for Jesus

  1420. sake,

  1421. so the

  1422. life of

  1423. Jesus

  1424. also may

  1425. be

  1426. manifested

  1427. in our

  1428. mortal

  1429. flesh.

  1430. So death

  1431. is at work

  1432. in us

  1433. but life

  1434. in you.

  1435. There's this

  1436. impartation

  1437. of life

  1438. to those

  1439. who see

  1440. us suffer

  1441. and bear

  1442. up under

  1443. it for

  1444. the joy

  1445. of Christ.

  1446. Sam

  1447. Storms in

  1448. his devotional

  1449. book on

  1450. Colossians

  1451. entitled

  1452. The Hope

  1453. of Glory

  1454. wrote,

  1455. Suffering

  1456. for sin

  1457. is a

  1458. reproach.

  1459. Suffering

  1460. for suffering's

  1461. sake

  1462. is perverted.

  1463. Suffering

  1464. for the

  1465. sake of

  1466. Christ

  1467. and His

  1468. people

  1469. is grounds

  1470. for joy.

  1471. Peter

  1472. writes in

  1473. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:13

  1474. chapter 4

  1475. verse 13

  1476. and following,

  1477. Rejoice

  1478. insofar

  1479. as you

  1480. share

  1481. Christ's

  1482. suffering

  1483. that you

  1484. may also

  1485. rejoice

  1486. and be

  1487. glad

  1488. when His

  1489. glory

  1490. is revealed.

  1491. If you

  1492. are insulted

  1493. for the

  1494. name of

  1495. Christ,

  1496. you are

  1497. blessed

  1498. because the

  1499. spirit of

  1500. glory and

  1501. of God

  1502. rests upon

  1503. you.

  1504. But let

  1505. none of

  1506. you suffer

  1507. as a

  1508. murderer

  1509. or a

  1510. thief

  1511. or an

  1512. evildoer

  1513. or as

  1514. a meddler.

  1515. He's

  1516. saying,

  1517. don't be

  1518. dumb.

  1519. Your

  1520. suffering

  1521. for being

  1522. a bad

  1523. person

  1524. is not

  1525. suffering

  1526. for Christ.

  1527. Yet,

  1528. if anyone

  1529. suffers

  1530. as a

  1531. Christian,

  1532. let him

  1533. not be

  1534. ashamed,

  1535. but let

  1536. him

  1537. glorify

  1538. God

  1539. in that

  1540. name.

  1541. And all

  1542. of this

  1543. is why

  1544. Paul is

  1545. able to

  1546. say,

  1547. now I

  1548. rejoice

  1549. in my

  1550. sufferings.

  1551. Suffering

  1552. for the

  1553. name of

  1554. Christ

  1555. is to

  1556. join

  1557. him

  1558. in his

  1559. suffering,

  1560. to be

  1561. united

  1562. with him

  1563. in his

  1564. suffering.

  1565. in

  1566. Acts 5.

  1567. In

  1568. Acts 5,

  1569. we see

  1570. the

  1571. record

  1572. of

  1573. the

  1574. apostles

  1575. called

  1576. together,

  1577. verse 40,

  1578. and put

  1579. on trial.

  1580. It records

  1581. when they

  1582. had called

  1583. in the

  1584. apostles,

  1585. they

  1586. beat

  1587. them

  1588. and

  1589. charged

  1590. them

  1591. not

  1592. to

  1593. speak

  1594. in

  1595. the

  1596. name

  1597. of

  1598. Jesus

  1599. and

  1600. let

  1601. them

  1602. go.

  1603. Then,

  1604. they

  1605. left

  1606. the

  1607. presence

  1608. of

  1609. the

  1610. council,

  1611. rejoicing

  1612. that they

  1613. were

  1614. counted

  1615. worthy

  1616. to

  1617. suffer

  1618. dishonor

  1619. for

  1620. the

  1621. name.

  1622. And

  1623. every

  1624. day

  1625. in

  1626. the

  1627. temple

  1628. and

  1629. from

  1630. house

  1631. to

  1632. house,

  1633. they

  1634. did

  1635. not

  1636. cease

  1637. teaching

  1638. and

  1639. preaching

  1640. that

  1641. the

  1642. Christ

  1643. is

  1644. Jesus.

  1645. And

  1646. I

  1647. love

  1648. that

  1649. account

  1650. of

  1651. Luke.

  1652. Luke's

  1653. very

  1654. to

  1655. the

  1656. point

  1657. record.

  1658. They're

  1659. charged,

  1660. they're

  1661. beaten,

  1662. they're

  1663. charged

  1664. not

  1665. to

  1666. preach

  1667. about

  1668. Christ,

  1669. they're

  1670. so

  1671. happy

  1672. that

  1673. they

  1674. got

  1675. to

  1676. suffer

  1677. as

  1678. Christ

  1679. suffered,

  1680. and

  1681. what

  1682. do

  1683. they

  1684. do?

  1685. They

  1686. go

  1687. around

  1688. teaching

  1689. that

  1690. Jesus

  1691. is

  1692. the

  1693. Christ.

  1694. Again,

  1695. if you're

  1696. not

  1697. okay

  1698. with

  1699. this

  1700. teaching,

  1701. then you

  1702. do not

  1703. treasure

  1704. Christ

  1705. as

  1706. you

  1707. ought

  1708. to.

  1709. The

  1710. way

  1711. of

  1712. Jesus

  1713. is

  1714. the

  1715. way

  1716. of

  1717. suffering.

  1718. Now

  1719. I want

  1720. to show

  1721. you this

  1722. from the

  1723. book of

  1724. Hebrews

  1725. in

  1726. closing.

  1727. So

  1728. turn

  1729. with

  1730. me

  1731. if

  1732. you

  1733. will

  1734. to

  1735. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1736. chapter

  1737. 10.

  1738. Beloved,

  1739. beyond

  1740. the

  1741. suffering

  1742. of

  1743. Christ,

  1744. there

  1745. is a

  1746. great

  1747. and

  1748. eternal

  1749. joy

  1750. that

  1751. awaits

  1752. us.

  1753. We

  1754. get a

  1755. taste

  1756. of

  1757. that

  1758. joy

  1759. even

  1760. here

  1761. and

  1762. now,

  1763. and

  1764. we'll

  1765. have

  1766. so

  1767. much

  1768. of

  1769. it

  1770. later.

  1771. And

  1772. the

  1773. writer

  1774. of

  1775. Hebrews

  1776. makes

  1777. this

  1778. case

  1779. across

  1780. the

  1781. text.

  1782. I'm

  1783. so

  1784. looking

  1785. forward

  1786. to

  1787. working

  1788. through

  1789. the

  1790. entire

  1791. book

  1792. of

  1793. Hebrews

  1794. and

  1795. picking

  1796. this

  1797. theme

  1798. up

  1799. again

  1800. and

  1801. again

  1802. and

  1803. again.

  1804. But

  1805. I

  1806. want

  1807. to

  1808. show

  1809. you

  1810. that

  1811. he

  1812. makes

  1813. the

  1814. argument

  1815. to

  1816. them

  1817. to

  1818. persevere

  1819. to

  1820. keep

  1821. on

  1822. in

  1823. their

  1824. suffering

  1825. and

  1826. he

  1827. makes

  1828. it

  1829. first

  1830. chapter

  1831. 10

  1832. verse

  1833. 32

  1834. through

  1835. 35

  1836. with

  1837. their

  1838. own

  1839. experience.

  1840. He

  1841. reminds

  1842. them

  1843. of

  1844. themselves.

  1845. He

  1846. argues

  1847. !

  1848. them

  1849. with

  1850. their

  1851. own

  1852. case.

  1853. He

  1854. says,

  1855. but

  1856. recall

  1857. the

  1858. former

  1859. days

  1860. when

  1861. after

  1862. you

  1863. endured

  1864. a

  1865. hard

  1866. struggle

  1867. with

  1868. sufferings

  1869. sometimes

  1870. being

  1871. publicly

  1872. exposed

  1873. to

  1874. reproach

  1875. and

  1876. affliction

  1877. and

  1878. sometimes

  1879. being

  1880. partners

  1881. with

  1882. those

  1883. so

  1884. treated

  1885. for

  1886. you

  1887. had

  1888. compassion

  1889. on

  1890. those

  1891. in

  1892. prison

  1893. and

  1894. you

  1895. joyfully

  1896. accepted

  1897. the

  1898. plundering

  1899. of

  1900. your

  1901. property

  1902. since

  1903. you

  1904. knew

  1905. that

  1906. you

  1907. yourselves

  1908. had

  1909. a

  1910. better

  1911. possession

  1912. and

  1913. an

  1914. abiding

  1915. one.

  1916. Therefore

  1917. do

  1918. not

  1919. throw

  1920. away

  1921. your

  1922. confidence

  1923. which

  1924. has

  1925. a

  1926. great

  1927. reward.

  1928. So

  1929. they

  1930. themselves

  1931. are

  1932. suffering

  1933. right

  1934. they're

  1935. being

  1936. publicly

  1937. exposed

  1938. reproach

  1939. there's

  1940. evil

  1941. words

  1942. being

  1943. spoken

  1944. against

  1945. them

  1946. affliction

  1947. there's

  1948. likely

  1949. some

  1950. kind

  1951. of

  1952. physical

  1953. persecution

  1954. happening

  1955. and

  1956. at

  1957. times

  1958. they're

  1959. partnering

  1960. with

  1961. some

  1962. who've

  1963. been

  1964. imprisoned

  1965. and

  1966. in

  1967. prison

  1968. in

  1969. those

  1970. days

  1971. if

  1972. you

  1973. didn't

  1974. have

  1975. somebody

  1976. come

  1977. and

  1978. help

  1979. you

  1980. you

  1981. died

  1982. you

  1983. had

  1984. to

  1985. be

  1986. fed

  1987. being

  1988. imprisoned

  1989. so

  1990. they're

  1991. exposing

  1992. themselves

  1993. as

  1994. Christians

  1995. going

  1996. and

  1997. helping

  1998. those

  1999. that

  2000. are

  2001. in

  2002. their

  2003. church

  2004. that

  2005. have

  2006. been

  2007. imprisoned

  2008. and

  2009. what

  2010. happens

  2011. in

  2012. this

  2013. act

  2014. their

  2015. property

  2016. is

  2017. plundered

  2018. as

  2019. they

  2020. leave

  2021. their

  2022. house

  2023. people

  2024. go

  2025. into

  2026. their

  2027. house

  2028. and

  2029. they

  2030. take

  2031. their

  2032. property

  2033. and

  2034. they

  2035. do

  2036. this

  2037. odd

  2038. thing

  2039. that

  2040. you

  2041. joyfully

  2042. accept

  2043. it

  2044. why

  2045. because

  2046. you

  2047. knew

  2048. that

  2049. you

  2050. have

  2051. a

  2052. better

  2053. possession

  2054. and

  2055. it's

  2056. a

  2057. possession

  2058. that

  2059. abides

  2060. it's

  2061. a

  2062. possession

  2063. that

  2064. no

  2065. one

  2066. can

  2067. take

  2068. from

  2069. you

  2070. the

  2071. author

  2072. of

  2073. Hebrews

  2074. says

  2075. so

  2076. don't

  2077. throw

  2078. away

  2079. your

  2080. confidence

  2081. this

  2082. confidence

  2083. you

  2084. expressed

  2085. so

  2086. well

  2087. because

  2088. it

  2089. has

  2090. a

  2091. great

  2092. reward

  2093. like

  2107. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  2108. chapter

  2109. 11

  2110. and

  2111. verse

  2112. 24

  2113. the

  2114. writer

  2115. of

  2116. Hebrews

  2117. is

  2118. pointing

  2119. these

  2120. Hebrew

  2121. believers

  2122. to

  2123. a

  2124. greater

  2125. faith

  2126. and

  2127. he

  2128. gives

  2129. them

  2130. this

  2131. example

  2132. of

  2133. so

  2134. many

  2135. who

  2136. by

  2137. faith

  2138. by

  2139. faith

  2140. by

  2141. faith

  2142. and

  2143. it

  2144. says

  2145. verse

  2146. 24

  2147. by

  2148. faith

  2149. Moses

  2150. when

  2151. he

  2152. was

  2153. grown

  2154. up

  2155. refused

  2156. to be

  2157. called

  2158. the

  2159. son

  2160. of

  2161. Pharaoh's

  2162. daughter

  2163. you

  2164. remember

  2165. Moses

  2166. was

  2167. a

  2168. prince

  2169. of

  2170. a

  2171. wealthy

  2172. nation

  2173. choosing

  2174. rather

  2175. to be

  2176. mistreated

  2177. with the

  2178. people

  2179. of

  2180. God

  2181. than

  2182. to

  2183. enjoy

  2184. the

  2185. fleeting

  2186. pleasures

  2187. of

  2188. sin

  2189. passing

  2190. sand

  2191. through

  2192. his

  2193. fingers

  2194. fleeting

  2195. pleasures

  2196. of

  2197. sin

  2198. he

  2199. considered

  2200. and I

  2201. love that

  2202. the author of Hebrews

  2203. does this

2204. Moses didn't have this particular thing in mind

2205. but we get this inspired commentary on what's going on as Moses is looking

  2206. forward to being gods

2207. right to belonging to God

2208. he considered the reproach of Christ

2209. greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt for he was looking to the reward

  2210. !

2211. so he makes a case to the Hebrews by their own argument

2212. then he does it with Moses and Moses is giving up the fleeting pleasures the treasures of Egypt for the greater treasure of Christ himself and then he makes the argument with Christ

  2213. Hebrews chapter 12

    Hebrews 12:1

  2214. verse 1 and 2

  2215. so following 11

2216. we have all of these who buy faith

2217. and then the writer of Hebrews says

2218. therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses

2219. all of these faithful ones that have gone before us

2220. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely

2221. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us right

2222. in the midst of our suffering

2223. let us run with endurance

  2224. looking to Jesus

2225. seeing him as our example

2226. the founder and perfecter of our faith

2227. who for the joy that was set before him

  2228. endured the cross

  2229. despising the shame

2230. and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God

  2231. so

2232. as we suffer in this world

  2233. we're to look to

  2234. Jesus

  2235. who shows us

2236. how it is we are to

  2237. suffer

2238. and how did he do this?

2239. he looked to the joy

  2240. that was set

  2241. before him

2242. he looked to the eternal

2243. reward of being seated at the right hand

  2244. of God

  2245. and then again

2246. in the life of Christ

  2247. Hebrews chapter 13

    Hebrews 13:12

  2248. verse 12

  2249. and

  2250. following

  2251. so Jesus

  2252. also suffered

  2253. outside the gate

  2254. in order to

  2255. sanctify the people

  2256. through his own blood

  2257. therefore

2258. let us go to him

  2259. outside the camp

  2260. and bear

  2261. the reproach

  2262. he endured

2263. the author is doing that

  2264. let us follow Christ

  2265. to where Christ went

  2266. bear the reproach

  2267. that he

  2268. endured

  2269. why?

  2270. for

  2271. here we have no

  2272. lasting

  2273. city

2274. all the pleasures of this world

2275. are going to turn to dust

  2276. one day

  2277. but we

  2278. seek

  2279. the city

  2280. that is to come

  2281. it's a better city

  2282. it's a more glorious city

  2283. it's an eternal

  2284. city

  2285. where Christ

  2286. will reign

  2287. forever

  2288. and we will reign

  2289. with him

  2290. Paul

  2291. rejoiced

  2292. in his sufferings

  2293. because he knew

  2294. that it was for

  2295. the gain

  2296. of the

  2297. Colossian church

  2298. and

  2299. it was for his

  2300. eternal reward

  2301. this is glorious

  2302. this is wonderful

  2303. that we would

  2304. want to follow

  2305. Christ

  2306. in a way

  2307. that we

  2308. suffer

  2309. that we're

  2310. looking

  2311. toward

  2312. an eternal

  2313. reward

  2314. the good of

  2315. others

  2316. and the glory

  2317. of God

  2318. on your bulletin

  2319. there's a

  2320. quote from

  2321. John Trapp

  2322. who is a

2323. if I'm getting this right

  2324. a 16th century

  2325. Anglican commentator

2326. and he said this simple

2327. thing and I just like it

  2328. stuck in my brain

  2329. this week

  2330. he that rides

  2331. to be crowned

  2332. you're headed to your

  2333. coronation

  2334. ceremony

  2335. you're going to this

  2336. most glorious

  2337. event

  2338. where you

  2339. will reign

  2340. with Christ

  2341. he who rides

  2342. to be crowned

  2343. will not think

  2344. much

  2345. of a rainy day

  2346. press

  2347. right on

  2348. through it

  2349. so in conclusion

  2350. suffering is a

  2351. primary means

  2352. by which we

  2353. are to spread

  2354. the gospel

  2355. of reconciliation

  2356. to all the peoples

  2357. of the world

  2358. in order to yield

  2359. God centered

  2360. Christ

  2361. exalting

  2362. churches

  2363. Christ family

  2364. church

  2365. exists

  2366. to glorify

  2367. God

  2368. by experiencing

  2369. proclaiming

  2370. and displaying

  2371. the supremacy

  2372. of Jesus Christ

  2373. in all things

  2374. including

  2375. our suffering

  2376. to

  2377. all

  2378. peoples

  2379. beloved

  2380. we must

  2381. ask ourselves

  2382. if we are

  2383. living to this

  2384. high mark

  2385. as a community

  2386. of faith

  2387. I am

  2388. confident

  2389. that we have

  2390. much work to do

  2391. and I am

  2392. confident that the

  2393. Lord will be

  2394. kind to us

  2395. as we study

  2396. the book of

  2397. Hebrews

  2398. together

  2399. let us

  2400. together

  2401. yield

  2402. ourselves

  2403. to the will

  2404. of the

  2405. Father

  2406. live such

  2407. radically

  2408. God oriented

  2409. lives

  2410. that come

  2411. what may

  2412. we will hold

  2413. high the

  2414. supremacy

  2415. of Jesus

  2416. Christ

  2417. so that

  2418. God will

  2419. draw men

  2420. to himself

  2421. for the praise

  2422. of his glory

  2423. let's pray

  2424. together

  2425. God
