  1. Morning, church. Open up your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 3.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  2. So I've had a lot of joy studying and preparing and getting ready for this morning

  3. ! Because we're going to talk about one of my favorite Bible characters, Moses.

  4. And Scripture has a lot to say about Moses, both in the New Testament,

  5. and this is just a tiny little piece of that.

  6. But before we dive in, let's go to the Lord in prayer again.

  7. I just want to ask Him to help us.

  8. Father, we come before You this morning just very thankful for Your presence with us.

  9. Knowing that if it were not for Jesus, we would still be outcasts.

  10. We still would be far away.

  11. But You have drawn us near and made us Your people through the blood of Jesus.

  12. And thank You that He is, even now, standing on our behalf as our advocate.

  13. He's our great, eternal, sympathetic High Priest.

  14. And we can just give You thanks for that, Father.

  15. So Lord, I pray You would just be our teacher this morning.

  16. Help us to focus, to hear Your Word,

  17. and to honor it by taking it from this place and by Your Spirit being obedient.

  18. So we just give this time to You, Father.

  19. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  20. Alright, Hebrews chapter 3.

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  21. And so you know, I'm sure most of you have been around long enough.

  22. Without giving you a long spiel, the book of Hebrews is written to a Jewish audience.

  23. And it's written to Jews who have left behind Judaism and are kind of being tempted and even persecuted to kind of come back to the old faith,

  24. kind of return because Jesus is a hoax, like what you're believing.

  25. All you have is a dead Messiah.

  26. We have a temple.

  27. We have a sacrificial system.

  28. We have all these traditions.

  29. What do you have other than a dead carpenter from Galilee?

  30. And the writer of Hebrews is refuting that by saying, by honoring the old covenant,

  31. but also saying Jesus is much better, far greater, far superior than anything in the old covenant.

  32. So you have some people who have crossed over into following Christ,

  33. some who are on the other side trying to get the Jews to come back.

  34. And some that are on the fence not knowing which way to jump.

  35. And so it's a helpful study tool when you're reading Hebrews to kind of figure out which group is he talking to,

  36. those who are kind of threatening to, you know, return, the ones who are standing firm in the faith.

  37. So just a little study tip there.

  38. But to reconnect, just rewind just a couple verses to chapter 2, verse 17, where Nathan preached last week.

  39. He says,

  40. He says,

  41. So Christ was obedient to the point of death and the death on the cross.

  42. And so we'll pick up in chapter 3 from there, because the therefore is connecting to what he just said.

  43. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  44. Therefore,

  45. Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that were to be spoken later.

  46. So, therefore, in light of Jesus being this great high priest, he says,

  47. Holy brothers,

  48. He said,

  49. So,

  50. That's when he's standing on the Red Sea and everybody's panicking and the chariots are closing in.

  51. He says,

  52. Such a great image.

  53. Such a great image in my head.

  54. So, he was definitely a true Bible.

  55. I found that I think I think I think I was a reluctant, he was a reluctant, hesitant leader.

  56. And I feel like I'm a Christian.

  57. He said,

  58. And later on, he's a Christian.

  59. And later on, he appointed elders to help rule over the nation of Israel.

  60. But I do wish at times, and I'm kind of content, and I'm kind of content, and I'm kind of content of myself with that.

  61. That's how God made us.

  62. That's how God made us.

  63. And I want to give you just a few bullet points here of why Moses is so important.

  64. Incredibly important.

  65. Incredibly important.

  66. Incredibly important.

  67. So why Moses?

  68. It's like, why is the writer kind of pointing this out?

  69. But, number one, Moses was graciously chosen by God to be his instrument for an epic task.

  70. We know that.

  71. Exodus chapter 2 talks about how he was divinely preserved from Pharaoh's edict

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  72. and the slaughter of the male children,

  73. and how his mother and his sister placed him in a basket to float him down the Nile.

  74. And he was providentially led.

  75. Have you ever, like, watched videos about the Nile?

  76. Some of you may actually have even seen the Nile.

  77. It's a pretty crazy river.

  78. And the fact that it was led right to Pharaoh's daughter was completely by the hand of God.

  79. He was plucked right from the bulrushes, and he was given a noble upbringing.

  80. The name Moses is actually an Egyptian name, not a Hebrew name.

  81. And it means drawn out, rescued from the water, which is what happened to him.

  82. If I may, I'll nerd out just for a second.

  83. Can't help it.

  84. We know that in 1 Kings chapter 6, where Solomon built his temple.

    1 Kings 6 chapter mention

  85. We know that Solomon built the temple in 967 B.C., a long time ago.

  86. But it says in 1 Kings 6,

  87. And if you pick up on that, what it's saying is,

  88. this many years ago from the building of Solomon's temple is when the nation came out of Egypt.

  89. And if you rewind, you land on the 18th dynasty of Egypt.

  90. Pretty cool.

  91. Most of the movies have it wrong.

  92. I don't think it was Ramesses.

  93. But here's what's cool about it.

  94. It's for, when you add that to 967 B.C., plus 480, you get 1446 B.C., a long time ago.

  95. Egypt's 18th dynasty.

  96. The ruler was Tutmosis III, a ruthless conqueror.

  97. And he had a stepmother named Hapshepsut, which was the daughter of Pharaoh.

  98. And more than likely, like she's written a lot about,

  99. she ruled for about 20 years until Tutmosis III became of age.

  100. And he was furious with her.

  101. He erased a lot of her images and did a lot of other things.

  102. But the fact that Egyptian history makes much out of this one queen, this one daughter of Pharaoh,

  103. I like to think it might have been her.

  104. That's my theory.

  105. Come talk to me later if you want to nerd out on that.

  106. But Moses was chosen for that task by God.

  107. Number two, Moses was used of God to be an incomparable deliverer of his people

  108. through an unparalleled display of power.

  109. He was a deliverer through using incredible power given to him or worked through him by God.

  110. Exodus 7 and 12 talks about how he delivered the Hebrews from bondage in Egypt,

  111. turned the Nile to blood,

  112. plagues,

  113. parting of the Red Sea,

  114. splitting of the rock and the wilderness,

  115. and making water gush out of it.

  116. Like, you don't see many more,

  117. I guess,

  118. powerful images of God's power than you do,

  119. sort of, in the life of Moses a lot of the time.

  120. Like, what imagery all that is.

  121. So, then he brought his people to the foot of Mount Sinai,

  122. which is in modern-day Saudi Arabia, again, in my opinion.

  123. And thirdly,

  124. Moses served as the greatest prophet of Israel.

  125. He spoke boldly to the people of God,

  126. through God.

  127. God said,

  128. Tell them this,

  129. and he did.

  130. And he gave the Ten Commandments,

  131. God's holy law,

  132. brought that down for the people.

  133. And even today,

  134. it serves as like a measuring rod of all other laws out there.

  135. Number four,

  136. Moses was the first writer of the Bible,

  137. known as the first historian of the Hebrews,

  138. and under divine inspiration,

  139. recorded the first five books of the Bible.

  140. That was Moses.

  141. Pretty cool.

  142. Then lastly,

  143. number five,

  144. Moses was marked.

  145. This is what I would want so bad,

  146. out of my life.

  147. Moses was marked

  148. as the humblest of all God's servants ever to walk the earth.

  149. And he was greatly privileged to speak with God,

  150. plainly and simply,

  151. as a friend does,

  152. face to face.

  153. Man,

  154. what a privilege.

  155. Now,

  156. keep your hand,

  157. or keep a mark in Hebrews,

  158. but just flip to Exodus 33 really quick.

  159. Exodus 33.

  160. And some of the points I just read to you,

  161. you'll see in some of these texts I'm about to read,

  162. but I just want you to flip to one of them,

  163. and I'll read you a couple of others.

  164. But Exodus chapter 33,

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  165. where the nation is gathered at Mount Sinai,

  166. and Exodus 33 verse 8.

    Exodus 33:8

  167. It says,

  168. whenever Moses went out to the tent,

  169. the tabernacle,

  170. all the people would rise up,

  171. and each would stand at his tent door

  172. and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent.

  173. And when Moses entered the tent,

  174. the pillar of cloud would descend

  175. and stand at the entrance of the tent.

  176. And the Lord would speak with Moses.

  177. And when all the people saw the pillar of clouds

  178. standing at the entrance of the tent,

  179. all the people would rise up and worship,

  180. each at his tent door.

  181. Thus,

  182. the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face

  183. as a man speaks to his friend.

  184. Man,

  185. how can you not want that?

  186. And what a privilege that was.

  187. The whole nation stood away in fear

  188. that Moses was allowed to go in.

  189. And in Numbers 12,

  190. I'll read you some stuff from Numbers 12.

  191. When I was saying he was the most humblest of God's servants.

  192. It says,

  193. Now the man Moses was very meek,

  194. more than all the people who were on the face of the earth.

  195. And he said,

  196. the Lord said,

  197. Hear my words.

  198. If there is a prophet among you,

  199. I, the Lord,

  200. make myself known to him in a vision.

  201. I speak with him in a dream.

  202. But not so with my servant Moses.

  203. He is faithful in all my house.

  204. And with him,

  205. I speak mouth to mouth,

  206. clearly and not in riddles.

  207. And he beholds the form of the Lord.

  208. So in other words,

  209. God does speak through the other prophets,

  210. but he does so in a mysterious way,

  211. through dreams,

  212. visions.

  213. But he's like,

  214. not Moses.

  215. I speak plainly and clearly to him

  216. in a very intimate context.

  217. And then Deuteronomy 34,

  218. a couple of verses.

  219. But this was the last thing written of Moses.

  220. And I think Joshua probably actually picked up the pen

  221. and wrote this in my opinion.

  222. But Deuteronomy 34,

    Deuteronomy 34:10

  223. verse 10 says,

  224. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses,

  225. whom the Lord knew face to face,

  226. none like him for all the signs and wonders

  227. that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt,

  228. to Pharaoh and all his servants,

  229. and to all his land.

  230. Listen to this.

  231. And for all the mighty power

  232. and all the great deeds of terror

  233. that Moses did in the sight of Israel.

  234. So,

  235. Moses is a huge deal.

  236. Huge deal.

  237. And God honored him as such.

  238. So,

  239. our writer,

  240. getting back to Hebrews now,

  241. you can flip back over.

  242. Our writer,

  243. it's important to kind of understand this.

  244. He is not cutting down Moses.

  245. He's not trying to belittle Moses

  246. or take away from Moses at all.

  247. And he does so by first kind of comparing Moses,

  248. making comparison between Moses and Jesus.

  249. In verse 2,

  250. chapter 3,

  251. it shows that both Moses and Jesus

  252. were faithful

  253. and trustworthy

  254. in the work that God gave them to do.

  255. They both carried out

  256. the work God gave them.

  257. And they were faithful in God's house,

  258. which is a picture of God's people.

  259. And he does that by quoting what I just read to you

  260. out of Numbers 12,

  261. where it says,

  262. verse 2 there,

  263. it says,

  264. Jesus

  265. was faithful to him,

  266. who was God the Father,

  267. who appointed him

  268. just as he,

  269. just as Moses

  270. also was faithful

  271. in all of God's house.

  272. So he wanted that Jewish audience

  273. to understand that.

  274. I'm not taking anything away

  275. from Moses.

  276. Like,

  277. what an honored

  278. and incredible man

  279. Moses was.

  280. He was faithful

  281. in his work

  282. that God gave him to do.

  283. Both Jesus and Moses

  284. fulfilled their God-appointed roles.

  285. And so although Jesus

  286. is superior to Moses,

  287. Moses deserves tremendous respect,

  288. which actually makes Jesus

  289. look even better

  290. because Moses has such high respect.

  291. So he wishes to honor Moses

  292. by making a comparison,

  293. but then he makes a contrast

  294. in the next part of this.

  295. So Christ is superior to Moses.

  296. You see this in verse 3.

  297. Jesus has been accounted worthy

  298. of more glory than Moses.

  299. And a tremendous contrast.

  300. Moses was one of a kind

  301. in his day

  302. with more of an intimate relationship

  303. with God

  304. than anyone else.

  305. So he's just saying

  306. in the beginning of this,

  307. consider Jesus.

  308. The word consider.

  309. Like,

  310. stop doing what you're doing.

  311. Focus.

  312. Hone in on this.

  313. Think about it.

  314. Ponder it.

  315. Meditate on it.

  316. Consider why Jesus

  317. is more glorious

  318. than Moses.

  319. Right?

  320. So,

  321. in the end of this,

  322. why we need to do this,

  323. like why this is important,

  324. you'll see

  325. at the end of our text

  326. because it's going to give us

  327. great hope

  328. and confidence

  329. in our faith

  330. if we actually look

  331. and see this comparison

  332. or this contrast.

  333. If we hold fast

  334. our confidence

  335. in the boast

  336. of our hope

  337. firm until the end,

  338. which is what

  339. Hebrews 3.6 says.

  340. So let's look at

  341. two ways

  342. that the writer

  343. makes the contrast

  344. to say Jesus

  345. is superior to Moses.

  346. There's two ways.

  347. Number one,

  348. consider Jesus'

  349. superior vocation.

  350. Consider Jesus'

  351. superior vocation.

  352. See this in verse

  353. three and four.

  354. It says,

  355. as much more glory

  356. as the builder

  357. of a house

  358. has more honor

  359. than the house itself.

  360. For every house

  361. is built

  362. by someone

  363. but the builder

  364. of all things

  365. is God.

  366. So the first comparison

  367. is relationship

  368. to the house.

  369. Jesus is the builder

  370. of the house

  371. but Moses is just

  372. a part of the house.

  373. The spiritual household

  374. of God.

  375. And it was common

  376. and I don't know

  377. if this is still true

  378. but in the ancient world

  379. it was really common

  380. to equate

  381. the architect

  382. with more glory

  383. than what they actually built.

  384. which is kind of

  385. a foreign concept today.

  386. But like

  387. every artist,

  388. every architect

  389. would have great honor

  390. like more than

  391. what they actually have made.

  392. And so

  393. trying to think of

  394. an analogy

  395. but it's going to

  396. really fall short.

  397. Imagine three of the

  398. greatest athletes

  399. out there.

  400. Nolan Ryan,

  401. one of my favorite.

  402. 5,714 strikeouts.

  403. Still holds the record.

  404. And he knocked out

  405. a guy one time

  406. and charged the mound too.

  407. So

  408. Michael Jordan,

  409. probably the best

  410. basketball player ever.

  411. I don't know why

  412. I threw Tom Brady

  413. in the air.

  414. It was just really late

  415. when I was figuring this out.

  416. Tom Brady,

  417. six Super Bowl rings.

  418. Ridiculous.

  419. And then

  420. throw in somebody else

  421. that you just

  422. thinks all that.

  423. Nolan Ryan,

  424. Michael Jordan,

  425. Tom Brady,

  426. and Jesus.

  427. Sitting around

  428. discussing

  429. how amazing

  430. their careers were

  431. and how great

  432. they were.

  433. Kind of acting

  434. humbly on the outside

  435. but inwardly thinking

  436. I'm better than

  437. these guys.

  438. like,

  439. I deserve

  440. much more

  441. glory

  442. than these guys.

  443. But acting

  444. humbly on the outside.

  445. And when they're

  446. done talking

  447. around their mouths

  448. they look over

  449. to Jesus and say,

  450. how about you Jesus?

  451. And in true

  452. humility,

  453. like inwardly

  454. and outwardly

  455. he just says to them,

  456. well,

  457. well fellows

  458. at some point

  459. in history

  460. you ceased

  461. to exist

  462. until I spoke

  463. you into being.

  464. I created

  465. and fashioned you.

  466. I made your minds,

  467. your hearts,

  468. your legs,

  469. your arms.

  470. I sustained you

  471. from your mother's womb

  472. and I still sustain you

  473. even now.

  474. And I gave you

  475. the skills

  476. that you have.

  477. So actually,

  478. boys,

  479. I'm the greatest.

  480. And he says that

  481. in like the truest

  482. humility.

  483. Like he

  484. made us.

  485. He made Moses.

  486. He created

  487. Moses.

  488. And he created

  489. us.

  490. So Jesus

  491. is to the people

  492. of God

  493. as the builder

  494. is to a house.

  495. Moses was just

  496. a part of

  497. God's house.

  498. So Moses

  499. is,

  500. let's see here,

  501. best way to phrase this,

  502. Jesus made Moses,

  503. he made us,

  504. and this

  505. gives us,

  506. like,

  507. look at verse 4

  508. real quick,

  509. gives us,

  510. for every house

  511. is built by someone,

  512. but the builder

  513. of all things

  514. is God.

  515. God.

  516. And then in verse 3

  517. it says that

  518. Jesus made

  519. the house

  520. of God.

  521. He's the maker

  522. of all things.

  523. Remember chapter 1

  524. how God

  525. created all things

  526. through him?

  527. Chapter 1,

  528. verse 2

  529. of Hebrews.

  530. He is the

  531. son of God.

  532. So they were

  533. both faithful,

  534. but

  535. Jesus

  536. actually built

  537. the house

  538. and he made

  539. Moses.

  540. Well,

  541. Moses is just

  542. a part of

  543. that house.

  544. So he is

  545. worthy of

  546. much more glory

  547. than Moses

  548. as the builder

  549. is

  550. to a house.

  551. So never be

  552. haughty about

  553. what you've

  554. accomplished

  555. or what you

  556. think you've

  557. done

  558. or how great

  559. you are.

  560. You don't

  561. come close

  562. to Moses.

  563. No one

  564. does.

  565. But Jesus

  566. made you

  567. and so

  568. when you

  569. boast,

  570. boast only

  571. in the Lord

  572. that he

  573. has given

  574. you every

  575. good thing

  576. that you

  577. have.

  578. to only

  579. boast in

  580. Christ.

  581. So that's

  582. the first

  583. one.

  584. Consider

  585. Jesus'

  586. superior

  587. vocation

  588. or his

  589. superior

  590. work

  591. that he

  592. did.

  593. And

  594. number

  595. two,

  596. you see

  597. this in

  598. verses 5

  599. and 6,

  600. consider

  601. Jesus,

  602. Jesus'

  603. superior

  604. person.

  605. Consider

  606. Jesus'

  607. superior

  608. person.

  609. Right?

  610. Verse 5,

  611. now Moses

  612. was faithful

  613. in all

  614. God's

  615. house as

  616. a servant

  617. to testify

  618. to the

  619. things that

  620. were to

  621. be spoken

  622. later.

  623. But Christ

  624. is faithful

  625. over God's

  626. house as

  627. a son.

  628. So,

  629. there's a

  630. really easy

  631. comparison

  632. there.

  633. Moses

  634. was incredible.

  635. He was a

  636. servant and

  637. he served

  638. faithfully as

  639. a servant,

  640. but Jesus

  641. is a son

  642. of that

  643. house.

  644. Huge

  645. comparison,

  646. huge

  647. difference.

  648. But again,

  649. the writer is

  650. not trying to

  651. take away from

  652. Moses at

  653. all.

  654. I actually

  655. read about

  656. this.

  657. The word

  658. servant here

  659. that's used

  660. for Moses

  661. is the

  662. only time

  663. this word

  664. is actually

  665. used in

  666. the New

  667. Testament.

  668. Servant.

  669. But what

  670. it means

  671. is an

  672. honored

  673. servant

  674. who is

  675. far above

  676. a slave,

  677. but yet

  678. still is a

  679. servant.

  680. Wow,

  681. that's

  682. singling

  683. Moses out

  684. and bringing

  685. him up a

  686. notch,

  687. actually.

  688. So he's

  689. still honoring

  690. Moses,

  691. but in

  692. the house

  693. of God,

  694. Moses showed

  695. great trust

  696. in him.

  697. He refused

  698. the privileges

  699. and rights

  700. of living

  701. a wealthy

  702. life in

  703. Egypt as

  704. Pharaoh's

  705. son,

  706. chose to

  707. associate

  708. with his

  709. people in

  710. slavery instead,

  711. and he

  712. showed fervent

  713. obedience,

  714. right?

  715. Like he was

  716. such a

  717. humble guy.

  718. He followed

  719. the task

  720. that the

  721. Lord gave

  722. him,

  723. and he

  724. was the

  725. intercessor

  726. of the

  727. people.

  728. Even though

  729. Aaron was

  730. the high

  731. priest and

  732. his family

  733. kind of

  734. followed him

  735. that,

  736. Aaron let

  737. the people

  738. down a

  739. lot,

  740. and Moses

  741. was the

  742. true

  743. intercessor

  744. of the

  745. people.

  746. He was

  747. such a

  748. humble and

  749. faithful man.

  750. But,

  751. as we read,

  752. it says,

  753. Moses testified

  754. to the things

  755. that were to

  756. be spoken

  757. later.

  758. meaning he

  759. testified of

  760. Christ.

  761. He talked

  762. about Jesus.

  763. Hold your

  764. hand, but

  765. there's only

  766. two places

  767. for you to

  768. look after

  769. this, but

  770. John 5,

  771. this is

  772. incredible.

  773. John

    John 5:39

  774. chapter 5,

  775. verse 39,

  776. Jesus is

  777. in a

  778. holy argument

  779. with religious

  780. leaders,

  781. and he's

  782. putting them

  783. in their

  784. place,

  785. but they

  786. are rejecting

  787. him,

  788. they are

  789. angry with

  790. him,

  791. and this

  792. is what he

  793. says to

  794. them,

  795. John 5,

    John 5:39

  796. verse 39,

  797. he says,

  798. you search

  799. the scriptures

  800. because you

  801. think that in

  802. them you have

  803. eternal life,

  804. and it is

  805. they that bear

  806. witness about

  807. me,

  808. yet you refuse

  809. to come to

  810. me that you

  811. may have

  812. life.

  813. stop there,

  814. like,

  815. this is an

  816. incredible gift

  817. of God,

  818. but just

  819. knowing facts

  820. about this

  821. won't bring

  822. you life.

  823. It's about

  824. knowing the

  825. Savior that

  826. this testifies

  827. of.

  828. Jesus says

  829. that right

  830. here,

  831. these bear

  832. witness about

  833. me, but

  834. you didn't

  835. come to

  836. me.

  837. So,

  838. sobering

  839. warning,

  840. so go to

  841. Jesus,

  842. the one that

  843. this testifies

  844. of.

  845. Then he

  846. says,

  847. I do not

  848. receive glory

  849. from people,

  850. but I know

  851. that you do

  852. not have the

  853. love of God

  854. within you.

  855. I have come

  856. in my

  857. Father's name,

  858. and you do

  859. not receive

  860. me.

  861. If another

  862. comes in his

  863. own name,

  864. you receive

  865. him.

  866. How can you

  867. believe when

  868. you receive

  869. glory from

  870. one another

  871. and do not

  872. seek the

  873. glory that

  874. comes from

  875. the only

  876. God?

  877. Listen to

  878. this,

  879. do not

  880. think that

  881. I will

  882. accuse you

  883. to my

  884. Father.

  885. There is

  886. one who

  887. accuses you,

  888. Moses,

  889. on whom

  890. you have

  891. set your

  892. hope.

  893. For if

  894. you had

  895. believed

  896. Moses,

  897. you would

  898. have

  899. believed

  900. me,

  901. for he

  902. wrote

  903. about me.

  904. But if

  905. you do

  906. not believe

  907. his

  908. writings,

  909. how will

  910. you believe

  911. my words?

  912. Man.

  913. Jesus

  914. was spoken

  915. of by

  916. Moses.

  917. in

  918. Deuteronomy

  919. and other

  920. places,

  921. he says,

  922. I will

  923. raise up

  924. a prophet

  925. that will

  926. speak the

  927. words of

  928. God,

  929. and you

  930. must listen

  931. to him.

  932. He is

  933. to come

  934. from this

  935. people,

  936. and he

  937. is to

  938. speak the

  939. words of

  940. God,

  941. listen to

  942. him.

  943. And then

  944. we also

  945. know the

  946. image of

  947. Jesus,

  948. and later

  949. in John

  950. 3,

  951. saying,

  952. as Moses

  953. raised up a

  954. bronze serpent

  955. in the

  956. desert,

  957. so the

  958. all would

  959. look upon

  960. that bronze

  961. serpent in

  962. faith,

  963. in faith,

  964. and believe

  965. they would be

  966. saved,

  967. they would

  968. be spared

  969. death.

  970. And that

  971. was a

  972. picture,

  973. an image

  974. of Jesus,

  975. us looking

  976. to him

  977. to be

  978. saved.

  979. So,

  980. Jesus

  981. is the

  982. son of

  983. the house

  984. of God.

  985. Moses is

  986. the servant

  987. of the house

  988. of God.

  989. And the

  990. differences are

  991. immense between

  992. a servant

  993. and a son.

  994. The son

  995. obtained

  996. inheritance,

  997. the inheritance.

  998. He was the

  999. Lord over

  1000. the house.

  1001. He provided

  1002. for all the

  1003. servants in

  1004. the house.

  1005. out of his

  1006. own wealth.

  1007. But servants

  1008. didn't own

  1009. anything in

  1010. the house.

  1011. They received

  1012. provision from

  1013. the master

  1014. and they

  1015. followed the

  1016. words of

  1017. the master.

  1018. Moses is

  1019. just that

  1020. servant.

  1021. He doesn't

  1022. own the

  1023. house.

  1024. He doesn't

  1025. provide for

  1026. anything in

  1027. the house.

  1028. He follows

  1029. the word

  1030. of the

  1031. master.

  1032. So,

  1033. Jesus is

  1034. the son,

  1035. the superior

  1036. to Moses.

  1037. Those three

  1038. ways,

  1039. Jesus owns

  1040. the house,

  1041. he rules

  1042. it,

  1043. and he

  1044. provides for

  1045. it.

  1046. So,

  1047. we have

  1048. to consider

  1049. Jesus as

  1050. the son

  1051. of God,

  1052. a privileged

  1053. place in

  1054. the household

  1055. of God,

  1056. while Moses

  1057. still honored,

  1058. yet remains a

  1059. servant in

  1060. that house.

  1061. But,

  1062. again,

  1063. I think

  1064. Jesus himself

  1065. honored Moses

  1066. more than we

  1067. could ever

  1068. imagine.

  1069. this is

  1070. the last

  1071. place I

  1072. want you

  1073. to turn,

  1074. but look

  1075. at Luke

  1076. 9.

  1077. Luke

    Luke 9:28

  1078. chapter

  1079. 9,

  1080. verse

  1081. 28.

  1082. The

  1083. transfiguration.

  1084. Alright?

  1085. And Luke

    Luke 9:28

  1086. 9,

  1087. verse 28.

  1088. Now,

  1089. about eight

  1090. days after

  1091. these sayings,

  1092. he took

  1093. with him

  1094. Peter,

  1095. John,

  1096. and James,

  1097. and went

  1098. up on the

  1099. mountain to

  1100. pray.

  1101. And as he

  1102. was praying,

  1103. the appearance

  1104. of his face

  1105. was altered,

  1106. and his

  1107. clothing became

  1108. dazzling white.

  1109. And behold,

  1110. two men were

  1111. talking with him,

  1112. Moses and

  1113. Elijah,

  1114. who appeared

  1115. in glory and

  1116. spoke of his

  1117. departure,

  1118. which he was

  1119. about to

  1120. accomplish at

  1121. Jerusalem.

  1122. Now,

  1123. Peter and those

  1124. who were with

  1125. him were

  1126. heavy with

  1127. sleep,

  1128. but when

  1129. they became

  1130. fully awake,

  1131. they saw

  1132. his glory

  1133. and the two

  1134. men who

  1135. stood with

  1136. him.

  1137. And as

  1138. the men

  1139. were parting

  1140. from him,

  1141. Peter,

  1142. of course

  1143. Peter,

  1144. said to

  1145. Jesus,

  1146. Master,

  1147. it is good

  1148. that we are

  1149. here.

  1150. Let us

  1151. make three

  1152. tents,

  1153. one for

  1154. you,

  1155. and one

  1156. for Moses,

  1157. and one

  1158. for Elijah,

  1159. not knowing

  1160. what he

  1161. said.

  1162. And he

  1163. said,

  1164. he was

  1165. saying these

  1166. things,

  1167. a cloud

  1168. came and

  1169. overshadowed

  1170. them,

  1171. and they

  1172. were afraid

  1173. as they

  1174. entered the

  1175. cloud.

  1176. And a

  1177. voice came

  1178. out of the

  1179. cloud,

  1180. saying,

  1181. this is

  1182. my son,

  1183. my chosen

  1184. one,

  1185. listen to

  1186. him.

  1187. And when

  1188. the voice

  1189. had spoken,

  1190. Jesus was

  1191. found alone,

  1192. and they

  1193. kept silent

  1194. and told no

  1195. one in those

  1196. days anything

  1197. of what

  1198. they had

  1199. seen.

  1200. Jesus'

  1201. face was

  1202. altered.

  1203. He was

  1204. illuminating

  1205. from within.

  1206. The

  1207. dazzling

  1208. white

  1209. phrase

  1210. that's used

  1211. there means

  1212. bright as a

  1213. flash of

  1214. lightning.

  1215. A glimpse

  1216. of the

  1217. glory of

  1218. Christ.

  1219. So this

  1220. isn't Moses

  1221. and Elijah

  1222. reincarnated,

  1223. this is

  1224. Moses and

  1225. Elijah

  1226. standing there

  1227. coming from

  1228. the presence

  1229. of God

  1230. to speak

  1231. with Christ.

  1232. And at

  1233. least in

  1234. the Old

  1235. Testament,

  1236. Moses

  1237. represents

  1238. the law,

  1239. Elijah

  1240. represents

  1241. the prophets,

  1242. how Jesus

  1243. is fulfilling

  1244. both of

  1245. those.

  1246. But do you

  1247. remember in

  1248. Exodus 34

  1249. when Moses

  1250. came down

  1251. off the

  1252. mountain and

  1253. his face

  1254. was radiant

  1255. because he

  1256. had been

  1257. deep in

  1258. the presence

  1259. of God?

  1260. He was

  1261. reflecting

  1262. the presence

  1263. of God

  1264. but Jesus

  1265. was radiating

  1266. it.

  1267. It was

  1268. coming out

  1269. of him

  1270. like it

  1271. was within

  1272. him not

  1273. without.

  1274. Jesus is

  1275. superior in

  1276. this person

  1277. because he

  1278. radiates the

  1279. glory of

  1280. God from

  1281. the inside

  1282. because he

  1283. is God.

  1284. But he

  1285. honored

  1286. Moses.

  1287. Moses got

  1288. to stand

  1289. there and

  1290. speak with

  1291. him.

  1292. How humbly

  1293. that must

  1294. have been.

  1295. What a

  1296. sight.

  1297. in

  1298. conclusion

  1299. go back

  1300. to Hebrews

  1301. verse 6

  1302. chapter 3

  1303. what is

  1304. some of

  1305. the meaning

  1306. for us

  1307. because the

  1308. writer wants

  1309. us to

  1310. immediately

  1311. apply this

  1312. to where

  1313. we are

  1314. in our

  1315. relationship

  1316. with Christ.

  1317. It says

  1318. and we

  1319. are his

  1320. house

  1321. if indeed

  1322. we hold

  1323. fast our

  1324. confidence

  1325. and our

  1326. boasting

  1327. and our

  1328. hope.

  1329. That means

  1330. this morning

  1331. not just

  1332. in Moses'

  1333. day but

  1334. this morning

  1335. Christ is

  1336. our creator

  1337. our maker

  1338. our provider

  1339. remember all

  1340. the things

  1341. that the

  1342. son does

  1343. in the

  1344. house

  1345. he rules

  1346. over the

  1347. house

  1348. he gives

  1349. us what

  1350. we need

  1351. and Moses

  1352. is a fellow

  1353. servant

  1354. along with

  1355. us even

  1356. though he

  1357. was singled

  1358. out to be

  1359. the greatest

  1360. of servants

  1361. we are

  1362. his house

  1363. we are

  1364. his people

  1365. we are

  1366. partakers

  1367. of the

  1368. divine

  1369. nature

  1370. and a

  1371. heavenly

  1372. calling

  1373. if we

  1374. hold fast

  1375. our

  1376. confidence

  1377. and boast

  1378. until the

  1379. end.

  1380. So we

  1381. need to

  1382. understand

  1383. that there

  1384. are

  1385. descriptions

  1386. like this

  1387. in the

  1388. Bible

  1389. that call

  1390. believers

  1391. to

  1392. persevere

  1393. if you

  1394. remain

  1395. if you

  1396. stay in

  1397. the

  1398. faith

  1399. if you

  1400. remain

  1401. steadfast

  1402. you have

  1403. reason for

  1404. great

  1405. confidence

  1406. because God

  1407. is at

  1408. work

  1409. within you

  1410. and we

  1411. can have

  1412. that great

  1413. trust and

  1414. confidence

  1415. because Jesus

  1416. is superior

  1417. to Moses

  1418. he is the

  1419. one that

  1420. we are

  1421. hanging all

  1422. our hope

  1423. on

  1424. this life

  1425. and

  1426. eternal

  1427. life

  1428. afterwards

  1429. all rest

  1430. on Jesus

  1431. so we

  1432. have to

  1433. consider him

  1434. as great

  1435. as Moses

  1436. was

  1437. he was

  1438. far

  1439. greater

  1440. so there's

  1441. a call

  1442. here

  1443. to persevere

  1444. to hang

  1445. on

  1446. to keep

  1447. the confidence

  1448. that you

  1449. have

  1450. as a

  1451. follower

  1452. of Jesus

  1453. so

  1454. think about

  1455. where your

  1456. hope is

  1457. think about

  1458. where your

  1459. confidence

  1460. is this

  1461. morning

  1462. and no

  1463. matter

  1464. where

  1465. to stop

  1466. and consider

  1467. Jesus

  1468. how

  1469. great

  1470. he was

  1471. he was

  1472. the builder

  1473. of the

  1474. house

  1475. he made

  1476. the house

  1477. he made

  1478. us

  1479. and he is

  1480. the son

  1481. of God

  1482. and not

  1483. just a

  1484. servant

  1485. so

  1486. that's our

  1487. text today

  1488. let's pray

  1489. together
