  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn with me to the book of 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  2. We may all remember Mother's Day 2019 as the Sunday that it got a little rock and roll at Christ Family Church.

  3. There's a little white stripes going on on the stage, I think.

  4. It's good stuff.

  5. I commend you guys for that.

  6. It's great.

  7. Our text for this morning is 2 Timothy chapter 3, verses 14 through 17.

    2 Timothy 3:14–17

  8. As we take a break this morning from our verse-by-verse exposition of the book of Hebrews,

  9. it's my intention to be an encouragement to the mothers and future mothers of our congregation.

  10. You may find some challenge in God's Word to us this morning,

  11. but I want you to know that I believe that the mothers of our church work hard to excel in the training of their children,

  12. and this does not go unnoticed.

  13. Moms, we know you are working at this.

  14. I know that your job as mothers can often seem mundane and unending,

  15. and that it is always exhausting.

  16. So I want you to be encouraged this morning to persist by grace,

  17. to train your children as God will use you to yield fruit in their lives.

  18. If you are not a mother or future mother ever planning on being a mother,

  19. like you may be a man in the room,

  20. I hope that this morning will help aim your prayers for the moms of our congregation.

  21. So with that in mind, let's take a look at 2 Timothy chapter 3, verses 14 through 17.

    2 Timothy 3:14–17

  22. Beloved, this is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good.

  23. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  24. Paul writes,

  25. In verse 14, Timothy is exhorted by Paul to continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed,

  26. as opposed to, set up against, in juxtaposition to, the men of verse 13.

  27. Paul says they're evil people and imposters,

  28. that will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.

  29. It's in light of that statement in verse 13,

  30. that he's now exhorting Timothy to continue,

  31. but you continue in what you have learned and firmly believed.

  32. And then Paul encourages him to faithfulness to those things with the phrase,

  33. knowing from whom you learned it.

  34. Paul states that remembering the godly people from whom you learned the truth

  35. is a source of strength and of encouragement.

  36. Continue in the things you learned because of who taught them to you.

  37. And Timothy learned the truth that he has learned and has firmly believed by being instructed,

  38. we see this in verse 15,

  39. in the sacred writings,

  40. and also we see in verse 16,

  41. Paul tells us this is the Scripture.

  42. Timothy had been taught the Bible.

  43. But who is it that taught Timothy the Bible?

  44. Timothy learned the Scripture from his family.

  45. Timothy's mother was a Christian.

  46. His father, unfortunately, and as far as we know, was not.

  47. And we know this from Acts chapter 16 and verse 1,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  48. where Luke writes,

  49. Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra.

  50. A disciple was there named Timothy,

  51. the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer.

  52. He was a follower of Christ, a believer in the way.

  53. And then Luke writes,

  54. but his father,

  55. in opposition to, in difference to,

  56. was a Greek.

  57. He doesn't say that he was a believing Greek.

  58. He's speaking to his ethnicity, to be sure.

  59. He just says that he's a Greek.

  60. He doesn't include any reality that he's a follower of Christ there.

  61. We know later, 1 Timothy 1, verse 2,

    1 Timothy 1:2

  62. that Paul became Timothy's spiritual father.

  63. He adopted him in that sense,

  64. where we read,

  65. to Timothy, my true child in the faith.

  66. So, Timothy was also instructed by Paul in the way of the Lord.

  67. A bit earlier in chapter 3 of 2 Timothy,

  68. verses 10 and the first part of 11,

  69. we can read,

  70. you, however, have followed my teaching,

  71. this is Paul speaking,

  72. my conduct,

  73. my aim in life,

  74. my faith,

  75. my patience,

  76. my love,

  77. my steadfastness,

  78. my persecutions,

  79. and sufferings.

  80. And so we have Timothy learning from his mother.

  81. We have Timothy learning from Paul

  82. as a spiritual father,

  83. and likely,

  84. his grandmother.

  85. You see in the first part of verse 15,

  86. and how from childhood you've been acquainted

  87. with the sacred writings.

  88. And in chapter 1 of 2 Timothy,

  89. verse 5,

  90. Paul writes,

  91. I'm reminded of your sincere faith,

  92. a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois,

  93. and your mother Eunice,

  94. and now, I am sure,

  95. dwells in you as well.

  96. So, God-fearing Christ-following mother,

  97. God-fearing Christ-following grandmother,

  98. instructing young Timothy

  99. in the sacred writings in the Scripture,

  100. and then Paul as a spiritual father to him,

  101. instructing him in the manner

  102. that he should walk.

  103. So, Timothy is instructed.

  104. He is trained in the Bible

  105. by Paul as an adult,

  106. but also as a child,

  107. he becomes acquainted with the Scripture.

  108. That is to say,

  109. Timothy knew his Bible

  110. from an early age.

  111. God worked saving faith in Jesus Christ

  112. into Timothy

  113. through the labors of his mother

  114. and grandmother.

  115. Recall that when Paul encounters him

  116. in Acts chapter 16,

    Acts 16 chapter mention

  117. he's already there called a disciple.

  118. He's already a follower of Jesus Christ.

  119. God has used the work of his mother

  120. and his grandmother

  121. and their instruction

  122. to bring him to saving faith.

  123. What an absolute blessing it is

  124. that God includes us

  125. in his saving purposes

  126. toward our children.

  127. He uses us as the means

  128. to bring our children

  129. to believe in him.

  130. And this is a blessing for us

  131. to get to participate

  132. in this way.

  133. Now, I would never argue

  134. that the church does not have a place

  135. in the instruction of children.

  136. That is not good

  137. for the gathered people of God

  138. to diminish the word of God

  139. to our gathered children.

  140. But I will argue

  141. that the responsibility

  142. of instructing children

  143. belongs firstly,

  144. primarily,

  145. to the family.

  146. Fathers and mothers

  147. loving their children

  148. with gospel truth.

  149. How can I say such a thing

  150. with any measure of authority?

  151. In many churches

  152. that function today

  153. as if the work

  154. of bringing children

  155. to Christ

  156. is entirely the work

  157. of the church

  158. and the work of the parent

  159. is to merely drive

  160. their children

  161. to gather

  162. with said church.

  163. There are many Christian leaders

  164. today

  165. that would strongly

  166. even disagree with me

  167. that aim most

  168. of their ministry

  169. at child evangelism

  170. and sadly altogether

  171. neglect the parent's

  172. spiritual maturity.

  173. I can make this claim

  174. because God's word

  175. makes this claim.

  176. And I want to give you

  177. just a couple of examples

  178. and we're going to do so

  179. from the book of Proverbs

  180. and I'll run through these

  181. quickly.

  182. You're welcome

  183. to try to join me

  184. if you'd like.

  185. Proverbs 22

  186. and verse 6.

  187. We read,

  188. Train up a child

  189. in the way he should go

  190. even when he is old

  191. he will not depart from it.

  192. Proverbs 23

    Proverbs 23:13

  193. verse 13 and 14.

  194. Do not withhold discipline

  195. from a child.

  196. If you strike him

  197. with a rod

  198. he will not die.

  199. If you strike him

  200. with a rod

  201. you will save his soul

  202. from Sheol.

  203. Now,

  204. neither of those two

  205. specifically say

  206. that this is

  207. the job of parents

  208. although I think

  209. most parents in the room

  210. would agree

  211. that I shouldn't

  212. strike your children

  213. with a rod.

  214. This is not my place.

  215. But,

  216. we can read on

  217. Proverbs chapter 29

    Proverbs 29 chapter mention

  218. and verse 17.

  219. More specifically here

  220. discipline

  221. your son

  222. and he will give you rest.

  223. He will give

  224. delight

  225. to your heart.

  226. Just a couple of examples

  227. of instruction

  228. in the Bible

  229. for parents

  230. to help train up

  231. their children.

  232. Charles Spurgeon

  233. once wrote,

  234. You are as much

  235. serving God

  236. and looking after

  237. your own children

  238. and training them up

  239. in God's fear

  240. and minding the house

  241. and making your household

  242. a church for God

  243. as you would be

  244. if you had been called

  245. to lead an army

  246. to battle

  247. for the Lord of hosts.

  248. It is a weighty

  249. and important task

  250. that's been given to us

  251. as parents.

  252. Mothers,

  253. it is a privilege

  254. to spend

  255. the day in

  256. and the day out

  257. with your little ones

  258. wiping

  259. snotty noses

  260. and teaching them

  261. to share.

  262. We need to be

  263. familiarized

  264. at all possible

  265. as young children

  266. with the sacred writings.

  267. We would know

  268. the gospel truths

  269. that we would be able

  270. to pick them up

  271. when God brings us

  272. to faith.

  273. But more specifically,

  274. right,

  275. and we're developing

  276. this idea

  277. and continue to,

  278. how are children

  279. trained for godliness?

  280. How predominantly

  281. and primarily

  282. are they trained?

  283. Right?

  284. It's not merely

  285. through

  286. moralistic shaping

  287. of our children.

  288. It includes that

  289. teaching them

  290. what is right

  291. and what is wrong.

  292. But doing that

  293. from a place

  294. of authority,

  295. right,

  296. as bringers

  297. of God's authority

  298. into their lives.

  299. We live in an age

  300. where people

  301. desperately

  302. need to understand

  303. authority.

  304. Authority is given

  305. to us as a good

  306. blessing for us,

  307. right,

  308. not as something

  309. to restrict

  310. our freedom.

  311. Deuteronomy 6,

    Deuteronomy 6:6

  312. verses 6 and 7,

  313. God says,

  314. and these words

  315. that I command you

  316. today shall be

  317. on your heart.

  318. You shall teach

  319. them diligently

  320. to your children

  321. and shall talk

  322. of them when you

  323. sit in your house

  324. and when you

  325. walk by the way

  326. and when you

  327. lie down

  328. and when you

  329. rise.

  330. So all the time,

  331. right,

  332. the good instruction

  333. of the Lord

  334. is to be taught

  335. to our children

  336. for their good.

  337. Mothers,

  338. you provide

  339. many necessary

  340. things for your

  341. children.

  342. Don't stop

  343. doing that.

  344. There's many

  345. things that they

  346. need that I know

  347. takes a lot

  348. of time,

  349. right?

  350. You keep them

  351. clothed and fed,

  352. but your children

  353. do not need

  354. a perfectly clean

  355. house.

  356. Stop trying to

  357. compete with the

  358. Pinterest moms.

  359. They're faking it

  360. anyway,

  361. right?

  362. Only that corner

  363. of the house

  364. is really that

  365. clean for that

  366. moment.

  367. They don't need

  368. wrinkle-free

  369. clothing.

  370. They honestly

  371. don't really even

  372. need clean clothes

  373. to be totally

  374. frank.

  375. They don't need

  376. the most exciting

  377. meals.

  378. They don't need

  379. to love everything

  380. that you put

  381. in front of them.

  382. In fact,

  383. it's probably good

  384. if they don't.

  385. They do need

  386. you.

  387. And they need

  388. your careful

  389. instruction in

  390. the scripture,

  391. right?

  392. Let the laundry

  393. stay unfolded

  394. if it means

  395. that you're

  396. going to neglect

  397. spending time

  398. in the Bible

  399. with your kids,

  400. right?

  401. Make that,

  402. right?

  403. Instructing them

  404. in the way

  405. of the Lord

  406. the priority

  407. and see if the

  408. other things

  409. appropriately fall

  410. into place.

  411. So our children

  412. need the good

  413. instruction of

  414. the word of God.

  415. We never

  416. outgrow our need

  417. of this instruction

  418. by the way.

  419. We're always

  420. in need

  421. of the instruction

  422. of God

  423. found in the

  424. scriptures.

  425. As the scripture

  426. is necessary

  427. for our salvation

  428. and it's also

  429. necessary for

  430. our sanctification,

  431. our continued

  432. growth in the

  433. Lord.

  434. And let's take

  435. a look at both

  436. of these as we

  437. consider the rest

  438. of the text.

  439. First,

  440. found in the

  441. last half of

  442. verse 15,

  443. we can see

  444. the scripture

  445. is the power

  446. for salvation.

  447. As Paul say,

  448. familiar with

  449. these sacred

  450. writings which

  451. are able to

  452. make you wise

  453. for salvation

  454. through faith

  455. in Jesus

  456. Christ.

  457. Our children

  458. are currently

  459. forming a

  460. worldview,

  461. an understanding,

  462. a base on

  463. which to build

  464. an understanding

  465. of the world,

  466. a lens through

  467. which they will

  468. interpret the

  469. world around

  470. them and

  471. their place

  472. in it.

  473. We ought to

  474. work to build

  475. for them a

  476. biblical worldview

  477. for the glory

  478. of God and

  479. for their good.

  480. The book of

  481. Proverbs juxtaposes

  482. the way of

  483. wisdom and

  484. the way of

  485. folly.

  486. And what is the

  487. beginning of

  488. wisdom?

  489. Fear of the

  490. Lord.

  491. It's understanding

  492. rightly Him as

  493. creator, God,

  494. and us as

  495. creation.

  496. This is why

  497. this is stated.

  498. Having a

  499. proper worldview

  500. lends us

  501. toward wisdom.

  502. We want our

  503. children to walk

  504. in the way

  505. of wisdom.

  506. Proverbs 2.6

  507. says,

  508. For the Lord

  509. gives wisdom.

  510. From His mouth

  511. come knowledge

  512. and understanding.

  513. And what is the

  514. Bible?

  515. But the very

  516. words of God.

  517. Paul tells

  518. Timothy that the

  519. Scriptures are

  520. able to make

  521. you wise.

  522. Here in

  523. verse 15,

  524. specifically for

  525. salvation through

  526. faith in Christ

  527. Jesus.

  528. It is the

  529. Scripture that

  530. tells us the

  531. story of the

  532. world in which

  533. we live.

  534. Our children

  535. need to

  536. understand that

  537. we have a

  538. creator God

  539. who made all

  540. things, who

  541. spoke it by

  542. His power out

  543. of nothing.

  544. We weren't

  545. and then we

  546. were.

  547. And then He

  548. ordered it

  549. under His

  550. good rule.

  551. He gave

  552. very simple

  553. instruction.

  554. Things to do

  555. and things to

  556. not do.

  557. And Adam and

  558. Eve were meant

  559. to live in this

  560. world and to

  561. go forth and

  562. to multiply and

  563. live under the

  564. good rule of

  565. God forever.

  566. But it didn't

  567. last for very

  568. long.

  569. One of my

  570. post-glory

  571. questions will

  572. be how much

  573. time actually

  574. passed from

  575. Genesis 1-1 to

  576. the beginning of

  577. chapter 3.

  578. Was it only a

  579. couple days?

  580. I want to hope

  581. they did a little

  582. better than that

  583. in the garden.

  584. But it doesn't

  585. take long in the

  586. biblical narrative.

  587. For Adam and

  588. Eve to do the

  589. very thing they

  590. were commanded

  591. not to do,

  592. to say to God

  593. that they wanted

  594. to be like God,

  595. they rebelled

  596. against Him,

  597. they became His

  598. enemies.

  599. And He justly

  600. and rightly

  601. punished them

  602. for it.

  603. Our children

  604. need to understand

  605. that they live

  606. in that fallen

  607. world.

  608. That they have

  609. inherited the

  610. sin nature of

  611. Adam.

  612. That they are

  613. guilty before God.

  614. That they are

  615. rebels before

  616. Him.

  617. If you have

  618. held children

  619. for very long,

  620. you know.

  621. I've seen people

  622. walk out of this

  623. room already this

  624. morning that are

  625. going,

  626. sin.

  627. Voddie

  628. Baccham has

  629. famously said,

  630. a contemporary

  631. pastor has

  632. famously said,

  633. do you know

  634. why children

  635. are so small

  636. when they're

  637. born?

  638. And people

  639. go, you

  640. know, why?

  641. He said,

  642. because if they

  643. weren't, they

  644. would kill you.

  645. The first time

  646. you didn't give

  647. them something

  648. that they wanted,

  649. seen the rage

  650. of a baby.

  651. And thankfully

  652. they're so cute,

  653. so we don't

  654. want to do the

  655. same.

  656. They're broken.

  657. Right?

  658. My children

  659. are broken.

  660. They're enemies

  661. of God.

  662. They need

  663. reconciliation to

  664. our Creator,

  665. God, because

  666. it's good for

  667. them.

  668. It's loving

  669. kind that God

  670. would even give

  671. them a way to

  672. be restored to

  673. Him.

  674. So they need to

  675. understand redemption.

  676. We don't always

  677. use these types of

  678. words with our

  679. children.

  680. They need to

  681. understand that in

  682. order for them to

  683. be accepted by

  684. God, all of the

  685. penalty for their

  686. sin needed to be

  687. erased.

  688. It needs to be

  689. stricken from the

  690. record.

  691. But beloved, they

  692. also need to

  693. understand that

  694. that's not enough.

  695. That's not a full

  696. presentation of the

  697. gospel of Jesus

  698. Christ.

  699. Just to say that

  700. the record was

  701. canceled is not

  702. enough.

  703. That only brings

  704. them to neutral

  705. with God.

  706. God requires that

  707. we not be His

  708. enemy, but He also

  709. requires that we be

  710. obedient to His

  711. command, that we

  712. show ourselves to

  713. belong to Him.

  714. We cannot do

  715. this because of

  716. our nature.

  717. And so we need

  718. the perfect nature

  719. of Christ.

  720. Our children need

  721. to understand that

  722. we are found

  723. righteous in

  724. Jesus.

  725. That His

  726. righteousness is

  727. imputed to us.

  728. It's given to us.

  729. There's a great

  730. exchange that

  731. happened on the

  732. cross as Jesus

  733. hung for the sins

  734. of the world.

  735. There was a trade

  736. that happened.

  737. We gave Him our

  738. guilt.

  739. He gave us His

  740. righteousness.

  741. And therefore, we're

  742. justified before God.

  743. We're counted as

  744. righteous.

  745. No longer guilty, but

  746. being perfect law

  747. keepers because Jesus

  748. kept the law

  749. perfectly.

  750. Our children need to

  751. understand this.

  752. And oh, what a work

  753. it is to help them

  754. understand this.

  755. I have tried every

  756. imaginable way to

  757. explain this to my

  758. children.

  759. I'm going to

  760. continue to do

  761. that very thing.

  762. To plead with them

  763. to understand not

  764. only the person, but

  765. also the work of

  766. Jesus Christ.

  767. What it accomplished

  768. for us.

  769. And our children need

  770. to have their minds

  771. drawn to to be

  772. enthralled by the

  773. final restoration

  774. that will one day

  775. take place.

  776. Christ will return

  777. and He will judge

  778. the world and He

  779. will set all things

  780. straight.

  781. We want to aim our

  782. children to that

  783. bigger and higher

  784. reality.

  785. Yes, the world lives

  786. in a cursed and

  787. broken state, but one

  788. day God's going to

  789. make it all new

  790. again.

  791. Our children need

  792. this worldview to

  793. fit everything else

  794. that they're going to

  795. learn into creation,

  796. fall, redemption,

  797. restoration.

  798. And these things are

  799. important for us to

  800. understand rightly.

  801. You ask many people

  802. in the church today,

  803. what is the gospel?

  804. And you will get a

  805. varied and wide

  806. range of answers.

  807. And many of those

  808. answers will be

  809. partly right,

  810. sometimes they'll just

  811. be totally wrong,

  812. but mostly partly

  813. right, but

  814. incomplete.

  815. Full biblical

  816. narrative answer

  817. to that question.

  818. Creation, fall,

  819. redemption,

  820. restoration.

  821. And allow me to

  822. caution you at this

  823. point to not jump

  824. at the first

  825. opportunity your

  826. child offers to

  827. lead them to

  828. faith in Christ.

  829. When you present

  830. the gospel in some

  831. form or fashion,

  832. it kind of makes

  833. sense.

  834. When you say to a

  835. young person,

  836. heaven is a great

  837. place and hell is a

  838. horrible place.

  839. And here's a thing

  840. you should do to

  841. have the one and

  842. not the other.

  843. They're not dumb.

  844. It's not a

  845. complicated choice

  846. to make.

  847. We want to be so

  848. careful that we

  849. don't give our

  850. children false

  851. assurance.

  852. Be so careful that

  853. they actually are

  854. placing believing

  855. faith in Jesus

  856. Christ.

  857. We also don't want

  858. to overcomplicate

  859. that.

  860. But we should be

  861. exercising some

  862. caution.

  863. Many, as I

  864. mentioned, churches

  865. are all about

  866. child evangelism.

  867. Every year I get

  868. tons of promotions

  869. from our denomination

  870. to put on vacation

  871. Bible schools,

  872. to do them super

  873. well.

  874. This will be the

  875. chance.

  876. This is the

  877. opportunity.

  878. This is the...

  879. And a couple of

  880. years ago I got a

  881. stat as an enforcer

  882. to that which said

  883. children are 70%

  884. more likely to

  885. respond to a gospel

  886. invitation before

  887. they turn eight.

  888. This was the

  889. promotion for this.

  890. And I wouldn't

  891. throw statistics out

  892. the window altogether,

  893. right?

  894. But this was the

  895. reason they were

  896. saying we should do

  897. this work because

  898. they're 70% more

  899. likely to respond to

  900. a gospel invitation

  901. before they turn

  902. eight.

  903. You know what else

  904. happens on average

  905. at the age of eight?

  906. Children stop believing

  907. in a particular

  908. jolly elf that

  909. comes down a

  910. chimney and fills

  911. stockings at the

  912. same time.

  913. So at the age of

  914. eight children become

  915. less gullible.

  916. And we want to be

  917. careful that we're

  918. not preying upon

  919. that.

  920. Is it possible for a

  921. child to come to

  922. faith before eight?

  923. Sure.

  924. But we just want to

  925. be very, very careful

  926. in the process of

  927. sharing the good

  928. news with children.

  929. The call of the

  930. gospel is repent

  931. and believe, not

  932. repeat after me.

  933. It's repent and

  934. believe.

  935. Our church has

  936. unapologetically

  937. reformed soteriology,

  938. which means if our

  939. children are to be

  940. saved, they will be

  941. saved by God's

  942. grace alone.

  943. Sola gratia.

  944. This is good news

  945. for parents.

  946. This is really good

  947. news for parents who

  948. want their children to

  949. make professions of

  950. faith that persist,

  951. to make real

  952. professions of faith

  953. that persist to the

  954. end, that God is

  955. in control.

  956. Thomas Watson, a

  957. Puritan, once said,

  958. this is on your

  959. bulletin if you

  960. happen to have one,

  961. God's decree is the

  962. very pillar and

  963. basis on which the

  964. saints' perseverance

  965. depends.

  966. That decree ties the

  967. knot of adoption so

  968. fast that neither sin,

  969. death, nor hell can

  970. break it asunder.

  971. That said, God uses

  972. and has always used

  973. means to accomplish

  974. his saving purposes.

  975. So, moms and dads, we

  976. want to faithfully

  977. teach the gospel to

  978. our children that

  979. they might believe.

  980. A number of years

  981. ago, I went to a

  982. large conference called

  983. Together for the

  984. Gospel.

  985. It's in Louisville,

  986. Kentucky, every other

  987. year.

  988. And there were some

  989. 10,000 church leaders

  990. and seminarians from

  991. Southern Seminary

  992. there.

  993. Rather a large

  994. crowd.

  995. And it's kind of a

  996. warm-up thing to the

  997. conference.

  998. A pastor named Mark

  999. Dever got up and was

  1000. just asking questions

  1001. about how people had

  1002. come to faith in

  1003. Christ.

1004. So they were having us

  1005. stand when he said,

1006. how was it that you

  1007. came to faith in

  1008. Christ?

  1009. And he had gone

  1010. through a couple of

  1011. options.

  1012. And then he said,

1013. how many of you came

  1014. to faith in Christ

  1015. because your parents

  1016. taught the gospel to

  1017. you in your homes?

  1018. And if you've ever

  1019. been in a stadium

  1020. where it's quiet and

  1021. everybody stands and

  1022. the chairs flip up

  1023. because you're all

  1024. packed in way,

  1025. way too tight,

  1026. it was almost

  1027. deafening the amount

  1028. of those people who

  1029. stood.

1030. It was 85% of that

  1031. group.

  1032. And their parents

  1033. were used of God

  1034. to share the gospel

  1035. with them and God

  1036. saved them.

  1037. So we play an

  1038. incredibly important

  1039. part in this.

  1040. It's not dependent

  1041. upon us,

  1042. but we're used as a

  1043. tool in the mighty

1044. hands of God to see

  1045. our children come to

  1046. faith.

1047. And so we should do

  1048. it all the more

  1049. and all the more

  1050. confidently because

  1051. of this reality.

  1052. We should be like

  1053. Paul in Romans

    Romans 1:16

  1054. chapter 1,

  1055. verse 16,

  1056. where he said,

1057. for I am not ashamed

  1058. of the gospel,

1059. for it is the power

  1060. of God for salvation

  1061. to everyone who

  1062. believes,

  1063. to the Jew first

  1064. and also to the

  1065. Greek.

  1066. Right?

  1067. We would see our

  1068. children come to

  1069. faith in Christ.

  1070. So Paul exhorts

  1071. Timothy.

  1072. Continue in what

  1073. you have learned.

  1074. Don't be like those

  1075. men who have

  1076. abandoned the faith.

  1077. Continue in what

  1078. you have learned

  1079. and firmly believe

  1080. knowing from whom

  1081. you learned it

  1082. and from childhood

  1083. you were acquainted

  1084. with the sacred

  1085. writings,

  1086. which are able to

  1087. make you wise

  1088. for salvation

  1089. through faith

  1090. in Christ Jesus.

  1091. Scripture is also

  1092. powerful for

  1093. sanctification.

  1094. Verse 16 and 17

  1095. teaches us this,

  1096. that Scripture

  1097. is breathed out.

  1098. God is its very

  1099. source.

  1100. And because of

  1101. that, it is

  1102. sufficient.

  1103. It's profitable

  1104. for teaching,

  1105. reproof, correction,

  1106. and training

  1107. in righteousness.

1108. And then in verse 17

  1109. Paul says that the

  1110. man of God

  1111. may be complete,

  1112. equipped for

  1113. every good

  1114. work.

  1115. It is what we

  1116. need to be

  1117. trained in

  1118. godliness.

  1119. Our labor as

  1120. parents is to

  1121. raise men and

  1122. women, not

  1123. merely boys

  1124. and girls.

  1125. We want to

  1126. think with the

  1127. end in mind.

  1128. And we should

  1129. want our children

  1130. to grow up

  1131. to be children

  1132. who honor the

  1133. Lord with all

  1134. that they feel

  1135. and all that

  1136. they do

  1137. and all that

  1138. they say.

  1139. Our children

  1140. will seek

  1141. instruction.

  1142. If you are not

  1143. instructing them,

  1144. they will find

  1145. some path to

  1146. follow.

  1147. They are going

  1148. to find it

  1149. on TV.

  1150. They are going

  1151. to find it

  1152. with their

  1153. friends.

  1154. Eventually,

  1155. someday,

  1156. they will find

  1157. it in the

  1158. philosophies of

  1159. their school.

  1160. As adults,

  1161. they will continue

  1162. to do this

  1163. very thing

  1164. if they have

  1165. not been

  1166. given

  1167. faithful

  1168. instruction,

  1169. faithful grounding

  1170. in the

  1171. Scripture.

  1172. This is why

  1173. the Oprahs

  1174. and the Dr.

  1175. Phills and

  1176. the Tony Robinsons

  1177. of the world

  1178. are so very

  1179. popular.

  1180. People are

  1181. saying we

  1182. need instruction.

  1183. We need

  1184. help for how

  1185. to walk

  1186. in the

  1187. world.

  1188. But only

  1189. the Bible

  1190. is competent

  1191. to this

  1192. task.

  1193. Only the

  1194. Bible is

  1195. competent to

  1196. the task

  1197. of training

  1198. our children

  1199. in faith

  1200. and godliness.

  1201. And it

  1202. is sufficient

  1203. for this

  1204. task.

  1205. It contains

  1206. within it

  1207. everything we

  1208. need to

  1209. know.

  1210. Any other

  1211. good books

  1212. that we

  1213. promote,

  1214. there's a

  1215. couple of

  1216. wonderful

  1217. books out

  1218. in the

  1219. book note

  1220. on mothering

  1221. and on

  1222. fathering,

  1223. are just

  1224. aiming us

  1225. at the

  1226. Scripture.

  1227. They're just

  1228. helping us

  1229. to understand

  1230. what the

  1231. Scripture

  1232. teaches

  1233. about this

  1234. topic

  1235. or any

  1236. other.

  1237. Moms

  1238. and dads,

  1239. we must

  1240. be faithful

  1241. students of

  1242. the Bible

  1243. ourselves,

  1244. that we

  1245. might be

  1246. faithful

  1247. teachers

  1248. of the

  1249. Bible

  1250. for the

  1251. sake of

  1252. our

  1253. children.

  1254. And that

  1255. doesn't have

  1256. to be an

  1257. overwhelming

  1258. task for you.

  1259. That can

  1260. simply start

  1261. today.

  1262. Open up

  1263. the Scripture

  1264. and learn

  1265. something from

  1266. it and

  1267. then turn

  1268. and impart

  1269. what you're

  1270. learning to

  1271. your children.

  1272. Try to

  1273. speak it in

  1274. the simplest

  1275. possible terms

  1276. you can

  1277. without diluting

  1278. it as truth

  1279. at all.

  1280. I still fly so

  1281. high for my

  1282. kids sometimes

  1283. and then I

  1284. think,

  1285. can I say

  1286. this any

  1287. simpler?

  1288. I don't

  1289. know that I

  1290. can try to

  1291. explain the

  1292. Trinity to

  1293. anybody but

  1294. much less a

  1295. five or six

  1296. year old.

  1297. You can

  1298. only make

  1299. it so

  1300. simple.

  1301. So our

  1302. children and

  1303. we need

  1304. the Scripture

  1305. to lead us

  1306. to the

  1307. gospel for

  1308. our salvation

  1309. and for

  1310. our

  1311. sanctification.

  1312. So I want

  1313. to close with

  1314. an encouragement

  1315. to you from

  1316. history.

  1317. I'll commend

  1318. this book.

  1319. It's called

  1320. Devoted.

  1321. It's by a

  1322. man named

  1323. Tim Challey.

  1324. The subtitle is

  1325. Great Men

  1326. and Their

  1327. Godly Moms.

  1328. It's got a lot

  1329. of really neat

  1330. examples of the

  1331. way men

  1332. throughout church

  1333. history were

  1334. served faithfully

  1335. by their

  1336. mothers,

  1337. moms especially.

  1338. This would be

  1339. a great one

  1340. to pick up

  1341. and to read.

  1342. Husbands,

  1343. you could order

  1344. on Amazon

  1345. right now

  1346. for your

  1347. wives.

  1348. I think it

  1349. would be

  1350. good for

  1351. their souls.

  1352. I want to

  1353. tell you a

  1354. little bit

  1355. about a

  1356. man named

  1357. John Gresham

  1358. Machen.

  1359. Late

  1360. 19th century,

  1361. early 20th

  1362. century Christian.

  1363. Became a

  1364. Christian rather

  1365. young in his

  1366. home.

  1367. His mother

  1368. faithfully

  1369. worked with

  1370. him and

  1371. taught him

  1372. the scripture

  1373. as well as

  1374. his father,

  1375. but this book

  1376. is not about

  1377. the fathers

  1378. of these

  1379. men.

  1380. His mother's

  1381. name was

  1382. Mary,

  1383. but went by

  1384. the name

  1385. Minnie.

  1386. I don't know

  1387. why,

  1388. but this book

  1389. tells us that

  1390. she did and

  1391. refers to her

  1392. as such.

  1393. And Gresham

  1394. Machen was

  1395. tempted by

  1396. the liberal

  1397. theology of

  1398. his day.

  1399. He had gone

  1400. away to school

  1401. where he

  1402. encountered

  1403. liberal

  1404. theologians

  1405. who were

  1406. whimsical,

  1407. who were

  1408. kind to

  1409. him,

  1410. and he

  1411. was tempted

  1412. to begin

  1413. to forsake

  1414. the inerrancy

  1415. and the

  1416. authority of

  1417. the scripture.

  1418. And his

  1419. mother was

  1420. aware of

  1421. this.

  1422. He had

  1423. shared this

  1424. with her

  1425. and was

  1426. talking out

  1427. these things

  1428. with her,

  1429. and I'll

  1430. pick up

  1431. reading at

  1432. this point.

  1433. Minnie

  1434. wrestled

  1435. with

  1436. growing

  1437. anxiety

  1438. over

  1439. her

  1440. son's

  1441. doubts.

  1442. But because

  1443. she was

  1444. rooted in

  1445. scripture,

  1446. she knew

  1447. better than

  1448. to panic

  1449. and confront

  1450. her son

  1451. in fear

  1452. or anger.

  1453. Relying

  1454. instead on

  1455. the grace

  1456. of God,

  1457. she chose

  1458. to provide

  1459. him with

  1460. comfort

  1461. and steadfast

  1462. love.

  1463. She wrote

  1464. to him,

  1465. quote,

  1466. But one

  1467. thing I

  1468. can assure

  1469. you of,

  1470. that nothing

  1471. that you

  1472. could do

  1473. could keep

  1474. me from

  1475. loving you.

  1476. Nothing.

  1477. It is easy

  1478. enough to

  1479. grieve me.

  1480. Perhaps I

  1481. worry too

  1482. much,

  1483. but my

  1484. love for

  1485. my boy

  1486. is absolutely

  1487. indestructible.

  1488. Rely

  1489. on whatever

  1490. comes.

  1491. I'm sorry,

  1492. rely on that

  1493. whatever comes.

  1494. And I have

  1495. faith in you

  1496. too and believe

  1497. that the strength

  1498. will come to

  1499. you for your

  1500. work,

  1501. whatever it

  1502. may be.

  1503. And that

  1504. the way

  1505. will be

  1506. opened.

  1507. Pulled back

  1508. by his

  1509. mother's

  1510. love,

  1511. along with

  1512. the counsel

  1513. of other

  1514. godly

  1515. mentors,

  1516. Gresham's

  1517. crisis was

  1518. soon quelled

  1519. and he

  1520. returned to

  1521. the sound

  1522. doctrine in

  1523. which he

  1524. was raised

  1525. in the

  1526. Presbyterian

  1527. Church.

  1528. One of

  1529. Gresham's

  1530. biographers

  1531. would write,

  1532. No one

  1533. ever seriously

  1534. rivaled his

  1535. mother in

  1536. her capacity

  1537. to satisfy

  1538. his need

  1539. of deep

  1540. spiritual

  1541. sympathy or

  1542. in her

  1543. hold upon

  1544. his affection

  1545. and admiration.

  1546. With God's

  1547. help,

  1548. the combination

  1549. of training

  1550. and tenderness

  1551. won her son

  1552. back to his

  1553. roots.

  1554. He soon

  1555. took up a

  1556. position at

  1557. Princeton teaching

  1558. New Testament

  1559. and became

  1560. well-liked and

  1561. highly respected

  1562. among both

  1563. faculty and

  1564. students.

  1565. This is a

  1566. long time ago

  1567. Princeton.

  1568. Non-liberal

  1569. Princeton.

  1570. He would

  1571. teach at

  1572. Princeton until

  1573. 1926,

  1574. though his

  1575. time there

  1576. would be

  1577. interrupted by

  1578. overseas service

  1579. during the

  1580. First World

  1581. War,

  1582. but liberalism

  1583. would continue

  1584. its ascendancy,

  1585. forcing him

  1586. to take

  1587. action.

  1588. In 1929,

  1589. he would

  1590. take the

  1591. lead in

  1592. founding

  1593. Westminster

  1594. Theological

  1595. Seminary,

  1596. and in

  1597. 1936,

  1598. a new

  1599. denomination,

  1600. the Orthodox

  1601. Presbyterian

  1602. Church.

  1603. Because Gresham

  1604. was a lifelong

  1605. bachelor,

  1606. his mother

  1607. would remain

  1608. the closest

  1609. woman in

  1610. his life

  1611. until her

  1612. death in

  1613. 1931.

  1614. This was the

  1615. most grievous

  1616. event he had

  1617. experienced,

  1618. for no one

  1619. had held

  1620. him in

  1621. greater

  1622. esteem

  1623. than his

  1624. mother.

  1625. No one

  1626. had been

  1627. so unswervingly

  1628. loyal to

  1629. him.

  1630. Perhaps no

  1631. one had been

  1632. so impacted

  1633. by him.

  1634. She once

  1635. wrote to

  1636. him,

  1637. I cannot

  1638. half express

  1639. to you my

  1640. pride and

  1641. profound joy

  1642. in your

  1643. work.

  1644. You have

  1645. handled in

  1646. a very able

  1647. manner the

  1648. most important

  1649. problem of

  1650. the age,

  1651. and you

  1652. have given

  1653. voice to

  1654. my own

  1655. sentiments

  1656. far better

  1657. than I

  1658. could

  1659. myself.

  1660. On the

  1661. day the

  1662. family laid

  1663. her to

  1664. rest,

  1665. Gresham

  1666. wrote,

  1667. My mother

  1668. seems,

  1669. to me at

  1670. least,

  1671. to have

  1672. been the

  1673. wisest and

  1674. best human

  1675. being I

  1676. ever knew.

  1677. May we

  1678. be a church

  1679. that produces

  1680. faithful mothers

  1681. and fathers

  1682. who will

  1683. impart with

  1684. great charity

  1685. and patience

  1686. the wisdom

  1687. of God

  1688. to their

  1689. children.

  1690. Let's pray.
