  1. This morning, we're taking a one week break from our exposition of the book of Hebrews to begin what we purpose to make a periodically presented series on the gospel and counseling.

  2. !

  3. We have much opportunity as a church of the living God to make him known in the world through the careful application of the gospel to the daily struggles of this life.

  4. Beloved, we have chance to walk through the world differently than others, that we might be able to speak to them of the hope that we have.

  5. This, of course, does not preclude gospel proclamation, but it should accompany it.

  6. It should give us a platform from which to speak the gospel truth.

  7. So today's sermon, as I very rarely do, but is entitled The Gospel and Your Sorrow.

  8. Each of us have and will experience sorrow in some measure in this life.

  9. Some of us have a greater propensity toward it than others, but it is inevitable that fallen people living in a fallen world will, from time to time,

  10. feel the weightiness of the reality in which we live.

  11. I hope two things for our time together this morning.

  12. First, that you will have a clear understanding of your personal sorrow and be better equipped to battle for your joy.

  13. I recognize that some of you might be feeling sorrowful even this morning.

  14. Some of you may not.

  15. If you are feeling sorrowful this morning, I hope this will be an aid to you.

  16. If you're not, I hope it will be a future aid to you.

  17. Secondly, that you will have a clear understanding of another's sorrow and be better equipped to battle for their joy.

  18. This is why the title of the gospel and your sorrow is applicable in either case, whether you're experiencing sorrow or someone else is experiencing sorrow.

  19. Beloved, we are instructed to love one another.

  20. And Paul tells us in Galatians chapter six and verse two, that if we love one another, we will bear one another's burdens.

  21. And in Romans chapter 12 and verse 15, we're instructed to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  22. Now, I know that I could fake rejoicing.

  23. I think it's possible that I could put on the outward expression of rejoicing, although I don't think this is what Paul is instructing us to.

  24. But I can tell you this, that for me to weep with someone who is weeping means that I am going to experience their sorrow.

  25. I'm going to make their sorrow my sorrow because we are members of one another.

  26. We are to take on the joy of others and we are to take on the sorrow of others.

  27. If you are in relationship with other people and you are in any way modeling Christ likeness, you are going to be asked to give advice.

  28. People are going to ask you for help.

  29. They're asking you for counsel.

  30. You should aim to give biblical answers to spiritual problems.

  31. As a culture, we are a psychologized culture.

  32. We have lots of influence around us telling us the way that we should go.

  33. And too often when confronted with spiritual problems, we are quick to give the world's answers.

  34. Out of a genuine desire to be helpful, we are quick to give answers that are not ultimately and finally helpful at all.

  35. So we need to know how to give good counsel.

  36. Whether you consider yourself a counselor or not, you will give counsel in your life.

  37. So we are going to look this morning at Psalm 77.

  38. This is a psalm of Asaph, a songwriter.

  39. Some of my favorite psalms are psalms of Asaph.

  40. You will find within this psalm the Hebrew phrase, Salah.

  41. And we don't know exactly what this means.

  42. It's widely understood to be some kind of musical direction.

  43. Most agree it's probably meant to be a pause, an interlude.

  44. So imagine the lyre and the harp playing for a bit in that gap.

  45. And I'm telling you this simply to say I'm going to pause for a moment when you see that word.

  46. Before I begin reading in verse 1, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  47. It was written for his glory and our good.

  48. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  49. I cry aloud to God, aloud to God, and he will hear me.

  50. In the day of my trouble, I seek the Lord.

  51. In the night, my hand is stretched out without wearying.

  52. My soul refuses to be comforted.

  53. When I remember God, I moan.

  54. When I meditate, my spirit faints.

  55. You hold my eyelids open.

  56. I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

  57. I consider the days of old, the years long ago.

  58. I said, let me remember my song in the night.

  59. Let me meditate in my heart.

  60. Then my spirit made a diligent search.

  61. Will the Lord spurn forever and never again be favorable?

  62. Has his steadfast love forever ceased?

  63. Are his promises at an end for all time?

  64. Has God forgotten to be gracious?

  65. Has he in anger shut up his compassion?

  66. Then I said, I will appeal to this, to the years of the right hand of the Most High.

  67. I will remember the deeds of the Lord.

  68. Yes, I will remember your wonders of old.

  69. I will ponder all your work and meditate on your mighty deeds.

  70. Your way, O God, is holy.

  71. What God is great like our God?

  72. You are the God who works wonders.

  73. You have made known your might among the peoples.

  74. You, with your arm, redeemed your people, the children of Jacob and Joseph.

  75. When the waters saw you, O God.

  76. When the waters saw you, they were afraid.

  77. Indeed, the deep trembled.

  78. The clouds poured out water.

  79. The skies gave forth thunder.

  80. Your arrows flashed on every side.

  81. The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind.

  82. Your lightnings lighted up the world.

  83. The earth trembled and shook.

  84. Your way was through the sea.

  85. Your path through the great waters.

  86. Yet your footprints were unseen.

  87. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

  88. I would like to begin our study this morning

  89. by helping you see the commonality of sorrow

  90. in the life of our culture and of our church.

  91. I will tell you this morning,

  92. I personally struggle most with sorrow.

  93. This is the emotion I struggle most with.

  94. For some, they may be inclined to struggles with anxiety

  95. or struggles with anger.

  96. But for me, my greatest emotional struggle

  97. is with sorrow or depression.

  98. I emotionally find myself very often fighting for joy.

  99. Sorrow just seems to creep up on me.

  100. And I suddenly find myself feeling bummed out

  101. for no particular reason whatsoever.

  102. And I have to fight for joy.

  103. I think because of my great desire

  104. to see the proverbial glass filled to the very brim.

  105. I think I have a glass.

  106. Yep, I do have a glass.

  107. Unplanned illustration, right?

  108. I so want to see the glass filled to the brim,

  109. overflowing,

  110. that I focus far too much on the empty space.

  111. This glass is not half empty,

  112. but you get the point.

  113. And I neglect altogether

  114. all of the liquid in the glass.

  115. Just ignore the filled portion altogether.

  116. I'm very concerned about the space

  117. that exists in that spot.

  118. I think as I desire to see the kingdom of God

  119. come to pass in the world,

  120. I particularly feel the tensions

  121. of why we're not in that place.

  122. The weight of sin bears on me heavy.

  123. I am not alone in this.

  124. Depression is the single topic

  125. I give the most counsel for.

  126. Sometimes people don't know

  127. that's what they're coming to me for counsel for,

  128. but we find that they're finding themselves

  129. in a particular place of sorrow.

  130. Antidepressants, as a category of medication,

  131. are the number one prescribed medication in America.

  132. And I'm not currently commenting on the medication itself.

  133. I may not have time to this morning,

  134. but merely the rampancy of sorrow in our country.

  135. So many people who are seeking help

  136. because they are sad.

  137. Many of our church heroes struggled

  138. with what they most often called melancholy.

  139. As you read around,

  140. it's a deep sorrow.

  141. It's a besetting sorrow.

  142. It's what we would commonly call depression in our day.

  143. From Luther to Calvin to Spurgeon.

  144. Spurgeon once wrote,

  145. the mind can descend far lower than the body,

  146. for in it there are bottomless pits.

  147. The flesh can bear only a certain number of wounds

  148. and no more.

  149. But the soul can bleed in 10,000 ways

  150. and die over and over again each hour.

  151. And he was a man that experienced great anguish

  152. for reasons explained and for unexplained reasons.

  153. Sorrow is more common than I think

  154. that we would like to admit.

  155. We've become very accustomed

  156. to put on our Sunday best

  157. and deal with each other

  158. in a way that I like to call plastic.

  159. Fake.

  160. Because we feel a pressure to do so.

  161. I'm really grateful that many of you now

  162. on a Sunday morning,

  163. when I say,

  164. how are you doing?

  165. You'll say,

  166. not that great.

  167. And of course my impulse

  168. is that I want to help you.

  169. And so in the past,

  170. I haven't felt convenienced by that

  171. because I don't have time

  172. in that moment to help you.

  173. But I'm so glad for the honesty.

  174. And now if you ever say that to me,

  175. I'll say,

  176. well I am really glad you're here.

  177. Good place for you to be

  178. when you're not doing that great.

  179. And I'll be sure to follow up with you

  180. later.

  181. As a church maturing,

  182. right,

  183. growing up as a church,

  184. we noticed across time

  185. that our gatherings

  186. did not leave much space

  187. for sorrow.

  188. I particularly noted this

  189. when some members of our church

  190. lost an in utero baby,

  191. still born.

  192. And I preached the funeral

  193. of that baby.

  194. And I thought,

  195. how do I give comfort

  196. the following day?

  197. That Sunday morning.

  198. Will they come

  199. and will they join us?

  200. And will everything

  201. just be cheery and happy?

  202. Or will they feel like

  203. they've got a spot

  204. that we could grieve together

  205. through that process?

  206. And I think in many ways

  207. we've been working

  208. to rectify that.

  209. Some of that is expressed

  210. in the way we pray.

  211. Much of it is expressed

  212. in the songs

  213. that we sing.

  214. We should be very thankful

  215. for old saints

  216. who wrote

  217. five verse hymns.

  218. If you only ever sing

  219. the first,

  220. the second,

  221. and the fifth,

  222. you miss the couple of verses

  223. that are about this life.

  224. And the trouble

  225. of this life.

  226. You begin to pay attention

  227. to many of the songs

  228. we sing.

  229. I know they begin

  230. to feel long,

  231. but it's expressing

  232. the totality

  233. of the Christian experience.

  234. Right?

  235. Being both called

  236. and justified

  237. and then sanctified

  238. growing up in Christ-likeness

  239. in this world

  240. and then finally

  241. fully glorified.

  242. But we still have work

  243. to do

  244. in this area.

  245. We will not be able

  246. to answer

  247. all of the possible

  248. questions

  249. that will arise

  250. this morning.

  251. There's just not enough

  252. time for it.

  253. But as we consider

  254. how to love each other

  255. well through sorrow,

  256. I hope

  257. that our study

  258. will at least

  259. get us started.

  260. We'll skip a stone

  261. off the surface

  262. that we might continue

  263. to study

  264. and learn

  265. together

  266. about what it means

  267. for us as a church

  268. to weep

  269. with those who weep.

  270. So my outline

  271. this morning

  272. is simple.

  273. It has three points.

  274. I'm going to give them

  275. to you before I begin

  276. speaking about the first one.

  277. Number one,

  278. the Bible

  279. affirms

  280. sorrow

  281. as normative.

  282. The Bible

  283. affirms

  284. sorrow

  285. as normative.

  286. Second,

  287. the Bible

  288. gives us

  289. language

  290. for our sorrow.

  291. The Bible

  292. gives us

  293. language

  294. for our sorrow.

  295. The glass

  296. is less full

  297. now.

  298. number three,

  299. the Bible

  300. gives us

  301. relief

  302. from our sorrow.

  303. Number one,

  304. the Bible

  305. affirms

  306. sorrow

  307. as normative.

  308. This morning

  309. we have

  310. opened before us

  311. a song

  312. of

  313. lament.

  314. In fact,

  315. over a third

  316. of the Bible's

  317. inspired songbook

  318. is made up

  319. of such psalms.

  320. Over a third

  321. of the psalms

  322. are psalms

  323. of

  324. lament.

  325. And,

  326. there's an entire book

  327. called the book

  328. of

  329. lamentations.

  330. In a new book

  331. I will come in to you

  332. by Mark

  333. Vrogop,

  334. I think I'm pronouncing

  335. that correct,

  336. entitled

  337. Dark Clouds

  338. Deep Mercy.

  339. He defines

  340. lament

  341. this way.

  342. Lament

  343. is the

  344. honest cry

  345. of a hurting

  346. heart

  347. wrestling

  348. with the

  349. paradox

  350. of pain

  351. and the

  352. promise

  353. of God's

  354. goodness.

  355. Lament

  356. is what

  357. we do

  358. with

  359. this gap

  360. that's

  361. experienced

  362. between

  363. what's going

  364. on in our

  365. lives when

  366. we're hurting

  367. and in the

  368. full and

  369. final promises

  370. of God

  371. to be good

  372. to his

  373. people.

  374. It's that

  375. stretching,

  376. it's that

  377. pulling

  378. in between.

  379. The

  380. biblical

  381. authors

  382. felt

  383. that

  384. gap

  385. between

  386. the

  387. way

  388. things

  389. were

  390. for

  391. them

  392. and

  393. the

  394. way

  395. they

  396. thought

  397. they

  398. ought

  399. to

  400. be.

  401. Our

  402. Lord

  403. and

  404. Savior

  405. is said

  406. to be

  407. a man

  408. of

  409. suffering

  410. and

  411. acquainted

  412. with

  413. grief,

  414. sorrow.

  415. In

  416. Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  417. chapter 53

  418. in verse

  419. 3.

  420. When

  421. Jesus

  422. sees

  423. the sorrow

  424. of

  425. Lazarus'

  426. sister

  427. at his

  428. passing,

  429. John

  430. 11

  431. 35

  432. tells us

  433. Jesus

  434. wept.

  435. He was

  436. not

  437. disconnected

  438. from

  439. that

  440. gap.

  441. If there

  442. was ever

  443. a man

  444. who could

  445. realize

  446. the good

  447. promises

  448. of God

  449. as he

  450. was the

  451. fulfillment

  452. of God's

  453. promises,

  454. it was

  455. Jesus.

  456. In the

  457. case of

  458. Lazarus,

  459. he knew

  460. full well

  461. that he

  462. was about

  463. to raise

  464. him

  465. from

  466. the

  467. dead,

  468. but he

  469. felt

  470. the pain

  471. of a

  472. world

  473. that is

  474. not

  475. as it

  476. should

  477. be.

  478. A world

  479. being

  480. restored,

  481. but not

  482. yet

  483. restored.

  484. Now we

  485. must be

  486. careful at

  487. this point

  488. because just

  489. because sorrow

  490. is shown

  491. as normative

  492. in the

  493. scripture

  494. does not

  495. make all

  496. sorrow

  497. okay.

  498. Some

  499. sorrow

  500. is

  501. sinful

  502. sorrow.

  503. Not all

  504. sorrow is

  505. sin,

  506. but it

  507. can be

  508. caused

  509. by sin,

  510. it can

  511. produce

  512. sin,

  513. and it

  514. itself

  515. can be

  516. sinful.

  517. It can

  518. be entirely

  519. devoid

  520. of faith.

  521. Sorrow

  522. can be

  523. caused

  524. by

  525. physical

  526. ailment.

  527. You may

  528. be

  529. hurt,

  530. being

  531. hurt

  532. is

  533. painful,

  534. and pain

  535. typically

  536. causes

  537. people to

  538. be sad.

  539. I don't

  540. know a lot

  541. of people

  542. with serious

  543. injury that

  544. are joyful

  545. over the

  546. injury

  547. itself.

  548. Some

  549. of you

  550. may deal

  551. with chronic

  552. and ongoing

  553. physical

  554. pain.

  555. You

  556. hurt in

  557. really deep

  558. ways,

  559. and it

  560. causes

  561. a sadness

  562. as a

  563. result.

  564. Sorrow

  565. can be

  566. caused

  567. by

  568. physical

  569. ailment

  570. of

  571. the

  572. mind.

  573. It would

  574. be silly

  575. for us

  576. to think

  577. that while

  578. our bodies

  579. are affected

  580. by

  581. the fall,

  582. that sin

  583. runs rampant

  584. in our

  585. flesh,

  586. I have

  587. type 1

  588. diabetes

  589. because

  590. of the

  591. fall

  592. of man,

  593. but that

  594. the gray

  595. matter

  596. encased

  597. in bone

  598. in our

  599. head

  600. wouldn't

  601. also be

  602. affected

  603. in some

  604. way

  605. by the

  606. fall.

  607. It's

  608. very

  609. difficult

  610. to

  611. understand

  612. these

  613. things

  614. because

  615. the mind

  616. is encased

  617. in bone.

  618. It's

  619. difficult

  620. to study

  621. the way

  622. other

  623. organs

  624. have been

  625. studied.

  626. But it's

  627. very possible

  628. for someone,

  629. probably this

  630. is over

  631. diagnosed,

  632. but to

  633. experience

  634. a physical

  635. ailment

  636. that

  637. tends

  638. them

  639. toward

  640. sadness.

  641. Sorrow

  642. can also

  643. be

  644. circumstantial.

  645. The loss

  646. of a

  647. loved

  648. one,

  649. diagnosis,

  650. the loss

  651. of a

  652. job,

  653. relationships

  654. that are

  655. severed,

  656. all kinds

  657. of reasons

  658. that in

  659. this world

  660. we will

  661. look out

  662. and feel

  663. sorrowful,

  664. look out

  665. at injustices

  666. in the

  667. world.

  668. Some of

  669. the psalms

  670. of lament,

  671. many of

  672. them are

  673. about that.

  674. Look at

  675. how others

  676. are doing.

  677. Psalm 73

  678. Asaph

  679. writes,

  680. how well

  681. the wicked

  682. are doing

  683. and look

  684. how poorly

  685. I'm doing.

  686. This seems

  687. unfair.

  688. And it

  689. causes him

  690. grief until

  691. he goes

  692. to the

  693. Lord.

  694. Sorrow

  695. can be

  696. circumstantial.

  697. Sorrow

  698. can be

  699. spiritual.

  700. Have that

  701. emotional

  702. root

  703. within us.

  704. Sadness

  705. that we

  706. can't quite

  707. put our

  708. finger

  709. on.

  710. And sorrow

  711. can and

  712. likely is

  713. a mixture

  714. of all

  715. three.

  716. And so as

  717. you're trying

  718. to sort

  719. out your

  720. own sadness

  721. or trying

  722. to help

  723. somebody else

  724. sort out

  725. theirs,

  726. it is one

  727. of the

  728. most

  729. complicated

  730. works

  731. to do.

  732. And if

  733. you've

  734. ever sat

  735. with somebody

  736. who is

  737. sorrowful,

  738. they don't

  739. tend to

  740. want to

  741. talk very

  742. much.

  743. It's a

  744. great

  745. challenge to

  746. help sort

  747. through the

  748. complexities

  749. of besetting

  750. sadness.

  751. sadness.

  752. Now because

  753. we tend

  754. to use

  755. the word

  756. depression

  757. and we

  758. use it

  759. fairly often

  760. in our

  761. day,

  762. I want to

  763. define

  764. depression

  765. and this

  766. is my

  767. definition

  768. of

  769. depression.

  770. I like to

  771. speak of

  772. depression in

  773. this way

  774. as

  775. disproportionate

  776. sorrow.

  777. sorrow.

  778. So if

  779. you were

  780. to lose

  781. a loved

  782. one,

  783. it is

  784. good for

  785. you to

  786. grieve that

  787. loss.

  788. It's

  789. proper for

  790. you to

  791. go through

  792. a process

  793. of being

  794. sad about

  795. someone you

  796. cared about

  797. being taken

  798. out of

  799. your life.

  800. But there's

  801. a point at

  802. which it's

  803. reasonable to

  804. be recovering

  805. from that

  806. sadness,

  807. to be moving

  808. on from

  809. that sadness.

  810. We enter

  811. into a

  812. depression when

  813. it becomes

  814. disproportionate.

  815. It's not

  816. in proper

  817. measure to

  818. the thing

  819. that has

  820. happened.

  821. It's

  822. irrational

  823. sorrow.

  824. And this

  825. is another

  826. great challenge

  827. of helping

  828. yourself and

  829. helping others.

  830. You don't

  831. really quite

  832. know why.

  833. It's hard

  834. to put my

  835. finger on

  836. why.

  837. Sam has

  838. learned how

  839. to very

  840. graciously love

  841. me as I'm

  842. sad at

  843. times.

  844. And more

  845. than I like

  846. to admit,

  847. I'll come

  848. home and

  849. I'm just

  850. sad.

  851. I have no

  852. real reason

  853. to be.

  854. I like

  855. coming home.

  856. I really

  857. enjoy my

  858. family.

  859. The weight

  860. of the day

  861. carries with

  862. me.

  863. I just

  864. say,

  865. are you

  866. okay?

  867. And I

  868. go,

  869. no,

  870. but I

  871. don't know

  872. why.

  873. And she's

  874. learned to

  875. give me a

  876. little bit

  877. of space

  878. because

  879. typically I

  880. can reason

  881. myself to

  882. why.

  883. Oh,

  884. I know

  885. why.

  886. I know

  887. why.

  888. And I

  889. know the

  890. promises of

  891. God that

  892. combat this

  893. sadness in

  894. me.

  895. And I

  896. can turn

  897. that sadness

  898. then by

  899. God's grace

  900. into joy.

  901. So,

  902. but again,

  903. not all

  904. sorrow is

  905. sin,

  906. but it

  907. can be

  908. caused by

  909. it,

  910. it can

  911. produce it,

  912. and it

  913. can be

  914. itself

  915. sinful,

  916. faithless,

  917. unwilling to

  918. think about

  919. the promises

  920. and believe

  921. the promises

  922. of God

  923. for us.

  924. Let me

  925. show you

  926. an example

  927. of what I

  928. mean by

  929. sinful sorrow

  930. before we

  931. proceed.

  932. So turn

  933. with me

  934. to Mark

  935. Psalm 77,

  936. turn with

  937. me to

  938. Genesis

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  939. chapter 4.

  940. This is a

  941. story you're

  942. probably familiar

  943. with,

  944. Cain and

  945. Abel,

  946. but likely

  947. have not

  948. seen it

  949. in this

  950. light.

  951. Beginning

  952. number 1,

  953. now Adam

  954. knew Eve

  955. his wife,

  956. and she

  957. conceived

  958. and bore

  959. Cain,

  960. saying,

  961. I have

  962. gotten a

  963. man with

  964. the help

  965. of the

  966. Lord.

  967. And again

  968. she bore

  969. his brother

  970. Abel.

  971. Now Abel

  972. was a

  973. keeper of

  974. sheep,

  975. and Cain

  976. a worker

  977. of the

  978. ground.

  979. In the

  980. course of

  981. time,

  982. Cain

  983. brought to

  984. the Lord

  985. an offering

  986. of the

  987. fruit of

  988. the ground.

  989. And Abel

  990. also brought

  991. of the

  992. firstborn

  993. of his

  994. flock,

  995. and of

  996. their fat

  997. portions.

  998. And the

  999. Lord had

  1000. regard for

  1001. Abel and

  1002. his offering,

  1003. but for

  1004. Cain and

  1005. his offering,

  1006. he had

  1007. no regard.

  1008. Now listen,

  1009. this is not

  1010. just an

  1011. unfair judgment

  1012. on God's

  1013. part.

  1014. Notice the

  1015. text gives

  1016. us some

  1017. very specifics

  1018. about what

  1019. Abel did.

  1020. He brought

  1021. the firstborn

  1022. and he brought

  1023. the fat

  1024. portions.

  1025. It was a

  1026. sacrificial

  1027. sacrifice.

  1028. He understood

  1029. the way

  1030. in which

  1031. he was

  1032. meant to

  1033. devote

  1034. his

  1035. trade

  1036. to

  1037. the

  1038. worship

  1039. of

  1040. God.

  1041. Notice

  1042. that Cain

  1043. just brought

  1044. to the

  1045. Lord

  1046. an offering

  1047. of the

  1048. fruit of

  1049. the ground.

  1050. It's just

  1051. an offering.

  1052. It's not

  1053. the firstborn

  1054. and the

  1055. fat

  1056. portions

  1057. as Abel's

  1058. won.

  1059. And we

  1060. know God

  1061. is good

  1062. and righteous

  1063. in his

  1064. judgment.

  1065. He has

  1066. no regard

  1067. for Cain's

  1068. offering.

  1069. It was

  1070. an

  1071. unacceptable

  1072. offering.

  1073. It wasn't

  1074. an appropriate

  1075. offering.

  1076. Cain had

  1077. not done

  1078. well in

  1079. regard to

  1080. his worship

  1081. to God.

  1082. And then

  1083. it says

  1084. what was

  1085. his response?

  1086. God not

  1087. regarding it,

  1088. not Lord,

  1089. how then

  1090. will you

  1091. regard my

  1092. offering?

  1093. I would

  1094. like to

  1095. please you

  1096. with my

  1097. offering.

  1098. Can you

  1099. help me?

  1100. Correct me

  1101. that I might

  1102. please you.

  1103. Instead,

  1104. what does

  1105. Cain do?

  1106. He was

  1107. very angry.

  1108. And his

  1109. face fell.

  1110. Which is a

  1111. common Hebrew

  1112. expression for

  1113. he was

  1114. deeply

  1115. saddened.

  1116. His face

  1117. fell.

  1118. So all of

  1119. that was

  1120. an unacceptable

  1121. emotional

  1122. response.

  1123. He did

  1124. not respond

  1125. righteously.

  1126. He responded

  1127. in sin.

  1128. Verse 6,

  1129. the Lord

  1130. said to

  1131. Cain,

  1132. God's

  1133. great kindness

  1134. to Cain,

  1135. Cain

  1136. angrily

  1137. shook his

  1138. fist at

  1139. the Lord

  1140. for not

  1141. accepting his

  1142. unacceptable

  1143. sacrifice.

  1144. The Lord

  1145. says to

  1146. Cain,

  1147. why are

  1148. you angry?

  1149. And why

  1150. has your

  1151. face

  1152. fallen?

  1153. If you

  1154. do well,

  1155. will you

  1156. not be

  1157. accepted?

  1158. If you

  1159. do well,

  1160. will you

  1161. not be

  1162. accepted?

  1163. And if

  1164. you do

  1165. not do

  1166. well,

  1167. sin is

  1168. crouching at

  1169. the door.

  1170. Its desire

  1171. is contrary

  1172. to you,

  1173. but you

  1174. must rule

  1175. over it.

  1176. So it

  1177. gives him

  1178. correction,

  1179. loving

  1180. correction.

  1181. What does

  1182. Cain do?

  1183. Cain spoke

  1184. to Abel,

  1185. his brother,

  1186. and when

  1187. they were

  1188. in the

  1189. field,

  1190. Cain rose

  1191. up against

  1192. his brother

  1193. Abel and

  1194. killed him.

  1195. An

  1196. unacceptable

  1197. physical

  1198. response.

  1199. You see

  1200. the downward

  1201. spiral that's

  1202. happening in

  1203. Cain's

  1204. life,

  1205. right?

  1206. Presents an

  1207. unacceptable

  1208. offering.

  1209. He has

  1210. an

  1211. unacceptable

  1212. emotional

  1213. response to

  1214. God not

  1215. receiving it.

  1216. God corrects

  1217. him,

  1218. and what

  1219. does he

  1220. do?

  1221. He goes

  1222. and commits

  1223. an unacceptable

  1224. physical

  1225. crime against

  1226. his brother.

  1227. Then the

  1228. Lord said

  1229. to Cain,

  1230. where is

  1231. Abel,

  1232. your brother?

  1233. And Cain

  1234. said,

  1235. I do not

  1236. know.

  1237. Am I

  1238. my brother's

  1239. keeper?

  1240. And the

  1241. spiral goes

  1242. deeper,

  1243. as now

  1244. he

  1245. unacceptably

  1246. responds to

  1247. God verbally

  1248. with a

  1249. lie.

  1250. And if you

  1251. read on in

  1252. the text,

  1253. he's judged

  1254. for this.

  1255. So this is

  1256. an example

  1257. of sorrow.

  1258. His face

  1259. falls.

  1260. Things didn't

  1261. go the way

  1262. he wanted

  1263. them to

  1264. go.

  1265. His face

  1266. falls,

  1267. and it

  1268. leads him

  1269. into

  1270. furthering

  1271. and furthering

  1272. sin.

  1273. sorrow.

  1274. Now in

  1275. our text,

  1276. we can

  1277. see

  1278. faithful

  1279. sorrow.

  1280. And catch

  1281. this very

  1282. carefully.

  1283. There is a

  1284. complaint.

  1285. I get

  1286. uncomfortable

  1287. when I

  1288. read Psalms

  1289. of Lament.

  1290. I think

  1291. you should

  1292. go,

  1293. whoa,

  1294. you're asking

  1295. these kinds

  1296. of questions?

  1297. But it's

  1298. really important

  1299. for us to

  1300. note that

  1301. Asaph

  1302. goes to

  1303. God.

  1304. He has a

  1305. complaint against

  1306. God.

  1307. He feels

  1308. as if

  1309. God is

  1310. not there,

  1311. but he

  1312. goes to

  1313. God in

  1314. faith.

  1315. That's what

  1316. he's going

  1317. to say.

  1318. I cry

  1319. aloud to

  1320. God,

  1321. aloud to

  1322. God,

  1323. and he

  1324. will hear

  1325. me.

  1326. He has

  1327. faith in

  1328. the fact

  1329. that God

  1330. will in

  1331. fact hear

  1332. his

  1333. complaint

  1334. against

  1335. him.

  1336. In the

  1337. day of

  1338. my trouble,

  1339. I seek

  1340. the Lord.

  1341. In the

  1342. night,

  1343. my hand

  1344. is stretched

  1345. out without

  1346. wearying.

  1347. What he's

  1348. saying is I'm

  1349. constantly,

  1350. I'm constantly

  1351. reaching out.

  1352. I'm constantly

  1353. trying to have

  1354. my complaint

  1355. heard by

  1356. God,

  1357. but my

  1358. soul

  1359. refuses

  1360. to be

  1361. comforted.

  1362. When I

  1363. remember God,

  1364. I moan.

  1365. When I

  1366. meditate,

  1367. he's talking

  1368. about on the

  1369. truth of

  1370. God,

  1371. my spirit

  1372. faints.

  1373. We do

  1374. not know

  1375. the circumstance

  1376. of Asaph's

  1377. sorrow,

  1378. but we

  1379. do know

  1380. that it

  1381. goes to

  1382. God.

  1383. It takes

  1384. faith to

  1385. turn to

  1386. God in

  1387. our anguish.

  1388. It's the

  1389. place we

  1390. most need

  1391. to be

  1392. when we

  1393. feel this

  1394. gap in

  1395. which we

  1396. live in

  1397. the world.

  1398. So the

  1399. Bible

  1400. affirms

  1401. sorrow

  1402. as normative.

  1403. We're going

  1404. to experience

  1405. this in

  1406. our life.

  1407. There is

  1408. an unhealthy

  1409. way to

  1410. deal with

  1411. it,

  1412. and there

  1413. is a

  1414. healthy

  1415. way to

  1416. deal with

  1417. it.

  1418. And that

  1419. starts with

  1420. language.

  1421. So secondly,

  1422. the Bible

  1423. gives us

  1424. language for

  1425. our sorrow.

  1426. The Bible

  1427. teaches us

  1428. how to

  1429. properly

  1430. issue a

  1431. faithful

  1432. complaint

  1433. to God.

  1434. We do

  1435. not have

  1436. to learn

  1437. how to

  1438. complain.

  1439. We're all

  1440. pretty naturally

  1441. good at

  1442. complaining.

  1443. Again,

  1444. some of us

  1445. better than

  1446. others.

  1447. It's

  1448. hardwired

  1449. into us.

  1450. We know

  1451. how to

  1452. complain.

  1453. Babies

  1454. know how

  1455. to cry.

  1456. It doesn't

  1457. take them

  1458. long.

  1459. If all

  1460. is well

  1461. in the

  1462. delivery

  1463. room,

  1464. they start

  1465. complaining

  1466. right away.

  1467. They say,

  1468. what have

  1469. you done

  1470. to me?

  1471. And they're

  1472. right to

  1473. do so.

  1474. It's

  1475. traumatic.

  1476. They don't

  1477. have to

  1478. learn how

  1479. to cry.

  1480. Toddlers

  1481. do not

  1482. have to

  1483. learn how

  1484. to be

  1485. whiny.

  1486. Later in

  1487. the book

  1488. I mentioned

  1489. earlier,

  1490. Dark Clouds,

  1491. Deep Mercy,

  1492. Mark Rogop

  1493. writes,

  1494. to cry

  1495. is human,

  1496. to lament

  1497. is Christian.

  1498. God

  1499. teaches us

  1500. how to

  1501. faithfully

  1502. complain in

  1503. the midst

  1504. of our

  1505. sorrow.

  1506. He gives

  1507. us a

  1508. language

  1509. for it.

  1510. He

  1511. models it

  1512. out for

  1513. us

  1514. through the

  1515. inspired

  1516. word of

  1517. God.

  1518. Various

  1519. circumstances,

  1520. various

  1521. writers

  1522. issuing

  1523. faithful

  1524. complaints

  1525. to him.

  1526. Have these

  1527. psalms ever

  1528. made you

  1529. uncomfortable?

  1530. Have you ever

  1531. wondered,

  1532. like,

  1533. what in the

  1534. world do I

  1535. do with

  1536. this?

  1537. This

  1538. seems so

  1539. against,

  1540. so set

  1541. against

  1542. God.

  1543. What we

  1544. need to do

  1545. with them

  1546. is learn

  1547. from them.

  1548. We need

  1549. to recognize

  1550. that God

  1551. is capable

  1552. of handling

  1553. your hard

  1554. questions.

  1555. If you

  1556. ask me

  1557. these kinds

  1558. of questions,

  1559. I might

  1560. crumble

  1561. into a

  1562. ball.

  1563. God

  1564. can handle

  1565. difficult

  1566. questions.

  1567. And Asaph

  1568. asks some

  1569. difficult

  1570. questions.

  1571. I don't

  1572. think he's

  1573. being rhetorical.

  1574. I try

  1575. to read

  1576. it in

  1577. that way.

  1578. You

  1579. might be

  1580. going,

  1581. wait a

  1582. second.

  1583. These

  1584. are all

  1585. rhetorical

  1586. questions.

  1587. I don't

  1588. think so

  1589. because in

  1590. verse 10

  1591. he says,

  1592. then I

  1593. said,

  1594. right?

  1595. If we

  1596. understand the

  1597. Hebrew word

  1598. salah,

  1599. right,

  1600. there's this

  1601. break there

  1602. and then

  1603. there's a

  1604. turn in

  1605. verse 10

  1606. when he

  1607. says,

  1608. then I

  1609. said,

  1610. right?

  1611. And this

  1612. is the

  1613. pattern

  1614. throughout

  1615. these

  1616. psalms of

  1617. lament,

  1618. right?

  1619. Difficult

  1620. questions asked,

  1621. complaints

  1622. issued,

  1623. and then

  1624. remembering

  1625. then

  1626. responses

  1627. to

  1628. those

  1629. complaints.

  1630. So listen

  1631. again to

  1632. what he

  1633. says,

  1634. verse 4

  1635. and following.

  1636. You hold

  1637. my eyelids

  1638. open.

  1639. I am so

  1640. troubled that

  1641. I cannot

  1642. speak,

  1643. right?

  1644. He cannot

  1645. sleep and

  1646. he cannot

  1647. speak.

  1648. speak.

  1649. I consider

  1650. the days

  1651. of old,

  1652. the years

  1653. long ago.

  1654. I said,

  1655. let me

  1656. remember my

  1657. song in

  1658. the night.

  1659. Let me

  1660. meditate in

  1661. my heart.

  1662. Then my

  1663. spirit made

  1664. a diligent

  1665. search,

  1666. right?

  1667. Read this,

  1668. he's troubled,

  1669. right?

  1670. He wants

  1671. the restored

  1672. song,

  1673. right?

  1674. And so

  1675. he's searching

  1676. for it.

  1677. He's trying

  1678. to sort

  1679. out this

  1680. emotion that

  1681. he's feeling

  1682. so deeply.

  1683. And he

  1684. asked the

  1685. questions,

  1686. will the

  1687. Lord spurn

  1688. forever and

  1689. never again

  1690. be favorable?

  1691. That's how he

  1692. feels in that

  1693. moment.

  1694. God has

  1695. just left

  1696. him,

  1697. he has

  1698. abandoned

  1699. him,

  1700. is the

  1701. emotion he's

  1702. expressing.

  1703. Has his

  1704. steadfast

  1705. love

  1706. forever

  1707. ceased?

  1708. This would

  1709. be your

  1710. strongest

  1711. argument that

  1712. he's being

  1713. rhetorical,

  1714. right?

  1715. The language

  1716. steadfast

  1717. love

  1718. ceased.

  1719. Has his

  1720. steadfast

  1721. love

  1722. ceased?

  1723. Are his

  1724. promises at

  1725. an end

  1726. for all

  1727. time?

  1728. Has God

  1729. forgotten

  1730. to be

  1731. gracious?

  1732. Has he

  1733. in anger

  1734. shut up

  1735. his

  1736. compassion?

  1737. Beloved,

  1738. it's okay

  1739. to ask

  1740. hard

  1741. questions.

  1742. It's okay

  1743. in faith

  1744. to cry

  1745. out to

  1746. God,

  1747. where are

  1748. you?

  1749. What is

  1750. going on?

  1751. This isn't

  1752. how things

  1753. are supposed

  1754. to be.

  1755. The Bible

  1756. affirms

  1757. sorrow

  1758. is normative.

  1759. The Bible

  1760. gives us

  1761. language

  1762. for our

  1763. sorrow.

  1764. It invites

  1765. us

  1766. to hurt,

  1767. but to

  1768. hurt in

  1769. God's

  1770. presence.

  1771. And thirdly,

  1772. the Bible

  1773. gives us

  1774. relief

  1775. from our

  1776. sorrow.

  1777. The Bible

  1778. gives us

  1779. relief

  1780. from our

  1781. sorrow.

  1782. sorrow.

  1783. There's

  1784. some sub

  1785. points here.

  1786. Number one,

  1787. through

  1788. remembering

  1789. what God

  1790. has done.

  1791. The Bible

  1792. gives us

  1793. relief from

  1794. our sorrow

  1795. through

  1796. remembering

  1797. what God

  1798. has done.

  1799. There's a

  1800. turn now,

  1801. right?

  1802. Verse 10,

  1803. Asaph says,

  1804. then I

  1805. said,

  1806. I will

  1807. appeal to

  1808. this,

  1809. to the

  1810. years of

  1811. the right

  1812. hand of

  1813. the Most

  1814. High.

  1815. He's going

  1816. to remember

  1817. God's

  1818. powerful

  1819. work.

  1820. His right

  1821. hand represents

  1822. his sovereignty.

  1823. He says,

  1824. verse 11,

  1825. I will

  1826. remember

  1827. the deeds

  1828. of the

  1829. Lord.

  1830. Yes,

  1831. I will

  1832. remember

  1833. your

  1834. wonders

  1835. of

  1836. old.

  1837. He's

  1838. speaking

  1839. very

  1840. generally

  1841. and

  1842. generically.

  1843. He's

  1844. remembering

  1845. all of

  1846. the

  1847. things

  1848. that

  1849. God

  1850. has

  1851. done

  1852. for

  1853. his

  1854. people

  1855. and

  1856. for

  1857. him.

  1858. Verse 12,

  1859. I will

  1860. ponder

  1861. all your

  1862. work

  1863. and

  1864. meditate

  1865. on

  1866. your

  1867. mighty

  1868. deeds.

  1869. Right?

  1870. Not

  1871. just have

  1872. them told

  1873. to me,

  1874. but I'm

  1875. going to

  1876. roll

  1877. them

  1878. around.

  1879. Right?

  1880. I'm

  1881. going to

  1882. let them

  1883. sink

  1884. deep

  1885. within

  1886. me.

  1887. And

  1888. your

  1889. way,

  1890. O

  1891. God,

  1892. is

  1893. holy,

  1894. perfect,

  1895. set

  1896. apart.

  1897. What

  1898. God

  1899. is

  1900. great

  1901. like

  1902. our

  1903. God?

  1904. You

  1905. are the

  1906. God

  1907. who

  1908. works

  1909. wonders.

  1910. You

  1911. have

  1912. made

  1913. known

  1914. your

  1915. might

  1916. among

  1917. the

  1918. peoples.

  1919. You

  1920. with

  1921. your

  1922. arm

  1923. redeemed

  1924. your

  1925. people,

  1926. the

  1927. children

  1928. of

  1929. Jacob

  1930. and

  1931. Joseph.

  1932. He

  1933. turns

  1934. now

  1935. to

  1936. praise

  1937. for

  1938. who

  1939. God

  1940. is

  1941. because

  1942. of

  1943. what

  1944. God

  1945. has

  1946. done.

  1947. And

  1948. I

  1949. don't

  1950. think

  1951. when we

  1952. read

  1953. these

  1954. Psalms

  1955. of

  1956. lament

  1957. that

  1958. we

  1959. should

  1960. be

  1961. reading

  1962. them

  1963. in

  1964. real

  1965. time.

  1966. I

  1967. don't

  1968. think

  1969. that

  1970. we

  1971. should

  1972. read

  1973. them

  1974. and

  1975. feel

  1976. like

  1977. Asaph

  1978. went

  1979. through

  1980. an

  1981. emotional

  1982. process

  1983. that

  1984. took

  1985. all

  1986. of

  1987. 40

  1988. seconds.

  1989. These

  1990. are

  1991. songs

  1992. written

  1993. in

  1994. retrospect

  1995. of a

  1996. time

  1997. in

  1998. his

  1999. life.

  2000. Was

  2001. it

  2002. days?

  2003. Was

  2004. it

  2005. weeks?

  2006. I

  2007. don't

  2008. know.

  2009. But

  2010. there

  2011. seems

  2012. to be

  2013. a

  2014. deep

  2015. anguish

  2016. when we

  2017. read

  2018. the

  2019. Psalms

  2020. of

  2021. lament.

  2022. Not

  2023. a

  2024. I'm

  2025. feeling

  2026. bummed

  2027. about

  2028. that.

  2029. Well,

  2030. God's

  2031. promises

  2032. are

  2033. good.

  2034. There are

  2035. nights

  2036. spent

  2037. awake.

  2038. there

  2039. there is

  2040. a

  2041. pouring

  2042. out

  2043. that

  2044. seems

  2045. to be

  2046. expressed

  2047. in

  2048. these

  2049. psalms

  2050. of

  2051. lament.

  2052. Sometimes

  2053. finding

  2054. yourself

  2055. turning in

  2056. faith to

  2057. God and

  2058. coming

  2059. through

  2060. times of

  2061. sorrow

  2062. takes

  2063. great

  2064. patience

  2065. and it

  2066. takes

  2067. repetition

  2068. meditating

  2069. on

  2070. and being

  2071. reminded of

  2072. over and

  2073. over and

  2074. over again

  2075. of God's

  2076. goodness

  2077. to you.

  2078. The

  2079. surety of

  2080. his

  2081. promises.

  2082. Beloved,

  2083. this is at

  2084. least a

  2085. reason you

  2086. should come

  2087. and fellowship

  2088. with the

  2089. church each

  2090. and every

  2091. Lord's

  2092. day.

  2093. You're

  2094. slow

  2095. learners

  2096. and quick

  2097. to forget

  2098. to be

  2099. reminded

  2100. again

  2101. and again

  2102. and again.

  2103. An

  2104. expression

  2105. of this

  2106. is Psalm

  2107. 88.

  2108. And I

  2109. don't really

  2110. like Psalm

  2111. 88.

  2112. I'll be

  2113. honest.

  2114. I think

  2115. I like

  2116. the lesson

  2117. it teaches

  2118. me.

  2119. It makes

  2120. me so

  2121. uncomfortable.

  2122. The other

  2123. Psalms of

  2124. lament end

  2125. on a

  2126. positive

  2127. note.

  2128. This one

  2129. does not.

  2130. I'm going

  2131. to read

  2132. the first

  2133. six verses

  2134. and then

  2135. I'll jump

  2136. down and

  2137. I'll tell

  2138. you where

  2139. it would

  2140. go if

  2141. you'd like

  2142. to follow

  2143. along.

  2144. The

  2145. psalmist

  2146. here writes,

  2147. I think it's

  2148. the son of

  2149. Korah if I

  2150. remember

  2151. correctly.

  2152. Oh Lord

  2153. God of my

  2154. salvation,

  2155. I cry

  2156. out day

  2157. and night

  2158. before you.

  2159. So here we

  2160. are.

  2161. There's

  2162. days going

  2163. by.

  2164. Let my

  2165. prayer come

  2166. before you

  2167. incline your

  2168. ear to my

  2169. cry for my

  2170. soul is full

  2171. of troubles

  2172. and my life

  2173. draws near

  2174. to shield.

  2175. I am counted

  2176. among those

  2177. who go down

  2178. to the pit.

  2179. I am a

  2180. man who

  2181. has no

  2182. strength like

  2183. one set

  2184. loose among

  2185. the dead,

  2186. like the

  2187. slain that

  2188. lie in the

  2189. grave,

  2190. like those

  2191. whom you

  2192. remember no

  2193. more for

  2194. they are cut

  2195. off from

  2196. your hand.

  2197. You have

  2198. put me in

  2199. the depths

  2200. of the pit

  2201. in the

  2202. regions dark

  2203. and deep.

  2204. Oh, what an

  2205. expression of

  2206. anguish this

  2207. man is

  2208. feeling.

  2209. And if this

  2210. was following

  2211. the normal

  2212. pattern, at

  2213. some place in

  2214. here he would

  2215. say, but

  2216. you, oh

  2217. Lord, then

  2218. I recalled.

  2219. But he never

  2220. does that in

  2221. this psalm.

  2222. And you'll

  2223. see how it

  2224. ends beginning

  2225. in verse 14

  2226. to the end.

  2227. Oh, Lord,

  2228. why do you

  2229. cast my

  2230. soul away?

  2231. Why do you

  2232. hide your

  2233. face from

  2234. me?

  2235. Afflicted

  2236. and close to

  2237. death from

  2238. my youth up,

  2239. I suffer your

  2240. tears.

  2241. I am helpless.

  2242. Your wrath

  2243. has swept over

  2244. me.

  2245. Your dreadful

  2246. assaults destroy

  2247. me.

  2248. They surround

  2249. me like a

  2250. flood all day

  2251. long.

  2252. They close in

  2253. on me together.

  2254. You have

  2255. caused my

  2256. beloved and

  2257. my friend to

  2258. shun me.

  2259. My companion

  2260. have become

  2261. darkness or

  2262. darkness is

  2263. my only

  2264. companion.

  2265. And it

  2266. ends.

  2267. And I

  2268. want the

  2269. textual critics

  2270. to find the

  2271. text that

  2272. goes, we

  2273. found the

  2274. last three

  2275. verses of

  2276. Psalm 88.

  2277. But it

  2278. ends at

  2279. that point.

  2280. And that

  2281. does not

  2282. mean that

  2283. there's not

  2284. relief for

  2285. our sorrow,

  2286. but it

  2287. does mean

  2288. this is the

  2289. lesson that

  2290. I hope

  2291. to learn

  2292. that we

  2293. need to be

  2294. patient and

  2295. we need to

  2296. rely upon

  2297. the Lord

  2298. that he

  2299. will deliver

  2300. us from

  2301. sorrow.

  2302. Second, the

  2303. Bible gives us

  2304. relief from our

  2305. sorrow through

  2306. being reminded of

  2307. what God has

  2308. done.

  2309. So we're

  2310. meant to

  2311. remember, but

  2312. sometimes we

  2313. need to be

  2314. reminded.

  2315. The great

  2316. preacher, Dr.

  2317. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  2318. once said, we

  2319. need to stop

  2320. listening to

  2321. ourselves and

  2322. start talking

  2323. to ourselves,

  2324. reminding ourselves

  2325. of great truths.

  2326. And I would

  2327. like to add to

  2328. that, and we

  2329. need others to

  2330. talk to us,

  2331. to tell us

  2332. important truths

  2333. that will draw

  2334. us from a

  2335. place of sorrow

  2336. to a place of

  2337. hope.

  2338. We often, and I

  2339. would say more

  2340. often than not,

  2341. need others'

  2342. help in the

  2343. work of

  2344. remembering.

  2345. So come

  2346. to church.

  2347. We are

  2348. working this

  2349. into the

  2350. fabric of

  2351. what we

  2352. do together.

  2353. The pattern

  2354. of being with

  2355. God's people

  2356. and participating

  2357. in God's

  2358. graces to

  2359. you in being

  2360. with God's

  2361. people will

  2362. help you in

  2363. these times,

  2364. and it will

  2365. prepare you

  2366. for them.

  2367. Look for

  2368. wise counsel

  2369. within the

  2370. church.

  2371. Look for

  2372. people who

  2373. have walked

  2374. through sorrow

  2375. and can show

  2376. you how the

  2377. scripture speaks

  2378. to that

  2379. sorrow.

  2380. And be

  2381. willing to

  2382. listen.

  2383. Be willing to

  2384. take up and

  2385. hear good

  2386. truth.

  2387. And sometimes

  2388. that is so

  2389. difficult to

  2390. do, particularly

  2391. when you're

  2392. experiencing an

  2393. irrational,

  2394. disproportionate

  2395. sorrow.

  2396. Everything is

  2397. gray when

  2398. you're feeling

  2399. sad like that.

  2400. Let other

  2401. people try to

  2402. paint the

  2403. picture for

  2404. you.

  2405. Try to

  2406. hear the

  2407. good truths

  2408. they're speaking

  2409. into your

  2410. life.

  2411. Proverbs

    Proverbs 18 chapter mention

  2412. chapter 18

  2413. and verse

  2414. 1 says,

  2415. whoever isolates

  2416. himself,

  2417. seeks his

  2418. own desire.

  2419. He breaks

  2420. out against

  2421. all sound

  2422. judgment.

  2423. It's so

  2424. often that

  2425. when we're

  2426. feeling sad,

  2427. we don't want

  2428. to be around

  2429. other people

  2430. because we

  2431. don't want

  2432. to show

  2433. people that

  2434. we're not

  2435. doing well.

  2436. We feel a

  2437. pressure to

  2438. be doing

  2439. well all

  2440. the time.

  2441. We may

  2442. not want

  2443. to repeat

  2444. the reason

  2445. for our

  2446. sorrow again

  2447. and again,

  2448. but it's the

  2449. thing most

  2450. needful for

  2451. us, that we

  2452. would come

  2453. together, that

  2454. we would press

  2455. at one

  2456. another.

  2457. Proverbs 18

    Proverbs 18:1

  2458. verse 1 says

  2459. that we would

  2460. not break out

  2461. against, but

  2462. that we

  2463. would seek

  2464. sound judgment.

  2465. And if you

  2466. are in the

  2467. process of

  2468. helping someone

  2469. else, reminding

  2470. someone else of

  2471. what God has

  2472. done, this

  2473. also often

  2474. takes great

  2475. patience and

  2476. repetition.

  2477. It takes time

  2478. to sit with

  2479. somebody and

  2480. to hear what

  2481. they're experiencing

  2482. and help them

  2483. to sort through

  2484. the complexity

  2485. of it.

  2486. you may

  2487. speak truth

  2488. to someone

  2489. and they

  2490. say they

  2491. get it and

  2492. they go live

  2493. in absolute

  2494. contradiction

  2495. to it.

  2496. In counseling

  2497. people who

  2498. are experiencing

  2499. depression, I

  2500. so desperately

  2501. want at the

  2502. end of that

  2503. counseling session

  2504. the person to

  2505. go, I feel

  2506. great now.

  2507. Thank you so

  2508. much.

  2509. And very

  2510. rarely they

  2511. do.

  2512. It takes

  2513. time for

  2514. truth to

  2515. settle into

  2516. our hearts,

  2517. right?

  2518. To take root

  2519. and to

  2520. bring forth

  2521. fruit.

  2522. And especially

  2523. when people are

  2524. dealing with an

  2525. irrational sorrow,

  2526. it's just so

  2527. difficult for them

  2528. to pick them

  2529. up and to

  2530. carry them

  2531. around as

  2532. they should.

  2533. So be patient

  2534. with your church

  2535. members, your

  2536. friends and your

  2537. family that are

  2538. experiencing this

  2539. kind of sadness.

  2540. Continue to sit

  2541. alongside them.

  2542. Sometimes they need

  2543. you to be quiet

  2544. and just let

  2545. them speak.

  2546. Proverbs 25

  2547. and verse 20

  2548. says, whoever

  2549. sings songs to

  2550. a heavy heart

  2551. is like one

  2552. who takes off

  2553. a garment on

  2554. a cold day.

  2555. They're saying

  2556. you're foolish.

  2557. Don't sing

  2558. songs to a

  2559. heavy heart.

  2560. This is not

  2561. what they need

  2562. right now.

  2563. And then the

  2564. verse goes on

  2565. to say, and

  2566. like vinegar

  2567. on soda.

  2568. Because of all

  2569. major volcano

  2570. erupt at some

  2571. point.

  2572. It's agitating.

  2573. Come around a

  2574. person who's sad

  2575. and just be

  2576. cheery and think

  2577. that's the

  2578. resolution for

  2579. their sadness.

  2580. So often it's

  2581. a listening ear,

  2582. a kind word,

  2583. a prayer,

  2584. and a hug.

  2585. And that's what

  2586. you can do for

  2587. the person in

  2588. that moment.

  2589. Proverbs 20

    Proverbs 20:5

  2590. verse 5 says,

  2591. the purpose in

  2592. a man's heart

  2593. is like deep

  2594. water.

  2595. But a man of

  2596. understanding,

  2597. will draw it

  2598. out.

  2599. It's a patient

  2600. work.

  2601. It takes time

  2602. to help

  2603. somebody work

  2604. through that.

  2605. I know I'm

  2606. running a bit

  2607. short on time,

  2608. but I'm going

  2609. to read a

  2610. children's book

  2611. to you.

  2612. And I hope

  2613. you'll forgive

  2614. me the time.

  2615. That's why I've

  2616. done a foolish

  2617. thing with a

  2618. shirt this

  2619. morning, and

  2620. now I'm

  2621. going to read

  2622. a book,

  2623. a children's

  2624. book, on

  2625. Sunday

  2626. morning.

  2627. This book

  2628. is phenomenal.

  2629. As a person

  2630. who deals

  2631. with sadness,

  2632. I cried the

  2633. first time I

  2634. read it.

  2635. my mother-in-law

  2636. got it for

  2637. Silas, because

  2638. Silas is

  2639. sometimes grumpy,

  2640. and the book

  2641. is entitled

  2642. Grumpy Monkey.

  2643. And I don't

  2644. think she

  2645. realized that

  2646. it's a book

  2647. about depression.

  2648. So I said,

  2649. hey buddy,

  2650. let's read

  2651. your new

  2652. book.

  2653. And it

  2654. brought me

  2655. to tears.

  2656. Now, this

  2657. is not a

  2658. complete prescription

  2659. for how to help

  2660. somebody with

  2661. sorrow.

  2662. That's not the

  2663. point I'm

  2664. trying to make.

  2665. But I think

  2666. you'll appreciate it,

  2667. and I'll try to

  2668. show you the

  2669. pictures as best

  2670. I can.

  2671. Sorry if I

  2672. don't pan

  2673. them around

  2674. for the sake

  2675. of time.

  2676. Okay.

  2677. One wonderful

  2678. day,

  2679. Jim Pansy

  2680. woke to

  2681. discover that

  2682. nothing was

  2683. right.

  2684. The sun was

  2685. too bright,

  2686. the sky was

  2687. too blue,

  2688. and the

  2689. bananas were

  2690. too sweet.

  2691. Disproportionate,

  2692. right?

  2693. None of that

  2694. makes any

  2695. sense.

  2696. Jim was

  2697. confused.

  2698. Jim was

  2699. the gorilla.

  2700. What's going

  2701. on?

  2702. Maybe you're

  2703. grumpy,

  2704. suggested

  2705. Norman from

  2706. next door.

  2707. I'm not

  2708. grumpy,

  2709. Jim insisted.

  2710. On his

  2711. walk, he

  2712. met

  2713. Marabou.

  2714. Jim's

  2715. grumpy,

  2716. Norman told

  2717. Marabou.

  2718. Why are you

  2719. grumpy,

  2720. Jim, asked

  2721. Marabou.

  2722. It's such a

  2723. wonderful day.

  2724. They're singing

  2725. songs to the

  2726. person who's

  2727. heavy-hearted.

  2728. What's wrong

  2729. with you?

  2730. It's such a

  2731. wonderful day.

  2732. Grumpy?

  2733. Me?

  2734. I'm not

  2735. grumpy,

  2736. said Jim.

  2737. But look at

  2738. how you're

  2739. standing,

  2740. Marabou said.

  2741. It's true,

  2742. said Norman.

  2743. You're all

  2744. hunched.

  2745. So Jim

  2746. loosened up.

  2747. I don't know if

  2748. you can see that

  2749. picture, but he

  2750. goes like this.

  2751. Then he ran

  2752. into the

  2753. lemur.

  2754. Jim's

  2755. grumpy,

  2756. Norman told

  2757. the lemur.

  2758. Why are you

  2759. grumpy,

  2760. Jim, asked

  2761. lemur.

  2762. It's such a

  2763. wonderful day.

  2764. Grumpy?

  2765. Me?

  2766. I'm not

  2767. grumpy,

  2768. said Jim.

  2769. Your eyebrows

  2770. look grumpy,

  2771. said lemur.

  2772. It's true,

  2773. said Norman.

  2774. They're all

  2775. bunched up.

  2776. So Jim

  2777. raised his

  2778. brow.

  2779. He's going

  2780. like this,

  2781. pulling his

  2782. eyelids up.

  2783. Then he

  2784. tripped over

  2785. snake.

  2786. Oh no,

  2787. said Norman.

  2788. That's the last

  2789. thing you need

  2790. when you're

  2791. feeling so

  2792. grumpy.

  2793. Grumpy?

  2794. Me?

  2795. I'm not

  2796. grumpy,

  2797. said Jim.

  2798. Then why

  2799. that frown,

  2800. said snake.

  2801. I think it's

  2802. because he

  2803. tripped over

  2804. you, Norman

  2805. whispered snake.

  2806. So Jim

  2807. put on a

  2808. smile.

  2809. Finally,

  2810. Jim looked

  2811. happy.

  2812. I hope you

  2813. can see

  2814. this.

  2815. But people

  2816. who are

  2817. dealing with

  2818. deep sorrow,

  2819. with depression,

  2820. this is how

  2821. they feel like

  2822. they have to

  2823. act.

  2824. This is why

  2825. sometimes they

  2826. don't come

  2827. together.

  2828. Because they

  2829. just can't

  2830. do it.

  2831. They're just

  2832. exhausted.

  2833. They can't

  2834. put this

  2835. face on.

  2836. I really

  2837. hope one

  2838. of you

  2839. comes in

  2840. doing that

  2841. some Sunday

  2842. morning.

  2843. I'll know

  2844. how you

  2845. feel.

  2846. But he

  2847. didn't feel

  2848. happy inside.

  2849. Everyone

  2850. wanted Jim

  2851. to enjoy

  2852. this wonderful

  2853. day.

  2854. You should

  2855. sing with

  2856. us,

  2857. said the

  2858. birds.

  2859. Jim

  2860. didn't feel

  2861. like singing.

  2862. You should

  2863. swing with

  2864. us,

  2865. said the

  2866. monkeys.

  2867. Jim

  2868. didn't feel

  2869. like swinging.

  2870. You should

  2871. roll with

  2872. us,

  2873. said the

  2874. zebras.

  2875. Jim

  2876. didn't feel

  2877. like rolling.

  2878. You should

  2879. stroll with

  2880. us,

  2881. said the

  2882. peacocks.

  2883. Jim

  2884. didn't feel

  2885. like strolling.

  2886. You should

  2887. lie in the

  2888. grass.

  2889. You should

  2890. stomp

  2891. your feet.

  2892. You should

  2893. take a bath

  2894. and make a

  2895. splash.

  2896. You should

  2897. hug someone.

  2898. You should

  2899. laugh.

  2900. You should

  2901. take a nap.

  2902. You should

  2903. eat old

  2904. meat or

  2905. some honey.

  2906. You should

  2907. jump up and

  2908. down.

  2909. You should

  2910. sit in the

  2911. sun.

  2912. I love

  2913. all these

  2914. animals are

  2915. doing things

  2916. that are

  2917. characteristic of

  2918. their animal.

  2919. And then the

  2920. porcupine says,

  2921. you should

  2922. dance.

  2923. So everyone's

  2924. got a solution.

  2925. Everyone's got

  2926. an offering,

  2927. some piece of

  2928. advice for

  2929. Jim and his

  2930. grumpiness.

  2931. But Jim didn't

  2932. feel like doing

  2933. any of that.

  2934. Why are you

  2935. grumpy,

  2936. Jim?

  2937. Asked the

  2938. others.

  2939. It's such a

  2940. wonderful day.

  2941. Jim yells,

  2942. I'm not

  2943. grumpy,

  2944. shouted Jim

  2945. as he beat

  2946. his chest.

  2947. And he

  2948. stormed off.

  2949. Jim felt

  2950. sorry.

  2951. A little

  2952. sorry for

  2953. shouting at

  2954. everyone,

  2955. but mostly

  2956. sorry for

  2957. himself.

  2958. I guess I

  2959. am grumpy,

  2960. Jim sighed.

  2961. And just as

  2962. he was starting

  2963. to feel really

  2964. sad,

  2965. he came

  2966. upon Norman.

  2967. Norman was

  2968. slumped,

  2969. his eyebrows

  2970. were bunched

  2971. up,

  2972. and he was

  2973. frowning.

  2974. What's the

  2975. matter?

  2976. Are you

  2977. grumpy?

  2978. Asked Jim.

  2979. No,

  2980. I dance with

  2981. porcupine,

  2982. said Norman.

  2983. Circumstantial

  2984. sorrow,

  2985. right?

  2986. Something

  2987. happened,

  2988. he's feeling

  2989. pain,

  2990. a little grumpy

  2991. about that.

  2992. Are you

  2993. okay?

  2994. Asked Jim.

  2995. It hurts,

  2996. but I'll

  2997. probably feel

  2998. better soon

  2999. enough,

  3000. said Norman.

  3001. Are you

  3002. still grumpy?

  3003. Yes,

  3004. said Jim,

  3005. but I'll

  3006. probably feel

  3007. better soon

  3008. enough too.

  3009. For now,

  3010. I need to

  3011. be grumpy.

  3012. It's a

  3013. wonderful day

  3014. to be grumpy,

  3015. said Norman.

  3016. Jim agreed.

  3017. And he

  3018. already felt

  3019. a little bit

  3020. better.

  3021. So,

  3022. I've read

  3023. this to a

  3024. lot of

  3025. people in

  3026. my study.

  3027. People who

  3028. are feeling

  3029. sorrowful

  3030. need

  3031. fewer

  3032. porcupines

  3033. and more

  3034. Normans.

  3035. Someone who's

  3036. willing to

  3037. sit and

  3038. willing to

  3039. listen and

  3040. be patient

  3041. through the

  3042. process.

  3043. Now,

  3044. the book

  3045. falls apart

  3046. because,

  3047. of course,

  3048. Norman

  3049. doesn't offer

  3050. him any

  3051. biblical

  3052. wisdom.

  3053. I would

  3054. like to

  3055. write

  3056. Grumpy

  3057. Monkey 2

  3058. where Norman

  3059. helps

  3060. Jim see

  3061. that his

  3062. countenance

  3063. should be

  3064. lifted because

  3065. of what the

  3066. Lord has

  3067. done

  3068. for a

  3069. monkey.

  3070. Okay.

  3071. Finally,

  3072. the Bible

  3073. gives us

  3074. release from

  3075. our sorrow

  3076. lastly,

  3077. through

  3078. remembering

  3079. and being

  3080. reminded of

  3081. what God

  3082. is doing

  3083. and what

  3084. he has

  3085. promised

  3086. to do.

  3087. what he

  3088. is doing

  3089. and what

  3090. he's

  3091. promised

  3092. to do.

  3093. What he's

  3094. done

  3095. roots for

  3096. us what

  3097. he is

  3098. doing and

  3099. what he's

  3100. promised

  3101. to do.

  3102. He's

  3103. done good

  3104. things.

  3105. Meditating

  3106. on that

  3107. helps us

  3108. to believe

  3109. that he's

  3110. doing good

  3111. things and

  3112. will finally

  3113. do good

  3114. things.

  3115. Verse 16,

  3116. Psalm 77,

    Psalms 77:16

  3117. verse 16,

  3118. where does

  3119. Asaph's mind

  3120. specifically

  3121. go to

  3122. relieve his

  3123. sorrow?

  3124. In the

  3125. previous

  3126. stanza,

  3127. it was

  3128. general,

  3129. but now

  3130. specifically,

  3131. it goes to

  3132. the Exodus

  3133. story.

  3134. Asaph

  3135. remembers

  3136. that God

  3137. delivered his

  3138. people from

  3139. the shackles

  3140. of slavery.

  3141. We know

  3142. that this

  3143. Exodus was

  3144. a shadow

  3145. of a

  3146. greater

  3147. delivery.

  3148. It was

  3149. with this

  3150. in mind,

  3151. as Paul

  3152. writes in

  3153. Romans 8,

  3154. about living

  3155. in the

  3156. spirit that

  3157. he says,

  3158. in verse

  3159. 15,

  3160. for you

  3161. do not

  3162. receive the

  3163. spirit of

  3164. slavery to

  3165. fall back

  3166. into fear,

  3167. but you

  3168. have received

  3169. the spirit

  3170. of adoption

  3171. as sons,

  3172. by whom

  3173. we cry,

  3174. Abba,

  3175. Father.

  3176. The spirit

  3177. himself bears

  3178. witness with

  3179. our spirit

  3180. that we are

  3181. children of

  3182. God,

  3183. and if

  3184. children,

  3185. then heirs,

  3186. heirs of

  3187. God and

  3188. fellow heirs

  3189. with Christ,

  3190. provided we

  3191. suffer with

  3192. him in

  3193. order that

  3194. we may

  3195. also be

  3196. glorified with

  3197. him.

  3198. So in the

  3199. midst of this

  3200. train of

  3201. thought,

  3202. life by

  3203. the spirit,

  3204. a spirit

  3205. not for

  3206. slavery,

  3207. but a spirit

  3208. for sonship,

  3209. freedom as

  3210. children and

  3211. heirs,

  3212. Paul recognized

  3213. that we will

  3214. suffer,

  3215. we'll share

  3216. and experience

  3217. the suffering

  3218. of Christ.

  3219. we're united

  3220. to the man

  3221. of sorrows.

  3222. Then he

  3223. says,

  3224. verse 18,

  3225. for I

  3226. consider that

  3227. the sufferings

  3228. of this

  3229. present time

  3230. are not

  3231. worth comparing

  3232. with the

  3233. glory that

  3234. is to be

  3235. revealed to

  3236. us.

  3237. Because of

  3238. who we

  3239. are in

  3240. Jesus,

  3241. we have

  3242. this greater

  3243. hope,

  3244. right?

  3245. It pulls

  3246. us through

  3247. the gap.

  3248. And then

  3249. down into

  3250. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  3251. chapter 8.

  3252. used so

  3253. tritely,

  3254. like beloved,

  3255. don't miss

  3256. what Paul is

  3257. saying in

  3258. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  3259. 8 and

  3260. verse 28.

  3261. And we

  3262. know that

  3263. for those

  3264. who love

  3265. God,

  3266. all things

  3267. work together

  3268. for good

  3269. for those

  3270. who are

  3271. called

  3272. according to

  3273. his purpose.

  3274. And what's

  3275. the foundation

  3276. of that?

  3277. Right?

  3278. He goes on

  3279. to say,

  3280. for those

  3281. he foreknew,

  3282. he also

  3283. predestined

  3284. to be

  3285. conformed

  3286. to the

  3287. image

  3288. of his

  3289. son.

  3290. The good

  3291. he's working

  3292. in us is

  3293. that we

  3294. would be

  3295. like

  3296. Jesus

  3297. in order

  3298. that he

  3299. might be

  3300. the first

  3301. born among

  3302. many

  3303. brothers.

  3304. And those

  3305. whom he

  3306. predestined,

  3307. he also

  3308. called.

  3309. And those

  3310. whom he

  3311. called,

  3312. he also

  3313. justified.

  3314. And those

  3315. whom he

  3316. justifies,

  3317. he also

  3318. glorified.

  3319. Justification

  3320. by faith

  3321. alone is

  3322. the foundation

  3323. on which

  3324. to build

  3325. sorrow

  3326. into joy.

  3327. For the

  3328. fact,

  3329. beloved,

  3330. that we

  3331. could do

  3332. nothing

  3333. to save

  3334. ourselves.

  3335. We were

  3336. set in

  3337. every way

  3338. against

  3339. God

  3340. as his

  3341. enemy.

  3342. But because

  3343. of Christ's

  3344. sacrificial

  3345. death,

  3346. he takes

  3347. on our

  3348. sin,

  3349. his great

  3350. exchange as

  3351. Luther calls

  3352. it,

  3353. he takes

  3354. on our

  3355. sin,

  3356. he suffers

  3357. the wrath

  3358. of God

  3359. on our

  3360. behalf,

  3361. and he

  3362. grants to

  3363. us his

  3364. righteousness,

  3365. his

  3366. perfect

  3367. living.

  3368. And God

  3369. in the

  3370. great

  3371. courtroom

  3372. declares

  3373. us

  3374. righteous,

  3375. justified,

  3376. right?

  3377. Not only

  3378. having our

  3379. sin forgiven,

  3380. but being

  3381. found perfect

  3382. in Jesus.

  3383. Justification

  3384. by faith

  3385. alone in

  3386. Christ alone

  3387. is this

  3388. foundation on

  3389. which we

  3390. can build

  3391. sorrow

  3392. into joy.

  3393. We can

  3394. do that

  3395. in this

  3396. life,

  3397. and we

  3398. are promised

  3399. final relief

  3400. from sorrow

  3401. forevermore.

  3402. John

    John 16:20

  3403. chapter 16,

  3404. verse 20

  3405. and following,

  3406. Jesus says,

  3407. truly,

  3408. truly,

  3409. I say to

  3410. you,

  3411. you will

  3412. weep

  3413. and lament,

  3414. but the

  3415. world will

  3416. rejoice.

  3417. You will

  3418. be sorrowful,

  3419. but your

  3420. sorrow will

  3421. turn into

  3422. joy.

  3423. Your sorrow,

  3424. he's saying,

  3425. is going to

  3426. become

  3427. joy.

  3428. Not that it's

  3429. going to just

  3430. simply go

  3431. away and

  3432. be replaced

  3433. with joy.

  3434. It's going

  3435. to become

  3436. joy,

  3437. turned into

  3438. joy,

  3439. and catch

  3440. his explanation.

  3441. He says,

  3442. verse 21,

  3443. when a woman

  3444. is giving

  3445. birth,

  3446. she has

  3447. sorrow because

  3448. her hour

  3449. has come.

  3450. Pain,

  3451. I'm told.

  3452. But when

  3453. she has

  3454. delivered the

  3455. baby,

  3456. she no

  3457. longer

  3458. remembers

  3459. the anguish

  3460. for joy

  3461. that a

  3462. human being

  3463. has been

  3464. born into

  3465. the world.

  3466. All of that

  3467. suffering

  3468. suddenly becomes,

  3469. it's transformed

  3470. into joy.

  3471. It was so

  3472. worth it.

  3473. Men,

  3474. have you heard

  3475. your wives

  3476. say this?

  3477. The day that

  3478. Cade was born,

  3479. Sam said she

  3480. wanted to be

  3481. pregnant again,

  3482. and I went,

  3483. what?

  3484. Do you

  3485. remember

  3486. anything that

  3487. just happened?

  3488. All the

  3489. sorrow had

  3490. been turned

  3491. into joy

  3492. for her.

  3493. She suffered.

  3494. It hurt,

  3495. I'm told.

  3496. But she

  3497. was rapturous

  3498. to now hold

  3499. our firstborn

  3500. in her arms.

  3501. Incredible

  3502. reality that

  3503. God's going to

  3504. make everything

  3505. we experience,

  3506. all the sadness

  3507. we experience

  3508. in this world,

  3509. work for our

  3510. good,

  3511. Christlikeness

  3512. which is to

  3513. his praise.

  3514. Charles Spurgeon

  3515. once said,

  3516. this is on your

  3517. bulletin if you

  3518. care to look at

  3519. it,

  3520. your sorrow

  3521. itself shall be

  3522. turned into

  3523. joy.

  3524. Speaking of

  3525. this text in

  3526. John,

  3527. not the sorrow

  3528. to be taken

  3529. away and joy

  3530. to be put in

  3531. its place,

  3532. but the very

  3533. sorrow which

  3534. now grieves

  3535. you shall be

  3536. turned into

  3537. joy.

  3538. God not only

  3539. takes away the

  3540. bitterness and

  3541. gives sweetness

  3542. in its place,

  3543. but turns the

  3544. bitterness into

  3545. sweetness itself.

  3546. So the Bible

  3547. affirms sorrow

  3548. as normative.

  3549. The Bible gives

  3550. us language for

  3551. our sorrow,

  3552. and the Bible

  3553. gives us relief

  3554. from our sorrow

  3555. in Christ.

  3556. May we be

  3557. helped by the

  3558. grace of God

  3559. as we struggle

  3560. with sorrow in

  3561. this world and

  3562. set our eager
