  1. Good morning, church.

  2. If you will, please turn your copy of God's Word to Hebrews chapter 5.

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. He reads,

  5. Chapter 6, verse 1.

  6. Therefore, let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.

  7. So this morning, we pick up in our study of Hebrews with a new section in the text,

  8. or a new subdivision in what the author of Hebrews is trying to communicate.

  9. In this section, most commentators agree, starts with the beginning of our text,

  10. in chapter 5, verse 11, to chapter 6, verse 12,

  11. and is bookended by the same Greek word,

  12. and it's only used in these two places in the New Testament,

  13. and this is the word for dull or sluggish.

  14. So if you look in verse 11, it says,

  15. Since you have become dull of hearing, and then flipping over to chapter 6, verse 12,

  16. it says,

  17. Now, a cursory reading of chapters 5 through 7 of Hebrews demonstrate this section as an obvious pause in the writer's argument.

  18. But the purpose of this pause is not totally clear,

  19. and there's no real consensus among commentators on its purpose.

  20. However, I believe that this section plays an important role in our understanding of the larger goals,

  21. of what the author of Hebrews, and therefore our Lord,

  22. is seeking to accomplish in writing to the Hebrew believers and writing to us today.

  23. So for the sake of context, I'd like to remind us of the condition of the Hebrew church,

  24. and take a quick look at where we've been in Hebrews so far,

  25. and where the author is in persuading his listeners of the argument that he's trying to make.

  26. So we've learned already that the Hebrews are heavily persecuted people.

  27. We're told in other places in the text that their property has been plundered,

  28. that they've been imprisoned,

  29. and that they should soon expect to shed blood for their faith.

  30. Based off of the author's writing, they're a pretty beat-up congregation.

  31. We've also noted how they were being tempted to conform to the acceptable version of religion to the people around them,

  32. and for the Hebrews, this was Judaism.

  33. These Jews would have been cast out of their families and communities,

  34. and would have been at an extreme economic disadvantage for claiming Christ as their Lord.

  35. So they were tempted to practice their religion in private,

  36. or simply believe that they were worshipping the same God,

  37. so what was the hurt in going back to the old religion?

  38. So let's turn back to Hebrews 1 and remind ourselves of the way that this author addresses their persecution and temptation

  39. by looking at the author's thesis in chapter 1, verses 1 through 4.

  40. And again, I just briefly want to go through where we've been in Hebrews so far,

  41. so that we can understand what this segment of Scripture is doing in the author's argument.

  42. So again, Hebrews chapter 1, this is kind of the thesis for the rest of the book.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  43. Chapter 1, verses 1 through 4, he writes,

  44. I want to pause.

  45. I think a lot of times, as we're taking notes in sermons,

  46. we kind of skip through the introduction with our notes,

  47. and wait for the body of the sermon where I give you the three points, which I'm going to do.

  48. But I would encourage you not to skip this particular introduction,

  49. not because others aren't good or important,

  50. but there's a lot of things to point out in the introduction that will have relevance to the points that we're making later.

  51. So if you haven't picked up taking notes, and you're ready to, I would encourage you to do so.

  52. Okay, so from the beginning, the author of Hebrews asserts that Christ is supreme.

  53. He's the supreme inheritor and heir, the creator and sustainer of all things,

  54. the radiator and representer of God, the purifier of his people, and ruler over all.

  55. He says this at the beginning, and then spends the next 10 chapters and 18 verses proving it

  56. by demonstrating how Christ is higher than angels, greater than Moses,

  57. a sympathetic and eternal high priest, greater than Aaron,

  58. and begins discussing how he's like the mysterious Melchizedek, and then pause.

  59. He inserts the section.

  60. After this section, he returns to spend a whole chapter talking about Christ's high priestly office,

  61. and how it's after the order of Melchizedek.

  62. And then he proves the covenant ushered in by Christ is better,

  63. that the earthly dwelling place in the Old Testament temple was a shadow of the heavenly one that Christ dwells in.

  64. And then gloriously and climactically, the author demonstrates Jesus as the perfect and eternal sacrifice for his people.

  65. So let's turn to the end of this author proving his thesis, chapter 10, verse 11.

  66. And it reads,

  67. Every high priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices which can never take away sins.

  68. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins,

  69. he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

  70. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

  71. And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us,

  72. For after saying, this is the covenant that I will make with them,

  73. and after those days declares the Lord,

  74. I will put my laws on their hearts and write them on their minds.

  75. Then he adds,

  76. I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.

  77. Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

  78. And then drop the mic.

  79. The thesis has been proven.

  80. Right?

  81. Everything else, if you look forward in Hebrews from this point,

  82. is building on the implications from the thesis that he has proven in chapter 10, verse 18.

  83. Or through chapter 10, verse 18.

  84. But that begs the question,

  85. why pause for a whole chapter in the middle of this beautiful exposition?

  86. Especially when you're so near to the end.

  87. You're ramping up, and then you pause, and you insert this section.

  88. So to understand this question,

  89. we need to see one more point about this particular section of Scripture

  90. in our text this morning that stands out.

  91. So our text, verses 11 through 14,

  92. offer the only rebuke in the book of Hebrews.

  93. Now as I was discussing this with Nathan yesterday,

  94. I was like, I think this is the only rebuke.

  95. And he was like, I'm not sure.

  96. Let's double check it.

  97. So I double checked it.

  98. And this is the only rebuke.

  99. There are plenty of other warnings.

  100. There are heavy warnings, which we'll look at in a second.

  101. Serious ones that we need to take seriously.

  102. But this is the only charge that he brings against the church.

  103. And like I said, there are plenty of serious and heavy warnings issued along the way.

  104. And I want to look at some of these warnings,

  105. because he gives some heavy warnings,

  106. and yet only one rebuke.

  107. So that says something about the rebuke.

  108. So you don't have to follow along.

  109. You're welcome to if you want to.

  110. But like in chapter 2, verse 1, he says,

  111. we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard,

  112. lest we drift away from it.

  113. Chapter 4, verse 1,

  114. let us fear lest any should fail to reach God's rest

  115. because of disobedience or unbelief.

  116. Or 10, 26,

  117. if we go on sinning deliberately,

  118. after receiving the knowledge of truth,

  119. there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins.

  120. Followed by, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  121. Or lastly, in chapter 12, verse 25,

  122. see that you do not refuse Him, God, who is speaking,

  123. ending with,

  124. for our God is a consuming fire.

  125. Now, these are serious warnings.

  126. This is heavy.

  127. He goes on, I mean,

  128. he's warning them not to drift away,

  129. not to fall away from the faith,

  130. not to fall into the hands of a living God.

  131. And I point these things out to say

  132. that an author who feels the need over and over

  133. to warn these Hebrews to fear and to take heed,

  134. to be careful and diligent,

  135. issues but one rebuke in the text.

  136. So this tells us two things.

  137. Firstly, we really need to understand this text.

  138. And secondly,

  139. he probably placed this passage where he did,

  140. in the middle of a greater exposition,

  141. to grab his reader's attention.

  142. So before we move into the next body of text,

  143. I need to zoom in a bit

  144. and point out one last clue in our text,

  145. which indicates the role of this section

  146. from 5.11 to 6.12.

  147. So, if you'll flip back to chapter 5,

  148. we'll sit there for a minute.

  149. So, verse 11 in our text,

  150. the beginning of it reads,

  151. Now, many commentators read this verse

  152. and believe the this and about this

  153. brings the focus back to what he has previously been discussing,

  154. Christ as the eternal salvation

  155. and throws in there after the order

  156. or the priesthood order of Melchizedek.

  157. And so it seems when you read the English translation,

  158. the NASB actually translates this

  159. about him,

  160. there is much to say.

  161. And I want to point out something

  162. that Nathan's pointed out a couple of times,

  163. that in Hebrews,

  164. the author is writing in the highest form

  165. of the Greek language,

  166. far higher than the rest of the New Testament.

  167. And so it gives some translation issues

  168. because normally in translation,

  169. you're able to see,

  170. oh yeah, this word is used in this way,

  171. in these different contexts.

  172. But there's a lot of words

  173. and idioms and phrases

  174. in the Greek

  175. that are only used once

  176. or maybe twice

  177. in the whole New Testament.

  178. And so sometimes it becomes difficult

  179. to point out

  180. or to pin down

  181. exactly what the author

  182. is trying to say.

  183. So this is a good example

  184. of how we can miss an important point

  185. if we're not careful.

  186. And I'm by no means a Greek scholar,

  187. but I've read a couple.

  188. And so I want to be careful

  189. with this particular phrase.

  190. So this phrase

  191. in the beginning of verse 11

  192. is a Greek idiom

  193. commonly used by orators

  194. to serve a particular purpose.

  195. And it's probably better translated

  196. about these things

  197. we have much to say.

  198. Because that's how other Greek writers

  199. would use this phrase.

  200. They would say,

  201. about these things

  202. we have much to say.

  203. So William Lane

  204. in his commentary,

  205. which I'll be referencing

  206. a couple of times,

  207. demonstrates that speakers

  208. would use this particular phrase

  209. to get their listeners

  210. to perk up

  211. because they were about

  212. to make their main driving point.

  213. It's a phrase

  214. they would be speaking

  215. about something

  216. and right before

  217. they're about to get

  218. to the driving point

  219. in their argument,

  220. they would use this phrase.

  221. About these things

  222. we have much to say.

  223. So then our author

  224. was not on a roll

  225. and then randomly decides

  226. to drop in a rebuke

  227. that points backwards,

  228. lamenting the fact

  229. that further teaching

  230. cannot be given.

  231. Rather,

  232. as he picks up steam

  233. and is about to make

  234. his most important point,

  235. he pauses.

  236. He perks up his audience's ears

  237. to buckle up

  238. and issues then

  239. the only rebuke

  240. in this treatise

  241. that they're being lazy

  242. in their hearing.

  243. He then goes on

  244. to reveal,

  245. or to, sorry,

  246. revel in the glory of Christ

  247. as the perfect high priest

  248. and perfect,

  249. all-sufficient sacrifice

  250. for his people.

  251. Okay,

  252. so we understand

  253. the purpose

  254. of this greater section,

  255. to look forward

  256. to what's about to happen.

  257. Now we need to understand

  258. this rebuke.

  259. So,

  260. my three points.

  261. In our text this morning,

  262. we'll see

  263. point number A,

  264. the call to hear,

  265. the call to hear well.

  266. Point B,

  267. the call to teach

  268. in verse 12,

  269. the first part of verse 12.

  270. And thirdly,

  271. point C,

  272. the call to grow

  273. 12B,

  274. through the end

  275. of our text

  276. in verse 14.

  277. And I'll repeat

  278. those as we go.

  279. So,

  280. first of all,

  281. point A,

  282. the call to hear

  283. or the call to hear well.

  284. So,

  285. if you think about this text

  286. for like three seconds,

  287. then you know

  288. that the writer

  289. is not claiming

  290. that the Hebrews

  291. get their ears checked.

  292. But something is wrong

  293. with the way

  294. that they are hearing

  295. or the way

  296. that they are perceiving.

  297. So,

  298. to understand

  299. what the author

  300. is trying to rebuke

  301. the Hebrews for

  302. and therefore

  303. warn us against,

  304. we must dive a bit deeper

  305. into the concept of hearing

  306. as it's used

  307. throughout the scriptures.

  308. And as we do so,

  309. we'll see that

  310. this accusation

  311. of being dull

  312. or sluggish,

  313. lazy in hearing

  314. is not merely

  315. an encouragement

  316. to pay attention

  317. or to take notes

  318. during a sermon.

  319. Not a bad idea.

  320. Nor is it a call

  321. to listen

  322. for special revelation

  323. in your prayer closet,

  324. but is a sharp rebuke

  325. against idolatry

  326. and a call

  327. to turn away

  328. from disobedience.

  329. So,

  330. hearing

  331. or the inability

  332. to hear

  333. is associated

  334. with a few

  335. key concepts

  336. both in the Old

  337. and New Testaments.

  338. So,

  339. first of all,

  340. a failure to hear

  341. is associated

  342. with idolatry.

  343. So,

  344. failure to hear

  345. is associated

  346. with idolatry.

  347. If you will,

  348. please turn with me

  349. to Psalm 115.

  350. Psalm 115.

  351. Now read verses 1-9.

  352. He says,

  353. Not to us, O Lord,

  354. not to us,

  355. but to your name

  356. give glory.

  357. For the sake

  358. of your steadfast love

  359. and your faithfulness.

  360. Why should the nation

  361. say,

  362. where is their God?

  363. Our God is in the heavens.

  364. He does all

  365. that He pleases.

  366. Their idols

  367. are silver and gold,

  368. the work of human hands.

  369. They have mouths,

  370. but do not speak.

  371. Eyes,

  372. but do not see.

  373. They have ears,

  374. but do not hear.

  375. Noses,

  376. but do not smell.

  377. Hands,

  378. but do not feel.

  379. Feet,

  380. but do not walk.

  381. And they do not make

  382. a sound in their throat.

  383. Those who make them

  384. become like them.

  385. And so do all

  386. who trust in them.

  387. O Israel,

  388. trust in the Lord.

  389. He is their help

  390. and their shield.

  391. So,

  392. based off this passage,

  393. we see that every object

  394. created has a purpose.

  395. And its worth

  396. to its creator

  397. is derived

  398. from its ability

  399. to fulfill the purpose

  400. for which it was created.

  401. So the mouth

  402. is created to speak,

  403. yet it's silence

  404. on the grave and idle,

  405. and it is therefore

  406. worthless.

  407. And so are we.

  408. If the measure

  409. of our worth

  410. as a creature

  411. is in fulfilling

  412. the purpose

  413. for which we are created,

  414. so are we,

  415. as we trust in things

  416. to satisfy,

  417. as we trust in idols

  418. to do what only God

  419. can do.

  420. When we're created

  421. for the specific purpose,

  422. to worship God

  423. and to be satisfied

  424. in Him,

  425. and then to bring Him glory

  426. by teaching others

  427. to do the same.

  428. Calvin famously

  429. once proclaimed

  430. that the human heart

  431. is a perpetual factory

  432. of idols.

  433. And if this is the case,

  434. we must seriously

  435. guard against idols

  436. taking the affection,

  437. the treasuring,

  438. the time,

  439. the energy,

  440. and the mental capacity

  441. that we devote

  442. to things,

  443. to people,

  444. to relationship,

  445. to status,

  446. that only belong

  447. to our Lord

  448. as the one

  449. who can satisfy.

  450. So what idols

  451. are you trusting in today

  452. that you need

  453. to cast aside

  454. so that you may hear

  455. as you ought to hear?

  456. Secondly,

  457. hearing is associated

  458. with understanding

  459. the things of God.

  460. So in the New Testament,

  461. our Lord often

  462. ended His parables

  463. and other sections

  464. of teaching

  465. with the phrase,

  466. those who have ears

  467. to hear,

  468. let them hear.

  469. He explains this concept

  470. to His disciples

  471. more clearly

  472. in Matthew chapter 13

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  473. when they're asking

  474. why He speaks

  475. cryptically

  476. to the people

  477. in parables.

  478. So if you will,

  479. please turn again

  480. with me

  481. one of the last places

  482. to Matthew chapter 13.

    Matthew 13 chapter mention

  483. starting in verse 10.

  484. And again,

  485. oh yeah,

  486. it says in the text.

  487. Never mind.

  488. So in verse 10,

  489. it reads,

  490. Then the disciples

  491. came and said to Him,

  492. Why do you speak

  493. to them in parables?

  494. And He answered them,

  495. To you

  496. it has been given

  497. to know the secrets

  498. of the kingdom of heaven.

  499. But to them

  500. it has not been given.

  501. For to the one who has

  502. more will be given

  503. and he will have

  504. an abundance.

  505. But from the one

  506. who has not,

  507. even what he has

  508. will be taken away.

  509. This is why

  510. I speak to them

  511. in parables.

  512. Because seeing

  513. they do not see,

  514. and hearing

  515. they do not hear,

  516. nor do they understand.

  517. Indeed,

  518. in their case,

  519. the prophecy of Isaiah

  520. is fulfilled that says,

  521. and this is from Isaiah 6,

  522. You will indeed hear

  523. but never understand,

  524. and you will indeed see

  525. but never perceive.

  526. For this people's heart

  527. has grown dull,

  528. and with their ears

  529. they can barely hear,

  530. and their eyes

  531. have been closed,

  532. lest they should see

  533. with their eyes,

  534. hear with their hearts,

  535. hear with their ears,

  536. understand with their heart,

  537. and turn,

  538. and I would heal them.

  539. But blessed are your eyes

  540. for they see,

  541. and your ears

  542. for they hear.

  543. So Christ makes

  544. an important point

  545. that two people

  546. can hear the same teaching

  547. or the same information

  548. about the kingdom of God.

  549. One understands,

  550. and the other

  551. doesn't understand,

  552. because one has

  553. or has been given

  554. the ears to hear,

  555. and the other doesn't.

  556. So this can lead us

  557. to question God's authority,

  558. or it can well up

  559. in us

  560. in expressible gratitude.

  561. What a joy

  562. that we have,

  563. that we've been given

  564. to know the secrets

  565. of the kingdom of God.

  566. This is a privilege

  567. not to be squandered.

  568. If you can perceive

  569. the secrets of the kingdom,

  570. by all means,

  571. pursue them.

  572. Those who have ears to hear,

  573. let them hear,

  574. and let them hear

  575. abundantly.

  576. And lastly,

  577. hearing is equated,

  578. not merely associated,

  579. but equated

  580. with obedience.

  581. It's the third sub-point,

  582. hearing equated

  583. with obedience.

  584. So this concept

  585. is especially clear

  586. in the Old Testament

  587. because of the word

  588. used for hear

  589. in ancient Hebrew.

  590. And there's actually

  591. an awesome Bible project

  592. video on this word,

  593. the Shema.

  594. There's a whole series

  595. on this text

  596. in Deuteronomy,

    Deuteronomy 6:4–5

  597. chapter 6,

  598. verses 4 through 5,

  599. called the Shema,

  600. which we'll talk about

  601. a little bit.

  602. But it's this word,

  603. Shema,

  604. which is translated here.

  605. So in the Greek,

  606. and obviously in the English,

  607. there are two different words

  608. for hear,

  609. something that you do

  610. involuntarily with your ears,

  611. and obey,

  612. something that you do

  613. with your will,

  614. affection,

  615. and action.

  616. However,

  617. fascinatingly,

  618. in Hebrew,

  619. they're the same word,

  620. Shema.

  621. So listen to a few examples.

  622. Deuteronomy 5.1,

  623. this is the Ten Commandments,

  624. says,

  625. And Moses summoned all Israel

  626. and said to them,

  627. Hear, Shema,

  628. O Israel,

  629. the statutes and the rules

  630. that I speak in your hearing today,

  631. and you shall learn them

  632. and be careful to do,

  633. Shema,

  634. them.

  635. Deuteronomy 6.4-5,

  636. which is again,

  637. the Shema.

  638. Hear,

  639. Shema,

  640. O Israel,

  641. the Lord your God,

  642. the Lord is one.

  643. You shall love the Lord your God

  644. with all your heart,

  645. with all your soul,

  646. and with all your might.

  647. And then in Exodus 19.5,

  648. Now therefore,

  649. if you will indeed obey,

  650. Shema,

  651. my voice,

  652. and keep,

  653. Shema,

  654. my covenant,

  655. you shall be my treasured possession

  656. among all peoples,

  657. for the earth is mine.

  658. So then to be dull in hearing

  659. is to be sluggish or lazy

  660. in obeying the knowledge

  661. that we have received.

  662. So the degree to which you hear

  663. is then the degree to which

  664. you respect the authority

  665. of the one speaking.

  666. So let's unpack that a little bit.

  667. Because when you respect

  668. the speaker's authority,

  669. you don't merely take in

  670. the information,

  671. but you do so in such a way

  672. that it produces the action

  673. intended in the hearer

  674. from the one who's communicating it.

  675. So I'll say that again.

  676. When you respect the speaker's authority,

  677. you don't merely take in information,

  678. but do so in such a way

  679. that it produces the action

  680. intended in the hearer

  681. from the one communicating it.

  682. So there's a responsibility

  683. that comes with the way

  684. that we are to hear.

  685. There's a responsibility

  686. with how we hear the word of God,

  687. and the degree to which

  688. we are truly hearing

  689. is the degree to which

  690. we respect God's authority,

  691. which is also the degree

  692. to which we obey the word

  693. that has been spoken.

  694. So I have maybe a silly example

  695. that I think will help

  696. illustrate this point.

  697. And if my mom were here today,

  698. she would attest to the truth

  699. of this story.

  700. So I had good parents,

  701. which means that I had chores

  702. growing up.

  703. And when I was seven, eight, nine-ish years old,

  704. one of my chores,

  705. least favorite chores,

  706. was cleaning the bathroom.

  707. And as an eight-year-old boy,

  708. like most eight-year-old boys,

  709. I wasn't too concerned

  710. with the details

  711. of what it meant

  712. to clean the bathroom.

  713. So when mom says,

  714. clean the bathroom,

  715. what I take that to mean is,

  716. make the bathroom look clean,

  717. which are two different things.

  718. And if you've ever cleaned a bathroom,

  719. you know the difference.

  720. Make the bathroom look clean

  721. means when you walk into it,

  722. do you think,

  723. oh yeah,

  724. this is a pretty clean bathroom.

  725. But clean the bathroom

  726. is like getting the mildew

  727. out from under the ring

  728. in the sink,

  729. or scrubbing the shower floor

  730. so that it's as white

  731. as the walls.

  732. And so there's a difference

  733. in the way that I'm hearing

  734. as an eight-year-old boy.

  735. And so you get that picture

  736. in your mind,

  737. but then imagine that

  738. as an eight-year-old boy,

  739. I'm playing Donkey Kong Country

  740. on my Super Nintendo,

  741. and mom walks in,

  742. and she says,

  743. okay,

  744. it's time to clean the bathroom.

  745. And I say,

  746. yeah, yeah,

  747. okay,

  748. I'll clean the bathroom.

  749. And then she's explaining

  750. what exactly she wants me to do.

  751. And instead of asking the question,

  752. okay,

  753. is this the deep cleaning,

  754. or is this like

  755. make the bathroom look clean

  756. because guests are coming over,

  757. which is instead of asking that,

  758. I just keep playing my video games.

  759. And she says,

  760. okay,

  761. clean the bathroom.

  762. And I'm like,

  763. yeah,

  764. yeah,

  765. okay,

  766. I'll get to it.

  767. Just give me a second.

  768. And then she's like,

  769. no,

  770. I want you to listen

  771. to what I'm saying.

  772. And I'm still playing the game.

  773. Haven't paused it or anything.

  774. I don't know if you can pause

  775. Donkey Kong Country,

  776. but I haven't paused it.

  777. And she's still saying,

  778. no,

  779. I want you to like

  780. really deep clean it,

  781. get under,

  782. you know,

  783. the ring in the sink

  784. and get behind the toilet

  785. to whatever mess is back there

  786. and all these other things.

  787. And if I'm still paying attention

  788. to the video game

  789. that's in front of me,

  790. then while I may be

  791. receiving the information

  792. in one way,

  793. I'm not heeding it.

  794. And I'm certainly

  795. not going to transfer that

  796. into the action intended

  797. of the one who's speaking

  798. because my attention

  799. is elsewhere.

  800. What she really wants me to do

  801. when she says,

  802. clean the bathroom,

  803. is pause,

  804. put it down,

  805. look her in the eyes

  806. and ask,

  807. what do you mean?

  808. And to say,

  809. do you want me

  810. to do a deep cleaning?

  811. Do you want me

  812. to get the mildew

  813. or is this just

  814. a shallow cleaning?

  815. Right?

  816. And so she wants my attention

  817. as she's telling me something.

  818. And even though I may feel like

  819. as an eight-year-old boy

  820. that I know what she means,

  821. that assumption

  822. can be dangerous

  823. and it can lead

  824. to disobedience.

  825. Right?

  826. And so it is often

  827. as we approach

  828. the Word of God,

  829. our attention

  830. is elsewhere.

  831. We're not really engaged.

  832. We think we know

  833. what we ought to be doing,

  834. but we're making

  835. a dangerous assumption

  836. when we do so

  837. because we may not

  838. be hearing

  839. as He

  840. has intended us

  841. to hear.

  842. So we interpret

  843. what God is saying

  844. to our advantage

  845. or in accordance

  846. to what we already

  847. want to hear,

  848. seeking to do

  849. the minimum required effort

  850. to count

  851. for obedience.

  852. So often in the Christian life,

  853. the problem is not

  854. that we don't have

  855. the right information,

  856. but it's that we've forgotten

  857. the God who has spoken

  858. the information to us.

  859. We hear,

  860. but we don't heed

  861. and obey.

  862. So to not be dull

  863. of hearing then

  864. is to consume the Word

  865. in such a way

  866. that it produces

  867. obedience.

  868. So again,

  869. the responsibility

  870. in your hearing

  871. of the Word of God,

  872. whether that's you

  873. listening here today

  874. or in your personal time,

  875. is to see how it's supposed

  876. to be working out of you,

  877. how it's supposed

  878. to be applied to your life,

  879. how you are to obey.

  880. And this isn't something

  881. that can be done

  882. quickly

  883. or with

  884. half of a brain,

  885. but you have to be

  886. engaged.

  887. So according to our

  888. three observations

  889. about hearing in the Bible,

  890. to not be dull

  891. of hearing,

  892. we must be free

  893. from idols,

  894. able to understand

  895. or perceive

  896. the things of God,

  897. and must take it

  898. in in such a way

  899. that it produces

  900. the action

  901. that it commands,

  902. that He commands.

  903. Therefore,

  904. the author's rebuke

  905. back in Hebrews

  906. of being lazy

  907. or sluggish

  908. or dull

  909. of hearing

  910. on the part

  911. of the Jewish believers

  912. carries a great deal

  913. of weight,

  914. directly related

  915. to the way

  916. that they are

  917. respecting

  918. the authority

  919. and the supremacy

  920. of God,

  921. which is why

  922. it makes sense

  923. that the author's thesis,

  924. if this is a dull

  925. of hearing people,

  926. is Christ the supreme

  927. over all.

  928. As they see

  929. Christ the supreme,

  930. they begin

  931. to pay attention,

  932. they begin to hear

  933. as they ought to hear.

  934. So we should fear

  935. this spiritual condition.

  936. With all the warnings

  937. that were given,

  938. this is the rebuke.

  939. We should fear

  940. having this spiritual

  941. condition for ourselves

  942. and yet many

  943. in our country,

  944. our county,

  945. and maybe in our midst

  946. have likely

  947. grown accustomed

  948. to it.

  949. We read

  950. and we hear

  951. the commands

  952. of Scripture

  953. and we feel

  954. conviction in the moment,

  955. yet we lose focus

  956. a few hours later

  957. when the next wave

  958. of distraction hits.

  959. We know we're commanded

  960. to read

  961. and to pray regularly,

  962. to grow deep

  963. in relationship

  964. with believers,

  965. to get accountability,

  966. that we tell ourselves

  967. we don't know

  968. where to start,

  969. that we don't have

  970. the time to commit,

  971. that we're too busy

  972. and we don't know

  973. where to start.

  974. We're often prideful

  975. about our appearance,

  976. too prideful

  977. to break down

  978. and ask for help.

  979. Or maybe you felt

  980. conviction for years

  981. to talk to a co-worker

  982. or a neighbor

  983. about the Lord

  984. that haven't made

  985. the sacrifice

  986. of an evening

  987. with your family

  988. to be hospitable

  989. to your neighbors

  990. as the Lord

  991. is hospitable to you.

  992. Instead of trusting

  993. that God has commanded

  994. that which is best

  995. for our flourishing,

  996. spiritually or otherwise,

  997. we buy into the lie

  998. that whatever feels best

  999. to us

  1000. should guide the decisions

  1001. that we make.

  1002. We judge the worthiness

1003. of the command of God

  1004. in our lives

1005. based off of the temporary

  1006. satisfaction and joy

  1007. that it brings

  1008. rather than trusting

  1009. that He has spoken,

1010. that we are His creatures

1011. and that He designed us

  1012. specifically

  1013. for His purpose.

  1014. When we don't get

  1015. emotional satisfaction

  1016. from obeying these commands,

1017. we must see that the problem

  1018. is with our emotions.

1019. Sometimes we need to obey

1020. because He has said so

  1021. and allow our emotions

  1022. to catch up

1023. as we trust our great Lord.

  1024. As we've seen,

1025. this rebuke of sluggish hearing

1026. is not merely a call

1027. to perk up and listen,

1028. but is meant to be

  1029. a serious wake-up call,

  1030. both for them

  1031. and for us.

  1032. So the Hebrews, too,

  1033. had the necessary information,

  1034. but they weren't applying

  1035. what they had learned,

  1036. and therefore

  1037. they could not mature

  1038. or bring others

  1039. into maturity

  1040. in their walk

  1041. with the Lord.

  1042. And this brings us

  1043. to our second point,

  1044. answering how the Hebrews

  1045. failed to hear

  1046. as they ought

  1047. the call to teach.

  1048. So,

  1049. point B,

  1050. the call to teach.

  1051. This is in

  1052. verse 12.

1053. So if you're not back

  1054. in Hebrews,

  1055. please flip there again.

  1056. So verse 12.

1057. For though by this time

1058. you ought to be teachers,

  1059. you need someone

  1060. to teach you again

  1061. the basic principles

1062. of the oracles of God.

  1063. You need milk,

  1064. excuse me,

  1065. not solid food.

  1066. So,

  1067. very simply,

  1068. note the word for

  1069. at the beginning

  1070. of verse 12.

  1071. It would seem

  1072. to this author

  1073. the first indicator

  1074. that he points out

  1075. in the Hebrew

  1076. sluggish hearing

  1077. is not an understanding

  1078. but rather an action.

1079. They were dull of hearing

  1080. because they weren't

  1081. yet teaching others.

  1082. Get that logic flow.

  1083. It's not that

  1084. they didn't understand

  1085. that they were

  1086. supposed to be teachers

  1087. given the sharpness

  1088. of this rebuke,

  1089. but it is that

  1090. they weren't applying

  1091. what they knew

1092. they ought to be doing.

  1093. So,

  1094. hear this clearly

  1095. this morning.

  1096. Believers are meant

  1097. to be teachers.

  1098. All of us.

  1099. There's not something

  1100. reserved for

  1101. ordained clergy,

  1102. for missionaries,

  1103. or for people

  1104. on stage.

  1105. And while teaching

  1106. may seem like

  1107. a daunting task,

1108. it can take many forms,

  1109. most of which

  1110. have nothing to do

  1111. with standing

  1112. behind a lectern

  1113. and speaking publicly,

  1114. and all of which

  1115. are essential

  1116. to the life

  1117. of the church.

  1118. Many find themselves

  1119. wondering what their

1120. place in the church is.

  1121. Some of you here

  1122. likely feel that way.

  1123. While each of us

  1124. have different gifts

  1125. and will certainly

  1126. exercise them

  1127. in different ways,

  1128. we are all meant

  1129. to teach

  1130. in some way.

  1131. So,

  1132. I want to look

  1133. at a couple

  1134. of ways

  1135. in Scripture

  1136. that we're

  1137. called to teach

  1138. one another

  1139. and those outside

  1140. of the congregation

  1141. really quickly.

  1142. I don't think

  1143. I want you guys

  1144. to turn anywhere

  1145. maybe to Matthew 28

1146. if you want to move

  1147. in that direction.

  1148. So,

  1149. first way that

  1150. each believer

  1151. is called to teach

  1152. is through

  1153. rebuking,

  1154. admonishing,

  1155. and or counseling.

  1156. So,

  1157. Paul writes

  1158. in Colossians 3

  1159. to the church

  1160. at Colossae,

  1161. let the word

  1162. of Christ

  1163. dwell in you

  1164. richly.

  1165. How?

  1166. Teaching and

  1167. admonishing

  1168. one another

  1169. in all wisdom.

  1170. So,

  1171. teaching and

  1172. admonishing,

  1173. which is like

  1174. a soft rebuke

  1175. or correction

  1176. in instruction.

  1177. Secondly,

  1178. in encouraging

  1179. each other.

  1180. First Thessalonians

  1181. 5,

  1182. 14,

  1183. we urge you,

  1184. brothers,

  1185. admonish the idle,

  1186. encourage the faint-hearted,

  1187. help the weak,

  1188. and be patient

  1189. with them all.

  1190. Again,

  1191. written to

  1192. the church.

  1193. Thirdly,

  1194. in discipling,

  1195. and that takes

  1196. so many different forms,

  1197. but one example,

  1198. a good one,

  1199. in 2 Timothy 2,

  1200. chapter 2,

  1201. Paul shows

  1202. four generations

  1203. of discipleship.

  1204. As he writes

  1205. to Timothy,

  1206. he says,

  1207. what you have heard

  1208. from me

  1209. in the presence

  1210. of many witnesses,

  1211. entrust to faithful men

  1212. who will be able

  1213. to teach others also.

  1214. So,

  1215. Paul is teaching

  1216. Timothy.

  1217. Timothy is

  1218. entrusting

  1219. this information

  1220. to faithful men

  1221. who will then

  1222. be able

  1223. to teach others.

  1224. It's meant to be

  1225. this family tree

  1226. of believers

  1227. teaching,

  1228. discipling

  1229. one another.

  1230. And then,

1231. if you'll turn with me

  1232. to Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18

  1233. verse 18.

1234. This is the Great Commission.

  1235. And I understand

  1236. we've probably heard

  1237. all these things before.

1238. If you've been around here,

  1239. you have.

  1240. And you've probably

  1241. heard these things before

  1242. in your own churches,

1243. but I fear that oftentimes

  1244. they're taught

  1245. as suggestions,

  1246. things that are

  1247. like beneficial

1248. if you want to be

  1249. a deep Christian.

  1250. But note that

  1251. the rebuke

  1252. that's here

  1253. is not given

  1254. to the deep Christians,

  1255. but it's given

  1256. to the believers.

  1257. They're being sharply

  1258. rebuked

  1259. for not hearing

1260. as they ought to hear.

  1261. So,

  1262. I encourage you

  1263. now,

  1264. hear this

1265. as you ought to hear it.

  1266. We're all meant

  1267. to be teachers.

  1268. So,

  1269. the Great Commission,

  1270. Matthew 28,

  1271. starting in verse 18.

  1272. Jesus came to them

  1273. and said to them,

  1274. His disciples,

  1275. All authority in heaven

  1276. and on earth

1277. has been given to Me.

  1278. Go, therefore,

  1279. and make disciples

  1280. of all nations,

  1281. baptizing them

1282. in the name of the Father

  1283. and of the Son

1284. and of the Holy Spirit,

  1285. teaching them to observe

1286. all that I've commanded you.

  1287. And behold,

1288. I am with you always

1289. to the ends of the age.

  1290. So,

1291. first thing to point out,

  1292. that it says

  1293. make disciples

  1294. of all nations.

  1295. It's not making converts

  1296. of all nations.

  1297. Converts are important.

  1298. That's the first step

  1299. in discipleship,

1300. but it doesn't stop there

1301. if we're going to mature

  1302. to the end.

  1303. Secondly,

  1304. Jesus Himself

  1305. took three years

  1306. of living

  1307. with His disciples

  1308. to teach them.

  1309. Living with them.

  1310. He's teaching them.

  1311. He's discipling them.

  1312. How much more

  1313. does it take

  1314. relationship with others

  1315. as imperfect teachers,

  1316. us,

  1317. to do the same?

  1318. Also,

  1319. note that

1320. the task at hand here

  1321. is not simply

  1322. to teach

  1323. all that Jesus commanded,

  1324. while that is

  1325. a daunting task

  1326. in and of itself,

  1327. but He says

  1328. teach them to observe

  1329. or to obey

  1330. all that I've commanded.

1331. And this takes a lot.

  1332. It takes devotion,

  1333. relationship,

  1334. love,

  1335. counsel,

  1336. and yes,

  1337. it takes teaching.

  1338. Now,

  1339. of course,

1340. the power to do this

  1341. is not in ourselves,

  1342. right?

  1343. We know

  1344. that the Spirit

  1345. has to work

  1346. in the lives

  1347. of others

  1348. to do it,

  1349. but God

  1350. works through

  1351. His people

  1352. to accomplish

  1353. His purposes.

  1354. He doesn't need us

  1355. to do this,

  1356. but He has chosen

  1357. to invite us

  1358. into the work

  1359. that He's doing

  1360. in this world,

  1361. so He calls us

  1362. to teach.

  1363. Fourthly,

  1364. we teach

  1365. through personal evangelism.

  1366. You can listen

  1367. to this one.

  1368. 2 Corinthians 2,

  1369. 15-17 says,

  1370. We're the aroma

  1371. of Christ to God

  1372. among those

  1373. who are being saved

  1374. and among those

  1375. who are perishing.

  1376. To one,

  1377. a fragrance

  1378. from death to death,

  1379. to the other,

  1380. a fragrance

  1381. from life to life.

  1382. Who is sufficient

  1383. for these things?

  1384. For we are not

  1385. like so many

  1386. peddlers

  1387. of God's Word,

  1388. but as men

  1389. of sincerity

  1390. as commissioned

  1391. by God

  1392. in the sight

  1393. of God,

  1394. we speak

  1395. in Christ.

  1396. So it flows

  1397. out of us.

  1398. We speak

  1399. in Christ,

  1400. commissioned

  1401. by God

  1402. in the sight

  1403. of God

  1404. to believers

  1405. and to unbelievers.

  1406. And lastly,

  1407. a way,

  1408. these aren't

  1409. necessarily all the ways,

  1410. but a way

  1411. that we teach

  1412. is through parenting.

  1413. So I quoted

  1414. earlier from

  1415. the Shema

  1416. in Deuteronomy 6,

  1417. 4-5,

1418. and I'd like to read

  1419. that again

  1420. and go on

  1421. through verse 9

  1422. to demonstrate

  1423. this point.

  1424. You're welcome

  1425. to turn there.

  1426. You don't have to.

  1427. Pretty straightforward.

  1428. It says,

  1429. Deuteronomy 6,

  1430. starting in verse 4,

  1431. Hear, O Israel,

  1432. the Lord,

  1433. our God,

  1434. the Lord is one.

  1435. You shall love

  1436. the Lord your God

  1437. with all your heart,

  1438. with all your soul,

1439. and with all your might.

  1440. And these words

  1441. that I command

  1442. to you today

  1443. shall be

  1444. on your heart.

  1445. You shall teach them

  1446. diligently to your children

  1447. and talk of them

1448. when you sit in your house

  1449. and when you walk

  1450. by the way

1451. and when you lie down

  1452. and when you rise.

  1453. You shall bind them

1454. as a sign on your hand

  1455. and they shall be

  1456. as frontlets

  1457. between your eyes.

  1458. You shall write them

  1459. on the doorposts

  1460. of your house

  1461. and on your gates.

  1462. Each of the above,

  1463. rebuking,

  1464. admonishing,

  1465. encouraging,

  1466. counseling,

  1467. preaching,

  1468. evangelizing,

  1469. and discipling

  1470. are first and foremost

  1471. to be done

  1472. with our kids,

1473. those in our immediate context.

1474. And as God teaches here

  1475. through Moses,

  1476. teaching isn't merely

  1477. an event.

  1478. It's not that you're moving

  1479. from one teaching event

1480. to the next teaching event,

  1481. but it's something

1482. that happens on the way

  1483. as you're going.

1484. And to get to this point,

  1485. you've got to believe

  1486. it first.

  1487. We read earlier

  1488. in 2 Corinthians 2

  1489. that we are not

  1490. peddlers,

  1491. but we are those

  1492. who are men

  1493. of sincerity,

  1494. which means

  1495. we've got to believe

  1496. it for ourselves.

1497. We've got to hear it

  1498. right first,

  1499. and then we're able

  1500. to teach it

  1501. to others.

  1502. So God's people

  1503. were always meant

  1504. to be teaching people

  1505. in this way.

  1506. Israel,

1507. a light to the nations

  1508. around them,

  1509. and now the church,

1510. a light to one another

  1511. and to the world

  1512. around us.

  1513. The salvation

  1514. that you have

  1515. been given

  1516. was not merely

  1517. for you to know

  1518. and to enjoy God,

1519. but for you to become

  1520. the means by which

1521. God works in the lives

  1522. of others.

  1523. As we often say,

  1524. God doesn't need us

  1525. to accomplish this work,

  1526. but has chosen

  1527. to use this

1528. as the way for others

  1529. to learn about

  1530. who He is

1531. and what He has done

  1532. in creating the world

  1533. and saving the people

  1534. for His own possession

  1535. that He might dwell

  1536. with them forever.

  1537. So how are you

  1538. teaching the people

  1539. around you?

1540. Do you meet with someone

  1541. in the church

  1542. on a regular basis,

  1543. both to teach

  1544. and to be taught

  1545. by sharing your struggles

  1546. and sharing how God

1547. is working with your life?

  1548. Are you seeking

  1549. to build relationships

  1550. with unbelievers

  1551. so you can share

  1552. the good news

  1553. of the gospel?

  1554. Are you intentional

  1555. in your parenting

  1556. and in family worship

  1557. and with conversations

  1558. with family?

  1559. Do you seek

  1560. close enough friendships

  1561. with other believers

1562. so you can speak truth

  1563. into their lives

  1564. that brings encouragement

  1565. or counsel

  1566. or correction

  1567. when needed?

1568. While some of these things

  1569. are certainly easier

1570. in some stages of life

  1571. than others,

1572. I fear that we often

  1573. excuse ourselves

  1574. entirely from our role

  1575. as teachers

  1576. and neglect the work

  1577. God has given us

  1578. in the church

1579. and in the world around us.

  1580. We may fall short

  1581. in this area

  1582. because we haven't

  1583. prioritized it

  1584. in our lives.

  1585. We may fear

  1586. losing social equity

1587. in the eyes of others.

  1588. We may be doubting

  1589. the sufficiency of God

  1590. to work in

  1591. and through you

1592. in the lives of others

  1593. or we may simply

  1594. be too selfish

  1595. with our time.

  1596. Like the Hebrew church,

1597. we may not be teaching

  1598. because we need

  1599. to grow up

  1600. in the cheersome

  1601. in our relationship

  1602. with the Lord.

  1603. So join me

1604. as we look at our

  1605. last main point

  1606. together in the text.

  1607. Point C,

  1608. the call to grow.

1609. Second part of verse 12,

  1610. really looking at 6.1.

1611. So turn back to Hebrews

  1612. if you're not there.

1613. I'll go ahead and read

  1614. verse 11

1615. to get the full picture.

  1616. It says,

  1617. About this we have

  1618. much to say

1619. and it is hard to explain

  1620. since you have become

  1621. dull of hearing.

1622. For though by this time

1623. you ought to be teachers,

  1624. you need someone

  1625. to teach you again

  1626. the basic principles

1627. of the oracles of God.

  1628. You need milk,

  1629. not solid food.

  1630. For everyone who lives

  1631. on milk is unskilled

1632. in the word of righteousness

1633. since he is a child.

  1634. But solid food is

  1635. for the mature,

  1636. for those who have

  1637. their powers of discernment

  1638. trained by constant practice

  1639. to distinguish good

  1640. from evil.

  1641. Therefore,

  1642. let us leave

  1643. the elementary doctrine

  1644. of Christ

1645. and go on to maturity.

  1646. So,

1647. looking at the call to grow,

  1648. I have three more

  1649. sub-points for you

  1650. if you're taking notes.

  1651. First,

1652. and I'll go through these again

  1653. as we're going.

  1654. The Hebrew is growth,

  1655. secondly,

  1656. the assumption of growth,

  1657. generally,

  1658. and thirdly,

  1659. the means of growth.

  1660. So,

  1661. there are a few

  1662. reasonable ways

  1663. to interpret

  1664. this section

  1665. of our text.

  1666. And generally,

  1667. commentators disagree

  1668. on what the nature

  1669. of the Hebrews problem

  1670. is

  1671. and their lack

  1672. of maturity.

  1673. Some believe

  1674. that the author

  1675. is addressing unbelievers

1676. who have made their way

  1677. into the church,

  1678. here from verse 11

  1679. through chapter 6-8,

  1680. and then changes audiences,

  1681. transitioning back

1682. to speaking to true believers.

  1683. Secondly,

  1684. and more commonly,

  1685. some read this text

  1686. like the author

  1687. as saying

  1688. that the Hebrews

  1689. had believed the gospel

  1690. but had basically

  1691. stagnated at that point.

  1692. According to this reading,

  1693. the appropriate response

  1694. would then be

  1695. to go over

  1696. the basic truths

  1697. of the gospel

  1698. and to feed them

  1699. spiritual milk.

  1700. But this isn't really

  1701. what the author does.

  1702. While these readings

  1703. are possible,

  1704. based off of the

  1705. surrounding verses

  1706. and the general context

  1707. of the Hebrew church,

  1708. some of which

  1709. we've touched on,

  1710. I believe the most

  1711. reasonable approach

  1712. to understanding the text

  1713. goes something like this.

1714. Though you should be teachers

  1715. and are ready

  1716. for solid food,

  1717. you have begun

  1718. to live as infants

  1719. in need of milk.

  1720. So instead of seeing

  1721. Hebrews

  1722. as the Hebrews

  1723. as having never matured,

  1724. I believe the text

  1725. and surrounding context

  1726. supports the position

  1727. that they have deviated

  1728. from the initial course

  1729. that they were on

1730. and have four basic reasons

1731. for why that's the case

  1732. really quickly.

  1733. So firstly,

  1734. as we said,

  1735. the author responds

  1736. with solid food

  1737. and not milk.

  1738. Commentator William Lane

  1739. mentioned earlier

  1740. points,

  1741. puts it this way.

  1742. He says,

  1743. it is commonly assumed

  1744. on the basis

  1745. of this passage

  1746. that the community

  1747. addressed

  1748. had failed to mature

  1749. in faith and understanding

  1750. and consequently

  1751. required rudimentary

  1752. instruction

  1753. rather than

  1754. the advanced

  1755. exposition

  1756. of Christ's priesthood

  1757. and sacrifice

  1758. presented in the rest

  1759. of the sermon.

  1760. The problem

  1761. with this reconstruction

  1762. of the situation

1763. is that it is not

  1764. supported by the detail

  1765. of the text.

  1766. The author presupposes

  1767. advanced Christian instruction

  1768. and shows no inclination

1769. to review with his hearers

  1770. the foundational elements

  1771. of the Christian faith.

  1772. So,

  1773. in other words,

1774. if they really needed milk,

  1775. if he's literally saying,

  1776. this is kind of

1777. where you guys are at,

  1778. then why doesn't

1779. he give it to them?

  1780. He responds

  1781. with solid food.

  1782. He's been giving them

  1783. solid food so far,

  1784. and then continues

  1785. to give them

  1786. solid food.

  1787. These are not basics.

  1788. Again,

1789. the highest form of Greek,

1790. he's not giving them milk.

1791. He doesn't take the time

  1792. to walk them through

  1793. the basics

  1794. of the gospel.

  1795. So,

  1796. that's reason one.

  1797. If this is true,

  1798. the problem was not

  1799. with their diet,

  1800. per se,

  1801. but with the digestion

  1802. of the diet.

  1803. They had the information

  1804. they needed,

  1805. but they weren't

  1806. putting it into practice.

  1807. They had become

  1808. dull of hearing,

  1809. but they weren't always.

  1810. Secondly,

  1811. they had already

  1812. demonstrated maturity

  1813. through the endurance

  1814. of suffering.

  1815. So,

1816. he speaks in the past tense

  1817. in Hebrews 10,

  1818. 32-33,

  1819. he says,

  1820. recall the former days

  1821. when after you were

  1822. enlightened,

  1823. you endured a hard

  1824. struggle with sufferings,

  1825. and sometimes being

  1826. publicly exposed

  1827. to reproach

  1828. and affliction,

  1829. and sometimes being

  1830. partners with those

  1831. so treated.

  1832. So,

  1833. they're pretty mature

  1834. if they're able

  1835. not only to suffer

  1836. for their faith,

  1837. but like tie themselves

  1838. to other people

  1839. who are suffering.

  1840. Thirdly,

  1841. they had demonstrated

  1842. maturity through hope

  1843. in a better abiding

  1844. possession,

  1845. being the hope

1846. that they had in Christ.

  1847. So,

  1848. continuing on

  1849. Hebrews 10,

    Hebrews 10:34

  1850. verse 34,

  1851. he says,

  1852. for you had compassion

  1853. on those in prison,

  1854. and you joyfully

  1855. accepted the plundering

  1856. of your property,

  1857. since you knew

  1858. that you yourselves

  1859. had a better possession

  1860. and an abiding one.

  1861. Therefore,

  1862. do not throw away

  1863. your confidence,

  1864. which has great reward,

  1865. for you have need

  1866. of endurance,

1867. so that when you have

1868. done the will of God,

  1869. you may receive

  1870. what is promised.

  1871. So,

  1872. again,

  1873. joyfully accepting

  1874. the plundering

  1875. of their property

  1876. because they were

  1877. looking to a better

  1878. possession.

  1879. Okay,

  1880. reason number four,

  1881. they had already

  1882. demonstrated maturity

  1883. through love

  1884. and through service.

  1885. So,

  1886. the next bookend

  1887. on this section,

  1888. again,

  1889. is Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1890. So,

  1891. I'll read,

1892. and you can turn there

1893. if you're not already there.

  1894. It's just a page for you.

  1895. Hebrews 6,

  1896. 10 through 12.

  1897. It says,

  1898. God is not unjust

  1899. so as to overlook

  1900. your work

  1901. and the love

  1902. that you have

  1903. shown for his name

  1904. in serving the saints

  1905. as you still do.

  1906. And we desire

  1907. each of you

  1908. to show the same

  1909. earnestness

  1910. to have the full

  1911. assurance of hope

  1912. until the end

  1913. so that

1914. you may not be sluggish

  1915. but imitators

  1916. of those

  1917. who through faith

  1918. and patience

  1919. inherit the promises.

1920. So as we've established in our study in the Hebrews,

1921. these believers are under constant temptation to practice the culturally acceptable version of religion

1922. instead of an uncompromising, obedient life devoted to God and His work.

1923. The author is constantly reminding them of the hope that they were once holding on to,

1924. but now seems to be slipping away.

1925. He's saying to them in the midst of this constant temptation,

1926. Stay strong. You have already endured so much. Keep enduring.

1927. Don't give in now. Don't forgive the hope to which you once clung so closely.

1928. Finish the race. Keep the faith. Stay the course.

1929. The Hebrews needed this encouragement, and some of us need to hear it this morning.

1930. They needed to be reminded of the way that they had once held on to hope so closely

1931. and the fruit of righteousness that had produced in their lives

1932. to the point where they were joyfully accepting the plundering of their property.

1933. As we often do, they needed to remember the hope that they had in Christ

1934. to stand before God as sons looking forward to the abiding city He has made for His people.

  1935. Okay, next.

1936. In the call to grow, sub-point two, the assumption of growth.

1937. So this is growth generally.

  1938. The assumption of growth.

1939. Note the author's tone in the way that he speaks of maturing in the faith.

1940. It's the same that he is saying about teaching.

1941. He's expecting them to grow.

  1942. It's not an option.

  1943. It's an expectation.

1944. And as we're teaching, sanctification, becoming more and more like Christ

1945. as we are in longer relationship with Him,

1946. is not reserved for a select few serious Christians,

1947. those who want to get plugged in,

1948. but it is a normative part of the Christian life

1949. and an indicator of the genuine nature of one's faith.

  1950. 2 Corinthians 3, verse 18 says,

    2 Corinthians 3:18

1951. And we, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,

1952. are being transformed into the same image,

1953. from one degree of glory to another.

1954. For this comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

1955. So believers, every believer is being transformed to be more like Christ.

1956. The negative of this statement.

1957. If you aren't being transformed,

1958. then it's possible you may not be a believer.

1959. Now, this doesn't mean that if you've had a bad week or a bad month,

1960. that you are all of a sudden no longer a believer.

1961. The Christian life is a life of endurance through these ups and downs,

1962. trusting that even though you don't feel,

1963. you may not feel like you're growing in the moment,

1964. that you continue to seek and obey that God,

1965. or seek and obey, trust that God is growing you,

1966. and that He will finish the work that He started in you.

1967. Remember, the Hebrews themselves had stopped growing.

1968. They had stopped applying the truth that they had once held on to.

1969. And while the warnings and the rebukes were certainly warranted,

1970. the author held out continued hope for this church.

1971. If you read through Hebrews,

1972. the warnings and even this rebuke are kind in so many ways.

  1973. There's a warning,

1974. and then He assures them,

1975. but I've seen these things in you already.

1976. So there's like the warning,

1977. and the point backward to the way that the Spirit was once working in them.

1978. And so there's this kindness in the way that He gives these rebukes.

  1979. There's hope that's there,

1980. but the point still stands,

1981. that the trajectory of our life will have its downs,

1982. but should generally be trending towards Christlikeness.

  1983. So, in your life,

1984. when you look back on the past six months,

  1985. or the past year,

  1986. or two,

  1987. or five,

  1988. or a couple decades,

1989. do you see yourself being transformed into the image of Christ,

1990. or do you basically see yourself stagnant,

  1991. the same?

  1992. And again,

1993. sometimes it feels this way.

1994. Sometimes it feels like we haven't grown in a while,

1995. but as we seek and trust in the Lord,

1996. He transforms us to the image of His Son.

  1997. So thirdly,

  1998. the means of growth,

  1999. answering the question,

2000. how then do we grow?

  2001. Very simply,

  2002. the consumption,

  2003. digestion,

2004. and use of the right food.

2005. So we saw from our study today,

2006. how the content of what we take in matters,

2007. but so does the way that we treat this content.

  2008. As believers,

2009. we grow when we receive the truth of God's Word,

2010. and apply it to our lives,

2011. through believing He who said it,

2012. and therefore obeying that which we have received.

  2013. So first,

2014. we remind ourselves often of the milk.

  2015. We remind ourselves,

2016. regularly consume the basic reality of the gospel,

  2017. this milk.

2018. We daily speak to ourselves and to one another,

2019. the fact that God created this world by speaking it into existence,

  2020. that He's holy,

  2021. totally separate from sin,

2022. that He designed humanity with a purpose to obey Him,

2023. and to submit to Him as their Creator,

2024. and each one of us rebelled,

2025. and decided that we knew better than Him,

2026. that our version of right and wrong,

2027. was more suitable for our lives,

  2028. than His version.

2029. This sin separated us from God eternally,

2030. making us enemies of God,

2031. worthy of eternal spiritual death,

  2032. and physical death.

2033. And this was our deserved status,

2034. what we bought with our sin.

2035. Then out of nothing that we could ever do,

2036. out of no good thing that He saw on us,

2037. or merit of our own,

2038. God sent His Son Christ to be the substitute in our place,

2039. to live a perfectly sinless life,

2040. to then bear the wrath of God,

2041. the punishment that we deserved.

  2042. Christ died,

2043. rose three days later in accordance with the Scriptures,

2044. and is now exalted on high with the Father,

2045. until the day when He returns for His bride.

  2046. Us, His people,

2047. those who have placed their faith in these truths,

2048. and have turned away from their sin,

2049. seeking instead to obey God's commands,

2050. and now await His return.

2051. So this is our spiritual milk.

  2052. This is the basics.

2053. And if there are any of you in this room,

2054. who haven't turned from their sin,

2055. and begun to pursue right relationship with God,

2056. through a life of obedience,

2057. don't harden your hearts this morning,

2058. place your faith in Christ today.

2059. Secondly, we grow by seeking after solid food.

2060. The solid food is the deep truths of God.

  2061. God gave us brains,

2062. so that we could understand and process a great deal.

2063. And the more we're able to understand the nature and the character of God,

2064. the more we're able to know, appreciate, and worship Him,

2065. which is why He created us.

  2066. In addressing the question,

2067. which is the greatest commandment,

2068. Jesus answered in Matthew 22,

2069. something that's very familiar to us now.

  2070. He said,

2071. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,

  2072. with all your soul,

2073. and with all your mind.

2074. John Piper comments on this text in his book called Think.

  2075. He says,

2076. I take this command to mean that we direct our thinking in a certain way.

2077. Namely, our thinking should be wholly engaged to do all that it can

2078. to awaken and express the heartfelt fullness of treasuring God above all things.

  2079. I'll read that again.

2080. Our thinking should be wholly engaged to do all that it can

2081. to awaken and express the heartfelt fullness of treasuring God above all things.

  2082. So then,

2083. to fail to study His Word

2084. and seek after a deeper and deeper knowledge of Him

2085. is to fall short of the design that He has for your life,

2086. and it's to neglect the growth and maturity that is ours in Christ.

  2087. Again,

2088. thinking back to Psalm 115,

2089. we don't want to become like our idols,

2090. not fulfilling the purpose for which we were created.

2091. We were designed to know Him deeply and intimately

2092. and to grow in this knowledge which satisfies our souls.

2093. And when we fail to do so,

2094. we inevitably fill the void with the first available idol

2095. and settle for that which our hearts were not meant to love and to treasure.

2096. So speak zealously after the knowledge of God as a treasure to be found.

2097. Hear and heed His voice as you ought

2098. and do the work He has designed you to do.

2099. So we've seen our text this morning.

2100. A sharp, three-pronged rebuke of the Hebrew believers

2101. warning us not to be dull in our hearing,

2102. to be diligent in teaching,

2103. and to seek maturity in our relationship with the Lord.

2104. May we be a church

2105. zealous for deeper knowledge of the Lord.

2106. May we have ears to hear

2107. and eyes to see the truth of God.

2108. May we continually pick up

2109. the glorious task of teaching

2110. as the means by which God saves

2111. and perfects a people for His possession.

  2112. Let's pray.

  2113. Let's pray.
