    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  2. As we continue our verse-by-verse study of the book of Hebrews.

  3. ! Our text for today is Hebrews chapter 6 verses 1-8.

    Hebrews 6:1–8

  4. Before I lead us in reading this, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  5. It was written for His glory and our good.

  6. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  7. Hebrews chapter 6 verse 1 and following.

    Hebrews 6:1

  8. Therefore, let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity.

  9. Not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.

  10. And of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

  11. And this we will do if God permits.

  12. For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift,

  13. and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come,

  14. and then have fallen away to restore them again to repentance,

  15. since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding Him up to contempt.

  16. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it,

  17. and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated,

  18. receives a blessing from God.

  19. But if it bears thorns and thistles,

  20. it is worthless and near to being cursed,

  21. and its end is to be burned.

  22. Preaching is always a serious task.

  23. If preaching is approached properly,

  24. we are picking up weighty things.

  25. Eternal matters.

  26. This should not be a time of silly frivolity.

  27. Texts like this make me especially feel the weight of the task before me,

  28. because its topic is especially weighty.

  29. The author of Hebrews is writing to a beleaguered church,

  30. a church that has suffered much,

  31. a church that was being tempted to forsake following Jesus Christ,

  32. in order to alleviate their suffering.

  33. We chose to study the book of Hebrews in part,

  34. because we believe that it is going to become increasingly uncomfortable

  35. to be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ in the age we live in.

  36. There are and will be pressures on every side to forsake the following of Jesus for the sake of comfort.

  37. For the Hebrew church,

  38. the temptation was to return to Judaism.

  39. They were accepted as Jewish worshipers of God by Rome.

  40. But as Christ followers,

  41. as followers of the way,

  42. they were suffering much.

  43. For us,

  44. the temptation is and will be

  45. to become cultural Christians.

  46. Cultural Christians are, in fact,

  47. not Christians at all.

  48. They worship a God of their own making,

  49. not the God who has revealed Himself in the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ.

  50. They believe that they are generally good enough to gain heaven

  51. and need only to make a decision to add a little Jesus to their lives,

  52. to live their lives more fully.

  53. Their religion is focused on them,

  54. how it benefits them,

  55. how it makes them feel.

  56. They have not encountered the risen Christ.

  57. They know about Him,

  58. or at least some version of Him,

  59. but they do not know Him

  60. and are not known by Him.

  61. These people have been led to believe

  62. that they are Christians

  63. when they are not.

  64. And this is a rampant problem

  65. of our day.

  66. This is quite possibly a problem

  67. in our midst.

  68. I fear that false conversions

  69. are the greatest issue

  70. of the church in our day.

  71. The need to rightly preach the gospel

  72. that people will not be deluded into thinking

  73. that they are in fact in Christ,

  74. that they are safe,

  75. that they will be carried through the storm

  76. is the most concerning matter.

  77. Every generation has had to reassert the gospel,

  78. has had to recapture it,

  79. re-clarify it.

  80. And we are not different in our day.

  81. Listen to what Paul wrote

  82. to the Galatian church

  83. in chapter 1, verses 6-9.

  84. If you're familiar with this letter,

  85. you know that the Galatian church

  86. was being tempted by

  87. what we've called the Judaizers

  88. to pick up, as Gentile believers,

  89. Jewish practices, laws,

  90. and keep those laws

  91. in order to have their acceptance.

  92. To forsake the gospel

  93. that says we're saved by grace alone,

  94. through faith alone,

  95. in Christ alone,

  96. and to add to that works.

  97. And he said this,

  98. I am astonished

  99. that you are so quickly

  100. deserting Him who called you

  101. in the grace of Christ

  102. and are turning

  103. to a different gospel.

  104. Not that there is another one,

  105. but there are some

  106. who trouble you

  107. and want to distort

  108. the gospel of Christ.

  109. But even if we

  110. or an angel from heaven

  111. should preach to you

  112. a gospel contrary

  113. to the one we preach to you,

  114. let him be accursed.

  115. As we have said before,

  116. so now I say again,

  117. if anyone is preaching to you

  118. a gospel contrary

  119. to the one you received,

  120. let him be accursed.

  121. It was a serious matter

  122. already in the first century church.

  123. This idea of distorting the gospel.

  124. He says as if there is another one.

  125. Those were preaching

  126. that you can be justified

  127. in any other way

  128. but by grace alone,

  129. through faith alone,

  130. in Christ alone.

  131. This was the gospel

  132. that Paul had preached

  133. and he says even if I come

  134. and preach to you

  135. a different gospel

  136. or even if an angel

  137. from heaven comes

  138. contradicting this gospel,

  139. let us and let him

  140. be accursed.

  141. The gospel that we are saved

  142. by grace alone,

  143. through faith alone,

  144. in Christ alone

  145. is the narrow path

  146. that leads to life now

  147. and life forever.

  148. All other so-called gospels

  149. are the wide path

  150. that leads to destruction.

  151. And there is much of that

  152. in our day.

  153. Preachers who will say

  154. just enough

  155. that sounds good and true

  156. but not press all the way,

  157. not present the gospel

  158. in its entirety

  159. and in great clarity.

  160. So if you're in my hearing

  161. and claim to be a Christian,

  162. you're here this morning

  163. and you're saying,

  164. I am a follower

  165. of Jesus Christ,

  166. you will find yourself

  167. in one of three categories.

  168. If you claim to be a Christian,

  169. you could claim

  170. not to be a Christian,

  171. that would be an entirely

  172. separate category altogether.

  173. If you claim to be a Christian,

  174. a disciple of Jesus Christ,

  175. you will find yourself

  176. in one of three categories

  177. this morning.

  178. Number one,

  179. a confident Christian.

  180. You will have a surety

  181. of your salvation.

  182. You will say,

  183. yes, I know

  184. that I am in Christ.

  185. I have been saved

  186. by grace alone

  187. through faith alone

  188. in Christ alone.

  189. Secondly,

  190. you may find yourself

  191. as an unconfident Christian.

  192. You may find yourself

  193. truly a follower

  194. of Jesus Christ,

  195. but not having the assurance

  196. that we would all hope

  197. you would have.

  198. That kind of confidence

  199. that we want you to enjoy,

  200. knowing that you have been saved

  201. by God

  202. and that you are kept

  203. by God.

  204. And the third,

  205. possibly,

  206. that you're not a Christian

  207. at all.

  208. It is very possible

  209. to say that you're

  210. a Christ follower

  211. and to not be

  212. a Christ follower.

  213. And the Bible

  214. is helpful to us

  215. in this.

  216. It's not silent

  217. on this topic.

  218. It has much

  219. to say

  220. about this topic.

  221. How do we know?

  222. How can we press on

  223. in knowing

  224. that we are,

  225. in fact,

  226. secure

  227. in Christ?

  228. That His righteousness

  229. is ours.

  230. That our punishment

  231. due our sin

  232. He took

  233. on the cross.

  234. How can we

  235. know this?

  236. Our text

  237. this morning

  238. is helpful

  239. to that end.

  240. Our text

  241. this morning

  242. is a warning

  243. not to be found

  244. in this third category.

  245. To not be one

  246. who says

  247. they're a Christian

  248. and proves

  249. not to be.

  250. Next week's text

  251. as we continue on

  252. in chapter 6

  253. will be an encouragement

  254. to be found

  255. in the first category.

  256. To not have

  257. false assurances

  258. today,

  259. next week,

  260. is to have

  261. good and proper

  262. and true

  263. assurance.

  264. How can we know?

  265. So today

  266. is primarily

  267. about the

  268. negative

  269. side of that.

  270. And our text

  271. this morning

  272. begins in verse 1

  273. with the therefore.

  274. So we must

  275. always consider

  276. when the therefore

  277. is there,

  278. why is it there?

  279. What is it there

  280. for?

  281. And so

  282. last week's text

  283. which started

  284. chapter 5

  285. verse 11

  286. and went through

  287. verse 14

  288. Reese Winkler

  289. labored

  290. to preach for us

  291. and did a wonderful

  292. job explaining

  293. the text

  294. for us.

  295. We saw the

  296. only rebuke

  297. in the book

  298. of Hebrews

  299. that these

  300. Christians,

  301. this beleaguered

  302. church that this

  303. author is writing

  304. to,

  305. had become

  306. dull

  307. of hearing.

  308. And then we saw

  309. in the text

  310. an exhortation

  311. toward

  312. maturity.

  313. So,

  314. you have become

  315. dull of hearing

  316. and he says

  317. this should not

  318. be so,

  319. so let us

  320. press on,

  321. right?

  322. Let's grow up

  323. into Christ.

  324. So let me read

  325. verses 11

  326. through 14

  327. before we move on

  328. in our text today.

  329. Author of Hebrews

  330. wrote,

  331. we're getting

  332. verse 11,

  333. about this

  334. we have much

  335. to say

  336. and it is

  337. hard to

  338. explain

  339. since you

  340. have become

  341. dull

  342. of hearing.

  343. For though

  344. by this time

  345. you ought to

  346. be teachers,

  347. you need

  348. someone to

  349. teach you

  350. again the

  351. basic principles

  352. of the

  353. oracles of

  354. God.

  355. You need

  356. milk,

  357. not solid

  358. food.

  359. For everyone

  360. who lives on

  361. milk is

  362. unskilled in

  363. the word of

  364. righteousness

  365. since he is

  366. a child.

  367. But solid

  368. food is

  369. for the

  370. mature.

  371. For those

  372. who have

  373. their powers

  374. of discernment

  375. trained by

  376. constant

  377. practice

  378. to

  379. distinguish

  380. good

  381. from evil.

  382. So there's

  383. this exhortation

  384. found in this

  385. to not be

  386. children any

  387. longer,

  388. but to

  389. grow up

  390. into maturity.

  391. And it's

  392. with that in

  393. mind that he

  394. says,

  395. therefore,

  396. let us

  397. leave the

  398. elementary

  399. doctrines of

  400. Christ and

  401. go on

  402. to maturity.

  403. Grow up.

  404. And here

  405. he refers

  406. to these

  407. elementary

  408. doctrines

  409. of Christ.

  410. Not laying

  411. again a

  412. foundation of

  413. repentance

  414. from dead

  415. works and

  416. of faith

  417. toward God

  418. and of

  419. instruction

  420. about washings,

  421. the laying

  422. on of

  423. hands,

  424. the resurrection

  425. of the dead,

  426. and eternal

  427. judgment.

  428. There are

  429. six doctrines

  430. here that

  431. the author of

  432. Hebrews calls

  433. the elementary

  434. doctrine of

  435. Christ.

  436. Now,

  437. most New

  438. Testament

  439. scholars agree,

  440. and there's a

  441. lot of

  442. disagreement

  443. about this

  444. particular text,

  445. but most

  446. New Testament

  447. scholars agree

  448. that this

  449. list of

  450. doctrines we

  451. find in

  452. verses 1

  453. and 2

  454. were an

  455. early form

  456. of catechism

  457. for Jewish

  458. converts

  459. to Christianity.

  460. So people

  461. who professed

  462. faith in

  463. Jesus Christ

  464. were taken

  465. through a

  466. series of

  467. teaching.

  468. teaching.

  469. Let us

  470. help you

  471. understand

  472. this way

  473. that you're

  474. now claiming

  475. to follow.

  476. And it may

  477. have taken

  478. the form

  479. of a

  480. catechism

  481. like we

  482. have today

  483. with a

  484. question

  485. and an

  486. answer,

  487. or it

  488. may have

  489. just been

  490. a structured

  491. teaching.

  492. But most

  493. agree,

  494. that's what

  495. here the

  496. author of

  497. Hebrews

  498. is referring

  499. to,

  500. kind of a

  501. packaged

  502. teaching

  503. for those

  504. who are

  505. new

  506. to the

  507. faith.

  508. And so we

  509. see first

  510. some reference

  511. to the

  512. law.

  513. Jewish

  514. converts

  515. would have

  516. been very

  517. familiar with

  518. the Old

  519. Testament

  520. law,

  521. the civil,

  522. ceremonial,

  523. and the

  524. moral law.

  525. And so he

  526. references

  527. repentance

  528. from dead

  529. works.

  530. They would

  531. have had to

  532. learn,

  533. just as we

  534. have to

  535. learn to

  536. come to

  537. faith in

  538. Christ,

  539. that we

  540. can no

  541. longer work

  542. at self

  543. salvation,

  544. that this

  545. is an

  546. impossible

  547. thing to

  548. do,

  549. no amount

  550. of keeping

  551. of the

  552. law is

  553. going to

  554. help us

  555. find favor

  556. with Christ,

  557. because we

  558. can never

  559. do it

  560. perfectly,

  561. and this

  562. is what

  563. the law

  564. requires.

  565. They did

  566. and we

  567. will fall

  568. short of

  569. the righteous

  570. requirement

  571. of God

  572. found in

  573. the moral

  574. law.

  575. We cannot

  576. do it.

  577. We may

  578. keep part

  579. of it,

  580. and even

  581. the parts

  582. we will

  583. keep

  584. imperfectly.

  585. We will

  586. be mixed

  587. with messes

  588. of motivation.

  589. We cannot

  590. keep the

  591. law

  592. perfectly.

  593. And so,

  594. we must

  595. repent.

  596. We must

  597. confess that

  598. we have

  599. failed to

  600. keep the

  601. law.

  602. They were

  603. taught to

  604. repent

  605. from dead

  606. works,

  607. to do that

  608. negative act

  609. of repentance,

  610. and then

  611. to do the

  612. positive act

  613. of placing

  614. their faith

  615. in God.

  616. The text

  617. says,

  618. of faith

  619. toward

  620. God.

  621. That God

  622. could save

  623. them.

  624. Sola

  625. fide,

  626. by faith

  627. alone.

  628. By placing

  629. all of their

  630. trust in the

  631. person and

  632. work of

  633. Jesus Christ.

  634. So,

  635. we have in

  636. these first

  637. two doctrines

  638. a soteriology.

  639. How is it

  640. that we

  641. are saved?

  642. Nixie

  643. references

  644. Jewish

  645. cleansing

  646. rites,

  647. which they

  648. may have

  649. still been

  650. practicing

  651. as a

  652. New Testament

  653. church,

  654. but certainly

  655. Jews in

  656. their day

  657. were practicing

  658. these rites

  659. of washings

  660. and the

  661. laying on

  662. of hands.

  663. And so,

  664. most likely

  665. their instruction

  666. about washings

  667. was about

  668. baptism,

  669. New Testament,

  670. regenerate

  671. baptism into

  672. the fellowship

  673. of a church

  674. and in

  675. baptism of

  676. the Holy

  677. Spirit.

  678. They would

  679. have come

  680. to understand

  681. what it

  682. means to

  683. be truly

  684. cleansed.

  685. Not to

  686. just bear

  687. an outward

  688. sign of

  689. it,

  690. but to

  691. be regenerate,

  692. to have

  693. the Spirit

  694. of Christ

  695. come into

  696. you and

  697. make you

  698. new,

  699. make you

  700. clean

  701. forever

  702. because you

  703. have His

  704. righteousness.

  705. And the

  706. laying on

  707. of hands

  708. likely would

  709. have been

  710. taught about

  711. the commissioning

  712. and empowering

  713. Christians for

  714. Christian service,

  715. like when Paul

  716. and Barnabas

  717. were prayed

  718. over and

  719. sent on

  720. their

  721. missionary

  722. journey.

  723. So the

  724. church is

  725. used in

  726. this way

  727. to send

  728. Christians

  729. by the

  730. power of

  731. the Spirit.

  732. And so we

  733. see in

  734. these next

  735. two,

  736. a

  737. pneumatology,

  738. right?

  739. Some doctrines

  740. about the

  741. Spirit of

  742. Christ.

  743. And then

  744. he picks

  745. up lastly

  746. a couple

  747. of Old

  748. Testament

  749. concepts,

  750. like the

  751. resurrection

  752. of the

  753. dead

  754. and

  755. eternal

  756. judgment.

  757. And in

  758. Christ,

  759. these Old

  760. Testament

  761. teachings

  762. have

  763. their

  764. realized,

  765. their

  766. fully

  767. fleshed

  768. out

  769. meaning.

  770. So they

  771. would have

  772. come to

  773. understand

  774. the

  775. resurrection

  776. of Christ

  777. and what

  778. that means

  779. for us,

  780. our future

  781. resurrection

  782. in Him.

  783. And they

  784. would have

  785. been instructed

  786. in eternal

  787. judgment,

  788. a final

  789. judgment

  790. that Jesus

  791. presides

  792. over as

  793. the judge.

  794. And so

  795. this

  796. catechism,

  797. this early

  798. Christian

  799. teaching,

  800. contained

  801. within it

  802. also an

  803. eschatology.

  804. So a

  805. simple and

  806. basic

  807. soteriology,

  808. pneumatology,

  809. doctrines of

  810. the Spirit,

  811. and eschatology,

  812. doctrines of

  813. the end

  814. times.

  815. So those

  816. are important

  817. things.

  818. The author

  819. of Hebrews

  820. says,

  821. therefore let

  822. us leave

  823. the elementary

  824. doctrines of

  825. Christ and

  826. go on to

  827. maturity.

  828. It would seem

  829. that he's

  830. saying they're

  831. not important

  832. anymore,

  833. but they

  834. are.

  835. He's not

  836. saying let's

  837. forget these

  838. doctrines.

  839. We have

  840. outgrown these

  841. doctrines.

  842. We never

  843. outgrow our

  844. need of

  845. them.

  846. He is merely

  847. asserting that

  848. they should be

  849. settled in

  850. their

  851. understanding.

  852. And they

  853. should be

  854. living in

  855. light of

  856. them.

  857. They should

  858. be building

  859. lives on

  860. the foundation

  861. of these

  862. doctrines of

  863. Christ.

  864. They should

  865. be going

  866. on in

  867. maturity,

  868. not having

  869. to be

  870. again

  871. reminded,

  872. brought back

  873. to the

  874. milk,

  875. the basics

  876. of Christian

  877. faith.

  878. They should

  879. be building

  880. upon that

  881. and maturing

  882. in those

  883. realities.

  884. And this

  885. is what he

  886. means.

  887. This is the

  888. press.

  889. This is the

  890. drive of

  891. the text.

  892. And then he

  893. says in

  894. verse 3,

  895. and I like

  896. the interjection,

  897. and this

  898. we will do

  899. if God

  900. permits.

  901. We have

  902. been saved

  903. by grace

  904. alone,

  905. through faith

  906. alone,

  907. and we

  908. will finish

  909. by grace

  910. alone,

  911. through faith

  912. alone.

  913. Having been

  914. saved by the

  915. Spirit,

  916. we are not

  917. now being

  918. perfected

  919. by the

  920. flesh.

  921. We pay

  922. a part

  923. in our

  924. growing up.

  925. These

  926. Christians are

  927. rebuked for

  928. being dull

  929. of hearing.

  930. The positive

  931. of that is,

  932. so here,

  933. they have to

  934. participate

  935. in that

  936. process.

  937. We don't

  938. just obey

  939. when we

  940. feel like

  941. obeying,

  942. when we're

  943. compelled to

  944. obey.

  945. We obey,

  946. because we

  947. know it's

  948. good and it's

  949. our part

  950. to play

  951. in our

  952. growing up

  953. and in

  954. our

  955. maturing,

  956. but all

  957. along,

  958. we praise

  959. God for

  960. the grace

  961. he gives

  962. us for

  963. obedience.

  964. God saves

  965. us and

  966. God keeps

  967. us,

  968. and we'll

  969. see much

  970. more about

  971. this later

  972. as we

  973. continue to

  974. study.

  975. But at

  976. this point

  977. of verse

  978. three,

  979. and this we

  980. will do

  981. if God

  982. permits,

  983. I want to

  984. read a

  985. really brief

  986. excerpt of

  987. a poem

  988. written by

  989. John Bunyan,

  990. author of

  991. Pilgrim's Progress.

  992. This is not

  993. in Pilgrim's Progress,

  994. but he wrote,

  995. Run,

  996. John,

  997. run,

  998. the law

  999. commands,

  1000. but gives

  1001. us neither

  1002. feet nor

  1003. hands.

  1004. Far better

  1005. news the

  1006. gospel brings.

  1007. It bids

  1008. us fly

  1009. and gives

  1010. us wings.

  1011. All that

  1012. God commands

  1013. of us,

  1014. he provides

  1015. the necessary

  1016. means to

  1017. fulfill.

  1018. those

  1019. commands.

  1020. Now,

  1021. in verse

  1022. four,

  1023. we come to

  1024. the most

  1025. complicated

  1026. and contested

  1027. part of

  1028. our text.

  1029. For it is

  1030. impossible,

  1031. the author of

  1032. Hebrews says,

  1033. in the case of

  1034. those who have

  1035. once been

  1036. enlightened,

  1037. who have

  1038. tasted the

  1039. heavenly gift

  1040. and have

  1041. shared in

  1042. the Holy

  1043. Spirit,

  1044. and have

  1045. tasted the

  1046. goodness of

  1047. the Word

  1048. of God

  1049. and the

  1050. powers of

  1051. the age

  1052. to come,

  1053. and then

  1054. have fallen

  1055. away to

  1056. restore them

  1057. again to

  1058. repentance,

  1059. since they

  1060. are crucifying

  1061. once again

  1062. the Son of

  1063. God to

  1064. their own

  1065. harm and

  1066. holding him

  1067. up to

  1068. contempt.

  1069. The most

  1070. complicated and

  1071. most contested

  1072. part of our

  1073. text.

  1074. Three views

  1075. have commonly

  1076. been held of

  1077. this text.

  1078. I'm going to

  1079. give you brief

  1080. summaries of

  1081. the first two,

  1082. why they're not

  1083. the proper

  1084. views,

  1085. and then

  1086. I'll present

  1087. the third

  1088. view and

  1089. support it

  1090. at length.

  1091. The first

  1092. view,

  1093. erroneous

  1094. view,

  1095. is hypothetical.

  1096. The author

  1097. of Hebrews is

  1098. presenting a

  1099. hypothetical

  1100. case.

  1101. This view

  1102. says,

  1103. it's referring

  1104. to a

  1105. situation

  1106. that could

  1107. not really

  1108. happen.

  1109. This view

  1110. should be

  1111. rejected because

  1112. it is just

  1113. unreasonable.

  1114. If the

  1115. sin could

  1116. not be

  1117. committed,

  1118. then the

  1119. writer would

  1120. have no

  1121. reason to

  1122. warn his

  1123. audience to

  1124. avoid it.

  1125. What is the

  1126. point?

  1127. Why waste

  1128. the precious

  1129. parchment and

  1130. ink warning

  1131. against a

  1132. sin that

  1133. cannot be

  1134. committed?

  1135. I would

  1136. suggest to

  1137. you that it's

  1138. not a

  1139. hypothetical at

  1140. all.

  1141. Secondly,

  1142. erroneous

  1143. view,

  1144. the actual

  1145. view.

  1146. This view

  1147. holds that

  1148. God provides

  1149. the grace

  1150. for salvation,

  1151. that perseverance

  1152. though, the

  1153. keeping to

  1154. the end,

  1155. is entirely

  1156. up to the

  1157. individual.

  1158. So God

  1159. can save

  1160. you, but

  1161. he cannot

  1162. or will

  1163. not keep

  1164. you, and

  1165. you must

  1166. keep

  1167. yourself.

  1168. This view

  1169. sees individuals

  1170. spoken of as

  1171. actually in

  1172. the faith.

  1173. They are

  1174. in fact

  1175. Christians,

  1176. but having

  1177. the ability

  1178. to lose

  1179. their salvation.

  1180. I don't

  1181. know anybody

  1182. in our

  1183. day that

  1184. likes to

  1185. believe that.

  1186. They would

  1187. never say

  1188. they do,

  1189. although they

  1190. may functionally.

  1191. This view

  1192. says that

  1193. these people

  1194. may have

  1195. had all the

  1196. appearances,

  1197. been found

  1198. in the faith,

  1199. but yet they

  1200. can reject it,

  1201. having been in

  1202. it.

  1203. this view

  1204. should be

  1205. rejected because

  1206. it is just

  1207. flatly

  1208. unbiblical,

  1209. which I'll

  1210. show you

  1211. momentarily

  1212. with a

  1213. third view.

  1214. The third

  1215. view is

  1216. the apparent

  1217. view.

  1218. This view,

  1219. the proper

  1220. one,

  1221. holds that

  1222. anyone who

  1223. falls away

  1224. from the

  1225. faith were

  1226. not truly

  1227. believers to

  1228. begin with.

  1229. They weren't

  1230. actually in

  1231. the faith

  1232. to begin

  1233. with.

  1234. They may

  1235. have had the

  1236. appearance

  1237. of faith,

  1238. but were

  1239. not,

  1240. in fact,

  1241. Christians.

  1242. I'm going

  1243. to give

  1244. you a few

  1245. reasons why

  1246. I believe

  1247. this is the

  1248. right view

  1249. of this

  1250. text.

  1251. First,

  1252. this idea,

  1253. the ideas

  1254. presented

  1255. forth that

  1256. these people

  1257. had been

  1258. enlightened,

  1259. they had

  1260. tasted,

  1261. they had

  1262. shared.

  1263. Remember our

  1264. audience?

  1265. These are

  1266. Hellenistic

  1267. Jews,

  1268. people who

  1269. are practicing

  1270. Jews,

  1271. familiar with

  1272. their old

  1273. Testament,

  1274. would have

  1275. been familiar

  1276. with the

  1277. story of

  1278. their predecessors,

  1279. their people.

  1280. The children

  1281. of Israel

  1282. had a

  1283. privileged

  1284. position as

  1285. they encountered

  1286. God in

  1287. the wilderness.

  1288. They had

  1289. followed the

  1290. instructions with

  1291. the Lamb's

  1292. blood on

  1293. their doorposts.

  1294. They had

  1295. been spared

  1296. the Passover

  1297. judgment.

  1298. They had

  1299. miraculously

  1300. crossed through

  1301. the Red Sea,

  1302. had seen the

  1303. pillar of cloud

  1304. and the

  1305. pillar of fire.

  1306. They had

  1307. tasted the

  1308. miraculous waters

  1309. of Marah,

  1310. ate daily

  1311. manna.

  1312. They had

  1313. heard the

  1314. voice of

  1315. God's thunder

  1316. out of the

  1317. clouds at

  1318. Sinai.

  1319. They had

  1320. all the

  1321. same spiritual

  1322. benefits,

  1323. but not

  1324. all of the

  1325. children of

  1326. Israel

  1327. believed.

  1328. These

  1329. original

  1330. hearers would

  1331. have been

  1332. very familiar

  1333. with this

  1334. as he

  1335. employs

  1336. language like

  1337. enlightened

  1338. and tasted

  1339. and shared.

  1340. That they

  1341. were a

  1342. people that

  1343. had the

  1344. spiritual

  1345. benefit of

  1346. God,

  1347. but had

  1348. yet not

  1349. believed.

  1350. And he's

  1351. warning against

  1352. that in

  1353. our text.

  1354. This is the

  1355. point that the

  1356. author of

  1357. Hebrews is

  1358. making in

  1359. chapter 3.

  1360. You can recall

  1361. our study

  1362. there.

  1363. As he speaks

  1364. of those

  1365. unable to

  1366. enter the

  1367. promised land

  1368. into the

  1369. rest of

  1370. God,

  1371. and then

  1372. he says

  1373. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 3:19

  1374. 3 verse

  1375. 19,

  1376. so we

  1377. see that

  1378. they were

  1379. unable to

  1380. enter because

  1381. of unbelief.

  1382. Because they

  1383. weren't faithful

  1384. to the God

  1385. that had

  1386. called them

  1387. and had

  1388. provided all

  1389. of this

  1390. spiritual

  1391. benefit.

  1392. Positive

  1393. spiritual

  1394. experiences

  1395. do not

  1396. make for

  1397. salvation,

  1398. but only

  1399. a trusting

  1400. in Christ

  1401. alone,

  1402. by grace

  1403. alone,

  1404. through faith

  1405. alone.

  1406. Throwing

  1407. your whole

  1408. self on

  1409. him,

  1410. that he

  1411. fulfilled the

  1412. righteous

  1413. requirement of

  1414. the law,

  1415. that he

  1416. paid the

  1417. debt of

  1418. your sin.

  1419. No amount

  1420. of

  1421. thelies

  1422. when you're

  1423. part of a

  1424. church

  1425. saves you.

  1426. It's faith

  1427. in Christ

  1428. that saves

  1429. you.

  1430. So this is

  1431. consistent.

  1432. His language

  1433. is extremely

  1434. consistent.

  1435. We just

  1436. have to

  1437. get our

  1438. 21st century

  1439. minds to

  1440. catch up

  1441. to the

  1442. text.

  1443. Secondly,

  1444. I think this

  1445. apparent view

  1446. is correct

  1447. because of

  1448. the parable

  1449. of the

  1450. sower.

  1451. Jesus gave

  1452. us instruction

  1453. about these

  1454. types of

  1455. people.

  1456. It should

  1457. grieve us,

  1458. it should

  1459. make us

  1460. very sad,

  1461. but Jesus

  1462. wants us to

  1463. understand what's

  1464. happening when

  1465. we see people

  1466. who claim

  1467. to be in

  1468. the faith,

  1469. who by

  1470. all measurable

  1471. means seem

  1472. to be in

  1473. the faith,

  1474. and then

  1475. forsake it

  1476. altogether.

  1477. As he tells

  1478. this parable,

  1479. he tells the

  1480. parable of the

  1481. sower going out

  1482. and sowing the

  1483. seed.

  1484. The gospel of

  1485. Jesus Christ.

  1486. And we see

  1487. that different

  1488. soils receive it

  1489. and respond to

  1490. it differently.

  1491. And there's a

  1492. particular soil

  1493. that speaks

  1494. into this text.

  1495. It's the rocky

  1496. soil,

  1497. that rocky

  1498. ground.

  1499. Jesus explains

  1500. it in Matthew

  1501. 13,

  1502. 20-21.

  1503. He says,

  1504. For at what

  1505. was sown on

  1506. rocky ground,

  1507. this is the

  1508. one who hears

  1509. the word,

  1510. and immediately

  1511. receives it

  1512. with joy.

  1513. Yet he has

  1514. no root

  1515. in himself,

  1516. but endures

  1517. for a while,

  1518. and when

  1519. tribulation

  1520. or persecution

  1521. arises on

  1522. account of

  1523. the word,

  1524. immediately

  1525. he falls

  1526. away.

  1527. So,

  1528. it's the

  1529. person who

  1530. says,

  1531. this sounds

  1532. great.

  1533. Eternal

  1534. life?

  1535. I like

  1536. it.

  1537. What must

  1538. I do?

  1539. Walk the

  1540. aisle?

  1541. I'm there.

  1542. And that as

  1543. soon as things

  1544. get tough,

  1545. as soon as

  1546. the suffering

  1547. of this world

  1548. comes,

  1549. and it

  1550. will,

  1551. as soon as

  1552. discomfort

  1553. because of

  1554. a belief

  1555. in this

  1556. word,

  1557. this gospel

  1558. comes,

  1559. they turn

  1560. away.

  1561. This is

  1562. exactly what

  1563. was happening

  1564. in this

  1565. little fellowship.

  1566. They had

  1567. suffered for

  1568. the sake

  1569. of the

  1570. gospel.

  1571. And because

  1572. these individuals

  1573. didn't treasure

  1574. Christ the way

  1575. people who are

  1576. in Christ

  1577. treasure Christ,

  1578. they rejected

  1579. him.

  1580. The measure

  1581. of faithfulness

  1582. is fruitfulness.

  1583. You're

  1584. instructed

  1585. again and

  1586. again and

  1587. again in

  1588. the Scripture

  1589. that good

  1590. trees bear

  1591. good fruit.

  1592. Bad trees

  1593. bear bad

  1594. fruit.

  1595. Beloved, we

  1596. ought not tie

  1597. our salvation

  1598. to an event

  1599. in our life.

  1600. God saves

  1601. people in

  1602. and at

  1603. events.

  1604. praise God,

  1605. should tie

  1606. our salvation

  1607. to his

  1608. active working

  1609. in our

  1610. lives.

  1611. Proofs out

  1612. who we

  1613. are.

  1614. I have

  1615. been saved

  1616. by the

  1617. righteousness

  1618. of Christ

  1619. and his

  1620. sacrificial

  1621. death on

  1622. my behalf.

  1623. And because

  1624. of that,

  1625. faith in

  1626. that,

  1627. I have the

  1628. spirit of

  1629. Christ who

  1630. causes me to

  1631. walk in

  1632. his ways.

  1633. this is

  1634. something that

  1635. can be

  1636. observed.

  1637. It's

  1638. fruit.

  1639. It's

  1640. tangible.

  1641. It can

  1642. be seen

  1643. and smelled

  1644. and tasted.

  1645. The author

  1646. of Hebrews

  1647. does this

  1648. very thing

  1649. in verses

  1650. 7 and

  1651. 8.

  1652. He picks

  1653. up this

  1654. consistent

  1655. Bible language.

  1656. He says,

  1657. For land

  1658. that has

  1659. drunk the

  1660. rain that

  1661. often falls

  1662. on it,

  1663. and produces

  1664. a crop

  1665. useful to

  1666. those for

  1667. whose sake

  1668. it is

  1669. cultivated,

  1670. receives a

  1671. blessing from

  1672. God.

  1673. But if it

  1674. bears thorns

  1675. and thistles,

  1676. it is

  1677. worthless and

  1678. near to

  1679. being cursed,

  1680. and its

  1681. end is

  1682. to be

  1683. burned.

  1684. Agrarian

  1685. people understood

  1686. these metaphors

  1687. so readily.

  1688. I hope your

  1689. brain is

  1690. catching what's

  1691. being said

  1692. here.

  1693. Beloved,

  1694. if we are

  1695. not pressing

  1696. on in

  1697. holiness,

  1698. and we

  1699. don't do

  1700. this with

  1701. perfection,

  1702. remember

  1703. that second

  1704. category?

  1705. That Christian

  1706. who's just

  1707. not sure?

  1708. We have

  1709. days.

  1710. Where we

  1711. act as if

  1712. we are not

  1713. sons and

  1714. daughters of

  1715. the Most

  1716. High.

  1717. We in

  1718. every way

  1719. reject His

  1720. good rule.

  1721. But we

  1722. ought to be

  1723. able to see

  1724. a general

  1725. life,

  1726. a general

  1727. trajectory

  1728. towards

  1729. holiness,

  1730. a hating

  1731. of sin,

  1732. and a loving

  1733. of righteousness.

  1734. This ought to

  1735. be true of

  1736. us.

  1737. And I will

  1738. tell you

  1739. this,

  1740. you should

  1741. not be

  1742. left alone

  1743. to figure

  1744. this out.

  1745. You will

  1746. either think

  1747. too much

  1748. of yourself,

  1749. or you

  1750. will think

  1751. too little

  1752. of yourself.

  1753. God has

  1754. saved a

  1755. people.

  1756. He's given

  1757. power to

  1758. the church

  1759. to do

  1760. this work

  1761. together.

  1762. We would

  1763. press one

  1764. another in

  1765. holiness.

  1766. That we

  1767. would call

  1768. each other

  1769. out in

  1770. our sin.

  1771. That we

  1772. would repent

  1773. and turn

  1774. to Christ

  1775. and grow

  1776. on in

  1777. our faith.

  1778. So the

  1779. parable of the

  1780. sower is the

  1781. second reason I

  1782. think that the

  1783. author of Hebrews

  1784. is talking about

  1785. apparent

  1786. Christians.

  1787. And then

  1788. thirdly and

  1789. most fully,

  1790. the Bible

  1791. doctrine of

  1792. the perseverance

  1793. of the

  1794. saints.

  1795. Which says

  1796. that those

  1797. who are

  1798. saved by

  1799. Christ will

  1800. persevere

  1801. to the end.

  1802. Will remain

  1803. in Christ

  1804. to the end.

  1805. That this is a

  1806. sure thing.

  1807. If he has

  1808. saved us,

  1809. he will

  1810. keep us.

  1811. The good

  1812. old southern

  1813. version of

  1814. this is once

  1815. saved,

  1816. always

  1817. saved.

  1818. In my

  1819. younger years,

  1820. wrestling with

  1821. doubt,

  1822. the doctrines

  1823. of grace

  1824. became a

  1825. great rest

  1826. for me.

  1827. There's

  1828. nothing I

  1829. could have

  1830. done to

  1831. save myself.

  1832. I did

  1833. not make a

  1834. decision for

  1835. Christ.

  1836. I rejected

  1837. him at

  1838. every turn.

  1839. I was a

  1840. wretched

  1841. rebel

  1842. against God.

  1843. but God,

  1844. because of

  1845. his mercy,

  1846. because of

  1847. his great

  1848. love for

  1849. his people,

  1850. saved me.

  1851. As much

  1852. as I may

  1853. have tried

  1854. to gain

  1855. acceptance

  1856. before him,

  1857. I could

  1858. not be

  1859. accepted

  1860. except to

  1861. be clothed

  1862. in Christ.

  1863. To fully

  1864. believe in

  1865. his righteousness

  1866. and his

  1867. sacrificial

  1868. death for

  1869. the salvation

  1870. of my

  1871. soul.

  1872. This is a

  1873. working of

  1874. God.

  1875. Every time

  1876. these things

  1877. are taught

  1878. in the

  1879. scripture,

  1880. it's taught

  1881. as a

  1882. comfort to

  1883. us.

  1884. It's not

  1885. meant to be

  1886. a thing we

  1887. beat others

  1888. up with.

  1889. It's meant

  1890. to be a

  1891. comfort to

  1892. us.

  1893. God has

  1894. saved you.

  1895. God will

  1896. keep you.

  1897. Richard

  1898. Baxter once

  1899. said,

  1900. this is on

  1901. your bulletin

  1902. if you

  1903. happen to

  1904. have one

  1905. this morning,

  1906. in our

  1907. first

  1908. paradise in

  1909. Eden,

  1910. there was

  1911. a way

  1912. to go

  1913. out,

  1914. but no

  1915. way to

  1916. go in

  1917. again.

  1918. But as

  1919. for the

  1920. heavenly

  1921. paradise,

  1922. there is

  1923. a way

  1924. to go

  1925. in,

  1926. but not

  1927. way to

  1928. go out.

  1929. Praise

  1930. God.

  1931. So I'm

  1932. going to

  1933. take you

  1934. through

  1935. just a

  1936. few

  1937. texts

  1938. that speak

  1939. to this,

  1940. to make

  1941. this point,

  1942. that if we

  1943. are saved

  1944. by Christ,

  1945. we are

  1946. kept

  1947. by Christ.

  1948. In

  1949. Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  1950. chapter 1

  1951. verse 6,

  1952. Paul declares

  1953. with great

  1954. confidence,

  1955. I am sure

  1956. of this,

  1957. that he

  1958. who began

  1959. a good

  1960. work in

  1961. you will

  1962. bring it

  1963. to completion

  1964. at the

  1965. day of

  1966. Jesus

  1967. Christ.

  1968. He started

  1969. it,

  1970. he is

  1971. going to

  1972. finish it.

  1973. In

  1974. chapter 8

  1975. verse 38

  1976. through 39,

  1977. Paul again

  1978. says,

  1979. for I am

  1980. sure that

  1981. neither

  1982. death

  1983. nor life,

  1984. present

  1985. lived life,

  1986. nor angels

  1987. nor rulers,

  1988. nor things

  1989. present,

  1990. nor things

  1991. to come,

  1992. nor powers,

  1993. nor height,

  1994. nor depth,

  1995. nor anything

  1996. else in

  1997. all creation,

  1998. including

  1999. your will,

  2000. will be

  2001. able to

  2002. separate us

  2003. from the

  2004. love of

  2005. God in

  2006. Christ Jesus,

  2007. our Lord.

  2008. Earlier in

  2009. chapter 8,

  2010. Paul wrote

  2011. verse 29

  2012. through 30,

  2013. for those

  2014. whom he

  2015. foreknew,

  2016. he also

  2017. predestined to

  2018. be conformed

  2019. to the image

  2020. of his

  2021. son,

  2022. to grow up,

  2023. to be

  2024. matured,

  2025. to look

  2026. more like

  2027. Christ.

  2028. And those

  2029. whom he

  2030. justified,

  2031. he also

  2032. glorified.

  2033. in the

  2034. work of

  2035. justification,

  2036. there's a

  2037. guarantee

  2038. of

  2039. glorification.

  2040. Saves

  2041. us and

  2042. keeps

  2043. us.

  2044. Peter says

  2045. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:4

  2046. chapter 1

  2047. verse 4,

  2048. that we are

  2049. saved to

  2050. an inheritance

  2051. that is

  2052. imperishable,

  2053. undefiled,

  2054. and unfading,

  2055. and that it

  2056. is kept

  2057. in heaven

  2058. for you.

  2059. Jude

  2060. in Jude

  2061. verse 24,

  2062. has great

  2063. confidence

  2064. in God

  2065. in his

  2066. benediction

  2067. where he

  2068. writes,

  2069. now to

  2070. him who

  2071. is able

  2072. to keep

  2073. you from

  2074. stumbling

  2075. and to

  2076. present you

  2077. blameless

  2078. before the

  2079. presence of

  2080. his glory

  2081. with great

  2082. joy.

  2083. And he

  2084. goes on

  2085. to give

  2086. him glory

  2087. for that.

  2088. Right?

  2089. God is

  2090. able to

  2091. keep you

  2092. and present

  2093. you

  2094. blameless.

  2095. Paul tells

  2096. us in

  2097. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:30

  2098. chapter 4

  2099. verse 30,

  2100. that the

  2101. Spirit seals

  2102. us for

  2103. redemption.

  2104. He writes,

  2105. and do not

  2106. grieve the

  2107. Holy Spirit

  2108. of God

  2109. by whom

  2110. you were

  2111. sealed

  2112. for the

  2113. day of

  2114. redemption.

  2115. John,

  2116. in 1 John

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  2117. chapter 2

  2118. and verse 19,

  2119. states of

  2120. those people

  2121. who have

  2122. left the

  2123. fellowship of

  2124. the church,

  2125. they went

  2126. out from

  2127. us,

  2128. but they

  2129. were not

  2130. of us.

  2131. For if

  2132. they had

  2133. been of

  2134. us,

  2135. they would

  2136. have continued

  2137. with us,

  2138. but they

  2139. went out

  2140. that it

  2141. might

  2142. become

  2143. plain

  2144. that they

  2145. all are

  2146. not

  2147. of us.

  2148. Jesus

  2149. teaches in

  2150. Matthew

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  2151. chapter 24

  2152. and verse

  2153. 24,

  2154. that it

  2155. is impossible

  2156. to lead

  2157. the elect

  2158. astray.

  2159. He says,

  2160. for false

  2161. Christ and

  2162. false prophets

  2163. will arise

  2164. and perform

  2165. great signs

  2166. and wonders

  2167. so as to

  2168. lead astray,

  2169. if possible,

  2170. even the

  2171. elect.

  2172. He states

  2173. that it's

  2174. impossible

  2175. for this

  2176. to happen.

  2177. And in

  2178. John

    John 6:40

  2179. chapter 6

  2180. verse 40,

  2181. Jesus says,

  2182. for this is

  2183. the will of

  2184. my Father,

  2185. that everyone

  2186. who looks

  2187. on the Son

  2188. and believes

  2189. in Him

  2190. should have

  2191. eternal life,

  2192. and I will

  2193. raise him

  2194. up on the

  2195. last day.

  2196. And in

  2197. John

    John 10:27

  2198. chapter 10

  2199. verse 27

  2200. and 28,

  2201. my sheep

  2202. hear my

  2203. voice,

  2204. and I

  2205. know them,

  2206. and they

  2207. follow me.

  2208. I give

  2209. them eternal

  2210. life,

  2211. and they

  2212. will never

  2213. perish,

  2214. and no

  2215. one will

  2216. snatch them

  2217. out of

  2218. my hand.

  2219. So what's

  2220. being taught

  2221. here,

  2222. if you

  2223. understand it

  2224. by this

  2225. apparent

  2226. view,

  2227. it squares

  2228. firmly with

  2229. the doctrine

  2230. of the

  2231. perseverance

  2232. of the

  2233. saints.

  2234. And this

  2235. is just

  2236. a sampling

  2237. of the

  2238. text.

  2239. There's so

  2240. many more

  2241. that speak

  2242. to this.

  2243. God saves

  2244. us,

  2245. and God

  2246. keeps us.

  2247. And so

  2248. those that

  2249. are being

  2250. referred to

  2251. in our

  2252. text,

  2253. those who

  2254. have shared

  2255. and tasted,

  2256. weren't

  2257. Christians

  2258. to begin

  2259. with.

  2260. But then

  2261. we get to

  2262. verse 4,

  2263. this little

  2264. phrase at

  2265. the very

  2266. beginning

  2267. that says,

  2268. for it

  2269. is impossible,

  2270. and then

  2271. later in

  2272. verse 6,

  2273. to restore

  2274. them again

  2275. to repentance.

  2276. If they've

  2277. experienced

  2278. this and

  2279. then have

  2280. fallen away,

  2281. it's impossible

  2282. to restore

  2283. them again

  2284. to repentance

  2285. since they

  2286. are crucifying

  2287. once again

  2288. the Son

  2289. of God

  2290. to their

  2291. own harm

  2292. and holding

  2293. Him up

  2294. to contempt.

  2295. We must

  2296. understand

  2297. what that

  2298. means.

  2299. We must

  2300. wrestle with

  2301. that language.

  2302. It is a

  2303. difficult

  2304. passage

  2305. to wrestle

  2306. with.

  2307. We've

  2308. said before

  2309. that this

  2310. is the

  2311. most

  2312. complex

  2313. Greek

  2314. in the

  2315. New

  2316. Testament.

  2317. It's a

  2318. beautifully

  2319. written

  2320. book,

  2321. but it

  2322. contains

  2323. some

  2324. turns

  2325. of

  2326. phrases

  2327. in it

  2328. that

  2329. are

  2330. quite

  2331. hard.

  2332. We've

  2333. got this

  2334. wonderful

  2335. resource

  2336. that's

  2337. the

  2338. New

  2339. Testament

  2340. in the

  2341. Greek

  2342. text,

  2343. sentence

  2344. diagrammed.

  2345. And this

  2346. one,

  2347. usually I'll

  2348. print those

  2349. things out

  2350. and I'll

  2351. tape them

  2352. together

  2353. and I'll

  2354. put them

  2355. out of

  2356. my

  2357. desk

  2358. and I

  2359. go,

  2360. oh,

  2361. aha.

  2362. This

  2363. one turned

  2364. my head

  2365. around and

  2366. around.

  2367. So the

  2368. simplest thing

  2369. for us

  2370. to do,

  2371. and for

  2372. the sake

  2373. of time,

  2374. is to

  2375. place it

  2376. in its

  2377. larger

  2378. biblical

  2379. context.

  2380. Let's

  2381. say,

  2382. is it

  2383. possible

  2384. that we

  2385. would

  2386. commit

  2387. a sin

  2388. that

  2389. cannot

  2390. be

  2391. forgiven?

  2392. If you

  2393. are much

  2394. of a

  2395. student

  2396. of the

  2397. Bible,

  2398. you will

  2399. know that

  2400. there's

  2401. a sin

  2402. called

  2403. the

  2404. unpardonable

  2405. sin.

  2406. There's

  2407. much

  2408. debate

  2409. about

  2410. what

  2411. that

  2412. is,

  2413. but I

  2414. would

  2415. suggest

  2416. to you

  2417. that that's

  2418. what they

  2419. have

  2420. done.

  2421. They

  2422. have

  2423. committed

  2424. the

  2425. unpardonable,

  2426. sin.

  2427. And Jesus

  2428. speaks about

  2429. this in

  2430. Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  2431. chapter 12.

  2432. And in

  2433. Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  2434. chapter 12,

  2435. he's healed

  2436. a man

  2437. who's demon

  2438. possessed

  2439. and mute.

  2440. And when

  2441. that happens,

  2442. the Pharisees,

  2443. the Jewish

  2444. people,

  2445. who have

  2446. experienced

  2447. the benefit,

  2448. the spiritual

  2449. benefit,

  2450. of being part

  2451. of the

  2452. community

  2453. of God,

  2454. they had

  2455. the Word

  2456. of God,

  2457. they had

  2458. all the

  2459. signs and

  2460. wonders,

  2461. that they

  2462. were being

  2463. pointed

  2464. to

  2465. Christ.

  2466. These

  2467. men

  2468. rejected

  2469. the work

  2470. of Jesus

  2471. as coming

  2472. from God

  2473. and they

  2474. attributed

  2475. it instead

  2476. to

  2477. the

  2478. Elizabeth.

  2479. They

  2480. attributed

  2481. it instead

  2482. to

  2483. Satan.

  2484. They

  2485. had been

  2486. given

  2487. every

  2488. benefit

  2489. and yet

  2490. they

  2491. didn't

  2492. believe.

  2493. Jesus

  2494. says,

  2495. verse 31

  2496. and 32

  2497. of Matthew

  2498. 12,

  2499. therefore I

  2500. tell you,

  2501. every sin

  2502. and blasphemy

  2503. will be

  2504. forgiven

  2505. people,

  2506. but the

  2507. blasphemy

  2508. against the

  2509. Spirit

  2510. will not

  2511. be

  2512. forgiven.

  2513. And whoever

  2514. speaks a

  2515. word against

  2516. the Son

  2517. of Man

  2518. will be

  2519. forgiven,

  2520. but whoever

  2521. speaks against

  2522. the Holy

  2523. Spirit

  2524. will not

  2525. be forgiven,

  2526. either in

  2527. this age

  2528. or in

  2529. the age

  2530. to come.

  2531. Jesus is

  2532. not talking

  2533. here about

  2534. taking the

  2535. Holy Spirit's

  2536. name in

  2537. vain.

  2538. This is

  2539. not what

  2540. he's saying.

  2541. What he's

  2542. saying is,

  2543. those who

  2544. see the

  2545. work of

  2546. the Spirit

  2547. of Christ,

  2548. this part

  2549. of the

  2550. triune

  2551. God

  2552. working to

  2553. bring benefit

  2554. to you,

  2555. to lead

  2556. you spiritually

  2557. to faith

  2558. in Christ,

  2559. who reject

  2560. Him

  2561. absolutely

  2562. to the

  2563. end,

  2564. they cannot

  2565. be saved.

  2566. They cannot

  2567. be.

  2568. How can

  2569. one who

  2570. refuses to

  2571. place faith

  2572. in Christ

  2573. be saved?

  2574. And there's

  2575. a little bit

  2576. of a clue

  2577. to this

  2578. in our

  2579. text.

  2580. The author

  2581. of Hebrews

  2582. says,

  2583. since,

  2584. why is it

  2585. impossible

  2586. to restore

  2587. them again?

  2588. Since they

  2589. are crucifying

  2590. once again

  2591. the Son

  2592. of God

  2593. to their

  2594. own harm

  2595. and holding

  2596. Him up

  2597. to contempt.

  2598. What these

  2599. people are

  2600. doing who

  2601. appear to

  2602. have been

  2603. in the

  2604. faith and

  2605. have now

  2606. left the

  2607. faith,

  2608. is they're

  2609. saying that

  2610. this Jesus

  2611. who was

  2612. crucified,

  2613. laid to

  2614. death,

  2615. raised three

  2616. days later,

  2617. was not

  2618. in fact

  2619. the Christ.

  2620. He was

  2621. just a

  2622. man.

  2623. They have

  2624. lost their

  2625. faith in

  2626. Jesus being

  2627. the Jesus

  2628. He said

  2629. He is

  2630. in the

  2631. gospel of

  2632. Jesus Christ.

  2633. They're

  2634. participating

  2635. in His

  2636. crucifixion

  2637. by simply

  2638. saying,

  2639. He's just

  2640. a man.

  2641. They held

  2642. Him up

  2643. to contempt.

  2644. Their

  2645. derision,

  2646. their

  2647. accusation,

  2648. they're

  2649. saying He

  2650. was justly

  2651. condemned

  2652. for claiming

  2653. He was

  2654. the Son

  2655. of God,

  2656. for claiming

  2657. to be

  2658. the Christ.

  2659. They became

  2660. participators

  2661. in that

  2662. and putting

  2663. Him to

  2664. death,

  2665. not believing

  2666. that He

  2667. was faultless,

  2668. that His

  2669. death on

  2670. the cross

  2671. was entirely

  2672. unjust because

  2673. He had

  2674. kept God's

  2675. law with

  2676. perfection.

  2677. That He

  2678. bore all

  2679. of the

  2680. wrath due

  2681. our sin

  2682. in Himself.

  2683. They're

  2684. rejecting that

  2685. and they're

  2686. rejecting it

  2687. with finality.

  2688. They've

  2689. altogether said

  2690. the person

  2691. and work

  2692. of Jesus

  2693. means nothing

  2694. to me.

  2695. So those

  2696. who appeared

  2697. to be,

  2698. who received

  2699. the benefit

  2700. of Christian

  2701. fellowship,

  2702. showed

  2703. themselves

  2704. not to

  2705. be,

  2706. because they

  2707. don't have

  2708. the salvation

  2709. of their

  2710. souls by

  2711. grace alone,

  2712. through faith

  2713. alone,

  2714. in Christ

  2715. alone.

  2716. And this

  2717. is the

  2718. great warning

  2719. of this

  2720. text.

  2721. It's the

  2722. warning for

  2723. us this

  2724. morning.

  2725. You may

  2726. have all

  2727. the spiritual

  2728. benefit of

  2729. growing up

  2730. in a

  2731. Christian

  2732. home,

  2733. being drug

  2734. to church

  2735. each and

  2736. every Sunday,

  2737. being forced

  2738. to sit

  2739. in fellowship

  2740. with your

  2741. parents,

  2742. being taught

  2743. the gospel

  2744. in your

  2745. home,

  2746. going on

  2747. mission trips

  2748. every summer.

  2749. You may

  2750. have all

  2751. of that

  2752. and not

  2753. be found

  2754. in Christ.

  2755. And so

  2756. the encouragement

  2757. for you

  2758. is to

  2759. self-examination

  2760. and to

  2761. church

  2762. examination.

  2763. to bring

  2764. others around

  2765. you that

  2766. will help

  2767. you consider

  2768. the fruitfulness

  2769. of your

  2770. life.

  2771. Because it's

  2772. that fruitfulness

  2773. that proves

  2774. out the

  2775. faithfulness.

  2776. Not that

  2777. we're saved

  2778. by works,

  2779. but works

  2780. evidence.

  2781. Right?

  2782. Our

  2783. unshakable

  2784. faith in

  2785. the works

  2786. of Christ.

  2787. So again,

  2788. if you're in

  2789. my hearing

  2790. this morning

  2791. and you claim

  2792. to be a

  2793. Christian,

  2794. you're going

  2795. to be in

  2796. one of three

  2797. categories.

  2798. A confident

  2799. Christian,

  2800. an unconfident

  2801. Christian,

  2802. possibly not

  2803. a Christian

  2804. at all.

  2805. And I would

  2806. just plead

  2807. with you

  2808. to really

  2809. consider

  2810. the gospel

  2811. of Jesus

  2812. Christ.

  2813. If it's not

  2814. abundantly

  2815. clear to you

  2816. that you're

  2817. in the faith,

  2818. talk to

  2819. someone

  2820. about this.

  2821. Come and

  2822. find me.

  2823. If I'm not

  2824. available to

  2825. talk to you,

  2826. there are so

  2827. many people

  2828. in this

  2829. fellowship

  2830. that would

  2831. gladly share

  2832. the good

  2833. news of

  2834. Jesus with

  2835. you,

  2836. that you

  2837. would repent

  2838. and believe

  2839. in Him.

  2840. If you're

  2841. an unconfident

  2842. Christian,

  2843. the kind of

  2844. wonderful thing

  2845. is that it's

  2846. still a call

  2847. to repentance

  2848. and faith.

  2849. Turn from

  2850. your sin.

  2851. Those sins

  2852. that you have

  2853. carried into

  2854. this room

  2855. with you

  2856. that feel

  2857. like an

  2858. unbearable

  2859. baggage,

  2860. confess them

  2861. to God

  2862. and turn

  2863. to Christ.

  2864. Run to

  2865. the cross.

  2866. If you've

  2867. been there

  2868. before,

  2869. go back

  2870. again.

  2871. You may

  2872. find it's

  2873. the first

  2874. time you've

  2875. ever been

  2876. to the

  2877. cross and

  2878. the burden

  2879. of your

  2880. sin is

  2881. loosed

  2882. from your

  2883. back.

  2884. I would

  2885. hope that

  2886. each of us

  2887. would find

  2888. ourselves in

  2889. that first

  2890. category,

  2891. having a

  2892. full assurance

  2893. of our

  2894. faith and

  2895. persevering to

  2896. the very

  2897. end.

  2898. In closing,

  2899. I'm going to

  2900. read to you

  2901. from 2 Peter

    2 Peter 2 chapter mention

  2902. chapter 2

  2903. where the

  2904. Apostle Peter

  2905. writes in

  2906. verse 20

  2907. and 21,

  2908. For if,

  2909. after they

  2910. have escaped

  2911. the defilements

  2912. of the world

  2913. through the

  2914. knowledge of

  2915. our Lord

  2916. and Savior

  2917. Jesus Christ,

  2918. they are

  2919. again entangled

  2920. in them

  2921. and overcome,

  2922. the last

  2923. state has

  2924. become worse

  2925. for them

  2926. than the

  2927. first.

  2928. For it

  2929. would have

  2930. been better

  2931. for them

  2932. to have

  2933. never known

  2934. the way

  2935. of righteousness

  2936. than after

  2937. knowing it

  2938. to turn

  2939. back from

  2940. the holy

  2941. commandment

  2942. delivered to

  2943. them.

  2944. May we

  2945. not be

  2946. those

  2947. people.

  2948. Let's pray

  2949. together.
