  1. I invite you to take out your copy of God's Word and turn to Hebrews chapter 6.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  2. We're going to continue our verse-by-verse study of the book of Hebrews.

  3. !

  4. With today's text, which is Hebrews chapter 6, verses 9-12.

    Hebrews 6:9–12

  5. Before I read it, I remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  6. It was written for His glory and our good.

  7. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  8. Hebrews chapter 6, verse 9 and following.

    Hebrews 6:9

  9. Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things.

  10. Things that belong to salvation.

  11. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for His name in serving the saints, as you still do.

  12. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end.

  13. So that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

  14. This morning, as we look at these verses, I want to first draw your attention to the word that the author of Hebrews uses in addressing the church that this letter is written to.

  15. He gives them the title, beloved.

  16. Beloved.

  17. Which means loved ones or loved.

  18. It sounds so very churchy to say beloved.

  19. It's not a word I ever use, at least rarely outside of this room.

  20. But it just simply means loved ones.

  21. And He does this.

  22. He gives them this title.

  23. He addresses them in this way after saying in the beginning of verse 9, though we speak in this way.

  24. So just prior to this, verses 4 through 8, He has issued to them a warning.

  25. And it's a similar warning.

  26. It's been carrying all throughout the text so far.

  27. However, it is the large reason this letter was written that they would be careful to be sure that they are, in fact, in the faith.

  28. Remember that this little church had suffered much and they were being tempted to go back to Judaism.

  29. To forsake the following of Christ for the sake of avoiding discomfort.

  30. Avoiding the trial that was coming their way.

  31. And so just previously, by way of reminder, verses 4 through 8 of chapter 6, the author of Hebrews has written,

  32. For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift and have shared in the Holy Spirit,

  33. and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come,

  34. and then have fallen away to restore them again to repentance.

  35. Since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding Him up to contempt.

  36. For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated,

  37. receives a blessing from God.

  38. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed,

  39. and its end is to be burned.

  40. He has rebuked these Christians for being dull of hearing in chapter 5 and verse 11.

  41. And has spoken of the need to go on to maturity in chapter 6 verse 1.

  42. And then issued this very grave warning concerning land that has received the water of God's grace,

  43. and then produced only thorns and thistles.

  44. And what he says of it is that this land will be burned.

  45. This pastor, out of concern for those who may leave the faith,

  46. has warned them in chapter 2 and verse 1,

  47. to pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.

  48. What is he referring to?

  49. The gospel of Jesus Christ.

  50. That we can only be justified before God by grace alone,

  51. through faith alone,

  52. in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone.

  53. He is concerned that these he's writing to would be apostate.

  54. That they would leave the faith and show themselves to have never been Christians at all.

  55. He shares Paul's sentiment when Paul writes in 1 Timothy chapter 1 verse 18 and following,

    1 Timothy 1:18

  56. where Paul exhorts Timothy,

  57. wage the good warfare,

  58. holding faith and a good conscience.

  59. By rejecting this,

  60. referring to faith and a good conscience,

  61. some have made shipwreck of their faith.

  62. The author of Hebrews will go on in this chapter to say,

  63. in verses 19 and the beginning of verse 20,

  64. we have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

  65. A hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain

  66. where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf.

  67. Jesus Christ is the anchor for the soul that is storm-tossed.

  68. So he has spoken strongly about those who did not make Jesus the steadfast anchor of their souls.

  69. Who have drifted and shipwrecked their faith.

  70. And he is warning these Christians not to be deceived by false conversion.

  71. To not put too much credit in their religious experience.

  72. To not find themselves among the drifted and shipwrecked.

  73. And it is with this in mind,

  74. as he's completing that portion of his case,

  75. that he calls them beloved.

  76. It is significant.

  77. I hope that if it doesn't already arrest on this word,

  78. that after this morning, as you're reading your scripture,

  79. when you see the word beloved,

  80. it will cause you to pause and think about all that that term means for you in Christ.

  81. I believe for the author of Hebrews that there are two senses to this address.

  82. Reasons that he uses this term.

  83. I think first, he is simply saying,

  84. you are loved by me.

  85. I am penning this letter for your sake.

  86. I care deeply about you.

  87. It's a familial term.

  88. He is relating to them as their brother.

  89. He is saying to them,

  90. you are my brothers and you are my sisters.

  91. You are my beloved.

  92. Much like the apostle John does in 1 John 3,

    1 John 3:1

  93. verse 1 and following where he writes,

  94. see what kind of love the Father has given to us,

  95. that we should be called children of God.

  96. And so we are.

  97. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

  98. So the apostle John is saying to these Christians,

  99. we are brothers and sisters.

  100. And then at the beginning of verse 2,

  101. he says, beloved, we are God's children now.

  102. He is expressing to them a great affection for them.

  103. Secondly, and more importantly,

  104. he is saying you are loved by God.

  105. You are loved by God.

  106. In fact, the author's ability to call them beloved

  107. has its beginning in God's adoption of them.

  108. God's familial terminology.

  109. His inclusion of these people into his family.

  110. The author belongs to him and they to him

  111. because they all belong to God.

  112. Just after Jesus was baptized,

  113. Matthew 3, verse 17 tells us,

    Matthew 3:17

  114. and behold, a voice from heaven said,

  115. this is my beloved son

  116. with whom I am well pleased.

  117. And so if we are in Jesus,

  118. if we have been adopted in him,

  119. his righteousness given to us,

  120. our sin given to him,

  121. this term transfers to us.

  122. No longer enemies,

  123. but beloved children.

  124. And I hope this word prompts that in you.

  125. A contemplation about who you are in Christ.

  126. Have you noticed my use of this same term

  127. as I address you?

  128. I also mean it in both sentences.

  129. Have you noticed that I most regularly use it

  130. when I'm about to say something particularly difficult

  131. or when I'm trying to bring a particular comfort

  132. or draw your attention?

  133. I've already done it once this morning

  134. and I do that every Sunday morning.

  135. Beloved,

  136. this is God's word to us.

  137. I'm founding that in.

  138. My great love for you

  139. because of God's great love for us.

  140. He's written us this good book

  141. so we should pay attention to it

  142. is what I'm saying to you.

  143. God loves you

  144. and he's written you a word.

  145. Pay attention this morning.

  146. I'm saying I love you

  147. and more importantly,

  148. God loves you.

  149. And that is what the author of Hebrews

  150. is doing here

  151. for his original audience

  152. and for us.

  153. He has just said

  154. a particularly difficult thing

  155. and he is now bringing

  156. a particular comfort.

  157. He has warned them

  158. not to neglect such a great salvation

  159. by going on to maturity.

  160. And now he gives to them

  161. his confidence

  162. that they are in fact Christians

  163. and that they will persevere

  164. to the end.

  165. He is convinced

  166. of the sincerity

  167. of their love for Christ.

  168. And had they

  169. not separated by time

  170. and been friends,

  171. he would have agreed

  172. with the Puritan theologian

  173. William Pink.

  174. This is on your bulletin

  175. who said,

  176. God presently gives

  177. an everlasting assurance

  178. of salvation

  179. to all who love Christ

  180. sincerely.

  181. He is writing now

  182. at this point in the text

  183. as he has been warning

  184. and warning

  185. and warning

  186. and rebuking

  187. and warning

  188. some comfort to them.

  189. He is offering to them

  190. his confidence

  191. and he is hoping for

  192. and wanting them

  193. to have

  194. this confidence.

  195. And so that is a general outline

  196. for today's study.

  197. Number one,

  198. the author has confidence

  199. that they are Christians.

  200. Christians.

  201. And number two,

  202. the author wants them

  203. to have confidence

  204. that they are Christians.

  205. So first,

  206. he expresses

  207. this confidence.

  208. He says,

  209. yet in your case,

  210. beloved,

  211. he's just talked about

  212. people who appeared

  213. to be Christians

  214. and showed themselves

  215. not to be.

  216. Those who had drifted.

  217. Those who had make

  218. shipwreck of their faith.

  219. Those who did not

  220. go on to maturity.

  221. Those who rejected Jesus

  222. as the Christ.

  223. Yet in your case,

  224. beloved,

  225. we feel sure

  226. of better things.

  227. Things that belong

  228. to salvation.

  229. These were things

  230. that he could see

  231. and observe

  232. and been told of

  233. that existed

  234. with this little church.

  235. What are these things

  236. that belong to salvation?

  237. salvation.

  238. The Christian life

  239. will give evidence

  240. to its faithfulness.

  241. Good trees

  242. will bear

  243. good fruit.

  244. Now,

  245. there are certainly

  246. external evidences

  247. and we want to consider

  248. and we want to talk

  249. about those.

  250. But before we do,

  251. I want to talk

  252. just briefly

  253. this morning

  254. about internal

  255. evidences.

  256. A thing that cannot

  257. be measured

  258. from the outside.

  259. A thing that the author

  260. of Hebrews

  261. could not look

  262. upon them

  263. and know

  264. with great confidence.

  265. Because if you are

  266. in fact in Christ,

  267. if He has made you new,

  268. He has made you new

  269. by His Spirit.

  270. He has given to you

  271. the gift

  272. of a Spirit

  273. that indwells you,

  274. makes you new,

  275. causes you to walk

  276. in His ways.

  277. Right?

  278. Replaces that heart of stone

  279. with the heart of flesh.

  280. Paul writes about this

  281. in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:15–16

  282. verse 15-16,

  283. where he writes,

  284. For you did not receive

  285. the spirit of slavery

  286. to fall back into fear,

  287. but you have received

  288. the spirit of adoption

  289. as sons

  290. by whom we cry,

  291. Abba,

  292. Father,

  293. Daddy,

  294. Father.

  295. And then verse 16 says,

  296. The Spirit Himself

  297. bears witness

  298. with our spirit

  299. that we are children

  300. of God.

  301. Right?

  302. We have the spirit

  303. that testifies to this,

  304. is a seal of this,

  305. that communicates to us

  306. that we belong

  307. to God.

  308. No longer a spirit

  309. of fear,

  310. but a spirit of adoption

  311. as sons.

  312. Right?

  313. An internal knowing

  314. that we belong

  315. to God.

  316. This is a precious reality

  317. that the spirit of God

  318. speaks to us

  319. in this way

  320. if we have Him.

  321. J.I. Packer

  322. in his wonderful work

  323. Knowing God,

  324. which I commend to you,

  325. wrote this,

  326. If you want to judge

  327. how well a person

  328. understands Christianity,

  329. find out how much

  330. he makes

  331. of the thought

  332. of being God's child

  333. and having God

  334. as his Father.

  335. If this is not

  336. the thought

  337. that prompts

  338. and controls

  339. his worship

  340. and prayers

  341. and his whole outlook

  342. on life,

  343. it means that

  344. he does not

  345. understand Christianity

  346. very well at all.

  347. For everything

  348. that Christ taught,

  349. everything that makes

  350. the New Testament new

  351. and better than the old,

  352. everything that is

  353. distinctively Christian

  354. as opposed to

  355. merely Jewish,

  356. is summed up

  357. in the knowledge

  358. of the fatherhood

  359. of God.

  360. Father is the

  361. Christian name

  362. for God.

  363. This internal testimony

  364. works for our assurance.

  365. Jesus said in John 14

  366. in verse 27,

  367. Peace I leave with you,

  368. my peace I give to you,

  369. not as the world gives

  370. do I give to you.

  371. Let not your hearts

  372. be troubled,

  373. neither let them

  374. be afraid.

  375. Now, beloved,

  376. if you are in Christ,

  377. there are times

  378. in your life

  379. you may doubt

  380. your salvation.

  381. I am not saying

  382. that if you ever

  383. doubt your salvation,

  384. you are not in fact

  385. in Christ.

  386. But through prayer

  387. and fellowship

  388. and the study of the word,

  389. if you have the spirit,

  390. the spirit will

  391. give you this

  392. adoptive status,

  393. this understanding,

  394. right,

  395. will not make you

  396. in fear,

  397. but will grant you

  398. peace.

  399. So there's this internal,

  400. a bit subjective

  401. evidencing,

  402. but more specifically,

  403. I think what our author

  404. is writing about

  405. is external evidencing,

  406. right,

  407. again,

  408. things he could see

  409. and hear about,

  410. could report on.

  411. In verse 10,

  412. he expresses this,

  413. for God is not unjust

  414. so as to overlook

  415. your work,

  416. activity,

  417. outward sign,

  418. and the love

  419. that you have shown

  420. for his name

  421. in serving the saints,

  422. right,

  423. you once did it,

  424. and he goes on to say

  425. at the end of verse 10,

  426. as you still do.

  427. Not just past work

  428. and love,

  429. but also present work

  430. and love.

  431. Later on in the book

  432. of Hebrews,

  433. he writes in chapter 10,

  434. 32 and following,

  435. but recall the former days

  436. when after you were enlightened,

  437. you endured a hard struggle

  438. with sufferings,

  439. sometimes being publicly exposed

  440. to reproach and affliction,

  441. and sometimes being partners

  442. with those so treated.

  443. For you had compassion

  444. on those in prison,

  445. and you joyfully accepted

  446. the plundering of your property,

  447. since you knew

  448. that you yourselves

  449. had a better possession

  450. and an abiding one.

  451. There's one example

  452. in our text,

  453. in this book,

  454. of what the author of Hebrews

  455. here is talking about.

  456. This work and the love

  457. that you have shown

  458. for his name

  459. in serving the saints,

  460. as you still do.

  461. So, what's happening here

  462. is that people are being

  463. publicly mocked,

  464. in some cases imprisoned,

  465. and for the church,

  466. right,

  467. who's bearing the name

  468. of Christ,

  469. to identify

  470. with those in prison,

  471. to come to them

  472. and bring aid to them,

  473. because they weren't being

  474. taken care of in prison,

  475. they were just simply

  476. locked up.

  477. They were to be fed,

  478. they were to be fed

  479. by family.

  480. They were also then

  481. taking on

  482. the name

  483. of Christ.

  484. Christ

  485. had become

  486. most precious

  487. to them,

  488. a better possession

  489. and an abiding one,

  490. verse 34

  491. of chapter 10

  492. says,

  493. that they were willing

  494. to bear up

  495. under this reproach

  496. and this affliction,

  497. right,

  498. to love

  499. those

  500. who were being

  501. mistreated.

  502. And this is because

  503. they understood

  504. the commands

  505. of Christ.

  506. John chapter 13,

    John 13:34

  507. verse 34,

  508. and verse 35,

  509. Jesus says,

  510. a new commandment

  511. I give to you

  512. that you love

  513. one another.

  514. Just as I have loved you,

  515. you also

  516. are to love

  517. one another.

  518. By this,

  519. all people will know

  520. that you are my disciples

  521. if you have love

  522. for one another.

  523. And as a mental exercise,

  524. it is

  525. helpful

  526. to think about

  527. John 13,

  528. 35

  529. and replace

  530. in there

  531. all of the things

  532. we tend

  533. to think

  534. will make us

  535. known as Jesus'

  536. disciples.

  537. disciples

  538. and there is

  539. any measure

  540. of them.

  541. Going to church

  542. on Sunday morning

  543. does not necessarily

  544. mean you're a disciple

  545. of Jesus Christ.

  546. Claiming to be

  547. an evangelical

  548. does not necessarily

  549. make you a disciple

  550. of Jesus Christ.

  551. Voting for a particular

  552. party does not

  553. necessarily make you

  554. a disciple

  555. of Jesus Christ.

  556. Going on a mission trip

  557. every spring break

  558. does not necessarily

  559. make you

  560. a disciple

  561. of Jesus Christ.

  562. Jesus brings it down

  563. to this one thing.

  564. By this

  565. all people will know

  566. that you are my disciples

  567. if you have

  568. love

  569. for one another.

  570. And this bears

  571. itself out

  572. in so many ways

  573. which may include

  574. going to church

  575. on Sundays

  576. and going on

  577. mission trips.

  578. All types of things

  579. are

  580. loving.

  581. But just before that

  582. he has said

  583. just as I

  584. have loved you

  585. you also

  586. are to love

  587. one another.

  588. And so something

  589. we can be sure of

  590. is that the type

  591. of love

  592. he's talking about

  593. is a sacrificial

  594. love.

  595. It's a love

  596. that gives

  597. of yourself

  598. for the sake

  599. of

  600. for the highest

  601. good

  602. of

  603. another.

  604. The author

  605. of Hebrews

  606. is doing

  607. that very

  608. thing here.

  609. We live

  610. in a culture

  611. that defines

  612. love

  613. by the way

  614. in which

  615. the person

  616. receives

  617. the love.

  618. So if we

  619. say something

  620. to someone

  621. that they don't

  622. particularly like

  623. and it doesn't

  624. feel loving

  625. to them

  626. then our culture

  627. is very quick

  628. to dismiss

  629. the action

  630. as unloving.

  631. It's aimed

  632. at how

  633. the object

  634. feels

  635. about

  636. what's done.

  637. The author

  638. of Hebrews

  639. has just

  640. called them

  641. beloved.

  642. He just

  643. said you

  644. are loved

  645. ones.

  646. I love

  647. you.

  648. And he's

  649. been so

  650. very hard

  651. on them.

  652. He has

  653. just

  654. finished

  655. this

  656. harsh

  657. rebuke

  658. to now

  659. go on

  660. to be

  661. an

  662. encouragement.

  663. So love

  664. takes on

  665. all kinds

  666. of forms.

  667. But we

  668. know

  669. that the

  670. Christian

  671. life

  672. is a

  673. life

  674. of

  675. sacrificial

  676. love.

  677. And they

  678. had

  679. expressed

  680. this.

  681. And this

  682. was giving

  683. this

  684. pastor

  685. a

  686. confidence

  687. in their

  688. salvation.

  689. Secondly,

  690. the author

  691. wants them

  692. to have

  693. confidence

  694. that they

  695. are

  696. Christians.

  697. He doesn't

  698. want it

  699. to end

  700. just with

  701. his

  702. confidence.

  703. He also

  704. wants

  705. them

  706. to be

  707. confident.

  708. Verse 11

  709. he writes,

  710. and we

  711. desire

  712. each

  713. one of

  714. you

  715. to show

  716. the same

  717. earnestness

  718. to have

  719. the full

  720. assurance

  721. of hope

  722. until the

  723. end.

  724. Not

  725. some

  726. assurance,

  727. not a

  728. little

  729. measure

  730. of

  731. assurance,

  732. but full

  733. assurance,

  734. the full

  735. measure,

  736. complete

  737. assurance,

  738. an unshakable

  739. confidence is

  740. what he's

  741. talking about

  742. here.

  743. And not

  744. just today,

  745. but today

  746. and tomorrow

  747. and the

  748. next until

  749. the end.

  750. He wants

  751. them to

  752. persevere.

  753. He wants

  754. them to

  755. press on

  756. in knowing

  757. God and

  758. doing so

  759. to the

  760. end.

  761. And he

  762. gives us

  763. some ideas

  764. about how

  765. it is

  766. that we

  767. can have

  768. this

  769. assurance.

  770. So how

  771. is it

  772. that we

  773. can have

  774. full

  775. assurance?

  776. Number

  777. one,

  778. don't

  779. be

  780. lazy.

  781. Number

  782. one,

  783. don't

  784. be

  785. lazy.

  786. The first

  787. part of

  788. verse 12,

  789. he writes

  790. so that

  791. you may

  792. not be

  793. sluggish.

  794. I think

  795. that this

  796. particular

  797. challenge,

  798. we would

  799. not be

  800. sluggish,

  801. plagues

  802. the American

  803. church.

  804. I think

  805. many of

  806. us would

  807. find that

  808. we are

  809. far too

  810. often,

  811. far too

  812. apathetic,

  813. sitting

  814. back,

  815. seems

  816. that so

  817. often,

  818. comfort

  819. is our

  820. very

  821. worst

  822. enemy.

  823. We don't

  824. see that

  825. the stakes

  826. are high.

  827. We kind

  828. of float

  829. through

  830. life.

  831. And here

  832. he's saying

  833. the opposite.

  834. Don't

  835. be

  836. sluggish.

  837. Don't

  838. be

  839. lazy.

  840. Put

  841. yourself

  842. to

  843. the

  844. task.

  845. task.

  846. This

  847. word

  848. here

  849. translated

  850. in the

  851. ESV

  852. sluggish

  853. is the

  854. very

  855. same

  856. word

  857. translated

  858. in

  859. chapter

  860. 5

  861. and

  862. verse

  863. 11

  864. as

  865. dull.

  866. When he

  867. rebukes

  868. them

  869. that they're

  870. being

  871. dull

  872. of hearing,

  873. you could

  874. also say

  875. sluggish

  876. of hearing,

  877. lazy

  878. of hearing.

  879. The author

  880. of Hebrews

  881. has rebuked

  882. them for

  883. being sluggish

  884. in their

  885. hearing and

  886. does not

  887. also want

  888. them to

  889. become

  890. sluggish

  891. in their

  892. acting.

  893. And there's

  894. a connection

  895. between the

  896. two,

  897. between our

  898. hearing and

  899. our

  900. obedience.

  901. And I

  902. would suggest

  903. to you,

  904. although not

  905. in the

  906. text today,

  907. that there's

  908. also a

  909. connection

  910. between our

  911. obedience

  912. and our

  913. hearing.

  914. That God

  915. doesn't

  916. entrust us

  917. with more

  918. until we're

  919. obedient with

  920. what he's

  921. already

  922. taught us.

  923. That part

  924. of the

  925. growing up

  926. process

  927. is that when

  928. God gives

  929. you something

  930. to obey,

  931. you obey

  932. that thing

  933. and he

  934. continues to

  935. give you

  936. more to

  937. obey and

  938. grows you

  939. up into

  940. Christ.

  941. James,

  942. in James

    James 1:22–25

  943. chapter 1

  944. verse 22

  945. through 25,

  946. most of the

  947. book of James

  948. is about this

  949. very issue.

  950. He writes,

  951. but be

  952. doers of

  953. the word

  954. and not

  955. hearers only

  956. deceiving

  957. yourselves.

  958. Do not

  959. deceive

  960. yourself.

  961. What he's

  962. saying

  963. essentially

  964. is that

  965. you're

  966. not

  967. hearing

  968. it

  969. if

  970. you're

  971. not

  972. doing

  973. it.

  974. Verse 23,

  975. for if

  976. anyone is

  977. a hearer

  978. of the

  979. word

  980. and not

  981. a doer,

  982. he is

  983. like a

  984. man who

  985. looks

  986. intently

  987. at his

  988. natural

  989. face

  990. in a

  991. mirror.

  992. For

  993. he looks

  994. at himself

  995. and goes

  996. away

  997. and at

  998. once

  999. forgets

  1000. what

  1001. he was

  1002. like.

  1003. He's

  1004. merely

  1005. saying

  1006. you're

  1007. not

  1008. using

  1009. the

  1010. mirror

  1011. for

  1012. the

  1013. purpose

  1014. of

  1015. the

  1016. mirror.

  1017. You

  1018. don't

  1019. get

  1020. what

  1021. it's

  1022. for

  1023. verse 25,

  1024. but the

  1025. one who

  1026. looks

  1027. into the

  1028. perfect

  1029. law,

  1030. the

  1031. law

  1032. of

  1033. liberty

  1034. and

  1035. perseveres,

  1036. presses

  1037. on to

  1038. the

  1039. end

  1040. in

  1041. his

  1042. doing,

  1043. being

  1044. no

  1045. hearer

  1046. who

  1047. forgets,

  1048. but a

  1049. doer

  1050. who

  1051. acts,

  1052. he

  1053. will be

  1054. blessed

  1055. in his

  1056. doing.

  1057. Be

  1058. doers

  1059. and not

  1060. hearers

  1061. only.

  1062. Do not

  1063. be

  1064. lazy

  1065. in your

  1066. pursuit

  1067. of God.

  1068. So that's

  1069. to say it

  1070. in the

  1071. negative,

  1072. but I

  1073. think it's

  1074. also very

  1075. important

  1076. that we

  1077. say it

  1078. in the

  1079. positive.

  1080. So

  1081. secondly,

  1082. how can

  1083. you have

  1084. assurance?

  1085. Work.

  1086. Work

  1087. to have

  1088. assurance.

  1089. The last

  1090. part of

  1091. verse 11,

  1092. he says,

  1093. show the

  1094. same

  1095. earnestness

  1096. to have

  1097. full

  1098. assurance

  1099. and

  1100. hope

  1101. until

  1102. the

  1103. end.

  1104. This

  1105. idea of

  1106. earnestness

  1107. means a

  1108. serious

  1109. devotion

  1110. to,

  1111. to pick

  1112. up the

  1113. task of

  1114. having

  1115. full

  1116. assurance

  1117. of hope

  1118. until

  1119. the

  1120. end.

  1121. Beloved,

  1122. we are

  1123. far too

  1124. informed

  1125. by our

  1126. feelings.

  1127. I think

  1128. way too

  1129. often,

  1130. we wait

  1131. to be

  1132. obedient

  1133. until it

  1134. feels

  1135. good

  1136. to be

  1137. obedient.

  1138. We are

  1139. waiting

  1140. for a

  1141. feeling

  1142. of

  1143. assurance

  1144. and we

  1145. want

  1146. to have

  1147. feelings

  1148. and we

  1149. are not

  1150. stoics.

  1151. Feelings

  1152. can be

  1153. good

  1154. and they

  1155. can be

  1156. helpful.

  1157. They can

  1158. be informative

  1159. for us.

  1160. We want

  1161. our feelings

  1162. to coincide

  1163. with.

  1164. We want

  1165. them to

  1166. catch up

  1167. to the

  1168. truth.

  1169. So,

  1170. here he's

  1171. not saying

  1172. feel

  1173. assured.

  1174. He's

  1175. saying

  1176. have

  1177. earnestness.

  1178. Show

  1179. devotion

  1180. to.

  1181. Right?

  1182. Work

  1183. to have

  1184. assurance

  1185. of hope

  1186. until the

  1187. end.

  1188. Be a

  1189. doer

  1190. and let

  1191. the feeling

  1192. of it

  1193. catch up.

  1194. No one

  1195. can be

  1196. saved

  1197. by their

  1198. works.

  1199. The

  1200. gospel of

  1201. Jesus Christ

  1202. says this

  1203. to us

  1204. again

  1205. and again

  1206. and again.

  1207. We needed

  1208. Jesus'

  1209. righteousness,

  1210. his perfect

  1211. law

  1212. keeping.

  1213. Right?

  1214. No one

  1215. can be

  1216. saved

  1217. by their

  1218. works.

  1219. But

  1220. saving

  1221. faith

  1222. does

  1223. work.

  1224. Evidences

  1225. the

  1226. faith.

  1227. Again,

  1228. James,

  1229. he's

  1230. helpful

  1231. to us

  1232. in this

  1233. chapter 2

  1234. and verse

  1235. 14.

  1236. He says,

  1237. What good

  1238. is it,

  1239. my brothers,

  1240. if someone

  1241. says he

  1242. has faith

  1243. but does

  1244. not have

  1245. works?

  1246. Can that

  1247. faith

  1248. save him?

  1249. James is

  1250. making the

  1251. case that

  1252. he's merely

  1253. this person

  1254. he's referring

  1255. to,

  1256. just has

  1257. some

  1258. mental

  1259. assent.

  1260. says,

  1261. like my

  1262. children

  1263. say,

  1264. I believe

  1265. in Jesus

  1266. but they

  1267. don't know

  1268. him,

  1269. they have

  1270. not been

  1271. changed

  1272. by him,

  1273. they're not

  1274. being granted

  1275. the spirit

  1276. of Christ

  1277. and this

  1278. is the

  1279. great issue

  1280. of our

  1281. day.

  1282. I say it

  1283. over and

  1284. over again,

  1285. I feel like

  1286. a broken

  1287. record at

  1288. times.

  1289. The gospel

  1290. of Jesus

  1291. Christ

  1292. is that we

  1293. are saved

  1294. by grace

  1295. alone,

  1296. through faith

  1297. alone,

  1298. in Christ

  1299. alone.

  1300. God saves

  1301. those who

  1302. are his.

  1303. He moves

  1304. in them

  1305. to repentance

  1306. and faith.

  1307. He causes

  1308. them to turn

  1309. from sin

  1310. and to believe

  1311. in Christ.

  1312. To place

  1313. all of their

  1314. confidence

  1315. in who

  1316. Jesus

  1317. is.

  1318. And this

  1319. is a great

  1320. work of

  1321. God.

  1322. This is a

  1323. monergistic

  1324. work.

  1325. God saves,

  1326. God keeps.

  1327. It's in

  1328. that salvation

  1329. that we

  1330. now walk,

  1331. that we

  1332. evidence

  1333. it.

  1334. Just because

  1335. you have

  1336. raised your

  1337. hand or

  1338. walked down

  1339. an aisle

  1340. does not

  1341. necessarily

  1342. mean you're

  1343. a Christian.

  1344. What

  1345. evidences

  1346. your faith?

  1347. And remember

  1348. that he's

  1349. being encouraging

  1350. to this end.

  1351. Right?

  1352. He's being

  1353. encouraging to

  1354. this end.

  1355. I have a

  1356. confidence.

  1357. I want you

  1358. to have a

  1359. confidence.

  1360. Right?

  1361. I'm

  1362. observing.

  1363. You continue

  1364. to do

  1365. this work.

  1366. Be earnest

  1367. in your

  1368. working.

  1369. Paul writes

  1370. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:4–10

  1371. chapter 2

  1372. verses 4

  1373. through 10.

  1374. Some of

  1375. this will

  1376. sound familiar

  1377. from our

  1378. time with

  1379. the children.

  1380. But God

  1381. being rich

  1382. in mercy

  1383. because of

  1384. the great

  1385. love with

  1386. which he

  1387. loved us

  1388. even when

  1389. we were

  1390. dead in

  1391. our

  1392. trespasses.

  1393. Dead.

  1394. Inactive.

  1395. Unable.

  1396. He made

  1397. us alive

  1398. together

  1399. with

  1400. Christ.

  1401. By grace

  1402. you have

  1403. been saved

  1404. and raises

  1405. up with

  1406. him and

  1407. seated us

  1408. with him

  1409. in the

  1410. heavenly

  1411. places

  1412. in

  1413. Christ

  1414. Jesus.

  1415. So that

  1416. in the

  1417. coming

  1418. ages

  1419. he might

  1420. show

  1421. the

  1422. immeasurable

  1423. riches

  1424. of his

  1425. grace

  1426. and kindness

  1427. toward us

  1428. in Christ

  1429. Jesus.

  1430. Right?

  1431. In order

  1432. to put

  1433. on display

  1434. his

  1435. greatness

  1436. he has

  1437. saved

  1438. a people.

  1439. Verse

  1440. 8.

  1441. For by

  1442. grace you

  1443. have been

  1444. saved

  1445. through

  1446. faith.

  1447. And this

  1448. is not

  1449. your own

  1450. doing.

  1451. It is

  1452. the gift

  1453. of God

  1454. not a

  1455. result of

  1456. works

  1457. so that

  1458. no one

  1459. may boast.

  1460. And then

  1461. verse 10.

  1462. For we

  1463. are his

  1464. workmanship

  1465. created in

  1466. Christ

  1467. Jesus

  1468. for good

  1469. works.

  1470. He saved

  1471. us

  1472. for good

  1473. works

  1474. which

  1475. evidence

  1476. this saving

  1477. power in

  1478. our lives

  1479. which

  1480. God

  1481. prepared

  1482. beforehand

  1483. that we

  1484. should walk

  1485. in them.

  1486. So do

  1487. you want

  1488. to have

  1489. assurance?

  1490. Do you

  1491. want to

  1492. feel

  1493. assured?

  1494. Then get

  1495. to work.

  1496. Pick up

  1497. the scripture

  1498. and read

  1499. the commands.

  1500. How is it

  1501. that God

  1502. would have

  1503. me walk?

  1504. Learn

  1505. to love

  1506. righteousness.

  1507. Put off

  1508. old habits

  1509. by putting

  1510. on new

  1511. habits.

  1512. And you

  1513. will find

  1514. in doing

  1515. this if

  1516. you are

  1517. in Christ

  1518. your trajectory

  1519. will be

  1520. towards

  1521. holiness.

  1522. You will

  1523. find that

  1524. it gets

  1525. easier and

  1526. easier to

  1527. do these

  1528. things.

  1529. We never

  1530. become perfect

  1531. beside of

  1532. heaven but

  1533. we progress

  1534. toward it.

  1535. Always

  1536. making

  1537. progress

  1538. bit by

  1539. bit by

  1540. bit.

  1541. One

  1542. degree

  1543. of glory

  1544. to another

  1545. degree

  1546. of glory

  1547. as the

  1548. spirit of

  1549. Christ

  1550. powerfully

  1551. works

  1552. within us.

  1553. We are

  1554. meant to be

  1555. a people.

  1556. That is

  1557. why we are

  1558. left here.

  1559. We are

  1560. We still

  1561. carry the

  1562. baggage of

  1563. our flesh

  1564. around.

  1565. We have

  1566. a great

  1567. deal of

  1568. sympathy with

  1569. those who

  1570. are not

  1571. in Christ

  1572. because we

  1573. still feel

  1574. we still

  1575. experience

  1576. the effect

  1577. of a

  1578. fallen

  1579. nature.

  1580. But we have

  1581. been set

  1582. free from

  1583. sin.

  1584. We have

  1585. been delivered

  1586. from it.

  1587. We no

  1588. longer have

  1589. to sin

  1590. because we

  1591. have the

  1592. spirit of

  1593. Christ.

  1594. We can

  1595. be obedient

  1596. to him

  1597. and we're

  1598. meant to

  1599. be moving

  1600. ever

  1601. heavenward.

  1602. And this

  1603. is how we

  1604. exalt Christ

  1605. on the

  1606. earth.

  1607. This is

  1608. why as a

  1609. people,

  1610. as a church,

  1611. we're meant

  1612. to be drawn

  1613. together and

  1614. distinct in

  1615. that way.

  1616. That our

  1617. community would

  1618. look at us

  1619. and go,

  1620. what is it

  1621. with those

  1622. people?

  1623. They're

  1624. improving

  1625. people.

  1626. They're so

  1627. humble as

  1628. they walk

  1629. before their

  1630. God.

  1631. They're putting

  1632. off sin

  1633. and they're

  1634. putting on

  1635. righteousness.

  1636. What an

  1637. odd people.

  1638. And to

  1639. some that'll

  1640. be attractive

  1641. and to

  1642. some it'll

  1643. be repulsive.

  1644. So,

  1645. don't be

  1646. lazy.

  1647. Secondly,

  1648. work.

  1649. Third,

  1650. imitate.

  1651. Last part

  1652. of verse

  1653. 12,

  1654. the author

  1655. says,

  1656. but imitators

  1657. of those

  1658. who through

  1659. faith and

  1660. patience

  1661. inherit the

  1662. promises.

  1663. This life

  1664. is not

  1665. long.

  1666. We are

  1667. here but

  1668. a moment,

  1669. right?

  1670. A vapor

  1671. in the

  1672. wind.

  1673. The older

  1674. I get,

  1675. the more

  1676. I feel

  1677. that.

  1678. The life

  1679. seems to

  1680. be accelerating.

  1681. I've asked

  1682. people older

  1683. than me,

  1684. does it ever

  1685. slow down?

  1686. And I say,

  1687. nope,

  1688. it keeps

  1689. right on.

  1690. I turned

  1691. 39 at the

  1692. end of

  1693. January

  1694. and already

  1695. was dreading

  1696. 40,

  1697. like,

  1698. approaching

  1699. it.

  1700. I was

  1701. already

  1702. dreading

  1703. it.

  1704. And we

  1705. are almost

  1706. halfway there

  1707. already.

  1708. It felt

  1709. like yesterday

  1710. I was

  1711. going,

  1712. oh,

  1713. 39,

  1714. and I'm

  1715. going to

  1716. blink again,

  1717. and I'm

  1718. going to

  1719. be 40.

  1720. Life does

  1721. not last

  1722. that long,

  1723. but in

  1724. our struggle

  1725. with sin,

  1726. it feels

  1727. like forever.

  1728. God,

  1729. deliver me

  1730. from this

  1731. body of

  1732. death.

  1733. Every day

  1734. as I set

  1735. my face

  1736. towards him

  1737. just seems

  1738. like such

  1739. a struggle.

  1740. And to

  1741. walk in a

  1742. world that

  1743. is hostile

  1744. toward us,

  1745. as we're

  1746. following the

  1747. way of

  1748. God,

  1749. we are

  1750. bound to

  1751. get tired.

  1752. Just as

  1753. the Christians

  1754. of this

  1755. church that

  1756. this author

  1757. is writing

  1758. to were

  1759. getting

  1760. tired,

  1761. right?

  1762. They were

  1763. beleaguered,

  1764. right?

  1765. They were

  1766. worn out.

  1767. They had

  1768. suffered and

  1769. they would

  1770. suffer.

  1771. The author of

  1772. Hebrews was

  1773. writing to

  1774. them and

  1775. us to

  1776. tell us

  1777. and them

  1778. to imitate

  1779. those who

  1780. went before

  1781. us.

  1782. Look to

  1783. those who

  1784. finished well,

  1785. who already

  1786. finished and

  1787. who finished

  1788. well.

  1789. And the

  1790. author of

  1791. Hebrews is

  1792. likely setting

  1793. them and

  1794. us up for

  1795. the hall of

  1796. faith that

  1797. is chapter

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  1798. 11.

  1799. If you're

  1800. familiar with

  1801. the book

  1802. of Hebrews,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1803. chapter 11

  1804. lays out a

  1805. series of

  1806. people who

  1807. by faith

  1808. and patience

  1809. inherited

  1810. the promises.

  1811. And so I

  1812. would like for

  1813. us to go

  1814. there together.

  1815. So turn over

  1816. a few pages

  1817. if you will

  1818. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1819. chapter 11.

  1820. As we

  1821. think about

  1822. being

  1823. imitators,

  1824. now this

  1825. phrase,

  1826. through faith

  1827. and patience,

  1828. in extra

  1829. biblical Hebrew

  1830. writing,

  1831. was most

  1832. often attributed

  1833. to Abraham.

  1834. And it's

  1835. very possible

  1836. at this

  1837. point in

  1838. the Hebrew

  1839. listener's

  1840. mind,

  1841. that's where

  1842. the brain

  1843. goes immediately.

  1844. Oh,

  1845. Abraham,

  1846. faith and

  1847. patience.

  1848. And he

  1849. is talked

  1850. about most

  1851. extensively in

  1852. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1853. 11.

  1854. But I think

  1855. the author of

  1856. Hebrews also

  1857. means to

  1858. gather others

  1859. into that

  1860. number.

  1861. So yes,

  1862. Abraham,

  1863. but also

  1864. to add to

  1865. that.

  1866. And we

  1867. now have,

  1868. as I'm

  1869. going to

  1870. add to

  1871. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  1872. chapter 11,

  1873. not in

  1874. an inspired

  1875. sense,

  1876. but we

  1877. now have

  1878. many who

  1879. have gone

  1880. before us.

  1881. So I

  1882. commend

  1883. biography

  1884. to you

  1885. to read

  1886. about the

  1887. faith and

  1888. patience of

  1889. others as

  1890. well.

  1891. Verse 1 of

  1892. Hebrews 11

  1893. says,

  1894. now faith

  1895. is the

  1896. assurance

  1897. of things

  1898. hoped for,

  1899. the conviction

  1900. of things

  1901. not seen.

  1902. So as

  1903. we're tired,

  1904. as we're

  1905. beat down,

  1906. as we're

  1907. beleaguered,

  1908. as this

  1909. church was,

  1910. faith is

  1911. believing in

  1912. the promises

  1913. of God

  1914. that are out

  1915. there.

  1916. We're not

  1917. there yet,

  1918. right?

  1919. But we're

  1920. believing we

  1921. will get

  1922. there.

  1923. It's

  1924. believing

  1925. that.

  1926. And so

  1927. you can

  1928. see as

  1929. he goes

  1930. through this

  1931. text talking

  1932. about the

  1933. faith of

  1934. these people

  1935. that this

  1936. was a

  1937. patient

  1938. faith.

  1939. So faith

  1940. is the

  1941. assurance of

  1942. things hoped

  1943. for,

  1944. the conviction

  1945. of things

  1946. not seen.

  1947. For by it

  1948. the people

  1949. of old

  1950. received

  1951. their

  1952. commendation.

  1953. By faith

  1954. we understand

  1955. that the

  1956. universe was

  1957. created by

  1958. the word

  1959. of God

  1960. so that

  1961. what is

  1962. seen

  1963. was not

  1964. made

  1965. out of

  1966. things

  1967. that are

  1968. visible.

  1969. By faith

  1970. Abel

  1971. offered to

  1972. God a

  1973. more acceptable

  1974. sacrifice

  1975. than Cain

  1976. through which

  1977. he was

  1978. commended as

  1979. righteous,

  1980. God commending

  1981. him by

  1982. accepting

  1983. his gifts.

  1984. And through

  1985. his faith

  1986. though he

  1987. died he

  1988. still speaks.

  1989. To who?

  1990. To us.

  1991. By faith

  1992. Enoch was

  1993. taken up so

  1994. that he

  1995. should not

  1996. see death

  1997. and he

  1998. was not

  1999. found because

  2000. God had

  2001. taken him.

  2002. Now before

  2003. he was

  2004. taken he

  2005. was commended

  2006. as having

  2007. pleased

  2008. God.

  2009. And without

  2010. faith it is

  2011. impossible to

  2012. please him

  2013. for whoever

  2014. would draw

  2015. near to

  2016. God must

  2017. believe that

  2018. he exists

  2019. and that

  2020. he rewards

  2021. those who

  2022. seek him.

  2023. By faith

  2024. Noah being

  2025. warned by

  2026. God concerning

  2027. events as

  2028. yet unseen

  2029. in reverent

  2030. fear constructed

  2031. an ark for

  2032. the saving of

  2033. his household.

  2034. By this he

  2035. condemned the

  2036. world and

  2037. became an

  2038. heir of the

  2039. righteousness

  2040. that comes

  2041. by faith.

  2042. By faith

  2043. Abraham

  2044. obeyed when

  2045. he was called

  2046. to go out

  2047. to a place

  2048. that he was

  2049. to receive

  2050. as an

  2051. inheritance

  2052. and he

  2053. went out

  2054. not knowing

  2055. where he

  2056. was going.

  2057. By faith

  2058. he went to

  2059. live in

  2060. the land

  2061. of promise

  2062. as in

  2063. a foreign

  2064. land living

  2065. in tents

  2066. with Isaac

  2067. and Jacob

  2068. heirs with

  2069. him of

  2070. the same

  2071. promise.

  2072. For he

  2073. was looking

  2074. forward to

  2075. the city

  2076. that has

  2077. foundations

  2078. whose

  2079. designer and

  2080. builder

  2081. is God.

  2082. By faith

  2083. Sarah

  2084. herself received

  2085. power to

  2086. conceive even

  2087. when she was

  2088. past the age

  2089. since she

  2090. considered him

  2091. faithful who

  2092. had promised.

  2093. therefore

  2094. from one

  2095. man

  2096. and him

  2097. as good

  2098. as dead

  2099. were born

  2100. descendants

  2101. as many

  2102. as the

  2103. stars of

  2104. heaven

  2105. and as

  2106. many

  2107. as the

  2108. innumerable

  2109. grains of

  2110. sand

  2111. by the

  2112. seashore.

  2113. I just love

  2114. that he

  2115. calls Abraham

  2116. as good

  2117. as dead.

  2118. Verse 13

  2119. These all

  2120. died in

  2121. faith

  2122. not having

  2123. received

  2124. the things

  2125. promised

  2126. but having

  2127. seen them

  2128. and greeted

  2129. them from

  2130. afar

  2131. and having

  2132. acknowledged

  2133. that they

  2134. were strangers

  2135. and exiles

  2136. on the

  2137. earth.

  2138. They all

  2139. recognized

  2140. that there

  2141. was a

  2142. greater

  2143. promise

  2144. for them

  2145. and they

  2146. did not

  2147. know exactly

  2148. how the

  2149. greater

  2150. promise

  2151. would come

  2152. to pass.

  2153. We now

  2154. know it

  2155. comes to

  2156. pass in

  2157. Christ.

  2158. Verse 14

  2159. For people

  2160. who speak

  2161. thus make

  2162. it clear

  2163. that they

  2164. are seeking

  2165. a homeland.

  2166. If they

  2167. had been

  2168. thinking of

  2169. that land

  2170. from which

  2171. they had

  2172. gone out

  2173. they would

  2174. have had

  2175. opportunity

  2176. to return.

  2177. But as

  2178. it is

  2179. they desire

  2180. a better

  2181. country

  2182. that is

  2183. a heavenly

  2184. one.

  2185. Therefore

  2186. God is

  2187. not ashamed

  2188. to be

  2189. called

  2190. their

  2191. God

  2192. for he

  2193. has

  2194. prepared

  2195. for them

  2196. a city.

  2197. By

  2198. faith

  2199. Abraham

  2200. when he

  2201. was tested

  2202. offered

  2203. up

  2204. Isaac

  2205. and he

  2206. who had

  2207. received

  2208. the promises

  2209. was in

  2210. the act

  2211. of offering

  2212. up his

  2213. only son

  2214. of whom

  2215. it was

  2216. said

  2217. through

  2218. Isaac

  2219. shall

  2220. your

  2221. offspring

  2222. be

  2223. named.

  2224. He

  2225. considered

  2226. that God

  2227. was able

  2228. even to

  2229. raise him

  2230. from the

  2231. dead

  2232. from which

  2233. figuratively

  2234. speaking

  2235. he did

  2236. receive him

  2237. back.

  2238. By faith

  2239. Isaac

  2240. invoked

  2241. future

  2242. blessings

  2243. on Jacob

  2244. and Esau.

  2245. By faith

  2246. Jacob

  2247. when dying

  2248. blessed

  2249. each

  2250. of the

  2251. sons

  2252. of

  2253. Joseph

  2254. bowing

  2255. in

  2256. worship

  2257. over

  2258. the

  2259. head

  2260. of

  2261. his

  2262. staff.

  2263. By

  2264. faith

  2265. Joseph

  2266. at the

  2267. end

  2268. of

  2269. his

  2270. life

  2271. made

  2272. mention

  2273. of

  2274. the

  2275. exodus

  2276. of

  2277. the

  2278. Israelites

  2279. and

  2280. gave

  2281. directions

  2282. concerning

  2283. his

  2284. bones.

  2285. By

  2286. faith

  2287. Moses

  2288. when he

  2289. was born

  2290. was hidden

  2291. for three

  2292. months

  2293. by his

  2294. parents

  2295. because

  2296. they

  2297. saw

  2298. that

  2299. the

  2300. child

  2301. was

  2302. beautiful

  2303. and

  2304. they

  2305. were

  2306. not

  2307. afraid

  2308. of

  2309. the

  2310. king's

  2311. edict.

  2312. By

  2313. faith

  2314. Moses

  2315. when he

  2316. was

  2317. grown

  2318. up

  2319. refused

  2320. to be

  2321. called

  2322. the

  2323. son

  2324. of

  2325. Pharaoh's

  2326. daughter

  2327. choosing

  2328. rather

  2329. to be

  2330. mistreated

  2331. with

  2332. the

  2333. people

  2334. of

  2335. God

  2336. than

  2337. to

  2338. enjoy

  2339. the

  2340. fleeting

  2341. pleasures

  2342. of

  2343. sin.

  2344. He

  2345. considered

  2346. the

  2347. reproach

  2348. of

  2349. Christ

  2350. greater

  2351. wealth

  2352. than

  2353. the

  2354. treasures

  2355. of

  2356. Egypt

  2357. for

  2358. he

  2359. was

  2360. looking

  2361. to

  2362. the

  2363. reward.

  2364. By

  2365. faith

  2366. he

  2367. kept

  2368. the

  2369. Passover

  2370. and

  2371. sprinkled

  2372. the

  2373. blood

  2374. so

  2375. that

  2376. the

  2377. destroyer

  2378. of

  2379. the

  2380. firstborn

  2381. may

  2382. not

  2383. touch

  2384. them.

  2385. By

  2386. faith

  2387. the

  2388. people

  2389. crossed

  2390. the

  2391. Red

  2392. Sea

  2393. as

  2394. on

  2395. dry

  2396. land

  2397. but

  2398. the

  2399. Egyptians

  2400. when

  2401. they

  2402. attempted

  2403. to

  2404. do

  2405. the

  2406. same

  2407. were

  2408. drowned.

  2409. By

  2410. faith

  2411. the

  2412. walls

  2413. of

  2414. Jericho

  2415. fell

  2416. down

  2417. after

  2418. they

  2419. had

  2420. been

  2421. circled

  2422. for

  2423. seven

  2424. days.

  2425. By

  2426. faith

  2427. Rahab

  2428. the

  2429. prostitute

  2430. did

  2431. not

  2432. perish

  2433. with

  2434. those

  2435. who

  2436. were

  2437. disobedient

  2438. because

  2439. she

  2440. had

  2441. given

  2442. a

  2443. friendly

  2444. welcome

  2445. to

  2446. the

  2447. spies.

  2448. And

  2449. what

  2450. more

  2451. shall

  2452. I

  2453. say?

  2454. For

  2455. time

  2456. would

  2457. fail

  2458. me

  2459. to

  2460. tell

  2461. of

  2462. Gideon,

  2463. Barak,

  2464. Samson,

  2465. Jephthah,

  2466. of David

  2467. and Samuel

  2468. and the

  2469. prophets

  2470. who

  2471. through

  2472. faith

  2473. conquered

  2474. kingdoms,

  2475. enforced

  2476. justice,

  2477. obtained

  2478. promises,

  2479. stopped

  2480. the mouths

  2481. of lions,

  2482. quenched

  2483. the power

  2484. of fire,

  2485. escaped

  2486. the edge

  2487. of the

  2488. sword,

  2489. were made

  2490. strong

  2491. out of

  2492. weakness,

  2493. became

  2494. mighty,

  2495. foreign

  2496. armies

  2497. to

  2498. flight.

  2499. He's

  2500. going

  2501. through

  2502. the

  2503. entire

  2504. Old

  2505. Testament

  2506. telling

  2507. us

  2508. and them

  2509. pay

  2510. attention

  2511. to

  2512. the

  2513. faith

  2514. and

  2515. patience

  2516. of

  2517. those

  2518. who

  2519. have

  2520. gone

  2521. before

  2522. you.

  2523. Be

  2524. imitators

  2525. of

  2526. them.

  2527. This

  2528. by the

  2529. way

  2530. is the

  2531. text

  2532. that

  2533. makes

  2534. a lot

  2535. of

  2536. people

  2537. think

  2538. this

  2539. was

  2540. originally

  2541. a

  2542. sermon

  2543. that

  2544. was

  2545. recorded

  2546. because

  2547. he

  2548. says

  2549. he

  2550. doesn't

  2551. have

  2552. time

  2553. and

  2554. he's

  2555. writing

  2556. a

  2557. letter.

  2558. But

  2559. verse

  2560. 35

  2561. women

  2562. received

  2563. back

  2564. their

  2565. dead

  2566. by

  2567. resurrection.

  2568. Some

  2569. were

  2570. tortured

  2571. refusing

  2572. to

  2573. accept

  2574. release

  2575. so they

  2576. might

  2577. rise

  2578. again

  2579. to

  2580. a

  2581. better

  2582. life.

  2583. Others

  2584. suffered

  2585. mocking

  2586. and flogging

  2587. and even

  2588. chains

  2589. and

  2590. imprisonment.

  2591. They

  2592. were stoned.

  2593. They

  2594. were sawn

  2595. in two.

  2596. They

  2597. were killed

  2598. with a

  2599. sword.

  2600. They

  2601. went

  2602. about

  2603. in skins

  2604. of

  2605. sheep

  2606. and goats

  2607. destitute,

  2608. afflicted,

  2609. mistreated,

  2610. of whom

  2611. the world

  2612. was not

  2613. worthy,

  2614. wandering

  2615. about in

  2616. deserts and

  2617. mountains and

  2618. in dens

  2619. and caves

  2620. of the

  2621. earth.

  2622. You

  2623. were not

  2624. alone

  2625. in your

  2626. suffering.

  2627. Verse 39

  2628. And all

  2629. these,

  2630. though commended

  2631. through their

  2632. faith,

  2633. did not

  2634. receive

  2635. what was

  2636. promised,

  2637. since God

  2638. had provided

  2639. something better

  2640. for us,

  2641. that apart

  2642. from us,

  2643. they should

  2644. not be

  2645. made

  2646. perfect.

  2647. He's talking

  2648. about the

  2649. coming of

  2650. Christ and

  2651. the saving

  2652. of the

  2653. church.

  2654. Chapter

  2655. 12

  2656. Therefore,

  2657. since we

  2658. are surrounded

  2659. by so great

  2660. a cloud of

  2661. witnesses,

  2662. let us

  2663. also lay

  2664. aside every

  2665. weight and

  2666. sin which

  2667. clings so

  2668. closely,

  2669. and let

  2670. us run

  2671. with endurance

  2672. the race

  2673. that is set

  2674. before us.

  2675. Run with

  2676. endurance,

  2677. not lazily,

  2678. not lackadaisically,

  2679. not sluggish,

  2680. but competing,

  2681. running,

  2682. being earnest

  2683. in this,

  2684. and doing

  2685. so with

  2686. endurance,

  2687. with

  2688. patience.

  2689. Verse 2,

  2690. looking to

  2691. Jesus,

  2692. the founder

  2693. and perfecter

  2694. of our faith,

  2695. who for the

  2696. joy that was

  2697. set before him

  2698. endured the

  2699. cross,

  2700. despising the

  2701. shame and

  2702. acceded at

  2703. the right

  2704. hand of the

  2705. throne of

  2706. God.

  2707. Consider him

  2708. who endured

  2709. from sinners

  2710. such hostility

  2711. against himself,

  2712. so that you

  2713. may not

  2714. grow weary

  2715. or faint-hearted.

  2716. So as we

  2717. look to be

  2718. imitators

  2719. of those who

  2720. have gone

  2721. before us

  2722. in this

  2723. life,

  2724. we are also

  2725. meant to

  2726. look to

  2727. Christ,

  2728. who suffered

  2729. for our

  2730. sake.

  2731. Only

  2732. undeserving

  2733. sufferer who

  2734. has ever

  2735. existed,

  2736. who had no

  2737. fault in him

  2738. whatsoever,

  2739. but took

  2740. on our

  2741. fault and

  2742. suffered in

  2743. our stead.

  2744. Took away

  2745. God's wrath

  2746. due us,

  2747. and he

  2748. drank it

  2749. to its

  2750. end.

  2751. It's an

  2752. astounding

  2753. thing,

  2754. beloved,

  2755. that if you

  2756. are in fact

  2757. in Christ,

  2758. you have

  2759. been changed.

  2760. It's

  2761. doctrine of

  2762. regeneration.

  2763. You're not

  2764. the same

  2765. old you.

  2766. You're a

  2767. new

  2768. creation,

  2769. creation,

  2770. and you're

  2771. being given

  2772. by the

  2773. spirit

  2774. new

  2775. impulse.

  2776. So just

  2777. as the

  2778. author of

  2779. Hebrews is

  2780. looking at

  2781. this little

  2782. faithful church,

  2783. just as I

  2784. can look out

  2785. on so many

  2786. of you,

  2787. some of you I

  2788. don't know that

  2789. well,

  2790. but many of you

  2791. I can look at

  2792. and say,

  2793. I have a

  2794. confidence.

  2795. confidence.

  2796. We also

  2797. want to have

  2798. our own

  2799. confidence.

  2800. I want you

  2801. to have

  2802. a confidence

  2803. that you're

  2804. in Christ

  2805. because if

  2806. you don't,

  2807. you may

  2808. not be

  2809. in Christ.

  2810. I don't

  2811. mean that

  2812. to cause

  2813. fear in

  2814. you unless

  2815. you need

  2816. to be

  2817. fearful.

  2818. Maybe

  2819. your end

  2820. is destruction

  2821. and your

  2822. eternity

  2823. is torment

  2824. and separation

  2825. from our

  2826. Most High

  2827. God.

  2828. These are

  2829. the loving,

  2830. kind words

  2831. of God

  2832. for us

  2833. this morning

  2834. that we

  2835. would repent

  2836. and believe,

  2837. that we

  2838. would press

  2839. on,

  2840. that we

  2841. would work

  2842. to have

  2843. assurance.

  2844. And so

  2845. in summary,

  2846. some application.

  2847. First,

  2848. be part

  2849. of a

  2850. faithful church

  2851. if you

  2852. are not

  2853. already.

  2854. Be part

  2855. of a

  2856. biblical

  2857. church.

  2858. For the

  2859. sake of

  2860. time,

  2861. I can't

  2862. explain

  2863. everything

  2864. I mean

  2865. by that.

  2866. Be part

  2867. of a

  2868. church.

  2869. Beloved,

  2870. the church

  2871. is not

  2872. an

  2873. afterthought.

  2874. You're

  2875. not the

  2876. center

  2877. of the

  2878. gospel

  2879. and then

  2880. God

  2881. says,

  2882. oh,

  2883. sure,

  2884. and also

  2885. gather,

  2886. that could

  2887. be good

  2888. for you.

  2889. God

  2890. saved a

  2891. people,

  2892. he saved

  2893. a church,

  2894. and these

  2895. local expressions

  2896. of it are

  2897. given tools

  2898. to help

  2899. us in

  2900. this way,

  2901. to help

  2902. you have

  2903. assurance.

  2904. you need

  2905. followers of

  2906. Jesus Christ

  2907. to have a

  2908. confidence in

  2909. you,

  2910. and you

  2911. need opportunity

  2912. to love

  2913. what God

  2914. loves,

  2915. to give

  2916. that evidence.

  2917. I love

  2918. God's

  2919. people,

  2920. and I

  2921. serve

  2922. God's

  2923. people.

  2924. Christianity

  2925. is not a

  2926. solo sport.

  2927. Secondly,

  2928. be confident.

  2929. press on

  2930. to have

  2931. assurance.

  2932. Assurance

  2933. is such

  2934. a blessing.

  2935. I still

  2936. sin.

  2937. I have

  2938. times where

  2939. I do

  2940. things that

  2941. would say

  2942. to God,

  2943. I am not

  2944. your son.

  2945. I'm going

  2946. to act

  2947. in total

  2948. contradiction

  2949. to the

  2950. reality that

  2951. you love

  2952. me and

  2953. you've

  2954. given me

  2955. good

  2956. commands.

  2957. But it

  2958. is a

  2959. wonderful

  2960. thing when

  2961. that happens

  2962. to get

  2963. to go to

  2964. the cross

  2965. of Christ

  2966. and rejoice

  2967. that I

  2968. am

  2969. his.

  2970. That he

  2971. accomplished

  2972. a work

  2973. in me

  2974. and that

  2975. is

  2976. unshakable

  2977. because

  2978. it's

  2979. his

  2980. doing.

  2981. I sit

  2982. and counsel

  2983. so many

  2984. that sin

  2985. and they

  2986. just don't

  2987. know.

  2988. I want

  2989. you to

  2990. know.

  2991. It's a

  2992. good thing

  2993. to know.

  2994. So be

  2995. confident,

  2996. but be

  2997. confident by

  2998. not being

  2999. lazy,

  3000. by working,

  3001. pressing on,

  3002. being earnest

  3003. and knowing,

  3004. and by

  3005. imitating

  3006. those who

  3007. have gone

  3008. before you,

  3009. faith and

  3010. patience

  3011. receive the

  3012. promise,

  3013. and especially

  3014. by imitating

  3015. Christ.

  3016. Let's pray

  3017. together.
