  1. Let me invite you to join me in your copy of God's Word in Hebrews chapter 7.

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  2. We had yesterday a 10-year family reunion for the church, and I'm tired.

  3. ! Maybe that's why words aren't coming out of my mouth the way they should.

  4. Our text for this morning is Hebrews chapter 7, verses 11 through 19 as we continue our verse-by-verse study.

    Hebrews 7:11–19

  5. Of this letter. Before I read it, beloved, let me remind you this is God's Word to us written for His glory and our good.

  6. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  7. Verse 11 of Hebrews chapter 7.

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  8. Now, if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood, for under it the people received the law,

  9. what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek,

  10. rather than one named after the order of Aaron?

  11. For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

  12. For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.

  13. For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe, Moses said nothing about priests.

  14. This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,

  15. who has become a priest not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent,

  16. but by the power of an indestructible life.

  17. For it is witnessed of him, you are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

  18. For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness,

  19. for the law made nothing perfect.

  20. But on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

  21. Before we begin our consideration of this morning's text about Melchizedek,

  22. I would like to re-deliver the summary I gave you last week of the author of Hebrews,

  23. when he begins mentioning Melchizedek back in chapter 5.

  24. Recall that the author first mentioned him in speaking of Jesus' earthly priesthood.

  25. He goes on in Hebrews chapter 5, verse 11 to say,

    Hebrews 5:11

  26. about this we have much to say.

  27. And he's referring to Jesus' Melchizedekian priesthood.

  28. And it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.

  29. So he stops to rebuke this little, tired, suffering church.

  30. This letter is meant to be pressing them on in their faithful endurance.

  31. And he stops at this point and rebukes them.

  32. He says, you have become dull of hearing.

  33. And he warns them against apostasy, against abandoning the faith altogether.

  34. And he then exhorts his hearers to faithful and patient endurance

  35. to inherit the promises, chapter 6 and verse 12.

  36. And he roots the surety of those promises in Jesus' person and work.

  37. Chapter 6, verses 19 and 20.

  38. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

  39. A hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain.

  40. Where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf.

  41. Having become a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  42. So we've been following an arc, I pointed out to you last week,

  43. over about seven or eight weeks.

  44. Beginning in chapter 5, verse 10.

  45. Being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  46. To, verse 20 of chapter 6.

  47. Having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

  48. He picks back up that theme here again.

  49. So, we've come back to our author.

  50. Explaining the significance of what it means that Jesus is a Melchizedekian priest.

  51. In the beginning of chapter 7, we saw last week that Melchizedek foreshadows Christ's offices.

  52. That he foreshadows Christ's qualifications.

  53. And that he foreshadows Christ's superiority.

  54. And the author is driving his original hearers and us in our study this morning.

  55. To this point found in Hebrews chapter 7 and verse 25.

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  56. Consequently, he, being Christ, is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God.

  57. Through him, being Christ.

  58. Since he always lives to make intercession for them.

  59. This is the case that is being built.

  60. It's that Christ is able to save forever.

  61. To be able to save perfectly all those who come to God through him because he lives.

  62. And because he lives, he intercedes for us.

  63. You see, the Hebrew believers were being tempted through their suffering to abandon their faith.

  64. And go back to the comfort of Judaism.

  65. And the author of this letter wants them to avoid doing so.

  66. Out of a great pastoral care for them.

  67. He's saying, don't go back.

  68. Don't make shipwreck of your faith.

  69. Continue to pursue Christ.

  70. He wants to see them and us faithful to the end.

  71. The question for us is, will we persevere?

  72. Will we persevere?

  73. Now, if we are Christ, we most certainly will.

  74. But we are living in that time right now.

  75. Will I be faithful to the end?

  76. Now, we most likely will not be tempted to turn to Judaism.

  77. But we very well may be tempted in the trial of life, in the discomfort of living as a people for the praise of God,

  78. to turn to some other religion of the world.

  79. And this is the simplicity of it.

  80. You have two basic religions in the world.

  81. And everybody ascribes to one of the two.

  82. The one that we're commending this morning is to place your faith in Jesus Christ.

  83. Saving faith.

  84. To throw all of yourself on Him.

  85. Turn from your sin.

  86. And plead His person and His work for the salvation of your soul.

  87. The other, in whatever form it takes,

  88. merely works to be found right before God.

  89. Whether a person recognizes that there is a God,

  90. will be good enough in some measure,

  91. will live by their own command and their own rule.

  92. Everyone who doesn't place believing faith in Christ,

  93. who doesn't recognize that nothing they can do can make them accepted,

  94. can make them right,

  95. is following this way.

  96. And Judaism is that.

  97. It fits in that category.

  98. So we're not so different from the Hebrew believers.

  99. Temple worship was meant to point to something greater.

  100. It was meant to say to the Hebrews,

  101. not this,

  102. but this is a dress rehearsal for something much grander.

  103. We want you to see what you really need

  104. as this ironic worship is carried out.

  105. Now, an example of a failure to persevere,

  106. as far as we can tell,

  107. has come to light just in the past couple of weeks.

  108. Some of you may be familiar with Josh Harris.

  109. Wrote half a dozen books.

  110. I Kissed Dating Goodbye is the most popular of them.

  111. Not the best of them,

  112. but the most popular of them.

  113. Pastored a Sovereign Grace church for 14 years,

  114. I believe.

  115. He recently announced on social media

  116. that he was divorcing his wife.

  117. Prior to that,

  118. he had just repudiated a bunch of his writing.

  119. He's divorcing his wife,

  120. and just here recently,

  121. has decided that he's no longer a Christian.

  122. I want to read to you,

  123. this is the post that he put on Instagram,

  124. and I do this with a heavy heart.

  125. I don't,

  126. none of this is standing in judgment of Josh Harris,

  127. but to help you to see the danger,

  128. outward appearance.

  129. Who would have ever thought,

  130. who would have ever thought

  131. we'd be reading these words

  132. written by Josh Harris?

  133. He says,

  134. My heart is full of gratitude.

  135. I wish you could see all the messages

  136. people sent me after the announcement

  137. of my divorce.

  138. They are expressions of love,

  139. though they are saddened

  140. or even strongly disapprove of the decision.

  141. I am learning that no group

  142. has the market cornered on grace.

  143. This week,

  144. I have received grace from Christians,

  145. atheists,

  146. evangelicals,

  147. ex-evangelicals,

  148. straight people,

  149. LGBTQ people,

  150. and everyone in between.

  151. Of course,

  152. there have also been strong words of rebuke

  153. from religious people.

  154. While not always pleasant,

  155. I know they are seeking to love me.

  156. They have also been spiteful,

  157. hateful comments that angered and hurt me.

  158. The information that was left out

  159. of our announcement

  160. concerning the divorce

  161. is that I have undergone

  162. a massive shift

  163. in regard to my faith in Jesus.

  164. The popular phrase for this

  165. is deconstruction.

  166. The biblical phrase

  167. is falling away.

  168. By all the measurements that I have

  169. for defining a Christian,

  170. I am not a Christian.

  171. And I appreciate he's at least

  172. intellectually honest.

  173. He's willing to take the Bible

  174. as the framework for Christianity.

  175. But he's saying,

  176. I can't call myself that

  177. any longer.

  178. He goes on,

  179. Many people tell me

  180. that there is a different way

  181. to practice faith.

  182. And I want to remain open to this,

  183. but I'm not there now.

  184. Then he quotes Martin Luther,

  185. which is interesting.

  186. But he says,

  187. Martin Luther said

  188. that the entire life of believers

  189. should be repentance.

  190. There's beauty in that sentiment

  191. regardless of your view of God.

  192. I have lived in repentance

  193. for the past several years,

  194. repenting of my self-righteousness,

  195. my fear-based approach to life,

  196. the teaching of my books,

  197. my views of women in the church,

  198. and my approach to parenting,

  199. to name a few.

  200. But I specifically want to add

  201. to this list now

  202. to the LGBTQ plus community,

  203. I want to say that I'm sorry

  204. for the views that I taught in my books

  205. and as a pastor regarding sexuality.

  206. I regret standing against marriage equality,

  207. for not affirming you

  208. and your place in the church,

  209. and for any ways that my writing

  210. and speaking contributed

  211. to a culture of exclusion and bigotry.

  212. I hope you can forgive me.

  213. Now, there's certainly a lot of sentiment

  214. in there that's good and healthy.

  215. There's some things he says

  216. that you can say,

  217. yes, well, we would want to apologize

  218. for contributing to cultures of bigotry,

  219. to be sure.

  220. But you can see the way in which it seems

  221. as if he's entirely abandoned

  222. the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  223. even at his admission.

  224. Now, we cannot know with any finality

  225. what is going on in the soul of Josh Harris.

  226. I'd invite you to join me in praying for him.

  227. He has many close friends

  228. who are walking beside him

  229. and working with him.

  230. I've even seen him tongue-in-cheek say

  231. they're welcome to hang out with him

  232. because now it would be considered evangelism.

  233. We would like to think

  234. that Josh has come to just a low place

  235. in his life

  236. and he is, in fact, in Christ.

  237. But, either way,

  238. this points to the reality

  239. that the danger is real.

  240. The temptation is out there.

  241. He, as a public figure,

  242. got a lot of heat.

  243. And he found himself,

  244. rather than standing firm in Christ,

  245. Christ being the anchor of his soul

  246. and pressing on in truth,

  247. abandoning faith.

  248. Abandoning it for something else.

  249. The temptation is there.

  250. And as you continue in your pursuit

  251. of a life pleasing to God

  252. in Christ Jesus,

  253. you will experience trial

  254. and you will experience discomfort.

  255. Hold, beloved.

  256. Hold.

  257. This is the message of Hebrews.

  258. And this morning's text

  259. makes this point

  260. by showing us two things.

  261. Number one,

  262. the insufficiency

  263. of the Aaronic priesthood

  264. and the Old Covenant.

  265. And two,

  266. the sufficiency

  267. of the Melchizedekian priesthood

  268. and the New Covenant.

  269. If you're taking notes,

  270. you could just say

  271. insufficiency, O-T,

  272. insufficiency, N-T.

  273. First,

  274. the insufficiency

  275. of the Aaronic priesthood

  276. and the Old Covenant.

  277. See this in verses 11 through 14.

  278. Now, if perfection

  279. had been attainable

  280. through the Levitical priesthood,

  281. for under it

  282. the people received the law,

  283. what further need

  284. would there have been

  285. for another priest

  286. to arise

  287. after the order of Melchizedek

  288. rather than one named

  289. after the order of Aaron?

  290. For when there is a change

  291. in the priesthood,

  292. there is necessarily

  293. a change in the law as well.

  294. For the one of whom

  295. these things are spoken

  296. belong to another tribe

  297. from which no one

  298. has ever served

  299. at the altar.

  300. For it is evident

  301. that our Lord

  302. was descended from Judah

  303. and in connection

  304. with that tribe,

  305. Moses said nothing

  306. about priests.

  307. Now, we talk about this

  308. a bit at length

  309. about the different order

  310. and why it was

  311. that Christ came from

  312. the Melchizedekian order

  313. versus the Aaronic order

  314. and he's just continuing

  315. to make that point here.

  316. He's saying,

  317. if the law had been able

  318. to make us perfect,

  319. then why not just have

  320. another priest in the order

  321. of Aaron?

  322. But because it couldn't,

  323. verse 11 is making this point,

  324. if perfection had been attainable,

  325. they couldn't bring about perfection,

  326. then a different type of priest

  327. was necessary.

  328. A different priest

  329. that came from

  330. a different line.

  331. Jesus coming from,

  332. verse 14,

  333. the line of Judah

  334. was not allowed to serve

  335. as an Aaronic priest,

  336. a Levitical priest,

  337. but he was appointed by God,

  338. not because he was

  339. in a lineage of man,

  340. but because God

  341. appointed him

  342. a priest.

  343. And this idea of perfection,

  344. we very quickly

  345. think of it

  346. in terms of maturity,

  347. being grown up in.

  348. Now, certainly,

  349. if you were able

  350. to keep the law perfectly,

  351. you could attain

  352. to such perfection.

  353. But the meaning

  354. is a bit broader than that,

  355. and we get a clue of that

  356. as we look further down

  357. in the text,

  358. the parenthetical

  359. in verse 19,

  360. where the writer of Hebrews says,

  361. for the law made

  362. nothing perfect.

  363. Same Greek word.

  364. And he ties it

  365. into this idea

  366. of being able

  367. to draw near

  368. to God.

  369. So it's an ability

  370. to have unfettered access

  371. to God.

  372. And the law

  373. could not

  374. accomplish this.

  375. Now,

  376. that does not exclude

  377. the ability

  378. of the God-worshippers

  379. under the Old Covenant

  380. to draw near to God,

  381. but the author

  382. is driving us toward

  383. and speaking

  384. of a better hope.

  385. They had a

  386. fettered access

  387. to God.

  388. We now,

  389. in Christ,

  390. because he is

  391. the better hope,

  392. have an

  393. unfettered

  394. access.

  395. God dwelt

  396. in a tabernacle,

  397. in an inner place

  398. called the Holy of Holies,

  399. and then in a temple,

  400. in an inner place

  401. called the Holy of Holies.

  402. This is where his

  403. presence was.

  404. It wasn't amongst

  405. and in his people.

  406. It was in a

  407. place.

  408. And they could

  409. draw near

  410. by visiting

  411. the temple.

  412. They had to remain

  413. outside the Holy of Holies

  414. through much

  415. sacrifice,

  416. through much

  417. cleansing,

  418. all of these

  419. rites

  420. and rituals

  421. that were meant

  422. to point to

  423. a greater

  424. sacrifice,

  425. meant to point

  426. to a greater

  427. cleansing.

  428. And I wish,

  429. I wish that we

  430. could just get

  431. an injection

  432. of understanding,

  433. a feeling

  434. of the weightiness

  435. of that temple

  436. worship.

  437. We are so far

  438. removed from that.

  439. Our minds,

  440. when we see

  441. that there's a

  442. better hope

  443. in drawing near

  444. to God,

  445. go,

  446. okay.

  447. these people

  448. would have

  449. had much,

  450. they would have

  451. been consumed

  452. with this idea

  453. of being able

  454. to draw near

  455. to God.

  456. And this was

  457. tied in their

  458. minds,

  459. most often

  460. and regularly

  461. to the temple.

  462. We can see this

  463. all throughout

  464. the Psalms.

  465. C.S. Lewis

  466. in his work

  467. Reflections on the

  468. Psalms

  469. wrote this,

  470. these poets

  471. knew far less

  472. reason than we

  473. for loving God.

  474. Yet they express

  475. a longing for Him,

  476. for His mere

  477. presence,

  478. which comes only

  479. to the best

  480. Christians or to

  481. Christians in

  482. their best moments.

  483. They long

  484. to live all

  485. their days

  486. in the temple

  487. so that they

  488. may constantly

  489. see the fair

  490. beauty of the

  491. Lord.

  492. Psalm 27

  493. in verse 4.

  494. Their longing

  495. to go up to

  496. Jerusalem and

  497. appear before

  498. the presence of

  499. God is like

  500. a physical

  501. thirst.

  502. Psalm 42.

  503. From Jerusalem

  504. His presence

  505. flashes out

  506. in perfect

  507. beauty.

  508. Psalm 50

    Psalms 50:2

  509. verse 2.

  510. Lacking

  511. that encounter

  512. with Him,

  513. their souls

  514. are parched

  515. like a waterless

  516. countryside.

  517. Psalm 63

    Psalms 63:2

  518. verse 2.

  519. They crave

  520. to be satisfied

  521. with the pleasures

  522. of His house.

  523. Psalm 65

  524. and verse 4.

  525. Only there

  526. can they be

  527. at ease

  528. like a bird

  529. in a nest.

  530. Psalm 84

  531. and verse 3.

  532. One day

  533. of those

  534. pleasures

  535. is better

  536. than a lifetime

  537. spent

  538. elsewhere.

  539. Psalm 20.

  540. So,

  541. they seem

  542. to comprehend

  543. these inspired

  544. psalmists.

  545. The beauty

  546. of being

  547. in the presence

  548. of God

  549. and they

  550. tied it

  551. to this

  552. place.

  553. Beloved,

  554. we don't

  555. have a place.

  556. We are

  557. a people.

  558. Praise God

  559. that He

  560. now indwells

  561. us

  562. and gathers

  563. us together

  564. for times

  565. such as this.

  566. The law

  567. could not

  568. atone

  569. for sin,

  570. grant

  571. a clean

  572. conscience,

  573. or provide

  574. unfettered

  575. access

  576. to God.

  577. The author

  578. of Hebrews

  579. makes this

  580. point throughout

  581. the letter.

  582. The law

  583. could not

  584. atone

  585. for sin,

  586. could not

  587. pay the

  588. price

  589. that was

  590. due

  591. our sin.

  592. The law

  593. makes us

  594. painfully aware

  595. that the price

  596. needs to be

  597. paid.

  598. That none

  599. of us

  600. have perfectly

  601. kept

  602. the law

  603. of God.

  604. And it

  605. is a good

  606. law.

  607. It is a

  608. law that

  609. ought to

  610. be

  611. commended

  612. and

  613. obeyed.

  614. None

  615. of us

  616. have

  617. kept

  618. it.

  619. Most

  620. of us

  621. have been

  622. guilty

  623. at every

  624. point

  625. of it.

  626. And there's

  627. a great

  628. unfathomable

  629. debt

  630. that is

  631. due

  632. because we

  633. are rebels

  634. against the

  635. most holy

  636. God.

  637. The law

  638. serves us

  639. in this

  640. way.

  641. It says

  642. to us

  643. you need

  644. atonement.

  645. There needs

  646. to be

  647. a penalty

  648. paid

  649. for your

  650. rebellion.

  651. But the

  652. law

  653. itself

  654. could not

  655. atone

  656. for sin.

  657. This

  658. temple

  659. practice,

  660. this

  661. Aaronic

  662. priesthood

  663. was all

  664. about

  665. making

  666. atonement.

  667. And it

  668. was constant.

  669. It was

  670. always

  671. ongoing.

  672. Blood

  673. flowed

  674. constantly

  675. off the

  676. temple

  677. mount.

  678. Again

  679. and again

  680. and again.

  681. There were

  682. sacrifices

  683. of all

  684. kinds.

  685. And there

  686. were sacrifices

  687. made for

  688. the sins

  689. that you

  690. weren't even

  691. aware that

  692. you made.

  693. It was

  694. meant to

  695. be a

  696. system

  697. built

  698. to show

  699. that there

  700. was a

  701. greater

  702. sacrifice

  703. necessary.

  704. The author

  705. of Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:4

  706. chapter 10

  707. verse 4

  708. says,

  709. For it is

  710. impossible

  711. for the

  712. blood of

  713. bulls

  714. and goats

  715. to take

  716. away sins.

  717. And then

  718. in verse 11

  719. of chapter 10,

  720. And every

  721. priest stands

  722. daily at

  723. his service

  724. offering

  725. repeatedly

  726. the same

  727. sacrifices

  728. which can

  729. never

  730. take away

  731. sins.

  732. being a

  733. Levitical

  734. priest

  735. sounds

  736. exhausting.

  737. I feel like

  738. at the end

  739. of your

  740. shift you

  741. would just

  742. be like,

  743. What are

  744. we doing?

  745. We're going

  746. to have to

  747. pick it up

  748. and do it

  749. again tomorrow.

  750. You would

  751. have hoped

  752. of all

  753. people that

  754. the Levitical

  755. priests would

  756. have been

  757. in the

  758. scripture and

  759. been longing

  760. for that

  761. perfect

  762. sacrifice

  763. that would

  764. take away

  765. the sins

  766. Of the

  767. world.

  768. So the

  769. law could

  770. not atone

  771. for sin.

  772. The law

  773. also could

  774. not grant

  775. a clean

  776. conscience.

  777. We won't

  778. spend much

  779. time talking

  780. about and

  781. thinking about

  782. conscience.

  783. But we

  784. have experienced

  785. a guilty

  786. conscience.

  787. We have

  788. experienced

  789. doing something

  790. that was

  791. offensive to

  792. God and

  793. carrying the

  794. weight of

  795. that offense.

  796. The law

  797. heaps guilt

  798. on the

  799. conscience

  800. to drive us

  801. to Christ.

  802. It cannot

  803. clean.

  804. The

  805. conscience.

  806. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  807. chapter 9

  808. last half

  809. of verse

  810. 9 says

  811. gifts and

  812. sacrifices are

  813. offered that

  814. cannot perfect

  815. the conscience

  816. of the

  817. worshiper.

  818. Also the

  819. law could

  820. not provide

  821. unfettered

  822. access to

  823. God.

  824. And that's

  825. the point

  826. being made

  827. in verse

  828. 11.

  829. Now if

  830. perfection had

  831. been attainable

  832. through the

  833. Levitical

  834. priesthood for

  835. under it

  836. the people

  837. received the

  838. law.

  839. If it

  840. could have

  841. what further

  842. need would

  843. there have

  844. been for

  845. another priest

  846. to arise

  847. after the

  848. order of

  849. Melchizedek?

  850. The law

  851. also cannot

  852. give us

  853. unfettered

  854. access to

  855. God.

  856. However,

  857. praise the

  858. Lord that

  859. this text

  860. speaks

  861. secondly to

  862. the sufficiency

  863. of the

  864. Melchizedekian

  865. priesthood

  866. and the

  867. new covenant.

  868. The Aaronic

  869. and the

  870. old

  871. meant to

  872. point us

  873. to,

  874. to make

  875. us aware

  876. of our

  877. need of

  878. the other.

  879. Verse 15

  880. through the

  881. end of the

  882. text.

  883. This becomes

  884. even more

  885. evident when

  886. another priest

  887. arises in

  888. the likeness

  889. of Melchizedek

  890. who has

  891. become a

  892. priest not

  893. on the

  894. basis of

  895. a legal

  896. requirement

  897. concerning

  898. bodily

  899. descent,

  900. but by

  901. the power

  902. of an

  903. indestructible

  904. life.

  905. For it is

  906. witnessed of

  907. him,

  908. this is

  909. Psalm 110

    Psalms 110:4

  910. verse 4,

  911. you are a

  912. priest forever

  913. after the

  914. order of

  915. Melchizedek.

  916. For on the

  917. one hand,

  918. a former

  919. commandment

  920. is set

  921. aside because

  922. of its

  923. weakness

  924. and uselessness,

  925. for the

  926. law made

  927. nothing

  928. perfect.

  929. But on

  930. the other

  931. hand,

  932. a better

  933. hope is

  934. introduced

  935. through

  936. which we

  937. draw near

  938. to God.

  939. So remember

  940. last week,

  941. we talked

  942. a bit

  943. about

  944. this

  945. Melchizedek.

  946. He is a

  947. rather obscure

  948. character in

  949. the Bible.

  950. We read

  951. about him

  952. in Genesis

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  953. chapter 14.

  954. You can

  955. get much

  956. of that

  957. information

  958. right here

  959. in the

  960. beginning

  961. of Hebrews

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  962. chapter 7.

  963. Abraham

  964. goes out,

  965. fights a

  966. battle.

  967. On his

  968. return from

  969. that battle,

  970. he meets

  971. with this

  972. priest king

  973. Melchizedek

  974. and he

  975. offers to

  976. him a

  977. tithe

  978. of his

  979. spoils of

  980. war.

  981. And this

  982. priest king

  983. blesses

  984. Abraham.

  985. And then he

  986. disappears

  987. from the

  988. pages of

  989. scripture

  990. until in

  991. Psalm 110

  992. and verse

  993. 4.

  994. There's this

  995. inspired

  996. revelation

  997. of who

  998. Christ would

  999. be,

  1000. where he

  1001. says,

  1002. you are a

  1003. priest forever

  1004. after the

  1005. order of

  1006. Melchizedek.

  1007. And I

  1008. praise God

  1009. for our

  1010. inspired text,

  1011. for the

  1012. New Testament

  1013. that gives

  1014. us so much

  1015. explanation of

  1016. the Old

  1017. Testament,

  1018. that the

  1019. writer of

  1020. Hebrews

  1021. was shown

  1022. what all

  1023. of this

  1024. means for

  1025. us.

  1026. It's

  1027. incredible.

  1028. So remember

  1029. that Melchizedek

  1030. foreshadows

  1031. Christ's

  1032. offices,

  1033. the offices

  1034. of king

  1035. and of

  1036. priest.

  1037. Verse 2

  1038. chapter 7.

  1039. He is first

  1040. by translation

  1041. of his

  1042. name,

  1043. king of

  1044. Melchizedek,

  1045. king of

  1046. righteousness,

  1047. and then he

  1048. is also

  1049. king of

  1050. Salem.

  1051. That is

  1052. king of

  1053. peace.

  1054. He, being

  1055. Melchizedek,

  1056. foreshadowing

  1057. Christ, was

  1058. one who

  1059. could hold

  1060. both offices.

  1061. And the

  1062. Levitical priests

  1063. could not be

  1064. kings, and

  1065. kings most

  1066. certainly could

  1067. not be

  1068. Levitical

  1069. priests.

  1070. Much judgment

  1071. was brought

  1072. upon kings

  1073. who tried to

  1074. serve in

  1075. that role.

  1076. So they're

  1077. unique, and

  1078. they're appointed

  1079. uniquely.

  1080. Secondly,

  1081. Melchizedek

  1082. foreshadows

  1083. Christ's

  1084. qualifications.

  1085. He had

  1086. no genealogy,

  1087. that is no

  1088. genealogy by

  1089. which to

  1090. show himself

  1091. a Levitical

  1092. priest.

  1093. He was

  1094. from the

  1095. line of

  1096. Judah.

  1097. Verse 3,

  1098. he is

  1099. without father

  1100. or mother

  1101. or genealogy.

  1102. We have

  1103. no record

  1104. of this

  1105. in the

  1106. text about

  1107. Melchizedek,

  1108. and has

  1109. no beginning

  1110. or end.

  1111. Again,

  1112. interpreting

  1113. from silence,

  1114. we know

  1115. not anything

  1116. about

  1117. Melchizedek's

  1118. beginning

  1119. or end,

  1120. and this

  1121. is meant

  1122. to show

  1123. us

  1124. something

  1125. of

  1126. Christ.

  1127. Right?

  1128. But resembling

  1129. the Son

  1130. of God,

  1131. verse 3,

  1132. he continues

  1133. a priest

  1134. forever.

  1135. And in

  1136. our text

  1137. today,

  1138. this is

  1139. where the

  1140. author is

  1141. still going.

  1142. That's why

  1143. I'm reminding

  1144. you of

  1145. this.

  1146. Because in

  1147. verse 16

  1148. and 17,

  1149. he's making

  1150. that point

  1151. once again.

  1152. Right?

  1153. He didn't

  1154. become a

  1155. priest on

  1156. the basis

  1157. of a legal

  1158. requirement

  1159. from the

  1160. old covenant,

  1161. but by

  1162. the power

  1163. of an

  1164. indestructible

  1165. life.

  1166. Right?

  1167. Put to death

  1168. on the cross

  1169. but raised

  1170. again

  1171. three days

  1172. later.

  1173. He's a

  1174. priest

  1175. forever,

  1176. verse 17,

  1177. quoting Psalm

    Psalms 110:4

  1178. 110,

  1179. verse 4.

  1180. A priest

  1181. forever

  1182. after the

  1183. order

  1184. of Melchizedek.

  1185. So

  1186. significant.

  1187. Which is the

  1188. third thing

  1189. that Melchizedek

  1190. foreshadows

  1191. for us

  1192. about Christ.

  1193. Christ's

  1194. superiority

  1195. over

  1196. Abraham,

  1197. over

  1198. Melchizedek,

  1199. over

  1200. all.

  1201. We see

  1202. that the

  1203. inferior

  1204. tithes

  1205. to the

  1206. superior

  1207. and secondly

  1208. the superior

  1209. blesses

  1210. the inferior

  1211. verses 4

  1212. through 7.

  1213. All of

  1214. this is

  1215. driving us

  1216. to understand

  1217. the superiority

  1218. of Jesus

  1219. Christ.

  1220. So

  1221. Jesus

  1222. Christ,

  1223. our

  1224. forever

  1225. perfect

  1226. priest,

  1227. atones

  1228. for sin,

  1229. he grants

  1230. a clean

  1231. conscience,

  1232. and he

  1233. provides

  1234. unfettered

  1235. access

  1236. to God.

  1237. Why would

  1238. you go

  1239. back to

  1240. the old

  1241. is what

  1242. the author

  1243. of Hebrews

  1244. is saying.

  1245. Why would

  1246. you do

  1247. that?

  1248. It was

  1249. insufficient.

  1250. But

  1251. Christ

  1252. is sufficient.

  1253. Jesus

  1254. Christ

  1255. atones

  1256. for sin.

  1257. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:12

  1258. chapter

  1259. 10

  1260. verses

  1261. 12

  1262. 14

  1263. when

  1264. Christ

  1265. had

  1266. offered

  1267. for

  1268. all

  1269. time

  1270. a

  1271. single

  1272. sacrifice

  1273. for

  1274. sins.

  1275. He

  1276. sat

  1277. down

  1278. at

  1279. the

  1280. right

  1281. hand

  1282. of

  1283. God

  1284. waiting

  1285. from

  1286. that

  1287. time

  1288. until

  1289. his

  1290. enemy

  1291. should

  1292. be

  1293. made

  1294. a

  1295. footstool

  1296. for

  1297. his

  1298. feet.

  1299. For

  1300. by

  1301. a

  1302. single

  1303. offering

  1304. he

  1305. has

  1306. perfected

  1307. for

  1308. all

  1309. time

  1310. those

  1311. who

  1312. are

  1313. being

  1314. sanctified.

  1315. So

  1316. here

  1317. again

  1318. is

  1319. this

  1320. idea

  1321. of

  1322. perfection.

  1323. Having

  1324. the

  1325. ability

  1326. because

  1327. we

  1328. have

  1329. Christ's

  1330. righteousness

  1331. to

  1332. draw

  1333. near

  1334. to

  1335. God.

  1336. And

  1337. by

  1338. what?

  1339. What

  1340. atones

  1341. for

  1342. our

  1343. sin

  1344. in

  1345. order

  1346. to

  1347. bring

  1348. us

  1349. to

  1350. God?

  1351. The

  1352. sacrifice

  1353. of

  1354. Christ.

  1355. A

  1356. single

  1357. sacrifice.

  1358. Not

  1359. continued

  1360. sacrifice.

  1361. Not

  1362. all

  1363. day

  1364. never

  1365. ending

  1366. sacrifice.

  1367. But

  1368. a

  1369. single

  1370. sacrifice.

  1371. He

  1372. offered

  1373. himself

  1374. as

  1375. a

  1376. perfect

  1377. sacrifice

  1378. that

  1379. we

  1380. might

  1381. be

  1382. perfect

  1383. in

  1384. him.

  1385. And

  1386. the

  1387. last

  1388. half

  1389. of

  1390. verse

  1391. 12

  1392. is

  1393. so

  1394. significant

  1395. because

  1396. the

  1397. temple

  1398. had

  1399. nowhere

  1400. to

  1401. sit

  1402. down.

  1403. There

  1404. was

  1405. no

  1406. sitting

  1407. furniture

  1408. for

  1409. the

  1410. Levitical

  1411. priests.

  1412. Why?

  1413. Because

  1414. they

  1415. didn't

  1416. have

  1417. time

  1418. to

  1419. sit

  1420. down.

  1421. When

  1422. they

  1423. were

  1424. working

  1425. their

  1426. shift

  1427. they

  1428. were

  1429. busy

  1430. making

  1431. sacrifice

  1432. making

  1433. sacrifice

  1434. making

  1435. sacrifice

  1436. sins

  1437. piling

  1438. up

  1439. sacrifices

  1440. being

  1441. made.

  1442. It

  1443. was

  1444. never

  1445. enough

  1446. because

  1447. it

  1448. wasn't

  1449. meant

  1450. to

  1451. be.

  1452. It

  1453. was

  1454. meant

  1455. to

  1456. point

  1457. us

  1458. to

  1459. the

  1460. perfect

  1461. sacrifice

  1462. of

  1463. Christ.

  1464. So

  1465. the

  1466. last

  1467. half

  1468. of

  1469. verse

  1470. 12

  1471. says

  1472. he

  1473. sat

  1474. down.

  1475. We

  1476. know

  1477. he

  1478. declared

  1479. it

  1480. is

  1481. finished

  1482. and

  1483. he

  1484. sat

  1485. down

  1486. at

  1487. the

  1488. right

  1489. hand

  1490. the

  1491. place

  1492. of

  1493. honor

  1494. of

  1495. God

  1496. the

  1497. Father.

  1498. One

  1499. sacrifice

  1500. for

  1501. all.

  1502. First

  1503. Peter

  1504. chapter

  1505. two

  1506. verse

  1507. twenty

  1508. four

  1509. says

  1510. the

  1511. same

  1512. he

  1513. himself

  1514. bore

  1515. our

  1516. sins

  1517. in

  1518. his

  1519. body

  1520. on

  1521. the

  1522. tree.

  1523. He

  1524. took

  1525. the

  1526. punishment

  1527. that

  1528. was

  1529. due

  1530. us.

  1531. He

  1532. took

  1533. it

  1534. on

  1535. himself.

  1536. God

  1537. couldn't

  1538. overlook

  1539. the

  1540. sin.

  1541. He

  1542. had

  1543. to

  1544. punish

  1545. the

  1546. sin.

  1547. He

  1548. punished

  1549. it

  1550. in

  1551. Christ

  1552. that

  1553. we

  1554. might

  1555. die

  1556. to

  1557. sin

  1558. and

  1559. live

  1560. to

  1561. righteousness

  1562. by

  1563. his

  1564. wounds

  1565. you

  1566. have

  1567. been

  1568. healed.

  1569. Jesus

  1570. Christ

  1571. and

  1572. Jesus

  1573. Christ

  1574. alone

  1575. atones

  1576. for

  1577. sin.

  1578. The

  1579. law

  1580. cannot

  1581. accomplish

  1582. this.

  1583. It

  1584. points

  1585. us

  1586. to

  1587. his

  1588. accomplishment.

  1589. Second

  1590. Jesus

  1591. Christ

  1592. grants

  1593. a

  1594. clean

  1595. conscience.

  1596. Having

  1597. had

  1598. our

  1599. sin

  1600. atoned

  1601. for

  1602. we

  1603. no

  1604. longer

  1605. have

  1606. to

  1607. bear

  1608. the

  1609. guilt

  1610. of

  1611. our

  1612. sin.

  1613. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:14

  1614. 9

  1615. verse

  1616. 14

  1617. how

  1618. much

  1619. more

  1620. would

  1621. the

  1622. blood

  1623. of

  1624. Christ

  1625. who

  1626. through

  1627. the

  1628. eternal

  1629. spirit

  1630. offered

  1631. himself

  1632. without

  1633. blemish

  1634. to

  1635. God

  1636. purify

  1637. our

  1638. conscience

  1639. !

  1640. from

  1641. dead

  1642. works

  1643. to

  1644. serve

  1645. the

  1646. living

  1647. God.

  1648. What a

  1649. glorious

  1650. thing

  1651. it is

  1652. that if

  1653. we are

  1654. in

  1655. Christ

  1656. the sins

  1657. that we

  1658. continue

  1659. to

  1660. commit

  1661. our

  1662. flesh

  1663. wields

  1664. its

  1665. ugly

  1666. head.

  1667. we

  1668. forget

  1669. who

  1670. we

  1671. are

  1672. in

  1673. Jesus

  1674. and

  1675. we

  1676. still

  1677. sin

  1678. that

  1679. that

  1680. sin

  1681. was

  1682. also

  1683. covered

  1684. by

  1685. the

  1686. blood

  1687. of

  1688. Christ.

  1689. Brother,

  1690. we don't

  1691. need to

  1692. do

  1693. penance.

  1694. We

  1695. merely

  1696. need

  1697. to

  1698. do

  1699. repentance.

  1700. And

  1701. repentance

  1702. when we

  1703. sin

  1704. is a

  1705. merely

  1706. going

  1707. that

  1708. was

  1709. sin.

  1710. Praise

  1711. God

  1712. for

  1713. the

  1714. cross

  1715. of

  1716. Christ.

  1717. Many

  1718. of us

  1719. who

  1720. take

  1721. sin

  1722. seriously

  1723. want

  1724. to

  1725. spend

  1726. a

  1727. period

  1728. of

  1729. time

  1730. mourning

  1731. our

  1732. sinfulness.

  1733. We

  1734. want

  1735. to

  1736. spend

  1737. much

  1738. time

  1739. beating

  1740. ourselves

  1741. up

  1742. over

  1743. what

  1744. we

  1745. have

  1746. done.

  1747. And

  1748. I've

  1749. been

  1750. asked

  1751. the

  1752. question,

  1753. how

  1754. long

  1755. should

  1756. I

  1757. mourn

  1758. !

  1759. my

  1760. sin?

  1761. My

  1762. answer

  1763. is only

  1764. as long

  1765. as it

  1766. takes

  1767. to get

  1768. you

  1769. back

  1770. to

  1771. the

  1772. cross

  1773. of

  1774. Christ.

  1775. Flee

  1776. to it

  1777. and flee

  1778. as fast

  1779. as you

  1780. can.

  1781. Mourn

  1782. the sin

  1783. on your

  1784. way

  1785. there,

  1786. but

  1787. when

  1788. you're

  1789. there,

  1790. recognize

  1791. that this

  1792. too

  1793. was covered

  1794. by the

  1795. blood of

  1796. Christ.

  1797. Have your

  1798. conscience

  1799. made clean.

  1800. Don't

  1801. bear the

  1802. guilt that's

  1803. not years

  1804. to bear

  1805. that Christ

  1806. died

  1807. for you.

  1808. Jesus Christ

  1809. grants

  1810. a clean

  1811. conscience.

  1812. The law

  1813. could not

  1814. do this.

  1815. I

  1816. imagine

  1817. going through

  1818. the ritual

  1819. practice of it,

  1820. living

  1821. living in

  1822. that day

  1823. and the

  1824. outskirts

  1825. of Jerusalem

  1826. and making

  1827. the trek

  1828. up the

  1829. mountain

  1830. and buying

  1831. the sacrifice

  1832. and taking

  1833. the sacrifice

  1834. to the

  1835. Levitical

  1836. priest

  1837. and him

  1838. going

  1839. through the

  1840. practice

  1841. of making

  1842. the sacrifice

  1843. and turning

  1844. around and

  1845. feeling the

  1846. exact same

  1847. way.

  1848. Feeling

  1849. nothing.

  1850. These people

  1851. would have

  1852. had a faith

  1853. that went

  1854. beyond the

  1855. sacrifice

  1856. itself.

  1857. Somehow

  1858. God is

  1859. pleased

  1860. as I'm

  1861. doing this.

  1862. Looking

  1863. to

  1864. the

  1865. ultimate

  1866. sacrifice.

  1867. Looking

  1868. to

  1869. the

  1870. hope

  1871. of a

  1872. clean

  1873. conscience.

  1874. Third,

  1875. Jesus Christ

  1876. provides

  1877. unfettered

  1878. access

  1879. to God.

  1880. There's

  1881. nothing

  1882. that

  1883. restrains

  1884. this

  1885. access.

  1886. You have

  1887. to remember

  1888. it is so

  1889. massively

  1890. significant

  1891. that when

  1892. Jesus died

  1893. the temple

  1894. curtain

  1895. which was

  1896. the curtain

  1897. that divided

  1898. the holy

  1899. place

  1900. from the

  1901. holy

  1902. of holies

  1903. was

  1904. dividing

  1905. where people

  1906. could go

  1907. to where

  1908. only one

  1909. person

  1910. could go

  1911. one day

  1912. a year

  1913. the presence

  1914. of God

  1915. and he

  1916. wasn't there

  1917. in Jesus'

  1918. day by the

  1919. way.

  1920. He had

  1921. left long

  1922. ago.

  1923. It was

  1924. just an

  1925. empty

  1926. space.

  1927. But there

  1928. was a

  1929. curtain

  1930. still there

  1931. and it

  1932. signified

  1933. something.

  1934. You're

  1935. unclean.

  1936. You can't

  1937. come in

  1938. here.

  1939. This

  1940. curtain

  1941. was as

  1942. thick as

  1943. a man's

  1944. hand.

  1945. My hand's

  1946. not very

  1947. thick.

  1948. It was

  1949. thick.

  1950. And it

  1951. was torn

  1952. from the

  1953. top

  1954. to the

  1955. bottom.

  1956. Christ

  1957. gives us

  1958. access

  1959. to the

  1960. place of

  1961. God.

  1962. God is

  1963. saying you

  1964. will no

  1965. longer

  1966. worship me

  1967. in this

  1968. way.

  1969. There's a

  1970. better hope

  1971. for you

  1972. to draw

  1973. near to

  1974. me.

  1975. Verse 19

  1976. for the

  1977. law made

  1978. nothing

  1979. perfect.

  1980. But on

  1981. the other

  1982. hand a

  1983. better hope

  1984. is

  1985. introduced

  1986. through

  1987. which

  1988. this is

  1989. Christ

  1990. that he's

  1991. talking

  1992. about.

  1993. We

  1994. draw

  1995. near

  1996. to

  1997. God.

  1998. Verse 25

  1999. consequently

  2000. he is

  2001. able to

  2002. save to

  2003. the utter

  2004. most

  2005. those

  2006. who

  2007. draw

  2008. near

  2009. to

  2010. God

  2011. through

  2012. him

  2013. since

  2014. he

  2015. always

  2016. lives.

  2017. Remember

  2018. this is

  2019. where we're

  2020. headed.

  2021. He

  2022. always

  2023. lives

  2024. to make

  2025. intercession

  2026. for them.

  2027. Beloved

  2028. if you're

  2029. in Christ

  2030. there's a

  2031. reality

  2032. that Jesus

  2033. right now

  2034. is speaking

  2035. to the

  2036. father on

  2037. your behalf.

  2038. God

  2039. in his

  2040. holiness

  2041. his

  2042. perfect

  2043. justice

  2044. has a

  2045. white

  2046. hot

  2047. wrath

  2048. that burns

  2049. against those

  2050. who are

  2051. rebels

  2052. against him.

  2053. And Jesus

  2054. sits at his

  2055. right hand

  2056. and says

  2057. but not

  2058. that one

  2059. he's

  2060. mine

  2061. not her

  2062. she's

  2063. mine.

  2064. Yes

  2065. they're

  2066. wretched.

  2067. Yes

  2068. they've

  2069. been

  2070. rebels

  2071. right

  2072. but they

  2073. believed

  2074. in me

  2075. right

  2076. I took

  2077. their

  2078. punishment

  2079. on the

  2080. cross

  2081. I've

  2082. given

  2083. them

  2084. my

  2085. righteousness

  2086. right

  2087. they are

  2088. in me

  2089. and I

  2090. am

  2091. in

  2092. them

  2093. they

  2094. belong

  2095. to

  2096. us

  2097. forever

  2098. God's

  2099. wrath

  2100. passes

  2101. on

  2102. it's

  2103. the

  2104. beautiful

  2105. picture

  2106. of the

  2107. Passover

  2108. as the

  2109. people

  2110. huddled

  2111. in their

  2112. houses

  2113. and the

  2114. angel of

  2115. death

  2116. passed

  2117. over

  2118. Egypt

  2119. because of

  2120. the sacrifice

  2121. of that

  2122. perfect

  2123. lamb

  2124. put on

  2125. the

  2126. doorpost

  2127. the

  2128. angel of

  2129. death

  2130. would

  2131. pass

  2132. over

  2133. their

  2134. houses

  2135. right

  2136. God's

  2137. judgment

  2138. moving
