  1. I invite you to take your copy of God's Word. Turn to Hebrews chapter 7.

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  2. Our text for today will be Hebrews chapter 7 verses 20 through 28.

    Hebrews 7:20–28

  3. ! Before I read it, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

  4. It was written for His glory and our good.

  5. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  6. And it was not without an oath.

  7. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath.

  8. But this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to Him,

  9. The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind. You are a priest forever.

  10. This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

  11. The former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

  12. But He holds His priesthood permanently because He continues forever.

  13. Consequently, He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him,

  14. since He always lives to make intercession for them.

  15. For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest,

  16. holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

  17. He has no need like those high priests to offer sacrifices daily,

  18. first for His own sins and then for those of the people,

  19. since He did this once for all when He offered up Himself.

  20. For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests.

  21. But the word of the oath, which came later than the law,

  22. appoints a son who has been made perfect forever.

  23. So we have been working through the book of Hebrews for quite some time now,

  24. and have been for the last couple of weeks working through this idea of

  25. Jesus being a priest after the order of Melchizedek.

  26. I hope that you haven't grown tired of the name,

  27. that you've begun to wrap your mind around the significance of this reality.

  28. And if you wonder what I'm doing,

  29. I'm trying to download my sermon notes onto my iPad right now,

  30. which I typically do in advance and I forgot this morning.

  31. So we're almost there.

  32. There we go.

  33. I've got notes.

  34. So, this letter was likely written to a small church made up of Greek-speaking Jews

  35. meeting on the outskirts of Rome, and its author is unknown.

  36. But what we can be certain of concerning the author

  37. is that he has great pastoral affection for these people.

  38. This little church had suffered, and it would suffer.

  39. Some of them were mocked and beaten for following Jesus.

  40. We read of this in chapter 10 and verse 33.

  41. Some of them were imprisoned for following Jesus.

  42. Chapter 10 and verse 34.

  43. Also in verse 34 of chapter 10,

  44. some of them had had their property stolen for following Jesus.

  45. None of them had yet died.

  46. They hadn't shed blood yet.

  47. But it seems the author of this letter believes that they will.

  48. Chapter 12 and verse 4.

  49. And because of the trial they were experiencing,

  50. some of them had apostatized or abandoned their faith in Christ.

  51. We see this in chapter 6, verses 4 through 6.

  52. So this letter is a pastoral encouragement to persevere to the end.

  53. Hebrews chapter 6, verses 11 and 12 says,

    Hebrews 6:11

  54. The author of this letter is taking great pains

  55. to show his hearers the excellency,

  56. the superiority of Jesus Christ.

  57. He's working through their minds to their hearts to say,

  58. Don't give up on this way,

  59. because it is a more excellent way.

  60. Recall that at the beginning of the letter,

  61. he skips any form of salutation

  62. and begins the letter in this way.

  63. Chapter 1, the first three verses.

  64. Long ago, at many times and in many ways,

  65. God spoke to our fathers by the prophets.

  66. But in these last days,

  67. he has spoken to us by his Son,

  68. whom he appointed the heir of all things,

  69. through whom also he created the world.

  70. He is the radiance of the glory of God

  71. and the exact imprint of his nature.

  72. And he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

  73. After making purification for sins,

  74. he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.

  75. And then he quickly sets about the work

  76. of showing Christ's superiority,

  77. beginning with his superiority to angels.

  78. Verse 4, he writes,

  79. Having become as much superior to angels

  80. as the name he has inherited

  81. is more excellent than theirs.

  82. And he continues this theme

  83. in showing that Jesus is superior to Moses

  84. in chapter 3,

  85. that Jesus is superior to the high priest

  86. at the end of chapter 4 and into chapter 5,

  87. and that Jesus is superior to the whole Levitical system,

  88. which is where we find ourselves

  89. in the text this morning.

  90. As the author continues to make the point

  91. that Jesus' priesthood

  92. was not at all like the Aaronic

  93. or Levitical priesthood,

  94. because he was not a priest of their order,

  95. but that his priesthood is superior to theirs

  96. because it is of the order of Melchizedek.

  97. And beloved, we have to have this foundation

  98. if we have any hope in this life

  99. or in the life to come at all.

  100. We must understand Jesus

  101. as a Melchizedekian priest.

  102. And you don't have to walk around using that name,

  103. but you have to understand that he's a priest

  104. that was appointed by God with the promise,

  105. that he's a priest who is permanent,

  106. and he was the perfect priest

  107. because he was the perfect sacrifice.

  108. We must understand this

  109. to have a foundation on which

  110. to build anything of value before God.

  111. Every person in the world,

  112. whether they are willing to admit it or not,

  113. builds upon some foundation.

  114. Often it's a foundation of our own making.

  115. In the case of the Hebrews,

  116. it was a foundation of Judaism,

  117. and they were very tempted

  118. to go back to that foundation

  119. rather than this new foundation

  120. of Christ as this forever priest.

  121. So we're going to have foundations.

  122. If you've ever heard the term,

  123. it's turtles all the way down.

  124. It comes from a story of a teacher

  125. posing the question to a small class,

  126. young people,

  127. what holds the world up?

  128. She thought she'd get no answer to this question,

  129. and she herself didn't have one.

  130. But a little boy shot up his hand,

  131. and he said,

  132. the world sits on the back of a turtle.

  133. And she said,

  134. well, very cleverly,

  135. what holds that turtle up?

  136. And he said,

  137. another turtle.

  138. And she said,

  139. well, and what holds that turtle up?

  140. And he goes,

  141. teacher,

  142. it's turtles all the way down.

  143. So when you hear me say that phrase,

  144. it's turtles all the way down,

  145. what I'm suggesting to you

  146. is we have to build upon something.

  147. We have to make some assumptions at some point,

  148. but praise God,

  149. because of the holy writ,

  150. because of this inspired word,

  151. there's an actual foundation,

  152. a real foundation on which we can build.

  153. I had a very difficult week,

  154. and until the second,

  155. I wasn't planning on sharing this with you,

  156. but I think it's good and appropriate at this time.

  157. I don't know exactly.

  158. The diagnostics are still running

  159. about why this week was so hard for me.

  160. I haven't had a vacation since last January.

  161. I think there's a tiredness

  162. that's just soaked into my bones.

  163. I think it's physical.

  164. More than that,

  165. I think it's emotional and spiritual.

  166. I'm just tired.

  167. There are good reasons for this,

  168. and there are, I'm sure,

  169. poor reasons for this.

  170. I rolled into yesterday,

  171. anxious,

  172. that's the word to put on it.

  173. I'm just feeling an anxiety

  174. about what in particular I couldn't say.

  175. I think what probably was causing me the most anxiety

  176. is that I didn't feel ready to face today.

  177. Here we are,

  178. we're talking about this Melchizedekian priest again.

  179. How do I say this in a meaningful way

  180. that's new and fresh and helpful?

  181. I don't know.

  182. I've got an outline.

  183. I think it's a pretty good outline for the text.

  184. I think it makes sense,

  185. but how is it going to be helpful?

  186. How is it even helpful to me?

  187. These are the kinds of things

  188. that are going through my head,

  189. and I'm fearing

  190. the need to fake my way

  191. through having anything useful

  192. to do and say today.

  193. And this caused me

  194. what I can only describe,

  195. I don't know if this is what it was or not,

  196. but to have an anxiety attack.

  197. Again, if you've had an anxiety attack,

  198. what I felt may have been nothing like what you felt,

  199. but I had heart palpitations,

  200. my heart was beating extremely fast in my chest,

  201. inexplicably,

  202. and I just felt this overwhelming pressure.

  203. And generally, for this morning,

  204. I don't know.

  205. And it took me

  206. most of yesterday

  207. and into this morning,

  208. my wife very kindly gave me some space

  209. yesterday evening

  210. to work through

  211. Philippians chapter 4,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  212. running my mind through

  213. beginning verse 4

  214. all the way through

  215. verse 8.

  216. What is the remedy

  217. for this type of feeling

  218. that I'm having?

  219. And so if you will,

  220. turn with me to

  221. Philippians 4.

  222. I want to read it to you.

  223. I just,

  224. in a very unplanned way,

  225. but hopefully this will help us

  226. to consider today's text.

  227. This is what Paul writes,

  228. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  229. Again, I will say,

  230. Rejoice.

  231. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  232. The Lord is at hand.

  233. Right?

  234. So he's saying,

  235. like,

  236. why would you not rejoice?

  237. Be reasonable.

  238. Because God is near.

  239. God knows.

  240. God is with you.

  241. Do not be anxious about anything.

  242. But in everything,

  243. by prayer and supplication,

  244. with thanksgiving,

  245. let your requests be made known

  246. to God.

  247. And here comes the cycling of that.

  248. I'm going,

  249. I'm not even sure what to pray.

  250. I don't even know exactly

  251. what's going on with me right now.

  252. How do I pray

  253. that God would help me

  254. in this feeling

  255. that I'm having?

  256. It's anxiety.

  257. I know.

  258. What am I even anxious about?

  259. And in the promise of verse 7,

  260. if we can make these requests known to God,

  261. is that the peace of God,

  262. which surpasses all understanding,

  263. will guard our hearts

  264. and our minds

  265. in Christ Jesus.

  266. Jesus.

  267. And I suddenly went,

  268. that Melchizedekian priest

  269. who does what for us?

  270. He always intercedes.

  271. So Jesus takes

  272. my messy prayers yesterday

  273. and he brings them

  274. before the Father.

  275. He cleans them up,

  276. makes them

  277. understandable,

  278. and he pleads on my behalf

  279. before God.

  280. Right?

  281. It's in him

  282. we have this greater hope

  283. by which we draw near

  284. to God.

  285. Verse 19

  286. of Hebrews chapter 6.

    Hebrews 6 chapter mention

  287. So,

  288. if we don't have that foundation,

  289. beloved,

  290. we have no hope.

  291. We have no hope in this life.

  292. And we have no hope

  293. in the life to come.

  294. We need this

  295. superior Christ.

  296. And it's a reality.

  297. It's not just some philosophy.

  298. It's not an idea.

  299. It's a reality.

  300. There is this Jesus.

  301. And he is in fact

  302. superior.

  303. And on this

  304. we can build a life

  305. that's filled with hope

  306. and peace

  307. and is pleasing

  308. to God.

  309. So,

  310. the outline for our study

  311. of this morning's text

  312. is as follows.

  313. Number one,

  314. Jesus is superior

  315. because of a promise.

  316. Jesus is superior

  317. because of a promise.

  318. Number two,

  319. Jesus is superior

  320. because of his permanence.

  321. And number three,

  322. Jesus is superior

  323. because of his person.

  324. So,

  325. he's superior

  326. because of a promise,

  327. because of his permanence,

  328. and because of his person.

  329. First,

  330. Jesus is superior

  331. because of a promise.

  332. So,

  333. just before our text today,

  334. right,

  335. we can read up

  336. a little bit,

  337. right,

  338. that there has been

  339. a priest

  340. given to us,

  341. a better hope

  342. through which

  343. we draw near

  344. to God.

  345. It's through this,

  346. because the Deccan priest,

  347. Jesus Christ,

  348. that was a better hope,

  349. better than

  350. the Aaronic priesthood,

  351. that we can

  352. draw near

  353. to Christ.

  354. And then the author says,

  355. and it was not

  356. without

  357. an oath,

  358. a promise.

  359. For those who

  360. formerly became priests

  361. were made such

  362. without

  363. an oath.

  364. But this one,

  365. Jesus Christ,

  366. was made a priest

  367. with an oath

  368. by the one

  369. who said to him,

  370. the Lord has sworn

  371. and will not

  372. change his mind.

  373. You are a priest

  374. forever.

  375. This makes Jesus

  376. the guarantor

  377. of a better

  378. covenant.

  379. The point of

  380. Jesus' superiority

  381. is first made

  382. by drawing

  383. our attention

  384. to the fact

  385. that Jesus

  386. became

  387. a Melchizedekian

  388. priest

  389. through a divine

  390. oath

  391. that was recorded

  392. in Psalm 110

    Psalms 110:4

  393. verse 4.

  394. The author of Hebrews,

  395. right,

  396. through inspiration

  397. and quite brilliantly

  398. sees Psalm 110

  399. and verse 4

  400. as pointing

  401. to

  402. Christ.

  403. A promise

  404. that was made

  405. that Jesus

  406. would be

  407. a forever

  408. priest.

  409. The Aaronic priests

  410. were not appointed

  411. with a promise.

  412. They took their positions

  413. because of their lineage

  414. through divine

  415. instruction

  416. but not

  417. through an oath.

  418. The only other time

  419. we know

  420. of God swearing

  421. an oath

  422. is when he ratified

  423. the covenant

  424. that he made

  425. with Abraham.

  426. We noted this

  427. and talked about it

  428. at length

  429. when we studied

  430. chapter 6

  431. verses 13

  432. through 18.

  433. And God is not

  434. obligated

  435. to make oaths.

  436. He's God.

  437. Humans may need

  438. to make oaths

  439. to say,

  440. no really,

  441. right,

  442. we're flawed.

  443. Even in our best efforts

  444. we often lie.

  445. So we would say

  446. to somebody,

  447. I mean this.

  448. I'm making this

  449. commitment,

  450. right,

  451. we make marriage

  452. vows.

  453. These are oaths

  454. made to one another

  455. because we're weak.

  456. God is not.

  457. He is in no way

  458. obligated

  459. to make oaths

  460. but because of our

  461. weakness

  462. he does so.

  463. His word is sure

  464. so

  465. when God serves

  466. our feeble minds

  467. by making oaths

  468. we should pay

  469. very careful

  470. attention

  471. to what it is

  472. he's promised

  473. to do.

  474. The author of Hebrews

  475. tells us

  476. why God does this

  477. in Hebrews chapter 6

    Hebrews 6:17

  478. verse 17.

  479. So when God desired

  480. to show

  481. more convincingly,

  482. right,

  483. this isn't because

  484. his word fails

  485. but because we fail

  486. to believe his word

  487. more convincingly

  488. to the heirs of the promise

  489. the unchangeable character

  490. of his purpose

  491. he guaranteed it

  492. with an oath.

  493. He makes this

  494. promise.

  495. He swears by himself

  496. he makes it sure

  497. that Jesus

  498. will be

  499. a forever

  500. priest.

  501. And the author

  502. is tying this together

  503. for us

  504. in verse 22

  505. where he says

  506. this makes Jesus

  507. the guarantor

  508. of a better

  509. covenant.

  510. Because he's

  511. the forever priest

  512. and he was

  513. made so

  514. by a divine

  515. oath

  516. this divine promise

  517. he's

  518. the guarantor

  519. the guarantee

  520. of a better

  521. covenant.

  522. There's two

  523. very important things

  524. to note

  525. about verse

  526. 22.

  527. First

  528. in Greek

  529. the sentence

  530. ends

  531. with the word

  532. the name

  533. Jesus.

  534. It's at the very end

  535. of the sentence.

  536. Here in English

  537. the translation

  538. that we're using

  539. most of us

  540. this morning

  541. ESV

  542. says this makes

  543. Jesus

  544. the guarantor

  545. of a better

  546. covenant.

  547. But in the Greek

  548. it would have been

  549. directly

  550. this makes

  551. the guarantor

  552. of a better

  553. covenant

  554. Jesus.

  555. And in Greek

  556. emphasis

  557. was placed

  558. towards the end

  559. of the sentence.

  560. Greek sentences

  561. drive to the point.

  562. They drive to the end.

  563. They drive to the weight

  564. of that

  565. sentence.

  566. And so in the original

  567. language

  568. this is one of the

  569. beautiful things

  570. about knowing

  571. it's not the case

  572. for me

  573. but at least

  574. knowing how to

  575. look up

  576. these types

  577. of things

  578. that the author

  579. of Hebrews

  580. is placing

  581. the full weight

  582. of verses

  583. 20 through 22

  584. on

  585. Christ

  586. on

  587. Jesus.

  588. Right?

  589. This makes

  590. the guarantor

  591. of a better

  592. covenant

  593. Jesus.

  594. Secondly

  595. about verse 22

  596. the author

  597. using the name

  598. Jesus

  599. instead of in

  600. other forms

  601. which he does

  602. throughout the letter

  603. Jesus Christ

  604. the Christ

  605. is emphasizing

  606. his humanity

  607. and his work.

  608. Jesus

  609. right?

  610. This

  611. God

  612. man

  613. emphasizing

  614. his

  615. incarnation

  616. that he came

  617. and lived

  618. as a man

  619. that he had

  620. an earthly

  621. ministry.

  622. And the author

  623. of Hebrews

  624. let me remind you

  625. has made this

  626. point.

  627. We lose this

  628. sometimes in our

  629. verse by verse

  630. study which is a

  631. good and valuable

  632. thing to do

  633. but he means

  634. for ideas to be

  635. carrying as

  636. this is a letter

  637. opened and read

  638. at one time.

  639. So Hebrews

    Hebrews 4:15

  640. chapter 4

  641. verse 15

  642. he says

  643. for we do not

  644. have a high priest

  645. who is unable

  646. to sympathize

  647. with our weaknesses

  648. but one who in

  649. every respect

  650. has been tempted

  651. as we are

  652. yet

  653. without sin.

  654. So beloved

  655. as you build

  656. a foundation

  657. on Christ

  658. we can have

  659. this confidence

  660. that this

  661. guarantor

  662. of a better

  663. covenant

  664. lived also

  665. as a man

  666. took on

  667. bodily form

  668. experienced

  669. the things

  670. that we

  671. experience

  672. experience

  673. them to the

  674. full

  675. because he

  676. never

  677. sinned

  678. all of the

  679. temptation

  680. that came

  681. everything

  682. that was

  683. driving at

  684. me across

  685. this past

  686. week

  687. that I would

  688. suggest

  689. caused me

  690. to sin

  691. he didn't

  692. give in

  693. to

  694. and he

  695. doesn't

  696. just

  697. empathize

  698. with me

  699. in my

  700. weakness

  701. he sympathizes

  702. with me

  703. he's walked

  704. in my

  705. shoes

  706. what a

  707. foundation

  708. to build

  709. upon

  710. what

  711. a forever

  712. priest

  713. speaks

  714. also

  715. of

  716. this

  717. name

  718. Jesus

  719. to his

  720. propitiation

  721. that he

  722. stood

  723. in our

  724. place

  725. that he

  726. took

  727. the

  728. punishment

  729. of God

  730. that was

  731. due us

  732. in

  733. himself

  734. again

  735. in the

  736. book of

  737. chapter 5

  738. verses 7

  739. through 10

  740. in the

  741. days of

  742. his flesh

  743. Jesus

  744. offered up

  745. prayers

  746. and supplications

  747. with loud

  748. cries

  749. and tears

  750. to him

  751. who was

  752. able to

  753. save him

  754. from death

  755. and he

  756. was heard

  757. because of

  758. his reverence

  759. although he

  760. was a son

  761. he learned

  762. obedience

  763. through what

  764. he suffered

  765. and being

  766. made perfect

  767. he became

  768. the source

  769. of eternal

  770. salvation

  771. to all

  772. who obey

  773. him

  774. being designated

  775. by God

  776. a high

  777. priest

  778. and this

  779. is where

  780. it's

  781. originally

  782. introduced

  783. to us

  784. after the

  785. order

  786. of

  787. Melchizedek

  788. Jesus

  789. died

  790. in our

  791. stead

  792. lived

  793. a perfect

  794. life

  795. that we

  796. might

  797. have

  798. his

  799. perfection

  800. so it

  801. speaks of

  802. his

  803. incarnation

  804. it speaks

  805. of his

  806. propitiation

  807. and it

  808. speaks

  809. now

  810. and where

  811. we are

  812. in our

  813. text

  814. today

  815. of his

  816. intercession

  817. Jesus

  818. God

  819. man

  820. put to

  821. death

  822. for our

  823. sin

  824. was raised

  825. again

  826. ascended

  827. and seated

  828. at the

  829. right hand

  830. of the

  831. father

  832. and in

  833. his

  834. session

  835. his

  836. current

  837. rule

  838. he

  839. intercedes

  840. or prays

  841. on our

  842. behalf

  843. Hebrews

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  844. chapter 7

  845. and verse

  846. 25

  847. where we're

  848. headed

  849. consequently

  850. he is able

  851. to save

  852. to the uttermost

  853. those who

  854. draw near

  855. to God

  856. through

  857. him

  858. since he

  859. always

  860. lives

  861. to make

  862. intercession

  863. for them

  864. and this

  865. is all

  866. true

  867. because

  868. of this

  869. promise

  870. Jesus

  871. is superior

  872. because

  873. of the

  874. promise

  875. secondly

  876. Jesus

  877. is superior

  878. because

  879. of his

  880. permanence

  881. we can see

  882. this in

  883. verses 23

  884. through

  885. 25

  886. which I

  887. just read

  888. the former

  889. priests were

  890. many in

  891. number

  892. because they

  893. were prevented

  894. by death

  895. from

  896. continuing

  897. in office

  898. but he

  899. holds

  900. his priesthood

  901. permanently

  902. because he

  903. continues

  904. forever

  905. and then

  906. verse 25

  907. consequently

  908. he is able

  909. to save

  910. to the uttermost

  911. those who

  912. draw near

  913. to God

  914. through him

  915. since he

  916. always lives

  917. to make

  918. intercession

  919. for them

  920. Aaron

  921. then

  922. Eleazar

  923. then

  924. Phineas

  925. and so

  926. on

  927. and so

  928. on

  929. and so

  930. on

  931. there

  932. was a

  933. high

  934. priest

  935. who died

  936. and then

  937. another high

  938. priest took

  939. his place

  940. and he died

  941. and another high

  942. priest took

  943. his place

  944. and he died

  945. inevitably

  946. all of the

  947. biblical record

  948. of these men

  949. ends with

  950. and he

  951. died

  952. human men

  953. just as we

  954. lose our

  955. earthly bodies

  956. one day

  957. these men

  958. could no

  959. longer

  960. continue in

  961. the office

  962. of high

  963. priest

  964. it was

  965. insufficient

  966. it was

  967. inferior

  968. in that

  969. way

  970. the historian

  971. Josephus

  972. records

  973. that 83

  974. priests

  975. served

  976. from Aaron

  977. to the

  978. destruction

  979. of the

  980. second temple

  981. in AD

  982. 70

  983. 83

  984. right

  985. and then

  986. he died

  987. came another

  988. and then

  989. he died

  990. and then

  991. came another

  992. in some other

  993. historical

  994. records

  995. there are as

  996. many as

  997. 300 plus

  998. that served

  999. in this role

  1000. so there's

  1001. even some

  1002. contradiction

  1003. in there

  1004. but the

  1005. point being

  1006. and simply

  1007. the point

  1008. that the

  1009. author of

  1010. Hebrews

  1011. is making

  1012. here

  1013. is that

  1014. they couldn't

  1015. continue

  1016. forever

  1017. and they

  1018. didn't

  1019. in contrast

  1020. Jesus'

  1021. priesthood

  1022. is permanent

  1023. that is

  1024. it is

  1025. non-transferable

  1026. it is

  1027. his priesthood

  1028. and he

  1029. will be

  1030. the priest

  1031. forever

  1032. Jesus is a

  1033. priest

  1034. after the

  1035. order of

  1036. Melchizedek

  1037. perpetually

  1038. right

  1039. in perpetuity

  1040. if you like

  1041. to watch

  1042. Shark Tank

  1043. and the

  1044. benefits

  1045. of this

  1046. reality

  1047. are massive

  1048. they're

  1049. massive

  1050. firstly

  1051. by faith

  1052. in Jesus'

  1053. eternal

  1054. perpetual

  1055. priesthood

  1056. we are

  1057. saved

  1058. totally

  1059. the author

  1060. of Hebrews

  1061. says that

  1062. he is able

  1063. to save

  1064. to the

  1065. uttermost

  1066. priesthood

  1067. it's not

  1068. a word

  1069. that's

  1070. common

  1071. in our

  1072. vernacular

  1073. today

  1074. and I

  1075. commend

  1076. the use

  1077. of it

  1078. in this

  1079. case

  1080. because the

  1081. idea of

  1082. completeness

  1083. is bound up

  1084. in the original

  1085. Greek word

  1086. but that's not

  1087. it

  1088. the idea

  1089. of

  1090. eternality

  1091. is also

  1092. bound up

  1093. in this

  1094. Greek word

  1095. and so to

  1096. use either

  1097. one

  1098. some translations

  1099. say for

  1100. all time

  1101. but that

  1102. falls short

  1103. and so

  1104. what I'm

  1105. guessing

  1106. is that

  1107. the translators

  1108. used a word

  1109. that would

  1110. make us all

  1111. scratch our

  1112. heads a little

  1113. bit

  1114. and do a

  1115. little work

  1116. to understand

  1117. that the

  1118. original word

  1119. combines these

  1120. ideas of

  1121. completeness

  1122. with

  1123. eternality

  1124. that really

  1125. to translate

  1126. it well

  1127. we'd have to

  1128. insert a

  1129. phrase

  1130. for that

  1131. single word

  1132. which would

  1133. be something

  1134. like

  1135. able to

  1136. save

  1137. completely

  1138. for all

  1139. time

  1140. that he

  1141. does a

  1142. work

  1143. that he

  1144. saves

  1145. us

  1146. it's not

  1147. a working

  1148. of our

  1149. own

  1150. right

  1151. we do

  1152. good work

  1153. now

  1154. because

  1155. he's

  1156. saved

  1157. us

  1158. but our

  1159. good working

  1160. adds

  1161. nothing

  1162. to

  1163. our

  1164. salvation

  1165. it

  1166. glorifies

  1167. the one

  1168. who saved

  1169. us

  1170. so he

  1171. saves us

  1172. completely

  1173. and he

  1174. saves us

  1175. securely

  1176. for all

  1177. time

  1178. so we

  1179. can add

  1180. nothing

  1181. to it

  1182. Paul writes

  1183. of this

  1184. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:8

  1185. chapter 2

  1186. verse 8

  1187. and 9

  1188. for by grace

  1189. you have been

  1190. saved through

  1191. faith

  1192. and this is

  1193. not your own

  1194. doing

  1195. unless we be

  1196. unclear about

  1197. what grace

  1198. is

  1199. it's not

  1200. your own

  1201. doing

  1202. it's the

  1203. gift

  1204. of God

  1205. not a

  1206. result of

  1207. works

  1208. so that

  1209. no one

  1210. may boast

  1211. God

  1212. has

  1213. saved us

  1214. and this

  1215. has

  1216. present

  1217. implication

  1218. for us

  1219. in this

  1220. life

  1221. as we

  1222. are

  1223. even

  1224. now

  1225. saved

  1226. completely

  1227. yet

  1228. growing

  1229. up

  1230. in

  1231. holiness

  1232. this

  1233. thing

  1234. we

  1235. call

  1236. sanctification

  1237. Paul

  1238. writes

  1239. in 1

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  1240. Corinthians

  1241. chapter 1

  1242. and verse

  1243. 18

  1244. for the word

  1245. of the cross

  1246. is folly

  1247. to those

  1248. who are

  1249. perishing

  1250. but to

  1251. us who

  1252. are being

  1253. saved

  1254. it is

  1255. the power

  1256. of God

  1257. this

  1258. doesn't

  1259. mean

  1260. that we

  1261. are being

  1262. saved

  1263. in a

  1264. degree

  1265. we

  1266. are

  1267. saved

  1268. but we

  1269. are

  1270. continually

  1271. being

  1272. saved

  1273. we are

  1274. continually

  1275. being turned

  1276. from sin

  1277. and to

  1278. God

  1279. in

  1280. Christ

  1281. Christ

  1282. is able

  1283. to save

  1284. to the

  1285. uttermost

  1286. completely

  1287. for all

  1288. time

  1289. those who

  1290. place their

  1291. faith

  1292. in him

  1293. secondly

  1294. by faith

  1295. in Jesus

  1296. eternal

  1297. perpetual

  1298. priesthood

  1299. we are

  1300. interceded

  1301. for

  1302. totally

  1303. totally

  1304. he does

  1305. it all

  1306. he catches

  1307. every

  1308. heavenward

  1309. prayer

  1310. and he

  1311. intercedes

  1312. for us

  1313. because he

  1314. always

  1315. lives

  1316. to make

  1317. intercession

  1318. for them

  1319. do you ever

  1320. grow weary

  1321. in your

  1322. praying

  1323. I do

  1324. I grow weary

  1325. in my

  1326. praying

  1327. my prayers

  1328. can be

  1329. so weak

  1330. just often

  1331. don't even

  1332. know

  1333. what

  1334. to pray

  1335. but praise

  1336. God

  1337. Christ

  1338. never

  1339. does

  1340. he is

  1341. self-existing

  1342. and self-sustaining

  1343. and he sits

  1344. at the right

  1345. hand of the

  1346. father

  1347. forever

  1348. he never

  1349. falls asleep

  1350. on the job

  1351. he never

  1352. takes a

  1353. bathroom

  1354. break

  1355. he never

  1356. ceases

  1357. to intercede

  1358. for us

  1359. that's a

  1360. reality

  1361. that you

  1362. can build

  1363. upon

  1364. if you

  1365. are in

  1366. Christ

  1367. he is

  1368. interceding

  1369. for you

  1370. the author

  1371. of Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:24

  1372. chapter 9

  1373. verse 24

  1374. says

  1375. Christ

  1376. has entered

  1377. into heaven

  1378. itself

  1379. now to

  1380. appear in

  1381. the presence

  1382. of God

  1383. on our

  1384. behalf

  1385. Paul

  1386. Paul writes

  1387. in Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1388. chapter 8

  1389. and verse

  1390. 34

  1391. who is

  1392. to

  1393. condemn

  1394. not even

  1395. myself

  1396. Christ

  1397. Jesus

  1398. is the

  1399. one who

  1400. died

  1401. more than

  1402. that who

  1403. was raised

  1404. who is at

  1405. the right

  1406. hand of

  1407. God

  1408. who indeed

  1409. is interceding

  1410. for us

  1411. he clothes us

  1412. in his righteousness

  1413. he gives us the

  1414. ability to draw

  1415. near to God

  1416. and he

  1417. cleans us up

  1418. and he cleans

  1419. up our prayers

  1420. so that we

  1421. would be

  1422. accepted

  1423. by God

  1424. he ushers

  1425. us

  1426. into his

  1427. presence

  1428. this is

  1429. astounding

  1430. Christ

  1431. is dumb

  1432. a 4th century

  1433. preacher

  1434. gives

  1435. a helpful

  1436. analogy

  1437. of this idea

  1438. of Jesus

  1439. interceding

  1440. for us

  1441. and I

  1442. quote from

  1443. Kent Hughes

  1444. commentary

  1445. on Hebrews

  1446. a young boy

  1447. whose father

  1448. was away

  1449. on a trip

  1450. wanted to

  1451. present his

  1452. father with

  1453. something that

  1454. would please

  1455. him

  1456. his mother

  1457. sent him

  1458. into the

  1459. garden

  1460. to gather

  1461. a bouquet

  1462. of flowers

  1463. moms I

  1464. don't know

  1465. if that's

  1466. really what

  1467. dads want

  1468. when they

  1469. come home

  1470. but

  1471. this young

  1472. boy's mom

  1473. did this

  1474. the little

  1475. boy

  1476. gathered a

  1477. sorry bouquet

  1478. of weeds

  1479. as well as

  1480. flowers

  1481. I think moms

  1482. have all

  1483. gotten one

  1484. of those

  1485. but when

  1486. the father

  1487. returned home

  1488. he was

  1489. presented with

  1490. a beautifully

  1491. arranged bouquet

  1492. for the

  1493. mother

  1494. had intervened

  1495. removing

  1496. all the

  1497. weeds

  1498. Jesus

  1499. cleans up

  1500. our

  1501. prayers

  1502. and he

  1503. most certainly

  1504. cleans up

  1505. us

  1506. so that we

  1507. can draw near

  1508. to God

  1509. in him

  1510. so Jesus

  1511. is superior

  1512. because of

  1513. a promise

  1514. and he is

  1515. superior because

  1516. of his

  1517. permanence

  1518. and lastly

  1519. he is

  1520. superior

  1521. because of

  1522. his

  1523. person

  1524. verse 26

  1525. and through

  1526. the end

  1527. of the text

  1528. for it was

  1529. indeed fitting

  1530. that we should

  1531. have such a

  1532. high priest

  1533. holy

  1534. innocent

  1535. unstained

  1536. separated from

  1537. sinners

  1538. and exalted

  1539. above the

  1540. heavens

  1541. he has no

  1542. need like

  1543. those high

  1544. priests to

  1545. offer

  1546. sacrifices

  1547. daily

  1548. first for

  1549. his own

  1550. sins

  1551. and then

  1552. for those

  1553. of the

  1554. people

  1555. since he

  1556. did this

  1557. once for

  1558. all

  1559. when he

  1560. offered up

  1561. himself

  1562. for the

  1563. law

  1564. appoints

  1565. men

  1566. in their

  1567. weakness

  1568. as high

  1569. priests

  1570. but the

  1571. word of

  1572. the oath

  1573. which came

  1574. later than

  1575. the law

  1576. appoints

  1577. a son

  1578. who has

  1579. been made

  1580. perfect

  1581. forever

  1582. now of

  1583. interest

  1584. these three

  1585. verses

  1586. it was

  1587. argued by

  1588. the ancient

  1589. Italian

  1590. commentator

  1591. Teodorico

  1592. something like

  1593. that

  1594. are an

  1595. old hymn

  1596. he called

  1597. it in his

  1598. commentary

  1599. a hymn

  1600. to the

  1601. high

  1602. priest

  1603. I hope

  1604. this was

  1605. true

  1606. it's very

  1607. possible that

  1608. the author

  1609. of Hebrews

  1610. is quoting

  1611. he's citing

  1612. a hymn

  1613. to this

  1614. little

  1615. Hebrew

  1616. church

  1617. they would

  1618. have been

  1619. familiar with

  1620. these words

  1621. in similar

  1622. fashion from

  1623. time to time

  1624. when we're

  1625. preaching

  1626. will remind

  1627. us of

  1628. something we

  1629. sing together

  1630. and we're

  1631. showing its

  1632. veracity

  1633. from the

  1634. scripture

  1635. it may be

  1636. that he's

  1637. intending to

  1638. sum up this

  1639. idea of

  1640. Christ's

  1641. priesthood

  1642. before he

  1643. moves into

  1644. him being a

  1645. priest of a

  1646. better covenant

  1647. with a

  1648. song

  1649. I like that

  1650. idea

  1651. whether or not

  1652. it's the case

  1653. the author of

  1654. Hebrews does

  1655. seem to

  1656. encapsulate all

  1657. that he has been

  1658. saying in

  1659. these final

  1660. three verses

  1661. he begins

  1662. this idea

  1663. of it being

  1664. fitting

  1665. that we should

  1666. have such a

  1667. high priest

  1668. and this is

  1669. better rendered

  1670. it's clunky

  1671. in English

  1672. but would be

  1673. better rendered

  1674. such a high

  1675. priest

  1676. exactly

  1677. befits

  1678. us

  1679. us

  1680. you see

  1681. the emphasis

  1682. here being

  1683. put on

  1684. what we

  1685. needed in

  1686. a high

  1687. priest

  1688. because of

  1689. our

  1690. fallen

  1691. condition

  1692. because we

  1693. are incapable

  1694. of pleasing

  1695. God

  1696. because no

  1697. man could go

  1698. to God

  1699. on our

  1700. behalf

  1701. because that

  1702. man is in

  1703. that same

  1704. fallen

  1705. condition

  1706. makes that

  1707. point in

  1708. verse 28

  1709. the law

  1710. points men

  1711. in their

  1712. weakness

  1713. and that

  1714. those high

  1715. priests

  1716. verse 27

  1717. had to

  1718. offer

  1719. sacrifices

  1720. daily

  1721. first for

  1722. their

  1723. sins

  1724. as humans

  1725. we all

  1726. find ourselves

  1727. in this

  1728. place

  1729. and so

  1730. no man

  1731. can intercede

  1732. for another

  1733. man

  1734. because of

  1735. our fallen

  1736. condition

  1737. such a

  1738. high priest

  1739. exactly

  1740. befits

  1741. us

  1742. because of

  1743. the

  1744. insufficiency

  1745. of the

  1746. law

  1747. to give

  1748. us

  1749. unfettered

  1750. access

  1751. to God

  1752. there's

  1753. no measure

  1754. of our

  1755. working

  1756. no amount

  1757. of sacrifice

  1758. that could

  1759. fully draw

  1760. us near

  1761. to God

  1762. the way

  1763. we can

  1764. in Christ

  1765. because of

  1766. this

  1767. condition

  1768. we need

  1769. a superior

  1770. priest

  1771. and Jesus

  1772. is that

  1773. priest

  1774. he is

  1775. holy

  1776. and

  1777. innocent

  1778. and

  1779. unstained

  1780. the text

  1781. tells us

  1782. he is

  1783. perfect

  1784. and this

  1785. is either

  1786. the author

  1787. of Hebrews

  1788. just building

  1789. upon that

  1790. idea

  1791. right

  1792. he is

  1793. without

  1794. sin

  1795. never

  1796. committed

  1797. it

  1798. he is

  1799. holy

  1800. like God

  1801. is holy

  1802. he is

  1803. unstained

  1804. not only

  1805. on the

  1806. outside

  1807. as the

  1808. Levitical

  1809. priesthood

  1810. had to

  1811. be

  1812. purified

  1813. on the

  1814. outside

  1815. but he

  1816. is also

  1817. unstained

  1818. on the

  1819. inside

  1820. his very

  1821. person

  1822. is without

  1823. stain

  1824. so he

  1825. may be

  1826. just

  1827. compounding

  1828. an idea

  1829. or

  1830. possibly

  1831. in relation

  1832. to God

  1833. he is

  1834. holy

  1835. like God

  1836. is holy

  1837. in relation

  1838. to man

  1839. he is

  1840. innocent

  1841. have never

  1842. committed

  1843. any crime

  1844. against man

  1845. and yet

  1846. tried

  1847. and condemned

  1848. and

  1849. in relation

  1850. to

  1851. himself

  1852. unstained

  1853. without

  1854. any

  1855. sin

  1856. either

  1857. way

  1858. idea

  1859. being

  1860. given

  1861. to

  1862. us

  1863. is

  1864. that

  1865. he is

  1866. perfect

  1867. right

  1868. he goes

  1869. on

  1870. to say

  1871. separated

  1872. from

  1873. sinners

  1874. most

  1875. likely

  1876. due to

  1877. the

  1878. context

  1879. of

  1880. this

  1881. letter

  1882. the

  1883. author

  1884. is

  1885. referring

  1886. to

  1887. his

  1888. distinction

  1889. from

  1890. the

  1891. Levitical

  1892. priesthood

  1893. some

  1894. suggest

  1895. that

  1896. because

  1897. he is

  1898. in

  1899. his

  1900. heavenly

  1901. session

  1902. he is

  1903. separated

  1904. from

  1905. sinners

  1906. but

  1907. the author

  1908. of

  1909. Hebrews

  1910. has

  1911. been

  1912. telling

  1913. us

  1914. that

  1915. we

  1916. have

  1917. this

  1918. very

  1919. near

  1920. priest

  1921. right

  1922. one

  1923. who

  1924. can

  1925. sympathize

  1926. with

  1927. us

  1928. in

  1929. our

  1930. weaknesses

  1931. this

  1932. does

  1933. not

  1934. seem

  1935. like

  1936. a

  1937. far

  1938. standing

  1939. off

  1940. separated

  1941. priest

  1942. but

  1943. a

  1944. close

  1945. priest

  1946. so

  1947. most

  1948. likely

  1949. he is

  1950. talking

  1951. about

  1952. this

  1953. distinction

  1954. from

  1955. the

  1956. Levitical

  1957. priesthood

  1958. because

  1959. verse 27

  1960. he has

  1961. no need

  1962. like

  1963. those

  1964. high

  1965. priests

  1966. to

  1967. offer

  1968. sacrifices

  1969. daily

  1970. first

  1971. for

  1972. his

  1973. own

  1974. sins

  1975. and

  1976. then

  1977. for

  1978. those

  1979. of

  1980. the

  1981. people

  1982. since

  1983. he

  1984. did

  1985. this

  1986. once

  1987. for

  1988. all

  1989. when

  1990. he

  1991. offered

  1992. up

  1993. himself

  1994. so

  1995. see

  1996. how

  1997. distinct

  1998. he

  1999. is

  2000. as

  2001. a

  2002. mcculls

  2003. a

  2004. priest

  2005. massively

  2006. different

  2007. not

  2008. only

  2009. is

  2010. he

  2011. the

  2012. great

  2013. high

  2014. priest

  2015. but

  2016. he

  2017. himself

  2018. is

  2019. the

  2020. sacrifice

  2021. that he

  2022. offered

  2023. the

  2024. weightiness

  2025. of our

  2026. sin

  2027. the

  2028. eternal

  2029. weight

  2030. of it

  2031. against

  2032. a

  2033. most

  2034. holy

  2035. eternally

  2036. holy

  2037. God

  2038. could

  2039. only

  2040. be

  2041. met

  2042. with

  2043. an

  2044. eternal

  2045. sacrifice

  2046. and

  2047. this

  2048. was

  2049. Christ

  2050. himself

  2051. and

  2052. because

  2053. of this

  2054. he is

  2055. exalted

  2056. above

  2057. the

  2058. heavens

  2059. speaks

  2060. to the

  2061. triumph

  2062. of his

  2063. resurrection

  2064. of his

  2065. ascension

  2066. and

  2067. of his

  2068. session

  2069. for the

  2070. law

  2071. appoints

  2072. men

  2073. in their

  2074. weakness

  2075. as high

  2076. priests

  2077. but the

  2078. word

  2079. of the

  2080. oath

  2081. the

  2082. promise

  2083. which

  2084. came

  2085. later

  2086. than

  2087. the

  2088. law

  2089. appoints

  2090. a son

  2091. who

  2092. has

  2093. been

  2094. made

  2095. perfect

  2096. forever

  2097. brings

  2098. us back

  2099. to this

  2100. idea

  2101. of the

  2102. perfection

  2103. of

  2104. Christ

  2105. in

  2106. perpetuity

  2107. forever

  2108. and ever

  2109. and ever

  2110. and the

  2111. author of

  2112. Hebrews

  2113. intends

  2114. to root

  2115. his

  2116. original

  2117. hearers

  2118. and us

  2119. today

  2120. in this

  2121. foundation

  2122. Jesus

  2123. is superior

  2124. because of

  2125. a promise

  2126. because of

  2127. his permanence

  2128. and because

  2129. of his

  2130. person

  2131. Jesus

  2132. is superior

  2133. because God

  2134. promised his

  2135. priesthood

  2136. because his

  2137. priesthood is

  2138. permanent

  2139. and because

  2140. his person

  2141. is perfect

  2142. the outcome

  2143. for God's

  2144. people

  2145. is inevitable

  2146. and it

  2147. is eternal

  2148. so beloved

  2149. hold fast

  2150. persevere

  2151. to the

  2152. end

  2153. for we

  2154. have a

  2155. superior

  2156. high priest

  2157. it does

  2158. not matter

  2159. if you

  2160. are in

  2161. Christ

  2162. what

  2163. troubles
