  1. It is our general habit as a church to preach through books of the Bible, verse by verse, working our way from the very beginning to the very end of each of them.

  2. But from time to time, we take breaks from the primary text to bring up other matters, other issues.

  3. This morning, we will once again be taking a break from our exposition of the book of Hebrews to continue what we purpose to make a periodically presented series on the gospel and counseling.

  4. Some of you may remember some months ago, we talked about the gospel and your sorrow.

  5. Beloved, it is altogether possible to understand the gospel for the salvation of your soul, which is its primary purpose.

  6. Praise God if we understand it in this way, that you would be saved from the judgment to come.

  7. But to miss that the gospel has implications for the way that you think and feel and act today.

  8. We flee to Christ to be saved from hell and we flee to Christ to be saved from sin, or at least we should.

  9. We have much opportunity as a church of the living God to make him known in the world through the careful application of the gospel to the daily struggles of this life.

  10. This certainly does not preclude gospel proclamation, but it should accompany it.

  11. So today's sermon is entitled The Gospel and Your Anxiety.

  12. I shared with you last week, having, through a number of circumstances, I think kind of a pile up in my own heart,

  13. having what I only know to describe as an anxiety attack.

  14. I kind of loaded us into the end of Hebrews chapter 7,

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  15. trying to give careful application to the necessity of a foundation, a life built on a foundation that is Christ.

  16. And I told you as I spoke about that off the cuff, that I ran for refuge to Philippians chapter 4, verses 4 through 8,

    Philippians 4:4–8

  17. each of us have and will likely experience some measure of anxiety.

  18. In this life.

  19. Certainly some of us have a greater propensity toward it than others.

  20. But it is inevitable that fallen people living in a fallen world will, from time to time, feel the weightiness of our reality.

  21. Some people are abundantly aware that they are anxious.

  22. Many are not.

  23. The truth is that none of us escape this.

  24. Some people experience crippling anxiety.

  25. Some of us just worry in a way that we should not.

  26. It is faithless worrying.

  27. If you aren't presently finding yourself an anxious person, you will at some point in your life, most likely.

  28. So I hope two things for our time together this morning.

  29. Number one, that you will have a clear understanding of your anxiety, your personal anxiety, and be better equipped to fight for your joy.

  30. And number two, that you will have a clear understanding of another's anxiety, and be better equipped to fight for their joy.

  31. This is why the title, the gospel, and your anxiety is applicable in either case.

  32. And we're going to continue to do that as we walk through this series periodically.

  33. Beloved, we are instructed to love one another.

  34. And Paul tells us in Galatians chapter 6 and verse 2 that if we love one another, we will bear another's burdens.

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  35. We are to take on the trouble of others.

  36. If you are in relationship with other people, you are going to be asked to give some measure of counsel.

  37. If you have any meaningful relationship, relationships that step off the computer screen and sit down together,

  38. you're going to have need to pick up somebody else's burden.

  39. And we should definitely aim to give biblical answers to spiritual problems.

  40. So I hope that you'll understand your anxiety, and I hope that you'll understand the anxiety of another.

  41. So Philippians chapter 4, verses 4 through 8.

    Philippians 4:4–8

  42. Before I read it, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  43. As such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  44. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  45. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  46. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  47. The Lord is at hand.

  48. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,

  49. let your requests be made known to God.

  50. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  51. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable,

  52. if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

  53. I was once at a biblical counseling conference some years ago, and in an afternoon session, the speaker began his lesson by saying,

  54. tell me what you worry about or what makes you angry, and I will show you your idols.

  55. And I love this kind of teaching.

  56. Many of you are patient with me under it.

  57. I like to state the premise up front, big and strong, to make you go, huh?

  58. I have discovered that often that makes you guys shut down and not listen to the explanation of the statement,

  59. which is what happened to me in this case, but I think in a most helpful way,

  60. because I found this emphatic statement just too strong not to wrestle out its implications.

  61. He probably did that.

  62. He was probably going on to say more about it, but the statement was so strong, I just had to say, wait, is that true?

  63. So I spent the next hour writing down things that worried me or angered me and tracing each thing to its source,

  64. really thinking about why is it that this worries me?

  65. Why is it that this thing angers me?

  66. And I was shocked to discover that most, if not all, of my worry was sinful anxiety.

  67. It had at its base some form of idolatry, a faith in something other than God.

  68. It was a good and instructive hour for me.

  69. Paul tells us in verse 6 of our text this morning, do not be anxious about anything.

  70. He gives the command to not be anxious.

  71. However, in 2 Corinthians 11, verse 28, he writes, as he's concluding all of the sufferings that he experiences,

    2 Corinthians 11:28

  72. he says, and apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.

  73. I take this to mean that it's possible to be faithfully concerned about a matter.

  74. Paul has the pressure of his anxiety, and I don't think he's suggesting to us that this is sinful in that case,

  75. but it is faith-filled anxiety.

  76. But the command here, Philippians chapter 4, to not be anxious about anything,

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  77. is in reference to a faithless concern.

  78. And this is an anxiety that must be remedied for our good and for the glory of God.

  79. Now, before I give you the outline for the text and we begin our study of it,

  80. I want you to see something significant.

  81. Everything Paul is teaching us is an expansion of what he has previously declared that we are.

  82. What he's teaching us to do, he's teaching because it comes from who we are.

  83. Let me show you this by looking up at verse 1 of chapter 4.

  84. He says,

  85. Now, this is all kinds of packed with identity, right?

  86. He calls them brothers.

  87. And ladies, even you want to be brothers in this sense, joined to the family of God,

  88. co-heirs with Christ.

  89. He says that he loves them and he longs for them, that they are his joy and his crown,

  90. and they are beloved.

  91. All kinds of identifiers.

  92. But the encouragement here is for them to stand firm thus in the Lord.

  93. What does standing firm look like?

  94. Well, he goes on in chapter 4 to explain this.

  95. Verse 2 and 3, Paul tells us, it is working toward and maintaining the unity of the church.

  96. And then the other things that follow in our text, which we'll go on to consider.

  97. But chapter 4, verse 1 begins with a therefore.

  98. Paul is saying, stand firm because of something.

  99. Because of a reality that he's already stated, he's saying, so stand firm.

  100. What is that something?

  101. It is the reality of who you and I are in Jesus Christ if we have placed saving faith in him.

  102. Look at the end of chapter 3, verse 20 and 21.

  103. But our citizenship is in heaven.

  104. And from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body

  105. by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

  106. This is the reality that he goes on then to say,

  107. therefore, brothers, the ones I love and long for, my joy, my crown, my beloved.

  108. It's coming out of this reality of who Christ is toward his people.

  109. Beloved, we are part of a theocracy being ruled by King Jesus,

  110. who is bringing all things under his reign.

  111. This is the reality of who we are that's meant to inform how we live.

  112. So there's a therefore.

  113. And now we've arrived at the outline for the text, which is as follows.

  114. And I never expect that you get all this down in your note taking.

  115. But for the sake of time, I like to give it to you, give you a structure and move on.

  116. So number one, fight for your joy.

  117. Number one, fight for your joy.

  118. Number two, be gracious toward others.

  119. Be gracious toward others.

  120. Number three, turn to God with all of your concerns.

  121. And number four, and you won't get this in the notes if you don't write really fast.

  122. Dehabituate by rehabituating.

  123. Dehabituate.

  124. That makes me smile more than Sunday with Sunday, doesn't it?

  125. Dehabituate by rehabituating.

  126. All right, number one, fight for your joy.

  127. Verse four, rejoice in the Lord.

  128. Always, again, I will say, rejoice.

  129. And I love that Paul adds emphasis, right, to the exhortation by saying it once again.

  130. And that's exactly what he's doing here, right?

  131. He's saying, rejoice.

  132. I'm just going to say it again because you need to get it.

  133. Rejoice.

  134. Beloved, lasting joy is not circumstantial.

  135. We may find temporary happiness in our circumstances.

  136. There are things in this world that are lesser joys, I would suggest to you, that are meant to point us to greater joys.

  137. But they're temporal.

  138. They don't last.

  139. And if we find all of our happiness, all of our joy in these things, we will just as readily find great misery in our circumstances.

  140. You have all lived long enough to have high highs and low lows.

  141. The children in the room know this.

  142. Life is tough.

  143. Paul here exhorts us, though, to rejoice always.

  144. To rejoice despite circumstances.

  145. He's saying it doesn't matter what the circumstance around you is.

  146. You should rejoice.

  147. How is this possible?

  148. It is possible if we find joy in an unchanging, eternal source of joy.

  149. And he says it in the text.

  150. Rejoice in the Lord.

  151. This is not some far-off concept.

  152. What he's saying to us is recognize who Christ is and who Christ is to you.

  153. Find in that an eternal source of joy.

  154. And if we rightly understand the weightiness of our sin before a most holy God,

  155. if we get our rebellion against him and the death that it deserves,

  156. if we have experienced in any measure a separation from God,

  157. how horrid that can be,

  158. then we have much to rejoice in as we draw near to God through Christ.

  159. And beloved, this is ultimately a battle of the mind.

  160. If you are to have joy, you're going to have to fight for joy.

  161. And this is a battle that will happen in your mind.

  162. If it's an uncircumstantial joy,

  163. it's not based on what's happening around you.

  164. It's based on what's happening within you.

  165. This will be a battle of the mind.

  166. I fear as a church, as I talk about the mindfulness of Christianity,

  167. that I sway us too far towards stoicism,

  168. that we separate out our thinking from our feeling.

  169. I never want to do this.

  170. But what we see happening so much in the church in America

  171. is that it's primarily emotionally driven.

  172. People are looking for spiritual highs.

  173. If the guitar riff is just right,

  174. it'll take us there.

  175. We should have feelings.

  176. That's what this verse is about.

  177. This is about rejoicing,

  178. but it's not because I've repeated the chorus for the 20th time,

  179. and everyone around me seems to be happy,

  180. and so I'm going to join in.

  181. It's about a mindful meditation on the truth of who Christ is

  182. and who He is to us that brings about this kind of joy.

  183. Non-circumstantial joy.

  184. Paul writes in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  185. Do not be conformed to this world,

  186. but be transformed, what?

  187. By feeling, no.

  188. By the renewal of your mind.

  189. We are dichotomous people.

  190. We are body, and we are soul.

  191. There's an outer, and there's an inner.

  192. And the way that our inner is shaped

  193. is through our mental faculty.

  194. We're transformed by the renewal of it.

  195. And I wish,

  196. I desperately wish as a pastor,

  197. that all we needed to do

  198. when anybody was experiencing any trouble in this world

  199. is declare to them the truth,

  200. and it would snap into place in their minds.

  201. And they would go,

  202. Oh, well then I have a great reason for joy.

  203. And off they'd go, joyous.

  204. It's a battle.

  205. We are left with our sinful flesh,

  206. being new creations,

  207. but we carry the baggage of who we once were.

  208. The old Nathan shows up all the time,

  209. tempts me away,

  210. causes me not to believe

  211. the great truth of who Christ is to me,

  212. to forget it.

  213. And so it has to be rehearsed,

  214. and rehearsed,

  215. and rehearsed.

  216. In our study of Hebrews,

  217. we will soon come to the end of chapter 10,

  218. where we see a suffering church

  219. acting absolutely bizarrely, right?

  220. Not at all like the world,

  221. but like transformed people.

  222. Hebrews chapter 10 and verse 34.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  223. The author writes,

  224. You had compassion on those in prison,

  225. and you joyfully accepted

  226. the plundering of your property.

  227. I don't know.

  228. I don't think I,

  229. I don't know that anybody here

  230. would have somebody ransack their house

  231. because they're a Christian,

  232. spray paint on the wall,

  233. go away Christian,

  234. would show up happy about that.

  235. Well, these weird Christians did.

  236. They rejoiced,

  237. and they joyfully accepted

  238. the plundering of their property.

  239. Why?

  240. Since you knew

  241. that you yourselves

  242. had a better possession

  243. and an abiding one.

  244. You knew you had a better possession

  245. and an abiding one.

  246. But if you've been with us

  247. in our study of Hebrews,

  248. you know the reason

  249. the letter's being written

  250. is because many of them

  251. were being tempted

  252. to abandon the faith.

  253. Things had gotten

  254. more uncomfortable.

  255. These Christians

  256. who once joyfully accepted

  257. the plundering of their property

  258. were now being tempted

  259. to forsake Christ altogether.

  260. And so they were having

  261. to rehearse once again.

  262. And the author of Hebrews

  263. is so carefully rehearsing

  264. for them who Christ is

  265. and who Christ is

  266. to them.

  267. Beloved,

  268. if you are in Christ,

  269. you have a better possession

  270. and an abiding one.

  271. Heavenly treasure.

  272. A future to look forward to

  273. that is going to be

  274. beyond our wildest imagination.

  275. And yet we get so fixated

  276. on the here and the now

  277. and the circumstance.

  278. And what Paul's here telling us

  279. is that we have to lift

  280. our minds beyond

  281. what's going on

  282. right around us.

  283. We have to look

  284. to the future reward

  285. because of what Christ

  286. has accomplished.

  287. John Newton,

  288. 18th century Anglican minister,

  289. famous for Amazing Grace,

  290. the hymn Amazing Grace,

  291. once wrote this,

  292. suppose a man was going

  293. to New York

  294. to take possession

  295. of a large estate

  296. and his carriage

  297. should break down

  298. one mile before he got

  299. to the city,

  300. which obligated him

  301. to walk the rest of the way

  302. to the inheritance.

  303. So his circumstance changed.

  304. He's riding in comfort

  305. and now he has to walk.

  306. What a fool

  307. we should think him

  308. if we saw him

  309. wringing his hands

  310. and blubbering out

  311. all the remaining mile.

  312. My carriage is broken.

  313. My carriage is broken.

  314. And many of us

  315. act this way.

  316. We are headed

  317. to a great inheritance.

  318. And something bumps

  319. in the road

  320. and we fall apart.

  321. I fall apart.

  322. C.S. Lewis

  323. wrote in

  324. The Weight of Glory,

  325. We are half-hearted creatures,

  326. fooling about

  327. with drink

  328. and sex

  329. and ambition

  330. when infinite joy

  331. is offered to us.

  332. like an ignorant child

  333. who wants to go on

  334. making mud pies

  335. in a slum

  336. because he cannot

  337. imagine what is meant

  338. by the offer

  339. of a holiday

  340. at the sea.

  341. We are far

  342. too easily

  343. pleased.

  344. I love that.

  345. Beloved,

  346. we have to fight

  347. for our joy

  348. in the way we fight

  349. for our joy

  350. is with the truth

  351. of who we are

  352. in Christ

  353. and all that that means

  354. for our lives.

  355. So that's the first point.

  356. Fight for your joy.

  357. Secondly,

  358. be gracious

  359. towards others.

  360. We see this in

  361. verse 5.

  362. Let your

  363. reasonableness

  364. be known

  365. to everyone.

  366. Now,

  367. I think,

  368. I hope,

  369. you're listening enough

  370. to go,

  371. why is the point

  372. be gracious

  373. toward others

  374. if we're to let

  375. our reasonableness

  376. be known

  377. to everyone?

  378. And that's because

  379. the Greek word

  380. translated reasonableness

  381. in the ESV,

  382. which is what

  383. most of us here

  384. are using,

  385. is a very,

  386. very rich word.

  387. It's one of those

  388. difficult words

  389. where there's not

  390. a fantastic

  391. English equivalent

  392. to it.

  393. It needs phrasing

  394. and so it gets

  395. brought down

  396. to a single word

  397. which just falls

  398. a little short

  399. of what it means.

  400. Commentators

  401. and translators

  402. have varied widely

  403. on its rendering.

  404. Here's some examples

  405. for you.

  406. Reasonableness,

  407. generosity,

  408. goodwill,

  409. friendliness,

  410. magnanimity,

  411. charity,

  412. mercy,

  413. leniency,

  414. big-heartedness,

  415. moderation,

  416. forbearance,

  417. and gentleness

  418. are some of the

  419. attempts to capture

  420. the meaning

  421. of this word.

  422. Possibly

  423. the best word,

  424. and I am no

  425. Bible translator

  426. nor should I be.

  427. So I'm not

  428. standing in judgment

  429. over our ESV translators,

  430. but possibly

  431. the best word

  432. is

  433. graciousness.

  434. So it has

  435. more latitude

  436. than I thought

  437. of it,

  438. even narrowly

  439. thinking of it

  440. as reasonableness

  441. as it concerns

  442. anxiety.

  443. That we want

  444. other people

  445. to see

  446. our reasonableness

  447. because

  448. the end of verse 5

  449. says the Lord

  450. is at hand.

  451. So we want

  452. others to see

  453. that we understand

  454. that the Lord

  455. is at hand.

  456. And it does

  457. include this idea,

  458. right?

  459. Reasonableness

  460. is a fair word

  461. to put

  462. in that place.

  463. But the aim

  464. of it

  465. is that we're

  466. doing that

  467. for the sake

  468. of others.

  469. That we're doing it

  470. in order to

  471. serve

  472. others.

  473. Some of

  474. those words

  475. that I rattled

  476. off to you.

  477. Generosity,

  478. goodwill,

  479. charity,

  480. mercy,

  481. leniency,

  482. aiming at

  483. helping

  484. others,

  485. and some

  486. of those

  487. renderings

  488. like

  489. forbearance,

  490. magnanimity,

  491. goodwill,

  492. because we

  493. may find

  494. that it's

  495. people

  496. that are

  497. the circumstance

  498. that's causing

  499. our anxiety.

  500. very often

  501. this can be

  502. the case.

  503. So it is a

  504. complex word

  505. and it's a

  506. many-layered

  507. word and

  508. probably we

  509. could have

  510. just talked

  511. about verse

  512. five this

  513. morning.

  514. For the sake

  515. of time,

  516. we won't

  517. labor on

  518. with it.

  519. But how

  520. we respond

  521. to the

  522. challenges

  523. of life

  524. have bearing

  525. on other

  526. people.

  527. And at the

  528. end of verse

  529. five,

  530. we can see

  531. that we are

  532. meant to

  533. express

  534. the reality

  535. in the

  536. way that

  537. we act

  538. that the

  539. Lord

  540. is at

  541. hand.

  542. And it's

  543. a very

  544. interesting

  545. phrase to

  546. be at

  547. the end

  548. of verse

  549. five.

  550. Some would

  551. suggest it

  552. belongs at

  553. the beginning

  554. of verse

  555. six.

  556. And these

  557. separations are

  558. not inspired.

  559. Neither is

  560. the punctuation

  561. because there

  562. is no

  563. punctuation

  564. in Greek.

  565. So translators

  566. do this

  567. very difficult

  568. and careful

  569. work of

  570. putting a

  571. period at

  572. the end

  573. of everyone.

  574. starting a

  575. new sentence

  576. with the

  577. Lord

  578. is at

  579. hand

  580. and then

  581. a

  582. semicolon.

  583. I am not

  584. nearly

  585. intelligent

  586. enough to

  587. tell you

  588. exactly

  589. which it

  590. belongs

  591. to,

  592. but I

  593. think

  594. that it

  595. links

  596. the two

  597. things

  598. together

  599. to be

  600. sure.

  601. Paul is

  602. not rapid

  603. fire

  604. shooting off

  605. exhortations.

  606. He's bringing

  607. together an

  608. idea about

  609. what the

  610. Christian life

  611. should look

  612. like as it

  613. stands firm

  614. in the

  615. reality of

  616. who we

  617. are in

  618. Christ.

  619. And so

  620. we're meant

  621. to display

  622. to other

  623. people

  624. that God

  625. is near.

  626. Beloved,

  627. this is an

  628. astounding

  629. reality.

  630. I think that

  631. I too often

  632. take it for

  633. granted that

  634. I have full

  635. unfettered

  636. access to

  637. the throne

  638. of God.

  639. It's like

  640. this assumed

  641. thing for me

  642. sometimes.

  643. It's not

  644. extremely

  645. precious

  646. that the

  647. God of

  648. the

  649. universe,

  650. infinite,

  651. eternal,

  652. all-powerful,

  653. like why

  654. should I

  655. have any

  656. access at

  657. all to

  658. such a

  659. God?

  660. But as

  661. we learn

  662. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  663. chapter 7,

  664. because of

  665. Jesus'

  666. priesthood,

  667. through

  668. him we

  669. can draw

  670. near

  671. to God.

  672. It's an

  673. incredible

  674. reality that

  675. he has

  676. great care

  677. for us,

  678. that he

  679. is in

  680. the

  681. midst

  682. of

  683. the

  684. circumstances

  685. in which

  686. we walk.

  687. So we

  688. should fight

  689. for our

  690. joy,

  691. we should

  692. be gracious

  693. toward others.

  694. Third,

  695. turn to

  696. God

  697. with all

  698. of your

  699. concerns.

  700. Turn to

  701. God with

  702. all of

  703. your

  704. concerns.

  705. Verses

  706. 6 and

  707. 7,

  708. Paul says,

  709. do not be

  710. anxious about

  711. anything,

  712. but in

  713. everything

  714. by prayer

  715. and supplication

  716. with

  717. thanksgiving,

  718. let your

  719. request be

  720. made known

  721. to God,

  722. and the

  723. peace of

  724. God,

  725. which

  726. surpasses

  727. all

  728. understanding,

  729. will guard

  730. your hearts

  731. and your

  732. minds in

  733. Christ Jesus.

  734. There is

  735. an alternative

  736. to your

  737. anxiety

  738. and mine.

  739. Faith.

  740. This is the

  741. alternative.

  742. Believing

  743. in the

  744. promises

  745. of God.

  746. Paul says,

  747. do not be

  748. anxious about

  749. anything,

  750. but in

  751. everything,

  752. we can

  753. turn

  754. to God.

  755. Having been

  756. granted

  757. full,

  758. unfettered

  759. access to

  760. God.

  761. The Lord

  762. is at

  763. hand.

  764. Beloved,

  765. we can

  766. give everything

  767. over to

  768. Him.

  769. And if we

  770. have a small

  771. view of

  772. God,

  773. we will

  774. not think

  775. that He

  776. can do

  777. anything

  778. about

  779. anything.

  780. But if we

  781. have a

  782. good and

  783. proper high

  784. view of

  785. God,

  786. that's an

  787. astounding

  788. reality.

  789. Why would

  790. I not,

  791. rightly

  792. considering

  793. who God

  794. is,

  795. give

  796. everything

  797. to Him,

  798. creator and

  799. sustainer of

  800. the universe?

  801. I should.

  802. I should

  803. necessarily.

  804. How often

  805. do we find

  806. ourselves so

  807. very

  808. prayerless?

  809. Given the

  810. great gift

  811. of being

  812. able to

  813. enter the

  814. presence

  815. of God

  816. Almighty

  817. and we

  818. stay in

  819. our own

  820. minds,

  821. our own

  822. inner

  823. dialogues,

  824. our dialogue

  825. with one

  826. another,

  827. how often

  828. do we talk

  829. about our

  830. problems and

  831. we don't

  832. go to the

  833. Lord together

  834. with our

  835. problems?

  836. It's an

  837. astounding

  838. thing,

  839. as if

  840. He's a

  841. man and

  842. can't be

  843. bothered.

  844. He's God

  845. Almighty.

  846. He can

  847. handle

  848. anything

  849. that you

  850. throw at

  851. Him.

  852. prayer,

  853. supplication,

  854. and requests

  855. are all

  856. synonyms.

  857. You don't

  858. have to

  859. think too

  860. far out

  861. beyond this.

  862. And they

  863. all refer

  864. to direct

  865. petitions

  866. made of

  867. God.

  868. I believe

  869. that Paul

  870. uses this

  871. repetition

  872. to note

  873. that our

  874. going to

  875. God with

  876. all of our

  877. concerns

  878. will be

  879. often and

  880. it will

  881. be varied.

  882. It's going

  883. to have to

  884. happen all

  885. the time.

  886. and it's

  887. going to

  888. have to

  889. happen about

  890. a variety

  891. of issues.

  892. To not

  893. be anxious,

  894. we will

  895. need to

  896. pray.

  897. And we

  898. will need

  899. to pray.

  900. And we

  901. will need

  902. to pray.

  903. If we're

  904. going to

  905. go with

  906. thanksgiving

  907. in everything,

  908. we're going

  909. to be

  910. praying

  911. continually.

  912. And Paul

  913. instructs us

  914. to do this

  915. as we're

  916. doing it

  917. with

  918. thanksgiving.

  919. it is

  920. not

  921. unlike us

  922. to go

  923. to God

  924. demanding

  925. things of

  926. him,

  927. not

  928. humble,

  929. acting as

  930. if we

  931. deserve

  932. anything.

  933. Paul

  934. is helping

  935. us to

  936. see that

  937. we should

  938. go to

  939. God

  940. recognizing

  941. what he's

  942. already

  943. done.

  944. The fact

  945. that God

  946. has done

  947. much,

  948. already

  949. worked in

  950. so many

  951. ways,

  952. gives to

  953. the Christian

  954. a confidence

  955. that he

  956. will

  957. continue

  958. to do

  959. so.

  960. We're

  961. in the

  962. midst

  963. of a

  964. tough

  965. circumstance.

  966. It can

  967. be so

  968. difficult

  969. to

  970. remember

  971. or to

  972. notice

  973. anything

  974. positive.

  975. We get

  976. consumed

  977. with that.

  978. In our

  979. sinful nature,

  980. we are

  981. this way.

  982. Somebody

  983. has a

  984. bad

  985. experience

  986. at a

  987. business,

  988. they're

  989. likely

  990. to

  991. share

  992. it

  993. with

  994. ten

  995. people.

  996. They

  997. have

  998. a

  999. good

  1000. experience,

  1001. they're

  1002. likely

  1003. to

  1004. share

  1005. it

  1006. with

  1007. two.

  1008. Oh,

  1009. the

  1010. world

  1011. of

  1012. online

  1013. reviews.

  1014. Just,

  1015. boy,

  1016. are they

  1017. brutal.

  1018. Boy,

  1019. are they

  1020. brutal.

  1021. A really

  1022. simple

  1023. example

  1024. in our

  1025. life,

  1026. I was

  1027. just

  1028. noting

  1029. this

  1030. to my

  1031. wife,

  1032. Sam,

  1033. the

  1034. other

  1035. day.

  1036. We

  1037. use

  1038. a

  1039. stuff

  1040. that

  1041. gets

  1042. diluted

  1043. really

  1044. heavily

  1045. called

  1046. thieves.

  1047. Like

  1048. thieves

  1049. cleaner,

  1050. it's a

  1051. good

  1052. cleaner.

  1053. And

  1054. we

  1055. have

  1056. a

  1057. bottle

  1058. that

  1059. we

  1060. wipe

  1061. down

  1062. just

  1063. about

  1064. everything

  1065. with.

  1066. And

  1067. it

  1068. seems

  1069. like

  1070. that

  1071. bottle

  1072. is

  1073. always

  1074. running

  1075. out

  1076. of

  1077. liquid.

  1078. It

  1079. seems

  1080. like

  1081. I'm

  1082. constantly

  1083. going,

  1084. gosh,

  1085. the

  1086. thieves

  1087. is

  1088. out

  1089. again.

  1090. But

  1091. that

  1092. bottle

  1093. gets

  1094. filled

  1095. up.

  1096. It

  1097. clearly

  1098. gets

  1099. filled

  1100. up.

  1101. Sam's

  1102. not

  1103. carefully

  1104. metering

  1105. off

  1106. just a

  1107. little

  1108. tiny

  1109. bit

  1110. at

  1111. the

  1112. bottle

  1113. to

  1114. frustrate

  1115. me

  1116. all

  1117. the

  1118. time.

  1119. That

  1120. bottle

  1121. gets

  1122. filled

  1123. to

  1124. the

  1125. top

  1126. and

  1127. it

  1128. gets

  1129. used.

  1130. And

  1131. I'm

  1132. never

  1133. thankful

  1134. when

  1135. it's

  1136. full.

  1137. It's

  1138. inclined

  1139. that

  1140. way.

  1141. The

  1142. thieves

  1143. is

  1144. out

  1145. again.

  1146. Rather

  1147. than

  1148. praising

  1149. the

  1150. Lord

  1151. that

  1152. the

  1153. thieves

  1154. is

  1155. full

  1156. and

  1157. half

  1158. full

  1159. and

  1160. a

  1161. third

  1162. full

  1163. and

  1164. a

  1165. quarter

  1166. full.

  1167. That's

  1168. a lot

  1169. of

  1170. times.

  1171. There's

  1172. plenty

  1173. of

  1174. liquid

  1175. in

  1176. that

  1177. bottle.

  1178. But

  1179. my

  1180. mind

  1181. attunes

  1182. to

  1183. the

  1184. negative

  1185. thing.

  1186. This

  1187. is

  1188. what

  1189. I'm

  1190. trying

  1191. to

  1192. say.

  1193. And

  1194. especially

  1195. when

  1196. in

  1197. the

  1198. midst

  1199. of

  1200. difficult

  1201. times.

  1202. We

  1203. have

  1204. to

  1205. stop

  1206. this

  1207. battle

  1208. in

  1209. our

  1210. minds

  1211. and

  1212. reflect

  1213. upon

  1214. the

  1215. good

  1216. things

  1217. that

  1218. God

  1219. has

  1220. done

  1221. and

  1222. he

  1223. is

  1224. doing

  1225. and

  1226. it

  1227. will

  1228. give

  1229. us

  1230. the

  1231. confidence

  1232. that

  1233. he

  1234. will

  1235. continue

  1236. to

  1237. do.

  1238. His

  1239. promises

  1240. are

  1241. sure

  1242. beloved.

  1243. By

  1244. the

  1245. mere

  1246. fact

  1247. that

  1248. he's

  1249. God

  1250. and

  1251. he

  1252. said

  1253. he

  1254. would

  1255. do

  1256. it

  1257. we

  1258. should

  1259. believe

  1260. this.

  1261. But

  1262. he's

  1263. also

  1264. shown

  1265. us

  1266. so

  1267. much

  1268. loving

  1269. kindness.

  1270. In

  1271. our

  1272. frailty

  1273. we

  1274. can

  1275. grab

  1276. on

  1277. to

  1278. this

  1279. that

  1280. he'll

  1281. continue

  1282. to

  1283. do.

  1284. We

  1285. far

  1286. too

  1287. often

  1288. find

  1289. ourselves

  1290. prayerless

  1291. in

  1292. trials.

  1293. No

  1294. wonder

  1295. we

  1296. become

  1297. anxious.

  1298. No

  1299. wonder.

  1300. 1

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1301. Peter

  1302. chapter

  1303. 5

  1304. 6

  1305. through

  1306. 8

  1307. Peter

  1308. writes

  1309. humble

  1310. yourselves

  1311. under

  1312. the mighty

  1313. hand

  1314. of God

  1315. so

  1316. at the

  1317. proper

  1318. time

  1319. he

  1320. may

  1321. exalt

  1322. you.

  1323. Casting

  1324. all

  1325. your

  1326. anxieties

  1327. on

  1328. him

  1329. because

  1330. he

  1331. cares

  1332. for

  1333. you.

  1334. He

  1335. is

  1336. concerned

  1337. for

  1338. you.

  1339. We

  1340. can

  1341. cast

  1342. all

  1343. of

  1344. our

  1345. anxiety

  1346. on

  1347. him.

  1348. And

  1349. as

  1350. I

  1351. read

  1352. commentaries

  1353. about

  1354. this

  1355. particular

  1356. verse

  1357. all

  1358. the

  1359. commentators

  1360. stopped

  1361. there.

  1362. Stopped

  1363. at the

  1364. end

  1365. of

  1366. verse

  1367. 7

  1368. casting

  1369. all

  1370. your

  1371. anxieties

  1372. on

  1373. him

  1374. because

  1375. he

  1376. cares

  1377. for

  1378. you.

  1379. But

  1380. I

  1381. want

  1382. to

  1383. read

  1384. verse

  1385. 8

  1386. because

  1387. I

  1388. think

  1389. it's

  1390. really

  1391. helpful

  1392. to

  1393. us

  1394. as

  1395. we

  1396. talk

  1397. about

  1398. it

  1399. being

  1400. a

  1401. battle

  1402. of

  1403. the

  1404. mind.

  1405. Peter

  1406. writes

  1407. be

  1408. sober

  1409. minded.

  1410. Cast

  1411. all your

  1412. anxieties

  1413. on

  1414. him

  1415. because

  1416. he

  1417. cares

  1418. for

  1419. you.

  1420. Be

  1421. sober

  1422. minded.

  1423. Be

  1424. watchful.

  1425. Why?

  1426. Your

  1427. adversary

  1428. the

  1429. devil

  1430. prowls

  1431. around

  1432. like a

  1433. roaring

  1434. lion

  1435. seeking

  1436. !

  1437. He

  1438. is

  1439. seeking

  1440. someone

  1441. to

  1442. devour.

  1443. Could

  1444. it be

  1445. that many

  1446. of us

  1447. are being

  1448. devoured

  1449. by

  1450. anxiety?

  1451. We are

  1452. minimizing

  1453. the glory

  1454. of God

  1455. the goodness

  1456. of the

  1457. gospel

  1458. in our

  1459. lives

  1460. because

  1461. we're

  1462. not

  1463. sober

  1464. minded

  1465. watchful

  1466. casting

  1467. all of

  1468. our

  1469. anxieties

  1470. on

  1471. him

  1472. because

  1473. he

  1474. cares

  1475. for

  1476. us.

  1477. My

  1478. mind

  1479. was

  1480. drawn

  1481. to

  1482. a

  1483. hymn

  1484. we

  1485. sing

  1486. from

  1487. time

  1488. to

  1489. time

  1490. called

  1491. What a

  1492. Friend

  1493. We

  1494. Have

  1495. in

  1496. Jesus

  1497. to

  1498. this

  1499. verse

  1500. Oh

  1501. what

  1502. peace

  1503. we

  1504. often

  1505. forfeit

  1506. Oh

  1507. what

  1508. needless

  1509. pain

  1510. we

  1511. bear

  1512. all

  1513. because

  1514. we

  1515. do

  1516. not

  1517. carry

  1518. everything

  1519. to

  1520. God

  1521. in

  1522. prayer.

  1523. So

  1524. go to

  1525. God

  1526. with

  1527. all

  1528. of

  1529. your

  1530. concerns.

  1531. And

  1532. then

  1533. there's

  1534. a

  1535. promise

  1536. in

  1537. verse

  1538. 7

  1539. And

  1540. the

  1541. peace

  1542. of

  1543. God

  1544. which

  1545. surpasses

  1546. all

  1547. understanding

  1548. will

  1549. guard

  1550. your

  1551. hearts

  1552. and

  1553. your

  1554. minds

  1555. in

  1556. Christ

  1557. Jesus.

  1558. Now

  1559. I've

  1560. wrestled

  1561. with

  1562. this

  1563. a

  1564. little

  1565. this

  1566. week.

  1567. My

  1568. immediate

  1569. assumption

  1570. of

  1571. this

  1572. verse

  1573. has

  1574. always

  1575. been

  1576. that

  1577. there

  1578. would

  1579. be

  1580. a

  1581. feeling

  1582. of

  1583. peace

  1584. that

  1585. would

  1586. come

  1587. that

  1588. I

  1589. would

  1590. feel

  1591. peaceful

  1592. if

  1593. I

  1594. just

  1595. rightly

  1596. cast

  1597. anxiety

  1598. and

  1599. I'm

  1600. just

  1601. no

  1602. longer

  1603. so

  1604. sure

  1605. that

  1606. that's

  1607. what

  1608. Paul

  1609. is

  1610. trying

  1611. to

  1612. communicate

  1613. here.

  1614. I

  1615. have

  1616. often

  1617. said

  1618. it's

  1619. a

  1620. piece

  1621. that's

  1622. weird

  1623. and

  1624. strange.

  1625. It's

  1626. a

  1627. piece

  1628. that

  1629. surpasses

  1630. understanding

  1631. and

  1632. maybe

  1633. that's

  1634. still

  1635. tied

  1636. into

  1637. the

  1638. meaning.

  1639. I

  1640. just

  1641. didn't

  1642. have

  1643. time

  1644. to

  1645. work

  1646. it

  1647. all

  1648. out

  1649. this

  1650. week.

  1651. But

  1652. I

  1653. think

  1654. as we

  1655. go back

  1656. to the

  1657. end of

  1658. chapter

  1659. 3

  1660. and

  1661. Paul

  1662. is

  1663. stating

  1664. who

  1665. we

  1666. are

  1667. in

  1668. Christ

  1669. and

  1670. the

  1671. beginning

  1672. of

  1673. chapter

  1674. 4

  1675. and

  1676. verse

  1677. 1

  1678. that

  1679. we're

  1680. to

  1681. stand

  1682. firm

  1683. in

  1684. that

  1685. reality

  1686. that

  1687. what

  1688. Paul

  1689. is

  1690. talking

  1691. about

  1692. is

  1693. the

  1694. peace

  1695. that

  1696. we

  1697. have

  1698. with

  1699. God.

  1700. The

  1701. peace

  1702. of

  1703. God

  1704. that

  1705. we

  1706. have

  1707. with

  1708. God

  1709. because

  1710. Christ

  1711. has

  1712. made

  1713. peace

  1714. on

  1715. our

  1716. behalf.

  1717. Because

  1718. we've

  1719. entered

  1720. in

  1721. now

  1722. as

  1723. these

  1724. citizens.

  1725. We're

  1726. not

  1727. those

  1728. if you

  1729. go up

  1730. further

  1731. in

  1732. the

  1733. end

  1734. of

  1735. chapter

  1736. 3

  1737. who

  1738. are

  1739. going

  1740. to

  1741. be

  1742. cut

  1743. off

  1744. and

  1745. destroyed.

  1746. We're

  1747. citizens.

  1748. We have

  1749. peace

  1750. with

  1751. God.

  1752. Romans

    Romans 5:1

  1753. chapter

  1754. 5

  1755. verse

  1756. 1

  1757. Therefore

  1758. since

  1759. we

  1760. have

  1761. been

  1762. justified

  1763. by

  1764. faith

  1765. we

  1766. have

  1767. peace

  1768. with

  1769. God

  1770. through

  1771. our

  1772. Lord

  1773. Jesus

  1774. Christ.

  1775. And

  1776. I

  1777. think

  1778. that

  1779. this

  1780. is

  1781. a

  1782. peace

  1783. that

  1784. surpasses

  1785. all

  1786. understanding.

  1787. Why

  1788. oh

  1789. Lord

  1790. such

  1791. grace

  1792. to

  1793. me?

  1794. Why

  1795. would

  1796. you

  1797. have

  1798. such

  1799. kindness

  1800. and

  1801. compassion?

  1802. Why

  1803. would

  1804. you

  1805. be

  1806. near

  1807. to

  1808. me?

  1809. Why

  1810. would

  1811. you

  1812. care

  1813. for

  1814. me?

  1815. And

  1816. Paul

  1817. says

  1818. that

  1819. this

  1820. reality

  1821. will

  1822. be

  1823. set

  1824. as

  1825. a

  1826. guard,

  1827. as

  1828. a

  1829. sentinel,

  1830. our

  1831. hearts

  1832. and

  1833. our

  1834. minds

  1835. in

  1836. Christ

  1837. Jesus.

  1838. He

  1839. lands

  1840. that

  1841. reality

  1842. that

  1843. we

  1844. are

  1845. found

  1846. in

  1847. Jesus.

  1848. And

  1849. so

  1850. as

  1851. we

  1852. contemplate

  1853. in

  1854. prayer

  1855. with

  1856. this

  1857. thanksgiving

  1858. who

  1859. Christ

  1860. is

  1861. and

  1862. who

  1863. Christ

  1864. is

  1865. to

  1866. us,

  1867. we

  1868. can

  1869. be

  1870. joy

  1871. filled

  1872. and

  1873. we

  1874. can

  1875. be

  1876. faith

  1877. filled

  1878. and

  1879. not

  1880. anxious.

  1881. Jesus

  1882. taught

  1883. his

  1884. disciples

  1885. in

  1886. Luke

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1887. chapter

  1888. 12

  1889. beginning

  1890. in

  1891. verse

  1892. 22.

  1893. Do not

  1894. be

  1895. anxious

  1896. about

  1897. your

  1898. life,

  1899. what

  1900. you

  1901. will

  1902. eat

  1903. nor

  1904. about

  1905. your

  1906. body,

  1907. what

  1908. you

  1909. will

  1910. put

  1911. on.

  1912. For

  1913. life

  1914. is

  1915. more

  1916. than

  1917. food

  1918. and

  1919. the

  1920. body

  1921. more

  1922. than

  1923. clothing.

  1924. Consider

  1925. the

  1926. ravens,

  1927. they

  1928. neither

  1929. sow

  1930. nor

  1931. reap,

  1932. they

  1933. have

  1934. neither

  1935. storehouse

  1936. nor

  1937. barn,

  1938. and

  1939. yet

  1940. God

  1941. feeds

  1942. them.

  1943. Of

  1944. how

  1945. much

  1946. more

  1947. value

  1948. are

  1949. you

  1950. than

  1951. the

  1952. birds?

  1953. Much

  1954. more

  1955. is

  1956. what

  1957. Jesus

  1958. is

  1959. saying.

  1960. So

  1961. much

  1962. more.

  1963. And

  1964. which

  1965. of

  1966. you

  1967. by

  1968. being

  1969. anxious

  1970. can

  1971. add

  1972. a

  1973. single

  1974. hour

  1975. to

  1976. a

  1977. span

  1978. of

  1979. life?

  1980. If

  1981. then

  1982. you

  1983. are

  1984. not

  1985. able

  1986. to

  1987. do

  1988. as

  1989. small

  1990. a

  1991. thing

  1992. as

  1993. that,

  1994. why

  1995. are

  1996. you

  1997. anxious

  1998. about

  1999. the

  2000. rest?

  2001. Consider

  2002. the

  2003. lilies,

  2004. how

  2005. they

  2006. grow,

  2007. they

  2008. neither

  2009. toil

  2010. nor

  2011. spin,

  2012. yet

  2013. I

  2014. tell

  2015. you,

  2016. even

  2017. Solomon

  2018. in

  2019. all

  2020. his

  2021. glory

  2022. was

  2023. not

  2024. arrayed

  2025. like

  2026. one

  2027. of

  2028. these.

  2029. But

  2030. if

  2031. God

  2032. so

  2033. clothes

  2034. the

  2035. grass

  2036. which

  2037. is

  2038. alive

  2039. in

  2040. the

  2041. field

  2042. today

  2043. and

  2044. tomorrow

  2045. was

  2046. thrown

  2047. into

  2048. the

  2049. oven,

  2050. how

  2051. much

  2052. more

  2053. will

  2054. he

  2055. clothe

  2056. you,

  2057. oh

  2058. you

  2059. of

  2060. little

  2061. faith?

  2062. And

  2063. do

  2064. not

  2065. seek

  2066. what

  2067. you

  2068. are

  2069. to

  2070. eat,

  2071. what

  2072. you

  2073. are

  2074. to

  2075. drink,

  2076. nor

  2077. be

  2078. worried.

  2079. For

  2080. all

  2081. the

  2082. nations

  2083. of

  2084. the

  2085. world

  2086. seek

  2087. after

  2088. these

  2089. things,

  2090. and

  2091. your

  2092. father

  2093. knows

  2094. that

  2095. you

  2096. need

  2097. them.

  2098. Instead

  2099. seek

  2100. his

  2101. kingdom,

  2102. and

  2103. these

  2104. things

  2105. will

  2106. be

  2107. added

  2108. to

  2109. you.

  2110. Fear

  2111. not

  2112. little

  2113. flock,

  2114. for

  2115. it

  2116. is

  2117. your

  2118. father's

  2119. good

  2120. pleasure

  2121. to

  2122. give

  2123. you

  2124. the

  2125. kingdom.

  2126. If

  2127. we

  2128. are

  2129. in

  2130. Christ

  2131. and

  2132. we

  2133. are

  2134. mindful

  2135. of

  2136. this,

  2137. we

  2138. are

  2139. faith

  2140. filled

  2141. because

  2142. of

  2143. this,

  2144. then

  2145. we

  2146. have

  2147. no

  2148. need

  2149. to

  2150. be

  2151. anxious.

  2152. We

  2153. can

  2154. have

  2155. great

  2156. and

  2157. abounding

  2158. joy.

  2159. because

  2160. Christ.

  2161. I

  2162. came

  2163. across

  2164. this

  2165. old

  2166. quotation

  2167. and

  2168. I

  2169. stuck

  2170. it

  2171. here

  2172. and

  2173. I'm

  2174. wondering

  2175. now

  2176. if

  2177. it

  2178. even

  2179. fits

  2180. but

  2181. I'm

  2182. going

  2183. to

  2184. read

  2185. it

  2186. to

  2187. you

  2188. all

  2189. the

  2190. same.

  2191. Maybe

  2192. as we

  2193. tie

  2194. the

  2195. idea

  2196. of

  2197. joy

  2198. together.

  2199. This

  2200. was

  2201. the

  2202. account

  2203. of

  2204. the

  2205. conversion

  2206. of

  2207. Blaise

  2210. was

  2211. a

  2212. 17th

  2217. it

  2218. was

  2219. found

  2220. he

  2221. had

  2222. written

  2223. it

  2224. down

  2225. on

  2226. a

  2227. piece

  2228. of

  2229. paper

  2230. sewn

  2231. into

  2232. his

  2234. it

  2235. was

  2236. found

  2237. eight

  2250. and

  2251. this

  2333. whatever

  2334. is true

  2335. whatever

  2336. is honorable

  2337. whatever

  2338. is just

  2339. whatever

  2340. is pure

  2341. whatever

  2342. is lovely

  2343. whatever

  2344. is commendable

  2345. if there

  2346. is any

  2347. excellence

  2348. if there

  2349. is anything

  2350. worthy

  2351. of praise

  2352. think about

  2353. these things

  2354. we are not

  2355. going to

  2356. take the

  2357. time to

  2358. talk about

  2359. each of

  2360. those

  2361. things

  2362. right

  2363. there

  2364. are

  2365. things

  2366. to be

  2367. said

  2368. about

  2369. each

  2370. of

  2371. those

  2372. pure

  2373. lovely

  2374. commendable

  2375. right

  2376. he's

  2377. building

  2378. an idea

  2379. right

  2380. there

  2381. are

  2382. many

  2383. things

  2384. that

  2385. can

  2386. be

  2387. thought

  2388. about

  2389. that

  2390. are

  2391. going

  2392. to

  2393. be

  2394. good

  2395. for

  2396. our

  2397. thought

  2398. life

  2399. most

  2400. often

  2401. this

  2402. is preached

  2403. through

  2404. verse

  2405. 7

  2406. I

  2407. think

  2408. verse

  2409. 8

  2410. is

  2411. so

  2412. incredibly

  2413. important

  2414. as

  2415. we

  2416. continue

  2417. to

  2418. think

  2419. about

  2420. taking

  2421. our

  2422. thoughts

  2423. captive

  2424. battling

  2425. in

  2426. the

  2427. mind

  2428. that

  2429. we

  2430. would

  2431. think

  2432. about

  2433. stuff

  2434. that

  2435. is

  2436. helpful

  2437. to

  2438. us

  2439. rather than

  2440. fixating

  2441. on the

  2442. things

  2443. on the

  2444. circumstance

  2445. !

  2446. but

  2447. that

  2448. we

  2449. would

  2450. lift

  2451. our

  2452. minds

  2453. higher

  2454. we

  2455. are

  2456. creatures

  2457. of

  2458. habit

  2459. we

  2460. just

  2461. form

  2462. habits

  2463. so

  2464. readily

  2465. most

  2466. of them

  2467. bad

  2468. an

  2469. example

  2470. Sam

  2471. and I

  2472. recently

  2473. moved

  2474. we

  2475. moved

  2476. from

  2477. Gainesville

  2478. and it

  2479. took

  2480. me

  2481. a

  2482. full

  2483. week

  2484. of

  2485. turning

  2486. on

  2487. to

  2488. our

  2489. old

  2490. road

  2491. to

  2492. remember

  2493. that

  2494. we

  2495. didn't

  2496. live

  2497. there

  2498. anymore

  2499. I

  2500. made

  2501. a lot

  2502. of

  2503. detours

  2504. on

  2505. my

  2506. way

  2507. to

  2508. the

  2509. place

  2510. we're

  2511. currently

  2512. living

  2513. because

  2514. I

  2515. just

  2516. do

  2517. it

  2518. automatically

  2519. right

  2520. it's

  2521. the

  2522. impulse

  2523. the

  2524. natural

  2525. thing

  2526. that

  2527. I

  2528. do

  2529. I

  2530. bet

  2531. that

  2532. each

  2533. and

  2534. every

  2535. one

  2536. of

  2537. you

  2538. put

  2539. on

  2540. a

  2541. particular

  2542. shoe

  2543. first

  2544. and

  2545. you

  2546. probably

  2547. don't

  2548. know

  2549. which

  2550. one

  2551. it

  2552. is

  2553. but

  2554. I

  2555. bet

  2556. you

  2557. do

  2558. by

  2559. habit

  2560. they

  2561. just

  2562. tend

  2563. to

  2564. pick

  2565. up

  2566. whatever

  2567. mine's

  2568. my

  2569. right

  2570. because

  2571. I

  2572. paid

  2573. attention

  2574. to

  2575. that

  2576. kind

  2577. of

  2578. thing

  2579. but

  2580. you

  2581. don't

  2582. really

  2583. give

  2584. any

  2585. thought

  2586. to

  2587. it

  2588. at

  2589. all

  2590. at

  2591. the

  2592. end

  2593. of

  2594. the

  2595. first

  2596. song

  2597. set

  2598. Jordan

  2599. prayed

  2600. in a

  2601. place

  2602. he

  2603. doesn't

  2604. normally

  2605. pray

  2606. you

  2607. guys

  2608. noticed

  2609. that

  2610. or not

  2611. he

  2612. made a

  2613. little

  2614. comment

  2615. about

  2616. it

  2617. he

  2618. normally

  2619. prays

  2620. for the

  2621. preaching

  2622. at the

  2623. end

  2624. of

  2625. the

  2626. offering

  2627. he

  2628. said

  2629. a

  2630. little

  2631. prayer

  2632. at

  2633. that

  2634. point

  2635. and

  2636. I

  2637. got

  2638. panicky

  2639. because

  2640. I

  2641. thought

  2642. was

  2643. that

  2644. the

  2645. offering

  2646. song

  2647. I

  2648. don't

  2649. I

  2650. sort

  2651. of

  2652. grabbing

  2653. my

  2654. stuff

  2655. in the

  2656. back

  2657. to

  2658. come

  2659. up

  2660. front

  2661. and

  2662. I

  2663. went

  2664. oh

  2665. wait

  2666. wait

  2667. he

  2668. broke

  2669. out

  2670. of

  2671. the

  2672. routine

  2673. right

  2674. because

  2675. we

  2676. are

  2677. so

  2678. geared

  2679. habitually

  2680. and

  2681. so

  2682. if

  2683. we

  2684. are

  2685. to

  2686. change

  2687. in

  2688. this

  2689. case

  2690. the

  2691. way

  2692. that

  2693. we

  2694. think

  2695. we're

  2696. going

  2697. to

  2698. stop

  2699. thinking

  2700. negatively

  2701. we're

  2702. going

  2703. to

  2704. stop

  2705. focusing

  2706. on

  2707. the

  2708. circumstance

  2709. we're

  2710. going

  2711. to

  2712. have

  2713. to

  2714. work

  2715. at

  2716. refocusing

  2717. on

  2718. something

  2719. else

  2720. it's

  2721. not

  2722. merely

  2723. enough

  2724. to

  2725. put

  2726. off

  2727. sinful

  2728. thinking

  2729. because

  2730. then

  2731. there's

  2732. a

  2733. void

  2734. well

  2735. now

  2736. what

  2737. are

  2738. you

  2739. going

  2740. to

  2741. think

  2742. about

  2743. Paul

  2744. tells

  2745. you

  2746. what

  2747. to

  2748. think

  2749. about

  2750. true

  2751. and

  2752. honorable

  2753. and

  2754. just

  2755. and

  2756. pure

  2757. and

  2758. lovely

  2759. and

  2760. commendable

  2761. excellent

  2762. things

  2763. this

  2764. is

  2765. what

  2766. you

  2767. should

  2768. fill

  2769. your

  2770. mind

  2771. with

  2772. and

  2773. we

  2774. have

  2775. such

  2800. we

  2801. have

  2802. our

2925. it cannot be whipped up like instant pudding

2926. godliness doesn't come that way

  2927. discipline means work

2928. it means sustained daily efforts

2929. the word Paul used is the one from which the English word gymnastics and gymnasium

  2930. have been derived

2931. it is a term related to athletics

  2932. !

2933. an athlete becomes an expert only by years of hard practice

2934. there are no instant athletes

2935. it takes years of regular practice to achieve athletic skills

2936. no weightlifter for example says here's a very heavy weight I have never lifted weights before but that looks like the largest one

2937. I'll try to press it

2938. he's likely to break his back

2939. he can't do it that way

2940. he must start out with a small weight the first week then gradually over the months and years add heavier and heavier ones

2941. he must work up to the heaviest one

2942. nor does he decide this week I'll lift weights for five hours on Friday and then I'll forget about it for the next six weeks

  2943. athletes practice regularly

2944. usually every day for at least a short period of time

2945. they work daily day after day until what they are doing becomes

  2946. natural

  2947. second nature

  2948. right

  2949. habit

  2950. to them

2951. that is what an athlete does

2952. and that is exactly what is involved in the word that Paul used here

  2953. continued daily effort

  2954. is an essential element

  2955. of Christian discipline

2956. if we are to be a people who are not

  2957. anxious

2958. a people who are rejoicing always

2959. it's going to take daily

  2960. work

  2961. all of us

  2962. all of us desire

  2963. massive monumental

  2964. moments in our life

  2965. all of us want

  2966. in an instant

  2967. right

  2968. like chocolate pudding

  2969. to be whipped

  2970. into some new maturity

  2971. in our life

2972. and there have been times

  2973. maybe in your life

2974. certainly in the lives of others

2975. that we can read about

  2976. that there is

  2977. massive transformation

  2978. in their Christian

  2979. block

  2980. but most regularly

  2981. it happens

  2982. bit by bit

  2983. degree by degree

2984. and if you are waiting around

  2985. for that to happen

2986. if you are not taking up

2987. all that God has offered you

  2988. right

2989. he has given to you

  2990. his word

2991. he has given you Christian fellowship

2992. he has given to you prayer

2993. that you would know it

  2994. believe it

  2995. right

2996. be able to think upon it

  2997. then you are going

  2998. to falter

  2999. in your Christian maturity

  3000. we are meant to

  3001. press into

  3002. the truth

3003. and we are meant to do it

  3004. every single day

3005. we are meant to be

  3006. disciplined

  3007. for godliness

  3008. in conclusion

  3009. Charles Spurgeon quote

3010. that is on your bulletin

  3011. this morning

  3012. he wrote

  3013. the pleasures

  3014. arising from a right

  3015. understanding

  3016. of the divine testimonies

  3017. are of the most

  3018. delightful

  3019. order

  3020. earthly enjoyments

  3021. are utterly contemptible

  3022. if compared with them

  3023. the sweetest joys

  3024. yea

  3025. the sweetest

  3026. of the sweetest

  3027. falls to his portion

  3028. which has God's truth

  3029. to be

  3030. his heritage

3031. so we have great reason

3032. because of who Christ is

3033. and because of who he is

  3034. to us

  3035. our reigning

  3036. king

  3037. to fight for joy

  3038. to be gracious

  3039. towards others

  3040. to turn to God

  3041. with all

  3042. of our concerns

  3043. and to

  3044. dehabituate

  3045. by

  3046. rehabituating

3047. may we be a people

  3048. who lay

  3049. faithless anxiety

  3050. down

  3051. for joyful

  3052. peaceful

  3053. faithfulness

3054. may we be a people

3055. that live in a way

  3056. that the world

  3057. would see

  3058. how very

  3059. reasonable

  3060. we are

  3061. because of how great

  3062. Jesus Christ

  3063. is

  3064. let's pray together

  3065. thank you

  3066. thank you

  3067. thank you
