  1. Good morning. Open up your copy of God's Word to Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2. I want to start off by just kind of extending a real, you know, a genuine welcome to returning college students.

  3. For many of you, this is your first time coming around and maybe your second Sunday.

  4. But we have always had a very special place in our hearts at this church for college students.

  5. And as you look out over the congregation, there's, I would say, a lot of the core members of our church are former college students that were here at some point.

  6. And either got married and stayed here or just chose to find a job around here and to continue investing and being on mission in this area.

  7. So we've always had a very soft spot for your demographic.

  8. And actually, some of the leaders of this church, including myself and Nathan and Wes Shalnut, we met at North Georgia.

  9. And Nathan was actually the second person I ever met in Dahlonega.

  10. Kind of odd that he would never leave me alone like after that.

  11. And still, we're still here.

  12. And so very grateful for how God used those years in my life.

  13. And though the message today is going to be particularly for college students, it is going to go across the board.

  14. No matter where you are, no matter how old you are, no matter what stage of life you're in, it's still going to be very applicable to you.

  15. And it's going to be very easy to draw the application for where you are.

  16. But just because many of you are returning college students, we will have this message in a lot of ways directed at you.

  17. But as I've said many times, college is a crossroads for many of you.

  18. It's the first time a lot of you have been away from home.

  19. It's the first time you're forming your opinions on what you actually believe, what life's about,

  20. and a lot of big decisions being made about your job, your career, your relationship situation.

  21. So many big changes that you're undergoing.

  22. And it's such a pivotal time for professing Christians to either fall away a lot of the time from the faith

  23. or really grow deeper in their faith.

  24. That's typically what you see.

  25. You don't see many middle ground people in that area.

  26. It's a great time to grow spiritually.

  27. And so that in mind, I just want to lead us in prayer just for a second.

  28. Ask God to help us as we've been doing.

  29. Father, I just want to submit to you that apart from the power of your word being applied by the Holy Spirit,

  30. we have no hope of believing the truth from your word today.

  31. And I pray that you would help us to worship you through our listening to your word,

  32. by treasuring it, loving it, and when we leave here to live it out by grace, Lord, wherever we go.

  33. So just be our teacher now.

  34. Hold our attention.

  35. If we're hungry, let us forget our hunger.

  36. If we're tired, let us forget how tired we are.

  37. And just be able to focus in on what you would have to say to us today.

  38. And help me, Lord, a broken, feeble man who's not even the best public communicator,

  39. just to throw himself at your mercy and to ask you, Lord, to beg you to teach your word to your people today.

  40. In Christ's name, amen.

  41. So the message today, I'm going to be speaking on redeeming the time or making the most use of the time.

  42. And it's a message that's very particularly dear to me.

  43. And a lot of you will know why, but I'll talk about it more later.

  44. But you've turned to Ephesians 5, and usually I would just choose to use a larger text.

  45. But today, I just want to focus in particularly on two verses.

  46. Now, Paul, the Apostle Paul, wrote the letter to the Ephesian church.

  47. And in the first three chapters of it, a lot of that is him spending time telling them who they are in Christ,

  48. telling them about what God has done for them, about how they are the church,

  49. and how God has saved them and made them his own, about salvation.

  50. And then the latter three chapters mostly are about, in light of that reality, here's how you should live.

  51. And that's how we kind of find ourselves in chapter 5.

  52. So he's talking about Christian living now, living out who you are in Christ.

  53. So let's look at chapter 5, verse 15.

  54. Paul says,

  55. Look carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise,

  56. making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

  57. So I want these two verses to kind of burn into your mind.

  58. In our text, we see that God has allotted each one of us time.

  59. Let's focus on that word time to kind of get rolling here.

  60. But the time he's using here is not the word chronos, which means like a clock time or chronology.

  61. It's actually kairos, which means a season or opportunity, a fixed period within a time

  62. when you're giving divine appointments to live for God and to do something for him.

  63. We call those divine appointments a lot of the time.

  64. And they're prearranged, providential times that God gives us to be faithful to him.

  65. They're windows of time that are opened up by God for us to use.

  66. And eventually, those times will also end and close.

  67. You won't have it again, in other words.

  68. And so, there's a lot of examples like that in the Scripture.

  69. Example, in Isaiah 55, 6, God is calling his people to repent of their sins and come to him for forgiveness.

  70. And he's saying, there's a time that I'm going to allow you to do that.

  71. And then it'll stop.

  72. But he says, seek the Lord while he may be found.

  73. Call upon him while his name is near.

  74. That's a kairos.

  75. Also, in Psalm 69, David prays, oh, Lord, my prayer to you is in an acceptable time.

  76. So, there's these little segments, windows, seasons of allotted time that God gives you to do something specific, something special.

  77. And after that's over, it will be lost.

  78. So, I want you to think of the college years as a special kairos in the span of the kairos of your lifetime.

  79. All right?

  80. So, big picture your life, small picture, this season of life that you have in school.

  81. And the next phrase I want you to look at, so we've talked about time, is the phrase, making the best use of the time.

  82. It's another awesome Greek word, but it also implies to redeem or purchase for one's use.

  83. It's also using Colossians 4 or 5, the same word.

  84. But the imagery here is of someone going to the marketplace.

  85. And you catch something, something catches your eye, and it's something very valuable, something that draws your attention.

  86. And you go to it, and the seller tells you that this very valuable item is available for purchase at this price only now, only in this moment.

  87. And it will soon go off the market, and it won't be available for purchase anymore.

  88. So, your choice is either to purchase it immediately or to walk away and lose that opportunity to buy it again.

  89. You can't go back to the marketplace the next day or next week and expect to find the same item for sale.

  90. So, you have to be swift.

  91. You have to act immediately.

  92. You have to take advantage of that.

  93. You have to purchase it, redeem it for your use.

  94. Because when you leave, it won't be there again.

  95. You can't procrastinate.

  96. It's a transaction that you have to move on or walk away from.

  97. That's kind of like what the weight of this phrase, making the best use of the time or redeeming the time means.

  98. So, God is saying to us in this passage, very simply, redeem the best use of the kairos, this season of allotted time that God has given you for eternity.

  99. Redeem it for eternity.

  100. Because it will come and go like the wind, and you won't be able to get it back.

  101. Some of you say, I hate stuff like that.

  102. I hate impulse sayings that I have to just make a quick decision on.

  103. You're very indecisive.

  104. Well, hopefully this message will challenge you to at least be decisive in this way, to make the best use of the time God has given you.

  105. So, just a quick overview of these two verses, and then we'll get through some points.

  106. And when you're used to having points, we'll have points.

  107. But a text overview, okay?

  108. An observation of this text, you'll see a few connections.

  109. Just look at it with me, these two verses.

  110. It says, you've been given a kairos and a lot of season of time by God.

  111. You can choose to either waste it or redeem it.

  112. Redeeming the time, according to our text, means walking carefully in wisdom with eternity in view.

  113. And wasting the time means walking the opposite, carelessly in foolishness with only this present life in view and not eternity.

  114. So, I want you to think about that.

  115. And he throws in there, why?

  116. Because the days are evil.

  117. There is so much happening around you to lull you to sleep, to make you think that this life is all there is to it.

  118. That eternity is not on the horizon.

  119. They're clouding your vision.

  120. And so, with this in mind, we want to take a look at just three things that will help you redeem the time or make the best use of the time that you've been given in this special kairos of your life.

  121. I want you to remember that word.

  122. I'm going to say it a lot today.

  123. Strange words are different and they stand out to you and hopefully you'll remember it.

  124. Instead of just saying, remember the time.

  125. So, kairos.

  126. Number one.

  127. Very simple.

  128. Why you should redeem the time.

  129. Life is short.

  130. Life is short.

  131. You need to beware in some cases, not every case.

  132. I'm not a doomsday-ish type person.

  133. But a lot of universities will seek to daily indoctrinate you to adopt a secular humanistic worldview that basically says,

  134. life is not about God.

  135. Life is about you.

  136. You are the center of the universe.

  137. And therefore, you should live in a way that makes you the center of the universe.

  138. It's about the here and now.

  139. And there's many voices that are presenting that anti-God worldview to you.

  140. And the following system of the world will say that college is a means to help you attain those things.

  141. Self-fulfillment and your own desires.

  142. Education is a means to success.

  143. Education can be a blessing.

  144. All right?

  145. But knowledge itself is useless unless it's used in a way that honors Christ and helps others.

  146. Okay?

  147. So just because you know a lot doesn't mean you're a wise person at all.

  148. Sometimes it makes you a fool.

  149. Scripture actually says, knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

  150. One of my heroes of the faith, Jim Elliott, a missionary who was martyred in Ecuador,

  151. he wrote this while he was in college at Wheaton.

  152. And he was just kind of laying like, why am I doing it in school again?

  153. Sort of thing.

  154. Sort of like, why am I here?

  155. And he actually wrote this really quick.

  156. Just remember this.

  157. Wisdom comes from God, not from PhDs.

  158. PhDs.

  159. Wisdom comes from God and not PhDs.

  160. And they're going to, the system of the world, the fallen world,

  161. is going to seek to make you buy a certain package, a bill of goods.

  162. And it kind of goes something like this.

  163. Now hear me out.

  164. Just follow me.

  165. This is the propaganda that at least Western culture tries to sell a lot,

  166. particularly to young people in college.

  167. It says, you were here in school.

  168. And if you work hard, you get a degree.

  169. That degree will lead to you getting a good job,

  170. which will also give you a good salary, good money, good benefits.

  171. Then you can buy fancy vehicles and a big house

  172. and acquire more toys and possessions.

  173. Get married or don't get married.

  174. Maybe have kids, but if you do, only enough,

  175. that's not going to get in the way of your personal consumption,

  176. personal happiness.

  177. And then eventually you can put your kids through college

  178. and help them accomplish the same goal you just did.

  179. And you eventually quit working,

  180. retire by another house in the mountains or on the lake or on the coast,

  181. and then just spend the latter hours and days and years of your life

  182. just kicking back, doing nothing.

  183. And believe me, the message here is not retirement is wrong or evil.

  184. I kind of hope that I will one day.

  185. But I work out with a man at the gym.

  186. He's in his mid-60s.

  187. He's one of those guys that just puts me to shame.

  188. Like, I'll get off, like, the bench press machine,

  189. and he, in, like, his 65 years old,

  190. will sit down and put on, like, 20 more pounds of me.

  191. And I'm like, come on.

  192. So he's that kind of guy.

  193. But he was a former ranger

  194. and also worked in law enforcement.

  195. And currently he's the Lumpkin County manager.

  196. Stan Kelly is his name.

  197. And I love this man because he's such an example.

  198. And we have many other examples in our church of older people

  199. who are using their retirement well for Jesus.

  200. But he told me, like, Clay, I am scared to death

  201. to join a lot of my friends

  202. who are just settling down, retiring,

  203. throwing all their money into their stuff and their toys

  204. and maintaining that stuff in their toys.

  205. I just don't want to join them.

  206. That's what he told me.

  207. He's like, I want to use my retirement well.

  208. Like, God has given me help at this age in my life

  209. to use for him.

  210. And so he's doing two things in his retirement,

  211. or three things.

  212. He's being a faithful member of his church.

  213. He's giving as much as he can to missions

  214. going to unreached peoples.

  215. And he himself is going to unreached peoples.

  216. He's been to Nepal.

  217. He's been, I think, three times to Nepal

  218. in the last few years.

  219. You know, God's given him that help, so he goes.

  220. He's like, I don't want to go out just doing nothing,

  221. you know, when my legs kicked up.

  222. That's how we all should want to finish.

  223. But that's the sell that they'll tell you.

  224. Like, that's the goal.

  225. That's the goal.

  226. Is just get to this point in your life

  227. where you can just enjoy all you've worked for.

  228. And I've seen it.

  229. It's a miserable thing to watch

  230. retired communities just do nothing.

  231. And as the world just is being destroyed

  232. all around them,

  233. when they have such potential to help.

  234. Also in college,

  235. you're kind of built with a certain invincibility.

  236. Most of you are 18 to 25 years old.

  237. Physically, most of you are in the prime of your life.

  238. You feel invincible, young, fast, smart.

  239. Can go all day long and sometimes all night too.

  240. And however, you know, you have to think,

  241. though for most of you,

  242. you have many years ahead of you.

  243. But for some of you, you might not.

  244. The grim reality is that you can't ignore

  245. as that life ends.

  246. And your life will end.

  247. My life will end.

  248. And you can't turn a blind eye to it.

  249. God says,

  250. you are not invincible.

  251. You are not immortal.

  252. You will die.

  253. You will leave this life behind.

  254. And no one can take your place.

  255. Like you're going to pass away.

  256. We are physically going to pass away one day.

  257. And God's word is filled with this imagery.

  258. Let me just read a few to you.

  259. Job 8, 7.

  260. For we are but of yesterday and know nothing.

  261. For our days on earth are a shadow.

  262. Let's write that word down.

  263. Shadow.

  264. Job 14.

  265. Or unto you,

  266. A man who is born of woman

  267. is few of days and full of trouble.

  268. He comes out like a flower and withers.

  269. He flees like a shadow and continues not.

  270. Psalm 103.

  271. As for a man, his days are like grass.

  272. He flourishes like a flower of the field.

  273. For the wind passes over it.

  274. And then is gone.

  275. And his place knows it no more.

  276. There are so many passages that say the same kind of thing.

  277. Your life is a vapor.

  278. Your life is a shadow.

  279. Your life is a breath.

  280. And we tend to be blind to that.

  281. But I'm telling you,

  282. It's a gift if you can grasp that at an early age.

  283. Because you can use all the years ahead to redeem the time.

  284. To know that there will be an end.

  285. Your life had a definite start.

  286. And will have a definite end.

  287. So, don't deceive yourself.

  288. It's foolish for you to deceive yourself into thinking that this present life is all that there is.

  289. And that this life is ultimately about the here and the now.

  290. So, do whatever you can to pursue it and enjoy it.

  291. And if you have to knock people down to do it, do it.

  292. That's the goal of life.

  293. But those are all broken cisterns.

  294. Jeremiah 2.13.

  295. They're things that you want to put your life into and pour your life into.

  296. But they're broken.

  297. And they're going to let you down.

  298. That's where you need to have your hope in the living God.

  299. And Him alone.

  300. The goal of this life is not money, wealth, possessions, toys, clothes, and nice vehicles and big houses.

  301. It's just going to absolutely and totally let you down.

  302. Think about how many hours that you spend watching TV or being on social media.

  303. Which a new statistic says that you almost spend three hours a day on social media.

  304. It's just sad.

  305. Playing video games, going to the gym or library.

  306. There's so many things that aren't bad endeavors.

  307. But if the goal of your life is to pursue those things,

  308. then you're going to be severely disappointed.

  309. I actually saw an article a while back that we've gotten to this point, okay?

  310. Parents are hiring coaches to teach them to help raise their kids

  311. so their kids aren't dependent on iPhones.

  312. That's bad.

  313. It's things like, go take a walk.

  314. Go throw a ball with your kid outside.

  315. It's things like that.

  316. And that's just to the point where we are now.

  317. And we're wasting and squandering the special keros of our life.

  318. We won't get it back.

  319. So that's foolishness.

  320. But wisdom says it is wise for you to recognize and embrace that your time on earth is short.

  321. Don't let that scare you.

  322. Like, see it as like, okay, now I know what life's about.

  323. I have the right perspective.

  324. I can come and see how to make the most of my life.

  325. Because when you're ready to die, that's when you're really ready to live.

  326. I kind of sounded catchy, but I didn't mean it that way.

  327. When you're ready to die, you're truly ready to live.

  328. And wake up and realize that each morning you get out of bed,

  329. God has sustained you while you slept.

  330. And by His grace, He'll help you get through the day.

  331. And He's doing it for the purpose of you knowing Him deeper and you making Him known to other people.

  332. If you're not doing that, you're wasting it.

  333. You're wasting the keros.

  334. And you're doing it and you can do this in all that you do to make Christ known to other people.

  335. And recognize that your time at school is meant not just to help you succeed in life,

  336. not just to consume and enjoy, but it was made to glorify Christ.

  337. Thomas Case, a Puritan who was thrown in prison for preaching the gospel,

  338. this is something he wrote about redeeming the time.

  339. Most men study rather how to pass away their time than to redeem it.

  340. They waste precious hours as if they had no more.

  341. They had more than knew what to do with.

  342. Our season is short and we make it shorter.

  343. How sad a thing it is to hear men complain.

  344. Oh, how shall I pass the time?

  345. I'm bored.

  346. But oh, when trouble comes,

  347. when the sword is at the body,

  348. when the pistol is at the breast,

  349. the knife at the throat,

  350. death at the door,

  351. how precious one of those despised hours be.

  352. Evil days cry with a loud voice in our ears.

  353. Redeem the time.

  354. In life, threatening dangers,

  355. when God threatens, as it were,

  356. we can think of redeeming the time for prayer,

  357. reading, meditation.

  358. We can gather up the very fragments of time

  359. so that nothing can be lost.

  360. Please, God, teach our souls wisdom of redeeming the time.

  361. Yeah, so Gary read earlier from Psalm 39.

  362. Hope that stuck out to you.

  363. But it talks about how asking God to help us know the measure of our days,

  364. help us to realize how transient we are,

  365. that we are but ham breaths.

  366. We heap up wealth and it goes, disappears, right?

  367. So that's the first point is life is short.

  368. And it's tied to the next point.

  369. Eternity is long.

  370. Very catchy, did they?

  371. Life is short.

  372. Number two, eternity is long.

  373. And according to our passage,

  374. it's foolish for you to think that there's not another life

  375. and another world that's waiting for you after this one.

  376. Even for those of us who know Christ,

  377. like, man, we so easily are lured into so many different traps

  378. just to waste time and do nothing.

  379. And I'm not talking about resting.

  380. I'm talking about laziness, apathy,

  381. disengagement, those sort of things.

  382. So we can grow very nearsighted because the days are evil.

  383. It says in verse 16,

  384. it's trying to get us to forget about eternity.

  385. Remember, life is about the here and now.

  386. And we need frequent reminders to wake up.

  387. That's why we need each other in the church

  388. to help remind ourselves,

  389. look, this life is going to come and go.

  390. So hold your hand in Ephesians 5,

  391. but flip to 1 Corinthians 3 really quick.

  392. 1 Corinthians 3.

  393. This is one of those passages

  394. that kind of can sober us a little bit.

  395. 1 Corinthians 3, verse 12.

    1 Corinthians 3:12

  396. And so the Scripture speaks of a judgment

  397. one day for unbelievers

  398. where they'll be judged basically

  399. if they are in Christ or not.

  400. We will not really face that judgment.

  401. But it is very clear that even as the people of God,

  402. even those who are found in Christ

  403. will face another type of judgment

  404. where we'll give an account

  405. for how we've been faithful,

  406. for our obedience,

  407. things that we have done

  408. to honor the Lord in this life,

  409. which is kind of scary.

  410. 1 Corinthians 3, verse 12.

    1 Corinthians 3:12

  411. Paul says,

  412. Now if anyone builds on the foundation

  413. with gold, silver, precious stones,

  414. wood, hay, straw,

  415. each one's work will become manifest

  416. for the day, capital D,

  417. will disclose it

  418. because it will be revealed by fire.

  419. And the fire will test

  420. what sort of work each one has done.

  421. If the work that anyone has built

  422. on the foundation survives,

  423. he will receive a reward.

  424. If anyone's work is burned up,

  425. he will suffer loss,

  426. though he himself will be saved,

  427. but only as through fire.

  428. You ever heard someone say,

  429. Man, I just want to get into heaven.

  430. That's not really like the right attitude at all.

  431. Be concerned.

  432. But look at that last part.

  433. It's like,

  434. yeah, some people will be saved.

  435. Some people will enter into God's presence,

  436. but they're going to suffer loss.

  437. I don't know what that means.

  438. But maybe holy regret,

  439. as one writer called it,

  440. wishing that you had spent

  441. more focus on redeeming the time

  442. than wasting the time.

  443. Wishing like I wish

  444. I had taken care of

  445. all these opportunities that I had

  446. instead of squandering them.

  447. But,

  448. the work that we do

  449. that will last for eternity

  450. will be rewarded,

  451. and those that have squandered it

  452. will lose it.

  453. So,

  454. one of those very

  455. sobering texts.

  456. That is foolish to think

  457. that there's not eternity

  458. on the horizon,

  459. but it's wisdom,

  460. it is wisdom

  461. for us to realize

  462. that this life is going somewhere.

  463. Like,

  464. after we breathe our last,

  465. we will step into another world.

  466. God has set that beginning

  467. and the end of this time

  468. on earth.

  469. So,

  470. we need to maximize

  471. the kairos,

  472. maximize the kairos.

  473. I'll read this to you really quick.

  474. 2 Corinthians 4.

  475. One of my favorite passages,

  476. I guess,

  477. I kind of used

  478. the eternal type language.

  479. 2 Corinthians 4,

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  480. verse 16 says,

  481. So we do not lose heart,

  482. though our outer self

  483. is wasting away.

  484. Our inner self

  485. is being renewed

  486. day by day.

  487. For this light

  488. and momentary affliction

  489. is preparing for us

  490. an eternal weight

  491. of glory

  492. beyond all comparison.

  493. As we look not

  494. to the things

  495. that are seen,

  496. but to the things

  497. that are unseen.

  498. For the things

  499. that are seen

  500. are transient.

  501. For the things

  502. that are unseen

  503. are eternal.

  504. Ah,

  505. let that,

  506. hmm,

  507. we've got to put

  508. our minds

  509. and our hearts

  510. in this type of language.

  511. What you see

  512. is not going to be here

  513. one day.

  514. What is unseen

  515. is going to be eternal.

  516. This outer self

  517. is wasting away.

  518. It doesn't matter.

  519. I don't care

  520. if you go to the gym

  521. five days a week.

  522. I don't care

  523. how good you look now.

  524. I go to CrossFit.

  525. Well,

  526. you can cross

  527. whatever you want to cross.

  528. You're going to die one day.

  529. You're not going to look

  530. that way forever.

  531. We need reminders

  532. this life is transient

  533. and the eternal

  534. weight of glory

  535. is before us.

  536. Likewise,

  537. Paul said in Colossians,

  538. seek the things

  539. that are above,

  540. not the things

  541. that are on the earth.

  542. So,

  543. life is short,

  544. eternity is long,

  545. and then thirdly,

  546. in light of those two things,

  547. thirdly,

  548. redeem the time.

  549. Make the best use

  550. of the time,

  551. the best use

  552. of the kairos,

  553. the sacred time

  554. that God has given you.

  555. Remember that.

  556. That when you wake up

  557. every day,

  558. remember,

  559. there's not a moment

  560. to spare.

  561. there should be freedom,

  562. but there should be urgency.

  563. Okay?

  564. I'm not saying

  565. beat yourself up

  566. every day

  567. to do a certain thing,

  568. but there should be

  569. a weight on you

  570. that just says,

  571. I've been given

  572. another day

  573. to live

  574. for Christ.

  575. Christ.

  576. And so,

  577. everything that's given

  578. to you,

  579. the money and possessions

  580. that you have

  581. are given to you,

  582. young people

  583. and older,

  584. really,

  585. are given to you

  586. so you can use them

  587. in such a way

  588. that people can look

  589. at that and say,

  590. those things

  591. aren't that person's treasure.

  592. Christ is.

  593. Relationships,

  594. family,

  595. friends,

  596. significant others

  597. are given to you

  598. so that you can

  599. live with them

  600. in such a way

  601. that shows that

  602. Christ is your treasure,

  603. but they are not

  604. your treasure.

  605. So many things,

  606. so many opportunities

  607. that you'll never

  608. get replaced

  609. or replicated again.

  610. So,

  611. seize that moment.

  612. This is so important

  613. to me because

  614. most,

  615. many of you know this,

  616. but I was born

  617. with a lung disease

  618. called cystic fibrosis

  619. in the early 80s.

  620. And,

  621. at the time,

  622. the age expectancy

  623. was 18

  624. when I was born.

  625. And,

  626. no cure,

  627. only treatments

  628. for that.

  629. And so,

  630. I lived a pretty

  631. normal life

  632. a lot of the time

  633. and until I got up

  634. to my latter teens,

  635. the disease

  636. really started

  637. to hit me.

  638. But I don't

  639. begrudge God

  640. because

  641. He used that

  642. to humble me

  643. and show me

  644. that I was not

  645. immortal.

  646. That I was not

  647. the awesome

  648. dude I thought

  649. I was.

  650. My dreams

  651. were I wanted

  652. to be,

  653. I wanted to play

  654. sports in college

  655. and I wanted

  656. to go into

  657. the military.

  658. I wanted to be

  659. an elite soldier

  660. or actually

  661. the Marine Corps

  662. because that's

  663. my family.

  664. So,

  665. that's what I wanted

  666. to do.

  667. That's like the

  668. path I carved

  669. for myself.

  670. And God

  671. just shut

  672. it down.

  673. I remember

  674. when 9-11

  675. came around,

  676. I had several

  677. really good friends

  678. go and join

  679. the military

  680. and I remember

  681. just sort of

  682. feeling

  683. left behind.

  684. But,

  685. that was early

  686. in my

  687. walk with Christ

  688. and

  689. it's as if

  690. God was saying,

  691. you're going to

  692. stay here

  693. and you're going to

  694. fight a different

  695. kind of fight.

  696. and in my

  697. flesh just

  698. didn't like that

  699. but my spirit

  700. rejoiced.

  701. And I was really

  702. kind of bummed

  703. that all my

  704. dreams had been

  705. kind of shot

  706. down but also

  707. just aware that

  708. God was doing

  709. something,

  710. I just didn't

  711. know what.

  712. And one of my

  713. best friends

  714. who was,

  715. his name was

  716. Dustin Scoggins,

  717. he showed up

  718. one day at my

  719. house,

  720. well never mind,

  721. he got a DUI

  722. before he was a

  723. Christian so he

  724. couldn't drive

  725. so I was always

  726. picking him up.

  727. But I picked

  728. him up and

  729. he threw this

  730. hat at me and

  731. he had this

  732. made but it

  733. basically says

  734. on it the

  735. Lord's Marine

  736. Corps.

  737. Like this is

  738. the battle

  739. you're going to

  740. fight.

  741. You're not

  742. going to get

  743. engaged in all

  744. this other

  745. stuff.

  746. Forget about

  747. it.

  748. And ever

  749. since then I've

  750. seen it that

  751. way even though

  752. at times I

  753. still struggle to

  754. believe.

  755. And when I

  756. got to Cali

  757. and I came up

  758. here to North

  759. Georgia in

  760. Dahlonega,

  761. this was a book

  762. that I read

  763. called Don't

  764. Waste Your

  765. Life.

  766. By John

  767. Piper.

  768. So you

  769. should pick up

  770. this book

  771. because it's

  772. about what we're

  773. talking about.

  774. How do you

  775. make the most

  776. of the time?

  777. How do you

  778. redeem the

  779. time and not

  780. waste it?

  781. So these

  782. kind of thoughts

  783. were heavy on

  784. my mind in

  785. college.

  786. I was very

  787. sick.

  788. I had to go

  789. in for

  790. treatments pretty

  791. often.

  792. Somehow I

  793. managed to

  794. graduate.

  795. I remember

  796. being in the

  797. hospital and my

  798. doctor gave me a

  799. pass to go and

  800. graduate and come

  801. back to the

  802. hospital.

  803. So I

  804. walked with all

  805. my crazy

  806. friends.

  807. And

  808. eventually, as

  809. most of you

  810. know, I had to

  811. get a lung

  812. transplant in

  813. 2008.

  814. And somehow I

  815. survived that.

  816. The surgeon said

  817. that it was the

  818. worst pair of

  819. lungs he ever

  820. had seen.

  821. he had done a

  822. lot of

  823. transplants.

  824. And I also

  825. got severely

  826. sick, like

  827. bad infection

  828. within the first

  829. six months of my

  830. transplant.

  831. It nearly killed

  832. me.

  833. And I don't

  834. have any memory

  835. for a month.

  836. And I was on

  837. life support.

  838. And then after

  839. that I was just

  840. sort of drug out

  841. of my mind and

  842. don't remember

  843. anything.

  844. But at one

  845. point I was in

  846. the CICU at

  847. UAB Hospital in

  848. Birmingham.

  849. And I was in

  850. there with two

  851. other patients.

  852. One girl and

  853. one guy.

  854. Around my age.

  855. One was waiting

  856. for a lung

  857. transplant.

  858. And one had

  859. CF and had

  860. received the

  861. transplant but

  862. was not doing

  863. well at all.

  864. kind of the

  865. same thing.

  866. And so for

  867. about a week

  868. we just kind of

  869. fought to make

  870. it through.

  871. My parents met

  872. their parents and

  873. hung out with

  874. their parents and

  875. talked to their

  876. parents.

  877. My parents tried

  878. to share the

  879. hope they had in

  880. Christ with those

  881. other parents.

  882. And for some

  883. reason they both

  884. died and I'm

  885. still standing

  886. here.

  887. No control

  888. over that.

  889. But that

  890. weighs on me.

  891. why?

  892. So God

  893. chose to

  894. extend my

  895. life through

  896. my transplant

  897. and now I

  898. feel that

  899. weight to

  900. redeem the

  901. time.

  902. In the first

  903. year of my

  904. marriage just a

  905. few years ago

  906. I got really

  907. sick again and

  908. had to go to

  909. the hospital in

  910. Birmingham and

  911. my wife Kathleen

  912. was with me and

  913. we walked down

  914. the hospital

  915. ward.

  916. the lung

  917. transplant unit

  918. kind of where I

  919. was for so

  920. long.

  921. And

  922. looked in the

  923. rooms and saw

  924. people on life

  925. support.

  926. Seeing people

  927. that had just

  928. received transplants.

  929. There's tubes

  930. coming out of them

  931. just laying there

  932. in the bed.

  933. And it just

  934. broke me.

  935. I think that was

  936. the last time I

  937. actually just

  938. bawled my eyes

  939. out because I

  940. just remembered

  941. Lord.

  942. That could still

  943. be me.

  944. Why did I

  945. make it out of

  946. there like

  947. Lord help me

  948. not to fall

  949. asleep.

  950. Let me not

  951. waste this

  952. life.

  953. And even

  954. though God

  955. has chosen to

  956. paint this to

  957. me in a very

  958. vivid way it's

  959. no less true

  960. for you.

  961. Like every day

  962. is a gift from

  963. the Lord to

  964. redeem for

  965. his use.

  966. And I know

  967. that the Lord

  968. loves me and

  969. that I'm accepted

  970. fully in Christ

  971. that I can't

  972. earn his love

  973. no matter what

  974. I've done.

  975. But I still

  976. want to

  977. redeem the time.

  978. Eternity weighs

  979. heavy on my

  980. mind.

  981. So look back

  982. at Ephesians

  983. 5.

  984. Ephesians 5

    Ephesians 5:15

  985. verse 15

  986. and 16

  987. again.

  988. Look carefully

  989. then how you

  990. walk not as

  991. unwise but as

  992. wise.

  993. making the

  994. best use of

  995. the time

  996. because the

  997. days are

  998. evil.

  999. So I

  1000. want to give

  1001. you just

  1002. three things

  1003. to help you

  1004. redeem the

  1005. time.

  1006. So I'm in

  1007. college.

  1008. Give me some

  1009. things to hold

  1010. on to.

  1011. Give me some

  1012. things to focus

  1013. on to help

  1014. me redeem the

  1015. time.

  1016. This is some

  1017. application but

  1018. one is grow

  1019. in your

  1020. relationship

  1021. with Christ.

  1022. Christ.

  1023. Again for

  1024. many of you

  1025. you've never

  1026. really taken

  1027. your faith

  1028. seriously until

  1029. now.

  1030. Even though

  1031. you have

  1032. great

  1033. responsibilities

  1034. that feel

  1035. very weighty

  1036. to you

  1037. that probably

  1038. won't be as

  1039. weighty as

  1040. when you

  1041. graduate one

  1042. day and

  1043. have a

  1044. full time

  1045. job and

  1046. maybe have

  1047. children.

  1048. There are

  1049. moments of

  1050. time that

  1051. you'll never

  1052. get back to

  1053. study God's

  1054. word to

  1055. dive deep

  1056. into the

  1057. scriptures and

  1058. meditate on

  1059. them day and

  1060. night.

  1061. to realize

  1062. that the

  1063. Bible is

  1064. God's

  1065. written

  1066. revelation of

  1067. himself to

  1068. reveal himself

  1069. to you.

  1070. So much

  1071. time to

  1072. pray and

  1073. to sit at

  1074. the feet of

  1075. Jesus.

  1076. And you can

  1077. do this in

  1078. your time in

  1079. college.

  1080. You can do

  1081. it.

  1082. You can

  1083. redeem that

  1084. time to

  1085. grow close

  1086. to Christ.

  1087. Don't waste

  1088. it.

  1089. Ephesians 5

  1090. 17 to read

  1091. on this one

  1092. word.

  1093. It says,

  1094. don't be

  1095. foolish,

  1096. but understand

  1097. what the

  1098. will of

  1099. the Lord

  1100. is.

  1101. Okay.

  1102. Well, I

  1103. thought the

  1104. will of

  1105. God was

  1106. this like

  1107. mystical

  1108. thing I

  1109. was supposed

  1110. to like

  1111. find and

  1112. chase.

  1113. Like, no,

  1114. don't be

  1115. foolish.

  1116. Know what

  1117. the will

  1118. of the

  1119. Lord is.

  1120. It's here.

  1121. If you

  1122. want to know

  1123. what's on

  1124. God's mind,

  1125. it's right

  1126. here.

  1127. What he

  1128. loves, what

  1129. he hates,

  1130. what he

  1131. believes about

  1132. you, what

  1133. he calls

  1134. you to,

  1135. it's all

  1136. in here.

  1137. It's not

  1138. out here.

  1139. Don't be

  1140. foolish, but

  1141. understand what

  1142. the will of

  1143. the Lord

  1144. is.

  1145. What's

  1146. not a word

  1147. for foolish?

  1148. This kind

  1149. of gets

  1150. me stupid.

  1151. Don't be

  1152. stupid.

  1153. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 9:23

  1154. 9, verse

  1155. 23, let me

  1156. read this

  1157. to you.

  1158. Thus

  1159. says the

  1160. Lord, let

  1161. not the

  1162. wise man

  1163. boast in

  1164. his wisdom.

  1165. Let not

  1166. the mighty

  1167. man boast

  1168. in his

  1169. might.

  1170. Let not

  1171. the rich

  1172. man boast

  1173. in his

  1174. riches.

  1175. So, that's

  1176. what they're

  1177. going to

  1178. preach to

  1179. you.

  1180. Get some

  1181. money, get

  1182. some

  1183. wisdom, get

  1184. some riches,

  1185. be strong.

  1186. Don't boast

  1187. in that

  1188. stuff.

  1189. He says

  1190. in verse

  1191. 24, but

  1192. let him

  1193. who boasts

  1194. boast in

  1195. this, that

  1196. he understands

  1197. and knows

  1198. me, that

  1199. I am the

  1200. Lord who

  1201. practices

  1202. steadfast

  1203. love, justice

  1204. and righteousness

  1205. in the earth.

  1206. For these

  1207. things I

  1208. delight, declares

  1209. the Lord, and

  1210. grow in your

  1211. walk with

  1212. Jesus while

  1213. you're in

  1214. school.

  1215. And these

  1216. other two

  1217. things actually

  1218. aids you in

  1219. that one

  1220. pursuit.

  1221. Secondly, grow

  1222. in your

  1223. relationship with

  1224. God's people.

  1225. Over the

  1226. years, we've

  1227. noticed a

  1228. huge pattern,

  1229. a difference

  1230. between students

  1231. who just kind of

  1232. chill out on

  1233. campus, hang

  1234. out with other

  1235. students, maybe

  1236. they're a part of

  1237. a campus ministry,

  1238. maybe not, that

  1239. side, and those

  1240. who actually say,

  1241. hey, you know

  1242. what, I actually

  1243. belong to the

  1244. church right

  1245. now, so I'm

  1246. going to throw

  1247. myself into the

  1248. body of Christ,

  1249. the local

  1250. church, and

  1251. they grow

  1252. light years ahead

  1253. of those who

  1254. just shot on

  1255. campus.

  1256. It's just a

  1257. fact.

  1258. It just is.

  1259. That's how God

  1260. designed it.

  1261. The church is the

  1262. family of God, it's

  1263. his people, it's the

  1264. bride of Christ.

  1265. And as I said

  1266. before, don't hate

  1267. on Jesus'

  1268. bride because it

  1269. will clean your

  1270. clock if you hate

  1271. his bride.

  1272. He loves his

  1273. bride.

  1274. And when he did

  1275. die for just

  1276. you, but he

  1277. also died for a

  1278. people that he's

  1279. called you to, to

  1280. be with, to live

  1281. with, they're your

  1282. family.

  1283. This is your home,

  1284. not this building,

  1285. but these people,

  1286. they're your

  1287. family.

  1288. And we need each

  1289. other as pilgrims

  1290. walking on this

  1291. earth.

  1292. Join a local

  1293. church.

  1294. Don't do the

  1295. whole dating the

  1296. church like I'm

  1297. going to be at

  1298. Christ's family this

  1299. Sunday, then go to

  1300. Brownsbridge next

  1301. Sunday, then

  1302. Passion City, then

  1303. next Sunday, and

  1304. then maybe try

  1305. Christ's family

  1306. again.

  1307. Just don't do

  1308. it.

  1309. Just find

  1310. somewhere that

  1311. loves the gospel,

  1312. that loves the

  1313. scripture, that

  1314. loves Jesus Christ

  1315. and loves the

  1316. mission of Christ,

  1317. and stay there and

  1318. pour your life out

  1319. there.

  1320. Young women, you

  1321. need older women to

  1322. learn how to live

  1323. from.

  1324. Like older women

  1325. to say, hey, come

  1326. and walk with me.

  1327. Come and let me

  1328. show you how to

  1329. follow Jesus.

  1330. Guys, you need the

  1331. same thing.

  1332. You need older men

  1333. in your life.

  1334. You're not going to

  1335. get that on campus.

  1336. There are some

  1337. guys and girls

  1338. too, finding their

  1339. lives in so many

  1340. things, and what

  1341. they need is the

  1342. gospel and the

  1343. church can help

  1344. you in that pursuit

  1345. of reaching those

  1346. people.

  1347. We need older

  1348. people to be

  1349. around.

  1350. So campus

  1351. ministries are good.

  1352. I was a part of

  1353. campus outreach.

1354. I was on staff with

  1355. them for three years.

  1356. Good ministries.

  1357. They're actually not

  1358. in North Georgia

  1359. anymore, and I say

  1360. that with a heavy

  1361. heart.

  1362. But as good as

  1363. campus ministries are,

1364. they are not to take

  1365. the place of the

  1366. local body.

  1367. And any campus

  1368. ministry worth anything

  1369. will tell you that.

  1370. No, no, no.

  1371. We're not it.

  1372. Go.

  1373. Be part of the

  1374. body.

  1375. Go.

  1376. Go.

  1377. So join a local

  1378. church, a healthy,

  1379. good local church.

1380. We can tell you a lot

1381. of them not to go to.

  1382. There's a few that we

  1383. would recommend.

  1384. You're welcome to stay

  1385. here.

  1386. But there are other

  1387. ones as well.

  1388. All right.

  1389. That's the second

  1390. thing.

  1391. Lastly, grow in your

  1392. obedience to Christ's

  1393. mission.

  1394. Grow in your obedience

  1395. to Christ's mission.

1396. For those of you that

1397. are in school, most of

1398. you will never have the

  1399. relational influence you

  1400. have right now ever

  1401. again.

  1402. The special kairos you'll

  1403. never get back.

  1404. A lot of you.

  1405. You're surrounded by

  1406. people on a daily

1407. basis that need to see

  1408. Christ, that need to

  1409. hear the gospel.

  1410. Colossians 4, verse 5,

    Colossians 4:5

  1411. the same kind of

  1412. phrase.

  1413. Walk in wisdom toward

  1414. outsiders, making the

1415. best use of the time.

1416. Open your eyes to the

1417. lost people that are all

  1418. around you.

1419. It's that young guy who

1420. never leaves his room and

1421. just plays video games all

1422. day and night because he's

  1423. depressed and he doesn't

1424. want to step out of his

1425. dorm room to face the

  1426. world.

  1427. It's that girl.

1428. Some of you know her.

1429. She won't go out unless

1430. she spends an hour getting

  1431. ready first to make

  1432. herself look beautiful

  1433. because she's afraid of

  1434. being judged and torn

  1435. apart by people just

1436. looking at her all day

  1437. long.

  1438. It's that unpopular

1439. nobody that sits alone in

  1440. the chow hall.

1441. It's that person trying to

1442. find their value in the

1443. dating world or the sex

1444. world or their party life.

1445. They're trying so hard and

  1446. they're being destroyed

  1447. because of it.

1448. Some of you know them.

  1449. It's that girl killing

1450. herself to look good at the

1451. gym because she's afraid of

1452. how people are going to

1453. evaluate her when she steps

  1454. out in public.

  1455. Look, it's that person

1456. that always wants to speak

1457. up in class and that may

1458. annoy you at times but

  1459. they're trying to say I'm

  1460. smart.

1461. I have something to offer.

  1462. Listen to me.

  1463. They're all around you.

1464. Just open your eyes and pray

1465. that God gives you just eyes

  1466. to see those people.

  1467. They need you.

1468. They need you to bear

1469. witness of Christ and the

1470. freedom that you live in.

1471. They need to see that.

  1472. Don't just say I'm going to

  1473. wait for the summertime.

1474. I'm going to do missions

  1475. overseas this summer.

  1476. That's when I evangelize.

1477. If you're not willing to

1478. walk across the hall to talk

1479. to Christ, about Christ to

  1480. someone, please don't go

  1481. overseas this summer.

  1482. The most faithful

  1483. missionaries are people

  1484. who are already being

  1485. faithful right here,

  1486. right now.

  1487. Jim Elliott, once again,

1488. when he was in college,

  1489. he wrote this.

1490. Father, make me a crisis

  1491. man.

  1492. Bring those I contact

  1493. to decision.

1494. Let me not be a mile

1495. post on a single road.

1496. Make me a fork that men

1497. must turn one way or

  1498. another on facing Christ

  1499. in me.

  1500. And on your bulletin,

  1501. there's a quote.

  1502. Jonathan Edwards wrote a

1503. lot about making the most

  1504. use of his time.

1505. This is one thing he said

  1506. on your bulletin,

1507. on top of your bulletin.

  1508. Time is short,

1509. and the work which we have

1510. to do in it is so great

1511. that we have none of it

  1512. to spare.

1513. So I want to end with this.

1514. I want you to rest in Christ.

  1515. If you're feeling like,

  1516. man, I feel overwhelmed

  1517. by this,

1518. you should to some degree.

1519. But as you study the Gospels,

1520. you will see that Jesus

  1521. himself was very aware,

1522. very tuned in to the

1523. kairos that God had given him.

  1524. He talked about,

  1525. and John,

1526. but I looked at John,

  1527. John 2, verse 4,

    John 2:4

1528. my hour has not yet come.

1529. The hour where he was to be

  1530. arrested and tried

  1531. and crucified

  1532. and resurrected,

  1533. that's the time he's talking

  1534. about,

  1535. the culmination,

1536. the climax of his life.

1537. My hour has not yet come,

  1538. John 2, verse 4.

    John 2:4

1539. Later on in chapter 7,

  1540. he says,

1541. my hour is not yet here.

  1542. Also in John 7,

  1543. it says,

1544. his hour had not yet come.

  1545. John 12,

  1546. Father,

1547. save me from this hour,

  1548. but for this purpose

1549. I came into the world.

  1550. John 17,

  1551. Father,

  1552. here it is,

  1553. the hour has come.

  1554. The hour has come.

  1555. Glorify your Son,

1556. that the Son may glorify you.

  1557. And then John 19,

    John 19:30

  1558. verse 30,

  1559. it is finished.

  1560. So the good news

  1561. is even though,

  1562. even though as believers,

  1563. you and I both

  1564. have squandered

  1565. missed opportunities,

  1566. we have wasted time.

  1567. The good news is

  1568. that Christ never did.

  1569. And that he fulfilled

  1570. perfectly all the time

1571. the Father had given him

  1572. to the very end.

  1573. And he brought us

  1574. eternal salvation.

  1575. So,

1576. you never can earn that

  1577. no matter how faithful

1578. you are of your time.

  1579. So remember this,

  1580. as you strive

  1581. to redeem the time,

  1582. know that you are

  1583. not striving

  1584. to enter

  1585. the love of Christ,

  1586. but you're striving

  1587. in the midst

1588. of the love of Christ.

  1589. But he's already

  1590. secured for you

  1591. through what he did,

  1592. his finished work.

  1593. Yet,

  1594. true faith in you

  1595. will want

  1596. to redeem the time.

  1597. It'll be a fighter.

  1598. It'll say,

  1599. I've got to make

1600. the most of this opportunity.

  1601. So don't ignore that.

  1602. Run after it.

  1603. Think about it.

1604. And rest in that reality

  1605. that you can be

  1606. in the finished work

  1607. of Christ.

1608. Let's pray to that end.

  1609. I want to close

1610. by looking at Psalm 90.

  1611. Just go ahead

  1612. and turn there

1613. and we'll pray from here.

  1614. Psalm 90.

  1615. This is a psalm

  1616. that Moses wrote.

  1617. Psalm 90.

  1618. Look at verse 9.

1619. This kind of sums up

  1620. well our message today.

  1621. For all our days

  1622. pass away

  1623. under your wrath.

  1624. We bring our years

  1625. to an end

  1626. like a sigh.

1627. The years of our life

  1628. are 70

  1629. or even

  1630. by reason of strength

  1631. 80.

  1632. Yet their span

  1633. is but toil

  1634. and trouble.

  1635. They are soon gone

  1636. and we fly away.

  1637. Who considers

  1638. the power

  1639. of your anger

  1640. and your wrath

  1641. according to the fear

  1642. of you.

1643. So here it is guys.

  1644. So teach us

  1645. to number our days

  1646. that we may get

  1647. a heart

  1648. of wisdom.

  1649. Number our days.
