  1. Our text for this morning is Hebrews chapter 9 verses 1 through 14.

    Hebrews 9:1–14

  2. Before I lead us in reading it, I want to remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us.

  3. It was written for His glory and our good.

  4. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  5. Hebrews chapter 9 verse 1 and following.

    Hebrews 9:1

  6. Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.

  7. For a tent was prepared, the first section in which were the lampstands and the table and the bread of presence.

  8. It is called the holy place.

  9. Behind the second curtain was a second section called the most holy place,

  10. having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold,

  11. in which was a golden urn holding the manna and Aaron's staff that budded and the tablets of the covenant.

  12. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat.

  13. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

  14. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section,

  15. performing their ritual duties.

  16. But into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood,

  17. which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.

  18. By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened

  19. as long as the first section is still standing, which is symbolic for the present age.

  20. According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,

  21. but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

  22. But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come,

  23. then through the greater and more perfect tent, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation,

  24. He entered once for all into the holy places,

  25. not by means of the blood of goats and of calves, but by means of His own blood,

  26. thus securing an eternal redemption.

  27. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer

  28. sanctify for the purification of the flesh,

  29. how much more will the blood of Christ,

  30. who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God,

  31. purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

  32. This morning's text is all about the penal substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ.

  33. This doctrine, though rarely mentioned in these terms,

  34. is considered weekly in our gatherings,

  35. and I hope that it's treasured and pondered by each of you daily.

  36. It is the very core of the Christian faith.

  37. We have no justification, no redemption, no adoption,

  38. no sanctification, no future glorification

  39. without the penal substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ.

  40. Penal substitutionary atonement is the doctrine that states

  41. that when Jesus died on the cross,

  42. He took the wrath of God,

  43. the penalty, penal of God,

  44. due our sin,

  45. was ours to bear because of our sin,

  46. thus the substitutionary,

  47. He died in our place,

  48. and in so doing,

  49. He appeased the wrath of God for our sin.

  50. The atonement.

  51. Penal substitutionary atonement.

  52. This is central truth.

  53. Everything else Christians believe

  54. falls apart without it.

  55. And you remember,

  56. if you've been with us,

  57. that this little church,

  58. this little Hebrew church,

  59. had been suffering for a belief in this Christ.

  60. They had been tempted to go back to Judaism.

  61. Back to the Aaronic priesthood

  62. and all that it included.

  63. All of its rites and rituals.

  64. They were tempted to think,

  65. isn't that an acceptable worship of God?

  66. Isn't it sufficient for us?

  67. And the author of Hebrews

  68. is altogether and in many ways saying,

  69. no, absolutely not.

  70. And here he brings it kind of to a head,

  71. as he says.

  72. This central theme.

  73. As he states this reality

  74. that Christ died in our stead.

  75. I suppose this is why Paul states

  76. in 1 Corinthians 2,

  77. the first two verses.

  78. He says,

  79. And when I came to you, brothers,

  80. did not come proclaiming to you

  81. the testimony of God

  82. with lofty speech or wisdom.

  83. For I decided to know nothing among you

  84. except Jesus Christ

  85. and Him crucified.

  86. Now,

  87. at a first reading of 1 Corinthians 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:1

  88. verses 1 and 2,

  89. you'd think,

  90. Paul, you didn't teach them anything else?

  91. Doesn't the resurrection

  92. have great bearing on their faith?

  93. Absolutely, it does.

  94. I believe what Paul is trying to say

  95. is that I came and I taught you

  96. the central doctrine

  97. and the things that flow out of it.

  98. But simply,

  99. the central doctrine.

  100. Penal substitutionary atonement.

  101. Christ died in our place.

  102. Charles Spurgeon once said,

  103. and this quotation is on your bulletin,

  104. I believe that if I should preach to you

  105. the atonement of our Lord Jesus

  106. and nothing else,

  107. twice every Sabbath day,

  108. my ministry would not be unprofitable.

  109. And he went on to say,

  110. perhaps it might be more profitable

  111. than it is.

  112. Central doctrine.

  113. The death of Christ

  114. on our behalf.

  115. And so I want to consider that a bit this morning

  116. as we look at these first 14 verses.

  117. But to get there,

  118. to consider the adequacy

  119. of what Christ accomplished on the cross,

  120. we need to first consider

  121. the inadequacy of the Old Covenant.

  122. We've talked about this a bit

  123. over the past weeks.

  124. Keep in mind that this was a letter written

  125. and it would have been read all together,

  126. all at one time.

  127. And we've broken it up into very small,

  128. digestible pieces.

  129. I hope that the theme

  130. of the inadequacy of the Old Covenant

  131. is not growing tired to you

  132. because it's helping us to understand

  133. in greater measure,

  134. greater clarity,

  135. the adequacy of the New Covenant.

  136. And so that's our simple outline

  137. this morning for the text.

  138. Number one,

  139. the inadequacy of the Old Covenant.

  140. And number two,

  141. the adequacy of the New Covenant.

  142. But before we get into these two points,

  143. I think we need to talk a little bit

  144. about the tabernacle

  145. and tabernacle worship.

  146. The last part of verse 5,

  147. the author of Hebrews says,

  148. of these things,

  149. we cannot now speak in detail.

  150. Why not?

  151. He had somewhere he was going

  152. with this letter.

  153. He's bringing them along to a point

  154. and they already knew the details.

  155. These are Hellenistic Jews,

  156. Greek-speaking Jews.

  157. They have been part of this practice,

  158. this type of worship.

  159. They were most likely much more familiar

  160. with their Old Testament,

  161. their Scripture of the day,

  162. than we are today.

  163. And so I think,

  164. and we don't have a lot more time,

  165. but I think this morning

  166. it would be good for us

  167. to take a few moments

  168. to consider the tabernacle

  169. and tabernacle worship.

  170. In order to do so,

  171. Kent Hughes,

  172. who wrote a wonderful commentary

  173. on the book of Hebrews,

  174. I've been using it much,

  175. wrote some really nice,

  176. succinct summaries to this end.

  177. And I'm just going to read those to you.

  178. I think his words will serve you

  179. better this morning than mine.

  180. So I want to read just a bit to you

  181. about first the tabernacle.

  182. He writes,

  183. Israel's tabernacle

  184. was a portable tent shrine

  185. that was always situated

  186. at the geographical heart of Israel,

  187. with all the tribes camped around it

  188. in designated orderly formation.

  189. Approaching the tabernacle,

  190. one first would see

  191. the white linen walls

  192. of the court of the tabernacle,

  193. which formed an enclosure

  194. 150 feet long

  195. and 75 feet wide.

  196. The uniform whiteness

  197. of the enclosure's walls

  198. broadcast the holiness

  199. of its function.

  200. When a worshiper entered the courtyard,

  201. he was immediately in front

  202. of the altar of burnt offering,

  203. a large bronze altar

  204. with a horn at each

  205. of its four corners

  206. to which offerings could be tied.

  207. This was as far as the layman

  208. could come.

  209. And it is the place

  210. where he laid his hands

  211. on the head of the sin offering.

  212. Behind the altar

  213. and a little to the right

  214. stood the bronze laver,

  215. which is like a big wash basin

  216. with spouts that water

  217. would come out of.

  218. A wash basin

  219. for the exclusive use

  220. of the priests,

  221. which, if neglected,

  222. imperiled their lives.

  223. They had to be purified

  224. upon coming in.

  225. Directly behind the laver

  226. was the tabernacle,

  227. a flat-roofed oblong tent

  228. 15 feet in height and width

  229. and 45 feet long.

  230. It was covered with three layers.

  231. The first consisted

  232. of gorgeous woven tapestries

  233. of blue, purple,

  234. and scarlet yarns and linen,

  235. which was then overlaid

  236. with two layers of animal skins.

  237. Inside, the tabernacle

  238. was divided into two rooms

  239. by an ornate veil

  240. woven of the same colors

  241. along with gold

  242. and embroidered with cherubim.

  243. The veil was supported

  244. by four golden columns

  245. set on silver bases.

  246. The first outer room

  247. was called the holy place,

  248. and the second inner compartment,

  249. the most holy place,

  250. or holy of holies.

  251. And the author of Hebrews

  252. gives some very brief explanation

  253. of these two rooms,

  254. beginning in verse 1.

  255. Now, even the first covenant

  256. had regulations for worship

  257. and an earthly place

  258. of holiness.

  259. He goes on to explain,

  260. For a tent was prepared,

  261. the first section

  262. in which were the lampstands

  263. and the table

  264. and the bread of the presence

  265. is called the holy place.

  266. I just mentioned

  267. in Kent Hughes' commentary, right?

  268. And there's some things in there,

  269. and we won't get into

  270. the significance

  271. of each of those things

  272. and what they represented

  273. this morning,

  274. but very careful instruction

  275. was given.

  276. All of it aimed at

  277. the people understanding

  278. the great carefulness

  279. by which they were

  280. to approach God.

  281. The weightiness

  282. of their sinfulness

  283. and the way

  284. that it separated them

  285. from God.

  286. Verse 3,

  287. Behind the second curtain

  288. was a second section

  289. called the most holy place.

  290. Having the golden altar

  291. of incense.

  292. And an interesting point here,

  293. the altar of incense,

  294. if you go and read

  295. in, say, the book of Numbers

  296. and you hear that this was

  297. in the holy place,

  298. it was,

  299. but it stood just outside

  300. the passageway

  301. into the most holy place.

  302. It belonged to the holy of holies,

  303. although it sat outside

  304. of the holy of holies.

  305. And the ark of the covenant

  306. covered on all sides

  307. with gold,

  308. in which was a golden urn

  309. holding the manna,

  310. and Aaron's staff

  311. that budded,

  312. and the tablets

  313. of the covenant.

  314. All of this

  315. was contained within.

  316. Verse 5,

  317. Above it were the cherubim

  318. of glory,

  319. right?

  320. Part of the ark,

  321. the statues that were created,

  322. overshadowing

  323. the mercy seat.

  324. And it was in this place

  325. that God tabernacled

  326. with His people.

  327. His visible glory

  328. dwelt inside

  329. of this place.

  330. Both representing

  331. that God dwelt

  332. amongst His people

  333. and

  334. that there were

  335. reasons that they were

  336. separated

  337. from Him.

  338. So this is the tabernacle.

  339. This is what He's referring to

  340. in our text

  341. in Hebrews.

  342. Then,

  343. verses 6 and 7,

  344. we see that there's a

  345. form and order

  346. for the tabernacle

  347. worship.

  348. Let me read a bit

  349. to you again

  350. from Kent Hughes.

  351. When you have a feel

  352. for the tabernacle,

  353. you can begin to appreciate

  354. its worship.

  355. Its daily worship

  356. was continual.

  357. It's happening

  358. all the time.

  359. Worshippers brought

  360. their sacrifices

  361. to the great bronze altar

  362. in the outer courtyard

  363. one after another.

  364. Week by week,

  365. priests were chosen

  366. by lots,

  367. like casting lots,

  368. for the high honor

  369. of their career

  370. to serve

  371. in the first room,

  372. the holy place.

  373. There they tended

  374. to the seven lampstands

  375. morning and evening,

  376. keeping them full-flamed

  377. and stoked the coals

  378. on the altar of incense

  379. upon which they dropped

  380. handfuls of incense,

  381. filling the room

  382. with a delicious cloud.

  383. Weekly,

  384. they exchanged

  385. the bread with fresh

  386. and then were privileged

  387. to partake

  388. of the sacred loaves.

  389. But none even dared

  390. to glance

  391. into the most holy place

  392. on pain of death.

  393. They had no access

  394. whatsoever.

  395. Ministry in the Holy of Holies

  396. was the domain

  397. of the high priest

  398. and only once a year.

  399. And what a day it was.

  400. During New Testament times,

  401. the high priest

  402. underwent rigorous

  403. preparations for that day.

  404. Seven days before

  405. the Day of Atonement,

  406. the priest left home

  407. and stayed day and night

  408. in the temple.

  409. During the week,

  410. he practiced what he would do

  411. on that great day

  412. so that he would make

  413. no mistake

  414. at the pain of death.

  415. Right?

  416. He went through

  417. the rehearsal of it

  418. to make sure he got it

  419. just right.

  420. He was especially cautious

  421. not to come close

  422. to anything

  423. that would make him

  424. ceremonially unclean.

  425. Then on the morning

  426. of the Day of Atonement,

  427. the high priest

  428. offered a burnt offering.

  429. Following this,

  430. he ritually bathed

  431. his entire body

  432. and then,

  433. instead of putting on

  434. his traditional

  435. gorgeous robes,

  436. donned a sacred

  437. white linen tunic

  438. along with white

  439. undergarments

  440. and a white sash

  441. and white turban,

  442. thus symbolizing

  443. that he was free

  444. from defilement.

  445. Next,

  446. he placed his hands

  447. on the head of a bull,

  448. selected as a sacrifice

  449. for his own sins

  450. and those of his family

  451. and he prayed this,

  452. O God,

  453. I have committed iniquity,

  454. transgressed,

  455. and sinned before thee.

  456. I and my house,

  457. as is it written

  458. in the law

  459. of thy servant Moses,

  460. for on this day

  461. shall atonement

  462. be made for you

  463. to cleanse you

  464. from all your sins

  465. shall you be clean

  466. before the Lord.

  467. And they answered

  468. after him,

  469. blessed be the name

  470. of the glory

  471. of his kingdom

  472. forever and ever.

  473. Then,

  474. leaving the bull

  475. for a few moments,

  476. he turned to two goats

  477. nearby and chose

  478. lots over them.

  479. One was designated

  480. for Jehovah

  481. and the other

  482. for Azazel,

  483. the scapegoat.

  484. A piece of crimson wool

  485. was tied to the horns

  486. of the scapegoat

  487. and a thread

  488. was bound around

  489. the goat

  490. to be slaughtered.

  491. Then the goats

  492. were left

  493. standing together.

  494. The high priest

  495. now turned to the bull

  496. and sacrificed it.

  497. Next,

  498. he filled a censer

  499. with burning coals

  500. from the altar

  501. of burnt offerings

  502. and entered

  503. the Holy of Holies

  504. where he poured

  505. two handfuls

  506. of incense

  507. on the coals

  508. so that a cloud

  509. of incense

  510. covered the mercy seat.

  511. This done,

  512. he exited,

  513. obtaining some

  514. of the bull's blood

  515. which he then sprinkled

  516. on the mercy seat

  517. and then seven times

  518. on the ground

  519. before the cover.

  520. After this,

  521. he sacrificed the goat

  522. designated for Jehovah

  523. and performed

  524. the same ritual

  525. in the Holy of Holies.

  526. Upon emerging,

  527. he mixed the blood

  528. of the bull

  529. and the goat,

  530. put it on the horns

  531. of the altar

  532. and sprinkled the altar

  533. seven times

  534. to consecrate it

  535. from the uncleanliness

  536. of the Israelites.

  537. Then came

  538. the patently joyous

  539. part of the day's ceremonies.

  540. The priest laid both hands

  541. on the head

  542. of the live goat

  543. and confessed

  544. all the iniquities

  545. of the people of Israel

  546. and all their transgressions,

  547. all their sins

  548. and he shall put them

  549. on the head

  550. of the goat.

  551. That's from Leviticus 16.21.

  552. The goat was then led away

  553. into the desert

  554. amidst the jeering

  555. of the people.

  556. Bear our sins

  557. and be gone.

  558. After this,

  559. the high priest

  560. put off his white garments,

  561. bathed again,

  562. arrayed himself

  563. in his gorgeous robes

  564. and completed

  565. the burnt offerings

  566. of the bull

  567. and the goat

  568. plus other offerings.

  569. The remains

  570. were carried

  571. outside the camp

  572. and burned.

  573. And all along

  574. on this day

  575. of atonement,

  576. people waited

  577. with bated breath.

  578. The one man,

  579. the one time of year

  580. who gets to enter

  581. into the presence

  582. of God

  583. and make this sacrifice

  584. on this day

  585. of atonement,

  586. will he do it right?

  587. Will he survive

  588. in the presence

  589. of God

  590. as he makes

  591. this sacrifice

  592. on our behalf?

  593. It was a tense day

  594. until finally

  595. the high priest emerges

  596. and sends away

  597. the scapegoat

  598. and then there was

  599. great rejoicing

  600. and celebration

  601. to be had.

  602. I want to draw

  603. your attention

  604. to something

  605. in verse 7.

  606. The high priest

  607. goes

  608. and he makes

  609. offering for himself

  610. and for the

  611. unintentional sins

  612. of the people.

  613. Just note

  614. the great mercy

  615. of God

  616. to the Israelites.

  617. Ways being made

  618. for them

  619. to make sacrifice

  620. for their sin

  621. all throughout the year

  622. and God

  623. makes a way

  624. for their

  625. unintentional sins

  626. to also

  627. be forgiven.

  628. This day of atonement

  629. was so incredibly

  630. significant

  631. to Jewish worship

  632. of God

  633. but

  634. it was inadequate.

  635. It was inadequate.

  636. It was a divinely

  637. instructed

  638. dress

  639. rehearsal

  640. because this

  641. had to be repeated

  642. again

  643. and again

  644. and again

  645. and again.

  646. It was meant

  647. to show them

  648. something greater.

  649. A greater sacrifice.

  650. A higher priest

  651. who would come

  652. and make

  653. a final

  654. atoning

  655. for all the people

  656. who belonged

  657. to God.

  658. The mosaic

  659. worship

  660. this tabernacle

  661. worship

  662. was a sort

  663. of parable

  664. in action.

  665. as they observed

  666. this

  667. bloody affair

  668. they were meant

  669. to be drawn

  670. to

  671. a greater

  672. more sufficient

  673. sacrifice

  674. for them.

  675. So let's look

  676. a little bit

  677. further

  678. at the

  679. inadequacy

  680. of the

  681. old

  682. covenant.

  683. First

  684. the old

  685. covenant

  686. had

  687. limited

  688. access.

  689. Limited

  690. access.

  691. And you see

  692. this in

  693. verse 6

  694. and through

  695. the first

  696. part

  697. of

  698. verse 9.

  699. All these

  700. preparations.

  701. All these

  702. things going

  703. about.

  704. First

  705. that priests

  706. had to

  707. make

  708. sacrifice

  709. in any

  710. day

  711. that a

  712. sacrifice

  713. was being

  714. made.

  715. And then

  716. this high

  717. priest

  718. the one

  719. man

  720. once

  721. a year

  722. who was

  723. given

  724. access

  725. to God.

  726. Very

  727. limited.

  728. God

  729. dwelt

  730. amongst

  731. his people

  732. in the

  733. tabernacle.

  734. What a

  735. blessing.

  736. But the

  737. access to

  738. him

  739. was

  740. extremely

  741. limited.

  742. The author

  743. of Hebrews

  744. writes in

  745. verse 8,

  746. by this

  747. the Holy

  748. Spirit

  749. indicates,

  750. and he's

  751. referring to

  752. the

  753. inspired

  754. instructions

  755. for how

  756. the tabernacle

  757. was to be

  758. arranged and

  759. how the

  760. tabernacle

  761. worship was

  762. to take

  763. place.

  764. By this

  765. the Holy

  766. Spirit

  767. indicates

  768. that the

  769. way into

  770. the

  771. holy

  772. places

  773. is not

  774. yet

  775. opened

  776. as long

  777. as the

  778. first

  779. section

  780. is still

  781. standing.

  782. Verse 9,

  783. the first

  784. part,

  785. which is

  786. symbolic

  787. for the

  788. present

  789. age.

  790. Now,

  791. there is a

  792. lot of

  793. complication

  794. about the

  795. translation

  796. of verse

  797. 8 and

  798. 9,

  799. and I'm

  800. going to

  801. spare you

  802. it this

  803. morning.

  804. I don't

  805. think the

  806. ESV

  807. version that

  808. I'm using,

  809. ESV,

  810. does it

  811. the best

  812. justice.

  813. I think

  814. more

  815. accurately,

  816. we would

  817. say something

  818. like,

  819. by this

  820. the Holy

  821. Spirit

  822. indicates

  823. that the

  824. way into

  825. the holy

  826. places

  827. is not

  828. opened as

  829. long as

  830. the

  831. tabernacle

  832. is still

  833. standing.

  834. Verse 9,

  835. which is

  836. symbolic

  837. to that

  838. age.

  839. What he's

  840. trying to

  841. communicate

  842. is that the

  843. Spirit in

  844. all of that

  845. temple worship,

  846. as I've

  847. already mentioned,

  848. was pointing

  849. to something

  850. greater that

  851. is realized

  852. in Christ.

  853. And contextually

  854. that makes a lot

  855. of sense,

  856. because that's

  857. exactly where

  858. the author

  859. of Hebrew

  860. goes next.

  861. So,

  862. the author

  863. of Hebrews

  864. tells us

  865. that the

  866. Holy Spirit,

  867. the inspirer

  868. of the divine

  869. instruction,

  870. did so to

  871. teach us

  872. that the

  873. old covenant

  874. was inadequate.

  875. They and

  876. we could

  877. not gain

  878. access to

  879. God by

  880. it.

  881. Right?

  882. Could not

  883. gain access

  884. by it.

  885. There was

  886. limited

  887. access.

  888. Secondly,

  889. the old

  890. covenant

  891. was inadequate

  892. because of

  893. its limited

  894. efficacy.

  895. What it

  896. could accomplish

  897. was limited.

  898. Last half

  899. of verse

  900. 9

  901. and through

  902. 10.

  903. According to

  904. this arrangement,

  905. this working

  906. of the high

  907. priest on

  908. the day of

  909. atonement,

  910. gifts and

  911. sacrifices are

  912. offered that

  913. cannot

  914. perfect the

  915. conscience

  916. of the

  917. worshiper,

  918. but deal

  919. only with

  920. food and

  921. drink and

  922. various washings,

  923. regulations for

  924. the body

  925. imposed until

  926. the time

  927. of

  928. reformation.

  929. It had a

  930. limited

  931. efficacy.

  932. It could

  933. clean up

  934. on the

  935. outside,

  936. but not

  937. on the

  938. inside.

  939. This outward

  940. cleansing,

  941. but not

  942. an inward

  943. one.

  944. Just a bit

  945. ago,

  946. Daryl read

  947. for us

  948. from Psalm

  949. 51.

  950. Turn with

  951. me if you

  952. will to

  953. Psalm 51.

  954. I selected

  955. Psalm 51

  956. to be read

  957. this morning,

  958. and until

  959. he read it

  960. and I

  961. listened to

  962. him reading

  963. it,

  964. I did

  965. not make

  966. the

  967. connection

  968. to this

  969. text.

  970. How's

  971. that for

  972. providence?

  973. Remember

  974. that Psalm

  975. 51 is

  976. written

  977. after David

  978. has committed

  979. egregious

  980. sin.

  981. He's been

  982. a murderer

  983. and an

  984. adulterer.

  985. And this

  986. is him

  987. crying out

  988. to God

  989. that God

  990. would forgive

  991. him for

  992. this.

  993. Verse 1

  994. and 2,

  995. Have mercy

  996. on me,

  997. O God,

  998. according to

  999. your steadfast

  1000. love,

  1001. according to

  1002. your abundant

  1003. mercy,

  1004. blot out my

  1005. transgressions.

  1006. Wash me

  1007. thoroughly

  1008. from my

  1009. iniquity and

  1010. cleanse me

  1011. from my

  1012. sin.

  1013. Crying out

  1014. to God,

  1015. because of

  1016. who you

  1017. are,

  1018. O God,

  1019. cleanse me,

  1020. make me

  1021. pure within.

  1022. He asked

  1023. him to,

  1024. verse 10,

  1025. create in

  1026. me a

  1027. clean heart,

  1028. O God,

  1029. and renew

  1030. a right

  1031. spirit within

  1032. me.

  1033. Verse 11,

  1034. don't cast

  1035. me away

  1036. from your

  1037. presence.

  1038. And then

  1039. in verse

  1040. 16 and

  1041. 17,

  1042. he says,

  1043. for you

  1044. will not

  1045. delight in

  1046. sacrifice,

  1047. or I

  1048. would give

  1049. it.

  1050. You

  1051. would not

  1052. be pleased

  1053. with a

  1054. burnt

  1055. offering.

  1056. For the

  1057. sacrifices

  1058. of God

  1059. are a

  1060. broken

  1061. spirit,

  1062. a broken

  1063. and

  1064. contrite

  1065. heart,

  1066. O God,

  1067. you will

  1068. not

  1069. despise.

  1070. Recognize

  1071. that David

  1072. saw the

  1073. inadequacy

  1074. of the

  1075. sacrifice.

  1076. He saw

  1077. that it

  1078. really

  1079. didn't

  1080. accomplish

  1081. for him

  1082. what he

  1083. desperately

  1084. needed,

  1085. which was

  1086. an inward

  1087. cleansing.

  1088. And so

  1089. we believe

  1090. that David

  1091. saved,

  1092. was God's,

  1093. is with

  1094. God now

  1095. in his

  1096. presence,

  1097. has

  1098. unlimited

  1099. access,

  1100. did so

  1101. believing

  1102. there would

  1103. be a

  1104. way that

  1105. this old

  1106. system,

  1107. this old

  1108. covenant,

  1109. was pointing

  1110. towards

  1111. something

  1112. greater,

  1113. a way that

  1114. he could

  1115. in fact

  1116. be restored

  1117. to God.

  1118. So the

  1119. old covenant

  1120. was inadequate,

  1121. limited access,

  1122. and limited

  1123. efficacy.

  1124. efficacy.

  1125. I'm aware

  1126. that it

  1127. is most

  1128. probable

  1129. that there

  1130. was no

  1131. one here

  1132. listening to

  1133. me say

  1134. anything about

  1135. the old

  1136. covenant

  1137. that is

  1138. still a

  1139. keeper of

  1140. the old

  1141. covenant,

  1142. trying to

  1143. gain acceptance

  1144. with God

  1145. by keeping

  1146. the old

  1147. covenant.

  1148. I don't

  1149. know where

  1150. you'd go

  1151. make the

  1152. sacrifices.

  1153. The day

  1154. of atonement

  1155. doesn't

  1156. happen any

  1157. longer.

  1158. Anyway,

  1159. I know this

  1160. is not what

  1161. you're trying

  1162. to do,

  1163. but many

  1164. of us,

  1165. so many

  1166. of us,

  1167. try to

  1168. earn God's

  1169. favor in

  1170. our works.

  1171. Whether we

  1172. have been

  1173. delivered by

  1174. Christ already,

  1175. found in

  1176. Him,

  1177. we often

  1178. go back

  1179. to that

  1180. old self,

  1181. that old

  1182. tendency

  1183. that God

  1184. would accept

  1185. us because

  1186. of now

  1187. our working,

  1188. which He

  1189. never does,

  1190. which He's

  1191. never pleased

  1192. with.

  1193. It's because

  1194. of Christ's

  1195. working that

  1196. we're accepted.

  1197. it's because

  1198. of who

  1199. Jesus is

  1200. and what

  1201. Jesus

  1202. accomplished,

  1203. and because

  1204. by placing

  1205. our faith

  1206. in Him,

  1207. we are

  1208. found in

  1209. Him that

  1210. we are

  1211. accepted.

  1212. So let's

  1213. look at the

  1214. adequacy of

  1215. the new

  1216. covenant.

  1217. The adequacy

  1218. of the new

  1219. covenant.

  1220. First,

  1221. in the new

  1222. covenant,

  1223. we have

  1224. unlimited

  1225. access.

  1226. We have

  1227. unlimited

  1228. access.

  1229. this.

  1230. We no

  1231. longer have

  1232. need for

  1233. priests.

  1234. We no

  1235. longer have

  1236. need for

  1237. sacrifice

  1238. because

  1239. Christ has

  1240. accomplished

  1241. this.

  1242. He has

  1243. fulfilled

  1244. all that

  1245. the old

  1246. covenant

  1247. required,

  1248. and He

  1249. is our

  1250. great

  1251. high priest.

  1252. If you've

  1253. been with

  1254. us,

  1255. you know

  1256. we've

  1257. been talking

  1258. about His

  1259. Melchizedekian

  1260. priesthood,

  1261. that He

  1262. lives forever

  1263. making

  1264. intercession

  1265. for us.

  1266. verse 25

  1267. of chapter

  1268. 7.

  1269. We no

  1270. longer need

  1271. these things.

  1272. You don't

  1273. come to

  1274. God through

  1275. me,

  1276. praise God.

  1277. You don't

  1278. come to

  1279. God through

  1280. an Aaronic

  1281. priest.

  1282. You come

  1283. to God

  1284. through

  1285. Christ.

  1286. And in

  1287. Christ,

  1288. we have

  1289. unlimited

  1290. access.

  1291. Verse 11,

  1292. praise God,

  1293. starts with

  1294. the most

  1295. precious

  1296. conjunction,

  1297. but.

  1298. This was

  1299. the old

  1300. covenant.

  1301. This was

  1302. all of

  1303. its inadequacy.

  1304. The author

  1305. of Hebrews

  1306. is saying,

  1307. but when

  1308. Christ

  1309. appeared

  1310. as a

  1311. high priest

  1312. of the

  1313. good things

  1314. that have

  1315. come,

  1316. then through

  1317. the greater

  1318. and more

  1319. perfect

  1320. tent,

  1321. not made

  1322. with hands,

  1323. that is,

  1324. not of

  1325. this creation,

  1326. and again,

  1327. I'll spare you

  1328. the long

  1329. explanation,

  1330. but He's

  1331. talking about

  1332. His own

  1333. flesh,

  1334. Jesus'

  1335. flesh.

  1336. He entered

  1337. once for

  1338. all into

  1339. the holy

  1340. places,

  1341. not by

  1342. means of

  1343. the blood

  1344. of goats

  1345. and calves,

  1346. but by

  1347. means of

  1348. His own

  1349. blood,

  1350. thus securing

  1351. an eternal

  1352. redemption.

  1353. Every year,

  1354. the high priest

  1355. entered the

  1356. Holy of Holies

  1357. for one

  1358. day,

  1359. and every

  1360. year,

  1361. he did

  1362. so by

  1363. the blood

  1364. of goats

  1365. and calves,

  1366. right?

  1367. He went

  1368. through all

  1369. of that

  1370. process to

  1371. make himself

  1372. ceremonially

  1373. pure so

  1374. that he

  1375. could enter

  1376. into the

  1377. presence of

  1378. God,

  1379. right?

  1380. He went

  1381. through this

  1382. process of

  1383. these inadequate

  1384. sacrifices,

  1385. but now we

  1386. have unlimited

  1387. access because

  1388. Jesus Christ

  1389. offered up

  1390. himself.

  1391. He is

  1392. the adequate

  1393. sacrifice,

  1394. right?

  1395. He makes

  1396. atonement,

  1397. right?

  1398. Satisfies the

  1399. wrath of God

  1400. in our

  1401. place.

  1402. Beloved,

  1403. you must

  1404. understand

  1405. sin.

  1406. Whether you

  1407. feel the

  1408. weight of

  1409. your sin

  1410. or not,

  1411. it has

  1412. an eternal

  1413. weight because

  1414. it is against

  1415. the holiness

  1416. of an

  1417. eternal

  1418. God.

  1419. It flies

  1420. in his

  1421. face.

  1422. And the

  1423. guilt and

  1424. the shame

  1425. that you

  1426. feel for

  1427. the things

  1428. that you

  1429. do is

  1430. only a

  1431. tiny

  1432. measure of

  1433. the wrath

  1434. that is due

  1435. your sin.

  1436. It is an

  1437. eternal

  1438. wrath because

  1439. you have

  1440. rejected

  1441. his

  1442. good

  1443. order.

  1444. And God,

  1445. because he

  1446. is just

  1447. and he

  1448. is always

  1449. all that

  1450. he is,

  1451. he doesn't

  1452. lay aside

  1453. his justice.

  1454. He doesn't

  1455. overlook

  1456. your sin.

  1457. If you're

  1458. in Christ,

  1459. he punished

  1460. your sin

  1461. on the

  1462. cross.

  1463. If you're

  1464. not in

  1465. Christ,

  1466. he will

  1467. punish

  1468. your sin

  1469. in you

  1470. forever.

  1471. But if

  1472. you are

  1473. in Christ,

  1474. he poured

  1475. out his

  1476. wrath

  1477. in Christ.

  1478. You

  1479. recall Jesus

  1480. in the

  1481. Garden of

  1482. Gethsemane

  1483. praying,

  1484. if there's

  1485. any way

  1486. that this

  1487. cup might

  1488. pass for

  1489. me,

  1490. he's picking

  1491. up Old

  1492. Testament

  1493. imagery of

  1494. the cup

  1495. of God's

  1496. wrath.

  1497. He knew

  1498. that's what

  1499. he was

  1500. going to

  1501. go and

  1502. do.

  1503. So drink

  1504. fully of

  1505. the wrath

  1506. of God

  1507. for all

  1508. who would

  1509. believe

  1510. in him.

  1511. This was

  1512. the significant

  1513. thing that

  1514. happened on

  1515. the cross

  1516. of Jesus

  1517. Christ.

  1518. Not

  1519. merely his

  1520. physical

  1521. death.

  1522. And hear

  1523. me,

  1524. and hear

  1525. me carefully.

  1526. If it

  1527. meant saving

  1528. the people

  1529. in this

  1530. room,

  1531. I would

  1532. die for

  1533. you guys.

  1534. A physical

  1535. death.

  1536. That I

  1537. would do.

  1538. I would

  1539. volunteer

  1540. myself for

  1541. that.

  1542. I love

  1543. you that

  1544. way.

  1545. What I

  1546. could not

  1547. do is

  1548. bear the

  1549. wrath of

  1550. God for

  1551. your sin.

  1552. I

  1553. couldn't

  1554. do it.

  1555. I

  1556. couldn't

  1557. hold up

  1558. to it.

  1559. I'm

  1560. not

  1561. created

  1562. for that

  1563. very

  1564. thing as

  1565. Jesus

  1566. was.

  1567. Eternal.

  1568. The

  1569. God

  1570. man

  1571. could

  1572. bear

  1573. God's

  1574. wrath.

  1575. All

  1576. that

  1577. eternality

  1578. of his

  1579. wrath

  1580. for our

  1581. sin.

  1582. So,

  1583. for God

  1584. to forgive

  1585. you of

  1586. your sin,

  1587. it must

  1588. be punished

  1589. in someone

  1590. else.

  1591. And that

  1592. is the

  1593. person

  1594. of Christ.

  1595. Matthew

    Matthew 27:50

  1596. chapter

  1597. 27,

  1598. verse 50

  1599. and 51,

  1600. Matthew

  1601. records for

  1602. us,

  1603. Jesus

  1604. hangs on

  1605. the cross

  1606. and Jesus

  1607. cried out

  1608. again with

  1609. a loud

  1610. voice and

  1611. he doesn't

  1612. tell us what

  1613. he says,

  1614. but I

  1615. think from

  1616. John 19

  1617. 30,

  1618. we know

  1619. what he

  1620. cries at

  1621. that point

  1622. is,

  1623. it is

  1624. finished.

  1625. I have

  1626. now drunk

  1627. to the

  1628. very bottom

  1629. of the

  1630. cup,

  1631. the wrath

  1632. of God

  1633. and yielded

  1634. up his

  1635. spirit.

  1636. Verse 51

  1637. says,

  1638. and behold,

  1639. the curtain

  1640. of the

  1641. temple

  1642. was torn

  1643. in two

  1644. from top

  1645. to bottom

  1646. and the

  1647. earth shook

  1648. and the

  1649. rocks

  1650. were split.

  1651. we are

  1652. granted

  1653. in

  1654. Christ

  1655. full

  1656. access

  1657. to God

  1658. himself,

  1659. to the

  1660. holy

  1661. places,

  1662. the author

  1663. of Hebrews

  1664. says.

  1665. And so,

  1666. if you're in

  1667. Christ this

  1668. morning,

  1669. you can

  1670. step in

  1671. to the

  1672. presence

  1673. of God.

  1674. You can

  1675. go to

  1676. him with

  1677. anything.

  1678. When he

  1679. looks at

  1680. you,

  1681. he sees

  1682. Christ

  1683. and Christ

  1684. himself

  1685. is seated

  1686. at his

  1687. right hand

  1688. praying on

  1689. your behalf.

  1690. Beloved,

  1691. we have

  1692. unlimited

  1693. access

  1694. to him.

  1695. My

  1696. prayer life

  1697. is so

  1698. rocked

  1699. by contemplating

  1700. this reality.

  1701. How often

  1702. I don't

  1703. go and

  1704. pray to

  1705. our God

  1706. when I

  1707. am in

  1708. Christ.

  1709. Unlimited

  1710. access.

  1711. I may not

  1712. know what

  1713. to pray.

  1714. I'm feeling

  1715. some guilt

  1716. for something

  1717. that I've

  1718. done and

  1719. don't

  1720. feel worthy

  1721. of entering

  1722. his presence.

  1723. The truth

  1724. is,

  1725. I'm not,

  1726. but in

  1727. Christ,

  1728. I can.

  1729. In

  1730. Christ,

  1731. I am

  1732. found

  1733. worthy

  1734. to step

  1735. into the

  1736. presence

  1737. of God.

  1738. This

  1739. is an

  1740. astounding

  1741. truth.

  1742. Sometimes I

  1743. wish we

  1744. had an

  1745. ability to

  1746. time travel,

  1747. take us

  1748. all back

  1749. and let

  1750. us live

  1751. in the

  1752. days of

  1753. limited

  1754. access,

  1755. physically

  1756. seeing

  1757. at the

  1758. tabernacle

  1759. or seeing

  1760. the temple,

  1761. seeing the

  1762. way in

  1763. which it

  1764. was closed

  1765. off,

  1766. so that we

  1767. could really

  1768. comprehend how

  1769. significant it

  1770. is that we

  1771. have unlimited

  1772. access.

  1773. all I

  1774. can do

  1775. myself and

  1776. encourage you

  1777. to do is

  1778. to have an

  1779. imagination

  1780. toward that.

  1781. What would

  1782. that have

  1783. been like?

  1784. To not

  1785. have a

  1786. clean

  1787. conscience.

  1788. To not

  1789. be able to

  1790. fully have a

  1791. clean conscience

  1792. and be able to

  1793. draw into the

  1794. presence of

  1795. God.

  1796. I think we

  1797. would greater

  1798. appreciate and

  1799. more quickly

  1800. go to his

  1801. presence if

  1802. we did.

  1803. So,

  1804. the adequacy of

  1805. the new

  1806. covenant,

  1807. because there's

  1808. unlimited access,

  1809. also because

  1810. there's unlimited

  1811. efficacy.

  1812. What it can

  1813. accomplish,

  1814. right,

  1815. is fully

  1816. powerful

  1817. to accomplish.

  1818. Verse 13

  1819. and 14.

  1820. For if the

  1821. blood of goats

  1822. and bulls

  1823. and the

  1824. sprinkling of

  1825. defiled persons

  1826. with the ashes

  1827. of a heifer

  1828. sanctify for

  1829. the purification

  1830. of the flesh,

  1831. how much

  1832. more?

  1833. Verse 13,

  1834. right,

  1835. if the

  1836. inadequate

  1837. sacrifice

  1838. is good

  1839. enough for

  1840. the time,

  1841. verse 14,

  1842. how much

  1843. more

  1844. will the

  1845. blood of

  1846. Christ,

  1847. who through

  1848. the eternal

  1849. spirit offered

  1850. himself without

  1851. blemish to

  1852. God,

  1853. purify our

  1854. conscience from

  1855. dead works

  1856. to serve

  1857. the living

  1858. God.

  1859. He makes

  1860. our

  1861. consciences

  1862. clean because

  1863. of all our

  1864. sin.

  1865. And beloved,

  1866. hear me,

  1867. the sins

  1868. past and

  1869. the sins

  1870. present,

  1871. the sins

  1872. you've

  1873. committed

  1874. sitting here

  1875. in this

  1876. room,

  1877. and the

  1878. sins

  1879. future,

  1880. were all

  1881. paid for

  1882. in Christ.

  1883. His blood

  1884. covers every

  1885. one of

  1886. them.

  1887. And we

  1888. don't always

  1889. respond well

  1890. to our sin

  1891. in that

  1892. reality.

  1893. very few

  1894. of us

  1895. repent the

  1896. way we

  1897. ought to

  1898. repent when

  1899. we sin.

  1900. Very few

  1901. of us

  1902. flee back

  1903. to the

  1904. cross of

  1905. Christ as

  1906. we should.

  1907. And I

  1908. think in

  1909. some measure

  1910. it can be

  1911. commendable

  1912. because you

  1913. all take

  1914. sin seriously.

  1915. I think

  1916. that's a

  1917. good thing.

  1918. I think we

  1919. ought to

  1920. feel a

  1921. godly sorrow

  1922. over our

  1923. sin.

  1924. And the

  1925. question has

  1926. been asked

  1927. of me,

  1928. how long

  1929. should I

  1930. feel sorrow

  1931. for my

  1932. sin?

  1933. My response

  1934. is,

  1935. only as long

  1936. as it takes

  1937. you to get

  1938. back to

  1939. the cross

  1940. of Christ.

  1941. Have your

  1942. sin break

  1943. you,

  1944. utterly

  1945. destroy you,

  1946. and then get

  1947. quickly to

  1948. the reality

  1949. of who

  1950. God is

  1951. to you

  1952. in Jesus.

  1953. Penal

  1954. substitutionary

  1955. atonement.

  1956. He died

  1957. in your

  1958. stead.

  1959. this thing

  1960. you're feeling

  1961. sorrow over,

  1962. he bore

  1963. God's wrath

  1964. for it

  1965. on the

  1966. cross.

  1967. And have

  1968. your sorrow

  1969. turn to a

  1970. great rejoicing

  1971. in who

  1972. Christ is

  1973. for you.

  1974. We can

  1975. have

  1976. purified

  1977. consciences

  1978. in

  1979. Christ.

  1980. Paul wrote

  1981. in Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1982. chapter 2,

  1983. this is

  1984. verse 16

  1985. and 17,

  1986. he's talking

  1987. about other

  1988. matters of

  1989. ceremonial

  1990. worship.

  1991. verse 16,

  1992. therefore

  1993. no one

  1994. pass judgment

  1995. on you

  1996. in questions

  1997. of food

  1998. and drink

  1999. or with

  2000. regard to

  2001. a festival

  2002. or a new

  2003. moon

  2004. or a

  2005. Sabbath.

  2006. And then he

  2007. says in

  2008. verse 17,

  2009. these are a

  2010. shadow

  2011. of the

  2012. things

  2013. to come,

  2014. but the

  2015. substance

  2016. belongs

  2017. to Christ.

  2018. The new

  2019. covenant

  2020. has

  2021. unlimited

  2022. access

  2023. and

  2024. unlimited

  2025. efficacy.

  2026. I want

  2027. to close

  2028. with a

  2029. reading from

  2030. Pilgrim's

  2031. Progress.

  2032. Once again,

  2033. stick around

  2034. and I'll

  2035. read you

  2036. the whole

  2037. book.

  2038. This is

  2039. very early.

  2040. If you

  2041. don't know,

  2042. this is a

  2043. book written

  2044. by John

  2045. Bunyan.

  2046. It's an

  2047. allegory.

  2048. He's dreaming

  2049. all along

  2050. and everything

  2051. in an

  2052. allegory

  2053. represents

  2054. something

  2055. else.

  2056. And there's

  2057. a man

  2058. who goes

  2059. by the

  2060. name of

  2061. Christian

  2062. and he's

  2063. traveling to

  2064. the

  2065. celestial

  2066. city.

  2067. This is

  2068. very early

  2069. in his

  2070. journey.

  2071. Now I

  2072. saw in

  2073. my dream

  2074. that the

  2075. highway up

  2076. which

  2077. Christian

  2078. was to

  2079. go was

  2080. fenced on

  2081. each side

  2082. with a

  2083. wall and

  2084. the wall

  2085. was called

  2086. salvation.

  2087. Therefore it

  2088. was up this

  2089. highway that

  2090. Christian ran

  2091. but not

  2092. without great

  2093. difficulty

  2094. because of

  2095. the burden

  2096. of the

  2097. load on

  2098. his back.

  2099. He's been

  2100. carrying this

  2101. big backpack

  2102. around.

  2103. It

  2104. represents his

  2105. guilt.

  2106. He ran

  2107. until he

  2108. came to

  2109. a small

  2110. hill at

  2111. the top

  2112. of which

  2113. stood a

  2114. cross and

  2115. at the

  2116. bottom of

  2117. which was

  2118. a tomb.

  2119. I saw

  2120. in my

  2121. dream that

  2122. when Christian

  2123. walked up

  2124. the hill

  2125. to the

  2126. cross his

  2127. burden came

  2128. loose from

  2129. his shoulders

  2130. and fell

  2131. off his

  2132. back tumbling

  2133. down the

  2134. hill until

  2135. it came to

  2136. the mouth

  2137. of the

  2138. tomb where

  2139. it fell

  2140. in to

  2141. be seen

  2142. no more.

  2143. Then

  2144. Christian

  2145. was relieved

  2146. and delighted

  2147. and exclaimed

  2148. with a joyful

  2149. heart he has

  2150. given me

  2151. rest by

  2152. his sorrow

  2153. and life

  2154. by his

  2155. death.

  2156. For a

  2157. while he

  2158. stood in

  2159. front of

  2160. the cross

  2161. to look

  2162. and wonder.

  2163. It was

  2164. very surprising

  2165. to him that

  2166. the side

  2167. of the cross

  2168. should ease

  2169. him of

  2170. his burden.

  2171. He

  2172. continued

  2173. looking at

  2174. the cross

  2175. until tears

  2176. began streaming

  2177. down his

  2178. cheeks.

  2179. As he

  2180. stood looking

  2181. and weeping

  2182. three shining

  2183. ones came

  2184. to him

  2185. and greeted

  2186. him with

  2187. peace be

  2188. with you.

  2189. Then the

  2190. first said

  2191. to him

  2192. your sins

  2193. are forgiven.

  2194. The second

  2195. stripped him

  2196. of his

  2197. rags and

  2198. dressed him

  2199. with new

  2200. clothing.

  2201. The third

  2202. put a mark

  2203. on his

  2204. forehead and

  2205. gave him

  2206. a scroll

  2207. with a seal

  2208. on it.

  2209. The scroll

  2210. is the

  2211. promise of

  2212. the spirit.

  2213. He told

  2214. Christian to

  2215. review it

  2216. often as

  2217. he went

  2218. on his

  2219. way and

  2220. at the

  2221. end of

  2222. his journey

  2223. to turn

  2224. it in

  2225. at the

  2226. celestial

  2227. gate.

  2228. After

  2229. this they

  2230. went their

  2231. way.

  2232. Then Christian

  2233. gave three

  2234. leaps for

  2235. joy and

  2236. went on

  2237. his way

  2238. singing.

  2239. Thus far

  2240. I did

  2241. come burdened

  2242. with my

  2243. sin nor

  2244. could I

  2245. find relief

  2246. from my

  2247. grief within.

  2248. Until here

  2249. I came

  2250. what a

  2251. place this

  2252. is.

  2253. Here shall

  2254. be the

  2255. beginning

  2256. of full

  2257. eternal

  2258. bliss.

  2259. Now my

  2260. burden falls

  2261. from my

  2262. back forever

  2263. from the

  2264. cords that

  2265. bound it

  2266. by grace

  2267. my grief

  2268. is severed.

  2269. Blessed

  2270. cross

  2271. blessed

  2272. tomb

  2273. rather

  2274. most

  2275. blessed

  2276. be

  2277. the

  2278. man

  2279. who

  2280. there

  2281. was

  2282. put

  2283. to

  2284. shame

  2285. a

  2286. shame

  2287. he

  2288. took

  2289. for me.

  2290. Let's pray

  2291. together.
