  1. And as I was thinking on what we should talk about today, I decided on a topic that is really close to my heart, which is typically what you do when you have little notice.

  2. And this topic has to do with a simple question that I think many of us may not have the best answer to, or maybe the most well thought out answer to.

  3. And that question is, what should I do when I don't want to obey? When I don't desire righteousness, when I don't desire the things of God, what do I do?

  4. Do I simply will myself into obedience? What actions or what does the word say about a lack of obedience?

  5. Should I pretend like it's not there and just try to do better the next day, or is there something deeper that can be addressed in our hearts?

  6. So before we open our text, the way that I'd like to frame this message is around a statement in answering that question, and then we'll kind of go through and unpack this statement as we go.

  7. So in response to the question, what should I do when I don't want to obey?

  8. Response.

  9. Worldly desires, whether habitual or momentary, can only be remedied by the work of the Holy Spirit as He renews our minds, changing our beliefs, values, and therefore actions,

  10. as He fills believers with His presence through the receiving of God's Word with faith.

  11. So again, it can only be done by the work of the Spirit as He renews our mind, changing our beliefs, values, and therefore actions,

  12. as He fills believers with His presence through the receiving of God's Word with faith.

  13. And we'll go through a couple of those points, and I'll be sure to repeat them as we go.

  14. So let's read our text for today and see what the Lord has to say on this topic.

  15. So Colossians chapter 3, I'm going to be reading verses 1 through 17.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  16. Before we do that, I'd like to go to the Lord in prayer.

  17. So y'all join me.

  18. Dear God, I thank You for this day.

  19. I thank You for Your Word, which is sufficient to accomplish everything that we need for life and for godliness.

  20. God, I pray that we would put our trust in it and in You.

  21. That we wouldn't trust in worldly philosophy, pop psychology, or even our own wisdom,

  22. but that we would seek Your will by looking at Your Word.

  23. God, I pray that You would renew our minds even in this moment.

  24. That You would orient our hearts away from ourself,

  25. and that You would help us to seek after righteousness the way that You would have us seek after righteousness.

  26. God, let us lay aside any weak excuses.

  27. Let us lay aside any justification of ourselves,

  28. and let us come to You humbly and ready to receive what You would have us to hear today.

  29. Would You work effectively through me, Your servant.

  30. God, and would You accomplish the purpose that You intend for this congregation today.

  31. So God, we love You. In your name we pray. Amen.

  32. Alright, so Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 through 17.

    Colossians 3:1–17

  33. And this is the Word of God.

  34. And it says,

  35. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

  36. Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth.

  37. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  38. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

  39. Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you,

  40. sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

  41. On account of these, the wrath of God is coming.

  42. In these, you too once walked, when you were living in them.

  43. But now you must put them all away.

  44. Anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

  45. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices,

  46. and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

  47. Here there is not Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free,

  48. but Christ is all and in all.

  49. Put on, then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved,

  50. compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

  51. bearing with one another, and if one has a complaint against another,

  52. forgiving each other.

  53. As the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

  54. And above all these, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

  55. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,

  56. to which you were indeed called in one body, and be thankful.

  57. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,

  58. teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

  59. singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,

  60. with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

  61. And whatever you do, in word or deed,

  62. do everything in the name of our Lord Jesus,

  63. giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

  64. Okay, so our first point in the first part of this statement,

  65. the Spirit works to renew our minds.

  66. The Spirit works to renew our minds.

  67. He does this in three specific ways that I see,

  68. as I read this text in others.

  69. He changes our beliefs,

  70. He changes our values,

  71. and therefore He changes our actions.

  72. Now to understand this idea,

  73. we have to understand where our actions and desires actually come from.

  74. Actions are a result of values,

  75. which come from our beliefs.

  76. And so, when I'm using the word beliefs today,

  77. I'm primarily talking about little b belief.

  78. So, things that we believe to be true in a given period of time,

  79. not necessarily like saving belief or saving faith.

  80. And this concept is found throughout the Scriptures.

  81. One example of this is in Luke 6, 43 through 45,

  82. and it reads,

  83. So, based off of what we treasure,

  84. that's what we produce,

  85. or that's what we do.

  86. Each action we take is an expression of what we think is best for us,

  87. most valuable,

  88. and worth treasuring in any given moment in time.

  89. So, every action that we take

  90. always can be traced back to a belief.

  91. And now, we're not always conscious of this going on

  92. as we take actions no matter what it is,

  93. but each action that we take

  94. is a result of us thinking about

  95. and doing what we believe is the best thing for us to do

  96. in that given time.

  97. Therefore, each time that we sin,

  98. we're communicating to God

  99. that our definition and understanding

  100. of what will be best for us

  101. is superior to His.

  102. So, this was the original temptation

  103. and sin in the garden.

  104. And if we think about our own sin,

  105. we'll find this to be true of us as well.

  106. That ultimately, each sin that we commit

  107. is a statement to God saying,

  108. in this moment,

  109. I believe that me sinning

  110. was better than your plan for my life,

  111. which you've commanded to us.

  112. Right?

  113. So, in this way,

  114. every sin is an act of rebellion

  115. and also an act of unbelief,

  116. even if we don't recognize it in the moment.

  117. So, how does the Spirit renew our minds?

  118. Firstly, the Spirit helps us

  119. to change our actions.

  120. And so, I'm kind of working backward

  121. from the outside,

  122. and the Spirit helps to change our actions.

  123. And the prophet Ezekiel is talking about

  124. the new covenant that will come

  125. as a result of the Spirit

  126. indwelling God's people after Christ.

  127. He says in Ezekiel 36,

  128. So, as a result of the indwelling Spirit,

  129. we are caused, in one way or another,

  130. to walk in God's statutes.

  131. Jesus speaks similarly

  132. in John chapter 14, verses 15 through 16.

    John 14:15–16

  133. He says,

  134. If you love me,

  135. you will keep my commandments.

  136. And I'll ask the Father,

  137. I'll ask the Father,

  138. and He will give you another helper

  139. to be with you forever,

  140. even the Spirit of truth.

  141. Okay?

  142. If you love me,

  143. you'll keep my commandments.

  144. I'll ask the Father,

  145. and He will give you another helper

  146. to be with you forever,

  147. even the Spirit of truth.

  148. Now, obviously,

  149. I hope it's obvious to you.

  150. We don't do this in a perfect sense.

  151. Just because we have the Spirit of God

  152. doesn't mean we now obey perfectly.

  153. But, in some way or another,

  154. the Spirit being inside of us

  155. causes us and helps us to walk

  156. in the way that God wants us to walk.

  157. When reading these passages,

  158. you may wonder

  159. how we can both maintain our free will

  160. and also be caused to walk

  161. in God's statutes.

  162. So, the way that this works,

  163. I'm not going to pretend like I know

  164. all of the inner workings

  165. of this idea,

  166. but it is clear that

  167. somehow it does work.

  168. So, we always have the free will

  169. to choose what we want to do.

  170. It's simply that

  171. what we want to do

  172. will change

  173. as God removes our heart of stone

  174. and replaces it with a heart of flesh.

  175. So, again,

  176. we always have free will

  177. to choose what we want.

  178. It's just that

  179. what we want changes

  180. as we're given a new heart.

  181. So, this brings us

  182. to our second point.

  183. The Spirit works...

  184. Our second sub-point.

  185. The Spirit works to change

  186. our values and desires.

  187. How does the Spirit renew the mind?

  188. He works to cause us to obey.

  189. And the Spirit works to change

  190. our values and desires.

  191. So, David ties this idea

  192. of God helping us obey

  193. with our values and desires

  194. in Psalm 37.

  195. So, let's turn there.

  196. Psalm 37,

  197. starting in verse 3.

  198. This is a psalm

  199. that's often misconstrued.

  200. I hope that we can shed

  201. some light on its true meaning today.

  202. Psalm 37,

    Psalms 37:3–7

  203. verses 3 through 7.

  204. Trust in the Lord

  205. and do good.

  206. Dwell in the land

  207. and befriend faithfulness.

  208. Delight yourself in the Lord

  209. and He will give you

  210. the desires of your heart.

  211. Commit your way to the Lord.

  212. Trust in Him

  213. and your justice as the noonday.

  214. Be still before the Lord

  215. and wait patiently for Him.

  216. Okay, so many take

  217. verse 4 by itself

  218. and use it to mean

  219. all types of things.

  220. Like, if you want a Ferrari,

  221. then delight yourself in the Lord

  222. and then God will give you

  223. the desires of your heart.

  224. A Ferrari.

  225. But I don't think

  226. that's quite what

  227. this passage is saying.

  228. As we believe

  229. the Lord is trustworthy,

  230. as we saw in verse 3,

  231. is who He says He is

  232. and therefore value Him,

  233. delighting ourselves in Him.

  234. Once we believe

  235. what He says

  236. over what our flesh

  237. tempts us to believe,

  238. He will give us

  239. what we now desire.

  240. So once our delight

  241. is in Him,

  242. our desires change.

  243. He goes on to say,

  244. commit your way to the Lord,

  245. trust in Him,

  246. and He will act.

  247. To do what?

  248. To bring forth

  249. your righteousness

  250. as the light

  251. and your justice

  252. as the noonday.

  253. So He gives us

  254. now what we desire

  255. with a new heart

  256. delighted in the Lord,

  257. righteousness,

  258. faithfulness,

  259. and justice.

  260. Third sub-point,

  261. how does the Spirit

  262. renew our minds?

  263. The Spirit helps us

  264. to change our thoughts

  265. or our little-be beliefs.

  266. So we're going to flip over

  267. to the parallel passage

  268. to ours from Colossians

  269. this morning

  270. as we look in Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  271. chapter 4,

  272. starting in verse 17.

  273. So flip back forward,

  274. Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  275. starting in verse 17.

  276. We'll see this

  277. a little bit more later on,

  278. but Paul, in many ways,

  279. is writing similar things

  280. to the church at Colossae

  281. and the church at Ephesus

  282. in these two letters.

  283. And the more that you dig in

  284. to these two passages,

  285. the more you see

  286. how they line up together

  287. and the way that they line up

  288. has real significance

  289. for understanding this concept

  290. of what do we do

  291. when we don't want to obey.

  292. Alright, so Ephesians 4,

  293. starting in verse 17.

  294. It says,

  295. Now this I say

  296. and testify in the Lord,

  297. that you must no longer walk

  298. as the Gentiles do

  299. in the futility

  300. of their minds.

  301. They are darkened

  302. in their understanding,

  303. alienated from the life of God

  304. because of the ignorance

  305. that is in them

  306. due to their hardness of heart.

  307. They have become callous

  308. and have given themselves up

  309. to sensuality,

  310. greedy to practice

  311. every kind of impurity.

  312. But that is not the way

  313. that you learn Christ.

  314. Assuming that you have heard

  315. about Him

  316. and were taught in Him

  317. as the truth is in Jesus,

  318. to put off the old self

  319. which belongs

  320. to your former manner of life

  321. and is corrupt

  322. through deceitful desires,

  323. and to be renewed

  324. in the spirit of your minds,

  325. and to put on the new self

  326. created after the likeness of God

  327. in true righteousness

  328. and holiness.

  329. Okay, so this text shows us

  330. that futile, ignorant,

  331. godless, and callous minds

  332. produce sensuality,

  333. doing that which pleases the senses,

  334. impure practice,

  335. corrupt desires,

  336. and so forth.

  337. So based off of what is in the mind,

  338. the thoughts,

  339. they produce actions.

  340. So futile, ignorant, godless minds

  341. produce futile, ignorant, godless actions.

  342. So notice the solution though

  343. in this passage

  344. and others that we'll read.

  345. The solution is not simply

  346. to try harder,

  347. or the solution is not simply

  348. to change the behavior

  349. that that will come,

  350. but the solution is to be renewed

  351. in the spirit of your minds.

  352. Then from our text this morning,

  353. Paul encourages us

  354. to set our mind

  355. on the things of above

  356. where Christ is seated.

  357. Having finished the work

  358. of destroying the power of sin

  359. by taking its consequences on himself,

  360. nailing our record of debt

  361. to the cross,

  362. and allowing us now

  363. to draw near to God

  364. as we've been studying in Hebrews.

  365. So as we think about,

  366. as we set our mind,

  367. as we focus on Christ's finished work,

  368. then that produces

  369. a type of obedience in us.

  370. Paul believes

  371. as we shift our focus

  372. off of the things of this world,

  373. we'll then be able to put to death

  374. what is evil in us,

  375. as it says in verse 5,

  376. by putting on the new self,

  377. which is being renewed in knowledge.

  378. So again,

  379. Paul believes

  380. as we shift our focus

  381. off of the things of this world,

  382. we'll then be able to put to death

  383. what is evil in us,

  384. by putting on the new self,

  385. which is being renewed in knowledge.

  386. Lastly,

  387. Paul tells us

  388. in the Roman believers,

  389. sorry,

  390. in the letter to the Roman believers,

  391. chapter 12,

  392. verse 2,

  393. do not be conformed to this world,

  394. but be transformed

  395. by the renewal of your mind,

  396. that by testing

  397. you may discern

  398. what is the will of God,

  399. what is good,

  400. acceptable,

  401. and perfect.

  402. So again,

  403. we are transformed

  404. in our outward action

  405. by the renewal of the mind,

  406. so that we can aptly decide

  407. what is good,

  408. acceptable,

  409. and perfect.

  410. Notice something

  411. in all three cases

  412. that the renewal of the mind

  413. is always spoken of

  414. in the passive tense.

  415. So Paul is not saying here,

  416. renew your mind,

  417. he is saying,

  418. allow your mind

  419. to be renewed.

  420. And that begs the question,

  421. anytime you are using

  422. the passive voice

  423. in English,

  424. it takes away

  425. the agency.

  426. So the question is,

  427. by whom?

  428. Who is doing?

  429. Or what is doing

  430. the renewing?

  431. And we will see

  432. that it is the Spirit

  433. of God.

  434. How does he do that?

  435. He fills us

  436. with his presence.

  437. So that brings us

  438. to our next point

  439. in our statement,

  440. the Spirit works

  441. by filling us

  442. with his presence.

  443. So let's skip down

  444. in Ephesians

  445. to chapter 5,

  446. verses 18 through 21.

  447. As we are going,

  448. notice the similarities

  449. between this passage

  450. in Ephesians

  451. and Paul's letter

  452. from our original text

  453. in Colossians 3.

  454. So Ephesians 5,

  455. 18 through 21.

  456. Again,

  457. another commonly

  458. misconstrued text.

  459. And it says,

  460. Do not get drunk

  461. with wine,

  462. for that is debauchery,

  463. but be filled

  464. with the Spirit,

  465. addressing one another

  466. in psalms and hymns

  467. and spiritual songs,

  468. singing and making

  469. melodies to the Lord

  470. with all your heart,

  471. giving thanks always

  472. and for everything

  473. to God the Father

  474. in the name

  475. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  476. submitting to one another

  477. out of reverence

  478. for Christ.

  479. So if I asked everyone,

  480. 50 people maybe,

  481. in this room

  482. what it meant

  483. to be filled

  484. with the Spirit,

  485. I would get a bunch

  486. of different answers.

  487. What our idea behind,

  488. what is this filling

  489. of the Spirit?

  490. And if I went outside

  491. of this church,

  492. I would get

  493. an even greater diversity

  494. of answers.

  495. What does it mean

  496. to be filled

  497. with the Spirit?

  498. Many have an idea

  499. that's primarily mystical,

  500. emotional in nature,

  501. and extraordinary.

  502. Maybe the best word

  503. would be,

  504. we think of it

  505. as a spectacle

  506. that we put on

  507. a performance.

  508. But I believe

  509. there's a definitive answer

  510. to this question,

  511. what does it mean

  512. to be filled

  513. with the Spirit?

  514. But to understand it,

  515. we're going to have

  516. to do some work

  517. to reach a decent conclusion.

  518. In short,

  519. to be filled

  520. with the Spirit

  521. is to allow

  522. the Word of God

  523. to dwell in us

  524. richly.

  525. Now,

  526. I know that those

  527. two themes

  528. may not seem

  529. like they're related,

  530. but we'll see

  531. as we look

  532. at our two passages

  533. together

  534. how this is

  535. indeed the case.

  536. So,

  537. if you prefer

  538. the next part

  539. of our statement,

  540. God fills us

  541. with the Spirit

  542. as we receive

  543. His Word

  544. through faith.

  545. So,

  546. looking at this passage

  547. in Ephesians,

  548. we can see

  549. that in Paul's mind,

  550. being filled

  551. with the Spirit

  552. looks like

  553. at least a couple

  554. of things.

  555. Seeing to

  556. and with other

  557. believers

  558. and to God

  559. looks like

  560. gratitude

  561. and it looks

  562. like submission

  563. to authority.

  564. Now,

  565. you may have

  566. read this

  567. unintentionally

  568. as Paul's

  569. giving a list

  570. because he kind

  571. of is in the

  572. middle of a list

  573. and so we have

  574. a tendency

  575. to keep going

  576. on that list.

  577. But notice

  578. when he says

  579. be filled

  580. with the Spirit

  581. and then it's

  582. followed by

  583. three participles

  584. and these participles

  585. in English

  586. they're adverbial

  587. phrases

  588. which means

  589. that it's

  590. modifying

  591. how we should

  592. be filled

  593. with the Spirit.

  594. The three words

  595. be filled

  596. with the Spirit

  597. how addressing

  598. one another

  599. giving thanks

  600. and submitting

  601. to one another

  602. out of reverence

  603. for Christ.

  604. So they are

  605. connected

  606. and it's

  607. answering the

  608. question

  609. what does

  610. it look like

  611. or how

  612. should we

  613. be filled

  614. with the Spirit.

  615. So as I've

  616. pointed out

  617. you've probably

  618. noticed

  619. several similarities

  620. between Paul's

  621. writing in Ephesians

  622. and in Colossians

  623. and these are

  624. not by accident.

  625. So let's

  626. flip back to

  627. our passage

  628. I know we're

  629. doing a lot

  630. of flipping

  631. but it is

  632. important for

  633. you to see.

  634. So back

  635. to Colossians

  636. 3

  637. in verse

  638. 16

  639. it says

  640. let the

  641. word of

  642. Christ

  643. dwell in

  644. you richly

  645. teaching

  646. and admonishing

  647. one another

  648. in all wisdom

  649. singing

  650. psalms

  651. and hymns

  652. and spiritual

  653. songs

  654. with thankfulness

  655. in your heart

  656. to God

  657. and whatever

  658. you do

  659. in a word

  660. or deed

  661. do everything

  662. in the name

  663. of our Lord

  664. Jesus

  665. giving thanks

  666. to God

  667. the Father

  668. through him

  669. and just like

  670. in Ephesians

  671. he goes on

  672. to talk

  673. about submission

  674. in various

  675. areas

  676. in family

  677. in our

  678. employment

  679. and then

  680. masters

  681. and slaves

  682. okay

  683. so in both

  684. cases

  685. we have

  686. these

  687. three

  688. indicators

  689. of what

  690. it looks

  691. like

  692. on the

  693. one

  694. hand

  695. to be

  696. filled

  697. with

  698. the

  699. spirit

  700. and on

  701. the

  702. other

  703. hand

  704. what

  705. it

  706. looks

  707. like

  708. to have

  709. the

  710. word

  711. of

  712. Christ

  713. dwell

  714. in us

  715. richly

  716. those

  717. three

  718. things

  719. singing

  720. gratitude

  721. and

  722. submission

  723. to

  724. authority

  725. so in

  726. Paul's

  727. mind

  728. being

  729. filled

  730. with

  731. the

  732. spirit

  733. produces

  734. the

  735. same

  736. exact

  737. things

  738. as

  739. allowing

  740. the

  741. word

  742. of

  743. God

  744. to

  745. dwell

  746. in

  747. us

  748. richly

  749. if

  750. you're

  751. not

  752. quite

  753. convinced

  754. that

  755. these

  756. passages

  757. are

  758. truly

  759. so the

  760. deeper

  761. you

  762. dive

  763. the

  764. more

  765. similarities

  766. stick

  767. out

  768. these

  769. two

  770. passages

  771. mirror

  772. one

  773. another

  774. all the

  775. way

  776. back

  777. from

  778. Colossians

  779. 2

  780. 16

  781. forward

  782. to

  783. chapter

  784. 4

  785. verse

  786. 1

  787. which

  788. mirrors

  789. Ephesians

  790. 4

  791. 14

  792. all the

  793. way

  794. through

  795. 6

  796. 9

  797. both

  798. passages

  799. are

  800. describing

  801. what

  802. the

  803. new

  804. life

  805. should

  806. look

  807. like

  808. in

  809. comparison

  810. with

  811. the

  812. old

  813. both

  814. begin

  815. by

  816. warning

  817. against

  818. false

  819. doctrine

  820. and

  821. a

  822. command

  823. to

  824. hold

  825. fast

  826. to

  827. Christ

  828. as

  829. the

  830. head

  831. of

  832. the

  833. body

  834. they

  835. go

  836. on

  837. to

  838. encourage

  839. readers

  840. to

  841. put

  842. off

  843. the

  844. old

  845. self

  846. characterized

  847. by

  848. callous

  849. minds

  850. and

  851. hard

  852. hearts

  853. producing

  854. anger

  855. sensuality

  856. greed

  857. and

  858. impure

  859. talk

  860. and

  861. to

  862. put

  863. on

  864. the

  865. new

  866. self

  867. which

  868. is

  869. being

  870. renewed

  871. in

  872. the

  873. likeness

  874. or

  875. in

  876. the

  877. knowledge

  878. of

  879. God

  880. both

  881. passages

  882. as

  883. we've

  884. seen

  885. emphasize

  886. the

  887. role

  888. of

  889. the

  890. renewed

  891. mind

  892. in

  893. producing

  894. new

  895. action

  896. and

  897. they

  898. both

  899. lead

  900. to

  901. on

  902. us

  903. richly

  904. and

  905. to

  906. be

  907. filled

  908. with

  909. the

  910. Holy

  911. Spirit

  912. there's

  913. a lot

  914. more

  915. similarities

  916. than that

  917. just a

  918. quick

  919. few

  920. for

  921. notes

  922. John

  923. Piper

  924. writes

  925. of

  926. these

  927. two

  928. passages

  929. together

  930. and I'll

  931. try to

  932. read this

  933. well

  934. it's

  935. kind of

  936. a lengthy

  937. quote

  938. if we

  939. want

  940. more

  941. of

  942. the

  943. Spirit

  944. of

  945. God

  946. we

  947. must

  948. hear

  949. more

  950. of

  951. the

  952. Word

  953. of

  954. God

  955. with

  956. faith

  957. we

  958. must

  959. hear

  960. its

  961. promises

  962. see

  963. their

  964. blood

  965. bought

  966. certainty

  967. value

  968. their

  969. goodness

  970. and

  971. bank

  972. on

  973. them

  974. that

  975. is

  976. why

  977. sorry

  978. that

  979. is

  980. the

  981. way

  982. God

  983. supplies

  984. more

  985. of

  986. the

  987. Spirit

  988. the

  989. command

  990. in

  991. Ephesians

  992. be

  993. filled

  994. with

  995. the

  996. Spirit

  997. is

  998. parallel

  999. with

  1000. the

  1001. command

  1002. in

  1003. Colossians

  1004. let

  1005. the

  1006. word

  1007. of

  1008. !

  1009. richly

  1010. with

  1011. faith

  1012. in

  1013. other

  1014. words

  1015. not

  1016. only

  1017. does

  1018. the

  1019. first

  1020. act

  1021. of

  1022. faith

  1023. come

  1024. by

  1025. hearing

  1026. but

  1027. all

  1028. subsequent

  1029. acts

  1030. of

  1031. faith

  1032. come

  1033. by

  1034. hearing

  1035. the

  1036. fullness

  1037. of

  1038. the

  1039. Spirit

  1040. comes

  1041. by

  1042. an

  1043. ongoing

  1044. hearing

  1045. of

  1046. the

  1047. word

  1048. of

  1049. God

  1050. so

  1051. Paul's

  1052. writing

  1053. in

  1054. Galatians

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1055. chapter

  1056. 3

  1057. supports

  1058. this

  1059. perspective

  1060. I

  1061. think

  1062. this is

  1063. the last

  1064. place

  1065. we'll

  1066. turn

  1067. today

  1068. just

  1069. a

  1070. couple

  1071. of

  1072. pages

  1073. Galatians

    Galatians 3:2

  1074. 3

  1075. verse

  1076. 2

  1077. !

  1078. And I

  1079. have to

  1080. admit

  1081. before

  1082. studying

  1083. this

  1084. passage

  1085. I've

  1086. read

  1087. this

  1088. one

  1089. in

  1090. particular

  1091. a

  1092. bunch

  1093. of

  1094. times

  1095. but

  1096. I've

  1097. never

  1098. thought

  1099. about

  1100. Galatians

  1101. 3

  1102. in

  1103. this

  1104. way

  1105. it's

  1106. a

  1107. joy

  1108. to

  1109. be

  1110. enlightened

  1111. by

  1112. it

  1113. Galatians

  1114. 3

  1115. 2

  1116. through

  1117. 5

  1118. says

  1119. let me

  1120. ask

  1121. you

  1122. only

  1123. this

  1124. did

  1125. you

  1126. receive

  1127. the

  1128. spirit

  1129. by

  1130. works

  1131. of

  1132. the

  1133. law

  1134. or

  1135. by

  1136. hearing

  1137. with

  1138. faith

  1139. are

  1140. you

  1141. so

  1142. foolish

  1143. having

  1144. begun

  1145. by

  1146. the

  1147. spirit

  1148. are

  1149. you

  1150. now

  1151. being

  1152. perfected

  1153. by

  1154. the

  1155. flesh

  1156. did

  1157. you

  1158. suffer

  1159. so

  1160. many

  1161. things

  1162. in

  1163. vain

  1164. if

  1165. indeed

  1166. it

  1167. was

  1168. in

  1169. vain

  1170. does

  1171. he

  1172. who

  1173. supplies

  1174. the

  1175. spirit

  1176. to

  1177. you

  1178. and

  1179. works

  1180. of

  1181. miracles

  1182. among

  1183. you

  1184. do

  1185. so

  1186. by

  1187. works

  1188. of

  1189. the

  1190. law

  1191. or

  1192. by

  1193. hearing

  1194. with

  1195. faith

  1196. so

  1197. I

  1198. think

  1199. the

  1200. reason

  1201. why

  1202. I've

  1203. missed

  1204. it

  1205. missed

  1206. this

  1207. particular

  1208. point

  1209. is

  1210. because

  1211. a

  1212. it's

  1213. a

  1214. series

  1215. of

  1216. questions

  1217. and

  1218. b

  1219. because

  1220. it

  1221. doesn't

  1222. explicitly

  1223. say

  1224. hearing

  1225. the

  1226. word

  1227. of

  1228. God

  1229. with

  1230. faith

  1231. but

  1232. if

  1233. you

  1234. look

  1235. back

  1236. on

  1237. it

  1238. that's

  1239. exactly

  1240. what

  1241. the

  1242. implication

  1243. is

  1244. we

  1245. hear

  1246. the

  1247. word

  1248. of

  1249. God

  1250. with

  1251. faith

  1252. and

  1253. we're

  1254. saved

  1255. and

  1256. then

  1257. again

  1258. he's

  1259. saying

  1260. we

  1261. hear

  1262. the

  1263. word

  1264. statements

  1265. it

  1266. becomes

  1267. a

  1268. little

  1269. bit

  1270. more

  1271. clear

  1272. we

  1273. are

  1274. perfected

  1275. and

  1276. sanctified

  1277. by

  1278. God

  1279. supplying

  1280. the

  1281. spirit

  1282. which

  1283. comes

  1284. to

  1285. us

  1286. through

  1287. hearing

  1288. the

  1289. word

  1290. of

  1291. God

  1292. with

  1293. faith

  1294. in

  1295. the

  1296. same

  1297. block

  1298. of

  1299. Jesus'

  1300. teaching

  1301. we read

  1302. earlier

  1303. which

  1304. said

  1305. those

  1306. who

  1307. love

  1308. me

  1309. will

  1310. obey

  1311. my

  1312. commandments

  1313. and

  1314. I

  1315. will

  1316. send

  1317. my

  1318. helper

  1319. describes

  1320. the

  1321. spirit's

  1322. role

  1323. in

  1324. this

  1325. way

  1326. in

  1327. John

    John 16 chapter mention

  1328. chapter

  1329. 16

  1330. in

  1331. verse

  1332. 13

  1333. he

  1334. says

  1335. when

  1336. the

  1337. spirit

  1338. of

  1339. truth

  1340. comes

  1341. he

  1342. will

  1343. take

  1344. what

  1345. is

  1346. mine

  1347. and

  1348. declare

  1349. it

  1350. to

  1351. you

  1352. so

  1353. the

  1354. spirit's

  1355. role

  1356. is

  1357. using

  1358. the

  1359. word

  1360. to

  1361. exalt

  1362. Christ

  1363. by

  1364. declaring

  1365. it

  1366. to

  1367. us

  1368. as

  1369. we

  1370. receive

  1371. it

  1372. through

  1373. faith

  1374. so

  1375. we

  1376. saw

  1377. earlier

  1378. that

  1379. the

  1380. renewal

  1381. of

  1382. the

  1383. mind

  1384. was

  1385. passive

  1386. in

  1387. some

  1388. ways

  1389. that

  1390. it's

  1391. something

  1392. that

  1393. we

  1394. are

  1395. renewed

  1396. as

  1397. we're

  1398. doing

  1399. some

  1400. type

  1401. of

  1402. activity

  1403. and

  1404. while

  1405. God

  1406. is

  1407. the

  1408. one

  1409. renewing

  1410. and

  1411. transforming

  1412. we

  1413. are

  1414. the

  1415. ones

  1416. who

  1417. draw

  1418. near

  1419. to

  1420. him

  1421. through

  1422. his

  1423. word

  1424. and

  1425. actively

  1426. seek

  1427. to

  1428. believe

  1429. it

  1430. with

  1431. faith

  1432. James

  1433. reminds

  1434. us

  1435. in

  1436. chapter

  1437. four

  1438. of

  1439. his

  1440. letter

  1441. that

  1442. if

  1443. we

  1444. draw

  1445. near

  1446. to

  1447. God

  1448. he

  1449. will

  1450. draw

  1451. near

  1452. to

  1453. us

  1454. the

  1455. writer

  1456. of

  1457. Hebrews

  1458. thoughts

  1459. and

  1460. intentions

  1461. of

  1462. our

  1463. heart

  1464. so

  1465. as

  1466. we

  1467. approach

  1468. the

  1469. word

  1470. of

  1471. God

  1472. through

  1473. personal

  1474. study

  1475. through

  1476. song

  1477. lyrics

  1478. through

  1479. preaching

  1480. or as

  1481. it is

  1482. brought

  1483. to

  1484. our

  1485. memory

  1486. by

  1487. the

  1488. spirit

  1489. and

  1490. we

  1491. believe

  1492. it

  1493. and

  1494. allow

  1495. it

  1496. to

  1497. soak

  1498. into

  1499. us

  1500. the

  1501. lies

  1502. we

  1503. were

  1504. believing

  1505. beforehand

  1506. are

  1507. replaced

  1508. with

  1509. the

  1510. truth

  1511. we

  1512. no

  1513. longer

  1514. value

  1515. the

  1516. temporary

  1517. pleasure

  1518. of

  1519. sin

  1520. over

  1521. the

  1522. abiding

  1523. satisfaction

  1524. of

  1525. obedience

  1526. we

  1527. will

  1528. no

  1529. longer

  1530. see

  1531. God

  1532. as

  1533. he

  1534. shows

  1535. us

  1536. what

  1537. will

  1538. lead

  1539. to

  1540. joy

  1541. and

  1542. flourishing

  1543. in

  1544. our

  1545. lives

  1546. the

  1547. anxieties

  1548. of

  1549. everyday

  1550. life

  1551. are

  1552. overshadowed

  1553. with

  1554. a

  1555. bigger

  1556. perspective

  1557. where

  1558. God

  1559. is

  1560. in

  1561. control

  1562. and

  1563. not

  1564. us

  1565. he's

  1566. working

  1567. for

  1568. the

  1569. purity

  1570. of

  1571. his

  1572. people

  1573. for

  1574. the

  1575. sake

  1576. of

  1577. his

  1578. name

  1579. which

  1580. isn't

  1581. always

  1582. convenient

  1583. or

  1584. easy

  1585. for

  1586. us

  1587. now

  1588. there

  1589. are

  1590. not

  1591. many

  1592. things

  1593. in

  1594. the

  1595. Christian

  1596. life

  1597. that

  1598. are

  1599. formulaic

  1600. in

  1601. nature

  1602. but

  1603. in

  1604. some

  1605. ways

  1606. genuine

  1607. heartfelt

  1608. obedience

  1609. is

  1610. doesn't

  1611. mean

  1612. it's

  1613. easy

  1614. but

  1615. it

  1616. tells

  1617. us

  1618. what

  1619. we

  1620. need

  1621. to

  1622. do

  1623. we

  1624. know

  1625. God

  1626. always

  1627. empowers

  1628. what

  1629. he

  1630. commands

  1631. and

  1632. I

  1633. believe

  1634. that

  1635. what

  1636. we

  1637. have

  1638. spoken

  1639. of

  1640. today

  1641. is

  1642. largely

  1643. the

  1644. methodology

  1645. he

  1646. expects

  1647. for

  1648. us

  1649. to

  1650. utilize

  1651. so

  1652. let's

  1653. look

  1654. at

  1655. some

  1656. simple

  1657. points

  1658. of

  1659. application

  1660. to

  1661. help

  1662. us

  1663. to

  1664. know

  1665. what

  1666. to

  1667. do

  1668. so

  1669. that

  1670. we

  1671. can

  1672. desire

  1673. obedience

  1674. so

  1675. first

  1676. point

  1677. of

  1678. application

  1679. see

  1680. your

  1681. sin

  1682. as

  1683. a

  1684. belief

  1685. value

  1686. and

  1687. a

  1688. thought

  1689. problem

  1690. not

  1691. simply

  1692. a

  1693. behavior

  1694. problem

  1695. this

  1696. means

  1697. when

  1698. we

  1699. find

  1700. ourselves

  1701. in

  1702. sin

  1703. or

  1704. even

  1705. in

  1706. temptation

  1707. we

  1708. should

  1709. identify

  1710. the

  1711. faulty

  1712. or

  1713. the

  1714. tempting

  1715. belief

  1716. we

  1717. should

  1718. write

  1719. it

  1720. down

  1721. or

  1722. tell

  1723. someone

  1724. that

  1725. we're

  1726. struggling

  1727. to

  1728. believe

  1729. what

  1730. God

  1731. says

  1732. in

  1733. his

  1734. word

  1735. about

  1736. a

  1737. particular

  1738. issue

  1739. we

  1740. should

  1741. memorize

  1742. specific

  1743. passages

  1744. !

  1745. that

  1746. you

  1747. can

  1748. go

  1749. to

  1750. and

  1751. reflect

  1752. on

  1753. in

  1754. the

  1755. midst

  1756. of

  1757. this

  1758. temptation

  1759. so

  1760. again

  1761. if

  1762. sin

  1763. is

  1764. a

  1765. belief

  1766. problem

  1767. then

  1768. we

  1769. need

  1770. to

  1771. address

  1772. our

  1773. unbelief

  1774. secondly

  1775. we

  1776. should

  1777. receive

  1778. his

  1779. word

  1780. with

  1781. faith

  1782. an

  1783. assumption

  1784. built

  1785. into

  1786. all

  1787. of

  1788. this

  1789. is

  1790. that

  1791. we'll

  1792. be

  1793. going

  1794. to

  1795. the

  1796. word

  1797. often

  1798. many

  1799. of

  1800. us

  1801. wonder

  1802. why

  1803. we

  1804. continue

  1805. to

  1806. fight

  1807. and

  1808. struggle

  1809. with

  1810. the

  1811. same

  1812. sins

  1813. whether

  1814. it

  1815. be

  1816. anxiety

  1817. lust

  1818. or

  1819. pride

  1820. and

  1821. yet

  1822. aren't

  1823. taking

  1824. up

  1825. the

  1826. means

  1827. that

  1828. God

  1829. has

  1830. given

  1831. us

  1832. to

  1833. fight

  1834. these

  1835. battles

  1836. thirdly

  1837. we

  1838. should

  1839. seek

  1840. to

  1841. be

  1842. renewed

  1843. the

  1844. assumption

  1845. should

  1846. be

  1847. that

  1848. we

  1849. are

  1850. usually

  1851. in

  1852. a

  1853. state

  1854. of

  1855. drifting

  1856. away

  1857. from

  1858. the

  1859. truth

  1860. back

  1861. towards

  1862. selfishness

  1863. towards

  1864. simple

  1865. orientation

  1866. which

  1867. is

  1868. why

  1869. we

  1870. are

  1871. in

  1872. need

  1873. of

  1874. renewal

  1875. in

  1876. the

  1877. first

  1878. place

  1879. so

  1880. to

  1881. do

  1882. this

  1883. we

  1884. must

  1885. approach

  1886. the

  1887. scripture

  1888. with

  1889. a

  1890. desire

  1891. to

  1892. grow

  1893. more

  1894. and

  1895. more

  1896. into

  1897. the

  1898. image

  1899. of

  1900. God

  1901. this

  1902. comes

  1903. by

  1904. removing

  1905. our

  1906. sinful

  1907. areas

  1908. which

  1909. hurts

  1910. and

  1911. which

  1912. many

  1913. of

  1914. us

  1915. are

  1916. not

  1917. prepared

  1918. for

  1919. this

  1920. kind

  1921. of

  1922. encounter

  1923. when

  1924. we

  1925. approach

  1926. the

  1927. word

  1928. this

  1929. type

  1930. of

  1931. approach

  1932. to

  1933. be

  1934. changed

  1935. and

  1936. to

  1937. be

  1938. renewed

  1939. it

  1940. takes

  1941. hard

  1942. work

  1943. it

  1944. takes

  1945. time

  1946. it

  1947. takes

  1948. consistency

  1949. it

  1950. takes

  1951. intentionality

  1952. just

  1953. like

  1954. everything

  1955. else

  1956. that

  1957. satisfying

  1958. !

  1959. life

  1960. but

  1961. it

  1962. will

  1963. indeed

  1964. bear

  1965. much

  1966. fruit

  1967. and

  1968. lastly

  1969. fourthly

  1970. we need

  1971. to have

  1972. an

  1973. attitude

  1974. of

  1975. preparation

  1976. and

  1977. not

  1978. an

  1979. attitude

  1980. of

  1981. reaction

  1982. so

  1983. have

  1984. an

  1985. attitude

  1986. of

  1987. preparation

  1988. not

  1989. of

  1990. reaction

  1991. if

  1992. we

  1993. wait

  1994. until

  1995. we're

  1996. in

  1997. the

  1998. middle

  1999. of

  2000. the

  2001. battle

  2002. to

  2003. put

  2004. on

  2005. our

  2006. armor

  2007. we're

  2008. likely

  2009. to

  2010. lose

  2011. the

  2012. battle

  2013. we

  2014. have

  2015. to

  2016. be

  2017. prepared

  2018. for

  2019. the

  2020. battle

  2021. that

  2022. we

  2023. know

  2024. is

  2025. going

  2026. to

  2027. be

  2028. at

  2029. hand

  2030. we

  2031. need

  2032. daily

  2033. regular

  2034. !

  2035. mind

  2036. renewal

  2037. if

  2038. we

  2039. are

  2040. to

  2041. prepare

  2042. for

  2043. the

  2044. daily

  2045. battle

  2046. towards

  2047. righteousness

  2048. so

  2049. may

  2050. we

  2051. be

  2052. people

  2053. of

  2054. the

  2055. word

  2056. who

  2057. regularly

  2058. draw

  2059. near

  2060. to

  2061. God

  2062. have

  2063. our

  2064. minds

  2065. renewed

  2066. by

  2067. the

  2068. realities

  2069. of

  2070. the

  2071. gospel

  2072. and

  2073. who

  2074. we

  2075. are

  2076. as

  2077. children

  2078. of

  2079. God

  2080. may

  2081. this

  2082. activity

  2083. produce

  2084. the

  2085. fruit

  2086. of

  2087. righteousness

  2088. in

  2089. us

  2090. as

  2091. the

  2092. very

  2093. spirit

  2094. of

  2095. God

  2096. works

  2097. to

  2098. change

  2099. our

  2100. desires

  2101. our

  2102. thoughts

  2103. and

  2104. our

  2105. actions

  2106. as

  2107. we

  2108. strive

  2109. after

  2110. joy

  2111. let's

  2112. pray

  2113. together
