  1. If you'd like to turn with me to Luke chapter 2, we're going to be reading from verses 8-14.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  2. ! Luke chapter 2, verses 8-14.

    Luke 2:8–14

  3. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  4. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  5. And they were filled with great fear.

  6. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  7. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  8. And this will be a sign for you.

  9. You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling claws and lying in a manger.

  10. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly hosts praising God and saying,

  11. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.

  12. Father, thank you for your word.

  13. Thank you for its nourishment, its light, its counsel, its comfort, its power.

  14. By your spirit, speak to us today.

  15. In Jesus' name.

  16. Amen.

  17. Amen.

  18. In this second week of the Advent season, we take the opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of joy in the gospel message and in our daily lives.

  19. One thing that the scripture clearly teaches is that God wants you to experience great joy.

  20. See, God created you and me with the unique capacity to experience the emotion of delight.

  21. He has equipped you with physical senses that enable you to enjoy the world he created.

  22. We not only see with our eyes, but we delight in what we see.

  23. We delight in his creativity and the beauty of a sunset or flowers or puppies or newborn babies.

  24. We enjoy the wonderful sounds of a waterfall, jingle bells, bird songs, symphony orchestras, and familiar voices.

  25. We savor the taste of milk and honey and smoked jalapeno peppers.

  26. We enjoyably breathe in the sense of peppermint and pine and vanilla and breezes from the sea.

  27. And we find enjoyment in the sensations of fur and cotton and water and sand between our toes at the beach in summer.

  28. And in the warm touch of friendship.

  29. We also experience joy in significant events like births and weddings, victories, accomplishments, and unexpected surprises.

  30. God designed each one of us with the capacity to enjoy the world around us.

  31. And I believe he expects us to give expression to our delight.

  32. It's an act of worship to do that.

  33. In spite of the curse that has tainted the world, this fallen world, we still have the capacity to enjoy, to experience much joy in the world.

  34. But God has also created us to experience another kind of joy.

  35. God gives us the capacity to enjoy Him.

  36. The psalmist declared in light of the Lord's guidance,

  37. In your presence there is fullness of joy.

  38. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  39. Psalm 1611.

  40. And he specifically calls God my exceeding joy.

  41. Psalm 43.

  42. Psalm 43.4.

  43. In spite of the judgment that hovers over a rebellious world,

  44. We've been given favor by God to experience this joy in Him even now.

  45. This is Advent joy.

  46. God holds out to the world the possibility of experiencing joy in Him through the good news of Advent.

  47. Psalm 34.8 says,

  48. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

  49. Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.

  50. Now, we should expect an increase of joy at a holiday season that celebrates the coming of the Savior into the world.

  51. We should expect it.

  52. But we should also understand that much of the joy that we observe at this time has different sources.

  53. Some of you are just looking forward to a vacation from school.

  54. Some spend time outside in the snow.

  55. Most anticipate visits from good friends and family.

  56. We give and we receive gifts.

  57. All these foster happy emotions within us.

  58. And the social atmosphere becomes naturally more jubilant.

  59. But much of the joy that is observed at this season isn't Advent joy.

  60. Joy that is dependent upon a season is not Advent joy.

  61. Joy that has its source in temporal circumstances is not Advent joy.

  62. The uniqueness of Advent joy can be observed in the story of the incarnation.

  63. And in the association of joy with the announcement of Jesus' birth,

  64. that association points to joy's important role in the gospel.

  65. The passage we just read from Luke teaches us that God sent the Messiah King,

  66. the long-awaited Messiah King, into the world so that you would experience great joy.

  67. I believe this truth is emphasized in the passage through an interesting contrast in the story.

  68. The contrast is between the initial response of the shepherds who heard the angel and saw the glory of the Lord

  69. and the response that the angel indicated would most likely correspond to the message that he was bringing.

  70. I'd like to focus on that contrast this morning because I believe it highlights two things.

  71. Two things that God wants you to understand in order to experience greater Advent joy.

  72. First of all, the better you understand, the more you understand your need for the coming of Jesus,

  73. the more you can experience Advent joy.

  74. The first part of that contrast is found in verses 8 and 9, so let's look at that again.

  75. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night.

  76. And the angel of the Lord or an angel of the Lord appeared to them,

  77. and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,

  78. and they were filled with great fear.

  79. This isn't the first time we see in the scriptures that angels have suddenly appeared and scared people out of their wits.

  80. The Bible records many angelic visitations,

  81. and several included responses similar to the shepherds.

  82. The prophet Daniel wrote of being completely drained of his strength,

  83. falling into a deep sleep,

  84. and when the angel touched him and comforted him and had him stand up,

  85. he was trembling,

  86. simply at a vision of an angel.

  87. And in the previous chapter of Luke's account,

  88. both Zechariah and Mary were told by the angel Gabriel not to fear

  89. because they were both troubled.

  90. at this appearance.

  91. But what is unique about this appearance to the shepherds

  92. is the addition of the phrase,

  93. the glory of the Lord shone around them.

  94. During the Exodus,

  95. when the glory of the Lord appeared on Mount Sinai,

  96. we're told that it was in a cloud,

  97. and it was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain.

  98. Exodus 24, 17.

  99. And another time,

  100. when Moses asked God to see his glory,

  101. he had to put Moses in the cleft of a rock

  102. and cover him with his hand

  103. in order to shield him from a direct view of God's glory,

  104. to protect him from death.

  105. Of the shepherds,

  106. it simply says that the glory shone around them.

  107. They were right in the midst of it.

  108. It wasn't on a mountain far away.

  109. They weren't shielded from anything.

  110. It was just all around them.

  111. Their fear was understandable,

  112. not only because they encountered a supernatural being,

  113. frightening enough,

  114. but also because such an encounter with the glory of God

  115. likely highlighted their own sense of sinfulness

  116. and pending judgment

  117. before a holy and righteous God.

  118. To most of us here,

  119. our need for Jesus is pretty obvious.

  120. But many people still don't understand that need.

  121. They argue it away.

  122. Even for many Christians,

  123. we might not completely understand

  124. or we misrepresent our real need.

  125. Jesus is often presented as someone

  126. who can help us in our loneliness,

  127. give us a reason to live,

  128. meet some need for significance

  129. or boost our self-esteem.

  130. You can see this in a lot of the

  131. more popular Christian songs.

  132. But the gospel message starts with the truth

  133. that we need to be delivered

  134. from God's righteous judgment

  135. and an eternal death sentence.

  136. I believe understanding this is the first step

  137. to appreciating the good news of Jesus' coming.

  138. The other part of the contrast

  139. is observed in verse 10.

  140. Look there again.

  141. And the angel said to them,

  142. Fear not,

  143. for behold,

  144. I bring you good news of great joy

  145. that will be for all the people.

  146. The great fear,

  147. verse 9,

  148. stands in stark contrast

  149. contrast

  150. with the great joy

  151. of verse 10.

  152. Now, I admit that the author of the gospel

  153. doesn't say anything about the contrast,

  154. but the connection does appear to be obvious.

  155. And in light of that contrast,

  156. I'm going to suggest

  157. that the Holy Spirit intended it

  158. to be read by us

  159. to communicate something important

  160. to us

  161. about the experience

  162. of the gospel.

  163. I believe that in order

  164. to fully experience

  165. the great joy of Advent,

  166. you and I not only need

  167. to better understand

  168. our need of His coming,

  169. but we need to better understand

  170. the joy

  171. associated

  172. with the good news.

  173. So, first of all,

  174. what do we mean by joy?

  175. An older Webster's definition,

  176. 1828 version.

  177. I like that version.

  178. It's not politically correct.

  179. Says this about joy.

  180. It's the passion or emotion

  181. excited by the acquisition

  182. or expectation of good.

  183. That excitement of pleasurable feelings

  184. which is caused by success,

  185. good fortune

  186. and gratification of desire

  187. or some good possessed

  188. or by a rational prospect

  189. of possessing

  190. what we love

  191. or desire.

  192. Gladness.

  193. Exaltation.

  194. Now, that definition

  195. coincides very well

  196. with the definitions

  197. that the biblical words

  198. give us

  199. or are translated

  200. by our English word

  201. joy

  202. or rejoice

  203. or gladness.

  204. There's been a lot

  205. of discussion

  206. over the years

  207. about the difference

  208. between joy

  209. and happiness

  210. in the Christian life.

  211. Some make a strong distinction

  212. like this popular

  213. 19th century evangelical

  214. who wrote,

  215. joy is a distinctly

  216. Christian word

  217. and a Christian thing.

  218. It is the reverse

  219. of happiness.

  220. Happiness

  221. is the result

  222. of what happens

  223. of an agreeable sort.

  224. Joy

  225. has its springs

  226. deep inside

  227. and that spring

  228. never runs dry

  229. no matter what happens.

  230. Only Jesus

  231. gives joy.

  232. He had joy

  233. singing its music

  234. within

  235. even under

  236. the shadow

  237. of the cross.

  238. joy

  239. Now you're like

  240. I might read that

  241. and go,

  242. wow,

  243. that sounds great.

  244. But as wonderful

  245. as it sounds,

  246. it doesn't agree

  247. with either

  248. the English

  249. definition

  250. of joy

  251. or the biblical

  252. definition.

  253. Joy in the Bible

  254. is used

  255. of emotions

  256. and celebrations

  257. of the ungodly

  258. as well as the godly.

  259. It's used

  260. of a donkey.

  261. The main

  262. distinctions

  263. that we do find

  264. in the scripture

  265. are in the objects

  266. of the joy.

  267. God

  268. and his care

  269. being prominent

  270. and

  271. its duration.

  272. Job 20

    Job 20:5

  273. verse 5

  274. declares

  275. the joy

  276. of the godless

  277. is for

  278. a moment.

  279. Whereas

  280. Isaiah

  281. says

  282. the godly

  283. are promised

  284. everlasting

  285. joy.

  286. Isaiah

  287. 51

  288. 11

  289. I draw

  290. your attention

  291. to this

  292. because

  293. over the years

  294. many have

  295. tried to

  296. present joy

  297. as something

  298. altogether

  299. different

  300. from the

  301. happy

  302. emotions

  303. that we

  304. share with

  305. every human

  306. being.

  307. They promote

  308. an emotionless

  309. joy

  310. because it's

  311. deep and

  312. spiritual

  313. has nothing

  314. to do

  315. with our

  316. feelings.

  317. This

  318. just isn't

  319. so.

  320. The various

  321. biblical synonyms

  322. that depict

  323. joy like

  324. simcha

  325. and

  326. sason

  327. gil

  328. ra'anan

  329. !

  330. These are

  331. all

  332. distinguished

  333. primarily

  334. by the

  335. way

  336. the emotion

  337. is expressed.

  338. There's

  339. joyful

  340. shouting,

  341. there's

  342. joyful

  343. singing,

  344. there's

  345. intense

  346. joy,

  347. joy,

  348. there's

  349. quiet

  350. joy.

  351. But in

  352. all cases,

  353. joy is

  354. clearly

  355. something

  356. observed.

  357. As a matter

  358. of fact,

  359. Nehemiah

  360. records a

  361. time in

  362. Israel's

  363. history when

  364. the people's

  365. joy was

  366. actually heard.

  367. That's what it

  368. says.

  369. It was

  370. heard.

  371. Verse

  372. 43 of

  373. chapter 12

  374. of Nehemiah

  375. says,

  376. And they

  377. offered

  378. great

  379. sacrifices

  380. that day

  381. and

  382. rejoiced

  383. for God

  384. had made

  385. them rejoice

  386. with great

  387. joy.

  388. The women

  389. and the

  390. children

  391. also

  392. rejoiced

  393. and the

  394. joy of

  395. Jerusalem

  396. was heard

  397. far away.

  398. The

  399. angel's

  400. announcement,

  401. good news

  402. to the

  403. shepherds,

  404. was described

  405. as one

  406. that brings

  407. great

  408. joy.

  409. First of

  410. all,

  411. it's joyous

  412. news because

  413. it's the

  414. fulfillment of

  415. a long

  416. awaited

  417. promise

  418. to

  419. mankind.

  420. A long

  421. awaited

  422. answer

  423. to the

  424. human

  425. predicament.

  426. It's

  427. news of

  428. a savior.

  429. It's

  430. news of

  431. the

  432. anticipated

  433. messianic

  434. king's

  435. arrival.

  436. It's

  437. news of

  438. God's

  439. gracious

  440. plan to

  441. save his

  442. people from

  443. his own

  444. wrath.

  445. It's

  446. news of

  447. the

  448. impartation

  449. of

  450. righteousness

  451. to

  452. those

  453. who are

  454. unrighteous.

  455. It's

  456. good news

  457. of the

  458. dawning

  459. of eternal

  460. life in

  461. a renewed

  462. universe.

  463. others.

  464. It's

  465. the news

  466. of an

  467. effectual

  468. sacrifice

  469. on our

  470. behalf.

  471. I can't

  472. help but

  473. believe that

  474. the contrast

  475. in these

  476. verses are

  477. intended to

  478. emphasize the

  479. wonder of

  480. the message.

  481. It's

  482. benefits to

  483. Israel,

  484. it's

  485. grandeur,

  486. it's

  487. mystery,

  488. and it's

  489. amazing

  490. initiation in

  491. these humble

  492. circumstances

  493. among sheep

  494. and shepherds.

  495. we're

  496. right to

  497. focus on

  498. that aspect

  499. that God

  500. in all

  501. his stated

  502. glory would

  503. appear as

  504. a child

  505. in a

  506. cave

  507. among

  508. animals.

  509. But you

  510. have to

  511. remember

  512. that the

  513. announcement

  514. came in

  515. one of the

  516. greatest

  517. displays

  518. of

  519. trembling

  520. fear

  521. to the

  522. shepherds.

  523. But I

  524. also believe

  525. that there's

  526. something more

  527. being communicated

  528. here by this

  529. phrase,

  530. great joy.

  531. The

  532. prophets of

  533. Israel wrote

  534. a great

  535. deal about

  536. joy,

  537. and they

  538. predicted a

  539. time when

  540. joy would

  541. be prominent.

  542. joy.

  543. I mean,

  544. they didn't

  545. just indicate

  546. that there

  547. would be

  548. joy at

  549. the arrival

  550. of a

  551. new world,

  552. but they

  553. prophesied

  554. that joy

  555. would characterize

  556. that world.

  557. If you

  558. want to look

  559. at Isaiah

  560. 65,

  561. 17 through

  562. 19 for

  563. an example,

  564. it's

  565. amazing.

  566. the

  567. prophet

  568. writes,

  569. for behold,

  570. I

  571. create

  572. new

  573. heavens

  574. and a

  575. new

  576. earth,

  577. and the

  578. former

  579. things

  580. shall not

  581. be remembered

  582. or come

  583. to mind,

  584. but be

  585. glad and

  586. rejoice

  587. forever

  588. in that

  589. which I

  590. create.

  591. For

  592. behold,

  593. I

  594. create

  595. Jerusalem

  596. to be

  597. a

  598. joy.

  599. and her

  600. people

  601. to be

  602. a

  603. gladness.

  604. What did

  605. God have

  606. in mind?

  607. It's

  608. mind-boggling,

  609. I think.

  610. I mean,

  611. what do you

  612. think of

  613. when you

  614. think of

  615. heaven?

  616. Sitting

  617. at the

  618. beach

  619. a lot?

  620. dutifully

  621. serving?

  622. That's

  623. not the

  624. picture we

  625. get from

  626. the

  627. prophets,

  628. anyway.

  629. I

  630. will

  631. rejoice

  632. in

  633. Jerusalem

  634. and be

  635. glad in

  636. my

  637. people.

  638. No

  639. more

  640. shall

  641. be

  642. heard

  643. in it

  644. the

  645. sound

  646. of

  647. weeping

  648. and

  649. the

  650. cry

  651. of

  652. distress.

  653. It's

  654. an

  655. important

  656. thing

  657. to

  658. realize

  659. this

  660. idea

  661. of

  662. joy

  663. replacing

  664. suffering.

  665. I think

  666. it impacts

  667. us most

  668. because we

  669. know what

  670. suffering is

  671. like.

  672. We

  673. experience

  674. it.

  675. We

  676. spirits it

  677. all our

  678. lives

  679. in one

  680. way or

  681. another.

  682. This

  683. world is

  684. characterized

  685. by

  686. suffering.

  687. And yet

  688. God

  689. promises a

  690. time when

  691. that

  692. suffering

  693. will be

  694. gone

  695. completely.

  696. And I

  697. think it

  698. increases

  699. the joy.

  700. At

  701. least

  702. the

  703. very

  704. understanding

  705. of it.

  706. But this

  707. passage tells

  708. us that

  709. the Lord

  710. is a

  711. God who

  712. rejoices

  713. and he

  714. has

  715. destined

  716. us to

  717. reflect

  718. that

  719. joy.

  720. Now,

  721. though the

  722. prophet spoke

  723. of a day

  724. that is

  725. still to

  726. come,

  727. there's

  728. no doubt

  729. that God

  730. wants you

  731. to experience

  732. this joy

  733. now.

  734. Advent

  735. joy is

  736. a message

  737. of present

  738. joy.

  739. Joy was

  740. a prominent

  741. characteristic

  742. of the

  743. early church.

  744. One

  745. theologian

  746. in the

  747. late

  748. 19th

  749. century

  750. declared,

  751. the New

  752. Testament

  753. is the

  754. most

  755. buoyant,

  756. exhilarating,

  757. and joyful

  758. book in

  759. the world.

  760. And in

  761. the pages

  762. of the

  763. New

  764. Testament

  765. we see

  766. joy in

  767. the

  768. New Testament

  769. also directs

  770. us to

  771. rejoice in

  772. the Lord

  773. always.

  774. Philippians

  775. 4.4

  776. And it

  777. reminds us

  778. that our

  779. joy in

  780. the midst

  781. of our

  782. troubles

  783. is

  784. inexpressible

  785. and full

  786. of glory.

  787. 1 Peter

  788. 1.8

  789. Advent

  790. joy

  791. is a

  792. joy that

  793. transcends

  794. all other

  795. joys

  796. because it

  797. is based

  798. on the

  799. goodness

  800. and

  801. greatness

  802. of God

  803. our

  804. Father

  805. and his

  806. Son

  807. and his

  808. Spirit

  809. in their

  810. delight

  811. for each

  812. other

  813. and their

  814. eternal

  815. work

  816. on our

  817. behalf

  818. to

  819. share

  820. in

  821. their

  822. joy.

  823. It's a

  824. relational

  825. joy.

  826. It's a

  827. joy we

  828. share.

  829. It's an

  830. experiential

  831. joy.

  832. It's

  833. observable

  834. and

  835. undeniable.

  836. It's an

  837. effectual

  838. joy.

  839. It

  840. affects the

  841. way we

  842. live and

  843. strengthens

  844. us to

  845. resist

  846. the

  847. pleasures,

  848. the

  849. temporary

  850. pleasures,

  851. the

  852. insignificant

  853. in

  854. comparison

  855. pleasures

  856. that are

  857. all around

  858. us.

  859. And it

  860. is a

  861. lasting

  862. joy,

  863. a joy

  864. that never

  865. ends but

  866. only

  867. increases

  868. for ages

  869. to come.

  870. I believe

  871. God wants

  872. you to

  873. experience

  874. more fully

  875. his great

  876. advent

  877. joy.

  878. The more

  879. you appreciate

  880. why Jesus

  881. had to

  882. come,

  883. why he

  884. came,

  885. how he

  886. came,

  887. I believe

  888. the more

  889. you will

  890. experience

  891. his everlasting

  892. advent

  893. joy.

  894. Now

  895. many

  896. of the

  897. history

  898. of the

  899. church,

  900. philosophers

  901. who have

  902. looked at

  903. the Bible

  904. and Christian

  905. teaching

  906. have

  907. criticized

  908. the Bible's

  909. emphasis

  910. on the

  911. fallenness

  912. of humanity.

  913. They

  914. suggest

  915. that

  916. such a

  917. negative

  918. view

  919. of

  920. human

  921. nature

  922. leads

  923. to

  924. low

  925. self-esteem,

  926. hinders

  927. human

  928. potential

  929. and

  930. progress,

  931. happiness.

  932. Now,

  933. I can

  934. see what

  935. they're

  936. saying

  937. if

  938. there

  939. were

  940. no

  941. God

  942. and

  943. if

  944. there

  945. were

  946. no

  947. solution.

  948. But there

  949. is a

  950. solution.

  951. The baby

  952. born in

  953. Bethlehem

  954. is Christ

  955. the Lord

  956. and became

  957. the atoning

  958. sacrifice

  959. that satisfies

  960. God's

  961. justice

  962. and provides

  963. you with

  964. an undeserved

  965. righteousness

  966. and everlasting

  967. ever

  968. increasing

  969. joy

  970. now

  971. and

  972. forever.

  973. And I

  974. believe this

  975. doesn't just

  976. apply to

  977. salvation.

  978. It applies

  979. to us

  980. in our

  981. daily

  982. lives.

  983. And it's

  984. very helpful

  985. to us

  986. in our

  987. daily

  988. lives.

  989. When you

  990. look at

  991. the world

  992. today,

  993. the ideal

  994. person is

  995. one who's

  996. got it

  997. all

  998. together.

  999. Or at

  1000. the very

  1001. least can

  1002. say,

  1003. I've got

  1004. this.

  1005. that's

  1006. the

  1007. theme

  1008. right?

  1009. Of the

  1010. modern

  1011. individual.

  1012. And

  1013. it's

  1014. contrast

  1015. for us

  1016. perhaps

  1017. are those

  1018. who

  1019. believe

  1020. that the

  1021. Christian

  1022. life

  1023. needs to

  1024. be so

  1025. solemn

  1026. that

  1027. there's

  1028. no

  1029. expression

  1030. of joy

  1031. or very

  1032. little.

  1033. And

  1034. both

  1035. extremes

  1036. I think

  1037. are misguided.

  1038. because

  1039. when we

  1040. truly

  1041. understand

  1042. our

  1043. need

  1044. for

  1045. Christ

  1046. even

  1047. now

  1048. it's

  1049. not

  1050. meant

  1051. to

  1052. cause

  1053. us

  1054. to

  1055. walk

  1056. around

  1057. in

  1058. gloom

  1059. and

  1060. doom

  1061. but

  1062. it's

  1063. meant

  1064. to

  1065. drive

  1066. us

  1067. to

  1068. the

  1069. one

  1070. who

  1071. can

  1072. help

  1073. us.

  1074. And

  1075. the

  1076. more

  1077. we

  1078. experience

  1079. that

  1080. pain

  1081. or

  1082. frustration

  1083. of

  1084. failure

  1085. and

  1086. inadequacy

  1087. and

  1088. all

  1089. those

  1090. things

  1091. that

  1092. we

  1093. are

  1094. trying

  1095. to

  1096. get

  1097. rid

  1098. of

  1099. the

  1100. more

  1101. we

  1102. experience

  1103. that

  1104. the

  1105. more

  1106. it

  1107. should

  1108. drive

  1109. us

  1110. to

  1111. the

  1112. one

  1113. who

  1114. is

  1115. our

  1116. strength.

  1117. as

  1118. Nehemiah

  1119. said

  1120. to

  1121. those

  1122. people

  1123. who

  1124. were

  1125. rejoicing

  1126. the

  1127. joy

  1128. of

  1129. the

  1130. Lord

  1131. is

  1132. your

  1133. strength.

  1134. How

  1135. can

  1136. you

  1137. have

  1138. joy

  1139. in

  1140. suffering?

  1141. How

  1142. can

  1143. you

  1144. have

  1145. joy

  1146. and

  1147. feel

  1148. miserable

  1149. about

  1150. your

  1151. own

  1152. self?

  1153. I

  1154. don't

  1155. know

  1156. but

  1157. it's

  1158. possible

  1159. because

  1160. we

  1161. know

  1162. when

  1163. we

  1164. convince

  1165. ourselves

  1166. when

  1167. we

  1168. tell

  1169. ourselves

  1170. it

  1171. doesn't

  1172. really

  1173. depend

  1174. on

  1175. me

  1176. that

  1177. we

  1178. can

  1179. go

  1180. to

  1181. God

  1182. and

  1183. you

  1184. know

  1185. what

  1186. he's

  1187. just

  1188. delighted

  1189. when

  1190. we

  1191. come

  1192. to

  1193. him

  1194. like

  1195. that

  1196. and

  1197. then

  1198. he

  1199. answers

  1200. us

  1201. and

  1202. then

  1203. we

  1204. receive

  1205. it

  1206. and

  1207. then

  1208. we're

  1209. excited

  1210. that

  1211. God

  1212. came

  1213. through

  1214. for

  1215. us

  1216. and

  1217. it

  1218. helps

  1219. us

  1220. the

  1221. next

  1222. time

  1223. we

  1224. are

  1225. in

  1226. similar

  1227. circumstances

  1228. God

  1229. wants

  1230. us

  1231. to

  1232. know

  1233. our

  1234. need

  1235. of

  1236. Christ

  1237. for

  1238. salvation

  1239. and

  1240. for

  1241. just

  1242. getting

  1243. up

  1244. in

  1245. the

  1246. morning

  1247. sometimes

  1248. he

  1249. wants

  1250. us

  1251. to

  1252. know

  1253. that

  1254. so

  1255. that

  1256. we

  1257. can

  1258. experience

  1259. and

  1260. appreciate

  1261. more

  1262. deeply

  1263. what

  1264. he's

  1265. done

  1266. on

  1267. our

  1268. behalf

  1269. the

  1270. gospel

  1271. coming

  1272. of

  1273. Christ

  1274. I'd

  1275. like

  1276. to

  1277. close

  1278. with

  1279. reading

  1280. a

  1281. quote

  1282. or

  1283. part

  1284. of a

  1285. quote

  1286. of a

  1287. pastor

  1288. who

  1289. who

  1290. aware

  1291. of the

  1292. possibility

  1293. that

  1294. some

  1295. might

  1296. think

  1297. that

  1298. emphasizing

  1299. this

  1300. emotional

  1301. aspect

  1302. of joy

  1303. could

  1304. result

  1305. in

  1306. self

  1307. absorbed

  1308. isolation

  1309. among

  1310. people

  1311. among

  1312. the

  1313. church

  1314. and

  1315. he

  1316. argued

  1317. that

  1318. Advent

  1319. joy

  1320. has

  1321. the

  1322. opposite

  1323. effect

  1324. he

  1325. wrote

  1326. it

  1327. is

  1328. deep

  1329. delight

  1330. and

  1331. joy

  1332. in

  1333. the

  1334. all

  1335. satisfying

  1336. beauty

  1337. of

  1338. Christ

  1339. that

  1340. stokes

  1341. the

  1342. white

  1343. hot

  1344. flame

  1345. of

  1346. passion

  1347. for

  1348. the

  1349. plight

  1350. of

  1351. the

  1352. nations

  1353. that

  1354. energizes

  1355. the

  1356. will

  1357. of

  1358. man

  1359. or

  1360. woman

  1361. to

  1362. make

  1363. whatever

  1364. sacrifices

  1365. are

  1366. necessary

  1367. to

  1368. preserve

  1369. a

  1370. marriage

  1371. that

  1372. is

  1373. falling

  1374. apart

  1375. that

  1376. empowers

  1377. the

  1378. human

  1379. heart

  1380. to

  1381. overcome

  1382. addictive

  1383. behavior

  1384. and

  1385. sustains

  1386. the

  1387. soul

  1388. in

  1389. its

  1390. fight

  1391. against

  1392. sin

  1393. and

  1394. temptation

  1395. that

  1396. enables

  1397. a

  1398. weak

  1399. and

  1400. broken

  1401. soul

  1402. to

  1403. persevere

  1404. when

  1405. a

  1406. job

  1407. is

  1408. lost

  1409. or a

  1410. child

  1411. rebels

  1412. or a

  1413. promise

  1414. is

  1415. shattered

  1416. or a

  1417. dream

  1418. becomes

  1419. nothing

  1420. that

  1421. encourages

  1422. the

  1423. timid

  1424. and

  1425. fearful

  1426. heart

  1427. to

  1428. engage

  1429. and

  1430. confront

  1431. the

  1432. the

  1433. Christless

  1434. culture

  1435. in which

  1436. we live

  1437. with the

  1438. good news

  1439. of the

  1440. gospel

  1441. of the

  1442. cross

  1443. of

  1444. Christ

  1445. and the

  1446. life

  1447. of

  1448. forgiveness

  1449. and hope

  1450. that

  1451. can only

  1452. be found

  1453. through

  1454. faith

  1455. in

  1456. Jesus

  1457. and

  1458. it

  1459. is

  1460. the

  1461. deep

  1462. it

  1463. is

  1464. deep

  1465. delight

  1466. and

  1467. joy

  1468. in the

  1469. all

  1470. satisfying

  1471. beauty

  1472. of

  1473. Christ

  1474. that

  1475. will

  1476. sustain

  1477. a

  1478. church

  1479. through

  1480. adversity
