  1. Please take your copy of God's Word this morning and join me in Hebrews chapter 11.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  2. Amen.

  3. This morning, after an extended break, we will take back up our study of the book of Hebrews.

  4. Recall with me that this letter was written to a church of Greek-speaking Jewish converts

  5. that had suffered much and that would likely suffer much more.

  6. The text gives us evidence that some of them had already abandoned the faith

  7. and that this remnant being written to was being tempted to do the same.

  8. The author of Hebrews takes great pains throughout this letter to show his readers

  9. that Jesus as the Christ is more excellent than any faith system the world can offer

  10. with a particular backdrop of Judaism.

  11. Today, we find ourselves just eight verses into the famous faith chapter of Hebrews

  12. in which its author is making the case that it is those who persevere by faith

  13. who save their souls.

  14. He wrote in Hebrews chapter 10, verses 35 and following,

    Hebrews 10:35

  15. Do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

  16. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God,

  17. you may receive what is promised.

  18. For yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay.

  19. But my righteous one shall live by faith.

  20. And if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.

  21. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed,

  22. but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

  23. Chapter 11, he goes on, contains a biographical description

  24. of this soul-preserving, persevering faith.

  25. He begins in chapter 11, verse 1 and 2.

  26. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for,

  27. the conviction of things not seen.

  28. For by it the people of old receive their commendation or approval.

  29. And he proceeds with many examples,

  30. beginning with Genesis 4, the example of Abel.

  31. Then he speaks of the faith of Enoch,

  32. which can be discovered in Genesis chapter 5,

    Genesis 5 chapter mention

  33. and the faith of Noah, found in Genesis chapter 6.

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  34. You see, he has his original Jewish listeners in mind

  35. as he is walking through the history of their patriarchs

  36. to make his point.

  37. Their history is also our history.

  38. So this point is not lost on us.

  39. This weekend, next, Lord willing,

  40. we will consider the paramount faith of Abraham and his family.

  41. So join me as we read today's text,

  42. Hebrews chapter 11, verses 8 through 16.

    Hebrews 11:8–16

  43. Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved,

  44. that this is God's word to us.

  45. It's written for his glory and our good.

  46. We would all do well to listen to it

  47. in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  48. By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place

  49. that he was to receive an inheritance.

  50. And he went out not knowing where he was going.

  51. By faith, he went to live in the land of promise,

  52. as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob,

  53. heirs with him of the same promise.

  54. For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations,

  55. whose designer and builder is God.

  56. By faith, Sarah herself received power to conceive,

  57. even when she was past the age,

  58. since she considered him faithful who had promised.

  59. Therefore, from one man and him as good as dead,

  60. were born descendants, as many as the stars of heaven

  61. and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.

  62. These all died in faith,

  63. not having received the things promised,

  64. but having seen them and greeted them from afar

  65. and having acknowledged that they were strangers

  66. and exiles on the earth.

  67. For people who speak thus make it clear

  68. that they are seeking a homeland.

  69. If they had been thinking of that land

  70. from which they had gone out,

  71. they would have had opportunity to return.

  72. But as it is, they desire a better country,

  73. that is, a heavenly one.

  74. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God,

  75. for he has prepared for them a city.

  76. Remember that the book of Hebrews is written

  77. in the finest Greek in all the New Testament.

  78. So as we labor together to work out its meaning,

  79. we will do so in the following outline,

  80. which I hope is not overly simplistic,

  81. but helpful to us

  82. as we consider the faith of Abraham and his family.

  83. Number one, faith in the promised land.

  84. And we will talk about faith obeying,

  85. faith costing,

  86. and faith tearing under that initial point.

  87. Secondly, faith in the promised son.

  88. We will also discuss faith is certain

  89. and faith is rewarded.

  90. And then finally, faith perseveres to the end.

  91. So first, faith in the promised land.

  92. We can see in verse 8 that faith obeys.

  93. Faith obeys.

  94. By faith, Abraham obeyed

  95. when he was called to go out to a place,

  96. that he was to receive an inheritance,

  97. and he went out.

  98. We can read of this in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12:1–3

  99. verses 1 through 3,

  100. which says,

  101. Now the Lord said to Abraham,

  102. Go from your country and your kindred

  103. and your father's house

  104. to the land I will show you.

  105. And I will make of you a great nation,

  106. and I will bless you and make your name great

  107. so that you will be a blessing.

  108. I will bless those who bless you

  109. and him who dishonors you.

  110. I will curse.

  111. And in you,

  112. all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  113. And then Genesis 12 and verse 4 says,

  114. So Abram went as the Lord had told him.

  115. He went.

  116. And he went,

  117. the Greek suggests immediately.

  118. In fact,

  119. the particular tense of the Greek

  120. in Hebrews 11, 8

  121. suggests that even as God was speaking,

  122. he went.

  123. Abraham did not act and gain faith.

  124. Abraham acted because he had faith.

  125. He believed that what God said was true,

  126. and therefore he acted.

  127. It is this faith that the author of Hebrews tells us

  128. what gave Abraham his commendation

  129. in verse 2 of chapter 11.

  130. Similarly,

  131. our activity does not

  132. and could never save us,

  133. but saving faith acts.

  134. Saving faith is evidenced by activity.

  135. It is this very point that James makes

  136. when he asks the rhetorical question

  137. of James chapter 2 verse 14.

    James 2:14

  138. What good is it, my brothers,

  139. if someone says he has faith

  140. but does not have works?

  141. Can that faith save him?

  142. Saving faith is evidenced by obedience

  143. to God's commands.

  144. Not perfect obedience,

  145. as we'll see soon.

  146. None of us can claim that.

  147. But a saving faith does in fact work.

  148. Desires to follow God

  149. and to be sent by him

  150. wherever he would have us go.

  151. Faith also,

  152. and most often,

  153. costs.

  154. Faith costs.

  155. It costs us something.

  156. The last part of verse 8 says,

  157. And he went out,

  158. not knowing where he was going.

  159. It wasn't until later

  160. that Abraham's destination

  161. was revealed to him

  162. as he stood and overlooked

  163. the land of Canaan.

  164. He had no real idea

  165. where he was going,

  166. and yet he went.

  167. Abraham was willing

  168. to abandon his home

  169. for the sake

  170. of a better promise.

  171. Martin Luther wrote

  172. of Abraham's faith.

  173. It was hard to leave

  174. his native land,

  175. which it is natural

  176. for us to love.

  177. Indeed,

  178. love for the fatherland

  179. is numbered among

  180. the greatest virtues

  181. of the heathen.

  182. Furthermore,

  183. it is hard to leave friends

  184. and their companionship,

  185. but most of all,

  186. to leave relatives.

  187. And then it is clear

  188. that with his obedience of faith,

  189. Abraham gave a supreme example

  190. of an evangelical life

  191. because he loved everything

  192. and followed the Lord,

  193. preferring the word of God

  194. to everything

  195. and loving it

  196. above everything.

  197. We do not get

  198. to negotiate

  199. the terms

  200. of following God.

  201. We must come to him

  202. on his terms,

  203. by faith

  204. in Jesus Christ.

  205. But to do so

  206. without counting

  207. the costs

  208. is foolish.

  209. Faith requires

  210. our everything.

  211. If you would have God,

  212. you will have him

  213. by following

  214. the way of Jesus.

  215. And the way of Jesus

  216. was to give

  217. everything

  218. that he would

  219. please the father.

  220. Jesus says

  221. in Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8:34

  222. verse 34 and 35,

  223. If anyone would come

  224. after me,

  225. follow him,

  226. be his disciple.

  227. If anyone would come

  228. after me,

  229. let him deny himself

  230. and take up his cross

  231. and follow me.

  232. You need to read there

  233. that this idea

  234. of cross

  235. is not a momentary

  236. and light thing,

  237. but a place of death.

  238. This is the call

  239. to follow Christ,

  240. that we would die

  241. to ourselves

  242. in order that we may

  243. gain him.

  244. And then in verse 35

  245. of Mark 8,

  246. For whoever would save

  247. his life

  248. will lose it.

  249. Whoever loses his life

  250. for my sake

  251. and the gospels

  252. will save it.

  253. So faith costs.

  254. And do you find yourself

  255. trying to negotiate

  256. the terms with God?

  257. Well, God,

  258. I will give you

  259. this and such,

  260. but not

  261. this and such.

  262. I'm willing to go

  263. this far,

  264. but only this far.

  265. We must come to God

  266. on his terms.

  267. Faith also tarries.

  268. Verse 9 and 10

  269. say,

  270. By faith he went

  271. to live in the land

  272. of promise

  273. as in a foreign land,

  274. living in tents

  275. with Isaac and Jacob,

  276. heirs with him

  277. of the same promise.

  278. Abraham

  279. never took possession

  280. of the land

  281. that was promised

  282. to him.

  283. Neither did his son

  284. or his grandson.

  285. The only land

  286. that Abraham ever owned

  287. was a tomb

  288. for his wife

  289. that he purchased

  290. near Hebron.

  291. You can see that

  292. in Genesis chapter 23.

    Genesis 23 chapter mention

  293. He owned

  294. a small bit

  295. of alcove

  296. and a rock.

  297. But that was it.

  298. He didn't take

  299. any other possession

  300. of this promised land.

  301. Stephen in his

  302. wonderful sermon

  303. in Acts chapter 7

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  304. in verse 4

  305. and part of verse 5

  306. stated,

  307. Then Abraham

  308. went out

  309. from the land

  310. of the Chaldeans

  311. and lived in Haran.

  312. And after his father died,

  313. God removed him

  314. from there

  315. into this land

  316. in which you are now living.

  317. Yet he gave him

  318. no inheritance in it,

  319. not even a foot's length.

  320. Abraham

  321. was a sojourner.

  322. He and his family

  323. lived in tents.

  324. Just imagine

  325. that God made a promise

  326. to you

  327. to give you

  328. the land of

  329. California.

  330. Trying to think

  331. of a strange place

  332. for us to go.

  333. So you pack up

  334. your whole family,

  335. you leave behind

  336. all that you know

  337. and many that you love.

  338. You take a nephew

  339. with you.

  340. And you go

  341. and live

  342. amongst a strange

  343. people.

  344. This analogy

  345. is working out

  346. great now

  347. in my mind.

  348. I couldn't have

  349. written a better one.

  350. Who do not worship

  351. God

  352. that you worship,

  353. right?

  354. Who will not grant

  355. you the rights

  356. of citizenship

  357. and you dwell there

  358. until the day

  359. that you die

  360. in a tent.

  361. This is the faith

  362. of Abraham

  363. practiced.

  364. I think we look

  365. over the fact

  366. that he had

  367. no permanent

  368. dwelling place.

  369. In fact,

  370. in our reading

  371. of Genesis,

  372. he is constantly

  373. moving and being

  374. moved

  375. by others.

  376. God is faithful

  377. to him all along

  378. but never completes

  379. the promise

  380. that was made.

  381. Would you stay?

  382. Would you at some

  383. point say,

  384. God has not

  385. been faithful to me.

  386. He said he would

  387. do a thing.

  388. He's not doing it.

  389. I'm packing up

  390. and I'm headed

  391. back to Georgia.

  392. I think many of us

  393. would.

  394. Would you believe

  395. in the promise

  396. of God

  397. even when you

  398. could not see

  399. it with your

  400. own eyes?

  401. How was Abraham

  402. able to do

  403. such a thing?

  404. Our text tells us.

  405. He was looking

  406. forward,

  407. this is verse 10,

  408. to the city

  409. that has

  410. foundations,

  411. right?

  412. His tents had

  413. no foundations,

  414. dirt or grass

  415. floors.

  416. He was looking

  417. forward to the

  418. city that has

  419. foundations,

  420. whose designer

  421. and builder

  422. is God.

  423. He was looking

  424. to a permanent

  425. dwelling place,

  426. a place beyond

  427. this world.

  428. Beloved,

  429. our experience

  430. is not as

  431. unlike Abraham's

  432. as we may

  433. think.

  434. It seems that

  435. we make many

  436. efforts to keep

  437. our experience

  438. from being at

  439. all like Abraham's.

  440. We're doing

  441. lots of things

  442. to try to show

  443. our permanency

  444. here.

  445. But the truth

  446. is simply

  447. this.

  448. We are

  449. sojourners

  450. and we are

  451. exiles

  452. and our

  453. faith must

  454. tarry.

  455. There's many

  456. promises that

  457. God has made

  458. for us

  459. that are going

  460. to be past

  461. this life.

  462. The greatest

  463. promises that

  464. God has made

  465. for us are

  466. past this

  467. life.

  468. Our faith

  469. must

  470. tarry.

  471. It must

  472. endure.

  473. We are

  474. sustained

  475. here in

  476. temporal

  477. dwellings

  478. by faith

  479. in a future

  480. city.

  481. A city

  482. that has

  483. foundations.

  484. A city

  485. that is

  486. built

  487. and designed

  488. by God.

  489. Paul writes

  490. in Philippians

    Philippians 3:20

  491. chapter 3

  492. verse 20

  493. Our citizenship

  494. is in heaven

  495. and from it

  496. we await

  497. a Savior

  498. the Lord

  499. Jesus Christ.

  500. This place

  501. is not

  502. our home.

  503. And in a few

  504. months we will

  505. study Hebrews

    Hebrews 13:14

  506. chapter 13

  507. verse 14

  508. which states

  509. for here

  510. we have

  511. no lasting

  512. city

  513. but we

  514. seek

  515. the city

  516. that is

  517. to come.

  518. So Abraham

  519. and his

  520. family

  521. express for

  522. us this

  523. wonderful

  524. paramount

  525. faith

  526. in the

  527. promised

  528. land.

  529. And we

  530. can see

  531. that it

  532. means so

  533. much more

  534. than just

  535. the promise

  536. of Canaan.

  537. It means a

  538. permanent

  539. place

  540. that we

  541. will dwell

  542. with God

  543. forever.

  544. Secondly

  545. Abraham and

  546. his family

  547. had faith

  548. in the

  549. promised

  550. son.

  551. Faith

  552. in the

  553. promised

  554. son.

  555. In verse

  556. 11 we

  557. can see

  558. that by

  559. faith

  560. Sarah

  561. herself

  562. received

  563. power

  564. to conceive

  565. even

  566. when she

  567. was past

  568. the age

  569. since she

  570. considered

  571. him faithful

  572. who had

  573. promised.

  574. So faith

  575. is

  576. certain.

  577. There is

  578. a

  579. certitude

  580. to

  581. faith.

  582. Sarah

  583. was most

  584. likely

  585. 91

  586. years

  587. old

  588. when she

  589. gave

  590. birth

  591. to

  592. Isaac.

  593. His

  594. conception

  595. full-term

  596. gestation

  597. and

  598. healthy

  599. delivery

  600. let me

  601. remind you

  602. in a

  603. tent

  604. were not

  605. only

  606. improbable

  607. but

  608. impossible

  609. in human

  610. terms.

  611. However

  612. Abraham and

  613. Sarah

  614. weighed

  615. the human

  616. impossibility

  617. of having

  618. a son

  619. against

  620. the divine

  621. impossibility

  622. that God

  623. would not

  624. be true

  625. to his

  626. word

  627. and they

  628. believed

  629. him.

  630. We put

  631. those two

  632. things on

  633. a scale

  634. together

  635. and God

  636. not being

  637. a liar

  638. highly

  639. outweighs

  640. any of

  641. our

  642. conception

  643. of what

  644. he has

  645. promised

  646. to accomplish.

  647. Thomas

  648. Watson

  649. Puritan

  650. once wrote

  651. this is on

  652. your bulletin

  653. where reason

  654. cannot

  655. wade

  656. their

  657. faith

  658. may

  659. swim.

  660. The author

  661. of Hebrews

  662. tells us

  663. in chapter

  664. 11

  665. verse

  666. 6

  667. without

  668. faith

  669. it is

  670. impossible

  671. to

  672. please

  673. him

  674. for

  675. whoever

  676. would

  677. draw

  678. near

  679. to

  680. God

  681. must

  682. believe

  683. that

  684. he

  685. exists

  686. and

  687. that

  688. he

  689. rewards

  690. those

  691. who

  692. seek

  693. him.

  694. Abraham

  695. and

  696. Sarah

  697. believed

  698. in the

  699. promise

  700. of God

  701. and

  702. they

  703. had

  704. a

  705. son.

  706. But

  707. allow

  708. me

  709. to be

  710. of

  711. encouragement

  712. to

  713. you

  714. this

  715. morning.

  716. The

  717. faith

  718. of

  719. Abraham

  720. and

  721. Sarah

  722. was

  723. not

  724. a

  725. perfect

  726. faith.

  727. We

  728. read

  729. of

  730. the

  731. birth

  732. of

  733. Isaac

  734. in

  735. Genesis

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  736. chapter

  737. 21

  738. but

  739. before

  740. that

  741. in

  742. Genesis

    Genesis 16:1

  743. chapter

  744. 16

  745. verse

  746. 1

  747. and

  748. following

  749. we

  750. read

  751. now

  752. Sarah

  753. Abraham's

  754. wife

  755. excuse me

  756. Abram's

  757. wife

  758. they're

  759. getting

  760. new

  761. names

  762. soon

  763. had

  764. born

  765. him

  766. no

  767. children

  768. she's

  769. not

  770. believing

  771. the

  772. promise

  773. she

  774. had

  775. born

  776. him

  777. no

  778. children

  779. she

  780. had

  781. a

  782. female

  783. Egyptian

  784. servant

  785. whose

  786. name

  787. was

  788. Hagar

  789. and

  790. Sarah

  791. said

  792. to

  793. Abram

  794. behold

  795. me

  796. from

  797. bearing

  798. children

  799. go

  800. into

  801. my

  802. servant

  803. it

  804. may

  805. be

  806. that

  807. I

  808. shall

  809. obtain

  810. children

  811. by

  812. her

  813. and

  814. Abram

  815. listened

  816. to the

  817. voice

  818. of

  819. Sarah

  820. so

  821. after

  822. Abram

  823. had

  824. lived

  825. in

  826. ten

  827. years

  828. in

  829. the

  830. land

  831. of

  832. Canaan

  833. Sarah

  834. Abram's

  835. wife

  836. took

  837. Hagar

  838. the

  839. Egyptian

  840. her

  841. servant

  842. and

  843. gave

  844. her

  845. to

  846. Abram

  847. her

  848. husband

  849. as

  850. a

  851. wife

  852. I'll

  853. encourage

  854. you to

  855. read

  856. that

  857. chapter

  858. all

  859. kinds

  860. of

  861. things

  862. happen

  863. that

  864. are

  865. not

  866. favorable

  867. because

  868. of

  869. the

  870. unfaithfulness

  871. of

  872. Sarah

  873. and

  874. Abraham

  875. later

  876. we can

  877. read

  878. in

  879. Genesis

    Genesis 18:11

  880. chapter

  881. 18

  882. verse

  883. 11

  884. and

  885. following

  886. now

  887. Abraham

  888. and

  889. Sarah

  890. were

  891. old

  892. advanced

  893. in

  894. years

  895. the

  896. way

  897. of

  898. women

  899. had

  900. ceased

  901. to be

  902. with

  903. Sarah

  904. this

  905. is

  906. this

  907. is

  908. a

  909. funny

  910. episode

  911. in

  912. the

  913. book

  914. of

  915. Genesis

  916. so

  917. Sarah

  918. laughed

  919. to

  920. herself

  921. saying

  922. after

  923. I

  924. am

  925. worn

  926. out

  927. and

  928. my

  929. Lord

  930. is

  931. old

  932. shall

  933. I

  934. have

  935. pleasure

  936. that's

  937. funny

  938. maybe

  939. when you

  940. get

  941. older

  942. you'll

  943. get

  944. it

  945. the

  946. Lord

  947. said

  948. to

  949. Abraham

  950. why

  951. did

  952. Sarah

  953. laugh

  954. and

  955. say

  956. shall

  957. I

  958. indeed

  959. bear

  960. a

  961. child

  962. now

  963. that

  964. I

  965. am

  966. old

  967. is

  968. anything

  969. too

  970. hard

  971. for

  972. the

  973. Lord

  974. at

  975. the

  976. point

  977. in

  978. time

  979. I

  980. will

  981. return

  982. to

  983. you

  984. about

  985. this

  986. time

  987. next

  988. year

  989. and

  990. Sarah

  991. shall

  992. have

  993. a

  994. son

  995. those

  996. chapters

  997. are

  998. riddled

  999. with

  1000. doubt

  1001. as a

  1002. side

  1003. note

  1004. some

  1005. people

  1006. use

  1007. this

  1008. little

  1009. bit

  1010. of

  1011. Sarah

  1012. laughing

  1013. as a

  1014. context

  1015. for

  1016. something

  1017. called

  1018. holy

  1019. laughter

  1020. you

  1021. need

  1022. to

  1023. ignore

  1024. that

  1025. this

  1026. was

  1027. not

  1028. holy

  1029. at

  1030. all

  1031. right

  1032. this

  1033. was

  1034. Sarah

  1035. doubting

  1036. fully

  1037. doubting

  1038. that

  1039. God

  1040. would

  1041. do

  1042. what

  1043. he

  1044. had

  1045. said

  1046. that

  1047. he

  1048. would

  1049. do

  1050. and

  1051. can

  1052. we

  1053. blame

  1054. them

  1055. they

  1056. they've

  1057. been

  1058. in

  1059. the

  1060. land

  1061. quite

  1062. some

  1063. time

  1064. now

  1065. the

  1066. promise

  1067. doesn't

  1068. seem

  1069. like

  1070. it's

  1071. coming

  1072. to

  1073. pass

  1074. right

  1075. they're

  1076. waiting

  1077. and

  1078. they

  1079. are

  1080. waiting

  1081. I'm

  1082. astounded

  1083. in my

  1084. reading

  1085. of the

  1086. Old Testament

  1087. at how

  1088. impatient

  1089. I am

  1090. as God

  1091. works out

  1092. his

  1093. faithfulness

  1094. with

  1095. his

  1096. people

  1097. I

  1098. kind of

  1099. snap

  1100. my

  1101. fingers

  1102. and see

  1103. things

  1104. happen

  1105. I

  1106. don't

  1107. want

  1108. to

  1109. wait

  1110. 10

  1111. years

  1112. 40

  1113. years

  1114. to see

  1115. promises

  1116. come

  1117. to

  1118. pass

  1119. I

  1120. don't

  1121. really

  1122. want

  1123. to

  1124. wait

  1125. for

  1126. promises

  1127. to

  1128. come

  1129. to

  1130. pass

  1131. after

  1132. I

  1133. pass

  1134. the

  1135. faith

  1136. of

  1137. Abraham

  1138. and

  1139. Sarah

  1140. was

  1141. not

  1142. perfect

  1143. faith

  1144. but

  1145. it

  1146. was

  1147. sufficient

  1148. faith

  1149. this

  1150. text

  1151. reminds

  1152. me

  1153. of

  1154. the

  1155. father

  1156. of

  1157. the

  1158. demon

  1159. possessed

  1160. son

  1161. who

  1162. says

  1163. to

  1164. Jesus

  1165. in

  1166. Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  1167. chapter

  1168. 9

  1169. and

  1170. verse

  1171. 22

  1172. and

  1173. following

  1174. if

  1175. you

  1176. can

  1177. do

  1178. anything

  1179. have

  1180. compassion

  1181. on

  1182. us

  1183. and

  1184. help

  1185. us

  1186. and

  1187. in

  1188. verse

  1189. 23

  1190. Jesus

  1191. said

  1192. to

  1193. him

  1194. if

  1195. you

  1196. can

  1197. all

  1198. things

  1199. are

  1200. possible

  1201. for

  1202. one

  1203. who

  1204. believes

  1205. and

  1206. then

  1207. in

  1208. verse

  1209. 24

  1210. immediately

  1211. the

  1212. father

  1213. of

  1214. the

  1215. child

  1216. cried

  1217. out

  1218. and

  1219. said

  1220. I

  1221. believe

  1222. help

  1223. my

  1224. unbelief

  1225. I

  1226. feel

  1227. that

  1228. way

  1229. often

  1230. you

  1231. may

  1232. find

  1233. yourself

  1234. with

  1235. faltering

  1236. faith

  1237. this

  1238. morning

  1239. find

  1240. solidarity

  1241. in the

  1242. life

  1243. of

  1244. Abraham

  1245. and

  1246. Sarah

  1247. find

  1248. solidarity

  1249. with

  1250. every

  1251. Christ

  1252. follower

  1253. in

  1254. my

  1255. hearing

  1256. and

  1257. know

  1258. that

  1259. God

  1260. is

  1261. abundantly

  1262. merciful

  1263. and

  1264. a

  1265. steadfast

  1266. love

  1267. endures

  1268. forever

  1269. be

  1270. comforted

  1271. this

  1272. morning

  1273. with a

  1274. text

  1275. like

  1276. Isaiah

    Isaiah 42:3

  1277. chapter

  1278. 42

  1279. verse

  1280. 3

  1281. a

  1282. bruised

  1283. reed

  1284. he

  1285. will

  1286. not

  1287. break

  1288. and

  1289. a

  1290. faintly

  1291. !

  1292. burning

  1293. wick

  1294. he

  1295. will

  1296. not

  1297. quench

  1298. !

  1299. do

  1300. do

  1301. you

  1302. feel

  1303. like

  1304. your

  1305. flame

  1306. is

  1307. just

  1308. about

  1309. to

  1310. go

  1311. out

  1312. this

  1313. morning

  1314. if

  1315. you

  1316. are

  1317. God's

  1318. in

  1319. Christ

  1320. what

  1321. I

  1322. can

  1323. promise

  1324. you

  1325. is

  1326. that

  1327. he

  1328. will

  1329. fan

  1330. it

  1331. back

  1332. into

  1333. flame

  1334. be

  1335. encouraged

  1336. God

  1337. does not

  1338. expect of

  1339. us

  1340. a

  1341. perfect

  1342. faith

  1343. but a

  1344. sufficient

  1345. faith

  1346. so

  1347. faith is

  1348. certain

  1349. or

  1350. maybe one

  1351. should say

  1352. in time

  1353. finds

  1354. certitude

  1355. and

  1356. faith

  1357. is

  1358. rewarded

  1359. verse 12

  1360. therefore

  1361. from one

  1362. man

  1363. and him

  1364. as good

  1365. as dead

  1366. I like

  1367. that

  1368. interjection

  1369. there

  1370. Abraham

  1371. was quite

  1372. old

  1373. at the time

  1374. they conceived

  1375. were born

  1376. descendants

  1377. as many

  1378. as the

  1379. stars

  1380. of heaven

  1381. and as

  1382. many

  1383. as the

  1384. innumerable

  1385. grains

  1386. of sand

  1387. by the

  1388. seashore

  1389. beloved

  1390. that's

  1391. us

  1392. in part

  1393. we are

  1394. counted

  1395. amongst

  1396. those

  1397. many

  1398. that by

  1399. faith

  1400. are

  1401. grafted

  1402. in

  1403. to the

  1404. family

  1405. of God

  1406. I want to

  1407. read to you

  1408. just briefly

  1409. Kent Hughes

  1410. commentary

  1411. on this

  1412. he wrote

  1413. this

  1414. I just

  1415. thought

  1416. this was

  1417. a

  1418. great

  1419. insertion

  1420. here

  1421. he wrote

  1422. George

  1423. Sweeting

  1424. a past

  1425. president

  1426. of Moody

  1427. Bible

  1428. Institute

  1429. once gave

  1430. this

  1431. memorable

  1432. definition

  1433. of

  1434. optimism

  1435. he said

  1436. optimism

  1437. is when

  1438. an 85

  1439. year old

  1440. man

  1441. marries

  1442. a 35

  1443. year old

  1444. woman

  1445. and moves

  1446. into a

  1447. 12 room

  1448. house

  1449. next to

  1450. an

  1451. elementary

  1452. school

  1453. inappropriate

  1454. but you

  1455. get his

  1456. point

  1457. but I

  1458. have a

  1459. better

  1460. definition

  1461. for him

  1462. optimism

  1463. is when

  1464. a 90

  1465. year old

  1466. man

  1467. and his

  1468. 90

  1469. year old

  1470. bride

  1471. hear God

  1472. say

  1473. they're going

  1474. to be

  1475. parents

  1476. and believe

  1477. their offspring

  1478. will fill

  1479. not a

  1480. schoolhouse

  1481. but the

  1482. whole

  1483. earth

  1484. that they

  1485. will be

  1486. as many

  1487. as the

  1488. stars

  1489. of heaven

  1490. and as

  1491. many

  1492. as the

  1493. innumerable

  1494. grains

  1495. of sand

  1496. by the

  1497. seashore

  1498. praise God

  1499. that now

  1500. Abraham and

  1501. Sarah

  1502. in glory

  1503. with God

  1504. can see the

  1505. promise

  1506. fulfilled

  1507. and being

  1508. fulfilled

  1509. and it

  1510. started by

  1511. their faith

  1512. in the

  1513. promised

  1514. son

  1515. faith

  1516. and

  1517. faith

  1518. perseveres

  1519. to the

  1520. end

  1521. faith

  1522. perseveres

  1523. to the

  1524. end

  1525. verse 13

  1526. these

  1527. all died

  1528. in

  1529. faith

  1530. not having

  1531. received the

  1532. things promised

  1533. but having

  1534. seen them

  1535. and greeted

  1536. them from

  1537. afar

  1538. and having

  1539. acknowledged

  1540. that they

  1541. were strangers

  1542. and exiles

  1543. on the

  1544. earth

  1545. that is to

  1546. say

  1547. these all

  1548. died

  1549. in faith

  1550. Abraham

  1551. Sarah

  1552. Isaac

  1553. and Jacob

  1554. all

  1555. finished

  1556. well

  1557. they

  1558. persevered

  1559. in faith

  1560. to the

  1561. end

  1562. and not

  1563. only did

  1564. they finish

  1565. well

  1566. but they

  1567. lived

  1568. well

  1569. how

  1570. how did

  1571. they live

  1572. and finish

  1573. by

  1574. faith

  1575. the text

  1576. tells us

  1577. verse 14

  1578. for people

  1579. who speak

  1580. thus

  1581. acknowledging

  1582. is what he's

  1583. talking about

  1584. acknowledging

  1585. that they're

  1586. strangers

  1587. and exiles

  1588. acknowledging

  1589. that this

  1590. place is

  1591. not our

  1592. home

  1593. acknowledging

  1594. that there

  1595. are

  1596. promises

  1597. for us

  1598. that are

  1599. beyond

  1600. this

  1601. place

  1602. people

  1603. who speak

  1604. like

  1605. that

  1606. make it

  1607. clear

  1608. that they

  1609. are seeking

  1610. a homeland

  1611. beloved

  1612. this world

  1613. is not

  1614. our home

  1615. we

  1616. persevere

  1617. by faith

  1618. in recognizing

  1619. that

  1620. in knowing

  1621. this is not

  1622. where we

  1623. belong

  1624. there's a

  1625. new place

  1626. being made

  1627. for us

  1628. to dwell

  1629. with God

  1630. forever

  1631. verse 15

  1632. if they had

  1633. been thinking

  1634. of that land

  1635. from which

  1636. they had

  1637. gone out

  1638. they would

  1639. have had

  1640. opportunity

  1641. to return

  1642. but as it

  1643. is

  1644. they desire

  1645. a better

  1646. country

  1647. that is

  1648. a heavenly

  1649. one

  1650. therefore

  1651. God is not

  1652. ashamed

  1653. to be called

  1654. their God

  1655. for he has

  1656. prepared for

  1657. them

  1658. a city

  1659. they looked

  1660. to the

  1661. promise

  1662. they looked

  1663. to the

  1664. future

  1665. reward

  1666. they knew

  1667. that the

  1668. promised

  1669. inheritance

  1670. was sure

  1671. and they

  1672. ran

  1673. with endurance

  1674. the race

  1675. that was set

  1676. before them

  1677. we are asked

  1678. to do the

  1679. very same

  1680. thing

  1681. as we

  1682. live

  1683. in a

  1684. place

  1685. that is

  1686. uncomfortable

  1687. and growing

  1688. in discomfort

  1689. right

  1690. this is not

  1691. our home

  1692. beloved

  1693. right

  1694. we are

  1695. strangers

  1696. and we

  1697. are

  1698. exiles

  1699. and God

  1700. is preparing

  1701. for us

  1702. a city

  1703. and so in

  1704. these few

  1705. verses this

  1706. morning we

  1707. see faith

  1708. in the

  1709. promised

  1710. land

  1711. and that

  1712. faith

  1713. obeys

  1714. that it

  1715. costs

  1716. something

  1717. that it

  1718. tarries

  1719. faith in

  1720. the promised

  1721. son

  1722. that faith

  1723. finds its

  1724. certitude

  1725. and that

  1726. is rewarded

  1727. and that

  1728. faith

  1729. saving

  1730. faith

  1731. perseveres

  1732. to the

  1733. end

  1734. the author

  1735. of Hebrews

  1736. was charging

  1737. his original

  1738. readers

  1739. and the

  1740. Lord is

  1741. using his

  1742. pen to

  1743. charge us

  1744. today to

  1745. take up

  1746. the example

  1747. of Abraham

  1748. and his

  1749. family

  1750. in closing

  1751. listen to the

  1752. remarks of

  1753. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1754. chapter 12

  1755. and verse

  1756. 1

  1757. therefore

  1758. since we

  1759. are surrounded

  1760. by so great

  1761. a cloud

  1762. of witnesses

  1763. let us also

  1764. lay aside

  1765. every weight

  1766. and sin

  1767. which clings

  1768. so closely

  1769. and let us

  1770. run with

  1771. endurance

  1772. the race

  1773. that is set

  1774. before us

  1775. let's pray

  1776. together
