  1. This morning's text is Hebrews chapter 11 verses 17 through 22, where we will observe once again the faith of Abraham and his descendants.

    Hebrews 11:17–22

  2. !

  3. Do you ever feel that way?

  4. Do you ever think, why are we spending so much time in one book and therefore on one theme?

  5. This feeling was punctuated by my nine-year-old Cade, who asked me last night,

  6. Dad, are you preaching from Hebrews tomorrow?

  7. And when I responded, yeah, he said, oh, in a slightly disappointed voice.

  8. So I wanted to understand that, and I probed further, and I pressed a bit,

  9. and he told me that it feels like he can only remember us ever studying the book of Hebrews.

  10. I asked him what he thought the book of Hebrews is supposed to teach us,

  11. and his stumbling with an answer, although he didn't totally miss the point,

  12. but he stumbled around to answer me, reminded me why long expositions can be of some value to the church.

  13. Now, most of us are not nine, but then I thought about my week, and I thought about likely your week,

  14. and considered how many opportunities were presented to us to not persevere by faith,

  15. to grow cold and listless, to forget the glorious truth of the supremacy of Jesus Christ,

  16. to forget that we who are in Christ were once desperately lost, but now have been found,

  17. to forget and to think, right, all the pleasures the world has to offer us are temporal and fleeting,

  18. but we have an eternal reward in Jesus.

  19. We should not grow tired of learning the lesson of Hebrews, because we are always in need of it.

  20. The ESV Study Bible Introduction to Hebrews defines the book's theme this way,

  21. Christ is greater than any angel, priest, or old covenant institution.

  22. Thus, each reader, rather than leaving such a great salvation,

  23. is summoned to hold on by faith to the true rest found in Christ,

  24. and to encourage others in the church to persevere.

  25. And I will give you a bit shorter version, and then we will get to work.

  26. Followers of Jesus Christ need to persevere by faith in the absolute supremacy of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  27. So Hebrews chapter 11, beginning in verse 17,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  28. Beloved, this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  29. We would all do well to listen to it, in order to believe its promises, and to obey its commands.

  30. By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac.

  31. And he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son,

  32. of whom it was said, through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  33. He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead,

  34. from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.

  35. By faith Isaac invoked future blessings on Jacob and Esau.

  36. By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph,

  37. bowing in worship over the head of his staff.

  38. By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites,

  39. and gave directions concerning his bones.

  40. So this morning, a very simple outline for our text.

  41. Number one, Abraham's legendary faith.

  42. And number two, Abraham's legacy of faith.

  43. And then finally, I'll ask us some questions concerning our faith.

  44. So Abraham's legendary faith, Abraham's legacy of faith.

  45. And then I'll ask some questions concerning our faith.

  46. So number one, Abraham's legendary faith.

  47. We're going to break this down into some pieces as we kind of walk through a bit of this story.

  48. And I want to read much of it to you from Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  49. The author of Hebrews is not trying to make a very complex point.

  50. It's a simple point that he's making.

  51. It's just a point that must be worked out in our lives.

  52. And he's using the life of Abraham, particularly this episode,

  53. to show us this very thing.

  54. So we can see first, at the beginning of verse 17, the calling of faith to Abraham.

  55. God asked something of him.

  56. Asked him to do a very difficult something.

  57. Beginning of verse 17 says,

  58. By faith Abraham, when he was tested.

  59. So if you will, keep your finger marking Hebrews chapter 11,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  60. but turn with me to Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  61. And we'll pick up and read a bit of it and jump back into Hebrews and back and forth just a tad this morning.

  62. So we see first the testing of Abraham's faith.

  63. God is saying,

  64. Do you really believe?

  65. I've made a promise.

  66. Do you really believe that I will bring the promise to pass?

  67. Genesis chapter 22, beginning in verse 1.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  68. God tested Abraham and said to him,

  69. Abraham, and he said,

  70. Here I am.

  71. He said,

  72. Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

  73. and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  74. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey,

  75. and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  76. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.

  77. Now, I think that we too quickly read these stories.

  78. I don't know that we often really take the time to have some imagination for what it must have been like.

  79. The overarching point of what the author of Hebrews is talking about here is the promise being fulfilled in Isaac.

  80. It was said of him,

  81. Through Isaac, your offspring will be named.

  82. This is the large idea that he's speaking about here.

  83. But just imagine for a moment,

  84. God asking you to take your son, your only son,

  85. the son that you love,

  86. and offer him as a sacrifice.

  87. I have sons.

  88. And it is difficult to imagine what it must have been like for Abraham.

  89. He's very eager, we see.

  90. Genesis chapter 22 and verse 1, right?

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  91. God says to him,

  92. Abraham, and he says,

  93. Here I am.

  94. And we don't get any clue as to the emotions that he's feeling following that,

  95. but I have to imagine he's not nearly as eager as he's told what he is to do.

  96. Travel to a place and offer your son as a sacrifice.

  97. But we see that he goes, right?

  98. He rises in the morning, saddles his donkey,

  99. takes young men and his son.

  100. He even does the proper preparation to go and to be obedient for this great sacrifice.

  101. As we read on, we can see the journeying faith of Abraham.

  102. This isn't a short trip that he takes.

  103. We read on in verse 4,

  104. On the third day,

  105. Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

  106. Then Abraham said to his young men,

  107. Stay here with the donkey.

  108. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  109. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  110. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

  111. And so they went both of them together.

  112. And Isaac said to his father, Abraham,

  113. My father.

  114. And he said,

  115. Here I am, my son.

  116. He said,

  117. Behold the fire and the wood,

  118. but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  119. Abraham said,

  120. God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  121. So they went both of them together.

  122. So again, imagine for a moment what the Lord was asking of Abraham.

  123. They traveled.

  124. They went on a journey.

  125. And they did this with time.

  126. And he has not yet informed his son of what's going to happen at this.

  127. Can you just imagine?

  128. What are they going to do to make a sacrifice?

  129. He's aware of this, Isaac is,

  130. because he asked the question.

  131. I see the supplies except for the lamb.

  132. And the type of faith it must have taken.

  133. The type of perseverance in the promise of God

  134. to travel this distance,

  135. knowing what was coming at the end of that journey.

  136. And then we see the sacrificing faith of Abraham.

  137. We begin in verse 9.

  138. When they came to the place of which God had told him,

  139. Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order

  140. and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  141. Now we don't know exactly the age of Isaac.

  142. There's much guess to this.

  143. I'm going to tend toward him being younger

  144. because of kind of the naivety of his questions in the previous verses.

  145. But surely he was faster than his dad.

  146. His dad was getting extremely old at this point.

  147. So Isaac seems to be a willing participant,

  148. trusting in his father,

  149. even as he's laying him on an altar to be burned.

  150. Verse 10.

  151. Then Abraham reached out his hand

  152. and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  153. And I have a hard time reading that

  154. and not shuddering at the thought,

  155. the measure of faith,

  156. to say, right,

  157. this is the Lord's will,

  158. that I would sacrifice my son

  159. and I'm believing in the promise.

  160. So when you look in Hebrews 11, 17 and 18,

  161. it says,

  162. There was a specific promise

  163. that it was through this son,

  164. this son that he is now raising the dagger

  165. in order to slaughter,

  166. that all these promises of God

  167. would come to pass.

  168. It defies logic,

  169. natural reasoning.

  170. It makes no sense whatsoever.

  171. And yet,

  172. he is willing to act.

  173. Not willy-nilly,

  174. but because of what the Lord had said.

  175. So we see him here at the end of verse 10,

  176. ready.

  177. He's taking the knife.

  178. He's ready to slaughter his son.

  179. And in verse 11,

  180. But the angel of the Lord

  181. called to him from heaven and said,

  182. Abraham, Abraham.

  183. And he said,

  184. I imagine eagerly,

  185. Here I am.

  186. He said, the angel,

  187. Do not lay your hand on the boy

  188. or do anything to him.

  189. For now I know that you fear God.

  190. Seeing you have not withheld your son,

  191. your only son,

  192. from me.

  193. Proving of his faith.

  194. And Abraham lifted up his eyes

  195. and looked,

  196. and behold,

  197. behind him was a ram

  198. caught in a thicket by his thorns.

  199. And Abraham went and took the ram

  200. and offered it up

  201. as a burnt offering

  202. instead of his son.

  203. So Abraham called the name of that place.

  204. The Lord will provide.

  205. As it is said to this day,

  206. on the mount of the Lord,

  207. it shall be provided.

  208. This is an astounding picture.

  209. And the author of Hebrews

  210. places this in Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  211. as an encouragement to us

  212. to persevere in faith.

  213. Don't miss that.

  214. Don't lose that.

  215. We are meant to also believe

  216. in the promises of God.

  217. God likely won't.

  218. I highly doubt.

  219. He's going to ask you

  220. to offer your son.

  221. We should have a good conversation

  222. if you think or are convinced

  223. that he's doing so.

  224. I'd have words for you.

  225. But he's going to ask us

  226. to do things

  227. that are weighty

  228. and are sacrificial,

  229. believing in his promises.

  230. So how is it

  231. that Abraham was able

  232. to have such faith?

  233. It's given to him

  234. as a gift from the Lord.

  235. But it's not an unreasoning faith.

  236. It's a reasoning faith.

  237. And we see this back

  238. in Hebrews chapter 11

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  239. and verse 19.

  240. We see that Abraham

  241. considered

  242. his reasoning.

  243. He's thinking this through.

  244. He's given a command.

  245. He's traveling a distance.

  246. He's got to be in turmoil over it.

  247. But wait a second.

  248. God made a promise.

  249. He made a promise

  250. to bless all the nations.

  251. He made a promise

  252. that my descendants

  253. would be as many as the stars.

  254. He made a promise

  255. that it would happen

  256. through Isaac.

  257. How does this make sense?

  258. He considered

  259. that God was able

  260. even to raise him

  261. from the dead.

  262. He knew

  263. that God would be sure

  264. to his promise.

  265. He knew somehow

  266. God is going to work this through.

  267. And certainly,

  268. God did.

  269. Instead of having him

  270. sacrifice Isaac,

  271. which he certainly could have

  272. raised from the dead,

  273. he provides

  274. an alternate sacrifice

  275. in the form

  276. of a ram.

  277. And the author says,

  278. from which,

  279. figuratively speaking,

  280. he did receive him back.

  281. Isaac was as good

  282. as dead

  283. to Abraham.

  284. He had come to the place

  285. where he was willing

  286. to sacrifice

  287. his own son

  288. in obedience

  289. to God.

  290. And he did,

  291. in fact,

  292. receive him back,

  293. figuratively,

  294. from the dead.

  295. Abraham's reasoning

  296. was audacious.

  297. It was audacious.

  298. But it went something

  299. like this.

  300. God promised to make

  301. of me

  302. a great nation.

  303. Therefore,

  304. he gave me

  305. a son

  306. when I was

  307. as good as dead.

  308. Far too old

  309. to father a son,

  310. and my wife Sarah

  311. far too old

  312. to mother.

  313. Therefore,

  314. God has now

  315. asked me

  316. to sacrifice

  317. my son

  318. the only

  319. reasonable way

  320. that God

  321. can fulfill

  322. his promise.

  323. Therefore,

  324. God is not a liar,

  325. and God

  326. will make

  327. a way

  328. to keep

  329. his promise.

  330. What faith.

  331. What astounding

  332. faith

  333. in God's

  334. spoken

  335. word.

  336. God has said it.

  337. It will come

  338. to pass.

  339. God promised it.

  340. Therefore,

  341. I believe it.

  342. This is the type

  343. of faith

  344. that we are

  345. asked to have

  346. in our God.

  347. This is the type

  348. of faith

  349. that the author

  350. of Hebrews

  351. is encouraging

  352. and encouraging

  353. and encouraging

  354. and encouraging.

  355. Did you have

  356. that kind of faith

  357. in this past

  358. week?

  359. Did God

  360. ask you

  361. to do anything

  362. that was

  363. difficult

  364. but consistent

  365. with his promises

  366. that you failed

  367. to do?

  368. You just said,

  369. I just don't

  370. believe the promise.

  371. Functionally,

  372. I'm not so sure.

  373. Cognitively,

  374. I ascend

  375. to these promises,

  376. but functionally,

  377. eh.

  378. And as a result

  379. of Abraham's

  380. faithfulness,

  381. God restates

  382. the promises

  383. of his covenant

  384. with Abraham

  385. and with his

  386. descendants.

  387. He says again,

  388. lest anyone

  389. forget in the

  390. reading of this

  391. story,

  392. the promise

  393. that came

  394. and is coming.

  395. Verse 15

  396. down through 18

  397. of Genesis 22.

  398. And the angel

  399. of the Lord

  400. called to Abraham

  401. a second time

  402. from heaven

  403. and said,

  404. By myself

  405. I have sworn,

  406. declares the Lord.

  407. Because you have

  408. done this

  409. and have not

  410. withheld your son,

  411. your only son,

  412. I will surely

  413. bless you

  414. and I will surely

  415. multiply your offspring

  416. as the stars

  417. of heaven

  418. and as the sand

  419. that is on the seashore.

  420. And your offspring

  421. shall possess

  422. the gate

  423. of his enemies.

  424. And in your offspring

  425. shall all the nations

  426. of the earth

  427. be blessed

  428. because you

  429. have obeyed

  430. my voice.

  431. Abraham's

  432. faithfulness,

  433. his willingness

  434. to sacrifice

  435. his only son,

  436. because of God's

  437. promise to him

  438. made possible

  439. another son,

  440. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  441. His willingness

  442. to sacrifice

  443. his son

  444. prefigures

  445. God the Father

  446. sacrificing

  447. his only son,

  448. actually sacrificing

  449. his only son,

  450. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  451. that all the promises

  452. of the Abrahamic covenant

  453. would be fulfilled.

  454. And they are

  455. being fulfilled

  456. to this day.

  457. It's an astounding

  458. faith.

  459. So Abraham

  460. has this

  461. legendary

  462. faith,

  463. but he also has

  464. a legacy

  465. of faith.

  466. And the author

  467. of Hebrews

  468. gives that to us

  469. kind of in rapid

  470. succession

  471. in the next

  472. three verses

  473. 20,

  474. 21,

  475. and 22.

  476. We won't spend

  477. much time on these

  478. at all,

  479. although we could

  480. spend a whole week

  481. on each and every

  482. one of them.

  483. But we want to get

  484. to the beginning

  485. of chapter 12

  486. at some point,

  487. don't we?

  488. So first,

  489. Isaac's faith.

  490. Verse 20,

  491. By faith,

  492. Isaac invoked

  493. future blessings

  494. on Jacob

  495. and Esau.

  496. The story of Isaac's

  497. blessing of his sons

  498. is quite the debacle.

  499. I'll encourage you

  500. to read it from

  501. Genesis chapter 27,

    Genesis 27 chapter mention

  502. the whole chapter,

  503. and through the

  504. beginning of chapter

  505. 20,

  506. but the point is,

  507. the point that the

  508. author of Hebrews

  509. is making is that

  510. he believed

  511. that the blessings

  512. given to his sons,

  513. particularly the

  514. blessing of Jacob,

  515. would come to be

  516. realized.

  517. The continuing

  518. blessing of the

  519. promise to Abraham.

  520. All that was said

  521. would come to pass

  522. through this lineage

  523. of Jacob.

  524. So we see this

  525. example of Isaac's

  526. faith.

  527. We also see the

  528. example of Jacob's

  529. faith.

  530. Verse 21,

  531. By faith,

  532. Jacob,

  533. when dying,

  534. blessed each

  535. of the sons of

  536. Joseph,

  537. bowing in worship

  538. over the head

  539. of his staff.

  540. So when Jacob

  541. was very old,

  542. the sons of

  543. Joseph were

  544. brought to him.

  545. And when Jacob's

  546. sons came to be

  547. blessed,

  548. excuse me,

  549. Joseph's sons

  550. came to be

  551. blessed,

  552. the older brother

  553. Manasseh was

  554. placed on his

  555. right hand to

  556. receive the

  557. greater blessing,

  558. the younger

  559. brother,

  560. Ephraim,

  561. on his left,

  562. or Ephraim.

  563. But Jacob,

  564. responding to

  565. the direction of

  566. God,

  567. crossed his

  568. hands and

  569. gave the

  570. greater blessing

  571. to Ephraim.

  572. Right?

  573. He believed

  574. what God

  575. said.

  576. Against the

  577. tradition of

  578. giving the

  579. greatest blessing

  580. to the

  581. eldest son,

  582. he instead

  583. gave it to

  584. the next

  585. in order.

  586. We also

  587. see the

  588. example of

  589. Joseph's

  590. faith.

  591. Verse 22,

  592. By faith,

  593. Joseph,

  594. at the end

  595. of his

  596. life,

  597. made mention

  598. of the

  599. exodus of

  600. the Israelites

  601. and gave

  602. directions

  603. concerning his

  604. bones.

  605. Joseph was

  606. confident that

  607. nothing could

  608. thwart God's

  609. promise that

  610. his people

  611. would possess

  612. the land

  613. of Canaan.

  614. He believed

  615. in the

  616. Abrahamic

  617. covenant.

  618. He had once

  619. dwelt in

  620. that land

  621. and had

  622. left that

  623. land out

  624. ahead of his

  625. brothers because

  626. of famine.

  627. He was quite

  628. forced to do

  629. so at the

  630. age of 17

  631. to go to

  632. Egypt.

  633. He became

  634. the precursor

  635. to his

  636. family and

  637. the Israelites

  638. all ending

  639. up in

  640. Egypt prior

  641. to the

  642. exodus.

  643. and yet

  644. he was

  645. still

  646. holding

  647. this

  648. promise.

  649. Israel

  650. will

  651. leave

  652. Egypt.

  653. They

  654. will

  655. be

  656. settled

  657. in

  658. the

  659. land

  660. that

  661. God

  662. has

  663. promised

  664. them.

  665. And again,

  666. just imagine

  667. the faith.

  668. He went to

  669. Egypt at

  670. the age

  671. of 17.

  672. He left

  673. this land

  674. that was

  675. promised

  676. to his

  677. people and

  678. he lived

  679. there until

  680. he died

  681. at 110.

  682. Do you

  683. sometimes feel

  684. like the

  685. promises of

  686. God are

  687. tearing?

  688. Look at

  689. the examples

  690. of these

  691. people,

  692. this great

  693. hall of

  694. faith,

  695. these witnesses

  696. that have

  697. gone before

  698. us.

  699. God's

  700. word is

  701. sure.

  702. And he

  703. was so

  704. confident of

  705. this that

  706. before he

  707. died he

  708. spoke of

  709. the exodus

  710. and he

  711. gave them

  712. instructions

  713. to take

  714. his body

  715. with and

  716. bury it

  717. in that

  718. place.

  719. He said

  720. it's going

  721. to happen

  722. so when

  723. it happens

  724. be sure

  725. to take

  726. me there.

  727. I want

  728. my body

  729. to be

  730. laid to

  731. rest

  732. in there.

  733. And then

  734. in fulfillment

  735. of his

  736. directive

  737. Moses carried

  738. his body

  739. out of

  740. Egypt,

  741. Exodus

  742. 13,

  743. and was

  744. buried in

  745. Shechem by

  746. Joshua when

  747. Canaan was

  748. conquered in

  749. Joshua chapter

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  750. 24.

  751. So you see

  752. what the author

  753. of Hebrews is

  754. doing.

  755. Last week we

  756. looked at the

  757. text prior and

  758. this week the

  759. great confidence

  760. in the promise

  761. God made in

  762. the Abrahamic

  763. covenant.

  764. These things

  765. will come to

  766. pass.

  767. And the way

  768. that these

  769. men's lives

  770. lined up with

  771. a great

  772. belief in

  773. those promises.

  774. So these are

  775. examples for

  776. us of

  777. persevering

  778. faith.

  779. Faith in

  780. promises that

  781. they had

  782. yet to

  783. see

  784. fulfilled

  785. but believed

  786. all the

  787. same.

  788. The author

  789. of Hebrews

  790. is spurring

  791. us this

  792. morning on

  793. to the

  794. same kind

  795. of faith.

  796. And frankly

  797. beloved as

  798. we consider

  799. the faith of

  800. these men we

  801. ought to have

  802. more confidence

  803. because we

  804. have seen

  805. and we are

  806. seeing the

  807. promises

  808. fulfilled.

  809. We have a

  810. greater

  811. understanding of

  812. how it is that

  813. God is bringing

  814. all these

  815. promises to

  816. pass.

  817. We have a

  818. greater picture

  819. of the

  820. revelation of

  821. how things are

  822. coming to

  823. pass because

  824. we are

  825. chapters ahead

  826. in the story

  827. of redemption.

  828. It ought to

  829. be that much

  830. easier for

  831. us to see

  832. it and to

  833. have this

  834. kind of

  835. faith.

  836. So allow

  837. me in a few

  838. moments to

  839. ask some

  840. questions

  841. concerning our

  842. faith.

  843. Just two.

  844. Well,

  845. there's some

  846. questions.

  847. Number one,

  848. has God

  849. promised it?

  850. Has God

  851. promised it?

  852. We believe in

  853. a closed canon.

  854. This means that

  855. God has spoken.

  856. We are not

  857. adding books

  858. to this text.

  859. God has spoken.

  860. It is a

  861. completed work

  862. and it is

  863. God's complete

  864. work to mankind.

  865. It is inerrant

  866. because God has

  867. said it and God

  868. cannot lie.

  869. Is it

  870. authoritative

  871. book?

  872. Because he is

  873. the God of

  874. the universe,

  875. therefore what

  876. he says

  877. must go.

  878. It reigns

  879. then over

  880. us and

  881. it is

  882. sufficient.

  883. So it

  884. contains within

  885. it all the

  886. promises that

  887. we need to

  888. know and

  889. to believe.

  890. So do you

  891. do you know

  892. the promises

  893. of God?

  894. He has made

  895. some astounding

  896. promises,

  897. life-fulfilling

  898. promises,

  899. some beyond-this-world

  900. promises.

  901. Has God

  902. promised it?

  903. Secondly,

  904. do we believe it?

  905. Do we believe it?

  906. Do we believe

  907. what the Bible

  908. says about

  909. salvation?

  910. John 14,

  911. 6,

  912. as Jesus

  913. said,

  914. I am the

  915. way and

  916. the truth

  917. and the

  918. life.

  919. No one

  920. comes to the

  921. Father except

  922. through me.

  923. Do we

  924. understand,

  925. do we live

  926. in the light

  927. of that

  928. truth that

  929. we can only

  930. be saved

  931. by the

  932. life,

  933. death,

  934. and

  935. resurrection

  936. of Jesus

  937. Christ?

  938. Have we

  939. thrown

  940. ourselves

  941. on the

  942. mercy of

  943. God

  944. found in

  945. Christ's

  946. life and

  947. death for

  948. us,

  949. his active

  950. and passive

  951. obedience

  952. on our

  953. behalf?

  954. Do we

  955. believe what

  956. it says about

  957. sanctification?

  958. Paul wrote

  959. to the

  960. Philippians,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  961. chapter 1

  962. and verse 6,

  963. I am sure

  964. of this,

  965. that he who

  966. began a good

  967. work in you

  968. will bring it

  969. to completion

  970. at the day

  971. of Jesus

  972. Christ.

  973. Do we

  974. believe that

  975. having been

  976. set apart

  977. by the

  978. gospel,

  979. having our

  980. souls saved,

  981. that we are

  982. meant to

  983. now be

  984. continuing

  985. in holiness

  986. and that we

  987. have the

  988. spirit of

  989. Christ who

  990. uses careful

  991. exacting

  992. application of

  993. the word of

  994. Christ to

  995. bring us to

  996. that day.

  997. That we can

  998. in fact grow

  999. in holiness

  1000. because we

  1001. have in

  1002. fact been

  1003. set free

  1004. from the

  1005. power of

  1006. sin.

  1007. Too often

  1008. we act like

  1009. we're powerless

  1010. when the

  1011. truth of

  1012. the scripture

  1013. is that we

  1014. have been

  1015. given power

  1016. to put away

  1017. sin and to

  1018. put on

  1019. righteousness.

  1020. Do we

  1021. believe what

  1022. it says about

  1023. glorification?

  1024. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  1025. chapter 4

  1026. verse 16

  1027. and following

  1028. Paul writes

  1029. so we do

  1030. not lose

  1031. heart.

  1032. Whatever is

  1033. going on in

  1034. the world

  1035. around us

  1036. we do not

  1037. lose heart

  1038. though our

  1039. outer self

  1040. is wasting

  1041. away our

  1042. inner self

  1043. is being

  1044. renewed day

  1045. by day.

  1046. Paul's talking

  1047. about outer

  1048. man like

  1049. the part of

  1050. us that we

  1051. won't take

  1052. with us

  1053. and inner

  1054. man.

  1055. It's being

  1056. renewed day

  1057. by day

  1058. for this

  1059. light

  1060. momentary

  1061. affliction

  1062. is preparing

  1063. for us

  1064. an eternal

  1065. weight of

  1066. glory beyond

  1067. all

  1068. comparison.

  1069. as we

  1070. look not

  1071. to the

  1072. things that

  1073. are seen

  1074. but to

  1075. the things

  1076. that are

  1077. unseen

  1078. for the

  1079. things that

  1080. are seen

  1081. are transient

  1082. or passing

  1083. away but

  1084. the things

  1085. that are

  1086. unseen

  1087. are eternal.

  1088. Do we

  1089. live in

  1090. that way

  1091. as Abraham

  1092. and his

  1093. descendants

  1094. lived in

  1095. tents

  1096. awaiting

  1097. the promise?

  1098. Do we

  1099. live in a

  1100. transient

  1101. mindset?

  1102. Sojourners

  1103. aliens

  1104. and exiles

  1105. in a

  1106. place

  1107. that's

  1108. ultimately

  1109. not our

  1110. home?

  1111. To

  1112. recognize

  1113. that the

  1114. reason

  1115. that you

  1116. are so

  1117. unsettled

  1118. with the

  1119. way the

  1120. world

  1121. is

  1122. because

  1123. you

  1124. were

  1125. not

  1126. made

  1127. for

  1128. this

  1129. world.

  1130. You

  1131. were

  1132. made

  1133. for

  1134. a

  1135. new

  1136. world

  1137. that

  1138. is

  1139. beyond.

  1140. We

  1141. get

  1142. so

  1143. focused

  1144. on

  1145. the

  1146. mess

  1147. going

  1148. on

  1149. around

  1150. us

  1151. and

  1152. we

  1153. forget

  1154. the

  1155. glorious

  1156. truth

  1157. that

  1158. God

  1159. is

  1160. making

  1161. all

  1162. things

  1163. new.

  1164. It's

  1165. a

  1166. winding

  1167. down

  1168. of the

  1169. world.

  1170. It's

  1171. the

  1172. thing

  1173. that's

  1174. been

  1175. promised

  1176. to

  1177. us.

  1178. And

  1179. beloved,

  1180. it will

  1181. get worse.

  1182. It will

  1183. get worse

  1184. and worse

  1185. and worse

  1186. until the

  1187. end comes.

  1188. But the

  1189. kingdom of

  1190. God is

  1191. coming to

  1192. bear in

  1193. the hearts

  1194. of men

  1195. and women.

  1196. In that

  1197. sense,

  1198. the world

  1199. is winding

  1200. up.

  1201. The

  1202. gospel

  1203. is going

  1204. forth.

  1205. The

  1206. church

  1207. is being

  1208. gathered.

  1209. The

  1210. day

  1211. will

  1212. come

  1213. when

  1214. Christ

  1215. will

  1216. say

  1217. enough.

  1218. He

  1219. will

  1220. come

  1221. back.

  1222. He

  1223. will

  1224. eternally

  1225. judge

  1226. the

  1227. living

  1228. and

  1229. the

  1230. dead.

  1231. We

  1232. will

  1233. be

  1234. raised

  1235. with

  1236. him

  1237. and

  1238. we

  1239. will

  1240. reign

  1241. with

  1242. him

  1243. forever.

  1244. Do we

  1245. have

  1246. that

  1247. kind

  1248. of

  1249. faith?

  1250. Do we

  1251. live

  1252. in that

  1253. way?

  1254. On your

  1255. bulletin,

  1256. there's a

  1257. William Bates

  1258. quotations,

  1259. Puritan,

  1260. as they

  1261. typically

  1262. are.

  1263. He said,

  1264. God will

  1265. try our

  1266. faith before

  1267. he satisfies

  1268. our

  1269. sight.

  1270. Now,

  1271. I've been

  1272. reading to

  1273. our boys,

  1274. the

  1275. Chronicles of

  1276. Narnia,

  1277. I hope

  1278. you're

  1279. familiar

  1280. with

  1281. this

  1282. work

  1283. of

  1284. C.S.

  1285. Lewis.

  1286. And right

  1287. now we

  1288. are reading

  1289. my favorite

  1290. of all

  1291. the books,

  1292. which is

  1293. The Horse

  1294. and His

  1295. Boy.

  1296. And it

  1297. is my

  1298. favorite

  1299. of all

  1300. of his

  1301. books

  1302. because

  1303. it's

  1304. all about

  1305. providence.

  1306. It's

  1307. all about

  1308. the way

  1309. in which

  1310. Christ

  1311. works

  1312. in the

  1313. world.

  1314. And so

  1315. I want

  1316. to read

  1317. a little

  1318. bit of

  1319. it

  1320. to

  1321. you

  1322. because

  1323. I

  1324. think

  1325. we

  1326. often

  1327. find

  1328. ourselves

  1329. identifying

  1330. with

  1331. one of

  1332. the

  1333. primary

  1334. characters,

  1335. a young

  1336. man,

  1337. young boy

  1338. named

  1339. Shasta.

  1340. Kind of

  1341. his,

  1342. he has

  1343. this very

  1344. I'm the

  1345. most

  1346. unlucky

  1347. person

  1348. in the

  1349. world

  1350. kind

  1351. of

  1352. attitude

  1353. throughout

  1354. the

  1355. book.

  1356. And I

  1357. don't want

  1358. to totally

  1359. spoil the

  1360. entire

  1361. story for

  1362. you,

  1363. but I

  1364. got to

  1365. give you

  1366. a little

  1367. bit of

  1368. a background

  1369. for it.

  1370. Shasta

  1371. is being

  1372. raised

  1373. by a

  1374. man who

  1375. is not

  1376. his

  1377. father

  1378. in a

  1379. land that

  1380. is not

  1381. his

  1382. land,

  1383. the land

  1384. of

  1385. Calorman.

  1386. And he

  1387. discovers

  1388. a talking

  1389. horse of

  1390. Narnia,

  1391. all the

  1392. horses of

  1393. the land

  1394. of Calorman

  1395. are what

  1396. they call

  1397. dumb,

  1398. they don't

  1399. speak,

  1400. but he

  1401. discovers a

  1402. talking horse

  1403. of Narnia,

  1404. a war horse

  1405. named Bree,

  1406. and he

  1407. decides to

  1408. escape on

  1409. Bree,

  1410. and they

  1411. take off

  1412. for Narnia.

  1413. And along

  1414. the way,

  1415. they meet

  1416. a young

  1417. adult woman

  1418. named

  1419. Erebus,

  1420. and a

  1421. talking horse

  1422. named

  1423. Quinn.

  1424. And they're

  1425. brought together

  1426. through some

  1427. providence,

  1428. they travel

  1429. through a

  1430. major city

  1431. of the land

  1432. of Calorman,

  1433. where they

  1434. find out

  1435. a plot

  1436. that the

  1437. prince of

  1438. Calorman

  1439. is going

  1440. to attack

  1441. Narnia,

  1442. first by

  1443. taking a

  1444. city of

  1445. a land

  1446. called

  1447. Archenland,

  1448. called

  1449. Anvert.

  1450. And it

  1451. lies between

  1452. Calorman

  1453. and the

  1454. country of

  1455. Narnia.

  1456. So this is

  1457. kind of the

  1458. backdrop of

  1459. what's

  1460. happening.

  1461. And so

  1462. finding this

  1463. out,

  1464. they decide

  1465. to quickly

  1466. escape to

  1467. Narnia,

  1468. and to

  1469. first warn

  1470. King Loon

  1471. of this

  1472. coming

  1473. attack.

  1474. These guys

  1475. are coming,

  1476. 200 horsemen,

  1477. they're coming

  1478. to attack,

  1479. we must

  1480. get across

  1481. in order

  1482. to be of

  1483. help.

  1484. And one

  1485. of the

  1486. dangers

  1487. that they

  1488. encounter

  1489. along the

  1490. way is

  1491. that they're

  1492. chased by

  1493. lions.

  1494. There's a

  1495. number of

  1496. circumstances

  1497. by which

  1498. they are

  1499. chased by

  1500. lions.

  1501. So as

  1502. the story

  1503. goes on,

  1504. they have

  1505. gotten to

  1506. this land

  1507. of Archenland,

  1508. and Shasta

  1509. has gone on

  1510. by himself

  1511. on a dumb

  1512. horse.

  1513. He's not

  1514. Umbri anymore,

  1515. he's on a

  1516. horse that

  1517. can't speak.

  1518. And he

  1519. finds King

  1520. Loon,

  1521. and he warns

  1522. King Loon,

  1523. and King

  1524. Loon and

  1525. his hunting

  1526. party that's

  1527. with him,

  1528. they take

  1529. off back

  1530. to Anver

  1531. to raise

  1532. the alarm

  1533. and bolt

  1534. the gates,

  1535. and a

  1536. deep,

  1537. deep mist,

  1538. a mist

  1539. rolls in,

  1540. it becomes

  1541. night,

  1542. so picture

  1543. this,

  1544. it's

  1545. night time,

  1546. it's dark,

  1547. it's gloomy,

  1548. and his

  1549. dumb horse

  1550. won't keep

  1551. up,

  1552. so he

  1553. loses them,

  1554. he loses

  1555. the pack.

  1556. So here

  1557. he is again,

  1558. the most

  1559. unlucky

  1560. that can

  1561. be.

  1562. And he

  1563. hears horsemen

  1564. riding up

  1565. behind him,

  1566. and this

  1567. is the

  1568. enemy coming

  1569. along,

  1570. and so he

  1571. takes an

  1572. alternate route,

  1573. so he's

  1574. going by

  1575. himself

  1576. through the

  1577. mountains

  1578. in the

  1579. dark,

  1580. and as

  1581. he's doing

  1582. so,

  1583. he begins

  1584. to sense

  1585. a creature

  1586. walking

  1587. along him,

  1588. beside him,

  1589. okay,

  1590. and this is

  1591. what I'll

  1592. start reading,

  1593. okay.

  1594. Who are

  1595. you?

  1596. he said,

  1597. scarcely

  1598. above a

  1599. whisper.

  1600. One who

  1601. has waited

  1602. long for

  1603. you to

  1604. speak,

  1605. said the

  1606. thing.

  1607. Its voice

  1608. was not

  1609. loud,

  1610. but very

  1611. large and

  1612. deep.

  1613. Are you,

  1614. are you a

  1615. giant?

  1616. asked Shasta.

  1617. Shasta?

  1618. You might

  1619. call me a

  1620. giant,

  1621. said the

  1622. voice,

  1623. but I am

  1624. not like

  1625. the creatures

  1626. you call

  1627. giants.

  1628. I can't

  1629. see you

  1630. at all,

  1631. said Shasta,

  1632. after staring

  1633. very hard.

  1634. Then,

  1635. for an even

  1636. more terrible

  1637. idea had

  1638. come out

  1639. into his

  1640. head,

  1641. he said,

  1642. almost in a

  1643. scream,

  1644. you're not

  1645. something dead,

  1646. are you?

  1647. Oh,

  1648. please do

  1649. go away.

  1650. What harm

  1651. have I ever

  1652. done you?

  1653. Oh,

  1654. I am the

  1655. unluckiest

  1656. person in

  1657. the whole

  1658. world.

  1659. Once more,

  1660. he felt the

  1661. warm breath

  1662. of the thing

  1663. on his

  1664. hand and

  1665. face.

  1666. There,

  1667. it said,

  1668. that is not

  1669. the breath

  1670. of a ghost.

  1671. Tell me

  1672. your sorrows.

  1673. Shasta was a

  1674. little reassured

  1675. by the breath,

  1676. so he told

  1677. how he had

  1678. never known

  1679. his real

  1680. father or

  1681. mother and

  1682. had been

  1683. brought up

  1684. sternly by

  1685. the fishermen.

  1686. And then he

  1687. told the story

  1688. of his escape

  1689. and how they

  1690. were chased

  1691. by lions and

  1692. forced to

  1693. swim for

  1694. their lives,

  1695. and of all

  1696. their dangers

  1697. in Tashban

  1698. and about his

  1699. night among

  1700. the tombs and

  1701. how the beast

  1702. howled at him

  1703. out of the

  1704. desert.

  1705. They told

  1706. about the

  1707. heat of the

  1708. thirst of

  1709. their desert

  1710. journey and

  1711. how they were

  1712. almost at

  1713. their goal

  1714. when another

  1715. lion chased

  1716. them and

  1717. wounded Erebus

  1718. and also how

  1719. very long it

  1720. was since he

  1721. had had

  1722. anything to

  1723. eat.

  1724. I do not

  1725. call you

  1726. unfortunate,

  1727. said the

  1728. large voice.

  1729. Don't you

  1730. think it was

  1731. bad luck to

  1732. meet so many

  1733. lions,

  1734. said Shasta?

  1735. There was

  1736. only one

  1737. lion,

  1738. said the

  1739. voice.

  1740. What on

  1741. earth do

  1742. you mean?

  1743. I just

  1744. told you

  1745. there were

  1746. at least

  1747. two the

  1748. first night

  1749. and there

  1750. was only

  1751. one,

  1752. but he

  1753. was swift

  1754. of foot.

  1755. How do

  1756. you know?

  1757. I was

  1758. the lion.

  1759. And as

  1760. Shasta

  1761. gaped with

  1762. open mouth

  1763. and said

  1764. nothing,

  1765. the voice

  1766. continued.

  1767. I was

  1768. the lion

  1769. who forced

  1770. you to

  1771. join with

  1772. Erebus.

  1773. I was

  1774. the cat

  1775. who comforted

  1776. you among

  1777. the houses

  1778. of the dead.

  1779. I was

  1780. the lion

  1781. who drove

  1782. the jackals

  1783. from you

  1784. while you

  1785. slept.

  1786. I was

  1787. the lion

  1788. who gave

  1789. the horse

  1790. the new

  1791. strength of

  1792. fear for

  1793. the last

  1794. mile so

  1795. that you

  1796. could reach

  1797. King

  1798. Loon in

  1799. time.

  1800. And I

  1801. was the

  1802. lion,

  1803. you do

  1804. not

  1805. remember,

  1806. who pushed

  1807. the boat

  1808. in which

  1809. you lay,

  1810. a child

  1811. near death,

  1812. so that it

  1813. came to shore

  1814. where a man

  1815. sat,

  1816. it was

  1817. I.

  1818. But what

  1819. for?

  1820. Child,

  1821. said the

  1822. voice,

  1823. I am

  1824. telling you

  1825. your story,

  1826. not hers.

  1827. I tell

  1828. no one

  1829. any story

  1830. but his

  1831. own.

  1832. Who

  1833. are you?

  1834. said Shasta.

  1835. Myself,

  1836. said the

  1837. voice,

  1838. very deep

  1839. and low,

  1840. and so

  1841. that the

  1842. earth

  1843. shook.

  1844. And again

  1845. myself,

  1846. loud and

  1847. clear and

  1848. happy,

  1849. and the

  1850. third time,

  1851. myself.

  1852. Whispered

  1853. so softly

  1854. you could

  1855. hardly hear

  1856. it,

  1857. and yet

  1858. it seemed

  1859. to come

  1860. from all

  1861. around you

  1862. as if

  1863. the leaves

  1864. rustled

  1865. with it.

  1866. Shasta

  1867. was no

  1868. longer

  1869. afraid

  1870. that the

  1871. voice

  1872. belonged

  1873. to

  1874. something

  1875. that

  1876. would

  1877. eat

  1878. him,

  1879. nor

  1880. that

  1881. it

  1882. !

  1883. He

  1884. knew

  1885. the

  1886. night

  1887. was

  1888. over

  1889. at

  1890. last.

  1891. He

  1892. could

  1893. see

  1894. the

  1895. mane

  1896. and

  1897. ears

  1898. and

  1899. head

  1900. of his

  1901. horse

  1902. quite easily

  1903. now.

  1904. A golden

  1905. light fell

  1906. on them

  1907. from the

  1908. left.

  1909. He thought

  1910. it was

  1911. the sun.

  1912. He

  1913. turned

  1914. and saw,

  1915. pacing

  1916. beside

  1917. him,

  1918. taller

  1919. than the

  1920. horse,

  1921. a lion.

  1922. The

  1923. horse

  1924. did not

  1925. seem

  1926. to be

  1927. afraid

  1928. of it

  1929. or else

  1930. he

  1931. could

  1932. not

  1933. see

  1934. it.

  1935. It

  1936. was

  1937. from

  1938. the

  1939. lion

  1940. that

  1941. the

  1942. !

  1943. came.

  1944. No

  1945. one

  1946. ever

  1947. saw

  1948. anything

  1949. more

  1950. terrible

  1951. or

  1952. beautiful.

  1953. Luckily,

  1954. Shasta

  1955. had lived

  1956. all his

  1957. life

  1958. far too

  1959. south

  1960. in

  1961. Calamon

  1962. to have

  1963. heard

  1964. the

  1965. tales

  1966. that

  1967. were

  1968. whispered

  1969. in

  1970. Tashpen

  1971. about

  1972. a

  1973. dreadful

  1974. Narnian

  1975. demon

  1976. that

  1977. appeared

  1978. in

  1979. the

  1980. form

  1981. of

  1982. a

  1983. lion.

  1984. And

  1985. of

  1986. course

  1987. he

  1988. knew

  1989. none

  1990. of

  1991. the

  1992. stories

  1993. of

  1994. Aslan,

  1995. the

  1996. great

  1997. lion,

  1998. the

  1999. son

  2000. of

  2001. the

  2002. emperor

  2003. over

  2004. the

  2005. sea,

  2006. the

  2007. king

  2008. above

  2009. all

  2010. high

  2011. kings

  2012. in

  2013. Narnia.

  2014. But

  2015. after

  2016. one

  2017. glance

  2018. at

  2019. the

  2020. lion's

  2021. face,

  2022. he

  2023. slipped

  2024. out

  2025. of

  2026. the

  2027. saddle

  2028. and

  2029. fell

  2030. at

  2031. its

  2032. feet.

  2033. He

  2034. couldn't

  2035. say

  2036. anything,

  2037. but

  2038. then he

  2039. didn't

  2040. want

  2041. to

  2042. say

  2043. anything,

  2044. and

  2045. he

  2046. knew

  2047. he

  2048. needn't

  2049. say

  2050. anything.

  2051. The

  2052. high

  2053. king

  2054. above

  2055. all

  2056. kings

  2057. stooped

  2058. toward

  2059. him,

  2060. its

  2061. mane

  2062. and

  2063. some

  2064. strange

  2065. and

  2066. solemn

  2067. perfume

  2068. that

  2069. hung

  2070. about

  2071. the

  2072. mane

  2073. was

  2074. all

  2075. around

  2076. him.

  2077. It

  2078. touched

  2079. and

  2080. the

  2081. fiery

  2082. brightness

  2083. of

  2084. the

  2085. lion

  2086. rolled

  2087. themselves

  2088. together

  2089. into

  2090. a

  2091. swirling

  2092. glory

  2093. and

  2094. gathered

  2095. themselves

  2096. up

  2097. and

  2098. disappeared.

  2099. He

  2100. was

  2101. alone

  2102. with

  2103. the

  2104. horse

  2105. on

  2106. a

  2107. grassy

  2108. hillside

  2109. under

  2110. a

  2118. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:1

  2119. chapter 12

  2120. verse 1

  2121. and 2

  2122. says

  2123. therefore since

  2124. we are

  2125. surrounded by

  2126. so great

  2127. a cloud

  2128. of

  2129. witnesses

  2130. Let us

  2131. also

  2132. lay

  2133. aside

  2134. every

  2135. weight

  2137. sin

  2138. which

  2144. run

  2145. with

  2146. endurance

  2147. the

  2148. race

  2149. that

  2150. is

  2151. set

  2152. before

  2153. us

  2154. looking

  2155. to

  2156. Jesus

  2157. the

  2158. founder

  2159. and

  2160. perfecter

  2161. of

  2162. our

  2163. faith

  2164. for

  2165. the

  2166. joy

  2167. that

  2168. was

  2169. set

  2170. before

  2171. him

  2172. endured

  2173. the

  2174. cross

  2175. despising

  2176. shame

  2177. and

  2180. at

  2181. the

  2182. right

  2183. hand

  2184. of

  2185. the

  2186. throne

  2187. of

  2188. God
