  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn with me to Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  2. Hebrews chapter 12. Our text for study this morning is Hebrews chapter 12 verses 4 through 11.

Hebrews 12 chapter mention Hebrews 12:4–11

  3. ! Before I read it, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us, written for His glory and our good.

  4. And as such, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  5. Hebrews 12 verse 4 and following.

    Hebrews 12:4

  6. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons.

  7. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

  8. If you are left without discipline in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

  9. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them.

  10. Shall we not much more be subject to the father of spirits and live?

  11. For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them.

  12. But He disciplines us for our good, that we may share His holiness.

  13. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant.

  14. But later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

  15. The very first sermon that I preached on the book of Hebrews some months ago

  16. was opened with the following quotation from William Lane,

  17. who is a contemporary and very respected New Testament authority.

  18. He wrote,

  19. Hebrews is a delight for the person who loves puzzles.

  20. Its form is unusual, its setting in life is uncertain, and its argument is unfamiliar.

  21. It invites engagement in the task of defining the undefined.

  22. Undefined are the identity of the writer, his conceptual background,

  23. the character and location of the community addressed,

  24. the circumstances and date of composition,

  25. the nature of the crisis to which the document is a response,

  26. the literary genre and the purpose and plan of the work.

  27. Although these undefined issues continue to be addressed and debated vigorously,

  28. no real consensus has been reached.

  29. Lane then goes on to do a very careful work

  30. to give us the probabilities and the likelies of the letter before us.

  31. But one matter is without contention.

  32. The theme of Hebrews is the supremacy and finality of Jesus Christ.

  33. That is that Christ is greater than,

  34. and he lays out this argument in the opening chapters,

  35. than angels, greater than priests,

  36. greater than the old covenant redemptive economy.

  37. And that Christ is the final word.

  38. We need no new revelation.

  39. And we need not go back to any system of the world.

  40. Jesus Christ is supreme,

  41. and Jesus Christ is final for the salvation of our souls.

  42. We know from clues throughout the text

  43. that this letter was originally written to Hellenistic Jewish Christians,

  44. that is Greek-speaking Jews,

  45. that had not seen Jesus,

  46. but had heard the gospel and believed.

  47. This is Hebrews chapter 2, the very beginning.

    Hebrews 2 chapter mention

  48. And that they had an Italian locus.

  49. They were located within Italy,

  50. likely on the outskirts of Rome.

  51. They were suffering and would suffer further.

  52. And so we have been exploring at link the letter's secondary theme,

  53. the necessity of faithful endurance.

  54. He is working out that those who are in fact in Christ

  55. will endure in Christ to the end.

  56. Last week we saw the author use the metaphor of a race

  57. to encourage these believers and us

  58. after a sweeping Old Testament summary of faithful endurance

  59. in the following way.

  60. And this is the first three verses of Hebrews chapter 12.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  61. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  62. let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely,

  63. and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

  64. looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,

  65. who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

  66. despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  67. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself

  68. so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted.

  69. So he tells us that it's going to be a race

  70. that has to be run with endurance.

  71. And to do so, we're going to have to lay aside anything

  72. that hinders that race.

  73. And the way that we're going to complete that race

  74. is by fixing our eyes on Christ

  75. as the supreme example of faithfulness.

  76. He continues this section with further encouragement

  77. to faithful endurance amidst these undefined issues

  78. that Lane suggests to us,

  79. which we will study in the following outline.

  80. Number one, this is our outline for the text this morning.

  81. Number one, correction for faltering endurance.

  82. Correction for faltering endurance.

  83. Number two, challenge to sustained endurance.

  84. And number three, reasons for sustained endurance.

  85. So number one, correction for faltering endurance.

  86. And we'll find this in verses four through six.

  87. At the very outset of today's text,

  88. he begins with two corrections.

  89. First, he corrects them with the fact that

  90. while they had suffered,

  91. no one had yet been martyred.

  92. He works to give them a bit of perspective.

  93. Verse four,

  94. in your struggle against sin,

  95. you have not yet resisted.

  96. To the point of shedding your blood.

  97. There appears to be a shift in metaphor here

  98. from the Christian life being described as

  99. the race that is set before us in verse two

  100. to that of a wrestling match with sin,

  101. possibly also in the Olympic games,

  102. a boxing match, right?

  103. This imagery may have popped into his original hearers' minds.

  104. Truly, the Christian life is one

  105. that must be run with endurance,

  106. and it certainly is a struggle against sin.

  107. Now, in verse three of chapter 12,

  108. he has just exhorted them to consider him

  109. who endured from sinners such hostility against himself.

  110. Jesus had shed his blood.

  111. They had not.

  112. It is as if he is saying,

  113. quit being so dramatic.

  114. None of you has died yet.

  115. It is as if he is saying,

  116. stop your whining.

  117. John Piper would say,

  118. murmur, murmur, murmur.

  119. I find this a particularly striking correction

  120. for the church today.

  121. We have suffered so little.

  122. Suffered so little.

  123. And we complain so much.

  124. But we have suffered so little compared

  125. to the death of our Lord.

  126. Not a single one of us will ever bear

  127. what Christ endured.

  128. While it's possible that we may

  129. die a death for the name of Christ,

  130. we will not bear the wrath of God

  131. for the church in our dying.

  132. None of us.

  133. So as we look to Christ,

  134. as this perfect example for us,

  135. we have not struggled against sin in this way.

  136. If we are considering him who endured from sinners

  137. such hostility against himself,

  138. then we also should not grow weary or faint hearted.

  139. This is the first correction that he brings to them.

  140. Gives them some perspective.

  141. Second, the author corrects them

  142. because they had failed to remember

  143. and apply the scripture

  144. to their current situation.

  145. He writes, verse 5,

  146. and have you forgotten the exhortation

  147. that addresses you as sons?

  148. They had forgotten.

  149. And so he is gently reminding them.

  150. Ladies, do not forget that the Bible was written

  151. at a time when all of the inheritance of a father

  152. was granted to his sons.

  153. So you want to be a son,

  154. as the Bible expresses it,

  155. and you are.

  156. Paul wrote in Galatians chapter 3, verse 26,

    Galatians 3:26

  157. in Christ Jesus,

  158. you are all sons of God through faith.

  159. With this in mind,

  160. here the scripture that the author of Hebrews now cites,

  161. which is Proverbs chapter 3, verse 11 and 12.

    Proverbs 3:11

  162. My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

  163. nor be weary when reproved by him.

  164. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves

  165. and chastises every son whom he receives.

  166. You see here what the author is doing

  167. is he's saying,

  168. listen, church,

  169. everything you're experiencing,

  170. all of the hardships that happen in your life

  171. come from the Lord's good hand

  172. because you are his children.

  173. This is an astounding perspective shift.

  174. If you don't think in these terms,

  175. oh, I pray that you would begin

  176. to be able to see this morning

  177. that the difficulties that are happening

  178. in your life are coming from

  179. the one who loves you.

  180. In verses 5 and 6,

  181. there are two negative implications.

  182. Don't disdain and don't dismay.

  183. The author says,

  184. do not regard lightly.

  185. Do not cast it off.

  186. Do not consider it as it should be considered,

  187. the discipline of the Lord.

  188. And do not dismay when you are being disciplined.

  189. He says,

  190. nor be weary when reproved by him.

  191. The opposite, therefore,

  192. are two positive exhortations for us.

  193. That would be,

  194. do regard,

  195. pay close attention,

  196. appreciate the discipline of the Lord,

  197. and do refresh,

  198. which I recognize is bad English,

  199. so you could say,

  200. or be refreshed,

  201. be encouraged,

  202. be uplifted by the fact

  203. that God disciplines you.

  204. The author wants us to see

  205. that the challenges that we face in this world

  206. are for our good.

  207. They are given to us

  208. by his kind hand.

  209. Why?

  210. Love.

  211. The text tells us,

  212. for love,

  213. the Lord disciplines

  214. the one he loves.

  215. Being disciplined is a sign

  216. that you belong to God

  217. and that he is seeking your good.

  218. Do you believe this?

  219. Do you believe

  220. that you belong to God

  221. and that his discipline

  222. is an act of loving kindness

  223. to you?

  224. Or,

  225. do you think that you

  226. know better?

  227. That you could arrange your life

  228. in a more suitable fashion?

  229. That the challenges of your life,

  230. the things that seem to keep you

  231. from enduring faithfully,

  232. are unfair and misplaced.

  233. That they couldn't possibly

  234. be kindnesses

  235. from God.

  236. Beloved,

  237. if your faith is faltering,

  238. you need correction.

  239. You need perspective

  240. and you need

  241. the promises

  242. of God.

  243. The Lord disciplines

  244. the one

  245. he loves.

  246. To make the point

  247. a bit further,

  248. let me give you

  249. one more text.

  250. This is Psalm 84,

  251. the second half

  252. of verse 11,

  253. which says,

  254. no good thing

  255. does he,

  256. God,

  257. withhold

  258. from those

  259. who walk

  260. uprightly.

  261. uprightly.

  262. No good thing

  263. does he withhold

  264. from those

  265. who walk

  266. uprightly.

  267. If you are in Jesus Christ

  268. this morning,

  269. if you have repented

  270. and believed

  271. in the person

  272. and work

  273. of Christ,

  274. knowing that he

  275. kept the law

  276. for you,

  277. that he died the death

  278. that you deserve,

  279. right?

  280. You don't come to God

  281. on your own merit,

  282. but because of the merit

  283. of Jesus,

  284. right?

  285. If you have turned

  286. from your sin

  287. and you have said,

  288. I need a savior,

  289. Christ is this

  290. great savior

  291. to you,

  292. then you are

  293. clothed

  294. in his righteousness.

  295. Therefore,

  296. you walk

  297. uprightly

  298. before God.

  299. When God

  300. sees you,

  301. he sees the

  302. uprightness

  303. of Christ.

  304. Psalm 84,

  305. 11 says,

  306. no good thing

  307. does he withhold

  308. from those

  309. who walk

  310. uprightly.

  311. If you're in Christ,

  312. you walk

  313. uprightly.

  314. As such,

  315. God withholds

  316. no good

  317. thing

  318. from you.

  319. That is,

  320. your life

  321. is full

  322. of

  323. good.

  324. Maybe not

  325. by your definition,

  326. but it is full

  327. of good,

  328. of God's

  329. defining,

  330. and it is

  331. aimed at,

  332. it is for

  333. your

  334. sustained

  335. endurance.

  336. God loves

  337. you far

  338. too much

  339. to be terribly

  340. concerned about

  341. the benefits

  342. you're receiving

  343. now.

  344. He's far

  345. more concerned

  346. about the benefits

  347. that you'll

  348. receive forever.

  349. He has

  350. the mindset

  351. of eternity,

  352. and we

  353. very quickly

  354. are forgetting

  355. that we are

  356. a people

  357. passing through

  358. a vapor

  359. in the wind,

  360. and God

  361. is preparing

  362. us for

  363. a future

  364. glory.

  365. The Lord

  366. disciplines

  367. the one

  368. he loves.

  369. have you

  370. forgotten

  371. the text

  372. that addresses

  373. you

  374. as sons?

  375. Secondly,

  376. we see in the text,

  377. in the first half

  378. of verse 7,

  379. a challenge

  380. to sustained

  381. endurance.

  382. The author

  383. has told us

  384. that Jesus

  385. endured,

  386. endured,

  387. and it is

  388. imperative

  389. that we

  390. endure.

  391. It is

  392. for discipline

  393. that you

  394. have to

  395. endure.

  396. Culturally,

  397. we tend

  398. to have a

  399. very negative

  400. view of

  401. discipline.

  402. You may

  403. have either

  404. never been

  405. disciplined

  406. in your

  407. home,

  408. or you

  409. were possibly

  410. disciplined

  411. with severity.

  412. The word

  413. discipline

  414. means to

  415. teach

  416. or instruct.

  417. This is

  418. what this

  419. word means,

  420. which means

  421. that discipline

  422. ought to be

  423. viewed as

  424. a positive

  425. thing,

  426. especially

  427. that discipline

  428. which comes

  429. from the

  430. Lord.

  431. Additionally,

  432. the discipline

  433. of God

  434. for his

  435. children

  436. never

  437. involves

  438. his

  439. wrath.

  440. Theodore,

  441. I'm going to

  442. guess Latch

  443. is the way

  444. you pronounce

  445. this very

  446. oddly spelled

  447. last name,

  448. who is an

  449. Old Testament

  450. scholar,

  451. put the point

  452. this way,

  453. God's plans

  454. concerning his

  455. people are

  456. always thoughts

  457. of good,

  458. of blessing.

  459. Even if he

  460. is obliged

  461. to use

  462. the rod,

  463. it is the

  464. rod not

  465. of wrath,

  466. but the

  467. Father's rod

  468. of chastisement

  469. for their

  470. temporal and

  471. eternal welfare.

  472. There is not

  473. a single item

  474. of evil in his

  475. plans for his

  476. people,

  477. neither in their

  478. motive,

  479. nor in their

  480. conception,

  481. nor in their

  482. revelation,

  483. nor in their

  484. consummation.

  485. So we can

  486. read Psalm

  487. 23 this

  488. morning,

  489. and we

  490. can unite

  491. with the

  492. psalmist in

  493. saying that

  494. God's rod

  495. and his

  496. staff are

  497. a comfort

  498. to us.

  499. We can

  500. declare that

  501. he is in

  502. fact the

  503. good shepherd.

  504. So we

  505. should endure

  506. our hardships

  507. as kindnesses

  508. from God,

  509. as helpful

  510. discipline.

  511. And this

  512. discipline takes

  513. three forms.

  514. So we'll

  515. step outside

  516. of the text

  517. just a bit.

  518. I want to

  519. give these

  520. to you

  521. quickly.

  522. Discipline

  523. takes three

  524. forms.

  525. I'll give

  526. you a couple

  527. of Bible

  528. examples for

  529. them.

  530. Number one,

  531. corrective

  532. discipline.

  533. Sometimes we

  534. need to be

  535. shown the

  536. error of

  537. our ways.

  538. We need to

  539. be shown it.

  540. There needs

  541. to be consequence

  542. for our

  543. action.

  544. And we need

  545. to experience

  546. the temporal

  547. consequence of

  548. our sin to

  549. keep us mindful

  550. of its eternal

  551. consequence,

  552. especially if we

  553. are not found

  554. in Christ.

  555. An example

  556. of this is

  557. found in

  558. Paul's letters

  559. to the

  560. Corinthians.

  561. Some of

  562. them were

  563. sick.

  564. Some had

  565. died because

  566. of their

  567. abuse of

  568. the Lord's

  569. Supper.

  570. And Paul

  571. writes in

  572. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  573. chapter 11

  574. and verse

  575. 32,

  576. So God

  577. brings along

  578. corrective

  579. discipline,

  580. helps us to

  581. see that there

  582. is error in

  583. our way.

  584. And there's a

  585. consequence here

  586. and possibly

  587. forever.

  588. Second form

  589. of discipline

  590. is preventive

  591. discipline.

  592. Sometimes we

  593. need to be

  594. kept from

  595. sin by

  596. discipline.

  597. An example

  598. of this is

  599. the humility

  600. God worked

  601. in Paul,

  602. which he

  603. speaks of

  604. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  605. chapter 12

  606. and verse 7,

  607. where he

  608. wrote,

  609. So to

  610. keep me

  611. from becoming

  612. conceited,

  613. there's the

  614. preventive measure

  615. there,

  616. Paul was

  617. kept humble,

  618. right?

  619. He wasn't

  620. allowed to

  621. become conceited,

  622. he goes on,

  623. because of the

  624. surpassing

  625. greatness of

  626. the revelations,

  627. a thorn was

  628. given me

  629. in the flesh,

  630. a messenger

  631. of Satan

  632. to harass

  633. me,

  634. to keep

  635. me from

  636. becoming

  637. conceited.

  638. You see

  639. that Paul

  640. takes this

  641. as a

  642. kindness

  643. from God

  644. on his

  645. behalf.

  646. The third

  647. form that

  648. discipline

  649. takes is

  650. instructive

  651. discipline.

  652. Sometimes

  653. we are

  654. taught lessons

  655. proactively

  656. through

  657. discipline.

  658. This was

  659. the case

  660. for

  661. Job,

  662. who after

  663. enduring

  664. much

  665. suffering

  666. that

  667. was

  668. neither

  669. corrective

  670. or preventative,

  671. he declares

  672. in Job

    Job 42:4

  673. chapter 42

  674. verse 4

  675. and following,

  676. Here I will

  677. speak,

  678. I will

  679. question you,

  680. and you

  681. make it

  682. known to

  683. me.

  684. I had

  685. heard of

  686. you by

  687. the hearing

  688. of the

  689. ear,

  690. but now

  691. my eye

  692. sees you.

  693. Therefore

  694. I despise

  695. myself and

  696. repent in

  697. dust and

  698. ashes.

  699. Through

  700. Job's

  701. suffering

  702. and his

  703. following

  704. dialogue

  705. with God,

  706. he reached

  707. a new

  708. and more

  709. complete

  710. understanding

  711. of his

  712. Lord.

  713. Because

  714. Job was

  715. doing

  716. well,

  717. God

  718. allowed

  719. suffering

  720. so that

  721. Job

  722. would do

  723. all the

  724. more

  725. well.

  726. Much

  727. like an

  728. elite athlete

  729. gets pushed

  730. by a

  731. coach,

  732. those at

  733. the top

  734. of their

  735. game

  736. don't stop

  737. getting

  738. coached.

  739. They get

  740. pushed

  741. further

  742. on.

  743. We are

  744. often

  745. instructed

  746. through

  747. our

  748. hardships.

  749. We must

  750. remember

  751. that the

  752. challenges

  753. of our

  754. lives

  755. are

  756. discipline

  757. that

  758. comes

  759. in one

  760. of these

  761. three

  762. forms

  763. and we

  764. must be

  765. discerning

  766. and sorting

  767. that out

  768. and we

  769. must remember

  770. that it is

  771. loving

  772. and it is

  773. for our

  774. good.

  775. James

  776. Moffat,

  777. who's a

  778. contemporary

  779. commentator,

  780. stated in

  781. his commentary

  782. on this

  783. text,

  784. to endure

  785. rightly,

  786. one must

  787. endure

  788. intelligently

  789. and by

  790. which I

  791. think he

  792. means

  793. mindfully.

  794. If we're

  795. going to

  796. endure the

  797. hardship of

  798. this world,

  799. we must

  800. understand

  801. why it

  802. comes our

  803. way and

  804. the purpose

  805. for it.

  806. Third,

  807. reasons for

  808. sustained

  809. endurance.

  810. We'll see

  811. this in the

  812. last half of

  813. verse 7 and

  814. through the

  815. end of the

  816. text in

  817. verse 11.

  818. The author

  819. gives four

  820. reasons for

  821. sustained

  822. endurance,

  823. beginning

  824. second half

  825. of verse 7

  826. and on.

  827. Number one,

  828. he gives

  829. us a

  830. paternal

  831. reason.

  832. A paternal

  833. reason.

  834. He writes,

  835. God is

  836. treating you

  837. as sons.

  838. For what

  839. son is there

  840. whom his

  841. father does

  842. not discipline?

  843. If you are

  844. left without

  845. discipline in

  846. which we

  847. all have

  848. participated,

  849. then you

  850. are

  851. illegitimate

  852. children and

  853. not sons.

  854. The logic

  855. goes, if

  856. you are

  857. sons, then

  858. you will

  859. receive

  860. discipline.

  861. If you

  862. are not

  863. sons, then

  864. you will

  865. not receive

  866. discipline.

  867. Because this

  868. is true,

  869. we should

  870. not regard

  871. lightly the

  872. discipline of

  873. the Lord,

  874. nor be

  875. weary when

  876. reproved by

  877. him, but

  878. should rather

  879. be encouraged

  880. to press

  881. on by

  882. it.

  883. God loves

  884. us as

  885. our

  886. father.

  887. Second

  888. reason for

  889. sustained

  890. endurance.

  891. It is a

  892. lesser to

  893. greater

  894. reason.

  895. There is a

  896. Latin phrase

  897. I wrote down

  898. and I am not

  899. even going to

  900. try to

  901. pronounce it

  902. for you.

  903. A logical

  904. tool, a

  905. lesser to

  906. greater

  907. argumentation.

  908. The logic

  909. here goes,

  910. if this is

  911. so, then

  912. this must

  913. be even

  914. more so.

  915. He says

  916. in verse

  917. 9,

  918. besides this

  919. we have

  920. had earthly

  921. fathers who

  922. disciplined

  923. us and

  924. we respected

  925. them.

  926. Shall we

  927. not much

  928. more be

  929. subject to

  930. the father

  931. of spirits

  932. and live?

  933. Now I

  934. recognize that

  935. not all of

  936. you have

  937. fathers who

  938. disciplined

  939. you or

  940. disciplined

  941. you well.

  942. You may

  943. not have

  944. had the

  945. type of

  946. respect for

  947. your fathers

  948. that the

  949. author is

  950. here implying.

  951. If that is

  952. the case for

  953. you, I want

  954. you to

  955. know that

  956. he is

  957. speaking in

  958. generalities

  959. and that

  960. the lesson

  961. he is

  962. teaching does

  963. not have

  964. to be

  965. lost on

  966. you because

  967. your frame

  968. of reference

  969. is different

  970. from the

  971. one he

  972. is implying.

  973. So here,

  974. if you

  975. have a

  976. father who

  977. disciplined

  978. you and

  979. you respected

  980. him, or

  981. if you

  982. have ever

  983. noticed a

  984. father who

  985. disciplined

  986. well and

  987. you respected

  988. him, then

  989. how much

  990. more should

  991. you respect

  992. God?

  993. Fathers who

  994. discipline their

  995. children are a

  996. shadow, a

  997. reflection of

  998. our great

  999. God who

  1000. disciplines us

  1001. for our

  1002. good.

  1003. So we

  1004. should much,

  1005. much more

  1006. respect God

  1007. and therefore

  1008. respect his

  1009. loving correction.

  1010. His loving

  1011. correction is

  1012. always perfect.

  1013. It's always

  1014. perfect.

  1015. He does not

  1016. fail the way

  1017. that earthly

  1018. fathers fail.

  1019. And as

  1020. such, therefore,

  1021. it is always

  1022. respectable.

  1023. The third

  1024. reason for

  1025. sustained

  1026. endurance is

  1027. a sanctifying

  1028. reason.

  1029. Verse 10,

  1030. For they,

  1031. these fathers,

  1032. disciplined us

  1033. for a short

  1034. time as it

  1035. seemed best

  1036. to them.

  1037. But he

  1038. disciplines us

  1039. for our

  1040. good that we

  1041. may share

  1042. his holiness.

  1043. It's a

  1044. sanctifying

  1045. reason.

  1046. We've said

  1047. this already

  1048. before,

  1049. but God

  1050. is about

  1051. working in

  1052. our lives,

  1053. aiming us

  1054. to look

  1055. more like

  1056. him.

  1057. Good earthly

  1058. fathers do

  1059. this, right?

  1060. The discipline

  1061. of our

  1062. children is

  1063. aimed at

  1064. making them

  1065. look more

  1066. like our

  1067. children.

  1068. You are

  1069. my son,

  1070. therefore,

  1071. you should

  1072. look like

  1073. this.

  1074. You should

  1075. live like

  1076. this.

  1077. But we

  1078. do this

  1079. so imperfectly

  1080. because we're

  1081. fallen and

  1082. we fail in

  1083. many,

  1084. many respects.

  1085. But our

  1086. heavenly father

  1087. does not

  1088. and never

  1089. does.

  1090. Everything that

  1091. he is working

  1092. is working us

  1093. in the direction

  1094. of looking

  1095. more like

  1096. him so that

  1097. we would

  1098. share his

  1099. holiness.

  1100. And if your

  1101. holiness is not

  1102. the highest aim

  1103. of your living

  1104. in this life,

  1105. then you're

  1106. shooting too

  1107. low.

  1108. If you're

  1109. aiming at

  1110. other things,

  1111. it's not a

  1112. worthy enough

  1113. thing to aim

  1114. at.

  1115. God aims

  1116. as the

  1117. aiming should

  1118. happen.

  1119. He's aiming

  1120. at your

  1121. holiness.

  1122. Romans 8,

  1123. 28 gives

  1124. us some

  1125. direction in

  1126. this.

  1127. I think all

  1128. of you,

  1129. when I say

  1130. Romans 8,

  1131. 28,

  1132. go,

  1133. I know

  1134. this one.

  1135. I got it.

  1136. We know

  1137. that for those

  1138. who love

  1139. God,

  1140. all things

  1141. work together

  1142. for the good

  1143. for those

  1144. who are called

  1145. according to

  1146. his purpose.

  1147. You probably

  1148. dropped the

  1149. last half

  1150. of that

  1151. off of there

  1152. because we

  1153. don't want

  1154. to think

  1155. about what

  1156. God's purpose

  1157. is in the

  1158. good that

  1159. he's working.

  1160. Because really

  1161. we want to

  1162. think about

  1163. our purposes

  1164. in the good

  1165. that God

  1166. is working.

  1167. And so we

  1168. make it into

  1169. this strange

  1170. mystic verse.

  1171. I know it's

  1172. true.

  1173. Everything works

  1174. out.

  1175. Everything for a

  1176. reason.

  1177. And we're

  1178. looking for the

  1179. reason.

  1180. We're trying to

  1181. understand.

  1182. We're giving

  1183. ourselves this

  1184. hope.

  1185. Like, yeah,

  1186. I don't like

  1187. what's happening

  1188. right now.

  1189. But somehow,

  1190. some way,

  1191. yeah,

  1192. it's going to

  1193. be good.

  1194. good.

  1195. The text

  1196. tells us

  1197. the good.

  1198. We don't

  1199. have to

  1200. guess at

  1201. the good.

  1202. The clue

  1203. of that is

  1204. the last part

  1205. of verse 28.

  1206. For those

  1207. who are

  1208. called according

  1209. to his

  1210. purpose.

  1211. What is the

  1212. purpose?

  1213. Verse 29

  1214. tells us.

  1215. For those

  1216. whom he

  1217. foreknew,

  1218. he also

  1219. predestined to

  1220. be conformed

  1221. to the image

  1222. of his

  1223. son.

  1224. That's the

  1225. good that

  1226. he's working

  1227. in your

  1228. life and

  1229. in my

  1230. life if

  1231. we belong

  1232. to him.

  1233. God is

  1234. working all

  1235. things together

  1236. for that

  1237. great and

  1238. highest good.

  1239. Read there.

  1240. Share in his

  1241. holiness that

  1242. we will be

  1243. conformed to

  1244. the image

  1245. of his

  1246. son.

  1247. His son,

  1248. who was

  1249. himself God,

  1250. but was

  1251. fully man and

  1252. submitted himself

  1253. in every way

  1254. to the

  1255. father.

  1256. Our high

  1257. example of

  1258. faithful

  1259. endurance.

  1260. This is

  1261. what he is

  1262. making us

  1263. into.

  1264. And we

  1265. won't arrive

  1266. at it on

  1267. this side

  1268. of glory,

  1269. but we

  1270. are moving

  1271. in that

  1272. direction

  1273. steadily for

  1274. the praise

  1275. of him

  1276. who is

  1277. doing it.

  1278. This is a

  1279. wonderful reason

  1280. to press on.

  1281. A sanctifying

  1282. reason to

  1283. appreciate the

  1284. kind

  1285. corrections

  1286. of God.

  1287. And then

  1288. the fourth

  1289. reason for

  1290. faithful endurance.

  1291. is a

  1292. joy-filled

  1293. reason.

  1294. A joy-filled

  1295. reason.

  1296. Verse 11

  1297. says,

  1298. For the

  1299. moment,

  1300. all discipline

  1301. seems painful

  1302. rather than

  1303. pleasant,

  1304. but later it

  1305. yields the

  1306. peaceful fruit

  1307. of righteousness

  1308. to those

  1309. who have been

  1310. trained by it.

  1311. The author

  1312. recognizes that

  1313. there is a

  1314. disconnect

  1315. between the

  1316. experience of

  1317. discipline and

  1318. the reality

  1319. of discipline.

  1320. He notes

  1321. that for the

  1322. moment,

  1323. all discipline

  1324. seems painful

  1325. rather than

  1326. pleasant.

  1327. He knows

  1328. that it

  1329. hurts.

  1330. He has

  1331. experienced

  1332. that hurt,

  1333. and he

  1334. sympathizes with

  1335. us in that.

  1336. But,

  1337. by implication,

  1338. it yields

  1339. pleasantness.

  1340. In the

  1341. moment,

  1342. he says,

  1343. it's painful,

  1344. but it

  1345. will

  1346. yield

  1347. pleasantness,

  1348. which he

  1349. calls the

  1350. peaceful

  1351. fruit

  1352. of

  1353. righteousness.

  1354. Doesn't

  1355. that sound

  1356. wonderful?

  1357. In the

  1358. midst of

  1359. trial,

  1360. you're

  1361. sailing the

  1362. sea of this

  1363. life,

  1364. and it is

  1365. getting rocked

  1366. by the

  1367. storms of

  1368. this world.

  1369. In the

  1370. midst of

  1371. temptation,

  1372. doesn't

  1373. that,

  1374. the

  1375. peaceful

  1376. fruit

  1377. of

  1378. righteousness

  1379. steady you?

  1380. We can

  1381. be

  1382. steadied.

  1383. We are

  1384. steadied by

  1385. our loving

  1386. God as

  1387. he trains

  1388. us to

  1389. yield this

  1390. in our

  1391. lives.

  1392. Isaiah

    Isaiah 32:16

  1393. chapter 32

  1394. verse 16

  1395. and 17

  1396. says,

  1397. justice

  1398. will dwell

  1399. in the

  1400. wilderness

  1401. and righteousness

  1402. abide in

  1403. the fruitful

  1404. field,

  1405. and the

  1406. effect of

  1407. righteousness

  1408. be peace,

  1409. and the

  1410. result of

  1411. righteousness

  1412. quietness

  1413. and trust

  1414. forever.

  1415. I love

  1416. that.

  1417. I love

  1418. that.

  1419. The effect

  1420. of righteousness

  1421. will be

  1422. peace,

  1423. and the

  1424. result of

  1425. righteousness

  1426. quietness

  1427. and trust

  1428. forever.

  1429. So hold

  1430. up and

  1431. hold on.

  1432. love.

  1433. We have

  1434. a loving

  1435. God who

  1436. disciplines

  1437. us for

  1438. the sake

  1439. of faithful

  1440. endurance.

  1441. Beloved,

  1442. it is because

  1443. he loves

  1444. you.

  1445. Trials of

  1446. this life

  1447. are not

  1448. outside of

  1449. his control.

  1450. They're being

  1451. brought your

  1452. way,

  1453. whatever it

  1454. is,

  1455. for your

  1456. good.

  1457. May we be

  1458. those who

  1459. declare,

  1460. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1461. chapter 10

  1462. and verse

  1463. 39.

  1464. We are

  1465. not of

  1466. those who

  1467. shrink back

  1468. and are

  1469. destroyed,

  1470. but of

  1471. those who

  1472. have faith

  1473. and preserve

  1474. their souls.

  1475. Let's pray

  1476. together.
