  1. So our text this morning, as Nathan said, is Matthew 22, verses 34 through 30.

  2. So let's start by reading our text.

  3. This is the Word of God, and it reads,

  4. But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.

  5. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him.

  6. Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

  7. And he said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

  8. This is the great and first commandment.

  9. And the second is like it.

  10. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  11. On these two commands depend all the law and the prophets.

  12. So today's passage answers one of the most basic questions of Christian living.

  13. What does God desire of mankind?

  14. If we can perfectly obey the two commands that are given here throughout our lives perfectly, we will fulfill the law.

  15. That's what Jesus is teaching.

  16. No one but the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, has been able to do so.

  17. And as we'll see today, loving God and others in this way requires a whole self-devotion to God and to his work at all times.

  18. So my goal for this morning is for us to grow in our understanding of what these two commands actually require of us,

  19. that we may understand the heart of God in a more real sense, greater treasure, the atoning work of Christ,

  20. who perfectly fulfilled the law and imputed his righteousness to his people,

  21. and therefore grow in our ability to display the love we have for one another in a tangible way.

  22. So to do so, we'll take a look at this text in four points, and I'll refer back to them as we go.

  23. But it'll be the context, the question, the commands, and the connection, and the connection between those two commands.

  24. So firstly, let's look at our first main point, the context.

  25. So this passage in Matthew 22 has zoomed into the last week of Jesus' life.

  26. He has made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives.

  27. He has driven out the money changers, and the next morning he curses the fig tree.

  28. It withers immediately, according to Matthew's account, and he enters the temple again to teach.

  29. We read in chapter 21,

  30. When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to him as he was teaching,

  31. and said, By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?

  32. So the question that this particular leader asks is in the context of Jesus coming into the temple,

  33. teaching, and his authority being challenged.

  34. So Jesus' following teaching is bookended by two simple questions that they cannot or will not answer.

  35. And these questions expose the religious leaders' hypocrisy and ignorance of the law.

  36. So the first question, what Jesus directly responds to this challenge,

  37. he asks them where John the Baptist's baptism came from.

  38. And they discuss it among themselves, as it says in chapter 21.

  39. And if they said from heaven, Jesus would say to them,

  40. Why then do you not believe?

  41. But if they say from man, they are afraid of the crowds, for they all hold that John was a prophet.

  42. So they answer Jesus, We do not know.

  43. And he said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  44. And then on the other end, after our teaching, following our text,

  45. Christ asks them how the Messiah, as the son of David, is referred to by David as my Lord,

  46. which, again, they cannot or will not give an answer.

  47. So in between these two bookends, we find three parables that are specifically targeting the religious leaders

  48. who have come to challenge him.

  49. And then we find three questions asked of Jesus in order to test him.

  50. So in summary, we first have the parable of the two sons,

  51. where Jesus concludes in verse 31 of chapter 21,

  52. The tax collectors and prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you, these religious leaders.

  53. And then we have the parable of the tenants and the parable of the wedding feasts,

  54. both showing the betrayal of Israel's leaders of God's original plan,

  55. accusing them of killing his messengers and denying his son.

  56. We know that these Jewish leaders understand that Christ is speaking about them,

  57. and they want to arrest him, but again, they fear the crowds.

  58. So instead, they resort to outsmarting him.

  59. So after, of course, they are unable to do this,

  60. we know that they eventually abandon this plan of outsmarting Jesus

  61. and instead bring false witnesses against Christ and convict him of crimes that he didn't commit

  62. and would crucify him on the cross.

  63. But they're not quite to that point yet.

  64. They're first trying to shame him or trip him up in his words.

  65. So our text this morning is the third in a series of questions that the leaders are asking.

  66. And Jesus takes the opportunity to teach about three fundamental relationships.

  67. So firstly, we see the Pharisees joining the Herodians,

  68. asking about our relationship with government,

  69. to which Jesus answers,

  70. render to Caesar that which is Caesar's.

  71. Then we see the Sadducees asking a question about the afterlife,

  72. to which Jesus answers,

  73. there is no marriage in the afterlife,

  74. and God is not a God of the dead,

  75. but of the living,

  76. thus confirming the resurrection.

  77. And then we have our text,

  78. where the Pharisees send a scribe or a lawyer

  79. concerning the relationship between man and the law.

  80. So that's the context of our passage this morning.

  81. Let's take a look at the question asked to test Jesus.

  82. So this question is asked by a lawyer or a scribe.

  83. And so this type of Pharisee

  84. would have had little to do with actually leading the people or teaching,

  85. but was more of an academic expert on the law.

  86. So this question is clearly meant to test Jesus,

  87. but if you read Mark's account of the same story in chapter 12,

  88. he seems to have a bit more of a positive impression.

  89. So we know that this Pharisee is trying to test Jesus,

  90. but at the same time,

  91. we also see him in some ways in Mark's account,

  92. genuinely seeking after wisdom.

  93. No matter this particular scribe's intent,

  94. we do know that some of the Jewish leaders were converted,

  95. or at least some came to Christ in humility,

  96. seeking to learn Nicodemus being one example of those.

  97. Now, as he asks our Lord,

  98. which is the greatest commandment?

  99. He's not simply asking,

  100. which is the first command among many that we should obey?

  101. Rather, he's asking,

  102. which is the preeminent command that informs all the others?

  103. The great command is in a category of its own.

  104. So we can know this from a couple of different points.

  105. Firstly, from Jesus's response,

  106. and then if you read the scribe's response in Mark's account,

  107. this is the question that he is asking.

  108. We also know from the rabbinic tradition,

  109. the rabbis held that there were 613 commands

  110. found in the Pentateuch,

  111. the first five books of Moses' teaching,

  112. one command for each letter in the Ten Commandments.

  113. 248 of these commands were positive in nature,

  114. asking us to do something,

  115. whereas 365 were negative or forbidding in nature.

  116. So as a shortcut,

  117. the rabbis would categorize these commands

  118. into heavier commands

  119. and into lighter commands

  120. so that they could focus on the heaviest

  121. and not worry so much on the light ones.

  122. And there was an ongoing disagreement among the rabbis,

  123. which were the heavy ones,

  124. which were the light ones,

  125. and which was the heaviest of them all.

  126. So this scribe was asking Jesus

  127. a commonly disputed question.

  128. Now, likely what was happening in the rabbis' minds

  129. is that they were trying to take a shortcut on God's law.

  130. They were trying to see

  131. what was the least amount of effort

  132. that they could put in

  133. to feel or to be justified before God

  134. in their minds.

  135. We have a tendency in this direction as well,

  136. and we know that this contradicts

  137. James' later teaching

  138. that falling short at one point in the law

  139. renders us guilty under the whole law.

  140. So let's take a look at Jesus' response

  141. in our third main point.

  142. We'll, of course,

  143. spend a little bit more time here

  144. and in the next one,

  145. the two commands.

  146. So firstly,

  147. I want to address these commands separately,

  148. and then we'll examine

  149. the connection between them

  150. since that's kind of the main point

  151. of what Jesus is saying here.

  152. So firstly,

  153. sub-point A,

  154. if you're taking notes,

  155. we'll look at the great command.

  156. So as many of you know,

  157. Jesus is quoting here

  158. from the Shema

  159. found in Deuteronomy chapter 6,

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  160. which reads,

  161. you shall love the Lord your God

  162. with all your heart,

  163. with all your soul,

  164. and with all your strength.

  165. In Matthew's account,

  166. we find all of your mind,

  167. and in Mark's account,

  168. we find all of your mind

  169. and strength.

  170. And I'll address that apparent discrepancy

  171. here in a second.

  172. But this was certainly

  173. the most precious

  174. of Jewish scriptures.

  175. They would have said this

  176. at least twice a day.

  177. They had it written

  178. on their doorposts,

  179. and the Pharisees

  180. literally wore it

  181. on their foreheads

  182. and tiny scrolls rolled up

  183. in their phylacteries.

  184. So it was already

  185. a strong candidate

  186. for the great command

  187. in the Jewish mind.

  188. Now as we look at this,

  189. I don't want to focus

  190. on the love part just yet,

  191. but I'd like to look at

  192. some other aspects

  193. of this text.

  194. So firstly,

  195. let's briefly unpack

  196. what we are supposed

  197. to love God with.

  198. Our heart

  199. and our soul

  200. and this third thing,

  201. either strength,

  202. mind,

  203. or mind,

  204. and strength.

  205. Before we do this,

  206. I want to recommend

  207. the series

  208. by the Bible Project,

  209. which some of you

  210. are probably familiar with

  211. on the Shema.

  212. It's kind of a word study

  213. on some of these

  214. different words.

  215. It's where I got

  216. a lot of the information here.

  217. But of course,

  218. the videos add

  219. some visual aids as well.

  220. So firstly,

  221. loving God

  222. with our heart.

  223. The Jewish people

  224. understood this concept

  225. differently

  226. than the modern

  227. American understanding

  228. of the heart.

  229. Typically,

  230. when we say heart,

  231. we primarily are referring

  232. to our feelings

  233. or our affections.

  234. And while the Hebrew

  235. understanding would have

  236. included these two things,

  237. it would have

  238. accomplished,

  239. accomplished,

  240. encompass,

  241. sorry,

  242. much more.

  243. In the words of Tim Mackey,

  244. the Israelites would have

  245. had no concept

  246. of the brain

  247. or mind

  248. or even any word

  249. for it.

  250. They imagine

  251. that all humans'

  252. intellectual activity

  253. takes place

  254. in the heart.

  255. So this is likely

  256. why both New Testament

  257. accounts add

  258. the word mind.

  259. The Greeks

  260. had a concept

  261. of the mind

  262. somewhat separate

  263. from the heart

  264. while the Hebrew

  265. language did not.

  266. And I was curious

  267. about this

  268. because I had

  269. heard this claim

  270. and so I went

  271. through my little

  272. Blue Letter Bible app

  273. and was looking

  274. for the Old Testament

  275. references to mind

  276. and I couldn't find

  277. any where the actual

  278. Hebrew language

  279. used the word mind.

  280. oftentimes it would

  281. have been more

  282. literally translated

  283. as some other

  284. part of the body

  285. or sometimes

  286. a better translation

  287. might have been

  288. heart in that case.

  289. So this means

  290. that we can know

  291. something with our

  292. hearts.

  293. As the book of

  294. Proverbs says,

  295. wisdom and discernment

  296. come from the heart

  297. and we know that

  298. it's the source

  299. of our choices

  300. and desires

  301. in the biblical context.

  302. Like the phrases

  303. that we desire

  304. something in our heart

  305. or we had it

  306. in our heart

  307. to make this

  308. or that choice

  309. as we see

  310. in scripture.

  311. So we can understand

  312. the heart

  313. as the all-encompassing

  314. essence of our

  315. inner being.

  316. The source of our

  317. physical life,

  318. our emotions,

  319. our desires,

  320. our choices

  321. and our thoughts.

  322. So to love God

  323. with our heart

  324. is much more

  325. than just

  326. our feelings

  327. and affections

  328. but our entire

  329. inner being.

  330. So next

  331. let's look at

  332. the word soul.

  333. Again,

  334. when we think

  335. of the word soul

  336. we tend to think

  337. a little bit differently

  338. than how the Hebrew

  339. authors would have

  340. written it

  341. and thought about it.

  342. Typically,

  343. we kind of defer

  344. back to the Greek

  345. philosophical concept

  346. of the soul

  347. which is like

  348. this non-physical

  349. essence

  350. which will be

  351. released from

  352. its imprisonment

  353. in our body

  354. upon our death.

  355. Now this is not

  356. what the word means

  357. in Hebrew

  358. and it's not

  359. what the Hebrew

  360. authors

  361. how they would

  362. have put it

  363. in Shema.

  364. Literally,

  365. this word

  366. the Hebrew

  367. is nefesh

  368. and it means

  369. throat

  370. but just like

  371. the concept

  372. of the heart

  373. has both

  374. physical

  375. and deeper

  376. metaphorical meaning.

  377. It can refer

  378. to the person

  379. as a whole.

  380. Both humans

  381. and animals

  382. are spoken of

  383. as living

  384. nefesh

  385. or souls

  386. and once

  387. something dies

  388. it is a

  389. dead nefesh

  390. which we don't

  391. really have

  392. the concept

  393. of a dead

  394. soul

  395. in the

  396. American

  397. mind.

  398. So we don't

  399. have a nefesh

  400. or a soul

  401. rather we

  402. are a soul

  403. a physical

  404. being

  405. so to love

  406. God with

  407. all our soul

  408. in the sense

  409. is to do

  410. so with all

  411. of our being

  412. all of our

  413. body

  414. our personhood

  415. or our

  416. essence.

  417. So next

  418. let's look

  419. at the word

  420. strength.

  421. Of the three

  422. this is probably

  423. the worst

  424. translated

  425. into English.

  426. So in the

  427. Hebrew

  428. this word

  429. is

  430. miod

  431. literally

  432. it means

  433. very

  434. or much

  435. it's an

  436. adverb

  437. specifically

  438. an intensifier

  439. so it makes

  440. another word

  441. mean more

  442. of itself

  443. like

  444. very

  445. big.

  446. So a better

  447. translation might

  448. be with all

  449. of our

  450. umph

  451. our power

  452. gumption

  453. fervency

  454. or zealousness

  455. but again

  456. Tim Mackey

  457. prefers with all

  458. of our

  459. muchness.

  460. He says

  461. this final

  462. thing that you

  463. used to love

  464. God isn't

  465. a thing

  466. at all

  467. it's

  468. everything

  469. devoting

  470. every

  471. opportunity

  472. possibility

  473. and

  474. capacity

  475. that you

  476. have to

  477. honoring

  478. God.

  479. This word

  480. again is

  481. all

  482. encompassing

  483. and implies

  484. that every

  485. single part

  486. of our

  487. life

  488. gives us

  489. an opportunity

  490. to demonstrate

  491. love to

  492. God

  493. or as Paul

  494. says in

  495. 1 Corinthians

  496. 10

  497. whether you

  498. eat or

  499. drink or

  500. whatever you

  501. do

  502. do all

  503. to the

  504. glory

  505. of God.

  506. So to sum

  507. this up

  508. I'd like

  509. to read

  510. a Matthew

  511. Henry

  512. quote

  513. which

  514. again sums

  515. up this

  516. idea of

  517. loving God

  518. with all

  519. of these

  520. things.

  521. He says

  522. we must

  523. highly

  524. esteem

  525. him

  526. be well

  527. pleased

  528. that there

  529. is such

  530. a being

  531. well pleased

  532. in his

  533. attributes

  534. his

  535. relations

  536. to us

  537. our

  538. desire

  539. must be

  540. towards

  541. him

  542. our

  543. delight

  544. in

  545. him

  546. our

  547. dependence

  548. upon

  549. him

  550. and to

  551. him

  552. we must

  553. be

  554. entirely

  555. devoted.

  556. It must

  557. be a

  558. constant

  559. pleasure

  560. to us

  561. to think

  562. of him

  563. to hear

  564. from him

  565. to speak

  566. to him

  567. and to

  568. serve

  569. him

  570. we must

  571. love

  572. him.

  573. Secondly

  574. I'd like

  575. to look at

  576. another aspect

  577. of the

  578. Shema

  579. the concept

  580. of

  581. unity.

  582. So while

  583. it may

  584. not

  585. appear

  586. glaringly

  587. on the

  588. surface

  589. the concept

  590. of unity

  591. is in

  592. the center

  593. of this

  594. command.

  595. So listen

  596. to the

  597. words from

  598. Deuteronomy

  599. which are

  600. included

  601. in our

  602. text

  603. that are

  604. found

  605. in

  606. Mark's

  607. rendering.

  608. Before

  609. this

  610. command

  611. that Jesus

  612. refers

  613. to

  614. we have

  615. this

  616. preface

  617. of these

  618. words

  619. before

  620. hear

  621. O

  622. Israel

  623. the

  624. Lord

  625. is

  626. our

  627. God

  628. the

  629. Lord

  630. is

  631. one.

  632. While

  633. in

  634. isolation

  635. this

  636. oneness

  637. or unity

  638. in the

  639. person

  640. of God

  641. may seem

  642. like it's

  643. insignificant.

  644. But once

  645. we place

  646. this next

  647. to our

  648. disunity

  649. or

  650. disintegration

  651. of the

  652. self

  653. it takes

  654. on a

  655. new meaning.

  656. So I'd like

  657. to look at

  658. a couple

  659. of passages

  660. that demonstrate

  661. this.

  662. Firstly

  663. James

  664. chapter

  665. three.

  666. You can

  667. turn

  668. there

  669. if you

  670. want

  671. to

  672. but

  673. you

  674. can

  675. just

  676. listen.

  677. James

  678. three

  679. it says

  680. verse

  681. eight

  682. no human

  683. being

  684. can tame

  685. the tongue

  686. it is a

  687. restless

  688. evil

  689. full of

  690. deadly

  691. poison

  692. with it

  693. we bless

  694. our

  695. Lord

  696. and

  697. father

  698. and

  699. with

  700. it

  701. we

  702. curse

  703. people

  704. who

  705. are

  706. made

  707. in

  708. the

  709. likeness

  710. of

  711. God

  712. from

  713. the

  714. same

  715. mouth

  716. come

  717. blessing

  718. and

  719. cursing

  720. my

  721. brothers

  722. these

  723. things

  724. ought

  725. not

  726. to

  727. be

  728. so

  729. we

  730. have

  731. a

  732. division

  733. in

  734. ourselves

  735. between

  736. what

  737. we

  738. say

  739. at

  740. one

  741. time

  742. and

  743. what

  744. we

  745. say

  746. at

  747. another

  748. time

  749. and

  750. then

  751. Romans

  752. 7

  753. is

  754. the

  755. classic

  756. passage

  757. on

  758. this

  759. topic

  760. Romans

  761. 7

  762. 15

  763. Paul

  764. writing

  765. I do

  766. not

  767. understand

  768. my

  769. own

  770. actions

  771. for

  772. I

  773. do

  774. not

  775. do

  776. what

  777. I

  778. want

  779. but

  780. I

  781. do

  782. the

  783. very

  784. thing

  785. that

  786. I

  787. hate

  788. for

  789. I

  790. have

  791. the

  792. desire

  793. to

  794. do

  795. what

  796. is

  797. right

  798. but

  799. not

  800. the

  801. ability

  802. to

  803. carry

  804. it

  805. out

  806. for

  807. I

  808. do

  809. not

  810. do

  811. the

  812. good

  813. I

  814. want

  815. but

  816. the

  817. evil

  818. I

  819. do

  820. not

  821. want

  822. is

  823. what

  824. I

  825. keep

  826. on

  827. doing

  828. so

  829. again

  830. there's

  831. a

  832. disconnect

  833. between

  834. our

  835. desires

  836. and

  837. then

  838. what

  839. our

  840. actions

  841. actually

  842. manifest

  843. and

  844. then

  845. in

  846. Jeremiah

  847. 17

  848. classic

  849. text

  850. verse

  851. 9

  852. the heart

  853. is

  854. deceitful

  855. above

  856. all

  857. things

  858. and

  859. desperately

  860. sick

  861. so

  862. even

  863. as

  864. believers

  865. our

  866. affections

  867. desires

  868. words

  869. choices

  870. intentions

  871. actions

  872. feelings

  873. and

  874. thoughts

  875. can

  876. be

  877. fickle

  878. and

  879. fleeting

  880. they

  881. can

  882. contradict

  883. one

  884. another

  885. and

  886. they

  887. can

  888. wax

  889. and

  890. wane

  891. and

  892. furbously

  893. and

  894. in fact

  895. in

  896. my

  897. experience

  898. this

  899. is

  900. the

  901. main

  902. problem

  903. of

  904. the

  905. Christian

  906. life

  907. what

  908. we

  909. know

  910. to

  911. be

  912. true

  913. and

  914. what

  915. we're

  916. able

  917. to

  918. put

  919. into

  920. practice

  921. are

  922. so

  923. often

  924. disjointed

  925. but

  926. as

  927. Psalm

  928. 115

  929. proclaims

  930. our

  931. Lord

  932. is in

  933. the

  934. heavens

  935. he

  936. does

  937. all

  938. that

  939. he

  940. pleases

  941. God

  942. is

  943. perfectly

  944. effective

  945. in

  946. every

  947. action

  948. we

  949. are

  950. woefully

  951. disparate

  952. and

  953. disjointed

  954. but

  955. the

  956. Lord

  957. is

  958. one

  959. so

  960. this

  961. adds

  962. yet

  963. another

  964. layer

  965. of

  966. meaning

  967. to

  968. the

  969. great

  970. command

  971. be

  972. united

  973. as

  974. the

  975. Lord

  976. is

  977. love

  978. him

  979. with

  980. all

  981. of

  982. your

  983. heart

  984. not

  985. part

  986. of

  987. your

  988. heart

  989. here

  990. and

  991. part

  992. of

  993. your

  994. heart

  995. somewhere

  996. else

  997. all

  998. of

  999. your

  1000. soul

  1001. and

  1002. all

  1003. of

  1004. your

  1005. muchness

  1006. be

  1007. complete

  1008. united

  1009. in

  1010. all

  1011. of

  1012. your

  1013. being

  1014. to

  1015. the

  1016. singular

  1017. purpose

  1018. of

  1019. loving

  1020. the

  1021. Lord

  1022. so

  1023. how

  1024. do

  1025. we

  1026. show

  1027. love

  1028. to

  1029. God

  1030. our

  1031. next

  1032. sub

  1033. point

  1034. sub

  1035. point

  1036. C

  1037. for

  1038. taking

  1039. notes

  1040. how

  1041. do

  1042. we

  1043. love

  1044. God

  1045. it

  1046. can

  1047. seem

  1048. overwhelming

  1049. at

  1050. times

  1051. to feel

  1052. the need

  1053. to

  1054. reciprocate

  1055. the

  1056. love

  1057. that

  1058. God

  1059. has

  1060. shown

  1061. to

  1062. us

  1063. with

  1064. a

  1065. deep

  1066. emotionality

  1067. and

  1068. close

  1069. connection

  1070. with

  1071. him

  1072. these

  1073. intense

  1074. feelings

  1075. should

  1076. be

  1077. there

  1078. to

  1079. some

  1080. degree

  1081. and

  1082. sometimes

  1083. but

  1084. the

  1085. biblical

  1086. writers

  1087. certainly

  1088. didn't

  1089. feel

  1090. this

  1091. all

  1092. the

  1093. time

  1094. and

  1095. needed

  1096. to

  1097. remind

  1098. themselves

  1099. of

  1100. the

  1101. truth

  1102. we

  1103. can

  1104. never

  1105. show

  1106. the

  1107. same

  1108. love

  1109. for

  1110. God

  1111. as

  1112. he

  1113. has

  1114. demonstrated

  1115. to

  1116. us

  1117. he

  1118. requires

  1119. something

  1120. much

  1121. simpler

  1122. of

  1123. us

  1124. it's

  1125. not

  1126. incredibly

  1127. complex

  1128. very

  1129. hard

  1130. to

  1131. carry

  1132. out

  1133. but

  1134. simple

  1135. in

  1136. concept

  1137. Solomon

  1138. writes

  1139. in

  1140. Ecclesiastes

  1141. 12

  1142. the end

  1143. of the

  1144. matter

  1145. all

  1146. has

  1147. been

  1148. heard

  1149. fear

  1150. God

  1151. and

  1152. keep

  1153. his

  1154. commandments

  1155. for

  1156. this

  1157. is

  1158. the

  1159. whole

  1160. duty

  1161. of

  1162. man

  1163. or

  1164. as

  1165. John

  1166. writes

  1167. in

  1168. 1st

  1169. John

  1170. 5

  1171. 3

  1172. this

  1173. is

  1174. the

  1175. love

  1176. of

  1177. God

  1178. that

  1179. we

  1180. keep

  1181. his

  1182. commandments

  1183. and

  1184. his

  1185. commandments

  1186. are

  1187. not

  1188. burdensome

  1189. or

  1190. as

  1191. Jesus

  1192. says

  1193. simply

  1194. in

  1195. John

  1196. 14

  1197. 15

  1198. if

  1199. you

  1200. love

  1201. me

  1202. you

  1203. will

  1204. keep

  1205. my

  1206. commandments

  1207. now

  1208. this

  1209. phrase

  1210. is

  1211. repeated

  1212. in

  1213. one

  1214. form

  1215. or

  1216. 15

  1217. of

  1218. John's

  1219. gospel

  1220. alone

  1221. so

  1222. loving

  1223. God

  1224. means

  1225. keeping

  1226. his

  1227. commandments

  1228. now

  1229. it's

  1230. not

  1231. just

  1232. this

  1233. outward

  1234. thing

  1235. but

  1236. it's

  1237. the

  1238. outward

  1239. manifestation

  1240. of

  1241. the

  1242. love

  1243. that's

  1244. occurring

  1245. on

  1246. the

  1247. inside

  1248. this

  1249. by itself

  1250. may seem

  1251. like it's

  1252. a plea

  1253. for a

  1254. dry

  1255. piety

  1256. a

  1257. legalistic

  1258. or

  1259. robotic

  1260. type

  1261. of

  1262. living

  1263. however

  1264. in the

  1265. context

  1266. of what

  1267. we have

  1268. observed

  1269. in the

  1270. Shema

  1271. consider

  1272. what it

  1273. means

  1274. for us

  1275. to obey

  1276. God's

  1277. commands

  1278. every

  1279. last

  1280. one

  1281. with

  1282. all

  1283. of

  1284. our

  1285. heart

  1286. our

  1287. soul

  1288. and

  1289. our

  1290. muchness

  1291. all

  1292. our

  1293. affections

  1294. emotions

  1295. desires

  1296. choices

  1297. physical

  1298. body

  1299. mental

  1300. energy

  1301. essence

  1302. and

  1303. fervency

  1304. united

  1305. together

  1306. to keep

  1307. his

  1308. commands

  1309. since

  1310. they are

  1311. the desired

  1312. expression

  1313. of our

  1314. love

  1315. for

  1316. God

  1317. first

  1318. John

  1319. the

  1320. passage

  1321. that we

  1322. just read

  1323. earlier

  1324. said that

  1325. these

  1326. commands

  1327. would not

  1328. be

  1329. burdensome

  1330. and

  1331. Jesus

  1332. says

  1333. here

  1334. in

  1335. John

  1336. 15

  1337. in

  1338. the same

  1339. chunk of

  1340. teaching

  1341. if you

  1342. keep

  1343. my

  1344. commands

  1345. you

  1346. will

  1347. abide

  1348. in

  1349. my

  1350. love

  1351. these

  1352. things

  1353. I

  1354. have

  1355. spoken

  1356. to

  1357. you

  1358. that

  1359. my

  1360. joy

  1361. may

  1362. be

  1363. in

  1364. you

  1365. and

  1366. that

  1367. your

  1368. joy

  1369. may

  1370. be

  1371. full

  1372. so

  1373. this

  1374. is not

  1375. dry

  1376. root

  1377. obedience

  1378. to avoid

  1379. punishment

  1380. like

  1381. when

  1382. you're

  1383. watching

  1384. TV

  1385. or

  1386. playing

  1387. outside

  1388. as a

  1389. child

  1390. and

  1391. your

  1392. mom

  1393. tells

  1394. you

  1395. to

  1396. clean

  1397. your

  1398. room

  1399. rather

  1400. this

  1401. is

  1402. purpose

  1403. fulfilling

  1404. satisfying

  1405. joy

  1406. giving

  1407. action

  1408. rooted

  1409. in

  1410. deep

  1411. trust

  1412. in

  1413. the

  1414. rule

  1415. giver

  1416. that

  1417. he

  1418. has

  1419. designed

  1420. us

  1421. and

  1422. therefore

  1423. he

  1424. knows

  1425. what's

  1426. best

  1427. for

  1428. us

  1429. he

  1430. has

  1431. commanded

  1432. that

  1433. which

  1434. will

  1435. give

  1436. us

  1437. the

  1438. most

  1439. joy

  1440. and

  1441. satisfaction

  1442. so

  1443. this

  1444. concept

  1445. is

  1446. the

  1447. reason

  1448. for

  1449. David's

  1450. epic

  1451. psalm

  1452. 119

  1453. which

  1454. over

  1455. and

  1456. over

  1457. demonstrate

  1458. his

  1459. deep

  1460. desire

  1461. to

  1462. know

  1463. and

  1464. obey

  1465. the

  1466. commands

  1467. of

  1468. God

  1469. now

  1470. I

  1471. could

  1472. have

  1473. chosen

  1474. any

  1475. stanza

  1476. to read

  1477. from

  1478. in

  1479. psalm

  1480. 119

  1481. but

  1482. this

  1483. one

  1484. stuck

  1485. out

  1486. as I

  1487. was

  1488. beginning

  1489. to read

  1490. through

  1491. it

  1492. this

  1493. would

  1494. be

  1495. in

  1496. verses

  1497. 9

  1498. through

  1499. 16

  1500. this

  1501. is

  1502. again

  1503. just

  1504. an

  1505. example

  1506. of

  1507. this

  1508. connection

  1509. between

  1510. loving

  1511. God

  1512. and loving

  1513. his

  1514. word

  1515. and his

  1516. commands

  1517. and his

  1518. statutes

  1519. all

  1520. synonyms

  1521. for the

  1522. same

  1523. thing

  1524. so it

  1525. reads

  1526. how can

  1527. a young

  1528. man

  1529. keep

  1530. his

  1531. way

  1532. pure

  1533. by

  1534. guarding

  1535. it

  1536. according

  1537. to

  1538. your

  1539. word

  1540. with

  1541. my

  1542. whole

  1543. heart

  1544. I

  1545. seek

  1546. you

  1547. let

  1548. me

  1549. not

  1550. wonder

  1551. from

  1552. your

  1553. commandments

  1554. I've

  1555. stored

  1556. up

  1557. your

  1558. word

  1559. in

  1560. my

  1561. heart

  1562. that

  1563. I

  1564. might

  1565. not

  1566. sin

  1567. against

  1568. you

  1569. blessed

  1570. are

  1571. you

  1572. O

  1573. Lord

  1574. teach

  1575. me

  1576. your

  1577. statutes

  1578. with

  1579. my

  1580. lips

  1581. I

  1582. declare

  1583. all

  1584. the

  1585. rules

  1586. of

  1587. your

  1588. mouth

  1589. and fix

  1590. my

  1591. eyes

  1592. on

  1593. your

  1594. ways

  1595. I

  1596. will

  1597. delight

  1598. in

  1599. your

  1600. statutes

  1601. I

  1602. will

  1603. not

  1604. forget

  1605. your

  1606. word

  1607. some

  1608. of us

  1609. seriously

  1610. need to

  1611. question

  1612. whether

  1613. we

  1614. believe

  1615. what

  1616. David

  1617. believed

  1618. about

  1619. God's

  1620. commands

  1621. or if

  1622. our

  1623. understanding

  1624. is more

  1625. like a

  1626. child

  1627. being

  1628. required

  1629. to

  1630. clean

  1631. his

  1632. or

  1633. her

  1634. room

  1635. so

  1636. let's

  1637. look at

  1638. this

  1639. second

  1640. great

  1641. command

  1642. love

  1643. your

  1644. neighbor

  1645. it'll

  1646. be a

  1647. bit

  1648. shorter

  1649. in

  1650. response

  1651. to the

  1652. question

  1653. on

  1654. which

  1655. do

  1656. all

  1657. the

  1658. other

  1659. commands

  1660. rely

  1661. Jesus

  1662. answers

  1663. with

  1664. two

  1665. the

  1666. second

  1667. love

  1668. your

  1669. neighbor

  1670. as

  1671. yourself

  1672. is

  1673. cited

  1674. from

  1675. again

  1676. the

  1677. Torah

  1678. Leviticus

  1679. 19

  1680. 18

  1681. and is

  1682. placed

  1683. in the

  1684. same

  1685. category

  1686. as

  1687. the

  1688. Shema

  1689. by

  1690. Jesus

  1691. like

  1692. the

  1693. Shema

  1694. in

  1695. that

  1696. many

  1697. other

  1698. commands

  1699. are summed

  1700. up

  1701. in

  1702. these

  1703. words

  1704. all

  1705. commands

  1706. falling

  1707. into

  1708. one

  1709. of

  1710. these

  1711. two

  1712. categories

  1713. so

  1714. if

  1715. we're

  1716. able

  1717. to

  1718. fulfill

  1719. the

  1720. command

  1721. love

  1722. your

  1723. neighbor

  1724. as

  1725. yourself

  1726. we'll

  1727. be

  1728. fulfilling

  1729. every

  1730. command

  1731. that

  1732. involves

  1733. relationship

  1734. with

  1735. one

  1736. another

  1737. Paul

  1738. writes

  1739. in

  1740. Romans

  1741. 13

  1742. the

  1743. commandments

  1744. you shall

  1745. not

  1746. commit

  1747. adultery

  1748. you shall

  1749. not

  1750. murder

  1751. you shall

  1752. not

  1753. steal

  1754. you shall

  1755. not

  1756. covet

  1757. and any

  1758. other

  1759. commandment

  1760. are summed

  1761. up in

  1762. this

  1763. word

  1764. love

  1765. your

  1766. neighbor

  1767. as

  1768. yourself

  1769. so

  1770. what

  1771. does

  1772. this

  1773. command

  1774. mean

  1775. many

  1776. have

  1777. used

  1778. it

  1779. to

  1780. say

  1781. that

  1782. we

  1783. can't

  1784. truly

  1785. love

  1786. others

  1787. until

  1788. we

  1789. first

  1790. love

  1791. ourselves

  1792. the

  1793. thinking

  1794. goes

  1795. like

  1796. this

  1797. our

  1798. capacity

  1799. to

  1800. love

  1801. others

  1802. is

  1803. increased

  1804. as

  1805. our

  1806. capacity

  1807. to

  1808. love

  1809. ourselves

  1810. is

  1811. and

  1812. I

  1813. hope

  1814. that

  1815. this

  1816. backwards

  1817. and worldly

  1818. way of

  1819. thinking

  1820. is as

  1821. obvious

  1822. to you

  1823. as it

  1824. is

  1825. to me

  1826. the

  1827. assumption

  1828. of the

  1829. Hebrew

  1830. thinkers

  1831. was that

  1832. we already

  1833. knew

  1834. how to

  1835. love

  1836. ourselves

  1837. to meet

  1838. our

  1839. needs

  1840. first

  1841. and then

  1842. to take

  1843. care

  1844. of

  1845. others

  1846. the

  1847. ideas

  1848. of liking

  1849. who you

  1850. are

  1851. or treating

  1852. yourself

  1853. or the

  1854. apparent

  1855. importance

  1856. of self

  1857. esteem

  1858. are relatively

  1859. new ideas

  1860. that only

  1861. seem to

  1862. be relevant

  1863. in extremely

  1864. affluent

  1865. and privileged

  1866. societies

  1867. like ours

  1868. poverty

  1869. and struggle

  1870. to make

  1871. ends meet

  1872. has been

  1873. the norm

  1874. not the

  1875. exception

  1876. throughout

  1877. history

  1878. when you're

  1879. worried about

  1880. getting food

  1881. on the

  1882. table

  1883. you don't

  1884. really have

  1885. the luxury

  1886. about whether

  1887. or not

  1888. you're fond

  1889. of your

  1890. personality

  1891. on the

  1892. contrary

  1893. the high

  1894. calling of

  1895. the Christian

  1896. life is

  1897. one of

  1898. self

  1899. sacrificial

  1900. love

  1901. and this

  1902. is demonstrated

  1903. to us

  1904. in the

  1905. person

  1906. of

  1907. Christ

  1908. we read

  1909. John 3

  1910. verse 16

  1911. and 8

  1912. through 18

  1913. by this

  1914. we know

  1915. love

  1916. that he

  1917. laid down

  1918. his life

  1919. for us

  1920. and we

  1921. ought to

  1922. lay down

  1923. our lives

  1924. for the

  1925. brothers

  1926. if anyone

  1927. has the

  1928. world's

  1929. goods

  1930. and sees

  1931. his brother

  1932. in need

  1933. yet closes

  1934. his heart

  1935. against him

  1936. how does

  1937. God's love

  1938. abide in

  1939. him

  1940. little

  1941. children

  1942. let us

  1943. not love

  1944. in word

  1945. or in

  1946. talk

  1947. but in

  1948. deed

  1949. and in

  1950. truth

  1951. in

  1952. John's

  1953. mind

  1954. closing

  1955. your

  1956. heart

  1957. against

  1958. a

  1959. brother

  1960. has

  1961. been

  1962. equated

  1963. with

  1964. seeing

  1965. a need

  1966. that you

  1967. can

  1968. fulfill

  1969. and not

  1970. taking

  1971. action

  1972. what is

  1973. on the

  1974. inside

  1975. is

  1976. reflected

  1977. on

  1978. the

  1979. outside

  1980. Paul

  1981. describes

  1982. this idea

  1983. more specifically

  1984. in Philippians 2

  1985. that we ought to

  1986. count one another

  1987. more significant

  1988. than ourselves

  1989. looking after

  1990. other people's

  1991. interests

  1992. having the

  1993. mind of

  1994. Christ

  1995. who gave

  1996. up his

  1997. right to

  1998. maintain

  1999. the full

  2000. expression

  2001. of his

  2002. deity

  2003. by

  2004. veiling

  2005. his

  2006. attributes

  2007. appearing

  2008. as a

  2009. creature

  2010. rather than

  2011. the

  2012. creator

  2013. and even

  2014. lowering

  2015. himself

  2016. to be

  2017. served

  2018. and killed

  2019. by his

  2020. very

  2021. creation

  2022. and this

  2023. is the

  2024. model

  2025. for our

  2026. own

  2027. love

  2028. to love

  2029. the neighbor

  2030. as the

  2031. self

  2032. is to

  2033. give up

  2034. our

  2035. interests

  2036. our

  2037. desires

  2038. for the

  2039. sake

  2040. of others

  2041. God

  2042. simply

  2043. loves us

  2044. it's in

  2045. his

  2046. nature

  2047. he's the

  2048. originator

  2049. of this

  2050. everlasting

  2051. and

  2052. unconditional

  2053. love

  2054. as Romans 5

  2055. says

  2056. God

  2057. demonstrates

  2058. his own

  2059. love for

  2060. us

  2061. that while

  2062. we were

  2063. still

  2064. sinners

  2065. Christ

  2066. died

  2067. for us

  2068. so let

  2069. us then

  2070. die to

  2071. the secular

  2072. concept that

  2073. we must

  2074. love ourselves

  2075. first before

  2076. we can love

  2077. others

  2078. God has

  2079. loved us

  2080. enough to

  2081. satisfy

  2082. and this

  2083. love as we

  2084. abide in it

  2085. is to overflow

  2086. abundantly

  2087. into the lives

  2088. of others

  2089. so how can we

  2090. actually do this

2091. a big part of it

  2092. is understanding

  2093. the connection

  2094. between these

  2095. two commands

  2096. so let's look at

  2097. our last point

  2098. together

  2099. the connection

  2100. between the

  2101. commands

  2102. so according

  2103. to one

  2104. commentator

  2105. Jesus was

  2106. the first

  2107. to place

  2108. these two

  2109. commands

  2110. from the

  2111. Torah

  2112. together

  2113. however

  2114. the New

  2115. Testament

  2116. offers

  2117. differed

  2118. greatly

  2119. with this

  2120. prior

  2121. tradition

  2122. continuing

  2123. Jesus'

  2124. teaching

  2125. on the

  2126. inseparable

  2127. nature

  2128. of the

  2129. two

  2130. commands

  2131. Paul writes

  2132. Romans 13

  2133. again

  2134. love does

  2135. no wrong

  2136. to a

  2137. neighbor

  2138. therefore

  2139. love

  2140. is the

  2141. fulfilling

  2142. of the

  2143. law

  2144. and in

  2145. Galatians 6

  2146. 2

  2147. Paul writes

  2148. again

  2149. bear one

  2150. another's

  2151. burdens

  2152. and so

  2153. fulfill

  2154. the law

  2155. of Christ

  2156. so how

  2157. is this

  2158. possible

  2159. that a

  2160. Pharisee

  2161. says that

  2162. one

  2163. command

  2164. to love

  2165. the neighbor

  2166. as itself

  2167. is the

  2168. fulfillment

  2169. of the

  2170. law

  2171. again

  2172. he would

  2173. have said

  2174. the Shema

  2175. multiple

  2176. times per

  2177. day

  2178. and literally

  2179. had it

  2180. written

  2181. on his

  2182. forehead

  2183. in the

  2184. phylactery

  2185. so here

  2186. lies the

  2187. connection

  2188. between

  2189. the two

  2190. commands

  2191. and understanding

  2192. them is

  2193. essential to

  2194. obedience

  2195. you cannot

  2196. love God

  2197. without loving

  2198. your neighbor

  2199. nor can you

  2200. love your

  2201. neighbor in

  2202. the way that

  2203. Christ

  2204. our standard

  2205. loved us

  2206. without

  2207. loving God

  2208. in creating

  2209. us in his

  2210. image

  2211. God has

  2212. tethered himself

  2213. to humanity

  2214. in an amazing

  2215. and glorious

  2216. way such

  2217. that an

  2218. offense against

  2219. a man

  2220. is an offense

  2221. against

  2222. God

  2223. as Matthew

  2224. records in

  2225. chapter 25

  2226. truly I

  2227. say to

  2228. you

  2229. as you

  2230. did it

  2231. to one

  2232. of the

  2233. least

  2234. of these

  2235. my

  2236. brothers

  2237. you did

  2238. it

  2239. to me

  2240. similarly

  2241. in

  2242. James

    James 3 chapter mention

  2243. chapter

  2244. 3

  2245. we

  2246. reflected

  2247. on this

  2248. passage

  2249. earlier

  2250. blessing

  2251. God

  2252. and cursing

  2253. those made

  2254. in his

  2255. likeness

  2256. was given

  2257. as an

    John 4 chapter mention

  2300. 4

  2301. starting in

  2302. verse

  2303. 19

  2304. 1st

  2305. John 4

    John 4:19

  2306. verse 19

  2307. says

  2308. we love

  2309. because he

  2310. first loved

  2311. us

  2312. if anyone

  2313. says

  2314. I love

  2315. God

  2316. and hates

  2317. his brother

  2318. he is a

  2319. liar

  2320. for he

  2321. who does

  2322. not love

  2323. his brother

  2324. whom he

  2325. has seen

  2326. cannot love

  2327. God

  2328. whom he

  2329. has not

  2330. seen

  2331. in this

  2332. commandment

  2333. we have

  2334. from him

  2335. whoever

  2336. loves

  2337. God

  2338. must also

  2339. love

  2340. his brother

  2341. everyone

  2342. who

  2343. believes

  2344. that

  2345. Jesus

  2346. is the

  2347. Christ

  2348. has been

  2349. born

  2350. of

  2351. God

  2352. and

  2353. everyone

  2354. who

  2355. loves

  2356. the

  2357. father

  2358. loves

  2359. whoever

  2360. has

  2361. been

  2362. born

  2363. of

  2364. him

  2365. by

  2366. this

  2367. we

  2368. know

  2369. the

  2370. love

  2371. that

  2372. we

  2373. love

  2374. the

  2375. children

  2376. of

  2377. God

  2378. when

  2379. we

  2380. love

  2381. God

  2382. and

  2383. obey

  2384. his

  2385. commandments

  2386. for

  2387. this

  2388. is

  2389. the

  2390. love

  2391. of

  2392. God

  2393. that

  2394. we

  2395. keep

  2396. his

  2397. commandments

  2398. and

  2399. his

  2400. commandments

  2401. are

  2402. not

  2403. burdensome

  2404. !

  2405. which

  2406. is

  2407. to

  2408. love

  2409. what

  2410. he

  2411. loves

  2412. namely

  2413. his

  2414. children

  2415. each

  2416. of

  2417. these

  2418. three

  2419. are

  2420. wound

  2421. together

  2422. so

  2423. tightly

  2424. that

  2425. if

  2426. one

  2427. is

  2428. missing

  2429. according

  2430. to

  2431. John

  2432. all

  2433. three

  2434. cannot

  2435. exist

  2436. we

  2437. cannot

  2438. love

  2439. others

  2440. as

  2441. Christ

  2442. loved

  2443. us

  2444. until

  2445. we

  2446. have

  2447. experienced

  2448. the great

  2449. love

  2450. of

  2451. Christ

  2452. and

  2453. contemplated

  2454. the

  2455. necessary

  2456. sacrifice

  2457. to lay

  2458. down

  2459. one's

  2460. life

  2461. for

  2462. an

  2463. enemy

  2464. we

  2465. can't

  2466. love

  2467. God

  2468. unless

  2469. we

  2470. know

  2471. him

  2472. and

  2473. begin

  2474. to

  2475. unite

  2476. our

  2477. own

  2478. desires

  2479. with

  2480. his

  2481. desires

  2482. loving

  2483. what

  2484. he

  2485. loves

  2486. so

  2487. what

  2488. does

  2489. this

  2490. mean

  2491. for

  2492. us

  2493. if

  2494. we

  2495. find

  2496. ourselves

  2497. lacking

  2498. in

  2499. any

  2500. of

  2501. these

  2502. three

  2503. areas

  2504. zeal

  2505. or

  2506. love

  2507. for

  2508. God

  2509. a

  2510. love

  2511. for

  2512. others

  2513. or

  2514. an

  2515. obedience

  2516. to

  2517. God's

  2518. commands

  2519. we

  2520. can

  2521. examine

  2522. our

  2523. attitude

  2524. towards

  2525. all

  2526. three

  2527. it's

  2528. a

  2529. package

  2530. deal

  2531. so

  2532. do

  2533. you

  2534. ever

  2535. wonder

  2536. whether

  2537. you

  2538. love

  2539. God

  2540. as

  2541. you

  2542. ought

  2543. or

  2544. whether

  2545. or

  2546. what

  2547. else

  2548. you

  2549. can

  2550. then

  2551. fall

  2552. in love

  2553. once

  2554. again

  2555. with

  2556. the

  2557. one

  2558. who

  2559. has

  2560. loved

  2561. your

  2562. soul

  2563. begin

  2564. to

  2565. love

  2566. those

  2567. around

  2568. you

  2569. in

  2570. a

  2571. sacrificial

  2572. way

  2573. and

  2574. feel

  2575. the

  2576. great

  2577. need

  2578. you

  2579. have

  2580. to

  2581. be

  2582. poured

  2583. into

  2584. before

  2585. you

  2586. can

  2587. pour

  2588. out

  2589. so

  2590. while

  2591. the

  2592. gospel

  2593. message

  2594. in

  2595. these

  2596. verses

  2597. is

  2598. not

  2599. particularly

  2600. glaring

  2601. a

  2602. brief

  2603. peek

  2604. beneath

  2605. the

  2606. surface

  2607. displays

  2608. two

  2609. commands

  2610. that are

  2611. wrought

  2612. with

  2613. deep

  2614. gospel

  2615. implications

  2616. and

  2617. hope

  2618. for

  2619. what

  2620. hope

  2621. we

  2622. have

  2623. of

  2624. fulfilling

  2625. these

  2626. two

  2627. commands

  2628. reorienting

  2629. our

  2630. entire

  2631. essence

  2632. life

  2633. intellect

  2634. desire

  2635. and

  2636. fervency

  2637. off of

  2638. ourselves

  2639. and

  2640. onto

  2641. God

  2642. apart

  2643. from

  2644. the

  2645. work

  2646. of

  2647. the

  2648. spirit

  2649. and

  2650. how

  2651. can

  2652. we

  2653. have

  2654. access

  2655. to

  2656. God's

  2657. very

  2658. spirit

  2659. without

  2660. being

  2661. utterly

  2662. destroyed

  2663. like

  2664. those

  2665. of

  2666. the

  2667. Old

  2668. Testament

  2669. temple

  2670. without

  2671. the

  2672. perfect

  2673. substitutionary

  2674. sacrifice

  2675. of

  2676. Christ

  2677. who

  2678. has

  2679. fulfilled

  2680. these

  2681. two

  2682. commands

  2683. perfectly

  2684. at

  2685. every

  2686. point

  2687. he

  2688. did

  2689. nothing

  2690. apart

  2691. from

  2692. the

  2693. will

  2694. of

  2695. the

  2696. father

  2697. he

  2698. was

  2700. in

  2701. his

  2702. intellect

  2703. his

  2704. will

  2705. and

  2706. his

  2707. affection

  2708. towards

  2709. the

  2711. glory

  2712. and

  2713. therefore

  2714. towards

  2715. the love

  2716. of

  2717. humanity

  2718. and

  2719. his

  2720. and

  2721. his

  2722. and

  2740. that

  2743. he

  2744. yielded

  2748. to be
