  1. As you're settling into your seats, if you join me, please, in Joshua chapter 3.

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  2. As you're getting there, recall that we have been and we will be taking some strides to the Old Testament up until Advent season this year.

  3. We've been doing this now for quite a few months, really working at helping you see the larger narrative,

  4. what's happening throughout the entirety of the scripture with this particular focus on the Old Testament, right?

  5. We see in Genesis chapter 1, God creates the world and then he rests.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  6. Things are good and they are completed, right?

  7. And intends to reign in this place with his people.

  8. We see very quickly, beginning of Genesis chapter 3, a disruption of that rest.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  9. And so the rest of the story is bringing us back to that place.

  10. How is it that God then reestablishes, restores all things and brings his people back into relationship with him forever, right?

  11. It's a big, grand narrative.

  12. And it's really easy to get lost in the details.

  13. And so we've been hoping as we just kind of jump through the Old Testament narrative to bring you back to that redemptive story.

  14. What is it that God is accomplishing?

  15. And we're looking at some of these very major events in this storyline.

  16. Now, we have attempted to do it in 14 weeks.

  17. I used up one of them last week with something else, so we're trying to do it in 13 weeks.

  18. So we've skipped some significant things, like we talked about the creation story, Genesis chapter 1 and 2,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  19. the fall of man in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  20. but then we skipped all the way to Genesis chapter 12 to talk about the calling of Abraham and the Abrahamic covenant.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  21. So we skipped over the flood as an example.

  22. We went on to talk about the call of Moses to deliver Israel from bondage to Egypt in Exodus chapter 3,

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  23. the Mosaic covenant of Exodus chapter 19,

    Exodus 19 chapter mention

  24. so the giving of the law as an extension of the Abrahamic covenant.

  25. And we talked about the rebellion of the Israelites in Numbers chapter 14.

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  26. So to give us some immediate context for this morning,

  27. I want to read to you from Numbers chapter 14,

    Numbers 14 chapter mention

  28. where the people have sent into the land spies.

  29. There's 12 of them.

  30. They have come back and given the report that the people of the land are too great.

  31. They cannot be conquered.

  32. Ten of them say this, two do not,

  33. and God punishes this generation who believes those who say that God won't fulfill his promise

  34. because of the might of the people of the land.

  35. So beginning in Numbers chapter 14, verse 26 and following,

    Numbers 14:26

  36. and the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron saying,

  37. How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me?

  38. I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me.

  39. Say to them, as I live, declares the Lord,

  40. what you have said in my hearing I will do to you.

  41. Your dead body shall fall in this wilderness,

  42. and of all your number listed in the census from 20 years old and upward,

  43. who have grumbled against me,

  44. not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell,

  45. except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

  46. But your little ones, who you said would become a prey,

  47. I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected.

  48. But as for you, your dead body shall fall in this wilderness,

  49. and your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness 40 years

  50. and shall suffer for your faithlessness

  51. until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.

  52. So there's this punishment placed on Israel, right?

  53. That they'll stay in the land for 40 years.

  54. And at the end of that, when that generation passed,

  55. the little ones, the ones that will grow up then in this wilderness,

  56. will be the ones that will go in to the promised land.

  57. It's during this time that most scholars believe

  58. that Moses wrote the first five books of the Old Testament,

  59. often called the Pentateuch, right?

  60. He's telling, retelling, and telling to this generation

  61. that they would know what they need to know to enter into this land, right?

  62. It's believed that Joshua completes the book of Deuteronomy,

  63. records Moses' death,

  64. and then writes this book about these people going into this land.

  65. So there's two spared from this judgment.

  66. They're the two spies that said,

  67. no, let's go and take the land because God has promised.

  68. And they're Caleb and Joshua.

  69. So this 40 years has passed,

  70. and we see at the beginning of the book of Joshua,

  71. the first three verses records,

  72. after the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  73. the Lord said to Joshua, the son of Nun, Moses' assistant,

  74. Moses, my servant, is dead.

  75. Now, therefore, arise, go over this Jordan,

  76. and you and all this people into the land that I am giving to them,

  77. to the people of Israel.

  78. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon,

  79. I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  80. And we see in chapter 2 that spies go in once again.

  81. There's a wonderful story there I would encourage you to read.

  82. And they come back and say,

  83. the people are afraid of us.

  84. And this bolsters the confidence of the Israelites to go into the land.

  85. So let's read our text.

  86. This will be all of Joshua chapter 3.

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  87. Before we read, let me remind you, beloved,

  88. that this is God's word to us.

  89. It was written for his glory and our good.

  90. And we would all do well to listen to it

  91. in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands.

  92. Beginning in verse 1, chapter 3.

  93. Then Joshua rose early in the morning,

  94. and they set out from Shittim.

  95. And they came to the Jordan,

  96. he and all the people of Israel,

  97. and lodged there before they passed over.

  98. At the end of three days,

  99. the officers went through the camp

  100. and commanded the people,

  101. As soon as you see the ark of the covenant

  102. of the Lord your God being carried by the Levitical priests,

  103. then you shall set out from your place and follow it.

  104. Yet there shall be a distance between you and it,

  105. about 2,000 cubits in length.

  106. This is about a half a mile.

  107. Do not come near it,

  108. in order that you may know the way you shall go,

  109. for you have not passed this way before.

  110. And Joshua said to the people,

  111. Consecrate yourselves,

  112. for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

  113. And Joshua said to the priests,

  114. Take up the ark of the covenant

  115. and pass on before the people.

  116. So they took up the ark of the covenant

  117. and went before the people.

  118. The Lord said to Joshua,

  119. Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel,

  120. that they may know that as I was with Moses,

  121. so I will be with you.

  122. And as for you,

  123. command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant,

  124. When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan,

  125. you shall stand still in the Jordan.

  126. And Joshua said to the people of Israel,

  127. Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.

  128. And Joshua said,

  129. Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you,

  130. and that he will without fail drive out before you

  131. the Canaanites,

  132. the Hittites,

  133. the Hivites,

  134. the Perizzites,

  135. the Girgashites,

  136. the Amorites,

  137. and the Jebusites.

  138. Behold,

  139. the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth

  140. is passing over before you into the Jordan.

  141. Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel,

  142. from each tribe a man.

  143. And when the soles of the feet of the priests

  144. bearing the ark of the Lord,

  145. the Lord of all the earth,

  146. shall rest in the waters of the Jordan,

  147. the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing,

  148. and the waters coming down from above

  149. shall stand in one heap.

  150. So when the people set out from their tents

  151. to pass over the Jordan

  152. with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant

  153. before the people,

  154. and as soon as those bearing the ark

  155. had come as far as the Jordan,

  156. and the feet of the priests bearing the ark

  157. were dipped in the brink of the water,

  158. now the Jordan overflows all its banks

  159. throughout the time of harvest.

  160. The waters coming down from above

  161. stood and rose up in a heap

  162. very far away at Adam,

  163. or Adam probably,

  164. in our English.

  165. The city that is beside Zerathon

  166. and those flowing down from the sea of the Arabah,

  167. the salt sea,

  168. were completely cut off,

  169. and the people passed over opposite Jericho.

  170. Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant

  171. of the Lord stirred firmly on dry ground

  172. in the midst of the Jordan,

  173. and all Israel was passing over on dry ground

  174. until all the nation finished

  175. passing over the Jordan.

  176. Right?

  177. So there's a lot going on in this chapter,

  178. right?

  179. A significant episode in the life of Israel,

  180. right?

  181. Speaking to the faithfulness of Israel

  182. in this moment,

  183. to the promises of God.

  184. So we have an opportunity this morning

  185. to observe the faith of the Israelites

  186. and to have our faith increased.

  187. So we'll look at the text

  188. in the following three points.

  189. I promise I won't satisfy

  190. every answer you may have about this text

  191. because we just don't have time this morning.

  192. But we'll structure it this way.

  193. Number one,

  194. the order of faith.

  195. Number two,

  196. the obedience of faith.

  197. And number three,

  198. the object of faith.

  199. Order,

  200. obedience,

  201. object.

  202. And I am always so proud of myself

  203. when I alliterate.

  204. Three points.

  205. So for a moment,

  206. let me gloat.

  207. I did it.

  208. Three points.

  209. Order,

  210. obedience,

  211. object.

  212. Number one,

  213. the order of faith.

  214. We will not spend much time

  215. on this first point,

  216. but I believe that it is important

  217. to see that God makes promises

  218. and his people believe those promises

  219. in that order.

  220. If you go and do a search for sermons

  221. on Joshua chapter three,

  222. you're going to see lots of sermons

  223. with the prominent point being obedience.

  224. And it's there.

  225. It is in the text, right?

  226. We must note that yes,

  227. in fact,

  228. the Israelites obeyed.

  229. That is important for us today.

  230. We must also obey.

  231. But I don't think we see that

  232. as the main point.

  233. We don't want to miss what's happening

  234. as God is redeeming a people.

  235. We will lose sight of the entire narrative

  236. if we don't recognize

  237. that the Israelites

  238. were not deserving people.

  239. We are not deserving people.

  240. God chose them

  241. despite their faithfulness, right?

  242. This people that came from Abraham,

  243. We find out that Abraham

  244. was an idolater.

  245. Abraham had done nothing

  246. to deserve God's favor,

  247. and yet God made a covenant with him.

  248. He promised to bless him

  249. with a land, right?

  250. With seed,

  251. a great people, right?

  252. That would be a blessing

  253. to all nations.

  254. And he did this

  255. before Abraham had done anything.

  256. He had only been an idolater

  257. up until that point.

  258. So he chose a people

  259. for his glory.

  260. He's chosen us

  261. despite our faithlessness.

  262. If we are in Christ this morning,

  263. not a single one of us

  264. did anything to merit

  265. God's favor for us.

  266. If you don't believe this,

  267. you need to be humbled

  268. by your sin, right?

  269. We do not deserve

  270. God's grace

  271. and his mercy.

  272. He does this very act,

  273. the saving of a people, right?

  274. So that he can put on display

  275. his mercy and his grace.

  276. That he would have a people

  277. who say, right,

  278. if it were not but for

  279. the mercy and grace of God,

  280. I would be utterly destitute.

  281. I would be cut off from him.

  282. I would not choose

  283. to follow God in Christ,

  284. but because he saved me,

  285. I follow him willfully.

  286. So you want to note

  287. in our text, right?

  288. Joshua is saying to them,

  289. he's reminding them

  290. of what God has promised

  291. he would do.

  292. He's saying to them,

  293. you are God's people.

  294. Remember these promises

  295. that we've been waiting

  296. for 40 years.

  297. Your parents have been telling you,

  298. you will not go into the land

  299. or we will not go into the land,

  300. but you will, right?

  301. This is what he's reminding them of.

  302. Verse five, he says,

  303. consecrate yourselves

  304. for tomorrow,

  305. the Lord will do wonders among you.

  306. The Lord will work.

  307. He will act to bring you

  308. into the land.

  309. And then verse 10 and verse 11,

  310. here is how you shall know

  311. that the living God is among you

  312. and that he will,

  313. without fail,

  314. drive out from before you

  315. the Canaanites,

  316. the Hittites,

  317. the Hivites,

  318. the Perizzites,

  319. the Girgashites,

  320. the Amorites,

  321. and the Jebusites,

  322. right?

  323. Will they be agents

  324. in that driving out?

  325. Yes.

  326. God will use them

  327. to drive out these people,

  328. to bring judgment upon

  329. these peoples.

  330. But it's very clear here,

  331. Joshua says,

  332. that it will be the Lord's doing.

  333. And then the guarantee of this,

  334. he says in verse 11,

  335. is the ark of the covenant

  336. of the Lord of all the earth

  337. is passing over before you

  338. into the Jordan, right?

  339. God is about to put on display

  340. his power so that you will believe

  341. that he will act

  342. as you are faithful to him.

  343. So we have to get this order correct,

  344. right?

  345. We must be very,

  346. very careful about this.

  347. Many of us who are in Christ

  348. can err in this way, right?

  349. Thinking now that we're in Christ,

  350. somehow we continue

  351. to earn his favor

  352. by our works.

  353. May it never be, right?

  354. We work because we're saved,

  355. not the other way around.

  356. Some of you may think

  357. that if I just do enough,

  358. there's enough of a Christendom

  359. injected into you

  360. in your upbringing.

  361. If I just look just so,

  362. so, right?

  363. If I have the faith

  364. of my parents,

  365. then I will be accepted by God.

  366. We must be accepted

  367. by God in Christ.

  368. It's an important order

  369. to get correct.

  370. So I want to show you that order.

  371. They're riding the coattails,

  372. right,

  373. of this order of faith

  374. that began with Abraham.

  375. So I want you to turn back quickly

  376. to Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  377. You can mark us here.

  378. We will be back

  379. in Joshua chapter 3.

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  380. We're most certainly

  381. not done with it,

  382. but kind of in a rushed way,

  383. I'm going to read

  384. quite a bit of Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  385. Connecting you

  386. to the bigger narrative, right?

  387. So after these things,

  388. verse 1 of chapter 15,

  389. after these things, right?

  390. Much time has passed

  391. since the original covenant

  392. was given to Abraham.

  393. Roughly 25 years.

  394. He's fought a war

  395. to rescue Lot, right?

  396. Lots of stuff has gone on.

  397. After these things,

  398. the word of the Lord

  399. came to Abram in a vision.

  400. Fear not, Abram.

  401. I am your shield.

  402. Your reward

  403. shall be very great.

  404. But Abram said,

  405. O Lord God,

  406. what will you give me?

  407. For I continue childless,

  408. and the heir of my house

  409. is Eleazar of Damascus.

  410. It would seem

  411. that Abram has appointed an heir.

  412. If I should die,

  413. this Eleazar of Damascus

  414. will be my heir.

  415. Verse 3,

  416. And Abram said,

  417. Behold,

  418. you have given me

  419. no offspring,

  420. and a member of my household

  421. will be my heir.

  422. And behold,

  423. the word of the Lord

  424. came to him,

  425. this man shall not be your heir,

  426. for your very own son

  427. shall be your heir.

  428. And he brought him outside

  429. and said,

  430. Now, I think there is

  431. an element of faltering faith.

  432. We're going to read

  433. in a little bit

  434. that Paul magnifies

  435. the faith of Abraham.

  436. And I think he's right to do so,

  437. but I think we're seeing

  438. this transition happen

  439. here in the text right now.

  440. He seems to have

  441. some faltering faith.

  442. He says to God,

  443. what will you give me?

  444. I don't have a son.

  445. I've made this guy Eleazar a son.

  446. He's trying to accomplish

  447. kingdom through his servant

  448. rather than through a son

  449. because he's 100 years old

  450. at this point.

  451. 99 years old.

  452. He has no son.

  453. So God,

  454. in his loving kindness,

  455. brings him outside,

  456. verse 5,

  457. and says,

  458. Look toward heaven

  459. and number the stars

  460. if you are able

  461. to number them.

  462. It's a rhetorical question.

  463. He can't.

  464. Then he said to him,

  465. So shall your offspring

  466. be, right?

  467. And here in verse 6,

  468. we see this really key phrase.

  469. And it's repeated again and again

  470. throughout the Bible,

  471. particularly the New Testament.

  472. And he, being Abram,

  473. believed the Lord

  474. and he counted it to him

  475. as righteousness.

  476. So he believed the Lord

  477. and he counted it to him

  478. as righteousness.

  479. His belief itself

  480. was not righteousness,

  481. right?

  482. This was a righteousness

  483. from outside of himself.

  484. The Lord counted it to him,

  485. credited it to him,

  486. right?

  487. So he believed God

  488. and God declared him

  489. righteous.

  490. And he said to him,

  491. I am the Lord

  492. who brought you out

  493. from Ur of the Chaldeans

  494. to give you this land

  495. to possess.

  496. But he said,

  497. O Lord God,

  498. how am I to know

  499. that I shall possess it?

  500. He said to him,

  501. Bring me a heifer

  502. three years old,

  503. a female goat

  504. three years old,

  505. a ram three years old,

  506. a turtle dove,

  507. and a young pigeon.

  508. And he brought him

  509. all these,

  510. cut them in half

  511. and laid each half

  512. over against the other.

  513. But he did not cut

  514. the birds in half.

  515. And when the birds of prey

  516. came down on the carcasses,

  517. Abram drove them away.

  518. As the sun was going down,

  519. a deep sleep

  520. fell on Abram

  521. and behold,

  522. dreadful and great

  523. darkness fell upon him.

  524. Okay, now there's a lot

  525. of strange things

  526. happening here.

  527. We won't have time

  528. to talk about each

  529. and every one of them.

  530. But this was an old

  531. covenant keeping method,

  532. right?

  533. If you and I were to make

  534. a promise with one another,

  535. we might take an animal

  536. and we would tear it in two.

  537. And we would put it

  538. on the ground

  539. and we would pass together

  540. between that.

  541. And it was a way of saying,

  542. if I don't keep

  543. my end of this bargain,

  544. like let what happened

  545. to this animal

  546. happen to me.

  547. It's a very serious,

  548. somber way

  549. of making the covenant,

  550. right?

  551. Even as this is being

  552. recorded here in Genesis,

  553. Moses assumes

  554. everybody knows,

  555. right?

  556. He doesn't give a lot

  557. of textual explanation

  558. as to why this thing

  559. happened because

  560. in his thinking,

  561. everyone knows,

  562. understands what's

  563. happening here

  564. as the Lord

  565. does this.

  566. But something very

  567. significant happens

  568. in verse 12.

  569. As the sun was going down,

  570. a deep sleep

  571. fell on Abram.

  572. And the previous place

  573. that we see this

  574. deep sleep,

  575. same Hebrew phrase

  576. used,

  577. is when Adam

  578. was put to sleep

  579. and a rib was taken

  580. from his side

  581. and the woman

  582. was made.

  583. The point being,

  584. Adam was entirely

  585. passive in that process,

  586. right?

  587. He is asleep

  588. and so was Abram.

  589. Abram has nothing

  590. to do

  591. with this covenant

  592. that's being made.

  593. This is entirely

  594. a promise being made

  595. and therefore

  596. kept by God.

  597. Verse 13,

  598. Then the Lord said

  599. to Abram,

  600. Know for certain

  601. that your offspring

  602. will be sojourners

  603. in a land

  604. that is not theirs

  605. and will be servants

  606. there and they will

  607. be afflicted

  608. for 400 years.

  609. He's talking about Egypt.

  610. But I will bring judgment

  611. on the nation

  612. that they serve

  613. and afterward

  614. they shall come out

  615. with great possessions.

  616. As for you,

  617. you shall go to

  618. your fathers in peace.

  619. You shall be buried

  620. in a good old age

  621. and they shall come back

  622. here in the fourth generation

  623. for the iniquity

  624. of the Amorites

  625. is not yet complete.

  626. When the sun had gone down

  627. and it was dark,

  628. behold,

  629. a smoking fire pot

  630. and a flaming torch

  631. passed between

  632. these pieces.

  633. These two things,

  634. smoke and fire,

  635. represent God on earth,

  636. his presence itself.

  637. So think about

  638. the burning bush,

  639. think about Mount Sinai

  640. on flame

  641. and with smoke.

  642. So these two things

  643. represent God's very presence

  644. making this covenant promise

  645. as it passes

  646. between these pieces.

  647. Verse 18,

  648. On that day,

  649. the Lord made a covenant

  650. with Abram saying,

  651. to your offspring

  652. I give this land

  653. from the river of Egypt

  654. to the great river,

  655. the river Euphrates,

  656. the land of the Kenites,

  657. the Kenizzites,

  658. the Kadmonites,

  659. the Hittites,

  660. the Perizzites,

  661. the Rephaim,

  662. the Amorites,

  663. the Canaanites,

  664. the Giggishites,

  665. and the Jebusites.

  666. You notice some of those names

  667. that are familiar

  668. to Joshua chapter 3.

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  669. So Abraham believed

  670. and it was counted to him

  671. as righteousness.

  672. He did not act.

  673. He merely believed.

  674. Paul picks this up

  675. in Romans chapter 4.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  676. He writes,

  677. In hope,

  678. Abraham believed against hope

  679. that he should become

  680. the father of many nations.

  681. As he had been told,

  682. so shall your offspring be.

  683. He did not weaken in faith

  684. when he considered

  685. his own body

  686. which was as good as dead

  687. since he was about

  688. a hundred years old

  689. or when he considered

  690. the barrenness

  691. of Sarah's womb.

  692. No unbelief made him

  693. waver concerning

  694. the promise of God

  695. but he grew strong

  696. in his faith

  697. as he gave glory to God.

  698. Fully convinced

  699. that God was able

  700. to do what he had promised.

  701. That is why his faith

  702. was counted to him

  703. as righteousness.

  704. Right?

  705. He's quoting there

  706. from Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  707. But the words

  708. it was counted to him

  709. were not written

  710. for his sake alone

  711. but for ours also.

  712. It will be counted

  713. to us who believe in him

  714. who raised from the dead

  715. Jesus our Lord

  716. who was delivered up

  717. for our trespasses

  718. and raised

  719. for our justification.

  720. We're going to talk

  721. a bit more

  722. about the typology

  723. of Joshua chapter 3

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  724. if you'd like to turn

  725. back there.

  726. But you see

  727. God's people

  728. having been promised

  729. an inheritance

  730. that they've not yet

  731. entered.

  732. They've not yet

  733. entered into it

  734. and yet they're going to.

  735. Right?

  736. We're about to see that happen.

  737. We've read it already.

  738. We're going to talk a bit

  739. about it here

  740. in just a moment.

  741. Right?

  742. They're obedient

  743. from faith

  744. that God

  745. will

  746. accomplish.

  747. And we approach

  748. God in the very

  749. same way.

  750. Right?

  751. The promise made

  752. to us.

  753. The inheritance

  754. that is ours.

  755. The eternal rest

  756. that is promised us

  757. that is found

  758. in Christ.

  759. Right?

  760. This is not because

  761. we work

  762. to do it.

  763. Right?

  764. It's because

  765. God makes a promise

  766. we believe

  767. and that is counted

  768. to us

  769. credited to us

  770. as righteousness.

  771. Right?

  772. So the order

  773. of faith

  774. matters.

  775. It matters

  776. quite a deal.

  777. Now

  778. secondly

  779. the obedience

  780. of faith.

  781. We're actually

  782. not going to spend

  783. a whole lot of time

  784. here.

  785. We see that the people

  786. obey.

  787. Right?

  788. They believe

  789. in God

  790. and they believe

  791. what God said

  792. will come

  793. to pass.

  794. We are astute

  795. learners of our

  796. Bible.

  797. If you have read

  798. the book of Joshua

  799. before,

  800. we're going to see

  801. all sorts

  802. of failure

  803. to faithfulness.

  804. Right?

  805. Just chapters

  806. later,

  807. we already see

  808. them not obeying

  809. God's commands.

  810. But in Joshua

    Joshua 3 chapter mention

  811. chapter 3,

  812. right,

  813. praise God,

  814. we see an example

  815. of their obedience

  816. to what God

  817. has asked

  818. for them

  819. to do.

  820. Right?

  821. We do not

  822. become God's

  823. people by our

  824. works,

  825. but our

  826. works show

  827. us to be

  828. God's people.

  829. Verse 6,

  830. Joshua said

  831. to the priest,

  832. take up the

  833. Ark of the

  834. Covenant and

  835. pass on before

  836. the people.

  837. And simply

  838. recorded,

  839. so they took

  840. up the Ark of

  841. the Covenant

  842. and went

  843. before the

  844. people.

  845. Right?

  846. I love these

  847. instances in the

  848. scripture where

  849. we merely get

  850. the command and

  851. the obedience to

  852. the command.

  853. No dialogue in

  854. between,

  855. no resistance at

  856. all.

  857. They just

  858. did what

  859. they were

  860. told to

  861. do.

  862. Last part

  863. of verse 16,

  864. and the people

  865. passed over

  866. opposite Jericho.

  867. Right?

  868. They did the

  869. very thing

  870. that they were

  871. commanded to

  872. do.

  873. They followed

  874. the Ark

  875. at a distance.

  876. It went

  877. into the

  878. water.

  879. The water

  880. was parted

  881. and they

  882. passed over.

  883. Verse 17,

  884. now the

  885. priest bearing

  886. the Ark of

  887. the Covenant

  888. Lord stirred

  889. firmly on

  890. dry ground

  891. in the midst

  892. of the Jordan

  893. just as they

  894. were commanded

  895. to do.

  896. Right?

  897. They stayed

  898. there and

  899. all Israel

  900. was passing

  901. over on

  902. dry ground

  903. until all

  904. the nation

  905. finished passing

  906. over the

  907. Jordan.

  908. Right?

  909. So they did

  910. the thing

  911. that they

  912. were commanded

  913. to do.

  914. They did

  915. the thing

  916. that their

  917. parents'

  918. generation

  919. had failed

  920. to do.

  921. Right?

  922. They rightly,

  923. properly feared

  924. God over

  925. the inhabitants

  926. of the land.

  927. Right?

  928. Their parents

  929. had done

  930. quite the

  931. opposite.

  932. The parents

  933. had feared

  934. the people

  935. of the land

  936. instead of

  937. fearing

  938. God.

  939. On your

  940. bulletin

  941. this morning

  942. I always

  943. try to put

  944. these historical

  945. quotations.

  946. This is

  947. William

  948. Gurnall

  949. a Puritan

  950. preacher.

  951. He said

  952. we fear

  953. men so

  954. much

  955. because we

  956. fear God

  957. so little.

  958. One fear

  959. cures another.

  960. When man's

  961. terror scares

  962. you turn

  963. your thoughts

  964. to the wrath

  965. of God.

  966. Right?

  967. If the

  968. previous generation

  969. had done

  970. this they

  971. would have

  972. gone on

  973. over.

  974. Right?

  975. The story

  976. would have

  977. been told

  978. differently.

  979. Right?

  980. They feared

  981. the armies

  982. of the

  983. land but

  984. if they

  985. had instead

  986. feared what

  987. would happen

  988. had they not

  989. obeyed they

  990. would have

  991. gone over

  992. and instead

  993. they stayed

  994. as a judgment

  995. in the wilderness

  996. for those

  997. 40 years.

  998. Each of them

  999. perished in

  1000. that place.

  1001. Here's a

  1002. generation

  1003. that fears

  1004. God more

  1005. than man

  1006. and so they

  1007. go over.

  1008. Right?

  1009. So if we

  1010. have faith

  1011. it's going

  1012. to be

  1013. evidence.

  1014. Right?

  1015. James speaks

  1016. about this.

  1017. This is his

  1018. very point

  1019. in his

  1020. letter.

  1021. Right?

  1022. If we

  1023. have faith

  1024. it will

  1025. have

  1026. evidence.

  1027. It will

  1028. bear

  1029. fruit.

  1030. So we

  1031. must be

  1032. obedient but

  1033. we must

  1034. get the

  1035. order of

  1036. that

  1037. faith

  1038. correct.

  1039. Finally

  1040. and we're

  1041. going to

  1042. spend a

  1043. little more

  1044. time here

  1045. so I'm

  1046. going to

  1047. speed up

  1048. a little

  1049. bit.

  1050. The

  1051. object

  1052. of

  1053. faith.

  1054. We

  1055. cannot

  1056. just

  1057. have

  1058. faith.

  1059. There's

  1060. a

  1061. declare

  1062. I

  1063. have

  1064. faith.

  1065. Right?

  1066. The

  1067. object

  1068. of our

  1069. faith

  1070. matters

  1071. immensely.

  1072. What is

  1073. it that

  1074. you believe?

  1075. If you

  1076. say you

  1077. have

  1078. faith,

  1079. what is

  1080. it that

  1081. you

  1082. believe

  1083. or have

  1084. belief

  1085. in?

  1086. And this

  1087. text helps

  1088. us to see

  1089. who we

  1090. must place

  1091. our faith

  1092. in.

  1093. And it

  1094. does so

  1095. typologically.

  1096. Okay?

  1097. So I'm

  1098. going to talk

  1099. a little bit

  1100. about typology

  1101. in just a

  1102. moment.

  1103. But it's

  1104. important to

  1105. know that

  1106. the Old

  1107. Testament is

  1108. written in

  1109. an Eastern

  1110. way of

  1111. thinking.

  1112. most of

  1113. us

  1114. naturally

  1115. have a

  1116. very

  1117. Western

  1118. way of

  1119. thinking.

  1120. Our

  1121. logic

  1122. is

  1123. extremely

  1124. linear.

  1125. It moves

  1126. along like

  1127. this.

  1128. This is

  1129. not the

  1130. typical way

  1131. that Eastern

  1132. thinkers

  1133. think.

  1134. So they

  1135. will do

  1136. things like

  1137. not this,

  1138. not this,

  1139. not this,

  1140. but this.

  1141. Leave you

  1142. wondering,

  1143. wait, if it's

  1144. not that,

  1145. if it's not

  1146. that,

  1147. if it's not

  1148. that,

  1149. then what

  1150. could it

  1151. be?

  1152. And they

  1153. help draw

  1154. the conclusion

  1155. in that

  1156. way.

  1157. The

  1158. scripture

  1159. does that.

  1160. A way

  1161. that it

  1162. does that,

  1163. a simple

  1164. example,

  1165. is the

  1166. law making

  1167. us right

  1168. with God.

  1169. No,

  1170. not that.

  1171. It helps

  1172. point to

  1173. our

  1174. insufficiency

  1175. to keep

  1176. the law,

  1177. so it

  1178. leaves us

  1179. saying,

  1180. so then

  1181. what?

  1182. I can't

  1183. keep the

  1184. law,

  1185. and there's

  1186. a curse

  1187. that accompanies

  1188. with the

  1189. breaking of

  1190. the law,

  1191. that is

  1192. death,

  1193. then what?

  1194. What

  1195. must we

  1196. do?

  1197. And the

  1198. Bible

  1199. answers

  1200. that

  1201. question.

  1202. So,

  1203. not this,

  1204. not this,

  1205. not this,

  1206. but this.

  1207. another way,

  1208. also,

  1209. like this,

  1210. but not

  1211. quite this.

  1212. And we

  1213. see that in

  1214. some of our

  1215. literature,

  1216. our western

  1217. literature will

  1218. foreshadow

  1219. things.

  1220. scripture does

  1221. this quite

  1222. often,

  1223. right?

  1224. This is

  1225. called

  1226. typology.

  1227. An example

  1228. of that

  1229. is the

  1230. sacrifice

  1231. on the

  1232. day of

  1233. atonement,

  1234. right?

  1235. A particular

  1236. day,

  1237. high priest

  1238. went in,

  1239. one day

  1240. a year,

  1241. made this

  1242. sacrifice,

  1243. right?

  1244. It wasn't

  1245. sufficient to

  1246. forgive the

  1247. sins of

  1248. Israel.

  1249. It was

  1250. meant to

  1251. show us

  1252. like this,

  1253. but not

  1254. quite like

  1255. this,

  1256. right?

  1257. Another

  1258. example would

  1259. be the

  1260. Passover,

  1261. the lamb,

  1262. the spotless

  1263. lamb that

  1264. had to be

  1265. killed.

  1266. The

  1267. Israelites

  1268. painted the

  1269. blood on

  1270. the doorpost

  1271. so that

  1272. the angel

  1273. of death

  1274. would pass

  1275. over him.

  1276. Again,

  1277. like this,

  1278. right?

  1279. A sacrifice

  1280. had to be

  1281. made,

  1282. but not

  1283. quite,

  1284. right?

  1285. There's a

  1286. type,

  1287. like the

  1288. spotless

  1289. lamb that

  1290. was killed

  1291. for that

  1292. reason.

  1293. Then there's

  1294. what's called

  1295. the anti-type,

  1296. right?

  1297. The fulfillment

  1298. of the

  1299. actual thing

  1300. that it's

  1301. being pointed

  1302. to.

  1303. So the

  1304. Old Testament

  1305. is full

  1306. of this.

  1307. Graham

  1308. Cole,

  1309. a contemporary

  1310. scholar,

  1311. defined

  1312. typology,

  1313. in this

  1314. way.

  1315. Typology is

  1316. the idea

  1317. that persons,

  1318. events,

  1319. and institutions

  1320. can,

  1321. in the

  1322. plan of

  1323. God,

  1324. prefigure a

  1325. later stage

  1326. in that

  1327. plan and

  1328. provide the

  1329. conceptuality

  1330. necessary for

  1331. understanding the

  1332. divine intent.

  1333. You know what

  1334. that means?

  1335. That if the

  1336. Old Testament

  1337. is in fact

  1338. full of these

  1339. kinds of

  1340. typologies,

  1341. that the

  1342. New Testament

  1343. is going to

  1344. be so much

  1345. richer to

  1346. you as you

  1347. read the

  1348. Old Testament,

  1349. as you come

  1350. to understand

  1351. that part of

  1352. this redemptive

  1353. narrative is

  1354. going to

  1355. become much,

  1356. much more

  1357. alive to

  1358. you.

  1359. Our New

  1360. Testament

  1361. writers quoted

  1362. the Old

  1363. Testament all

  1364. the time.

  1365. They're

  1366. constantly

  1367. pulling from

  1368. it.

  1369. They're

  1370. constantly

  1371. pulling it

  1372. in.

  1373. We shouldn't

  1374. unhitch our

  1375. faith from

  1376. the Old

  1377. Testament.

  1378. In fact,

  1379. our faith

  1380. should be

  1381. rich with

  1382. the Old

  1383. Testament

  1384. because it

  1385. helps us

  1386. to understand

  1387. our Christ.

  1388. It helps us

  1389. to fully

  1390. realize everything

  1391. that he came

  1392. and accomplished

  1393. and will

  1394. accomplish.

  1395. And we

  1396. want to be

  1397. careful with

  1398. typology.

  1399. It is

  1400. possible to

  1401. allegorize all

  1402. of the Bible.

  1403. We don't

  1404. want to be

  1405. doing this.

  1406. This is not

  1407. a healthy

  1408. thing to

  1409. do, but

  1410. we can

  1411. also miss

  1412. so much

  1413. of the

  1414. richness of

  1415. the text

  1416. if we don't

  1417. examine it

  1418. closely.

  1419. Jonathan Edwards

  1420. encouraged a

  1421. typological

  1422. reading of the

  1423. Old Testament.

  1424. He said,

  1425. the apostle

  1426. himself teaches

  1427. us that only

  1428. so small a

  1429. thing as the

  1430. silence of

  1431. scripture is

  1432. in not giving

  1433. an account of

  1434. Melchizedek's

  1435. birth nor

  1436. death was

  1437. typological.

  1438. This is

  1439. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  1440. 7.

  1441. The author

  1442. of Hebrews

  1443. says he had

  1444. no beginning

  1445. and no end

  1446. simply because

  1447. the scripture

  1448. doesn't tell us

  1449. that there was

  1450. a beginning

  1451. and an end

  1452. to Melchizedek.

  1453. Of course,

  1454. he does that

  1455. under inspiration,

  1456. but it gives

  1457. us some clues

  1458. like, wait,

  1459. there's some

  1460. rich things

  1461. happening in

  1462. the Old Testament.

  1463. Edward goes

  1464. on to say,

  1465. if so small

  1466. things in

  1467. scripture are

  1468. typological,

  1469. it is rational

  1470. to suppose that

  1471. scripture abounds

  1472. with types.

  1473. So with

  1474. this in

  1475. mind, I

  1476. want to

  1477. show you

  1478. three types

  1479. from this

  1480. text that

  1481. speak to

  1482. the proper

  1483. object of

  1484. faith, but

  1485. before I can

  1486. do so, we

  1487. need to

  1488. understand the

  1489. significance of

  1490. the Jordan

  1491. crossing.

  1492. I think a lot

  1493. of us in our

  1494. minds have

  1495. this very

  1496. insignificant

  1497. picture of

  1498. the Jordan

  1499. crossing.

  1500. The Jordan

  1501. River is not

  1502. as large as

  1503. the Red

  1504. Sea, so

  1505. our minds

  1506. really ought

  1507. to be

  1508. hearkening

  1509. back to

  1510. the Exodus

  1511. crossing.

  1512. This is

  1513. again that

  1514. same pattern

  1515. being done

  1516. again.

  1517. This is a

  1518. new generation.

  1519. They're going

  1520. to cross

  1521. over waters.

  1522. And you'll

  1523. see some

  1524. people will

  1525. argue this

  1526. really wasn't

  1527. very significant,

  1528. the passing

  1529. over the

  1530. Jordans,

  1531. smaller, more

  1532. of a creek

  1533. than a river,

  1534. so to speak.

  1535. But there are

  1536. some places

  1537. that it's

  1538. very big,

  1539. and there's

  1540. something really

  1541. specific in

  1542. the text that

  1543. helps us to

  1544. know, no,

  1545. this is actually

  1546. a pretty substantial

  1547. event, and that

  1548. is the

  1549. parenthetical in

  1550. verse 15.

  1551. Now the

  1552. Jordan overflows

  1553. all its

  1554. banks throughout

  1555. the time of

  1556. harvest.

  1557. So it's not

  1558. just the Jordan

  1559. River, it's the

  1560. Jordan River

  1561. flooded.

  1562. It is outside

  1563. of its banks.

  1564. Anytime a river

  1565. floods, we get

  1566. big rains like

  1567. this and the

  1568. water comes up.

  1569. I used to be a

  1570. whitewater kayaker,

  1571. we loved rainy

  1572. weather because

  1573. water came up.

  1574. But I will tell

  1575. you when water

  1576. comes out of its

  1577. banks, it's a

  1578. whole other level

  1579. of flood.

  1580. Things get

  1581. dangerous when

  1582. that happens.

  1583. We had a time

  1584. when it rained

  1585. and rained and

  1586. rained.

  1587. I had like a

  1588. week of solid

  1589. rain, and all

  1590. of the big

  1591. rivers that we

  1592. like to go

  1593. paddle were

  1594. too big.

  1595. I mean,

  1596. dangerous,

  1597. dangerous,

  1598. dangerous.

  1599. So me and a

  1600. friend went and

  1601. got on the

  1602. upper Chattahoochee,

  1603. which normally

  1604. is like a

  1605. little class

  1606. two river,

  1607. not a real

  1608. big deal, but

  1609. it was flood

  1610. stage like.

  1611. The parking

  1612. lot we normally

  1613. parked in was

  1614. underwater, and

  1615. we just were

  1616. young and dumb

  1617. and thought,

  1618. sure, let's

  1619. get on.

  1620. And we

  1621. weren't too

  1622. far downstream

  1623. from our

  1624. vehicles.

  1625. When I looked

  1626. over to my

  1627. right, and a

  1628. tree, its roots

  1629. and everything

  1630. lifted up out

  1631. of the water.

  1632. It had been

  1633. underwater, so it

  1634. got caught on

  1635. something.

  1636. The current

  1637. picked it up out

  1638. of the water,

  1639. 40 feet in the

  1640. air.

  1641. A tree just

  1642. emerged from

  1643. the water, and

  1644. it came crashing

  1645. back down.

1646. And I said to my

  1647. friend, Kevin, I'm

  1648. not sure we should

  1649. be on the river

  1650. right now.

  1651. And Kevin in

  1652. classic form said,

  1653. it'll be all

  1654. right.

  1655. And it was,

  1656. praise God.

  1657. We survived.

  1658. But this is

  1659. significant, right?

  1660. The Jordan is

  1661. flooded, right?

  1662. This is a massive

  1663. amount of water

  1664. that's moving

  1665. downstream.

  1666. It has overflowed

  1667. all of its

  1668. banks.

  1669. Now, we could

  1670. go, okay, so

  1671. that's the extent

  1672. of that, right?

  1673. It's just the fact

  1674. that it's flooded.

  1675. God's going to

  1676. move a lot of

  1677. water around.

  1678. Wonderful.

  1679. God is doing a

  1680. mighty work.

  1681. But floods and

  1682. flooding are used

  1683. both in reality,

  1684. right?

  1685. Genesis chapter

  1686. six, God judges

  1687. the world with a

  1688. flood, puts a

  1689. bow in the sky,

  1690. promises to never

  1691. judge the entire

  1692. world through a

  1693. flood again.

  1694. But floods are

  1695. still spoken of all

  1696. throughout the

  1697. scripture in terms

  1698. of judgment,

  1699. right?

  1700. Judgment and

  1701. deliverance from

  1702. judgment all over

  1703. the text, like

  1704. used metaphorically

  1705. in many, many

  1706. places.

  1707. I'm going to show

  1708. you a few of

  1709. those.

  1710. I'm going to

  1711. move really

  1712. quick here.

  1713. Job 27 and

  1714. chapter 20.

  1715. Terrors overtake

  1716. the wicked man

  1717. like a flood.

  1718. In the night, a

  1719. whirlwind carries

  1720. him off.

  1721. Psalm 69,

    Psalms 69:1

  1722. verse 1 and 2.

  1723. Save me, O God,

  1724. for the waters

  1725. have come up to

  1726. my neck.

  1727. I stand in deep

  1728. mire where there

  1729. is no foothold.

  1730. I have come into

  1731. deep waters and

  1732. the flood sweeps

  1733. over me.

  1734. Nahum, chapter 1

    Nahum 1 chapter mention

  1735. and verse 8.

  1736. But with an

  1737. overwhelming flood,

  1738. he will make a

  1739. complete end of

  1740. the adversaries

  1741. and will pursue

  1742. his enemies

  1743. into darkness.

  1744. Right?

  1745. So lots of this

  1746. kind of imagery

  1747. exists in the

  1748. scripture.

  1749. And I believe

  1750. that Joshua means

  1751. for your mind to

  1752. pop off when you

  1753. see this flooded

  1754. waters.

  1755. They're about to

  1756. cross over flooded

  1757. waters.

  1758. What's happened so

  1759. far in the narrative

  1760. with flood?

  1761. Right?

  1762. We've got the

  1763. Genesis 6 flood,

  1764. a judgment of the

  1765. world.

  1766. Right?

  1767. We've got the

  1768. deliverance from

  1769. Egypt.

  1770. And then what

  1771. happens after

  1772. Israel crosses

  1773. over on dry

  1774. land?

  1775. Someone's judged.

  1776. Right?

  1777. All the pursuers

  1778. from Egypt, the

  1779. army gets judged

  1780. by the waters

  1781. coming back

  1782. together, flooding,

  1783. covering over

  1784. them.

  1785. So there's this

  1786. picture of

  1787. deliverance through

  1788. flood.

  1789. And our biblical

  1790. authors pick this

  1791. theme up as well.

  1792. Psalm 124,

  1793. beginning in verse

  1794. 1.

1795. If it had not been

  1796. the Lord who

  1797. was on our

  1798. side, let

  1799. Israel now say

  1800. if it had not

  1801. been the Lord who

  1802. was on our

  1803. side, when

  1804. people rose up

  1805. against us, then

  1806. they would have

  1807. swallowed us up

  1808. alive when their

  1809. anger was kindled

  1810. against us.

  1811. Then the flood

  1812. would have swept

  1813. us away.

  1814. The torrent would

  1815. have gone over

  1816. us.

  1817. Right?

  1818. So David in that

  1819. psalm says, if God

  1820. had not been on

  1821. our side, that's

  1822. what would have

  1823. happened to us.

  1824. But because he

  1825. was, we were

  1826. delivered.

  1827. Psalm 18,

  1828. beginning in verse

  1829. 15 and following,

  1830. then the channels of

  1831. the sea were seen

  1832. and the foundations

  1833. of the world were

  1834. laid bare at your

  1835. rebuke, O Lord, at

  1836. the blast of the

  1837. breath of your

  1838. nostrils.

  1839. He sent from on

  1840. high.

  1841. He took me.

1842. He drew me out of

  1843. many waters.

  1844. He rescued me from

  1845. my strong enemy and

  1846. from those who hated

  1847. me, for they were

  1848. too mighty for me.

  1849. They confronted me

1850. in the day of my

  1851. calamity, but the

  1852. Lord was my support.

  1853. He brought me out

  1854. into a broad place.

  1855. He rescued me

  1856. because he delighted

  1857. in me.

  1858. So you see this,

  1859. this is the kind

  1860. of things, the

  1861. imagery that should

  1862. be popping off in

  1863. our brain as we're

  1864. reading this account.

  1865. And yet, God

  1866. delivers them safely

  1867. through.

  1868. Safely through.

  1869. Verse 15,

  1870. So picture this flood

  1871. plain.

  1872. It got pushed way

  1873. back upstream.

1874. And as far as we can

  1875. tell, right, from

  1876. historical maps to

  1877. this city.

  1878. I mean, I think it's

  1879. probably properly

  1880. pronounced Adam, but

  1881. we say Adam.

  1882. So five miles upstream.

  1883. So significantly

  1884. upstream.

  1885. And it's piled up in a

  1886. massive heap.

  1887. Not divided like the

  1888. Exodus waters from

  1889. Egypt, right?

  1890. But in this case,

  1891. piled up upstream and

  1892. everything else is

  1893. dried out down below

  1894. them.

  1895. Right?

  1896. I think this is

  1897. because God is

  1898. declaring to the

  1899. peoples that they're

  1900. about to cross over

  1901. into, here comes

  1902. Israel, right?

  1903. Could he have walled

  1904. it off right there

  1905. where they were?

  1906. Of course he could

  1907. have.

  1908. But he pushes it

  1909. way upstream to

  1910. dry up the land.

  1911. And there's all these

1912. cities in the land that

  1913. have seen something

  1914. miraculous is happening

  1915. here, right?

  1916. You have to imagine

  1917. that they would have

  1918. heard that this great

  1919. group of people has

  1920. now crossed into this

  1921. land because those

  1922. waters were dried up,

  1923. right?

  1924. They were completely

1925. cut off, it says at

  1926. the end of verse

  1927. 16, and the people

  1928. passed over opposite

  1929. Jericho.

  1930. Okay, so this is

  1931. what's happening in

  1932. this story, right?

  1933. It's really happening,

  1934. but it's also meant

  1935. to help us understand

  1936. something greater,

  1937. right?

  1938. A deliverance through

  1939. flood is the theme

  1940. we pick back up.

1941. And so we see three

  1942. types for Christ in

  1943. the text.

  1944. First, Joshua.

  1945. Joshua, his name

  1946. means God is

  1947. salvation.

  1948. In the Hebrew, it's

  1949. Yeshua.

  1950. That's what the very

  1951. name of Jesus is,

  1952. right?

  1953. So God is salvation.

1954. So this Joshua is a

  1955. type for the eventual

  1956. Joshua, right?

  1957. Jesus Christ himself.

  1958. He leads the people

  1959. into the promised land,

  1960. right?

1961. But Joshua and the land

  1962. were typological.

  1963. We read in Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  1964. chapter 3, beginning

  1965. of verse 7 and

  1966. through chapter 4.

  1967. And I'm going to

  1968. spare you the reading

1969. of it for the sake of

  1970. time because I know

  1971. I'm running long

  1972. today.

  1973. But the author of

  1974. Hebrews says that

  1975. Joshua did not lead

  1976. the people into that

  1977. final rest.

1978. And he helps us to

  1979. understand that there

  1980. is a greater final

1981. rest, a way that is

  1982. open to us.

  1983. And he says,

  1984. chapter 4,

  1985. verse 3,

  1986. for we who have

  1987. believed enter that

  1988. rest.

  1989. As he has said,

1990. as I swore in my

  1991. wrath, they shall not

  1992. enter my rest.

  1993. He's talking about that

  1994. generation that did not

1995. get to go into the

  1996. promised land, although

  1997. his works were finished

  1998. from the foundation of

  1999. the world.

  2000. For he has somewhere

  2001. spoke of the seventh

2002. day in this way, and

  2003. God rested on the

  2004. seventh day from all

  2005. his works.

  2006. And again in this

  2007. passage he said,

  2008. they shall not enter

  2009. my rest.

2010. He goes on to say,

  2011. so then there remains

  2012. Sabbath rest for the

  2013. people of God.

  2014. For whoever has

  2015. entered God's rest has

  2016. also rested from his

2017. works as God did from

  2018. his.

  2019. So we're supposed to

2020. see that in this text,

  2021. right?

  2022. The New Testament

  2023. reality is meant to

2024. make this come to life

  2025. for us.

  2026. It's teaching us

  2027. something about the

  2028. anti-type, Jesus

  2029. Christ.

2030. He's going to lead us

  2031. into the inheritance

  2032. that is ours in

  2033. Christ.

  2034. Secondly, the

  2035. Levites, right?

  2036. These were priests.

  2037. These were those who

  2038. went before God on

  2039. behalf of the people.

  2040. Again, Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10:11

  2041. 10, verse 11, and

  2042. every priest stands

  2043. daily at his service

  2044. offering repeatedly the

  2045. same sacrifices which

  2046. can never take away

  2047. sins.

  2048. But when Christ had

  2049. offered for a single

  2050. time a single

  2051. sacrifice for sins, he

2052. sat down at the right

  2053. hand of God, waiting

  2054. from that time until

  2055. his enemies should be

  2056. made a footstool for

  2057. his feet.

  2058. For by a single

  2059. offering he has

  2060. perfected for all time

  2061. those who are being

  2062. sanctified, right?

2063. So you have a group

  2064. of Levitical priests

  2065. standing in the water

  2066. that becomes dry

  2067. ground on behalf of

  2068. the people, right?

  2069. The people are carried

  2070. safely through because

  2071. these men stand in

  2072. that place, right?

  2073. They're meant to help

  2074. us see Christ.

  2075. They're the type.

  2076. Jesus is the anti-type,

  2077. right?

  2078. The perfect high

  2079. priest.

2080. We no longer have need

  2081. for priests, right?

  2082. I am not a priest, right?

2083. We do not have an

  2084. altar.

  2085. We do not continually

  2086. make sacrifice, right?

  2087. Because Jesus made a

  2088. sacrifice of himself

  2089. once for all.

  2090. And then finally, the

  2091. last type is the

  2092. ark itself.

  2093. The ark itself.

2094. The ark was the most

  2095. significant object in

  2096. old covenant worship.

  2097. It's a box overlaid

  2098. with gold.

  2099. And when it was

  2100. tabernacled or in the

  2101. temple, right, it was

2102. located in the Holy of

  2103. Holies, right?

  2104. Here, they're on the

  2105. move.

2106. So it is now moving

  2107. with them.

  2108. A golden urn holding

  2109. the manna and Aaron's

  2110. staff that budded and

  2111. the tablets of the

  2112. covenant were placed

  2113. within the ark.

  2114. Hebrews 9, 4 repeats

  2115. this for us.

  2116. The mercy seat covered

  2117. the box.

  2118. Images of two cherubim

  2119. facing one another

  2120. overshadowed the mercy

  2121. seat.

  2122. When God came down,

2123. dwelt in the Holy of

  2124. Holies, his glory

  2125. rested above the

  2126. mercy seat.

  2127. This visible glory

  2128. rested there between

  2129. these two cherubim.

  2130. Right?

2131. This was the place that

  2132. the sacrifice was made.

  2133. The day of atonement

  2134. sacrifice was made.

2135. Also meant to point us

  2136. to Christ.

  2137. But all of this

  2138. elaborate picture of

  2139. God's dwelling place,

  2140. the ark itself,

2141. is a picture of the

  2142. person and saving

  2143. work of Christ.

  2144. Christ.

  2145. You remember, if you

  2146. hear the telling of

  2147. the Holy of Holies,

  2148. the temple curtain

  2149. torn from top to

  2150. bottom, that temple

  2151. curtain when Jesus

  2152. died that was torn,

  2153. granting access to God.

  2154. Anybody know what was

  2155. on the curtains?

  2156. Two cherubim, right?

  2157. Standing over that.

  2158. When Mary Magdalene

  2159. goes and finds Jesus,

  2160. he's gone.

  2161. He's gone from the

  2162. tomb.

  2163. What's on either side

  2164. of the tomb?

  2165. Two cherubim, right?

  2166. There's two angels in

  2167. that place.

2168. When we see the ark

  2169. in the Old Testament,

  2170. we're supposed to be

  2171. seeing Christ.

  2172. So again, carried and

2173. held in the middle of

2174. this river so that the

2175. water is pushed back up.

  2176. It's in a heap, five

  2177. miles upstream.

  2178. This judgment is being

  2179. held back by something

2180. that's meant to help us

  2181. understand Christ.

  2182. So we are saved

  2183. through the flood

  2184. because of Jesus.

2185. So I hope this morning

  2186. that you're finding

  2187. yourself in a place

  2188. where you can rejoice

  2189. with all of this.

2190. You can say yes and

  2191. amen to every single

  2192. bit of it.

  2193. If you're not,

2194. I'm going to pray for

  2195. you now.

  2196. So let's pray together.
