  1. Our text for this morning is Isaiah 56.

  2. We're going to be going through verses 1-8.

  3. I'll give you all a moment to turn there.

  4. But as we're looking at this text, I'll just say up front, we're going to be thinking about it somewhat broadly with the topic of missions as it pertains to the Old Testament and as it relates to God's overarching redemptive plan throughout the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation.

  5. Many of us have asked questions before like, did God adjust his plan to save Gentiles or has he always planned that?

  6. Another way that can be asked is, does the Old Testament ever actually talk about God planning to save Gentiles?

  7. And on top of that, you might ask, did God save Gentiles in the Old Testament or was it merely talk or hinted at in something that didn't happen until New Testament?

  8. And furthermore, why does God save?

  9. To what end or what purpose is he saving has chosen?

  10. So this is a sampling of some of the things we're going to be talking about today through our text, Isaiah 56.

  11. So turning there, verse 1, thus says the Lord, Isaiah writes, thus says the Lord, keep justice and do righteousness for soon my salvation will come and my righteousness be revealed.

  12. Blessed is the man who does this and is the son of man who keeps and holds it fast.

  13. Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say, the Lord will surely separate me from his people.

  14. And let not the eunuch say, behold, I am a dry tree.

  15. But thus says the Lord to the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant.

  16. I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters.

  17. I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.

  18. And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord and to be his servants,

  19. everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it and holds fast my covenant,

  20. these I will bring to my holy mountain and make them joyful in my house of prayer.

  21. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar.

  22. From my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

  23. The Lord God who gathers the outcasts of Israel declares, I will yet gather others to him besides those already gathered.

  24. So just real quickly here, a little context.

  25. Again, Clay preached on Isaiah 40 last week and did most of the grunt work for me in laying that.

  26. But I just wanted to note two things that are pertinent for our discussion today.

  27. One, it is important to note that Isaiah is a contemporary of Hosea and Micah.

  28. And if you're familiar with Isaiah, if you're familiar with Hosea and Micah,

  29. you recall that those prophets are constantly calling out Israel and Judah for their sin,

  30. namely injustice and a lack of righteousness.

  31. They're worshiping foreign gods.

  32. At this point, it was a nation that exploited the poor and the vulnerable while worshiping these false gods

  33. and only giving external ritualistic worship to Yahweh,

  34. not true single-minded devotion as he has called for.

  35. So that's important to note.

  36. And the other thing I wanted to note contextually before we move on

  37. is that we need to bear in mind that Israel and Judah are on the verge of collapse.

  38. God has been announcing his judgment.

  39. It's been withheld at times through the prayers of Hezekiah and other intercessions.

  40. But nonetheless, it is on the way, and the Babylonians will drag them away into captivity, into exile.

  41. And they're going to be in exile for a while, and there's going to be three dispersions.

  42. So we want to keep that in mind as we read this text with all that God's saying in it,

  43. all that God is planning, all that God is doing.

  44. So just looking at verses 1 through 2, and I've subtitled this section,

  45. A Call to Righteousness.

  46. And I'll read it again briefly, but we see here the Lord says,

  47. So this is not works-based salvation.

  48. Paul's very clear on this in Galatians.

  49. Tyler read this text for us this morning.

  50. We didn't collaborate.

  51. That just worked out.

  52. But Paul writes,

  53. For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse.

  54. For it is written,

  55. Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the law and do them.

  56. Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law.

  57. For the righteous shall live by faith.

  58. Galatians 3, verse 10 through 11.

    Galatians 3:10–11

  59. So Isaiah himself understood the logical flow of this.

  60. He understood regeneration leading to sanctification.

  61. In other words, we have to be made right, made new.

  62. And then we can grow in holiness, grow in obedience.

  63. Regeneration precedes sanctification.

  64. And Isaiah recognizes this, and we see that in chapter 1, verses 16 through 17, as he records the Lord.

  65. And the Lord said,

  66. Wash yourselves.

  67. Make yourselves clean.

  68. It's that regeneration language.

  69. Remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes.

  70. Cease to do evil.

  71. Learn to do good.

  72. There's the sanctification.

  73. That idea of turning.

  74. Total repentance.

  75. 180 degree.

  76. Learn to do good.

  77. Seek justice.

  78. Correct oppression.

  79. Bring justice to the fatherless.

  80. Plead the widow's cause.

  81. So again, the flow.

  82. It goes from washing, that renewal, that regeneration,

  83. to sanctification, to doing good, to stop doing evil.

  84. So what is God saying in our first two verses back in our primary text, Isaiah 56?

  85. He's saying that the true people of God will and should act like people of God.

  86. They should be godly as a result of their faith.

  87. God is just.

  88. Isaiah 61.8.

  89. So as his people, we too should act justly.

  90. God is righteous.

  91. Psalm 119.137.

  92. So as his people, we too should act righteously.

  93. Keeping justice.

  94. Doing righteousness.

  95. This is why God mentions the nearness of his kingdom.

  96. And arriving in the later half of verse 1,

  97. for soon my salvation will come and my righteousness be revealed.

  98. This serves as a reminder and an incentive.

  99. Hey, I'm coming.

  100. Let that incentivize you.

  101. In other words, we practice righteousness now because one day we will be made entirely renewed

  102. and completely obedient from the heart.

  103. And if we're not acting like citizens of heaven now,

  104. then we have no reason to think we will be someday.

  105. All right, we should be putting on the things of God now.

  106. And we can only be the people of God by faith.

  107. And that faith produces those good works.

  108. It bears fruit, as Jesus himself said,

  109. I am the vine, you are the branches.

  110. Whoever abides in me and I in him,

  111. he it is that bears much fruit.

  112. For apart from me you can do nothing.

  113. That's John 15.5.

  114. So we cannot keep justice nor do righteousness apart from Christ by faith.

  115. So going back to our text, Isaiah 56,

  116. we see that God says all of this, justice and righteousness language,

  117. all of that is in relation to his covenant with Moses in verse 2,

  118. when he refers to those who keep the Sabbath.

  119. Keeping the Sabbath is the most important sign of the Mosaic covenant.

  120. Exodus 31.12.

  121. And the Lord said to Moses,

  122. you are to speak to the people of Israel and say,

  123. above all, you shall keep my Sabbaths.

  124. But this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations,

  125. that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.

  126. You shall keep the Sabbath because it is holy for you.

  127. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death.

  128. So this is of vital importance.

  129. In other words, when an Israelite is looking at this text,

  130. they're not just hearing, oh, Sabbath law,

  131. they're hearing Mosaic covenant.

  132. Understanding this is in connection with covenant.

  133. So when we look at that, we've got to go,

  134. okay, well, what's going on?

  135. Well, it's an external sign like practicing righteousness and keeping justice.

  136. It's revealing what's going on internally.

  137. It's revealing that regeneration, that salvation,

  138. that demonstrates one's belief in God

  139. to provide and sustain him.

  140. It is an exercise of faith

  141. because keeping the Sabbath requires people to not work seven days a week

  142. despite whatever shortage of food or what have you,

  143. whatever problem they may face.

  144. In other words, it could potentially be a loss in the worldly sense

  145. when you're thinking about it pragmatically.

  146. So for them to give up a whole day of work

  147. in a time in which food is everything, right?

  148. Farming, harvesting, that's how everything's driven at that time.

  149. That is an act of faith.

  150. So we see then it is entirely by faith that we are able to meet the standards of God

  151. because we are all lawbreakers, both Jew and Gentile, Romans 3.23.

  152. So we show this faith by our works,

  153. as James and Paul most clearly articulate throughout their epistles.

  154. It is by faith that saints of both Old Testament and New Testament,

  155. Old Covenant, New Covenant, are saved.

  156. For even Abraham himself, the father of our faith,

  157. as you've heard the expression, was saved by just that, faith.

  158. So in short, we as a people of God,

  159. in light of these first two verses,

  160. we are called to be holy for he is holy, Leviticus 11.44.

  161. And this only happens by faith.

  162. So moving on to our next section,

  163. verses 3 through 5,

  164. and I've entitled this a reminder of the promise to Abraham.

  165. So we're talking about the Mosaic Covenant,

  166. and we're about to move into the Abrahamic Covenant.

  167. But picking up in verse 3,

  168. God says,

  169. So again, this is hearkening back to the Abrahamic Covenant.

  170. God promised Abraham that he would father many nations,

  171. and that all of those nations would be blessed by him and his descendants.

  172. Genesis 22.18.

  173. In his offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.

  174. So again, looking back at Isaiah 56,

  175. we can see that the foreigner, right, the nations, right,

  176. the foreigner here,

  177. he is being brought near.

  178. He has as much reason to hope in God as the Israelites,

  179. as the physical seed of Abraham does.

  180. So they too, as the seed of faith,

  181. they have as much reason to hope in God,

  182. so long as they come to God on God's own terms,

  183. namely through his covenant.

  184. But did foreigners ever actually become part of the people of God in the Old Testament?

  185. Did God save them during that time, right?

  186. This is that question I mentioned earlier.

  187. And the answer is, well, yes.

  188. There's actually a significant amount, but I'll note just four briefly.

  189. Mosea's wife, if you've been doing the Bible reading plan,

  190. you probably caught this this week,

  191. but Zipporah was a Midianite who joined the covenant by circumcising her son.

  192. Exodus 4.25-26.

  193. So here you have a foreigner being blessed by Moses by way of covenant,

  194. being brought in, being grafted in.

  195. Two, many Gentiles, likely to be mostly Egyptian,

  196. joined the Israelites on their exodus.

  197. Exodus 12.3 says,

  198. And granted, many of them rebelled later on,

  199. but it's not a total rebellion by all of them.

  200. It's never really clear on that, but I think we can infer

  201. many of them probably remained faithful

  202. and partook of the covenant as Zipporah did.

  203. Another individual is Ruth.

  204. She was a Moabite who joined in the covenant with God

  205. and was part of Christ's lineage.

  206. Ruth 1.4, Matthew 1.5-6.

  207. And finally, and probably most notably, most famously

  208. in the entire Old Testament,

  209. is the city of Nineveh.

  210. Repented and turned to God,

  211. and their salvation in a broad sense

  212. was confirmed by Christ himself, Matthew 12.41.

  213. A great New Testament picture of these eunuchs and foreigners

  214. who entered the covenant that God is speaking of

  215. is found in Acts 8 with the Ethiopian eunuch.

  216. The Ethiopian eunuch, who is both a foreigner

  217. and obviously a eunuch,

  218. was reading Isaiah 53, 7-8,

  219. when Philip encountered him.

  220. Of course, we all know the story.

  221. Philip uses that text to preach to him about Christ,

  222. forgiveness of sins,

  223. and being made new and aright with God

  224. by way of Christ, by way of the cross,

  225. death, resurrection.

  226. And that results in the Ethiopian repenting of his sin,

  227. and Philip baptizes him in the name of the Father,

  228. the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  229. This is just one of many fulfillments of Isaiah's prophecy

  230. of the eunuchs and foreigners

  231. who become God's people.

  232. The Ethiopian eunuch came to God

  233. by way of God's new covenant,

  234. which includes the external sign of baptism.

  235. So though there's some discontinuity

  236. in the exact external signs,

  237. there's much continuity in terms of

  238. the meaning behind it,

  239. the faith behind it.

  240. It's all by faith.

  241. And it's interesting, too,

  242. because Deuteronomy 23, 1

  243. forbids any eunuchs

  244. from coming into the presence of Israel

  245. and the Lord for worship.

  246. But here, Isaiah speaks of an elimination

  247. of that restriction.

  248. It no longer bears.

  249. It's not the same, right?

  250. Now the eunuch is called to serve God

  251. and be in right standing with him,

  252. as is the foreigner.

  253. So the eunuch should not be discouraged

  254. that he is a dry tree,

  255. as our text writes,

  256. which is meaning unable to reproduce,

  257. because God has made provision

  258. for the eunuch to keep the Sabbath

  259. and enter a covenant relationship with him.

  260. The reminder of the Abrahamic covenant

  261. means a lot of things,

  262. but we cannot overlook

  263. the missional aspect of it

  264. as it is so, I think, critical to this text,

  265. I think is central to this text in many ways.

  266. Again, Genesis 22, 18 shows us that

  267. God's plan for Abraham,

  268. and by extension Israel,

  269. has always been to bless the nations,

  270. the foreigners, the eunuchs.

  271. This means God has always intended to save

  272. both Jews and Gentiles,

  273. as it's been part of his predetermined plan.

  274. God is about the work of drawing a people for himself

  275. from every tribe, tongue, and nation,

  276. Revelation 7, 9.

  277. And Paul, the apostle,

  278. confirms the good news of the Abrahamic covenant,

  279. the gospel of it,

  280. when he writes,

  281. in the scripture,

  282. foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,

  283. preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham,

  284. saying,

  285. In you shall all the nations be blessed.

  286. So then, those who are of faith

  287. are blessed along with Abraham,

  288. the man of faith.

  289. Galatians 3, 8 through 9.

  290. And just a nice little verse here in the Old Testament,

  291. I think somewhat captures this well,

  292. beautifully,

  293. is from Isaiah's contemporary,

  294. Hosea.

  295. We recorded the word of the Lord,

  296. and declared,

  297. and this is the Lord speaking,

  298. I will have mercy on no mercy,

  299. and I will say to not my people,

  300. you are my people.

  301. And he shall say,

  302. you are my God.

  303. Isaiah 2, 23.

  304. And that's such a beautiful picture,

  305. when you consider it,

  306. because I'm just going off the faces here,

  307. but I think everybody in here

  308. is probably more Gentile than not.

  309. And this means,

  310. we too are grafted in,

  311. we too are part of that blessing,

  312. we too can be brought into that covenant.

  313. This is news that should cause us to leap for joy,

  314. we're not cut off from Israel,

  315. but we are brought in by faith.

  316. And a quick word of encouragement as well,

  317. keep in mind the context.

  318. So going back,

  319. I mentioned Israel and Judah

  320. are about to be dragged out,

  321. away from the promised land,

  322. away from the covenant land.

  323. They're going to be Babylon's captives for their sin.

  324. God's prophesying this through his prophets.

  325. They're being punished for their injustice

  326. and unrighteousness.

  327. That's about to happen,

  328. in just a short while.

  329. And yet our text here is very encouraging.

  330. It seems to be talking about people being gathered

  331. on the holy hill,

  332. which we'll come back to.

  333. But meanwhile,

  334. the Babylonians,

  335. similar to the Assyrians,

  336. they're thinking that they were mightier,

  337. and that their gods were the true gods,

  338. and that the Hebrew God,

  339. our God,

  340. Yahweh,

  341. was weak.

  342. They thought they were conquering Israel

  343. because of their greatness,

  344. their merit,

  345. their things,

  346. their whatever.

  347. But they failed to recognize

  348. that God was merely using them

  349. as a tool

  350. for his purposes,

  351. namely,

  352. the carrying out of Israel's punishment,

  353. which was most fitting

  354. for a couple reasons.

  355. They were guilty of injustice,

  356. as I've said so many times now,

  357. and now their punishment

  358. is that they will serve as slaves

  359. in an unjust Babylonian society.

  360. Another reason it's fitting

  361. is that Israel failed to be

  362. a blessing to the nations.

  363. They failed to draw people in

  364. and gather them

  365. for worship,

  366. as God had ordained.

  367. But even now,

  368. in the midst of their punishment

  369. for their sin,

  370. God is still accomplishing

  371. his plan to gather people

  372. for Israel to be a blessing

  373. to the nations,

  374. as they are now about

  375. to be dragged out

  376. to the nations

  377. to proclaim the glory of God.

  378. And two obvious examples of that

  379. are Daniel and Esther,

  380. and just consider the many ways

  381. in which they glorified God

  382. in pagan lands

  383. among the nations.

  384. So I'm mentioning all this to say

  385. that regardless of what persecutions

  386. we face,

  387. regardless of what trials

  388. or obstacles arise,

  389. and even despite our own sin,

  390. nothing will thwart

  391. or oppose the plans of God.

  392. Nothing's going to get in his way

  393. of bringing the nations

  394. to gather,

  395. to worship.

  396. So God is calling his people

  397. to keep justice

  398. and practice righteousness

  399. while also reminding his people

  400. that he is using each individual

  401. to bring about multiplication,

  402. that we should all be messengers

  403. of his good news

  404. and witness the expansion

  405. of his kingdom

  406. as free captives

  407. from their sin.

  408. But why?

  409. To what end

  410. is he doing this?

  411. And this leads us

  412. to our final section,

  413. verses 6 through 8.

  414. And I've subtitled this,

  415. Those God Gathers

  416. Will Worship.

  417. Starting in verse 6 again,

  418. And the foreigners

  419. who join themselves

  420. to the Lord

  421. to minister to him

  422. to love the name of the Lord

  423. and to be his servants,

  424. everyone who keeps the Sabbath

  425. and does not profane it

  426. and holds fast my covenant,

  427. these I will bring

  428. to my holy mountain

  429. and make them joyful

  430. in my house of prayer.

  431. Their burnt offerings

  432. and their sacrifices

  433. will be accepted

  434. on my altar.

  435. My house shall be called

  436. a house of prayer

  437. for all peoples.

  438. The Lord God

  439. who gathers the outcasts

  440. of Israel declares,

  441. I will gather yet others

  442. to him besides

  443. those already gathered.

  444. So the answer is clear.

  445. God gathers his chosen

  446. for the express purpose

  447. of worship.

  448. It is not enough

  449. that they are gathered.

  450. We know that God

  451. gathers people out of Egypt

  452. so that they would worship him,

  453. Exodus 7, 16.

  454. But as he was giving

  455. the law to Moses

  456. on Mount Sinai,

  457. they gathered to rebel

  458. by worshiping

  459. the golden calf.

  460. It's all Exodus 32.

  461. In Matthew 21,

  462. starting verse 12,

  463. we see many gathered

  464. at the temple,

  465. but Jesus drives them out.

  466. Why?

  467. Because they are not

  468. worshiping God rightly

  469. in his house of prayer.

  470. Further,

  471. their actions were wretched

  472. because this very house

  473. was meant to be

  474. a place of blessing

  475. for all people

  476. as they worshiped,

  477. and yet the merchants

  478. were using it

  479. as a den of thieves

  480. to rob people,

  481. to bring oppression,

  482. to serve injustice.

  483. The same problem

  484. we're seeing in Isaiah.

  485. They completely inverted

  486. God's expressed will

  487. and desire

  488. by their sinful rebellion.

  489. Again,

  490. it is not enough

  491. that the people are gathered.

  492. They must be gathered

  493. to worship.

  494. And Isaiah 56

  495. makes it clear

  496. that we are gathered

  497. to serve God,

  498. to love God,

  499. to offer sacrifices,

  500. prayers,

  501. and offerings.

  502. This is the language

  503. of worship,

  504. the language and actions

  505. of one who has

  506. truly denied himself,

  507. picked up his cross,

  508. and followed after Christ.

  509. If you will,

  510. turn with me real quickly

  511. to John chapter 4,

    John 4:20

  512. verse 20.

  513. This is the famous passage

  514. in which Jesus

  515. talks to the Samaritan woman

  516. at the well.

  517. Again,

  518. I think there's a lot

  519. of things going on here

  520. that are striking

  521. in comparison

  522. with Isaiah 56.

  523. Picking up in verse 20,

  524. the Samaritan woman

  525. is speaking,

  526. and she says,

  527. Our fathers worshipped

  528. on this mountain,

  529. but you,

  530. referring to Christ,

  531. but you say that

  532. in Jerusalem

  533. is the place

  534. where people ought

  535. to worship.

  536. Verse 21,

  537. Jesus said to her,

  538. Woman,

  539. believe me,

  540. the hour is coming

  541. when neither on this mountain

  542. nor in Jerusalem

  543. will you worship

  544. the Father.

  545. You worship

  546. what you do not know.

  547. We worship

  548. what we know,

  549. for salvation

  550. is from the Jews.

  551. But the hour is coming

  552. and is now here

  553. when the true worshippers

  554. will worship the Father

  555. in spirit and truth,

  556. for the Father

  557. is seeking such people

  558. to worship him.

  559. He's gathering them.

  560. Verse 24,

  561. God is spirit

  562. and those who worship him

  563. must worship

  564. in spirit and truth.

  565. The woman said to him,

  566. I know that the Messiah

  567. is coming,

  568. he who is called Christ.

  569. When he comes,

  570. he will tell us

  571. all things.

  572. Jesus said to her,

  573. I who speak to you

  574. am he.

  575. So a couple of observations.

  576. In the new covenant,

  577. the hill on which we worship

  578. is irrelevant.

  579. Neither on this mountain

  580. nor in Jerusalem,

  581. but we are able

  582. to worship the Lord

  583. everywhere

  584. now that we are

  585. indwelled by the Holy Spirit.

  586. We also see

  587. that Jesus,

  588. as the Son of God,

  589. echoes God the Father

  590. in Isaiah 56

  591. by clearly asserting

  592. that he is saving people

  593. for himself

  594. to worship in spirit

  595. and truth.

  596. We must be active

  597. about the work of obedience

  598. and doctrinal purity

  599. if we are to know

  600. and worship God rightly.

  601. It's all of 1 John.

  602. We know we love him

  603. if we keep his commands,

  604. we keep his word,

  605. we keep his law.

  606. We have to know him.

  607. And finally,

  608. Jesus Christ

  609. is God incarnate,

  610. the Holy One of Israel,

  611. whom we will worship

  612. one gathered

  613. for the marriage

  614. of the church

  615. and the Lamb of God.

  616. Revelation 19,

    Revelation 19:6

  617. verse 6,

  618. Then I heard

  619. what seemed to be

  620. the voice

  621. of a great multitude,

  622. like the roar

  623. of many waters

  624. and like the sound

  625. of mighty pearls

  626. of thunder,

  627. crying out,

  628. Hallelujah,

  629. for the Lord our God,

  630. the Almighty reigns.

  631. Let us rejoice

  632. and exalt,

  633. and give him the glory,

  634. for the marriage

  635. of the Lamb has come,

  636. and his bride

  637. has made herself ready.

  638. It was granted her

  639. to clothe herself

  640. with fine linen,

  641. bright and pure,

  642. for the fine linen

  643. is the righteous deeds

  644. of the saints.

  645. And the angel said to me,

  646. Write this,

  647. Blessed are those

  648. who are invited

  649. to the marriage supper

  650. of the Lamb.

  651. And he said to me,

  652. These are the true words

  653. of God.

  654. Then I,

  655. this is John speaking,

  656. Then I fell down

  657. at his feet

  658. to worship him,

  659. but he said to me,

  660. You must not do that.

  661. I am a fellow servant

  662. with you and your brothers

  663. who hold to the testimony

  664. of Jesus.

  665. Worship God,

  666. for the testimony

  667. of Jesus

  668. is the spirit

  669. of prophecy.

  670. The great multitude

  671. being made up

  672. of Jews

  673. and Gentiles,

  674. those whom God

  675. has called,

  676. they,

  677. we,

  678. will give him

  679. the glory.

  680. We will wear

  681. fine linen

  682. as we produce

  683. righteous deeds

  684. by faith,

  685. and we will

  686. be gathered

  687. and worship

  688. the Lord.

  689. So just three

  690. applications in closing.

  691. We want to be about

  692. the works of missions.

  693. By prayer,

  694. by giving,

  695. by encouraging,

  696. by serving.

  697. We have many

  698. in our church

  699. that are senders

  700. and we have many

  701. in our church

  702. that are goers.

  703. Let's come alongside

  704. them in whatever capacity

  705. that we can

  706. to serve the Lord.

  707. And don't undermine prayer.

  708. I think so often

  709. people feel,

  710. oh,

  711. well,

  712. I don't have

  713. enough money

  714. to give

  715. or I don't have

  716. the ability

  717. or the means

  718. or calling

  719. or whatever

  720. you want to call it

  721. to go over

  722. and do that work.

  723. Well,

  724. prayer is one

  725. of the primary

  726. motives in which

  727. the church has grown

  728. and you see it

  729. throughout Acts.

  730. And that's something

  731. you can do

  732. and it's free.

  733. Right?

  734. It's easy.

  735. Let's be in prayer

  736. about missions.

  737. Let's be in prayer

  738. for missionaries

  739. and prayer

  740. for the lost.

  741. Second application,

  742. let's take heart

  743. in knowing

  744. that nothing

  745. can thwart

  746. or stop

  747. God's plan

  748. of salvation

  749. and restoration.

  750. We do not have

  751. to worry about

  752. persecution,

  753. poor political

  754. candidates,

  755. or anything

  756. that might

  757. seemingly be

  758. in our way.

  759. Obviously,

  760. a lot of things

  761. are going on

  762. right now

  763. in our country

  764. and some good,

  765. some bad,

  766. and, you know,

  767. we all have

  768. our interpretations

  769. of them,

  770. but regardless

  771. of what's happening,

  772. regardless of how

  773. many conspiracy

  774. theories are true

  775. or this or that,

  776. it's irrelevant.

  777. It's not going

  778. to stop God.

  779. It's not going

  780. to thwart

  781. his plans to gather.

  782. It's not going

  783. to stop him

  784. from saving

  785. those whom he's

  786. called.

  787. And three,

  788. most importantly,

  789. and I think

  790. if we're doing

  791. the first two

  792. right,

  793. it results

  794. in doing

  795. this third

  796. one,

  797. we want

  798. to worship

  799. the Lord.

  800. We do this

  801. by obeying

  802. his word,

  803. by keeping

  804. justice,

  805. practicing

  806. righteousness,

  807. by being salt

  808. and light

  809. to the earth,

  810. a blessing

  811. to it

  812. and its

  813. peoples.

  814. We should

  815. be thankful

  816. as Gentiles,

  817. foreigners to

  818. Israel,

  819. that God

  820. has always

  821. planned to

  822. graft us

  823. into his

  824. salvific plan.

  825. let's express

  826. that thankfulness.

  827. We should be

  828. thankful that

  829. he is a just

  830. and righteous

  831. God who we

  832. can trust.

  833. And we are

  834. going to an

  835. eternal kingdom

  836. where there will

  837. be no injustice,

  838. oppression,

  839. wrongdoing,

  840. or any evil

  841. of any kind.

  842. We're not going

  843. to worry about

  844. voter fraud

  845. or any kind

  846. of other

  847. worldly thing.

  848. In everything

  849. we do,

  850. we are going

  851. to glorify God.

  852. Everything

  853. falls under

  854. that umbrella

  855. and there

  856. is no

  857. substitute

  858. for it.

  859. Without

  860. it,

  861. missions,

  862. salvation,

  863. and everything

  864. becomes meaningless.

  865. We are

  866. saved for the

  867. purpose of

  868. worship and

  869. we go on

  870. mission and

  871. support missions

  872. for the sake

  873. of gathering

  874. God's people

  875. on his holy

  876. hill for

  877. worship.

  878. So let's go

  879. to the Lord

  880. now in prayer

  881. and let's

  882. worship him.
