  1. Let me ask you to open up your word to Psalm 131.

  2. Psalm 131.

  3. Let me lead us in a prayer for the hearing of God's word.

  4. Father God, as we open up your word this morning,

  5. we recognize that we need your help to hear from it.

  6. And Father, we need to hear from you this morning.

  7. So Lord, we ask that you would work mightily by your spirit

  8. as I speak from your word and as your people hear it.

  9. And receive it.

  10. Father, help it to change us from one degree of glory to another.

  11. And we pray this in Christ's name and for his sake.

  12. Amen.

  13. All right.

  14. Psalm 131.

  15. Before I read it, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's word to us

  16. written for his glory and our good.

  17. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  18. and obey its commands.

  19. O Lord, my heart is not lifted up.

  20. My eyes are not raised too high.

  21. I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

  22. But I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with its mother,

  23. like a weaned child is my soul within me.

  24. O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore.

  25. There is much unknown about the date or occasion of the writing of this psalm.

  26. We do know, however, that David is its author and that he was a man of ambition.

  27. He was a king, a husband, a soldier, an administrator, and a poet.

  28. David was a busy man.

  29. He stabilized and built up a kingdom and he was troubled at every turn.

  30. He had ambition and a lot on his plate.

  31. But despite all of that, all that was going on in his life,

  32. in this world, this psalm gives us a glimpse into the soul of a man who is at rest.

  33. David was a man who had learned the secret of having a calm and quieted soul.

  34. Are you at rest this morning?

  35. Is your soul calmed and quieted within you today?

  36. Or do you find yourself in a state of stress or anxiety or worry?

  37. Is your soul, rather than being calm and quiet, rather noisy?

  38. What is the source of this noise?

  39. Our lives are full of many challenges.

  40. Our souls are encroached upon at every turn by some trouble.

  41. This past year, we have felt the need to become epidemiologists, economists, political theorists, and sociologists.

  42. We are unsure of what will come next, which tends toward a noisiness in our souls.

  43. I have felt this, despite all my encouragement to you over these past months.

  44. Many things can be blamed for us not being at rest, for our uncalmed and unquieted souls,

  45. for the noisiness that is within us, for our lack of peace.

  46. But the blame does not lie without, but David tells us, rather, that it lies within.

  47. In his closing comments to the Thessalonian church, Paul says in 2 Thessalonians 3, verse 16,

    2 Thessalonians 3:16

  48. Paul prays that God would provide peace, calmed and quieted souls at all times in every way.

  49. No matter the circumstances, no matter what is happening around you, inner calm and quiet is possible.

  50. So let's consider this matter together with three questions and the answers that David provides for us by the inspiration of God.

  51. And let us recognize that we have some work ahead of us.

  52. All of us have noisy souls at one time or another, and we may have experienced this in greater measure at the close of this year and the beginning of this coming year.

  53. Charles Spurgeon said in a commentary on Psalm 131,

  54. Psalm 131 is one of the shortest psalms to read, but one of the longest to learn.

  55. Let us be about that work this morning by asking the following three questions.

  56. Number one, why do we lack inner calm and quiet?

  57. Number two, how do we have inner calm and quiet?

  58. And number three, who is the source of inner calm and quiet?

  59. So question one, why do we lack inner calm and quiet?

  60. Let's not forget that we are looking into a moment of David's life in which he is at rest.

  61. In his writing, he is presently at rest.

  62. But if we take the positive statements of verse one and consider them in the negative,

  63. we can understand that the lack of inner calm and quiet comes from pride.

  64. Here's Psalm 131 in verse one in the negative, in the opposite, right?

  65. David's at rest.

  66. Let's hear what it would say if he was not at rest.

  67. God, I feel proud.

  68. I am looking to and desiring things that are beyond your intentions for me.

  69. I am occupied with matters outside of my control.

  70. When read this way, we can see that David's statements in verse one are against these ideas.

  71. He is not these things.

  72. But if he were, he would not have inner calm and quiet.

  73. If his life was characterized by pride in these ways, his soul would be in turmoil and it would be noisy.

  74. A life of self-exaltation and self-reliance and self-governance is not a life at rest because it takes on roles that are not ours to own.

  75. They are too big for us.

  76. And we should entrust our identity and our provision and our direction to the one who can handle such matters.

  77. We must know our place if we are to have inner calm and quiet.

  78. David addresses this peace-robbing pride in this psalm in all of its insidious forms and combats it at the levels of feeling, at appearing, and at acting.

  79. At the beginning of verse one, we see in his feeling he addresses it.

  80. Oh, Lord, my heart is not lifted up.

  81. The phrase my heart here meaning his inner being, his very core of who he is, his thoughts, his desires, his emotions.

  82. He did not think or feel too much of himself.

  83. A lack of inner calm and quiet can come from considering ourselves greater than we really are

  84. because deep down we know our shortcomings and putting on a show to protect others' perception of us is absolutely exhausting.

  85. We know deep down that we are not God.

  86. We know that we cannot know everything.

  87. And yet, we feel the pressure to act as if we can.

  88. I think it's a great scheme of the devil to take what many people call the fear of missing out.

  89. Everybody wanted to know which color the dress was online.

  90. You had to know or else you couldn't talk to other people about what was going on.

  91. All the things that go around on social media.

  92. And he's turned that into matters that are serious.

  93. We all feel the pressure to know exactly what we ought to think about any given thing.

  94. This past year has been full of opinions, hasn't it?

  95. How do we know?

  96. How should we navigate?

  97. It becomes this pressure to be able to answer all of the questions.

  98. And frankly, we can't.

  99. We just can't.

  100. I came across this quote by Eugene Peterson earlier this week.

  101. And it's specifically about preachers, but I hope you hear it in the application to all of us.

  102. He said, we are most of us Augustinians in our pulpits.

  103. High view of the sovereignty of God in all things.

  104. We preach the sovereignty of our Lord, the primacy of grace, the glory of God.

  105. But the minute we leave our pulpits, we become Pelagians.

  106. Pelagius argued for work salvation.

  107. Augustine and him had a great debate over this.

  108. In our committee meetings and planning sessions, in our obsessive attempts to meet the expectations of people,

  109. in our anxiety to please, in our hurry to cover all the bases,

  110. we practice a theology that puts moral effort as the primary element in pleasing God.

  111. And we have all been doing this this year.

  112. Saying on the one hand, our Lord is sovereign over all things,

  113. but acting as if we matter so much.

  114. We've done this in so very many ways.

  115. Recognize your feeling at the core of who you are,

  116. that there are things outside of your control.

  117. David also addresses this as it comes to appearance.

  118. He says, my eyes are not raised too high.

  119. This phrase is a reference to his countenance, to how he looks on the outside.

  120. If he were to look to the way he looks or to the things that make him look good,

  121. then he would not have inner calm and quiet.

  122. Contentment, true soul-satisfying contentment,

  123. never comes from without.

  124. Has nothing to do with the way we appear.

  125. Has everything to do with who our God is to us.

  126. And also, he says, in his acting, he says,

  127. I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

  128. Did David act?

  129. Of course he did.

  130. But he was not a listless man,

  131. but he did not act outside of his ordered purpose and sphere of control.

  132. The more I grow in maturity in Christ,

  133. the more I realize how very small my sphere of control really is.

  134. Has God granted to me responsibilities?

  135. Absolutely.

  136. Are there things I must do as a husband and a father and a pastor?

  137. Of course, right?

  138. There's too many things.

  139. I have so much to do, but I can't control any of it.

  140. My sphere is around my very feet.

  141. It's around my own attitude as I tackle the things that God has laid before me.

  142. A person who is always at work trying to control matters that they cannot control

  143. will not be at rest.

  144. You could do nothing about some things.

  145. We trouble ourselves with stuff that ought not trouble us.

  146. So pride, you see, robs us of inner calm and quiet.

  147. Not understanding and enjoying our place in the cosmos

  148. makes our souls noisy.

  149. John Calvin, I put this on your bulletin today.

  150. In Heart of Flame, speaking of this text, said,

  151. Those who, like David, submit themselves to God,

  152. keeping in their own sphere, moderate in their desires,

  153. will enjoy a life of tranquility and assurance.

  154. Doesn't that sound nice?

  155. Tranquility and assurance.

  156. This brings us to the second of our questions,

  157. which is,

  158. How do we have inner calm and quiet?

  159. We do not feel or appear or act in pride.

  160. We do not think too much of ourselves and respond accordingly.

  161. David says,

  162. Oh Lord, my heart is not lifted up.

  163. My eyes are not raised too high.

  164. I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.

  165. This is the way we humble ourselves.

  166. I am but a man created by a creator who reigns over all things.

  167. Paul writes to the Roman believers in the first part of Romans chapter 12 and verse 2,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  168. Do not be conformed to this world,

  169. but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

  170. As we think on the truth,

  171. we will feel the truth,

  172. be motivated by the truth,

  173. and act according to the truth.

  174. Too many of us are being discipled by our culture.

  175. Too many of us are spending way too much time on social media.

  176. Social media is an expression of the reality,

  177. but it is not the reality.

  178. There is a lot of stuff that happens online that doesn't happen person to person,

  179. face to face,

  180. and so much of it does not accord with the truth.

  181. The average college student spends two and a half hours a day on social media.

  182. I'd like for you to stop and think for a moment.

  183. How much time do you think you spend a day on social media,

  184. being discipled by the culture?

  185. There's helpful things out there.

  186. I'm not saying that there's not some reason to be on social media.

  187. There's helpful stuff.

  188. There's helpful people,

  189. resources that are good for us.

  190. How much time do you spend taking in garbage,

  191. things that don't make you humble,

  192. things that don't quiet your soul,

  193. but rather work you up into a frenzy?

  194. Turn on talk radio.

  195. You will find a channel that will upset you as you drive in your car.

  196. How much of that are you allowing to disciple you?

  197. What if instead you spent just a little bit of that time in God's word?

  198. Let God speak to your soul.

  199. I've done this math for you before,

  200. and I wouldn't expect that anybody would do this.

  201. I think it'd be unreasonable for anybody to do this,

  202. but if you took that time instead,

  203. two and a half hours a day,

  204. five days a week,

  205. 50 weeks out of the year,

  206. so I'm giving you some time to still be on social media,

  207. but if you instead read the Bible,

  208. average reading speed,

  209. instead,

  210. do you know how many times in a year you could read the scripture?

  211. Eight and a half times.

  212. Eight and a half times.

  213. John Piper famously said

  214. that the one thing that Facebook will accomplish for us

  215. at the end of all things

  216. is to show that we had time to pray,

  217. and I would say,

  218. and read our Bibles.

  219. What are you being discipled by?

  220. I will tell you,

  221. it is a stressful thing

  222. to be a pastor in our age,

  223. knowing that the sheep go out

  224. and spend countless hours

  225. being discipled by the culture,

  226. and I've got roughly a half an hour

  227. to preach a sermon on a Sunday morning.

  228. How could I possibly?

  229. The truth is I can't.

  230. It's not possible to speak to every fear you may have,

  231. every anxiety that comes up,

  232. everything that disquiets your soul.

  233. It's not possible.

  234. Sermons are important.

  235. They're not enough

  236. to be in the scripture

  237. all the time.

  238. In order to be at peace,

  239. we must think rightly.

  240. We must be transformed

  241. by the renewal of our minds,

  242. be able to take in the stuff

  243. that's going on around us

  244. and think biblically about it.

  245. David recognizes his place.

  246. That's what he expresses in this psalm.

  247. He knows his place.

  248. He combats pride

  249. and puts on humility

  250. through careful consideration

  251. of what God would have him be concerned with

  252. and what God would not have him be concerned with.

  253. Let me show you another text

  254. that speaks to this.

  255. I want you to keep yourself marked

  256. in Psalm 131.

  257. Turn with me to Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  258. I'm going to begin reading in verse 4.

  259. Singing strains my voice more than I realized.

  260. Beginning in verse 4.

  261. Paul writes,

  262. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  263. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  264. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  265. Pause for a second.

  266. Has reasonableness defined

  267. the Christian church in America

  268. this past year?

  269. I hope it's defined ours.

  270. I'm not so sure.

  271. Has it defined the American church

  272. as we can observe it, right?

  273. On social media?

  274. Gosh, no.

  275. No, it has not.

  276. Paul goes on to say,

  277. the last part of verse 5,

  278. The Lord is at hand.

  279. We are to reason,

  280. to know the truth

  281. and rightly express the truth

  282. that God is near.

  283. We have his very presence

  284. because of the sacrificial work

  285. of Jesus Christ.

  286. Verse 6.

  287. Do not be anxious about anything,

  288. but in everything,

  289. by prayer and supplication,

  290. with thanksgiving,

  291. let your requests be made known

  292. to God.

  293. This is written by Paul

  294. who is presently,

  295. when he's writing this letter,

  296. in a Roman prison.

  297. And the peace of God,

  298. which surpasses all understanding,

  299. will guard your hearts

  300. and your minds

  301. in Christ Jesus.

  302. Finally, brothers,

  303. whatever is true,

  304. whatever is honorable,

  305. whatever is just,

  306. whatever is pure,

  307. whatever is lovely,

  308. whatever is commendable,

  309. if there is any excellence,

  310. if there is anything worthy of praise,

  311. think about these things.

  312. What you have learned

  313. and received

  314. and heard

  315. and seen in me,

  316. practice these things

  317. and the God of peace

  318. will be with you.

  319. This is the life

  320. that we are meant

  321. to live

  322. in a trying time.

  323. And beloved,

  324. this is not trying

  325. compared to the times

  326. of trial

  327. that the church

  328. has experienced

  329. throughout the history

  330. of the church.

  331. I would say to you

  332. this morning,

  333. for a practical application,

  334. read the scripture.

  335. Read more and more

  336. and more of the scripture.

  337. Get a higher view of God

  338. and his sovereignty

  339. and his control

  340. of the world.

  341. As a second application,

  342. read a little bit

  343. of church history.

  344. Understand just a little

  345. what the church

  346. has endured

  347. throughout the ages

  348. and what much

  349. of the church

  350. endures today.

  351. This is light

  352. and momentary affliction

  353. compared to the light

  354. and momentary affliction

  355. of the church

  356. throughout time

  357. and space.

  358. All of the uncertainty,

  359. all of the challenge

  360. is really rather minor

  361. in comparison

  362. to what we see

  363. the church suffering.

  364. And all of this

  365. ought to give us

  366. a greater confidence

  367. in who our God is.

  368. This God of peace

  369. who will be with us.

  370. This God who is at hand,

  371. who is with us

  372. and who grants to us

  373. calmed and quieted souls.

  374. Look again at the result

  375. of David believing

  376. in the truth.

  377. Back in Psalm 131,

    Psalms 131:2

  378. verse 2,

  379. he says,

  380. But I have calmed

  381. and quieted my soul

  382. like a weaned child

  383. with its mother,

  384. like a weaned child

  385. is my soul within me.

  386. David uses a simile here

  387. to express the degree

  388. of his calm and quiet.

  389. John Piper,

  390. speaking of this text,

  391. says,

  392. This weaned child

  393. is a picture

  394. of contentment.

  395. The unweaned child

  396. is frantically rooting around

  397. and craves milk

  398. for his stomach.

  399. The weaned child

  400. is simply enjoying

  401. the way it feels

  402. to be in the lap

  403. of his mother.

  404. He is satisfied.

  405. And it is not

  406. about his stomach.

  407. It's about his heart.

  408. Piper's just saying

  409. the child is just happy

  410. to be held.

  411. It's not looking

  412. for anything

  413. from the mom

  414. except to be with

  415. the mom.

  416. Piper goes on to say,

  417. This is a picture

  418. of David's restfulness,

  419. contentment,

  420. satisfaction,

  421. joy,

  422. peace,

  423. and the secure,

  424. loving presence

  425. of God.

  426. End quote.

  427. David renounces

  428. self-exaltation

  429. and self-reliance

  430. and self-governance

  431. and trusts God

  432. with his identity

  433. and his provision

  434. and his direction.

  435. Which brings us

  436. to the final verse

  437. of this short psalm

  438. and our final question.

  439. Who is the source

  440. of inner calm

  441. and quiet?

  442. I know that I've

  443. answered the question.

  444. I hope you've answered it

  445. in your own mind already.

  446. David says

  447. in verse 3,

  448. O Israel,

  449. hope in the Lord

  450. from this time forth

  451. and forevermore.

  452. David,

  453. having experienced

  454. the inner calm

  455. and quiet

  456. that comes from God,

  457. calls the people of God

  458. to also hope in him.

  459. Here in David's appeal,

  460. a call to you.

  461. He calls Israel by name

  462. and if you have believed

  463. in Christ,

  464. he calls to you

  465. and he calls you

  466. to hope in the Lord.

  467. Psalm 131 is paired

  468. with Psalm 130,

  469. which is most likely

  470. also written by David

  471. and expresses trust

  472. in God's mercy.

  473. It is aimed at helping

  474. those who have trusted

  475. in Christ to see themselves

  476. as forgiven people,

  477. granted the right

  478. to enter God's presence

  479. because of his mercy.

  480. mercy.

  481. It finds its author

  482. in a state

  483. of restlessness

  484. but looking

  485. to God

  486. for rest.

  487. Let's read it,

  488. the eight verses,

  489. beginning in

  490. verse 1.

  491. out of the depths

  492. I cry to you,

  493. O Lord.

  494. O Lord,

  495. hear my voice.

  496. Let your ears

  497. be attentive

  498. to the voice

  499. of my pleas

  500. for mercy.

  501. If you, O Lord,

  502. should mark iniquities,

  503. O Lord,

  504. who could stand?

  505. But with you

  506. there is forgiveness

  507. that you may be feared.

  508. I wait for the Lord.

  509. My soul waits

  510. and in his word

  511. I hope.

  512. My soul waits

  513. for the Lord

  514. more than watchmen

  515. for the morning,

  516. more than watchmen

  517. for the morning.

  518. O Israel,

  519. hope in the Lord.

  520. For with the Lord

  521. there is steadfast love

  522. and with him

  523. is plentiful redemption.

  524. And he will redeem Israel

  525. from all his iniquities.

  526. So in times of trouble,

  527. when our souls

  528. are not calmed

  529. and are not quieted,

  530. we can look to the God

  531. of our salvation

  532. and hope in him.

  533. We can be humbled

  534. by his great mercy

  535. toward us.

  536. We can trust God

  537. with our identity

  538. and our provision

  539. and our direction.

  540. We can know

  541. that God is for us

  542. because we are his people

  543. and because we have peace

  544. with him.

  545. that tumult

  546. that existed

  547. before we were in Christ

  548. no longer exists

  549. and therefore

  550. we can be calmed

  551. and quieted.

  552. Recall the words

  553. of Jesus

  554. from Matthew chapter 11

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  555. that I read

  556. previously

  557. beginning in verse 28.

  558. Jesus says,

  559. Come to me

  560. all who labor

  561. and are heavy laden

  562. and I will give you rest.

  563. Take my yoke upon you

  564. and learn from you

  565. for I am gentle

  566. and lowly in heart

  567. and you will find rest

  568. for your souls

  569. for my yoke is easy

  570. and my burden

  571. is light.

  572. So are you at rest

  573. this morning?

  574. Is your soul

  575. calmed and quieted

  576. within you today

  577. or do you find yourself

  578. in a state of stress

  579. or anxiety

  580. or worry?

  581. Is your soul

  582. noisy

  583. this morning?

  584. We, I think,

  585. have some work to do

  586. in this area.

  587. Some meditation to do

  588. on these good promises

  589. of God to us.

  590. Taking up

  591. and reading his word

  592. and understanding

  593. that he is a God

  594. that we can

  595. hope in

  596. from this time forth

  597. and forevermore.

  598. We ought to be

  599. an unshakable people

  600. and immovable people

  601. because we have

  602. a confidence

  603. in such

  604. a great God.

  605. So I hope

  606. that you can join

  607. with me

  608. in saying,

  609. O Lord,

  610. my heart is not

  611. lifted up.

  612. My eyes are not

  613. raised too high.

  614. I do not occupy

  615. myself with things

  616. too great

  617. and too marvelous

  618. for me.

  619. But I have calmed

  620. and quieted my soul

  621. like a weaned child

  622. with its mother,

  623. like a weaned child

  624. is my soul

  625. within me.

  626. O Israel,

  627. hope in the Lord

  628. from this time forth

  629. and forevermore.

  630. Let's pray together.

  631. Let's pray together.
