  1. Well, 2021 has been a year already full of oddities of various kinds.

  2. ! We've had a lot of folks in our church sick and out.

  3. We've had a lot of musicians out.

  4. I'm thankful for the plethora of musicians that we do have that can help and fill in.

  5. We found ourselves the first Sunday of the year with me leading us a cappella,

  6. which was the strangest of oddities this year.

  7. We've had a lot of our regular folks out, unable to be with us.

  8. And then as a wonderful oddity, we've had a lot of guests here with us.

  9. For some time now, we've been preaching expositional sermons from various texts

  10. throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, which is an oddity for us.

  11. Because our habit for the past 12 years has been to preach verse-by-verse expositional sermons

  12. through a book of the Bible.

  13. Well, typically a New Testament book than an Old Testament book and back and forth like that.

  14. And so, it's with great joy that I'll ask you to turn with me this morning to Paul's letter to the Philippians

  15. as we begin, once again and Lord willing, a 15-week exposition of this wonderful book.

  16. Our plan is, across the next 15 weeks, to walk ourselves through Paul's letter to the Philippians.

  17. As a very brief reminder to you, we purchase and have handy these ESV scripture journals.

  18. I just want to make one more little pitch to you.

  19. They're extremely helpful for me in my study.

  20. I use them to read through the entire letter, in this case, and make notes off on the note page and mark it up.

  21. I'm not marking in my Bible any longer because it gets terribly messy, but I'm doing that.

  22. If you would like one of these, they're actually back on the rail of the sound booth.

  23. They're just five bucks.

  24. You can owe us.

  25. So, if you want to run back there and grab one, no one here will mind if you do that.

  26. There's a little stack of them back there for you if you'd like to follow along and keep notes in that way.

  27. You can also find them all over the internet.

  28. You can purchase them if you'd like to do that as well.

  29. Our text for this morning will be Philippians chapter 1, verses 1 and 2.

    Philippians 1:1

  30. And I do promise that we're going to spend some time with these two verses, but I would first like to do two things.

  31. Number one, I'm going to give you seven reasons that Christians should study the book of Philippians,

  32. which should give us some bearing on the themes of this letter.

  33. And secondly, we will read the entirety of Paul's address to the Philippian believers as this would have been his intent in its writing.

  34. It is the way that the Philippian believers would have first heard it,

  35. and doing so should help us think about its thematic content.

  36. It'll take about 10 to 12 minutes to do that together.

  37. So, because we have some ground to cover, let's get right into it.

  38. And first, consider seven reasons Christians should study the book of Philippians.

  39. Number one, Philippians is a purposely relational book.

  40. It's a purposely relational book.

  41. God intends for us to be in relationship with one another.

  42. We are meant to be saved to a people.

  43. We need each other.

  44. And in a culture where relationship is being fractured, right?

  45. We have a sense of knowing more people than we've ever known before,

  46. but yet know fewer people deeply as we should.

  47. It's good for us to consider the relational nature of this book.

  48. But these are not unaimed relationships.

  49. These are not relationships for the sake of relationship,

  50. but they are aimed.

  51. These relationships are to be for the magnification of the gospel to the glory of God.

  52. I'll show you two examples.

  53. Philippians chapter 4 and verse 1.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  54. Paul writes,

  55. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for,

  56. my joy and crown,

  57. stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.

  58. Just a single verse packed full of Paul's affection for these Christians.

  59. His brothers.

  60. He loves them and he longs for them.

  61. He calls them his joy and his crown.

  62. And then finally, his beloved in that single verse.

  63. Then in Philippians chapter 1 and verse 27,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  64. another example of an exhortation toward relationship.

  65. Paul writes,

  66. These things being of one spirit and one mind,

  67. striving together, side by side,

  68. does not happen without purposeful relationship.

  69. Second reason,

  70. Philippians is a gospel-oriented book.

  71. This is always a good thing,

  72. and this is true of the scripture in totality.

  73. While this letter does not contain an explicit gospel presentation,

  74. it does contain much gospel application.

  75. Paul makes mention of the gospel repeatedly in chapter 1

  76. and on occasion in chapters 2 and chapter 4.

  77. Philippians chapter 1 and verse 5,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  78. verse 7,

  79. verse 12,

  80. verse 16,

  81. and verse 27.

  82. He mentions the gospel in each of those verses.

  83. And then chapter 2 and verse 22,

  84. chapter 5,

  85. excuse me,

  86. chapter 4,

  87. verse 3,

  88. and verse 15.

  89. We will not be able to wade into the waters of Philippians

  90. without making the gospel abundantly clear.

  91. Otherwise,

  92. the letter would make no sense.

  93. As we strive together to work out all of those applications,

  94. we're going to have to,

  95. again and again and again,

  96. make the gospel abundantly clear.

  97. It will be foundational to our understanding of Philippians

  98. to know that apart from the saving work of Jesus Christ,

  99. we are enemies of God and deserve his just punishment.

  100. But by grace alone,

  101. through faith alone,

  102. in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone,

  103. we can be granted the salvation of our souls.

  104. So Philippians is a gospel-oriented book.

  105. Third,

  106. Philippians is a doctrinally rich book.

  107. We discover in Philippians great theological truths, right?

  108. In its few verses,

  109. it is just packed full.

  110. Let me give you two quick examples.

  111. We see the incarnation of Christ

  112. for the purpose of propitiation.

  113. Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2:6

  114. verse 6 and following.

  115. Who,

  116. though he was in the form of God,

  117. did not account equality with God,

  118. a thing to be grasped,

  119. but emptied himself

  120. by taking the form of a servant,

  121. being born in the likeness of men.

  122. And being found in human form,

  123. he humbled himself

  124. by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  125. even death on a cross.

  126. It is going to be a joy

  127. to unpack these verses together.

  128. We also see the exaltation of Christ

  129. to the right hand of God.

  130. There in Philippians 2,

    Philippians 2:9

  131. verse 9 and following.

  132. Therefore,

  133. God has highly exalted him

  134. and bestowed on him the name

  135. that is above every name.

  136. So that the name of Jesus,

  137. every knee should bow in heaven

  138. and on earth and under the earth,

  139. and every tongue confess

  140. that Jesus Christ is Lord

  141. to the glory of God the Father.

  142. We're going to have such opportunity

  143. to discover and explore

  144. many other grand theological truths

  145. as we study Philippians together.

  146. Fourth,

  147. Philippians is a prayer-producing book.

  148. If we learn from the example of Paul,

  149. our prayer lives will be deepened

  150. as we study Philippians.

  151. Paul expresses heartfelt prayer

  152. for the Philippian believers

  153. in chapter 1, verses 3 through 11.

  154. Just a sampling of that,

  155. beginning in verse 3.

  156. I thank my God

  157. in all my remembrance of you,

  158. always in every prayer of mine for you,

  159. all making my prayer with joy

  160. because of your partnership in the gospel

  161. from the first day until now.

  162. And he encourages the Philippians to pray

  163. if they are to avoid anxiety

  164. and experience peace.

  165. Philippians chapter 4, verses 6 and 7.

    Philippians 4:6

  166. Do not be anxious about anything,

  167. but in everything,

  168. by prayer and supplication,

  169. with thanksgiving,

  170. let your requests be made known to God.

  171. And the peace of God,

  172. which surpasses all understanding,

  173. will guard your hearts and your minds

  174. in Christ Jesus.

  175. Paul, rightly,

  176. is going to be encouraging us

  177. to pray

  178. as we study the book of Philippians.

  179. Fifth,

  180. Philippians is a holiness-growing book.

  181. This letter has much to say

  182. about how we are to live

  183. the Christian life.

  184. It speaks to the part

  185. that we play in our growth in holiness,

  186. and it reminds us

  187. of the part that God plays,

  188. the prominent part that God plays.

  189. Just as an example,

  190. Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  191. beginning verse 12,

  192. Therefore, my beloved,

  193. as you have always obeyed,

  194. so now,

  195. not only as in my presence,

  196. but much more in my absence,

  197. work out your own salvation

  198. with fear and trembling.

  199. For it is God who works in you,

  200. both to will and to work

  201. for his good pleasure.

  202. Sixth,

  203. Philippians is an eternity-gazing book.

  204. book.

  205. Christians need to think more

  206. on eternity.

  207. We think far too much

  208. about the present state of things.

  209. We need to think much more

  210. about the eternal state of things.

  211. We need to have our minds drawn

  212. to the world to come

  213. to give us hope

  214. for today.

  215. Again,

  216. Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  217. here's verse 20 and 21.

  218. Paul says,

  219. But our citizenship

  220. is in heaven,

  221. and from it we await

  222. a Savior,

  223. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  224. who will transform

  225. our lowly body

  226. to be like

  227. his glorious body

  228. by the power

  229. that enables him

  230. even

  231. to subject

  232. all things

  233. to himself.

  234. That ought to just

  235. birth hope in you

  236. thinking about it.

  237. And lastly,

  238. Philippians

  239. is a joy-producing

  240. book.

  241. We see the theme

  242. of joy

  243. repeated in this work

  244. more than any other,

  245. and we live in a moment

  246. where many Christians

  247. are learning,

  248. many for the very first time,

  249. what it means

  250. to fight

  251. for joy.

  252. Joy has just come

  253. easy and natural

  254. as we've lived

  255. a life of ease,

  256. but many Christians

  257. now are finding

  258. their world

  259. upset

  260. and rocked

  261. for all sorts

  262. of reasons

  263. and are having

  264. to learn what it means.

  265. How is it that we have

  266. an abiding joy

  267. that's rooted in

  268. an unchangeable

  269. Christ?

  270. This will be good

  271. and instructive

  272. for us.

  273. And you see this theme

  274. over and over again.

  275. Chapter 1

  276. and verse 4,

  277. verse 18,

  278. verse 25,

  279. chapter 2 and verse 2,

  280. verses 17 and 18,

  281. 28 and 29,

  282. chapter 3 and verse 1

  283. and chapter 4

  284. and verse 10.

  285. We see this idea

  286. of joy and rejoicing

  287. over and over

  288. and over.

  289. One example

  290. to read out loud to you,

  291. Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  292. and verse 4.

  293. Paul exhorts

  294. them

  295. and us

  296. to rejoice

  297. in the Lord

  298. always.

  299. Again,

  300. I will say

  301. rejoice.

  302. Not based on

  303. your circumstances,

  304. right?

  305. Not rejoice in the Lord

  306. when it's easy

  307. to rejoice,

  308. but rejoice

  309. in the Lord

  310. always.

  311. Again,

  312. I will say

  313. rejoice.

  314. So,

  315. I hope

  316. that sets up

  317. a framework for you,

  318. a platform

  319. for you to go,

  320. man,

  321. this is going

  322. to be good.

  323. I hope you're eager,

  324. expectant,

  325. looking forward to

  326. our time together

  327. in this

  328. short letter.

  329. So,

  330. I'm going to read it now.

  331. I'm going to read

  332. the letter

  333. as I guess

  334. I would imagine.

  335. Of course,

  336. it would have been

  337. read in Greek,

  338. not in English,

  339. but as it would have

  340. been opened

  341. to a church,

  342. right?

  343. It would have been

  344. received.

  345. And if you could

  346. just imagine

  347. for a moment

  348. what that would

  349. have been like,

  350. right?

  351. The Apostle Paul,

  352. right?

  353. The man who came

  354. and preached the gospel

  355. in this city

  356. and started this church

  357. is now,

  358. many years later,

  359. writing back

  360. to this church,

  361. this church that's been

  362. in partnership

  363. with him financially

  364. in his mission efforts.

  365. in the world

  366. and he writes to them

  367. a letter.

  368. One of their elders

  369. announces to them

  370. that they've received

  371. this letter

  372. and opens it up

  373. and reads it.

  374. Before I read it,

  375. I want to remind you,

  376. beloved,

  377. that this is God's word

  378. to us,

  379. written for his glory

  380. and our good.

  381. We would all do well

  382. to listen to it

  383. in order to believe

  384. its promises

  385. and obey

  386. its commands.

  387. So,

  388. chapter 1,

  389. beginning in verse 1.

  390. Paul and Timothy,

  391. servants,

  392. of Christ Jesus,

  393. to all the saints

  394. in Christ Jesus

  395. who are at Philippi

  396. with the overseers

  397. and deacons,

  398. grace to you

  399. and peace

  400. from God our Father

  401. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  402. I thank my God

  403. in all my remembrance

  404. of you,

  405. always in every prayer

  406. of mine for you,

  407. all making my prayer

  408. with joy

  409. because of your partnership

  410. in the gospel

  411. from the first day

  412. until now.

  413. And I am sure of this,

  414. that he who began

  415. a good work in you

  416. will bring it to completion

  417. at the day

  418. of Jesus Christ.

  419. It is right for me

  420. to feel this way

  421. about you all

  422. because I told you

  423. in my heart

  424. for you are all

  425. partakers with me

  426. of grace.

  427. I hold you in my heart

  428. because you are all

  429. partakers with me

  430. of grace

  431. both in my imprisonment

  432. and in the defense

  433. and confirmation

  434. of the gospel.

  435. For God is my witness

  436. how I yearn for you all

  437. with the affection

  438. of Christ Jesus.

  439. And it is my prayer

  440. that your love

  441. may abound more

  442. and more

  443. with knowledge

  444. and all discernment

  445. so that you may approve

  446. what is excellent

  447. and so be pure

  448. and brainless

  449. for the day

  450. of Christ.

  451. filled with the fruit

  452. of righteousness

  453. that comes

  454. through Jesus Christ

  455. to the glory

  456. and praise of God.

  457. I want you to know

  458. brothers that what

  459. has happened to me

  460. has really served

  461. to advance the gospel

  462. so that it has become

  463. known throughout

  464. the whole imperial guard

  465. and to all the rest

  466. that my imprisonment

  467. is for Christ.

  468. And most of the brothers

  469. having become confident

  470. in the Lord

  471. by my imprisonment

  472. are much more bold

  473. to speak the word

  474. without fear.

  475. Some indeed

  476. preach Christ

  477. from envy

  478. and rivalry

  479. but others

  480. from good will.

  481. the latter do it

  482. out of love

  483. knowing that I am

  484. put here

  485. for the defense

  486. of the gospel.

  487. The former

  488. proclaim Christ

  489. out of selfish ambition

  490. not sincerely

  491. but thinking

  492. to afflict me

  493. in my imprisonment.

  494. What then?

  495. Only that in every way

  496. whether in pretense

  497. or in truth

  498. Christ is proclaimed

  499. and in that

  500. I rejoice.

  501. Yes

  502. and I will rejoice

  503. for I know

  504. that through your prayers

  505. and the help

  506. of the spirit

  507. of Jesus Christ

  508. this will turn out

  509. for my deliverance

  510. as it is my eager

  511. expectation and hope

  512. that I will not be

  513. at all ashamed

  514. but that will

  515. with full courage

  516. now as always

  517. Christ will be honored

  518. in my body

  519. whether by life

  520. or by death.

  521. For to me

  522. to live is Christ

  523. and to die is gain.

  524. If I am to live

  525. in the flesh

  526. that means fruitful labor

  527. for me

  528. yet which shall I choose

  529. I cannot tell.

  530. I am hard pressed

  531. between the two.

  532. My desire is to depart

  533. and be with Christ

  534. for that is far better.

  535. But to remain

  536. in the flesh

  537. is more necessary

  538. on your account.

  539. Convinced of this

  540. I know that I will remain

  541. and continue with you all

  542. for your progress

  543. and joy in the faith

  544. so that in me

  545. you may have ample cause

  546. to glory in Christ Jesus

  547. because of my coming

  548. to you again.

  549. Only let your manner

  550. of life be worthy

  551. of the gospel of Christ

  552. so that whether I come

  553. and see you

  554. or am absent

  555. I may hear of you

  556. that you are standing

  557. firm in one spirit

  558. with one mind

  559. striving side by side

  560. for the faith

  561. of the gospel

  562. and not frightened

  563. in anything

  564. by your opponents.

  565. This is a clear sign

  566. to them of their destruction

  567. but of your salvation

  568. and that from God.

  569. For it has been granted

  570. to you that for the sake

  571. of Christ

  572. you should not only

  573. believe in him

  574. but also suffer

  575. for his sake.

  576. Engage in the same conflict

  577. that you saw I had

  578. and now hear

  579. that I still have.

  580. So if there is any

  581. encouragement in Christ

  582. any comfort from love

  583. any participation

  584. in the spirit

  585. any affection

  586. and sympathy

  587. complete my joy

  588. by being of the same mind

  589. having the same love

  590. being in full accord

  591. and of one mind.

  592. Do nothing from

  593. selfish ambition

  594. or conceit

  595. but in humility

  596. count others

  597. more significant

  598. than yourselves.

  599. Let each of you

  600. look not only

  601. to his own interest

  602. but also to the

  603. interests of others.

  604. Have this mind

  605. among yourself

  606. which is yours

  607. in Christ Jesus

  608. who though he was

  609. in the form of God

  610. did not account

  611. equality with God

  612. a thing to be grasped

  613. but emptied himself

  614. by taking the form

  615. of a servant

  616. being born

  617. in the likeness

  618. of men

  619. and being found

  620. in human form

  621. he humbled himself

  622. by becoming obedient

  623. to the point of death

  624. even death

  625. on a cross.

  626. Therefore God

  627. has highly exalted him

  628. and bestowed on him

  629. the name that is above

  630. every name

  631. so the name of Jesus

  632. every knee should bow

  633. in heaven and on earth

  634. and under the earth

  635. and every tongue

  636. confess that Jesus Christ

  637. is Lord

  638. to the glory of God

  639. the Father.

  640. Therefore my beloved

  641. as you have always obeyed

  642. so now not only

  643. in my presence

  644. but much more

  645. in my absence

  646. work out your own salvation

  647. with fear

  648. and trembling

  649. for it is God

  650. who works in you

  651. both to will

  652. and to work

  653. for his good pleasure.

  654. Do all things

  655. without grumbling

  656. or disputing

  657. that you may be

  658. blameless and innocent

  659. children of God

  660. without blemish

  661. in the midst

  662. of a crooked

  663. and twisted generation

  664. among whom you shine

  665. as lights in the world

  666. holding fast

  667. to the word of life

  668. so that in a day

  669. of Christ

  670. I may be proud

  671. that I did not run

  672. in vain

  673. or labor in vain

  674. even if I am

  675. to be poured out

  676. as a drink offering

  677. upon the sacrificial

  678. offering of your faith

  679. I am glad

  680. and rejoice

  681. with you all

  682. likewise

  683. you also

  684. should be glad

  685. and rejoice

  686. with me

  687. I hope in the Lord Jesus

  688. to send Timothy

  689. to you soon

  690. so that I too

  691. may be cheered

  692. by news of you

  693. for I have no one

  694. like him

  695. who will be genuinely

  696. concerned for your welfare

  697. for they all seek

  698. their own interests

  699. not those

  700. of Jesus Christ

  701. but you know

  702. Timothy's proven worth

  703. how as a son

  704. with a father

  705. he has served me

  706. in the gospel

  707. I hope therefore

  708. to send him

  709. just as soon

  710. as I see

  711. how it will go

  712. with me

  713. and I trust

  714. in the Lord

  715. that shortly

  716. I myself

  717. will come also

  718. I have thought

  719. it necessary

  720. to send to you

  721. Epaphroditus

  722. my brother

  723. and fellow worker

  724. and fellow soldier

  725. and your messenger

  726. and minister

  727. to my need

  728. for he has been

  729. longing for you all

  730. and has been distressed

  731. because you heard

  732. that he was ill

  733. indeed he was ill

  734. near to death

  735. but God had mercy

  736. on him

  737. and not only

  738. on him

  739. but on me also

  740. lest I should

  741. have sorrow

  742. upon sorrow

  743. I am the more

  744. eager to send him

  745. therefore

  746. that you may rejoice

  747. at seeing him again

  748. and that I may be

  749. less anxious

  750. so receive him

  751. the Lord

  752. with all joy

  753. and honor such men

  754. for he nearly died

  755. for the work of Christ

  756. risking his life

  757. to complete

  758. what was lacking

  759. in your service

  760. to me

  761. finally my brothers

  762. rejoice in the Lord

  763. to write the same thing

  764. to you

  765. as no trouble to me

  766. and it is safe for you

  767. look out for the dogs

  768. look out for the evildoers

  769. look out for those

  770. who mutilate the flesh

  771. for we are the circumcision

  772. who worship by the spirit of God

  773. and glory in Christ Jesus

  774. and put no confidence

  775. in the flesh

  776. though I myself

  777. have reason for confidence

  778. in the flesh also

  779. if anyone else thinks

  780. he has reason for confidence

  781. in the flesh

  782. I have more

  783. circumcised on the eighth day

  784. of the people of Israel

  785. of the tribe of Benjamin

  786. a Hebrew of Hebrews

  787. as to the law

  788. a Pharisee

  789. as to zeal

  790. a persecutor of the church

  791. as to righteousness

  792. under the law

  793. blameless

  794. but whatever gain I had

  795. I counted as loss

  796. for the sake of Christ

  797. indeed I count everything

  798. as loss

  799. because of the surpassing worth

  800. of knowing Christ Jesus

  801. my Lord

  802. for his sake

  803. I have suffered the loss

  804. of all things

  805. and count them as rubbish

  806. in order that I may gain Christ

  807. and be found in him

  808. not having a righteousness

  809. of my own

  810. that comes from the law

  811. but that which comes

  812. through faith in Christ

  813. the righteousness from God

  814. that depends on faith

  815. that I may know him

  816. and the power of his resurrection

  817. and may share his sufferings

  818. becoming like him

  819. in his death

  820. that by any means possible

  821. I may attain

  822. the resurrection

  823. from the dead

  824. not that I have already

  825. obtained this

  826. or am already perfect

  827. but I press on

  828. to make it my own

  829. because Christ Jesus

  830. had made me his own

  831. brothers

  832. I do not consider

  833. that I have made it my own

  834. but one thing I do

  835. forgetting what lies behind

  836. and straining forward

  837. to what lies ahead

  838. I press on toward the goal

  839. for the prize

  840. of the upward call of God

  841. in Christ Jesus

  842. let those of us

  843. who are mature

  844. think this way

  845. and if anything

  846. you think otherwise

  847. God will reveal that

  848. also to you

  849. only let us hold true

  850. to what we have attained

  851. brothers

  852. join in imitating me

  853. and keep your eyes

  854. on those who walk

  855. according to the example

  856. you have in us

  857. for many of whom

  858. I have often told you

  859. and now tell you

  860. even with tears

  861. walk as enemies

  862. of the cross of Christ

  863. their end is destruction

  864. their God is their belly

  865. and they glory

  866. in their shame

  867. with minds set

  868. on earthly things

  869. but our citizenship

  870. is in heaven

  871. and from it

  872. we await a savior

  873. the Lord Jesus Christ

  874. who will transform

  875. our lowly body

  876. to be like his glorious body

  877. by the power

  878. that enables him

  879. even to subject

  880. all things

  881. to himself

  882. therefore my brothers

  883. whom I love

  884. and long for

  885. my joy and crowned

  886. stand firm thus

  887. in the Lord

  888. my beloved

  889. I entreat

  890. Yodia

  891. and I entreat

  892. Cintiq

  893. to agree in the Lord

  894. yes I also ask you

  895. true companion

  896. help these women

  897. who have labored

  898. side by side

  899. with me

  900. in the gospel

  901. together with

  902. the Clement

  903. and the rest

  904. of my fellow workers

  905. whose names

  906. are in the book

  907. of life

  908. rejoice in the Lord

  909. always

  910. again I will say

  911. rejoice

  912. let your reasonableness

  913. be known to everyone

  914. the Lord

  915. is at hand

  916. do not be anxious

  917. about anything

  918. but in everything

  919. by prayer

  920. and supplication

  921. with thanksgiving

  922. let your request

  923. be made known

  924. to God

  925. and the peace

  926. of God

  927. which surpasses

  928. all understanding

  929. will guard your hearts

  930. and your minds

  931. in Christ Jesus

  932. finally brothers

  933. whatever is true

  934. whatever is honorable

  935. whatever is just

  936. whatever is pure

  937. whatever is lovely

  938. whatever is commendable

  939. there is any

  940. sorry

  941. if there is any

  942. excellence

  943. if there is anything

  944. worthy of praise

  945. think about these things

  946. what you have learned

  947. and received

  948. and heard

  949. and seen in me

  950. practice these things

  951. and the God of peace

  952. will be with you

  953. I rejoice

  954. the Lord greatly

  955. that now at length

  956. you have revived

  957. your concern for me

  958. you were indeed

  959. concerned for me

  960. but you had no opportunity

  961. not that I am speaking

  962. of being in need

  963. for I have learned

  964. in whatever situation

  965. I am

  966. to be content

  967. I know how to be brought low

  968. and I know how to abound

  969. in any and every circumstance

  970. I have learned

  971. the secret

  972. of facing plenty

  973. and hunger

  974. abundance

  975. and need

  976. I can do all things

  977. through him

  978. who strengthens me

  979. that it was kind of you

  980. to share my trouble

  981. and you Philippians

  982. yourselves know

  983. that in the beginning

  984. of the gospel

  985. when I left Macedonia

  986. no church entered

  987. an apartage with me

  988. in giving and receiving

  989. except you only

  990. even at Thessalonica

  991. you sent me help

  992. for my needs

  993. once and again

  994. not that I seek

  995. the gift

  996. but I seek the fruit

  997. that increases

  998. to your credit

  999. I have received

  1000. full payment

  1001. and more

  1002. I am well supplied

  1003. having received

  1004. from Epaphroditus

  1005. the gifts you sent

  1006. a fragrant offering

  1007. a sacrifice

  1008. acceptable and pleasing

  1009. to God

  1010. and my God

  1011. will supply

  1012. every need of yours

  1013. according to his riches

  1014. in glory

  1015. in Christ Jesus

1016. to our God and Father

  1017. be glory

  1018. forever and ever

  1019. amen

  1020. greet every saint

  1021. in Christ Jesus

1022. the brothers who are with me

  1023. greet you

1024. all the saints greet you

  1025. especially those

  1026. of Caesar's household

1027. the grace of the Lord

  1028. Jesus Christ

  1029. be with your spirit

  1030. and then I imagine

  1031. that the Philippian believers

  1032. spent much more

  1033. than 15 weeks

  1034. trying to understand

  1035. everything that Paul

  1036. was trying to say

  1037. to them

  1038. in that time

  1039. so that's the work

  1040. that we'll be about

1041. and we're going to begin

  1042. this morning

  1043. with the first

  1044. two verses

  1045. and I hope that we're

  1046. setting us up

1047. for the rest of our study

  1048. to be fruitful

  1049. so verse

  1050. one

  1051. and two

  1052. in order to look

  1053. briefly at these

  1054. two verses

  1055. I want to draw

  1056. your attention

  1057. to two

  1058. titles

  1059. first

  1060. Paul refers

  1061. to himself

  1062. and his compatriot

  1063. Timothy

  1064. as servants

  1065. of Christ Jesus

  1066. some of your

  1067. translations

  1068. may say

  1069. bond servants

  1070. which I applaud

  1071. this is a wonderful

  1072. way to translate

  1073. that Greek word

  1074. the Greek word

  1075. doulos

  1076. this signified

  1077. a person

  1078. who was owned

  1079. by someone else

  1080. and was entirely

  1081. dependent

  1082. on their owner

  1083. for their livelihood

  1084. a doulos

  1085. was different

  1086. than someone

  1087. who served

  1088. as a servant

  1089. in a household

  1090. who would have

  1091. a household

  1092. of their own

  1093. who would come

  1094. and do work

  1095. and then go

  1096. home to their home

  1097. not a particular

  1098. task that they

  1099. accomplished

  1100. a doulos

  1101. a bond servant

  1102. had no ownership

  1103. of their own

  1104. they were entirely

  1105. owned

  1106. by their master

  1107. and anything

  1108. that they got

  1109. for their own

  1110. livelihood

  1111. came from

  1112. their master

  1113. in many of Paul's

  1114. other writing

  1115. he will remind

  1116. his readers

  1117. of his

  1118. apostolic standing

  1119. he starts out

  1120. as declaring

  1121. that he is

  1122. an apostle

  1123. but he sees

  1124. no need

  1125. to do so

  1126. here

  1127. the Philippian

  1128. believers do not

  1129. seem to need

  1130. a reminder

  1131. of Paul's

  1132. leadership status

  1133. amongst the church

  1134. but he does

  1135. see fit

  1136. to remind them

  1137. of his

  1138. subservient

  1139. status

  1140. to the Lord

  1141. Jesus Christ

  1142. he is reminding

  1143. them that the

  1144. Christian goes

  1145. and does

  1146. and says

  1147. what he is

  1148. commanded

  1149. by God

  1150. and that every

  1151. ounce of our

  1152. being is derived

  1153. from him

  1154. he introduces

  1155. Timothy in the

  1156. same way as he

  1157. is commending

  1158. Timothy to them

  1159. he is hoping

  1160. to send

  1161. Timothy

  1162. to them

  1163. we see that

  1164. in chapter 2

  1165. in verse 19

  1166. it is contextually

  1167. important to note

  1168. at the outset

  1169. of our study

  1170. of this letter

  1171. that it was

  1172. written

  1173. from a Roman

  1174. prison

  1175. this is mentioned

  1176. there in

  1177. chapter 1

  1178. it was most likely

  1179. delivered in the

  1180. early 60s

  1181. somewhere around

  1182. 62

  1183. Paul's bond

  1184. service to

  1185. Christ Jesus

  1186. found him

  1187. jailed

  1188. and

  1189. we will make

  1190. mention of this

  1191. often as we

  1192. explore the

  1193. themes

  1194. of this book

  1195. remember the

  1196. prominent theme

  1197. of joy

  1198. Paul does not

  1199. find himself

  1200. in a condition

  1201. that any of us

  1202. would wish

  1203. on ourselves

  1204. and yet

  1205. this prominent

  1206. theme emerges

  1207. again and

  1208. again and

  1209. again

  1210. beloved

  1211. Jesus has not

  1212. asked for us

  1213. to be admirers

  1214. he has asked

  1215. for us to be

  1216. followers

  1217. I wonder how

  1218. many of us

  1219. are as keenly

  1220. aware as we

  1221. should be

  1222. of the

  1223. reality

  1224. that we

  1225. are in

  1226. Christ

  1227. and that we

  1228. belong to

  1229. him and we

  1230. depend on

  1231. him entirely

  1232. for our

  1233. livelihood

  1234. I wonder

  1235. how our

  1236. lives

  1237. how the

  1238. culture of

  1239. our church

  1240. and how

  1241. our broader

  1242. community

  1243. might look

  1244. different

  1245. if we also

  1246. consider ourselves

  1247. bond servants

  1248. of Christ

  1249. Jesus

  1250. doing everything

  1251. at the will

  1252. of his

  1253. command

  1254. recognizing

  1255. that we

  1256. receive

  1257. everything

  1258. by his

  1259. good pleasure

  1260. so this is the

  1261. first title I

  1262. wanted us to

  1263. note this

  1264. morning

  1265. second

  1266. Paul addresses

  1267. the letter

  1268. to all the

  1269. saints

  1270. in Christ

  1271. Jesus

  1272. who are

  1273. at Philippi

  1274. with the

  1275. overseers

  1276. and the

  1277. deacons

  1278. notice first

  1279. that while

  1280. Paul

  1281. recognizes

  1282. that the

  1283. church at

  1284. Philippi

  1285. was properly

  1286. ordered

  1287. with the

  1288. biblical

  1289. offices

  1290. of

  1291. overseers

  1292. or elders

  1293. and deacons

  1294. he's commending

  1295. that

  1296. good for the

  1297. church at

  1298. Philippi

  1299. they had

  1300. both

  1301. overseers

  1302. and

  1303. deacons

  1304. he's being

  1305. very careful

  1306. to address

  1307. this letter

  1308. to all

  1309. the saints

  1310. in Christ

  1311. Jesus

  1312. who are

  1313. at Philippi

  1314. he's being

  1315. very inclusive

  1316. and we do

  1317. well to

  1318. understand

  1319. that this

  1320. was a

  1321. letter

  1322. written by

  1323. a man

  1324. to a

  1325. group

  1326. of people

  1327. these were

  1328. real people

  1329. they existed

  1330. in time

  1331. and in

  1332. space

  1333. right

  1334. and this

  1335. letter had

  1336. a purpose

  1337. right

  1338. Paul had

  1339. something in

  1340. his mind

  1341. that he's

  1342. trying to

  1343. communicate

  1344. to these

  1345. people

  1346. as he

  1347. wrote it

  1348. but also

  1349. this letter

  1350. was inspired

  1351. by the

  1352. spirit of

  1353. Christ

  1354. and therefore

  1355. is also

  1356. addressed

  1357. to us

  1358. and to

  1359. all who

  1360. have believed

  1361. or who

  1362. will ever

  1363. believe

  1364. in

  1365. Christ

  1366. but to

  1367. get the

  1368. mind

  1369. of

  1370. Paul

  1371. we have

  1372. to

  1373. remember

  1374. that

  1375. he's

  1376. a

  1377. real

  1378. person

  1379. writing

  1380. a

  1381. real

  1382. letter

  1383. to

  1384. a

  1385. real

  1386. group

  1387. of

  1388. people

  1389. and then

  1390. we get

  1391. to

  1392. receive

  1393. the

  1394. wonderful

  1395. benefit

  1396. of

  1397. this

  1398. letter

  1399. written

  1400. between

  1401. these

  1402. saints

  1403. right

  1404. he's

  1405. thinking

  1406. of

  1407. all

  1408. the

  1409. saints

  1410. in

  1411. Christ

  1412. Jesus

  1413. who

  1414. are

  1415. at

  1416. Philippi

  1417. but

  1418. the

  1419. spirit

  1420. as

  1421. he

  1422. inspires

  1423. the

  1424. text

  1425. has

  1426. us

  1427. in

  1428. mind

  1429. has

  1430. you

  1431. in

  1432. mind

  1433. has

  1434. me

  1435. in

  1436. mind

  1437. as

  1438. we

  1439. sit

  1440. under

  1441. this

  1442. word

  1443. that's

  1444. why

  1445. on

  1446. Sunday

  1447. mornings

  1448. before

  1449. I read

  1450. the text

  1451. for the

  1452. morning

  1453. I

  1454. remind

  1455. you

  1456. beloved

  1457. this

  1458. is

  1459. God's

  1460. word

  1461. to

  1462. us

  1463. it

  1464. has

  1465. bearing

  1466. and

  1467. meaning

  1468. for

  1469. us

  1470. today

  1471. right

  1472. while

  1473. it

  1474. has

  1475. its

  1476. context

  1477. its

  1478. historical

  1479. context

  1480. it

  1481. means

  1482. something

  1483. for

  1484. us

  1485. today

  1486. and

  1487. it

  1488. was

  1489. written

  1490. for

  1491. his

  1492. glory

  1493. and

  1494. our

  1495. good

  1496. and

  1497. because

  1498. of

  1499. that

  1500. right

  1501. we

  1502. would

  1503. do

  1504. well

  1505. to

  1506. listen

  1507. to

  1508. it

  1509. to

  1510. believe

  1511. its

  1512. promises

  1513. and

  1514. to

  1515. obey

  1516. its

  1517. commands

  1518. now

  1519. Paul

  1520. gives

  1521. these

  1522. people

  1523. and

  1524. us

  1525. a

  1526. very

  1527. specific

  1528. title

  1529. what

  1530. does

  1531. he

  1532. call

  1533. them

  1534. saints

  1535. he

  1536. calls

  1537. them

  1538. saints

  1539. this

  1540. title

  1541. refers

  1542. to

  1543. someone

  1544. who

  1545. is

  1546. set

  1547. apart

  1548. for

  1549. God

  1550. and

  1551. not

  1552. the

  1553. way

  1554. the

  1555. Catholics

  1556. treat

  1557. that

  1558. special

  1559. sainthood

  1560. Paul

  1561. saying

  1562. all

  1563. Christians

  1564. anyone

  1565. who

  1566. is

  1567. found

  1568. in

  1569. Christ

  1570. is

  1571. a

  1572. saint

  1573. has

  1574. been

  1575. set

  1576. apart

  1577. for

  1578. God

  1579. the

  1580. Greek

  1581. word

  1582. is

  1583. which

  1584. is

  1585. often

  1586. translated

  1587. holy

  1588. so

  1589. when

  1590. we

  1591. see

  1592. the

  1593. word

  1594. saints

  1595. we

  1596. can

  1597. also

  1598. read

  1599. holy

  1600. ones

  1601. people

  1602. set

  1603. apart

  1604. for

  1605. God

  1606. Paul

  1607. is

  1608. referring

  1609. to

  1610. their

  1611. status

  1612. in

  1613. Christ

  1614. Jesus

  1615. when

  1616. God

  1617. saves

  1618. us

  1619. he

  1620. changes

  1621. us

  1622. fundamentally

  1623. we

  1624. become

  1625. different

  1626. we're

  1627. not

  1628. changed

  1629. in

  1630. degree

  1631. you

  1632. don't

  1633. become

  1634. a

  1635. little

  1636. bit

  1637. better

  1638. you

  1639. are

  1640. changed

  1641. in

  1642. kind

  1643. you

  1644. are

  1645. regenerate

  1646. you

  1647. are

  1648. made

  1649. new

  1650. and

  1651. then

  1652. because

  1653. we

  1654. are

  1655. changed

  1656. in

  1657. kind

  1658. we

  1659. can

  1660. be

  1661. changed

  1662. in

  1663. degree

  1664. to

  1665. be

  1666. more

  1667. like

  1668. God

  1669. who

  1670. has

  1671. declared

  1672. we

  1673. are

  1674. we

  1675. are

  1676. changed

  1677. in

  1678. kind

  1679. fundamentally

  1680. we

  1681. are

  1682. now

  1683. given

  1684. the

  1685. title

  1686. saint

  1687. we're

  1688. not

  1689. becoming

  1690. saints

  1691. we

  1692. are

  1693. saints

  1694. we're

  1695. very

  1696. often

  1697. not

  1698. saintly

  1699. we

  1700. do

  1701. still

  1702. sin

  1703. but

  1704. we

  1705. are

  1706. saints

  1707. that

  1708. is

  1709. why

  1710. Paul

  1711. has

  1712. the

  1713. moxie

  1714. to say

  1715. in

  1716. chapter

  1717. 1

  1718. in

  1719. verse

  1720. 6

  1721. I

  1722. am

  1723. sure

  1724. of

  1725. this

  1726. that

  1727. he

  1728. who

  1729. began

  1730. a

  1731. good

  1732. work

  1733. in

  1734. you

  1735. will

  1736. bring

  1737. it

  1738. to

  1739. completion

  1740. at

  1741. the

  1742. day

  1743. of

  1744. Christ

  1745. saying

  1746. you

  1747. you

  1748. saints

  1749. because

  1750. God

  1751. made

  1752. you

  1753. saints

  1754. he's

  1755. going

  1756. to

  1757. work

  1758. that

  1759. out

  1760. he's

  1761. going

  1762. to

  1763. bring

  1764. that

  1765. to

  1766. completion

  1767. your

  1768. sanctification

  1769. at the

  1770. day

  1771. of

  1772. Christ

  1773. not

  1774. by

  1775. any

  1776. plan

  1777. it

  1778. was

  1779. wonderful

  1780. that

  1781. this

  1782. morning's

  1783. new

  1784. city

  1785. catechism

  1786. question

  1787. was about

  1788. justification

  1789. and

  1790. sanctification

  1791. right

  1792. justification

  1793. declares

  1794. us

  1795. righteous

  1796. before

  1797. God

  1798. sanctification

  1799. is the

  1800. gradual

  1801. outworking

  1802. of us

  1803. becoming

  1804. more

  1805. like

  1806. Christ

  1807. significantly

  1808. Paul

  1809. says of

  1810. these

  1811. people

  1812. and us

  1813. that

  1814. we

  1815. are

  1816. saints

  1817. but

  1818. saints

  1819. in

  1820. Christ

  1821. Jesus

  1822. we

  1823. cannot

  1824. be

  1825. saints

  1826. apart

  1827. from

  1828. Christ

  1829. Jesus

  1830. we

  1831. cannot

  1832. be

  1833. set

  1834. apart

  1835. for

  1836. God

  1837. without

  1838. the

  1839. saving

  1840. work

  1841. of

  1842. Christ

  1843. Jesus

  1844. on

  1845. our

  1846. behalf

  1847. that's

  1848. why

  1849. Peter

  1850. declares

  1851. in

  1852. Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1853. chapter

  1854. 4

  1855. and

  1856. verse

  1857. 12

  1858. there

  1859. is

  1860. salvation

  1861. in

  1862. no

  1863. one

  1864. else

  1865. for

  1866. there

  1867. is

  1868. no

  1869. other

  1870. name

  1871. under

  1872. heaven

  1873. given

  1874. among

  1875. men

  1876. by

  1877. which

  1878. we

  1879. must

  1880. be

  1881. saved

  1882. Paul's

  1883. doing

  1884. something

  1885. very

  1886. significant

  1887. when he

  1888. calls

  1889. them

  1890. saints

  1891. in

  1892. Christ

  1893. Jesus

  1894. there's

  1895. no

  1896. other

  1897. way

  1898. to

  1899. be

  1900. set

  1901. apart

  1902. for

  1903. God

  1904. than

  1905. in

  1906. Christ

  1907. so

  1908. we

  1909. can only

  1910. be

  1911. set

  1912. apart

  1913. for

  1914. God

  1915. with

  1916. Christ

  1917. but

  1918. Paul

  1919. doesn't

  1920. say

  1921. saints

  1922. with

  1923. Christ

  1924. he

  1925. says

  1926. saints

  1927. in

  1928. Christ

  1929. Jesus

  1930. Paul

  1931. uses

  1932. this

  1933. phrase

  1934. in

  1935. Christ

  1936. Jesus

  1937. or

  1938. some

  1939. variation

  1940. of it

  1941. like

  1942. in

  1943. Christ

  1944. or

  1945. in

  1946. the

  1947. Lord

  1948. 124

  1949. times

  1950. in

  1951. his

  1952. writing

  1953. that's

  1954. a lot

  1955. you're

  1956. going to

  1957. see

  1958. this

  1959. you start

  1960. to

  1961. pay

  1962. attention

  1963. in

  1964. your

  1965. New

  1966. Testament

  1967. reading

  1968. these

  1969. types

  1970. of

  1971. phrase

  1972. in

  1973. Jesus

  1974. Christ

  1975. in

  1976. Christ

  1977. Jesus

  1978. in

  1979. Christ

  1980. or

  1981. in

  1982. the

  1983. Lord

  1984. 124

  1985. times

  1986. in

  1987. his

  1988. writing

  1989. so

  1990. we

  1991. have

  1992. to

  1993. pay

  1994. very

  1995. careful

  1996. attention

  1997. to

  1998. what

  1999. he

  2000. means

  2001. by

  2002. it

  2003. Paul

  2004. is

  2005. reminding

  2006. them

  2007. and

  2008. us

  2009. that

  2010. we

  2011. are

  2012. not

  2013. saints

  2014. holy

  2015. ones

  2016. for

  2017. God

  2018. because

  2019. of

  2020. a

  2021. righteousness

  2022. of

  2023. our

  2024. own

  2025. impossible

  2026. cannot

  2027. produce

  2028. the

  2029. kind

  2030. of

  2031. righteousness

  2032. required

  2033. by

  2034. God

  2035. but

  2036. because

  2037. as

  2038. Martin

  2039. Luther

  2040. called

  2041. it

  2042. an

  2043. alien

  2044. righteousness

  2045. a

  2046. righteousness

  2047. that

  2048. comes

  2049. from

  2050. outside

  2051. of

  2052. us

  2053. the

  2054. righteousness

  2055. that

  2056. justifies

  2057. us

  2058. before

  2059. God

  2060. must

  2061. be a

  2062. perfect

  2063. righteousness

  2064. you

  2065. can't

  2066. be

  2067. pretty

  2068. good

  2069. or

  2070. mostly

  2071. good

  2072. you

  2073. have

  2074. to

  2075. be

  2076. completely

  2077. good

  2078. and

  2079. we

  2080. cannot

  2081. do

  2082. this

  2083. on

  2084. our

  2085. own

  2086. the

  2087. righteousness

  2088. that

  2089. makes

  2090. us

  2091. saints

  2092. must

  2093. be

  2094. distilled

  2095. to

  2096. us

  2097. from

  2098. an

  2099. outside

  2100. source

  2101. and

  2102. this

  2103. source

  2104. must

  2105. be

  2106. the

  2107. Lord

  2108. Jesus

  2109. Christ

  2110. because

  2111. he

  2112. obtained

  2113. his

  2114. righteousness

  2115. this

  2116. righteousness

  2117. that's

  2126. by

  2127. a

  2128. perfect

  2129. life

  2130. that's

  2131. why

  2132. God

  2133. saved

  2134. us

  2135. this

  2136. way

  2137. right

  2138. he

  2151. that

  2152. that

  2153. perfect

  2154. righteousness

  2155. might be

  2156. given

  2157. to us

  2158. by

  2159. faith

  2160. in him

  2161. imputed

  2162. to us

  2163. Paul wrote

  2164. in Romans

    Romans 4:22

  2165. chapter 4

  2166. verse 22

  2167. and following

  2168. that is

  2169. why

  2170. Abraham's

  2171. faith

  2172. was

  2173. counted

  2174. to him

  2175. as

  2176. righteousness

  2177. but

  2178. the

  2179. words

  2180. it

  2181. was

  2182. counted

  2183. to him

  2186. written

  2187. for

  2188. his

  2190. alone

  2191. but

  2192. for

  2193. ours

  2194. also

  2195. it

  2196. will

  2197. be

  2198. counted

  2199. to

  2200. us

  2201. who

  2202. believe

  2213. this

  2214. righteousness

  2215. it

  2216. this

  2217. righteousness

  2218. will be

  2219. counted

  2220. to

  2221. us

  2222. who

  2223. believe

  2224. in

  2225. him

  2236. you

  2237. have

  2238. believed

  2239. in

  2240. the

  2268. hear

  2269. this

  2270. gospel

  2271. truth

  2272. constantly

  2273. and

  2274. I

  2398. is

  2399. destruction

  2400. there's

  2401. nothing

  2402. this

  2449. for

  2456. this past

  2457. week

  2458. is God

  2459. pleased

  2468. or the

  2472. or the

  2473. good

  2474. that you

  2475. didn't

  2476. do

  2477. but because

  2478. of

  2479. Christ's

  2480. perfect

  2481. righteousness

  2482. we are

  2483. imperfect

  2484. people

  2485. declared

  2486. saints

  2487. because of

  2488. who

  2489. Jesus is

  2490. because of

  2491. his

  2525. to

  2526. reach

  2527. to

  2528. God

  2529. Christianity

  2530. declares

  2531. that we

  2532. are unable

  2533. to climb

  2534. and yet

  2535. our

  2536. God

  2537. came

  2538. down

  2539. the

  2541. to

  2542. us

  2543. all

  2544. we

  2545. have

  2546. to

  2548. is

  2549. receive

  2550. this

  2551. wonderful

  2552. gift

  2553. that's

  2554. found

  2555. repentance

  2556. and faith

  2557. to be

  2558. declared

  2559. saints

  2560. in

  2561. Christ

  2600. I'm

  2601. going to

  2602. read

  2603. this

  2604. salutation

  2605. as my

  2606. closing

  2607. words

  2608. for our

  2620. to

  2621. you

  2622. and

  2623. peace

  2624. from

  2625. God

  2628. and

  2629. Lord

  2630. Jesus

  2631. Christ

  2632. let's
