  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  2. And I'm a little note heavy this morning.

  3. So you may find my pace speeding up because I'd like to complete the notes this morning and to do so in a reasonable amount of time and certainly for the sake of parents with children this morning.

  4. So let's get right to it.

  5. But before we read the text, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's Word to us.

  6. It was written for His glory and our good.

  7. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  8. Philippians chapter 3, beginning in verse 1.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  9. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  10. To write the same thing to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

  11. Look out for the dogs.

  12. Look out for the evildoers.

  13. Look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

  14. For we are the circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.

  15. Now, the Christian church has a problem in our day.

  16. The problem of false conversion.

  17. I believe this is largely due to the nature of our gospel presentations.

  18. We offer the free grace of God to all people as it is and as we should.

  19. But we have largely neglected to balance this offer with the costly call of following Christ.

  20. Today's church has almost altogether ignored texts like Mark chapter 8, verse 34 and 35, where Jesus said,

    Mark 8:34

  21. If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

  22. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  23. But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospels will save it.

  24. The cross was a place of death.

  25. Someone who is willing to give all that they are for the sake of gaining Christ can have Christ.

  26. And Luke chapter 14, verse 28 and following.

    Luke 14:28

  27. Jesus says,

  28. For which of you desiring to build the tower does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

  29. Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying,

  30. This man began to build and was not able to finish.

  31. Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with 10,000 men to meet him who comes against him with 20,000?

  32. And if not, while the other is a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

  33. What is Jesus talking about when he gives these examples?

  34. Verse 33 tells us,

  35. So, therefore, if any one of you does not renounce all that he has, cannot be my disciple.

  36. So, many people have made professions of faith in Jesus Christ, but have not truly been converted.

  37. This kind of easy-believe-ism, cheap-grace type of gospel that the church today presents so often.

  38. These people are false Christians, not genuine Christians.

  39. This should be a sobering thing to realize.

  40. It is altogether possible to declare that you are in the faith and not be in the faith.

  41. It is possible to think that you are saved and your end be destruction.

  42. This is not the first time we have considered this, and it will not be the last,

  43. because the Bible is packed with teaching on the matter.

  44. New Testament writers are very concerned with this, that people would not truly respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ,

  45. that they would think they're saved and find that they're not in the end.

  46. Let me just give you a few quick examples of this teaching.

  47. Jesus was concerned about it.

  48. Matthew 7, verse 21 and following.

    Matthew 7:21

  49. He says,

  50. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  51. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  52. On that day, many will say to me, Lord, Lord, do we not prophesy in your name,

  53. and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?

  54. The people who claim Christ as Lord and do powerful signs in his name.

  55. Verse 23 says,

  56. And then I will declare to them,

  57. I never knew you.

  58. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  59. Jesus also told the parable of the sower.

  60. You can find it in Matthew chapter 13 and Mark 4 and Luke chapter 8,

Matthew 13 chapter mention Luke 8 chapter mention

  61. where there's seed that falls on the ground,

  62. and it's snatched away by birds, which represent the devil,

  63. steals the truth away.

  64. There's seed that falls on rocky soil,

  65. and because it has no depth,

  66. because it brings forth plant,

  67. but there's no root.

  68. The sun of tribulation comes and withers away.

  69. So people make professions,

  70. and they seem to be in the faith,

  71. and yet we find that they're not.

  72. And there's some that falls amongst the thorns,

  73. and the thorns represent the cares of the world,

  74. and the cares of the world choke out.

  75. The truth of the gospel.

  76. Paul's also concerned about this in our text today,

  77. and in many other places.

  78. Here's a few examples.

  79. He writes to the Corinthians,

  80. chapter 13 and verse 5.

  81. Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.

  82. Test yourselves,

  83. or do you not realize this about yourselves,

  84. that Jesus Christ is in you,

  85. unless indeed you fail to meet the test.

  86. He writes to Timothy in 2 Timothy 3, 5,

  87. as he's warning him about false teachers.

  88. He says,

  89. they have the appearance of godliness,

  90. but deny the gospel's power.

  91. And then to Titus in chapter 1 and verse 16,

  92. same type of warning.

  93. They profess to know God,

  94. but they deny him by their works.

  95. They are detestable, disobedient,

  96. unfit for any good work.

  97. You see,

  98. this problem that we have today

  99. is not a problem new to our day.

  100. In the various earliest days of the church,

  101. people sought what they could gain

  102. by professing to be Christians,

  103. but gave no evidence of their conversion.

  104. Take some time on your own

  105. to note the life of Simon in Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  106. This is just when the first dispersion

  107. of the church from Jerusalem had happened.

  108. And we already see this kind of thing taking place.

  109. As Paul writes to the Philippians,

  110. he has a particular group of false converts in mind.

  111. These false Christians did not seek

  112. to subtract from the requirement of faith,

  113. but to add to it.

  114. In the ESV translation,

  115. which I'm preaching from today,

  116. I know that many of you have in front of you.

  117. They are called the dogs, the evildoers,

  118. those who mutilate the flesh.

  119. But the NASB translation,

  120. which is a wonderful translation of the Bible,

  121. renders the phrase,

  122. those who mutilate the flesh,

  123. as the false circumcision.

  124. There's a particular group in mind,

  125. as Paul is writing here to the Philippians.

  126. These people were Jewish people

  127. who had professed to be Christians

  128. and made it their aim

  129. to convince Gentile converts

  130. that they must be circumcised

  131. in order to be genuine Christians.

  132. They were adding the work of circumcision

  133. to the faith of these Gentile believers.

  134. And this made Paul furious.

  135. Many times in the scripture we read

  136. his indictment of these particular people.

  137. Paul was very clear

  138. about the matter of circumcision.

  139. Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  140. beginning in verse 25.

  141. For circumcision indeed is of value

  142. if you obey the law.

  143. But if you break the law,

  144. your circumcision becomes uncircumcision.

  145. Everybody's broken the law.

  146. So if a man who is uncircumcised

  147. keeps the precepts of the law,

  148. will not his uncircumcision

  149. be regarded as circumcision?

  150. And how do we keep the law?

  151. We keep it in Christ.

  152. Then he who is physically uncircumcised

  153. but keeps the law

  154. will condemn you

  155. who have the written code

  156. and circumcision,

  157. but break the law.

  158. For no one is a Jew

  159. who is merely one outwardly,

  160. nor is circumcision outward and physical.

  161. But a Jew is one inwardly,

  162. and circumcision is a matter of the heart

  163. by the Spirit,

  164. not by the letter.

  165. His praise is not from man,

  166. but from God.

  167. Righteousness,

  168. or perfect law-keeping,

  169. comes by faith

  170. in Jesus' perfect law-keeping.

  171. We are incapable of keeping the law.

  172. The Old Testament

  173. is predominantly about proving

  174. this very point.

  175. We're given a standard

  176. that we cannot keep

  177. so that we would look to

  178. another source

  179. for our salvation.

  180. Right?

  181. The law is a teacher to us

  182. of our need

  183. of a Savior.

  184. We cannot find ourselves

  185. approved before God

  186. by our works.

  187. It will never happen.

  188. Listen to the words of Paul

  189. to the Galatian believers

  190. whose consciences

  191. have been swayed

  192. by these Judaizers,

  193. as they were called.

  194. He says in chapter 3,

  195. verse 1 and following,

  196. O foolish Galatians,

  197. who has bewitched you?

  198. It was before your eyes

  199. that Jesus Christ

  200. was publicly portrayed

  201. as crucified.

  202. Let me ask you only this.

  203. Did you receive the Spirit

  204. by works of the law

  205. or by hearing with faith?

  206. The answer is by hearing with faith.

  207. That's how they received

  208. the Spirit.

  209. Are you so foolish?

  210. Having begun by the Spirit,

  211. are you now being perfected

  212. by the flesh?

  213. Did you suffer so many things

  214. in vain,

  215. if indeed it was in vain?

  216. Does he who supplies

  217. the Spirit to you

  218. and works miracles among you

  219. do so by works of the law

  220. or by hearing with faith?

  221. Just as Abraham believed God

  222. and it was counted to him

  223. as righteousness.

  224. Abraham's righteousness,

  225. the father of the Jews,

  226. was given to him

  227. not because of works,

  228. but because of faith.

  229. Today's text is meant to serve

  230. both as a warning

  231. and as an encouragement.

  232. For those not in Christ this morning,

  233. weigh out whether or not

  234. you have repented of your sin

  235. and thrown yourself

  236. on the mercy of God.

  237. For those of you who are

  238. in Christ this morning,

  239. have your hope in the gospel

  240. of Jesus Christ spurred on.

  241. We have a great hope in Christ.

  242. In Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3:1–3

  243. verses 1 through 3,

  244. Paul means to juxtapose for us

  245. the false Christian

  246. and the genuine Christian.

  247. So our outline for this text

  248. will be as follows.

  249. genuine Christians,

  250. Christians,

  251. excuse me,

  252. questions,

  253. clear my throat,

  254. genuine Christians,

  255. one, rejoice in the Lord,

  256. two, look out,

  257. the way ESV renders that,

  258. look out,

  259. three, worship in the spirit of God,

  260. four, glory in Christ Jesus,

  261. and five,

  262. put no confidence in the flesh.

  263. And I'll repeat all those for you,

  264. of course.

  265. Genuine Christians,

  266. number one,

  267. rejoice in the Lord.

  268. He says in the first part of verse 1,

  269. finally my brothers,

  270. rejoice in the Lord.

  271. Finally could also be rendered

  272. furthermore or so then.

  273. In this case,

  274. it's a transitional word.

  275. Half of the letter still remains,

  276. so it's reasonable to feel

  277. like this conclusion word

  278. is out of place.

  279. I think we do well

  280. when we get to chapter 3

  281. and go,

  282. finally,

  283. what do you mean?

  284. He's not about to wrap

  285. the letter up.

  286. And I don't think that Paul

  287. gets to this place

  288. and makes a mistake.

  289. Like he thought he was about

  290. to conclude the letter

  291. and yet he didn't quite.

  292. So I think we ought to see here,

  293. furthermore,

  294. my brothers,

  295. rejoice in the Lord.

  296. Paul has spoken much

  297. in this letter so far

  298. about rejoicing.

  299. You can see chapter 1,

  300. verse 4,

  301. and verse 18,

  302. and verse 25.

  303. Chapter 2,

  304. verse 2,

  305. verse 17 and 18,

  306. and verse 28 and 29.

  307. There's much of the theme

  308. of the book of Philippians

  309. is about joy or rejoicing.

  310. Here he specifically says

  311. that genuine Christians

  312. rejoice in the Lord.

  313. Joy should not be seen

  314. as happiness.

  315. We confuse those two words

  316. in our English vernacular.

  317. Happiness is a feeling

  318. that is based in circumstance.

  319. The root word of happiness

  320. is the same as the word

  321. for happenstance

  322. or circumstance.

  323. Happiness is not bad.

  324. Don't hear me say

  325. that it's bad to be happy.

  326. It's a joyful thing

  327. to go to a birthday party

  328. and enjoy the cake.

  329. Happiness comes from that.

  330. But joy is much better.

  331. Joy is the superior emotion

  332. to happiness.

  333. Joy is a divine emotion

  334. rooted in the future promises

  335. of God regardless

  336. of our circumstance.

  337. Let me say that again.

  338. Joy is a divine emotion

  339. rooted in the future promises

  340. of God regardless

  341. of our circumstance.

  342. We cannot produce it

  343. on our own.

  344. It's divine.

  345. It's birthed in us

  346. by the power of the Spirit

  347. and so it is a mark

  348. of genuine Christians.

  349. Bulletin says,

  350. the quote on your bulletin

  351. says by Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  352. God's people are meant

  353. to be people

  354. who are always rejoicing

  355. in the Lord.

  356. Who he is to us

  357. and that we belong to him.

  358. I hope that when we speak

  359. of joy,

  360. you know what we mean.

  361. And when I talk about it

  362. being this divine emotion

  363. rooted in future promises,

  364. you can say,

  365. yeah, yeah,

  366. I have that joy.

  367. I recognize that regardless

  368. of the circumstances

  369. I'm walking through,

  370. there is promise for me

  371. that you get pulled

  372. through the sorrow

  373. that this life delves out

  374. and it is full of sorrow.

  375. Young people,

  376. the longer you live,

  377. the more you will feel

  378. the weight of the utter

  379. brokenness of this world.

  380. And if you don't have

  381. gospel joy

  382. to override that,

  383. you will be left

  384. despondent.

  385. But if you are in the Lord,

  386. if you are in Christ,

  387. you have much

  388. to have joy in.

  389. I hope you know

  390. what we're talking about

  391. when we say this.

  392. If you don't,

  393. you may not

  394. be in Christ.

  395. You may not have a reason

  396. for joy

  397. at all.

  398. So do you experience

  399. this joy

  400. in the deepest recess

  401. of your soul

  402. despite what's going on

  403. around you,

  404. despite the sorrow

  405. that this life

  406. just serves up

  407. again and again?

  408. Do you rejoice

  409. that you are God's

  410. and He is yours?

  411. Do you hang

  412. on His promises?

  413. Genuine Christians

  414. rejoice in the Lord.

  415. Secondly,

  416. genuine Christians

  417. look out.

  418. Last half of verse 1,

  419. Paul writes,

  420. to write the same things

  421. to you is no trouble

  422. to me and is safe

  423. for you.

  424. The verse numbering

  425. is not inspired.

  426. And I think

  427. that in this case,

  428. we need to move

  429. that little two

  430. elsewhere in the text.

  431. I don't think

  432. he's writing about joy

  433. when he says

  434. to write the same things

  435. to you is no trouble

  436. to me and is safe

  437. for you.

  438. It's about the warning

  439. he's about to give

  440. to these believers

  441. and to us.

  442. Verse 2,

  443. look out for the dogs.

  444. Look out for the evildoers.

  445. Look out for those

  446. who mutilate the flesh.

  447. The text says,

  448. look out.

  449. Some translations say,

  450. beware.

  451. I want you to see that

  452. what Paul means

  453. is discern.

  454. Actively be looking,

  455. being careful,

  456. thinking clearly

  457. and biblically

  458. about what it is

  459. you're being told.

  460. Genuine believers

  461. are to grow

  462. in their knowledge

  463. of the truth

  464. and,

  465. therefore,

  466. their ability

  467. to spot

  468. counterfeit

  469. truth.

  470. If we know

  471. the truth,

  472. if we are versed

  473. in the Bible,

  474. it's not all

  475. that difficult

  476. to spot

  477. those things

  478. that are untrue,

  479. those things

  480. that don't reconcile

  481. with what the Scripture

  482. teaches.

  483. Paul says

  484. to write the same

  485. things to you,

  486. which means

  487. that he must be

  488. reiterating a point

  489. that he has

  490. previously

  491. made.

  492. I think sometimes

  493. this is why our mind

  494. ties to the idea

  495. of joy

  496. because he's

  497. repeated joy,

  498. rejoicing over

  499. and over again,

  500. but I think he's

  501. referring back

  502. to Philippians 1,

    Philippians 1:27

  503. verse 27 and 28,

  504. where he wrote,

  505. Only let your manner

  506. of life be worthy

  507. of the gospel

  508. of Christ,

  509. so that whether

  510. I come and see you

  511. or am absent,

  512. I may hear of you

  513. that you are

  514. standing firm

  515. in one spirit

  516. with one mind

  517. striving side by side

  518. for the faith

  519. of the gospel.

  520. The faith of the gospel.

  521. Right?

  522. And not frightened

  523. in anything

  524. by your opponents.

  525. This is a clear sign

  526. to them of their

  527. destruction,

  528. but of your salvation

  529. and that from God.

  530. This is the writing

  531. the same things

  532. to you,

  533. I believe that he's

  534. referring to,

  535. that we would be

  536. as a church,

  537. as churches,

  538. the Philippian church,

  539. would be standing

  540. together,

  541. firm,

  542. right?

  543. Discerning

  544. the truth.

  545. We are to discern

  546. those who teach

  547. in contradiction

  548. to the gospel

  549. of Jesus Christ.

  550. The good news

  551. that we are saved

  552. by grace alone,

  553. through faith alone,

  554. through Jesus Christ

  555. alone.

  556. There are so many

  557. false gospels

  558. and peddlers

  559. of false gospels,

  560. right?

  561. They abound.

  562. And the genuine

  563. Christian must be

  564. trained in the word

  565. in order to not

  566. be led astray

  567. by such teaching.

  568. Paul exhorts us

  569. to look out,

  570. beware,

  571. discern,

  572. because it is safe

  573. for us.

  574. Open-mindedness

  575. in the church

  576. is the siren call

  577. of the false teachers,

  578. right?

  579. Oh, tolerance

  580. seems to be

  581. the highest order

  582. of our day,

  583. right?

  584. As long as

  585. somebody's intentions

  586. are good,

  587. then let them say

  588. what they will.

  589. The genuine Christian

  590. will not lay aside

  591. loving kindness

  592. and gentleness,

  593. but they will

  594. contend

  595. for the truth.

  596. They will consider

  597. those who add to

  598. or subtract from

  599. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  600. dogs

  601. and evildoers.

  602. We must

  603. hold

  604. firm

  605. the gospel

  606. once for all

  607. delivered

  608. to the saints

  609. because it's good

  610. for people.

  611. We must not

  612. tolerate

  613. false

  614. teachers.

  615. And beloved,

  616. I will tell you

  617. that they are

  618. in our backyard

  619. and they're

  620. influencing your

  621. friends

  622. and your

  623. co-workers

  624. and your

  625. classmates

  626. and your

  627. family.

  628. There are

  629. false

  630. teachers

  631. abounding

  632. around us.

  633. The dogs

  634. that Paul

  635. is referring

  636. to were not

  637. the domestic

  638. cedokine

  639. that may come

  640. to your mind.

  641. This is not

  642. your lap dog

  643. that he's

  644. referring to

  645. here,

  646. but they

  647. were wild,

  648. ravenous,

  649. dangerous

  650. dogs.

  651. In fact,

  652. he's doing

  653. a turn of

  654. phrase here

  655. because often

  656. the Jews

  657. referred to

  658. Gentiles

  659. as dogs

  660. and here

  661. he's calling

  662. Jews who

  663. would lead

  664. the Gentiles

  665. astray

  666. from the

  667. true gospel

  668. of Jesus

  669. Christ

  670. dogs.

  671. They were

  672. dangerous

  673. men

  674. that he's

  675. talking about

  676. here.

  677. He's calling

  678. these teachers

  679. destructive

  680. for the good

  681. of people.

  682. He further

  683. declares

  684. their teaching

  685. evil

  686. and calling

  687. them

  688. evil

  689. doers.

  690. Beloved,

  691. we tend

  692. to give

  693. ear to

  694. many false

  695. teachers

  696. because

  697. of this

  698. presumed

  699. good

  700. intent.

  701. Paul does

  702. no such

  703. thing

  704. and exhorts

  705. us

  706. to the same.

  707. And let me

  708. just as an

  709. aside say

  710. of pastors

  711. who are

  712. false

  713. teachers,

  714. they bear

  715. a responsibility

  716. for the

  717. word that

  718. they preach.

  719. We can be

  720. heartbroken

  721. for them,

  722. but they

  723. have the

  724. same text.

  725. It is

  726. inerrant

  727. and it

  728. is sufficient

  729. and all

  730. they need

  731. to do

  732. is open

  733. it and

  734. read it.

  735. Deliver

  736. it to

  737. their people.

  738. They really

  739. have no

  740. excuse and

  741. I can tell

  742. you they'll

  743. have no

  744. excuse on

  745. the day

  746. of judgment.

  747. If we're

  748. going to

  749. love our

  750. community

  751. with the

  752. love of

  753. Christ,

  754. we must

  755. be

  756. discerning.

  757. We must

  758. help people.

  759. We must

  760. lead them

  761. to the

  762. truth,

  763. the truth

  764. that is

  765. safe

  766. for us

  767. and for

  768. them.

  769. We must

  770. look out.

  771. We must

  772. each of

  773. us be

  774. more and

  775. more like

  776. the Berean

  777. brothers and

  778. sisters we

  779. can read

  780. about in

  781. Acts chapter

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  782. 17.

  783. Paul came

  784. to them,

  785. to the

  786. Jews in

  787. Berea,

  788. teaching them

  789. of the

  790. gospel of

  791. Jesus Christ,

  792. saying this

  793. Jesus is

  794. the Messiah

  795. that the

  796. Old Testament

  797. speaks of.

  798. In Acts

    Acts 17:11

  799. 17 verse

  800. 11 says,

  801. they were

  802. more noble

  803. than those

  804. Jews in

  805. Thessalonica,

  806. who had

  807. rejected

  808. the gospel

  809. because they

  810. received the

  811. word with

  812. all eagerness.

  813. They were

  814. willing to

  815. be taught

  816. something new.

  817. What do

  818. they do

  819. with it?

  820. They

  821. examine

  822. the

  823. scriptures

  824. daily to

  825. see if

  826. these

  827. things

  828. were so.

  829. This is

  830. how we

  831. are meant

  832. to be,

  833. to hear

  834. things,

  835. take it,

  836. discern it

  837. by the

  838. scripture,

  839. the only

  840. standard

  841. of truth.

  842. truth.

  843. So,

  844. genuine

  845. Christians

  846. look out.

  847. Are you

  848. working to

  849. be trained

  850. in the

  851. truth?

  852. Do you

  853. read your

  854. Bible?

  855. Do you

  856. sit under

  857. faithful

  858. teaching?

  859. Not

  860. personality

  861. driven

  862. teaching,

  863. but truth

  864. driven

  865. teaching.

  866. Someone who's

  867. willing to

  868. open up the

  869. text and

  870. show you

  871. what it

  872. says.

  873. Help you

  874. to see it

  875. for

  876. yourself.

  877. I know

  878. we move

  879. so fast,

  880. but it's

  881. why I

  882. reference

  883. everything.

  884. I don't

  885. want to

  886. just say,

  887. and

  888. somewhere

  889. in

  890. Matthew

  891. it

  892. says.

  893. I'm

  894. going to

  895. give you

  896. the

  897. reference.

  898. You

  899. can

  900. go look

  901. at it

  902. for

  903. yourself.

  904. This

  905. is the

  906. standard

  907. of

  908. truth.

  909. Are

  910. you

  911. part

  912. of

  913. a

  914. community

  915. of

  916. faith

  917. that

  918. values

  919. the

  920. truth?

  921. Genuine

  922. Christians

  923. look out.

  924. Third,

  925. genuine

  926. Christians

  927. worship

  928. in the

  929. spirit

  930. of

  931. God.

  932. First

  933. part of

  934. verse

  935. three,

  936. for we

  937. are

  938. the

  939. circumcision

  940. who

  941. worship

  942. by the

  943. spirit

  944. of

  945. God.

  946. Again,

  947. I'll

  948. refer to

  949. the

  950. NASB

  951. translation

  952. of

  953. this

  954. verse

  955. which

  956. renders

  957. circumcision

  958. as

  959. true

  960. circumcision.

  961. So the

  962. NASB

  963. calls

  964. the

  965. one

  966. group

  967. the

  968. false

  969. circumcision

  970. and

  971. the

  972. Philippian

  973. believers

  974. the

  975. true

  976. circumcision.

  977. You

  978. see,

  979. circumcision

  980. was a

  981. sign

  982. of the

  983. covenant

  984. that was

  985. always

  986. meant

  987. to

  988. point

  989. to

  990. a

  991. greater

  992. reality

  993. that

  994. will

  995. be

  996. realized

  997. in

  998. Jesus

  999. Christ.

  1000. The Old

  1001. Testament

  1002. speaks of

  1003. this.

  1004. Let me

  1005. give you

  1006. one example.

  1007. Jeremiah

  1008. chapter

  1009. four,

  1010. beginning

  1011. in

  1012. verse

  1013. one.

  1014. If you

  1015. return,

  1016. O Israel,

  1017. declares the

  1018. Lord,

  1019. to me,

  1020. you should

  1021. return.

  1022. If you

  1023. remove your

  1024. detestable things

  1025. from my

  1026. presence and

  1027. do not

  1028. waver,

  1029. and if you

  1030. swear as

  1031. the Lord

  1032. lives in

  1033. truth,

  1034. in justice,

  1035. and in

  1036. righteousness,

  1037. the nation

  1038. shall bless

  1039. themselves in

  1040. him,

  1041. and in

  1042. him shall

  1043. they glory.

  1044. for thus

  1045. says the

  1046. Lord to

  1047. the men

  1048. of Judah

  1049. and

  1050. Jerusalem,

  1051. break up

  1052. your

  1053. fallow

  1054. ground

  1055. and

  1056. sow

  1057. not

  1058. among

  1059. thorns.

  1060. Circumcise

  1061. yourselves to

  1062. the Lord,

  1063. remove the

  1064. foreskin

  1065. of your

  1066. hearts.

  1067. O

  1068. men of

  1069. Judah

  1070. and

  1071. inhabitants

  1072. of

  1073. Jerusalem,

  1074. lest my

  1075. wrath go

  1076. forth like

  1077. fire and

  1078. burn with

  1079. none to

  1080. quench it

  1081. because of

  1082. the evil

  1083. of your

  1084. deeds.

  1085. The

  1086. prophet

  1087. Jeremiah

  1088. is already

  1089. getting them

  1090. to learn,

  1091. helping them

  1092. understand that

  1093. circumcision was

  1094. not merely

  1095. an outward

  1096. thing.

  1097. It was

  1098. meant to

  1099. be an

  1100. inward

  1101. change.

  1102. Recall

  1103. Paul's

  1104. case from

  1105. Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  1106. chapter 2.

  1107. I read

  1108. to you

  1109. previously

  1110. verse 28

  1111. and 29.

  1112. For no

  1113. one is a

  1114. Jew who

  1115. is merely

  1116. one

  1117. outwardly,

  1118. nor is

  1119. circumcision

  1120. outward and

  1121. physical,

  1122. but a

  1123. Jew,

  1124. here God's

  1125. people,

  1126. is one

  1127. inwardly,

  1128. and circumcision

  1129. is a matter

  1130. of the heart

  1131. by the

  1132. spirit,

  1133. not by the

  1134. letter.

  1135. His praise

  1136. is not

  1137. from man,

  1138. but from

  1139. God.

  1140. Salvation

  1141. does not

  1142. come from

  1143. our keeping

  1144. of the

  1145. law because

  1146. this is

  1147. impossible.

  1148. Salvation

  1149. comes by

  1150. faith in

  1151. the completed

  1152. work of

  1153. Jesus Christ,

  1154. imputed or

  1155. given to

  1156. us by

  1157. the power

  1158. of his

  1159. spirit.

  1160. Let's look

  1161. briefly at

  1162. a longer

  1163. explanation of

  1164. this in

  1165. John chapter

    John 4 chapter mention

  1166. 4.

  1167. So join me

  1168. there if you

  1169. would to

  1170. John chapter

    John 4 chapter mention

  1171. 4.

  1172. I'm going

  1173. to read

  1174. the account

  1175. of the

  1176. Samaritan

  1177. woman at

  1178. the

  1179. well.

  1180. This

  1181. sets up

  1182. the same

  1183. problem

  1184. of,

  1185. in this

  1186. case,

  1187. a woman,

  1188. not these

  1189. Judaizers,

  1190. but a

  1191. woman who

  1192. was looking

  1193. to the

  1194. outward

  1195. expression

  1196. of what

  1197. it meant

  1198. to belong

  1199. to God.

  1200. And Jesus

  1201. says something

  1202. striking and

  1203. helpful too

  1204. here.

  1205. So we're

  1206. going to

  1207. begin to

  1208. verse 1

  1209. and I'll

  1210. read fairly

  1211. quickly and

  1212. maybe pause

  1213. and make

  1214. some remarks

  1215. along the

  1216. way.

  1217. I don't

  1218. have any

  1219. remarks planned,

  1220. but we'll

  1221. see how it

  1222. goes.

  1223. Beginning

  1224. in verse 1.

  1225. Now when

  1226. Jesus learned

  1227. that the

  1228. Pharisees had

  1229. heard that

  1230. Jesus was

  1231. making and

  1232. baptizing more

  1233. disciples than

  1234. John,

  1235. although Jesus

  1236. himself did

  1237. not baptize,

  1238. but only his

  1239. disciples,

  1240. he left

  1241. Judea and

  1242. departed again

  1243. for Galilee.

  1244. And he had

  1245. to pass through

  1246. Samaria.

  1247. Now Samaria

  1248. was an area

  1249. of the land

  1250. where people

  1251. who were

  1252. half-breeds

  1253. lived.

  1254. People who

  1255. in the

  1256. return from

  1257. exile had

  1258. gone intermarried

  1259. amongst the

  1260. people of the

  1261. land, so they

  1262. were seen as

  1263. lesser people.

  1264. They were

  1265. kind of

  1266. cast out

  1267. from the

  1268. Jewish

  1269. purity

  1270. otherwise.

  1271. They were

  1272. looked down

  1273. on people.

  1274. So verse 5.

  1275. So he came

  1276. to a town

  1277. of Samaria

  1278. called

  1279. Sakaar,

  1280. near the

  1281. field that

  1282. Jacob had

  1283. given to

  1284. his son

  1285. Joseph.

  1286. Jacob's

  1287. well was

  1288. there,

  1289. so Jesus

  1290. wearied as

  1291. he was

  1292. from his

  1293. journey,

  1294. was sitting

  1295. beside the

  1296. well.

  1297. It was

  1298. about the

  1299. sixth hour

  1300. midday.

  1301. A woman

  1302. from Samaria

  1303. came to

  1304. draw water.

  1305. Jesus said

  1306. to her,

  1307. give me a

  1308. drink.

  1309. For his

  1310. disciples had

  1311. gone away

  1312. into the

  1313. city to

  1314. buy food.

  1315. The

  1316. Samaritan

  1317. woman said

  1318. to him,

  1319. how is it

  1320. that you,

  1321. a Jew,

  1322. ask for a

  1323. drink from

  1324. me,

  1325. a woman of

  1326. Samaria,

  1327. for Jews

  1328. have no

  1329. dealings

  1330. with

  1331. Samaritans.

  1332. Jesus

  1333. answered her,

  1334. if you

  1335. knew the

  1336. gift of

  1337. God and

  1338. who it

  1339. is that

  1340. is saying

  1341. to you,

  1342. give me

  1343. a drink,

  1344. you would

  1345. have asked

  1346. him and

  1347. he would

  1348. have given

  1349. you living

  1350. water.

  1351. The woman

  1352. said to

  1353. him,

  1354. sir,

  1355. you have

  1356. nothing to

  1357. draw water

  1358. with and

  1359. the well

  1360. is deep.

  1361. Where do

  1362. you get

  1363. that living

  1364. water?

  1365. Are you

  1366. greater than

  1367. our father

  1368. Jacob?

  1369. He gave

  1370. us the well

  1371. and drank

  1372. from it

  1373. himself as

  1374. did his

  1375. sons and

  1376. his livestock.

  1377. Jesus

  1378. said to

  1379. her,

  1380. everyone

  1381. who drinks

  1382. of this

  1383. water will

  1384. be thirsty

  1385. again,

  1386. but whoever

  1387. drinks of

  1388. the water

  1389. that I

  1390. will give

  1391. him will

  1392. never be

  1393. thirsty

  1394. again.

  1395. The water

  1396. that I

  1397. will give

  1398. him will

  1399. become in

  1400. him a

  1401. spring of

  1402. water

  1403. welling

  1404. up to

  1405. eternal

  1406. life.

  1407. So Jesus

  1408. is speaking

  1409. metaphorically

  1410. of life

  1411. of the

  1412. spirit and

  1413. she's still

  1414. thinking real

  1415. practically,

  1416. right?

  1417. She just

  1418. wants to

  1419. have her

  1420. physical

  1421. thirst

  1422. met.

  1423. Verse 15,

  1424. the woman

  1425. said to

  1426. him,

  1427. sir,

  1428. give me

  1429. this water

  1430. so that I

  1431. will not be

  1432. thirsty or

  1433. have to

  1434. come here

  1435. Jesus said

  1436. to her,

  1437. go call

  1438. your husband

  1439. and come

  1440. here.

  1441. So he's

  1442. exposing her

  1443. sinfulness.

  1444. He's showing

  1445. her her

  1446. need of

  1447. living water.

  1448. The woman

  1449. answered him,

  1450. verse 17,

  1451. I have no

  1452. husband.

  1453. Jesus said

  1454. to her,

  1455. you are

  1456. right in

  1457. saying I

  1458. have no

  1459. husband,

  1460. for you

  1461. have had

  1462. five husbands

  1463. and the

  1464. one you

  1465. now have

  1466. is not

  1467. your

  1468. husband.

  1469. What

  1470. you have

  1471. said is

  1472. true.

  1473. The woman

  1474. said to

  1475. him,

  1476. sir,

  1477. I perceive

  1478. that you

  1479. are a

  1480. prophet.

  1481. Our

  1482. fathers

  1483. worshipped

  1484. on this

  1485. mountain

  1486. where they

  1487. are,

  1488. but you

  1489. say that

  1490. in Jerusalem

  1491. is the

  1492. place where

  1493. people

  1494. ought to

  1495. worship.

  1496. So she's

  1497. getting it,

  1498. right?

  1499. Jesus is

  1500. teaching her

  1501. a spiritual

  1502. thing.

  1503. She's

  1504. recognizing

  1505. her

  1506. sinfulness

  1507. and she's

  1508. trying to

  1509. understand

  1510. how it

  1511. is she's

  1512. to be

  1513. restored

  1514. to God.

  1515. We

  1516. worship

  1517. here,

  1518. but you

  1519. say we're

  1520. supposed

  1521. to worship

  1522. there.

  1523. Outward

  1524. sign.

  1525. Verse 21,

  1526. Jesus said

  1527. to her,

  1528. woman,

  1529. believe me,

  1530. the hour

  1531. is coming

  1532. when neither

  1533. on this

  1534. mountain nor

  1535. in Jerusalem

  1536. will you

  1537. worship the

  1538. Father.

  1539. You

  1540. worship what

  1541. you do

  1542. not know,

  1543. we worship

  1544. what we

  1545. know,

  1546. for salvation

  1547. is from

  1548. the Jews.

  1549. But the

  1550. hour is

  1551. coming and

  1552. is now

  1553. here when

  1554. the true

  1555. worshipers

  1556. will worship

  1557. the Father

  1558. in spirit

  1559. and truth,

  1560. for the

  1561. Father is

  1562. seeking such

  1563. people to

  1564. worship him.

  1565. God is

  1566. spirit and

  1567. those who

  1568. worship him

  1569. must worship

  1570. in spirit

  1571. and truth.

  1572. inner devotion,

  1573. change of

  1574. heart.

  1575. We will

  1576. do things

  1577. as outward

  1578. expressions

  1579. of who

  1580. we are,

  1581. but at

  1582. the core

  1583. of it,

  1584. we must

  1585. be fundamentally

  1586. changed.

  1587. We're going

  1588. to worship

  1589. in the

  1590. spirit of

  1591. God because

  1592. we have

  1593. the spirit

  1594. of God.

  1595. And I

  1596. think in

  1597. this moment,

  1598. she's being

  1599. changed.

  1600. verse 25,

  1601. the woman

  1602. said to

  1603. him,

  1604. I know

  1605. that Messiah

  1606. is coming,

  1607. he who

  1608. is called

  1609. Christ.

  1610. When he

  1611. comes,

  1612. he will

  1613. tell us

  1614. all things.

  1615. And Jesus

  1616. said to

  1617. her,

  1618. I who

  1619. speak to

  1620. you

  1621. am he.

  1622. So,

  1623. we worship

  1624. God in

  1625. the spirit

  1626. of God.

  1627. We are

  1628. given the

  1629. ability to

  1630. bring forth

  1631. fruit,

  1632. bring forth

  1633. devotion to

  1634. God because

  1635. we have

  1636. the spirit

  1637. of God.

  1638. So,

  1639. do you

  1640. place

  1641. confidence

  1642. in anything

  1643. other than

  1644. the power

  1645. of the

  1646. spirit of

  1647. Christ to

  1648. effectually

  1649. apply the

  1650. work of

  1651. Christ on

  1652. your behalf?

  1653. If you

  1654. place confidence

  1655. of your

  1656. worship in

  1657. the mode

  1658. of worship,

  1659. in the

  1660. feelings you

  1661. have in

  1662. worship,

  1663. all the

  1664. good things

  1665. you do,

  1666. it's very

  1667. likely that

  1668. it's

  1669. misplaced.

  1670. Many of

  1671. you know I

  1672. worked for

  1673. some time

  1674. at a local

  1675. university

  1676. called

  1677. Truett

  1678. McConnell

  1679. and I

  1680. was the

  1681. director of

  1682. admissions

  1683. and part

  1684. of the way

  1685. the school

  1686. expressed that

  1687. it was a

  1688. Christian

  1689. college is

  1690. that the

  1691. application

  1692. had a

  1693. testimony

  1694. section on

  1695. it.

  1696. We didn't

  1697. grade them.

  1698. It wasn't

  1699. like you

  1700. got demoted

  1701. points and

  1702. couldn't get

  1703. into the

  1704. school if

  1705. you weren't

  1706. truly a

  1707. believer.

  1708. It was just

  1709. a way of

  1710. saying,

  1711. oh,

  1712. don't miss

  1713. the fact

  1714. that we

  1715. are a

  1716. Christian

  1717. school.

  1718. How people

  1719. got to

  1720. that point

  1721. and missed

  1722. it,

  1723. I don't

  1724. know,

  1725. but they

  1726. seemed to.

  1727. And I

  1728. had to

  1729. stop reading

  1730. most of

  1731. them

  1732. expressed

  1733. the things

  1734. I do

  1735. that make

  1736. me a

  1737. Christian.

  1738. And I

  1739. go to

  1740. church and

  1741. I go on

  1742. mission trips

  1743. and I

  1744. go and

  1745. like listing

  1746. out the

  1747. things that

  1748. are these

  1749. evidences in

  1750. their minds

  1751. that they

  1752. were in

  1753. fact in

  1754. the faith,

  1755. but very

  1756. little talk

  1757. about the

  1758. completed work

  1759. of Jesus

  1760. Christ.

  1761. Do we

  1762. have evidences

  1763. that we're in

  1764. the faith?

  1765. Absolutely.

  1766. But more

  1767. than that,

  1768. when you're

  1769. sharing your

  1770. testimony,

  1771. you want to

  1772. talk about

  1773. the completed

  1774. work of

  1775. Jesus,

  1776. right?

  1777. Because

  1778. it's because

  1779. of that

  1780. that we're

  1781. found in

  1782. Christ and

  1783. we can

  1784. worship in

  1785. the Spirit

  1786. of God.

  1787. So genuine

  1788. Christians

  1789. worship in

  1790. the Spirit

  1791. of God.

  1792. Fourth,

  1793. genuine

  1794. Christians,

  1795. glory in

  1796. Christ Jesus.

  1797. Never fear,

  1798. these are

  1799. going to get

  1800. faster.

  1801. Glory in

  1802. Christ Jesus,

  1803. the last

  1804. half of

  1805. verse 3,

  1806. and glory

  1807. in Christ

  1808. Jesus.

  1809. John

  1810. MacArthur

  1811. in his

  1812. commentary on

  1813. this text

  1814. stated,

  1815. glory describes

  1816. boasting

  1817. with exultant

  1818. joy about

  1819. what a person

  1820. is most

  1821. proud of.

  1822. I really

  1823. like that,

  1824. and I knew

  1825. I couldn't

  1826. pass off

  1827. exultant as

  1828. my own

  1829. word.

  1830. So,

  1831. John

  1832. MacArthur

  1833. said,

  1834. glory describes

  1835. boasting

  1836. with exultant

  1837. joy about

  1838. what a person

  1839. is most

  1840. proud of,

  1841. right?

  1842. It's what

  1843. we brag

  1844. about.

  1845. Genuine

  1846. Christians know

  1847. that we have

  1848. nothing to

  1849. boast in

  1850. except for

  1851. the person

  1852. and work

  1853. of Jesus

  1854. Christ.

  1855. If we

  1856. glory,

  1857. we glory

  1858. in him.

  1859. We do

  1860. not commend

  1861. ourselves

  1862. to God

  1863. or to

  1864. anyone else

  1865. by anything

  1866. that we

  1867. have done,

  1868. but by

  1869. what God

  1870. has done.

  1871. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 10:17

  1872. chapter 10

  1873. verse 17

  1874. and 18,

  1875. let the

  1876. one who

  1877. boasts

  1878. boast

  1879. in the

  1880. Lord.

  1881. For it is

  1882. not the

  1883. one who

  1884. commends

  1885. himself

  1886. who is

  1887. approved,

  1888. but the

  1889. one whom

  1890. the Lord

  1891. commends.

  1892. in

  1893. contrast,

  1894. the

  1895. false

  1896. Christian

  1897. boasts

  1898. in

  1899. their

  1900. works.

  1901. This

  1902. must not

  1903. be and

  1904. will not

  1905. be so

  1906. among

  1907. genuine

  1908. Christians.

  1909. To be a

  1910. Christian is

  1911. to be

  1912. humbled

  1913. before

  1914. God.

  1915. So,

  1916. do you

  1917. glory in

  1918. Christ

  1919. alone.

  1920. Would you

  1921. say that

  1922. you are

  1923. accepted by

  1924. God

  1925. because

  1926. of

  1927. Jesus

  1928. and because

  1929. of Jesus

  1930. alone?

  1931. Do you

  1932. find yourself

  1933. believing that

  1934. you have

  1935. anything to

  1936. offer God

  1937. apart from

  1938. Christ?

  1939. Genuine

  1940. Christians,

  1941. glory in

  1942. Christ Jesus.

  1943. And lastly,

  1944. genuine

  1945. Christians,

  1946. put no

  1947. confidence

  1948. in the

  1949. flesh.

  1950. You see

  1951. this in

  1952. the last

  1953. part of

  1954. verse 3.

  1955. The flesh

  1956. represents our

  1957. unredeemed

  1958. humanness.

  1959. It represents

  1960. any work that

  1961. we can do

  1962. apart from

  1963. the working

  1964. of God

  1965. in us.

  1966. Genuine

  1967. Christians

  1968. recognize

  1969. that the

  1970. words of

  1971. Jesus in

  1972. John 6

    John 6:63

  1973. verse 63

  1974. are true.

  1975. He said,

  1976. it is the

  1977. spirit who

  1978. gives life.

  1979. The flesh

  1980. is no

  1981. help at

  1982. all.

  1983. And

  1984. agree with

  1985. Paul's

  1986. declaration in

  1987. Romans 7

    Romans 7:18

  1988. verse 18,

  1989. for I know

  1990. that nothing

  1991. good dwells

  1992. in me

  1993. that is

  1994. in

  1995. my

  1996. flesh.

  1997. Genuine

  1998. Christians

  1999. put no

  2000. confidence

  2001. in our

  2002. flesh.

  2003. We'll

  2004. explore this

  2005. idea much

  2006. further next

  2007. Lord's

  2008. day.

  2009. The

  2010. genuine

  2011. Christian

  2012. places no

  2013. confidence in

  2014. the flesh

  2015. because the

  2016. genuine

  2017. Christian knows

  2018. that they

  2019. have no

  2020. reason to

  2021. place confidence

  2022. in the

  2023. flesh.

  2024. The

  2025. genuine

  2026. Christian is

  2027. aware of

  2028. their own

  2029. sin

  2030. brokenness

  2031. apart from

  2032. the delivering

  2033. grace of

  2034. Jesus

  2035. Christ.

  2036. Galatians

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  2037. chapter 6

  2038. beginning in

  2039. verse 12.

  2040. This might

  2041. feel a little

  2042. bit familiar

  2043. to you.

  2044. As a quick

  2045. pause, I am

  2046. so thankful

  2047. for how often

  2048. the Lord

  2049. knits together

  2050. our services.

  2051. I know that

  2052. you don't have

  2053. the text for

  2054. the morning

  2055. living in

  2056. your head,

  2057. but I often

  2058. do.

  2059. I've been

  2060. preparing notes

  2061. all week.

  2062. how often

  2063. the cross

  2064. references

  2065. used,

  2066. this text,

  2067. at least a

  2068. portion of

  2069. it, maybe

  2070. more of it,

  2071. I'm not sure

  2072. now, Darrell

  2073. read this

  2074. morning.

  2075. I think it

  2076. was just

  2077. verse 14

  2078. that he

  2079. read this

  2080. morning.

  2081. Some songs

  2082. that we

  2083. sang earlier

  2084. directly speak

  2085. to this very

  2086. issue that

  2087. we're talking

  2088. about.

  2089. It's just a

  2090. glorious thing

  2091. that the

  2092. Lord orders

  2093. our time.

  2094. Even as

  2095. we're making

  2096. plans, he

  2097. plans in

  2098. and through

  2099. our planning.

  2100. So Galatians

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  2101. chapter 6,

  2102. beginning in

  2103. verse 12,

  2104. it is those

  2105. who want to

  2106. make a good

  2107. showing in

  2108. the flesh

  2109. who would

  2110. force you

  2111. to be

  2112. circumcised

  2113. and only in

  2114. order that

  2115. they may

  2116. not be

  2117. persecuted

  2118. for the

  2119. cross of

  2120. Christ.

  2121. These are

  2122. Jewish people

  2123. who wanted

  2124. to take up

  2125. Christianity

  2126. but didn't

  2127. want to leave

  2128. behind Judaism

  2129. because they

  2130. were being

  2131. persecuted

  2132. for being

  2133. Christian.

  2134. So they

  2135. still were

  2136. keeping these

  2137. outward signs

  2138. and convincing

  2139. others to

  2140. do the same.

  2141. Verse 13,

  2142. for even

  2143. those who

  2144. are circumcised

  2145. do not

  2146. themselves

  2147. keep the

  2148. law,

  2149. but they

  2150. desire to

  2151. have you

  2152. circumcised

  2153. that they

  2154. may boast

  2155. in your

  2156. flesh.

  2157. But far

  2158. be it

  2159. for me

  2160. to boast

  2161. except in

  2162. the cross

  2163. of our

  2164. Lord Jesus

  2165. Christ,

  2166. by which the

  2167. world has

  2168. been crucified

  2169. to me

  2170. and I

  2171. to the

  2172. world.

  2173. For neither

  2174. circumcision

  2175. counts for

  2176. anything

  2177. nor

  2178. uncircumcision,

  2179. but a

  2180. new

  2181. creation.

  2182. So do you

  2183. ever place

  2184. any measure

  2185. of confidence

  2186. confidence in

  2187. your flesh?

  2188. It should

  2189. not be

  2190. so.

  2191. Now if

  2192. you are in

  2193. Christ this

  2194. morning,

  2195. I hope in

  2196. looking at

  2197. these things

  2198. you have

  2199. been encouraged

  2200. that you've

  2201. been able to

  2202. say,

  2203. I do rejoice

  2204. in the

  2205. Lord.

  2206. I care to

  2207. be discerning.

  2208. I want the

  2209. true gospel to

  2210. be preached

  2211. for my good

  2212. and for the

  2213. good of

  2214. others.

  2215. I don't

  2216. think that I

  2217. can worship

  2218. God unless

  2219. by the

  2220. Spirit of

  2221. God.

  2222. I glory

  2223. in Christ

  2224. Jesus and

  2225. I put no

  2226. confidence in

  2227. the flesh.

  2228. I hope this

  2229. is massively

  2230. encouraging to

  2231. you.

  2232. Paul here

  2233. in the text

  2234. would call

  2235. you brothers,

  2236. brothers,

  2237. beloved.

  2238. It's a

  2239. wonderful thing

  2240. to be found

  2241. in Christ and

  2242. as we're

  2243. gauging out

  2244. whether or not

  2245. we are in

  2246. Christ to see

  2247. evidence that

  2248. we are in

  2249. fact in

  2250. him.

  2251. If you have

  2252. any concern

  2253. of this this

  2254. morning,

  2255. if you're

  2256. just not

  2257. sure,

  2258. let me just

  2259. invite you

  2260. to repent

  2261. and believe.

  2262. To recognize

  2263. that you have

  2264. nothing to

  2265. offer,

  2266. that's the

  2267. beauty of

  2268. the gospel,

  2269. that you

  2270. need nothing

  2271. to offer

  2272. except your

  2273. faith.

  2274. Just believe,

  2275. just believe

  2276. that Christ

  2277. came,

  2278. he lived a

  2279. life that we

  2280. could not

  2281. live,

  2282. perfect

  2283. righteousness,

  2284. he fulfilled

  2285. every requirement

  2286. of the law,

  2287. that he died

  2288. the death that

  2289. you deserve,

  2290. so that by

  2291. faith in him

  2292. you can have

  2293. his righteousness,

  2294. God will see

  2295. you,

  2296. declare you

  2297. righteous,

  2298. and that your

  2299. punishment will

  2300. be taken away

  2301. by him.

  2302. Believe that he's

  2303. resurrected,

  2304. that he's seated

  2305. at the right hand

  2306. of the Father,

  2307. that he rules

  2308. over all things,

  2309. that he has

  2310. sure promises

  2311. for you,

  2312. one day he will

  2313. return for you,

  2314. throw yourself

  2315. on the abundant

  2316. mercy of God

  2317. in Christ.

  2318. grace.

  2319. It's a wonderful

  2320. free offer of

  2321. grace that will

  2322. cost you

  2323. everything,

  2324. but it is so

  2325. worth it.

  2326. Let's pray

  2327. together.
