  1. I'm glad that you were here this morning and I'm glad to be here with you.

  2. Please take your copy of God's Word and join me in Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  3. Our text for today is Philippians chapter 3 verses 10 through 21.

    Philippians 3:10–21

  4. Before I begin reading this morning's text, I have a brief note for our guests.

  5. Many churches this morning will spend extensive time making an apologetic case for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  6. They will do so because they will be inundated with guests this morning.

  7. And the resurrection of Jesus is the linchpin to a camelline case for the Christian faith.

  8. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verse 19 and 20.

    1 Corinthians 15:19

  9. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

  10. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

  11. Without the resurrection, we have no Christianity.

  12. However, this inundation of guests is not typically the case for us.

  13. Our gatherings most regularly consist of devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

  14. So we think it best to press on in our exposition of the book of Philippians as we have arrived at a text that speaks to the sanctifying implications of the resurrection.

  15. That said, if you have found yourself here this morning, we do not believe that this is an accident and hope.

  16. If you haven't already turned from your sin and thrown yourself on the mercy of God found in the personal work of Jesus Christ, that you will do so today.

  17. If Jesus was not raised from the dead, then he was a liar and a lunatic.

  18. If he was, then he is God.

  19. And we should listen to all that he said and all that was written concerning him in the scripture.

  20. To help you believe that Jesus is God, if you don't find yourself in that position this morning,

  21. there's a little book available out in the book, Nick, called Your Verdict on the Empty Tomb.

  22. It looks like this.

  23. I think there's about a dozen of them out there and they're available for free.

  24. And I would just strongly encourage you to take one and read it.

  25. It won't take you very long to read and see if God doesn't work believing faith in you as a result.

  26. So today, Philippians chapter 3, beginning in verse 10 is our text formally for this morning.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  27. But I would like to begin by reading, starting at verse 7.

  28. Let me remind you before I do, beloved, that this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good.

  29. So we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  30. Beginning in verse 7.

  31. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  32. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord.

  33. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish,

  34. in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him,

  35. not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

  36. but that which comes through faith in Christ,

  37. the righteousness from God that depends on faith,

  38. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection

  39. and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,

  40. that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  41. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect,

  42. but I press on to make it my own because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  43. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  44. but one thing I do,

  45. forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,

  46. I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  47. Let those of us who are mature think this way,

  48. and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you.

  49. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  50. Brothers, join in imitating me

  51. and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

  52. For many of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears

  53. walk as enemies of the cross of Christ.

  54. Their end is destruction.

  55. Their God is their belly,

  56. and they glory in their shame with minds set on earthly things.

  57. But our citizenship is in heaven,

  58. and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  59. who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body

  60. by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

  61. If we are to have any hope in this world at all,

  62. it must be a gospel hope.

  63. This world is a terribly wretched and broken place.

  64. If you don't feel this to be true, you just haven't lived very long.

  65. Begin to pay attention to the world around you.

  66. Something is deeply wrong with it.

  67. I think that I feel this especially as a pastor.

  68. Much of what I do is dealing with the brokenness,

  69. the sin ravages of the world in which we live.

  70. And I find that if I'm going to have any motivation for living at all,

  71. it must be rooted in the transforming, resurrected power of Jesus Christ.

  72. My gospel hope has to outbound all of the misery that I experience around me.

  73. So I look for joy in this.

  74. This text is packed full of it,

  75. and we won't have time this morning to look at every one of these phrases.

  76. I really wish we did.

  77. I'd love to keep you here until 2 o'clock this afternoon.

  78. But there would be a mutiny, I'm quite sure.

  79. So we're going to keep the main point of this text in mind,

  80. and I may have to skip over some phrases as we do that together.

  81. But this large, this overarching hope that is out in front of us

  82. is what we are looking to today.

  83. We must have it.

  84. I will say also, as an aside, as a pastor,

  85. I look for tiny joys, right?

  86. This is the large joy.

  87. I need the large joy, the hope of the gospel.

  88. But I look for tiny joys as well.

  89. And alliteration brings me a tiny bit of joy.

  90. And so the outline in advance of our study is as follows.

  91. It's five points, and they alliterate.

  92. Number one, new motivation.

  93. Number two, new memory.

  94. Number three, new mindset.

  95. Number four, new mentors.

  96. And number five, new mediator.

  97. First, let's look at a new motivation.

  98. We can see this in verses 10 and 11.

  99. And we'll spend the majority of our time here

  100. with the other points supporting and building on this one.

  101. We see Paul say in verse 10,

  102. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection

  103. and may share his sufferings,

  104. becoming like him in his death.

  105. Now, he has just begun to address

  106. with these Philippian believers

  107. a heresy that was going around in their day.

  108. And it was common.

  109. He wrote about it to other churches as well.

  110. And we know these people, these teachers,

  111. as the Judaizers.

  112. They were saying, yes, faith in Christ is good,

  113. but you must add to that faith the law.

  114. You must be circumcised specifically

  115. in order to be found righteous before God.

  116. They were suggesting that salvation comes by works.

  117. And Paul does not mince words about this.

  118. He is clear to say, no, no.

  119. Righteousness comes by faith.

  120. And so he uses himself as an example.

  121. He says, if anybody should have any confidence

  122. in the flesh at all, I should.

  123. He uses himself.

  124. I, the Jew of Jews, should have confidence in the flesh.

  125. Who are these men to tell you to have confidence in the flesh?

  126. But then he says that he counts all of that gain,

  127. all the things that would have been

  128. in that Judaic system of benefit to him as loss.

  129. He puts it in a loss column.

  130. And what he puts in the gain column is Christ.

  131. Paul is willing to lose all things.

  132. He now counts them as loss.

  133. Why?

  134. Verse 7 tells us, for the sake of Christ.

  135. And verse 8 tells us, because of the surpassing worth

  136. of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord.

  137. And, in verse 8, in order that I may gain Christ.

  138. Paul wrote in Philippians chapter 1 and verse 21,

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  139. for to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

  140. Because?

  141. More.

  142. Christ.

  143. Here in verse 10, he says,

  144. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection,

  145. and may share his sufferings,

  146. becoming like him in his death,

  147. identified with him in his death.

  148. All of Paul's spiritual fervor has a new motivation.

  149. Christ himself.

  150. And it has a new aim.

  151. He says in verse 11,

  152. that by any means possible,

  153. I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  154. Let's look first at the first part of this verse,

  155. that by any means possible,

  156. I may attain,

  157. or you can think,

  158. arrive at,

  159. the resurrection from the dead.

  160. James Montgomery Boyce,

  161. this is on your bulletin this morning,

  162. said of this text,

  163. Paul wanted to know Jesus in the truest

  164. biblical sense,

  165. personally and experientially.

  166. And he wanted this to affect his day-to-day living.

  167. And so here we find the doctrine of progressive sanctification.

  168. Those who are in Christ will persevere in holiness and be preserved to the end.

  169. If you are saved,

  170. you will grow in Christlikeness until the end,

  171. until your life is over or until the Lord returns.

  172. We are saved by grace alone,

  173. through faith alone,

  174. in Christ alone.

  175. And we are kept by grace alone,

  176. through faith alone,

  177. in Christ alone.

  178. But this saving and this keeping

  179. will be evidenced in our living.

  180. How, after all,

  181. are we to know that we are saved?

  182. How can you know that you are saved?

  183. Should we tie our confidence

  184. to a particular pastor

  185. or ministry

  186. or event?

  187. What does the Bible have to say

  188. about this?

  189. Does it tell us to know that we are in Christ

  190. because we

  191. prayed a prayer

  192. or raised a hand

  193. or walked an aisle?

  194. No.

  195. A thousand times no.

  196. The scripture does not say this.

  197. Although many in our day

  198. do.

  199. Listen to the teaching

  200. of the apostles.

  201. John in 1 John chapter 5.

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  202. Everyone who believes

  203. that Jesus is the Christ

  204. has been born of God.

  205. And everyone who loves the Father

  206. loves whoever has been born

  207. of Him.

  208. So if you're in Christ,

  209. you're going to love the church.

  210. By this we know

  211. that we love the children of God

  212. when we love God

  213. and obey

  214. His commandments.

  215. For this is the love of God

  216. that we keep

  217. His commandments.

  218. And His commandments

  219. are not

  220. burdensome.

  221. God, by the power of His Spirit,

  222. makes us new creations.

  223. Sets us on a different trajectory.

  224. Not a trajectory of rebellion

  225. against His good commands,

  226. but one of grateful obedience

  227. to them.

  228. Peter,

  229. the Apostle Peter,

  230. after a list of divine qualities

  231. found in 2 Peter chapter 1,

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  232. says in verse 10,

  233. Therefore,

  234. brothers,

  235. be all the more diligent

  236. to confirm

  237. your calling and election.

  238. For if you practice

  239. these qualities,

  240. you will never

  241. fall.

  242. So he's saying,

  243. look at your life.

  244. Examine it.

  245. Be sure that it's exemplifying

  246. these things.

  247. Be diligent

  248. in this practice

  249. to confirm

  250. your calling and election.

  251. And Paul in Philippians chapter 2,

    Philippians 2:12

  252. verse 12 and 13,

  253. says,

  254. Therefore, my beloved,

  255. as you have always obeyed,

  256. so now,

  257. not only as in my presence,

  258. but much more in my absence,

  259. work out your own salvation

  260. with fear

  261. and trembling.

  262. For it is God

  263. who works in you

  264. both to will

  265. and to work

  266. for His good pleasure.

  267. So if God is in you,

  268. these efforts to obey

  269. will be rewarded

  270. with obedience.

  271. We'll be able to see that,

  272. yes, in fact,

  273. I am growing in grace.

  274. And finally,

  275. if you just say,

  276. well, those are the apostles,

  277. I hope you don't do that

  278. with the scripture,

  279. but just in case you do,

  280. some people only want

  281. to listen to red letters,

  282. so here they are.

  283. Jesus in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7:17

  284. verse 17 and 18,

  285. says,

  286. So every healthy tree

  287. bears good fruit,

  288. but the diseased tree

  289. bears bad fruit.

  290. A healthy tree

  291. cannot bear bad fruit,

  292. nor can a diseased tree

  293. bear good fruit.

  294. And in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  295. and verse 15,

  296. he says,

  297. If you love me,

  298. you will keep

  299. my commandments.

  300. Now, we must be so careful

  301. at this point.

  302. No one is suggesting

  303. that we are saved

  304. by our works.

  305. None of us are perfect.

  306. I have a confidence

  307. that I am redeemed.

  308. I can see that God

  309. works mightily in my life,

  310. but I am far

  311. from perfect.

  312. But the trajectory

  313. of my life,

  314. the graph,

  315. if I were able to graph

  316. holiness day to day,

  317. would trend

  318. toward holiness.

  319. It's got its ups

  320. and it's got its downs,

  321. but it would trend

  322. toward holiness.

  323. We cannot be saved

  324. by our works.

  325. We will never be good enough

  326. to meet God's standard

  327. because God's standard

  328. is perfection.

  329. Every one of us,

  330. every person

  331. who has ever lived

  332. has fallen short

  333. of perfection.

  334. We are saved

  335. by grace alone,

  336. through faith alone,

  337. in Christ alone.

  338. And any holiness

  339. we possess

  340. is because of God.

  341. It's divine

  342. because we are kept

  343. by grace alone,

  344. through faith alone,

  345. in Christ alone.

  346. Let's not lose sight

  347. as Paul's going to talk

  348. about attaining

  349. and striving

  350. that he stated

  351. in Philippians 3,

    Philippians 3:9

  352. verse 9,

  353. which I read

  354. as part of the intro

  355. to today's text,

  356. that he would be found

  357. in Christ,

  358. not having a righteousness

  359. of his own

  360. that comes from the law,

  361. but that which comes

  362. through faith

  363. in Christ,

  364. the righteousness

  365. from God

  366. that depends

  367. on faith.

  368. Reese referenced earlier,

  369. Martin,

  370. last week,

  371. Martin Luther

  372. called this

  373. an alien righteousness,

  374. a righteousness

  375. from outside

  376. given to us

  377. by God.

  378. We are saved

  379. by grace alone,

  380. through faith alone,

  381. in Christ alone,

  382. and we are kept

  383. by grace alone,

  384. through faith alone,

  385. in Christ alone,

  386. but this saving

  387. and this keeping

  388. will be evidenced

  389. in our living.

  390. This is what Paul

  391. is talking about.

  392. Showing himself

  393. to be in Christ

  394. to the very end.

  395. And, beloved,

  396. the way of Christ

  397. is the way of suffering.

  398. We will give up

  399. every advantage

  400. that this world

  401. has to offer

  402. for the sake

  403. of Christ

  404. in order to know

  405. him

  406. and be known

  407. by him.

  408. Why would someone

  409. do

  410. such a thing?

  411. It's divine.

  412. It's supernatural.

  413. God gives us

  414. a new

  415. motivation.

  416. He

  417. recreates us

  418. as we

  419. were meant

  420. to be.

  421. To be in fellowship

  422. with him

  423. in this life

  424. and

  425. forevermore.

  426. this is so

  427. important

  428. to understand

  429. for your Christian

  430. living.

  431. So that,

  432. by any means

  433. possible,

  434. I may attain

  435. the resurrection

  436. of the dead.

  437. One day,

  438. those who are in Christ

  439. will have

  440. resurrection

  441. bodies.

  442. We are saved,

  443. soul and body.

  444. And the work

  445. of redemption

  446. is not fully complete

  447. until we are

  448. transformed

  449. transformed to be

  450. like Christ.

  451. Embodied.

  452. The embodied

  453. Christ

  454. will be like

  455. him with

  456. resurrection

  457. bodies.

  458. In Romans

    Romans 8:23

  459. chapter 8,

  460. verse 23

  461. and 24,

  462. Paul stated

  463. that we

  464. wait eagerly

  465. for the redemption

  466. of our bodies.

  467. And he adds,

  468. for in this

  469. hope

  470. we were saved.

  471. saved.

  472. This is also

  473. called

  474. glorification.

  475. We run

  476. across those

  477. texts from

  478. time to

  479. time.

  480. Paul wrote

  481. further in

  482. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  483. 8,

  484. this is

  485. verse 30,

  486. and those

  487. whom he

  488. predestined

  489. he also

  490. called.

  491. Those whom

  492. he called

  493. he also

  494. justified,

  495. and those

  496. whom he

  497. justified

  498. he also

  499. glorified.

  500. Because

  501. you're saved,

  502. if you're

  503. in Christ,

  504. there's a

  505. future

  506. guarantee

  507. that you

  508. will have

  509. a resurrected

  510. body.

  511. You will

  512. be glorified,

  513. set free

  514. from the

  515. bondage of

  516. sin

  517. forever.

  518. Wayne

  519. Grudeman's

  520. seminal

  521. work,

  522. Systematic

  523. Theology,

  524. defines

  525. glorification

  526. this way.

  527. Glorification

  528. is the

  529. final step

  530. in the

  531. application

  532. of redemption.

  533. It will

  534. happen when

  535. Christ returns

  536. and raises

  537. from the

  538. dead the

  539. bodies of

  540. all believers

  541. for all

  542. time who

  543. have died,

  544. and reunites

  545. them with

  546. their souls,

  547. and changes

  548. the bodies

  549. of all

  550. believers

  551. who remain

  552. alive,

  553. thereby giving

  554. all believers

  555. at the same

  556. time perfect

  557. resurrection

  558. bodies like

  559. his own.

  560. So you see,

  561. glorification is

  562. Paul's new

  563. motivation.

  564. It's the

  565. thing that he

  566. is looking

  567. forward to,

  568. this wonderful

  569. forever state

  570. of freedom

  571. from the

  572. death of

  573. sin in the

  574. presence of

  575. our Savior.

  576. We will

  577. experience Christ

  578. more fully

  579. than we

  580. could possibly

  581. experience

  582. him here

  583. and now

  584. because we

  585. will be

  586. freed from

  587. sin forever.

  588. The

  589. resurrection of

  590. Jesus Christ

  591. guaranteed for

  592. all who are

  593. in Christ a

  594. resurrection and

  595. future hope.

  596. What a

  597. wonderful truth.

  598. I will close

  599. this point with

  600. one further

  601. scripture reading

  602. which makes

  603. the point a

  604. bit further.

  605. Romans chapter

    Romans 6:1–6

  606. 6 verses 1

  607. through 6.

  608. Paul says,

  609. What shall we

  610. say then?

  611. Are we to

  612. continue in

  613. sin that

  614. grace may

  615. abound?

  616. By no

  617. means.

  618. How can

  619. we who

  620. died to

  621. sin still

  622. live in

  623. it?

  624. Do you

  625. not know

  626. that all

  627. of us who

  628. have been

  629. baptized into

  630. Christ Jesus

  631. were baptized

  632. into his

  633. death?

  634. We were

  635. buried

  636. therefore with

  637. him by

  638. baptism into

  639. death in

  640. order that

  641. just as

  642. Christ was

  643. raised from

  644. the dead by

  645. the glory of

  646. the Father we

  647. too might

  648. walk in

  649. newness of

  650. life.

  651. For if we

  652. have been

  653. united with

  654. him in a

  655. death like

  656. his we

  657. shall certainly

  658. be united

  659. with him in

  660. a resurrection

  661. like his.

  662. We know

  663. that our old

  664. self was

  665. crucified with

  666. him in

  667. order that

  668. the body

  669. of sin

  670. might be

  671. brought to

  672. nothing so

  673. that we

  674. would no

  675. longer be

  676. enslaved to

  677. sin.

  678. If you

  679. are in

  680. Christ the

  681. resurrection of

  682. Christ is a

  683. foundation for

  684. a new

  685. motivation.

  686. Secondly,

  687. new memory.

  688. We see this in

  689. verses 12

  690. through 14.

  691. Paul says

  692. not that I've

  693. already obtained

  694. this or I'm

  695. already perfect.

  696. Right?

  697. He's being very

  698. clear.

  699. We haven't

  700. reached sinlessness.

  701. He's saying as

  702. an apostle I've

  703. not reached

  704. sinlessness but I

  705. press on to

  706. make it my

  707. own because

  708. Christ Jesus

  709. has made me

  710. his own.

  711. Right?

  712. grateful

  713. obedience.

  714. A response

  715. to the grace

  716. of God to

  717. him in

  718. Christ.

  719. Verse 13.

  720. Brothers, I do

  721. not consider

  722. that I've

  723. made it my

  724. own but

  725. one thing

  726. I do

  727. forgetting

  728. what lies

  729. behind and

  730. straining

  731. forward to

  732. what lies

  733. ahead.

  734. I press

  735. on toward

  736. the goal

  737. for the

  738. prize of

  739. the upward

  740. call of

  741. God in

  742. Christ Jesus.

  743. Paul's

  744. sanctification

  745. depends on

  746. a reorientation

  747. of his

  748. memory.

  749. You see that

  750. he's going to

  751. apply a

  752. great deal

  753. of effort.

  754. He's

  755. forgetting and

  756. he's straining

  757. and he's

  758. pressing towards

  759. this goal.

  760. The upward

  761. call of God

  762. in Christ

  763. Jesus.

  764. The

  765. resurrection

  766. of his

  767. body.

  768. He states

  769. that in his

  770. effort to

  771. attain the

  772. resurrection

  773. from the

  774. dead,

  775. he is

  776. forgetting

  777. what lies

  778. behind.

  779. What's he

  780. referring to

  781. there?

  782. I think he

  783. means all

  784. the things

  785. that he

  786. thought were

  787. his game

  788. that he

  789. has now

  790. countered at

  791. his loss

  792. right back

  793. in verses

  794. five through

  795. six of the

  796. chapter.

  797. I think he's

  798. referring to

  799. all of those

  800. things but I

  801. also think

  802. that he is

  803. referring more

  804. broadly to

  805. a sin

  806. because he

  807. is forgetting.

  808. He hasn't

  809. just forgotten

  810. but it says

  811. forgetting and

  812. this is one of

  813. those wonderful

  814. places where

  815. the English

  816. nails it

  817. right on

  818. the head.

  819. The original

  820. Greek word

  821. for this

  822. is in the

  823. present tense

  824. which means

  825. it's active

  826. and it's

  827. incomplete.

  828. So he's

  829. continually

  830. forgetting.

  831. He's forgetting

  832. and he's

  833. forgetting

  834. and he's

  835. forgetting

  836. and he's

  837. forgetting

  838. as he's

  839. straining

  840. and pressing.

  841. The power

  842. of the gospel

  843. has set us

  844. free from

  845. bondage to

  846. present and

  847. future sin

  848. and it has

  849. set us free

  850. from the guilt

  851. of past

  852. sin.

  853. Remember that

  854. Paul was a

  855. persecutor of

  856. the church.

  857. He mentions

  858. this in

  859. verse 6.

  860. He stood

  861. over the

  862. execution of

  863. Stephen the

  864. very first

  865. Christian

  866. martyr.

  867. A highly

  868. psychologized

  869. version of

  870. Christianity

  871. would give

  872. Paul a

  873. free pass

  874. to be

  875. forlorn

  876. and

  877. listness.

  878. Would just

  879. say like

  880. oh we get

  881. it.

  882. You were

  883. that guy

  884. that put

  885. Stephen to

  886. death.

  887. You got a

  888. lot of

  889. baggage you're

  890. carrying around

  891. with us.

  892. We're not

  893. going to

  894. expect much

  895. of you.

  896. But he

  897. says he's

  898. forgetting what

  899. lies behind

  900. and straining

  901. forward to

  902. what lies

  903. ahead.

  904. Now as

  905. Paul's stating

  906. that he's

  907. forgotten

  908. everything as

  909. as he's had

  910. a brain

  911. wipe on

  912. his encounter

  913. with Christ

  914. he got his

  915. brain zipped

  916. out.

  917. Absolutely

  918. not.

  919. He's still

  920. a human

  921. man who

  922. had memories.

  923. We're going

  924. to have

  925. memories but

  926. I suggest

  927. that the

  928. prominent

  929. thought of

  930. the past

  931. was what

  932. Christ had

  933. done to

  934. deliver him

  935. from his

  936. sin.

  937. That as

  938. he considered

  939. his past

  940. when he

  941. calls himself

  942. the worst

  943. of sinners

  944. why?

  945. So that

  946. God could

  947. show his

  948. great mercy

  949. in Christ.

  950. As he

  951. thought about

  952. his past

  953. what he

  954. remembers is

  955. what Christ

  956. did for

  957. him.

  958. How unworthy

  959. he is but

  960. what Christ

  961. has done.

  962. Which is why

  963. I'm suggesting

  964. that Paul

  965. had a

  966. new

  967. memory.

  968. He knew

  969. that the

  970. past had

  971. no bearing

  972. on his

  973. future

  974. because Jesus

  975. had paid

  976. the penalty

  977. for sin

  978. and confirmed

  979. his redemption

  980. by being

  981. raised

  982. from the

  983. dead.

  984. Beloved,

  985. I wonder

  986. how many

  987. of you

  988. live in

  989. the past

  990. would suggest

  991. in some

  992. way that

  993. Jesus'

  994. death was

  995. not enough

  996. for your

  997. sin.

  998. That he

  999. needs to

  1000. come back

  1001. down from

  1002. heaven and

  1003. get back

  1004. up on the

  1005. cross to

  1006. complete that

  1007. work.

  1008. That you

  1009. fail functionally

  1010. to believe

  1011. that when

  1012. Jesus says

  1013. it is

  1014. finished,

  1015. it really

  1016. is

  1017. finished.

  1018. Your past

  1019. sin has

  1020. been expunged

  1021. as has

  1022. your present

  1023. and your

  1024. future.

  1025. Jesus died

  1026. for you.

  1027. He died

  1028. for every

  1029. sin that

  1030. you have

  1031. ever or

  1032. will ever

  1033. commit.

  1034. Praise be

  1035. to God.

  1036. When we

  1037. think about

  1038. the past,

  1039. our minds

  1040. ought to be

  1041. set on what

  1042. Jesus has

  1043. done.

  1044. And,

  1045. thirdly,

  1046. we should

  1047. have a new

  1048. mindset.

  1049. This is

  1050. related, I

  1051. understand.

  1052. One maybe

  1053. is the

  1054. negative, the

  1055. other the

  1056. positive.

  1057. Verses 15

  1058. and 16,

  1059. he says,

  1060. let those

  1061. of us who

  1062. are mature

  1063. think this

  1064. way.

  1065. Which way

  1066. is he

  1067. talking about?

  1068. Right?

  1069. This forgetting

  1070. what lies

  1071. behind and

  1072. straining

  1073. forward to

  1074. what lies

  1075. ahead.

  1076. And he

  1077. says that

  1078. this is a

  1079. mark of

  1080. Christian

  1081. maturity.

  1082. The

  1083. mature

  1084. think this

  1085. way.

  1086. A

  1087. functionally

  1088. active belief

  1089. in the

  1090. gospel of

  1091. Jesus Christ

  1092. will evidence

  1093. itself in

  1094. the day

  1095. to day

  1096. of one

  1097. who is

  1098. growing in

  1099. their

  1100. understanding

  1101. of all

  1102. that the

  1103. gospel means

  1104. for them.

  1105. It affects

  1106. every iota

  1107. of our

  1108. life.

  1109. I just got a

  1110. text message and

  1111. flipped it away and

1112. lost my place in my

  1113. notes.

  1114. So give me a

  1115. second.

  1116. UPS just

  1117. text me.

  1118. So thanks

  1119. UPS.

  1120. my package

  1121. arrived.

  1122. You guys will

  1123. all be glad to

  1124. hear that.

  1125. Man, I

  1126. really lost.

  1127. Oh, here we

  1128. are.

  1129. Okay, here we

  1130. go.

  1131. Good.

  1132. Hey, back

  1133. on track.

  1134. Let me say

  1135. that again because

  1136. I lost my

  1137. mindset.

  1138. A functionally

  1139. active belief in

  1140. the gospel of

  1141. Jesus Christ will

  1142. evident itself in

  1143. the day-to-day of

  1144. one who is

  1145. growing in their

  1146. understanding of

  1147. all that the

  1148. gospel means for

  1149. them.

  1150. It'll inform

  1151. everything, right?

  1152. This ought to be

  1153. our mindset.

  1154. Our knee-jerk

  1155. reaction to our

  1156. sin as we press

  1157. on toward the

  1158. goal for the

  1159. prize of the

  1160. upward call of

  1161. God in Christ

  1162. Jesus should be

  1163. repentance and

  1164. faith, right?

  1165. Forgetting and

  1166. straining.

  1167. Often with

  1168. counselees, I use

  1169. an example of

  1170. running a race,

  1171. right?

  1172. Paul uses this

  1173. kind of language.

  1174. And we're running

1175. a race and sin in

  1176. our life causes us

  1177. to stumble and we

  1178. fall, right?

  1179. We skin up our

  1180. knees, look at the

  1181. children sometimes,

  1182. their noses, right?

  1183. They don't catch

  1184. themselves that way.

  1185. We're just all

  1186. shredded by the

  1187. texture of the

  1188. track.

  1189. And instead of

  1190. getting up and

  1191. continuing to run

  1192. because the race

  1193. has been assured,

  1194. right?

  1195. We will finish

  1196. the race.

  1197. We sit on the

  1198. track and we

  1199. cry.

  1200. Oh, woe is

  1201. me.

  1202. I fell down.

  1203. Get up and run.

  1204. That's what I say.

  1205. Yes, you fell.

  1206. Yes, you fell.

  1207. Recognize that you

  1208. fell.

  1209. Repent and

  1210. believe.

  1211. Forget and

  1212. strain forward.

  1213. You may be

  1214. familiar with this

  1215. quote from

  1216. Pastor John

  1217. Piper, but I

  1218. think it's so

  1219. good at this

  1220. point.

  1221. He says, I

  1222. hear so many

  1223. Christians murmuring

  1224. about their

  1225. imperfections and

  1226. their failures and

  1227. their addictions and

  1228. their shortcomings,

  1229. and I see so

  1230. little war.

  1231. Murmur,

  1232. murmur,

  1233. murmur.

  1234. Why am I this

  1235. way?

  1236. Make war.

  1237. If you wonder

  1238. how to make

  1239. war go to

  1240. the manual,

  1241. don't just

  1242. bellyache about

  1243. your failures.

  1244. Make war.

  1245. That's what Paul

  1246. is talking about

  1247. here.

  1248. Pressing on,

  1249. putting behind,

  1250. and straining

  1251. forward.

  1252. It should be the

  1253. knee-jerk reaction.

  1254. And a lot of

  1255. people will ask

  1256. me, but aren't

  1257. we supposed to

  1258. feel something

  1259. when we sin?

  1260. I'd say, yes,

  1261. absolutely you

  1262. should.

  1263. Well, how much

  1264. and for how

  1265. long?

  1266. I would say

  1267. only as much

  1268. as it takes to

  1269. get you back to

  1270. the cross of

  1271. Christ.

  1272. Let that sorrow

  1273. drive you to the

  1274. cross of Christ.

  1275. Forget.

  1276. Remember what

  1277. he has done and

  1278. press on.

  1279. How do we make

  1280. war?

  1281. By having this

  1282. mindset.

  1283. Paul wrote in

  1284. Romans chapter 12

    Romans 12:2

  1285. verse 2.

  1286. Do not be

  1287. conformed to

  1288. this world,

  1289. but be

  1290. transformed by

  1291. the renewal

  1292. of your mind.

  1293. This ought to

  1294. be the way we

  1295. think.

  1296. The mature

  1297. will think

  1298. in this way.

  1299. And Paul is

  1300. so sure of

  1301. the importance

  1302. of this

  1303. mindset that

  1304. he encourages

  1305. the immature

  1306. that God

  1307. will mature

  1308. them.

  1309. He's going

  1310. to build

  1311. you so that

  1312. you'll think

  1313. in this way.

  1314. To stay

  1315. this course.

  1316. And he

  1317. says,

  1318. only let

  1319. us hold

  1320. true to

  1321. what we

  1322. have

  1323. attained.

  1324. He's saying,

  1325. but you have

  1326. attained some

  1327. maturity.

  1328. So continue to

  1329. walk in

  1330. that.

  1331. If we're going

  1332. to do this

  1333. well,

  1334. fourthly,

  1335. we need new

  1336. mentors.

  1337. Verses 17

  1338. through 19.

  1339. Paul says,

  1340. brothers,

  1341. join in

  1342. imitating

  1343. me and

  1344. keep your

  1345. eyes on

  1346. those who

  1347. walk

  1348. according to

  1349. the example

  1350. you have

  1351. in us.

  1352. God created

  1353. us for

  1354. fellowship.

  1355. We are

  1356. easily

  1357. influenced

  1358. and need

  1359. good

  1360. influences

  1361. in our

  1362. lives.

  1363. Just think

  1364. for a moment

  1365. about how

  1366. easily

  1367. influenced

  1368. you are.

  1369. A simple

  1370. matter,

  1371. I have a

  1372. brother-in-law

  1373. who's

  1374. British.

  1375. And I

  1376. have no

  1377. part of

  1378. me,

  1379. I mean,

  1380. maybe

  1381. somewhere in

  1382. my,

  1383. like,

  1384. generations

  1385. ago past

  1386. was British,

  1387. but if I

  1388. spend a bit

  1389. of time

  1390. around him,

  1391. I start

  1392. to use

  1393. words I

  1394. don't use

  1395. normally.

  1396. If you

  1397. ever have

  1398. me call

  1399. you mate,

  1400. it's probably

  1401. because I've

  1402. been hanging

  1403. out with

  1404. my brother-in-law

  1405. and you can

  1406. just go,

  1407. yeah,

  1408. okay,

  1409. right?

  1410. We pick

  1411. up things

  1412. from people.

  1413. So if we're

  1414. going to follow

  1415. after Christ

  1416. this way,

  1417. if we're

  1418. going to

  1419. attain this

  1420. resurrection

  1421. from the

  1422. dead,

  1423. we're going

  1424. to need

  1425. good

  1426. influence

  1427. in our

  1428. lives.

  1429. Paul is

  1430. not specific

  1431. about the

  1432. good example,

  1433. but we can

  1434. infer that the

  1435. example you

  1436. have in us

  1437. is found in

  1438. the pressing

  1439. on toward

  1440. the goal

  1441. for the prize

  1442. of the

  1443. upper call

  1444. of God

  1445. in Christ

  1446. Jesus.

  1447. Surround

  1448. yourself by

  1449. people doing

  1450. that,

  1451. right?

  1452. Straining

  1453. forward,

  1454. right?

  1455. Pressing for

  1456. holiness,

  1457. right?

  1458. Looking to

  1459. please the

  1460. Lord.

  1461. God

  1462. we can

  1463. also

  1464. infer

  1465. that's

  1466. the

  1467. opposite

  1468. of

  1469. the

  1470. bad

  1471. example

  1472. that

  1473. he

  1474. lists

  1475. out

  1476. in

  1477. some

  1478. detail

  1479. here.

  1480. People

  1481. whose

  1482. end is

  1483. destruction.

  1484. Their God

  1485. is their

  1486. belly,

  1487. meaning they

  1488. serve all

  1489. of their

  1490. appetites,

  1491. and he

  1492. doesn't just

  1493. mean food

  1494. appetites,

  1495. but all of

  1496. the lusts

  1497. of the

  1498. world,

  1499. and they

  1500. glory,

  1501. they're proud

  1502. in things

  1503. that ought

  1504. to be

  1505. to their

  1506. shame.

  1507. their

  1508. minds

  1509. are set

  1510. on

  1511. earthly

  1512. things,

  1513. right?

  1514. They're

  1515. concerned

  1516. about

  1517. the

  1518. temporal,

  1519. they're

  1520. concerned

  1521. about

  1522. the

  1523. now,

  1524. instead

  1525. of being

  1526. concerned

  1527. about

  1528. the

  1529. eternal.

  1530. You

  1531. need to

  1532. get

  1533. yourself

  1534. around

  1535. people

  1536. who are

  1537. thinking

  1538. heavenward,

  1539. always

  1540. thinking,

  1541. how is

  1542. this

  1543. life

  1544. best

  1545. spent

  1546. for

  1547. that

  1548. life,

  1549. that

  1550. forever

  1551. life?

  1552. And I

  1553. can tell

  1554. you now

  1555. that if

  1556. you live

  1557. this way

  1558. and you

  1559. think

  1560. in this

  1561. way,

  1562. you're

  1563. going to

  1564. be laying

  1565. down

  1566. your

  1567. life,

  1568. you're

  1569. going to

  1570. be

  1571. suffering

  1572. the

  1573. loss

  1574. of

  1575. all

  1576. things,

  1577. you

  1578. are

  1579. going

  1580. to

  1581. be

  1582. uncomfortable

  1583. in

  1584. this

  1585. world

  1586. for

  1587. the

  1588. sake

  1589. of

  1590. the

  1591. next.

  1592. And Paul

  1593. exhorts us

  1594. to be

  1595. cautious

  1596. about

  1597. these

  1598. kind

  1599. of

  1600. people,

  1601. right?

  1602. Mind set

  1603. on

  1604. earthly

  1605. things,

  1606. right?

  1607. We're

  1608. to avoid

  1609. them,

  1610. but I

  1611. want

  1612. to

  1613. note

  1614. that

  1615. he

  1616. does

  1617. it

  1618. with

  1619. heartbreak.

  1620. He's

  1621. not just

  1622. dismissive

  1623. to

  1624. them,

  1625. but he

  1626. does it

  1627. with

  1628. heartbreak.

  1629. He says

  1630. with

  1631. tears

  1632. they

  1633. walk

  1634. as

  1635. enemies

  1636. of the

  1637. cross

  1638. of

  1639. Christ.

  1640. Fifth

  1641. and

  1642. lastly,

  1643. we

  1644. need

  1645. and in

  1646. Christ

  1647. we

  1648. have

  1649. a

  1650. new

  1651. mediator.

  1652. The

  1653. last

  1654. two

  1655. verses

  1656. of our

  1657. text.

  1658. But our

  1659. citizenship,

  1660. we're not

  1661. those who

  1662. are going

  1663. to be

  1664. destroyed.

  1665. Our

  1666. end

  1667. is not

  1668. destruction.

  1669. Our

  1670. citizenship

  1671. is in

  1672. heaven,

  1673. and from

  1674. it we

  1675. await

  1676. a

  1677. Savior,

  1678. the

  1679. Lord

  1680. Jesus

  1681. Christ.

  1682. We

  1683. will

  1684. transform

  1685. our

  1686. lowly

  1687. body

  1688. to be

  1689. like

  1690. his

  1691. glorious

  1692. body

  1693. by the

  1694. power

  1695. that

  1696. enables

  1697. him

  1698. even

  1699. to

  1700. subject

  1701. all

  1702. things

  1703. to

  1704. himself.

  1705. We

  1706. have a

  1707. resurrected

  1708. Savior,

  1709. the Lord

  1710. Jesus

  1711. Christ.

  1712. He

  1713. is

  1714. ascended

  1715. to the

  1716. right

  1717. hand

  1718. of

  1719. God

  1720. the

  1721. Father

  1722. where

  1723. he

  1724. rules

  1725. over

  1726. all

  1727. things.

  1728. Right?

  1729. Paul

  1730. mentions

  1731. that here

  1732. in

  1733. verse

  1734. 21,

  1735. by the

  1736. power

  1737. that

  1738. enables

  1739. him

  1740. even

  1741. to

  1742. subject

  1743. all

  1744. things

  1745. to

  1746. himself.

  1747. !

  1748. Or as

  1749. our

  1750. catechism

  1751. question

  1752. this

  1753. morning

  1754. said,

  1755. interceding

  1756. for us.

  1757. God

  1758. the

  1759. Father

  1760. is

  1761. pleased

  1762. with

  1763. us

  1764. if

  1765. we

  1766. are

  1767. in

  1768. Christ.

  1769. Further,

  1770. he

  1771. has

  1772. given

  1773. us

  1774. his

  1775. good

  1776. word

  1777. and

  1778. he

  1779. has

  1780. sent

  1781. us

  1782. his

  1783. spirit.

  1784. We

  1785. have

  1786. the

  1787. word

  1788. of

  1789. Christ

  1790. to

  1791. lead

  1792. us

  1793. in

  1794. the

  1795. truth

  1796. and

  1797. empower

  1798. us

  1799. in

  1800. holiness.

  1801. What

  1802. a

  1803. confidence

  1804. we

  1805. should

  1806. have

  1807. because

  1808. Jesus

  1809. is

  1810. alive.

  1811. One

  1812. wonderful

  1813. day

  1814. he

  1815. will

  1816. return

  1817. for

  1818. the

  1819. citizens

  1820. of

  1821. his

  1822. kingdom

  1823. and

  1824. will

  1825. transform

  1826. our

  1827. lowly

  1828. bodies

  1829. to be

  1830. like

  1831. his

  1832. glorious

  1833. body.

  1834. So let

  1835. me ask

  1836. you in

  1837. closing

  1838. this

  1839. Easter

  1840. Sunday

  1841. do

  1842. you

  1843. have

  1844. new

  1845. motivation

  1846. new

  1847. memory

  1848. new

  1849. mindset

  1850. new

  1851. mentors

  1852. and a

  1853. new

  1854. mediator?

  1855. Do

  1856. you have

  1857. future

  1858. hope

  1859. in the

  1860. resurrection

  1861. of your

  1862. body?

  1863. Do

  1864. you have

  1865. hope

  1866. in this

  1867. life

  1868. and

  1869. the

  1870. life

  1871. to

  1872. come?

  1873. You

  1874. can

  1875. because

  1876. Jesus

  1877. is

  1878. alive.

  1879. Let's

  1880. pray

  1881. together.
