  1. All right, please take your copy of God's Word and turn with me to Philippians chapter 4.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. It just reminded me, and I just thought it would be worth mentioning this morning as we find ourselves in a kind of a troubled age as it concerns Christianity,

  4. that today is the anniversary of the Diet of Worms, where Luther stood trial and was required to recant all of the writing that he had done,

  5. which included the 95 Theses, but also much more that he had written about biblical Christianity and the kind of the offense to that that Rome was perpetrating.

  6. And he famously said,

  7. My conscience is held captive to the Word of God.

  8. Here I stand.

  9. I could do no other.

  10. But you may not realize, I mean, we certainly live in a day where boldness is necessary,

  11. and sometimes people want to point to Luther as an example of brashness.

  12. And I don't think Luther was that at all.

  13. In fact, before he made that statement,

  14. My conscience is held captive to the Word of God.

  15. Here I stand.

  16. I can do no other.

  17. He asked,

  18. May I please have some more time to consider?

  19. And that gets left out of history altogether.

  20. He was a humble man,

  21. and I think even timid in some respect,

  22. but when pressed to the point, right,

  23. he said,

  24. Oh, no,

  25. we must listen to God's Word.

  26. So let that encourage us as we open God's Word together this morning.

  27. You know, it is altogether possible to understand the gospel for the salvation of your soul,

  28. which is its primary purpose, right?

  29. That you would be saved from the judgment to come,

  30. but to miss the point that the gospel has implications for the way that you think and feel and act today.

  31. We flee to Christ to be saved from hell,

  32. and we flee to Christ to be saved from sin,

  33. or at least we should.

  34. Having been saved from sin,

  35. we ought to also want to live holy lives.

  36. We have much opportunity as a church of the living God

  37. to make him known in the world

  38. through the careful application of the gospel

  39. to the daily struggles of this life.

  40. The gospel speaks to the every day.

  41. Of course, doing this,

  42. putting God on display in this way,

  43. does not preclude gospel proclamation.

  44. We must proclaim the good news of Jesus,

  45. but it most definitely should accompany it.

  46. Each of us have and will likely experience some measure of anxiety in this life.

  47. Anxiety is reportedly on the rise in our society in massive ways.

  48. You can just imagine the pandemic and what it may have brought out in many people.

  49. You yourself may have experienced this or seen this in people that you know and love.

  50. Some of us have a greater propensity toward anxiety than others,

  51. and I don't want to be insensitive this morning to the fact that there are some anxiety disorders.

  52. There are some people who have a medical propensity towards anxiety,

  53. but most of us are experiencing anxiety in ways that are not medical but spiritual.

  54. It's inevitable that fallen people living in a fallen world from time to time

  55. will feel the weightiness of this reality that we live in.

  56. Some people are abundantly aware that they are anxious,

  57. but many are not.

  58. We use a lot of kind of cloaking words for things like anxiety, worry, concern, etc.

  59. So I hope two things for our time together this morning just before we read the text.

  60. That you will have a clear understanding of your personal anxiety

  61. and be better equipped to fight for your joy.

  62. And secondly, that you will have a clear understanding of others' anxiety

  63. and be better equipped to fight for their joy.

  64. We are instructed to love one another,

  65. and Paul tells us in Galatians 6-2

  66. that if we love one another, we will bear one another's burdens.

  67. We're to take on the trouble of others.

  68. So if you're in a relationship with somebody who deals with anxiety,

  69. which if you're unaware of this, you are.

  70. You're in a relationship with somebody who deals with anxiety, right?

  71. They're going to ask for help,

  72. and you ought to be able to give them good biblical answers to their spiritual problems.

  73. So our text for today is Philippians 4, verses 4-9.

    Philippians 4:4–9

  74. Before I read it, beloved, let me remind you this is God's word to us,

  75. written for his glory and our good.

  76. We would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises

  77. and obey its commands.

  78. Verse 4.

  79. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  80. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  81. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

  82. The Lord is at hand.

  83. Do not be anxious about anything,

  84. but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving,

  85. let your requests be made known to God.

  86. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

  87. will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  88. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,

  89. whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

  90. whatever is commendable,

  91. if there is any excellence,

  92. if there is anything worthy of praise,

  93. think about these things.

  94. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me,

  95. practice these things,

  96. and the God of peace will be with you.

  97. I was once at a biblical counseling conference,

  98. and in an afternoon session,

  99. the speaker began his lesson by saying,

  100. very boldly, he said,

  101. tell me what you worry about or what makes you angry,

  102. and I will show you your idols.

  103. Well, I found this emphatic statement just too strong

  104. to not wrestle out its implications.

  105. In fact, I probably would have done well

  106. to listen to the rest of what he had to say,

  107. but I spent the next hour writing down things that worried me

  108. or things that angered me

  109. and tracing each thing to its source.

  110. I just kept asking,

  111. but why?

  112. Why does that worry me?

  113. Why does that cause me to be angry?

  114. And I was shocked to discover that most,

  115. if not all,

  116. of my worry was sinful anxiety.

  117. Paul tells us in verse 6,

  118. do not be anxious about anything.

  119. However, in 2 Corinthians 11, verse 28,

    2 Corinthians 11:28

  120. he writes,

  121. after a list of things that he had suffered,

  122. he says,

  123. The word in Greek is a very flexible word,

  124. and that's why Paul can use the word

  125. in two different places,

  126. and contextually we can understand it differently,

  127. and in our English we just get the word anxiety

  128. in both places.

  129. But what we can learn is that it is possible

  130. to be faithfully concerned about a matter,

  131. not to be flippant, uncaring,

  132. but you can be faithfully concerned about a matter.

  133. But the command of Paul in verse 6

  134. to not be anxious about anything

  135. is in reference to a faithless concern.

  136. And this is an anxiety that must be remedied

  137. for our good and for the glory of God.

  138. Wouldn't it be wonderful to set aside

  139. faithless concern,

  140. faithless anxiety.

  141. Now before I give you the outline for the text

  142. and we begin our study of it,

  143. I want you to see something significant.

  144. Everything Paul is teaching us to do

  145. is an expansion of what he has previously declared

  146. we are.

  147. Take a look back at chapter 4, verse 1.

  148. He says,

  149. Therefore, my brothers whom I long for,

  150. my joy and crown,

  151. stand firm thus in the Lord,

  152. my beloved.

  153. What does standing firm look like?

  154. In verses 2 and 3,

  155. Paul tells us it is working toward

  156. and maintaining the unity of the church

  157. and other things that follow in our text.

  158. Right?

  159. He's saying,

  160. Therefore, live like this.

  161. But 4.1 begins with a therefore.

  162. Paul is saying,

  163. Stand firm because of something.

  164. What is that something?

  165. is the reality of who you and I are

  166. in Jesus Christ.

  167. Right?

  168. If we have placed saving faith in Him.

  169. Right?

  170. Because of who you are.

  171. Notice verse 1.

  172. He calls my brothers and he says,

  173. Beloved.

  174. Right?

  175. Signifying words.

  176. Titles for people who are found in Christ.

  177. Therefore, stand firm.

  178. firm.

  179. You can back up a bit more

  180. into chapter 3

  181. and see verses 20 and 21.

  182. He says,

  183. But our citizenship is in heaven

  184. and from it we await a Savior,

  185. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  186. who will transform our lowly body

  187. to be like His glorious body

  188. by the power that enables Him

  189. even to subject all things to Himself.

  190. If we are in Christ,

  191. we are not living primarily for this life,

  192. but primarily for the life to come.

  193. We are part of a theocracy

  194. being ruled by King Jesus

  195. who is bringing all things under His reign.

  196. Right?

  197. Now and forevermore.

  198. We have to have this framework in our minds.

  199. Right?

  200. This text, verses 4-9,

  201. is written for Christians.

  202. People have placed their faith in Jesus

  203. and helps us to understand

  204. how to deal with sinful anxiety.

  205. So the outline for the text will be as follows.

  206. Number one, fight for your joy.

  207. I'll go back to these

  208. if you're not familiar with the way

  209. I format sermons.

  210. Number one, fight for joy.

  211. Number two, be gracious toward others.

  212. Number three, turn to God

  213. with all of your concerns.

  214. And number four,

  215. if you're scribbling these right now,

  216. I'm sorry,

  217. dehabituate by rehabituating.

  218. I won't spell that for you.

  219. Dehabituate by rehabituating.

  220. All right, number one.

  221. Fight for your joy.

  222. Look at this in verse four.

  223. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  224. Again, I will say rejoice.

  225. Lasting joy,

  226. true joy,

  227. the kind of rejoicing

  228. that Paul's talking about here

  229. is not circumstantial.

  230. It has nothing to do

  231. with what's going on around you.

  232. It has everything to do

  233. with the state of being

  234. because of who you are.

  235. We may find temporary happiness

  236. in our circumstances, right?

  237. And that's fine.

  238. That's good.

  239. I took the boys

  240. to a birthday party yesterday.

  241. We had fun.

  242. It was an enjoyable time.

  243. But we will just as readily

  244. find great misery

  245. in our circumstances.

  246. If you're always looking

  247. to circumstances,

  248. you will have highs

  249. and you will have desperate lows.

  250. Paul here exhorts us

  251. to rejoice always.

  252. How is this possible?

  253. It is possible

  254. and it is only possible

  255. if we find joy

  256. in an unchanging,

  257. eternal source of joy, right?

  258. in the Lord.

  259. It's the only place

  260. this kind of always rejoicing

  261. can come from.

  262. And beloved,

  263. this is a battle of the mind.

  264. Romans chapter 12 and verse 2.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  265. Paul says,

  266. do not be conformed

  267. to this world,

  268. but be transformed,

  269. changed by the renewal

  270. of your mind.

  271. This is not a battle

  272. that needs to take place

  273. at the level of your feelings.

  274. You will lose that battle.

  275. This is a battle

  276. that has to take place

  277. in the mind.

  278. In our recent study

  279. of the book of Hebrews,

  280. we learned at the end

  281. of chapter 10

  282. about the bizarre behavior

  283. of a suffering church.

  284. Not behaving at all

  285. like the world, right?

  286. Not conformed to the world,

  287. but like transformed people.

  288. We read in verse 34

  289. of Hebrews 10.

  290. You had compassion

  291. on those in prison.

  292. So there were believers

  293. who had been imprisoned

  294. for their faith.

  295. And you joyfully accepted

  296. the plundering

  297. of your property.

  298. I think we could easily say,

  299. I think many of us would go,

  300. yeah, yeah,

  301. compassion on those in prison.

  302. I could do that.

  303. But as they did this,

  304. they were identifying themselves

  305. as Christian, right?

  306. They were showing themselves

  307. to be in relationship

  308. with these people

  309. who had been imprisoned

  310. for their faith.

  311. And as a result,

  312. their property was plundered, right?

  313. Their homes were ransacked.

  314. And the author of Hebrews

  315. says the most curious thing.

  316. They did this joyfully.

  317. They joyfully accepted

  318. the plundering

  319. of their property.

  320. How?

  321. How?

  322. How are they rejoicing always,

  323. even in a circumstance like that?

  324. Well, he tells us.

  325. I know you don't have it

  326. open in front of you,

  327. but I'll tell you.

  328. He goes on in that verse to say,

  329. since you knew,

  330. in the mind,

  331. mindfully,

  332. you knew

  333. that you yourselves

  334. had a better possession

  335. and an abiding one.

  336. One that could not

  337. be taken away, right?

  338. One not based in circumstance,

  339. but in the Lord,

  340. an unchanging source

  341. of joy.

  342. John Newton,

  343. this is on your bulletin,

  344. I believe,

  345. if I'm tracking my mind right,

  346. who was an 18th century

  347. Anglican minister.

  348. He's famous for writing

  349. the hymn Amazing Grace.

  350. Use this wonderful analogy.

  351. He said,

  352. suppose a man was going

  353. to New York

  354. to take possession

  355. of a large estate

  356. and his carriage

  357. should break down

  358. one mile

  359. before he got to the city,

  360. which obligated him

  361. to walk the rest of the way

  362. to the inheritance, right?

  363. So here's a man

  364. doing well

  365. and now suffering,

  366. but he's headed somewhere, right?

  367. He's headed to receive

  368. a great inheritance.

  369. Newton goes on to say,

  370. what a fool

  371. we should think him

  372. if we saw him

  373. wringing his hands

  374. and blubbering

  375. all the remaining mile.

  376. My carriage is broken.

  377. My carriage is broken.

  378. And many of us

  379. live this way.

  380. We have eternal reward

  381. promised to us

  382. and we're blubbering

  383. and wringing our hands

  384. about temporal loss.

  385. C.S. Lewis,

  386. in The Weight of Glory,

  387. wrote,

  388. we are half-hearted creatures

  389. fooling about

  390. with drink and sex

  391. and ambition

  392. when infinite joy

  393. is offered us.

  394. Like an ignorant child

  395. who wants to go on

  396. making mud pies

  397. in a slum

  398. because he cannot imagine

  399. what is meant

  400. by the offer

  401. of a holiday

  402. at the sea.

  403. We are far

  404. too easily

  405. pleased.

  406. So we have to fight

  407. for joy

  408. and we have to do so

  409. by reorienting

  410. our thinking.

  411. Secondly,

  412. be gracious

  413. towards others.

  414. Verse 5.

  415. Verse 5 says,

  416. let your reasonableness

  417. be known to everyone.

  418. The Lord

  419. is at hand.

  420. Now,

  421. the Greek word

  422. translated

  423. reasonableness

  424. in the English

  425. standard version

  426. of the Bible

  427. that most of us

  428. have this morning.

  429. If you don't,

  430. don't feel left out.

  431. It's okay.

  432. But this word

  433. is a very rich word.

  434. Commentators

  435. and translators

  436. have varied widely

  437. on its rendering.

  438. You ready?

  439. Here's some of the suggestions

  440. for this Greek word.

  441. Reasonableness,

  442. generosity,

  443. goodwill,

  444. friendliness,

  445. magnanimity,

  446. charity,

  447. mercy,

  448. leniency,

  449. big-heartedness.

  450. I don't love that one.

  451. Moderation,

  452. forbearance,

  453. and gentleness

  454. are some of the attempts

  455. to capture the meaning

  456. of this word.

  457. It is a very flexible,

  458. expansive word.

  459. Possibly,

  460. the best word,

  461. and I say this with humility,

  462. is graciousness.

  463. Perhaps the ESV

  464. translates

  465. reasonableness

  466. because of the connection

  467. of these ideas,

  468. right?

  469. If we're going to be

  470. fighting for joy,

  471. we're going to see

  472. that there's a way

  473. to do this further

  474. in the text,

  475. right?

  476. Paul certainly seems

  477. to be juxtaposing

  478. anxiety in verse 6

  479. with joy in verse 4

  480. and peace in verse 7.

  481. And then in verse 8,

  482. he tells us to be

  483. thoughtful and mindful

  484. and to set our minds

  485. on particular things.

  486. And so I think

  487. that's a pretty fair word,

  488. reasonableness,

  489. right?

  490. If we're going to be

  491. joyful and peaceful

  492. rather than anxious,

  493. we will have to be

  494. reasonable,

  495. right?

  496. Romans 12,

  497. 2,

  498. transformed by the

  499. renewing of our minds.

  500. But I think it is

  501. important that we see

  502. our reasonableness,

  503. right,

  504. connected to this

  505. more expansive idea

  506. of graciousness

  507. or friendliness,

  508. charity,

  509. mercy,

  510. leniency,

  511. all of these ways

  512. this word can be

  513. translated.

  514. We need to see

  515. that the way

  516. that we live our lives

  517. should reverberate

  518. to others

  519. the love that God

  520. has shown us.

  521. God has been

  522. gracious to us

  523. in Christ.

  524. Therefore,

  525. we should display

  526. the same graciousness

  527. toward others,

  528. right?

  529. We should show

  530. people the great

  531. confidence that we

  532. have in our God,

  533. which is perhaps

  534. why the uninspired

  535. verse and chapter

  536. numbers,

  537. sometimes these drive

  538. me crazy,

  539. but it's perhaps

  540. why the Lord

  541. is at hand

  542. is included

  543. with verse 5,

  544. although it sure

  545. feels like it

  546. belongs with

  547. verse 6,

  548. right?

  549. Because God

  550. is near,

  551. right?

  552. We can be

  553. reasonable,

  554. right?

  555. Or,

  556. as I'm suggesting,

  557. we can be

  558. gracious towards

  559. others because

  560. God has been

  561. gracious toward

  562. us.

  563. So we need

  564. to fight for

  565. our joy,

  566. for not to be

  567. anxious.

  568. We're to be

  569. gracious towards

  570. others by

  571. displaying our

  572. confidence in

  573. this gracious

  574. God.

  575. And we're to

  576. turn to God

  577. with all of

  578. our concerns.

  579. Verse 6

  580. and verse 7,

  581. right?

  582. The Lord is at

  583. hand.

  584. You want to

  585. insert here a

  586. therefore at the

  587. beginning of verse

  588. 6, right?

  589. Because God is at

  590. hand, because he

  591. is a present help

  592. in times of

  593. trouble, we

  594. can go to

  595. him in our

  596. anxiety.

  597. Do not be

  598. anxious about

  599. anything, but

  600. in everything,

  601. by prayer and

  602. supplication, with

  603. thanksgiving, let

  604. your requests be

  605. made known to

  606. God.

  607. And the peace

  608. of God, which

  609. surpasses all

  610. understanding, will

  611. guard your

  612. hearts and your

  613. minds in Christ

  614. Jesus.

  615. There is an

  616. alternative to

  617. your anxiety

  618. and mine.

  619. Faith.

  620. The alternative

  621. to our sinful

  622. anxiety is

  623. faith.

  624. We can not

  625. be anxious about

  626. anything, but

  627. in everything, we

  628. can turn to

  629. God because he

  630. is at

  631. hand.

  632. Now, the

  633. prayer and the

  634. supplication and

  635. requests were

  636. meant to take

  637. their troubles to

  638. him with our

  639. synonyms that

  640. refer to direct

  641. petitions made

  642. of God.

  643. God, I

  644. believe that

  645. Paul uses the

  646. repetition to

  647. note that our

  648. going to God

  649. with all of our

  650. concerns will be

  651. often and it

  652. will be varied.

  653. There are a lot

  654. of things for us

  655. to be concerned

  656. about.

  657. To not be

  658. anxious, we

  659. will need to

  660. pray and we

  661. will need to

  662. pray and we

  663. will need to

  664. pray.

  665. Paul also

  666. instructs that we

  667. should do this

  668. with thanksgiving.

  669. The fact that

  670. God has done

  671. so much already

  672. ought to give us

  673. the confidence

  674. that he will

  675. continue to

  676. do so.

  677. Why are we so

  678. prayerless so

  679. often?

  680. I think we've

  681. forgotten God's

  682. goodness to us

  683. already.

  684. We ought to be

  685. driven to prayer

  686. when we remember

  687. how very kind

  688. he's been to us.

  689. We are in the

  690. midst of a tough

  691. circumstance.

  692. It can be

  693. difficult to

  694. remember or to

  695. notice anything

  696. positive.

  697. I will tell you

  698. for myself, I

  699. have to put a

  700. great deal of

  701. mental effort

  702. into remembering

  703. all of God's

  704. goodness to me.

  705. As we say

  706. often, we are

  707. slow learners and

  708. we are quick to

  709. forget.

  710. We far too often

  711. find ourselves

  712. prayerless in

  713. trials.

  714. No wonder we

  715. become anxious.

  716. Prayerlessness is

  717. a sign of

  718. faithlessness.

  719. When we don't

  720. pray, it is

  721. because we

  722. have forgotten

  723. who is in

  724. control.

  725. We too often

  726. think that we

  727. are in control

  728. and when that

  729. illusion comes

  730. crashing down,

  731. you think you

  732. can, I got

  733. this, and

  734. something outside

  735. of your control

  736. just comes crashing

  737. down.

  738. I'm not in

  739. control of

  740. anything.

  741. I can do so

  742. little.

  743. We become

  744. anxious.

  745. Of course we

  746. do.

  747. We think we

  748. can control

  749. our world.

  750. The world is

  751. falling apart.

  752. We ought to

  753. rightly be

  754. anxious in

  755. those moments

  756. except that

  757. we know who

  758. is in

  759. control.

  760. It is a

  761. very good

  762. thing that

  763. we are not

  764. in control

  765. when we

  766. recognize who

  767. is in

  768. control.

  769. Peter writes

  770. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5:6

  771. chapter 5

  772. verse 6

  773. and following,

  774. humble yourselves

  775. therefore under

  776. the mighty

  777. hand of God

  778. so that at

  779. the proper

  780. time he may

  781. exalt you.

  782. Humble yourself.

  783. Recognize who

  784. you are under

  785. God and his

  786. might.

  787. Verse 7,

  788. casting all

  789. your anxieties

  790. on him

  791. because he

  792. cares for

  793. you.

  794. Peter goes

  795. on to say,

  796. be sober

  797. minded, be

  798. watchful.

  799. Your adversary

  800. the devil prowls

  801. around like a

  802. roaring lion.

  803. Seeking someone

  804. to devour.

  805. You may be

  806. familiar with

  807. verse 8 of

  808. 1 Peter chapter

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  809. 5.

  810. It's often

  811. disconnected from

  812. this idea of

  813. casting our

  814. anxieties on

  815. God.

  816. Who cares for

  817. us?

  818. So recognize

  819. that your

  820. anxiety is a

  821. spiritual thing

  822. happening.

  823. The devil

  824. wants to

  825. steal away

  826. your joy

  827. and your

  828. peace because

  829. it doesn't

  830. display who

  831. our God is

  832. to us in

  833. Christ.

  834. We become

  835. ineffective

  836. witnesses when

  837. we're as

  838. worried about

  839. the things

  840. that the

  841. world is

  842. worried about.

  843. We're all

  844. tied up in

  845. knots because

  846. of the

  847. coronavirus or

  848. the next

  849. election cycle.

  850. Our God

  851. continues to

  852. reign.

  853. He is who

  854. he said he

  855. is and will

  856. continue to

  857. be forever.

  858. We sing a

  859. song often on

  860. Sunday mornings

  861. called What a

  862. Friend We

  863. Have in

  864. Jesus.

  865. And it's

  866. a little

  867. sing-songy so

  868. maybe we

  869. miss sometimes

  870. the beauty

  871. of the

  872. words.

  873. I love

  874. this verse.

  875. Oh what

  876. peace we

  877. often forfeit.

  878. Oh what

  879. needless pain

  880. we bear.

  881. All because

  882. we do not

  883. carry everything

  884. to God

  885. in prayer.

  886. We can

  887. take our

  888. anxieties

  889. to God.

  890. Verse 7

  891. says in the

  892. peace of

  893. God which

  894. surpasses

  895. all

  896. understanding

  897. will guard

  898. your hearts

  899. and your

  900. minds in

  901. Christ Jesus.

  902. I think

  903. Paul means

  904. for there to

  905. be some

  906. duality in

  907. what he's

  908. saying here.

  909. I think

  910. he's first

  911. referring to

  912. Romans 5

  913. 1.

  914. Therefore

  915. since we

  916. have been

  917. justified by

  918. faith we

  919. have peace

  920. with God

  921. through our

  922. Lord Jesus

  923. Christ.

  924. The peace

  925. we have

  926. with God

  927. ought to

  928. inform the

  929. rest of

  930. the way

  931. that we

  932. live.

  933. And I

  934. do also

  935. think he

  936. means a

  937. feeling.

  938. A feeling

  939. of comfort

  940. in the

  941. midst.

  942. of trial

  943. because this

  944. is a

  945. peace that

  946. surpasses

  947. all

  948. understanding.

  949. People ought

  950. to look at

  951. the way we

  952. walk through

  953. trial as

  954. Christians and

  955. think us

  956. strange.

  957. Like those

  958. Christians that

  959. the author of

  960. Hebrews writes

  961. to joyfully

  962. accepted the

  963. plundering of

  964. your property.

  965. People ought

  966. to be looking

  967. at us that

  968. way and

  969. asking us

  970. about the

  971. hope that

  972. we have.

  973. Jesus talks

  974. about anxiety

  975. in Luke

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  976. chapter 12.

  977. You may be

  978. familiar with

  979. much of

  980. this passage.

  981. It's so

  982. good for

  983. our souls

  984. to hear

  985. it again.

  986. Beginning in

  987. verse 22.

  988. And Jesus

  989. said to his

  990. disciples,

  991. therefore I

  992. tell you,

  993. do not be

  994. anxious about

  995. your life,

  996. what you

  997. will eat,

  998. nor about

  999. your body,

  1000. what you

  1001. will put

  1002. on.

  1003. For life

  1004. is more

  1005. than food

  1006. and the

  1007. body more

  1008. than clothing.

  1009. Consider the

  1010. ravens.

  1011. They neither

  1012. sow nor

  1013. reap.

  1014. They have

  1015. neither

  1016. storehouse

  1017. nor barn.

  1018. And yet

  1019. God feeds

  1020. them.

  1021. Of how much

  1022. more value

  1023. are you

  1024. than the

  1025. birds?

  1026. And which

  1027. of you,

  1028. by being

  1029. anxious,

  1030. can add a

  1031. single hour

  1032. to a span

  1033. of life?

  1034. If then you

  1035. were not

  1036. able to do

  1037. a small

  1038. thing as

  1039. that,

  1040. why are you

  1041. anxious about

  1042. the rest?

  1043. Consider the

  1044. lilies,

  1045. how they grow,

  1046. they neither

  1047. toil nor

  1048. spin.

  1049. Yet I tell

  1050. you,

  1051. even Solomon

  1052. in all his

  1053. glory was

  1054. not arrayed

  1055. like one

  1056. of these.

  1057. But if

  1058. God so

  1059. clothes the

  1060. grass,

  1061. which is

  1062. alive in

  1063. the field

  1064. today,

  1065. and tomorrow

  1066. is thrown

  1067. into the

  1068. oven,

  1069. how much

  1070. more will

  1071. he clothe

  1072. you,

  1073. O you

  1074. of little

  1075. faith?

  1076. And do

  1077. not seek

  1078. what you

  1079. are to

  1080. eat and

  1081. what you

  1082. are to

  1083. drink,

  1084. nor be

  1085. worried.

  1086. For all

  1087. the nations

  1088. of the

  1089. world seek

  1090. after these

  1091. things,

  1092. and your

  1093. Father knows

  1094. that you

  1095. need them.

  1096. Instead,

  1097. seek his

  1098. kingdom,

  1099. and these

  1100. things will

  1101. be added

  1102. to you.

  1103. Fear not,

  1104. little flock,

  1105. for it is

  1106. your Father's

  1107. good pleasure

  1108. to give you

  1109. the kingdom.

  1110. The Lord

  1111. is at

  1112. hand.

  1113. He is

  1114. working

  1115. grand

  1116. purposes

  1117. for the

  1118. sake of

  1119. his name

  1120. and for

  1121. our good.

  1122. We can

  1123. take

  1124. everything

  1125. to him.

  1126. And the

  1127. promise as

  1128. we're doing

  1129. this is

  1130. that we

  1131. will have

  1132. an

  1133. un-understandable

  1134. peace.

  1135. Great joy

  1136. accompanies

  1137. recognizing

  1138. your position,

  1139. your place

  1140. in the world,

  1141. your inability

  1142. to control

  1143. your circumstance.

  1144. We act,

  1145. the birds are

  1146. actually looking

  1147. for food,

  1148. but God's

  1149. providing it.

  1150. We're not

  1151. ultimately in

  1152. control,

  1153. ever.

  1154. The account

  1155. of the

  1156. conversion of

  1157. Blaise Pascal,

  1158. who was a

  1159. 17th century

  1160. French mathematician,

  1161. a wonderful,

  1162. fascinating man,

  1163. was found on a

  1164. piece of parchment

  1165. sewn into his

  1166. coat eight years

  1167. after his death.

  1168. I love that he

  1169. wrote this down

  1170. and had it

  1171. sewn into

  1172. his coat.

  1173. It was found

  1174. this many years

  1175. later.

  1176. This is what

  1177. he wrote.

  1178. Year of

  1179. Grace,

  1180. 1654,

  1181. Monday 23

  1182. November,

  1183. Feast of

  1184. Saint Clement.

  1185. From about

  1186. half past

  1187. ten at night

  1188. to about

  1189. half an hour

  1190. after midnight,

  1191. fire.

  1192. God of

  1193. Abraham,

  1194. God of

  1195. Isaac,

  1196. God of

  1197. Jacob,

  1198. not of

  1199. philosophers

  1200. and scholars.

  1201. Certitude,

  1202. heartfelt joy,

  1203. peace.

  1204. God of

  1205. Jesus Christ,

  1206. God of

  1207. Jesus Christ,

  1208. my God

  1209. and your

  1210. God,

  1211. joy,

  1212. joy,

  1213. joy,

  1214. tears of

  1215. joy,

  1216. Jesus Christ,

  1217. Jesus Christ,

  1218. may I never

  1219. be separated

  1220. from him.

  1221. Isn't that

  1222. cool?

  1223. I'll write

  1224. that on the

  1225. inside of my

  1226. jacket.

  1227. So we need

  1228. to fight for

  1229. joy.

  1230. We need to be

  1231. gracious towards

  1232. others.

  1233. We need to

  1234. turn to God

  1235. with all of

  1236. our concerns.

  1237. And fourthly,

  1238. dehabituate by

  1239. rehabituating.

  1240. Verse eight

  1241. and nine.

  1242. Finally,

  1243. brothers,

  1244. whatever is

  1245. true,

  1246. whatever is

  1247. honorable,

  1248. whatever is

  1249. just,

  1250. whatever is

  1251. pure,

  1252. whatever is

  1253. lovely,

  1254. whatever is

  1255. commendable,

  1256. there's any

  1257. excellence or

  1258. there's anything

  1259. worthy of

  1260. praise.

  1261. Think about

  1262. these things

  1263. which you have

  1264. learned and

  1265. received and

  1266. heard and

  1267. seen in me.

  1268. Practice these

  1269. things and the

  1270. God of peace

  1271. will be with

  1272. you.

  1273. Right?

  1274. So he's

  1275. talking both

  1276. about thought

  1277. and practice.

  1278. Right?

  1279. And you see,

  1280. we could,

  1281. I mean,

  1282. we don't have

  1283. time this

  1284. morning to talk

  1285. about all

  1286. these things,

  1287. true,

  1288. honorable,

  1289. just.

  1290. But what he's

  1291. saying is take

  1292. you worry and

  1293. put them on

  1294. things that

  1295. are worthy

  1296. of your

  1297. thoughts.

  1298. Right?

  1299. You're

  1300. dehabituating

  1301. by

  1302. rehabituating.

  1303. You're

  1304. changing the

  1305. way that

  1306. you think.

  1307. You're

  1308. focusing on

  1309. these wonderful

  1310. promises of

  1311. God to

  1312. us in

  1313. Christ.

  1314. And the

  1315. things that

  1316. they've seen

  1317. modeled in

  1318. the life of

  1319. Paul,

  1320. that you see

  1321. modeled in

  1322. the text and

  1323. in leaders in

  1324. your life,

  1325. that you ought

  1326. to practice

  1327. these things.

  1328. Be about the

  1329. work of

  1330. God as

  1331. well.

  1332. We are

  1333. creatures,

  1334. of habit.

  1335. When I

  1336. drive into

  1337. Dahlonega,

  1338. when I

  1339. hit that

  1340. first light

  1341. in town,

  1342. I instinctively

  1343. turn right.

  1344. It's hard for

  1345. me not to

  1346. get into that

  1347. turning lane.

  1348. If I'm

  1349. heading right

  1350. into the

  1351. middle of

  1352. downtown or

  1353. I need to

  1354. go left

  1355. out towards

  1356. 52,

  1357. I've got to

  1358. make a

  1359. real mental

  1360. effort as

  1361. I'm coming

  1362. down the

  1363. hill.

  1364. Don't go

  1365. right,

  1366. don't go

  1367. right,

  1368. don't go

  1369. right.

  1370. Because we're

  1371. creatures of

  1372. habit.

  1373. We just

  1374. do things

  1375. instinctively.

  1376. I bet that

  1377. each one of

  1378. you put on

  1379. a particular

  1380. shoe this

  1381. morning first.

  1382. any thought

  1383. to it at

  1384. all.

  1385. I challenge

  1386. you to

  1387. start paying

  1388. attention to

  1389. what you

  1390. do.

  1391. I put on

  1392. my right

  1393. sock and

  1394. my right

  1395. shoe and

  1396. then I

  1397. put on

  1398. my left

  1399. sock and

  1400. my left

  1401. shoe.

  1402. I don't

  1403. put on

  1404. both socks.

  1405. I don't

  1406. know why,

  1407. but it's

  1408. the way I

  1409. do it.

  1410. And if there

  1411. was something

  1412. morally wrong

  1413. with the way I

  1414. was putting

  1415. on my socks

  1416. and shoes,

  1417. I would have

  1418. to train

  1419. myself to

  1420. do it

  1421. differently.

  1422. I would

  1423. have to

  1424. rehabilitate

  1425. myself to

  1426. do it.

  1427. The scripture

  1428. said you must

  1429. put on your

  1430. left shoe

  1431. first.

  1432. I'd have to

  1433. really work

  1434. at doing

  1435. such a

  1436. thing.

  1437. And so

  1438. if we're

  1439. to not

  1440. be anxious,

  1441. if we're

  1442. to set

  1443. our minds

  1444. on the

  1445. things we're

  1446. to set

  1447. our minds

  1448. on,

  1449. we're going

  1450. to have

  1451. to work

  1452. at this.

  1453. Paul said

  1454. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4 chapter mention

  1455. chapter 4

  1456. or 7,

  1457. train yourself

  1458. for godliness.

  1459. Train or

  1460. discipline

  1461. yourself

  1462. for godliness.

  1463. In a book

  1464. called The

  1465. Christian

  1466. Counselor's

  1467. Manual by

  1468. J. Adams,

  1469. he addresses

  1470. this,

  1471. this

  1472. re-habituating

  1473. and there's

  1474. a he in

  1475. here.

  1476. He's talking

  1477. about a

  1478. counselee

  1479. and he'll

  1480. mention the

  1481. counselor.

  1482. But he

  1483. says this,

  1484. how may I

  1485. discipline

  1486. myself,

  1487. he,

  1488. the

  1489. counselee,

  1490. may ask

  1491. insistently.

  1492. First,

  1493. the counselor

  1494. must indicate

  1495. that the

  1496. word discipline

  1497. clearly shows

  1498. that godliness

  1499. cannot be

  1500. zapped.

  1501. It cannot

  1502. be whipped

  1503. up like

  1504. instant

  1505. pudding.

  1506. Godliness

  1507. doesn't come

  1508. that way.

  1509. Discipline

  1510. means work.

  1511. It means

  1512. sustained

  1513. daily effort.

  1514. The word

  1515. Paul used

  1516. is the one

  1517. from which

  1518. the English

  1519. word gymnastics

  1520. and gymnasium

  1521. have been

  1522. derived.

  1523. It is a term

  1524. related to

  1525. athletics.

  1526. An athlete

  1527. becomes an

  1528. expert only

  1529. by years

  1530. of hard

  1531. practice.

  1532. There are

  1533. no instant

  1534. athletes.

  1535. It takes

  1536. years of

  1537. regular practice

  1538. to achieve

  1539. athletic

  1540. skill.

  1541. And so

  1542. in the

  1543. same way

  1544. as we

  1545. wrestle

  1546. with the

  1547. anxiety

  1548. in our

  1549. life,

  1550. and again,

  1551. I'm not

  1552. talking about

  1553. disorders,

  1554. I'm talking

  1555. about the

  1556. spiritual

  1557. anxiety

  1558. that most

  1559. of us

  1560. are going

  1561. to experience,

  1562. right?

  1563. We're going

  1564. to have to

  1565. train ourselves

  1566. to think

  1567. differently.

  1568. most of

  1569. my life

  1570. next to

  1571. the sink

  1572. in our

  1573. kitchen,

  1574. Philippians

    Philippians 4:8

  1575. chapter 4

  1576. verse 8

  1577. was written

  1578. on a

  1579. note card

  1580. and stuck.

  1581. We lived

  1582. various places

  1583. and that

  1584. same note

  1585. card was

  1586. stuck in

  1587. that spot.

  1588. Whatever's

  1589. true,

  1590. whatever's

  1591. honorable,

  1592. whatever's

  1593. just,

  1594. etc.

  1595. was up

  1596. there.

  1597. And as

  1598. a child,

  1599. I just

  1600. never thought

  1601. to ask

  1602. my mother

  1603. why it

  1604. was put

  1605. there.

  1606. But now

  1607. as an

  1608. adult,

  1609. as a

  1610. pastor,

  1611. I just

  1612. thought,

  1613. Mom,

  1614. Philippians

  1615. 4.8,

  1616. why was

  1617. that there?

  1618. And my

  1619. mom shared

  1620. with me

  1621. her lifelong

  1622. struggle with

  1623. anxiety.

  1624. What my

  1625. mom was

  1626. doing was

  1627. retraining

  1628. herself.

  1629. She was

  1630. rehabituating

  1631. by going,

  1632. this is not

  1633. what I need

  1634. to be thinking

  1635. about.

  1636. What I need

  1637. to be thinking

  1638. about are

  1639. things that

  1640. are true

  1641. and honorable

  1642. and just

  1643. and pure

  1644. and lovely.

  1645. She was

  1646. changing the

  1647. way that

  1648. she thought.

  1649. So,

  1650. beloved,

  1651. if you want

  1652. to fight

  1653. your anxiety,

  1654. it's not

  1655. going to be

  1656. found in

  1657. popular

  1658. psychology.

  1659. It's going

  1660. to be

  1661. found in

  1662. knowing the

  1663. promises of

  1664. God to

  1665. you in

  1666. Christ and

  1667. thinking about

  1668. those things,

  1669. meditating on

  1670. those things.

  1671. You've got to

  1672. change the

  1673. way you

  1674. think.

  1675. It's a

  1676. shocker by

  1677. changing the

  1678. way you

  1679. think.

  1680. God's

  1681. empowered word

  1682. retraining the

  1683. way you

  1684. think.

  1685. So,

  1686. we need to

  1687. fight for

  1688. joy,

  1689. be gracious

  1690. towards others,

  1691. turn to

  1692. God with

  1693. all of our

  1694. concerns,

  1695. and dehabituate

  1696. by

  1697. rehabituating.

  1698. May we

  1699. be a

  1700. people who

  1701. lay faithless

  1702. anxiety down

  1703. for joyful,

  1704. peaceful

  1705. faithfulness.

  1706. May we

  1707. be a

  1708. people that

  1709. live in a

  1710. way that

  1711. the world

  1712. would see

  1713. how very

  1714. reasonable

  1715. we are

  1716. because of

  1717. how great

  1718. Jesus Christ

  1719. is.

  1720. Let's pray

  1721. together.
