  1. Let me invite you to take out your copy of God's Word and turn to the book of Daniel.

  2. There is no shame this morning in turning to your table of contents.

  3. You'll find it between Ezekiel and Hosea.

  4. While you're getting the artist to share a funny thought I had with you this morning,

  5. sometimes the room is so quiet and it's amazing.

  6. You go like, man, all these kids are in the room and it's so very quiet in here.

  7. And sometimes the babies are so chatty.

  8. And I think, I think, when you start paying attention,

  9. because when they walk in, I think they look at each other like,

  10. if you'll speak up, I'll speak up.

  11. Like, we'll show them who's in charge.

  12. Seems to be one of those mornings.

  13. They're on the same rhythm this morning, aren't they?

  14. Before I begin speaking about the book of Daniel,

  15. I just want to remind you there's a few of them left out there.

  16. I think 10 or so of these ESV scripture journals.

  17. This is something we've been doing for a little while,

  18. back when we started the book of Hebrews.

  19. Great little resource.

  20. It's got the text on one side and notes,

  21. the spot for notes on the other.

  22. So if you'd like to pick one of these up out there in the book nook,

  23. if they run out, they're not expensive.

  24. I think Amazon has them for six bucks.

  25. We've got them out there for five,

  26. so we're saving you a little.

  27. But feel free to take one,

  28. even if you don't have money today to pay for it.

  29. You can owe us.

  30. It'll be just fine.

  31. We will trust you.

  32. So if you'd like to grab one of those,

  33. I want to encourage you to grab that out there in the hallway in the book nook.

  34. Today, I'm simply going to preach a Daniel overview sermon.

  35. I'm going to labor to give you a brief summary of the book of Daniel

  36. as we are set to begin our study of it starting next Lord's Day.

  37. We'll spend 10-ish weeks in the text.

  38. I'll first give you a quick flyover of the entire book,

  39. and then we will consider the three most prominent themes of the work.

  40. So even as you have the book open in front of you,

  41. I'm going to reference it at a number of times,

  42. and I would encourage you to flip to those spots and see that text yourself.

  43. But just keep in mind we're big picture, high flyover this morning.

  44. So Daniel consists of 12 chapters,

  45. and it is widely agreed that Daniel is its author.

  46. It's not even really up for debate.

  47. The first six chapters of it are historical narrative

  48. and consist of six accounts, six different stories,

  49. one for each chapter.

  50. This is probably the part of Daniel you're most familiar with.

  51. The final six chapters are predominantly visions that Daniel has about the future.

  52. It is helpful that this work is largely, not entirely,

  53. but largely written in chronological order.

  54. The entire work takes place during the exile of the Jewish people

  55. after the Babylonian sacking of Jerusalem in the 6th century BC.

  56. The first four chapters occur during the reign of the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar.

  57. In chapter one, we learn of the famous story of the four young Hebrew boys

  58. who refused to eat the defiled food of their captors

  59. and end up prospering both in health and in position

  60. because of their faithfulness.

  61. In chapter two, king Nebuchadnezzar has a dream that he wants interpreted,

  62. but to ensure that none of his wise men can fabricate the interpretation,

  63. he insists that they tell him both the content of his dream

  64. and the interpretation.

  65. And their response to that is,

  66. that's impossible.

  67. How could we know?

  68. So they're unable to do so,

  69. but God makes Daniel able to do so.

  70. In chapter three, we have the famous story

  71. of the king's great idol that Daniel's friends refuse to worship.

  72. So Nebuchadnezzar throws them into the fiery furnace,

  73. but God is merciful to them and they survive.

  74. Chapter four, Nebuchadnezzar writes a letter to his whole empire

  75. praising God in response to what happened in chapter three,

  76. but then it seems across a bit of time,

  77. he becomes very proud

  78. and God through an illness humbles the king.

  79. In chapter five,

  80. Belshazzar, who is Nebuchadnezzar's son,

  81. is now king

  82. and we are told of a riotous feast he holds for pagan gods.

  83. In fact, they take vessels that were taken out of the temple in Jerusalem

  84. and they're drinking wine.

  85. They're getting drunk out of those vessels,

  86. which were meant for the worship of God.

  87. And so a hand appears and writes on a wall,

  88. a language nobody understands.

  89. And Daniel is called upon to interpret the writing.

  90. He tells the king that he has been weighed in the balance

  91. and found wanting.

  92. And that night, Belshazzar is slain.

  93. Chapter six contains the most famous story from Daniel.

  94. Daniel, Darius the Mede is now king

  95. and he issues an edict that he alone is to be prayed to.

  96. Daniel continues to pray to the Hebrew God,

  97. to our God,

  98. and he's therefore thrown into a den of lions.

  99. Interestingly, this is toward the end of Daniel's life.

  100. He's likely about 80.

  101. I don't know that many of us have seen a story Bible

  102. with a picture of Daniel in his 80s

  103. in the lion's den.

  104. And then you likely know that God mercifully spares his life

  105. from those lions.

  106. Chapters seven and eight contain visions Daniel has

  107. during the reign of King Belshazzar

  108. about the rise and fall of earthly kingdoms.

  109. So it's prophetic,

  110. but that prophecy has been fulfilled.

  111. Chapter nine is a record of a long prayer

  112. prayed by Daniel during the reign of Darius.

  113. Possibly one of those very prayers he was praying

  114. when he's taken captive and thrown into the lion's den.

  115. And then chapters 10, 11, and 12

  116. are the most challenging chapters of the book.

  117. And they present another vision of Daniel's

  118. about the end of this age.

  119. So they're prophetic,

  120. but yet to be fulfilled,

  121. most will argue.

  122. So this is a big and broad overview

  123. of the entire book.

  124. This morning, I want to present to you

  125. the three major themes of the book of Daniel, right?

  126. So we're setting up framework for ourselves.

  127. If you're a guest this morning

  128. and you're from out of town,

  129. I apologize that you won't be able to hear

  130. the rest of what we'll be doing.

  131. But certainly for those of you

  132. who are here regularly,

  133. take some good notes.

  134. Have these themes in your mind

  135. as we study the rest of this work.

  136. So those three major themes are,

  137. number one, the rise and fall of man.

  138. Number two, the immovable sovereignty of God.

  139. And number three, the resilient faith of Daniel

  140. and his friends in a hostile culture.

  141. The resilient faith of Daniel and his friends

  142. in a hostile culture.

  143. So the first theme, the rise and fall of man.

  144. A careful study of Daniel, which we intend to do,

  145. will teach us that God raises up men

  146. and God brings men low.

  147. The story of Daniel is set in the context

  148. of a Babylonian renaissance.

  149. Under King Nebuchadnezzar's reign,

  150. the Babylonian empire flourished

  151. after a thousand year decline.

  152. He had really turned the empire around.

  153. Country after country fell to its military might

  154. and it reached its largest size during this time.

  155. In the region, there was just a domino.

  156. They just conquered and conquered and conquered.

  157. And Nebuchadnezzar is not just famous

  158. for the stories that we find in Daniel,

  159. but much was written about him

  160. in an extra-biblical literature.

  161. So in my note writing this week,

  162. I often have to teach pages,

  163. the names, Bible names.

  164. Pages already knew the name Nebuchadnezzar.

  165. I did not have to teach it that

  166. so it would not spell check it any longer.

  167. Like lots of extra-biblical literature

  168. writes of this historic character, Nebuchadnezzar.

  169. He was a big deal in his time.

  170. And he was not only concerned with military might,

  171. but also cultural renewal.

  172. He was zealous to make the city of Babylon great,

  173. and he did.

  174. It was massive.

  175. The Greek historian Herodotus said,

  176. in addition to its enormous size,

  177. it surpasses in splendor any city of the known world.

  178. The city had large gates and avenues,

  179. a new palace,

  180. and as many as 50 temples built to false gods.

  181. This is the days of the hanging gardens of Babylon,

  182. if you know your ancient wonders of the world.

  183. We get a picture of Nebuchadnezzar's pride in the city

  184. in Daniel chapter 4 and verse 30,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  185. where he says,

  186. is not this great Babylon,

  187. which I have built by my mighty power

  188. as a royal residence

  189. and for the glory of my majesty.

  190. But Nebuchadnezzar's life came to an end.

  191. He did all of this,

  192. and it came to an end.

  193. And the city itself also is a memory.

  194. He is a distant memory,

  195. and the splendor of Babylon is no more.

  196. His reign was followed by another,

  197. and another,

  198. and so on.

  199. Kings are raised up by our God,

  200. and they are brought low by our God,

  201. as it is with all men.

  202. So we obviously,

  203. none of us have positions of power

  204. like Nebuchadnezzar

  205. or any of the kings that followed him.

  206. But in the same way,

  207. we are brought high,

  208. we are promoted,

  209. and we are brought low.

  210. We are humbled by God.

  211. Nebuchadnezzar himself has a dream

  212. in chapter 2

  213. of a man made up of different materials.

  214. And when the man is struck by a rock,

  215. it cannot withstand the blow,

  216. but it crumbles.

  217. It's utterly destroyed

  218. by this rock that strikes it.

  219. In the last days,

  220. all the kingdoms of this world

  221. will be as nothing

  222. when God establishes

  223. his everlasting kingdom.

  224. Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  225. and verse 44.

  226. Daniel,

  227. in his interpretation

  228. of the dream,

  229. says,

  230. And in the days

  231. of those kings,

  232. the God of heaven

  233. will set up a kingdom

  234. that shall never be destroyed,

  235. nor shall the kingdom

  236. be left to another people.

  237. It shall break in pieces

  238. all these kingdoms

  239. and bring them to an end,

  240. and it shall stand forever.

  241. The visions of chapter 7 and 8

  242. reinforce this,

  243. as we will observe

  244. four beasts in chapter 7

  245. and a ram and a goat

  246. in chapter 8,

  247. all which represent kingdoms

  248. that will rise and fall.

  249. We now can look back on that

  250. and see that they rose

  251. and they fell.

  252. Beloved,

  253. we ought never be too proud

  254. of our achievements.

  255. We must not become entranced

  256. by some idea

  257. of our might,

  258. for it is God

  259. who raises up

  260. and God

  261. who brings low.

  262. Daniel and his friends,

  263. as conquered captives,

  264. find much success

  265. in this foreign land.

  266. We'll see that repeatedly

  267. throughout the text.

  268. But not,

  269. Daniel records

  270. that he didn't accomplish it.

  271. It was nothing

  272. that he did.

  273. Daniel chapter 1

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  274. in verse 17,

  275. we hear,

  276. as for these four youths,

  277. God gave them learning

  278. and skill

  279. in all literature

  280. and wisdom,

  281. and Daniel

  282. had understanding

  283. in all visions

  284. and dreams.

  285. He understood

  286. the means

  287. by which he was promoted

  288. as being means

  289. that were given to them

  290. by God.

  291. This book will,

  292. or at least

  293. it ought to,

  294. teach us

  295. about the fragile nature

  296. of the power

  297. of man.

  298. But,

  299. what a wonderful thing

  300. in response,

  301. it will also teach us

  302. about a power

  303. that stands

  304. in contrast

  305. to the rise

  306. and the fall

  307. of man.

  308. And that power

  309. is,

  310. number two,

  311. the immovable

  312. sovereignty

  313. of God.

  314. This is a very good thing,

  315. beloved,

  316. when we recognize

  317. how little control

  318. we have,

  319. and we also realize

  320. who is in control.

  321. You are right

  322. to feel anxious

  323. in this age

  324. when you recognize

  325. that you have

  326. very little control.

  327. control.

  328. But,

  329. you have a reason

  330. to be faithful

  331. to the end

  332. when you realize

  333. that God

  334. is in control.

  335. It's not a single thing

  336. in this world

  337. that escapes

  338. his grasp.

  339. He is an absolute,

  340. immovable

  341. sovereign.

  342. This book teaches us

  343. that.

  344. The God of Daniel,

  345. our God,

  346. is unchanging,

  347. and he never ceases

  348. to rule

  349. over his creation.

  350. It is his.

  351. He declares mine

  352. over it.

  353. After God reveals

  354. the content

  355. and meaning

  356. of Nebuchadnezzar's

  357. dream to Daniel

  358. in chapter 2,

  359. Daniel prays this,

  360. beginning in verse 20.

  361. Blessed be the name

  362. of God

  363. forever and ever,

  364. to whom belong

  365. wisdom and might.

  366. He changes times

  367. and seasons.

  368. He removes kings

  369. and sets up kings.

  370. He gives wisdom

  371. to the wise

  372. and knowledge

  373. to those

  374. who have understanding.

  375. He reveals deep

  376. and hidden things.

  377. He knows

  378. what is in the darkness

  379. and the light

  380. dwells with him.

  381. To you,

  382. O God of my fathers,

  383. I give thanks

  384. and praise,

  385. for you have given me

  386. wisdom and might,

  387. and I have now

  388. made known to me

  389. what we asked of you,

  390. for you have made known

  391. to us

  392. the king's matter.

  393. Daniel begins

  394. his prayer

  395. specifically

  396. praising God

  397. for his eternal

  398. sovereignty

  399. over the kings

  400. of the earth.

  401. Right?

  402. He mentions

  403. also seasons.

  404. He's the dispeller

  405. of wisdom

  406. and of understanding.

  407. The interpretation

  408. of the dream

  409. showed that not only

  410. would earthly kingdoms

  411. come and go,

  412. but that they would

  413. come and go

  414. by the hand

  415. of God.

  416. Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  417. and verse 34,

  418. and you can also

  419. see this in verse

  420. 45,

  421. Daniel says

  422. to Nebuchadnezzar,

  423. as you looked,

  424. a stone was cut out

  425. by no human hand.

  426. It was the hand

  427. of God

  428. that cut the stone

  429. out in his dream,

  430. and it struck

  431. the image

  432. on its feet

  433. of iron and clay

  434. and broke them

  435. in pieces.

  436. After Daniel

  437. tells the king

  438. the interpretation

  439. of his dream,

  440. Nebuchadnezzar

  441. falls before Daniel

  442. and says to Daniel

  443. in chapter 2

  444. and verse 47,

  445. truly your God

  446. is God of gods

  447. and Lord

  448. of kings,

  449. reigning over

  450. all the powers.

  451. In chapter 5,

  452. we will observe

  453. King Balthazar

  454. calling upon Daniel

  455. to interpret

  456. the handwriting

  457. on the wall.

  458. Daniel tells him

  459. in chapter 5

  460. verse 18 and following,

  461. O king,

  462. the most high God

  463. gave Nebuchadnezzar

  464. your father

  465. kingship

  466. and greatness

  467. and glory

  468. and majesty.

  469. God gave it

  470. to him.

  471. Verse 19,

  472. And because of

  473. the greatness

  474. that he gave him,

  475. all peoples,

  476. nations,

  477. and languages

  478. trembled

  479. and feared

  480. before him.

  481. Whom he would

  482. he killed

  483. and whom he would

  484. he kept alive.

  485. Whom he would

  486. he raised up

  487. and whom he would

  488. he humbled.

  489. But when his,

  490. Nebuchadnezzar's,

  491. heart was lifted up

  492. and his spirit

  493. was hardened

  494. so that he dealt

  495. proudly,

  496. he was brought

  497. down from

  498. his kingly throne

  499. and his glory

  500. was taken

  501. from him.

  502. He was driven

  503. from among

  504. the children

  505. of mankind

  506. and his mind

  507. was made

  508. like that

  509. of a beast

  510. and his dwelling

  511. was with the wild

  512. donkeys.

  513. He was fed

  514. grass like an ox

  515. and his body

  516. was wet

  517. with the dew

  518. of heaven

  519. until he knew

  520. that the most high

  521. God rules

  522. the kingdom

  523. of mankind

  524. and sets over

  525. it whom

  526. he will.

  527. God taught

  528. Nebuchadnezzar,

  529. and Daniel's

  530. here telling

  531. this to his

  532. son Belthjar,

  533. right?

  534. By humbling

  535. him,

  536. making him

  537. mad,

  538. he went

  539. and lived

  540. like an

  541. animal

  542. for a while

  543. for God

  544. to say

  545. to him,

  546. you were

  547. the king

  548. because I

  549. made you

  550. the king

  551. and just

  552. like I

  553. made you

  554. the king

  555. I can

  556. make you

  557. like a

  558. dumb

  559. ox

  560. and when

  561. he realized

  562. this,

  563. he was

  564. restored

  565. once again

  566. to be

  567. the king.

  568. King Darius

  569. too would

  570. eventually

  571. confess

  572. the sovereignty

  573. of God.

  574. after the

  575. observance

  576. of Daniel's

  577. faithfulness

  578. and God's

  579. deliverance

  580. of Daniel

  581. from a

  582. knight

  583. in the

  584. lion's

  585. den,

  586. Darius

  587. proclaims

  588. in Daniel

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  589. chapter 6

  590. and verse

  591. 26,

  592. I make

  593. a decree

  594. that in

  595. all my

  596. royal dominion

  597. people are

  598. to tremble

  599. and fear

  600. before the

  601. God of

  602. Daniel

  603. for he

  604. is the

  605. living

  606. God

  607. enduring

  608. forever.

  609. His

  610. kingdom

  611. shall

  612. never be

  613. destroyed

  614. and his

  615. dominion

  616. shall

  617. be

  618. to the

  619. end.

  620. So here

  621. the king

  622. saying

  623. my

  624. royal

  625. dominion

  626. in my

  627. royal

  628. dominion

  629. in my

  630. reign

  631. we

  632. will

  633. worship

  634. this

  635. God

  636. because

  637. his

  638. reign

  639. will

  640. never

  641. come

  642. to an

  643. end.

  644. Because

  645. of the

  646. immovable

  647. sovereignty

  648. of God

  649. the book

  650. of Daniel

  651. teaches us

  652. that he

  653. will bring

  654. the earthly

  655. kingdoms

  656. to an

  657. end

  658. and

  659. establish

  660. his

  661. kingdom

  662. forever.

  663. I love

  664. this.

  665. I love

  666. this vision

  667. in chapter

  668. 7.

  669. It is

  670. good.

  671. I'm

  672. eager

  673. to get

  674. to

  675. Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  676. chapter

  677. 7

  678. beginning

  679. in

  680. verse

  681. 9.

  682. If you'll

  683. turn there

  684. you'll

  685. want to

  686. see this

  687. so if

  688. you'll

  689. turn

  690. there.

  691. We'll

  692. talk about

  693. it

  694. very

  695. briefly

  696. but I

  697. want

  698. to

  699. read

  700. it.

  701. Daniel

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  702. chapter

  703. 7

  704. beginning

  705. in

  706. verse

  707. 9.

  708. Daniel

  709. says

  710. !

  711. !

  712. So here he is

  713. ruling over

  714. lifting up

  715. casting

  716. down

  717. verse 13

  718. I saw

  719. in the

  720. night

  721. visions

  722. and

  723. behold

  724. with

  725. the

  726. clouds

  727. of

  728. heaven

  729. there

  730. came

  731. one

  732. like

  733. a

  734. son

  735. of

  736. man

  737. and

  738. he

  739. came

  740. to

  741. the

  742. ancient

  743. of

  744. days

  745. and

  746. was

  747. presented

  748. before

  749. him

  750. and

  751. to

  752. him

  753. was

  754. given

  755. dominion

  756. and

  757. glory

  758. and

  759. a

  760. kingdom

  761. that

  762. all

  763. peoples

  764. nations

  765. and

  766. languages

  767. should

  768. serve

  769. him

  770. his

  771. dominion

  772. is

  773. an

  774. everlasting

  775. dominion

  776. which

  777. shall

  778. not

  779. pass

  780. away

  781. and

  782. his

  783. kingdom

  784. one

  785. that

  786. shall

  787. not

  788. be

  789. destroyed

  790. if

  791. you're

  792. familiar

  793. with

  794. the

  795. book

  796. of

  797. Daniel

  798. you

  799. know

  800. who

  801. he's

  802. talking

  803. about

  804. if

  805. you

  806. are

  807. not

  808. who

  809. is

  810. this

  811. one

  812. like

  813. a

  814. son

  815. of

  816. man

  817. the

  818. Lord

  819. Jesus

  820. Christ

  821. that's

  822. who

  823. this

  824. vision

  825. is

  826. of

  827. God

  828. the

  829. son

  830. coming

  831. to

  832. God

  833. the

  834. father

  835. as

  836. you're

  837. reading

  838. your

  839. new

  840. testament

  841. this

  842. phrase

  843. may

  844. be

  845. familiar

  846. to

  847. you

  848. places

  849. like

  850. Mark

    Mark 10:45

  851. chapter

  852. 10

  853. verse

  854. 45

  855. Jesus

  856. says

  857. for

  858. even

  859. the

  860. son

  861. of

  862. man

  863. came

  864. not

  865. to

  866. be

  867. served

  868. but

  869. to

  870. serve

  871. and

  872. to

  873. give

  874. his

  875. life

  876. as

  877. a

  878. ransom

  879. for

  880. many

  881. right

  882. he

  883. means

  884. for

  885. his

  886. listeners

  887. to

  888. go

  889. whoa

  890. wait

  891. this

  892. is

  893. the

  894. one

  895. you're

  896. the

  897. one

  898. like

  899. a

  900. son

  901. of

  902. man

  903. who

  904. comes

  905. and

  906. sets

  907. up

  908. a

  909. kingdom

  910. that

  911. reigns

  912. forever

  913. !

  914. was sent

  915. by

  916. God

  917. the

  918. father

  919. in

  920. human

  921. flesh

  922. like

  923. a

  924. son

  925. of

  926. man

  927. to

  928. fulfill

  929. the

  930. righteous

  931. requirement

  932. of

  933. the

  934. law

  935. that

  936. we

  937. spoke

  938. about

  939. this

  940. morning

  941. in

  942. the

  943. catechism

  944. to

  945. die

  946. the

  947. death

  948. that

  949. all

  950. transgressors

  951. of

  952. the

  953. law

  954. deserve

  955. so that

  956. by faith

  957. in him

  958. we might

  959. become

  960. citizens

  961. of a

  962. kingdom

  963. that

  964. will

  965. never

  966. fade

  967. but

  968. it'll

  969. last

  970. forever

  971. and

  972. ever

  973. with

  974. Jesus

  975. as

  976. its

  977. ruler

  978. this

  979. future

  980. reality

  981. this

  982. sure

  983. and

  984. future

  985. reality

  986. purchased

  987. by the

  988. life

  989. death

  990. and

  991. resurrection

  992. of

  993. Jesus

  994. Christ

  995. is

  996. great

  997. reason

  998. for

  999. us

  1000. as

  1001. we

  1002. await

  1003. that

  1004. final

  1005. day

  1006. to

  1007. have

  1008. resilient

  1009. faith

  1010. to

  1011. recognize

  1012. that

  1013. we

  1014. are

  1015. not

  1016. of

  1017. this

  1018. world

  1019. while

  1020. we

  1021. are

  1022. still

  1023. in

  1024. it

  1025. so

  1026. thirdly

  1027. we're

  1028. going

  1029. to

  1030. note

  1031. the

  1032. theme

  1033. of

  1034. the

  1035. resilient

  1036. faith

  1037. of

  1038. Daniel

  1039. and

  1040. his

  1041. friends

  1042. in

  1043. a

  1044. hostile

  1045. culture

  1046. finally

  1047. let's

  1048. look

  1049. briefly

  1050. at

  1051. the

  1052. lives

  1053. of

  1054. Daniel

  1055. Hananiah

  1056. Mishael

  1057. and

  1058. Azariah

  1059. those

  1060. are

  1061. their

  1062. Hebrew

  1063. names

  1064. these

  1065. young

  1066. men

  1067. were

  1068. captured

  1069. in

  1070. the

  1071. taking

  1072. of

  1073. Jerusalem

  1074. they

  1075. had

  1076. been

  1077. of

  1078. high

  1079. position

  1080. in

  1081. Israel

  1082. but

  1083. were

  1084. now

  1085. slaves

  1086. in

  1087. a

  1088. foreign

  1089. land

  1090. and

  1091. they

  1092. were

  1093. being

  1094. asked

  1095. to

  1096. betray

  1097. their

  1098. God

  1099. for

  1100. the

  1101. sake

  1102. of

  1103. other

  1104. gods

  1105. there's

  1106. lots

  1107. of

  1108. cultural

  1109. pressure

  1110. on

  1111. them

  1112. to

  1113. turn

  1114. their

  1115. backs

  1116. on

  1117. the

  1118. Hebrew

  1119. God

  1120. we

  1121. will

  1122. spend

  1123. the

  1124. next

  1125. seven

  1126. weeks

  1127. considering

  1128. the

  1129. details

  1130. of

  1131. these

  1132. stories

  1133. are so

  1134. much

  1135. good

  1136. to be

  1137. unpacked

  1138. out of

  1139. them

  1140. so I

  1141. will

  1142. just give

  1143. you one

  1144. example

  1145. this

  1146. morning

  1147. in

  1148. chapter

  1149. in

  1150. chapter

  1151. three

  1152. Daniel's

  1153. friends

  1154. are

  1155. asked

  1156. to

  1157. bow

  1158. their

  1159. knees

  1160. to

  1161. a

  1162. massive

  1163. golden

  1164. image

  1165. built

  1166. by

  1167. Nebuchadnezzar

  1168. they refuse

  1169. to do

  1170. so

  1171. I think

  1172. you're

  1173. familiar

  1174. with

  1175. the

  1176. story

  1177. and

  1178. so

  1179. this

  1180. report

  1181. comes

  1182. to

  1183. the

  1184. king

  1185. these

  1186. three

  1187. will

  1188. not

  1189. do

  1190. it

  1191. and

  1192. he

  1193. brings

  1194. them

  1195. before

  1196. him

  1197. so

  1198. they're

  1199. before

  1200. this

  1201. Nebuchadnezzar

  1202. this

  1203. great

  1204. and

  1205. grand

  1206. mighty

  1207. king

  1208. Daniel

  1209. chapter

  1210. !

  1211. 3

  1212. beginning

  1213. in

  1214. verse

  1215. 14

  1216. we

  1217. read

  1218. then

  1219. Nebuchadnezzar

  1220. in

  1221. furious

  1222. rage

  1223. commanded

  1224. that

  1225. Shadrach

  1226. Meshach

  1227. and

  1228. Abednego

  1229. these

  1230. were the

  1231. names

  1232. given

  1233. to

  1234. them

  1235. change

  1236. their

  1237. names

  1238. as

  1239. they

  1240. went

  1241. to

  1242. be

  1243. slaves

  1244. in

  1245. Babylon

  1246. be

  1247. brought

  1248. so

  1249. they

  1250. brought

  1251. these

  1252. men

  1253. before

  1254. the

  1255. king

  1256. Nebuchadnezzar

  1257. answered

  1258. and said

  1259. to

  1260. them

  1261. is

  1262. it

  1263. true

  1264. oh

  1265. Shadrach

  1266. Meshach

  1267. and

  1268. Abednego

  1269. that

  1270. you

  1271. do

  1272. not

  1273. serve

  1274. my

  1275. gods

  1276. or

  1277. worship

  1278. the

  1279. golden

  1280. image

  1281. that

  1282. I

  1283. have

  1284. set

  1285. up

  1286. now

  1287. if

  1288. you

  1289. are

  1290. ready

  1291. when

  1292. you

  1293. hear

  1294. the

  1295. sound

  1296. of

  1297. the

  1298. horn

  1299. pipe

  1300. lyre

  1301. trigon

  1302. harp

  1303. bagpipe

  1304. and

  1305. every

  1306. kind

  1307. of

  1308. music

  1309. to

  1310. fall

  1311. down

  1312. and

  1313. worship

  1314. the

  1315. image

  1316. that

  1317. I

  1318. have

  1319. made

  1320. well

  1321. and

  1322. good

  1323. but

  1324. if

  1325. you

  1326. do

  1327. not

  1328. worship

  1329. you

  1330. shall

  1331. immediately

  1332. be

  1333. cast

  1334. into

  1335. a

  1336. burning

  1337. fiery

  1338. furnace

  1339. and

  1340. who

  1341. is

  1342. the

  1343. God

  1344. who

  1345. would

  1346. deliver

  1347. you

  1348. out

  1349. of

  1350. as

  1351. a

  1352. God

  1353. who

  1354. is

  1355. a

  1356. God

  1357. who

  1358. would

  1359. oppose

  1360. King

  1361. Nebuchadnezzar

  1362. verse

  1363. 16

  1364. Shadrach

  1365. Meshach

  1366. and

  1367. Abednego

  1368. answered

  1369. and said

  1370. to the

  1371. king

  1372. oh

  1373. Nebuchadnezzar

  1374. we have

  1375. no need

  1376. to answer

  1377. you

  1378. in this

  1379. matter

  1380. no need

  1381. to answer

  1382. in the

  1383. face of

  1384. this

  1385. king

  1386. I

  1387. don't

  1388. think

  1389. we

  1390. have

  1391. a

  1392. lot

  1393. of

  1394. context

  1395. for

  1396. what's

  1397. happening

  1398. here

  1399. the

  1400. fact

  1401. that

  1402. they're

  1403. even

  1404. standing

  1405. before

  1406. the

  1407. king

  1408. was

  1409. massively

  1410. significant

  1411. thing

  1412. and

  1413. he

  1414. is

  1415. furious

  1416. at

  1417. them

  1418. this

  1419. is

  1420. the

  1421. kind

  1422. of

  1423. off

  1424. with

  1425. their

  1426. heads

  1427. sort

  1428. of

  1429. situation

  1430. and

  1431. they

  1432. say

  1433. we

  1434. have

  1435. no

  1436. need

  1437. to

  1438. answer

  1439. you

  1440. in

  1441. the

  1442. matter

  1443. what

  1444. moxie

  1445. what

  1446. faith

  1447. but

  1448. they

  1456. our

  1457. God

  1458. whom

  1459. we

  1460. serve

  1461. is

  1462. able

  1463. to

  1464. deliver

  1465. us

  1466. from

  1467. the

  1468. burning

  1469. fiery

  1470. furnace

  1471. and

  1472. he

  1473. will

  1474. deliver

  1475. us

  1476. out

  1477. of

  1478. your

  1479. hand

  1480. oh

  1497. you

  1498. oh

  1504. serve

  1505. your

  1506. gods

  1507. or

  1508. worship

  1509. the

  1510. golden

  1511. image

  1512. that

  1513. you

  1514. have

  1515. set

  1516. up

  1517. !

  1518. two

  1519. ish

  1525. of

  1526. man

  1527. the

  1528. immovable

  1529. !

  1530. sovereignty

  1531. of

  1532. God

  1548. hope

  1549. that

  1550. you

  1551. will

  1552. join

  1553. me

  1554. in

  1555. eager

  1556. expectation

  1557. of

  1558. what

  1559. the

  1560. Lord

  1561. will

  1562. teach

  1563. us

  1564. as

  1565. we

  1566. continue

  1567. our

  1568. study

  1569. of

  1570. this

  1571. book

  1572. oh

  1573. that

  1574. it

  1575. would

  1576. make

  1577. us

  1578. humble

  1580. it

  1581. would

  1582. make

  1583. us

  1584. confident

  1585. in

  1586. our

  1587. unchangingly

  1588. sovereign

  1589. God

  1590. and

  1591. that

  1592. it

  1593. would

  1594. help

  1595. us

  1596. to

  1597. be

  1598. faithful

  1599. to

  1600. the

  1601. end

  1602. after

  1603. all

  1604. beloved

  1612. for

  1613. his
