  1. Please take your copy of God's Word and turn to Daniel chapter 4.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. The second theme is the immovable sovereignty of God.

  4. And this is often seen in juxtaposition to the rise and the fall of man, and it is seen by God's hand.

  5. We will see today that it is God who does the raising up and the bringing low.

  6. And thirdly, we'll see time and time again the resilient faith of Daniel and his friends in a hostile culture.

  7. Now, I'll say this theme is not well developed in this chapter of the book.

  8. It's a lesser theme, but we will see that Daniel is still serving in the court, and he is still willing to speak on behalf of God.

  9. So Daniel chapter 4, beginning at verse 1, before I read, beloved, let me remind you that this is God's Word to us.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  10. It's inspired, it's authoritative, it's sufficient.

  11. And it was written for his glory and our good.

  12. And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and obey its commands.

  13. Daniel chapter 4, beginning in verse 1.

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  14. King Nebuchadnezzar, to all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth, peace be multiplied to you.

  15. It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me.

  16. How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders.

  17. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion endures from generation to generation.

  18. I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace.

  19. I saw a dream that made me afraid.

  20. As I lay in bed, the fancies and the visions of my head alarmed me.

  21. So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me,

  22. and that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.

  23. Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in.

  24. And I told them the dream, but they could not make known to me its interpretation.

  25. At last Daniel came in before me.

  26. He who was named Beltegazar after the name of my God, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods.

  27. And I told him the dream, saying,

  28. O Beltegazar, chief of the magicians,

  29. because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and that no mystery is too difficult for you.

  30. Tell me the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation.

  31. The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these.

  32. I saw and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great.

  33. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven,

  34. and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

  35. Its leaves were beautiful, and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all.

  36. The beasts of the field found shade under it,

  37. and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was spread from it.

  38. I saw in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, a watcher, a holy one, came down from heaven.

  39. He proclaimed aloud and said thus,

  40. Chop down the tree and top off its branches.

  41. Strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit.

  42. Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches.

  43. But leave the stump of its roots in the earth,

  44. bound with a band of iron and bronze amid the tender grass of the field.

  45. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven.

  46. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth.

  47. Let his mind be changed from man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him,

  48. and let seven periods of time pass over him.

  49. The sentence is by the decree of the watchers,

  50. the decision by the word of the holy ones,

  51. to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  52. and gives it to whom he will, and sets over it the lowliest of men.

  53. This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw.

  54. And you, O Beltegazar, tell me the interpretation,

  55. because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation.

  56. But you are able, for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

  57. Then Daniel, whose name was Beltegazar, was dismayed for a while,

  58. and his thoughts alarmed him.

  59. The king answered and said,

  60. Beltegazar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.

  61. Beltegazar answered and said,

  62. My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you,

  63. and its interpretation for your enemies.

  64. The tree you saw, which grew and became strong,

  65. so that its top reached to heaven,

  66. and it was visible to the end of the whole earth,

  67. whose leaves were beautiful, and its fruit abundant,

  68. and which was food for all,

  69. under which beasts of the field found shade,

  70. and whose branches the birds of the heavens lived.

  71. It is you, O king, who have grown and become strong.

  72. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven,

  73. and your dominion to the ends of the earth.

  74. And because the king saw a watcher,

  75. a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying,

  76. Chop down the tree and destroy it,

  77. but leave the stump of its roots in the earth,

  78. bound with a band of iron and bronze,

  79. in the tender grass of the field,

  80. and let him be wet with the dew of heaven,

  81. and let his portion be with the beasts of the field,

  82. till seven periods of time pass over him.

  83. This is the interpretation, O king.

  84. It is a decree of the Most High,

  85. which has come upon my lord, the king,

  86. that you shall be driven from among men,

  87. and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.

  88. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox,

  89. and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven,

  90. and seven periods of time shall pass over you,

  91. till you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  92. and gives it to whom he will.

  93. And as it was commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree,

  94. your kingdom shall be confirmed for you

  95. from the time that you know that heaven rules.

  96. Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you.

  97. Break off your sins by practicing righteousness,

  98. and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed,

  99. that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.

  100. All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.

  101. At the end of twelve months,

  102. he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon,

  103. and the king answered and said,

  104. Is not this great Babylon which I have built by my mighty power

  105. as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?

  106. While the words were still in the king's mouth,

  107. there fell a voice from heaven,

  108. O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken.

  109. The kingdom has departed from you,

  110. and you shall be driven from among men,

  111. and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field.

  112. You shall be made to eat grass like an ox,

  113. and seven periods of time shall pass over you,

  114. until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men,

  115. and gives it to whom he will.

  116. Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar.

  117. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox,

  118. and his body was wet with the dew of heaven,

  119. till his hair grew as long as an eagle's feathers,

  120. and his nails were like bird's claws.

  121. At the end of the days,

  122. I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  123. lifted my eyes to heaven,

  124. and my reason returned to me.

  125. And I blessed the Most High

  126. and praised and honored him who lives forever,

  127. for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,

  128. and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  129. All the inhabitants of the earth

  130. are accounted as nothing,

  131. and he does according to his will

  132. among the host of heaven

  133. and among the inhabitants of the earth.

  134. And none can stay his hand

  135. or say to him,

  136. What have you done?

  137. At the same time,

  138. my reason returned to me,

  139. and for the glory of my kingdom,

  140. my majesty and splendor returned to me.

  141. My counselors and my lords sought me,

  142. and I was established in my kingdom,

  143. and still more greatness was added to me.

  144. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  145. praise and extol and honor the King of heaven,

  146. for all his works are right

  147. and his ways are just,

  148. and those who walk in pride

  149. he is able to humble.

  150. All right.

  151. We have about 30 minutes to cover the content.

  152. Of this text.

  153. Before we do,

  154. before we get into the meat of it

  155. and the driving point of it,

  156. I want to deal with the first three verses

  157. and consider how they relate to the last 34.

  158. Now there's two explanations of this.

  159. I'm going to give you the first one,

  160. which I think is a probable explanation of it,

  161. and that is that it's a precursor,

  162. it's an introduction to the rest of the story

  163. that he's in advance saying,

  164. here's the thing I intend to tell you,

  165. and then he launches into this story.

  166. It's very possible that this is the meaning of it.

  167. However, I'd like to suggest to you

  168. the more unpopular opinion,

  169. which I always hate when I hold the more unpopular opinion,

  170. and that is that the first three verses of chapter four

  171. actually belong with the end of chapter three,

  172. which is the story that we studied last week there,

  173. and I'm going to do that for a couple of reasons.

  174. Number one, the medieval translation places these verses,

  175. verses one through three, at the end of chapter three.

  176. So once upon a time, this was the case.

  177. They were chapter three, verse 31 through 34,

  178. and it was Martin Luther who changed the chapter

  179. and verse break to have chapter three end with verse 30.

  180. Now we know that chapter and verse breaks are not inspired.

  181. There's a good example of that.

  182. It was changed, so we're left with the task

  183. of figuring out how these stories carry along together.

  184. But I think it belongs with the story

  185. at the end of chapter three,

  186. the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

  187. the great idol in the plain that they were asked to worship

  188. and thrown into the fiery furnace as a result,

  189. because it contains in it a familiar phrase

  190. found in the beginning of chapter three.

  191. You see this in chapter three, verse four,

  192. people's nations and languages.

  193. So part of the command to bow down to this idol

  194. was that the people's nations and languages would do so.

  195. And then this to me seems to kind of cap off

  196. what happens there.

  197. First, he gives a decree, verse 29 of chapter three,

  198. that no one would speak against the God of Shadrach,

  199. Meshach, and Abednego.

  200. And then I suggest to you that he speaks

  201. in favor of that God.

  202. He says to all peoples, nations, and languages

  203. that dwell in all the earth,

  204. peace be multiplied to you.

  205. It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders

  206. the most high God has done for me.

  207. How great are his signs, how mighty his wonders.

  208. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

  209. and his dominion endures from generation

  210. to generation, right?

  211. So placing these three verses

  212. at the beginning of chapter four

  213. connects it to the rest of chapter four,

  214. and I think it makes Nebuchadnezzar

  215. seem a bit like a crazy person.

  216. You may have experienced this

  217. in your reading of the book of Daniel,

  218. that he just seems so back and forth.

  219. But I think what we see

  220. at the very beginning of chapter four,

  221. and I'm arguing should be the end of chapter three,

  222. I think we're actually witnessing

  223. Nebuchadnezzar's conversion.

  224. Notice the progression of things

  225. that he has said about Yahweh,

  226. about our God, the God of Daniel

  227. and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  228. In chapter two and verse 47,

  229. he says to Daniel,

  230. truly your God is God of gods

  231. and Lord of kings

  232. and a revealer of mysteries,

  233. for you have been able to reveal

  234. this mystery he's talking about

  235. the interpretation of his dream.

  236. So your God is God of gods

  237. and Lord of kings.

  238. Chapter three, verse 29,

  239. I mentioned,

  240. therefore I make a decree,

  241. any people, nation, or language

  242. that speaks anything against

  243. the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego

  244. shall be torn limb from limb

  245. and their houses laid in ruins.

  246. For there is no other God

  247. who is able to rescue in this way.

  248. So again, the God of Shadrach, Meshach,

  249. and Abednego.

  250. But then in chapter four, verse two,

  251. he says,

  252. it has seemed good to me

  253. to show the signs and wonders

  254. that the most high God

  255. has done for me.

  256. It seems that he has come to know

  257. this God.

  258. And I'm suggesting to you

  259. that it's because of the occasion

  260. that happened on the plain of Dura

  261. with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  262. Again, that we are observing

  263. the conversion of Nebuchadnezzar II.

  264. Now, quite frankly,

  265. either way you argue it,

  266. it's okay with me.

  267. But let me go a little further.

  268. Note that I referred to him

  269. as Nebuchadnezzar II.

  270. This is the Nebuchadnezzar the Great,

  271. who is the prominent historical Nebuchadnezzar.

  272. He was named after his grandfather

  273. and was the ruler under which Babylon

  274. became a great empire.

  275. Typically, when you hear

  276. Nebuchadnezzar reference,

  277. this is the Nebuchadnezzar

  278. that's being referred to.

  279. Upon his death,

  280. he was succeeded by his son,

  281. Amel Marduk,

  282. who was such a terrible ruler

  283. that he was murdered

  284. by his brother-in-law,

  285. Negal Sherazer,

  286. who ruled four years

  287. before his death.

  288. He was succeeded by his son,

  289. Labashi Marduk,

  290. who was another inept ruler.

  291. So he was assassinated

  292. after a nine-month rule

  293. and replaced with a man named Nabonidus.

  294. Now, this is extra-biblical

  295. but historical fact

  296. as far as history can be understood

  297. as factual.

  298. The Babylonians kept

  299. great historical records

  300. and this is the record

  301. that we're shown.

  302. Now, Nabonidus,

  303. in order to establish

  304. some sense of legitimacy,

  305. renamed himself

  306. Nebuchadnezzar III.

  307. He took on that name.

  308. Of interesting historical note,

  309. this is an aside,

  310. but when Saddam Hussein

  311. invaded Kuwait,

  312. he referred to himself

  313. as Nebuchadnezzar II

  314. simply because he didn't know

  315. his history well enough

  316. to know that Nebuchadnezzar II

  317. was not Nebuchadnezzar I.

  318. He was actually Nebuchadnezzar IV

  319. in that case.

  320. But in order to establish legitimacy,

  321. he was hearkening back

  322. to that Babylonian king

  323. the same way

  324. that Nabonidus was doing.

  325. Now, Nabonidus was succeeded

  326. by his son

  327. whose name was

  328. Balthazar.

  329. Nope.

  330. His name was Balthazar

  331. of chapter 5.

  332. There's no historical record

  333. that Nebuchadnezzar II

  334. had a son named Belshazzar.

  335. But there is a record

  336. that Nebuchadnezzar III

  337. had a son named Belshazzar.

  338. Now, Daniel 5, 2a reads,

  339. Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine,

  340. commanded that the vessels of gold

  341. and of silver

  342. that Nebuchadnezzar, his father,

  343. had taken out of the temple

  344. in Jerusalem be brought.

  345. And this has confused many people.

  346. And there's a lot of criticism

  347. of the book of Daniel

  348. because it doesn't line up

  349. with the historical record.

  350. Critics of the scripture

  351. used this argument to say

  352. this is not inspired.

  353. How could it be?

  354. It doesn't reconcile

  355. with the historical record.

  356. But the word translated

  357. his father

  358. in our English translations

  359. could also be translated

  360. his predecessor.

  361. So the Nebuchadnezzar

  362. that came before him.

  363. And that's very easily resolved.

  364. So this brings me

  365. to my second unpopular opinion.

  366. I don't know how many of you

  367. listen to podcasts

  368. or audio books,

  369. but do you ever listen to it

  370. at like one and a half speed?

  371. I feel like that's what I'm doing

  372. right now.

  373. For the sake of time.

  374. I hope you're hanging with me.

  375. My second unpopular opinion

  376. is this.

  377. That the Nebuchadnezzar

  378. of chapter 4

  379. verses 4 through 37

  380. is Nebuchadnezzar the third,

  381. not Nebuchadnezzar the second.

  382. Different Nebuchadnezzars.

  383. I'm going to give you

  384. a couple of arguments

  385. to this end

  386. and then I'll tell you

  387. why it matters at all.

  388. Why it matters a little bit.

  389. Number one,

  390. I've been really geeking out

  391. over the past two weeks

  392. over this.

  393. The Nebuchadnezzar

  394. of 4, 4 through 37

  395. has a dream, right?

  396. We see him having a dream.

  397. We know that Nebuchadnezzar

  398. has had another dream

  399. back in chapter 2.

  400. But this time,

  401. or this man,

  402. doesn't call Daniel alone

  403. to interpret the dream,

  404. but instead issues a decree.

  405. This is verse 6 and 7,

  406. that the wise men of Babylon

  407. should be brought before me,

  408. that they would make known

  409. the interpretation.

  410. So verse 7 says,

  411. the magicians,

  412. the enchanters,

  413. the Chaldeans,

  414. the astrologers.

  415. We've seen this happen

  416. before in chapter 2.

  417. Why would the Nebuchadnezzar

  418. of chapter 2

  419. call the same people

  420. who were unable to help him

  421. with that dream?

  422. If you recall in chapter 2,

  423. he wasn't even willing

  424. to tell them the dream

  425. because he thought

  426. they would just trick him.

  427. They would come up

  428. with some interpretation

  429. and it may or may not be.

  430. He wanted them to tell him

  431. the dream

  432. and they couldn't.

  433. And Daniel comes on the scene

  434. and is able to do so.

  435. So why would this Nebuchadnezzar

  436. do what he did?

  437. It doesn't make any sense

  438. that he has forgotten

  439. everything that happened

  440. the last time he had a dream

  441. and doesn't just call Daniel.

  442. Like, hey, Daniel,

  443. you're still in my court.

  444. You're the guy

  445. that interprets dreams.

  446. Secondly,

  447. the Nebuchadnezzar of 4,

  448. 4 through 37

  449. does not seem to know

  450. the God of Daniel.

  451. We've seen in chapter 2

  452. and in chapter 3,

  453. I'm arguing the beginning

  454. of chapter 4,

  455. some expression that he does know

  456. this God of Daniel.

  457. He knows that Daniel

  458. worships a single God.

  459. in verses 8 and 9

  460. of chapter 4,

  461. this Nebuchadnezzar

  462. refers to

  463. the spirit

  464. of the holy gods

  465. that he believes

  466. are in Daniel.

  467. It's like he's heard

  468. a rumor

  469. that Daniel

  470. has this spirit

  471. and this ability,

  472. but he doesn't actually know

  473. where to locate

  474. its source.

  475. It doesn't make

  476. a lot of sense.

  477. How do we reconcile

  478. this with the Nebuchadnezzar

  479. of chapter 2's statement,

  480. verse 47?

  481. Again,

  482. truly your God

  483. is God of gods

  484. and Lord of kings,

  485. a revealer of mysteries,

  486. for you have been able

  487. to reveal this mystery.

  488. He goes from

  489. that grand statement

  490. in chapter 2

  491. to I've heard

  492. you have these

  493. holy gods

  494. that dwell in you.

  495. Third,

  496. in chapter 4

  497. in verse 30,

  498. this Nebuchadnezzar says,

  499. is not this great Babylon

  500. which I have built

  501. by my piety power

  502. as a royal residence

  503. and for the glory

  504. of my majesty.

  505. Right?

  506. So many argue

  507. that this must be

  508. Nebuchadnezzar II,

  509. but Nebuchadnezzar II

  510. didn't build Babylon.

  511. He just built it

  512. to its prominence.

  513. He built it up

  514. so possibly

  515. this is what he's saying.

  516. I have made it

  517. what it now is.

  518. However,

  519. when Nebuchadnezzar III

  520. took the throne,

  521. he decided to build

  522. a new palace

  523. and a new capital city

  524. in a place called Temmah.

  525. If my memory is

  526. serving me right,

  527. about 60 miles south

  528. of the prominent

  529. Nebuchadnezzar II,

  530. Babylon,

  531. and it was renamed

  532. Babylon.

  533. It became the new Babylon

  534. there.

  535. fourth,

  536. there's no historical record

  537. of Nebuchadnezzar II

  538. disappearing for seven years.

  539. Seven periods,

  540. the text says.

  541. In fact,

  542. there are many records

  543. indicating that he was

  544. present and active

  545. for the entirety

  546. of his reign.

  547. There's documentation

  548. that is still

  549. in the account.

  550. Now,

  551. it's possible

  552. that that was

  553. fabricated,

  554. that it's kind of

  555. a cover-up.

  556. We don't want anybody

  557. to think that our king

  558. was insane for seven years.

  559. Very possible

  560. explanation to that.

  561. But,

  562. this doesn't reconcile

  563. with the attitude

  564. of the Nebuchadnezzar

  565. of chapter 4.

  566. The very last verse,

  567. he says,

  568. Now I,

  569. Nebuchadnezzar,

  570. praise and extol

  571. and honor the king

  572. of heaven,

  573. for all his works

  574. are right

  575. and his ways

  576. are just,

  577. and those who walk

  578. in pride

  579. he is able

  580. to humble.

  581. It would seem

  582. that he would want

  583. it to be known

  584. of this God.

  585. This God

  586. had humbled him

  587. and in this way.

  588. When Nebuchadnezzar III

  589. moved the capital

  590. to Timah

  591. and called it Babylon,

  592. he left

  593. at the old capital

  594. his son,

  595. Belshazzar.

  596. He was left behind

  597. in Belshazzar

  598. to kind of co-rule

  599. with him.

  600. And we have records

  601. of communication

  602. between him

  603. and his son,

  604. except for a gap

  605. in time.

  606. Guess how long

  607. the gap in time is?

  608. Seven years.

  609. There's a silence.

  610. And it could be

  611. for any other reason.

  612. Maybe it was lost,

  613. burned up,

  614. dropped on a river.

  615. I mean,

  616. there could be

  617. some other reason,

  618. but it's so interesting

  619. that for seven years

  620. there appears

  621. to be a silence

  622. between Nebuchadnezzar III,

  623. Nabodidus,

  624. and his son,

  625. Belshazzar.

  626. So I think

  627. that this Nebuchadnezzar

  628. is different

  629. from that Nebuchadnezzar

  630. of chapters 1

  631. through chapter 4

  632. and verse 3.

  633. And so I'm going

  634. to call him

  635. Nabodidus

  636. from now on.

  637. But why does this matter?

  638. Okay, so why?

  639. Why did I just spend

  640. the first 15 minutes

  641. of this

  642. in one and a half speed

  643. telling you this?

  644. I don't think

  645. it matters ultimately,

  646. right?

  647. So you could just

  648. flatly disagree with me

  649. and go,

  650. not a chance.

  651. As I stated,

  652. it's the more

  653. unpopular opinion

  654. of the text.

  655. You can still learn

  656. the prominent point

  657. of chapter 4

  658. and disagree with me

  659. on this matter.

  660. But two possible reasons

  661. I think it does matter.

  662. I mentioned to you already

  663. the scholarly argument

  664. against the veracity

  665. of the Old Testament.

  666. This is one of those.

  667. Daniel is historically

  668. inaccurate.

  669. It's very confusing

  670. as you try to parse

  671. through all of that.

  672. How is it that

  673. there's a Belshazzar?

  674. We have no record

  675. of a son named Belshazzar,

  676. etc.

  677. Those things become

  678. problematic in believing

  679. that this is in fact

  680. the Word of God.

  681. And the Word of God

  682. is both inspired

  683. and it's an accurate history.

  684. So I think it's helpful

  685. for us to reconcile

  686. these types of things.

  687. The other,

  688. and I think more important

  689. reason that I'm making

  690. this case,

  691. is that I think

  692. it displays for us

  693. kind of the manifold

  694. mercy of God.

  695. It seems to me,

  696. in my estimation,

  697. that it's not just

  698. one proud king,

  699. one idolatrous king,

  700. one oppressive king

  701. that God is merciful to,

  702. brings to humility,

  703. I think brings to salvation,

  704. but it's actually two.

  705. That God uses Daniel

  706. and his friends

  707. and their perseverance,

  708. or faithful perseverance,

  709. in a hostile culture,

  710. to display his grace

  711. and mercy.

  712. I think that it's

  713. a reverberation

  714. of the promise

  715. made to Abraham

  716. in Genesis chapter 22

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  717. and verse 18,

  718. in your offspring

  719. shall all the nations

  720. of the earth

  721. be blessed.

  722. So that's how

  723. it warms my heart

  724. to think,

  725. I think this is

  726. a different guy,

  727. another guy

  728. that God

  729. is merciful to,

  730. another proud man

  731. that deserves

  732. the condemnation

  733. of God

  734. and yet is shown

  735. his mercy.

  736. So,

  737. here's the outline

  738. for our study

  739. this morning.

  740. Three points

  741. to develop

  742. the last one

  743. very brief.

  744. First,

  745. the prideful rise

  746. of Nabonidus.

  747. You'll have to guess

  748. on the spelling.

  749. Second,

  750. the humbling fall

  751. of Nabonidus.

  752. And third,

  753. the humbling rise.

  754. of Nabonidus.

  755. First,

  756. the prideful rise.

  757. This whole episode

  758. in the book of Daniel,

  759. all of that language,

  760. the repetition

  761. is meant to make

  762. the point

  763. that Nabonidus

  764. is told in this dream,

  765. this is the point,

  766. to the end,

  767. this is the last part

  768. of verse 17,

  769. to the end

  770. that the living

  771. may know

  772. that the Most High

  773. rules the kingdom

  774. of men

  775. and gives it

  776. to whom he will

  777. and sets over it

  778. the lowliest

  779. of men.

  780. This is the point

  781. of all

  782. of chapter

  783. four,

  784. right?

  785. Nabonidus

  786. is going to be

  787. humbled

  788. because

  789. God

  790. is to be known.

  791. Nabonidus

  792. had yet

  793. to understand

  794. that while

  795. he was a ruler,

  796. his rule

  797. was subject

  798. to the King

  799. of Kings

  800. and the Lord

  801. of Lords.

  802. he did not

  803. know

  804. the Most High

  805. God

  806. and he did not

  807. know

  808. of his

  809. absolute

  810. reign.

  811. He was

  812. very

  813. proud.

  814. Recall

  815. verses 29

  816. and 30.

  817. At the end

  818. of 12 months

  819. he was walking

  820. on the roof

  821. of the royal palace

  822. of Babylon

  823. and the king

  824. answered and said,

  825. is not this

  826. great Babylon

  827. which I have built

  828. by my mighty power

  829. and as a royal residence

  830. and for the glory

  831. of my majesty.

  832. So a full

  833. year later,

  834. maybe he even

  835. tried to keep

  836. the pride in check

  837. for a little while

  838. after Daniel's

  839. interpretation,

  840. but a full year later

  841. he has this moment

  842. of great pride.

  843. Look at what

  844. I have done.

  845. Look at my

  846. power.

  847. Look at my

  848. majesty.

  849. We can't be sure

  850. if anyone was with him

  851. on the roof.

  852. Perhaps

  853. somebody was.

  854. Whether he actually

  855. said this out loud

  856. or not,

  857. but it makes

  858. no difference

  859. because this

  860. was the posture

  861. of his

  862. heart.

  863. He thought

  864. that it was

  865. by his might,

  866. by his power,

  867. by his majesty

  868. that he had

  869. accomplished

  870. these

  871. things.

  872. You wouldn't

  873. say or think

  874. such a thing

  875. if you did not

  876. believe it

  877. to be true.

  878. Now it may be

  879. easy for us

  880. to not find

  881. ourselves in the text

  882. at this point.

  883. None of us

  884. are kings.

  885. I'm quite sure

  886. of that.

  887. None of us

  888. have built

  889. a city.

  890. I'm quite sure

  891. a palace.

  892. I'm quite sure

  893. of that.

  894. Some of our homes

  895. are bigger than

  896. others,

  897. but no palaces.

  898. I'm fairly

  899. confident.

  900. But we should be

  901. so careful

  902. at this point

  903. because we

  904. have all

  905. been proud

  906. like Nabonidus.

  907. Every one

  908. of us.

  909. We have all

  910. given ourselves

  911. credit for

  912. things that

  913. the Lord

  914. accomplished.

  915. We have said

  916. in our hearts,

  917. many of us

  918. have said

  919. out loud,

  920. look at my

  921. accomplishments.

  922. Look at the

  923. game I won.

  924. Look at the

  925. grades I

  926. achieved.

  927. Look at the

  928. house that I

  929. built.

  930. Look at the

  931. promotion that I

  932. earned.

  933. Look at the

  934. way I

  935. look.

  936. Look at the

  937. sermon I

  938. preach.

  939. Look at my

  940. power.

  941. Look at my

  942. majesty.

  943. We have all

  944. done this

  945. in various

  946. ways.

  947. Be very

  948. careful to

  949. not be

  950. dismissive of

  951. these types

  952. of attitudes

  953. in your

  954. heart.

  955. The Lord

  956. takes this

  957. kind of thing

  958. seriously.

  959. In Proverbs

  960. 16, 5,

  961. we read,

  962. everyone who

  963. is arrogant

  964. in heart

  965. is an

  966. abomination

  967. to the

  968. Lord.

  969. Be assured

  970. he will

  971. not go

  972. unpunished.

  973. This

  974. attitude of

  975. heart of

  976. Nabonidus

  977. was before

  978. he was

  979. humbled.

  980. It was

  981. before he

  982. knew the

  983. Lord.

  984. In the

  985. last part of

  986. verse 32,

  987. God tells

  988. Nabonidus

  989. that he

  990. will punish

  991. him until

  992. you know

  993. that the

  994. Most High

  995. rules the

  996. kingdom of

  997. men and

  998. gives it to

  999. whom he

  1000. will.

  1001. God in

  1002. his great

  1003. mercy does

  1004. something

  1005. severe to

  1006. Nabonidus so

  1007. that Nabonidus

  1008. will know

  1009. him.

  1010. He makes

  1011. him crazy,

  1012. drives him

  1013. mad for

  1014. seven periods,

  1015. I believe,

  1016. because of the

  1017. historical text,

  1018. seven years.

  1019. If you are

  1020. proud this

  1021. morning,

  1022. know that

  1023. God has the

  1024. power to

  1025. drive you

  1026. mad.

  1027. He could

  1028. turn you

  1029. into a

  1030. cow so

  1031. that you

  1032. might know

  1033. him.

  1034. And it's

  1035. very possible

  1036. that he

  1037. may just

  1038. do so,

  1039. but know

  1040. also that

  1041. he may

  1042. have brought

  1043. you to

  1044. church,

  1045. something much

  1046. more kind,

  1047. at least I

  1048. hope you

  1049. experience it

  1050. that way,

  1051. so that you

  1052. can hear about

  1053. the madness

  1054. of Nabonidus,

  1055. that you will

  1056. see your own

  1057. pride and that

  1058. you will throw

  1059. yourself on the

  1060. mercy of God

  1061. as found in

  1062. the person and

  1063. work of

  1064. Jesus Christ.

  1065. Don't be so

  1066. proud that

  1067. God has to

  1068. drive you mad

  1069. to bring you

  1070. to him.

  1071. Know that he

  1072. may already

  1073. be at work

  1074. in your heart

  1075. even now to

  1076. bring you to

  1077. humility that

  1078. you might know

  1079. him.

  1080. God in his

  1081. great mercy

  1082. did something

  1083. severe to

  1084. Jesus Christ

  1085. by punishing

  1086. him on the

  1087. cross so

  1088. that we can

  1089. know him,

  1090. so that we

  1091. to be brought

  1092. to God

  1093. in Christ.

  1094. And be

  1095. assured,

  1096. if you are

  1097. not humble

  1098. now,

  1099. you will

  1100. one day

  1101. be humbled.

  1102. Jesus,

  1103. in speaking of

  1104. the final

  1105. judgment in

  1106. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  1107. 23,

  1108. says,

  1109. whoever exalts

  1110. himself will

  1111. be humbled,

  1112. and whoever

  1113. humbles himself

  1114. will be

  1115. exalted.

  1116. Beloved,

  1117. those of us

  1118. who know the

  1119. Lord have all

  1120. the more reason

  1121. to not be

  1122. proud.

  1123. All the more.

  1124. we can't

  1125. hardly blame

  1126. Nabonidus for

  1127. being proud.

  1128. He didn't

  1129. know the

  1130. Lord.

  1131. He didn't

  1132. understand God's

  1133. majesty,

  1134. but we do.

  1135. If we are ever

  1136. proud, it is

  1137. because we have

  1138. forgotten who we

  1139. once were and

  1140. what we deserved.

  1141. I ask my boys

  1142. quite often,

  1143. what do you

  1144. deserve?

  1145. And the answer

  1146. is death and

  1147. hell.

  1148. That's the answer.

  1149. We should make

  1150. us so very

  1151. thankful for

  1152. the burned

  1153. grilled cheese.

  1154. Right?

  1155. Praise the

  1156. Lord.

  1157. This is not

  1158. death and

  1159. hell.

  1160. It's just

  1161. slightly burned

  1162. grilled cheese.

  1163. We have to

  1164. have a

  1165. perspective to

  1166. understand.

  1167. When we are

  1168. proud, we

  1169. have forgotten

  1170. who we once

  1171. were and what

  1172. we deserve.

  1173. We have

  1174. forgotten that

  1175. we were wretched

  1176. rebels and that

  1177. it would be

  1178. just, it would

  1179. be right for

  1180. God to punish

  1181. us forever.

  1182. If we are

  1183. ever proud,

  1184. beloved, we

  1185. should only be

  1186. proud in our

  1187. God.

  1188. This is the

  1189. place of

  1190. boasting for

  1191. the Christian.

  1192. Listen to

  1193. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 9:23

  1194. 9 verse 23

  1195. and following.

  1196. Thus says the

  1197. Lord, let not

  1198. the wise man

  1199. boast in his

  1200. wisdom.

  1201. Let not the

  1202. mighty man

  1203. boast in his

  1204. might.

  1205. Let not the

  1206. rich man

  1207. boast in his

  1208. riches.

  1209. But let him

  1210. who boasts

  1211. boast in

  1212. this.

  1213. This is so

  1214. good.

  1215. That he

  1216. understands and

  1217. knows me.

  1218. That I am the

  1219. Lord who

  1220. practices steadfast

  1221. love, justice,

  1222. and righteousness

  1223. in the earth.

  1224. For in these

  1225. things I

  1226. delight, declares

  1227. the Lord.

  1228. And I think you

  1229. could track that

  1230. backwards.

  1231. God delights in

  1232. being steadfast in

  1233. his love, his

  1234. justice, and his

  1235. righteousness.

  1236. Right?

  1237. And it's that that

  1238. we're supposed to

  1239. understand and

  1240. to know.

  1241. This is the

  1242. reason for our

  1243. boasting and

  1244. nothing else.

  1245. So that's the

  1246. prideful rise of

  1247. Nabonidus.

  1248. We also can

  1249. observe the

  1250. humbling fall of

  1251. Nabonidus.

  1252. Nabonidus loses

  1253. his mind.

  1254. Right?

  1255. And note, it's

  1256. important for us to

  1257. see that God is

  1258. sovereign even over

  1259. the mind of man.

  1260. Nabonidus.

  1261. The first part of

  1262. verse 34, at the

1263. end of the days, I

  1264. Nebuchadnezzar lifted

1265. my eyes to heaven and

  1266. my reason returned to

  1267. me.

1268. That is to say, he

  1269. was able to think

  1270. rightly.

1271. And what is it that

  1272. he thinks?

1273. What is it that he

  1274. now knows that he's

  1275. able to think rightly?

1276. He says in the rest of

  1277. verse 34 and

  1278. following, and I

  1279. blessed the Most

  1280. High and praised

  1281. and honored him

  1282. who lives forever.

  1283. For his dominion is

  1284. an everlasting

  1285. dominion and his

  1286. kingdom endures from

  1287. generation to

  1288. generation.

  1289. All the inhabitants

  1290. of the earth are

  1291. accounted as

  1292. nothing.

  1293. And he does

  1294. according to his

  1295. will among the

  1296. hosts of heaven and

  1297. among the inhabitants

  1298. of the earth.

  1299. And none can stay

  1300. his hand or stop

  1301. what he's doing and

  1302. say to him, what

  1303. have you done?

  1304. What does

  1305. Nabonidus now know

  1306. rightly?

  1307. That God is worthy

  1308. of praise and honor

  1309. and not man.

  1310. That God is absolute

  1311. and forever the ruler

  1312. and not man.

  1313. That man is nothing

  1314. in comparison and is

  1315. subject to God's reign.

  1316. That God's sovereignty

  1317. is immovable.

  1318. And that man doesn't

  1319. even have the right

  1320. to question God's

  1321. rule.

  1322. What humility.

  1323. What an expression

  1324. of humility.

  1325. I wonder, are our

  1326. hearts marked with

  1327. this measure of

  1328. humility?

  1329. Nabonidus has been

  1330. driven mad.

  1331. Right?

  1332. He spent seven years.

  1333. He doesn't even seem

  1334. like he's recognizable

  1335. any longer.

  1336. Right?

  1337. He ate grass.

  1338. Just think about it.

  1339. For seven years he

  1340. lived outside and he

  1341. ate grass like an

  1342. ox.

  1343. But he does not

  1344. ask of God.

  1345. He's not concerned

  1346. about the quote

  1347. unquote wasted

  1348. years of his life.

  1349. He does not question

  1350. whether or not this

  1351. lesson could have been

  1352. learned in another

  1353. way.

  1354. He does not question

  1355. God's control or

  1356. God's goodness.

  1357. goodness.

1358. And I just have to

  1359. confess, I think I

  1360. would have.

  1361. Really, Lord?

  1362. Seven years?

  1363. It took that?

  1364. It took me being

  1365. insane for this long

1366. for you to teach me

  1367. this lesson?

  1368. Nabonidus accepts it.

  1369. Apparently it does

1370. take this long to teach

  1371. me this lesson.

  1372. It does not question

  1373. God's control or his

  1374. goodness.

  1375. Listen to the final

  1376. verse of the chapter.

  1377. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar,

  1378. praise and extol and

  1379. honor the King of

  1380. Heaven.

  1381. For all his works

  1382. are right.

  1383. And his ways

  1384. are just.

  1385. And those who walk

  1386. in pride, he is

  1387. able to

  1388. humble.

  1389. He praises him

  1390. because he's good

  1391. and he's just

  1392. and he's in

  1393. control

  1394. and because

  1395. he humbled

  1396. Nabonidus.

1397. And then we see a

  1398. restoration, thirdly.

  1399. The humbling rise

  1400. of

  1401. Nabonidus.

  1402. So now that he's

  1403. humble, God

  1404. gives back to him

  1405. the kingdom.

  1406. It's a worthy

  1407. note that God

  1408. is good to

  1409. his word.

  1410. It's what he saw

  1411. in the dreams.

  1412. What the Holy

  1413. One told him

  1414. would happen.

  1415. So upon his

  1416. humbling, his

  1417. kingdom is

  1418. restored.

  1419. Verse 36 says,

  1420. at the same time

  1421. my reason returned

  1422. to me and for

  1423. the glory of my

  1424. kingdom, my

  1425. majesty and

  1426. splendor returned

  1427. to me.

  1428. He even says

  1429. that more

  1430. greatness was

  1431. added to

  1432. him.

  1433. Now, we

  1434. live in a

  1435. different economy

  1436. of God's

  1437. grace.

  1438. Largely the

  1439. way that we

  1440. are blessed

  1441. now in Christ

  1442. is through

  1443. spiritual matters.

  1444. We are looking

  1445. to a heavenly

  1446. reward.

  1447. In these days,

  1448. often the way

  1449. God blessed

  1450. his people

  1451. and others

  1452. is that he

  1453. gave them

  1454. dominion.

  1455. He gave

  1456. them possession.

  1457. He showed

  1458. that he was

  1459. for them

  1460. in the things

  1461. that they had

  1462. and we should

  1463. be careful

  1464. that we

  1465. don't learn

  1466. that lesson

  1467. from Nabonidus.

  1468. Remember Jesus

  1469. again, Matthew

  1470. 23 and

  1471. verse 12.

  1472. Speaking of

  1473. final judgment,

  1474. he says,

  1475. whoever exalts

  1476. himself will

  1477. be humbled

  1478. and whoever

  1479. humbles himself

  1480. will be

  1481. exalted.

  1482. He's talking

  1483. about future

  1484. glory.

  1485. The last

  1486. will be

  1487. first and

  1488. the first

  1489. will be

  1490. last.

  1491. I hope

  1492. that you'll

  1493. join with

  1494. me in

  1495. desiring to

  1496. be the

  1497. last so

  1498. that someday

  1499. I can be

  1500. the first

  1501. so that I

  1502. will have

  1503. exaltation

  1504. even as I

  1505. have humility

  1506. here.

  1507. And we

  1508. don't really

  1509. need to

  1510. look to

  1511. the life

  1512. of

  1513. Nabonidus

  1514. or

  1515. Nebuchadnezzar

  1516. if you

  1517. prefer.

  1518. We have

  1519. in the

  1520. Lord Jesus

  1521. Christ

  1522. the greatest

  1523. example

  1524. of humility.

  1525. And so

  1526. I'll close

  1527. with a reading

  1528. from Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1529. chapter 2.

  1530. This is

  1531. verse 3

  1532. and following.

  1533. Do nothing

  1534. from selfish

  1535. ambition

  1536. or conceit

  1537. but in

  1538. humility

  1539. count others

  1540. more significant

  1541. than yourselves.

  1542. Let each

  1543. of you

  1544. look not

  1545. only to

  1546. his own

  1547. interests

  1548. but also

  1549. to the

  1550. interests

  1551. of others.

  1552. Have this

  1553. mind among

  1554. yourself

  1555. which is

  1556. yours

  1557. in Christ

  1558. Jesus

  1559. who

  1560. though he

  1561. was in

  1562. the form

  1563. of God

  1564. did not

  1565. count

  1566. equality

  1567. with God

  1568. a thing

  1569. to be

  1570. grasped

  1571. but emptied

  1572. himself

  1573. by taking

  1574. the form

  1575. of a servant

  1576. being born

  1577. in the likeness

  1578. of men

  1579. and being

  1580. found in

  1581. human form

  1582. he humbled

  1583. himself

  1584. by becoming

  1585. obedient to

  1586. the point

  1587. of death

  1588. even death

  1589. on a cross

  1590. therefore

  1591. God has

  1592. highly exalted

  1593. him and bestowed

  1594. on him the name

  1595. that is above

  1596. every name

  1597. so that the name

  1598. of Jesus

  1599. every knee

  1600. should bow

  1601. in heaven

  1602. on earth

  1603. and under

  1604. the earth

  1605. and every

  1606. tongue

  1607. confess that

  1608. Jesus Christ

  1609. is Lord

  1610. to the glory

  1611. of God

  1612. the Father

  1613. let's pray

  1614. together

  1615. God
