  1. We're in CFC, we're going to be in Daniel chapter 6, starting verse 1 this morning.

    Daniel 6 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And so we're going to begin in verse 1, picking up where we left off last week.

  4. Daniel 6, 1 reads,

  5. It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom 120 satraps to be throughout the whole kingdom,

  6. and over them three presidents, of whom Daniel was one,

  7. to whom these satraps should give account, so that the king might suffer no loss.

  8. Then this Daniel became distinguished above all other presidents and satraps,

  9. because an excellent spirit was in him.

  10. And the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.

  11. Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel

  12. with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault,

  13. because he was faithful.

  14. And no error or fault was found in him.

  15. Then these men said,

  16. We shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel,

  17. unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.

  18. Then these presidents and satraps came by agreement to the king and said to him,

  19. O King Darius, live forever.

  20. All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the counselors and the governors,

  21. are agreed that the king should establish an ordinance and enforce an injunction,

  22. that whoever makes petition to any god or man for thirty days,

  23. except to you, O King, shall be cast into the den of lions.

  24. Now, O King, establish the injunction and sign the document,

  25. so that it cannot be changed according to the law of the Medes and the Persians,

  26. which cannot be revoked.

  27. Therefore, King Darius signed the document and injunction.

  28. When Daniel knew that the document had been signed,

  29. he went to his house,

  30. where he had windows in his upper chamber,

  31. open toward Jerusalem.

  32. He got down on his knees three times a day

  33. and prayed and gave thanks before his God,

  34. as he had done previously.

  35. Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God.

  36. Then they came near and said before the king concerning the injunction,

  37. O King, did you not sign an injunction that anyone who makes petition to any god or man

  38. within thirty days, except to you, O King,

  39. shall be cast into the den of lions?

  40. The king answered and said,

  41. The thing stands fast according to the law of the Medes and Persians,

  42. which cannot be revoked.

  43. Then they answered and said before the king,

  44. Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,

  45. pays no attention to you, O King,

  46. or the injunction you have signed,

  47. but makes his petition three times a day.

  48. Then the king, when he heard these words,

  49. was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel.

  50. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.

  51. Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king,

  52. Know, O King, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians

  53. that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.

  54. Then the king commanded, and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions.

  55. The king declared to Daniel,

  56. May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you.

  57. And a stone was brought and laid on the mouth of the den,

  58. and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lord's,

  59. that nothing might be changed concerning Daniel.

  60. Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting.

  61. No diversions were brought to him, and sleep fled from him.

  62. Then, at break of day, the king arose and went in haste to the den of lions.

  63. As he came near to the den where Daniel was, he cried out in a tone of anguish.

  64. The king declared to Daniel,

  65. O Daniel, servant of the living God,

  66. has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?

  67. And then Daniel said to the king,

  68. O king, live forever.

  69. My God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths,

  70. and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him.

  71. And also before you, O king, I have done no harm.

  72. Then the king was exceedingly glad and commanded that Daniel be taken up out of the den.

  73. So Daniel was taken up out of the den,

  74. and no kind of harm was found on him,

  75. because he had trusted in his God.

  76. And the king commanded,

  77. and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel

  78. were brought and cast into the den of lions,

  79. their children and their wives.

  80. And before they reached the bottom of the den,

  81. the lions overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces.

  82. Then King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages

  83. that dwell in all the earth,

  84. Peace be multiplied to you.

  85. I make a decree that in all my royal dominion,

  86. people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

  87. For he is the living God, enduring forever.

  88. His kingdom shall never be destroyed,

  89. and his dominion shall be to the end.

  90. He delivers and rescues.

  91. He works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth.

  92. He who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

  93. So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius

  94. and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

  95. So, first point,

  96. God is still working to fulfill his covenants.

  97. I made this point last time I preached,

  98. and I think it's worth making again,

  99. because we see that all throughout Daniel

  100. and really, truly all throughout the entire Bible.

  101. But at the beginning, we're introduced to Darius.

  102. He's taken over the kingdom, as I mentioned.

  103. And many scholars have concluded that Darius in Daniel 6

  104. is the same person as Cyrus.

  105. Darius can simply mean Lord.

  106. It can be a title.

  107. Verse 28 makes it clear that Cyrus and Darius

  108. were ruling the Meadow Persian Empire at the same time.

  109. So it's for these reasons and others

  110. that I think this is the same person.

  111. And in verses 1 through 3,

  112. we see Daniel prospering significantly.

  113. He is climbing power, stature, respect, and authority

  114. for the second time.

  115. He already did it in Babylon.

  116. Now he's doing it in the Meadow Persian Empire.

  117. And because Darius sees Daniel's worth.

  118. Verse 3, this is because an excellent spirit was within Daniel.

  119. And I think this is the Holy Spirit empowering,

  120. enabling Daniel to perform all the wise, sound,

  121. and miraculous things that we've seen him do

  122. throughout the book of Daniel.

  123. So what does this have to do with the covenants?

  124. And for that, you kind of have to look at the historical context.

  125. So Cyrus is the king who allows the Hebrew people

  126. to return to Israel and build the temple.

  127. Ezra chapter 1 and chapter 6

    Ezra 1 chapter mention

  128. show Cyrus paying for the rebuilt temple.

  129. It shows Cyrus sending Jews back to Israel

  130. to inhabit the land and to remain there.

  131. And it also shows that the gold and silver

  132. that Nebuchadnezzar stole was to be returned to the temple.

  133. Significantly, Cyrus returned many of the Jews

  134. and did all these things in his first year of ruling Babylon,

  135. roughly 539 to 537 BC.

  136. So this means he did this right around the time

  137. that the lion's den occurs.

  138. What we just read is happening amidst this work.

  139. And it is highly likely that Daniel was the voice

  140. and perhaps even the writer

  141. who produced the legislation that Cyrus signed into decree

  142. to allow Israel to do these things.

  143. So notice God is using Daniel in this position of authority,

  144. this position that he has with Cyrus, with Darius,

  145. to provide safe passage for God's people

  146. to the promised land.

  147. And this is screaming of the Abrahamic covenant,

  148. which again, I talked about this last time,

  149. but three things comprise that covenant.

  150. The people are secure in their offspring and are continuing.

  151. They have land,

  152. and they are a universal blessing to the nations.

  153. So catch this.

  154. Even though God directly used Babylon and Meadow Persia

  155. to punish Israel for their wickedness in the exile,

  156. God never intended to turn his back

  157. on his covenants with them.

  158. Turn with me real quickly to Isaiah 45.

  159. I'm going to read the whole chapter,

  160. so you're going to want to turn there.

  161. And we're going there because you're going to see

  162. that God has always intended to fulfill his covenants,

  163. even in the midst of proclaiming his judgment

  164. on Israel and Judah.

  165. Isaiah 45.

  166. Isaiah 45.

  167. Thus says the Lord to his anointed,

  168. to Cyrus,

  169. whose right hand I have grasped,

  170. to subdue nations, including Babylon,

  171. before him and to loose the belts of kings,

  172. including Nebuchadnezzar,

  173. to open doors before him

  174. that gates may not be closed,

  175. and recall, this is interesting,

  176. but recall what Clay said last week

  177. about Herodotus, the Greek historian.

  178. He recorded that the Persians took over Babylon quickly.

  179. They snuck in through some open gates

  180. near the water well

  181. and were able to emerge right up in the palace.

  182. So this verse is fascinating,

  183. that gates may not be closed.

  184. In other words, God opened those gates.

  185. He made those gates left open

  186. so that Babylon would be taken overnight.

  187. And back in verse 2,

  188. I will go before you

  189. and level the exalted places.

  190. This is God talking to Cyrus.

  191. I will break in pieces the doors of bronze

  192. and cut through the bars of iron.

  193. I will give you the treasures of darkness

  194. and the hordes and secret places

  195. that you may know that it is I,

  196. the Lord, the God of Israel,

  197. who call you by your name.

  198. Verse 4.

  199. For the sake of my servant Jacob

  200. and Israel my chosen,

  201. I call you by your name.

  202. I name you though you do not know me.

  203. So again, recall Isaiah is recording this prophecy

  204. long before Cyrus exists.

  205. This is before the Babylonian captivity even.

  206. Picking back up in verse 5.

  207. I am the Lord and there is no other.

  208. Besides me there is no God.

  209. I equip you though you do not know me

  210. that people may know

  211. from the rising of the sun from the west

  212. that there is none besides me.

  213. I am the Lord and there is no other.

  214. I form light and create darkness.

  215. I make well-being and create calamity.

  216. I am the Lord who does all these things.

  217. Shower, O heavens, from above

  218. and let the clouds rain down righteousness.

  219. Let the earth open that salvation

  220. and righteousness may bear fruit.

  221. Let the earth cause them both to sprout.

  222. I, the Lord, have created it.

  223. And woe to him who strives with him

  224. who formed him a pot among earthen pots.

  225. Does the clay say to him who forms it,

  226. what are you making?

  227. Or your work has no handles.

  228. Woe to him who says to a father,

  229. what are you begetting?

  230. Or to a woman, with what are you in labor?

  231. Thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel

  232. and the one who formed him.

  233. Ask me of things to come.

  234. Will you command me concerning my children

  235. and the work of my hands?

  236. I made the earth and created man on it.

  237. It was my hands that stretched out the heavens

  238. and I commanded all their hosts.

  239. I have stirred him up in righteousness

  240. and I will make all his ways level.

  241. He, Cyrus, shall build my city

  242. and set my exiles free,

  243. not for price or reward,

  244. says the Lord of hosts.

  245. Thus says the Lord,

  246. the wealth of Egypt

  247. and the merchandise of Cush

  248. and the Sabaeans,

  249. men of stature,

  250. shall come over to you and be yours.

  251. They shall follow you.

  252. They shall come over in chains

  253. and bow down to you.

  254. They will plead with you saying,

  255. surely God is in you

  256. and there is no other.

  257. No God besides him.

  258. Truly you are a God who hides himself,

  259. O God of Israel, the Savior.

  260. All of them are put to shame and confounded.

  261. The makers of idols go in confusion together.

  262. But Israel is saved by the Lord

  263. with everlasting salvation.

  264. You shall not be put to shame

  265. or confounded to all eternity.

  266. For thus says the Lord

  267. who created the heavens,

  268. He is God,

  269. who formed the earth and made it.

  270. He established it

  271. and He did not create it empty.

  272. He formed it to be inhabited.

  273. I am the Lord

  274. and there is no other.

  275. I did not speak in secret

  276. in a land of darkness.

  277. I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,

  278. seek me in vain.

  279. I, the Lord, speak the truth.

  280. I declare what is right.

  281. Assemble yourselves and come.

  282. Draw near together,

  283. you survivors of the nations.

  284. They have no knowledge

  285. who carry about their wooden idols

  286. and keep on praying to a God

  287. that cannot save.

  288. Declare and present your case.

  289. Let them take counsel together.

  290. Who told this long ago?

  291. Who declared it of old?

  292. Was it not I, the Lord?

  293. And there is no other God besides me,

  294. a righteous God and a Savior.

  295. There is none besides me.

  296. Turn to me and be saved,

  297. all the ends of the earth.

  298. For I am God and there is no other.

  299. By myself I have sworn,

  300. from my mouth has gone out

  301. in righteousness,

  302. a word that shall not return.

  303. To me, every knee shall bow,

  304. every tongue shall swear allegiance.

  305. Only in the Lord it shall be said of me,

  306. a righteousness and strength.

  307. To him shall come and be ashamed

  308. all who were incensed against him.

  309. And the Lord,

  310. all the offspring of Israel,

  311. shall be justified and shall glory.

  312. That's a lot.

  313. But notice as you read that,

  314. God calls out Cyrus long before Cyrus exists.

  315. And God's declaring what he's going to do.

  316. He's going to use Cyrus to bring about his covenants.

  317. In Isaiah 45,

  318. we see him prophesy the temple being rebuilt

  319. in verse 13,

  320. which implies a return to the land.

  321. In verse 22,

  322. we see God calling out for the salvation

  323. of people around the world.

  324. There's that universal blessing piece.

  325. And in verses 4, 17 and 25,

  326. we see God preserving his people

  327. who will be numbered as stars in heaven.

  328. Now, all of this in Isaiah 45

  329. is centered on the idea of salvation

  330. or deliverance,

  331. and that God is the deliverer,

  332. the savior.

  333. God will deliver his people.

  334. And we are going to see this in Daniel 6,

  335. which you can now return to.

  336. But he has set the stage.

  337. He's,

  338. God's already declared what's to come.

  339. In Daniel's lifetime,

  340. he could have heard Isaiah 45

  341. and known what's to come.

  342. But before we see deliverance in Daniel 6,

  343. we have to give our attention

  344. to something else in our main text.

  345. In all of God's redemptive history

  346. of working to save his people,

  347. there has always been opposition.

  348. And that opposition pops its head in Daniel 6,

  349. which leads us to the next point,

  350. point number two.

  351. God's people will be persecuted

  352. for their righteousness.

  353. God's people will be persecuted

  354. for their righteousness.

  355. In Matthew 5, verses 10 through 11,

    Matthew 5:10–11

  356. the Sermon on the Mount,

  357. Jesus said,

  358. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  359. for righteousness' sake,

  360. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  361. Blessed are you when others revile you

  362. and persecute you

  363. and utter all kinds of evil

  364. against you falsely on my account.

  365. So persecution is a promise

  366. to anyone who is truly following God.

  367. And although persecution can mean

  368. a variety of things,

  369. not just death,

  370. it is promised.

  371. But nonetheless,

  372. there is also a promise of blessing

  373. or makarios,

  374. the Greek word meaning

  375. blessed, happy, or flourishing.

  376. And that is not material flourishing,

  377. but spiritual flourishing,

  378. because the righteous have life in Christ.

  379. The kingdom of heaven is theirs.

  380. So looking back at Daniel,

  381. we see that the satraps and presidents

  382. all conspire to destroy Daniel.

  383. Looking at verse 4,

  384. it reads,

  385. Then the presidents and the satraps

  386. sought to find a ground of complaint

  387. against Daniel with regard to the kingdom.

  388. But they could find no ground for complaint

  389. or any fault

  390. because he was faithful.

  391. So what do they do now?

  392. They maliciously devise a scheme

  393. to trick the king

  394. into a position that will cost Daniel his life.

  395. They are so determined to bring Daniel down

  396. that these 122 men

  397. find a way to get together

  398. to conspire to plan against Daniel three times.

  399. Verses 6, 11, 15, each time.

  400. They came to agreement.

  401. They came to agreement.

  402. They came to agreement.

  403. They are relentless to kill Daniel

  404. and that is the measure of their resolve.

  405. They hate him

  406. for righteousness sake.

  407. You see, the satraps and presidents

  408. knew that the king would be swept away

  409. by such a flattering document.

  410. They enticed him to evil

  411. by appealing to the idol of self,

  412. to his pride.

  413. But more importantly,

  414. they knew Daniel would never worship the king.

  415. And as a result of their scheme

  416. and Daniel's faithfulness,

  417. he would die in the lion's den.

  418. That was their plan.

  419. Now I've got to tell you,

  420. none of this should surprise any of us,

  421. the least bit,

  422. especially if you've even just casually read the Bible

  423. without much study.

  424. It is full of this kind of language.

  425. It's clear that the world hates Yahweh.

  426. And his worshipers.

  427. It is as old as Cain killing Abel

  428. because of his righteousness.

  429. And that continues all throughout the Bible.

  430. Zachariah was stoned to death

  431. for righteousness sake.

  432. 2 Chronicles chapter 24.

    2 Chronicles 24 chapter mention

  433. John the Baptist was beheaded by Herod

  434. for righteousness sake.

  435. Matthew 14, 1 through 12.

  436. Stephen was stoned to death

  437. for righteousness sake.

  438. Acts 6 and 7.

  439. And James was cut down by the sword

  440. for righteousness sake.

  441. Acts chapter 12, verse 1.

    Acts 12:1

  442. Now Antiochus,

  443. this one's a little tricky,

  444. but church history testifies

  445. that he was burned in a boiling cup.

  446. And we know from Revelation 2, 12 through 13

  447. that he was martyred.

  448. And of course,

  449. all the apostles were executed

  450. in various forms

  451. and at various times.

  452. But the reason was always the same.

  453. Righteousness sake.

  454. And there are plenty more examples,

  455. by the way,

  456. not just in the Bible,

  457. but throughout church history.

  458. We have a whole book

  459. that covers only a fraction of the names

  460. called Fox's Book of the Martyrs.

  461. And again,

  462. they all died

  463. for righteousness sake.

  464. Jesus said in John 15,

    John 15:18–19

  465. verses 18 through 19,

  466. if the world hates you,

  467. know that it has hated me

  468. before it hated you.

  469. If you were of the world,

  470. the world would love you as its own.

  471. That's a promise.

  472. If you're of the world,

  473. the world will love you.

  474. But because you are not of the world,

  475. but I chose you out of the world,

  476. therefore,

  477. the world hates you.

  478. That's a promise too.

  479. But regardless of what the world may say or do,

  480. we are called to righteousness.

  481. Faith,

  482. obedience,

  483. worship,

  484. into and toward God alone.

  485. And we see that righteousness practice,

  486. the faithfulness of Daniel,

  487. as he prays three times to God in verse 10.

  488. Notice the beginning of verse 10,

  489. when Daniel knew that the document had been signed.

  490. So clearly,

  491. Daniel wanted everyone to know,

  492. unmistakably,

  493. that he worshiped God alone.

  494. This is why he faces Jerusalem.

  495. This is why he prays three times,

  496. which was the custom at the time for Jews,

  497. so that it is crystal clear.

  498. More significantly,

  499. he does this because this is who he is,

  500. a worshiper of God.

  501. The end of verse 10 tells us

  502. that his way of praying was done

  503. as he had done previously.

  504. This was a way of life for Daniel.

  505. He was simply going out

  506. and living his life as a God follower

  507. that he has always lived,

  508. going back to Daniel 1.

  509. So like me,

  510. some of you may be reading all this

  511. and seeing the persecution of the saints

  512. and wondering,

  513. where is all the justice in this?

  514. How is this right that so many innocents

  515. should suffer at the hands of wicked

  516. and lawless men,

  517. especially Daniel?

  518. Perhaps you find yourself

  519. thinking about the words of the martyrs

  520. recorded in Revelation 6, 9 through 10.

  521. John writes,

  522. When he opened the fifth seal,

  523. I saw under the altar

  524. the souls of those who had been slain

  525. for the word of God

  526. and for the witness they had borne.

  527. And they, those souls, the martyrs,

  528. they cried out with a loud voice,

  529. O sovereign Lord,

  530. holy and true,

  531. how long before you will avenge

  532. and judge our blood

  533. on those who dwell on the earth?

  534. It is not a question of if,

  535. it is the question of when.

  536. God will judge all of those

  537. who dwell on the earth.

  538. And this leads me to the next point,

  539. point number three.

  540. And this is the big one.

  541. Daniel 6 is a picture

  542. of God's deliverance

  543. for all true believers

  544. and judgment of all others.

  545. So I'll repeat that.

  546. Daniel 6 is a picture

  547. of God's deliverance

  548. for all true believers.

  549. and judgment of all others.

  550. We see the king

  551. is in genuine turmoil

  552. when his men find Daniel

  553. guilty of violating the injunction.

  554. Verse 14,

  555. the king is distressed

  556. and desired to deliver Daniel.

  557. He labored all night

  558. to rescue Daniel,

  559. but to no avail.

  560. And why?

  561. Because it was the law.

  562. And ironically,

  563. the king had no power

  564. to do anything about it.

  565. He was weak.

  566. He was manipulated.

  567. He could not save Daniel.

  568. The good thing about this king

  569. is that he was

  570. humble enough

  571. to recognize

  572. his own inability

  573. to save Daniel.

  574. Verse 16,

  575. the king prays to Daniel's God,

  576. our God,

  577. and asks him

  578. to deliver Daniel.

  579. And the king fasted

  580. all night

  581. while Daniel

  582. was in the lion's den

  583. in verse 18.

  584. And there's no response

  585. that speaks to a man's sense

  586. of inability

  587. and insufficiency

  588. as much as fasting.

  589. It is literally

  590. the crying out

  591. of God to help

  592. and deliver

  593. and do everything

  594. because I am helpless.

  595. That's what fasting

  596. is saying.

  597. Verses 14 through 18,

  598. we see the law

  599. is going to condemn

  600. Daniel to death

  601. and the king

  602. can do nothing about it.

  603. Now, if this is a picture

  604. of God's deliverance

  605. and judgment,

  606. there has to be

  607. a figure

  608. or a type

  609. of Christ.

  610. So looking at

  611. verse 17,

  612. we get a glimpse

  613. of this.

  614. A stone,

  615. verse 17 writes,

  616. a stone

  617. was brought

  618. and laid

  619. on the mouth

  620. of the den.

  621. So Daniel

  622. is sealed

  623. in this hole

  624. in the ground.

  625. The stone covers

  626. his only exit.

  627. He's alone

  628. with hungry lions

  629. surrounding him

  630. that could devour

  631. him in seconds.

  632. But verse 19,

  633. then at the break

  634. of day,

  635. the king arose

  636. and went in haste

  637. to the den of lions.

  638. As he came near

  639. to the den

  640. where Daniel was,

  641. he cried out

  642. in a tongue of anguish.

  643. The king declared

  644. to Daniel,

  645. O Daniel,

  646. servant of the living God,

  647. has your God,

  648. whom you serve

  649. continually,

  650. been able to deliver

  651. you from the lions?

  652. Then Daniel

  653. said to the king,

  654. O king,

  655. live forever.

  656. My God

  657. sent his angel

  658. and shut

  659. the lions' mouths,

  660. and they have

  661. not harmed me

  662. because I was

  663. found blameless

  664. before him.

  665. And also,

  666. before you,

  667. O king,

  668. I have done

  669. no harm.

  670. So second half

  671. of verse 23,

  672. so Daniel

  673. was taken up

  674. out of the den

  675. and no kind

  676. of harm

  677. was found

  678. on him

  679. because he

  680. had trusted

  681. in his God.

  682. And that

  683. should sound

  684. very familiar

  685. to us all.

  686. It should

  687. remind us

  688. of Jesus,

  689. of Christ.

  690. If you recall,

  691. Pilate,

  692. the governor,

  693. the Roman governor

  694. who was in charge

  695. during Christ's

  696. lifetime,

  697. Pilate

  698. desired to

  699. set Jesus

  700. free the way

  701. Cyrus desired

  702. to set Daniel

  703. free,

  704. yet both

  705. were powerless.

  706. You see that

  707. in Matthew 27,

    Matthew 27:15–23

  708. verses 15-23.

  709. Daniel

  710. prays in the

  711. upper room

  712. while waiting

  713. for his captors.

  714. Likewise,

  715. Jesus prayed

  716. in the garden

  717. waiting for

  718. his captors.

  719. Matthew 26,

  720. 36-46.

  721. Cyrus rolled

  722. a stone

  723. over to

  724. seal Daniel

  725. in what

  726. would become

  727. his tomb.

  728. And likewise,

  729. Joseph rolled

  730. the stone

  731. over Jesus'

  732. tomb

  733. and Pilate

  734. sealed it.

  735. Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:60–66

  736. verses 60-66.

  737. Daniel's

  738. deliverance

  739. from the

  740. lion's den

  741. becomes a

  742. legal issue.

  743. So in the

  744. Meadow

  745. Persians,

  746. I was about

  747. to say

  748. Babylonians,

  749. in their

  750. empire,

  751. if an

  752. execution

  753. didn't work

  754. overnight,

  755. they were

  756. set free.

  757. They viewed

  758. that as

  759. divine judgment

  760. of sparing

  761. the individual.

  762. So because

  763. Daniel survived

  764. the night,

  765. it was law

  766. that he had

  767. to be spared.

  768. That's why

  769. they don't

  770. keep him

  771. down there.

  772. So in

  773. other words,

  774. his deliverance

  775. from the

  776. lion's den

  777. overcame

  778. the law.

  779. Likewise,

  780. Christ's

  781. resurrection

  782. was a

  783. legal matter

  784. that overcame

  785. the power

  786. of the law.

  787. Colossians 2,

  788. 11-15.

  789. I could go

  790. on,

  791. but I think

  792. you get the

  793. point.

  794. Daniel is

  795. a type

  796. of Christ.

  797. Daniel is

  798. foreshadowing

  799. the work

  800. of Christ,

  801. namely,

  802. his death,

  803. resurrection,

  804. and ascension.

  805. Daniel ascends

  806. out of

  807. lion's den

  808. and then

  809. prospers

  810. as a ruler

  811. at the end

  812. of chapter

  813. 6,

  814. verse 28.

  815. Just as

  816. Christ ascended

  817. to be seated

  818. at the right

  819. hand of the

  820. Father.

  821. Mark 16,

    Mark 16:9

  822. verse 9.

  823. I mean,

  824. sweet Moses,

  825. the irony

  826. of the king's

  827. question,

  828. has your

  829. God been

  830. able to

  831. deliver you?

  832. And the

  833. answer is

  834. yes,

  835. a thousand

  836. times yes.

  837. He was

  838. able to

  839. deliver him

  840. and prosper

  841. him abundantly.

  842. And that

  843. picture of

  844. deliverance is

  845. all throughout

  846. Daniel 6,

  847. and it was

  848. prophesied in

  849. Isaiah 45,

  850. as we saw.

  851. But so

  852. is judgment

  853. prevalent in

  854. this chapter.

  855. The opposers,

  856. the satraps,

  857. and presidents

  858. were wicked

  859. in their

  860. schemes.

  861. They manipulated

  862. this entire

  863. ordeal,

  864. thinking it

  865. was by their

  866. hand that

  867. these things

  868. were to be.

  869. But look at

  870. verse 24.

  871. And the king

  872. commanded,

  873. and those men

  874. who had

  875. maliciously

  876. accused Daniel

  877. were brought

  878. and cast

  879. into the

  880. den of lions,

  881. they,

  882. their children,

  883. and their

  884. wives.

  885. And before

  886. they reached

  887. the bottom

  888. of the den,

  889. the lions

  890. overpowered

  891. them and

  892. broke all

  893. their bones

  894. in pieces.

  895. This image

  896. is shocking,

  897. terrifying,

  898. and even

  899. hard to digest

  900. at first

  901. when you

  902. picture the

  903. families included.

  904. On the one

  905. hand,

  906. you might be

  907. relieved to

  908. read this

  909. and think

  910. justice has

  911. been paid.

  912. They got

  913. what they

  914. deserve.

  915. There's a

  916. sense in

  917. which this

  918. is right.

  919. On the other

  920. hand,

  921. you might

  922. be

  923. heartbroken

  924. for them,

  925. knowing that

  926. you deserve

  927. the same

  928. because you

  929. too have

  930. lied and

  931. manipulated and

  932. all other

  933. kinds of

  934. sins have

  935. been committed

  936. by you,

  937. by me.

  938. And I

  939. want to

  940. suggest to

  941. you that

  942. on the one

  943. hand,

  944. you should

  945. feel 100%

  946. sorrow for

  947. these people,

  948. that you

  949. should be

  950. mourning their

  951. suffering since

  952. you know you

  953. deserve the

  954. same.

  955. But even

  956. so,

  957. you should

  958. also feel

  959. 100%

  960. thankful that

  961. God is

  962. just.

  963. We worship

  964. God for

  965. all that

  966. he is and

  967. all that

  968. he does,

  969. no exceptions.

  970. And it is

  971. as simple as

  972. this,

  973. if you do

  974. not want

  975. there to

  976. be justice,

  977. then you

  978. do not

  979. want God

  980. because God

  981. is just.

  982. And recall

  983. that we

  984. come to

  985. God only

  986. because his

  987. justice was

  988. carried out

  989. on our

  990. sins which

  991. Christ bore

  992. on our

  993. behalf.

  994. And remember

  995. the words of

  996. the martyrs in

  997. Revelation 6.10,

  998. they were

  999. martyred for

  1000. being a

  1001. witness to

  1002. the word.

  1003. In other

  1004. words,

  1005. these were

  1006. evangelists,

  1007. these were

  1008. missionaries,

  1009. these were

  1010. people who

  1011. sought to

  1012. see the

  1013. world saved.

  1014. And yet

  1015. these people

  1016. say,

  1017. O sovereign

  1018. Lord,

  1019. holy and

  1020. true,

  1021. how long

  1022. before you

  1023. will judge

  1024. and avenge

  1025. our blood

  1026. on those

  1027. who dwell

  1028. on the

  1029. earth?

  1030. God will

  1031. judge and

  1032. condemn every

  1033. person who

  1034. does not

  1035. repent and

  1036. place their

  1037. faith in

  1038. Jesus Christ

  1039. and then

  1040. obey him.

  1041. And that

  1042. judgment will

  1043. come quickly

  1044. and swiftly

  1045. like a

  1046. thief in

  1047. the night.

  1048. Do not

  1049. delay.

  1050. And this

  1051. leads me to

  1052. our final

  1053. point this

  1054. morning,

  1055. point number

  1056. four.

  1057. Our

  1058. response to

  1059. God's

  1060. deliverance

  1061. and judgment

  1062. is worship.

  1063. Our

  1064. response to

  1065. God's

  1066. deliverance

  1067. and judgment

  1068. is worship.

  1069. Looking at

  1070. verse 25,

  1071. in response to

  1072. seeing God

  1073. deliver Daniel

  1074. from the

  1075. lion's den,

  1076. this Darius

  1077. Cyrus guy

  1078. wrote to

  1079. all the

  1080. peoples,

  1081. nations,

  1082. and languages

  1083. that dwell on

  1084. the earth.

  1085. There's that

  1086. universal blessing

  1087. language again.

  1088. And he said,

  1089. peace be

  1090. multiplied to

  1091. you.

  1092. I make a

  1093. decree that

  1094. in all my

  1095. royal dominion

  1096. people are

  1097. to tremble

  1098. and fear

  1099. before the

  1100. God of

  1101. Daniel.

  1102. For he

  1103. is the

  1104. living God

  1105. enduring

  1106. forever.

  1107. His

  1108. kingdom

  1109. shall never

  1110. be destroyed

  1111. and his

  1112. dominion

  1113. shall be

  1114. to the

  1115. end.

  1116. He

  1117. delivers

  1118. and

  1119. rescues.

  1120. He

  1121. works

  1122. signs and

  1123. wonders

  1124. in heaven

  1125. and on

  1126. earth.

  1127. He

  1128. who

  1129. has

  1130. saved

  1131. Daniel

  1132. from the

  1133. power

  1134. of the

  1135. lions.

  1136. This

  1137. language

  1138. is all

  1139. worship,

  1140. praise,

  1141. and adoration.

  1142. And we

  1143. see this

  1144. kind of

  1145. worship

  1146. in the

  1147. final days

  1148. of God's

  1149. final

  1150. deliverance

  1151. and judgment

  1152. as well.

  1153. Revelation

  1154. 19.1

  1155. reads,

  1156. and the

  1157. context of

  1158. this is

  1159. right after

  1160. that final

  1161. judgment

  1162. and that

  1163. final

  1164. deliverance.

  1165. And

  1166. Revelation

  1167. 19.1

  1168. reads,

  1169. After

  1170. this,

  1171. I heard

  1172. what seemed

  1173. to be a

  1174. loud voice

  1175. of a

  1176. great

  1177. multitude

  1178. in

  1179. heaven

  1180. crying

  1181. out,

  1182. Hallelujah,

  1183. salvation

  1184. and glory

  1185. and power

  1186. belong to

  1187. our God.

  1188. For his

  1189. judgments

  1190. are true

  1191. and just.

  1192. For he

  1193. has judged

  1194. the great

  1195. prostitute

  1196. who corrupted

  1197. the earth

  1198. with her

  1199. immorality

  1200. and has

  1201. avenged

  1202. on her

  1203. the blood

  1204. of his

  1205. servants.

  1206. Once

  1207. more they

  1208. cried

  1209. out,

  1210. Hallelujah,

  1211. the smoke,

  1212. meaning the

  1213. tormenting

  1214. fires,

  1215. the smoke

  1216. from her

  1217. goes up

  1218. forever

  1219. and ever.

  1220. And this

  1221. is one

  1222. of the

  1223. reasons,

  1224. by the way,

  1225. that I

  1226. think Cyrus

  1227. was regenerate

  1228. because he

  1229. sounds an

  1230. awfully lot

  1231. like the

  1232. saints in

  1233. Revelation

  1234. 19 when

  1235. he praises

  1236. God in

  1237. Daniel 6.

  1238. When people

  1239. see God's

  1240. deliverance

  1241. and judgment,

  1242. they cannot

  1243. help but

  1244. worship him

  1245. and that is

  1246. the pattern

  1247. throughout

  1248. all of

  1249. scripture.

  1250. And that

  1251. is why

  1252. every knee

  1253. shall bow

  1254. and every

  1255. tongue

  1256. confess that

  1257. Jesus Christ

  1258. is Lord

  1259. because he

  1260. will make

  1261. it so

  1262. because he

  1263. is Lord.

  1264. And I

  1265. think it's

  1266. important to

  1267. note,

  1268. though,

  1269. the deliverance.

  1270. It's easy

  1271. to get

  1272. caught up

  1273. in judgment.

  1274. It's easy

  1275. to question

  1276. it.

  1277. It's easy

  1278. to wonder

  1279. about God's

  1280. love,

  1281. his character.

  1282. Sometimes we

  1283. don't always

  1284. see how the

  1285. scales balance

  1286. out,

  1287. but the

  1288. comfort in

  1289. Revelation

  1290. 19 is that

  1291. that is a

  1292. prophecy of

  1293. us praising

  1294. God and

  1295. saying that

  1296. he is

  1297. just.

  1298. That's a

  1299. prophecy of

  1300. us saying

  1301. the scales

  1302. are balanced

  1303. and now

  1304. we see

  1305. that you

  1306. are just,

  1307. you are

  1308. holy,

  1309. you are

  1310. love.

  1311. And we

  1312. see that

  1313. in Daniel

  1314. being risen

  1315. from the

  1316. lion stone,

  1317. being spared.

  1318. So I want

  1319. to close

  1320. with some

  1321. application.

  1322. The first

  1323. one being

  1324. fill yourself

  1325. with knowledge

  1326. of God's

  1327. covenants,

  1328. his promises.

  1329. If you

  1330. are faithful

  1331. to God,

  1332. then you

  1333. will face

  1334. persecution.

  1335. And if you

  1336. want to stand

  1337. strong as

  1338. Daniel did,

  1339. or better

  1340. yet,

  1341. as Christ

  1342. did perfectly,

  1343. then you

  1344. must have

  1345. something to

  1346. place your

  1347. hope in.

  1348. And that

  1349. is God

  1350. and his

  1351. promises.

  1352. The other

  1353. application is

  1354. rid yourself

  1355. of anxiety.

  1356. I mentioned

  1357. this one last

  1358. time, but I

  1359. thought it was

  1360. even more

  1361. fitting for

  1362. this text as

  1363. well, and I

  1364. couldn't help

  1365. but include

  1366. it.

  1367. Notice how

  1368. Daniel is

  1369. prospering in

  1370. the beginning

  1371. of chapter

  1372. 6.

  1373. He's on the

  1374. rise, he's

  1375. about to be

  1376. set over the

  1377. whole kingdom,

  1378. then all that

  1379. stuff happens

  1380. which makes it

  1381. look like he's

  1382. going downhill

  1383. quickly, looks

  1384. like he's

  1385. going to die.

  1386. But by the

  1387. end of it all,

  1388. he is saved,

  1389. and in verse

  1390. 28, we see

  1391. that he

  1392. prospered once

  1393. again.

  1394. As Christians,

  1395. we have the

  1396. unique benefit of

  1397. knowing where

  1398. everything began

  1399. and where it

  1400. all is going.

  1401. There's absolutely

  1402. no need to

  1403. fret over the

  1404. details of the

  1405. here and now.

  1406. These moments

  1407. are fleeting,

  1408. and we know

  1409. that heaven

  1410. awaits us

  1411. where God

  1412. will comfort

  1413. us as we

  1414. worship him

  1415. for all

  1416. eternity.

  1417. So anxiety

  1418. is needless,

  1419. and it is a

  1420. sin, and the

  1421. antidote to

  1422. that is to

  1423. place our

  1424. trust fully

  1425. in Christ.

  1426. Third application

  1427. is to prepare

  1428. yourself for

  1429. persecution from

  1430. a hostile

  1431. culture.

  1432. In other

  1433. words, count

  1434. the cost.

  1435. Jesus tells

  1436. us that if

  1437. we are to

  1438. follow him,

  1439. we must

  1440. first deny

  1441. ourselves,

  1442. take up

  1443. his cross,

  1444. and then

  1445. follow him

  1446. after 1624.

  1447. We have

  1448. to be willing

  1449. to die for

  1450. Christ, and

  1451. we should

  1452. expect persecution

  1453. because Christ

  1454. promises we,

  1455. the blessed,

  1456. will be

  1457. persecuted.

  1458. And if you've

  1459. never been

  1460. persecuted, perhaps

  1461. it's because you

  1462. are not practicing

  1463. righteousness.

  1464. And to be

  1465. clear, we are

  1466. not going into

  1467. the world and

  1468. trying to get

  1469. killed for being

  1470. annoying.

  1471. We are

  1472. trying to be

  1473. faithful, which

  1474. the world

  1475. hates.

  1476. So we want

  1477. to practice

  1478. righteousness.

  1479. And the

  1480. final application

  1481. is this, we

  1482. obey God, not

  1483. man.

  1484. I think it is

  1485. significant that

  1486. at no point in

  1487. Daniel 6 do we

  1488. see Daniel speak

  1489. lowly of the

  1490. king.

  1491. He never called

  1492. him weak or a

  1493. puppet, though

  1494. there were clearly

  1495. grounds to do

  1496. so.

  1497. Rather, Daniel

  1498. expressed respect

  1499. for this God-given

  1500. position.

  1501. He said in

  1502. verse 21,

  1503. O king, live

  1504. forever.

  1505. And we too

  1506. should respect

  1507. our authorities,

  1508. whether they be

  1509. government officials,

  1510. parents, employers,

  1511. coaches, or what

  1512. have you.

  1513. However, at the

  1514. end of the day,

  1515. when you get a

  1516. command from man

  1517. that conflicts

  1518. with a command

  1519. from the Lord

  1520. of the universe,

  1521. the one you

  1522. should obey is

  1523. obvious.

  1524. The chain of

  1525. command is clear.

  1526. Yes, render to

  1527. Caesar that which

  1528. is Caesar's, but

  1529. never squander or

  1530. forget to render

  1531. to God that

  1532. which is God's.

  1533. We are citizens

  1534. of the kingdom

  1535. of heaven before

  1536. anything else.

  1537. We're not

  1538. Americans, Mexicans,

  1539. Germans, or what

  1540. have you.

  1541. We are followers

  1542. of Christ.

  1543. Let's follow him

  1544. now through prayer.

  1545. Let's go.
