  1. Let me give you a bit of a warning. I'm a little tired this morning, so I thought I would get a cup of tea.

  2. You know, tea's supposed to kind of help wake you up, kind of like coffee.

  3. Sounds right. Do I look like a tea drinker, though, first of all. I'm not really educated on tea much, but I picked up something because it said, you know, I've been drinking it.

  4. It's been tasting good. But guess what? It's the kind of tea that makes you tired instead of, wait, cozy chamomile.

  5. Deceived by the cozy part, I thought, man, I want to feel cozy. So I drank that.

  6. So if I take a dive in the middle of this, like, that's what's going on. So just coffee from now on for me.

  7. Anyway, Luke 15. We've been working our way through some of the parables of Jesus.

  8. We took a break from going through the book of Daniel. And today we're going to embark and look at two different parables.

  9. From Luke 15. There are three altogether. But as you're aware, the third one is lengthy and deserves a lot more attention than just one Sunday morning.

  10. But just a background. Luke's gospel, the primary audience was non-Jews.

  11. It was for mainly focused toward Gentiles. Luke was a physician. Luke was a historian.

  12. And he wrote this gospel as a historical account of the life of Jesus.

  13. And later on wrote Acts. But in his mind is a Gentile audience.

  14. Those who, by a lot of people, were seen as outsiders of the covenant.

  15. And to kind of show God's love and God's grace towards all people.

  16. And so throughout the book of Luke, there's been a few times, even before where we are now,

  17. where it says that Jesus set his face toward Jerusalem.

  18. So he's kind of making his last journey toward the city of Jerusalem where he will die on the cross.

  19. And so heavy stuff on his mind, obviously.

  20. So we will just begin reading in chapter 15, verse 1.

  21. It says,

  22. Now the tax collectors and sinners were drawing near to him.

  23. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying,

  24. This man receives sinners and eats with them.

  25. So he told them a parable.

  26. What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them,

  27. does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

  28. And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

  29. And when he comes home, he calls together all his friends and his neighbors,

  30. saying to them,

  31. Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.

  32. Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents

  33. than the ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.

  34. Or what woman, having ten silver coins,

  35. if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp,

  36. and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?

  37. And when she has found it, she calls together her friends, her neighbors,

  38. saying, Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.

  39. Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

  40. Let's join me in a word of prayer.

  41. Lord, we lift up this time together.

  42. I pray that we would worship through our listening, through our hearing,

  43. and then later by our obeying, by your grace.

  44. What we hear from your word today,

  45. just work in and through me to communicate the meaning and the application

  46. in a way that would be pleasing to you.

  47. Yeah, in Jesus' name, amen.

  48. Amen.

  49. So, just a little bit of the background, the introduction.

  50. This is not an unfamiliar passage for a lot of you.

  51. But first, just kind of notice that Jesus is hanging around some unruly company.

  52. In ancient Palestine, tax collectors were representatives of the Roman authorities.

  53. They were seen as outcasts.

  54. They were seen as traitors to the nation.

  55. They often used their authority to extort and take more money than they should from their own people,

  56. not just to pay their own, but also to kind of layer their own pockets.

  57. It was so bad that even most Jews didn't hang out with tax collectors,

  58. not just the religious elite, but they were just seen as scumbags of society,

  59. just traitors.

  60. That's how they were viewed.

  61. And Jesus has already kind of taken an aim at that

  62. because he has called a tax collector to be among his disciples already.

  63. So, he's kind of developing that stigma.

  64. Then it says that he was around sinners

  65. and all associated along with tax collectors.

  66. At least in the way it's being used here,

  67. it's just kind of implying to anyone who didn't follow or abide by the Mosaic law,

  68. people that didn't really take that kind of life very seriously.

  69. And so they were associated as outsiders in a lot of ways.

  70. The Pharisees would have regarded the sinners as anyone who doesn't care about the law as they interpret it.

  71. And it seemed to reflect a commonly understood meaning

  72. that people were guilty of public sin,

  73. but also just disinterested, disengaged from religious life as the Pharisees would have it.

  74. And so it was culturally unacceptable for Jesus to keep with such company.

  75. He receives and welcomes sinners.

  76. If you read just in the last verse of chapter 14,

  77. Jesus says,

  78. Those who have ears to hear, let them hear.

  79. So, he knows people are listening in,

  80. particularly the religious elite.

  81. And so he welcomes sinners who have ears to hear.

  82. His concern is for the outsider, the outcast of society.

  83. So that's the unruly company,

  84. but also you notice there's the religious leaders who are there,

  85. the scribes and the Pharisees in verse 2.

  86. And they're looking on at this with great disgust.

  87. Pharisees means separated ones.

  88. So if you want to think about it that way,

  89. they really saw themselves as extra holy.

  90. They were the most influential of three major Jewish sects

  91. and a highly influential group.

  92. And they were known for their meticulous observance of the law,

  93. but they also had added on a lot of extra laws,

  94. extra biblical laws,

  95. laws in order to attain righteousness before God and God's favor.

  96. They also believed that if they were righteous enough,

  97. they could possibly obtain resurrection from the dead.

  98. And so, a very religious, strict group looking on.

  99. And the scribes are obviously those who copied the scripture,

  100. copied the law,

  101. and passed it on.

  102. So both honorable professions in the eyes of culture.

  103. It says they watched this spectacle of Jesus being with tax collectors and sinners.

  104. It says they grumbled.

  105. They murmured.

  106. They indignantly complained among themselves.

  107. They don't like what they see.

  108. Jesus is not abiding by their rules,

  109. not behaving in their mind as a rabbi ought to behave.

  110. So what are they muttering about?

  111. Highly agitated because he receives sinners and eats with them.

  112. So not just that he came in contact with them,

  113. but he actually was eating with them.

  114. So it's not just like they're just grabbing a meal together real quick.

  115. It's like sharing a meal at that time

  116. meant sort of a way of expressing covenant friendship with someone.

  117. And he's there with them.

  118. He's associating with them.

  119. Extended friendship.

  120. And they saw these people as ritually unclean.

  121. And their thinking was,

  122. we are high up here.

  123. They are way down here.

  124. We can't mix with them or else they will pollute us.

  125. They will corrupt us.

  126. In this society,

  127. such people were known as people of the land.

  128. That's what they were referred to.

  129. So the people of dirt,

  130. kind of at the bottom of society.

  131. Peasants,

  132. unknown to God

  133. and unknown to his ways.

  134. So there was even a rabbinical teaching.

  135. So again,

  136. this is extra biblical,

  137. not written in the law of Moses.

  138. But to the Pharisees,

  139. this is what it said.

  140. Let not a man associate with the wicked,

  141. not even to bring him closer to the law.

  142. And how bad is that?

  143. So Jesus is doing the opposite.

  144. He could cleanse the leper rather than being made unclean by the leper.

  145. And so when he's around sinners,

  146. they don't affect him.

  147. He affects them.

  148. So he is not defiled by them.

  149. So Jesus knows that this is what they're thinking.

  150. He hears them muttering among themselves.

  151. And just like our Lord took a time to tell a parable,

  152. parable,

  153. simple story to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson.

  154. And the intended receivers are the religious leaders.

  155. Other people are listening,

  156. of course,

  157. but he's making a point to them particularly.

  158. And he tells a parable.

  159. Let me just think about his genius as a teacher.

  160. Men love sheep.

  161. Women,

  162. coins.

  163. Fathers love sons.

  164. That's like what he's thinking.

  165. And so a real simple outline.

  166. And then we'll get into some more application.

  167. But number one,

  168. something lost.

  169. Number two will be something is found.

  170. And number three,

  171. the rejoicing that results.

  172. So something lost.

  173. So the first parable,

  174. he tells about a sheep that is lost from a flock,

  175. one out of 99.

  176. And,

  177. you know,

  178. pastors are quick to start making jokes about sheep at this point,

  179. to get people to laugh.

  180. But then you realize,

  181. that's me.

  182. So maybe we shouldn't joke about that so much.

  183. But yeah,

  184. sheep are not intelligent.

  185. They are prey animals.

  186. They are defenseless.

  187. They are dependent on the shepherd to lead them,

  188. feed them,

  189. protect them.

  190. I don't know.

  191. Most of you probably really haven't been around sheep,

  192. but I have quite a bit with all my trips to Ireland and Scotland.

  193. And like,

  194. they don't camouflage well.

  195. They don't hide well.

  196. They are ridiculous.

  197. I've had friends that own some,

  198. you know,

  199. flocks,

  200. and I've gone out to help them find some ones that were just not in the main group.

  201. And I found one of them like,

  202. just on his back,

  203. like a turtle.

  204. I couldn't,

  205. and just,

  206. you know,

  207. filthy.

  208. Found another one with his head stuck through a fence and his horns were just not,

  209. so you had to pull him and then twist him and then shove his head through.

  210. Just,

  211. just ridiculous animals.

  212. But,

  213. they are prey animals.

  214. They don't hide well,

  215. but they were still a good source of not just food,

  216. but commerce,

  217. trade,

  218. financial gain for,

  219. people who owned a good herd.

  220. And shepherds,

  221. so they didn't call this man a shepherd,

  222. but it's implied.

  223. So,

  224. if he was hired by a master,

  225. every sheep had to be accounted for.

  226. And if he lost one,

  227. it would come out of his pay,

  228. more than likely.

  229. But if it was his own sheep,

  230. you might be thinking like,

  231. you know,

  232. how lazy and spoiled we are today.

  233. You might just think,

  234. I've got 99,

  235. like,

  236. who cares about the one?

  237. Well,

  238. if you think that way for too long,

  239. you're not going to have a flock for too long,

  240. because that happens.

  241. All the time.

  242. You're going to have a small flock

  243. very,

  244. very soon.

  245. So,

  246. you have to go after them,

  247. because

  248. you hold the attitude for too long,

  249. they'll be killed,

  250. they'll be eaten,

  251. they'll freeze to death,

  252. they'll starve,

  253. on and on.

  254. So,

  255. he

  256. leaves,

  257. right?

  258. He cares for that one lost sheep.

  259. He leaves in 99,

  260. in the open country,

  261. and goes after the one that's lost.

  262. And,

  263. it's depicting kind of like a long and rigorous search over a wide area,

  264. combing the surrounding fields and hillsides to find the lost sheep.

  265. So,

  266. that's this broad search,

  267. kind of exhausting too.

  268. So,

  269. then,

  270. you get to the parable of the woman who lost the coins.

  271. And,

  272. it's this idea of losing almost a 10 days wage for a laborer,

  273. something that is,

  274. might be referred to as her dowry coin,

  275. something that she might take with her when she gets married,

  276. into her new marriage.

  277. And,

  278. it's just very shameful and careless to lose them.

  279. So,

  280. the image here,

  281. not of like a woman who's fixated about money,

  282. it's just more of like,

  283. this is something precious and important to her that she wishes to hold on to,

  284. to take into,

  285. possibly,

  286. again,

  287. sort of like a marriage setting.

  288. And,

  289. it would just be shameful to lose something like that.

  290. And so,

  291. the search isn't so much far and wide,

  292. but as we,

  293. as we read,

  294. right,

  295. she,

  296. diligently,

  297. looks for it.

  298. And so,

  299. her search is more thorough and diligent.

  300. She turns on a light to look,

  301. or turns on a lamp,

  302. excuse me.

  303. You don't turn on a lamp,

  304. do you?

  305. You light a lamp.

  306. But,

  307. it's a diligent and thorough search.

  308. And,

  309. I know,

  310. again,

  311. this would be a point where you just make a lot of jokes about things you've lost,

  312. but don't have time to do that.

  313. But,

  314. I've lost keys,

  315. lost wallet,

  316. kind of do it,

  317. do it frequently.

  318. Sometimes,

  319. like,

  320. I think my wallet just grows legs and walks away,

  321. and I don't know where it is at all.

  322. I have a map that says,

  323. keys,

  324. phone,

  325. wallet,

  326. right,

  327. walking out of my door to help me remember.

  328. So,

  329. yeah,

  330. we lose a lot of things,

  331. but it can make you feel embarrassed,

  332. shameful,

  333. and even panic with fear a little bit,

  334. if it's something very serious that you need.

  335. So,

  336. something is lost.

  337. Secondly,

  338. something is found.

  339. So,

  340. the man's searching paid off,

  341. as we read,

  342. and when he has found it,

  343. he lays,

  344. right,

  345. the sheep on his shoulders,

  346. in verse 5,

  347. rejoicing.

  348. A picture of a loving,

  349. caring shepherd.

  350. The sheep is too weak to return on its own,

  351. so he throws it over his shoulders.

  352. He's probably injured,

  353. dehydrated,

  354. scared,

  355. and he takes it back to save pasture,

  356. to be with the rest of the flock,

  357. and he's rejoicing.

  358. He isn't like,

  359. you know,

  360. cussing,

  361. as he's like taking the sheep back,

  362. but he's like happy that he found this lost sheep.

  363. And so,

  364. for the woman,

  365. it's the same thing.

  366. When she finds the coin,

  367. she is very happy.

  368. She is overflowing with joy.

  369. Her money is intact,

  370. and she's not going to be embarrassed,

  371. or ashamed anymore.

  372. And so,

  373. that leads to the third point,

  374. just the rejoicing that results.

  375. When the man brings the sheep back,

  376. he shares the joy with his friends and his neighbors.

  377. And you see that in verse 6.

  378. When he comes home,

  379. he calls together his friends and his neighbors,

  380. saying to them,

  381. rejoice with me,

  382. for I have found the sheep that was lost.

  383. And so,

  384. this is a picture of true joy.

  385. Christ-centered joy is meant,

  386. designed to spill over onto other people.

  387. It's not meant to be hoarded.

  388. I mean,

  389. think about some of the most joyful things

  390. that have happened in your life.

  391. Most of you,

  392. unless you're very odd,

  393. like you like to let people know

  394. about the joy that you are undergoing,

  395. especially the ones that are closest to you.

  396. So,

  397. that joy shared is a way to fulfilling it,

  398. right?

  399. You have to.

  400. And with the coins,

  401. it says,

  402. when she had found it,

  403. she called together her friends,

  404. her neighbors,

  405. saying,

  406. rejoice with me,

  407. for I have found the coin that I had lost.

  408. Her joy,

  409. likewise,

  410. has to be,

  411. has to,

  412. you know,

  413. overflow to other people

  414. to be made full.

  415. Those are the closest to them.

  416. So,

  417. that's a simple outline.

  418. Some of it was lost,

  419. some of it was found.

  420. And then there's rejoicing that takes place.

  421. So,

  422. the application of this,

  423. here's a few things for us.

  424. But one is,

  425. Jesus is trying to get his audience to understand

  426. that God cares for sinners,

  427. unlike the religious leaders that were around him.

  428. He says that God Almighty cares deeply about the lost sinners.

  429. Jesus is telling,

  430. you know,

  431. about the attitude of our Heavenly Father

  432. towards those who repent.

  433. So,

  434. as you're aware,

  435. repent means to turn away from sin,

  436. turn to God.

  437. It means,

  438. really,

  439. a changing of one's mind

  440. toward sin.

  441. So,

  442. not that just you hate doing something,

  443. but now,

  444. I mean,

  445. excuse me,

  446. like you don't hate just the consequences

  447. of your actions,

  448. but you hate what you do.

  449. Like you hated the sin that you committed.

  450. And,

  451. that change of mind

  452. leads to a change in action.

  453. And so,

  454. as we turn to God in faith,

  455. to save us.

  456. So,

  457. these are images of God's joy

  458. and the restoration of a sinner

  459. through repentance.

  460. And this is just very different in their mind,

  461. like God does not act this way.

  462. But,

  463. Psalm 103,

  464. as a father,

  465. shows compassion,

  466. compassion,

  467. to his children.

  468. So,

  469. the Lord shows compassion

  470. to those who fear him.

  471. For he knows our frame.

  472. He remembers that we are by dust.

  473. He takes pity on us.

  474. He knows that we are weak.

  475. So,

  476. he has compassion for us.

  477. In Matthew 9,

  478. very similar situation.

  479. But,

  480. Matthew 9,

    Matthew 9:11

  481. verse 11,

  482. the Pharisees saw what Jesus was doing.

  483. And they say,

  484. why does your teacher

  485. eat with tax collectors

  486. and sinners?

  487. When he heard it,

  488. he said,

  489. those who are well

  490. have no need

  491. of a physician.

  492. But those who are sick,

  493. go and learn

  494. what this means.

  495. I desire mercy

  496. and not sacrifice.

  497. For I came not to call

  498. righteous,

  499. the righteous,

  500. but sinners.

  501. And so,

  502. he quotes from

  503. Hosea 6.

  504. He's like,

  505. yeah,

  506. well,

  507. go read your scripture,

  508. basically.

  509. Go read your Bible

  510. and read this,

  511. where God says,

  512. I desire mercy

  513. and not sacrifice.

  514. That was the heart

  515. of the gospel,

  516. but that threatened

  517. their way of thinking

  518. and sacrifice,

  519. kind of,

  520. all the different things

  521. that you do

  522. to observe the law,

  523. the religious law.

  524. And God's steadfast love

  525. is what God cares about.

  526. He wants to show that

  527. to sinners.

  528. And he's saying

  529. that, like,

  530. your attitude

  531. is different than God's.

  532. God desires

  533. and seeks sinners.

  534. That kind of leads

  535. to this other thing,

  536. right?

  537. If you notice

  538. in the story,

  539. what Jesus is trying

  540. to tell them is

  541. God is the one

  542. who initiates.

  543. He is the one

  544. who seeks.

  545. He is the one

  546. who finds.

  547. It's not,

  548. it's not,

  549. it's not that God

  550. is just kind of

  551. hanging out

  552. and we have to work

  553. our way toward Him

  554. to reach a level

  555. of favor with Him.

  556. He actually comes out

  557. and gets us.

  558. That's awesome news.

  559. God hunts us down.

  560. And you won't find

  561. anybody in the Bible

  562. that was just kind of,

  563. you know,

  564. not found by God.

  565. God found them.

  566. And He pursued them.

  567. It's not within

  568. the nature of fallen man

  569. to desire God.

  570. We don't seek after God.

  571. That's Romans 3,

  572. right?

  573. There are none righteous,

  574. no, not one.

  575. No one understands

  576. and no one seeks

  577. for God.

  578. We all have turned aside

  579. and together

  580. have become worthless,

  581. right?

  582. And that idea

  583. of Isaiah

  584. connecting to

  585. the sheep.

  586. We all,

  587. like sheep,

  588. have gone astray,

  589. each to

  590. his own way.

  591. So,

  592. God is the one

  593. who takes the initiative

  594. and He pursues

  595. the lost center.

  596. He is viewed

  597. in Scripture

  598. as a shepherd,

  599. right?

  600. So,

  601. Ezekiel 34,

    Ezekiel 34:15

  602. verse 15,

  603. this is God talking,

  604. I myself

  605. will be the shepherd

  606. of my sheep

  607. and I myself

  608. will make them

  609. lie down,

  610. declares the Lord God.

  611. I will seek

  612. the lost

  613. and I will bring

  614. back the stray

  615. and I will bind

  616. up the injured

  617. and I will strengthen

  618. the weak.

  619. That's God's

  620. attitude

  621. towards

  622. lost

  623. sinners.

  624. And one of my

  625. favorite passages

  626. in the New Testament,

  627. Romans 5,

  628. is to explain

  629. the gospel.

  630. It said,

  631. God,

  632. while we were

  633. still helpless,

  634. while we were

  635. weak,

  636. nothing we could

  637. do on our own.

  638. It says,

  639. God demonstrated

  640. His great love

  641. towards us

  642. by sending

  643. Christ.

  644. So,

  645. that's our condition,

  646. but God

  647. sought us

  648. and so that's

  649. the image of Him

  650. in these parables.

  651. But also,

  652. the joy of heaven

  653. is contrasted

  654. with like the grumbling

  655. of the Pharisees.

  656. He's telling them

  657. like there is

  658. serious,

  659. holy,

  660. pure joy

  661. that erupts

  662. in heaven

  663. when a sinner

  664. comes to

  665. saving faith.

  666. And He says

  667. that.

  668. I'm telling you,

  669. there will be

  670. more joy in heaven

  671. over one sinner

  672. who repents

  673. than other

  674. 99

  675. righteous persons

  676. who need

  677. no repentance.

  678. About that last part,

  679. that doesn't mean

  680. there actually are

  681. people who don't

  682. need to repent.

  683. It just means

  684. that they're not

  685. aware of their

  686. need to repent.

  687. It doesn't mean

  688. that they're sinless,

  689. but rather,

  690. they've wrongly

  691. deceived themselves

  692. into thinking

  693. that they are

  694. righteous,

  695. thus not feeling

  696. the need

  697. for repentance.

  698. While you're in Luke,

  699. go to Luke 5

  700. really quickly.

  701. Let's rewind.

  702. Luke 5,

    Luke 5:30

  703. verse 30.

  704. So,

  705. this isn't the first

  706. time this has

  707. kind of happened.

  708. Luke 5,

    Luke 5:30

  709. verse 30.

  710. It says,

  711. the Pharisees

  712. and their scribes

  713. grumbled at

  714. his disciples

  715. saying,

  716. why do you eat

  717. and drink

  718. with tax collectors

  719. and sinners?

  720. And Jesus

  721. answered them,

  722. those who are well

  723. have no need

  724. of a physician,

  725. but those who are sick.

  726. I have not come

  727. to call the righteous,

  728. but sinners

  729. to repentance.

  730. And so,

  731. listen to this.

  732. you cannot hear

  733. Jesus

  734. unless you know

  735. that you need him.

  736. If God is stirring

  737. in your heart

  738. and your soul

  739. and making you aware

  740. of your sin

  741. and the weight of it

  742. and the guilt of it,

  743. and he is making you aware

  744. that you are sick

  745. and that you need him,

  746. the great physician.

  747. So,

  748. if you're aware

  749. you're sick,

  750. aware of your sin,

  751. you're aware

  752. of your need

  753. for deliverance,

  754. right?

  755. So,

  756. he's saying

  757. there is great joy

  758. in heaven

  759. that takes place.

  760. Great celebration.

  761. And so,

  762. some closing thoughts

  763. on this.

  764. We all need

  765. a very clear warning.

  766. Beware of being

  767. like the Pharisees

  768. and the scribes

  769. who do not rejoice

  770. over finding

  771. what is lost,

  772. who consider themselves

  773. holier,

  774. better,

  775. cleaner,

  776. set apart,

  777. and so that we are

  778. quick to look upon others

  779. and say,

  780. not that guy,

  781. not that girl.

  782. And you can,

  783. the attitude of like,

  784. hey,

  785. if you can clean up,

  786. you can get yourself together,

  787. you can come to our thing.

  788. But,

  789. you don't look like us,

  790. so beat it.

  791. And,

  792. that is not the approach

  793. that Jesus exercised.

  794. And there are many

  795. in the church

  796. who are like that.

  797. One of my mom's

  798. best friends

  799. was very much like that.

  800. And a part of her testimony now

  801. is she actually,

  802. she shares,

  803. like,

  804. I was the older brother.

  805. I was the one who thought

  806. I was better

  807. than everybody else.

  808. And,

  809. until God made me realize

  810. that my righteousness

  811. was filthy before him.

  812. And so,

  813. beware of thinking

  814. in that way

  815. and that people

  816. are going to be excluded

  817. from God's kingdom

  818. just because they don't

  819. act and look like you.

  820. Here's one that is sad,

  821. but you got to say it today.

  822. Beware of wrongly

  823. motivated evangelism.

  824. Some of you are thinking like,

  825. hmm,

  826. tax collectors and sinners,

  827. that's kind of the crowd

  828. I like to hang out with.

  829. So,

  830. I'll just kind of covertly

  831. go in under the name of

  832. I'm going to like do ministry

  833. in there.

  834. But,

  835. deep down,

  836. you actually are

  837. just worshiping the idols

  838. of social acceptance,

  839. of partying,

  840. and you just want to blend in.

  841. And,

  842. it's really not about Jesus.

  843. It's about you.

  844. And,

  845. it's about you

  846. worshiping your idols.

  847. So,

  848. beware of like,

  849. hiding under that guise.

  850. Like,

  851. yeah,

  852. that's my crowd.

  853. I'd rather spend time with anyway.

  854. I'll just say

  855. I'm just doing some evangelism

  856. while I'm there.

  857. But,

  858. deep down,

  859. I'm really just pursuing

  860. sin.

  861. So,

  862. don't see that as an excuse

  863. to go and be in those places

  864. necessarily.

  865. Beware of that.

  866. Ask yourself,

  867. why are you there?

  868. To influence others for Christ

  869. and to look like you're

  870. doing something there

  871. or just secretly

  872. worshiping your idols?

  873. Who is influencing who?

  874. Why are you there?

  875. And,

  876. two more thoughts,

  877. we're done.

  878. God is seeking you.

  879. No matter where you are,

  880. if you're aware of your sin,

  881. aware of who you are,

  882. and aware of what you deserve,

  883. know that God stands ready

  884. with open arms

  885. to receive you.

  886. Does that like,

  887. do your heart good

  888. to know that God is welcoming,

  889. that His arms are open,

  890. that He's not,

  891. you know,

  892. snarling down at you

  893. and despising you?

  894. But He is ready

  895. to display His lavish love

  896. upon repentant sinners.

  897. 1 Timothy 1,

    1 Timothy 1:15

  898. verse 15,

  899. Paul says this,

  900. has a hope of enticing

  901. or showing people

  902. the great mercy of God.

  903. He says,

  904. this is a trustworthy saying,

  905. deserving of full acceptance.

  906. Christ Jesus came into the world

  907. to save sinners,

  908. of whom I am the foremost.

  909. But I receive mercy

  910. for this reason,

  911. that in me,

  912. as the foremost,

  913. Jesus Christ might display

  914. His perfect patience

  915. as example to those

  916. who are to believe in Him

  917. for eternal life,

  918. to the King of ages,

  919. immortal,

  920. invisible,

  921. the only God,

  922. the honor and glory

  923. forever and ever.

  924. So,

  925. God is seeking you.

  926. And for many of us,

  927. we have been found.

  928. We don't need to forget

  929. where we were

  930. before we were found.

  931. And,

  932. if you wish to partake

  933. in the joy in heaven,

  934. like what believer

  935. doesn't want to do that?

  936. Do you wish to partake

  937. of the joy of heaven?

  938. Then you must seek

  939. lost sinners.

  940. There's no other way around it.

  941. This is a big deal

  942. in heaven.

  943. So,

  944. if God has sought us,

  945. we must be willing

  946. and desirous to seek others

  947. that are outside

  948. the fold of God

  949. and to bring them in.

  950. And,

  951. again,

  952. they don't always look like us,

  953. talk like us,

  954. have their stuff together,

  955. and that's all right.

  956. One of the guys

  957. in my earlier Christian life

  958. that the Lord

  959. humbly used me

  960. and a couple others

  961. to bring him to faith,

  962. his name was Joe.

  963. And Joe was like

  964. a heavy metal dude.

  965. He was like,

  966. he had like long hair,

  967. big stout guy,

  968. and he played the drums

  969. and where the hair,

  970. you know,

  971. going,

  972. like that's,

  973. that was him.

  974. And he was like into,

  975. you know,

  976. Pearl Jam,

  977. Smashing Pumpkins,

  978. like those old

  979. 90s rock groups.

  980. And he was

  981. mind blown

  982. that Christ

  983. would care for him.

  984. Mind blown.

  985. And he was,

  986. he looked very different,

  987. obviously,

  988. than a lot of people

  989. that we were hanging out with

  990. in that church setting.

  991. But I just love

  992. to see the old ladies

  993. at our church

  994. would just come up

  995. and just give this guy a hug

  996. and just say,

  997. we love you.

  998. We're glad

  999. that you're here.

  1000. But Joe

  1001. cannot believe

1002. that God cared for him.

  1003. It was just like,

1004. he just kind of got stuck

  1005. on that one point.

  1006. God cares for me

  1007. and the Lord

  1008. saved him.

  1009. And so,

1010. go and seek the lost.

  1011. It's the most

  1012. beautiful mysteries

  1013. of scripture

  1014. that a holy God

  1015. would have the desire

  1016. to draw near

  1017. to individuals

  1018. like you

  1019. and me

  1020. and to not

  1021. despise them.

  1022. So,

  1023. let's pray together.
