  1. All right, good morning, CFC.

  2. We'll be in the book of James, chapter 5, starting in verse 13.

    James 5 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. So James writes,

  5. Let no one say when he is tempted, I am being tempted by God.

  6. For God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

  7. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

  8. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin.

  9. And sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.

  10. In seventh grade, I remember getting caught cheating on a homework assignment for a science class.

  11. I don't even remember what science we were studying.

  12. It shows you how much I cared about that class.

  13. But we had an assignment where we had to go home and read this chapter

  14. and look for sentences on the page that were on our sheet, you know, and fill in the blank.

  15. Just to prove we had read it.

  16. And I kind of thought, it's kind of a waste of time, you know.

  17. And so I didn't feel like doing it.

  18. And so I thought, you know, in all my seventh grade wisdom, I thought,

  19. Well, I'll just copy my friend Alexander tomorrow.

  20. He's a smart kid.

  21. You know, he's in the orchestra.

  22. Like, he's going places.

  23. I'll just copy him.

  24. He'll have it, because he's a book winner.

  25. And so that's exactly what I did.

  26. And the parapro caught me, and she didn't really like me.

  27. And I was kind of a brat.

  28. This is before I was a believer, by the way.

  29. But Mr. Brown, the actual teacher, he did like me.

  30. I'm not sure why, but he did.

  31. And I knew I could talk my way out of it with him.

  32. So when she caught me, she brought me up, you know, showed my homework assignment, all this kind of stuff.

  33. And I just said, Well, you know, Mr. Brown, you assigned this thing, okay?

  34. You told me to copy from the book.

  35. I see no difference copying from my friend.

  36. What's the issue here?

  37. I had to read the sentences.

  38. They're right here.

  39. And he laughed, looked at the parapro, and said, Well, you know, he's got a point.

  40. And it counted.

  41. So that's how I'm here today.

  42. Past seventh grade.

  43. But, yeah, I essentially turned it on him, though.

  44. I'm giving you the short version.

  45. But when I really was kind of arguing with him, which is more playful, I basically turned it on him.

  46. I said, You know, this is really your fault for giving me such a dumb assignment.

  47. I didn't use that word at the time.

  48. But, you know, I just thought, This is so ridiculous.

  49. This is really your fault.

  50. If you really wanted me to learn something here, do something right, or do something profitable,

  51. you should have assigned a different type of homework.

  52. And so I essentially blamed him for what I had done.

  53. Right?

  54. And I turned it on him.

  55. And obviously, you all know the reality.

  56. What I did that day was wrong.

  57. My actions, my desires, my decisions were deceitful.

  58. They were sinful in that moment.

  59. But it's really telling, though.

  60. I mean, this has been, to put it in the more abstract statement, right,

  61. this has been the pattern of man forever.

  62. We always shift blame throughout all of history.

  63. The rebel left to himself never admits responsibility for rebelling.

  64. And this is as old as the Garden of Eden.

  65. When Adam is approached for his sin, he does not admit his wrongdoing to God.

  66. Rather, he shifts the blame.

  67. But not to Eve.

  68. Specifically, he says in Genesis 3, chapter 3, verse 12,

  69. he says,

  70. The woman whom you gave me, God,

  71. the woman whom you gave to be with me,

  72. is the reason I sinned.

  73. So he's saying, God, this broken vessel that you created did this evil.

  74. With the subtle implication being,

  75. God, you are responsible for what I did.

  76. If you didn't want me to do this,

  77. you shouldn't have given me this woman who made me do these things.

  78. And everything that led to me committing this sin is external to me.

  79. It's all you, not me.

  80. Adam, essentially in that moment, was saying,

  81. God does tempt, and he tempted me.

  82. And of course, that is a blasphemous lie,

  83. but a blasphemous lie that Adam believed nonetheless,

  84. and a lie that all of us prior to Christ believed.

  85. And this pattern didn't stop with Adam and Eve.

  86. It continued all throughout the Bible and all throughout history.

  87. Job chapter 2, verse 9,

    Job 2:9

  88. Job's wife was ready to curse God and die

  89. as she exhorted her husband to do likewise.

  90. In Ezekiel chapter 18, verses 25 through 26,

    Ezekiel 18:25–26

  91. the Lord rebukes the whole nation of Israel in the midst of her sin.

  92. And he says of them,

  93. Yet you, Israel, say,

  94. So Israel says to God,

  95. The way of the Lord is not just.

  96. Hear you, Israelites.

  97. God responds,

  98. Hear you, Israelites.

  99. Is my way unjust?

  100. Is it not your ways that are unjust?

  101. If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sins,

  102. they will die for it because of the sin they have committed,

  103. they will die.

  104. And this pattern of shifting blame has always been true of fallen man.

  105. This is why James is addressing the issue in his epistle,

  106. because it's still an issue at his time.

  107. It's still an issue in our time.

  108. And he was clearly concerned that his audience was susceptible to such sin

  109. during a time in which they are being trialed,

  110. which we've talked about in the weeks past.

  111. And so to start this text, James, what does he do?

  112. He starts with a strong affirmation of God's holiness,

  113. that God is without blame.

  114. And that's point number one for this morning.

  115. God is holy.

  116. Point number one, God is holy.

  117. He says in verse 13,

  118. Let no one say when he is tempted,

  119. I am being tempted by God.

  120. For God cannot be tempted with evil,

  121. and he himself tempts no one.

  122. It's a firm affirmation.

  123. Holiness means to be separated from sin

  124. and totally, entirely committed to God.

  125. And that is exactly who God is.

  126. The one who is perfectly committed to himself

  127. and without sin.

  128. Totally separate.

  129. There's no blurring.

  130. There's no lines touching.

  131. Totally, totally separate.

  132. The phrase,

  133. God cannot be tempted with evil,

  134. literally translates from Greek as something like,

  135. God is inexperienced with evil.

  136. He doesn't even experience it.

  137. He's never sinned.

  138. He will not sin.

  139. And he has not sinned.

  140. It is against his nature.

  141. Now recall that James is writing to dispersed Christian Jews

  142. throughout the Greco-Roman world.

  143. These believers were facing hardships,

  144. persecution, and trials of various kinds.

  145. It could be easy for them to face that temptation at such a time,

  146. such a time to blame God.

  147. Well, I'm feeling angry because of my circumstance,

  148. which sovereign God brought on me.

  149. How often do believers question God in the midst of crisis?

  150. How often do we try to shift blame to God in our hearts

  151. when we cannot believe the evil we so quickly run to?

  152. And it seems that James is concerned

  153. that his audience would be tempted to do such a thing.

  154. And so he reminds them of God's holiness to avoid any such foolish thinking.

  155. I think one of the great proofs of God's holiness

  156. and our sinfulness is found in Isaiah chapter 6.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  157. Go ahead and turn with me there.

  158. We're going to be there for just a minute.

  159. So keep your thumb in James.

  160. But Isaiah chapter 6, starting in verse 1.

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  161. Isaiah writes, again, chapter 6, verse 1.

  162. He writes,

  163. In the year that King Uzziah died,

  164. I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne,

  165. high and lifted up.

  166. And the train of his robe filled the temple.

  167. Above him stood the seraphim, each had six wings.

  168. With two he covered his face,

  169. and with two he covered his feet,

  170. and with two he flew.

  171. And one called to another and said,

  172. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts.

  173. The whole earth is full of his glory.

  174. And the foundations of the threshold shook

  175. at the voice of him who called,

  176. and the house was filled with smoke.

  177. And Isaiah said,

  178. Woe is me, for I am lost,

  179. for I am a man of unclean lips,

  180. and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips,

  181. for my eyes have seen the King,

  182. the Lord of hosts.

  183. So it's important to understand

  184. when we're looking at this text

  185. what a Hebrew thinks of

  186. when he thinks about knowing something.

  187. I'm talking about epistemology,

  188. if you like big words.

  189. How do you know what you know, right?

  190. To know something was not merely

  191. an abstract intellectual ascent for a Hebrew,

  192. this kind of thing that you just have in the mind,

  193. and now I know it.

  194. Rather, it included the totality of the person

  195. as an embodied creature.

  196. To know something was to understand it

  197. in the mind, in the heart,

  198. in the eyes, and in the body.

  199. This is why Moses often uses euphemisms

  200. like Adam knew his wife Eve,

  201. in the wholeness of his body,

  202. in his person, in his mind,

  203. in his heart.

  204. This is why we are called to love the Lord,

  205. our God,

  206. with all of our heart, mind, soul,

  207. and strength in Deuteronomy 6, 5.

  208. Because we are to love him

  209. in our totality,

  210. or wholeness,

  211. as Jane puts it in chapter 1, verse 4.

  212. So we have Isaiah before the throne of God,

  213. and Isaiah in verse 1 saw God.

  214. Isaiah is beginning to know God as he is,

  215. and this causes Isaiah to cry out,

  216. Woe is me!

  217. And this literally means,

  218. Damn me to hell for all eternity.

  219. And why would he say that?

  220. Because that is the only response one can have

  221. who encounters the Lord in his glory.

  222. Isaiah didn't even see the Lord's face or feet,

  223. only a glimpse,

  224. and yet it was enough.

  225. And the angels sing out,

  226. Holy, holy, holy.

  227. This is a grammatical function.

  228. To write it in this way

  229. takes it to the superlative degree,

  230. meaning God is holy, holier, and holiest.

  231. No one holier.

  232. I can't help but say,

  233. but anytime I hear that,

  234. I hear that in Steve Lawson's voice.

  235. Anybody else?

  236. You know?

  237. This takes it to the superlative degree.

  238. Can't help it.

  239. But by learning how holy God truly is,

  240. Isaiah's only response could have been

  241. to recognize that he himself is unholy.

  242. That Isaiah deserves to be cut off from God,

  243. who is clean and without sin.

  244. Unlike Isaiah, who is dirty and filthy,

  245. a filthy rag at best,

  246. as he puts it later on in his book.

  247. Isaiah did not say to himself,

  248. I have been tempted by God.

  249. He knew better than to say that.

  250. And you can turn back to James with me.

  251. So God is holy.

  252. He is without sin,

  253. totally separate from all evil and wickedness,

  254. which is why it would be so foolish

  255. for James' audience to say to themselves,

  256. we are being tempted by God.

  257. God cannot offer or entice

  258. that which he has never experienced.

  259. Now you all can imagine how James' audience

  260. might have reasoned like Adam.

  261. They might have said,

  262. well, God is sovereign

  263. and he has allowed these difficulties to surround us.

  264. Therefore, he is behind the temptations I face.

  265. He's the cause of it.

  266. It is actually God's fault

  267. that I'm thinking evil in this way.

  268. And this would be wrong for them to do so,

  269. as you have already seen.

  270. But this raises the question,

  271. where does temptation come from?

  272. Who or what tempts us?

  273. Is it Satan?

  274. And this leads me to our second point,

  275. point number two.

  276. Man's nature is sinful.

  277. Point number two.

  278. Man's nature is sinful.

  279. Looking back at verse 14 in James,

  280. James writes,

  281. but each person is tempted

  282. when he is lured and enticed

  283. by his own desire.

  284. Then desire, when it has conceived,

  285. gives birth to sin.

  286. James seems to be saying

  287. that we are the source of our own temptation.

  288. We are tempted when we are lured

  289. and enticed by our own desire.

  290. What he's saying here

  291. is that we are born with a sin nature.

  292. And this is all throughout the Bible.

  293. David put it this way.

  294. He said in Psalm 51, verse 5,

    Psalms 51:5

  295. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity

  296. and in sin did my mother conceive me.

  297. The Apostle Paul said it this way

  298. in Ephesians 2, 3.

  299. He says that mankind is, quote,

  300. by nature, children of wrath,

  301. meaning our very nature is wicked and sinful.

  302. God himself, who is all-knowing,

  303. all-wise, and perfect judge

  304. over the universe,

  305. has said in Genesis 5, 6,

  306. when he looked over the earth,

  307. he said,

  308. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man

  309. was great in the earth

  310. and that he only saw evil continually.

  311. From beginning to end,

  312. mankind is only evil continually.

  313. But just sticking with James' wording to continue,

  314. James says that we have these desires

  315. as your ESV probably translates it

  316. or other translations use that word as well.

  317. The Greek word here is epithumies.

  318. It is the same word that English translations

  319. often translate as lust.

  320. And typically when doing so,

  321. it is because the translators identify the word

  322. as specifically related to some sort of

  323. sexual temptation or desire.

  324. And this is often the case in Paul's writings.

  325. However, it can be applied to anything.

  326. And in its most basic sense,

  327. it really just carries the idea of

  328. a strong desire for anything,

  329. whether that be food, drink, clothes,

  330. or what have you.

  331. In fact, in pre-Koine Greek,

  332. which is the Greek of the Bible,

  333. this word was used to describe

  334. the sudden violence found in nature.

  335. So a hurricane, a flash flood,

  336. a volcano, earthquake,

  337. these kind of things.

  338. This violent, sudden urging,

  339. this movement.

  340. And furthermore, this word epithumies,

  341. this word desires,

  342. it can be understood as a strong,

  343. violent urging that comes from within.

  344. So it's not coming from without,

  345. but from within, right?

  346. Which is why it could be used to describe

  347. an earthquake from within the earth, right?

  348. A hurricane from within the earth

  349. and the sky.

  350. It is this powerful, quick,

  351. seemingly dominating force

  352. that has to be reckoned with.

  353. It cannot be ignored.

  354. So what is James saying?

  355. He's saying that

  356. when we have these sudden urges,

  357. these strong desires,

  358. and when we are enticed

  359. and lured by them,

  360. then at that moment,

  361. we are being tempted.

  362. And we are being tempted

  363. because we are by nature sinners

  364. who desire sin.

  365. And sin occurs in verse 15

  366. after we have gone through the process

  367. of this enticement,

  368. this desire,

  369. and allow ourselves to be lured.

  370. At this point,

  371. we give birth to sin,

  372. which we conceived

  373. when we desired sin.

  374. Just think about the implications

  375. of this truth.

  376. This means that

  377. we are not murderers

  378. the minute we have killed someone.

  379. Rather,

  380. we are murderers

  381. the moment we are angry enough

  382. to desire to murder someone.

  383. We have already conceived murder.

  384. Now murder is going to be born.

  385. This means that

  386. we are not adulterers

  387. the minute we have slept with someone.

  388. Rather,

  389. we are adulterers

  390. the minute we lust after someone.

  391. We have already conceived adultery.

  392. Now adultery is going to be born.

  393. And this should all sound familiar.

  394. It is what Jesus taught

  395. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  396. Jesus said,

  397. Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:21–22

  398. verse 21 through 22,

  399. You have heard that it was said

  400. to those of old,

  401. You shall not murder,

  402. and whoever murders

  403. will be liable to judgment.

  404. But I say to you

  405. that everyone who is angry

  406. with his brother

  407. will be liable to judgment.

  408. Jesus also said

  409. in Matthew 5,

  410. 27 through 28,

  411. You have heard that it was said

  412. you shall not commit adultery.

  413. But I say to you

  414. that everyone who looks

  415. at a woman with lustful intent

  416. has already committed adultery

  417. with her in his heart.

  418. Now all of this means

  419. that there is nobody

  420. to point the finger at,

  421. nobody to blame,

  422. except ourselves.

  423. Our greatest enemy,

  424. our greatest opposition

  425. in terms of temptation

  426. is certainly not God,

  427. but neither is it Satan,

  428. the culture,

  429. a political party,

  430. or anyone or anything else.

  431. It is us, ourselves.

  432. We alone bear

  433. the responsibility for our sins

  434. and rightfully so.

  435. Now this is horrifying news.

  436. We are born as sinners.

  437. We desire sin,

  438. which means we cannot desire God

  439. who is entirely separate from sin,

  440. who is the entire opposite of sin.

  441. And this news gets worse

  442. because sin doesn't stop

  443. at being born.

  444. No, when sin is fully grown,

  445. it produces something.

  446. And this leads us

  447. to the final point

  448. for this morning,

  449. point number three.

  450. Sin results in death.

  451. Point number three,

  452. sin results in death.

  453. I'm going to reread verse 14

  454. through the end of our text.

  455. James writes,

  456. But each person is tempted

  457. when he is lured

  458. and enticed

  459. by his own desire.

  460. Then desire,

  461. when it has conceived

  462. its birth to sin,

  463. and sin,

  464. when it is fully grown,

  465. brings forth death.

  466. Now those terms,

  467. lured and enticed,

  468. were predominantly used

  469. as fishing terms

  470. in the Greco-Roman world.

  471. In other words,

  472. James is saying

  473. that we, like fish,

  474. will gladly bite the bait

  475. and be carried off

  476. by our own desires to death.

  477. And that is a perfect picture

  478. of this process.

  479. We see something with our eyes.

  480. We find it attractive in some way.

  481. And then we go after it.

  482. And to be honest,

  483. there is a source of joy,

  484. a source of pleasure

  485. in that moment.

  486. But it is just that

  487. that,

  488. a fleeting moment.

  489. You can imagine

  490. the fish enjoys

  491. eating the worm so much

  492. that the fish doesn't realize

  493. it is hooked right away

  494. until it is too late

  495. and that fish is flailing about

  496. as it dies a miserable death.

  497. James is saying

  498. that this is true of us.

  499. We bite at what we see.

  500. We are slaves to this.

  501. And this is why

  502. we will all die

  503. apart from Christ.

  504. Because our desires

  505. lead only to death,

  506. ruin,

  507. and destruction.

  508. This is what we see

  509. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:6

  510. verse 6,

  511. when Eve first sins.

  512. Now this text is

  513. written in what's called

  514. the grammatical

  515. va construction

  516. for Hebrews.

  517. So all you need to remember

  518. with me mentioning this

  519. is that is a cue

  520. to the reader

  521. to read quickly.

  522. Right?

  523. It's a way of saying

  524. read this passage fast.

  525. Because that's how quickly

  526. this passage occurred

  527. in real time.

  528. Right?

  529. That's the idea here.

  530. So reading Genesis 3,

  531. 6 quickly,

  532. Moses writes,

  533. So when the woman saw

  534. that the tree was good

  535. for food

  536. and that it was a delight

  537. to the eyes

  538. and that the tree

  539. was to be desired

  540. to make one wise,

  541. she took of its fruit

  542. and ate

  543. and she also gave some

  544. to her husband

  545. who was with her

  546. and he ate.

  547. Right?

  548. Sin,

  549. sin,

  550. sin,

  551. moving,

  552. rationalist,

  553. evil,

  554. wicked.

  555. And it happens quick

  556. in a moment,

  557. fleeting moment,

  558. the pleasure of eating

  559. the apple and dead.

  560. just like that.

  561. And we already know

  562. that God's word

  563. of warning

  564. to Adam and Eve

  565. came true that day.

  566. He said to them,

  567. you shall surely die.

  568. And when they ate

  569. of the tree,

  570. they did die.

  571. Romans 6,

  572. 23,

  573. for the wages

  574. of sin

  575. is death.

  576. God's reaction

  577. to sin

  578. might seem like

  579. an overreaction

  580. to you at first.

  581. It might seem like

  582. God is making

  583. a big deal

  584. about something

  585. that is small.

  586. We can all see

  587. why murderers

  588. or adulterers

  589. might need to be punished

  590. to some degree.

  591. Right?

  592. But the person

  593. who tells a little white lies,

  594. is he really that bad?

  595. The person who maybe

  596. skimped on taxes

  597. a little unknowingly,

  598. are they really that bad?

  599. The person who jokes

  600. inappropriately now and then,

  601. are they really deserving

  602. of eternal conscious torment?

  603. And don't get me wrong,

  604. I do think some sins

  605. are worse than others,

  606. but at the same time,

  607. I believe Paul,

  608. when he says

  609. the punishment

  610. of every type of sin

  611. is the same,

  612. eternal conscious torment

  613. in hell.

  614. The wages of sin

  615. is death.

  616. But back to the question

  617. I posed,

  618. how is God's reaction

  619. not an overreaction?

  620. And this is where

  621. we have to remember

  622. the creator-creature distinction.

  623. God is the creator

  624. who created us,

  625. the creation.

  626. We exist by his will

  627. and for the purpose

  628. of his will,

  629. which is chiefly

  630. to glorify him.

  631. Sin, then,

  632. is doing the very things

  633. for which we are

  634. not created.

  635. Every time we sin,

  636. we are rejecting

  637. God's rule as creator,

  638. we are rejecting

  639. our rule as creation,

  640. and we are spitting

  641. in his face.

  642. Can you imagine

  643. if a fork in your kitchen

  644. wouldn't let you eat,

  645. but it smacked you

  646. every time you tried

  647. to put something

  648. in your mouth?

  649. I mean,

  650. what would you do

  651. to that fork?

  652. How would you feel?

  653. Who is this little fork

  654. that you bought

  655. and maybe even you created

  656. who thinks he has a right

  657. to reject the purpose

  658. for which it was created?

  659. That fork would become worthless,

  660. only good for burning.

  661. I would be livid.

  662. I would want to destroy

  663. that fork in a heartbeat.

  664. That would be so annoying.

  665. Again,

  666. we are created

  667. to glorify God

  668. by being his image bearers.

  669. In other words,

  670. we are to reflect

  671. his glorious,

  672. perfect image.

  673. This image that has never

  674. experienced evil.

  675. And you're starting to see

  676. how egregious

  677. every sin of ours is.

  678. And you're starting to see

  679. that it's not just our sins

  680. that God hates.

  681. He hates our very sin nature.

  682. Our being,

  683. which is a result

  684. of the fall.

  685. And this is why sin

  686. results in death

  687. and rightfully so.

  688. If we are not living up

  689. to our intended purpose,

  690. then we should not live

  691. because we are worthless

  692. in this state.

  693. God makes this plain

  694. in the Old Testament

  695. and Paul tapes it all together

  696. in Romans 3,

    Romans 3:10–12

  697. verses 10 through 12.

  698. God says,

  699. of all mankind,

  700. none is righteous,

  701. no, not one,

  702. no one understands,

  703. no one seeks for God,

  704. all have turned aside,

  705. together they have become

  706. worthless,

  707. no one does good,

  708. not even one.

  709. In so many ways,

  710. death is the opposite

  711. of holiness.

  712. That is why it is so offensive

  713. to our holy

  714. and living God

  715. to be with the unholy

  716. and the dead.

  717. That is why in the Old Testament,

  718. man could not approach God

  719. at their own whim

  720. in the holy of holies.

  721. The veil separated

  722. dead men

  723. from the living God.

  724. To truly live

  725. is to obey God

  726. and to not obey God

  727. is to die

  728. because disobedience

  729. is not living.

  730. You want the good life?

  731. And I don't mean that

  732. in a health, wealth,

  733. prosperity sense,

  734. but if you want

  735. the good life,

  736. you have to learn

  737. to obey God

  738. for the joy

  739. that is found in him

  740. only.

  741. Now, believe it or not,

  742. I'm entering

  743. the closing application.

  744. It's kind of a downer note.

  745. But three applications

  746. and then there will be

  747. one just concluding thought

  748. because I do think

  749. this text

  750. sheds light

  751. on the gospel

  752. and should be cause

  753. for us

  754. to have great hope.

  755. But I want to give

  756. the three applications first

  757. because I think

  758. it would be more fitting.

  759. Application number one,

  760. do not play

  761. the victim card

  762. like our culture.

  763. It is hard to go

  764. anywhere in society

  765. without everyone

  766. telling you

  767. that your actions

  768. are the result

  769. of something

  770. external to you.

  771. Oh, you were just

  772. trained to do that

  773. by your bad parents.

  774. That's why you're

  775. the way that you are.

  776. Oh, that's your

  777. classmates' fault

  778. for enticing you.

  779. That's why you did

  780. that stupid thing.

  781. Oh, you lose control

  782. sometimes because

  783. you face systemic issues

  784. that are beyond

  785. your control.

  786. Not your fault.

  787. Oh, that word

  788. is a trigger for me.

  789. That's why I'm angry

  790. and I want to kill you

  791. right now.

  792. Or how about this?

  793. I can't help it.

  794. I was born this way.

  795. And that's the age-old lie

  796. again and again

  797. and again.

  798. But on judgment day,

  799. God will not

  800. allow anyone

  801. to squeeze out

  802. of anything.

  803. He knows the heart

  804. and He will judge

  805. based off the heart.

  806. It cannot play

  807. the victim card.

  808. It loses

  809. every time.

  810. Application two,

  811. and this goes right

  812. along with the first one,

  813. repent.

  814. And this is simple, right?

  815. Simple to understand,

  816. maybe hard to do.

  817. By God's grace,

  818. which He gladly

  819. lavishes on His church,

  820. we are able to repent

  821. of our sins.

  822. We are able to recognize

  823. that we rightly deserve

  824. to be punished,

  825. to die as a result

  826. of our sin,

  827. which we desired.

  828. But we are atoned for

  829. by Christ,

  830. who knew no sin,

  831. that He bore the wrath

  832. of God that we

  833. deserve.

  834. Jesus was not

  835. responsible for our sin,

  836. and yet He took

  837. the consequence

  838. on Himself,

  839. and He died.

  840. He died,

  841. which means we

  842. won't die

  843. in the eternal sense,

  844. because He was raised

  845. on the third day.

  846. And for those of you

  847. who are not in Christ,

  848. I urge you to repent

  849. and believe in Him

  850. as Lord and Savior.

  851. This is your only way

  852. of escape

  853. from the wrath

  854. to come.

  855. But for the rest of us

  856. who are already

  857. in Christ,

  858. I urge you still,

  859. right?

  860. The command to repent

  861. still stands.

  862. Repentance

  863. is obedience.

  864. So if we do not

  865. continually repent

  866. of our sin,

  867. then our disobedience

  868. is compounded.

  869. Right?

  870. As John says,

  871. if we say we have

  872. no sin,

  873. we are liars.

  874. So confess sin,

  875. and we have an advocate

  876. with the Father.

  877. Now,

  878. application number three,

  879. prepare yourselves

  880. for trials

  881. and temptations.

  882. temptations.

  883. The Greek word

  884. for tempted

  885. that we saw

  886. in verse 13,

  887. we have actually

  888. already seen

  889. in the book of James.

  890. In chapter 1,

  891. verse 2,

  892. text I preached

  893. on a couple weeks,

  894. the word appears.

  895. It is perasmos.

  896. It can mean

  897. either temptation

  898. to sin

  899. from,

  900. with,

  901. or without.

  902. And sometimes

  903. it only means

  904. trial or testing.

  905. In chapter 1,

  906. verse 2,

  907. and in Clay's text

  908. from last week,

  909. it clearly means

  910. trial.

  911. In our text today,

  912. it clearly means

  913. to be tempted

  914. to sin.

  915. I mention this

  916. all to say,

  917. we prepare ourselves

  918. for both temptation

  919. and trials

  920. in the same way,

  921. though they are

  922. different things.

  923. We fill our hearts

  924. and minds

  925. with Scripture

  926. to remain hopeful

  927. in the midst

  928. of trials.

  929. And we fill our hearts

  930. and minds

  931. with Scripture

  932. to remain faithful

  933. in the midst

  934. of temptation.

  935. Easy to understand,

  936. hard to do,

  937. but we have

  938. to do it.

  939. So repent,

  940. prepare yourself

  941. for trials

  942. and temptations,

  943. fill your mind,

  944. your heart

  945. with God's word,

  946. so that in the midst

  947. of it,

  948. you'll never be

  949. tempted to question

  950. God's goodness

  951. or his holiness,

  952. and you'll see

  953. in his word

  954. just how good

  955. he is.

  956. Now, as I said,

  957. before we pray,

  958. I want to offer

  959. one more thought.

  960. It is an encouragement

  961. or perhaps better

  962. to think of it

  963. as a devotional

  964. to conclude the sermon.

  965. When I was assigned

  966. a text,

  967. I thought,

  968. man,

  969. this is going

  970. to be a downer.

  971. But it's true

  972. and we have

  973. to reflect on it.

  974. It's important,

  975. right?

  976. All Scripture

  977. is profitable,

  978. so this is good

  979. for us to hear

  980. these hard things.

  981. So you've heard me

  982. talk about

  983. how we are all

  984. sinners by nature,

  985. that God hates

  986. our sin

  987. and our sin nature,

  988. how we are worthless

  989. apart from Christ.

  990. And that is

  991. biblical truth,

  992. but oh so hard

  993. to swallow.

  994. And there is good news,

  995. right?

  996. This is only

  997. one side of the coin,

  998. and the other side

  999. of the coin is this.

  1000. God loves us

  1001. despite ourselves.

  1002. Now you can call

  1003. this point four

  1004. if you want.

  1005. It doesn't necessarily

1006. come out of our text

  1007. directly,

  1008. but it's biblically

  1009. true nonetheless.

  1010. Romans 5, 8,

  1011. Paul says,

  1012. Christ died for us

  1013. while we were yet

  1014. sinners.

  1015. While we were yet

  1016. lured and enticed.

  1017. While we were yet

  1018. sinners,

  1019. Christ loved us.

  1020. He died for us.

1021. You can read into that

  1022. while we were yet

  1023. worthless,

  1024. evil,

  1025. rebellious,

  1026. and so on.

  1027. You've heard me

  1028. reference this verse

  1029. many times.

  1030. It is a personal

  1031. favorite.

  1032. I've not had the

  1033. chance to unpack it,

  1034. and I still won't

  1035. today, unfortunately.

  1036. But just consider

  1037. this.

  1038. There's no reason

1039. for God to love us

  1040. that is in us.

  1041. It's not our hair,

  1042. it's not our gender,

  1043. it's not our ethnicity,

  1044. it's not our intelligence,

  1045. it's not our wealth,

  1046. or our poverty.

  1047. And it's not even

  1048. our obedience

  1049. that stirs up

  1050. God to love us.

  1051. So what stirs up

  1052. God to love us?

  1053. And it's this,

  1054. God stirs himself

  1055. up to love us,

  1056. and that is such

  1057. good and freeing

  1058. news.

  1059. Zephaniah 3,

    Zephaniah 3:17

  1060. verse 17,

  1061. The Lord your God

  1062. is with you.

1063. He is mighty to save.

  1064. And notice this,

  1065. He will take

  1066. great delight

  1067. in you.

  1068. He will quiet you

  1069. with His love.

  1070. He will rejoice

  1071. over you

  1072. with singing.

  1073. It's not on account

1074. of us that He loves us,

  1075. rather,

  1076. it's on account

  1077. of Christ in us

  1078. that He loves us.

  1079. And this is why

  1080. His love cannot fail,

  1081. because He loves Christ,

  1082. and Christ abides

1083. in us who are saved.

  1084. Just as you should

  1085. not question

  1086. God's inability

  1087. to tempt us

  1088. with sin,

  1089. you should not

  1090. question God's

  1091. unfailing love

  1092. for His church,

  1093. for Christ's pride.

  1094. I didn't plan this,

  1095. but it worked out.

  1096. Nathan mentioned

  1097. Luke 22 this morning.

  1098. I was talking about

  1099. that word desire earlier,

  1100. how it's usually

  1101. translated as lust,

1102. but it can be broad.

  1103. It's not necessarily

  1104. an evil word.

1105. You could use this word

  1106. rightly to describe

  1107. your desire for God.

1108. And it was a curious thing,

  1109. I never knew this,

  1110. but that's the word

  1111. Jesus used

  1112. that's translated

  1113. as earnestly desired.

  1114. So with that desire

  1115. and that extent

1116. to which we seek sin,

  1117. Christ desires to partake

1118. of the supper with us,

  1119. to be with us.

1120. His love is for real

  1121. in that sense.

  1122. It's sincere.

  1123. It's genuine.

  1124. And turn with me,

1125. this is our last text

  1126. and I'm not going

  1127. to comment on it.

1128. I just want to close out

  1129. with reading this.

  1130. But turn with me

  1131. to 1 John 4, 16.

  1132. Again, I just want

1133. to leave us on this note

  1134. of this gospel hope

  1135. that we have.

  1136. John writes,

  1137. so we have come

  1138. to know

  1139. and to believe

  1140. the love

1141. that God has for us.

  1142. They believe

  1143. in his love.

  1144. God is love.

  1145. And whoever abides

  1146. in love

  1147. abides in God

  1148. and God abides

  1149. in him.

  1150. by this

  1151. is love

  1152. perfected with us

  1153. so that we may

  1154. have confidence

  1155. for the day

  1156. of judgment.

  1157. Because as he is,

  1158. so also are we

  1159. in this world.

  1160. There is no fear

  1161. in love,

  1162. but perfect love

  1163. casts out fear.

  1164. For fear

  1165. has to do

  1166. with punishment.

  1167. And whoever fears

  1168. has not been

  1169. perfected

  1170. in love.

  1171. We love

  1172. because

  1173. he first

  1174. loved

  1175. us.

  1176. Let's pray.
